It is a privilege to open our 25th Season with the Miami premiere of August Wilson’s penultimate play. Originally performed by Wilson himself, this autobiographical journey lifts up the creative spirit, as Divine. Whether or not you define yourself as an Artist, as a human, you possess the ability to Create: to Imagine an image, an idea, a future – and make it so. Perhaps more than anything else, this notion has driven my own journey and is why I continue to believe in theatre as a very powerful and optimistic tool for empowerment of self and community. If we can imagine it, it can be.

DIRECTOR’S NOTE

August Wilson is one of the most important artists of our time. In what is often called “The Century Cycle” or “Pittsburgh Cycle”, a set of ten plays mostly set in the Hill District of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania where he was born, he chronicled the lives and experiences of African American people in the 20th Century. Through this autobiographical one person show, How I Learned What I Learned, August Wilson shows us the places where he roamed and the people he experienced growing up in the Hill. This play becomes a lexicon to understanding the "characters" in his other works. Then the play also reveals how he as an artist was forged within this crucible of the Hill District. The obstacles August Wilson encountered could have led him down many paths, but the truest path for him was the one that led to the creation of Art. We are in the Hill District and experience the tethering of this artist's soul to the community that gave him his life lessons. The Hill becomes alive as August Wilson tells us of his struggles as a young man to become an artist in America. We see his eagerness to participate in life as he roams the Hill and seeks his passions. He finds his poetic voice and pays honor and respect to the individuals that inspired him to continue on his journey. He highlights the wayward experiences that ignited his passion to chronicle the triumphs that may seem mundane but display the strength and pride of people striving with all energies toward the American Dream. The documentation of these desperate yearnings for dreams to be made whole has made August Wilson one of the greatest chroniclers of American Life. In How I Learned What I Learned he takes us, the willing, into the crucible to feel the fires and challenges us to be better individuals.

PRODUCING
ARTISTIC DIRECTOR'S NOTE
Bari Newport | Producing Artistic Director

In the heart of every artist resides an indomitable spirit, fueled by passion and a relentless pursuit of truth. August Wilson, a luminary of American theatre, exemplified this spirit throughout his illustrious career. His journey, his words, and his legacy continue to illuminate the world of theatre, resonating deeply with all who encounter his work.

August Wilson's transcendent talk, 'The Ground on Which I Stand,' lays a profound foundation for understanding How I Learned What I Learned. In this talk first delivered at the 1996 TCG National Conference, Wilson articulated his belief that African American artists should embrace their cultural heritage as a wellspring of creativity and inspiration. How I Learned What I Learned is a testament to this conviction, as it showcases the rich tapestry of Wilson's own life and experiences, weaving them into the fabric of American drama.

Pittsburgh, particularly the Hill District, served as both the inspiration and crucible for many of Wilson's seminal plays. This vibrant and historically significant neighborhood was a fertile ground where the voices and stories of African Americans resonated with an authenticity that captivated audiences worldwide. How I Learned What I Learned allows us to journey back in time to Pittsburgh's streets and imbibe the essence of a community that shaped Wilson's artistic vision.

Remarkably, How I Learned What I Learned marked August Wilson's first foray into acting, revealing yet another layer of his immense talent. August Wilson's love for poetry, nurtured in his early years, infuses this work with lyrical beauty. His words transcend the stage, painting vivid pictures of the past and inviting us to share in his deeply personal reflections. Tragically, shortly after the premiere of How I Learned What I Learned, August Wilson died of liver cancer, leaving an indelible mark on the theatrical landscape. His legacy endures, not only through his powerful body of work but also through the lives he touched and the voices he amplified.

In How I Learned What I Learned, we celebrate a remarkable artist's journey, one that is as poignant as it is inspirational. Through Wilson's words, we are reminded that the ground on which we stand is fertile with the potential to grow and bloom, nourished by the roots of our own experiences. It is with great reverence that we present this production, inviting you to join us in honoring the enduring legacy of August Wilson.

'Confront the dark parts of yourself, and work to banish them with illumination and forgiveness. Your willingness to wrestle with your demons will cause your angels to sing.' – August Wilson"

Bari Newport** (Producing Artistic Director) joined GableStage as producing artistic director in June 2021. Bari’s tenure follows the legendary leadership of Joseph Adler, “the godfather of South Florida theatre” and the producing artistic director of GableStage from 1988 - 2020. Bari is known for her creative methods of centering a theatre company in a community. Whether it’s giving out hundreds of potted plants on Earth Day or designating Thursdays as Give a Dog a Bone Days, Bari’s belief that a theatre company is a citizen in a community rather than simply a place where plays are produced, has been the bellwether of her career. Bari came to Miami from the Penobscot Theatre Company in Bangor, Maine, where she served as Producing Artistic Director for nine and a half seasons. Previously, she was artistic associate at the Tony Award winning Alliance Theatre in Atlanta, artistic/literary manager at the Pasadena Playhouse, associate producer at Atlanta’s Horizon Theatre and associate director of Florida Repertory Theatre. As a producer, Newport has been responsible for the creation and stabilization of a wide range of artistic initiatives, including extensive work in new play development, education and community engagement. Her work as a director and actor has been seen at Horizon Theatre Company, Greenbrier Valley Theatre, American Stage, Cumberland County Playhouse, Florida Repertory Theatre, Sacramento Theatre Company, Westport Country Playhouse and the Williamstown Theatre Festival. At GableStage, Bari has directed The Price,The Year of Magical Thinking, Heisenberg,We Will Not Be Silent and A Doll’s House, Part 2. She earned her BFA from the University of Southern California and her MFA from the University of Iowa. Bari is a

IN-KIND SUPPORT WISH LIST

There are many ways to support our theatre: you can donate anything from rehearsal/warehouse space to flowers and plants. Donations are tax deductible!

Vehicles

VAN: In addition to being able to bring our work to more locations within our community, having our own van will allow us to transport sets, props and costume pieces from storage to the theatre in no time.

CARS: Out-of-town artists need to be able to get around. At the very least, they need to travel from artist housing to the theatre and the grocery store. Having vehicles of our own would eliminate the need to rent a fleet of cars. Help!

Housing

Have a guest house, vacation house or Airbnb? Housing with kitchens are needed for out-of-town artists staying two weeks or more.

Rehearsal Space

Have a large rec room? We need a mid-size space – 800 sq. ft. or more – to rehearse a play while another production is performing at the theatre.

Warehouse Space

Our theatre is intimate. Outside and inside. Extra warehouse space will help us store furniture, props and other materials used in the productions.

Airline Miles

Help bring out-of-town artists and playwrights to the productions.

Food & Hospitality Gift Cards

Support our artists! Meals are appreciated.

Flowers & Plants

Help beautify the entrance to GableStage! Plants and flowers in planters are welcome! Ready to donate?
