Dívan skáldsins -Góða nótt, sagði skáldið, og dó Það var barið. Ég drattaðist til dyra.

Aldrei friður.

Andskotans.

Maður nýkominn heim. Ég bý í gömlu húsi á Grettisgötunni og ég kæri mig ekkert um heimsóknir.

Fyrir utan stóð skáldið. Það var ekki gamalt þetta skáld. Nei, þetta var ungt skáld sem stóð þarna á pallinum.

The poet’s divan -Good night, said the poet, and died Someone was knocking at the door.

I, rather annoyed, I had go to see who it was.

Oh - never any peace.

Blasted.

I just came home a minute ago.

I live in an old house in Grettisgata.

I don´t like visitors.

When I opened the door, I saw that it was the poet who had knocked.

He was not old. No, this was a young poet who stood there outside.

Bara stóð þarna. Það var rok.

Laufin fuku um í rennisteininum gul og rauð og græn og brún. Sum voru límd föst í pollum, því einhver hraglandi hafði verið fyrr um daginn. Októberveður.

Skáldið tók kveðju minni. Ég varð víst að bjóða því inn.

Umkomulausara skáld hafði ég ekki séð.

Yfirhöfnin sem einhvern tíma hafði víst verið græn, bar ekki lengur merki neins afgerandi litar. Hún hékk út af öxlum skáldsins, og fyrir neðan ermina tók við hönd, sinaber og gul.

He just stood there, motionless.

It was windy autumn night.

Withered leaves were blown about on the pavement, yellow, red, green, brown.

Some of them were stuck in mud-pools, as some snow had been there earlier that day.

Just as weather tends to be in October.

I said hello to the poet, and he answered back: hello.

Would I really be compelled to invite him to enter.

Never before had I seen so wretched and helpless a poet. His overcoat, I assume originally green, now seemed to be of some greyish no color. This coat was as if just hanging off his shoulders, and where the sleeves ended, a pale, haggard hand took over.

Hárið, sem hvorki var dökkt né ljóst, ýfðist í haustvindinum.

Augun sem hvorki voru blá né brún horfðu eiginlega ekki á neitt.

Sem framhald af hönd skáldsins tók við brúnleitur vaðsekkur, eldgamall, snjáður.

Ungt horað skáld með gamlan vaðsekk stóð þarna fyrir utan. Ég varð víst að bjóða því inn. Ég hitaði kaffi. Ég man þetta eins og það hefði gerst í gær.

Umræðuefni reyndist örðugt að finna.

His hair was blown to and fro by the autumn-wind. His hair neither blond nor dark.

His eyes neither blue nor brown.

His gaze as if he was not looking at anything at all.

In continuation of the poet´s hand was the little case he was holding.

Very old and worn-out small suitcase.

A young, haggard poet stood there at my door, holding an old little case.

I was compelled to invite him to enter.

I made some coffee.

I now recall this as clearly as if it had happened yesterday.

Carrying on a conversation about something was really difficult.

Á endanum neyddist ég til að bjóða skáldinu að gista, sofa á dívaninum mínum.

Annars værum við sennilega enn að drekka þetta kvöldkaffi, umræðulaust.

Hún Branda mín varð móðguð þegar ég eftirlét skáldinu dívaninn, dinglaði skottinu og flutti sig yfir í stólinn með krosssaumspúðanum og sofnaði aftur.

Mér gekk ekki illa að sofna þrátt fyrir kaffið og gestinn.

In the end I had to ask him if would like to stay during the night.

If he could use the divan to sleep on.

If I hadn´t, we would most likely be still sitting at my kitchen-table drinking that coffee - without finding anything to talk about.

My cat Branda was offended when I allowed the poet to use her divan.

She moved her tail to and fro, annoyed, and jumped onto the chair and its crossstich pillow, and went to sleep again.

I fell asleep quickly in spite of the coffee and the guest.

Þegar passaði fyrir mig að fara í vinnuna morguninn eftir var skáldið vaknað og búið að hita morgunkaffi.

Jæja þá. Mér var alveg sama. Skáldið mátti vel hita sér kaffi. Ég sá að það hafði verið að vinna. Blöð og kúlupenni lágu á litla borðinu við dívaninn.

Nú er mynd af þessum dívan mínum, -dívan skáldsins -- og litla borðinu, í blöðunum.

