O

n Friday, June 17, Frankfurt School of Finance & Management celebrated the topping-out ceremony at the business school’s new campus in Adickesallee. The ceremony – during which the topping-out wreath was raised above the building – was attended by several hundred prominent speakers and other guests from the worlds of business, politics, government and metropolitan society.

Others present at the topping-out ceremony included numerous members of the business school’s Advisory Board and Board of Trustees, graduates from various degree courses and programmes, academic staff, FS Friends and sponsors, long-term supporters and Frankfurt School employees. m Freitag, 17. Juni, feierte die Frankfurt School of Finance & Management Richtfest auf ihrem neuen Campus an der Adickesallee. Zur Zeremonie am Vormittag, bei der der Richtkranz errichtet wurde, konnte die Frankfurt School mehrere hundert prominente Redner und Gäste aus Wirtschaft, Politik, Verwaltung und Stadtgesellschaft begrüßen. Auch zahlreiche Mitglieder aus Stiftungsrat und Kuratorium, Absolventen der verschiedenen Studiengänge und Programme, Dozenten, Freunde und Förderer sowie langjährige Wegbegleiter und Mitarbeiter der Frankfurt School nahmen am Richtfest teil.

m Donnerstagabend, 21. Januar 2016, kamen Freunde und Förderer, Alumni, Mitglieder des Präsidiums und der Fakultät, Stiftungsräte und Kuratoren der Frankfurt School zum Neujahrsdinner zusammen. Dr. Matthias Zieschang, Vorstand Controlling und Finanzen der Fraport AG und Mitglied des Kuratoriums der Frankfurt School, förderte über die Fraport AG den Abend mit 8.000 Euro.

Die Frankfurt School sei eine förderungswürdige Institution, erläuterte er sein Engagement. Er appellierte an die Gäste, sich der Fraport AG anzuschließen und die Frankfurt School auf ihrem Weg zu einer der besten europäischen Business Schools zu unterstützen. Den vielen Förderern, die die Frankfurt School bereits begleiten, dankte Professor Dr. Udo Steffens herzlich und ermunterte sie, sich einzubringen. Er verwies auf die Baumpatenschaften, die Förderer am neuen Campus übernehmen können. Barbara Brosius, die kürzlich eine Eiche für den Garten stiftete, dankte er für das Engagement und überreichte der Förderin symbolisch „ihr“ Bäumchen.

n the evening of Thursday, January 21, 2016, alumni, sponsors and friends of Frankfurt School joined members of the Executive Board and faculty, Board of Trustees and Advisory Board at the business school’s annual New Year’s Dinner.

Dr Matthias Zieschang, Executive Director Controlling and Finance at Fraport AG and a member of Frankfurt School’s Advisory Board, sponsored the evening on behalf of Fraport AG with a generous donation of 8,000 euros. Frankfurt School is an institution eminently worth supporting, explained Dr Zieschang, before urging dinner guests to join Fraport AG in assisting Frankfurt School on its quest to become one of the top business schools in Europe. Professor Dr Udo Steffens thanked the many sponsors whose generosity has already enabled Frankfurt School to make such impressive progress, encouraging them to become more involved in the business school’s ongoing development. He highlighted the tree sponsorship campaign on the new campus as one example, giving thanks to Barbara Brosius – who recently donated an oak tree to the gardens – and handing her a symbolic token of “her” tree. Jetzt Deutschlandstipendium einrichten und Frankfurt SchoolStudierende fördern

Sponsor a Deutschland­stipendium and help a Frankfurt School student ­

E

in Jahr lang erhalten die Deutschlandstipendiaten eine monatliche Unterstützung von 300 Euro. Von den insgesamt 3.600 Euro kommt die Hälfte vom Bund. Die anderen 1.800 Euro spenden Förderer, die die Hochschulen gewinnen. Das Deutschlandstipendium wird nach Leistungskriterien vergeben. Auch die Frankfurt School will wieder so viele Deutschlandstipendien wie möglich einrichten und bittet interessierte Freunde um Unterstützung. Spenden für das Deutschlandstipendium können steuerlich geltend gemacht werden. Gerne stellt die Frankfurt School den Kontakt zwischen Förderern und Stipendiaten her – zum Beispiel bei der Stipendienvergabefeier am 4. November.

olders of Deutschlandstipendium scholarships are paid a monthly allowance of 300 euros for one year. Half of the total amount of 3,600 euros is paid by the German federal government; the remaining sum of 1,800 euros is donated by sponsors of the educational institutions concerned.

Deutschlandstipendium scholarships are awarded on the basis of academic performance. Once again, Frankfurt School is hoping to set up as many scholarships under the Deutschlandstipendium programme as possible, and is asking interested Friends and sponsors for their support. Deutschlandstipendium donations are potentially tax-deductible. Frankfurt School would be delighted to put sponsors and scholarship holders in touch with each other – at the scholarship awards ceremony on November 4, for example.

Robert Bosch Junior Professor Oliver Schenker joins Frankfurt School ­

er Umwelt- und Ressourcen-Ökonom Dr. Oliver Schenker erhält die Robert Bosch Juniorprofessur 2016 und kommt an die Frankfurt School of Finance & Management.

