Welcome to the Toronto Fringe Festival!
It is thrilling to be truly back in person with our beloved summer tradition. We have just over 100 shows for you to discover, and we are so excited to be returning to our friends at the Tranzac to host our POSTSCRIPT Patio, in the heart of Toronto’s Annex neighbourhood.
We have assembled an incredible team to bring you a brilliant, fun-filled festival. We are in 12 of our city’s finest theatre venues, including for the first time ever the Alumnae Theatre and The Tank House at the Young Centre for the Performing Arts. You can also discover five off-the-beaten-path unconventional venues for the full, one-of-a-kind Fringe experience you love.
Alongside the festival, we are so glad to offer our New Young Reviewers program once again, supported by the Jon Kaplan Legacy Fund - look out for those reviews to discover some great shows. We are equally grateful to our longtime champion, Neville Austin, whose support is making it possible to bring back our popular Teen Fringe camp AND to launch a brand new KidsFest Day Camp this July.
Last year we launched the hugely impactful Community Tickets program, and thanks to the support of some major Fringers, we are thrilled to offer it again. If the cost of a ticket is a barrier for you or someone you know, please reach out and we will make sure you get to see a show this summer.
So please, support the artists, share the shows you love, and come and join us at the Patio for some beautiful refreshments, wonderful food, and lots of free entertainment.
Happy Fringing everyone. With your support we can keep this Toronto summer tradition going!
World Fringe is the international Fringe Festival association set up to serve the global Fringe community, including artists, venues, audiences and all those involved in the creative process. It is made up of more than 300 fringe festivals from across the globe, from Edinburgh to Adelaide, and from Montreal to Singapore.
The World Fringe Congress brought individuals and organisations from the Fringe sector together for the first time under one roof. By creating a platform for global connectivity, these meetings have helped to strengthen the sector as a whole. Fringe Festivals are important for cultural ecology as a platform for creativity and innovation. They enable emerging artists to present their work without the traditional restraints of commercial theatre spaces. Fringe provides an opportunity for exchange and a community between different countries and cultures, a place for freedom of exploration, and diverse voices to be heard and celebrated. Fringe Festivals foster collaboration between different artistic disciplines creating a vibrant cultural landscape that encourages creativity and expression.
The Toronto Fringe has always been a front runner in innovation and connectivity. The team are passionate and work hard to enable sparks to fly and stars to be made. They optimize the Fringe ethos of ‘If you want to do it you can… Fringes offer an alternative!’
Best Wishes, Holly Lombardo & Cath Mattos World Fringe Co-foundersThe last three years have been challenging ones as we struggle with the fallout from the pandemic, inflation, and global unrest. It’s hard sometimes to remain upbeat and positive about the future. But even in these moments, I see plenty of reason to feel hopeful and excited.
If there’s anything these last three years has taught me it is how incredibly vital the arts are to our human psyche and well-being. Particularly in the Fringe World, where so much is about the wonderful diversity of artistic expressions –providing us an outlet for human connection and inter-activity. It’s a world in which we are free - and encouraged! - to ‘think outside the box’; exploring different ways in which to express, share, and to celebrate the stories we all have in new and exciting ways. Each of us embracing what makes us unique and special while at the same time, finding out how similar we are in our own shared experiences.
I want to thank you, the audience, for being willing to take that leap of faith into the Fringe World and trying something outside your norm. For expanding your hearts and minds to new possibilities, thoughts, and ideas. For truly embracing the spirit of Fringe and coming out to see these shows. Your support means the world to these artists whose talents inspire each and every day – something I’m always in constant admiration of.
As a CAFF member Festival, we strive to give artists space in which to share their stories in a way that best showcases how they want to tell it, with 100% of the ticket price going directly back to them.
Stretch yourself. See a show you know nothing about. Bring someone along to share this experience with. And tell everyone you know about the Wonderful World of Fringe. It only takes a small pebble in the pond to cause a cascade of ripples with far reaching effects. All it takes is that first step …
Happy Fringing!
Hugs, Michele Gallant CAFF PresidentFirst, I want you to know that you—yes, you, the person reading this—are truly brilliant and are deserving of all that you dream up. I hope these words provide a bit of inspiration and strength to keep going and growing. Be, and be well!
I wrote these remarks back in mid-April, from a hotel room in New York City. I was there for a conference and thought it wise to look into seeing a Broadway show. Several of the shows— and are you ready for this?—“started from” $100 a ticket… USD! Correct, if I wanted to check out a Broadway show I’d likely be paying $140 CAD, or more, to gain access. In that moment, I was reminded of the critical importance of the Fringe and why I’ve proudly served as Board Chair over six years. Accessibility comes in so many forms, and by providing a platform for audiences to see shows at a ticket price that enables access for a wider range of people, we ensure as many people as possible have access to art, to creativity, and to novel experiences.
