Shalom Y’all! Southern Jews and the Cotton Economy

Sponsored by: Susan & Steven Caller

March 26, 7.30 pm

with Dr. Josh Parshall

Director of history at the Institute of Southern Jewish Life

While Part One of The Lehman Trilogy tracks the rise of an exceptionally successful Jewish business family from their arrival in Montgomery, Alabama, through their relocation to New York City, thousands of other southern Jewish stories mirror aspects of the Lehmans’ experiences. This talk combines the history of cotton production in the U.S. South with southern Jewish histories to explore how Jewish migrants found their way to emerging market hubs, became active in various aspects of cotton production and processing, and (in many cases) came to occupy prominent positions in social and civic life. Along the way, we will consider how this history illuminates Jewish relationships to race and racism in the United States, and we will observe how changes in cotton production (and fluctuations in its profitability) have shaped and reshaped Jewish communities in much of the rural South.

Dr. Josh Parshall is the director of history at the Goldring/ Woldenberg Institute of Southern Jewish Life (ISJL), where he edits the online Encyclopedia of Southern Jewish Communities, delivers public lectures, co-manages internships in public history, and conducts original research. He holds a Ph.D. from the Department of American Studies at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, and his academic interests include Jewish American culture and politics, Yiddish language and culture, and southern studies. Dr. Parshall is also the current President of the Southern Jewish Historical Society.

History of GableStage

Founded in 1979 as Florida Shakespeare Theatre, GableStage originally performed the plays of Shakespeare in repertory, using the outdoor Casino Gardens at Vizcaya. From 1987 to 1992, Florida Shakespeare Theatre was housed in the Minorca Playhouse in Coral Gables, until it was destroyed by Hurricane Andrew. But the theatre’s mission could not be destroyed, and it continued to produce at the Carousel Theatre in Coral Gables in 1993 and 1994. In 1998, the theatre moved to its current home, the historic Biltmore Hotel, and became GableStage.

Since 1998, GableStage has been producing quality theatrical productions that encompass themes and ideas relevant to the multicultural South Florida community at Coral Gables’ historic Biltmore Hotel. GableStage is the recipient of 64 Carbonell Awards, a prestigious South Florida theatre award, with over 200 nominations and received the Ruth Forman Award for major advancements in the South Florida theatre scene.

GableStage is one of the longest-running and most highly acclaimed theater companies in South Florida striving to present the most vital and cutting edge works of contemporary playwrights worldwide (currently over 100 successful productions). Currently, six plays are mounted annually at the Biltmore Hotel location, and productions are regularly transported to area performing arts venues such as the Lyric Theatre, the Joseph Caleb Auditorium, and The Seminole Theatre in order to engage a larger audience and outreach to the community. In addition to community outreach, GableStage works directly with the Miami-Dade Public Schools’ Cultural Passport Program to provide unique cultural access to schools, students, and teachers through school tours and/or attendance at a GableStage production at an offsite venue. Study guides are provided prior to the performances to provide in-depth knowledge for students. Following the performance, a talkback is administered to engage the students and teachers in a conversation about what they experienced. All programs are offered free-of-charge.

GableStage has been approved to become the theatre-in-residence at the Coconut Grove Playhouse in conjunction with Miami-Dade County and Florida International University. After a public presentation at Ransom Everglades in December 2016, we are in the design stages with Miami-Dade County, AMS Consulting, Fisher-Dachs, Arquitectonica, and FIU. For official notices on the project, check the Miami-Dade County Department of Cultural Affairs website.

GableStage is proud to be a member of the thriving South Florida theatre and business community. We are members of Theatre Communications Group, Theatre League of South Florida, Americans for the Arts, Coconut Grove Chamber of Commerce, Coral Gables Chamber of Commerce, and the Miami-Dade Gay & Lesbian Chamber Commerce.

Mission Statement

The mission of GableStage is to provide South Florida audiences with theatrical works of artistic excellence that confront today’s issues and ideas.

A NOTE FROM THE DIRECTOR

Ahead of our public announcement, it is my pleasure to introduce you to our 26th Season: a carefully curated selection of plays that promise to delight, inspire and stimulate.

Before we venture into the new season, allow me a moment to highlight the final production of our 25th Season: Laughs in Spanish (May 17 - June 9), by Miami born and bred Alexis Scheer, who recently made her Broadway debut as the book writer for Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Bad Cinderella. Anticipation is high for this premiere. If you haven't yet secured your seats, please reach out so you don’t miss a beat!

