Footnotes has taken on a new look with your Board Officers Carl, Mindy, Tracey, and and our General Manager, Suzanne contributing to the magazine’s opening message. My column this month will review and highlight the Club’s finances with me as Treasurer, and my background.
But let’s first go back to how I arrived on the scene with GLIRC. From 2012 through 2021, I was President and a Board member of the North Country Road Warriors. I joined GLIRC in 2010, was encouraged by a Board member to run for a Board position in 2021, and I was elected in December 2021 for a 2 year term. Based on my not for profit experience and financial background the GLIRC Board appointed me to the finance and governance committees. The Board then elected me as Treasurer in May 2022, with the task of analyzing the Club’s financial condition and recommending a plan for moving forward. Race cancellations during the pandemic had a big effect on us financially, but now with the support of the Board, the ship is sailing in a positive direction. The Board has had plenty on its plate over the last few months and has worked hard by implementing significant changes to our financial operations, including:
• Development of the Club’s first ever annual budget
• Redesign of our entire financial reporting system
• Monthly reporting of cash flow projections
• Preapproved race event budgets to better control costs and predict outcomes
• Policies and procedures for authorizing expenditures for improved internal controls
Our goal is to continue to implement small changes that will keep us in a strong financial position. This will allow us to best serve our members and enable us to apply for grants and sponsorships that can benefit our members and their communities.
While we have made considerable progress putting in place sound business practices, there is still work to be done and challenges that lie ahead. Our financial success rests on four cornerstones: (1) sponsorships, (2) increased memberships, (3) increased race registrations, and (4) volunteers. The Board cannot do it alone. We need a strong, dedicated membership to help us all cross the finish line of success so that GLIRC remains the leader in the Long Island running community.
In addition to being a finance guy I am also a runner, so I have a fair understanding of the sport. I have done my share of races over the years from 5K to marathons but I didn’t start running until my early 30’s. Baseball and softball had previously been my games. My personal goals include running a half marathon in every state, finishing 50 marathons, and completing 200 half marathons. I turn 75 next year but I am closing in on those numbers and certainly will get there by the time I turn 80. I have done 2 triathlons but I’m a terrible swimmer, a decent cyclist, and an above average runner…. so if you want to find someone at the end of the triathlon pack, just look for me.
On a personal level, I married my wife Pat in 1969 while I was in the service and for 53 years (yes 53!) We are grateful to be the parents of 4 married children and 10 grandchildren. Spending time with the grandkids has been a wonderful experience for both of us. To say we have been blessed is an understatement, with each of our kids living within 10 miles of where Pat and I reside in Wading River. I am a graduate of Plainview High School and obtained my bachelor’s and master’s degrees at St. John’s University. My professional career has included 3 years in public accounting, 18 years as a CFO, 12 years as an adjunct associate professor in accounting, and 30 years as a public speaker and training consultant. I recently retired in 2019.

Once again thank you and Carl for let me and Trent and I be the guest speaker for last night’s GLIRC meeting. The GLIRC running club and its members mean everything to us. Love, Benjamin Beavers
Janette Ackman, a longtime GLIRC runner moved to Florida a few years ago with her husband Richard. She was so happy to spend the rest of her life with her two sisters and son and grandchild. Shortly after moving she was diagnosed with ALS. Sadly, she had been in the very early stages of ALS and it was not detected until after she moved. I did mention to Terry Bisogno that she passed away and Terry wrote me back and said... She always loved how I (Terry) pronounced her name and her daughter’s name. We lost a truly warm, compassionate human being and heaven gained a runner. For me it was extra sad, because she died on my 70th birthday.
The grueling GOMU 48 Hour World Championship was held on September 3rd in Hainesport, NJ. The race featured a loop course on a .9913 mile paved path that is completely flat, with an alternate route of 1.2034 miles. Both loops were USA Track & Field Certified and 10% of ever entry was donated to Hainesport EMS. Here is what Byron has to say about it in a message he wrote to Mike and Sue. We hope that awesome lucky hat continues to provide you good fortune in the future Byron!
Hello Mike and Sue.
I hope you have both been well since we’ve seen each other last.
