OUT OF MANY. ONE.
Atthis moment in our history, using our voices and telling our stories couldn’t be more important to creating cultural understanding amongst all people.
Places like GableStage and creators like Charise Castro Smith bring us together in a way that changes us for the better. The theater unites us as a community, even if it’s only for one night.
As a producer, activist, and philanthropist, my commitment to our country is to seek out new, diverse voices and to create opportunities for them to express their talents and make their voices heard.
Because that is what the American Dream is all about.
It is an honor to be a part of the world premiere

In 1879, when Henrik Ibsen wrote A Doll’s House, a woman could not divorce her husband unless he had committed adultery, was impotent, or had deserted his wife and children. The Norwegian feminist movement fought hard to change these rules and towards the tail end of the 19th century divorce laws were modernized to include more rights for women. Since then, women across the world continue to bravely fight for rights that have been afforded to most men. Here’s a timeline exploring those hard won rights and how recently some of them have become law in the US.
1937: Women are allowed to use their maiden names on their passports. Before 1937, married couples would use a joint passport where the women would be referred to as “wife of” or “accompanied by his wife.”
1960: The US’s first no-fault divorce bill is passed allowing couples to end their marriages on the grounds of irreconcilable differences. Before that, a spouse would have to show proof of adultery, abuse, or abandonment and women would receive most of the blame for breaking apart their families.
1963: The Equal Pay Act was signed into law, mandating that men and women receive the same pay for the same work. Yet, according to 2021 data from the Published Census Bureau data women earned about $.82 for every dollar men earned. Latina or Hispanic women earned about $.58 and Black women earned about $.63 for every dollar men earned.
1968: Women are allowed the right to serve on a jury in all 50 states.
1973: Roe v. Wade is passed into law, guaranteeing women the right to an abortion. In 2022, Roe v. Wade was overturned.
1974: The Equal Credit Opportunity Act was signed into law which granted women the right to obtain credit cards separate from their husbands.
1975: Public Law 94-106 is signed into law admitting women to the all-male U.S. Military, Naval and Air Force Academies for the first time.
1978: The Pregnancy Discrimination Act of 1978 is passed into law. Before 1978, a woman could be fired for simply being pregnant.
1988: The Women’s Business Ownership Act is passed. This law gave women equal access to capital to start their own business and no longer required them to have their husbands or male relatives consign for business loans.
1993: Marital rape is criminalized in all 50 states. Unfortunately, several states have repealed these laws, either partially or fully.
2013: The “ground combat exclusion policy” is overturned. Women are allowed to serve in direct combat.
