Hi!

It’s Allie! I’m always ready to run in style! I love to layer up for winter and still look cute! The New Balance Reflective Impact Heat Run Jacket has a vaporloft fill that will keep you extra warm. A really cool watch pocket so you don’t have to lift up your whole sleeve to check your pace. And all over reflective print when the light hits it is great for when you have to run in the dark. You will probably find me running some miles with my son in his baby jogger this season!

Hello Ladies! It’s Jerode here just wondering... What’s up? This is the Craft Glide Block Jacket. It is the perfect jacket for layering and is equipped with wind and waterproof fabric. It has two pockets to carry all your essentials and this will keep you very warm in all cold conditions. If you are free, I would love to take you out for a coffee, and can we chat about cats?

Hi!

Kaitlin here! I love to run on trails and for cold runs I need extra warmth on my head and hands! The Craft Advanced Fleece Lumen Hat is a snug fit with brushed fleece and enhances visibility. The Craft Lumen Advance Hybrid Glove has a tuck away mitten for extra warmth and there is reflective print all over the glove for added safety! Hope to see you on the path somewhere where you will most definitely find me hanging with my fur baby Sonny!

A MESSAGE FROM CARL GROSSBARD

As I write this message, I want you to know we at GLIRC are so grateful for all of you as we head into the holiday season, wrap up activities for this year, and head into what’s shaping up to be a fabulous 2023 for the Club.

Before I touch upon my final message of good cheer for this year, I want to acknowledge the devastating loss of Ric DiVeglio earlier in the month. The sea of familiar faces at his service was a visual reminder that he went above and beyond for the Long Island running community as a Club member, Board Member, Race Director, and volunteer. We dedicate this issue to Ric, and we have chosen to rename January’s 10 Mile Brewery Run in his memory. Rest well, dear friend.

It feels like just yesterday that I was reading Mike’s farewell statement in last December’s Footnotes as we headed into the uncharted territory of 2022 with both eagerness and trepidation, simultaneously. Now we are ready to close out the year, and we are headed into a new year with some promising signs for the Club and for the industry. Membership numbers are growing, so your extended family just got larger! Many of you have joined the Club for the first time and are just beginning to see the perks of membership. Others have renewed after an extended vacation. Welcome, and welcome back! Pre-COVID numbers are beginning to populate local running events – we are just as excited to race as you are! We have some new partnerships with local sponsors, and some fun ideas for new events to fill out the calendar.

Speaking of the calendar, if you are one of our advertisers and would like to put your event in our 2023 paper calendar, please contact the GLIRC office at info@glirc.org as soon as possible. The paper calendar is a constant reminder of your event, and a sneakpeek of the 2023 version is very beautiful after a format update.

Our final events for the year are coming up, and it’s almost like we saved the best for last! On December 17, we have the Steel Equities Gold Coast Studios Ho Ho Ho 5k Holiday Run – we’d love to see those costumes and “centipede” teams win prizes! We also still need many volunteers, so please consider helping out! Following that, we have two free events, but whatever they lack in cost, they are abundantly rich in Club tradition: the Heckscher to Connetquot December Trail Run on December 18 and the Clubhouse Fun Run on December 31. Details will be in your Club emails soon, so make sure you are checking for updates.

Thank you for making GLIRC the largest and most active club on the Island! As the Officers, the Board, the General Manager, the staff, and I tie up the loose ends remaining to 2022, we want to thank everyone who has already participated in our Giving Tuesday campaign. As a 501 (c) 3 nonprofit, we cannot continue our charitable programs without you. You responded positively to our GroupRaise restaurant fundraisers at Anthony’s Coal Fired Pizza and Pokeworks of Woodbury, and so we will include more of these opportunities in the future. The #GLIRCISGIVING 5k Challenge is a free event that we are extending to you as a virtual option to help the Club. Our office staff kicked off the event on November 29, and posted their run on social media – it was a lot of fun, so you should check it out! The opportunity to sign up and run is open through December 31. If you opt to donate $19.78 with your run to honor the year the organization began, we can do even more for the greater Long Island area.

No matter what you celebrate this season, we hope it is happy, healthy, and safe. Make it a memorable one.

GLIRC PRESENTS $1000 CHECK TO THE OPENING WORD

GLIRC was pleased to be able to donate $1000 to the Opening Word Program out of the proceeds from the July 2022 Runner’s Edge Women’s Run 5k presented by Bethpage Federal Credit Union. The $1000 check was presented to Gillian Kessinger, Execu tive Director, and Elaine Jahrsdoerfer, OP, Chair of the Board of Di rectors of The Opening Word at one of their school locations at the Lady of the Miraculous Medal Church in Wyandanch.  The Open ing Word is a lit eracy, ESOL, and job readiness pro gram; the purpose of which is to un lock the language ability of adult par ticipants, providing them with a key to future personal empowerment, in creased civic and social respon sibility and en hanced skills for membership in the workforce.

