t’s almost summer and we have a lot to look forward to! Fresh Vancouver is sponsoring and attending some fantastic events in the coming weeks, including the Osoyoos Celebrity Wine Festival June 9th to 12th hosted by Jason Priestly and Stephen Paige in the fabulous Okanagan. We’re also sponsoring the 13th annual Afternoon Tea with Kate Linder & Friends on July 23rd. All you Y&R fans will be thrilled to know that Kate Linder (a.k.a. Esther Valentine) and other Y&R celebs will be hosting high tea followed by an autograph signing, with all proceeds going to the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation. As the sun warms up, let’s remember that while we all need our vitamin D, the sun is the biggest contributing factor to the speed of the aging process. And it’s within our control. Simply by wearing a hat and avoiding peak sun hours, you can limit the damage wrought by UV rays and significantly slow the hands of time. Sun exposure leads not only to sun spots and collagen breakdown, but also to dangerous cancers like melanoma. This edition of Fresh Vancouver includes the inspiring story of Kathy Barnard, a melanoma survivor who has fought numerous battles against the disease and used the lessons she learned along the way to start the Save Your Skin Foundation, offering hope and guidance to late-stage melanoma sufferers. And speaking of inspiring women, our cover story for this issue is none other than Army and Navy President and CEO Jacqui Cohen. Jacqui has established herself as a respected Vancouver business woman and charity maven, and a force to be reckoned with. A week before the 50th annual Army and Navy shoe sale (where we scored some great designer shoes!), she invited my staff and me into her home to discuss the most important things in her life: her business, her charity, and above all, her daughter Kasondra. Here’s to a happy, healthy summer! Shelly Lynn Nellis Editor-In-Chief

s I write this, we are winding up probably the sunniest, warmest day of the year so far. Mr Sun certainly took his time this year, but the minute he arrives, we Vancouverites know to stop complaining. Life is so lovely in the Vancouver summertime, when our scenic vistas are more spectacular than ever. This issue of Fresh contains your summer toolkit for beach readiness: from tattoo removal to body contouring, to swimsuit-ready arms and a complete guide to selftanning creams. Those infamous Vancouver vistas of sparkling ocean with striking mountain backdrops are nowhere so incredible as along that stretch of multimillion-dollar oceanfront homes known as the “Golden Mile,” where an elite few inhabit properties coveted the world over. One of these homes is owned by Jacqui Cohen, Army and Navy President and CEO, originator of the Face the World Foundation, and this issue’s cover story. A well known Vancouver family riddled with problems, the Cohens garnered massive amounts of media attention for many years – much of it negative. Years later, our glowingly positive interview with Jacqui is testament to the strength of her character and the steadfastness of her perseverance. We’re also looking at differing approaches to skincare treatments, including fat grafting and non-invasive skin brightening techniques, acupressure and meditation for healthy skin, plus an enlightening discussion on how to engineer the perfect rhinoplasty. No matter how holistic or aggressive you want your beauty and antiaging regimen to be, we’ve got the information you need to make your personal decisions. After all, life, in the words of Albert Camus, is the sum of all your choices. It’s up to you! Happy summer everyone!

It’s Written All Over

Your Face By Ocean Bloom

F

acial expressions speak volumes about our states of mind. We can cover up most parts of our bodies if we don’t want them to be seen, but our faces are always uncovered. Have you ever looked at someone’s face and thought, “ that person looks stressed out,” or felt that someone seemed angry or unapproachable because of the expression on his or her face? Alternatively, what about, “that person looks simply radiant”?

Our Facial Signals

We often don’t realize the signals we are broadcasting through our facial expressions. Without our awareness, our emotions are exposed. When we are triggered by what’s happening around or inside us, we create habitual physical reactions, which respond to the fluctuations of our emotions and nervous systems. We can be set off by too many thoughts running through the mind, reactions to comments someone has made, and intense concentration when completing physical, mental or emotional tasks. Retelling a difficult story can also bring up dramatic and muscle-straining expressions. Before we know it, deep lines are forming between our eyes and there is pain in the muscles behind them: the beginning of a headache. Remember when we were told as children, “Don’t make that expression because your face might get stuck like that forever”? If we live our lives stressed out, overreacting to every little

thing that happens, it will eventually show on our faces. As we strive to keep our bodies fit and vital through intense exercise, we can also put a lot of extra stress on our facial muscles. It’s ironic that as our bodies become more youthful, our faces can age more quickly. It’s always interesting for me to observe the students that come to my fitness and boot camp classes. When I announce what our workout will be for that session, there is an immediate triggered response to what is being said. It shows up on everyone’s face. As we move through exercises that become increasingly challenging, I often see people contorting their facial muscles, locking their jaws, grinding their teeth and scrunching up their foreheads. Their internal dialogue is revealed by the expressions on their faces.

Relaxing Your Face

Here are some simple steps to relax your body and mind. The results will allow your face to be more peaceful. These relaxation techniques can be performed anywhere, at any time. 1. Either sitting comfortably or lying down, bring awareness to your breathing. Inhale through your nose and exhale through your mouth, keeping the breath smooth and deep. 2. Let your whole body relax as you become aware of the crown of your head. Imagine your hair softening around your scalp.

3. Relax your forehead and the space between your eyes. 4. Let your eyelids get heavy and soften your eyes in the sockets. 5. Unclench your jaw. 6. Soften your tongue in your mouth. 7. Let the skin on your face relax. 8. Keep scanning the facial muscles to find where you may be holding any tension, and release it. 9. Facial massage is a brilliant way to stimulate relaxation for the face and the entire body. You can do this yourself. When we take time to be still, relax our bodies and create some space in our minds, even for two to five minutes a day, we allow our consciousness to drop into a meditative state. We become less reactive to the little things that often trigger us. From this place we can begin to live deliberately, with balance, direction, purpose and peace.

very face tells a thousand stories and Make Up Your Mind: Express Yourself is an advanced guide to illustrating them. The second book in François Nars’ Make Up Your Mind trilogy, the Prêt-à-Porter title focuses on real people wearing NARS. A diverse collection of unique and beautiful individuals, Make Up Your Mind: Express Yourself is a continuation of the original Make Up Your Mind, which has been touted as “the ultimate artistic makeup manual.” The concept for the series was born through the marriage of Nars’ two passions: makeup and photography. The first installment of the series, Make Up Your Mind (2001), featured professional models and demonstrated the

transformation that occurred through varied application of NARS makeup. Identical photos were taken before and after makeup application with a transparent overlay following the “after” photo, detailing the techniques and products used to achieve the results. Make Up Your Mind: Express Yourself follows suit, but the subjects range in age from 16 to 64, encompassing an extensive variety of ethnicities and lifestyles. It is divided into three chapters or stages of makeup wear: “Play” encourages experimentation with colour and texture; “Perfect” provides simple techniques for a beautiful finished face; and ”Polish” discloses methods to adapt application for a look that transcends time. Beginning each look with a “blank canvas,” the objec-

tive creation of each image enhances individual beauty and inspires creative expression. As with all NARS campaigns to date, Make Up Your Mind: Express Yourself was conceived under the direction of and photographed by François Nars. Launching in May 2011 and available exclusively at Holt Renfrew, this 273page book includes handwritten notes of advice from François himself, face charts, step-by-step instructions and subject testimonials, making it a wealth of information for every beautiful face. Writer/actor Danielle Kremeniuk has been featured in numerous west coast publications and productions. She is currently hosting FMA Entertainment Weekly, and developing her own television series.

Modern Dentistry & Healthy Living:

From Treatment to Transformation By Dr Kelvin Mah

W

hen describing the extraordinary benefits of modern dentistry to new and prospective patients, I find it helpful to highlight the difference between treatment and transformation. That’s because in the past, dentistry was very much about the treatment end of things. That is, dentists focused on what needed to be done – whether that was a crown, a filling, a bridge, etc. To be frank, Dr. Kelvin Mah I can completely understand why so many patients “tuned out” of these kinds of discussions and found them pretty uninspiring. After all, there isn’t much to get excited about when your dentist is explaining how a cavity is filled, or showing you photos of what your gums look like from the inside! Today, things are very different – and profoundly better! That’s because modern dentistry goes beyond the treatment end of things, and skilled artisan dentists can emphasize its transformative impact. That is, we can highlight for our patients the incredible lifestyle benefits that patients can look forward to after they leave the dentist’s chair – benefits that go far beyond improved oral health, and embrace everything from self-esteem to career success, to improved relationships and more. In this light, you could say that modern dentistry is a catalyst for positive change that takes smiles and lives to the next level.

