SPRING FUNDRAISING EVENTS

COMING TOGETHER AT WALK WITH A FRIEND
On the warm, breezy morning of Saturday, April 15th, hundreds of people gathered for one purpose: to remember, honor, and support pediatric cancer patients, their families and caregivers, their doctors and nurses, and all the kind people who help support Friends of Kids with Cancer at the 23rd Annual Walk with a Friend.
Excitement blew through the beautiful lakefront of Creve Coeur Lake Memorial Park as families and businesses came together for popcorn, snow cones, bounce houses, and games. Kids skipped and played with painted faces as the adults assembled to either walk the 1-mile or run the 5K.

The Maryland Heights fire department and Fredbird rang a bell to start runners as they got set, and zoomed down the path, dressed in their Walk with a Friend blue tees.
Families and businesses then gathered to start the 1-mile walk. While some excitement still permeated, there was a distinct calm as families held hands, held signs, and held honor and remembrance of their loved ones.
Many families walk in memory of children and loved ones who are no longer with us. Other families honor the struggles that come with a cancer diagnosis. All who walked celebrated the lives of children and adults alike who are affected by cancer — honoring the strength, courage, love, and care that can only come from the personal and collective struggle of these special kids and families.
After the run and walk, guests enjoyed visits by favorite Disney princesses, and local mascot favorites like the SLU Billiken. Local vendors like Juan Tacos, MoRado Cones, Dogtopia Four Seasons - Chesterfield, HealthSource chiropractor, and Adamo Amore allowed guests to eat lunch, get a massage, or shop in the Vendor Village. friends from Hart of the City Photo booth donated beautiful photos for all to remember.
Many sponsor teams were seen in groups large and small, some who have been participating throughout the years like Midwest Elevator, Image Label Corporation, and Protiviti.

Free breakfast items like coffee, fruit, breakfast pastries, and more were available, thanks to Russo’s Gourmet Catering, Nourish Food Solutions, Walnut Grill, and other kind donors.
By the end of the morning, with a storm looming close, thanks to Friends’ wonderful volunteers, the event was quickly packed up just in time to stay dry. ▪

A BEAUTIFUL DAY TO GIVE BACK AT FRIENDS’ GOLF TOURNAMENT
THIS
The Annual Golf Tournament & Auction this year was a huge success, raising a record amount of over $375,000 for Friends of Kids with Cancer! Golfers arrived to Whitmoor Country Club with their shades on, ready to enjoy a lovely day of golf in support of the St. Louis pediatric cancer community.

The day got started with a delicious breakfast from Russo’s Gourmet Catering, accompanied by drinks from Carrie’s Merries bloody mary bar.
Before teeing off, attendees gathered to hear Emily, a patient in treatment, shrare her story and express her heartfelt appreciation to all those present for their support.

She first emphasized the impact that Friends has made on her journey, then highlighted simply how important it is to see the faces of the individuals who make it all possible.
Mark and their two friends playing golf.
Special guest Robert Thomas, center for St. Louis Blues.
“Seeing so many people here, giving their time and energy toward such an important cause fills my heart with so much joy. With your help, dreams are coming true,” she said.
Before the foursomes left for their first hole of the day, her words were met with a standing ovation from the crowd.
Robert Thomas, who recently committed to be the Friends 2024 Golf Tournament Honorary Chair, replacing Blues teammate, Ryan O’Reilly, flew in from Canada to meet morning speaker, Emily, and play golf.

Thanks to Friends’ many excellent sponsors, participants were able to snack and drink all day long. Arch Grants and Klamen Commercial Advisors sponsored the snack and beverage cart, which made sure that no golfers went hungry or thirsty during their round.
Delicious burgers and brats were grilled to perfection by Board Member and supporter Tommy Russo, provided by OB Clark’s.
Following the completion of all 18 holes, golfers met in the clubhouse for the annual live auction and dinner program. Unique plaques were distributed for many of the incredible sponsors, designed by Mohammed, a Friends Art Therapy patient.
Before the start of the live auction, guests heard another moving speech from patient mom, Rebecca, who enjoyed playing in the tournament with her husband that day. She spoke about their son Hudson, a 5-year-old currently in treatment.