Ab Juni wird er dort eine Arbeitsgruppe leiten, die zur Fakultät der Frankfurt School sowie zum Frankfurt School-UNEP Collaborating Centre for Climate & Sustainable Energy Finance gehört. In seiner Forschung beschäftigt sich Oliver Schenker mit komplexen Gleichgewichtsmodellen, die es Entwicklungsländern ermöglichen sollen, langfristig nachhaltige Energiesysteme zu etablieren. r Oliver Schenker, a specialist in environmental and resource economics, has been awarded the Robert Bosch Junior Professorship 2016 and will be joining Frankfurt School of Finance & Management. Starting in June, he will head a working group attached to both the business school’s faculty and the Frankfurt School-UNEP Collaborating Centre for Climate & Sustainable Energy Finance. In his research, Oliver Schenker is developing complex equilibrium models for enabling developing countries to establish energy systems that are sustainable in the long term.

tarting in the 2016/2017 academic year, Frankfurt School of Finance & Management will be offering a new specialist subject to students on the Business Administration Bachelor degree course: Digital Innovation and FinTech.

FinTech Group AG is partnering the launch, and played a key role in proposing and designing the new concentration. Der Frankfurt Mini MBA

he Frankfurt Mini MBA launched by Frankfurt School is a compact executive education programme for professionals and future executives from around the world. The programme is designed to help students develop their management expertise, together with their knowledge of key strategic issues such as innovation, marketing and operations. Frankfurt School will be using a blended-learning approach. Students complete one classroom-based module on the business school’s Frankfurt campus in Germany. They can choose between four options – Leading with Impact, Developing and Executing Strategy, Business Development through Innovation, and Treasury Management – allowing them to concentrate on their own specialist areas. All other modules are taught online, so that students can complete them in their own time as distance-learning exercises. A number of exams are planned. Herr Professor Thun, was ist eigentlich Executive Education?

Generell richten sich Executive Education-Programme an Mitarbeiter, die eine Managementrolle übernehmen sollen, oder an Führungskräfte, die in ihren Unternehmen eine größere Führungsverantwortung übernehmen sollen. Klassisches Beispiel ist der Entwicklungsingenieur in einem Automobilkonzern, der die Führung eines größeren Teams übernehmen wird. Damit verändern sich Perspektiven und Herausforderungen für die zukünftige Führungskraft extrem.

Durch die Übernahme von Führungsaufgaben wird die Verantwortung größer und eine neue Fokussierung der Inhalte ist erforderlich. Das Erlernen neuer Managementdisziplinen ist unumgänglich, um erfolgreich zu sein. Mit Executive Education bereiten moderne Business Schools effektiv auf diese neuen Aufgaben vor. Die Programme sind auf Führungskräfte zugeschnitten; Teilnehmer lernen, andere Blickwinkel einzunehmen, neues Wissen auf ihre Bereiche zu transferieren und auch voneinander zu lernen.

Professor Thun, what exactly is executive education?

Generally speaking, executive education programmes target employees who are being groomed for management roles, or executives who are going to assume greater leadership responsibilities within their organisations. A classic example is a development engineer in an automotive company who is about to take over as head of a larger team. This drastically transforms the prospects and challenges facing the future executive.

When somebody assumes management duties, his or her responsibilities grow commensurately and he or she must learn to reprioritise what they’re doing. Learning new management skills is indispensable if they really want to succeed. Through executive education, modern business schools prepare individuals effectively for their new remits. The programmes are tailored to executive needs; participants learn how to look at things from different points of view, transfer new knowledge to their specific areas of activity, and learn from each other.

Voneinander lernen – inwiefern?

Die Teilnehmer kommen aus unterschiedlichen Branchen, etwa der Industrie, dem Finanzsektor, dem Handel oder anderen Dienstleistungsunternehmen. Unsere Teilnehmer sind u.a.

Juristen, Ingenieure, Naturwissenschaftler, aber natürlich auch BWLer. Diese Vielfalt an Wissen und Erfahrung fließt in Diskussionen ein und ermöglicht neue Perspektiven, über übliche Herangehensweisen und eigene Muster kritisch zu reflektieren und neue strategische Ansätze zu identifizieren.

Learn from each other – to what extent?

Programme participants come from a variety of backgrounds such as industry, the financial sector, commerce and other kinds of services. On our courses you’ll find lawyers, engineers, scientists and of course business administrators. This injects a huge diversity of knowledge and experience into group discussions and opens up all kinds of opportunities for reflecting critically on standard approaches and one’s own models, as well as identifying new strategic approaches.

Was hat Sie als Mitglied der Fakultät dazu bewogen, sich um Executive Education zu kümmern?

Für jeden Professor einer renommierten und international akkreditierten Business School wie der Frankfurt School ist der Austausch mit Managern äußerst interessant. Das ist auch nicht ganz uneigennützig, denn durch intensive Diskussionen mit ihnen erhalten Professoren neue Ideen für Forschungsfragen und Fallstudien. Andererseits lebt exzellente Executive Education von Lehrveranstaltungen, die auf aktueller Forschung fußen. As a faculty member, what made you decide to concentrate on executive education?

For any faculty member at a prestigious and internationally accredited business school such as Frankfurt School, it’s always fascinating to be able to share ideas with managers. And it’s not entirely altruistic, because often these intensive discussions can give you all kinds of new ideas for areas of research, and also for case studies. On the other hand, high-quality executive education is predicated on coursework based on cutting-edge research. Das Land der Regeln und der Nerds: FS Alumna Benita Barten über ihre Zeit in Japan Land of rules and geeks: FS alumna Benita Barten talks about her time in Japan

Im Jahr 2009 hat Benita Barten ihr Bachelor-Studium in Betriebswirtschaftslehre an der Frankfurt School of Finance & Management abgeschlossen. Anschließend arbeitete sie dreieinhalb Jahre im Firmenkundengeschäft im Bereich Light Corporates bei der Commerzbank in Frankfurt.

