Dear Fellow Club Members:

At a meeting of the Board of Directors held on January 10th, I was elected and am now honored to serve as your President of the Greater Long Island Running Club for 2023. I, along with my fellow elected Officers - Paul Fetscher as Vice President, Frank Capone as Treasurer, and Tracey Epstein as Secretary & Compliance Officer, will fulfill the Club’s commitments by continuing to promote running, walking, physical fitness, and healthy lifestyles among a diverse membership throughout our Long Island community. Through our leadership team and with the support of the Board and our management team led by our General Manager, Suzanne Nelson, the Club will continue to strive towards encouraging meaningful relationships and a sense of service through volunteerism among our members, community groups, multi sport events, and by raising funds for charitable causes that in turn benefit our Long Island community.

The remainder of our Board consists of Eva Casale, Mindy Davidson, Barbara Davis, Carl Grossbard, Glenn Morse, and Thaddeus Nelson. They are a fine team that has come together during this past year and will continue to work hard in maintaining GLIRC as the industry leader on Long Island. Filling the shoes of two former officers, Carl Grossbard as President and Mindy Davidson as Vice President, both with over 25 years on the Board, will be easier for Paul and me since they are still on the Board and able to provide a wealth of resourceful experience. I and the Board thank them for the many years they served as officers.

I have been a member of GLIRC for ten years and have served on the Board for seven years. I have been a member of the GLIRC Racing Team for seven years and have served on several committees of the Board. As a runner who has participated in many GLIRC events, I have met so many wonderful people over the years who have shared their GLIRC experiences with me, which in turn will enable me to use their feedback and channel it back in a positive and productive way to you.

This is YOUR Club and the support from our members will enable us to continue to fly that GLIRC flag high. It is with your support that we are able to give back to the community. I have witnessed firsthand the impact you have made on this Club, and I thank every one of you for that. We are always looking for our members to get involved, whether they volunteer at an event, serve on a committee, or even run for the Board. Always feel free to drop me a note if you want to get involved and be part of a great team.

My vision for this upcoming year is simple: (1) make every event a fun and memorable experience; (2) raise funds for charitable causes here on Long Island; (3) provide more scholarships to high school students; (4) and to provide a greater value for being a member of GLIRC. My mother once told me “Charity begins at home”…well, that home is here on Long Island. To take it one step further, let me say, “Charity begins at the GLIRC starting line.”

Fellow members, as your President I have some tough challenges ahead, but with everyone’s support, those challenges can be met and overcome. I can assure you that the entire Board has its heart in the right place and we will work hard for you and our Long Island community.

Sincerely,

Greater Long Island Running Club

EMILY SISSON BREAKS HER OWN HALF MARATHON AMERICAN RECORD

Emily Sisson broke her own American Record at the Houston Half Marathon in 1:06:52, taking 19 seconds off her previous record time of 1:07:52.

Sisson, 31, ran 5:06 pace for 13.1 miles. Hiwot Gebremaryam of Ethiopia won the race in 1:06:28. She was out alone in front after a blistering opening 5K of 15:14 (4:54 per mile). But as the miles progressed, Sisson closed the gap from 29 seconds in the middle of the race and down to 24 seconds at the finish, but she never came close to Gebremaryam who ran away with the victory from start to finish.

Sisson, like Gebremaryam, went out FAST running 15:31 for the opening 5K. She slowed throughout the race, forcing people to question what she could do if she ran a more evenly-paced effort. Some race calculators estimate that based off her marathon time, Sisson’s half marathon should be arou nd 1:06:00! We will have to see what 2023 brings for this American star!

5 tips on sickness, stress, and running

2

The 3 day rule... if you feel under the weather or have extra life stress, take 3 days off 3 days has been proven to have an extremely limited impact on fitness but can have a huge impact on RECOVERY and overall feeling while running.

Rest is when growth and adaptation occur. We tend to think of rest as dull and unimportant, but it's actually an active process. When we rest our bodies get stronger, Our brains process info and emotion. Rest is not separate from the work, It's part of it. don't run simply because you dont want to rest! 1 4 5

Are you feeling under the weather? the typical rule outlined by the International Institute of Sports Medicine is that if the sickness is "below the neck, don't run".

3

Stress is stress. Your body does not know the difference from running stress or life stress. When life gives throws unexpected tasks in your way that interrupt your training, take them in stride and don't try to miss sleep or recovery to get in your miles. This will lead only to burn out and or illness.

If you are running with a cold, running on the treadmill is a great option. This allows you to the ability to truly control pace and effort as well as stop immediately if you start to feel worse.

What is Runner ’s Knee and What Causes it?