Of course, while we’re fighting to keep ticket prices and fees low and because Fringe gives all— yes, all—of the box office revenue to these amazing creators and artists, this important charity called Toronto Fringe needs your help to stay true to its mandate. Your generous donations are our life force, so we’re asking you to give, to get others to give, and to give again if you’re able. To keep Fringe going strong, we’ve launched a $500,000 fundraising campaign for the 2023 calendar year and hope you’ll work alongside us as we push towards meeting this goal. Check out the website, Tip the Fringe, or call the Fringe Office as ways to donate.
And for those inquiring minds, I didn’t end up seeing a show while in the Big Apple. The thought of seeing up to 12 Fringe shows for that amount while supporting local artists was, at that moment, my New York state of mind.
Create a great day,
Chair, Board of Directors, Toronto Fringe and President and Managing Partner, BIPOC Executive Search Inc.We acknowledge that our festival occupies spaces in the city known as Toronto, on lands and waterways that have known human activity for thousands of years. It has been the territory of the Haudenosaunee Confederacy of Six Nations, and more recently is also the territory of Treaty 13 with the Mississaugas of the Credit, who are part of the Anishinaabe Nation. These territories are of the Dish With One Spoon Covenant: a single dish that holds all the bounty, and one spoon to draw from that dish. Everyone will only take what they need, always ensuring that something is left for those who follow. We acknowledge our privilege to stand on this land, our responsibility to uphold truth, and our shared stewardship of our home and each other.
The Fringe is dedicated to promoting and creating a climate-conscious theatre festival, both onstage and off. We acknowledge our responsibility to take care of our planet, not take from it, as we gather to create, connect and play together across this city. We have partnered with the Canadian Green Alliance, a not-forprofit devoted to bridging the gap between sustainability and theatre – to ensure we keep the environment front of mind.
We are committed to making a festival that is vibrant, diverse, inclusive, welcoming, and safe. We’re dedicated to creating spaces where community thrives. Authentic safer spaces require commitment, accountability, and support from everyone in our community. If you witness or experience harassment, violence, or discrimination, please tell us. We will listen, and we will support you. fringetoronto.com/about/safer-spaces
We acknowledge our continuous work to remove barriers to accessing our Festival – Fringing is for everyone, and we are committed to building an inclusive festival for all patrons, staff, volunteers, and artists. We work with our community to identify, prevent, and remove barriers so a fulfilling experience can be enjoyed by all. We listen, we learn, we adapt. fringetoronto.com/access
The Toronto Fringe is a platform for everyone to access, discover, and experiment with the arts. We centre access, accountability, creativity, exploration, and support in everything that we do. fringetoronto.com/about/mission-history
...you support a vital opportunity that empowers and amplifies artists – the artists who move us, who challenge us, who entertain us, who reflect who we are and what we care about. You invest in the power of storytelling and shared experiences. Fringe cultivates community, fosters the next generation of art makers, and believes in the power of live theatre. We are where art starts for so many – Fringe feeds the theatre ecosystem and supports its sustainability.
What you experience at the Toronto Fringe Festival is a portion of what we do to fuel our city’s performing arts: our year-round programming includes workshops, grants, playwrighting contests, training programs, and platforms like our Next Stage Theatre Festival to bring rising stars to the next level. For many artists AND audiences, Fringe is their first stage, where they discover their voice and the profound experience of theatre. Fringe is a large financial contributor to the overall economy, a proven source for strengthening mental health, a necessary form of education, and a vital role in building community. And above everything it is the place where everyone is welcome.
We need your help. Every bit matters. We’re in the midst of our biggest fundraising campaign ever because our fiscal stability has been jeopardized. With your help, The Toronto Fringe can get back on track and become more resilient for the future. Together, let’s ensure that artists and audiences can continue to share their vital stories for the next 35 years, and beyond.
“For many years, I was an actor and writer, just like many of the artists whose work you see at this festival. I’ve seen first-hand the magic and the power of theatre at the Fringe. The reason I’m the Executive Director is because over the years I have had the joy and privilege of performing in and attending many Fringe festivals, and I wouldn’t be where I am today without Fringe.”

Whether you’re a first-time Fringer or a seasoned pro, we’ve got some tips to help you make the most of your experience. There is no one way to Fringe. With over 100 shows, a whole KidsFest program and club, our POSTSCRIPT Patio, and more, the options are endless. Here are our tips on ways to get the most out of your Fringe!
1 .MAKE A DAY OF IT!
Plan out your day to see a few shows, while taking a break for snacks and refreshments at the POSTSCRIPT Patio (indoors and outdoors at The Tranzac).