During the first weekend of September, I participated in the 48 Hour World Championship. Ever the optimist, I brought one of my favorite hats, a classic from the POBRRC, likely from the late 1980’s: if I had a good race, I’d want to take a photo with it. Well, I finished third, earning the bronze medal, and won my age group, so I’m an age group world champion. I had a race worthy of all of the great times I’ve had with you two and, well, everyone in the club. POBRRC/GLIRC has been a part of my life since I’ve been in high school, and I’m glad that I could honor it with a WC medal.
I asked the photographers to take three photos, one with my local running shop (Smithtown Running Company) kit, one with the group I run with (Selden Hills Warriors), and my longtime club, POBRRC/
GLIRC. I have so many fond memories of you two, the meetings, the runs, the races, and the people. I just wanted to send the photo to say thank you. Thank you for being good friends for all of those years, and for doing so much for so many of us. With appreciation and love, Byron
• We had 276 finishers in the UJA-Federation Race Against Poverty on 9/11/22 at Tobay Beach.
• Plans for Rob’s Run 5K on 11/27/22 are in the works. The athletic fields and parking lots are now owned by the Syosset School District, and this has led to some delays. We hope to open registration in the next few weeks.
• We are working with Sayville Running Company on a Brewery Run in January 2023 along with 4 training runs. We will update you as soon as possible!
• The Board voted to move the Kings Park 15K to March of 2023. The race had been postponed to November of 2022 from March of 2022 due to pandemic related issues. We felt it best to return the event to March as we had not found anyone willing to step into the Race Director position for this fall, and many runners liked it as a ‘spring start’ race. We are aiming for 3/25/23 to avoid conflicts with other already scheduled races.
• We are working on a race schedule for 2023, and we are extremely excited to see a growth in numbers and fewer restrictions. There are some new events coming your way, and we hope to delight you with what the 2023 racing calendar will have to offer. Stay tuned to Footnotes, your inbox, and social media for announcements on our future plans!

In the last issue we forgot to mention GLIRC member Brandon Berman in our recap of the Ellen’s Run 5k. This run was important to him and we feel that we can all appreciate the ability to run, as well as our GLIRC community a bit more when we hear stories like Brandon’s. Here is what he had to say about his run. Congratulations to you both, keep up the inspiring work, and best of luck at future events!
On 8/21/2022, I ran the Ellen’s Run 5K in Southampton. This race was not my fastest finish time, and I am 100% OK with that. Ellen’s Run is primarily a breast cancer benefit honoring survivors and those that have passed. My girlfriend asked me to run with her. I was excited to run with my girlfriend for this race as it was a wonderful way to honor her fight against her own battles with cancer. Almost all races benefit a charity. Participating in a race benefiting a cause that has meaning to you completely changes the entire “feel” of the race. Some races just have a larger purpose than to score a PR or win a medal.
Scenic 2.1 mile loop, with several rolling hills and two bridge crossings, primarily on dirt paths. Runners will be switched to a 1/2 mile loop for the last laps to facilitate scoring. This race is in honor of GLIRC's "Class of 1962" and Fred von der Heydt.
The 22nd annual 6 Hour 60th Birthday run was started in 2000 when Mike Polansky and Barry Aransky turned 60! This year’s event, titled the Fred von der Heydt Memorial 6 hour 60th Birthday Run, pays homage to the previous race director of the event and honors the class of 1962. The race director for this year’s event will be Myron Bellovin, who has directed this unique event for the last 15 years. The run’s beneficiary will be the Nassau County Fire Fighters Museum, which was founded by Myron’s son-in-law’s father, Francis X. Pendl. This year, signed up to run are 16 GLIRC members who will turn 60 in 2022.
The low-key event allows runners to complete as many 2.1-mile loops as they desire within the 6-hour time limit. Loops are run on the trails of the beautiful and scenic Sunken Meadow State Park. This year’s run is shaping up to be an excellent day to go for a long run so remember, EVERYONE is welcome to join in this large celebration! Our record number of 6-hour runners is 130 participants, let’s make 2022 the year we break that record!
Although this race is 6 hours long in itself, you will want to save a little energy to participate in the celebratory after party. Woodbury Deli has been sponsoring the event since its inception and provides a great spread of food to replenish those calories! Beer and soda are also provided and, most importantly, a huge birthday cake to honor all the 60-year-old runners. If the loops get difficult, just remember, CAKE!