The Next Level for Nick

Speaking of taking lives to the next level, allow me to introduce you to my patient, Nick. Nick’s body of work (no pun intended!) is similar to mine in many ways, because while I aim to transform lives through modern dentistry, he focuses on transforming lives as a professional BCRPA Certified Personal Trainer. As Nick explained to me when we first met, a brilliant smile in the

fitness industry goes a long way towards making the right impression and standing out from the crowd – which is quite important given that a growing number of his clients are starting to enter competitions, and want an elite personal trainer who has impeccable health on every level. Furthermore, while he’s a truly modest and grounded person, Nick is aware that his clients look up to him as a role model who has achieved an enviable level of health, fitness, well being, inner strength and overall physical appearance. A big part of that complete picture is having a dazzling white smile – and that’s the piece Nick was searching for. And as it turns out, Nick’s search was a lengthy one. As a professional with high standards, he wasn’t willing to settle for just any dentist to help transform his smile, nor would he give a second look to the drugstore whitening products that he compared to the calorie-filled and additiveladen “protein bars” that, unfortunately, are found everywhere in the fitness world, and are often worse for health than chocolate bars! For Nick, a commitment to health is also a commitment to being informed and carefully choosing customized products and services that align with his healthy lifestyle and high expectations. Fortunately, Nick’s search brought him to me and Smile City Square Dental. At our first meeting, I spent quality time getting to know Nick as a person, and learning about his concerns, goals and aspirations. He said that he wanted a whiter, brighter and more confidence-inspiring smile that would impress his clients and improve his quality of life. He also mentioned that he wanted to see results rapidly, because of his very busy schedule and a slate of upcoming competitions. And most important, he wanted a solution that would look natural and enhance his overall bodybuilder physique and skin tone – and not look fake or phony. “In many ways, how I look is my brand,” Nick told me. “If my smile looks artificial, then my clients – consciously or unconsciously – will take that into consideration, and may choose another trainer.” Taking all of this into consideration, and noting that Nick had areas of sensitivity in his gums and an uneven lustre across his visible teeth, I presented him with a variety of options, and carefully explained the benefits and process of each one. Not surprisingly, Nick selected the solution that I also felt was the best one for him: Zoom! in-office whitening.

Zooming to Results

With Zoom!, Nick would benefit from rapid whitening in just an hour, which was ideal given his very busy schedule. Plus, I could carefully adjust the placement of the whitening mix to bring his teeth to a consistent lustre, and harmonize the brightness with his overall skin tone and features so that it would look natural. And on the sensitivity front, I could

After

selectively shield sensitive areas with protective gel and prevent any pain or discomfort. Now that he was informed, inspired and ready to take his smile to the next level, Nick scheduled his appointment. After customizing the setup and protocol to match Nick’s unique needs and sensitivity, I carefully calibrated the exposure time, performed the Zoom! in-office whitening treatment, and an hour later the transformation was complete! Or rather, I could say that Nick’s transformation was just beginning – because, as you can see from Nick’s photos and read in the following words, his transformative journey towards a better smile and a better life is just getting started! “Having my teeth whitened allows me to feel more confident in myself and my teaching skills while interacting with clients. Not having to worry about my teeth being white allows me to put all of my focus and energy towards each individual client throughout each training session. As a Certified Personal Fitness Trainer, I understand the importance of working with a qualified professional when it comes to health and well-being. After having my teeth whitened by Dr. Mah, I wouldn’t change a thing. To receive the best results you need to work with the best professionals – and that’s exactly what Dr. Mah is: the very best. Thank you Dr. Mah! You’ve improved my quality of life and I couldn’t be happier.” Nick Cosgrove, President, Forever Fit www.foreverfitworkout.com To these kind words, all I can respond with is: Thank you, Nick, for giving me the opportunity to help you experience the wonderful benefits of modern dentistry. As a renowned health and fitness leader, you’re an inspiration to everyone who wants to benefit from the connection between oral health, an attractive smile, and a better life. Enjoy your dazzlingly white, custom-made and natural-looking Smile City Square Dental smile!

the top Non-Invasive Ways to Tighten and Brighten Your Skin By Amanda Biesel

O

ur skin begins the aging process in our twenties when the skin’s ability to retain water declines and oxygen levels reduce. We see our skin very gradually lose its radiant glow. In our late twenties and early thirties, our skin starts to produce less collagen, which leads to the formation of fine lines, some due to dehydration, and increased pore size. At this age, starting a skincare program to support skin health and reduce the acceleration and signs of aging is very important. Your skin health program should consist of daily skin products and monthly or bimonthly skin boosting treatments. Your twenties and early thirties are primarily a time of preventive skincare and what you do during these years can positively or negatively affect the health of your skin and the rate at which it ages. In our forties, skincare is preventive and corrective; this is a time when we notice more dehydration and accentuated appearance of fine lines, wrinkles and sun spots. There are effective anti-aging treatments and products that can be used to address existing signs of aging as well as prevent further deterioration. In our fifties, fine lines and wrinkles can become more prominent and can develop into folds. This is a time when estrogen is decreasing, resulting in reduced elasticity and plumpness of the skin. Your skin tone can become more uneven and jowls can begin to develop. Luckily, age is not the only determining factor. Lifestyle, nutrition, stress, skincare, sun protection and genetics are key factors that play a role in the speed at which our skin will age. Look for a good quality physical sunscreen that uses zinc oxide and or titanium dioxide and avoid the chemical sunscreens. The sooner we start taking care of our skin, the better the results, the healthier and more long-living our skin will be, and the less money will be needed for more invasive procedures down the road. Below are the top five ways to keep your skin looking tight, bright and healthy.

1. Skin Tyte

Skin Tyte is an advanced light energy system that delivers infrared heat to the deeper layer of the skin where the collagen resides. Once the heat is delivered, it contracts existing collagen for a tightening effect, while also stimulating the formation of fibroblasts that will create more collagen. The Skin Tyte treatment is safe for all skin types. Most individuals require a series of two to six sessions depending on age and collagen loss. The best part is that there is no downtime and you can resume normal activities immediately after treatment. Visible results can be immediate, but your skin will achieve the desired optimal benefits gradually over two to three months, when new collagen has formed. We highly recommend beginning these treatments in your thirties when collagen is gradually declining, because you will obtain maximum results and stop

14

aging in its tracks. Great results are still obtained in your forties and fifties.

2. Vitamin A Infusion Peel

The Vitamin A Infusion Peel is a one-of-a-kind peel that repairs and remodels your skin. It works at a deeper layer where the collagen and elastin reside, making it a powerful anti-aging treatment, but it is also great for acne, rosacea and hyperpigmentation. It boosts the cell turnover rate resulting in a healthier, more youthful complexion. It is extremely safe and tolerated by all skin types. We see mild to moderate exfoliation two to three days after the peel, which usually lasts for another two to three days. The peel is gentle but the results are significant! Here’s what you can expect from a Vitamin A Infusion Peel: • Increase fibroblast activity (fibroblast cells are what create collagen and elastin) • Increase capillary flow to help increase food supply to the dermis and thicken the dermis • Calm acne and rosacea symptoms • Lift hyperpigmentation • Reduce fine lines and improve skin tone and elasticity • Normalize oil production

3. Chemical and Enzyme Peels

A chemical peel is a technique that involves the application of a variety of chemical solutions to remove the damaged outer layers of dead skin cells from the skin’s surface. It is extremely beneficial for many skin conditions and the aging face. By removing the build-up of dead skin cells and stimulating the regenerative process, you will notice marked improvements in the formation of wrinkles and fine lines, texture and tone of the skin and hydration. You’ll also see reduced pore size, clearing of blemishes, more balanced oil production and an overall healthier skin appearance. Some exciting advancements in chemical peels now include the blending of active natural ingredients with a variety of enzymes and acids, which allows peels to be customized to specific skin needs and concerns. These treatments can really transform the look and health of the skin. They range from very mild peeling to deeper peeling depending on your preference and skin’s needs. Lactic acid is a beautiful peel that will polish and brighten up the skin by removing the dead layer on top. An added benefit is that there is no downtime or peeling.