THE DEADLINE FOR THE JANUARY ISSUE OF FOOTNOTES IS DECEMBER 18, 2022

UPDATE FROM YOUR BOARD…..

• GLIRC received an unqualified opinion from our auditors. We were advised that the financial controls we put in place in 2022, including implementation of budgets for all races and events, had a strong bearing on their opinion. The Board will continue to implement initiatives recommended by the auditors as we move forward into 2023.

• Your current volunteer points will not expire! We are reworking our volunteer program with the possibility of using a function in Run Signup that we’ve been told will soon be available.

• There were 324 finishers in the Town of Oyster Bay Supervisor’s 5K on October 15, 2022.

• There were 272 finishers, including 47 teams, in Rob’s Run Cross Country 5K on November 27, 2022.

• We are working on implementing GLIRC youth or junior memberships at a discounted price in 2023.

• Tracey Epstein will be Race Director for the Kings Park 15K on March 25, 2023. Race Directors are still needed for 2023 races! If you are interested in becoming a Race Director or in being trained and mentored by an existing Race Director, please reach out to us at info@glirc.org.

I had been helping set up the races for GLIRC for a few months at this point and I had seen Ric at almost all of the Brewery runs. He was always dressed so nice and conducted himself so professionally that I eventually just assumed he was the owner of the Brewery. I remember for the Mardi Gras run at Great South Bay, he and I ended up walking side-by-side down a hallway together. He introduced himself and we shook hands. I told him my name and followed it up with, “you’re the owner, right?”. He laughed and corrected me, letting me know he wasn’t! I was slightly embarrassed, but he had such an energy about him that I quickly let go of that feeling. We both ended up just laughing at my assumption and went our separate ways. He was a great man that always made others feel comfortable, invited and appreciated!

I have known Ric for over 15 years.

During that time, he served as Race Director for 6 of GLIRC’s biggest races.

As always, he did a bang-up job. He was probably the most organized Race Director we have had and his contributions will surely be missed. He was a true friend who never had a bad word to say about anyone, he was a gentleman thru and thru.

He will be missed but his achievements will always be with us, May you rest in peace my friend.

Ric and I shared a lot of these past 30 years and more.  Ric and Carl Grossbard and I crossed the finish line together at my favorite race of all time -- the 2001 JFK 50 Miler, we ran together from the Blue Point Brewery long before there ever was a Blue Point Brewery Run.  Ric and I ran together, we laughed together, and oh yes, we drank more than a few beers together.  Ric was a good man, a good friend, and someone who always had a smile on his face and never had a bad word to say about anyone.  I miss him.

It was a tremendous honor to work alongside Ric for the SRC 10M Run to the Blue Point Brewery, first as an Assistant Race Director and then to take the reins myself.  Being a Race Director means worrying about a thousand little details up to and including the day of the event.  Yet even in the face of this, Ric was always Ric: consummately

Ric DiVeglio

polite and level headed, friendly to every single person he interacted with, and full of good cheer and positivity to put on the best event he could for the runners and the community.  Much can be said about the thousands of runners who he helped over the years and all the money he helped to raise for deserving charities, but what will stay with me is what a gentle soul he was.  I’ll miss him as a mentor, a colleague, and most of all as a friend.

Ric DiVeglio was also known as “Gentleman Ric”, and a gentleman he was indeed. It was an absolute pleasure to have worked with him on the GLIRC Board of Directors for over a decade. Ric would step up to do whatever needed to be done. He successfully managed events around a number of brewery races. It was always a pleasure to share a beer with him after an event and cheer for another successfully executed Ric race. Ric also took the Laboring Oar in putting on the Ho Ho Ho Run. There’s no telling just how many doors he knocked on to get prizes for the races.

Ric will be sorely missed.

I had known Ric for decades. Not only was he an integral part of GLIRC, he was the nicest, kindest man. He was a wonderful race director, always staying on top of things and letting no small detail get by him so that the participants could have an enjoyable and safe experience. He also volunteered at any race for which he was available. My favorite sights, though, was Ric with his lovely wife Kathy and Ric with his granddaughter Rhyan. Ric’s face lit up and he was so full of joy! He will be greatly missed!

The man who could not say No, He did not have this in his diction. If you ask 3,000 runners about him, not one person would have a negative response. I don’t remember when or how I met him. He was always part of my running life, I will always remember the last goodbye. He wore so many hats for the club and made us all look great. When he could not take the pain any more, he said his last YES going through the finish line. Be at peace, we will miss you.

My prayers and condolences to the GLIRC community. Ric was a giant within the LI running community. RIP Ric. Thank you for all you have given us &

-Don C.

Ric was a fixture, in a good way, for as long as I have been a Glirc member.

