Friends of Kids with Cancer is devoted to enriching the daily lives of children undergoing treatment for, and survivors of, cancer and blood-related diseases.
Our mission is to be an advocate for these special kids and provide them and their families with the educational, emotional and recreational support needed as a result of the long hours of chemotherapy, illness and
It’s in deep appreciation that we say farewell to Eric Vogel and Merri Cross as Friends of Kids with Cancer’s board members.
As owner of the local restaurant Walnut Grill, Eric Vogel dedicated his time on the Board of Directors to support the organization by donating food to various fundraising events, hosting toy drives at each of his restaurants, donating auction packages, and connecting the organization to his community and partners.
“I have deeply valued my time serving on the Board and being a part of this incredible group of dedicated individuals. The moments spent working with the Board and the team members of Friends of Kids with Cancer will forever hold a special place in my heart. A special thank you goes to Rick Lommel for introducing me to the organization and sponsoring my involvement on the Board.
“...My commitment to Friends of Kids with Cancer remains unwavering. I will continue supporting them both personally and professionally in the years to come. I eagerly anticipate participating in and sponsoring events in the future.”
Thank you, Eric, for your dedication to Friends throughout your many years of service.
There’s no doubt that Merri Cross has made a tremendous impact on the lives of children facing cancer through her dedication serving Friends of Kids with Cancer. For two decades, Merri was an active Board member, appointed Board President for 2019-2020. During her time on the Board, she has helped accomplish so much by chairing the Fashion Show multiple times, serving on many committees for Development, HR, and Trivia Night, and leading the initiative for the new Friends office space. Our beautiful new office space is thanks to her dedication to the enormous project in 2018.
“It has been such an honor and a privilege to work with the incredible FOKWC ‘Dream Team’, serve on the Board and chair the Fashion Show to support our kids.
“For more than two decades, these kids have been my heroes! They continue to inspire me and I will forever be grateful to have been given the opportunity to share in the success and support such an amazing charity.”
We are saddened to see them go, but are so grateful for their influence on this charity and their commitment to continue to support our mission. Thank you Eric and Merri for your crucial support in helping kids with cancer... be kids!
MERRI CROSS AND HER GIRLS PENELOPE AND CAMPBELLGina Bowders now serves as Friends’ Director of Development and actively collaborates with individuals and organizations to raise awareness, funds, and resources for our various support programs.
She has over 25 years of experience in business development with multiple fortune 500 companies. She earned her BA from the University of Missouri–St. Louis and is a former NCAA All-American basketball player.
Beyond fundraising, she is dedicated and passionate about raising awareness about pediatric cancer, and its impact on the whole family.
She is driven by a deep-seated desire to contribute meaningfully to this cause. She is welcoming this transition from a successful career in the corporate world to dedicating her skills and expertise to the non-profit sector. Her journey reflects a commitment to leveraging her strategic leadership and business acumen and her talent to contribute to the St. Louis community.
Paul Goldschmidt, St. Louis Cardinals’ First Baseman, continued his support for our patients this winter.
After walking on the runway as one of our guests in the 2022 and 2023 Fashion Show & Boutique events and meeting all the patient models and families, Goldy was inspired to continue making a difference in our pediatric cancer community.
Thanks to his generous spirit, all patient winter festivities were funded in part by Paul Goldschmidt.
Paul,
Thank you for all you do with the Children’s Hospital and Friends of Kids with Cancer. Your contributions truly made a world of difference to me and every other kid and family dealing with tough times.
I was able to get a free Cardinals jersey thanks to you and now will always wear your number at games or around town.
—Vanessa, PatientAffectionately referred to by the Friends’ team as “The King of Trivia,” Board Member, Tony Godfrey, is the patriarch of a passionate, dedicated, reliable, and warm family who have supported Friends of Kids with Cancer since their cancer journey started with daughter Bernadette Godfrey in 2010.
Because the family’s network is so immersed in the charity, it’s difficult to name all the ways in which the Godfreys support Friends.
