EDITOR-AT-LARGE Life, as we know it, is defined by how we view things. Through the lens of intentional purity, whether it be someone famous and wealthy, or a person down on their luck, I can see radiant beauty from a lifetime of individual stories written within their eyes and the beautifully telling creases upon their face. The gravitational pull towards each other is found not only within our similarities and our human need for belonging but also because of our distinctive personal uniqueness.

I

am so proud to bring you this issue of Fresh Magazine.

“Diversity is not about how we differ. Diversity is about embracing one another’s uniqueness.” (Ola Joseph). Photographer, Alkan Emin, artistically and profoundly displays the raw, unmade-up, simplistically fresh beauty of people in this black & white series of photographs. Featured are, music legend Jann Arden, supermodel Monika Schnarre, and from CTV’s ‘Social’, Cynthia Loyst and Marci Len. Also effectively included are a variety of people whose names may not be recognized by the public but whose faces will no longer be merely passed by without notice. The images enthrall the very essence of human existence, and what can not be denied is the captivation of our spirits as the ingenuousness of innocent simplicity brings us to a place of unembellished humanity. Diversity is more than only an offering of variety. It can touch our souls and cradle our individuality while celebrating each other’s innate being and presence together as we share life.

The ONE THING you need to know about SEX and Relationships.

. .and it’s a game changer. By JULIE ARCHAMBAULT

re Relationships Always A Sensitive Point in Your Life? Do you find yourself always running after someone who is not available? Maybe you notice that you are always sitting beside your phone hoping for a text? Or maybe it appears that your partner is always on the verge of pulling away… Perhaps, out of the blue, your partner pulls the plug on the relationship, and you didn’t see this coming! Regardless, it's making you feel small and powerless... and yet, you thought that with all that awareness and work on yourself that you had become an EMPOWERED WOMAN! So why are you feeling like "SHIT".... AGAIN!? And why is it so difficult to have a satisfying relationship? In your relationships, you may notice patterns of: • Behaviors that don't make you feel so great. • Criticism, Withdrawal, Disconnect • Walking on egg shells • Drama, jealousy, rejection. And if this is the case, you probably agree with me that these dynamics can make you feel pretty off, irritable, small, even depressed. And in the sexy department, your self-esteem may look like a deflated balloon. The problem is that it isn’t clear how to reconnect with your partner. Or, how to manifest a new and amazing relationship in your life that is actually wholesome and fulfilling! You know, the kind that you actually deserve. Of course you deserve to be loved. We all do. So, here it is, the “One” piece of information that can change everything for you.

Are you ready? And just saying, it may sound like a simple statement, but please bear with me. It actually is a very profound statement.

"SEX IS DESIGNED TO WAKE UP YOUR SHIT.” Yep. It will activate it. Why? Very simple. As your sexual energy moves through your body, it wakes up all kinds of things. Yes, it can wake up joy, of course! But, it also wakes up your dormant pain points.

"SEX is ENERGY.” And it will hit up against anything that is blocking its natural flow. Let me say that again: It will hit up against anything blocking its natural flow. When this energy starts doing its thing, you will notice that odd behaviors start showing up in your relationships. We actually store our emotions, our fears, our traumas in our body: Fear, shame, grief, abandonment, hurt, anger, you name it, it is there. Your body knows.

And, this is actually how you deepen your relationship. Human’s are designed to grow. When you stagnate, at one point, something comes to wake you up. The issue here is that we don't always know how to take care of the problem. It often feels overwhelming. This is because the answers lie in:

...your blind spots! And what happens when you don't take care of the surfacing issues? Things crack. Go moldy. Overflow. Things break. Including hearts. But if you take action, this is your chance to do something about it before the damages get really bad! There are actually 5 pillars to creating mind-blowing relationships, intimacy, and sex in your life. Once you master these, you will notice that you will be showing up for sex, intimacy, and your relationships in a whole new way. You are going to be coming from a place of embodied power.

When blocks start coming up to the surface, certain issues appear in the relationship, think of it as an invitation for some maintenance work.

You will no longer feel small and voiceless.

Just imagine if you had a plumbing problem, and you never called in a plumber to take care of it. Not a pretty sight, right!? So, yes, don’t ignore the problem. It will only get bigger.

So, what are these 5 PILLARS anyway?

When you take care of the issues as they surface, this is what allows the flow to come back.

You will notice a huge weight is taken off your shoulders.

Join me for my FREE Webinar on the 5 Pillars for healthy, loving, and sexy relationships… that will get you out of your relationship funk! Follow this link for more information: https://www.cocreativesex.com/webinar-sign-up/

I believe we are in the midst of a new feminine not feminist movement. Which has spiked my curiosity to explore successful female leaders insights, challenges, lessons and tips/tricks on how to "have it all" as a modern day independant woman.

