Friends of Kids with Cancer is devoted to enriching the daily lives of children undergoing treatment for, and survivors of, cancer and blood-related diseases.
Our mission is to be an advocate for these special kids and provide them and their families with the educational, emotional, and recreational support needed as a result of the long hours of chemotherapy, illness and isolation.

DEAR FRIENDS,
It is our pleasure to present the Friends of Kids with Cancer 2023 Annual Report. As we reflect on the 31st year as an organization, so much of our success is measured by growth. Our signature fundraisers had record-breaking numbers and wonderful attendance, and truly are so much fun! These events such as Trivia Night, Walk with a Friend, Golf Tournament & Auction, Art From the Heart, Hats on Day, Fashion Show & Boutique and all of the third party fundraisers are essential for our operational success. Yet, they are not just a revenue source. They also are programmatically meaningful and very special in how they bring unique patient engagements, making them memorable, exciting experiences for all!
More importantly, we measure success by the degree of positive impact on the kids and families we serve. The unfortunate reality is that the number of families that become a part of the Friends family only continues to grow. Our “Once a Friend, Always a Friend” approach is very unique as a charitable organization. The many essential programs in place ensure we are successfully supporting families throughout their journey… and always.
As our population grows, so will the need for the growth of support from our donors and volunteers. We are so grateful for the amazing support of our community to
ensure these wonderful successes continue well into the organization’s future. It is a message of hope that you send to our families. Your generous gifts undoubtedly show YOU are always there for them and your support makes their lives as enjoyable as possible.
All your generous acts of kindness were essential to the continued success and growth of our Educational, Emotional, and Recreational programs which provide the tools needed to keep the kids along with their families confident, focused, happy and courageous as they fight their battle with cancer.
Our Annual Report is a record of our financial success for 2023. However, we not only measure our success in dollar signs, but in the kids’ smiles and the endless notes of appreciation from parents and medical staff. HISTORY Our
TREATING THE WHOLE CHILD & THE WHOLE FAMILY
Friends of Kids with Cancer has a proud history of helping children with a cancer diagnosis exclusively in St. Louis for over 30 years. Jill Turec, Developmental Specialist at Mercy Clinic Children’s Cancer and Hematology Center, along with concerned parents, Molly Henry and Susie Snowden, saw the great need to enrich the daily lives and divert the attention of patients in treatment. These three women shared a dream that every child with cancer would experience as much fun, laughter, support, and normality as possible. It was this idea that was the birth of Friends of Kids with Cancer.
For over 30 years Friends has been driven to meet the everevolving needs of not only the patients but their entire family. Every aspect of support Friends provides is proposed by medical professionals and patient families. Starting in the office of Dr. Bob Bergamini, local Pediatric Hematologist-Oncologist, in 1992, Friends adopted his philosophy: treat the needs of the entire child, not only the cancer.
THE POWER OF THINK, FEEL & SMILE
Friends of Kids with Cancer helps cultivate mental well-being with Educational, Emotional, and Recreational programs that help children, and their families, cope with the daily challenges they face. Families are supported with specialized Think, Feel, Smile programming to suit the needs of each member in order to retain a sense of normality and maintain a sense of childhood.
Friends provides educational programs like tutoring to help patients and siblings with learning difficulties due to chemotherapy or medical visits that remove them from the classroom.
Emotional programming provides mental health resources like support groups, counseling, and expressive therapies, to help patients, siblings, and parents express their feelings in this challenging time.
Curating opportunities that allow kids and families to feel carefree is the core of Recreational programs, which provide special toys, activities, specialized gifts, parties, and experiences.
