Gamla húsið sem þegir, segir mér sögu sem ég stend hér og horfi á það -- horfi á þetta hús, sem lætur lítið yfir sér hógvært, æðrulaust.

Einu sinni voru gömlu hjónin ung.

Einu sinni voru þau börn. Það var fyrir meira en heilli öld. Þau voru börnin sem fæddust á mölinni, fæddust í tófthúsum, börn fólksins sem fluttist til Reykjavíkur fyrir aldamót. Það voru engar skepnur á mölinni, nema hvað sumir heldri menn áttu hesta. Riðu um göturnar, með harðkúluhatt eða derhúfu.

The silent old house tells me a story as I stand here and look at it.

I look at this house that is so modest, so stoical.

Long ago the old couple were young people. And before that they were children. But that was a century ago.

They were the children who got born in the first village in Iceland, which was really just a group of houses.

Their parents had moved to Reykjavík before the year 1900.

Here there were no sheep. This was a town, not farmland.

Some rich men, though, owned horses. They wore a bower-hat, or a peaked cap, when they rode in town. di

Kannski átti fólkið nokkrar hænur sums staðar, og þá voru þar til egg.

Slíkt þótti góður búbætir, og ekki síðra þótt púturnar gengju í fjöru og bragðið af eggjunum bæri þess keim. Á einhverjum bæjum í nágrenni þessa nýja þéttbýlis voru kýr. Til voru fátækar mæður sem tóku að sér að mjólka á þessum bæjum. Þær fóru fótgangandi báðar leiðir kvölds og morgna, og fengu að launum ofurlitla mjólkurlögg til að taka með heim og gefa barnahópnum sínum.

Mæðurnar og feðurnir sem bjuggu á mölinni sóuðu ekki mjólkinni í að drekka hana sjálf. Henni var skipt milli barnanna. Tófthúsfólk. Í sveitinni voru börn ekki svöng. Í sveitinni var alltaf eitthvað til til að eta, og í sveitinni fengu börn mjólk og fullorðnir fengu mjólk, di

Perhaps some people had a few hens, and that means eggs.

That was considered good addition to food, even if the hens went to the shore where seaweed grows, and that made their eggs taste like seaweed.

On some farms around this newly formed town there were cows.

Sometimes poor mothers in the town area got the job to milk all the cows on these farms. They had to walk on foot to the farm and back, and, and their pay was a little bit of milk in a jug to take home to give to their children. The mothers themselves did not drink any of it, and neither did the fathers. It was only for the kids.

In the country, on the other hand, there was no lack of food. There was even milk for grown-ups too. di

og jafnvel var hægt að hræra pönnukökujukk úr mjólk. Og í það þarf einnig egg.

En börn þeirra sem fluttst höfðu á mölina, fengu nýmeti þegar vel veiddist, tros í ógæftatíð meðan það entist, og stöku sinnum kom lamb á fæti sem gjöf frá ættingjum úr sveitinni.

En tófthúsfólk átti ekki kú, heyjaði ekki, og mjólk sást alls ekki á sumum heimilum.

On the farms, there was even enough milk to make pancake dough. And that needs eggs too.

The children of those who had moved from the country to the town got enough to eat when lots of fish had been gotten from the sea. They then had dried and salted fish when nothing could be fished.

Occasionally, a living lamb was brought as a gift from relatives on farms.

The poor people in the town did not own a cow, they did not make hay.

Some homes never had any milk.

It so happened at times that nothing was there to eat. They owned only the clothes they wore. The peat gathered for heating was often too wet to burn well. Peat has to be well dried to do as fuel. di

Aðeins heldri menn gátu keypt kol.

Eini hitinn sem sumir menn fengu af kolunum, var svitinn við að bera pokana á bakinu frá skipi í skemmu.

Svo komu aðrir menn að kaupa þau og nota í ofninn. Sumir þeirra áttu Burgeis.

Það var atvinnuleysi á Eyrinni.

Kaupið var lágt. Karlar og konur sem ekki voru mikil að líkamsburðum, voru síður ráðin til vinnu. Það var erfitt að bera fisk á börum og breiða. Það þurfti mikið þrek, mikla burði, til erfiðisvinnu, og menn voru matarlitlir og illa skjólklæðum búnir.

Já, margir voru löngum kaldir og soltnir.