How to balance being an independent and empowered woman in the world, while still maintaining the role of the divine feminine as a nurturing mother and wife/partner at home? I don’t believe that strong and independent are the opposite of nurturing. Femininity is inherently strong. They are not divergent and do not need to be reconciled, so it is not a question of balance, it is a question of living as honestly and authentically as I can. What does independence mean to you? Independence means having agency over issues that relate directly to my identity. What are some of your insights on how to have a successful partnership (husband) with a man while maintaining your independence? Drive and passion are sexy to both of us. My husband champions me and I support him in what he does. if either of us lost that drive, it wouldn’t be attractive to the other person. What is your opinion about the shift in consciousness to empower women in the workplace?

Blush Lingerie set: City Lux Black sequins suit: Smythe Black Louboutin: Mine & Yours Co.

Power comes from knowledge and women should know they can have it all, but not necessarily all at once. Recognizing that life requires choice and oftentimes compromise allows us all to manage our expectations and build well-rounded experiences over the long-term.

You're raising the next generation of men. What's your approach in teaching your sons about equality? We are a family full of strong and successful women with partners who respect and champion us. Showing them living, breathing examples of positive male-female relations is the most effective way. What was your #fuckyes or #fuckthis moment where you took your game to the next level? #fuckyes – when Bonnie Brooks invited me onto the team to build out Canada’s biggest bridal salon at Kleinfeld, I knew she – and I – were taking a risk. When it paid off, I knew I could trust my instincts and continue taking risks, pushing myself and trying new things.

#fuckthis – knowing that not every relationship is a good one and sometimes, you have to part ways with partners in order to move forward as an individual. It’s not always pretty but in the long run, it’s worth it. - Jessica

I have never been able to describe myself in one word. I am all the words and that's what diversity is to me: people that will always defy description, people that belong everywhere.

Strength lies in differences, not in similarities.

Diversity shouldn't even be something that we have to think about. It's the key to life.

Diversity is life: cultivate and embrace it.

When I look at the various ways we as humans express ourselves it becomes clear we are all many, yet we are one.

Without a difference of diversity humanity has no soul. Even dressed the same, our souls will shine

We should celebrate diversity because it makes the world colorful, exciting and unique.

New order of world peace.

Diversity isn't something you strive for, or achieve, or create. It's already there. If you can't find it, if you can't see it, you suck.

If only everyone in the world could travel far and wide, it would go a long way in helping people lose their fear of anyone who looks, thinks, worships, lives differently from themselves.

Diversity makes life interesting; Appreciating and celebrating each others differences.

Diversity involves getting rid of the “boxes we use to categorize, judge and use to place a value on others based on cultural (gender or personality traits based on sexist beliefs) and religious dogmas. Equality requires diversity and cannot be achieved without it. We all still have a task in front of us.

Diversity is good, but alone it isn't enough to create a harmonious, compassionate society. Alone, it is tokenism. That's why we must build inclusive communities racially, culturally, sexually, economically - where every individual truly has the opportunity to thrive.

Diversity is beauty and strength. It embraces colors, smells, tastes, ideas and ideology. It's unique while unifying.

Diversity, to me, is about recognizing the inherent strength and dazzling beauty that comes from the myriad colors and stories that fill the world.

Diversity is the spice of life and life is better in colour.

Being black and different brings blessings and happiness and challenges.

Everyone is beautiful no matter the color of our skin, the shape of our nose, the texture of our hair‌ we are all beautiful, we are all unique; all special and all children of god.

When you strip away everything and expose vulnerability, on the deepest level, we are all the same.

A land or country, much like our ideal way of Canadian life... not just a melting pot, but a mosaic of culture living in harmony, embracing differences. We each weave a piece of a large tapestry, contributing to a diversity that propels our culture. It lends life mystery and fills us with a sense of curiosity.

freshmag.ca FRESH MAGAZINE

Growing up in Scarborough and having been exposed to many different cultures and then working in the fashion world where diversity is embraced, I've always been aware of how special it was to be exposed to such a beautiful melting pot of color and culture.

Diversity is at the heart of life’s greatest lessons. We are all reminded how similar we all are and that our differences are opportunities to listen and learn.

Diversity, when embraced, gives us strength and clarity that can only come from bringing our differences together.

Listening, engaging, recognizing, and creating space in our day to day lives for people who are unique and different from us. Diversity is educating.

As an artist, all concepts are visual to me and this includes diversity. I see patterns in facial features, skin tone, hair texture etc‌and no matter how diverse we may all be, these patterns repeat themselves time and time again in different arrangements in different people, the human species. We are all the same.