New for this year is the event’s title sponsor, Performance Health. They have recently opened a new location on the island located in Massapequa and are very excited to start supporting our local running community. Their patients receive the highest level of specialized, non-operative orthopedic care. Performance Health is dedicated to helping their patients not only reshape their bodies but also reshape their mindset and experience a more vibrant way of living. They also bring a new treatment to the island that will most certainly benefit our running community, The TenJet System. The procedure is performed in an outpatient setting under a local anesthetic only takes approximately 15 minutes. Please check them out!
Featuring some great ocean views, this course starts at the Smith Point Park parking lot, takes you out and back over the Smith’s Point Bridge, and finishes at the TWA Flight 800 Memorial along the beach. The event benefits The Community Family Literacy Project which is a non-profit organization whose mission is to promote family literacy in the area served by the MasticsMoriches-Shirley Community Library. It was created exclusively to provide programs and services that encourage and support literacy for all ages. The race winners were Ethan Goldman in the Men’s field in a time of 17:13 and Zariel MacChia in the Women’s field with a time of 18:29.

y g y y holesome place to run in the fall Situated at the headwaters of the Nissequogue River, this 627 acre park offers enthralling views. It features a main double track, 5 7 mile loop that is composed of hard packed dirt and gravel. This trail takes you around Stumps Pond, where the shoreline pops with bursts of color everywhere you look There are plenty of spots to take in the foliage as the trail opens up to a small shoreline beach in four different spots along the route. The main trail is also paralleled by plenty of rooty single track that traverses the lake’s shoreline This loop is easy to navigate and almost all of the single track paths rejoin the main loop at the above mentioned view points. If your running buddy is of the furry variety, this park is very dog friendly and even has a large dog park!
State Park spans 3,473 acres of land and water. This land plays host to many rare nesting birds, including osprey. You can also find numerous rare plants that will make you take a second look as you run past. The park has 20 4 miles of well marked paths and trails that make their way up and down the Connetquot River, dancing through canopies of colorful trees and opening up into vast meadows Aside from the magnificent canopies of color, the fish hatchery is another site to run past. Here you can see a project designed to re establish trout populations in our local rivers. This park will take you far away from the hustly and bussle of our local communities and make you feel reconnected with nature. Take a run here to feel the crisp autumn breeze on your face, and let the fresh scented and misty air of the river fill you with joy!
There are two main entrances as well as many smaller entrances off ofresidential streets within massapequa park. The two main entrances are on opposite ends of the preserve, they are:
Linden Street Corner of Linden St. & N. Pine Dr. Massapequa Park (Limited street side parking)
This is a free public park and the length of the preserve is 3.15 miles. This will make a 6.3 mile round trip run!
Located near the Nassau Suffolk border, in the center of Massapequa, this preserve is one of the most scenic parks in the area. This place has it all, from paved paths to gravel double track, it even plays hosts to some incredible twisty single track trails that switch back and forth over meandering streams via dozens of wooden bridges. Perfect for a flat run of almost any distance, this path can connect to Bethpage State Park via the Bethpage Bikeway. Along the way you will pass enchanting ponds, wild flower gardens, and plenty of aquatic and woodland wildlife. The views will leave you mesmerized as you run past streams and ponds that reflect the abundance of color from trees above. This run will be sure to fill your lungs with crisp autumn air and leave a smile on your face.
On Sunday September 11th the beautiful TOBAY Beach played host to the UJA-Federation Race Against Poverty. The race benefited the UJA-Federation of New York, which is the largest Jewish philanthropy in the world, helping 4.5 million people annually.
The day featured two different races, a 3 mile run as well as a swim-run event made up of an 800 meter swim followed by a 3 mile run. The morning was cloudy but the water was calm and racers arrived excited to get on the starting line. The 3 mile runners would start at 8:30am and the participants made their way past the TOBAY spray park and into the wildlife preserve! As for the swim-run event, the swim course would be a clockwise loop of the bay leaving athletes with a few hundred meter beach run back to transition where their shoes and a 3 mile run course awaited. Once exiting the transition area athletes were greeted with the same run course as the 3 mile participants. The route highlighted all the great features of the TOBAY area. The course ran through the TOBAY Beach Bird and Game Preserve, the TOBAY Marina, and finally culminated with an out and back loop on the bike path.