My sympathies to all who knew and loved him. Ric will be missed. Thank you.

-C. Lance Margolin

Sending my condolences... he was a very passionate and creative leader. -Madison McGlone

We knew it was coming, but I had gotten so used to him keeping on, keeping on.  What a wonderful human being. I first formally met Ric at a Saratoga Summer Series party.  He modestly and humorously introduced himself as “I’m in your age group, but I’m not fast like you”. If I knew him better then, I would have replied, “Yeah, but you’ve got me beat on all the metrics that matter.”  What a wonderful human being! Random memories: meeting up with Ric and Kathy at their Cedar Beach camping hangout.  Ric as M.C. at a Ho Ho Ho 5K awards presentation – demonstrating the many ways you could wear the award’s neck gaiter. The crowd applauded. Going on Sunday pre-brunch Saratoga runs with Ric’s sister and company.  He and Carl were managing the Blue Point “fun run” before it even became a race. He set the tone as race director at many of our events, calmly solving problems and moving things along.  The rest of us volunteers’ sort of followed his example, and got things done, respectfully and efficiently. I’ll never forget Ric’s grace, patience, kindness, humility and sense of humor. We are all blessed to have known him. Condolences to his family and many friends.

Ric was a kind and generous person. He was very devoted to his family and was very loyal to the GLIRC Family. It was a pleasure to work with Ric on so many events and as co-race director one year for the Steel Equities Gold Coast Studios Ho Ho Ho 5K Run. You will be greatly missed by all who knew you! May God bless you!

BEER MILE WORLD TITLE

RUNNING AND BEER- GOES TOGETHER LIKE…?

Oil and water? …Or spaghetti and meatballs? Read through and watch the videos before you give your final answer! Now, let’s dive into this fun challenge turned world championship event.

Through some deep research, the Beer Mile can be traced back to an August night in 1989 on the Burlington Central High School track in Burlington, Ontario. The youngest participant was Graham Hood, who was 17 at the time and later competed in the Olympics in the 1,500-meter race. A few years later Ian Fallas and Rob Auld, brought the fun tradition to their Queen’s University teammates and via word of mouth, news of the tradition flowed faster than William Paul shotgunning a beer. By 1993 an official set of rules had been declared and Beer Mile competitions were popping up at universities across North America. The original rules were: “The alcohol content must be over 5 percent, it must be drunk out of a can, four beers must be drunk (women only drink three), an extra lap is added on if you puke, and absolutely no drinking aids can be used.” In 1998 Patrick Butler officially brought the Beer Mile to the US at Wesleyan University in Connecticut. He bought the domain name beermile.com and started keeping track of U.S. running times with the “Kingston Rules” (minus the rule that women only must drink three).  Fast forward a little over a decade and James Nielsen, a collegiate runner, started to train for the beer mile like the professional athlete he was. Nielsen Combined mile training with stomach stretching exercises performed by Competitive Eaters. He broke the 5-minute mile for the first time in 2014 and the internet was set ablaze with Beer Mile hysteria!

Moving on to 2022 there have been 44,296 miles ran and 177,184 beers drank during 4,514 registered events worldwide. The event even has a World Championship now! On October 15th, 2022, athletes from 13+ countries competed for the title at The Beer Mile World Classic in Leuven, Belgium. During this 8th running of the World Classic, current world record holders Corey Bellmore of Canada and Allison Grace Morgan of the USA were on hand to defend their titles. On the men’s side, Corey Bellmore easily defended, taking the lead early on and running a 4:49 to secure the advantage over Emil Granqvist of Sweden who came home second in a time of 5:05. On the Women’s side, Elizabeth Laseter of the USA stunned the crowd in a new world record time of 6:15 but was later disqualified for stepping out of the “chug zone” while drinking her final beer. Laura Riches of the UK crossed the line in second place but was also disqualified for having too much beer left in her can. This meant that third place finisher Melanie Pozdol of the USA would take the official world title in a time of 6:41. The lesson learned here? This competition is just as much about drinking as it is about running! If you think you have what it takes to complete this gut-wrenching challenge, below is a list of the full rule set and a link to the official Beer Mile World Classic video. Get ready to be enthralled, and nauseated at the same time!

The 2023 Beer Mile World Classic will be coming to Chicago USA in 2023 and athletes will be allowed to utilize bottles instead of cans. Do you think you have what it takes? The world record for bottles is 4:28 set by Corey Bellmore in 2021. Time to start chugging and training!

Beer Mile Official Rules

1. Each competitor drinks four cans or bottles of beer and runs four laps around a standard 400m running track (start with

chugging a beer, then run a lap, then beer, then lap, then beer, then lap, then beer, then lap - finish).

2. Beer must be consumed before the lap begins within the transition area. The transition area is the 9-meter zone between the waterfall starting line for a mile race and the finish line of a 400m track.