4. Skin Needling and Needle Dermabrasion

Skin needling (roller) and needle dermabrasion (tattoo gun) are non-invasive, non- onjectable skin rejuvenation treatments that target a diverse range of skin concerns. This procedure uses a roller with microscopic

Vancouver Issue | fresh vancouver Issue 72

needles or an inkless tattoo gun to target specific lines, wrinkles or scars, cellulite, and stretch marks. It is derived from ancient acupuncture techniques and has minimal risk and long-term results. As the needles are rolled over the skin, tiny punctures are created within the epidermis and dermis that encourage the skin’s own natural healing response. There is minimal downtime and discomfort; the treatment is carried out using topical numbing cream. Home treatment rollers are also available for use on a weekly basis. These have much shorter needles which only microscopically break the surface of the skin. When used with your regular skincare routine, this will assist with absorption of your serums. The homecare roller will also help break up the dead layer of your skin; the exfoliating effect helps prevent congestion from dead skin build-up and promotes vibrant skin. Clinical skin needling and needle dermabrasion are used to: • Stimulate the production of collagen • Reduce the appearance of wrinkles, pigmentation and sun damage • Treat acne scars and chicken pock scars • Reduce the appearance of scarring, stretch marks and cellulite • Reduce the appearance of enlarged pores

4. Cosmetic Acupuncture

Cosmetic acupuncture is the ultimate anti-aging treatment because it balances our internal systems while simultaneously boosting the health and appearance of the skin. It is a non-surgical procedure that will help rejuvenate and revitalize your whole body. It will improve blood and energy circulation, nourish your skin and increase collagen production to reduce the appearance of fine lines, wrinkles, sagging and dull skin.

5. Medi-Facials

A medi-facial is a results-driven treatment that uses concentrated clinical-grade, natural ingredients that replenish and repair the skin. These ingredients include enzymes, acids, and vitamins, plus potent antioxidants. Medi-facials are great for all skin types and skin conditions because they are custom blended at the time of treatment. The infusion of nutrients, acids, and enzymes results in a deep cleaning and nutrient-rich feeding of the skin, and finally a smooth polishing, leaving skin looking refreshed, radiant and healthy. Facing the Wor ld

Jacqui Cohen Style By Liberty Craig

S

he has been called many things, but down-to-earth isn’t typically among them. Imagine my surprise when Jacqui Cohen, President and CEO of Army and Navy, kicked off her (fabulous) shoes and settled into her über-comfortable couch, snuggled under a cozy blanket, to discuss her life and the trials of one of Vancouver’s most notorious families. Referred to as the “Kennedys of the 70s,” the Cohen’s story is a familiar tale: the hardwon riches of a self-made man (Grandpa Sam Cohen, founder of A&N); the effects of said riches on future generations (fast cars, drugs, and the “high life”); and the seemingly inevitable tragedies that are too often a part of this story. Jacqui’s father had multiple sclerosis and spent much of his life in a wheelchair, which left Jacqui’s brother as Grandpa Sam’s named successor. But Jacqui’s brother and sister both died tragically in their twenties, in accidents involving drugs and fast cars, respectively. There were trust funds, family politics, lawsuits. It took many years, but at long last Jacqui Cohen rose phoenix-like from these ashes to finally claim her rightful spot as head of Army and Navy. She was told she couldn’t do it, was told to sell it. She was told the location of the flagship store, in the downtown eastside, was going to pot and she should get out while she could. But Jacqui Cohen is no shrinking violet.

With perseverance, patience and plenty of personality, she stuck it out – and resolutely succeeded. Years later, Jacqui is a well-respected business woman, while her Face the World Foundation has contributed over $6 million to causes across Greater Vancouver. Fresh Vancouver sat down with Jacqui in her $20 million waterfront home to discuss what life beyond the gala events and media sensationalism is really like.

Fresh Vancouver (FV): Tell us about your grandfather Sam Cohen, who founded Army and Navy in 1919. Jacqui: He was a force! He died when I was 13,

so he didn’t teach me the business, but I thank God every day that I think I’ve got some of his business sense. He was an important figure in my life, but I really came to understand later in life how smart he was.

FV: When you took control of Army and

Navy in 1998, did you think you would run it yourself?

Jacqui: I realized that I wanted to continue

Grandpa Sam’s legacy: bargains are our business. In order to maintain the integrity of the brand, I had to be the decision-maker. Once I

got into it, I understood it was grown-up time, and I had to do it better than anybody else. I figured if anybody was going to make mistakes it should be me. And I’ve made several.

FV: There were many naysayers at that time. How much did they bother you? Jacqui: I love being underestimated. It motivates me. To this day, I love that people still think that I’m a screw-up somehow. I’ve lived with naysayers all my life, and we all like to say we don’t care what people think, but we all do. I’m proud that I have earned respect in the business community. Most of all, I know my family up above is proud to have the Cohen legacy still continuing. That’s really what motivates me. FV: What are your greatest business strengths? Jacqui: Patience and perseverance. I don’t

make hasty decisions – everything that I was lucky enough to get, I’ve still got. We’ve been in business for 92 years, and it still requires constant tweaking. You have to hone your craft, pay your dues. Some people win the lottery; for others, it’s perseverance.

FV: You’re known as an advocate for the downtown eastside, home of your flagship store. Do

in there and make it. People questioned me during the tent city days, but I’ve come through it and it’s very rewarding that we are still able to serve the welfare recipients and help the homeless, as well as attract women from West Van and Shaughnessy. I walk down the street there, and it’s my ‘hood!

Jacqui: The shoe sale is possible because of the

FV: Your Face the World Foundation has disbursed millions of dollars to various charities throughout greater Vancouver over the past 21 years. What is your focus this year? Jacqui: When Face the World started, we supported abused women, battered children, the hungry and the homeless. This year, we made the decision to tackle homelessness in Vancouver. We’ve pledged half a million dollars to homelessness, through the “StreetToHome” program. We raise over a million dollars at each event, and all the money stays local. The event is held in my home and people have fun, and it makes Vancouver a better place.

FV: You obviously possess a serious flair for fashion!

lot and I love the rain. People in Vancouver always complain about the rain, but it’s all about moisture on your skin. And I don’t mind saying that being full-figured and having a fuller face helps your skin look good. I take really good care of my skin, but I use nothing fancy – for me it’s all about Linacare.

FV: What do you do for exercise? Jacqui: I love yoga. I also work out with my trainer three times a week. My dog is a big asset because she looks at me like, “why aren’t we walking?” I don’t like to do flat walks so we drive to Spanish Banks and walk up those huge hills. I’m very fit, but I’m an indulger – I like to eat! FV: With your successful business, your gala

Jacqui: This is who I am: I’m a single work-

ing mother on the downtown eastside. If people want to see me as glamorous, that’s fine. But the truth is, I live alone, I’m a mother, and I work on the downtown eastside. The fact that I get to come home to this [gestures to her surroundings] or get glamorous when I want to is one thing, but that is what I really am. FV: You come from a family legacy of tragedy, drug use, and family politics – all in the public eye. How have you turned that around to become the accomplished woman you are today?

Jacqui: I’ve never been more content with

who Jacqui Cohen is. There have been so many headlines about the tragedies and the drug use, but the need to give back has been engrained in us for four generations. I don’t know that I’ve changed much; I think I’ve just matured, and I thank God that I’m not trying to do in my fifties what I tried to do in my twenties. It gives you a kind of tranquility to know that you don’t have to be out there chasing after everything. There’s always going to be a bigger yacht, a bigger diamond. There will always be younger women. And I don’t worry about what’s going to happen in the future because I have my daughter to carry on the Cohen legacy. Maybe that’s why I’m so content.