Only those who were better off could afford coal.

The only heat that the laboring man got from coal was the sweat when carrying the coal-bags on their back from the ships to the storage.

Then others came there to buy the coal for their furnace. Some had big stoves called Burgeis.

There was unemployment.

Wages were low.

Those who were not physically strong would have less changes to be hired for labor. It was a hard task to carry fish on barrows, and then put the fish out for drying.

Physical strength was needed for tough jobs. Some did not have enough food. Some lacked appropriate clothing. People were often cold and hungry.

Þegar gömlu hjónin voru ung, var bjartsýnin það eina sem þau áttu. Það var að duga eða drepast. Þau giftust og þau kusu að duga.

Fyrst hírðust þau í kjallara vestrí naustum. Börnin fæddust. Það var þröngt og það var þröngt í búi.

When the old couple were a young couple, then optimism and faith in life were their only possessions.

Duga eða drepast means: do or die.

They chose life and got married.

The first years the young couple lived in a basement in the west end of Reykjavík, near the shore where the small boats landed.

The children were born there. There was little room. Food was scarce.

But everything gets well when we trust God. All the children survived.

When our couple -who now are oldwere young, they had each other and abundant love.

He got a job on a fishing-boat. She worked as a washing-woman for the better off. It all turned out well.

The eldest children soon started to work and help.

Years passed. The young couple filled with hope and optimism.

Óskin um að eignast húsið rættist. Það var erfitt að fá timbur og það var erfitt að fá bárujárn. Það voru engir peningar til til að kaupa það fyrir. En samt tókst einhvern veginn að kljúfa þetta. Their dream to own a house came true. It was not easy to get building material such as timber and iron plates for outer protection. Besides, there was no money to buy that.

But somehow they managed.

He did all the carpenter work himself, as hiring labor was not in the picture.

In these times the old method of building a house was not used any more, as now we used timber, coated with corrugated iron sheeting for holding out wind and rain.

Concrete houses were not common in those times. Not yet being built so. And the word alkali-damage (bad concrete due to bad cement) did not exist.

This couple were in love. They had each other, and therefore no obstacle was unsurmountable.

Til voru konur sem misstu fyrirvinnuna, til menn sem misstu móðurina frá barnahópnum.

Til var fólk sem upplifði ekki ást og virðingu hjóna hvort fyrir örðu.

En þessi hjón báru gæfu til að una við sitt. Samhent. Gott fólk. Þessi hjón, sem urðu síðar gömul, áttu alla tíð hvort annað og kærleikann.

Þau komu upp þessu húsi við veginn inn að þvottalaugunum. Þá þótti þetta ekki lítið hús. Þetta þótti rúmgott hús. Nú finnst okkur það lítið, og skiljum ekki hvernig allur þessi hópur gat rúmast þarna.

Og alltaf var pláss fyrir næturgesti.

There were women who lost their husbands, and then there was nobody to work for money for food.

And there were men who lost the mother of their young children.

There were also marriages devoid of love, devoid of respected one for the another.

But our couple were lucky, and they were content with what they had.

They were good people who always worked together. They became old, always had each other - and love.

They managed to build this house of theirs - their own house. This was not considered to be a small house at all, even if nowadays we see it as a small house. Now, we do not understand how the whole family could live there.

And always place for guests.

The road by which the house stands leads to the geothermal water site. di

Vegurinn að laugunum, kallaður Laugavegur, var fyrir austan læk. Þetta hús var semsagt fyrir austan læk, og því ekki akksepterað sem hús í Reykjavík eiginlega, því vesturbærinn taldi sig hina einu sönnu byggð í Reykjavík. Þetta var utan við alla bæjarmenningu að dómi vesturbæjarins.

Sá sem settist að fyrir austan læk, var að flytja brott. Ja, bara svíkja.

Enginn þurfti á því að halda á þessum tíma að vita hvar Breiðholtið var, því það var einhvers staðar á hálendinu og enginn átti erindi þangað. Árbær var sveitabær í sveit sem var handan við tvö fljót, sem kennd eru við Elliða einhvern. Allir vissu að sá bær var til, því þar var gist áður en lagt var á heiðina ríðandi.