3. The race begins with competitors lined up on the mile starting line, drinking the first beer in the transition zone described in the step above. This ensures competitors cover a complete mile. Competitors can walk/move in the transition area while drinking, but all beer must be consumed in the transition area before setting off to run a lap.

4. Women also drink four beers and run four laps (some past rule lists only required ladies to drink three beers).

5. Competitors must drink canned or bottled beer that is no less than 355mL (12 Oz) in volume, which is the standard can/bottle size in the USA and some other countries.

6. No specialized cans or bottles may be used that give an advantage by allowing the beer to pour at a faster rate (e.g. wide mouth bottles/cans).

7. Beer cans must not be tampered with in any manner. (e.g. no shotgunning, puncturing the can, squeezing the can, etc.). The same applies for bottles - no straws or other aids allowed that speed up the pouring process. The only action allowed is opening the can with the tab at the top or twisting off the bottle cap of a bottle.

8. Beer must be a minimum of 5% alcohol by volume. Hard ciders, hard sodas, and other alcoholic sugary drinks will not suffice. The beer must be a fermented alcoholic beverage brewed from malted cereal grains and flavored with hops.

9. Each beer can/bottle must not be opened until the competitor enters the transition zone on each lap.

10. Competitors who vomit before they finish the race must complete one penalty lap at the end of the race (immediately after the completion of their 4th lap). Vomiting more than once during the race still only requires one penalty lap at the end.

NEW YORK CITY MARATHON RECORD TEMPS & RECORD CROWDS

New York, the city that never sleeps, the city that RUNS! On November 6th almost 50,000 runners took to the streets of NYC to compete in what is considered one of the most challenging races on the World Majors Circuit. Making this day even more challenging was the heat. That’s right heat, in NYC, in November! With a high temperature around 73 degrees, many athletes scrambled to adjust their race plan to include proper hydration and electrolyte intake. For anyone who thinks that the weather was a fluke, statistics point to a far different conclusion. Since the race was moved to November in 1986 the marathon has been held on November 6th six times, out of those six races, all six of them have had a high temperature over 60 degrees for the day. So, the moral of the story is, if you want to run a warm NYC Marathon, wait until a year it is on November 6th! Coincidence or not, the TCS NYC Marathon sure brought the heat. While on the topic of statistics, here are a few more fun facts about this year’s marathon. There were 47,839 finishers, 26,608 male finishers, 21,186 female finishers, and 45 non-binary finishers. This was the closest male to female ratio in the race’s history. There were 15,933 international finishers representing 131 countries, and all 50 states plus the District of Columbia were represented as well. It was also estimated by the City of New York that more than 1 million spectators lined the streets of the five boroughs to cheer on runners! If you are not a statistics junkie, read on, let’s jump into what makes the TCS NYC Marathon the largest marathon in the world.

While many races play host to celebrity marathoners, NYC Marathon always seems to be the race that boasts the largest celebrity field. If you were on the streets cheering, you may have seen one of them! This year’s list includes: Marit Bjorgen, Olympic gold medalist in cross-country skiing: 3:08:52, Matt James, former lead of “The Bachelor”: 3:46:45, Meghan Duggan, Olympic gold medalist in hockey: 3:52:06, Ashton Kutcher, actor and entrepreneur: 3:54:01, Casey Neistat, YouTuber and filmmaker: 3:54:28, Claire Holt, actress: 4:03:17, Lauren Ridloff, actress from “The Walking Dead”: 4:05:48, Zac Clark, former “Bachelorette” contestant: 4:08:10, Chelsea Clinton, daughter of Bill and Hillary Clinton: 4:20:34, T.J. Holmes, “Good Morning America” anchor: 4:25:31, Monica Puig, Olympic gold medalist in tennis: 4:32:39, Sierra Boggess, Broadway actress: 5:06:23, Ellie Kemper, actress from “Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt”: 5:17:39, and Tiki Barber, retired Giants running back: 5:26:51.

While not necessarily a celebrity from the big screen, the return of Tommy Rivers Puzey, aka “Rivs” was a topic of immense discussion. Tommy is a professional ultra-runner with an extremely large following. He has been very open about his battle with cancer in the last year and returned to race, well, just for the love of racing. He wrote in an Instagram post earlier in the week “Why run a marathon when you can barely run for a minute at a time? Because we can”. He has been very outspoken and inspirational about not taking anything in life for granted, including your ability to run. He is sure practicing what he preaches! Also, at the 2022 race was none-other than the crowd favorite 68-year-old Israeli runner, Moshe Lederfien. Moshe ran the entire marathon balancing a pineapple on his head. Yes, you read that right, and he finished in 5:45:23 to boot. WOW!