Demystifying

Self Tanners By Julie Brown

The Products

Having used plenty of the self tanners on the market today, from luxury to no-name brands, I have my favourites based on a few criteria: the speed of application, the length of drying time, the smell as it develops (which can be funky) and, of course, the overall colour result. Self tanners come in creams, gels and now sprays. There are also daily body moisturizing lotions with self tanners in them to give moisture and gradually add colour. The self tanners I recommend for a gentle tanned look are: Clarins Self Tanning Cream, Self Tanning Mousse, Self Tanning Milk SPF 6, and Self Tanning Instant Gel (Clarins is by far the best-smelling of the bunch). The ones I recommend for deeper colour are: L’Oréal Sublime Bronze Sun Splash Self Tanning Gel, Sublime Bronze Self Tanning Lotion, and Sublime Bronze Self Tanning Mist, which is like an airbrush spray application: no blending, rubbing in, or drying time – simply divine! For the most subtle of hues, the daily moisturizers I recommend are: Jergens Natural Glow Daily Moisturizer and L’Oréal Sublime Glow Daily Skin Tone Enhancer. Some creams and gels come with a bronze tint in them. This front loads temporary colour onto your skin prior to the tanner developing. It’s not really a necessary feature unless you’re extremely pushed for time, as I find it can be left behind on clothes and furniture.

The Application

If I am using a cream or gel, I prefer to apply it just before bed. I find it less desirable to feel lathered in cream in my day clothes and, as mentioned, sometimes the scent may be bothersome until showered off. So, it makes sense to do it at night, and wake up beautifully bronzed. If I am using the spray, I use it any time of day. For the most believable colour and longevity of the tanned look, I apply the self tanner once a week, with a daily dose of the moisturizer. To avoid making your tan look like it came from a bottle, be very light handed in the hand and foot areas, wiping off any excess with a towelette or wet face cloth. Self tanner will adhere strongly and develop darker in areas of the skin that are rough or dry, which brings me to another important step: periodically exfoliate the skin prior to applying. Make sure to wash your hands thoroughly after using a cream or gel, as there is nothing goddess-like about tanned palms! Now you are ready to show off your golden glow, and no one has to know your gams (and the rest of you) didn’t spend weeks on a beach in a tropical paradise, working on that tan.

I

f you are like the rest of us, the much-anticipated shorts and flip-flops weather cannot come soon enough. What is not so appealing, however, is that first peek of pale winter skin. Even when sunny weather arrives, who has the time to run to the beach at its first glimpse to subdue this pasty hue? Besides, we all know the dangers of basking in the sun or tanning beds; yet that tawny, healthy glow is still desirable. What is a girl to do? This is where self tanning comes in. A science unto itself, it requires a little know-how to get it looking flawless and believable.

The Bikini Season

“Quick Fix” Body contouring is not a weight loss program, so if you feel that your general bathing suit malaise has to do with your size, then this solution may not be for you. But if you just

ummertime. That sultry, sun-lazy season that we enjoy like no other as we sink into the warmth of a deck chair, the cool of the pool, the beauty of the beach. Oh yes, and the anxiety of a bathing suit. If you’re like most women, the idea of bathing suit season is a montage of the most mixed emotions. Do we love the kiss of the sun on our skin? Of course. Do we like exposing our bodies in public to receive that kiss? Not so much. Even women who are fit and generally pleased with their bodies often have a complaint about their figures; something that might be fine covered in clothing but that makes them uncomfortable in a bathing suit. Others dream of fitness makeovers that will transform them from couch potato to beach bombshell in a matter of weeks to prepare for beach season. But when the calendar is running out of weeks remaining, hitting the gym will build your confidence more than anything else. A great go-to solution for a beach-ready body, especially when time is of the essence, is body contouring. The science of body contouring has progressed by leaps and bounds in the past decade, and technologies long used in Europe have finally crossed the ocean for use in North America. Unlike any form of exercise, body contouring is the only non-invasive program capable of spot reduction. Don’t like your outer thighs? Months of cardio, combined with a strict diet and overall weight loss, will make a difference. Or, you could specifically target your outer thigh area with a body contouring technology designed to slim the specific area. It’s a simple, painless procedure that uses laser technology to literally flush fat from your body. The lasers perforate fat cells to allow contents of the cells to be dumped into the lymphatic system where they are flushed out of the body simply by drinking water and getting a bit of exercise. There is no risk, no recovery time, and no discomfort. Typically, patients will receive between three and ten treatments to achieve the desired results, and can expect to lose approximately half an inch per session. Targeted areas usually include hips, thighs, belly, underarms, love handles and male breasts, but may also be useful in other areas. Speak to a qualified practitioner to learn more.

Advancements

in Feminine Hygiene

By Sophia Davidson

Q

uestion: How much time do you spend thinking about your feminine hygiene products? The answer is probably next to none. At this point in our lives, we’re accustomed to simply picking up the same old products whenever we run out. We rarely switch brands, or even think about what may have changed in the world of feminine hygiene.

How W ell Padded A re You

The reality is that the science of absorption materials has progressed. If you have young children or grandchildren, then you know that diaper technology isn’t what it used to be. Thankfully, women have not been left behind in these advancements. Bulky, uncomfortable, leak-prone sani-

tary napkins are finally a thing of the past – though they are still available on drugstore shelves for all those women who rarely rethink their product choices! Today’s sanitary napkins are not only designed to be more effective; they can even be beneficial to your health. At literally no more than a millimetre in thickness, today’s cuttingedge sanitary napkins boast a “barely there” presence while at the same time are capable of absorbing twice the liquid of those unwieldy products of the past. That in itself is reason enough to switch from the low-tech devices of old to the newest incarnations of the sanitary napkin. But even more impressive are key health ingredients now included to help combat problems associated with menstruation.

Health and Hygiene

The latest technology in sanitary napkins far exceeds mere absorption. Two vital components of today’s feminine hygiene products are tourmaline and silver. Let’s look at each in detail. Tourmaline: This semi-precious stone is a mineral compound that contains a number of elements with health benefits. When tourmaline comes into contact with moisture, it begins to emit far-infrared rays and negative oxygen ions. The far-infrared rays ionize water molecules in our blood cells, thereby helping to improve circulation and oxygen levels. The ionization also helps eliminate toxins and inhibit bacterial growth. The end result of far-infrared ray activity is pain relief, cellular repair and pH balance. It also acts as an odour neutralizer and an anti-inflammatory. Meanwhile, the negative ions emitted by tourmaline also help balance pH levels while relieving stress, strengthening the immune system, fighting depression and boosting energy levels. Nano-silver: Nanoparticles of silver act as a powerful anti-bacterial agent that is non-toxic to human cells. Used in sanitary napkins, nanosilver can remove almost 100 percent of odour-causing bacteria as well as candida albicans, the yeast that habitually becomes over-produced in many women. This element is the highly effective, non-synthetic answer to odour control in sanitary products. Put away the archaic feminine hygiene products you grew up with, ladies! The choices today are more streamlined and more effective, and best of all, they contribute to your good health.

The Ultimate Skin Rejuvenation Treatment By Amy Chalmers

F

or over a decade, industry leaders in Australia, Europe and Asia have been using a simple new treatment to get the kinds of results that were previously available only from light- and laser-based modalities. The treatment is called skin needling, and it’s fast becoming a preferred treatment option of leading physicians and skin practitioners the world over.

What Is Skin Needling?

Skin needling or “collagen induction therapy” involves the process of using a sterile roller comprised of a series of tiny needles to puncture the skin, not unlike cosmetic acupuncture. The device is rolled over the face or body to create microscopic channels deep into the dermis. The body senses these tiny channels and responds by launching a wound healing cascade, localized to the treatment area, which results in a burst of collagen and elastin production as well as the release of powerful growth factors. This increase in natural collagen results in skin tightening, reduction of lines and wrinkles and remodelling of scar tissue. Skin needling produces dramatic collagen increases even in peri- and post-menopausal women for whom collagen production has drastically slowed down. Skin needling works with the skin’s natural healing process by stimulating the release of growth factors (substances that cause the cells to grow and divide) and cytokines (chemical messengers between cells). These processes are responsible for the regulation of a variety of cellular activities such as cell division, new cell and blood vessel growth, including collagen and elastin production and distribution. These natural substances work together to regulate cell function and optimize skin health.