The road therefore named Laugavegur. This house was, so, situated “east of the brook”, meaning: not in the West end of town. Therefore, not really considered to be in Reykjavík at all, as the West end was seen as the only true Reykjavík.

Those who moved “east of the brook” had, thus, moved out of the true town. Not good.

In those times nobody knew about any Breiðholt, as that was just a faraway place, hills and wilderness.

Nobody had any errands there. Árbær was a farm in the countryside situated east of two rivers who bear the name of someone called Elliði.

Everyone knew where that fram Árbær was, because when going from Reykjavík eastwards over the moor Hellisheiði to Selfoss on horses, people had to go to Árbær the day before, so that horses could make it all the way over the moor. di

Lækurinn þessi, sem farið var austur fyrir, þegar farið var austur fyrir læk, er nú í ræsi undir götu sem heitir Lækjargata, og er þetta nafn það eina sem minnir fólkið, sem gengur um göturnar, á hann. Hann getur þó huggað sig við að Lækjargata er skrifað með stórum staf, og það eru skilti á ljósastaurum.

Að vísu er stóri stafurinn af því að þetta er sérnafn götu. Ekki lækjar.

Kannski er honum alveg sama.

This “brook” east of which we go when going “east of the brook” is now no longer visible, as it has been put into a drainpipe, hidden under the street named Lækjargata. That name (Brook-street) is the only that reminds the pedestrians there of the brook (lækurinn). For the brook it is nice to know that Lækjargata is capitalized, and there are road signs on street poles.

We admit that the capita L is because this is a name, not that ”the brook” was ever capitalized.

Well, perhaps the brook does not mind at all. The harbor and the city pond are its beginning and end.

Most likely the brook is not dirtier now than it was when the horse dung on the town road got washed into it when it rained. It has, actually, nothing to hide now, has never had. In the old good times, the sun could reflect itself in it. di

Nú er hann í felum undir malbiki.

Enda væri nú á honum olíubrák vegna bílanna, brauðmolar sem endurnar torga ekki, salt af götunum, sígarettustubbar og pulsubréf.

Tjörnin og höfnin eru upphaf hans og endir, og flóð og fjara leika við hann árdegis og síðdegis alla daga ár eftir ár eftir ár, og eflaust var þetta svo áður en (fake) Ingólfur Arnarbur tók hann í tölu bæjarlækja og líklega hefur þessi lækur aldrei heitið neitt, aðeins verið lækurinn.

Kannski Lækurinn? Ég veit ekki hvernig tilfinning það er að vera lækur í ræsi. Kannski á hann sér þá ósk, að skipulagið teikni Lækjargötuna upp á nýtt, opni upp í himininn, og geri litlar göngubrýr, eins og voru. Mikið væri það gaman.

Now the brook is hidden under asphalt. Well, there would be oil from the cars, left-over breadcrumbs that the ducks on the city pond didn’t eat, cigarette filters, and hot dog wrappings.

The harbor and the pond are its beginning and end. Ebb and tide play here twice a day every day.

Year after year. Probably been so before the first settler arrived. Then it became a farm-brook. Perhaps never had a name, only the book.

At the best perhaps the Brook.

I cannot imagine the feeling of being a brook in a drainpipe. Perhaps it would really like to see the sky again, no drainpipe, then little bridges for pedestrians as there used to be in the olden times in Lækjargata.

Wouldn´t that be nice. di

Og allt rusl sem fyki í hann væri hreinsað brott með det samme af appelsínugulgallaklæddum bæjarstarfsmönnum á kaupi skv. samningum. Lækurinn er eldri en allir samningar og bandalög starfsmanna.

Lífið var vinna og meiri vinna.

Sleitulaust erfiði.

Eftir Laugaveginum gengu þvottakonur með óhreina þvottinn á bakinu á leið í laugar, og með blautan þvottinn til baka vestrí bæ að þvotti loknum. Sumir áttu hjólatík til að skrönglast með í eftirdragi. Það var léttara að draga en bera, og ekki eins vossamt á veturna. En vegurinn var grýttur.

And all the trash the wind would blow into the brook would be immediately cleaned up by townemployees wearing orange overalls.

They would get paid according to contracts. The brook is older than all these contracts and unions of employees.

Life was work and more work.

Endless effort and strive.