Our 26th Season unfolds with an array of regional and Miami premieres which amplify our legacy of producing theatre which is both unique and adventurous:

King James – Developed at Steppenwolf where playwright Rajiv Joseph is a company member, this Miami premiere is set to the career of basketball legend LeBron James and explores how fandom can create lifelong relationships.

Both Sides Now – Two actor musicians, a baby grand and a five string guitar bring Joni Mitchell and Leonard Cohen complex relationship to life as told through personal stories and more than a dozen legendary songs.

Appropriate – Currently one of Broadway’s hottest shows, this darkly comedic drama by Branden Jacobs-Jenkins, supercharges the trope of dysfunctional family reunion… gone wrong.

Summer 1976 – This gorgeous new play by Pulitzer Prize winner David Auburn (Proof) offers two extraordinary actresses a meal to really sink their teeth into. This deeply moving, insightful piece is about connection, memories, and the small moments that can change the course of our lives.

Fat Ham – Hamlet has never tasted so good. Critically-acclaimed playwright James Ijames reinvents Shakespeare’s masterpiece with this 2022 Pulitzer Prize winning uproarious drama. Radiohead, anyone?

ABOUT THE DIRECTOR

Bari Newport** (Director) joined GableStage as producing artistic director in June 2021. Bari’s tenure follows the legendary leadership of Joseph Adler, “the godfather of South Florida theatre” and the producing artistic director of GableStage from 1988 - 2020. Bari is known for her creative methods of centering a theatre company in a community. Whether it’s giving out hundreds of potted plants on Earth Day or designating Thursdays as Give a Dog a Bone Days, Bari’s belief that a theatre company is a citizen in a community rather than simply a place where plays are produced, has been the bellwether of her career. Bari came to Miami from the Penobscot Theatre Company in Bangor, Maine, where she served as Producing Artistic Director for nine and a half seasons. Previously, she was artistic associate at the Tony Award winning Alliance Theatre in Atlanta, artistic/literary manager at the Pasadena Playhouse, associate producer at Atlanta’s Horizon Theatre and associate director of Florida Repertory Theatre. As a producer, Newport has been responsible for the creation and stabilization of a wide range of artistic initiatives, including extensive work in new play development, education and community engagement. Her work as a director and actor has been seen at Horizon Theatre Company, Greenbrier Valley Theatre, American Stage, Cumberland County Playhouse, Florida Repertory Theatre, Sacramento Theatre Company, Westport Country Playhouse and the Williamstown Theatre Festival. At GableStage, Bari has directed The Price, The Year of Magical Thinking, Heisenberg, We Will Not Be Silent, A Doll’s House, Pt. 2. and The Thanksgiving Play. She earned her BFA from the University of Southern California and her MFA from the University of Iowa. Bari is a 25 year member of the Stage Directors and Choreographers Society and the Actor's Equity Association. Email her at bnewport@gablestage.org. Photo © Magnus Stark, 2024

A NOTE FROM THE DIRECTOR

They came with nothing without a word of English and they built an entire universe.

- The Lehman Trilogy, Act 3

When my husband and I flew to London a year ago to see the revered Sam Mendes production of The Lehman Trilogy, I was ready to be gobsmacked by the muchlauded “spinning cube” – but I wasn’t prepared to witness a Southern Jewish story which mirrored my own.

My family, like the Lehmans and like 150,000 other German-speaking Jews, came to America between 1820-1880, a period generally considered to be the era of German Jewish immigration.

They came because they had to. In Bavaria and other Germanic regions, quotas on the number of Jews in a community meant marriage became an increasingly remote option. In the case of the Lehman family: the oldest brother was allowed to marry and inherit their father’s cattle and wine business, the sisters married Jewish men in other towns and the remaining three brothers, who you meet in this story: leave for America.

My great-great grandfather, Jacob Hummelstein arrived in 1887. He entered the country through Baltimore. Following the train tracks with a cart on foot, Jacob peddled rags, animal hides and fur from West Virginia to Kentucky, Kentucky to Tennessee, Tennessee to Missouri, Missouri to Arkansas.

In 1907, Jacob settled in Jonesboro, Arkansas and founded Jonesboro Hide & Fur – a company which grew to be one of the largest iron and metal recyclers in the south – before being bought by a large corporation in 2019 – 102 years later.