What Can Skin Needling Treat?

Studies show that skin needling normalizes and restores cell function to damaged melanocytes (pigment cells), keratinocytes (epidermal cells) and fibroblast cells (dermal cells). It is, therefore, a very effective treatment solution for stubborn skin conditions such as melasma, hyperpigmentation, rosacea, UV damage, hair loss and stretch marks. What’s more, skin needling treats all these conditions simultaneously. No other treatment modality can claim the same. Skin needling can be used to treat all areas of the face and body and is especially effective at targeting saggy skin around the knees, thighs, stomach and upper arms. It is a preferred method of treatment for stubborn wrinkles around the eyes, lips and forehead.

Why Choose Skin Needling?

The ideal rejuvenation treatment is one that could preserve the epidermis

while promoting an increase in normal collagen and elastin formation in the dermis. Finding a treatment to deliver on this promise remains the holy grail of skin rejuvenation. Options such as IPL and laser treatments can cause burning of the superficial layer of the skin (epidermis), resulting in redness, swelling, discomfort and downtime. Recovery can last six weeks or more. Blood vessels can be affected by photorejuvenation and stem cells may be affected by laser hair removal. Post treatment, these ablative modalities require long-term avoidance of sun, which makes them an unsuitable summer treatment option for most people. Laser treatments may also carry the risk of unintended burns, pigmentation problems, coagulated vessels, abnormal collagen production, and the undesirable loss of connective tissue. Skin needling, on the other hand, brings us much closer to the ideal rejuvenation method. Skin needling has minimal downtime because it leaves the epidermal layer intact. It is low-risk, sun compatible and virtually painfree. A topical anaesthetic is used to numb the skin prior to treatment. Recovery usually consists of one to three days of mild redness and three to five days of a dry, tight feeling. Frequent use of moisturizers helps alleviate this feeling and speeds the healing process.

Treatment and Results

Skin needling can be safely performed on all skin types and is of particular value to those with darker skin, as there is no risk of PIHP (post inflammatory hyperpigmentation). This is a major distinguishing safety feature between skin needling and ablative procedures. A typical treatment series requires four to six sessions, with treatments spaced four to 12 weeks apart. Skin needling typically provides a 30 to 90 percent improvement in the condition being treated. Results are both long-term (new collagen lasts five to ten years) and accumulative, so additional treatments will net additional results. It is also a more affordable treatment option, usually coming in at about one-third the cost of ablative laser treatments. Specialized training is required to perform skin needling in a safe and effective manner. It should be performed only by trained practitioners including doctors, cosmetic nurses, and qualified cosmetic dermal therapists. Amy Chalmers is an internationally qualified cosmetic dermal therapist and the founder of Natural Skin Solutions in downtown Vancouver. She specializes in offering powerful and effective alternatives to ablative cosmetic procedures. Amy spent several years as an international trainer for industry professionals and an advisor on cosmeceuticals, comprehensive consultations and advanced skin care techniques. Nicole: Being socially conscious is about being mindful of the planet and everyone that lives on it. We use sustainable fabrics in our clothing, like organic cotton, organic wool, linen, tencel, modal, silk and recycled PET. We also use ethical production practices. We do the best we can in everything we do to create a positive impact. FV: What kind of woman is a Nicole Bridger woman? Nicole: She is a real woman who lives a busy life, but still likes to look good and feel beautiful. She is conscious of the environment, so she buys organic when she can, but she’s not unrealistic about it. FV: Tell us about the “I Am Love” labels sewn into your clothing. Nicole: It’s a reminder to speak kindly to yourself and to others, to come from a place of love in all that you do and help spread positivity. FV: What’s your favourite outfit for summer? Nicole: I love the surrender dress. Wear it as a sundress or out for dinner. You look sexy but feel so comfortable. FV: What does fashion mean to you? Nicole: Fashion is about wearing what makes you feel more in touch with who you truly are. You will feel better and have more to give to your day and those around you.

In Search of Hair Straighteners That Work By Danielle Kremeniuk

W

ith fourteen for me came wayward ringlets. Embarking on a decade of image experimentation, this couldn’t have happened at a worse time. Going through a phase where we felt the need to rebel against everything, my friend and I would stare at ourselves in the mirror and debate what could be done to straighten our locks. My friend’s father overheard us one day, and offered some advice. When he was a child, his older sisters would each pay him a quarter to iron their hair. We both agreed it was the perfect solution – immediately accessible, affordable and parentally sanctioned. Excited about our solution, we did not take the time to consider some of the potential ramifications of this procedure. As well, we had recently subjected our dark manes to a peroxide-based spray that promised to give us golden highlights in the sun… or with a hairdryer. Needless to say, our patchy, parched tresses didn’t take well to the extreme heat of the iron. Upon completion our hair was feebly intact, closely resembling straw, and residue hairspray had melted on the iron, which we later had to replace with our allowances. Several months and deep conditions later I was allowed to buy a flat iron from the drugstore for occasional use. Eventually my mother bought me a professional one. Then I moved to Vancouver and realized that even my professional straightener did not wield the power that it had in the arid prairies. I decided to take it to the next level, only to meet with bad experiences in chemical straightening treatments. I conceded defeat and learned to love my curls.

Seeking Prairie Flats

Now, years later, my personal style more refined and reckless beauty treatments behind

me, I continue to long for straight hair. With all the talented artists in Vancouver it isn’t difficult to become educated, but I consider myself incredibly fortunate to have all of my questions answered by Chad Taylor, co-owner of Moods Hair Salon (moodshairsalon.com). Regularly called on as a “hair expert” by the Globe and Mail, Fashion Magazine and the Vancouver Sun, Chad is a recent winner of the 2011 Canadian Hairstylist of the Year award at the Toronto Mirror Awards. Chad gave great accolades to a straightening treatment called KeraStraight. It’s a Brazilian keratin treatment (keratin being the key structural component in hair) that is 100 percent formaldehyde and aldehyde free, which makes it gentle on hair and safe to use while pregnant or breast feeding. Chad said that KeraStraight can be used on any texture of hair for smooth, healthy, shiny hair. It is safe to use on damaged hair–the duller and frizzier the hair, the more dramatic the results will be. As well, hair can be coloured up to two days prior or two days after the treatment, but Chad recommends having the colour done after as the results of the colour may lighten slightly. When the treatment is complete, the hair can be shampooed at any time using a shampoo that is sulphate-free and sodium chloride free. Tying the hair in a ponytail right after the treatment will not produce the adverse results seen with other smoothing systems. The results will last three to four months following the treatment as long as proper post-treatment products are used. It can be done more frequently without damage to the hair. With KeraStraight, there is no permanent chemical change in the hair. The keratin protein slowly comes out of the hair so there is no regrowth area with chemi-

cal damage on the ends. In addition to having the ability to straighten almost all hair types, the stylist can adjust the process technique to maintain to curl, but still smooth the frizz and give shine to the hair. Chad told me the words that every curly haired gal longs to hear: “It’s great in humidity, too!”

You Flatter Me

Consulting the KeraStraight website (kerastraight.ca), I found a step-by-step description of what to expect from the appointment. The hair is washed with a pretreatment shampoo to soften and open up the hair shaft; then dried on medium heat until the moisture is gone. The straightening treatment is then applied to the hair in small sections, keeping close to but not on the roots, and evenly to the ends. The treatment is applied until hair is thoroughly dampened; development time isn’t usually necessary unless hair is virgin or very curly. Hair is dried again completely on medium heat; then locked in using straightening irons set at 210 degrees. Once ironed completely, the hair is given quick blast of cool air before washing with the maintenance shampoo. Now used around the world, this evolution of beauty culture allows our curls to relax while keeping our ends from doing the splits. More important, it frees up precious time that would otherwise be relegated to personal maintenance, and keeps us looking great while dancing all-night or walking in the rain. Writer/actor Danielle Kremeniuk has been featured in numerous west coast publications and productions. She is currently hosting FMA Entertainment Weekly, and developing her own television series. “Step by Step.” KeraStraight. n.d. May 12,2011

The Benefits of

Fat Grafting

By Dr. Kimit Rai

ge appears on our faces in the form of frown lines, drooping eyebrows and wrinkles. Jowls appear along the chin, deep lines are etched in our nasolabial folds and the cheeks begin to flatten and deflate. The skin itself has larger pores and elasticity is lost; hence, the quality of the skin also deteriorates. To counteract this state of decay, we use fillers and skincare products to help rejuvenate the face and give it a more youthful look. Acid peels, retinoic acid, ascorbic acid and other supplemented materials can provide anti-aging benefits to the skin. But there is another interesting option these days: fat injections, which have become a popular method of creating the desired fullness in different areas of the face.