On the road Laugavegur, leading to the geothermal water pools, women took the dirty laundry, which they carried on their backs. They went by foot from the west end of town, and back, carrying the wet, now clean laundry. Some were lucky to own a barrel to trail along. It was a bit easier to pull than to carry, and not as messy and wet during winter. But the road was bumpy and full of stones. di

Á veturna fraus þvotturinn á baki kvennanna á heimleiðinni, og erfitt var að verja fötin sín þar sem rakinn seig til í handundnum þvottinum.

Þau skírðu húsið Vár, sem er heiti hjúskapargyðjunnar.

Vár er eiginlega sáttmáli. Þetta nafn var tákn tryggðar.

Tryggðin var styrkur í blíðu og stríðu. Á fallegri fjöl sem prýddi útidyrakarminn stóð: VÁR 1909 Það var hún, móðirin, sem valdi húsinu þetta nafn. Þau voru alltaf samhent þessi hjón.

Kannski var það einmitt þess vegna sem allt gekk.

In winter-time, the wet washing, only wrung by the women’s hands, wetted their back. The dampness froze on the clothes they wore.

Our couple named their house Vár, as she is the goddess of matrimony.

Vár actually stands for oaths and agreements. To them this meant the trust they had. Trust was their strength whatever happened.

On a decorative piece of wood put up at the front door there was written: VÁR 1909.

The wife chose this name for the house.

They always worked together.

Perhaps exactly that was the reason for that they always succeeded.

Út um gluggann til norðurs sá út á sjóinn, fjöllin, og á sumrin miðnæturbirtuna á norðurhimni, þegar dagurinn unni sér engrar hvíldar, en rétt dottaði norðan við fjöllin í fjarskanum. Á daginn skein sólin inn um suðurgluggana, og vermdi yndislega, og umferð fólks fékk börnin í húsinu til að líta upp og spekúlera í hverjir þar væru á ferð. This lovely carved piece of wood is actually still hanging in its place: VÁR 1909 From the window of the north side there was a view of the sea, to the mountains, the midnight sun in the northern sky, when the day takes no break, just naps north of the mountains for a brief moment.

During the day, the sun shone through the small windows on the south side, giving some comfortable warmth into the house through the windowpane. Whenever someone passed the house, either walking or riding, the children of the house peeped out of the window and tried curiously to see who it was.

There was a view to all directions.

From here they enjoyed the sight of the Northern Lights gleaming in the darkness of the winter skies. di

tunglið, þungbúin ský, stuttur dagur við vetrarsólhvörf, sem rann á suðurhimin og dvínaði nær samstundis, fluttu hin fegurðstu verk meistarans ísköldum tónum norðursins, og frostrósir á glugga megnuðu ekki að útiloka fegurð sköpunarverksins, svo grimmd veraldarinnar varð að engu í hugum hjónanna sem alla tíð elskuðu hvort annað og virtu, og nutu þess að eiga þetta hús, sem veitti þeim og börnunum skjól fyrir bitrum norðanvindum, grimmum frostum, slagviðri landsynningskaflanna, og þau skulduðu engum neitt.

Sátt við guði og menn.

They watched the moon, the dark heavy clouds, and the sun during the short days of winter-solstice.

Days that began in the south only to end in the south almost immediately. This is Nature’s most beautiful symphony, played with the ice-cold tones of the dark North.

The damp on the windowpanes made the glass opaque instead of transparent, covering it in silvery icy flowers, named frost-roses. The kids thawed a hole on them to peep out and watch the beauty.

The beauty of creation softened the roughness of the world. Because of their love and reverence, all became beautiful. They knew they had a house of their own, a shelter for them and their children from the fierce north wind, the bitter frost, and the rainy southern gales from the sea. They owed nothing to anyone. Lived in peace. di

Konurnar sem fóru í laugar, gengu framhjá húsinu Vár við Laugaveginn. Á bakaleiðinni stöldruðu þvottakonurnar stöku sinnu við til að rétta aðeins úr bakinu og orna sér, en aðeins örstutta stund. Það varð að halda áfram, til að reyna að ná háttum heima. Birtu var oftast farið að bregða í skammdeginu og eftir var að hengja þvottinn til þerris þegar heim kom. Á sumrin var heldur ekki ætlast til að þær væru að slóra, því fleira þurfti að starfa á heimilunum.