Danach ging sie für zwei Jahre nach Japan. Seit 2015 ist sie nun für die Commerzbank in Berlin tätig. Über ihre Zeit in Japan berichtet sie im Interview mit FS News.

In 2009, Benita Barten ­completed her Bachelor degree in Business Adminis­ tration at Frankfurt School of Finance & Management. She then spent three and a half years working in corporate banking at Commerzbank’s Light Corporates division in Frankfurt. After that, she spent two years in Japan.

Since 2015, she has been working for Commerzbank in Berlin. In an interview with FS News, she talks about her time in Japan.

Nach dem Studium an der Frankfurt School sind Sie für die Commerzbank nach Japan gegangen.

Wie kam es dazu? Was haben Sie dort konkret getan?

Nach dem Studium habe ich zunächst bei der Commerzbank im Firmenkundenbereich in Frankfurt gearbeitet. Dass ich gerne zum Arbeiten nach Asien wollte, wusste mein Chef.

Irgendwann meinte er: „Es gibt da eine Stelle in Japan, die gut auf Sie passen würde, aber Sie müssen sich schnell entscheiden. Wir suchen jemanden, der unser Kundenportfolio und unsere Sichtbarkeit in Japan ausbaut.“ Zunächst war ich etwas skeptisch – ich hatte mich eher in Südostasien gesehen, aber eine FS-Kommilitonin schwärmte mir von Japan vor.

Um zu testen, ob ich mich dort wohlfühlen könnte, buchte ich kurzerhand ein Wochenendticket nach Japan und stellte mich einem selbstauferlegten Survival-Training: Kann ich selbständig mit den öffentlichen Verkehrsmitteln von A nach B kommen und Essen im Restaurant bestellen? Nachdem ich diesen Selbsttest bestanden hatte, habe ich mich auf die Stelle beworben und landete zwei Monate später in Japan.

After studying at Frankfurt School, you went to work for Commerzbank in Japan. How did that come about? And what did you actually do there?

After graduating, I started off working for Commerzbank in Frankfurt, on the corporate banking side. My boss knew I really wanted to work in Asia, and eventually he told me: “There’s a job vacancy in Japan that would be a good fit for you, but you’ll have to decide quickly. Die japanische Gesellschaft und die japanische Unternehmenskultur sind ganz anders als die deutsche. Man sagt, alles sei strenger, reglementierter und hierarchischer. Welche Erfahrungen haben Sie gemacht – innerhalb der Bank und auch sonst?

Das gesellschaftliche und berufliche Miteinander ist in Japan sehr viel strenger und regelbasierter als in Deutschland. Vorschriften oder Anweisungen vom Chef werden grundsätzlich nicht hinterfragt sondern befolgt, auch wenn dabei viel Energie in bürokratische Prozesse gesteckt werden muss. Bei der Commerzbank ging es etwas lockerer zu als bei japanischen Unternehmen. Doch etwa 95 Prozent der Kollegen sind Japaner – hier wurde dann die soziale Kontrolle weniger über den Chef und stärker über die Mitarbeiter ausgeübt. Es gibt aber auch viele positive Beispiele, so bringt man Älteren großen Respekt entgegen und schätzt ihre Erfahrung und ihren Rat. Auch ist Pünktlichkeit viel wichtiger als bei uns. Zugführer haben in Japan vier Nachkommastellen auf der Uhr in ihrer Kabine – und das nicht aus Versehen. Auch auf der Arbeit muss man pünktlich sein. Wer mehrfach nicht wie vorgeschrieben um 8:50 Uhr auf der Arbeit erscheint, wird zum Gespräch mit dem Vorgesetzten geladen. Der fragt dann freundlich nach, ob man sich nicht einen zweiten Wecker zulegen möchte.

Wie hat Ihre Zeit in Japan Sie beeinflusst? Was haben Sie mitgenommen? Haben Sie eine Lieblingserinnerung – privat oder beruflich?

Mitgenommen habe ich ein Sprichwort, das sich auf Deutsch vielleicht etwas merkwürdig anhört: „Der vorstehende Nagel

student from Frankfurt School told me how amazing Japan was. So to find out if it would suit me, I booked a weekend ticket to Japan at short notice and put myself through a selfinflicted survival course. Could I make my own way from A to B using public transport, and could I order meals in restaurants?

After passing this self-imposed test, I applied for the job and, two months later, landed in Japan.

What did you do there?

I prepared customers from Germany for the Japanese market and helped them with the practical details of moving into Japan. For outsiders, the business world in Japan is sometimes hard to understand. I also represented Commerzbank at numerous events organised by chambers of commerce and embassies – networking was an important part of my work over there.

Japanese society and Japanese corporate culture are very different from Germany. People say that everything is stricter, more rule-bound, more hierarchical. What were your experiences in this respect – at the bank and elsewhere?

Social and professional interaction in Japan is much stricter and more rule-based than in Germany. You never question the orders or instructions issued by your boss; you always obey them, even if this means wasting a lot of effort on bureaucratic processes. At Commerzbank, the culture was a little more relaxed than in most Japanese companies. But 95 percent of my colleagues were Japanese, so it wasn’t so much my boss as my colleagues who exerted social control.

wird eingehämmert.“ Das bedeutet im Klartext, dass man im Alltag immer darauf achtet, niemandem zu nahe zu treten und vor allem auch niemandem zur Last zu fallen. Dadurch sind die Japaner sehr umsichtig – das vermisse ich manchmal in Deutschland: Diese große Höflichkeit, diese Rücksicht. Das schließt auch mit ein, dass man andere so sein lässt, wie sie sein wollen. Bei aller Reglementierung gibt es eine viel ausgeprägtere Individualität. Japan ist nicht umsonst das Land der Nerds. So lange man damit niemanden stört oder belästigt, kann man anziehen und machen was man will – niemand schaut einen dabei schief an. Durch diese große persönliche Freiheit habe ich ein hohes Maß an Selbstentfaltung erlebt.