All bidders were inspired by Rebecca’s remarks to raise their paddles! Guests placed bids on various items, including a luxurious vacation to Cabo San Lucas, signed MLB and NHL jerseys, more golf outings and other extravagant packages.
Friends is incredibly grateful to all the golfers, guests, and volunteers who contributed to the success of this fundraiser, enabling the organization to carry out the mission of helping kids with cancer... be kids! â–Ş

KAYE ROBERTS
How long have you been volunteering with Friends, and how did you get involved?
A friend invited me to help with the Halloween events years ago at Bridlespur. I realized how much I missed being involved and joined as a volunteer in 2016. Currently I am on the Trivia Committee and I help with the lunch deliveries for the Munchie Meal Program at Mercy.
What does volunteering mean to you?
I love the opportunity to help with the kids any way I can. Going through a cancer diagnosis is overwhelming as an adult. I can only imagine what it would be like for a child. If I can help raise money, drop off lunch or work an event to make things a little better for the kids, I’m all in. My only regret is not having more hours in the day to dedicate more time to the kids!

What is your favorite Friends activity or event?
It’s hard to pick just one. Of course I love the Trivia Nights! Being on the committee is a lot of fun and I’ve met wonderful volunteers along the way. I see how dedicated everyone is at the Friends of Kids office to make the events possible and I love being a part of that any way I can. Their energy and enthusiasm is incredible!
Kaye is a Real Estate Agent, born and raised in St. Louis. She and her spouse, Frank, share 3 kids and 12 grandkids. This year, Kaye is celebrating 25 years as a breast cancer survivor.

“Going through a cancer diagnosis is overwhelming as an adult. I can only imagine what it would be like for a child.”
PARENT’S NIGHT OUT MOMS AND DADS EVENTS

Friends of Kids with Cancer treats the whole family. That’s why Friends hosts events just for parents, as a way to foster community among individuals going through similar things, and as a reason to spend time in the company of other adults — things every parent needs.
In preparation for Mother’s Day, Friends invited dads to create something nice for the mom in their life in honor of Mother’s Day. Whether for their partners or their own moms, these dads created beautiful arrangements with the help of friend Jeanne Carbone, Supervisor of Therapeutic Horticulture at Missouri Botanical Gardens. Jeanne provided all the materials and let the dads do their own arranging.
In March, Friends invited moms to Amy’s Cake Pop Shop and Boozy Bites for a lesson on making cake pops. Moms got to enjoy this tasty craft and each other’s company.

At each event, these parents looked to have a great time with one another while strengthening relationships within the pediatric cancer community. â–Ş

FAMILY GARDEN NIGHT AT MOBOT
This annual special outing among the flora invited patient families to enjoy MoBOT on a spring evening this April. About 200 guests were greeted with gift bags containing journals and fish food for the Japanese Garden and went on their way to enjoy the entire private garden grounds, including the Children’s Garden.

Families explored seeds and potted plants with Therapeutic Horticulturalists and took them home for their own gardens. It was a great way to get out of the often sterile hospital setting to spend a beautiful evening exploring the outdoors with fellow members of the St. Louis pediatric cancer community. â–Ş
MUNCHIE MEALS EVERY WEEK
Every week, Friends of Kids with Cancer deploys volunteers to deliver a full lunch to each treatment center for patients and families in treatment.

Mary Jotte, Munchie Meal coordinator since 2009, creates a schedule of volunteers to deliver lunches and empowers them to contact hospital partners to get the number of families currently admitted, order lunch for those families, pick up the order, and deliver the food to the hospitals. Being in treatment “can be an all-day event, both emotionally and physically. Having something to eat for lunch is a godsend,” explains Jotte, who was a patient parent herself. ▪

CELEBRATING 25 YEARS WITH
NATASHA WESTRICH WOOD, ART THERAPIST

One of Friends’ longest contracted service providers is celebrating 25 years of service as Art Therapist. Friends feels honored to commemorate such a significant accomplishment for her this year.
She was one of the first art therapists in the region committed to practice in a medical setting, and feels extremely pleased with how far the expressive therapies have come.

After finding her mission as Barnes-Jewish Hospital’s first art therapist intern and finding her passion in helping the cancer population, she found Friends in the phone book and inquired about whether Friends was interested in offering art therapy to patients. She soon after became contracted by Friends to serve pediatric cancer patients at Mercy Clinic Children’s Cancer and Hematology—Cardinals Kids Cancer Center and The Costas

Center at SSM Health Cardinal Glennon Children’s Hospital.