Now, let’s dive into the elite races. Evans Chebet and Sharon Lokedi led a Kenyan sweep of the division and Marcel Hug of Switzerland, and Susannah Scaroni of the United States broke the course records to win the men’s and women’s wheelchair divisions, respectively. Lokedi won the race on her debut, becoming one of only eight others to do so in her time of 2:23:23. Top American honors for the Women’s Division was Olympian Aliphine Tuliamuk, taking seventh place in 2:26:18, a personal best and her fastest finish out of three tries on the New York course. In the Men’s Division Kenya’s Evans Chebet took the win in 2:08:41 seven months after winning the Boston Marathon. This made him the first man in ten years to win both races in one year. However, Evans was not the leader for most of the race. Brazilian Daniel do Nascimento lead the race until around mile 21, after splitting the first half in an NYC Marathon record of 1:01:22, he was on pace to destroy the course record of 2:05:06. When mile 21 came around Daniel grabbed his leg, stumbled for a few steps and fell to the ground. Shortly after Chebet would pass by and sail on to victory.

The TCS NYC Marathon was one for the ages and our Long Island running community was well represented at the event! Here is a list of all the athletes who raced under the GLIRC Club. Congrats to all!!!

THE END OF AN ERA – THE BROADWAY ULTRA SOCIETY CLOSES SHOP

November 20th was a special day, although a sad one, for the local running community.

After 44 years of the Broadway Ultra Society taking the lead on ultramarathons in the greater Metropolitan area, Richie Innamorato decided that it was time to close up shop.  The November 20th Alley Pond 60 Kilometer Run is the last race that BUS will be hosting.

It was a fitting end, since the first BUS race in 1978 was also a 60K race at Alley Pond Park.  (It later became the Metropolitan 60K).

Lots of old timers and a couple of youngsters were on hand to thank Richie and BUS for 44 years of serving the ultra community.  There was a special cake prepared for the occasion, and Nick Palazzo presented a special plaque to Richie to commemorate his service on behalf of BUS members, GLIRC members, and the ultramarathoning community in general.

RACE AWESOME- BIG FOOT DASH

In conjunction with the Muddy Tire 6 Hour Mountain Bike Race, this Race Awesome event took runners on a 5-mile course around the trails of Cathedral Pines in Middle Island. A hotspot for local mountain bikers made this course appealing to many local runners as it is not a typical venue for trail running on the island. Fresh trails equal smiling faces for runners! The race took runners through some of Long Islands peak foliage, which made for some great sights along the course. In the Men’s Division, it was Robert Campos taking the win, and in the Female Division it was Brandylee Komorowski coming home in the 1st place spot.

GLIRC finishers include: Connor Ryan (1:01:26), Ronald Porter (52:21.2), Dan Ingegno (59:41.6), Joshua Bosley (41:40.1), David Eaton (47:58.2), George Lira (1:04:36), Leonardo Latouche (51:15.0)

JOHN THEISSEN CHILDREN’S FOUNDATION FREAKY 5K

FREAKY FAST & VERY FUN

The John Theissen Children’s Foundation Freaky 5K is a staple Halloween event in our local running community. The race hosted over 615 runners this year! Starting and finishing behind the foundation’s Family Fun Center, the course takes runners on a fast and flat course, great for competitive and non-competitive participants alike. The event also featured the Trick-or-Treat Trot — a quarter mile race for children 10 and under. Participants in both races were encouraged to embrace the Halloween spirit and run in-costume, which many did. The event even had cos tume awards in conjunction with their finisher awards ceremo ny. Proceeds collected from the race benefited the John Theissen Children’s Foundation, which Theissen founded in 1992. Inspired by his experiences during a hospital stay, the group’s initial goal was to bring toys to sick and underprivileged children in medical and childcare facilities. The organization has grown to so much more and now provides immense recreation center support to local hospitals, providing thousands of local children every year with access to recreation supplies and activities. No wonder so many of Long Island’s top runners came out to race and show their support!

In the Men’s Division two GLIRC members landed in the top two podium spots with Jossi Fritz-Mauer taking the win in a speedy 15:55, and Boyd Carrington second in 16:37. Third went to Angel Confesor in 17:21. In the Women’s Division GLIRC had a clean podium sweep! Maria Williams took the win in 18:52, Kelly Perno-Grosser took second in 19:11, and Shari Klarfeld rounded out the podium with a 19:56. AMAZING WORK, GLIRC!