For many years, Tony and his daughters-in-law, Danielle and Teresa, have been involved in the planning of fundraising events by participating on volunteer committees.
Tony and Danielle have connected us to businesses which support our mission through sponsorships and major donations at fundraising events.
Starting in 2022, Margaret Godfrey
began her own fundraiser in her home called One House for Charity, turning her holiday house party into a way to support Friends’ iPad funding for teens and young adults.
Tony’s family was a huge presence at Friends’ Trivia Night this year, and it wasn’t for the first time. (This is where “The King of Trivia” comes in.) He and Danielle secured sponsorships through their workplaces, Danielle and Teresa donated a personal sponsorship in memory of Bernadette, and the family purchased a total of six tables. In addition, Tony volunteers to bartend at the event, on his feet all evening ensuring guests have an excellent time. The family also collectively donated much of the beer consumed at the event.
Son Tim Godfrey has donated his video production talents at various events, capturing Art from the Heart and 3v3 Soccer with his business Tim Godfrey Media, LLC.
Tony is an integral part of the Friends annual Golf Tournament & Auction, using his connections to bring in major sponsors and soliciting multiple vehicles for hole-in-one prizes.
Matriarch, Kathleen Godfrey, volunteers that day and together, they help to support one of our highest-raising fundraisers each year.
Friends is incredibly grateful and touched by the generosity of this family and are inspired by the Godfreys’ passion to support other families touched by cancer. ▪
In Memory of Our Beautiful Daughter, Bernadette Godfrey Bernadette passed away on September 5, 2013, from brain cancerI was diagnosed with breast cancer when I was 35. At the time my boys were three and six. All I wanted to do was survive so I could raise them. Then in September of 2020, my oldest son Alex, who was 12 at the time, was diagnosed with a sarcoma.
We met with oncologists and were talking about port placement and treatments and chest x-rays. We lived the nightmare for 10 days. And then we met a surgeon who told us that he didn’t think it was cancer, he thought it was an infection.
In my book, Cancer Made Me Do It: Uncovering What is True, I write:
The expert surgeon was the first one to give us hope. He thought there was a good chance the first round of doctors were wrong. He cut open our child’s leg looking for infection, not cancer. But we wouldn’t know until they investigated it
under a microscope while he laid asleep on the operating table. The nurses called us as soon as they knew.
It was good news. The pathologist only saw infection. (We later learned everyone in the OR erupted in cheers when they heard the news.)
I told Joel it was the happiest day of my life. We kissed and cried, and held each other, and waited for Alex to move into recovery. Our boy was going to live. Our boy was going to be okay.
But while I was holding Alex’s hand and waiting for him to open his eyes, I heard the cries of another mother down the hall. I know she was hearing the opposite news. Her baby was not going to be okay. Glass was shattering in her heart.
I heard her pain and it mattered to me. Joel and I got a glimpse of it. We saw what we can’t unsee. We heard what we can’t un-hear.
Recovery, physical therapy, infectious disease doctors, crutches, stitches, bandages, beeping machines, one night in the hospital recovering... Even one night felt like too much.
Joel was getting coffee the next morning in the waiting room. A mom who waited behind him said it was day 80 of drinking that terrible waiting room coffee. Day 80.
I feel so weak thinking about those warriors. Those parents who
get the other news, the moms who drink hospital coffee for 80 days, the ones who lay awake looking out windows and watching families like ours walk away. We saw behind the curtain.
It was this experience that made me want to donate all of the proceeds from my book about my own cancer journey to Friends of Kids with Cancer. I think about parents who got the other news every single day.
And the reason I wanted to have the donations go to the Tom the Tutor Scholarship Fund is because Tom was one of my heroes. He lived such an honorable life.