En þvottadagar, þótt erfiðisdagar væru, voru kærkomin tilbreyting. Þann dag hittu vinnukonurnar aðrar konur, sem var þá hægt að karpa við ef ekki annað.

The working women passed the house, Vár, on their way to the washing pool. On their way back, they sometimes stopped for a while, laid down their burden and straightened their backs, warmed themselves up inside the house where guests were always welcome.

But they only sat down for a little while. They had to go on. Get back home. Daylight was short in the winter, and when at last the women arrived home, the washing still had to be hung up to dry. The days were long in summer, but then nobody could afford to slow down. There was always too much work waiting to be done. Anyway, washing days were good change. Then the laboring women met other women, and even if nothing more pleasant could be found to talk about, they could at least quarrel over the best place by the hot pool. di

Hestvagnar skröngluðust hjá.

Pósturinn tók stundum farþega austur fyrir fjall.

Allir sem fóru og komu til bæjarins, sáust út um gluggana, en hófadynur eða skrölt í vagni gerði boð á undan þeim velstæðu. Þegar menn fóru ríðandi út úr bænum, var lagt af stað síðla dags vestan úr bæ, og menn voru ferðaglaðir og sumir háværir og við skál.

Fyrsti áfangi var Árbær. Þar var gist, til þess að leggja af stað með óþreytta hesta á heiðina hinn annan dag ferðarinnar, og freista þess að ná á Ölfusá dagleið. Það var margra daga ferð að heimsækja ættingja á Suðurlandinu.

Sometimes the post wagon took passengers over the mountains to the east. Everyone travelling to and from the village could be seen from the house named Vár. Those who had horses could be heard as they approached. The sound of hoofs on the stony road, and the rattle of the wagons, proclaimed their arrival.

When people were going on horseback out of town, they left their homes on the west side of the brook in the afternoon. One could hear their joyful voices. Some had been drinking. The first stage pf the journey was only to Árbær, the farm close to the Elliða-rivers. People stayed overnight at Árbær. Next morning the horses would go all the way to Ölfusá, 50 km away, crossing mountains and moors in one day.

To visit relatives in the southern region of Iceland, a few more days were needed. di

Í húsinu Vár, sem stóð langt austan við læk, var allt hreint og snyrtilegt utanhúss sem innan. Sérhvert verk var unnið af alúð. Aldrei hraut eitt einasta styggðaryrði af vörum í þessu húsi.

Yfir stofudyrunum hékk útsaumuð mynd af burstabæ og DROTTINN BLESSI HEIMILIÐ saumað þar fyrir ofan með skrautlegum stöfum. Það saumaði hún meðan sjónin var góð. Saumaði af mikilli alúð.

Drottinn hefur allan þennan tíma blessað heimilið. Það er skrýtið, en þessi mynd hangir þarna enn. Það er eins og hún sé óbifanleg frá þessum vegg, frá þessum stað yfir stofudyrunum, þar sem hún hefur hangið áratug eftir áratug.

Kannski blessar hann, hann Drottinn, enn allt það fólk sem kemur í þetta hús. di

In this house Vár, east of the brook, everything was clean and neat both inside and out. Every task was carefully carried out. Never ever was a single nasty word heard in this house.

Over the door of the living room there was a picture in a frame, with glass over it. It was a picture of an old farmhouse, embroidered. On it was sewed GOD BLESS THIS HOUSE in decorative letters. This she had sewed while her sight was still good.

God has always blessed this house.

The picture is still hanging there.

Thou mayest find it hard to believe, but it is true. It is as if it cannot be removed from its place, above the door of the former living room, where it has been hanging decade after decade. Perhaps God still blesses all the people that now come into this house. di

Hann sótti enn sjóinn, á þessum árum, gamli maðurinn, því hann var enn ungur þá. Það var langur gangur að heiman í uppsátrin vesturfrá.

Langur gangur til baka með hlutinn sinn, þegar í land kom eftir erfiða róðra.

En hann vissi að heima var hans beðið af konunni og börnunum, og sú vissa flytur fjöll og léttir lúnum göngu sína.

Hún beið hans frá því að hann kvaddi hana með kossi, heitur eftir kaffið í hlýju eldhúsinu og takandi við nestismalnum sem hún hafði útbúið honum.

