I’m going to say it: I love the American Dream! - I truly do.

It’s what led my father to flee his country and cross the ocean to the U.S. It’s what has led me to follow my dreams of living my life being an artist. It is why we are all convening in the theatre today. The American Dream comes with the promise of security, prosperity, luxury even and a fence. There’s always a fence. As is quoted in the play, “Good fences make good neighbors”.

The positive aspect of a fence: a nice healthy boundary with clear demarcation. A visual contract. The not-so-positive aspect of a fence: the automatic assignment of Us vs. Them; and that Us vs. Them business can be so visceral. We are so quick to make enemies of one another.

Now, if you are sitting there thinking “ I never make an enemy out of anyone”… I hate to break it to you, but yes. Yes, you have. I have found in my years of directing and just plain living life that we have this insatiable need to blame someone for the uncomfortable situations in our lives (even if that someone is ourselves).

You will see that the play makes references to our political climate. References to walls, The Man, discrimination, and more. As an audience member, you have a choice (you always have a choice): Option A:You can take in the play at face value and play the blame game along with the characters or Option B: Apply zero blame and see what happens. Either choice, it’ll be a good time.

Thank you for choosing to spend your time with us today. Whether it’s your first time or your 100th time at the theatre, thank you. I hope you enjoy this little “American Dream” we have built for you.

DIRECTOR’S NOTE

Fear is the highest fence. - Dudley Nichols

It all begins with a fence and what it means to four people. Is a fence meant to keep out, protect, or mark boundaries? Is it good or bad? Does it hinder or help? And who gets to decide where to mark the land?

Fences, both physical and metaphorical, serve as powerful symbols in Native Gardens. They are the literal cause of the border dispute between the Del Valles and the Butleys; they represent the cultural and generational divide between the younger Latinx couple and the older white couple next door; it’s also a metaphor for the internal divide Tania and Pablo Del Valle feel as they attempt to negotiate competing identities between their heritage and the dominant culture. To take this further, there’s also the sociopolitical context in which the play exists: the current national border crisis caused by “The Wall” where illegal border crossings have soared to alltime highs and which bring into question debates about who or what is considered invasive or alien to an environment. (“Under the Immigration and Nationality Act of the United States, "[t]he term 'alien' means any person not a citizen or national of the United States.")

Despite all of these highly politicized and, at times, divisive issues Karen Zacarías’ play sheds light on the shared humanity and interconnectedness that can transcend differences. It challenges us to examine our own biases and preconceptions, and, hopefully, promotes a more inclusive and empathetic understanding of issues like cultural and national identity, neighborliness, fear of the unknown, and the toxic nature of divisions.

El miedo es la valla más alta. - Dudley Nichols

Previously, she was artistic associate at the Tony Award winning Alliance Theatre in Atlanta, artistic/literary manager at the Pasadena Playhouse, associate producer at Atlanta’s Horizon Theatre and associate director of Florida Repertory Theatre. Impacting Lives

Under the leadership of Producing Artistic Director Bari Newport, GableStage has strived to strengthen appreciation for the role theatre plays in the community by prioritizing the development of its educational initiatives.

In the 2022-2023 Season, GableStage expanded, designed and reimagined its educational programming. Over 5,000 Miami-Dade students and hundreds of adult learners were served by the opportunities made possible by our generous sponsors.

With a mission of confronting today’s issues and ideas, GableStage plays an important role in inspiring optimism and imaginative problem solving to our community.

GableStage will broaden its outreach in 2023-2024. Audiences of all ages can look forward to increased opportunities to Engage with the Stage at the theatre, at their school, on-line and at community centers near and far.

Pre-Show Talks

Starting 30-min before every performance, audience members are invited to deep-dive into the production at hand by joining member of artistic team in the "cafe" in front of the theatre.

Post-Show Chat-Backs

Immediately following the first Sunday matinee, please stay for a robust conversation with cast and artistic team.