2 .ALLOW ROOM FOR SURPRISE
With 100+ shows to choose from, we host seasoned artists, first-timers, those coming from overseas, and everywhere in between. Take a chance on a show you know nothing about – these are often the most special experiences. Use our online show generator to get a random pick.
3.I F YOU ARE GOING TO SEE MULTIPLE SHOWS, the 5-show pass is your BEST deal, plus you can tap your Fringe Festo Card at any venue and go! Festo Cards are available at both Festival Box Offices.
4.A GREAT WAY TO MAXIMIZE the number of shows you can see is to group your show schedule by venue location. Some venues have multiple theatres, and others are located near each other.
5.I N THE IMMORTAL WORDS OF SCAR , “BE PREPARED!”
You never know what summer in Toronto will bring you. Our venues are air conditioned, but line-ups are outdoors, so consider sunscreen, water, and anything else you need. (Consider a light layer if you are sensitive to airconditioning!)
6.M EET THE FESTIVAL ARTISTS AND OTHE R PATRONS
One of the most iconic Fringe experiences is having an artist pitch their show to you. We are bringing word-ofmouth recommendations alive with CHATTY HOUR. Every day at the POSTSCRIPT Patio between 5pm – 7pm, Chatty Hour will bring artists, patrons, and volunteers together to share their favourite Fringe experiences so far. Join for a recommendation or to rave about a show you went to!
7.EXPECT THE UNEXPECTED BY STAYING I N THE KNOW
Follow us on socials to keep up to date on the latest events, tips, behind-the-scenes news, and sneak peaks. Join the #FringeTO conversation.
@Toronto_Fringe /torontofringe
8.GIVE YOURSELF TIME TO GET HERE, AN D THEN SOM E
Check ttc.ca for TTC updates, and make sure road closures and construction won’t slow you down. Summer in Toronto means traffic in Toronto, so consider walking or wheeling rather than risking the roads.
9.BRING YOUR FAMILY TO OUR KIDSFEST CLUB
With family-friendly shows as well as shows by and for teens, Fringers of all ages are welcome.
10.H ELP MAKE A HIT SHOW BY ATTENDIN G EARLY IN THE FESTIVAL.
Shows with the highest sales in their venue from the first week of Fringe will be awarded Patrons’ Pick, which means they get an additional show on the final Sunday Be sure to attend the awards night on Friday, July 14 to learn who those picks are and get your tickets!
FRINGING IS FOR EVERYONE. It can mean coming to the festival, discovering and experiencing something new, or reconnecting with familiar faces and places. It’s local art. It’s a vibe. No matter which way you Fringe, you belong here. There’s no one way to do it – how you Fringe is as unique as you are!

fringetoronto.com/about/safer-spaces
The health and safety of staff, volunteers, artists, and patrons is a priority. Toronto Fringe requires staff, volunteers, and artists to wear masks indoors in public spaces, and encourages patrons to do so as well. Some venues and productions will require masks to be worn by everyone, and masks and hand sanitizing stations will be available at all festival venues.
Please do not attend if you have a fever or are experiencing any symptoms of COVID-19, have tested positive for COVID-19 within 5 days of attending, or if you have had close contact with anyone suspected or confirmed of having COVID-19. Fringe assumes no liability for any actual or perceived transmission of COVID-19 in attending or participating in the Festival.
Your cooperation and consideration of one another matters – masks and symptom screening prevent any artists from having to cancel performances, and means patrons who may be immunocompromised are not excluded from attending our festival either. Everyone deserves to Fringe safely.
The Toronto Fringe Festival has been an unjuried platform for indie artists since 1989. The shows are not curated, they are chosen by lottery, or on a first-come-first-served basis. Fringing is punk-rock - the movement began with 8 companies appearing uninvited to the inaugural Edinburgh International Festival in 1947, and it grew all over the world. This is a grassroots, do-it-yourself movement that cultivates cross-pollination between community and art.
We are a member of the Canadian Association of Fringe Festivals, which supports over 30 Fringe Festivals from across Canada and the USA, and offers the guiding tenants that shape Fringe Festivals. Learn more at fringefestivals.com
We are also proud members of the Toronto Alliance for the Performing Arts (tapa.ca), and of the International Fringe Festival Association, World Fringe (worldfringe.com).

Fringe volunteers have been the heart and backbone of the beloved summer festival since the beginning. It takes a team of volunteers to make this possible and we couldn’t Fringe without them. We were sorry to learn of the passing of two long-standing Fringe volunteers, Harvey Lalonde, and Kevin Havins, who spent countless hours volunteering with Fringe over the years. A thank you to them and all of our volunteers.
