48 ANGUS BULLS • 18 HEREFORD BULLS • 4 F1 BULLS • 140 BRED HEIFERS

WELCOME to the 10th Annual Gemstone Cattle Bull and Bred Female Sale! Thank you to everyone that has supported us in the past and shown an interest in our program. 2024 had a better start to it than last year. Timely spring rains turned the grass green, giving us a good start to the growing season.

This group of bulls has been pushed harder for low inputs than any group we have sold to date. Our Hereford cows were on tough grass conditions last summer and that has impacted weaning weights. All the bulls stayed out with there mothers grazing until mid December when we brought them back to the yard for weaning and fed a forage silage ration until June when they went back out to grass. They will stay out grazing until sale time unless winter comes early. Our focus is not to raise and feed bulls to make the EPDs look good, but rather to push them to work in real life ranch conditions. Those that can’t make it are culled. With feed and feeding costs continuing to be one of the single biggest expenses for cattle producers, finding cattle that can thrive on lower feed inputs remains a priority.

Our sale heifers will again be the top cut of our F1 cross heifers. They were out with their mothers until mid February and will be grazing until sale time unless the snow gets too deep. Nolan Bear will be back again this year

The cattle are available to be viewed at our place prior to sale day. If you would like more information on the cattle please call any time.

with another great set of red heifers bred to Gemstone genetics. This year we will also have 70 red and red baldie bred heifers from Lazy J Ranch, Matt and Angela Kumlin, at Cochrane. They will bring the top cut of their bred heifers to the sale. They have sourced their bulls from us for many years, so these heifers are sired by Gemstone genetics and bred to Gemstone Bulls. Matt and Angela have put together a very impressive cow herd so this will be a great opportunity to get a set of heifers that know how to work and thrive in ranch conditions.

We invite you to stop by ahead of the sale for a visit and have a look at the cattle at your convenience. Videos of the sale bulls should be available on our website or on TEAM a few weeks ahead of the sale.

Please join us for lunch before the sale on December 4th.

Sincerely,

Kim & Daniel and family

Wanda & Arno and families

GEMSTONE GOALS

The goal of our breeding program has long been to produce efficient, productive brood cows – deep ribbed cattle that are naturally easy fleshing, structurally correct and have superior udder quality. In our experience the cows that thrive on pasture and consistently wean a high percentage of their body weight, produce the cattle that are most efficient through the rest of the beef production cycle.

The strength of a bull’s pedigree is really in the number of long-lived productive cows that show up in his pedigree and even stronger if the best cows appear multiple times. We take advantage of linebreeding in our cow herd to increase consistency and prepotency of the resulting offspring. The 140W Hereford cow (mother of 14G and 175E) has 20 cows in her extended pedigree that produced to 9 years of age and 5 of

them show up more than once. Our belief is that “when you get the cow right, everything else will fall into place”. All of our Hereford cows were born here and most are daughters and grand-daughters of F-R 8020 Lad 33H. In the Red Angus herd we’ve gone out to find some of the best bulls we could from programs that have similar priorities as ours.

We’ve used several bulls from Calvo Family Red Angus in Nebraska – two whose dams are Roy Beeby bred cows and another one straight Beckton breeding. Our 19F bull was bred at Edie Creek Angus in Manitoba and one of the best footed Red Angus bulls we’ve seen. We recently added Crowfoot breeding in 3259A and several bulls that go back to Diamond D breeding from Montana (see footnotes on the Angus herdsires).

BULL DEVELOPMENT

We take bull development very seriously and is something that will impact how a bull will perform for the rest of his life.

Our bulls are never pushed to gain weight on a high energy diet. The calves are weaned onto high roughage feed their first winter and turned out on pasture in the spring to develop as bulls. They will stay out on pasture until sale time and be supplemented with dry hay. They will come to the sale in early December never having been fed grain so you’ll see them in their natural condition –thickness bred into them, not fed into them.

EPD’S USED IN CATALOGUE:

CE: Calving Ease EPDs are calculated using birth weight and calving ease score information. Calving ease EPDs represent the ease with which progeny of an animal are born to first calf heifers. The EPD is expressed as a percent probability, with a higher value representing calves with a higher probability of being born unassisted.

BW: Birth weight is an indicator of calving ease. Higher birthweight EPDs usually indicate more calving difficulty.

WW: The weaning EPD reflects progeny growth differences up to 205 days of age.

YW: The yearling EPD reflects progeny growth differences through to 365 days of age.