In my book I write:
Tom, who spent his life mentoring, coaching, and teaching children with cancer, knew one of life’s secrets: to be rich is to leave the world not with accumulated wealth or material possessions, or superficial beauty— but to leave this world with fields of flowers, with gardens of seeds yet to bloom, with forests of trees that will provide shade for decades to come. To invest, and plant seeds of wisdom and love, and to tend to relationships, to people, to service. Tom, who lived a very modest life, died feeling like the richest man on earth.
Cancer is a terrible disease. It takes so much from so many. It brings us to our knees.
But when you realize that you don’t
have to do it alone, when you find your helpers, and when you allow yourself to be broken open—you experience a type of love and reminds you to hope.
And hope and love can light us up even amidst the darkness of cancer.
I am so grateful that Friends of Kids of Cancer exists because I know it provides children with cancer and their families both hope and love. And I am honored to donate the proceeds from my book to a scholarship fund that memorializes one of the most remarkable men I know. Tom Mulvhill brought hope and love to every single person that crossed his path. His impact will never be forgotten. ▪

100% OF PROCEEDS FROM ALL PURCHASES ARE DONATED TO FRIENDS OF KIDS WITH CANCER’S TOM THE TUTOR SCHOLARSHIP FUND
Engraphix Architectural Signage chose Friends as their charity for a 2023 project. Collaborating with the team to understand the needs of the organization, Engraphix enhanced the Friends’ office space as their way of giving to our mission in support of the community.
“What does a young mother who has always been very positiveminded and affirming do when faced with breast cancer and all the suffering, intrusiveness and uncertainty that has to go with it? Through her adept and purposeful writing, Melissa Fuoss refuses anything but an honest, forthright and often amazing journey through all the challenges, fears and pain. Her honesty includes an admission of how cancer changes one’s world even after recovery, but it isn’t just fear of recurrence that exists for the author, but, more importantly, a wonderful increase in concern and sympathy for all who suffer.”
“While what we contributed may seem small in comparison to their remarkable mission and achievements, the gratitude we feel is immeasurable,” the business shared on their social media.
The team created wall graphics in the office welcome area as well as the conference room, and created a custom acrylic sign to bring to events. These donated signs bring bright and friendly elements to our office, enjoyed by families, patients, staff, and all our special guests. ▪

MELISSA FUOSS AND THE MULVIHILL FAMILY STAND IN FRONT OF TOM’S ROOM—THE TUTORING ROOM DEDICATED TO THE LATE TOM “THE TUTOR” MULVIHILL. THEY PRESENTED THIS FIRST CHECK OF BOOK PROCEEDS AND GENEROUS MATCHING DONATION BY TERRI MANNING.On the afternoon of Sunday, December 4th, patient families gathered for holiday cheer at The Armory STL. Guests were met by Disney’s Elsa and Belle, Frosty the Snowman, and Rudolph, as well as Storm Troopers, Wookiees, Jedi, and other Star Wars characters.
Santa was in attendance (yes, THE Santa) and he took photos with families while playing silly pranks to get more smiles. Kids wrote letters to Santa with their wish lists and placed them inside his special mailbox.
“I think that was the real Santa and not one of his assistants.”
“I think that was the real Santa and not one of his assistants,” one small guest explained. “His mustache and beard were real and it’s the same outfit I’ve seen Santa wearing in movies, so it was definitely him.”
families attended & enjoyed toy gifts, Star Wars characters, Princesses, Rudolph, Frosty, Santa, a photo booth, balloon twisting, a life-sized snow globe, and games and activities.
More magical experiences were offered with Hart of the City Photo Booth, balloon twisting from Top Hat Entertainment, games with big prizes, arts and crafts, a life sized snow globe by 3D Softplay, paintable cookies by Baby Bears Bakery, and a candy bar.
Families played games on the lower level of The Armory STL, like air hockey, ping pong, bags, and other lawn games.