Welche Bedeutung haben Alumni für eine Hochschule? Was denken Sie, können Alumni für ihre Hochschule tun?

Alumni sind ein wichtiges Element einer Business School.

Sie können eine Hochschule und vor allem die aktuellen Studierenden beispielsweise durch Mentoring-Programme unterstützen. Vor allem sind sie aber auch ein großer Vorteil für die Absolventen selbst. Man hat sofort ein großes und trotzdem fast familiäres Netzwerk. Man hilft sich gegenseitig und findet schnell Kontakt, wenn man beispielsweise in eine andere Stadt zieht. Eine enge Beziehung zwischen einer Business School und ihren Absolventen ist also für beide Seiten vorteilhaft. Mit der wachsenden Internationalisierung ist es natürlich auch schwerer ein enges Netzwerk aufzubauen, deshalb ist es wichtig, auch im Ausland Veranstaltungen für Alumni anzubieten und so den Zusammenhalt über Programme und Grenzen hinweg zu stärken.

But this has many positive aspects, too: for example, people have great respect for their elders and appreciate their experience and advice.

Punctuality is also much more important than it is over here.

In Japan, clocks in train drivers’ cabins are accurate to a thousandth of a second – and that’s no accident! You also have to be very punctual at work. If, for several days running, you don’t arrive at work by 8:50 a.m. like you’re supposed to, you’re invited to an interview with your supervisor. Who then suggests in a friendly manner that you might like to think about setting a second alarm!

How did your time in Japan affect you? What did you take away from your experience? Do you have a favourite memory – personal or professional?

I took away a proverb that may sound a bit strange in English: “The nail that sticks up is hammered down.” What this really means is that in everyday life, you’re always careful never to get too close to anybody, and above all, never to be a burden on anybody. This means that the Japanese are very circumspect – and sometimes I miss that in Germany: this enormous courtesy, this consideration. Part of it is also about allowing others to be what they want to be. For all the regimentation, there is a much more pronounced sense of individuality. It’s not for nothing that Japan is sometimes described as a country of geeks – in fact, the word “otaku” is now used in English! As long as you don’t disturb or inconvenience anyone, you can wear and do what you like – nobody gives you funny looks. Thanks to this considerable personal freedom, I experienced a high degree of personal growth.

In your opinion, how important are alumni for a business school? What do you think alumni can do for their alma mater?

Alumni are an important element of business school life. They can support the institution and current students in particular by taking part in mentoring programmes, for example. But above all, they also represent a major benefit for other alumni.

You get instant access to a huge network of like-minded people. Alumni help each other and quickly make contact when they move to other cities, for instance. So a close relationship between a business school and its graduates is mutually beneficial. And of course growing internationalisation means it’s harder for people to build up their own, close-knit networks, which is why it’s also important to organise alumni events abroad, strengthening bonds between alumni regardless of what they studied or where they are geographically.

Die Finanzbranche befindet sich im Umbruch: Innovative Produkte und Dienstleistungen entstehen zunehmend bei Startups und IT-Konzernen. Banken sollten sich daher für Innovationen von außen öffnen.

The financial sector is in upheaval: increasingly, the most innovative banking products and services are being developed and offered by startups and IT companies. The time has come for banks to open up to external innovation.

n der Finanzindustrie steht eine Innovationswelle bevor.

Ein Grund dafür ist, dass sich Bankdienstleistungen kaum verändert haben, um auf neue Kunden wie die Millennials und neuartige Kundenwünsche wie herausragend umgesetzte Smartphone Apps zu reagieren. Dabei ist die Finanzindustrie seit jeher IT-intensiv und digital. Neue, disruptive Technologien können jedoch große Veränderungen vorantreiben. Laut dem Gartner Hype Cycle können vor allem Smart contracts, Artificial Intelligence, Blockchain und Investment Market Intelligence für neue Innovationen in der Finanzindustrie eine tragende Rolle spielen. Etablierte Strukturen und komplexe Schnittstellen im Finanzsektor im Allgemeinen und in Banken im Speziellen hemmen hierbei das Innovationspotential. Die Entwicklung einer Online-Banking-App bei einer Großbank dauert deshalb wesentlich länger, als wenn ein Fintech-Startup sich die Entwicklung einer neuen App vornimmt.

Diese Fintech-Startups können Quelle für Innovationen für etablierte Banken sein. Sie bieten innovatives Potenzial, bereits fertig umgesetzte Ideen und generell eine schnelle Produktentwicklung. Eine Kombination dieser Vorteile mit den Vorteilen einer etablierten Bank, wie Marke, Kundenstamm, Distributionskanälen, dem geübten Umgang mit Regulatorik und einer internationalen Infrastruktur, kann gemeinsam zu einem erfolgreichem neuen Produkt führen – erfolgreicher als bei einem Alleingang einer der beiden Parteien. Dafür müssen Banken ihren Innovationsprozess öffnen, u.a. mit Hilfe von Ansätzen wie Open Innovation. Dabei geht es um Kooperationen, Austausch, Akquisitionen und Investitionen, wie es andere Branchen bereits vorgemacht haben, z.B. Apple mit dem Siri-Assistenten oder „Big Pharma“ mit der Akquisition von Biotech-Startups.