To me this play is a fable about the American Dream. It uses metaphor (the theatre’s strongest language) to convey a moral. The moral has to do with assimilation – with a gradual loss of connection.

It is also a story of Creation. That humans can create something out of nothing – whether it be a business which spans generations or a production that goes from a vision to the concrete, is nothing if not Divine.

The idea of etching something out of nothing was the driving vision of this production with this woodblock providing initial inspiration:

The set design by Frank Oliva provides both a realized embodiment of this vision with a practical landscape for Jamie Godwin’s projection design. Frank and I spent an incredible number of hours conceiving

A NOTE FROM THE DIRECTOR

this design in a way that works for our intimate GableStage space and resources and even more time storyboarding each moment of the play.

Final Storyboards:

23

A NOTE FROM THE DIRECTOR

Four crew members make all of the choreographed moves of the set happen.

The few stage directions that exist in the script are often about things being “revealed” – and in keeping with the vision of creating something from nothing, I wanted a dark world, where magic could happen.

As it is much easier to project on light surfaces, than dark surfaces, the material which makes up the panels on stage are a special projection material, made expressly to take light.

We use five projectors in this production. The three in the back are our own 7k projectors. Because our space is so shallow, using them as back projectors requires three short-throw lenses (which, thanks to the Knight technology grant, we were able to purchase). The two projectors in front are 12k projectors, which we rented for this production.

24

A NOTE FROM THE DIRECTOR

Lighting plays a huge role in this storytelling, too. Tony Galaska, one of my favorite collaborators uses 81 conventional fixtures, 5 moving lights, 4 mirror I-cues, 4 LED strip lights and 8 LED fixtures to create over 400 lighting cues.

Sound designer Sean McGinley painstakingly pieced together a score which underscores nearly all of the production. “The magical musicbox that was America” – a line spoken by Henry early in Act 1, was the inspiration for the music choices –and effects (like the ring of a bell on a shop door) “that sound like memories” was the approach for the rest of the design.

The projection, lighting and sound cues, in addition to the moves of the set are all orchestrated live by Miami born and made but New York based Amy Rauchwerger, who is stage managing this production. Assistant Stage Manager Emily Chavez, in collaboration with Amy, is in charge of the backstage operations including the tracking of all props – real and imagined!

A special note on the staging: this production would not be as remarkable (or fun) without the contributions of Associate Director Jeni Hacker. Her joyful and endlessly creative problem solving add shape and dimension to nearly every aspect of the storytelling.

The number of people who have contributed to this production are too many to list. We have had dialect coaches, rabbis, Hebrew teachers, bankruptcy attorneys and Southern Jewish historians join us on this ambitious journey – but nothing would be possible without the support of the numerous sponsors, led by Jesse Wolfson and Larry Kron who came on board early, to realize this production.

Actors Mark H. Dold, Brandon Morris and James Zannelli are magicians. Watch as they transform before your very eyes. They make this high-wire act look easy.

Enjoy!

IN-KIND SUPPORT WISH LIST

There are many ways to support our theatre: you can donate anything from rehearsal/warehouse space to flowers and plants. Donations are tax deductible!

Vehicles

VAN: In addition to being able to bring our work to more locations within our community, having our own van will allow us to transport sets, props and costume pieces from storage to the theatre in no time.

CARS: Out-of-town artists need to be able to get around. At the very least, they need to travel from artist housing to the theatre and the grocery store. Having vehicles of our own would eliminate the need to rent a fleet of cars. Help!

Housing

Have a guest house, vacation house or Airbnb? Housing with kitchens are needed for out-of-town artists staying two weeks or more.

Rehearsal Space

Have a large rec room? We need a mid-size space – 800 sq. ft. or more – to rehearse a play while another production is performing at the theatre.

Warehouse Space

Our theatre is intimate. Outside and inside. Extra warehouse space will help us store furniture, props and other materials used in the productions.

Airline Miles

Help bring out-of-town artists and playwrights to the productions.

Food & Hospitality Gift Cards

Support our artists! Meals are appreciated.

Flowers & Plants

Help beautify the entrance to GableStage! Plants and flowers in planters are welcome!

Ready to donate?

Sponsorship not only enables the company to stage captivating performances, but also ensures accessibility to diverse audiences. It is through their invaluable contributions that GableStage can continue to inspire, challenge, and entertain audiences for years to come. We are so grateful for each of the sponsors that have made The Lehman Trilogy possible.
