History of GableStage Founded in 1979 as Florida Shakespeare Theatre, GableStage originally performed the plays of Shakespeare in repertory, using the outdoor Casino Gardens at Vizcaya. From 1987 to 1992, Florida Shakespeare Theatre was housed in the Minorca Playhouse in Coral Gables, until it was destroyed by Hurricane Andrew. But the theatre’s mission could not be destroyed, and it continued to produce at the Carousel Theatre in Coral Gables in 1993 and 1994. In 1998, the theatre moved to its current home, the historic Biltmore Hotel, and became GableStage. Since 1998, GableStage has been producing quality theatrical productions that encompass themes and ideas relevant to the multicultural South Florida community at Coral Gables’ historic Biltmore Hotel. GableStage is the recipient of 64 Carbonell Awards, a prestigious South Florida theatre award, with over 200 nominations and received the Ruth Forman Award for major advancements in the South Florida theatre scene. GableStage is one of the longest-running and most highly acclaimed theater companies in South Florida striving to present the most vital and cutting edge works of contemporary playwrights worldwide (currently over 100 successful productions). Currently, six plays are mounted annually at the Biltmore Hotel location, and productions are regularly transported to area performing arts venues such as the Lyric Theatre, the Joseph Caleb Auditorium, and The Seminole Theatre in order to engage a larger audience and outreach to the community. In addition to community outreach, GableStage works directly with the Miami-Dade Public Schools’ Cultural Passport Program to provide unique cultural access to schools, students, and teachers through school tours and/or attendance at a GableStage production at an offsite venue. Study guides are provided prior to the performances to provide in-depth knowledge for students. Following the performance, a talkback is administered to engage the students and teachers in a conversation about what they experienced. All programs are offered free-of-charge. GableStage has been approved to become the theatre-in-residence at the Coconut Grove Playhouse in conjunction with Miami-Dade County and Florida International University. After a public presentation at Ransom Everglades in December 2016, we are in the design stages with Miami-Dade County, AMS Consulting, Fisher-Dachs, Arquitectonica, and FIU. For official notices on the project, check the Miami-Dade County Department of Cultural Affairs website. GableStage is proud to be a member of the thriving South Florida theatre and business community. We are members of Theatre Communications Group, Theatre League of South Florida, Americans for the Arts, Coconut Grove Chamber of Commerce, Coral Gables Chamber of Commerce, and the Miami-Dade Gay & Lesbian Chamber Commerce. Mission Statement The mission of GableStage is to provide South Florida audiences with theatrical works of artistic excellence that confront today’s issues and ideas. 10

DRAMATURG'S NOTE

The Thanksgiving Play by Larissa FastHorse is a satirical exploration (Fasthorse calls it a "a comedy, within a satire") with a particular focus on Native American erasure, the mythos of the Thanksgiving holiday, and the urgent need for increased visibility and change in the realm of American theater as it relates to Native American creatives and storytelling. By peeling back the layers of the Thanksgiving holiday, Fasthorse reveals an apocryphal mythology built on selective historical narratives that often disregard the complex, challenging, and painful realities of Native American and European interactions. The play humorously deconstructs the sanitized version of Thanksgiving that is often presented in schools and the media. In doing so, the play invites audiences to question the narratives that have been woven into the fabric of this holiday and to engage with its true history. It's an opportunity for collective understanding, reconciliation, and allyship in support of Native communities. It was imperative to me during my dramaturgical research to seek out the often siloed and silenced stories and voices of Native American writers. I'd like to share some of those resources with you in the hopes of building a more complete and accurate understanding of Native American histories, cultures and contemporary lives.* *Native Knowledge 360: https://americanindian.si.edu/nk360 The Rediscovery of America: Native Peoples and the Unmaking of U.S. History by Ned Blackhawk Our Beloved Kin by Lisa Brooks The Heartbeat of Wounded Knee by David Treur Everything You Wanted to Know About Indians But Were Afraid to Ask by Anton Treuer There There by Tommy Orange The Night Watchman by Louise Erdrich An American Sunrise by Joy Harjo Karina Batchelor | Resident Dramaturg