One of the reasons for this is the failure of banks to significantly change their service offerings in response to new customers, such as millennials, and their new demands, such as well-designed, super-convenient smartphone apps. This despite the fact that the finance industry has always been IT-driven – in short, digital. But now, new, disruptive technologies are on the point of catalysing major changes.

According to the Gartner Hype Cycle, developments such as smart contracts, artificial intelligence, blockchain technology and investment market intelligence could play a major role in driving financial sector innovation. Hampering this potential innovation are the established structures and complex interfaces that characterise the financial sector in general and traditional banks in particular. Thus, it takes a major bank significantly longer to develop an online banking app than it does a fintech startup, for example.

And yet these fintech startups could become a valuable source of innovation for established banks. They offer innovative thinking, ready-to-go ideas, and in more general terms, rapid product development capabilities. The outcome of combining these strengths with those characterising an established bank – brand, customer base, distribution channels, familiarity with regulatory requirements, international infrastructure – could be successful new products; products, in fact, that should be markedly more successful than they would be if either of the two parties attempted to “go it alone”. But for this to happen, banks must open up their innovation process by using approaches such as Open Innovation. The latter involves joint ventures, exchanges of ideas, acquisitions and investments similar to those that have already taken place in other industries. Examples include Apple and Siri, or the acquisition of biotech startups by Big Pharma companies.

In (very) simplified terms, the business model of established banks essentially consists of two components: transactions (such as payment processing) and consultancy or, more specifically, investment (such as investment advice). In the long term, blockchain technology may be an alternative for transaction processing. It has many advantages, in that it does not require a central authority or institution, and already incorporates a method for recording bookings (ledger) based on distributed storage (database). It is also capable of assigning unequivocal ownership (through digitally signed transactions).

This decentralised, secure architecture means that blockchain is already a reliable technology with “built-in trust”. There are

und sie ist überall und mit sehr hoher Geschwindigkeit verfügbar. Anonymität sowie Transparenz lassen sich ebenfalls mit Hilfe der Blockchain-Technologie einführen. Dies kann dazu führen, dass die reine Abwicklung von Transaktionen für etablierte Banken langfristig kein profitables Geschäftsmodell mehr ist. Eine Transaktion nach heutigem Stand dauert oftmals einige Tage und Transaktionsgebühren fallen an. In der Mitte einer Transaktion zwischen A und B steht zumeist ein Clearinghouse, welches die Abwicklung übernimmt. In der Blockchain-Technologie fällt nicht nur dieser Intermediär weg, sondern der Aufwand kann auf wenige Minuten reduziert werden und potentiell ohne Transaktionsgebühr ablaufen.

Bekannt geworden ist die Technologie durch ihre Anwendung für die virtuelle Währung Bitcoin. Probleme mit der Kernfrage „Wem gehört was zu welchem Zeitpunkt?“ vermag Blockchain in Zukunft zu lösen. Dabei sind alternative Währungen nur eine Möglichkeit für den Einsatz der Blockchain-Technologie: Zahlungsprozesse, Eigentumsregister von Grundstücken, Immobilien und Lizenzrechte, „Smart Contracts“, Validierung von Echtheit von Online-Reviews oder das Vermieten von Autos und anderen Objekten sind viele Möglichkeiten, die durch die Blockchain-Technologie revolutioniert werden könnten.

no transaction costs involved, and it is universally available at very high speed. Blockchain technology could also be used to combine anonymity with transparency in such a way that in the longer term, the simple processing of transactions may cease to be a profitable business model for established banks.

As things stand, banking transactions often take several days to process and incur transaction fees. Transactions between A and B are usually mediated by a clearing house, which takes responsibility for the processing. Blockchain technology not only makes this intermediary redundant, but reduces transaction time to just a few minutes – while, in principle, obviating transaction fees. The technology has gained widespread recognition as the platform for virtual currency Bitcoin. And in the future, blockchain should also be able to solve the key issue of “who owns what, when?” Furthermore, the technology could be used for much more than just alternative currencies: payment processes, real-estate registers, licensing rights, “smart contracts”, validation of the authenticity of online reviews, car rental and all sorts of other commercial concepts are just some of the activities that could be revolutionised by blockchain. Major banks such as UBS and J.P. Morgan are already well aware of the technology’s radical potential for

Blockchain ist nicht die einzige Technologie, welche die Bankenwelt verändern wird. Mobile Endgeräte wie Smartphones oder Tablets werden zukünftig der dominierende Vertriebskanal. Die bisherigen Kontaktpunkte zum Kunden sind Bankfilialen, Dienstleistungen durch Full Service-Anbieter („One-Stop Shop“) und Online-Banking im Browser oder in einer App. In Zukunft könnte der Point of Sale weitaus stärker das mobile Endgerät sein. Die immense Menge und Vielfalt von Apps macht mobile Endgeräte möglicherweise zur wichtigsten Plattform von Buchhaltung über Anlageberatung bis hin zu Immobilien. Außerdem müssen hier neue Kundenwünsche beachtet werden. Ein Beispiel für die Banking-App der Zukunft bietet schon heute Number 26. Das Startup setzt dabei auf eine Kooperation mit der Wirecard Bank AG. Number 26 ist für den Kunden eine komplette Bank in nur einer App. Die Umsetzung der App ist dabei „state of the art“ und übertrifft im Hinblick auf Benutzerführung und Design typische Online-Anwendungen von Banken. Fast jeder besitzt heutzutage ein Smartphone. Solch eine Marktdurchdringung erlaubt es, Millionen von Kunden über eine einzige Plattform zu erreichen. Filialbanken müssen umdenken; es wird zunehmend leichter und kosteneffizienter, den mobilen Distributionskanal zu nutzen.

