WELCOME to the 11th annual Gemstone Cattle Bull & Bred Female Sale! Thank you to everyone that has supported our sales in the past and has shown an interest in our breeding program.
What an interesting time to be in the cattle business. Since January, with each new high, I have been saying this must be near the top of the market and I continue to be wrong. It just keeps climbing. I’m not sure many imagined we would get to these levels but what an exciting time and hopefully it is here to stay for awhile and when a correction comes it is not a drastic decline. This has been a long time coming for cattle producers and a great time to own cows.
We have less bulls than years past because of more heifers born in 2024 as well as the high selection pressure we put on these bulls. These bulls have been pushed harder than any group of bulls we have sold to date. The bulls stayed out grazing with there mothers until Christmas time when we weaned and brought them back home and were fed poly crop silage until late May when they went back out to grass. They’ll be out on grass until sale time and supplemented with hay when winter hits. The bulls
will be a little greener at sale time, but we feel the bulls that have made it to the sale pen are the true forage converters.
Our sale heifers will once again be the top cut of our F1 red cross heifers. They ran out with their mothers until mid March of this year and will be grazing or on hay until the sale. Lazy J Ranch, Matt and Angela Kumlin, will be back this year again with the top end of their Black and Black Brockel Heifers. New to the Heifer sale this year is Ribbon Creek Ranch - Jerry and Dawn Baerg from Swalwell will have 15 Red heifers bred to Gemstone Angus Bulls
We invite you to stop by ahead of the sale for a visit and look at the cattle at your convenience. Videos of the Sale bulls will be up on our website a few weeks prior to the sale.
Please Join us for lunch on Dec 3rd.
Sincerely,
Daniel & Kimberly and Family
Arno & Wanda and Family
The cattle are available to be viewed at our place prior to sale day. If you would like more information on the cattle please call any time.
Gemstone Goals
The goal of our breeding program has long been to produce efficient, productive brood cows –deep ribbed cattle that are naturally easy fleshing, structurally correct and have superior udder quality. In our experience the cows that thrive on pasture and consistently wean a high percentage of their body weight, produce the cattle that are most efficient through the rest of the beef production cycle.
The strength of a bull’s pedigree is really in the number of long-lived productive cows that show up in his pedigree and even stronger if the best cows appear multiple times. We take advantage of linebreeding in our cow herd to increase consistency and prepotency of the resulting offspring. The 140W Hereford cow (mother of 14G) has 20 cows in her
extended pedigree that produced to 9 years of age and 5 of them show up more than once. Our belief is that “when you get the cow right, everything else will fall into place”. All of our Hereford cows were born here and most are daughters and granddaughters of F-R 8020 Lad 33H. In the Red Angus herd we’ve used some of the best bulls we could from programs that have similar priorities as ours.
We’ve used several bulls from Calvo Family Red Angus in Nebraska – two whose dams are Roy Beeby bred cows and another one straight Beckton breeding. Our 19F bull was bred at Edie Creek Angus in Manitoba and one of the best footed Red Angus bulls we’ve seen.
BULL DEVELOPMENT
We take bull development very seriously and is something that will impact how a bull will perform for the rest of his life.
Our bulls are never pushed to gain weight on a high energy diet. The calves are weaned onto high roughage feed their first winter and turned out on pasture in the spring to develop as bulls. They will stay out on pasture until sale time and be supplemented with dry hay. They will come to the sale in early December never having been fed grain so you’ll see them in their natural condition –
THICKNESS BRED IN NOT FED IN!
EPD’S USED IN CATALOGUE:
CE: Calving Ease EPDs are calculated using birth weight and calving ease score information. Calving ease EPDs represent the ease with which progeny of an animal are born to first calf heifers. The EPD is expressed as a percent probability, with a higher value representing calves with a higher probability of being born unassisted.
BW: Birth weight is an indicator of calving ease. Higher birthweight EPDs usually indicate more calving difficulty.
WW: The weaning EPD reflects progeny growth differences up to 205 days of age.
YW: The yearling EPD reflects progeny growth differences through to 365 days of age.
MM: The milk EPD indicates the ability of a sire’s daughters to provide their calves with an environment that encourages growth from birth to weaning, through mothering ability and milk production. This EPD is expressed in the expected difference in pounds of calf at weaning.
TOTM: Also known as Milk + Growth, this EPD combines the milk EPD plus 1/2 the weaning weight EPD. It is expressed in pounds of calf weaned at 205 days and combines the genetics for pre-weaning growth and the influence of the maternal environment on the weaning weight of the daughter’s progeny.

RED GEMSTONE 67C LAD 45H
TATTOO: KGA 45H • DOB: APRIL 22
45H is a home raised bull out of our Calvo 67C bull and a great little Red cow we purchased from Diamond D Angus. 45H sons should moderate the frame size of their daughters and add a lot of thickness and tidy udders. 45H has a great disposition and his calves are some of the favourites to look at.

HODG 105Z LIAM 7280 91G
TATTOO:
Sired by the old BB bred 7280 bull, 91G is a unique combination of BB, Red Hill and Beckton breeding in a sound, moderate, easy keeping package. He was bred by Bill Hodge and we were fortunate to get him as a 3 year old as the influence on the top side of his pedigree is mostly not available in Canada. By his progeny we are confident he will make a strong contribution to our grass-based breeding program. We think you’ll like his calves.