Held on September 3rd, the Runner’s Edge Main Street Mile is a classic event in the Village of Farmingdale. The race has become a great way for families to kick off their Labor Day weekend festivities while also exploring the ever-expanding downtown area of Farmingdale. The 1-mile course starts with a short and sharp uphill to get the heart pumping before screaming down a steady, smooth descent. While running downhill is favorable in chasing a 1-mile PR, the pounding downhill can really take the zap out of your legs as you transition into a false flat and head down Main Street towards the finish, you will want to have something left for this section! Fear not as your legs scream at you to stop, Farmingdale plays an incredible host as the streets are lined with cheering spectators, encouraging runners to get every last second out of their legs. This year’s participants were treated to a post-race event hosted by That Meetball Place, where they got to celebrate their achievements. The race benefited Companions in Courage Foundation. The organization was founded by NHL Hall of Famer Pat LaFontaine and raises funds to build interactive playrooms in hospitals throughout North America. LaFontaine was present on the day to meet and greet runners and as well as help with the days raffle prizes. The big winners of the day were Jonathan Schloth in a blazing fast 4:16 and Maria Williams in an impressive 4:56.
GLIRC award winners include: Raymond Williams 1st (M 3034), Keith Masso 3rd (M 35-39), Alyse Batt 3rd (F 60-64), Sally Glasser 1st (F 50-54), Richard Spiegel 1st (M 75-79), Thomas Mihailin 3rd (M 25-29), David Parker 3rd (M 55-58), Brian Walls 1st (M50-54), Boyd Carrington 2nd ( M Overall), Earl Penney 2nd (M 50-54), Bert Jablon 1st (M 90-100), Norman Hershkowitz 1st (M 80-85), Joseph Gallagher 2nd (M 80-85), Elias Hernandez 1st (M 40-44), Colleen Eren 1st (F 40-44), Elizabeth Penagos 1st (F 70-74), Gabriel Hickey 2nd (M 70-74), Jack Hanley 1st (M 85-89), Trent Hampton 1st (M 40-44), Benjamin Beavers 2nd (M 45-49), James Mcdougall 2nd (M 65-69), Marissa Mcdougall 1st (F Under 18), Stacey Holman 2nd (F 30-34), Brant Brown 2nd (M 75-79), Jennifer Despagna 2nd (F 55-59), Jennifer Despagna 2nd (F 5559), Alex Eletto 2nd (M 25-29), Mark Rosenberg 2nd (M 80-84), Alecia Oleyourryk 2nd (F 35-38), Roger Soulagnet 1st (M 70-74)

On a crisp, nearly perfect September morning, runners from near and far arrived at William J Brosnan School on Laurel Avenue in the Village of Northport ready to take on this iconic course. The Great Cow Harbor 10K has become one of the most prestigious 10K races in the country. Runner’s World previously named the Great Cow Harbor 10K as one of the top 100 races in the USA!
While the race attracts many Elite participants from all over the world, and the times from this year were blazing fast, this is a race for anyone and everyone who loves to run. While not a record attendance, the 2022 event saw 4,011 runners take to the start line. Wow! At the front of the Men’s race was Biya Simbassa of Flagstaff, Arizona in a course record of 28:13, 4:32 per mile pace! The runner up was Leonard Korir of Colorado Springs, Colorado in a time of 28:35, and rounding out the Elite Men’s Podium was Sam Chelanga of Colorado Springs, Colorado in a time of 28:36. In the Women’s race we saw Steph Bruce of Flagstaff, Arizona take the win in a time of 31:53. In a sprint finish for Second, Nell Rojas of Boulder, Colorado edged out Annie Frisbie of Hopkins, Minnesota crossing the line in 31:57 and 31:59 respectively. Both Biya Simbassa and Steph Bruce set new course records, taking home the $2,500 bonuses on top of their 1st place prizes of $7,500!
In addition to the 10K race, the day also featured a 2K Fun Run / Walk that has been a huge success. This event attracts families and participants of all ages with over 1,000 participants taking to the streets of Northport! Even though this National Championship race receives a lot of attention for its stellar elite field of runners, as a nonprofit 501 (c) 3, the Great Cow Harbor Race also provides large donations to support Special Olympics, The Northwell Health Foundation, the Veterans Administration, The Ecumenical Lay Council Food Pantry, and other local causes.

