Education is the N THINGS TO KEEP IN MIND WHEN

ost of us wish to look and feel our best. Whether it is a more contoured body, or a more glowing vibrant and youthful appearance, your beauty goals are very important. There are numerous treatments readily available to you.

emphasis should always be on education and learning. The team member you are meeting with should first be concerned with explaining the procedure, benefits, risks, experience as well as everything else that goes into the treatment.

It’s a big decision that should not be taken lightly. With so many MediSpa’s at your fingertips, just how do you select the ideal one for you?

OBJECTIVE REVIEWS AS WELL AS PAST RESULTS

When it involves your face and body, you want to ensure that you are partnering with the best professional specialists available. Lets take a look at numerous components that you should keep in mind as you examine your options.

QUALIFIED AND EXPERIENCED TEAM This might seem like a no-brainer, however we believe it is essential to discuss. The numerous treatments and procedures that are readily available require qualified professionals to ensure they are done properly as well as safely. Make certain that the MediSpa you select has talented and highly experienced professionals and support team.

When it comes to doing your research it is very important to rely upon the numerous resources at your disposal. Read trusted and objective client reviews about the Medi Spa and their professionals which can paint a real picture of their culture, experience, approach, services as well as results they deliver.

STATE-OF-THE-ART EQUIPMENT AND TECHNOLOGY While the skill, expertise and experience of specialists are essential components of a great MediSpa, the technology used is equally as important. While it is not imperative that every piece of equipment is brand-new, hygiene and effectiveness should never be overlooked. Don’t be shy to inquire about the equipment.

REVIEW THEIR CREDENTIALS

TRANSPARENCY

You are placing your beauty in the hands of these individuals so make certain you are selecting a team of professionals that know exactly what they’re doing, are committed to your safety/security and your health and wellness.

The MediSpa that you select should be open and honest with all information. They should discuss the positive and negative elements of any type of treatment, show you the equipment they will be using and should explain the process in detail.

FOCUS ON EDUCATION AND LEARNING, NOT SALES

GET ALL THE INFORMATION

Have you ever been to an establishment where everyone seems to be out to sell you? That’s not the feeling you should get when entering a Medi Spa. When you schedule your initial skin health assessment, the

8 | FRESH MAGAZINE | freshmag.ca

Whether you are making a phone call or sitting down for an a individualized skin health assessment, come prepared with questions that can help you become more informed and prepared to make the ideal decision.

Questions that you may want to ask: • How long have they been in operation? • Is there a doctor onsite? • Who will be performing my procedure? What are their credentials? How many of these treatments have they performed? • What are their sterilization procedures? • What kind of results can I expect from my treatment? • Recovery time for my treatment? Do you provide assistance? • How does your team remain current on new procedures, technologies, skills and techniques?

DON’T FOCUS SOLELY ON COST Try not to choose simply based on price. Most reputable MediSpa’s offer the latest treatments and comparable prices. If the treatment seems too good to be true, they probably aren’t using the best technologies and products to do your treatments. “You get what you pay for.”

THINK ABOUT YOUR TREATMENT GOALS Take a few minutes to collect your thoughts before your appointment. This will help ensure that you are more able to effectively communicate your needs. Do you want to diminish skin redness, look younger or reduce acne?

LET GO OF PRECONCEIVED NOTIONS If you have had a bad experience at a MediSpa in the past, you should communicate that, keeping in mind that times have changed and therapies have truly improved. An unsuccessful treatment in the past does not mean it will not work in the hands of another.

New Year Resolutions, Start-Overs and Do-Overs By CONNIE PRETULA

A

ccording to statistics, nearly half of us made New Year’s resolutions and fewer than 10% will actually achieve them. Ouch! Grim odds for anyone who pledged to improve their health in 2016. Yes, those age-old resolutions to get fit, eat better and lose weight are still the most popular. Why? One likely reason is, during the hustle of the holidays, these are the things we push aside while we’re shopping, spending time with family, and traveling. I can’t remember the last time I made a New Year’s Resolution. I stopped long ago because it didn’t work, and who needs added pressure? For some people (especially us goal-oriented types), a failed resolution can actually be detrimental to their physical and emotional well-being. The good news is, your health doesn’t need to be tied to the calendar. Whether you made a New Year’s Resolution or feel it’s time to take on a healthier lifestyle, the best time to start, is right now.

5 TIPS FOR A NOT-SO-NEW YEAR’S RESOLUTION

1

2

10 | FRESH MAGAZINE | freshmag.ca

Remove temptations. It’s all too easy to fall into old habits, especially when

you’re stressed, running late, or too tired to cook. Get rid of items in your cupboards, fridge and freezer that don’t support your healthier lifestyle.

Share it. Let your friends and family know you are committed to improving your health. It can help you stay on track and might even inspire others to join you. For example, pass along a related book or article you enjoyed, share recipes, or blog about your journey. Organize a cooking night with friends or family and include the kids. It can be a lot of fun learning new ways to create tasty healthy dishes.

