EPD DESCRIPTIONS FROM THE CANADIAN ANGUS ASSOCIATION
CalvingEaseDirect(CE): describes the percentage of expected unassisted births when a bull is exposed to first-time heifers. The higher the number, the higher the probability that first-time heifers bred to the bull in question will calve with no assistance. The EPD predicts the average difference in ease with which a sire’s calves will be born when he is bred to firstcalf heifers.
BirthWeight(BW): describes in pounds the difference in expected progeny weight, on average. A bull with a BW EPD of +4 will, on average, sire calves that are 2 pounds heavier than a bull with a BW EPD of +2 (given equal management).
WeaningWeight(WW): describes in pounds the difference in expected weaning weight in progeny, on average. WW EPD is a predictor of a sire’s ability to transmit weaning growth to his progeny compared to that of other sires. A bull with a WW EPD of +50 will sire calves that are, on average, 20 pounds heavier at weaning than a sire with a WW EPD of +30 (given equal management).
YearlingWeight(YW): describes in pounds the difference in expected yearling weight in progeny, on average. YW EPD is a predictor of a sire’s ability to transmit post weaning growth to his progeny compared to that of other sires. A bull with a YW EPD of +100 will sire calves that are, on average, 30 pounds heavier at weaning than a sire with a WW EPD of +70 (given equal management).
ScrotalCircumference(SC): Expressed in centimetres, predicts differences in sons’ scrotal size. Higher SC is linked to earlier puberty and improved fertility in progeny.
Milk: Indicates the pounds of calf weaning weight due to a daughter’s milk and mothering ability. Moderate levels are ideal based on herd environment and management.
CalvingEaseMaternal(MCE): describes the probability of not requiring assistance when a bull’s daughters calve for the first time. The higher the EPD, the higher the probability that a bull’s daughters will not require assistance at calving time.
VIRGINIATECHSTATESMAN
CUDLOBEEUGENIE11E
CUDLOBE
RawBW: The calf’s actual weight at birth.
Adj205WW: Weaning weight adjusted to 205 days for age and dam effects.
RawOct21Wt-or-RecentADG: Actual mid-October weight or average daily gain from birth to mid-October, showing real growth performance.
ClawSet(Claw): is expressed in units of claw-set score, with a lower EPD being more favourable indicating a sire will produce progeny with more functional claw set. Ideally, toes are symmetrical, even and appropriately spaced.
FootAngle(Angle): is expressed in units of foot-angle score, with a lower EPD being more favourable indicating a sire will produce progeny with more ideal foot angle. The ideal is a 45- degree angle at the pastern joint with appropriate toe length and heel depth.
CarcassWeight(CW): is expressed in pounds and is a predictor of the differences in hot carcass weight of a sire’s progeny compared to progeny of other sires. A bull with a CW EPD of +30 will sire calves that, on average, will result in 10 pounds more hot carcass weight than the progeny of a bull with CW EPD of +20.
Marbling(IMF): describes the marbling potential of calves from one bull compared to the calves from another bull, given the same management. This EPD is expressed as the difference in grade score. Given the same management, the calves from a bull with a Marb EPD of 0.6 will marble ½ a grade score better than the calves from a bull with a Marb EPD of 0.1.
RibeyeArea(REA): describes in square inches the difference in ribeye area of a sire’s progeny compared to progeny of other sires.
FatThickness(Fat): expressed in inches, describes the differences in back fat thickness at the 12th rib (as measured between the 12th and 13th ribs) of a sire’s progeny compared to progeny of other sires.
TheCanadianBalancedIndex(CBI) combines multiple EPDs into a single dollar-value figure reflecting a sire’s expected impact on profitability. It balances growth, maternal, and carcass traits to help producers select bulls that maximize overall economic return.
Top%: Shows how an animal ranks within the breed for a specific trait — a lower percentage means higher genetic merit (e.g., Top 1% is elite).

Justified came to Cudlobe West after being purchased as the high selling bull in Stevensons 2023 fall bull sale. “Darrell” as we call him checked all the boxes we were searching for in a new walking herd bull. He is a big framed bull with excellent Production and Carcass EPDs as well as some other things we were hunting for like excellent Foot and PAP numbers. His mother Down T Lucy 003 is a major donor cow at Stevenson’s and has produced many bulls and females for their program. Through AI and natural service we calved 72 of his sons and daughters averaging 83 lbs BW. If your looking for big growth calves with moderate birth check out his 22 sons in the sale.

Here is a heck of a way to start a brand-new sire group. This guy has the look of a herd bull both on paper and phenotypically. Moderate birth weight (76lbs) and huge actual performance (heaviest weaning calf from us) make this guy worth the drive. His mother is a beautiful 3 yr old ET daughter of Upgrade x UF 47E who is a designated Premiere Dam in the angus herd book and classified as a Elite dam in Herdtrax. She is moderate framed with excellent feet under her. This guy checks all the boxes if you’re looking for your next herd bull.