Scott J. Beigel was a teacher, coach and camp counselor who spent his life focused on building others up. Scott grew up in Dix Hills, NY and ultimately found his ‘dream job’ as the crosscountry coach and geography teacher at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, FL. On February 14, 2018, as an active shooter walked the halls of the school, Scott opened his door to save the lives of 31 students and in the process, gave his own. 17 souls were lost that day and in the devastation that followed, the Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School Cross Country Team founded a 5K run/walk in honor of their beloved Coach Beigel, in an effort to bring together a grieving community. This 5K would forevermore be named the RUN 4 BEIGEL.
Scott’s legacy lives on through the Scott J. Beigel Memorial Fund and events like RUN 4 BEIGEL. Scott’s parents, who remain Dix Hills natives, are especially focused on the upcoming fall race being held on the date of what would have been Scott’s 40th birthday. RUN 4 BEIGEL is a bi-annual fundraiser to support the Scott J. Beigel Memorial Fund (a 501(c)(3) organization) and its mission to send at-risk children touched by gun violence to summer sleep-away camp. All funds raised go to supporting Scott’s legacy in changing the world, one child at a time. Join us on October 22 for RUN 4 BEIGEL Long Island.
On August 28th the Runner’s Edge Tobay Triathlon and Trirelay presented by Event Power LI took place. Beginning in the Town of Oyster Bay this Long Island staple event is one of the most popular triathlons on the island, largely in part to it’s incredible course. It begins with a 1/2-mile swim in calm and scenic Oyster Bay Harbor. Next, you will bike a single loop 12.3K course, thru beautiful Oyster Bay and Oyster Bay Cove. The hills are punchy and will test even the strongest cyclist. Athletes who saved just a little bit on the hills will be able to push on the final flat sections back to transition. Lastly, onto the run for a hilly 5K thru Mill Neck and Brookville climbing up to the Planting Fields Arboretum before turning around and running back down to Roosevelt Park for the finish! This year’s event, produced by Event Power LI, saw fast competition up front, incredible age group efforts, and of course a tremendous amount of smiles on course. Cheering spectators chanted athletes on up the climbs and a few sprint finishes ensued to make the event exciting for all who came out. What an exceptional day for this classic event! Top finishers in the Male Category were Tom Eickelberg (50:59), Tim Steiskal (54:24), and Eric Juergens (55:51). On a beautiful and sunny day, the future stars of triathlon took to the waters and streets of Oyster Bay to compete. The race had 105 young athletes participate and all of them showed what it means to truly give it your all and to enjoy the sports that we are fortunate enough to participate in on a daily basis. These kids tackled the course with awe inspiring confidence and tenacity, leading to some of the happiest finish line celebrations we have seen this year. To many of these kids it was their first triathlon, to many it was their 10th or 20th, but they all exhibited comradery and sportsmanship on course that proves our sport is in good hands with these future stars! Learn some of these names because they will be toping our local triathlon result sheets real soon!
According to GoRuck.com, “Rucking is the action of walking with weight on your back. Walking with a weighted rucksack (aka backpack) is a low impact exercise based on military training workouts. Rucking builds muscle and strength while improving cardio and endurance. Bringing both types of exercises together provides a fuller range of benefits to improve your health. You can burn up to 3x more calories than walking.” Rucking can benefit members of our running community in many ways such as increasing muscular strength, improving balance, and providing a fun, unique option to spend time on our feet without the structural stress of running.
Let’s get into the event details. Athletes had the option to participate in a 22 mile ruck that Starts at American Legion Post 803 in Southold, NY and finishes at Southold Fire Department, an 11 mile walk from the Southhold American legion to the Orient Fire House, and a 5 mile walk from the Southhold American Legion to the Greenport American Legion. RUCK-ers and walkers Joined National Guard Officer, Major Charles J. Sanders to walk part or all of the 22 miles to honor our fallen service men and women. The event is held to bring about awareness of the 22 servicemen and women who tragically take their own lives each day, and to raise funds for the Bob Feller Act of Valor Foundation’s Scholarship Program.
In addition to the Walk 4 Valor Ruck event, the Bob Feller Act of Valor Foundation also provided local runners with the Run 4 Life 5k which took place on the flat and paved Vietnam Veterans Memorial Trail in Wading River.
Bob Feller inspired countless Americans when, at the age of 23, despite being eligible for a deferment, he put his baseball career on hold and became the first American professional athlete to enlist in the military, volunteering for combat service the day after the attack on Pearl Harbor on Dec. 7, 1941.
Feller missed almost four full seasons in the prime of his career, and likely an additional 100 wins, serving aboard the USS Alabama, earning 6 campaign ribbons and 8 battle stars.