She developed plays with Kansas City Rep, Artist’s Rep in Portland, Arizona Theater Company, the Center Theatre Group Writer’s Workshop and Berkeley Rep’s Ground Floor. Please include this in playbill: ...please be loud in our show. I saw some wild performances where there was lots of audience interaction with my characters and our actors had a ball. My number one rule in theater is “be a human” and that means all humans. The ones who need to go to the bathroom, the ones who laugh loudly, the ones who have life complications and get there late, the ones who unexpectedly need a cough drop, the ones who need a nap, and especially the ones who are so moved by the work that they need to respond immediately in ways that are meaningful to them. Be you. - Larissa Fasthorse

ABOUT THE DIRECTOR Bari Newport (Director) joined GableStage as producing artistic director in June 2021. Bari’s tenure follows the legendary leadership of Joseph Adler, “the godfather of South Florida theatre” and the producing artistic director of GableStage from 1988 - 2020. Bari is known for her creative methods of centering a theatre company in a community. Whether it’s giving out hundreds of potted plants on Earth Day or designating Thursdays as Give a Dog a Bone Days, Bari’s belief that a theatre company is a citizen in a community rather than simply a place where plays are produced, has been the bellwether of her career. Bari came to Miami from the Penobscot Theatre Company in Bangor, Maine, where she served as Producing Artistic Director for nine and a half seasons. Previously, she was artistic associate at the Tony Award winning Alliance Theatre in Atlanta, artistic/literary manager at the Pasadena Playhouse, associate producer at Atlanta’s Horizon Theatre and associate director of Florida Repertory Theatre. As a producer, Newport has been responsible for the creation and stabilization of a wide range of artistic initiatives, including extensive work in new play development, education and community engagement. Her work as a director and actor has been seen at Horizon Theatre Company, Greenbrier Valley Theatre, American Stage, Cumberland County Playhouse, Florida Repertory Theatre, Sacramento Theatre Company, Westport Country Playhouse and the Williamstown Theatre Festival. At GableStage, Bari has directed The Price,The Year of Magical Thinking, Heisenberg,We Will Not Be Silent and A Doll’s House, Pt. 2. She earned her BFA from the University of Southern California and her MFA from the University of Iowa. Bari is a 25 year member of the Stage Directors and Choreographers Society and the Actor's Equity Association. Email her at bnewport@gablestage.org. 14

Special thanks to Bari Newport for the opportunity to return to GableStage, and to the late, great Joseph Adler for decades of friendship and incredible theater experiences. Following a year of pandemic-induced uncertainty, she shifted to a tech career as a Technical Program Manager at Quantum Metric. It is just as thrilling as it sounds. IN-KIND SUPPORT WISH LIST There are many ways to support our theatre: you can donate anything from rehearsal/warehouse space to flowers and plants. Donations are tax deductible! Vehicles VAN: In addition to being able to bring our work to more locations within our community, having our own van will allow us to transport sets, props and costume pieces from storage to the theatre in no time. CARS: Out-of-town artists need to be able to get around. At the very least, they need to travel from artist housing to the theatre and the grocery store. Having vehicles of our own would eliminate the need to rent a fleet of cars. Help! Housing Have a guest house, vacation house or Airbnb? Housing with kitchens are needed for out-of-town artists staying two weeks or more. Rehearsal Space Have a large rec room? We need a mid-size space – 800 sq. ft. or more – to rehearse a play while another production is performing at the theatre. Warehouse Space Our theatre is intimate. Outside and inside. Extra warehouse space will help us store furniture, props and other materials used in the productions. Airline Miles Help bring out-of-town artists and playwrights to the productions. Food & Hospitality Gift Cards Support our artists! Meals are appreciated. Flowers & Plants Help beautify the entrance to GableStage! Plants and flowers in planters are welcome!