CUDLOBEINFLUENCEFEEDERSALE2025
2025 marked 12 years of marketing Cudlobe Influence Feeder Cattle through our video sale. This is the longest running genetically influenced calf sale in North America!
There were two sales this year; one on June 19th and the other sale was on October 6th. The decision was made by a group of our producers to mitigate some risk and market some of the cattle in June instead. There was some concern with the dry weather conditions, as well as some uncertainty with what may take place with our neighbours to the south.
The June sale had majority of steer calves and was very well supported. It was an opportunity to lock in some of the values that we were seeing at that point in time. Between the two sales, approximately 2500 calves were sold with consignments from Shepard Creek Ranch, Mat & Addy Bolduc - Cudlobe West, Niznik Ranches, Roy & Karen Hall, Torkelson Farms, Curtis, Heather, Jamie & Stephanie Harbinson, Prairie Skies, Alfalfa LTD. and Giles Ranch.
Over the last few years there has been an increase in desire for these genetically influenced calves. This is evident in the repeat clients competing for the high performing healthy calves.
The commitment of these ranches to participate in this sale has been amazing. The product they deliver is second to none, giving them the reputation that this sale is one you don’t want to miss. The consistency, quality, performance and health of the calves continue to top the market.
They have brought a premium price for several years. It is an honour and a privilege to work with Cudlobe Angus, Cudlobe West and the ranchers that believe in and support this sale. We look forward to much more continued success in the years to come!

Larrikin Veterinary Services is responsible for providing breeding soundness evaluations (BSE) on Cudlobe Angus sale bulls and helps oversee the herd health program. The herd health program is focused on preventative medicine (vaccinations, nutrition, husbandry) which ensures the animals reach top production levels with optimal health and comfort.
Bulls receive multiple vaccines post weaning to help ensure optimal health and reproductive soundness. A modified live vaccine (Express® FP5-VL5 – Boehringer Ingelheim) which provides protection against Infectious Bovine Rhinotracheitis (IBR), Bovine Viral Diarrhea Virus (BVDV), Bovine Respiratory Syncytial Virus (BRSV), Parainfluenza 3 Virus (PI-3), Campylobacter fetus (Vibriosis) and Leptospirosis (Leptospira canicola, L. grippotyphosa, L. hardjo, L. icterohaemorrhagiae, and L. Pomona) is given to the bulls in the spring at the time of the BSE. They also receive a bacterin-toxoid vaccine booster (Ultrachoice® 8 - Zoetis) which provides protection against eight clostridial bacterial strains. To help prevent and
reduce severity of foot rot, bulls receive an initial and booster bacterin vaccine (FusogardTM – Elanco) providing protection against Fusobacterium necrophorum in the fall and an additional booster in the spring at the time of the BSE.
A full BSE is done on each bull prior to them leaving the farm. The BSE is an in-depth exam that evaluates overall physical soundness, assesses testicle size and health and ensures normal reproductive anatomy with rectal palpation. A semen sample is collected and evaluated chute side to ensure adequate density, motility and morphologically normal sperm. It is a busy few days but this ‘whole picture real time assessment’ of each bull ensures that only those meeting all the necessary requirements are lucky enough to meet the ladies!

CUDLOBEWEST-HERDHEALTH
Cow/Calf Health and Management Solutions (CCHMS) collaborate with Cudlobe Angus West to manage their entire purebred and commercial herds through an integrated and comprehensive health, and production management program. Detailed data is collected on each individual at key health and production points and kept in a secure web-enabled database (Telus Animal Record Management (Formerly called Herdtrax®). Together, we continually monitor and audit this data to improve the health, welfare, and efficiency of the entire operation. Data is shared with multiple agencies to build on industry initiatives. Cudlobe Angus West and the Bolduc family continually strive to improve the herd by linking the chute-side and field data through genomic parentage testing, the relentless pursuit of pre-harvest ultrasound carcass data, and targeted breeding strategies. The proof is in the lot close-outs and functional longevity of adult cattle. All of these things culminate to improve the likelihood of success as local genetics move to new challenging environments.
DiseasePrevention
Cudlobe Angus West follows a detailed vaccination program:
Calves are vaccinated within the first 10 days of life:
• IBR/PI3/BRSV (MLV) – Inforce 3® (intransal)
Calves are vaccinated in the spring prior to pasture turnout with the following:
• IBR/PI3/BRSV (MLV) – Inforce 3® (intransal)
• BVD (MLV) and Mannhaemia hemolytica – One Shot® BVD
• 7 way Clostridial and HIstophilus Somnus – Ultrabac® 7/Somnubac®
Calves are vaccinated at weaning with the following:
• IBR/PI3/BRSV/BVD (MLV) and Mannhaemia – Bovi-Shield® GOLD One Shot®
• 7 way Clostridial and HIstophilus Somnus – Ultrabac® 7/Somnubac®
Bulls prior to delivery have been vaccinated and treated with the following:
• Fusobacterium Necrophorum – Fusoguard™ (footrot and liver abscess vaccine)
- Two doses given twice 60 days apart
• Lice Control – Permethrin
Bulls prior to the delivery will be boostered, and ready for turnout:
• IBR/PI3/BRSV/BVD – Bovi-Shield® GOLD FP®5
BreedingSoundnessExamination
Each bull has passed an extensive Bull Soundness Examination which includes soundness of structure, palpation of testis and internal sex glands, scrotal circumference, examination of the penis as well as verifying sufficient sperm motility and morphology. Bulls that are considered to be Satisfactory if they have passed the above criteria at some point in time. [However, traditional measures to assess semen quality often provide inconsistent results in individuals due to a variety of environmental factors and may not always correlate to service capacity. Re-evaluating these bulls closer to breeding season or using genomic parentage to calculate service capacity is a more reliable way to identify bulls sufficient for breeding].
CCHMS is proud to work with Cudlobe Angus West and if there are any questions please contact me and I can always find the time to talk about cows, bulls and the ever-evolving cattle industry.
Congrats on another successful year!