Honorably discharged from the Navy as a Chief Petty Officer on August 22, 1945, Feller resumed his baseball career, going on to win 266 games and throw 3 no-hitters over the course of his 18 Major League seasons, all with the Cleveland Indians.
A first ballot National Baseball Hall of Famer in 1962, Feller was frequently asked, “What is the most important game you ever won?” Without hesitation, his answer was always “World War II.” For the remainder of his life until his passing in December 2010, at the age of 92, he took great pride in his time in the military, and never once regretted serving his country before himself.
“Every day is a new opportunity. You can build on yesterday’s success or put its failures behind and start over again. That’s the way life is, with a new game every day, and that’s the way baseball is.”

WE BROKE A RECORD! A record 144 teams crossed the finish in the 2012 BETHPAGE OCEAN TO SOUND RELAY. Over 1,100 runners from all over Long Island traveling through some roads that many of us rarely, if ever, get to see. A perfect day with perfect weather.
Once again, the Nassau County Police, and Auxiliary Police under the direction of Lori Levering provided their usual excellent traffic control. Nassau County Amateur Radio Emergency Services again provided outstanding communication services.
There were many GLIRC volunteers serving as course guides and leg interchange personnel. Jonn Snitko of JMS Racing Services provided perfect results through what is essentially an event with eight finish lines.
Thank you, Joe King, for providing Moonstruck for their 19” year of music for the post-race gala. Our caterer Sebastiano’s served up a fantastic assortment of food and drink.
The biggest acknowledgement and thank you goes to our sponsor the Bethpage Federal Credit Union for their financial support.
Congratulations to the 275 team members who each received one of the brand-new Bethpage gold medals!
As for next year, we are planning to incorporate a portion newly paved and widened Nassau-Suffolk Green Trail into the course. This will add an exciting new dimension to the event.
See you Sept. 29, 2013
Yours truly, Alan End Event Director
It rained on Labor Day this year! Oh yes, it really rained. But runners are a very hardy bunch, and 214 of the hardiest of the hardy made it to the starting line of the fourth and final Long Beach Race of the year - the 5 mile Robert McAvoy Memorial Race.
The heavy rains didn’t appear to slow down Carlos Castro, Jr., who coasted to a 26:39 fist overall finish, comfortably in front of runners-up Yorki Munoz and the ever-improving George Schroeder. The rains also didn’t slow up Debbie Cuttitta, who scored still another victory as the first woman overall, outlasting Female Masters champion Eileen Barnes Corley and Diane Bownes to take top honors for the morning. Nearly 20 percent of the finishers were Club members including eight of the top twenty finishers overall and each of the first four women overall, as GLIRC members continue to provide a strong source of support for the excellent Long Beach recreational running program.

PLAINVIEW , NY - A strong contingent of athletes from C.W. Post came to Plainview for the Third Annual Maccabiah 5K Run on Sunday morning. September 27, and they scored heavily with first, second and fourth place finishes overall.
Post speedster Marty Ryan took first place honors in 15:16 , Adam Cigliano of Post ( 15:38 ) was second , and John Cunningham of Rye, NY ( 15:50 ) edged out Post’s Luis Nunez of Post ( 15:51 ) for third place.
On the women’s side of the house, perennial Long Island champion Barbara Gubbins ( 17:23 ) was an easy winner, with Sandra Natal of Brooklyn ( 17:55 ) holding off Leslie MinnizWolfe ( 18:00 ) for second place.
Top masters finisher was 43 year - old Jay Hildebrand of Bayside in 17:05, who edged out his twin brother Mare ( 17:13 ). The first female masters was Elizabeth Pansos of Plainview - Old Bethpage Road Runners Club.
The event was administered by the Plainview Old Bethpage Road Runners Club, with POBRRC’s Sue Polansky serving as the Race Director.
All in all, 377 runners crossed the finish line in the 5K ( exactly the same number that finished in last year’s Run ) and about 50 youngsters participated in the accompanying 1/2 milc fun run.
The entire proceeds of the Run went to the US. Committee Sports for Israel, to help send the United States Team to the 14th Annual Maccabiah Games in Israel in 1993. The financial sponsors of the Run M.D. Hirsch included Investment Management, Bank Leumi, and Apple and Eve Juices.