“Every Woman” - when I hear these words, I think of the great diversity of women in our world. I am honored to represent one part of this diversity..

We have to understand the negative human intellectual construction around the body sizes and shapes we inhabit, and celebrate the truth that at our cores we are all spiritual beings having a human experience.

At 70 years old if I could give myself one piece of advice, it would be to use the words “fuck off” much more frequently. - Helen Mirren

We all live with the objective of being happy; our lives are all different and yet the same.

Diversity is not the objective, but rather the beginning of what we as a society can truly be together.

Diversity. Without it, there's no balance.

CBD – The New Wellness Vitamin for Women Yes, it comes from the cannabis plant; no, it will not make you high. By Karen Lee CBD 101 Let’s begin with some basics. Cannabidiol, aka “CBD”, is a compound extracted from the flowers and buds of marijuana or hemp plants. There are a lot of misconceptions about CBD but the first one worth clearing up is that both marijuana and hemp are plants that are part of the Cannabis plant species and both contain compounds called “cannabinoids”. But let’s be very clear, CBD will not get you high. The compound in marijuana that causes the characteristic psychoactive ‘high’ is found in tetrahydrocannabinol, aka “THC”, not CBD. While legalization efforts are a big part of the reason why cannabis is a buzz topic these days, the most exciting reason from a health and wellness standpoint

32

FRESH MAGAZINE

is that people are finally paying attention to CBD research that shows promise of the plant compound’s immense health benefits. HOW DOES CBD WORK? One of the things people are always shocked to learn is that CBD is similar to a compound that our bodies produce naturally, endocannabinoids. Endocannabinoids are natural cannabinoids that our bodies produce on its own, typically found in the brain, throughout the central nervous system and within our endocrine system. When we consume cannabinoids, they stimulate the endocannabinoid system, a system of receptors throughout our central nervous

system and almost every organ in our bodies. Cannabinoids are the keys that unlock these receptors and help support our immune systems, brain function, manage stress and even keep our hormones in check. I prefer to think of CBD as a vitamin. For example, our bodies naturally produce vitamin D when we are exposed to sunlight, converting sunlight to vitamin D through the skin and helps support the immune system and aids bone health. Much in the same way that we’re encouraged to start taking vitamin D supplements to maintain a healthy immune system, we also need to supplement our natural reserves of CBD as we get older to keep our bodies in balance.

CBD AND WOMEN’S HEALTH Encourage Healthy Estrogen Metabolism CBD’s pain relief properties can provide women with relief from pain related to menstruation, including headache, menstrual cramps, muscle and back pain. CBD also has positive effects on women’s estrogen levels. Estrogen works with endocannabinoids to stabilize one’s mood and emotional response. Naturally, a drop in estrogen levels could also result to a drop in endocannabinoid levels, which can result in depression, anxiety, and a general feeling of gloom. However, CBD has been found able to mitigate feelings of sadness, anxiety and depression, and can help regulate a woman’s mood. CBD is also greatly effective when estrogen levels have spiked and started dropping, which is one to two days prior to ovulation. Furthermore, CBD can also enhance your sex drive. This is again associated with the role that CBD plays in the estrogen-endocannabinoid relationship. A slight spike in estrogen levels with low doses of CBD can result in a spike in female sex drive.

likely to suffer from anxiety than men. Anxiety can seriously impair your ability to enjoy life, stay focused, and reach your goals. And current treatment options for anxiety come with a hefty list of negative side-effects and can be highly addictive. Fortunately, numerous studies have demonstrated that CBD is an incredibly effective alternative for anxiety. For example, one study looked to patients who suffered from anxiety when faced with public speaking. The individuals who consumed CBD before giving a speech reported less stress and a better performance than those who took a placebo. One research looked into how CBD effects serotonin, a neurotransmitter found in the brain and nervous system that plays a crucial role in both depression and anxiety. CBD has been

therapeutic aid of inflammation. Cannabinoids carry potent anti-inflammatory immunosuppressive and antioxidant properties. There are 113 known cannabinoids found in a cannabis plant. Our endocannabinoid system has been shown to assist in the regulation of many of the body’s physical functions, with significant involvement being found in neurological function, immunity and inflammation control. CB2 receptor in our endocannabinoid system are primarily found on immune cells, which fight infection and control inflammation. CBD and other cannabinoids are shown to activate these CB2 receptors, creating anti-inflammatory effects throughout the system. CBD AND THE FUTURE OF WOMEN’S HEALTH

"One of the things people are always shocked to learn is that CBD is similar to a compound that our bodies produce naturally, endocannabinoids."