4

Connie is a seasoned public speaker and passionate advocate for women’s health issues. She lives in Vancouver and serves clients throughout the Metro Vancouver area. To learn more about Connie, visit ConniePretula.com.

It’s best to set small, achievable goals and gradually progress toward key objectives. For example, introduce one new healthy food choice every week (I recommend more green leafy vegetables because we all need to get more of those in) or commit to trying two new healthy recipes every month (check out my blog for inspiration).

3

As a Holistic Nutritional Consultant, Connie Pretula guides her clients to better living through better food choices. Her passion for nutrition stems from personal experience and competitive body building. Connie combines her formal training with self taught knowledge from years of extensive research to help others address nagging health issues, nurture healthy eating habits, and transition to new lifestyles. She provides straightforward advice and unwavering support to her clients.

Break it down.

Think ahead. Change can be difficult—it takes planning to adopt

new eating habits. Meal planning is the most important (and often overlooked) determinant of success. It’s easy to cook up a tasty meal when your cupboard is stocked with certain canned food items and dry goods.

Stay positive. Don’t get down on yourself if you occasionally slip up— everyone does! Remember, any step in the right direction is a good one.

5

I look at every day as an opportunity to start fresh. As kids we called them do-overs or start-overs – why not apply the same thinking to your health? Once you start gaining momentum, it gets easier…and feels great. If you need help getting on track, talk to a holistic nutritionist about your goals and specific steps to help you achieve them. Join me at The Wellness Show at the Vancouver Convention Centre. I will be talking more about this topic as part of the Women & Wellness Seminar Series on February 13, 2016 at 2:15 pm. I would love to meet my readers in person and have you in my audience.

Vitamin A I N F U S I O N

P E E L

Restore, Remodel and Rejuvena te By AMANDA BEISEL

W

hen we hear the word “peel,” we tend to immediately think “chemical peel,” but in the past few years, new approaches to peeling and rejuvenating the skin have emerged. One of the most effective and innovative of these is the vitamin A infusion peel. This non-acid peel is transforming the way people think about peels.

THE SUPERIOR PEEL The vitamin A infusion peel is a non-acid retinaldehyde peel that is boosted with powerful antioxidants and nutrients that help repair and remodel the skin. Retinaldehyde is the most potent and least irritating form of vitamin A. The vitamin A infusion peel is customized to meet each client’s specific skin needs and concerns. The skincare practitioner creates a custom blend of antioxidants and nutrients that is mixed with the concentrated vitamin A prior to application. The vitamin A peel is extremely safe and tolerated well by all skin types. This diverse peel is not just used for anti-aging, it is also an effective treatment option for acne, rosacea, melasma and hyper-pigmentation. The practitioner customizes the peel to meet the skin needs of each client.

THE BENEFITS The vitamin A infusion peel works much differently than a chemical peel. Rather than peeling from the outer layers, it works from the inside out building healthy new cells that increase cell turnover causing the skin to shed the top layer. This is made possible using a concentrated form of vitamin A that is liposome-coated to help it easily pass through the skin barrier. Once the vitamin A has penetrated deep within the skin,

12 | FRESH MAGAZINE | freshmag.ca

it stimulates the formation of new, healthy cells and the magic begins. Here are just a few of the benefits you can expect: • Stimulates collagen • Increased capillary flow to help increase food supply to the skin • Thickens the dermis preventing the skin from thinning • Calms and reduces acne • Calms mild rosacea • Lightens hyperpigmentation and melasma • Reduction in fine lines and improved skin tone and elasticity • Normalized oil production

THE PEEL EXPERIENCE One of the best features of the vitamin A peel is that it is relaxing and rejuvenating. The treatment experience is similar to a facial but the results are clinical. You can take the treatment a step further with the addition of cosmetic acupuncture. Plus, if you have extended benefits for acupuncture, a portion of this treatment can be covered. Amanda Beisel is the owner of the awardwinning SKN Holistic Rejuvenation Clinic in Yaletown. She is a registered acupuncturist specializing in Cosmetic acupuncture and medical skin needling. d a y SKIN: Aside from a touch of concealer to cover up blemishes, the sheen on your skin should come from your moisturizer. Use little to no foundation, and only blot your T-zone with powder—let the rest of your face shine away! LIPS: Take your favourite bold colour and blot it on your lips, rubbing it in with your finger until you build a light stain. CHEEKS: Cream blush or bronzer blends best on dewy skin. You can also use the colour you are using on your lips to add colour to your cheeks. EYES: Subtly define your brows by brushing through with a brow mascara. Take any neutral, long-lasting cream shadow and blend it all over the lid, up to your crease. Finish with a good layer of mascara, and skip the eyeliner to maintain that barely-there look. n i g h t To transition into a super-easy, lowmaintenance night look, take the blackest kohl eyeliner you can find and line your top lash line. Smuldge with your fingers, a cotton swab or a blending brush to create a smoldering effect on top of your neutral cream shadow. Line your top and bottom water lines, and add more depth with a sweep of neutral shadow along your bottom lashes. Finish off with false lashes if you want to add a bit of drama!