GLIRC was represented in huge numbers at this event! Here is a list of all 74 GLIRC members who completed the Freaky 5K: Jon Wallach, Glenn Morse, Ira Kaplan, Bill Niedfeld, Erin Gregorio, Larry Davidson, Joanne Kong, Trent Hampton, Kelly Rhatigan, Marie Sander, Melissa Altschuler, Francis Mcnamee, Andre Zalta, Deborah Kane, Steven Friedland, Shari Klarfeld, Elaine Richards, Boyd Carrington, Sarah Damore, Larry Kurtzman, Barbara Davis, Jossi Fritz-mauer, Diane Christie, Peter Martin, Lisa Bonanni, Pao Wang, Peborah Gordon, Jennifer Love, Laura Vegas, Dorian Marshall, Mindy Davidson, Adriana Staiano, Eric Friedman, Christina Jones, Elyse Salpeter, Jackie Olmsted, Deirdre Bambrick-Oriani, Kelly Perno-Grosser, Christine Snyder, Joanne Hendrickson, Liz Pfeifer, Frederick Benlein, James Mcdougall, Liz Flahavan, Vicki Jones, Linda Simon, Nancy Tantone, Scott Fairgrieve, Laura Ryan, Wendy Martin, Steve Frankle, John Kane, Paul Bonanni, Valerie Hall, Maura Turner, Karen Melara, Alyse Batt, Christopher Koegel, Howard Pivnick, Lynn Dionisio, Steven Millon, Bert Jablon, Benjamin Beavers, Jennifer Vargas, Thomas Coll, Norman Hershkowitz, Julie Vodola, Jerry Wosleger, Daniel Hall, Christine Camardella, Michael Ludwig, Jessy Davidson, Kim Scharoff, and Doreen Mcdougall.

WINTER IS COMING

The off season can be one of the most important times of the year for a runner trying to acheive big goals in the coming year. It's a time to work on the foundation that will keep you injury free and running your best in 2023! Through the next four issues we will focus on a few main areas runners should address to help improve their form and running economy.

CORE STRENGTH

Running is essentially a balancing act. When we run, we are constantly balancing on one foot before leaping to the next. This requires a great deal of coordination and stability that we often take for granted. Having a strong core will make sure that the force you generate will go into propelling you forward.

Plank Variations Planks build great stability in the core, but adding some moves such as "knees to chest" or using a ball under your hands can provide the multiplane stability that we require to run. Plank with stability ball Knee to chest plank

CORE STRENGTH

Many runners neglect this area of their core, but it is an integral part of the kinetic chain and should be strengthened in conjunction with the rest of your core. The low back can provide support as the miles add up as help prevent that nagging low back pain that many runners with desk jobs can experience.

Through the next four issues we will focus on a few main areas runners should address to help improve their form and running economy.

CORE STRENGTH

Many runners do not realize the importance to the glutes as they relate to stability. While they are an essential part of your force development during the running stride, they also act as the foundation to your upperbody. They push forward and hold your upper body tall and strong.

THE FRED VON DER HEYDT MEMORIAL 6 HOUR 60TH BIRTHDAY RUN

On a warm fall day on October 16, 2022 at Sunken Meadow State Park, the 6 Hour 60th Birthday Run had 119 runners out there for the entire 6 hours or some part of it including the 27 people celebration their 60th birthday. The course is a combination of pavement and trails and was enjoyed by all who attended. Byron Lane and Hengzhi Zhu running together were the male leaders at 37.52 miles taking first and second place respectively, with Zoltan Feledy running 36.06 miles for third place. Kelly Gillen ran 34.94 miles to be the female leader with Gillian Ratay taking second place at 33.26 miles. Leading the Class of 1962 were George Worth at 31.20 miles and Kim Hooper-Stanley, who was also third female overall, at 31.57 miles.

The runners were treated to a party after the race which was a huge success with both hot and cold food and salads thanks to the Woodbury Country Deli, a large birthday cake, and lots to drink. Race Director Myron Bellovin, assisted by Richie Innamorato, did an excellent job organizing and putting on this event with Sayville Timing Services doing the race timing and scoring and Performance Health as the new sponsor.

The enthusiastic volunteers, on the course, at the aid station and at the party, were greatly appreciated by Sherry Bellovin, Coordinator of Volunteers, and by all the runners. They include Paul Cooper, Pat Delaney, Diane DeLissio, Irene Drezen, Jonathan Ehrlich, Helma Clavin, Amy Goldstein, Bill Guichard, Pam Lee, Peter Martin, Wendy Martin, Sue Sabol, Bob Sherman, Greg Taha, Bill Wagner, Donna Walter.