“The interaction between estrogen and CBD makes women more sensitive to the compound in general, which gives the plant greater mood stabilizing and pain-relieving effects. We found that females found 30% more pain relief with CBD treatment. So, women seem to get more benefit out of the herb as a chronic pain-fighter than men.” – Washington State University Research Team That’s fantastic news for women! Especially during that time of the month, women may be able to turn to CBD as natural remedy to reduce PMS symptoms!

shown to function similarly to the commonly prescribed SSRIs and CBD; both shown to promote regeneration of the hippocampus, a region of the brain that is associated with depression and anxiety. There is substantial evidence that CBD and other cannabinoids are incredibly effective treatment for anxiety. Fortunately, CBD comes without the problematic side effects of pharmaceuticals. ANTI-INFLAMMATORY

SOOTHE ANXIETY

Did you know, women are 2-3 times more likely to experience inflammation than men?

Women aren’t the only ones who suffer from anxiety, but it turns out that we are 70% more

Research into the extraordinary powers of CBD is just beginning. Scientists are now looking at the potential of CBD to treat migraines, breast cancer, eating disorders, diabetes, and depression.

Without a doubt, new cures and treatments will be developed from the cannabis plant, especially from CBD. Meanwhile, revolution on a smaller scale is taking place, as patients are taking their health into their own hands. Millions of women who have been frustrated with aspects of conventional medicine are turning to CBD and finding out exactly how it can help them live happier, healthier lives.

The 5 Basic Rules of Skincare Your Five-Step Anti-Aging Arsenal By DR. MARCIA FLEMING

W

hen it comes to aging skin, prevention is obviously the key. But if you have neglected your skin and now have sun damaged, older-looking skin, there are still steps you can take to reverse the changes. There are even at-home topical treatments that can dramatically improve the look and feel of your skin. Most important is to no longer neglect your skin, and to learn to avoid the things that damage it most.

1: Quit Smoking Smoking is very harmful to the skin because it decreases the delivery of nutrients and therefore increases collagen breakdown, resulting in premature wrinkling. It is a very difficult addiction to quit but studies prove the more times you try, the more successful you will be. The average number of attempts is eight. For you it might take four attempts or ten, but if you don’t keep trying you’ll never get there.

2: Avoid UV Light The easiest way to look better is to minimize exposure to UV light. This means no sun tanning, no using tanning booths, and wearing sunscreen daily – summer and winter. This is the rudimentary basic of skincare, like brushing your teeth for dental care. But even if you have done a lot of sun tanning in the past (and I am not excluded from this), it is amazing how the skin can recover. I shudder to think of some of the things I’ve done to get that glorious tan. I like zinc in my sunscreen for two simple reasons: it has great UVA and UVB coverage, and I can tell how much I am getting by looking at the percentage listed. Generally the higher the better, though of course you don’t want to look like a clown. Nowadays, most sunscreens with zinc look very good when applied. I like sunscreens with 6 percent zinc or higher.

34

3: Use Vitamin A

5: Embrace Antioxidants

Vitamin A, used topically, has been proven over the years to improve skin tone and texture as well as helping with abnormal pigmentation. It is available with or without a prescription. Be warned that many face cream manufacturers put a drop of Retinol in their products so that they can say it contains vitamin A. If retinol is listed near the end of the ingredient list, then it is in very small quantity and probably negligible. Prescription vitamin A can be too strong for some skin and often must be gradually introduced. Sometimes doctors and their patients desire quick results, then apply too much vitamin A, too frequently, and are turned off because their skin becomes red and flaky and looks worse than it did to start with! Do not fret – this can be easily resolved.

Antioxidants are all the rage in skincare. There are hundreds of them. We know the benefits of having them in our diet: they may protect us from heart disease, cancer, dementia and premature aging.

Vitamin A is the only topical application that is proven to regenerate collagen. Need I say more? It thins the outer layer of skin, making it look brighter – but there’s no need to worry about this thinning of the skin since it actually thickens the living layers of the skin, and thins only the dead surface cells. Vitamin A will make your skin more sun sensitive, so again it is important to use sunscreen. It also improves cell turnover, making skin more even and more reflective to light, like the skin of youth.

4: Have an AHA Moment Cleopatra knew the benefits of using alpha and beta hydroxyl acids on her skin, and so should you. Rediscovered in the 1980s we now know that AHAs are excellent exfoliates without the risk of more abrasive treatments. They also improve hydration and allow products to penetrate better. AHAs and BHAs work to slough off dead skin and promote new skin cell growth. They are known for their ability to reverse signs of aging like brown spots and fine lines. However, hydroxyl acids will leave your skin sensitive to sun, so be sure once again to use sunscreen.