Your knees act as your body’s shock absorbers, cushioning your body’s impact with the ground, while converting that force into energy and propulsion Without good stability to support the bones, ligaments, tendons, and muscles surrounding the knee, the menisci and patella can become overly stressed, resulting in pain and injury Factors such as muscle weakness, tightness, and imbalances can throw off alignment in the knee If the kneecap is off track it can rub against the femur, causing knee pain and swelling

Patellofemoral pain syndrome (PFPS) is one of the most common running injuries Runner ’s knee is pain around the kneecap that usually is worse when running uphill, downhill or going up and down stairs Runner's knee most often happens with increased mileage, but it can also be related to bad running form and poor core strength Other causes could be overpronation (excessive inward foot rolling) and weak quads, hips, or glutes These imbalances or weaknesses will have a greater effect with increased distances Therefore it is very important to properly identify what is contributing to the injury and pain

If you ignore the pain and continue running at the same intensity it will only make the issue worse Seeking treatment earlier will allow you to take less time off and get back to your top form sooner Depending on the severity of the pain and injury you may be able to continue training with reduced mileage and adding extra rest days You can also cross train with knee-friendly activities like biking, swimming or the elliptical to maintain aerobic conditioning

Finding the source

Although you feel the pain in your knee, the true source usually lies above or below the knee joint Weakness in your hips and core, which control the movement of your pelvis and thighs, can cause your knees to drift inward, driving your kneecap out of alignment How your foot strikes the ground with each step can throw your knee off track Weakness in the muscles that stabilize your lower leg and flex your toes can also contribute to knee pain It is important to trace back to the root cause of the pain, and then focus on correcting it

Treatment

For mild cases of knee pain, you can try home treatment with ice, anti-inflammatories like ibuprofen or naproxen, and scaling back on training Taping or knee braces can help, but work best when combined with an exercise and stretching program If knee pain lingers for more than a week, worsens during or after exercise, or interferes with the way you walk or run, it's time to have it checked out by a sports injury specialist The faster you get treated, the faster you'll recover

Cold Laser therapy is highly effective in treating knee pain, especially runner ’s knee and meniscus tears Cold Laser therapy promotes faster recovery, restoration of normal tissue function and helps prevent injury by reducing scar-tissue build-up and promoting ideal muscle length through the healing process Cold laser therapy increases circulation by drawing water, oxygen, and nutrients to the damaged area, which creates an optimal healing environment that reduces inflammation, muscle spasms, stiffness, and pain

Preventing Runner's knee

Adding strength training to your routine will help prevent a host of injuries Stabilizing the kinetic chain through strengthening of the hips and core region can help you avoid runner's knee Some exercises you can do include planks, clamshells, the bridge, and side leg lifts Another important preventative measure is listening to your body, paying attention to any pain, tightness and/or soreness, and having any nagging, persistent aches and pains checked out

If pain persists and home remedies have lost their effectiveness, you should seek treatment and have your injury evaluated It is important to pinpoint the factors that are contributing to the injury and devise a corresponding treatment plan While physical therapy focuses on strength and coordination, chiropractic sports injury care improves joint mobilization, ensuring that all the joints are moving correctly in coordination with the soft tissue Just as every runner is unique, every injury has different causes The key is finding the specific area of tension and tightness in the hips, quadriceps, low back or abdominal muscles and getting that area to move better, along with strengthening and stabilizing the hip, knee, foot and lower leg

Active Release Technique® and Graston Technique® involve intense active movement-based massage treatment, which sets it apart from passive massage or physical therapy ART and GT promote faster recovery, restoration of normal tissue function and prevents future injury

Active Release Technique and Graston Technique release the buildup of dense scar tissue which allows tissue to heal in the correct patterns to restore normal function and increase performance

The techniques and therapy provided by Cold Spring Chiropractic are natural and non-invasive and have successfully helped many athletes come back faster from injury and return to pain-free running

RUNNING WITH YOUR DOG

Just like humans, dogs need daily exercise for their health and happiness. Also, just like humans, American pets seem to tip the scales a bit. It is estimated that 52% of dogs are overweight or obese. Walking or running with your dog on a leash is a great way to get in your run, and give Fido some exercise!!

NOT ALL DOGS ARE RUNNERS

According to Dr. Kearns "Older dogs may have joint problems that can slow them down or make running uncomfortable. Dogs with short legs may not be able to keep up with the pace you'd like to maintain, She also stated that larger breeds are prone to hip dysplasia, an abnormal formation of the hip socket that can lead to arthritis." Check with your vet before starting to run with your dog!