Let Go! C

hanges are shaking us down to our foundations lately. It is almost like there is a deeper reality waiting to be discovered. Can you feel it? We are truly at the height of opportunity to wake up and grow. Relationships, friendships, situations that no longer served me just fell away in 2015.

Redirection is a reminder to simply surrender and let go of control. I know… easier said than done, right? We are guided to release and be free and open to the possibility of pure consciousness, perfect balance, simplicity, bliss and wholeness, all of which are our birthright. The constant breaking down and building up highlighted the things that I needed to let go of in order to move forward and live my life with soul, desire and more ease. How do you do this?

GET GROUNDED Disconnect from the city and other distractions like computers, iPhones and Facebook. Ground back to your roots in the earth and what surrounds you. Take off your shoes. Feel the earth beneath your feet. Out of nature, your health, vitality, creativity and inspiration will return. The sand, rocks, grass, or snow remind you of the unpredictability of nature and life. It is a cycle. Trust it. Go with it. Feel it. Breathe deeply, fill the body with fresh vital oxygen and feel the stress melt away. Believe it.

SHOUT IT OUT Have you ever just wanted to SCREAM like you did when you were 3 years old? Hali Love, a wellness coach, urges people to express their unexpressed anger. Shout at the top of your lungs on a hilltop or in a pillow; try yelling under water in the ocean or in your bathtub. A primal way to release. Let go of anger, frustration and tension! Believe it or not, temper tantrums did serve their purpose in our younger years. Express yourself! Free yourself.

By SHAUNA IRELAND

WRITE IT DOWN AND BURN IT UP Tracy Clark, a guide in creating miracles and removing limitations, emphasizes the importance of this simple, effective daily exercise. List all of the things that bother you throughout the day, and then get rid of the paper and release those thoughts, emotions and memories. Rip it up or set it on fire! The writing of information down daily does not allow the body to hold onto the energy for a long time. Good-bye to the old and hello to the new!

CUT THE CORD Have you ever tried to let go of someone but feel the energetic connection to them? You know this relationship no longer serves you. It is time to let go. Shayne Bennett, an energy coach, suggests to imagine holding a balloon with the person inside. Let go of the string attached to the balloon and watch it drift away filled with love and forgiveness. The symbolic meaning of releasing the string releases the energetic attachment. The healing power of visualization. The transformative power of forgiveness.

FORCED BREATHING Jana Webb, the founder of Joga, teaches forced breathing exercises. The first time I tried this, I wanted to throw up! That means it is working! It’s about detoxification at the cellular level – allowing not only the internal organs to rid of toxic waste, but subsequently ridding the body of emotions we tend to hold in those areas of the body. The inhale is a prep at the beginning- then 30 forced exhales snapping the belly button back. At the finish point, inhale new and replace the old. Let go and let it flow by trying one or all of these exercises. You may feel lighter or be softer; your body may change; you may create new opportunities; you may find new love and attract all of your deepest desires.

“The roots of getting what you want in life are in standing up for yourself, and what better place to do it than the doctor’s office.”

o here’s a story: A single mother of four starts a nutritional supplement business out of her garage, then another, and another, mortgaging everything she has to make it work, and winds up blowing the lid off the simmering discontent that is the stew of women’s health concerns. Frustrated with mainstream medicine, women begin turning in droves to the solutions and information offered by this formidable, pioneering force. Thus is born Lorna Vanderhaeghe Health Solutions, named by Profit Magazine the 35th fastest growing company in Canada in 2013, and in 2014 acquired by vitamin colossus Jamieson Laboratories. By now a grandmother of eight, Vanderhaeghe remains committed to her passion, using nutrition as medicine, and her goal: to reach, educate and empower as many women as possible to take control of their health and their lives. Lorna Vanderhaeghe shares the details of her story with Fresh, and what a story it is.

BIRTH OF A PASSION “In the late 70s, after I stopped breastfeeding my eldest daughter, she developed severe eczema. We went to the family doctor, the pediatrician, the skin specialist, and all they could recommend was cortisone cream. I read the side effects and discovered cortisone was unsafe for long-term use. I kept asking doctors if it could be related to her diet, because her skin was beautiful until I stopped breastfeeding. They said no, no, nothing to do with diet. I had never been in a health food store before, but I went into one and was told my baby had a GLA fatty acid deficiency. So we put GLA in her food, rubbed it on her belly, stopped giving her dairy and wheat, and within three weeks her skin cleared up. It transformed my life, and I decided to look for a career in natural health.”

JANUARY/FEBRUARY 2016

DISCOVERING HEALTH “I took a job at Flora Distributors, who also owned Alive Magazine, and at the same time went back to school to complete my degree in science and nutrition. I couldn’t get enough science. By then I had four children, and soon I would become a single mother. I then had an opportunity to work for the Canadian Schizophrenia Foundation, headed by the late Dr Abram Hoffer, MD, PhD, who also ran the Journal of Orthomolecular Medicine. The JOM is where all the original pioneers in nutritional medicine published their work. There was a group of absolutely brilliant people who set the foundation for what we call the health food industry today. I was so fortunate to work with them, and I read thousands of papers on using nutritional supplements to treat disease. It was probably the most exciting time of my career.”