While less is understood about their effects on the skin, the basic idea is that antioxidants may absorb or remove particles called free radicals, which cause disruption to the operation and makeup of our cells. In the skin layers free radicals can cause the breakdown of collagen, potential growth of abnormal blood vessels, and disruption of pigment cells, creating precancerous skin conditions that do run the risk of becoming cancer. One of the most frequently used antioxidants is vitamin C. It is water soluble and has to be altered to allow it to penetrate the skin. Vitamin E is fairly easily absorbed but also may cause allergic reactions on the skin. Green tea is an excellent antioxidant, but unfortunately get so rapidly destroyed that what starts off in a jar is usually gone by the time it gets on your skin. It is best to drink green tea instead. CoffeeBerry, the previously discarded material surrounding the coffee bean, has been found high in antioxidants and has now been formulated into creams so that it may offer protection and healing for the skin. It may contain more antioxidant potential than any other topical treatment. Often antioxidants are combined to maximize results. The basics of skincare are good sunscreen and sun avoidance. Discuss vitamin A with your skincare provider; go slow and it will do wonders. Remember hydroxy acids and try some antioxidants. There are many different kinds of antioxidants, so try them out to see how your skin feels and responds. Choose a reputable skincare line that lists its ingredients and concentrations. Pharmaceutical grade ingredients offer the highest quantity and quality.

As she writes each formula, she prioritizes the maximum percentage on the luxurious ingredients that matter. “When you look at a LIFANCE ingredient list,” She explains, “these ingredients are at the top of the list.” In addition to an amazing list of luxurious, rare ingredients, “What also makes us unique” she explains, “is an ultra-low emulsifier content, leaving more room in the formula for the ingredients that matter”. “The purpose of the emulsifier (plant wax) is to prevent the cream from separating, but all too often it is used in high concentrations, as

a filler. At LIFANCE we formulate with the smallest amount of emulsifier for it’s sole purpose of preventing separation. Wouldn’t you want the lowest amount of wax in your skin care? I know I do. This innovative way of formulating is especially important for problem skin, people with large pores and prone to breaking out.” LIFANCE formulas are ideal for young and mature skin, sensitive and problem skin, and health conscious people, as they contain no unnecessary or irritating toxins, an ultra-low emulsifier content, and light, fast absorbing, non-pore clogging ingredients. Shannon loves hearing from customers who are ‘beyond excited’ about how LIFANCE has transformed their skin or solved a skin issue. “As the formulator this is truly rewarding,” she explains. As the LIFANCE product line continues to grow, Shannon focuses on opportunities to integrate new ingredients into her formulas. “We just received Botanical Ceramides and Vigna Aconitifolia, at the lab, a natural, botanical alternative to Retinol,” says Shannon, “I am like ‘a kid in a candy store’ opening boxes from my suppliers!”

What is next for Shannon and LIFANCE? As the company continues to grow, she is looking forward to expanding her reach to Spas and Natural Skin Care stores across Canada. Recognizing that truly natural high-end skin care is very difficult to find, she sincerely urges women/men who truly value natural, powerful skin care, to choose LIFANCE for their beauty regimen. KETOGENIC DIET and INTERMITTENT FASTING What it is, Who it Works For and Who Should Steer Clear! by DR. ALLANA POLO, ND Halle Berry, Kim and Kourtney Kardashian, Kobe Bryant, Gwyneth Paltrow and Vanessa Hudgins... What do these people have in common (besides being gorgeous, rich, celebrities)? They are all shouting from the rooftops how they've never felt (or looked) better thanks to the popular eating trend-- The Ketogenic Diet.

T

he Ketogenic Diet and Intermittent Fasting have taken over the health and fitness world with promises of rapid weight loss without restricting calories-- who doesn't love a diet where you aren't going hungry? Those following the program are touting improved energy, mental clarity, regulated blood sugar levels and a rapid drop in blood pressure among other benefits.

The Keto Diet is all about getting your body into a state of “ketosis which is an efficient fat burning state. You shift your calories to a high fat, moderate protein, low carb diet where your body no longer runs of glucose for fuel, but rather fat for fuel.

Chances are you know someone who is raving about the Ketogenic Diet or Intermittent Fasting. It's hard not to jump right in when so many people are seeing such success, but how do you know if these eating trends are right for you? Thankfully New Westminster Naturopathic Physician and weight loss expert, Dr. Allana Polo, is here break down who should try and who should steer clear of Keto and Intermittent Fasting!