Og skáldið er horfið. Ég gæti eflaust selt dívangarminn og borðkrílið fyrir of fjár, af því að

When it was time for me to go to work the next morning, the poet was already up, and had made some coffee for breakfast.

That was no problem. I didn´t mind if the poet made some coffee in my kitchen.

I could see that he had been working.

There was a pen on the little table there on one side of the divan, and some papers.

Now, a photo of this divan, my old divan, -- the poet´s divan -- and the little table is in the newspapers.

The poet is not here any more.

I suppose I could sell this old tattered divan and that tiny table for lots of money now, because

skáldið, sem nú er orðið frægt, hefur sofið á dívaninum og skrifað við borðið.

En ég vil það ekki, ef skáldið skyldi koma aftur.

-Það er víst kominn háttatími, voru síðustu orð skáldsins.

-Góða nótt, sagði skáldið og dó.

Nú er bara minningin eftir.

Branda sefur nú aftur á dívaninum.

Skyldi skáldið hafa átt fjölskyldu?

Skyldu allir þeir, sem nú þykjast hafa þekkt það, nokkurn tíma hafa talað við það?

the poet, that now is famous, has slept on that divan, and written something sitting at this table.

But I am not going to do that, in case the poet returns.

-I suppose there is time to go to bed, were the last words spoken by him.

-Good night, said the poet, and died.

The only thing left is memories.

Branda has the divan for herself now to sleep on.

I wonder if the poet ever had a family?

I wonder if all the people that now claim to have known him, ever knew him, ever spoke to him?

Það er víst enginn vandi að eignast kunningja þegar maður er frægur, -- en lítið gagn í kunningjum þegar maður er dáinn.

Síminn minn er alltaf að hringja núna.

-- Ja, ég var raunar að hugsa um að hætta að hafa síma, spara mér símann, því ég talaði aldrei í hann, hef hann bara af öryggisástæðum því það er gott fyrir fólk sem býr eitt að hafa síma.

-- Nú eða af gömlum vana, eða kom því ekki í verk að segja honum upp.-Síminn minn er alltaf að hringja núna.

Blöðin eru að spyrja mig um skáldið.

I suppose that it is easy to make “friends” when you are famous, -- but what are they worth when you are dead?

My phone is always ringing these days.

-- Actually, I thought about ridding myself of that phone, save some money on that, as I never used it.

I just keep it for the sake of safety, as it is a wise thing when you live alone to have a telephone.

-- Or it had just become a habit to have it there, or just never bothered to close it.

My phone is always ringing these days.

The daily papers are asking me all about the poet.

Eitthvert forlag gaf þeim upp mitt númer. Það er víst forlagið sem gefur út verkin skáldsins.

Hvað get ég sagt þeim? Þetta skáld var ekki fagurt? Það vissi að það skorti allan persónusjarma? Það hafði ekki kjark til að olnboga sig áfram? Það var lokað inni í skel? Þangað var engum boðið? Ég veit ekki hvort það hafði nokkurn tíma elskað eða verið elskað af nokkurri persónu?

Skyldi þetta skáld nokkurn tíma hafa sofið hjá?

Viðmót þess sýndi ekki tortryggni, ekki uppgjöf, en var svo óafgerandi

Some book-publisher gave the press my phone-number. I suppose it is the one that publishes the writings of the poet.

What can I tell them?

This poet was not a handsome man at all.

He knew that he was not charming?

He did not have the guts to push and fight to promote himself?

He was as if locked inside a shell?

Nobody was allowed to enter that?

I do not know if he ever loved, or if he was ever loved by anyone?

I wonder if he ever made love in bed?

He did not show any distrust, neither did he look as if he was giving up. Everything about him was so eh, so indecisive, or humble

að engum datt í hug að ávarpa þetta skáld eða brosa til þess.

Gat ég sagt blaðamönnunum að skáldið, sem bjó hér allan þennan tíma, hafi í rauninni aldrei sagt neitt gáfulegt, aldrei sagt neitt skemmtilegt -- ekki einu sinni spurt hvort það gæti búið hér?

Gat ég sagt þeim að klaufalegri framkomu en hjá þessu skáldi hafi ég aldrei kynnst?