BUSINESS BEGINNINGS “I began running a small nutritional supplement company basically out of my garage, with my kids packing boxes, while also working for Alive. Around that point, I was asked to write my first book. The result was The Immune System Cure, which became an international best seller published in six countries and four languages. That set me off on my writing career—I now have thirteen books on multiple subjects. I began to do a lot of radio, television, seminars and public education.”

A PIVOTAL MOMENT “Many women came to my seminars and asked what they should do for anxiety, heavy periods, hair loss, hormone problems and more. It was a pivotal moment for me when a woman in the audience stood up one day and said, Lorna, why don’t you make a line of women’s nutritional supplements, because

it’s really hard to find the ingredients you’re recommending. So I started a company with the brand Lorna Vanderhaeghe. I was working with a very good friend, with whom I did not have a contract. A few years later he decided the product line was his, and I ended up having to rebrand and start all over again. I developed Lorna Vanderhaeghe Health Solutions with all female sales reps doing tremendous work to help women achieve optimal wellness, giving women the power to ask their doctors for what they really need. Our company motto is women helping women, and we really take that to heart.”

THE POWER TO QUESTION “Too often, a woman will walk into her doctor’s office and say I think I have something wrong with my hormones, and be put off. She might get a prescription for an anti-depressant, or be told it’s just age or stress. Part of our company’s mandate is to educate women so they can start asking for what they want and questioning treatments they feel aren’t working. Once women start questioning medical treatments, the food they eat, the things they put on their bodies, it changes everything. The roots of getting what you want in life are in standing up for yourself, and what better place to do it than the doctor’s office.”

HORMONE HAVOC “Women are being bombarded by environmental estrogens, in everything from cosmetics to pesticides in our food, to chronic stress which elevates our internal estrogen levels. This estrogen exposure leads to health conditions like breast lumps, menstrual problems, infertility, ovarian cysts, endometriosis, uterine fibroids, uterine polyps, and ultimately breast, ovarian and cervical cancer. And it’s not only women— men with too much estrogen get beer bellies, breasts and erectile dysfunction.

freshmag.ca | FRESH MAGAZINE | 21

“You never know if you influence people, but I can tell you this: A lot of mainstream male doctors call me when their wives get sick.”

Many female conditions are treated with the birth control pill, which contains seven times the estrogen we would give to postmenopausal women. It’s unfortunate that the pill, which gave women so much freedom, has now become a noose around our necks. Fourteen year olds are put on it for acne; they don’t come off until they’re 32 and then they can’t get pregnant.”

A DIFFICULT DECADE “Everybody talks about menopause, but women in their forties have the biggest problems. During the ten or so years prior to menopause (called perimenopause), estrogen levels skyrocket. Weight gain is common, as are thyroid problems and heavy periods; wrinkles set in as we start to lose collagen. It’s a rough time! With two heavy periods in a row, women can become anemic and experience hair loss and low energy. Low thyroid also starts to set in around this time, which causes weight gain and depression. Then we have women who have built their careers and waited to have children, and are trying to get pregnant in their forties.”

BALANCE WITH SUPPLEMENTS “The first product I developed, called ESTROsmart, is for women with estrogen overload hormone problems. I am proud of this product as it changes lives: periods become effortless, acne disappears and the ingredients have all been shown to stop our good estrogen from converting into the cancer-causing estrogen. Women should also take vitamin D3, a multivitamin and fatty acids. Everyone is on a fish oil kick, but fish oil does not contain GLA, which is the fatty acid for beautiful skin. As we get closer to fifty we stop being able to make GLA from our food, and our skin loses that youthful luminosity. These supplements provide a foundation; if you have other problems we need to add to that.”

22 | FRESH MAGAZINE | freshmag.ca

NUTRITION FOR ENERGY “If you want to feel vibrant, healthy and have beautiful skin, the majority of your diet should be dark-coloured vegetables. Eat protein at every meal to control food cravings. Your breakfast should be only protein to kick-start your fat-burning furnace. No fruit juice; it just elevates blood sugar and makes us fat. Include good healthy fats like extra virgin olive oil and coconut butter. Limit fruit intake—especially if you have belly fat.”

FROM FREAK TO CHIC “I was talking about using food and nutrients for disease prevention back in the day when people thought you were a quack for doing so; you were a health food ‘freak.’ Now, the mainstream companies are getting interested in nutritional medicine. Fish oil, CoQ10 and vitamin D are now being recommended by everyone. I take it as a compliment. Obviously, we health food freaks did our job! You never know if you influence people, but I can tell you this: a lot of mainstream male doctors call me when their wives get sick.”

very bad negotiators. If a woman is a good business person she is generally labelled a bitch. I’m very determined, I know what my company needs, and I don’t take no for an answer. I also have an incredibly supportive [second] husband who has given me nothing but good business skills.”