Improvements in Fat Grafting

Fat grafting has been used in facial augmentation for many years, but the techniques have improved over the last few years. Fat grafts are traditionally harvested from the abdominal wall or the posterior hips where excessive fat is present. The fat is collected in a syringe, the serum

is removed and the fat is then injected into the various areas of the face to achieve the desired augmentation. Fat grafts are particularly useful in the cheeks, nasolabial folds, marionette lines and the chin and lips. The technique is often used during facelift procedures to achieve the desired fullness and improve not only appearance but also the quality of the skin. The harvested fat contains stem cells, which help to improve skin quality while also improving the facial appearance. Some irregularities may be present after fat grafts, since fat grafts do not survive one hundred percent. During surgical improvement to achieve a youthful face, over-correction is done with the knowledge that some amount of fat repositioned in the face will disappear. It is a controlled procedure that must be undertaken by a qualified plastic surgeon.

skin, change of lifestyle, and fillers that provided controlled augmentation. Fat grafts are used for facial augmentation but, unlike injectables, the outcome is harder to predict and requires significant follow-up. A facial fat graft is a longer procedure and involves some swelling and bruising that may require one or two days’ absence from work for recovery. Where injectables can be done in the office with very little downtime, fat grafting is an operation in which general or local anesthetic is used. Fat grafting is a significant surgical procedure for improving both facial appearance and skin quality, and may be done as part of a larger cosmetic procedure or on its own to rejuvenate the face.

e’ve all done things we regret in life, and more often than not, we learn to live with them. But what about those regrets that seem a little more... permanent? For example, suppose you thought it would be wildly romantic to tattoo the name “Mark” over your left buttock in your twenties. Suppose you and Mark broke up. Suppose your next boyfriend didn’t believe you at all when you said that “mark” was just a cute little pun on tattooing. And it’s realistic to expect that, by now, that tattoo is not only regrettable in name, but is no longer looking as cute as you once thought it did, either. Tattoos tend to fade over time. Colours lose their intensity and blacks fade to blues and greys. As our skin stretches and sags, so too does the tattoo. For women who have had pregnancies, tattoos on the lower back, hips and especially the abdomen can be badly affected. Any substantial weight gain or loss or change in skin texture (i.e., aging) can have a dramatic affect on the appearance of your tattoo. Until recently, the only effective methods of tattoo removal involved plastic surgery or mul-

tiple laser treatments, which were extremely painful and expensive and often left substantial scarring in place of the tattoo. Thankfully, a new methodology has become available that eliminates tattoos in a couple of treatments for all but the most stubborn cases. The treatment is called EliminInk, and it’s a revolutionary method of ink extraction developed to remove tattoos easily, effectively and permanently. There are many benefits to using EliminInk over other methods of tattoo removal. The EliminInk tattoo removal treatment is painless and fast. In most cases, only two or three treatments of EliminInk are required to completely remove the unwanted tattoo, meaning fewer sessions to obtain satisfactory results. Aftercare is simple and requires only that the patients follow a short set of instructions. Choose your technician carefully by considering his or her training, experience, and examples of previous work. Check for licensing, certifications and liability insurance, and ask for references from previous patients. This summer, reveal your arms, ankles and belly with confidence. Walk into that boardroom without wearing your youthful regrets on your shoulder. Go dancing with your husband without another man’s name on your hip. You can have a clean slate!

Cornia Paris is the founder of Natural Line Design and has made the application of permanent cosmetics and removal of tattoos with EliminInk her specialty; with the help of her nearly 20 years of experience in the dental profession in which she gained an extensive knowledge of the facial anatomy and experience working in small spaces with flawless attention to detail. Kathy Ba rna rd:

The Woman Behind

the Save Your Skin Foundation

I

By Liberty Craig

n 2002, Kathy Barnard noticed a lump on her left elbow. A baseball player and admitted “sun worshipper,” Kathy spent a great deal of time outdoors. Off she went to the doctor, worried about her years of sun exposure. To her relief, her doctor said it was just fatty tissue. Then another lump showed up. This time, she was sent to a plastic surgeon to have the lumps removed and analyzed. The results for the larger one came back benign. Relief. A week later, the results for the smaller lump came back. It was malignant melanoma, and it had metastasized. Thus began a year of various treatments, including chemotherapy. Kathy lost a significant amount of weight; her hair fell out. But she continued coaching baseball and carried on with her life, and eventually went back to her job at ICBC. Six months later she was back at the doctor’s office, complaining of wheezing. An x-ray revealed a ten-centimetre mass in her lungs, nestled securely between all four quadrants, which meant it was inoperable. It meant more chemo. At the BC Cancer Agency, she was told she’d be lucky to live another six to nine months. But Kathy simply didn’t believe them. Eight years later, she’s still fighting against that statement. Her melanoma has spread to her lymphatic system, her lungs, her liver, bones, adrenals and most recently, her kidney. Had it not been for her perseverance and determination, along with that of her amazing doctors and her family, she would not be alive today. Yet the journey was almost devastating to Kathy and her family, emotionally, financially, and of course physically. And so Kathy decided to start the Save Your Skin Foundation, to provide education and support to people dealing with late stage melanoma. Melanoma is on the rise, and is increasing fastest among women under the age of 29. Because our skin is our largest organ and it resides on the exterior of our bodies, we can easily monitor it ourselves. Early detection and prevention are key methodologies to win the war against melanoma. New research and access to new therapies are becoming more readily available, but melanoma awareness and dissemination of this knowledge is paramount. The Save Your Skin Foundation can help melanoma sufferers get access to clinical trials and centres of excellence. It can pair patients with the best doctors in the field. The foundation will arrange travel and accommodations, pick patients up from the airport, and drive them to their medical appointments. All the details that seem so incredibly overwhelming when dealing with a major disease, from treatment options to hotel bookings, can be made simpler with the help of the Save Your Skin Foundation. Nine years after she was first diagnosed with melanoma, Kathy is still playing baseball. She is still playing golf. But nowadays she does so outside of peak sun hours, and with a hat, UV clothing, plenty of sunscreen and the awareness that one bad sunburn can ruin your life.

Seven Key Acupressure Points for

Emotional Health & Beauty By Spence Pentland

A

cupressure is an ancient healing technique using the fingers (instead of needles) to stimulate acupuncture points. It is used for general health preservation and the self-treatment of disease. The seven key acupressure points explained in this article effectively stimulate the body’s natural self-curative abilities. Acupressure is best known for its ability to alleviate physical pain. For issues such as headaches and back pain, acupressure is extremely effective. For issues of emotional pain, the positive effects of acupressure are only starting to get the attention they deserve. In addition to its applications for pain, acupressure points have been used as beauty treatments for thousands of years. An acupressure beauty treatment enhances muscle tone, relieves stress and increases circulation. There are seven key acupressure points every woman should stimulate daily for overall emotional health and long-lasting beauty: 1. Zu San Li: Relieves worry, pensiveness and over-thinking, which lead to deep wrinkles on the forehead, digestive pain, headaches and fatigue. The Zu San Li point is located three inches below the knee cap, and one finger breadth lateral to the shin bone. 2. Tai Chong: Relieves anger, irritability and impatience, which lead to permanent furrows between the eyebrows, acne, PMS and irregular menstrual cycles. The Tai Chong point is located between the big toe and the second toe, approximately one inch inward from the webbing on the top of the foot. 3. San Yin Jiao: Relieves all fear, anger and worry-related emotions. These emotions ultimately rob their possessor of leading a fulfilling life. They may also cause urinary problems, high blood pressure and thyroid conditions, to name a few. The San Yin Jiao point is located three inches above the inner ankle bone, just behind the shin bone. 4. Yang Ling Quan: Relieves timidity and aids in making decisions. The classic ‘hunch-back’ may be a result of not taking charge of your life. This acupressure point should always be used if physical pain is present. The Yang Ling Quan point is

located just below the knee cap, between the head of the fibula bone (on the outside of the leg) and the shin bone. Nei Guan: Relieves anxiety, shallow breathing and stress, which lead to palpitations, circulatory problems, and neck tension. The Nei Guan point is located on the inside of the wrist, two inches from the crease of the wrist (toward the elbow) and between the two major tendons that can be felt in the middle of the arm. Lie Que: Relieves sadness, grief and depression. The vibrant magnetic aspect of a woman suffers most from these emotional issues. Poor posture, respiratory problems, and various skin conditions may be prevented with the use of this point. The Lie Que point is located on the thumb side of the wrist, beside the head of the radial bone (just below the base of the thumb) approximately one inch from the crease of the wrist (toward the elbow). He Gu: This point can be used for any emotional stress. It is very important for the health of the facial muscles and skin. It is also effective in relieving menstrual pain and problems with the large bowel. The He Gu point is located in the muscle between the thumb and the pointer finger.