Gat ég sagt þeim að þetta skáld átti ekki neitt -- kunni raunar ekkert með fé að fara þá sjaldan því áskotnaðist eitthvert smáræði fyrir skrif sín?

that nobody really started to talk to him, say something to him, or even get the idea to smile to him.

Could I tell the press, that the poet who lived here all this time, actually never said anything. Actually never said anything intelligent. Never anything amusing.

He, actually never even asked if he would be allowed to live in my house.

Could I tell them that I never in my whole life met a person that behaved and interacted so awkwardly?

Could I tell them that this poem really did not own anything -- actually had no skill in handling money. Seen clearly when he earned some small fee for his writings?

Því síður gat ég sagt þeim að það taldi að allir væru að gera grín að sér. Það sem var hugsað sem viðurkenning, hrós, var skáldinu stríðni og illkvittnislegt háð.

Og skáldið átti leyndarmál en gat ekki talað um það við neinn.

Gat ég látið nokkurn mann vita að ég vissi það?

Hann hefur eflaust muldrað það við mig í þeirri trú að ég segði engum.

Enda varðar þessa snápa ekkert um viðkvæm mál. Þeir verða að láta sér nægja að blása upp hæfileika misskilins skálds sem dó fyrir aldur fram.

The less I could tell them that he had the feeling that everyone were mocking him.

What was honestly thought as a compliment and an award, he saw as some nasty gibe.

And the poet has a secret of which he could not speak with anyone.

Could I ever let anyone know that I knew what it was?

He, as is were, murmured something about it hoping that I would never tell anyone.

Besides, that these nosy parkers of the press should never get their nose into sensitive personal matters.

Their share will have to be only to emphasize and highlight the talents of a misunderstood poet - who died far too young.

Nú er mynd af dívaninum mínum, --dívan skáldsins-- og borðkrílinu mínu, í blaðinu. Þeir komu með ljósmyndara og reyndu að spyrja mig spjörunum úr um skáldið.

-Nei, ekki veit ég til þess að hann hafi skilið neitt eftir sig.

-Handrit?

-Ekki svo ég viti.

Útgefendurnir komu einnig og spurðu hvort ég hefði örugglega ekki fundið neitt eftir skáldið. Þeir vissu, sögðu þeir, að hann var hæfileikaríkur, og þeir ætluðu að gefa út meira en þessar tvær sögur sem hann hafði látið þá fá fyrir löngu.

Now there is a photo in the daily papers of my divan --- the poet´s divan -- and my little table.

They brought a photographer along.

And they tried to have me tell them something about the poet.

-No, I don´t think he left anything here.

-Some handwriting, or drafts?

-Not that I know.

The publishers also came to my house.

They asked me if I were completely sure about not having found anything written by the poet.

They affirmed that they knew well that he had been a talented writer. They, for sure, were going to publish more of his works, more than these two novels they already published.

-Nei, ég hef ekki fundið nein handrit sem hann gæti hafa skilið eftir hér.

Og það var satt, þar til Branda fór að klóra í eitthvað undir dívaninum. Ég hélt hún hefði gert eitthvað af sér, og bograði þunglamalega niður á fjóra fætur til þess að gá undir dívaninn.

Branda hafði ekkert gert annað en segja mér að þarna var þessi snjáði vaðsekkur. Ég dró hann fram á gólf. Það var farið að kvölda. Ég kveikti ljós,

-No. I have not found any scripts or drafts that he could have left here.

And this was true, until Branda started scratching at something under the divan.

At first I thought that she had done something unwanted there. So I crawled, clumsily, on my four, to peep under the divan.

Branda had not done anything other than letting me know that there was that tattered little case there.

I dragged it from under the divan.

It was late.

I turned on the light.

en raunar var ég á leið í bólið. Ég er kvöldsvæfur maður og þarf að vakna til vinnu.

Hér sit ég með gamlan, snjáðan vaðsekk sem á er límdur miði með nafninu mínu á. Þar stendur einnig: MEÐ BEZTU ÞÖKK Ég opnaði auðvitað töskuræfilinn.

Efst lá miði sem á stendur:

I was, actually, about to go to bed. I like to go early to bed in the evening, as I need to get up early to go to work.

Here I sit, holding that old case, on which there is a label, taped on the lid. On it is written my name.

Of course, I opened the old little case.