EDUCATION & OUTREACH PROGRAMS
Miami Dade students arrive for a matinee, 2023

Shakespeare-in-the-Schools

For nearly a decade, GableStage has sent contemporary adaptations of Shakespeare's most classic plays to Miami-Dade public schools through the Shakespeare-in-the-Schools program. This season, the production of Twelfth Night was performed through the lens of the Haitian migration to Miami, 22 times in 19 schools spanning from Homestead to North Miami Beach. Macbeth will be performed in 2023-2024.

Mainstage Student Matinees

These special, morning performances introduce high school students to professional, high-quality theatre productions. In 2022-2023, over 1000 students and teachers registered within the first 24 hours of the matinees being posted. GableStage proudly welcomed over 500 students into the theatre to witness the productions of We Will Not Be Silent and El Huracan. Student matinees for 2023-2024 will be offered for How I Learned What I Learned, The Thanksgiving Play, Old Wicked Songs and Laughs in Spanish.

Ignite

Ignite the ambitions of the next generation of theatre artists with this powerful, new initiative. In addition to receiving tickets to all five productions, nominated partner high-schools with serious theatre students, read and study all productions and recieve season-long access to GableStage artists and company members. GableStage was proud to have Coral Reef High School as our 2022-23 partner school. We hope to invite two schools to partner with in the upcoming season.

Diary of a Production

From script analysis to casting, designing and directing, this class took 15 adult learners deep into the artistic process of bringing a production to life. The 2022-2023 Season offered A Doll's House, Pt. 2 as the Diary. We look forward to offering Diaries for The Thanksgiving Play and The Lehman Trilogy in 2023-2024.

IN-KIND SUPPORT WISH LIST

There are many ways to support our theatre: you can donate anything from rehearsal/warehouse space to flowers and plants. Donations are tax deductible!

Vehicles

VAN: In addition to being able to bring our work to more locations within our community, having our own van will allow us to transport sets, props and costume pieces from storage to the theatre in no time.

CARS: Out-of-town artists need to be able to get around. At the very least, they need to travel from artist housing to the theatre and the grocery store. Having vehicles of our own would eliminate the need to rent a fleet of cars. Help!

Housing

Have a guest house, vacation house or Airbnb? Housing with kitchens are needed for out-of-town artists staying two weeks or more.

Rehearsal Space

Have a large rec room? We need a mid-size space – 800 sq. ft. or more – to rehearse a play while another production is performing at the theatre.

Warehouse Space

Our theatre is intimate. Outside and inside. Extra warehouse space will help us store furniture, props and other materials used in the productions.

Airline Miles

Help bring out-of-town artists and playwrights to the productions.

Food & Hospitality Gift Cards

Support our artists! Meals are appreciated.

Flowers & Plants

Help beautify the entrance to GableStage! Plants and flowers in planters are welcome! Ready to donate?

Native Gardens

Non-Profit Production Partner

GableStage is proud to announce its non-profit partnership for the production of Native Gardens.

Dedicated to educating our members, our youth, and the public in gardening, horticulture, environmental issues, community beautification, and the art of floral design.

GableStage continues its partnerships with area nonprofits through “Non-Profit Nights” for each production. Organizations have the opportunity to utilize the production's final dress rehearsal as a fundraising event for their non-profit.

To become a non-profit partner for the 2023-24 season, please contact Tyla Palmer at tpalmer@gablestage.org

OUT OF MANY. ONE.

Atthis moment in our history, using our voices and telling our stories couldn’t be more important to creating cultural understanding amongst all people.

Places like GableStage and creators like Charise Castro Smith bring us together in a way that changes us for the better. The theater unites us as a community, even if it’s only for one night.

As a producer, activist, and philanthropist, my commitment to our country is to seek out new, diverse voices and to create opportunities for them to express their talents and make their voices heard.

Because that is what the American Dream is all about.

It is an honor to be a part of the world premiere