He went to sea, during these years, the old man; in those days he had not grown very old. A long walk it was from their house down to the shore in the west part of the village, that was on the west side of the brook. And a long walk home, carrying the fish he got as his share after the rowing and fishing and rowing back to shore, on the small boat on the big, rough seas.

He knew his wife and children would be waiting for him.

Knowing that someone loves thee and is waiting for thee to return home is a power that can move mountains and makes the long walk of a tired man lighter than thou mightiest believe. She waited for him from the moment she kissed him goodbye. Then he was warm, having had his coffee in the warm kitchen, accepting the box of bread she prepared for him. di

Hún vonaði, frá þeirri stundu, að hann kæmi heill og lifandi aftur og ekkert kæmi fyrir, því hún gat ekki vitað hvenær þeir ýttu úr vör, hvenær þeir komu að, hvort allt hefði gengið að óskum, hvort hann væri einn gangandi á leiðinni heim, fyrr en hann kom og heilsaði henni með kossi, sem var heitur, þrátt fyrir að andlit hans væri svalt af veðrum og hárið storkið af seltu, og höndin loppin í votum sjóvettlingum, stíf eftir að halda í pokaskjattann á bakinu, alla þessa leið, þungan af slorugu nýmeti, kreppt eftir róðra og erfiði.

She hoped he would return safely, alive, and no misfortune would befall him. She could not know at what moment they pushed the boat out onto the water, and when thy pulled it up the beach, using the heavy waves to aide their own power at every pull. She could not know if they had made it back safely. She could not know whether he was on his way home, walking alone. She only knew for sure when he entered the house, giving her a warm kiss, even if his cheeks were cold, his beard and hair stiff from the salt of the sea-breeze, his hand too cold to have any feeling any more in the wet woollen mittens worn by fishermen, hardly able to move his hands after holding the heavy bag of fresh fish he carried home over his shoulders. Food for the family.

Hugur hennar fylgdi honum allan þennan tíma, og hugur hans, og allt í veröld okkar, var eitt með henni.

Hún treysti Guði, þótt hún bæði hans aldrei neins. Hún aðeins treysti. Það var eins og konan færi með manninum og væri með honum allan tímann, þótt hún væri í raun heima með börnin og þessi endalausu verk sem þurfti að vinna.

Hugur hennar og allt í veröld okkar eitt.

Við steinarnir hérna í fjörunni erum ekki að hafa áhyggjur. Við erum bara að velta því fyrir okkur, hvort allt veltur ekki bara betur í lífinu, ef við höfum ekki áhyggjur af neinu.

Their hands are bony, their fingers neither straight nor flexible anymore. Hands that always did their duty. Hands that always did charitable deeds.

This generation is now gone. May they rest in peace.

Our old couple died with peace in their souls.

The house Vár still is there. Their children sold it, as property in this part of town is now selling for good prices. The children, now grown-up people with children of their own, could do with some money to spend on their own houses. One of them is perhaps buying new furniture for the living-room.

They work hard, all of them, as might be expected; they learned this from their childhood. di

Það er að segja þau eru ekki lengur börn, en þau eru börn þessara foreldra sinna, sem ég minnist svo sterkt, þegar ég stend hér og horfi á gamla húsið, sem nú er búið að selja.

Hugsun mín er bergnumin í tímaleysu.

Börnin tæmdu húsið, utan nokkurra muna, sem ekkert þeirra eða þeirra krakkar höfðu áhuga fyrir.

Ekki veit ég hvort börn þessara foreldra horfinna ströndum, kunna að búa sínum krökkum HEIMILI í þeirri merkingu orðsins sem fylgir útsaumuðu myndinni DROTTINN BLESSI HEIMILIÐ, þar sem mamma var alltaf til taks, ef eitthvað bjátaði á.

The children not children now, of course, as they are grown up people.

They are the descendants of those parents, that I remember so well, as I stand here looking at the old house Vár, that has now been sold.

I feel my thoughts spellbound in a kind of timelessness.

The children took everything out of the house, apart from some things that none of them or their children were interested in keeping.

I don´t know whether they, the descendants of those good people that have now been called to higher duties, know how to give a real HOME to their children. Then I mean a home of love and care, in the sense: DROTTINN BLESSI HEIMILIÐ: Mother was always there if something went wrong.