EXPANDED HORIZONS “In June of 2014, I sold my company to Jamieson Laboratories, which is the oldest and most trusted nutritional supplement company in Canada. We were growing so quickly that I could not go to the next level without some kind of financing. I have a completely autonomous relationship with Jamieson; we run our business as a separate division. With their support, we can now reach more women than ever before. We will continue to build our educational platform, which is the most important thing for us. We will continue to respond whenever women ask us for help with their health concerns. And we will continue to make superior products that go above and beyond what’s required by Health Canada regulations.”

THE FEMALE ENTREPRENEUR

THE ULTIMATE MOTIVATOR

“There’s a reason the business world continues to be dominated by men: women are looking after the children. Women are under so much pressure to be the best mother, the best lover, the best house cleaner, the best cook, the best entrepreneur… it is a horrific amount of stress. Something has to give, and it’s usually the woman’s health.

“I love what I do. There is nothing more rewarding than helping people. Any time I think about retiring, I think of a woman I met at one of my seminars. She brought me to the back of the room, unbuttoned her shirt and showed me where her breasts used to be. She said, whenever you feel like giving up, I want you to remember me. I had all the symptoms of estrogen dominance you talked about, but I didn’t realize what it was and ended up with breast cancer. She said, you have to keep talking to people because the doctors aren’t helping us, and women don’t know they have power and the control to change their lives.” ___________________________________

“There are very few women who risk running their own businesses. I risked it all: I mortgaged everything we owned to make it happen. As a single mother I needed to feed my family, so I couldn’t fail. It’s difficult, and I think women are notorious for being

IMPERFECTION IS BEAUTIFUL. I wanted to honour the beauty, resilience and power in women coming through the other side of a dark time. There can be so much beauty even in the deepest struggles we face, and what emerges when we overcome these is the most beautiful part of womanhood. There is beauty in the struggle, and even more beautiful is a woman’s ability to overcome. A woman’s struggle creates strength, and a strong woman is vulnerable & fearless... 5 WAYS TO STOP THE WAR WITH FOOD AND YOUR BODY By SAMANTHA SKELLY

The entire diet industry is a glorified toxic vortex communicating to you that you aren’t whole and that something needs to change and that there is something missing. You jump on the next miracle diet plan with hopes that this one will be the ultimate key that unlocks sustained happiness and personal fulfillment. We need to take a stand, but more importantly take a reality check and understand we are victims to the growth of the bottom lines of the diet industry. This is a sad social reality, but conversely, we have the power to completely change the story and trajectory within ourselves. You’re not hungry for food; you’re hungry for an emotion. You aren’t meeting your basic primal emotional needs at a fundamental level so you’re meeting the needs with food. You know it’s physically and emotionally damaging, but you can’t stop. Here are 5 ways you can end the war—today.

You might think that food is the problem, but that’s far from the truth—it’s a much deeper and darker emotional issue. “I just want to eat like a normal person.” “I want to stop fighting food all the time and eat for health and hunger.” “I have no idea what loving my body even feels like.” “The number on the scale indicates whether I’m going to have a good day or not.” Sound familiar? We are in an epidemic. Women are at war. A gruesome and bloody war with food and their bodies. Everyday women are being openly objectified which is sending messages to our sub-conscious saying we aren’t good enough, pretty enough and especially not skinny enough. We live in a world where the number on the scale determines our level of self-worth and quality of life. This needs to end.

1 2 3 4 5

Ask yourself, ‘What am I actually hungry for?’ When you are about to use food to numb the pain and emotional anxiety you have from the day, take a beat and ask yourself what your body really needs. It’s not food. You’re filling an emotional void. Take a moment, get curious and ask the question. Breathe. Breathing allows us to connect mind and body together. When mind and body operate in one unit, there is pure inner power. Binge eating is a result of being disconnected from your body. Observe your emotions. Is there pain, sadness or anger? What are you feeling physically? Write it down. Binge eating suppresses the emotion and blocks us from tapping into what our bodies are asking for. Sit with the pain of the emotions. Don’t distract—just be. Binge eating is a call for connection. We as humans crave connection, and we are starved of connection with how we operate today. Ask yourself, when was the last time you had deep connection, and how can you create it? Don’t distract again. Often, when we try to derail binge eating, we find ourselves consumed in another activity. This isn’t how we are going to effectively heal emotionally. We need to address the pain—ask it questions, get curious about it, journal about it, and truly heal it from within.

Counting My Blessings T H I S

By DR. KELVIN P. MAH

s 2016 begins, I want to thank all of my patients for another great year! Earlier this month, I took some time to reflect on the wonderful year we had here at Smile City Square Dental. I truly have an amazing team of colleagues who motivate me to work towards my mission every day. Not only do I get to work with some of the most talented individuals, I am also able to fulfill my dreams thanks to all of my patients who put their faith and trust

in me to give them the absolute best dental care. There is nothing that satisfies me more than helping others reach their smile goals and revealing their full potential. Some of you are new patients, and some of you I have known for many years. Nonetheless, each and every one of my patients is unique to me and I enjoy getting to know you and your stories. I hope that with every visit to my dental centre, you are able to feel a strengthened connection with myself and my team. After all, my work philosophy is to always focus on the patient—everything I do revolves around you!