GLIRC members running this event were: Byron Lane (37.52), Zoltan Feledy (36.06), Michael Hunter (31.66), Derek Michel (31.2), Michael Sorrentino (31.02), Jonathan Nicastro (30.12), Eva Casale (29.36), Jay Masten (29.28), Justin Volpe (28.38), Ellen Greenspan (27.98), Bert Voland (27.46), Stephen Uresk (27.3), Maria Fred (27.3), Michael Fred (27.3), Al Prawda (27), Stanley Chin (26.26), Regina Cardaci (23.82), Tana Piccirillo (23.44), Denise Hughes (23.44), James McDougall (23.4), Kailey Uresk (23.1), Dennis Michel (23.1), Debbi Hole (22.56), Marguerite Macagnone (22.08), Deirre Bambrick-Oriani (21.72), Mitchell Strong (21.56), Alex Linares (21), Louise Senato (21), David Chan (19.62), Warren Drezen (19.52), Gladys Campoverde (19.49), Robert Mayer (18.92), Dolores Doman (18.9) Kristin McNamara (18.9), Larry Kurtzman (18.9), Peter Farmer (18.05), Bill Herbold (17.76), Laurel Frankel (17.52), Katrina Rossi (16.8), George Waters (16.8), Douglas Williams (14.7), Ariana Staiano (14.7), Victor Rossi (14.7), Steve Rossi (14.7), Daniel Stratford (14.7), Suzanne Corrie Del-Cid (14.7), David Frisone (14.7), Joanne Palisi (12.93), Robert Shaller (12.62), Geralynn Krebs (12.6), Rich Bury (12.6), Grant Radtke (12.6), Elaine Richards (12.6), Vincent Moran (12.6), Rosemary Jones (12.6), Suzanne Nelson (12.6), Alex Eletto (10.5), Thomas Mihailin (10.5), Josephine Bishop (10.5), Neil Ferrara (10.5), Jo Ann Schiesser (10.5), Carolyn Dornstauder (8.4), Darren Pierce (8.4), Irene Drezen (8.4), Harriet Sauer (8.4), Karen Schackner (6.3), Laura Torff (6.3), Francis McNamee (6.3), Vincent Del-Cid (6.3), Claudia Cabanas (4.2), Laura Bury (2.1).

THE MARATHON – ITS PLACE IN THE LIFE OF A RUNNER

If you’re a runner, and have never run a marathon - why is that? And especially if you have been running for quite a few years, and are heading into your own masters-senior years, why haven’t you run a marathon? Until a year and a half ago, I had a neat, convincing, believable, and seemingly sensible package of reasons for explaining why I would never run one. Yet I ran my first marathon ever last November in NYC at the age of 76, and my second marathon last week, also, NYC. So, what changed? I certainly was not getting any younger. Or faster. Or stronger. I ran the NYC marathon precisely because I spent decades absolutely convinced it would be a foolish stupid ridiculous thought that I could ever run a marathon. My package of reasons why I could not was as airtight as anyone’s could be. But one thing, a phrase on a middle school wall from a couple of decades ago, kept haunting me. On my way into that school every day, about 30 years ago, was the phrase, in big letters on the wall, “Whether you think you can or think you can’t, you’re right.” It was of course meant for the kids to see, but passing those words each weekday etched them in some corner of my brain. Thirty years later, I still couldn’t escape thinking about that simple reality. Of will and of faith in yourself. Of determination. Of taking prudent risks to grow. I was always a risk- taker in that manner – why not with my running? I finally flipped a mental switch in May 2021 - to prove myself wrong. To smash my “reasons why not” package.

While all my life I took on challenges and surmounted them, none were as physically and mentally demanding as is running a marathon. I was in no way a gifted runner. I had no athletic ability growing up. No one ever wanted me on their team. Me run a marathon? Would the Yankees expect me to hit home runs for them in major league play? The audacity I had! So, with a combination of positive thinking and sheer either stupidity or guts - I decided – from that phase on the wall - I think I can. At first it just didn’t fit at all. This crazy idea makes no sense for a 76-year-old guy like me! But I read about marathon training, got help from a gifted teacher and runner in our running club and began to own “I can”. I trained. Slowly. Steadily. I had setbacks. A major medical issue arose that impacted my training but didn’t stop me, thanks to the blessing of my understanding doctor. “You run it and we will do surgery after”. That gifted teacher and coach is none other than our own GLIRC’s Vince Del Cid, who not only coached me, but ran with me and watched over me the entire 26.2 miles. As I ran that day in November 2021, I found the experience to be indescribable.

Can you describe the Grand Canyon successfully by showing picture postcards? The impact on my total self-image changed forever in those 26.2 miles of running. The folks when I was a kid that wouldn’t put me on their teams, that laughed at my physical lack of competence, faded from my old, bruised child ego with every step. But I ran that marathon not to prove them wrong. I ran it to prove myself wrong forever believing they were right.

FLASH FORWARD A YEAR – November 6, 2022 – my second marathon, also NYC.