But blockchain is not the only technology that will transform the banking world. In the future, mobile devices such as smartphones and tablets will become the dominant distribution channel. So far, the main points of contact with customers have been bank branches, full-service providers acting as one-stop shops, and online banking via web browsers and apps. In the future, mobile devices could become a much more significant point of sale. The enormous quantity and variety of apps available means that mobile devices are on track to become the most important platform for everything from personal budgeting to investment advice through to real-estate transactions. Once again, new customer expectations and requirements must be taken into account. Typical for future banking apps is Number 26, developed by the eponymous startup in a joint venture with Wirecard Bank AG. For customers, Number 26 is a complete bank in a single app. The app design is state-of-the-art; in terms of user experience and implementation, it is vastly superior to the online applications typically developed by traditional banks. Nowadays, almost everybody owns a smartphone. This degree of market penetration makes it possible to reach millions of customers through a single platform. Retail banks must rethink their branch strategies: it is becoming increasingly easy and cost-efficient to use the mobile distribution channel instead.

Erfolgreiche Kooperationen wie Number 26 mit der Wirecard Bank AG und das Bitcoin-Handelsblatt „Bitcoin.de“ mit der Fidor Bank AG zeigen, dass eine Zusammenarbeit zwischen Startups und Banken für beide Seiten Vorteile hat und möglich ist.

However, banking entirely without banks is not yet possible.

For banking as a retail business, banks will always be necessary. While startups offer a broad selection of innovative products, they still need infrastructure, scalability, regulatory mechanisms, customer contact, branding and brand credibility – all things that established banks can offer. Successful joint ventures like those between Number 26 and Wirecard Bank AG, or Bitcoin marketplace Bitcoin.de and Fidor Bank AG, show just how feasible and advantageous such collaboration between startups and banks can be – for both parties involved.

Zusammenfassend lässt sich sagen, dass Banken auch in Zukunft relevant bleiben, sich aber richtig positionieren müssen, um in der Digitalisierung des Finanzsektors weiterhin ihre Bedeutung zu behalten. Dabei ist eine Unternehmenskultur, in der Innovationen gefördert und Offenheit gestärkt wird, nötig. Offenheit bedeutet hier aber nicht nur Offenheit gegenüber neuen Kunden und Kundenwünschen, sondern auch gegenüber Startups, IT-Konzernen, Technologien und deren Ansätzen. Eine Einführung einer Open Innovation-Kultur kann dabei helfen, Inspiration von außen zu sichern.

In summary, we can say that banks will continue to remain relevant in the future, but must nevertheless position themselves skilfully if they are to retain their significance in the face of the financial sector’s ongoing digitisation. This means they will need to develop a corporate culture that actively fosters innovation and openness – openness, in this case, meaning openness not just towards customers and their increasingly varied wishes, but also towards startups, IT companies, new technologies and new models of interaction. Introducing a culture of Open Innovation is one way to ensure that banking institutions make the most of external inspiration.

Studentenfrage: Kommt das bargeldlose Bezahlen?

(Und ist das überhaupt wünschenswert?)

Student Question: Will payments all be cashless in the future (and is that a good thing?)

Utku Özkök Bachelor in International Management (BSc), 2. Semester / 2nd semester Der technische Fortschritt ist nicht aufzuhalten, und neue Entwicklungen gehören inzwischen zum Alltag. Man denke nur an Computer: Früher waren es riesige Apparate, heute hat die Technologie in einer Smartwatch Platz. Einst gängige Verfahren veralten mit der Zeit, und davon könnte auch das Bezahlen mit Bargeld betroffen sein. Aber ist das eigentlich wünschenswert? Beim digitalen Bezahlen finden Hacker relativ leicht Sicherheitslücken, Daten können manipuliert und Summen gestohlen werden.

Mit diesem Problem sind wir bereits konfrontiert – wer weiß, wie es sich künftig noch verschärft? Selbst wenn sich dieses Problem verlässlich lösen ließe, wären wir wirklich damit einverstanden, dass all unsere Transaktionen digital erfasst werden? Würden Kriminelle nicht wieder ein neues Hintertürchen finden? Ich glaube, Bargeld wird es in irgendeiner Form immer geben.

Technology has always had a tendency to grow closer to us. Take computers, for example: first room-sized, now as small as a smartwatch. Older methods will eventually become obsolete and money might as well, but is this what we really want?

Digital money can be hacked, manipulated and stolen quite easily. We already have this problem nowadays, who knows how bad it could become in the future?

Even if this problem were truly solved, would we be happy to have all our transactions digitally recorded; wouldn’t criminals just find a way through this? I think cash will always exist in some form.

Was geschieht, wenn unser globales Stromnetz durch eine Verkettung von Ereignissen zerstört wird?

A cashless society is much closer than we dare to imagine. In many countries, cash is becoming a thing of the past, being replaced by electronic money, biometric identity and RFID chips. A cashless society would increase the speed and convenience of financial services. It would also be very profitable for the banking sector.

Banks earn billions of dollars in fees from debit and credit cards but profit very little from cash transactions. However, we should also consider the rising concerns associated with this digital revolution.

How can we ensure data privacy? What if a series of events destroyed our global electrical grid?