First thing I saw there was a piece of paper, on which was written:

Mig langar til að gefa þér þessar sögur, en þú mátt engum sýna þær.

Ég blaða í innihaldinu.

Raunar ekki neitt sérlega spenntur. Ég veit sossum ekkert um það sem fram fer í kollinum á svona svokölluðum skáldum og rithöfundum.

Skyldi þetta skáld hafa haft ástríður eins og annað fólk? Ég les nokkrar fyrstu línurnar á nokkrum blöðum.

Finnst þetta ekki tilkomumikið.

Skyldu þessar barnalegu sögur úr hversdagslífinu raunverulega hafa komið fyrir.

I would like to give you these stories of mine, but please do not show them to anyone.

I take a look at some of the papers.

Not actually interested, I admit.

Of course I have no idea about what is going on in the heads of these so-called poets and writers.

I wonder if this poet has ever had desires and passion as do others?

I read the first few lines on some of the sheets.

Not much taken in.

Could these naïve, so seemingly common every-day stories have really happened or not?

Eru þessi ljóð aðeins barnaleg hugsun kjarklauss skálds? Þarna liggur úrklippa úr blaði. Ritdómur um nokkur ljóð eftir þetta skáld.

Mynd af skáldinu í þessum snjáða frakka sínum, með hárið allt út í loftið.

Engu líkara en ritdómar hafi fært ljóðin upp á æðra svið, blásið þau upp sem „nýja stefnu“ (hvað sem það nú er), og upphafið skáldið sem „málsvara lítilmagnans gagnvart óréttlætinu“ -- og alls konar bla bla í þessum dúr til viðbótar.

Branda sefur á dívaninum. Það minnir mig á að ég var á leið í rúmið.

Orðinn framlágur og þreyttur.

Maybe these poems are just some child-like imaginations of a timid writer?

Here I see an article from a paper, that the poet has cut out and kept.

Critics on some poems by him.

A photo of him, wearing that tattered overcoat of his, and his hair terribly untidy.

It just looks as if the critics have exalted the poems to a higher level, claiming them to belong to the “new age trend” (whatever that means), and exalted the poet as “the proponent for those who cannot make it against the injustice of the world”…. And so on along this line.

Branda is asleep on the divan.

That reminds me of the fact that I was about to go to bed. Gotten a bit weary and drained.

Hér finn ég umslag í vaðsekknum, fullt af minnispunktum skáldsins: -það er svo sárt að elska -stefnulaus eins og fiðrildi í logni -tár, sem aldrei hefur verið grátið. (spámaðurinn) -lifa fyrir vonina, deyja fyrir draum sinn (Q4U) og fleira og fleira.

Undir umslaginu eru handrit af sögum.

Hér sit ég búinn að sitja hér alla nóttina við lestur. Ég er dolfallin. Ég get ekki hætt.

I find an envelope in the case, containing some points to remember: -it is painful to love.

-aimless, as a butterfly in calm weather -a tear that no-one ever cried (the prophet) -live for the hope, die for our dream (Q4U) and so on.

Under that envelope there were scripts, or drafts of stories.

Here I sit having been here all night reading.

I am astounded.

I cannot stop reading.

Hver sagan annarri dýpri, og leiðir mann undir látlaust yfirborðið oní eitthvert hyldýpi.

Ég veit að þeir koma aftur og spyrja hvort ég sé viss um að ekki finnist neitt eftir skáldið.

Kannski koma þeir í fyrramálið, og raunar er þetta fyrramál komið. Ég ætti að vera að leggja af stað í vinnuna.

Hér sit ég með gamlan, snjáðan vaðsekk sem á var límdur miði með nafninu mínu á.

Every story so profound. They lead the reader under the plain and fair surface into some abyss.

I know that tomorrow they will come again to ask if I am sure about that nothing whatsoever can be found here of the poet’s writings.

Perhaps they will come in the morning, well, actually, this morning is right now.

I should be going out of the house now going to work.

But here I sit, holding an old tattered case on which my name was written, on a piece of paper taped on it.

Á miðanum sem ég fann efstan í vaðsekknum stendur einnig: MEÐ BEZTU ÞÖKK Ég les aftur á miðann: Mig langar til að gefa þér þessar sögur, en þú mátt engum sýna þær.