Keto is perfect for someone who wants rapid weight loss, hates to be hungry, is tired of counting calories, is ok sticking with the recommended foods without cheat days to keep body in a state of ketosis (aka no going back and forth between carbs and no carbs), is a big meat eater and loves foods high in healthy fat like salmon, avocado, nuts and coconut oil fat. People who love planning meals ahead of time and experimenting with new recipes will love the Keto Diet. It is also recommended for people with blood sugar problems, pre-diabetes or diabetes because it works great for balancing blood sugar levels.

Who Keto Works For:

Who Should Steer Clear of Keto: If you can’t tolerate fat, are vegan, vegetarian or almost entirely plant based, have a hard time sticking with a list of foods you can and cannot eat, or have issues with gallstones or have had your gallbladder removed keto probably isn't right for you.

What an Intermittent Fasting Day Looks Like:

What a Keto Day Looks Like: A typical day may begin with eggs and bacon, with a side of avocado or tomato, along with a bulletproof coffee. Lunch may be a salad or steamed veg with a piece of protein and an olive oil dressing with shredded cheese on top. Dinner could be roasted salmon and broccoli with a low carb cheesecake for dessert! Intermittent Fasting (also known as IF):

small meals and snacks throughout the day, if you can't imagine going without breakfast, if you tend to get hangry or have a hard time going hungry. Night owls might also struggle with this way of eating if they tend to consume a large amount of calories in the late evening and very early morning.

The most popular way to intermittent fast is called the 16/8 Method. Most people do this by fasting (aka not eating) after 8pm. They would skip late night snacking along with breakfast the next morning and then start eating again at 12:00pm with lunch and then dinner. All calories would be consumed within a 8 hour window between 12:00pm and 8:00pm. You can drink water, black coffee and other non-caloric beverages during your fasting window which can help with the hunger. People who do best with intermittent fasting tend to eat low carb, healthy meals during their eating window.

Those following the program are touting improved energy, mental clarity, regulated blood sugar levels and a rapid drop in blood pressure among other benefits... but how do you know if these eating trends are right for you?

IF is very different than Keto, but may offer the same benefits. Your sleep is better, your skin clearer, your mood happier, your digestion smoother, but it always involves some level of shortening or restricting your daily “eating window” so that your body is constantly pulling energy from the food you are taking in, forcing your body to use stored fat for energy. Who Intermittent Fasting Works For:

Intermittent fasting is perfect for someone who wants to lose weight rapidly, is tired of counting calories, tends not to be hungry in the morning and skips breakfast most days, who prefers to eat a few larger meals instead of grazing on smaller meals and snacks throughout the day, is ok being hungry and not giving into the temptation of nighttime grazing in front of the tv. Who Should Steer Clear of Intermittent Fasting:

Other IF methods are the 5:2 method where you eat 5 days of the week and fast 2 days of the week, consuming just 500-600 calories on those days. The Eat. Stop. Eat. Method involves eating normally for 5-6 days a week and fasting by consuming no calories for 1-2 days of the week. The Alternative Day Method has you alternate between eating eating normally one day and consuming just 500 calories the next. Want to share a conversation around who should and shouldn't try Keto and Intermittent Fasting with your audience? Dr. Polo is available for interview to talk about the Ketogenic Diet, Intermittent Fasting and other popular eating trends along with other weight loss and health related topics.

Steer clear of IF you have blood sugar or hypoglycaemia problems or concerns, if you have a high metabolism that needs to be fired with

Western Canada’s Largest International Art Fair is Back April 25 - 28, 2019

W

ith Vancouver constantly being celebrated for its diversity, it’s no surprise that the city is home to Western Canada’s largest international art fair, Art Vancouver. Returning to the Vancouver Convention Center from April 25th to 28th, 2019 marks the art fair’s fifth edition, and it’s promised to inspire and captivate both artists and attendees alike. “Art Vancouver has been gaining worldwide awareness for the past 5 years, bringing together people from all over the world to celebrate art,” shares Lisa Wolfin, Director, Art Vancouver. “Everyone should be able to experience the joy of an art fair, being surrounded with inspiration in a room full of creators and creations. It really brings people together. ” Since 2015, Art Vancouver has been led by Lisa who is both an artist and Vancouver native. Her extensive creative background includes apprenticing for Christian Dior in Paris, the creation of her own fashion line Wear Wolfin Designs, drawing, and painting. She created the fair after recognizing the need for a platform where local and international galleries and artists could collectively display their work, and eventually took the leap after receiving encouragement from fellow artist Lori McPhee. “Art makes you feel good from the inside out, then you get to give it away and make someone else feel good inside,” explains Lisa.