TIPS & TRICKS FOR RUNNING WITH YOUR DOG

Start out slow. A sedantary person can not jump right into a 5 mile a day routine, neither can a dog.

Don't skip your warm up. Dogs need time to get moving as well and it gives them some time to sniff and go to the bathroom before they get running.

Don't forget tick preventatives. Your furry friend might love the out doors, but ticks can play havoc on your best friend. always check for ticks after a run!

HEAD FOR THE TRAILS

While we wear shoes and don't think about every piece of glass or debris on the road, dogs are far more susceptible to cuts and injuries from the road. The road can also get very hot, often twice as hot as the air temperature, this can cause burns on your dogs feet! The asphalt also has a far higher impact than dirt, lessening the impact on your dog's joints will keep them happy and wanting more! The trails are also full of sights, sounds, and smells your dog will love!

BASIC COMMANDS & EXTRA THOUGHTS

Using a 4-6 ft. leash is best, many companies sell bungie leashes that can go around your waist so you are hands free. This will allow you to teach your dog some hand commands such as left, right and stop. Purchasing a collapsible travel bowl is also a great option for hydration. Your dog will get more thirsty than you when running, make sure to take a few water breaks!

HELPING KENYA THROUGH RUNNING

th trip to Kenyan; it gets better every year

Prior to our annual pilgrimage to Kenya from December 9 – 19, the Richard M Brodsky Foundation sponsored the only marathon on World AIDS Day in North America Rockaway boardwalk was the location, an ideal course because there is no traffic It was the coldest, windiest day of autumn and we had a modest turnout The offer still holds that if anyone did not show up cause it was too cold, I will mail your t-shirt

Kenya has been very welcoming to my wife Jodi, Dr Richard Sartori, Jameelah Aziz, and myself Combined, we have visited there 42 times since 2006 Every year is a new adventure This year we got to visit the equator where I proposed to Jodi again and she said YES

We also staged our 1st ever 5K free AIDS run/walk in Dunga, Kenya Jodi did win 1st place female overall, although it was a close call between the cow and goat Dr Sartori donated the medicine and examined & treated 128 orphans while a clinical officer cared for 40 adults at 4 orphan dinner dances for 641 Kenyan orphans Jameelah & friends donated 215 pounds of clothing which was given away at the dinner dances Major partying and dancing occurred at the dinner dances at Mama Sarah’s, Pres Obama’s late grandmother who recently passed away at 99; Dr Bonyo’s Mama Pilista Bonyo Memorial Health Center; Pastor Paul’s Word Academy; and Jiu Pachi, headed up by Eunice Owino Eunice also hosted art lessons + a concert by very talented Kenyan artists & musicians: Sam Olu, Edward Orato, George Omondi Odongo, Kysh Roberts and Gabiro MTU Necessary

The kids loved dancing and singing with Kysh Robert’s and Gabiro MTU Necessary

We also hosted a Meet & Greet dinner our 1st night in Kisumu; we gave all 37 guests the 2021 World AIDS Marathon t-shirt which featured the image of Theresa Russo

The image on the shirt was donated by Stephen Bennett and his work appears on United Nations postage stamps This was my Foundation’s way of thanking the Theresa Foundation for providing two grants in 2021 for special needs kids, more specifically for art lessons & concerts in Kenya Donations are appreciated and can be made via this link, https://grouprev com/WAM2022

Anyone donating $100 will receive a World AIDS Marathon dryfit t-shirt

SRC 10 Mile Run to the Blue Point Brewery in Memory of Ric DiVeglio

What a difference a year makes! Fast forward one year from 2022 and mother nature decided to take it a little easier on the athletes lining up for the 2023 SRC 10 Mile Run to the Blue Point Brewery With temperatures in the mid 30s, many brave athletes were even wearing shorts! Once the action got underway it was Tim Steiskal who set out at a blazing pace for the first half mile, forcing the entire group to play chase. Once the dust settled however it was Ned Trim of Brooklyn who quickly started to open up a gap on the field a few miles in. Ned would continue on to take the win in 52:58 Second would go to Paolo Fiore in 54:50, and third would go to GLIRC member Dan Gargaro in 55:02 On the Women's side it was Leigh Anne Sharek taking a sizeable win in 58:21 over Alyssa Salese (1:00:18), and rounding out the podium in a fight for second the whole race was Kelly Iocca (1:00:29)

A message from your Race Directors: This year ' s race was another incredibly successful chapter in what has become a beloved treasure of the winter racing scene. Thank you to all the racers for contributing to one of the fastest and deepest 10M races around; to all the volunteers who greet winter conditions and grateful runners with nothing but smiles and encouragement; to all the sponsors and supporters for helping make this event possible and raising so much for deserving charities; and to all the post-race partiers for celebrating with us! One thing is for sure -we honored our friend and race founder, Ric DiVeglio, with all the smiles and cheers from 1500+ people this year.