“We were excited by every aspect of this year’s Maccabiah Run”, stated Race Director Sue Polansky “We obviously made a lot of runners happy, we put on a quality event, and we raised some significant funds for the U.S. Maccabiah Team. That’s a pretty good morning’s work!”

Getting involved in a car accident takes a toll, mentally and physically. The accident can leave you with physical trauma such as scrapes or bruises, but you may also suffer from aches and pains that aren’t always visible. Even a seemingly minor accident can result in lasting injuries. Often mild injuries will become apparent within a few hours after the accident, but can take days to appear. Seeking treatment as soon as possible is critical to avoid long-term complications. The longer you wait to seek car accident treatment, the more difficult it becomes to connect your injury to the accident. Chiropractic care specializes in treating soft and hard tissue injuries that are difficult to detect. Unlike broken bones that are treated with surgery and splints, soft tissue injuries don’t necessarily show up on standard X-rays. Often soft tissue problems have a tendency to show up days later. The most common injury is whiplash, but many people suffer a variety of issues that run from back sprains to spinal misalignments. In most cases, no-fault auto insurance will cover your treatment.
New York is a “no-fault” insurance state, which means the insurance company reimburses the insured regardless of who caused the accident. Insurance companies can reimburse insureds for medical expenses and other losses resulting from an accident. If you were a driver, passenger, or pedestrian and were struck by a car, these benefits will be payable by the car’s insurance company. Regardless of fault, they will be paid regardless of the cause of the accident.
Neck injury commonly known as whiplash occurs when the head and neck are rapidly and unnaturally moved forward and backwards. Spinal misalignment and muscle tears occur due to this motion, leading to continued pain if not corrected. Spinal ligaments can be jarred out of place, which can affect your muscles, tendons and nerves, worsening your pain.
The sudden forces from a collision place extreme strain on your spine. The resulting back pain can range from mild to excruciating. You may feel the pain immediately, or it may take a couple of days. Back pain often radiates to the extremities. Your back may feel stiff and sore, making it difficult to move, walk, or sit. The soreness may be localized to a specific region, or you may feel it across your entire back and into your neck, shoulders, and arms.
Another common injury from an auto accident is a herniated intervertebral disc. The intervertebral discs are the cushion-like discs that sit between the vertebrae in the back. Herniated discs in the low back can usually cause pain in the low back and sometimes pain, numbness, or weakness down the leg. Disc herniation can compress spinal nerves or even the spinal cord.
People often experience muscle spasms after a car accident and
can be quite painful, making your muscles sore to the touch. You may experience burning pain in your back and buttocks. The pain may be continuous, or it may only occur sporadically and briefly. Sharp pain often occurs with movement, such as shifting your position when laying or sitting or going from a seated position to a standing one.
The impact of a car accident causes muscle injury when a muscle becomes overstretched, becomes compressed by striking an object, or rapidly contracts. The symptoms associated with muscle injuries are pain with movement, decreased range of motion, muscle weakness, muscle tightness, pain in the muscle, and bruising. When a muscle stays contracted, this is known as a muscle spasm. Muscle spasms are the body’s attempt to splint and protect the area from further damage. Muscle injuries usually heal the quickest due to rich blood supply, but it is important to seek treatment to prevent scar tissue formation. Scar tissue is poorly formed muscle fiber that does not function as well as normal muscle tissue. Proper treatment such as Active Release Technique and Graston Technique helps prevent scar tissue from forming. Excessive scar tissue can lead to chronic pain and limited mobility.
It is important to have your injuries evaluated and treated early to prevent chronic pain and loss of mobility. Beginning with a comprehensive exam and x-rays, chiropractors can determine the extent of the injured areas and create a treatment. At Jonas Chiropractic we devise a personal treatment plan to alleviate inflammation, reduce nerve irritation, and return the spine to proper alignment, which will relieve pain and restore mobility to muscles and tendons.
Jonas Chiropractic Sports Injury Care specializes in treating all types of injury, including those caused by an accident. Our goal is to provide the most effective treatment possible for our patients, bringing your body back into balance, relieving pain and restoring your range of motion so you can get back to what you love to do. We are dedicated to keeping up with the most effective procedures that provide significant positive results. These can include stretching, strengthening, manipulation, cardiovascular exercise, and other modalities to thoroughly cover all bases. Our multidisciplinary approach leaves no stone unturned. Our approach is as unique as you are.