“It’s the gift that keeps on giving.” This year, the fair’s theme is “Uniting Nations Through Art,” echoing art’s capability to connect people across the world from different walks of life. In addition to viewing the exhibits, attendees can look forward to a speaker series, artist demonstrations, art workshops, giving both the novice and professional artist the chance to learn something new. FIFTY SHADES

OF KEGELS By KIM VOPNI

A

very common question I get from clients and when speaking at women’s events is ’what about those kegel balls – should I be using them?’

50 Shades of Grey was read by thousands and caused a significant increase in the use of Ben Wa Balls which are thought to have originated in Japan. They are typically 2 small balls – one hollow one and the other having a small weighted ball inside. The thought is that the motion of the hips cause motion of the balls which then contributes to pleasurable sensations and strengthening of the pelvic floor muscles. Let me start by saying that before you invest in any pelvic floor training device, I recommend you see a pelvic floor physiotherapist to determine if a device will help or hinder your pelvic floor. A kegel weight or other device is not always the right solution for women hoping to improve their pelvic floor function, and in some cases it may actually make things worse. It is becoming increasingly common to see more women with hypertonic pelvic floor muscles, (too much tone) which can become weak and dysfunctional due to overuse. When a woman with a hypertonic pelvic floor uses a kegel device that requires her to grip and hold it inside her body, it can exacerbate the overuse and result in an increase in the bothersome symptoms like pain, incontinence or painful sex. For women who are considered hypotonic (lacking tone) the kegel balls may be helpful but not everyone can hold them in. They can offer stimulation and proprioception and motivation but I don’t believe they are the answer for everyone. I am a believer in annual pelvic floor physiotherapy coupled with a daily kegel practice that is incorporated into movement. If the added feedback that kegel balls or exercises provide seems like it would help you, here are my recommendations.

BIOFEEDBACK Elvie www.elvie.com The Elvie is a simple and comfortable design that works with an app. It is able to distinguish between a pelvic floor contraction and bearing down (what some women do when they think they are contracting). KGoal www.kgoal.com Also sleek, comfortable and links with an app, the KGoal is similar to the Elvie but without the technology to sense bearing down. Pericoach www.pericoach.com Rounding out the top 3 biofeedback kegel exercisers is the Pericoach. Also simple and comfortable with technology that links to your smartphone.

APPS Here is a list of apps that are helpful with reminders, exercises or both! • B-Wom – offers a pelvic floor screening questionnaire and exercises • Squeezy – designed by pelvic health physios in the UK, this app has reminders, visuals, tracking and personalised exercises • Kegel Trainer – includes info on how to activate the pelvic floor and has different levels of exercise. Also has reminders and tracking.

HIGH TECH There have been a lot of advances in technology lately and many clinics are offering laser and light therapies that can help with incontinence, dryness, laxity and atrophy. These therapies (mona lisa touch, Viveve, Thermiva to name a few) have shown promise but are costly and not accessible to all. Some home use technologies with similar technology are becoming available and two are showing some promise.

Kim Vopni is known as The Vagina Coach. She is a certified fitness professional, author, speaker, mom, and founder of 2 businesses - Pelvienne Wellness Inc and Bellies Inc. You can find her on-line at www.vaginacoach.com and www.belliesinc.com on facebook @PelvienneWellness and @BelliesInc, and on twitter and Instagram @VaginaCoach

vSculpt www.vsculpt.com This product uses a combination of heat therapy (RED Light LED), gentle heat and sonic technology to influence the muscles and tissues in the pelvic floor. It has shown improvements in lubrication, sensation and tissue regeneration. Silk’n Tightra (currently on Indiegogo as a kickstarter campaign) This is a product that addresses laxity, dryness and incontinence with bipolar radiofrequency energy that treats the vaginal walls.

LOW TECH Fingers – as low tech as it gets. Insert your fingers into your vagina (start with 2) and see what you feel – do you feel a hug and a drawing in when you do a kegel or do you feel something push down on your fingers? You can also have your partner use his/her fingers and provide you feedback. A penis – if you have a male partner their penis can take the place of a ball or a device. Does he feel a hugging sensation and a drawing up? Luna Beads – if you are going to use balls I recommend you find ones that have strings for removal. Those that don’t, require you to bear down when it comes time to take them out which can be detrimental to the pelvic floor. Jade Eggs – there are mixed reviews from professionals regarding the use of jade eggs. They can provide similar benefits to ben wa balls and luna beads and I again stress the importance of having a string to help with removal. So kegel balls – should you use them? Before you invest in any device, invest in a pelvic floor physiotherapist. This is hands down the most underused women’s health resource we have. They can tell you how to do a kegel, what aspect you should focus on and if a kegel device would be of benefit to you are not.