MM: The milk EPD indicates the ability of a sire’s daughters to provide their calves with an environment that encourages growth from birth to weaning, through mothering ability and milk production. This EPD is expressed in the expected difference in pounds of calf at weaning.

TM: Also known as Milk + Growth, this EPD combines the milk EPD plus 1/2 the weaning weight EPD. It is expressed in pounds of calf weaned at 205 days and combines the genetics for pre-weaning growth and the influence of the maternal environment on the weaning weight of the daughter’s progeny.

For bulls that come back to our place to be wintered we are offering an alternative to standard insurance coverage. For bulls that are coming back to our place to be wintered, at the buyers option, for an additional 4% on the purchase price we will cover the bull for any potential injury, sickness or death from sale time to delivery in spring of 2025. This coverage will be full refund of the sale price or replacement of the bull with a bull of similar value, again at the buyers choice.

Should you wish to insure your bull for the upcoming breeding season upon delivery, Gemstone Cattle will assist in getting that accomplished through Canadian Farm Insurance Corp after the bulls have been semen tested and are ready for delivery.

Standard insurance coverage will also be an option on sale day through Canadian Farm Insurance Corp.

Bulls that return to Gemstone without coverage do so at the buyers risk.

ANGUS

ARED CALVO RIGHT KIND 82D

TATTOO: IMP 82D DOB: MAY 13 2016

82D is a sound, thick, moderate bull with a strong cowmaker pedigree dominated by BB, Buff Creek and Beckton breeding. He was used at Calvo’s as a calf and we bought him privately in spring of 2018 as we were looking to add some RO17 influence into our herd. Our 91C bull is out of the same BB bred 9X cow as 82D. He bred a lot of cows naturally his first year here as you will see he has the largest sire group in our sale and leaves a strong stamp on his calves.

RED GEMSTONE 67C LAD 45H

TATTOO:

45H is a home raised bull out of our Calvo 67C bull and a great little Red cow we purchased from Diamond D Angus. 45H sons should moderate the frame size of there daughters and ad a lot of thickness and tidy udders. 45H has a great disposition and his calves are some of the favourites to look at.

cEPD’S

RED EDIE CREEK 19F

TATTOO: ECA 19F • DOB: APRIL 22 2018

19F came from the Edie Creek Angus 2020 sale. We were attracted to him because of the OCC bloodlines and his incredible feet. One of the best footed red bulls we have seen. He also holds his condition very well on grass and hay. He should produce cows that will excel in a low input program. We own 19F together with Edie Creek.

DDA PONDERA 64V

TATTOO:

We purchased 64V from Diamond D Angus at Vallier Montana. We purchased him for the maternal strength in his pedigree. We used 64V for 2 years and he is now back at Diamond D being used in there breeding program.

RED CROWFOOT ALLSTAR 3259A

TATTOO: CFCC 3259A DOB:

Allstar was the high selling bull calf at the Crowfoot dispersal in 2013 purchased by Mick Kubinic. He was an extremely sound footed red bull with a mostly black pedigree. We purchased an interest in All Star when he was 7 years old. Fortunately, we drew semen on him as he was hit by lightning before we could walk him.

HEREFORD

TATTOO: 7256 • DOB: MARCH 04 2017

A CHURCHILL NIGHTCAP 7256E

We were first attracted to Nightcap by the multiple connections back to OXH Mark Domino 8020 (also sire of our 33H bull) in his sires pedigree, the strength of the breeding programs behind both his parents and his outstanding numbers for calving ease, ribeye area and marbling. Very few Hereford bulls combine the ribeye and marbling ability Nightcap does. Nightcap was the high seller in the January 2018 Churchill Sale. He produced a high volume of quality semen at 11 months. We think you will agree he has crossed very well on our herd (all daughters and grand daughters of 33H). Owned with ST Genetics, Navasota, Texas (We have possession and all Canadian semen rights.)

PCC OH AXEL 9516A

TATTOO: 9516A • DOB: SEPTEMBER 07 2013

Axel is a 3.5 frame score and weighs 2,170 lbs – developed on grass and hay only. His sons are thick, easy fleshing and have a great disposition. His daughters have proven to be exceptional cows. They are thick and moderate and can hold there condition in any environment.

14G is a son of DP Britisher AGA 46E and our 140W cow. We used 46E years ago and were pleased to get some semen to raise a son. 46E left good sound females and bulls in his day and we expect the same from 14G.

One of 5 herd bulls we have used out of the 140W cow. Lots of maternal in his pedigree. 175E has the fleshing ability of his sire PCC OH Axel 9516A, excellent feet and a great disposition. We are excited about the daughters he will sire.