SHILAN’S BEFORE + AFTER

I

was reminded of this earlier in the year with one of my patients, Shilan. Her smile transformation began when she was referred to Smile City Square by a close friend, but was hesitant and had some reservations about going to a new dental centre. I ensured her that I would do my best to get her the smile that she wanted. It took some time during our consultation, but I finally got Shilan to open up about her desires and I was able to really understand her story. We all have unique interpretations of “beautiful” and it was crucial that I listen to exactly what she wanted, not to what I assumed she wanted. She had extremely healthy teeth but was insecure about the “gumminess” of her smile. After reshaping her gums, I could instantly see how uplifted Shilan was by this transformation. She came back to tell me that her smile

now truly reflected how she felt about herself: confident, proud, and beautiful. I’m so grateful to have met Shilan, as her transformation was yet another reminder to me of why I became so passionate about the dental industry in the first place: to help make people’s dreams into reality. Many of you are aware of how deep my appreciation is for the art of dentistry. This practice has significantly impacted my life in so many ways. I’ve noticed over the years, with myself and with my patients, that being aware and active about oral health makes a huge difference in the overall health of your body. Often the first thing people will notice when they look at you is your smile!

L I S A’ S BEFORE + AFTER

O

ne of my patients, Lisa, has a great story that demonstrates the importance of staying both physically and emotionally healthy (these go hand in hand). Lisa was the winner of my dental transformation contest this year. I was blown away by her inspiring story, and I am humbled that I have had the chance to get to know her. I brought her in for a consultation so I could identify her needs as a patient, and make sure I could give her my best care. Lisa had been recovering from a negative past, and wanted to continue on a new, rejuvenating path that included having a smile that she could proudly show off. We started her transformation by whitening her teeth, then re-shaping her gums, and finished off by closing the gaps between her front teeth. Putting in the work to prepare every detail of every treatment was well worth it after seeing how thrilled Lisa was at her amazing new smile. She is now on a brighter, happier path and is never looking back. This example goes to show that having a healthy mouth is an important part of having a healthy life.

None of Smile City Square Dental’s successes would have been possible without the tremendous work of my dental team. They definitely deserve recognition for the effort they put in every day to create a warm and friendly environment for our patients. I am proud to say that our office environment reflects the services that we provide—we aim to make you feel relaxed, comfortable, and surrounded by natural beauty. We hope you enjoyed your visits with us this past year, and we look forward to seeing you again soon. Reflecting on these moments has given me even more motivation to strive towards my mission of enriching lives, one smile at a time. So, as the ground gets whiter and the lights get brighter, we hope the same goes for your teeth! In all seriousness, I hope you take a few moments during this special time of year to reflect on your own accomplishments and count your blessings. As well, ensure your family stays healthy all year round! Best wishes from all of us at Smile City Square Dental! Hope you had a joyous holiday season and good health in the New Year.

THE

Challenges, Busin

By MAUREEN MCGRATH

A

s a child, I never imagined I would grow up and become a sex educator. Of course, sex was never even discussed in my Irish Catholic family, although some must have been going on as I did grow up with six siblings! It was taboo then, and it still is today. But the bottom line is sex was never ever discussed in my house or many other houses I imagine. In nursing school, there was very little focus on sexual health. When I became the head nurse of a labour and delivery unit at a local community hospital, sex was never mentioned as part of the education provided to new moms except to refrain from it for the first six weeks after birth. That was it. We were mum on the mention of any of the sexual health issues that commonly occur postpartum like painful sex or the overwhelming fatigue that may lead to a low sexual desire. It seemed to me that sexual health was one of the most important aspects of health and no one was talking about it. I could see that there was a need. There was a shame associated with the mere mention of sex whether people were having it or not and I set out to fulfill that need. Believe me: when you want to talk about sex, there will be challenges. To build this business has taken persistence, courage, loss of friends and exposure to the most horrific and sociopathic workplace bully. My business model was contract work in clinical research and education. The clinical work went incredibly well and I was mentored by a male physician to whom I am forever grateful. As for education, I was fortunate enough to become a regular health contributor at CKNW. I soon realized I loved this kind of education because I could reach the masses with a little discussed subject. I did have some pushback, mainly from men who would suggest I not discuss the vagina. They did not like the term and it really turned them off. How could I discuss female sexuality without talking about the vagina? The vagina is a most beautiful organ where we not only experience incredible pleasure

36 | FRESH MAGAZINE | freshmag.ca

through receiving a penis or hand or other device, but it also delivers life. I would plod on and pay no heed. That was not the only pushback I received. Many times, I was asked not to say words like “urine” or “dryness.” Mainly, it was middleaged men asking me not to say words that made them uncomfortable. I remember the time when I did a commercial for a new sexual desire product. I believe in being straight up, so when I said on the commercial, “ladies, if you are not having sex with your husband, someone else is,” women called into the station and said I was blaming women for men’s bad behaviour. Without even speaking to me, the commercial was pulled by the male decisionmakers. Ex post facto. Done. No discussion. Decision made.

unrealistic deadlines of which every one I met. He lost his temper, threw objects at me in front of colleagues who said nothing. No one stood up for me. The worst of it was when he locked me in my office and removed the door handle. I was cowering in the corner as he hovered over me, screaming at me. Grown men and women with law degrees and PhDs saw what he was doing through the glass, and no one did anything to stop him. They walked around like wind-up dolls. I finally escaped and texted my resignation. What I should have done was call the police, but I did not realize at the time that it was an option. After all was said and done, I documented eighty incidents of workplace bullying and sexual harassment over a fourweek period.