“I still feel that same joy and excitement to go to work. Everybody I work with, we all have that same drive and passion.”
She feels the most effective when she can be that neutral person in a kid’s life who they can go to with their feelings. Giving them a neutral person to talk to allows them to express themselves freely, without the worry of affecting parents or caregivers.
More and more people are turning to art as a means of expression, as they become aware of its special capacity for emotion and conveying feelings. Tasha highlights the unique ability of art to connect everyone on a primal level; it is something we can all engage in regardless of faith, culture, or other social factors that exist.
“Art is the universal language. It has this power of reaching deeper levels of expression that your soul knows. You don’t have to think about it. It just

makes its way out. That, in essence, is part of the healing process,” Tasha explains.
Patients, as well as their siblings, are given the chance to express their emotions authentically through art therapy when they might not have the words or the energy to do so otherwise. Tasha focuses on the significance of allowing the kids a choice each time they visit, as they are not often given choices when it comes to receiving treatment.
AYA Group
In addition to art therapy, Tasha helps facilitate an Adolescent Young Adult (AYA) group at Mercy Clinic, along with esteemed partners Dr. Rob Hanson, Laura Hanks, Dr. Kurt Soell, and others.
This group focuses on older patients, who often feel even more isolated because of their age. It is the St. Louis region’s only dedicated young adult cancer program designed specifically for adolescents and young adults aged 15-30+.

“I was floored at how these adolescents were able to show their stories through their art. I knew immediately [art therapy is] what I wanted to do.”
Art from the Heart
Friends’ annual Art From the Heart fundraiser launched on September 23, 2010 after patient Kat and her sister Leccia, expressed their desire to feel heard and share their artwork. She now looks forward to this day each year, as the event not only opens the opportunity for kids to share their stories, but also enhances their sense of community.
“They wanted to be heard. They felt like nobody understood what they were going through,” she explains. “They would love an avenue to share their art and have other people bear witness and through that feel a sense of community.”
Tasha spends time at Mercy Clinic throughout the year providing art therapy to patients, in addition to producing artwork auctioned at the event.
Friends of Kids with Cancer expanded art therapy programming by contracting two additional art therapists to serve patients being treated at Siteman Kids at St. Louis Children’s Hospital and The Costas Center at SSM Health Cardinal Glennon Children’s Hospital. Tasha moved to treating patients exclusively at Mercy Clinic.
Since then, Friends’ three art therapists have facilitated thousands of hours of mental health services to patients through art therapy as well as the production of hundreds of meaningful pieces of artwork donated for auction at the Art from the Heart event—helping patients connect with themselves, their community, and fundraise for an organization that has helped them so much. ▪

COMMUNITY PARTNERS
SPOTLIGHT ON BUSINESSES WHO CARE
From April to June this year, local news station KMOV dedicated many hours of on-air support for Friends of Kids through their new community outreach program, 4You.

“We are committed to amplifying the voices and impact of non-profits that are feeding our community, providing jobs where there were none, addressing deep rooted issues and more,” announced KMOV according to their 4You web page.

Anchors, producers, camera persons, and many others helped spread Friends mission to the St. Louis community by interviewing patients, patient families, service providers, board members, staff, and volunteers.
They created promotional toy drive commercials and featured us throughout the day on their Day of Giving.
“Our goal is to help provide opportunity, improve lives and share dignity and purpose to create a stronger St. Louis together.”

Pat McCurren, Sleep Expert and owner of Mattress Direct, is in the business of keeping St. Louis comfortable — which is why he supports Friends of Kids’ mission of helping kids with a cancer diagnosis.
In partnership with KMOV, Pat hosted toy drives in each of his 18 Mattress Direct stores throughout the months of April, May, and June. Going on-air with KMOV, he told his own family cancer story, and encouraged the community to donate toys to fill Friends’ hospital toy closets.
“It’s such a great organization and, in our world, we want everyone to be as comfortable as possible. In my personal life, I lost my cousin to
childhood leukemia. Being able to help the kids who are going through this is such a great thing for us,” Pat explained on-air during a KMOV segment.

As a means of creating an alternatively comfortable and helpful experience, Mattress Direct opened its first showroom in 2011 in Chesterfield, Missouri. At that time, they set out to challenge industry standard pricing gimmicks and instead focus on helping customers find the right mattress and pillow based on the way they sleep. Through the overwhelmingly positive reception they’ve received since that time, Mattress Direct has expanded to 18 locations throughout the St. Louis region, and continue to grow.
MISSION TACO JOINT & MY POSSE IN EFFECT
Mission Taco Joint, the West Coast-style taco restaurant concept, celebrated its 10-year anniversary with a throwback party at Delmar Hall in April.
Right down the street from the original Mission Taco Joint on the Delmar Loop, guests experienced a night of tacos and entertainment from My Posse in Effect, a seven-piece band that performs decades of Beastie Boys music, excites crowds and transports them back to a more carefree time.
With three MC’s, a DJ and visuals from iconic music videos, the band replicates an authentic Beastie Boys experience, and put on a dynamic show that got audiences moving.

Mission Taco Joint’s food truck was parked outside the venue for concertgoers to purchase tacos before heading into the party.
All proceeds of ticket sales were donated to Friends of Kids and Mission Taco Joint they suprised the Friends staff by bringing lunch when delivering this oversized check of over $3,000.