Ekki veit ég hvort krakkarnir, sem fæddust svo inn í allsnægtaöldina, vöndust því að taka til hendinni.

Kannski er orðið HEIMILI nú farið að tákna íbúð fulla af húsgögnum, íbúð sem lengst af er mannlaus, og ísskápurinn er fullur af mat, sjónvarp í gangi og einn og einn af heimilisfólkinu ýmist á leið inn eða út í erindum sem hinir hafa engan áhuga á.

Hvort sem þessi notalega tilfinning að eiga HEIMILI hefur komist til skila til afkomendanna í allsnægtaættliðinn veit ég ekki.

En þessi tilfinning var þeim er hennar nutu, ómetanlegur bakhjarl í lífinu.

I do not know if the kids that later were born into the new world of extravagance and abundance of every luxury in life, learned to help and work and take care of things.

Perhaps the word HOME now means only a big expensive house, or an apartment filled with expensive furniture. A flat or house where most of the time nobody is at home.

The fridge and the freezer filled with food. The television on. The people that live there either coming home or going out, doing something or going somewhere that is not of any concern to the rest of the family.

Nobody even bothers to ask.

I do not know if this loveable and priceless feeling of a home has been given to the present generation.

Óafvitandi bjuggu þeir að þessu öryggi alla ævi, og þess vegna skiljum við ekki eirðarleysi ungdómsins nú.

En án er ills gengis nema að heiman hafi.

Fyrst var húsið notað fyrir pakkhús fyrir búðina, sem var komin á neðstu hæð í framhúsinu, sem búið var að reisa. Framhliðin á versluninni, sem er tískufataverslun núna, er mjög fín og smart, en það sem er hinum megin, portmegin, bakhliðin, sem snýr að gamla húsinu, er ekki ætlað viðskiptavinum og vegfarendum um Laugaveginn. Þar hrannast upp pappakassar við öskutunnurnar.

But I know for sure that it gave a feeling of self-confidence to be brought up in the kind of HOME I have been describing. Without realizing it, they retained this feeling of security and loving care all their life. That is perhaps why we don´t understand the restlessness and insecurity that youngsters of the new generation feel. The home thou art brought up in, shall become thy life later on too.

The house was now used as a storeroom for the fashion-shop on the ground floor of the big new front-building with its smart façade that has been built on Laugavegur.

On the other hand, the rear of the building, facing the old house and the back yard, is drab and shabby; customers are not supposed to go there. Passers-by on Laugavegur do not see it. Dustbins, used cardboard boxes, rubbish. di

Í bakhliðina er ekki eytt tíma né peningum. Bros afgreiðslufólksins snýr að kúnnanum og buddunni hans. Umbúðum og sorpi er fleygt í snatri í tunnur og í hrúgu út í þetta port, þar sem píláragrindverkið, sem gamli maðurinn smíðaði þegar hann var ungur, lufsast hálffallið, og bárujárn gamla hússins er að byrja að ryðga.

Það varð ekki úr því að gamla húsið yrði rifið, því nýi eigandinn fékk betri hugmynd. Hann flikkaði upp á það og setti upp diskótek og vínveitingastað.

No money and no time are spent on the rear side. The smile of the shopkeeper and shop-assistants is turned towards the customers and their purses and wallets. All the rubbish from the shop is hastily thrown into the back yard; there is not even time to put it into the bins, or rather they could not care less whether it ends up on the ground or in the bins.

The fence the old man himself made around the garden is now half fallen down and some of it broken. The corrugated iron sheeting on the outside walls of the old house is rusty and unpainted.

The new owner did not have the old house pulled down. He had a better idea. He re-decorated it, “did it up” as he called it. He repaired and painted it. What was the brilliant idea? Laugavegur is a popular area for pubs. di

Blikkandi skrautljós voru sett í portið. Grindverkinu fleygt.

Stórt skilti sett upp úti við Laugaveg, og píla inn á baklóðina. Öskutunnurnar og pappakassahrúgan úr versluninni falið á bak við hátt þil og þilið málað. Þeir máluðu stofugólfið skærrautt.

Voru að hugsa um að líma á það, en enduðu á að láta það halda sér og hressa það upp með æpandi lit.

DROTTINN BLESSI HEIMILIÐ, var tekið niður þegar verið var að rífa niður veggfóðrið í stofunni, slípa upp innviðina með slípirokk, og festa upp hentuga, dempaða lýsingu, sem hæfir búlu.