Semester / 4th semester Die Vorstellung eines vollständigen Verzichts auf Bargeld ist sehr befremdlich, auch wenn bargeldloses Zahlen in meinem Alltag stark an Bedeutung hinzugewonnen hat. Es ist so schnell und bequem, mit einer Plastikkarte oder sogar mit dem Smartphone und einem Fingerabdruck zu zahlen. Der Schnelligkeit und Bequemlichkeit des bargeldlosen Zahlens stehen aber auch Nachteile gegenüber. Insbesondere ist hier der Missbrauch von Daten zu nennen. Ich möchte nicht durch bargeldloses Zahlen zum gläsernen Menschen werden und hoffe daher, dass uns das Bargeld noch lange als Alternative erhalten bleibt.

The thought of doing without any cash at all is very strange, even though cashless payment has become much more significant in my daily life. It’s so quick

and convenient to pay with a plastic card – or better still, with a smartphone and fingerprint. But the speed and convenience of cashless payments are offset by certain disadvantages; I would mention the misuse of personal data in particular.

I wouldn’t like cashless payment systems to turn me into a totally transparent individual, so I hope cash continues to be an alternative means of payment for the foreseeable future.

In Sweden, you pay for church collections using an app; in London you buy chewing gum from kiosks using a credit card, and in Rio de Janeiro you pay your bills through the fingerprint sensor on your iPhone. But in Germany, you’ll still see a notice reading “No card payments accepted for purchases of less than 5 euros” even at many supermarket checkouts. I think that’s positively backward – especially in a high-tech country like Germany and a financial centre like Frankfurt. In politics, finance and society as a whole, we ought to be more open to new methods of payment. After some 3,000 years of existence, cash is finally obsolete.

Herr Bartz, viele Jahre waren Sie in der traditionellen Banking-Welt zuhause. Jetzt haben Sie sich für FinLeap, einen Company Builder, entschieden.

Wie kam es dazu?

Kern meiner Arbeit waren immer organische Wachstumsstrategien. Dabei lässt sich schon länger feststellen, dass die Finanzdienstleistungsindustrie einen massiven Wandel ­erfährt. Die „Allfinanzanbieter-Strategie“ vieler klassischer Anbieter hat sich nicht bewährt. Kunden bevorzugen vielmehr Spezialisten, die ihnen jeweils die ideale Lösung bieten, etwa den Autokredit beim Autohändler oder die Baufinanzierung beim Immobilienmakler. Durch die Digitalisierung wird dieser Trend exponentiell beschleunigt. FinLeap bietet das ideale Umfeld, aktiv an der Neugestaltung der Finanzdienstleistungsindustrie mitzuwirken.

Mr Bartz, you spent many years happily working in the world of traditional banking. Now you’ve decided to join FinLeap, a company builder. How did that happen?

Organic growth strategies have always been a key aspect of my work. At the same time, it’s been clear for some time now that the financial services industry is undergoing a major transformation. The “one-stop shop” strategy pursued by many traditional financial services providers has not proved very successful in practice. Customers much prefer specialists who each offer the ideal solution in their field, such as car loans from car dealers or mortgages from estate agents. Digitisation is causing this trend to accelerate exponentially.

FinLeap offers an ideal environment for becoming actively involved in this reshaping of the financial services industry.

Sie können, frei von historisch etablierten Prozessen und Strukturen, konsequent auf die Zukunft setzen. Daher können sie schneller auf neue Kundenwünsche oder auch technische Möglichkeiten reagieren und die besten Lösungen umsetzen.

We often read and hear that fintech companies pose a major challenge to the traditional finance industry. But what does this challenge actually consist of?

The digitisation of the financial services industry is a challenge for every provider. Fintech startups benefit in particular from their entrepreneurial agility, exceptionally short innovation cycles and the “advantages of youth”, meaning they’re unhampered by legacy processes or structures and can focus all their attention on the future. In turn, this means they can respond faster to new customer requirements or technical opportunities and implement the best solutions.

Marginal phenomenon, innovation driver or pure hype – how do you see the fintech boom unfolding? Is it really sustainable?

The digital revolution is sustainably embracing every part of the economy. We already have impressive evidence of this in retail, tourism and the media. The structural transformation of the financial sector is having a similarly profound impact. The important thing is to develop the ability to keep one’s finger on the pulse over the long term. I’m convinced that in five years’ time, a list of the leading financial services providers will look very different from what we see today. As examples

Die wichtigste Änderung ist, dass wir nicht mehr über die Produkte einer Bank reden. Which banking activities or business lines are most likely to change as a result of fintech companies and their offerings?

The most important change is that we no longer talk about a bank’s products. The relevant definition is “financial services”, by which I mean services that help customers achieve their goals, such as car loans for buying a car, for example. On this basis, the obvious question is: how best can these services be provided, and by whom? Imagine, for example, car insurance you would only need to pay if you were actually driving the car. So if the car simply sits in your garage for six weeks, you pay nothing. Who would be the best provider of a service like that? An automaker? An insurance company? A new fintech company? Or maybe a couple of them working together?

Die Bargelddiskussion ist von gestern Cash or no cash? And who cares?

W

ollte man die diversen öffentlichen Aufreger der letzten Monate in eine Reihenfolge bringen, dann stünde die Diskussion um das Bargeld sicher weit oben. Die einen sehen ein Komplott der EZB am Werk, die anderen verdächtigen die Steuerbehörden hinter dem Vorstoß, die dritten sehen den Überwachungsstaat auf dem Vormarsch. Nur eines ist allen gemeinsam: Keiner glaubt an eine wirksame Eindämmung der organisierten Kriminalität. Warum auch? Wer in großem Stil Geld waschen will, bedient sich sicherlich nicht des Bargeldkoffers, und er wird schon gar nicht mit seinem Treiben aufhören, wenn keine 500 Euro-Noten mehr zur Verfügung stehen.