When administering acupressure to these points, use enough pressure that there is slight discomfort but no pain. Apply this pressure for 20-30 seconds to each point, two times per day. It should be noted that all of these pressure points are on both sides of the body.

FRESH BITES

Raw Desse rts

By Joy Houston

A

ccording to Joy Houston, the chef behind the online gourmet raw cuisine class Rocking Body Raw Food, many peoples’ first experiments with raw cuisine are dessert recipes. “Raw Desserts are the gateway drug to gourmet raw cuisine. Once you taste the gluten free, dairy free, naturally sweetened desserts that are possible with raw food recipes, you open your eyes to the fact that healthy eating can be unbelievably delicious. The initial attraction is taste; what keeps you coming back to learn more is the way you feel when you eat plenty of whole foods. Eat a brownie whipped up from a pre-made mix and most people will want more and more. That happens because what you are eating has had all the life processed out of it. Your body gets a tease of what it craves, but no real food. Contrast that with eating a raw cuisine brownie, which delivers whole, live foods with all their nutrients and enzymes intact. You will feel the difference. That elevated feeling is what piques curiosity and excites people to seek more raw recipes like a man with his head on fire seeks water. Life is too short not to eat this way.” Obviously, these are the words of a passionate leader in the raw foods movement, so we asked her to deliver a few sweets that she thought might entice you down the road to incorporating more whole, unprocessed foods into your diet. She has shared three desserts from her Rocking Body Raw Food class.

Living Lemon Bars

Crust: • ¾ cup macadamia nuts (soaked 8 hours, drained and rinsed) • ½ cup cashews (soaked 8 hours, drained and rinsed)
 • 1 cup dried pineapple, diced • ½ cup dried coconut
 • 3 to 4 tablespoons lemon juice • Rind from 2 lemons

Topping: • Rinds from 2 lemons • ¾ cup coconut oil • 2 tablespoons raw honey • 3 to 4 tablespoons fresh-squeezed lemon juice • Dash of sea salt To make the crust, combine all ingredients except lemon juice in a food processor and pulse. Slowly add the lemon juice through the top until a dough-like consistency is formed. Process until the dough is free of chunky nut pieces. Scrape down and stir the mixture to achieve the doughy consistency. Place the crust mixture in an 8” by 8” square glass pan. Press the mixture into the pan to form a crust of even thickness. To make the tangy frosting, add all topping ingredients to the processor. Pulse until a relatively even consistency is achieved. Process until the mixture becomes creamy and a little fluffy. Do not over process or the mixture will melt and become soupy. Pour the topping onto the crust. If necessary, spread to distribute evenly. Cover the pan and place it in the fridge until the topping sets. It will be firm and waxy-feeling. Slice the bars into small squares and serve.

Cacoa Pudding

Ingredients: • 2 ripe avocados
 • ¼ cup raw cacao powder • ½ to ¾ cup maple syrup or agave • 2 tablespoons coconut oil
 • Seeds from 1 vanilla pod or 1 tablespoon vanilla extract • Dash of sea salt Put all ingredients in the Vita-Mix highspeed blender and blend. Stop to scrape down sides. Blend again until warm. Serve warm. This make a great pudding parfait. Layer with slices of ripe banana and sliced almonds or your

choice of fresh seasonal fruits. Variations on this recipe can be made by adding mint, or by reducing the amount of sweetener slightly and replacing it with fresh squeezed orange juice. The possibilities with this pudding base are endless. It also makes a fabulous frosting as you will see with the Mint Cacao Brownies because it firms to a totally different texture when refrigerated.

Mint Cacao Brownies

Brownies: • 1 cup almonds (soaked 8 hours, drained and rinsed) • 1 cup cashews (soaked 8 hours, drained and rinsed)
 • 1 cup chopped dates, pits removed
 • ¾ cup raw cacao powder
 • 1/8 teaspoon sea salt
 • 10-15 mint leaves or ¼ teaspoon organic mint extract
 • ¼ cup maple syrup Frosting: A full batch of the Cacao Pudding (above)

Pulse all brownie ingredients in the food processor until well combined. Process until mixture becomes a dough of uniform consistency. Transfer the mixture to an 8” by 8” square glass pan. Press the mixture into the pan to form an even surface. Top with the Cacao Pudding and refrigerate until the pudding sets to form a creamy, light frosting. Serve garnished with mint leaves. Grab one for yourself before you serve them or you may not get one! Joy Houston is the head chef at The Delicious Revolution – a collective established to help people to find the best diet for their unique physiology. Perfect Nose

lthough its exact definition remains elusive, the concept of beauty has fascinated mankind from the beginning. The great philosopher Plato wrote extensively on the topic, and identified beauty as a “moral” as well as a “physical” concept. Sappho, the Ancient Greek lyric poet, wrote that “beauty endures only for as long as it can be seen; goodness, beautiful today, will remain so tomorrow.” Beauty is, as the saying goes, in the eye of the beholder. Consider Leonardo da Vinci’s masterpiece, the Mona Lisa. Few would argue that this is not a beautiful work of art. The colours are sublime and the subject’s eyes follow the observer as a smile dances upon her lips. However, many would argue that the subject herself – when taken in isolation – is only average in appearance. Like many other things, it is the sum of the parts and the way they balance one another that makes the Mona Lisa beautiful. It is this ability of the human eye to appreciate the “wholeness” of things that defines beauty, and in that sense perhaps beauty is less a definition than an impression. As the late, great Hollywood producer Aaron Spelling quipped when asked for his definition of beauty: “I can’t define it, but when it walks into the room, I know it.” What Mr. Spelling says rings true for us all – beauty is as much something we feel as it is something we see.

Shaping Beauty

The term rhinoplasty is derived from the Greek words rhis, meaning “nose,” and plassein, meaning “to shape.” It is used to describe the facial plastic surgical procedure for restoring the function, reconstructing the form and cosmetically enhancing the nose. Although we think of rhinoplasty surgery as a very modern trend, the first description of this procedure actually dates back to 800 BC when, in ancient India, the ayurvedic physician Sashutra described a procedure designed to repair noses that had been amputated as religious, military or criminal punishment. Despite its ancient origins, little progress was made until the 20th century when the discoveries of anaesthesia and antibiotics allowed for a period of rapid evolution in rhinoplasty technique, which has continued ever since. When a patient comes to see me for a rhinoplasty consultation, the first question I ask is, “What is it about your nose that you would like to change?” The most common answers are: there is a bump on the top of the nose (known as the dorsum), or the tip is too round or too flat. Patients may be hesitant to state too many dislikes for fear of ending up with an “operated on” looking nose. This is misguided, however, as multiple small changes that bring the various parts of the nose into balance will always look more natural and beautiful than changes made without

consideration of the overall structure and balance of the nose. Likewise, the importance of considering other facial features that may benefit from adjustment cannot be overstated. Another critical yet often overlooked factor to consider during consultation is the position of the chin. A weak chin is often not recognized by patients seeking to have their nose reduced in size. Yet when the lower third of the face is brought into balance with the nose and other structures of the upper face, a good rhinoplasty result often becomes a great rhinoplasty result. In the presence of normal dental occlusion and a planned reduction rhinoplasty, a chin augmentation can be safely performed at the same time with remarkable synergistic results. Computer imaging has become an invaluable communication tool during the rhinoplasty consultation. Digital photographs are taken and then altered to demonstrate the changes following surgery. Often a patient will be unable to explain what they are unhappy, with but will be able to point it out on a photograph of themselves.