Many times, I was asked not to say words like “urine” or “dryness.” Mainly, it was middle-aged men asking me not to say words that made them uncomfortable. But I could handle all of that. I know that the subject of sexuality is uncomfortable for many to discuss. What was far more of a challenge was with a contract I took with a biotech startup company. When they say it is too good to be true, it is. The CEO at the time was horrific. He hired people who were otherwise unemployable. One mistake he made was that although I had some time to do this contract work, I was far from unemployable so I was not vulnerable like everyone else he hired. Workplace bullying is a campaign and this was no exception. The bully was a former politician, so he was well versed in campaign. Attack from all sides. He also sexually harassed me by referring to me as “hot” or saying “go home and do what you do best.” Then the workplace bullying began. He belittled and berated me at meetings. He worked me to the bone. He called me after hours and had

I would come to learn that this bully had abused 22 women in the workplace over the past decade. Once I resigned, he targeted his executive assistant who had just joined the company. She left after eight weeks. He abused another female employee so badly, she became suicidal. The carnage at that workplace was tragic and most people, mainly men, did nothing to help the women. After filing a complaint with the human rights tribunal, I retained the services of the best employment law firm this city has to offer—Moore, Edgar and Lyster—and received the highest settlement ever awarded in BC for workplace bullying. Unfortunately, the bully carries on and has abused more women since my departure. I became stronger after much needed healing as I suffered hair and weight loss, heart palpitations and insomnia as a result of the bullying. However, I did have to take a

AND

World of Sex

look at myself in hopes that that would never happen again (unfortunately, it did). Targets of bullies are hard-working, competent and productive. Targets of workplace bullies are generally sunny personalities who are wellliked by their colleagues. I know what you are thinking, if you were so well-liked by your colleagues why didn’t any of them stick up for you? Well, the CEO exploited them. They were all afraid of him and on some level, him abusing me made them feel better about themselves. The human condition. The one good thing about having this experience is that you learn to recognize it early and know exactly what to do. A few years later another colleague began his campaign of workplace bullying. He started sending me mixed messages, making a decision at a meeting one day and sending an entirely different email about that decision the next. He began to nitpick my work and withheld information from me that was important to patient care. He made up lies about me. I had been working with this colleague for a while and although I had heard some negative things about him, I decided I would make my own decision. I will never truly know why this colleague did this to me and I must admit that this one hurt. The good news was that I was able to nip it in the bud early on. I documented everything and confronted him about it. This approach allowed for me to continue on with this project and see it through to completion. It also made me stronger. Fortunately, I no longer work with him. So many patients tell me that they can tell me anything because they know that I will not judge them and that I will keep it confidential. I am often the first person they have ever told about childhood sexual abuse or other trauma. To be able to make significant changes in a person’s life or relationship with accurate information is so incredibly gratifying. I absolutely love the work that I do and am passionate about it. To say it hasn’t been easy is an understatement. It has required grit, persistence, courage and a sense of humour. I have made many sacrifices in many of my own relationships to get to where I am today. Then there is always the “money” question I get from men. They are often bewildered.

JANUARY/FEBRUARY 2016

“But how do you make money?” is a common question I hear from men. “Can you make money doing this work?” is another example. Recently, a male colleague of mine asked me if I made any money in front of another male colleague, who answered the question for him. He answered no. Have they never heard that sex sells? To be fair, men are not even aware of how these questions sound. They were socialized as the stronger sex and to bring home the bacon! Fortunately, the world is changing and women are becoming more successful in the workplace than ever before. To be successful in any business and make money in any field takes hard work, and you and I are no exception. Unfortunately, the reality is that it is harder for women to make money and men are flabbergasted when we do (they like it as long as we don’t make more... how ironic!). It takes a solid man to be with a woman who has a higher net worth or brings home more bacon! Last year, I incorporated and set up a notfor-profit society called Bladder Health BC (where I can say urine) and officially became a Huffington Post Blogger. My clinical practice is busier than ever and I am invited to speak about subjects relevant to sexuality about fifty times a year. This year, I hosted Hot Flash in the City to sold-out crowds in three cities to educate women about menopause, another taboo subject. I have finished writing a book about sexual health and am hoping to publish it this year.

