In this sparkling comedy of good intentions and bad manners, cultures and gardens clash, turning well-intentioned neighbors into feuding enemies. Pablo, a rising attorney, and doctoral candidate Tania, his very pregnant wife, have just purchased a home next to Frank and Virginia, a well-established D.C. couple with a prize-worthy English garden. But an impending barbeque for Pablo’s colleagues and a delicate disagreement over a long-standing fence line soon spiral into an all-out border dispute, exposing both couples’ notions of race, taste, class and privilege.

“But then the revolution came And we revolved and revolved Category 5 winds of change”
--Valeria, in El Huracán by Charise Castro Smith
El Huracán’s swirling themes…the fading nature of memory, the illusions of time, life’s real magic and cruel tricks, the imprint our ancestors leave on us, the stories we must carry for them…are as universal as Shakespeare’s. But…there’s something uniquely magical about sharing this play with you today. Where else but South Florida, so transformed in less than a lifetime by that tempestuous Revolution, could El Huracán resonate for audiences with such shared understanding and specificity? Where else could lines referring to epic local events like “Andrew,” or the prosaic day-to-day details of “Carports” and “Dadeland Mall,” spoken in that particular form of Miami “Spanglish,” feel so effortlessly real to so many in a theatre? Even as its magical-theatrical tricks tell us we’re someplace else— 1958 Havana, 1992 Miami, 2017 Miami, and decades in between—the characters of El Huracán co-exist with us like vivid memories in this moment, in this theatre. My grandparents and great-grandparents have been on my mind throughout the process of creating this Miami-made production. Theirs is a Cuban American story not unlike the family on stage today. They’re no longer with us. But…perhaps they’re present, too? Conjured when I remember and share the stories passed on to me? Now, that’s magic. Whose stories do you carry? Bienvenidos…

El Huracán has been unlike any other play I have worked on before, it gave me the opportunity to take a journey through my own personal history in the name of dramaturgical research. Surprisingly to me, one of the fundamental sources for El Huracán research was my own Cuban dad: Vinicio. Through him and his stories, I learned about the triumphs and struggles of my own family. I discovered aspects of my father that I would have otherwise lost forever had I not inquired about his past experiences as a Cuban exile. We had some of the deepest conversations we’ve ever had and I saw, for the first time, the pain my father carried and tried so hard to mask all these years.
We talked about tempests, Cuba, Alzheimer’s (we too lost my grandfather to this disease), my own abuela, the infinite line at the Freedom Tower in March 1961, and learning English at Coral Gables Senior High School. We talked about the fallout after Hurricane Andrew: broken tree limbs fused with tears of joy for having simply survived. We talked about the perpetual longing for home to the shattered dreams of the, now, impossible homecoming. We talked about the rupture from ‘la isla’ and rebuilding the idea of home. My research functioned much like a hurricaneuprooting and displacing, while also revealing the fertile soil for something new to spring forth that was both connected to the past yet untethered brimming with possibilities for the future. Suddenly, El Huracán became more than a play for me and was transformed into a reflection of my own family and our transplanted lives. Like a hurricane, it was a catalyst for my family to rebuild, heal, learn, and forgive. I hope it acts as an invitation for you to do the same.

Impacting Students’ Lives
With a mission of confronting today’s issues and ideas, GableStage has played an important role in Miami’s professional theatre ecology since 1979. Starting as the Florida Shakespeare Theatre and reinventing itself in 1998 as GableStage, the company has been at the forefront of producing provocative theatre. The company’s intimate, edgy, and inspiring work has been seen by over 400,000 patrons and 250,000 students.
For decades, thousands of Miami-Dade high school students were exposed to dynamic, contemporary storytelling through GableStage’s much–lauded student matinee series. Now, after a long hiatus, GableStage, under the leadership of new producing artistic director, Bari Newport and with generous funding from the Green Family Foundation, proudly reinstates this impactful offering.
The company’s flagship in-school offering, Shakespeare-in-the-Schools, visits 20+ Miami-Dade public and private high schools each year. Using a company of emerging theatre artists, GableStage harkins back to its roots as a Shakespeare company, by performing a 50-minute adaptation of Shakespeare’s most popular classics. Each production is re-imagined in a contemporary context.
A number of dramaturgical opportunities for adult theatre goers to expand their understanding of professional theatre production are now being offered on-line and at the theatre. These efforts highlight Newport’s personal desire to inspire a life-long passion for the theatrical art form in all members of the community.

EDUCATION & OUTREACH PROGRAMS
Shakespeare-in-the-Schools
For nearly a decade, GableStage has sent contemporary adaptations of Shakespeare's most classic plays to Miami-Dade public schools through the Shakespeare-in-the-Schools program. This year, the production of Twelfth Night was performed through the lens of the Haitian migration to Miami, 22 times in 19 schools spanning from Homestead to North Miami beach.
Mainstage Student Matinees
Mainstage student matinees introduce high school students to professional, high-quality theatre productions which confront today’s issues and ideas. Exposure to professional theatre nurtures compassion, self awareness, tolerance, and provides essential tools for students to become strong, influential leaders of the future.
El Huracán: Friday, April 21 and Friday April 28 at 10:30 am
Ignite
Ignite the ambitions of the next generation of theatre artists. Led by actor, Iain Batchelor and with support from the Pérez Family Foundation, 22/23 marks the pilot year of this powerful new initiative. In addition to receiving tickets to all five productions, a nominated partner high-school – with serious theatre students – will have season-long access to GableStage artists and company members. GableStage is proud to announce our 2022-23 Partner school, Coral Reef High School

IN-KIND SUPPORT WISH LIST
There are many ways to support our theatre: you can donate anything from rehearsal/warehouse space to flowers and plants. Donations are tax deductible!
Vehicles
VAN: In addition to being able to bring our work to more locations within our community, having our own van will allow us to transport sets, props and costume pieces from storage to the theatre in no time.
CARS: Out-of-town artists need to be able to get around. At the very least, they need to travel from artist housing to the theatre and the grocery store. Having vehicles of our own would eliminate the need to rent a fleet of cars. Help!
Housing
Have a guest house, vacation house or Airbnb? Housing with kitchens are needed for out-of-town artists staying two weeks or more.
Rehearsal Space
Have a large rec room? We need a mid-size space – 800 sq. ft. or more – to rehearse a play while another production is performing at the theatre.
Warehouse Space
Our theatre is intimate. Outside and inside. Extra warehouse space will help us store furniture, props and other materials used in the productions.
Airline Miles
Help bring out-of-town artists and playwrights to the productions.
Food & Hospitality Gift Cards
Support our artists! Meals are appreciated.
Flowers & Plants
Help beautify the entrance to GableStage! Plants and flowers in planters are welcome! Ready to donate?

OUT OF MANY. ONE.
Atthis moment in our history, using our voices and telling our stories couldn’t be more important to creating cultural understanding amongst all people.
Places like GableStage and creators like Charise Castro Smith bring us together in a way that changes us for the better. The theater unites us as a community, even if it’s only for one night.
As a producer, activist, and philanthropist, my commitment to our country is to seek out new, diverse voices and to create opportunities for them to express their talents and make their voices heard.
Because that is what the American Dream is all about.
It is an honor to be a part of the world premiere
