WELCOME TO THE FRINGE!

We are so excited to share this festival full of incredible events, new productions, and community activations with you. The Toronto Fringe team has worked hard this past year to bring us all back to Fringe’s roots of community, placemaking, and celebration. With something for everyone, this year’s Toronto Fringe Festival includes 77 shows in 16 venues across the city, and the return of our Fringe Patio (our “home” as we think of it) to the Tranzac in the Annex neighbourhood.

Whether you are joining us to see a performance, put on a show, connect with community, or you’re learning about Fringe for the first time, we hope you’ll feel at home here with us. We believe strongly in the continued work of creating safer spaces for all who interact with our programming, and we thank you, our dynamic Fringers, for continuing to help us make the festival a welcoming place for all.

Alongside the festival, we are so glad to host the Theatre Entrepreneurs’ Network & Training (TENT) and New Young Reviewers programs at the Young Centre for the Performing Arts in the Historic Distillery District. We are equally grateful

A MESSAGE FROM CAFF

On behalf of the Canadian Association of Fringe Festivals (CAFF), welcome! You are engaging in a North Americawide network of Fringes, that includes over 30 members across Canada and the US. Whether this is your first Fringe or you are a veteran goer, you’re sure to discover inspiring and innovative work at this year’s Canadian Fringe Festivals. This summer, thousands of artists will take the stage nationwide as festival-goers gather to celebrate diversity, community and artistic freedom.

My number one tip - purchase a multi-show pass! Pick a sure bet (or a show you know you will love), attend a show another Fringer recommended to you (perhaps while waiting in line for that first show!), and finally, choose a show at random from the program!

As festival producers, we are not the tastemakers - you are. If you see something you love, tell everyone! Word-ofmouth is key to the success of shows at the Fringe.

In 2023, Canadian Fringes returned over $3.2M in box office revenue to artists. By Fringing with us, you are contributing to an artistic movement that has become an integral part

to our longtime champion, Neville Austin, whose support has enabled us to offer dedicated programming for youth, including our Young Creators’ Lab and Fringe Kids Day Camp.

You know the drill! Support the artists by seeing and talking about your favourite shows, support the festival by Tipping the Fringe, and join us at the Patio for some beautiful refreshments, wonderful food, and the best two weeks of the summer.

Happy Fringing!

of the Canadian cultural landscape. Fringe Festivals support artists, create jobs, and drive local economies. And as always, artists keep 100% profit from their ticket sales.

I am asking anyone who loves the Fringe to support your local festival today to ensure it’s here tomorrow. When you buy a ticket at a Fringe, you are directly supporting the artist on the stage. You can ensure that artist gains access to the platform and the resources they need to get there in the first place by supporting the festival itself. If you are able to, please consider making a donation to your local Fringe today.

WE ACKNOWLEDGE

We acknowledge that our festival occupies spaces in the city known as Toronto, on the territory of Treaty 13 with the Mississaugas of the Credit, who are part of the Anishinaabe Nation, and which is also the traditional territory of the Haudenosaunee Confederacy of Six Nations. These territories are of the Dish With One Spoon Covenant: a single dish that holds all the bounty, and one spoon to draw from that dish. Everyone will only take what they need, always ensuring that something is left for those who follow. We acknowledge our privilege to stand on this land, our responsibility to uphold truth, and our shared stewardship of our home and each other.

We are committed to making a festival that is vibrant, diverse, inclusive, welcoming, and safe. We’re dedicated to creating spaces where community thrives. Authentic safer spaces require commitment, accountability, and support from everyone in our community. If you witness or experience harassment, violence, or discrimination, please tell us. We will listen, and we will support you. fringetoronto.com/about/safer-spaces

We acknowledge our continuous work to remove barriers to accessing our festival – Fringing is for everyone, and we are committed to building an inclusive festival for all patrons, staff, volunteers, and artists. We work with our community to identify, prevent, and remove barriers so a fulfilling experience can be enjoyed by all. We listen, we learn, we adapt. fringetoronto.com/access

The Fringe is dedicated to promoting and creating a climate-conscious theatre festival, both onstage and off. We have partnered with the Canadian Green Alliance, a not-for-profit devoted to bridging the gap between sustainability and theatre.

The Toronto Fringe is a platform for everyone to access, discover, and experiment with the arts. We centre ACCESS, ACCOUNTABILITY, CREATIVITY, EXPLORATION, and SUPPORT in everything that we do. fringetoronto.com/about/mission-history

PATRON SERVICES

All points of service at the Fringe are equipped with fidget toys, earplugs, magnifying tools, and pen and paper. The Festival Box Office at the Tranzac has additional sensory kit items (fidget toys, ear defenders, sunglasses, lap pad) available to borrow.

Staff and volunteers receive training on serving patrons with disabilities; however, we are always striving to do better. We encourage you to send us feedback, positive or negative, by contacting our Patron Services Coordinator at patron.coordinator@fringetoronto.com.

HOW DO I INDICATE ACCESSIBILITY NEEDS TO BOX OFFICE?

Online: If you are a new ticket buyer at Fringe, you will be prompted to create a Fringe patron account. When filling out your details, please select from the list of Access Categories. If you have booked tickets with the Fringe before, simply log into your account and edit “My Account” where you can select from the list of Access Categories. Before finalizing your ticket purchase, you can provide notes on any additional access requirements.