Achieving Perfection

Obviously, the goal of any rhinoplasty procedure is the “perfect nose” when viewed from the perspective of form and function. Perfection from a functional standpoint is easily assessed – if not always easily achieved. However, when one considers the form or appearance of the nose, what is perfection? If you saw it, would you know it? Would it stand out as a central feature of the face, or is the perfect nose one that wouldn’t be noticed at all? Broad aesthetic principles apply. For example, a smooth, gently curved line should run from the eyebrow down the side of the nose and to the tip (the “brow-tip aesthetic line”). The width of the nostrils should roughly equal the distance between the eyes. The dorsal profile should be straight or have a slight concavity, and the tip of the nose should be well defined. Among his or her patients, a rhinoplasty surgeon will see every possible variation in the structure of the nose and every possible combination of the various parts of the nose. The goal is to adjust the shape and function of the nose to achieve what the patient and surgeon consider to be “perfect.” The desired end result will vary widely among patients and will be influenced by, among other factors, age, sex, ethnicity, life experience and personal taste. From this more global perspective, the perfect nose cannot be defined in isolation and the days of the “cookie cutter” rhinoplasty are thankfully behind us. Ironically, as the global community has become more interconnected, the art of rhinoplasty has become more individualistic. The goal is to create a nose that is natural, un-operated in appearance, symmetric and harmonious with the surrounding facial features, racially appropriate, gender appropriate and age appropriate.

Dr. Andrew B. Denton is a board certified facial plastic surgeon and assistant clinical professor at the University of British Columbia. In practice since 2001, Dr. Denton specializes in rhinoplasty and the surgical and non-surgical treatment of the aging face, neck and brow. www.doctordenton.com

SIZE MATTERS! Portion Control By Bonnie Barton

I

t’s 2011, and we as Canadians are fatter than ever. How could this happen when there are literally thousands of books, pills, diets and gimmicks at our fingertips? In our grandparents’ day, an obese person was someone you saw at a circus. The word “organic” was unheard of when referring to vegetables, and “supersized” meals full of chemicals didn’t even exist. The fact that there is a “diet” industry at all just proves the point: nothing seems to work for people who are desperate to lose weight. Over 58 billion dollars were spent in the diet business last year alone! Most of us are looking for the magic cure to lose those last ten pounds, but the funny thing is, the answer to weight loss is very simple. Eat real food, meaning something without a bar code, and cut down your portion size. It’s that easy. No point system, no pills to make your heart race, no liquid diets. Compared to other countries, our portion sizes are almost obscene. You just don’t see heaping plates of fried food in France or Italy, and it’s not like those women don’t know how to enjoy wine, cheese and pasta! But they do it in moderation. And they do eat carbs – the right ones. Sometimes we forget that fruits and vegetables are also carbohydrates. The same with fat.

We need it to keep our skin and hair healthy, and to lose weight. Choose healthy fats like olive oil and avocadoes. Finally, when making protein choices, keep it simple: buy organic. Why would you even want to take the chance of eating chemicals and hormones that make farm animals larger? Eating these types of foods in smaller portions throughout the day will provide a continual flow of caloric energy to your body. Drink at least eight glasses of water a day (more if you are over 140lbs), and try to get seven hours of sleep each night. If you don’t have a good multivitamin, buy one, and not from a drugstore. Lastly, get rid of the giant meals. Start with eating a smaller breakfast, and pack a snack for a few hours later. You will be on your way to revealing that healthy, vital person that’s locked inside you before you know it – without the pills, and without breaking the bank. Bonnie Barton has worked in Vancouver’s film and television industry since 1999 as a body double. She is a trained laser consultant and clinician in body contouring devices used across Canada. As of 2010, she became co-president of Vidadish Fit Portions, a company dedicated to teaching weight loss through portion control. She is a mother of a five-year-old, and calls Vancouver home. www.vidadish.com

Tips and Tricks

for Lovely Arms S

ummer is almost here, and in just a few short weeks the warm sunshine will give us the opportunity to enjoy the outdoors and participate in a variety of activities that only the summer season can inspire! No matter what your plans, your wardrobe is likely going to include shorts, tank tops, bathing suits, sundresses or evening wear. We have a few weeks to put it all together so we can walk into the season feeling confident and exhilarated about our bodies. We want to conquer those special occasions with Cara Thien finesse and style. It does not matter how old you are, what size you are, or what body type you are, you can jump right in and make those changes in a short period of time with the right guidance. In the fitness industry, we have a toolbox that we rely on to help you. I look at overall balance for my clients. Here are my tips and tricks for lean, toned arms to help you feel great this summer!

Weight Train for Lovely Arms

I suggest weight training at least three times a week and at this point in the year, I have my clients hitting upper body twice a week to create full shoulders and arms that appear toned and defined. Well-developed shoulders not only give you the necessary strength to perform simple everyday tasks, they provide a toned appearance with better posture and minimize the size of your hips. Select weights that will suit the number of reps you will do, and follow the chart below.

By Cara Thien

Military press: Sit on the bench, keeping your core tight. Start with the dumbbells in your hands and raise your arms so that your hands are on opposite sides of your head, elbows bent at 90° angles and in line with your shoulders. With palms facing forward, raise your arms overhead without straightening them out completely. Hold for a second, then slowly return to the starting position. Repeat. Gymnast front raise: Standing with knees slightly bent, press back to the wall and contract your core. With a dumbbell placed firmly in each hand, raise both arms at the same time overhead. Lateral strip set: Seated on a bench with your arms at your side, palms facing your legs, contract your core, squeeze your shoulder and lift your arm out to the side until it is parallel to the floor, remembering not to stiffen your elbow. For optimal results, choose a weight that you are only able to lift for 10, then decrease the weight and continue until you cannot go anymore, exhausting the muscles and move on to yet a lower weight and finish. Always pause at the top before slowly returning to the starting position, and remember, once you have lost good form, it is time to move to a lower weight. Bent over lat raise: Seated on a bench, bend over at the waist with your feet shoulder width apart. Keep a slight bend in the knees to prevent strain on the lower back. Hold the dumbbells at arm’s length in front of you with the palms of your hands facing each other. Keep a slight bend in your elbows. Using your upper back strength, raise the dumbbells to the back and upwards in a semicircular arc as far as you can. Hold this position for a second to maximize the peak contraction in the rear deltoids. Lower the dumbbells back to the starting position. Most people usually do not use their rear deltoids on a day-today basis. Use this exercise to build. Choose a weight that can challenge you to just make 10 reps. Lateral raise on an incline bench: This is similar to the previous versions of the bent over lateral raise except you lay chest down on an incline bench. This isolates the rear deltoids more and you will not be able to use as much weight as with the previous version.

Hydration, Nutrition and Cardio

Another key element in any fitness program is hydration. Your body is 60 percent water and, to perform adequately, requires hydration at a cellular level at all times. This will also decrease bloating or feeling puffy if done correctly. I suggest you begin your day with 500 ml of water as soon as you wake up and continue drinking water evenly throughout the day. I’ve seen this simple step change clients’ bodies dramatically in a few days. We have even seen clients reduce a whole pant size from even hydration. My next tip is nutrition. This is critical and will likely have the most impact on your body in the shortest amount of time. We suggest that you eat small meals, six times a day with the correct ratios for your daily regimen. Be consistent, eat clean and watch the change! Finally, the never-ending question: how much cardio should you do? I suggest you weight train first and follow up with your cardio regimen. This alone will start to tighten the skin and help the definition appear in your arms. It won’t take long to see great results just in time for summer! Cara Thien is an elite personal trainer, competitive fitness coach and sports nutrition advisor. An IFBB national level competitor, Cara is a sponsored figure and fitness athlete who wins events in both Canada and the USA.