Once the race was done it was a half mile cooldown as runners jogged back to Blue Point Brewery to celebrate their accomplishments. Once there runners were greeted with an amazing array of music from Trade Winds, a full spread of Italian food from Valentino's Pizza and Restaurant , and of course, a free beer from Blue Point Brewery! Runners laughed, danced, and celebrated having an absolutely awesome time, the tent was buzzing with laughter and joy!

Men's winner Ned Trim Leigh Anne Sharek

TRAINING ON A TREADMILL OR RUNNING OUTDOORS; WHICH IS MORE EFFECTIVE

The debate can on and on about whether training on a treadmill is more effective than running outdoors. I’ve read many articles about runners who say they can get great results from treadmill workouts. But, I have also read about many runners who say running outdoors is clearly better. Well, I’ve had 35 years of experience running on a treadmill at my house. I have simulated my outdoor workouts on many occasions and I do have some interesting results. So first we’ll go over the pros and cons of each one. Then we’ll go over why I use a treadmill and what are my results.

Treadmill Pros: 1) No weather or temperature constraints. 2) Easy to control pace. 3) Convenient. 4) You can simulate workouts and race conditions. 5) You can avoid bad weather conditions like snow and Ice. 6) Easier on Joints. 7) When you’re tired, you can just stop. Treadmill Cons: 1) Can be boring. 2) Can’t make turns. 3) Can’t run downhill (unless you have a special treadmill). 4) Some risk of injury (falling off the belt). Running Outdoors: Pros: 1) Burns more calories. 2) Prepares you for road races. 3) Running on stiffer surfaces like asphalt and concrete will increase leg strength. 4) Provides more variety. 4) Inexpensive. 5) It can be motivating. Running Outdoors: Cons: 1) Some risk of injury due to falls, darkness, cars, cyclists and dogs. 2) Dependent on weather conditions. 3) If you get tired far from your house especially on long runs, can be a challenge getting back. 4) Dressing incorrectly (too much clothing on when you warm-up or not enough and your freezing).

TRAINING ON A TREADMILL OR RUNNING OUTDOORS; WHICH IS MORE EFFECTIVE

So you’ve seen the pros and cons of running on a treadmill vs. running outdoors. Now I will give you some results from treadmill training. I believe it was the winter of 2016. January and February of 2016 saw record snowfall and temperatures. January 23, 2016 a blizzard hit with 27.5” of snow. February 11th - 12th we had another 25-30” of snow. In that two month stretch the temperatures hit -1 degrees and in February it was -15 degrees with the wind chill. We had set a record with 30 days straight with 2’ of snow on the ground. So it was very dangerous to go out on the roads and run. So I ran all of January and February on the treadmill. I simulated every track workout I could do on the treadmill. Interval workouts, tempo runs, long runs and slow recovery runs. I was training for the Kings Park 15K and the long runs were very important for me to do. The last week in February I did a long run of two hours on the treadmill including 20 minutes of inclines at the end of the run. So I should be in great shape, right? Well the weather cleared up a bit and the next weekend I did 10 miles or so at Sunken Meadow. This long run included hills. I ran for about 1:20 (80 minutes). From the beginning my breathing wasn’t that great like, I had not run for awhile. I felt better and continued. At about an hour into the run my legs were really struggling to go. I never felt right. It was like I was out of shape. Remember, I had run a two hour long run on the treadmill the week before. But, I felt like I ran a marathon. I woke up the next morning and could barely move my legs because they were so tight. The next day after that was just as bad. The third day after that run I could move my legs a little better. But I still couldn’t run. So I got a short run in on Wednesday, four days after that Saturday long run. This taught me a lot about the differences treadmill running has versus running outdoors. I think treadmill running is about 50 – 60% as effective as outdoor running. It’s a lot tougher to run outdoors. Part of it is that the treadmill does some of the work for you by feeding the belt to you. Plus, on the roads you have to work more of your leg muscles landing on the concrete or asphalt then pushing back off the ground. Also, it was windy, which is way tougher than running on a treadmill. Having more clothes on and sweating added some weight that your body has to carry versus being in shorts on a treadmill. In closing, I still love my treadmill because every time it rains or snows or it’s too cold out, you can still get a workout in. If I wasn’t able to run in that two month stretch that included two blizzards and frigid temperatures, I would have been out-of-shape. At least it kept me in the game. It was better than not running. So like it or not, the treadmill is here to stay and I’m glad I own one. See you on the roads!