Nein, die Bargelddiskussion ist von gestern. Sie ist es deshalb, weil es bei der zukunftsfähigen Gestaltung von Payment, also der Art und Weise, wie man bezahlt, um Innovationen geht. Innovationen, die über neue Technologien, neue Anbieter oder auch neue organisatorische Lösungen auf den Markt kommen. Selbst im bargeldverliebten Deutschland wird die fortschreitende Digitalisierung das Bargeld als Zahlungsmittel verdrängen.

f you tried to put all the various public excitements of the last few months in some sort of order, you can be sure that in Germany at least, the “cashless issue” would appear at the top of the list. Some commentators see it as a plot by the ECB; others suspect the tax authorities behind this latest “death of cash” initiative. A third group views it as a resurgence of the surveillance state. All these different views have one thing in common: none of them believes that going cashless will do anything to curb organised crime. Why should it? Modern criminals laundering money on a large scale no longer swap suitcases full of cash – and certainly won’t stop what they’re doing just because they can’t get their hands on used 500-euro notes.

No, the whole cash debate is old news. And that’s because any truly future-proof payment system will be based on innovation – innovation that is coming to market in the form of new technologies, new providers and even new organisational models. Even in cash-loving Germany, ongoing digitisation will eventually replace cash with other payment methods.

One of the most enduring aspects of the “cash or no cash” debate is the issue of mobile payments. This is the area where a major breakthrough is most likely, not least due to the extraordinary proliferation of suppliers. Payment services providers, credit card companies, technology and telecoms companies – and yes, even traditional banks – are all constantly developing and launching new solutions. That these new payment methods are convenient,

Teil dieser Debatte, ein echter Dauerbrenner, ist das Thema Mobile Payment. Hier dürfte der Durchbruch tatsächlich unmittelbar bevorstehen. Verantwortlich dafür ist die dynamisch wachsende Angebotsdichte. Payment Services Provider, Kreditkartenanbieter, Technologie- und Telekom-Unternehmen aber auch traditionelle Banken entwickeln immer neue Lösungen und bringen sie auf den Markt. Dass diese neuen Arten und Weisen zu bezahlen, komfortabel, einfach und praktisch sind, wurde nie angezweifelt. Die Vielfalt und die Ausweitung der Angebote werden den Wettbewerb jetzt rasch und massiv hochfahren. Für eine schnelle Marktdurchdringung ist nichts förderlicher.

Die Digitalisierungswelle erfasst auch den Handel selbst. Gute Bezahlsysteme lassen sich in die Warenwirtschaftssysteme (ERP-Systeme, Enterprise Resource Planning) integrieren und ermöglichen Multi Channeling: Sie werden selbstverständlicher Teil aller optionalen Verkaufskanäle, die dem Kunden zur Verfügung stehen. Egal, ob ich im Ladengeschäft, telefonisch oder über das Internet einkaufe und unabhängig davon, ob ich den klassischen PC oder ein Smart Phone nutze – ein modernes Bezahlsystem ist flexibel einsetzbar, es fasst Kundenund Warendaten zusammen und analysiert Transaktionen nach den Maßgaben des Unternehmens.

Apropos Verbraucher: Im Sinne der fortschreitenden Digitalisierung nur konsequent ist das Konzept der Instant Payments – ein Multikanalverfahren, das im Jahr 2017 zur Verfügung stehen soll. Transferierte Geldbeträge werden nahezu transaktionsgleich gutgeschrieben. Als Plattform wird Instant Payment viele neue Anwendungen ermöglichen. Hier geht es nicht mehr nur um den Geschäftsverkehr. Instant Payment wird auch die privaten Geldgeschäfte revolutionieren. Heute sind immer mehr Menschen immer online – das Zeitalter des „always on“ ist längst da. Braucht es nicht Innovationen wie Instant Payment, damit wir die Chancen dieses Zeitalters realisieren können? Wer will heute, in zehn oder zwanzig Jahren noch Bargeld bei sich tragen? Es ist bedauerlich, dass, wie so oft in Deutschland, die Debatte um bargeldloses Zahlen negativ und angstbesetzt geführt wird. Es ist an der Zeit, die Potenziale, die sich daraus für Unternehmen ergeben, in den Fokus zu stellen.

And now this wave of digitisation is sweeping through the commercial world. Good payment systems are capable of being integrated into Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) systems and supporting multichannel strategies. In fact, they are becoming a de facto component in all sales channel options available to ERP buyers. Flexible deployment is the key characteristic of a modern payment system, which compiles all data relating to customers and their purchases no matter where or how the latter are made – in shops, over the telephone, via the Internet, using smartphones or traditional PCs – and then analyses the transactions according to each company’s preferred parameters.

As for consumers, the concept of Instant Payment – a proposed multichannel system that should be in place by 2017 – is simply the logical outcome of ongoing digitisation. Money transfers are credited almost as soon as the relevant transactions are completed. The new Instant Payment platform will make all kinds of new applications possible; no longer confined to business transactions, it will also revolutionise personal finance. More and more people are going online – the “always on” culture has already arrived. If we are to make the most of the opportunities it brings, we need innovations like Instant Payment. Among today’s Internet users, who still wants to be carrying cash around in 10 or 20 years’ time? It is unfortunate that – as so often happens in Germany – the whole debate about cashless payments has taken such a negative, angst-ridden turn. It is high time we focused on the amazing opportunities which this rapidly cresting wave is bringing for businesses and individuals alike.