Over the phone: The Patron Services Representative will be able to help you update the Access Categories associated with your patron account and will also ask if you have any additional access requirements for the performance(s) you are interested in attending.

ACCESS MEASURES

Many Fringe shows provide additional access measures at select performances. Shows that have opted-in will have an icon beside their listing in this guide. For detailed information about the type of accessible performance, please refer to fringetoronto.com/access. You can search our online show listings by Access Measure type. Lastminute changes do happen, so make sure to check our website for up-to-date information throughout the festival.

This is a summary of services offered at Fringe. Find complete and up-to-date information about accessibility at the festival at fringetoronto.com/access
If you have access needs or a question about accessibility at the Fringe, contact our Accessibility Coordinators at access@fringetoronto.com, or call our Festival Box Office at 416-966-1062.

DANCE

Shows that tell stories and evoke emotions through movement and physicality.

GUTTED

Katie Adams-Gossage

A new contemporary dance work. A soloist carves into her own calcified edges, unearthing the sculptural materiality of the body. Tethered, drenched, gutted.

REMEMBRANCE

Kreatives By KW

Remembrance tells the story of a young Caribbean woman who has come to a crossroad in her life. She calls out for guidance from her ancestors. This calling out awakens her memory and the greatness that is in her DNA waiting to be reclaimed. A liberating and entertaining performance that uses Afro-Caribbean dance, movement expressions and story telling.

f Founded in 1989, the Toronto Fringe Festival is a groundbreaking platform for indie artists.

f Shows in the festival aren’t curated—they’re chosen by lottery or first-come-first-served.

f All ticket revenue is returned directly to the artists! The Toronto Fringe only keeps fees to pay for our box office system and staff.

f The Fringe movement is radical—it began with 8 companies crashing the Edinburgh International Festival in 1947, igniting a global movement with Fringe Festivals popping up all over the world.

f We’re proud members of the Canadian Association of Fringe Festivals (CAFF), an organization that supports 30+ Fringes across Canada and the USA. fringefestivals.com

0If none of your dice succeed , it goes wrong. The GM says how things get worse somehow.

1If one die succeeds , you barely manage it. The GM inflicts a complication, harm, or cost.

2If two dice succeed , you do it well. Good job!

3If three dice succeed , you get a critical success! The GM tells you some extra effect you get.

When you do something risky, roll 1d6 to find out how it goes. Roll +1d if you’re prepared and +1d if you’re an expert. (The Gamemaster (GM) tells you how many dice to roll, based on your character and the situation.) Roll your dice and compare each die result to your number. If you’re using FESTIVAL (technology, reason), you want to roll under your number. If you’re using FRINGE (rapport, passion), you want to roll over your number.

THE DICE

Also, pick one problem: First Aid Kit Is Empty , Hangry , Interpersonal Drama , The Show Isn’t Finished ROLLING

Intuitive , Thrifty , A Little Psychic

As a group, pick two strengths for your production team: Fast , Nimble , Popular , Locals ,

PLAYERS: CREATE THE COMPANY

Player goal: Get your character involved in wild adventures and try to make the best of them. Character goal (choose one or create your own): Become the leader , keep things running on time , be the star of the show , solve weird mysteries , keep being awesome (you have nothing to prove).

Give your character a cool theatrical name . Like Juliet Capulet or Surprise Pink or something. You have: one costume of your choice, a multi-tool, a cell phone, twelve dollars.

Choose your number , from 2 to 5. A low number means you’re better at FRINGE (intuition; diplomacy; seduction; wild, passionate action). A high number means you’re better at FESTIVAL (production; technology; cold rationality; calm, precise action).

Choose a role for your character: Performer , Writer , Designer , Director , Stage Manager , or Technician

Rip a whole in reality 6. Make the perfect ending for your show GM: RUN THE GAME Play to find out how they defeat the threat. Introduce the threat by showing evidence of its recent badness. Before a threat does something to the characters, show signs that it’s about to happen, then ask them what they do. “The zombie approaches your audience member, what do you do?” “The subway car is full, what do you do?” Call for a roll when the situation is uncertain. Don’t pre-plan outcomes—let the chips fall where they may. Use failures to push the action forward. The situation always changes after a roll, for good or ill. Ask questions and build on the answers. “Have any of you encountered a Rat King before? Where? What happened?” 1. 2. 3. 4.

PLAYERS: CREATE CHARACTERS

You are the cast and crew of a Toronto Fringe Festival production. Your mission is to get your show open on time, with an audience. Your producer has been overcome by a strange psychic entity known as Patrons’ Pick, leaving you to fend for yourselves while they recover at home.

Created by Lucy McPhee, based on “Lasers & Feelings” by John Harper

! If you roll your number exactly , you have FRINGE FESTIVAL . You get a special insight into what’s going on. Ask the GM a question and they’ll answer you honestly. Some good questions: What are they really feeling? Who’s behind this? How could I get them to _____? What should I be on the lookout for? What’s the best way to _____? What’s really going on here? (A roll of FRINGE FESTIVAL counts as a success.)