Friends’ staff, board members, and volunteers were pleased to witness patient families enjoy this in-person event after three years of drive-through events due to the pandemic. Finding ways to engage with patient families to bring smiles and normalcy to their everyday lives, especially during the holiday season, remains the focus of the organization. ▪
60 tickets offered to families to attend holiday light experiences, Disney on Ice, and Frozen on Ice.
patients & family members received holiday gifts through Adopt-A-Family.
With the help of 26 volunteers and generous donors, holiday wishes came true for 180 parents and kids within 38 patient families. These families received entirely fulfilled wish lists in the 2023 holiday season thanks to the many shoppers, donors, and wrappers in the giving spirit.
Generous donors “adopt” families, sometimes with as many as 6 people to shop for. From toys, gift cards, and special items, to necessities like pots and pans and appliances, everyone got their wishes fulfilled.
Volunteers packed cars with sacks and wagons full of gifts to the families, sometimes driving multiple hours and braving the weather to deliver a holiday to remember. ▪
Patients unable to leave the hospital shopped for their family members with gifts provided by Friends of Kids with Cancer in the hospital setting.
10 elves were spread throughout St. Louis treatment centers with cheerful and fun scenarios for 12 days. Patients receive prizes for finding the elf each day. Over 1,300 prizes given in 2023.
100+ party kits delivered to patients to celebrate the new year with disco ball cups, beads, pins, bracelet-making, noise makers and scratch art.
Enjoy a fun morning for the whole family with breakfast snacks, popcorn, snow cones, bounce houses, games, face painting, & more.
The 5K race is timed through Big River Running Company with prizes for winners in each category. New and experienced runners welcome.

This annual holiday pub crawl is an incredible opportunity to support local charities like Friends while having a blast with family and friends. The event, organized by our young professionals group, Young Friends of Kids with Cancer, was highly attended by St. Louis’ bar hoppers in support of Friends
This year was successful in raising $42,767 with 2,644 attendees representing Friends of Kids with Cancer, coming in second in line of seven other charities.
Each year, the 12 Bars organizers designate a charity with a special color sweatshirt, free with every ticket purchase. This year, those wearing blue sweatshirts showed their support of Friends of Kids with Cancer while bar crawling across St. Louis, drink cozies in hand.
Jamie Ebel, Young Friends board member, former employee of Friends, and long-time supporter, organized our participation in 12 Bars of Charity this year as the committee chair.
Jamie wants to thank the 12 Bars owner, Emily Savage, for her continued support over these many years and excellent event-planning. Emily makes it easy for Young Friends to bring in these large funds in support of children facing pediatric cancer.
A huge thank you to our Young Friends volunteers who spent much time and a long day during sweatshirt pickup: Emily Wurdac, Natalie Condon, Mitch Richardson, Karen Saettele, Christina O’Keefe Czolgosz, Dan Czolgosz, Dylan McCloskey, Austin Malley, Korey Guavin, and Melanie King.

“I don’t need recognition. I get paid in smiles. ”WRITEN BY MORGYN JOHNSON, PROGRAM FACILITATOR
Although he doesn’t need recognition, Bob Bayer is a gem of a volunteer. He is always willing to help with any task, no matter how big or small. Even the oddest of tasks, Bob is always willing to help and happily does whatever is asked of him in support of Friends helped the programming team so many times with preparing for our patient events.
He was especially helpful with this year’s Winter Wonderland party. Bob spent the entire Friday before the event helping make multiple trips to The Armory to make sure we had everything ready to go for our patient families. He also played an amazing “Elf” at our party, assisting Santa and bringing smiles to so many families. Bob is consistently a huge help during our holiday season delivering gifts to families all over the St. Louis area.
Another thing Bob is most known for is his incredible snack shopping. He goes above and beyond and often does snack shopping on the weekends to make sure that one of our treatment centers is always stocked with things for families when they are visiting clinic. Bob is very reliable and I always know I can call him and he will be willing to help with whatever we need taken care of!
“Paying it forward is the greatest thank you I can give. It is my wish to give a special moment to other kids and families, just like the ones we received from our Friends.”