Finding Timeless Beauty in a New You

I

A M A N DA' S S T O RY By DR. KELVIN P. MAH t’s that time of year again when Spring begins to bloom. We can all relate to the anxieties that come with change. Whether it’s the seasons changing or starting a new phase in your life, change is inevitable. It’s how we react to change that defines us as people. Many of my patients come to me at a crossroads and it’s an honour to guide them through a very personal journey.

teenager. In high school she had some cosmetic bonding done on her front teeth. This procedure is not an ideal long term solution and consequently, this resulted in three repairs over the years. Amanda explained, “I have done numerous things to my teeth over the years to try and achieve the look I’ve always wanted but it always fell short.” What Amanda was looking for in her smile was an esthetic solution that was durable and didn’t stain.

Amanda first came in to see me last July. She was a marketing director at Blanche MacDonald, a fashion, makeup, and beauty school. Prior to that she was a regional manager at L’Oreal, the cosmetic/beauty company. She was obviously immersed in beauty and appearance but was entering a much more significant phase in her life. Amanda was pregnant at the time and about to give birth to her second daughter, Sienna. Becoming a new mom again brought a profound happiness but Amanda felt that her smile did not reflect this.

As I do with all my patients, I began the process with a simple question, “Amanda, what do you want?”

“Dr. Mah was recommended to me by a dental hygienist that I met while taking my daughter to swim lessons. She had never worked with Dr. Mah but had heard of him from working in the industry,” Amanda recalled. Amanda had dreamed about a smile makeover since she was a

Her answer was very telling, “I’ve always wanted a perfect celebrity smile. I have always been told that I have a nice smile, but I’ve always been self conscious ever since I was young. With my friends, I’m social and outgoing. I want a perfect, white, symmetrical smile that’s just as outgoing.” Once again, a similar pattern that I’ve heard over the years presented itself: the disconnection we have with how we perceive ourselves and how we would like to be perceived. This prevents us from feeling confident in expressing our true self and is one of the most under appreciated concerns that people have. Its effects are often deep rooted and can limit one from reaching one’s potential. It’s up to health care providers, like myself, to

create an environment where we can help people feel comfortable enough to discuss and express these and other concerns. Since she was pregnant at the time, we elected to do our preliminary investigation. This started with a comprehensive examination and collection of records including detailed photographs. Upon review with Amanda, we got a clear picture of what she wanted her smile to look like and to say about herself. Don’t forget that smiles have their own personalities. Through often subtle design modifications, we can have a smile appear very dominant, outgoing, or softer and demure. It was critical that I understood how Amanda wanted to be perceived. Her smile must, at the very least, match that but, ideally, complement how she wanted to be perceived as social and outgoing. I worked with my dental laboratory and we made models of Amanda’s teeth that included a model of her proposed smile based on our extensive consultations. We worked with Amanda as she suggested some minor changes. When we finalized her model, she expressed satisfaction and couldn’t wait to get started after she gave birth and settled in with her newborn daughter, Sienna. “I felt like it was family. They took note about the personal details that I shared about my family and seemed to truly care about how I felt. Dr. Mah was very careful and took his time with my smile transformation, which I appreciate because it’s a big deal,” Amanda proclaimed. When spring arrived, we started by brightening her overall smile with Zoom Bleaching, which allowed us to whiten her smile in a single visit to our office. The following step was preparing her teeth for ten porcelain veneers. These restorations

BEFORE

would provide her with a colour stable, durable smile that will last for years. We also did some minor refinement of the shape of her gums around some of her teeth. The gums act like a “frame” around the “artwork”, which are your teeth, and can enhance or detract from the overall smile. This step is often overlooked resulting in a lack of symmetry that can prevent a smile from being really spectacular. After completion, we brought Amanda back to obtain feedback and make any minor modifications. “People don’t notice that I’ve had work done on my teeth, but they have been saying how nice I look. I have gotten many compliments lately at how beautiful and happy I look,” she expressed. “Not only is their space beautiful, but the staff are warm, welcoming, and understanding. I definitely would recommend them to my family, friends, and colleagues. I’ve already started.” It is so gratifying for us to hear that Amanda feels great! She no longer needs to feel self conscious about smiling. “I am very happy with my new smile. I openly talk about it, too. I feel more confident. I was always told that I have a nice smile and I am a happy person who smiles a lot, but always has confidence issues with the way my smile looked in person and in photos. The work Dr. Mah and his team did has exceeded my expectations.” I feel she can now fully reach her potential as a confident new mom. Amanda still works in the beauty industry as the co-owner of Babes About Beauty and is a true testament to what we do. I felt wonderful satisfaction in knowing I’ve been able to facilitate positive change in another person. Thank you Amanda for allowing me to honour my mission of “Enriching lives, one smile at a time”.