A fancy flash-light display was put up in the alleyway where passers-by could see it, with a big sign and an arrow pointing where to go.

The fence was removed and thrown away. The dustbins and cardboard boxes from the fashion-shop were hidden behind a tall wooden fence, painted in bright colours. The livingroom floor they painted bright red.

For a while they thought of covering it with some new material but came to the conclusion that it would be better to keep it and cheer it up with the brightest of colours.

DROTTINN BLESSI HEIMILIÐ was taken down when the wallpaper in the living-room was torn off. They used the underlying wood and gave it a touch-up.

They put up some light of the gloomy type appropriate for a pub.

DROTTINN BLESSI HEIMILIÐ var á leið í hrúguna við sorptunnunar, þegar einn af rafamgnsmönnunum, sem voru að setja upp í öll horn hátalarakerfið fyrir diskómúsíkina, hengdi myndina upp aftur fyrir ofan stofudyrnar - á sinn stað. Svo brosti hann, því honum þótti þetta skemmtileg tímaskekkja.

Bóndabærinn á myndinni brosti á móti. Þögnin, hið þögla svar, er höfugri en orð. Alúð handa hennar, gömlu konunnar, liggur í hverju spori. Málfá, höfug orð.

Fólkinu, sem hingað á eftir að koma í leit að vímu og gervilífshamingju, veitir ekkert af blessun Drottins frekar en öðrum.

DROTTINN BLESSI HEIMILIÐ was on its way to being shovelled away with other rubbish, when one of the electricians working on the pluggedin stereo system for the music, picked it up and hung it back in its old place above the door, in what used to the be living room but was now that bar. He could not help smiling: he found the anachronism amusing. The old farmhouse in the picture smiled back. Silence, the silent answer, is more profound than words. The care of the hands of the old lady of that house shines forth from every stitch. Words that are not spoken tell a story all the same.

Certainly, those who come here in search of intoxication and pseudojoy, imitated happiness, need the blessing of God no less than others.

Fólkið sem ráfar um Laugaveginn á nóttunni, er hávært. Það syngur. Það æpir. Það öskrar. Það er eins og það spangóli stundum skerandi óhljóðum. Drukknar unglingsstúlkur emja og skrækja. Það trúir þessu enginn nema sá sem býr þarna og heyrir þetta inn um gluggana sína, þegar hann er að reyna að sofa. Þarna eru skrímsli á ferð, ekki menn.

Perhaps the people who wander about in Laugavegur at night are wandering aimlessly through life as well. (--None of them knows that this was the road to the now forgotten washing pool, where women carried heavy burdens of dirty clothes, or clean, wet clothes back.--) Now we have here youngsters clothed according to the latest fashion. They are a noisy lot. The sing, they cry out. They scream.

Sometimes thy howl like wolves or mad dogs, scraping the inside of our ears. Young teenage girls, drunk, howl as if they are being tortured, but it is only supposed to be in fun.

If thou livest in a house on Laugavegur and wantest to sleep at night, thou knowest this to be true. If thou dost not, thou canst not then imagine what it is like. Some of them are monsters, not humans. di

-Maður er oft hvað harðastur og ósanngjarnastur við aðra, þegar maður sér ekki eigin galla, var hún vön að segja, hógvær en ákveðin, gamla konan sem bjó í húsinu Vár við Laugaveginn.

Hún leið engum illt umtal í sín eyru á heimili sínu né utan þess, og kom slíkum umræðum snarlega í annan farveg.

Gamla húsið gömlu hjónanna, var reist fyrir heiðarlega peninga af heiðarlegu fólki. Þaðan sér ekki lengur til hafs.

Sumir sjá aldrei fegurð himinsins hvort eð er.

“It is when we do not see our own faults that we judge other the harshest.” These were the very words she used to say, the late housewife in Vár, the little house on Laugavegur.

She never allowed a bad word, ill talk, gossip or back-biting to enter her ears, neither in her house nor anywhere else, but changed the subject deliberately.

The old house that belonged to our old couple, was built with honestly earned money by honest, hardworking people.

No longer can the sea be seen from its little windows.

Some people never see the beauty of the sea and the sky, anyway.