It was an amazing day - thanks to all my friends for their support and wishes, thoughts of which kept me going even at the hard moments when I felt I was hitting the wall. But it was very different from 2021. Conditions were far from ideal – unseasonably and uncomfortably warm and humid, a recipe for quite a hard run. More like August than November. But I was determined to do NYC 2022, feel decent, and finish well. There were ample water/ Gatorade/ porta-potty stations, almost every mile. Unfortunately, I saw runners passing out, vomiting, looking half-dead, many half my age. I drank over a gallon of water by stopping at every water station, took lots of salt tablets, carbohydrate packs every three miles, and iced my head and torso with the bags of ice available at every aid station. A day later, other than a little sore – I felt great. At times during that 2022 marathon, I thought “no way in the world will I do this again!” but by a day or two later - Will I do another marathon – probably, if all systems are go in my body. It’s a bit of a runner’s fever, apparently, or at least it is so with me. And just as I took on the challenge of a marathon – twice – and surmounted it, I’m looking at what, besides another marathon, might be a next, new challenge. Now, I’m realistic. I know there’s an end somewhere. But until I physically can’t, I’ll always think of that phrase – whether you think you can or think you can’t, you’re right. And another big thank you to my coach and colleague, Vince Del-Cid, who was with me every inch of the way in 2022 as well. How grateful I am to have him as a friend and coach.

NEW YEAR’S RESOLUTIONS FOR RUNNERS

The start of a new year is an ideal time to look ahead and plan your running for the next 12 months. Giving yourself a target to aim for can give a little extra motivation, and bring greater satisfaction at the finish line knowing all of your hard training paid off. It’s up to you to make your own goals, but here are some tips to consider.

Work on your weakness

Identify your weak point and work on it to improve your performance. The best way to target your weaknesses is to create a plan.If you’d like to increase your speed, then incorporate speed work training into your weekly schedule. If you’d like to increase your distance, you can start by adding a mile or two to your daily run. Don’t increase by more than 10% per week, so you can give your body a chance to adjust. If your running form is your weakness, this could be the year to improve it. It may be worthwhile to get a running coach to help you, but if you want to do it yourself you will need to figure out which aspects of your form you need to correct. You may want to take videos of yourself running so you can pinpoint the weaknesses in your form. Addressing muscle weakness can help improve your running. Adding cross-training to your routine is an effective way to strengthen supporting muscles.

Start a strength training routine

A lot of runners do not enjoy strength training. Even a 30-minute home workout two times per week will help you become a stronger runner. Pick the days and times you’re going to dedicate to your strength training and set reminders so you don’t forget. If you don’t know where to start, there are strength training plans geared to runners available online for all different ability levels.

Stretch more

Stretching is an important part of fitness, especially for runners, but we often neglect this important part of recovery. Taking time every day to stretch will help prevent injuries and improve your form so you can run more efficiently. Plan to spend just five minutes after every run stretching out areas of tightness. It doesn’t sound like much, but over time it’ll help keep you healthier. Stretching helps increase blood flow, ease muscle tension and speed up recovery. A yoga class offers more structure, and is a good way to get your stretching in and meet new people.

Do strides after your run

Strides are a great way to improve your fitness and form and prepare your body for the next day’s run. You don’t need to do them every day, but plan to add them after at least two of your easy runs every week.

Take your easy days easy

A lot of runners are guilty of going too hard on their easy days, compromising their ability to recover so they can perform well in their workouts. Choose the pace you know you should be running for your recovery runs, and don’t allow yourself to go any faster.

Use strategies to prevent yourself from going too quickly, whether you listen to slower-paced music, or invite a less-speedy friend to come along with you to help you ease up.

Add post-run nutrition

What you eat in the minutes following your workout will have a significant impact on your body’s ability to recover before your next run, so make it your goal to eat within 30 minutes of completing a run. This doesn’t have to be a full meal, but even a quick snack will help kick-start the recovery process so you can perform well in your next run.

Go to bed 30 minutes early

There are so many health and performance benefits of getting good sleep, so make it your goal this year to finally get enough shut-eye. Create a bedtime routine that involves shutting off the electronics to ease yourself into sleep readiness, and get yourself to bed in enough time to allow seven to eight hours of sleep. If getting to bed half an hour early is too difficult at first, start with even 10-15 minutes early and gradually work your way from there.

Make it not about you

Make it a goal to encourage someone else to run this year. Find people who just need a little gentle encouragement, and it can be just as fulfilling to see a friend run their first 5k as it was to run your own first race.

Listen to your body

Runners are known for their ability to push through pain and discomfort, but we often go too far. Make it your goal to listen more closely to what your body is trying to tell you. Back off when it needs rest. Feed it when it’s hungry. Stop when it hurts and resume when your body is ready. A lot of injury times can be shortened if you have patience and give your body a chance to heal. Most importantly, have that nagging pain or recurring injury checked out by a sports injury specialist who can find the root cause and provide the proper treatment to end the cycle of re-injury.

Cold Spring Chiropractic specializes in treating all types of injury with a personal treatment plan to bring your body back into balance, relieving pain and restoring your range of motion so you can get back to what you love to do.