Today, women need to have the courage and confidence to persevere in a man’s world because it is still very much a man’s world, especially in business. We have a tendency to underestimate our skills and value at home and in the workplace. We have to prove ourselves over and over for seventy percent of the pay men receive. When I am challenged in business or in life, I call on my feminine power which always served me well. It is knowing who I am and what I desire and require in business and life that ignites my sense of self, which includes all that encompasses my femininity, intellect, strength and sexuality. So ladies , go for it. Don’t be afraid to put on those sky-high pumps and plunging necklines. Walk it. Own it. It’s yours. You’ve earned it. Never be afraid to show anyone who you are or what you are made of. You go, girl! You may even surprise yourself! Has it been worth it? Indeed, it has. What do I say now about workplace bullying and sexual harassment? Go ahead, try me. I dare you. ___________________________________ Maureen McGrath is host of the CKNW Sunday Night Sex Show on NewsTalk 980.

I look forward to speaking at many events in 2016 from The Taboo Sex Show (where I will be hosting the CKNW Sunday Night Sex Show—a first), The Wellness Show February 12-14 at the Vancouver Convention Centre and at the TEDxStanleyPark 2016 where I will be speaking on “The Sexless Marriage” at the Queen Elizabeth Theatre. The question “can women have it all?” is a common one. From my experience, women can have a lot these days in terms of owning their sexuality, their own business, knowing what they need in their relationship and what they want for their family. That is not to say they can have all of that at the same time, but it may come at different times. It is the fine balance of embracing all that life has to offer that makes for happiness and success both in the bedroom and the boardroom.

Collaborating

Competing?

hile there has been a lot of buzz about various strategies for building your online presence, which is important, we cannot forget the importance of offline strategies and building our presence in our local community. I have found that having both inbound and outbound marketing strategies in place, combined with a solid marketing funnel, has been the most effective approach for building my business. So, out of my passion for connecting with people, and connecting people with others, I created Connect Now Business Network. I started with one group in the Lower Mainland three years ago, and now I have 12 chapters throughout BC, and growing. It’s expanding because people still love meeting face-to-face. I am a catalyst for connection and collaboration. There are many benefits to working with collaborators rather than battling competitors. For example, from which one are you more likely to get a referral? It’s healthier for you mentally and physically to spend your time on positive thinking and strategies, rather than being wrapped up in negative defensiveness. I’ve always found collaborating way more effective and enjoyable, and a win-win for everyone involved. Each person brings different gifts to the table. There is power in numbers, when creating a group of highly qualified people that produce quality results and move forward together. Here are 3 tips for building a collaborative community:

YOUR MESSAGE If you want to stand out in the crowd, you must have a one-of-akind message. When you truly differentiate yourself, you don’t have to compete. You are an amazing, vibrant, and smart person with your own unique story to tell, so tell IT. Generate engagement and opportunities. Inspire others, don’t conspire against others.

Remember, leaders build up, they don’t tear down. You are not portraying your story accurately, if you are busy tearing down someone else’s story.

YOUR REACH If you want to expand your reach, build bridges not walls. Anything and everything can be fixed through communication and collaboration. Assumptions are the best fuel for igniting bridges. Collaboration builds solid foundations, systems, and structures. Nurture flourishing alliances across your network. Create strong joint ventures, not broken junctures. Always strive to be inclusive, not divisive. Perhaps you need to repair some bridges – go for it! Don’t let your fear stop you from some great possibilities on the other side. Repaired and reinforced bridges are often strongest.

YOU If you want to rise above all the noise online and in your marketplace, don’t try to copy others. You will bring much more value to the world when you are authentic and flow through your business and your life as yourself. Why rely on someone else’s intuition to take you down your path. Their vision is for their journey. You won’t get to where YOU are supposed to be, by using the directions to someone else’s destination. Trust your own intuition. You have everything you need within you to lead you to your goals. Once you have your message, your reach, and yourself in place, then you have a community! Encourage a community of collaborators right from the beginning, and you will never have competitors. Some may be tempted to say collaborating is the new “competing.” But just take that mindset out of your strategy all together. I love my team of forward thinking leaders and all the people in my network who choose collaboration. You can’t shine your own light, if you are too busy trying to put out someone else’s. Make competing with you a weakness and collaborating with you a strength.

ASK THE WOW LADY HOW THE PANTYHOSE HOP LED TO B A N I S H I N G T H E B E L L Y FAT B L U E S By CHRISTINE AWRAM

W

e’ve all been there. You balance on one leg while you insert Foot A into a pair of pantyhose, and then switch legs to get the other side going with Foot B. Hopping on the opposite leg is a finely developed female skill when it comes to the art of wearing pantyhose. Hopefully you didn’t buy a reject brand, with the crotch hugging your knees. So there I was doing the Pantyhose Hop, but with a new development. I kept hopping until I ran into a wall, because I couldn’t get Foot B in. What on earth was getting in the way of my second leg? Was it my...stomach? Shriek of horror! Who stole my flat belly? Surely I’d been drugged and body parts had been switched in my sleep? Hormonal changes and stressed adrenals had conspired to pack on belly fat like a momma bear going into hibernation. It snuck up on me while I wasn’t looking. So while my pantyhose are now exiled to the bottom layer of my underwear drawer, in case of a sneaky counterattack, let’s talk about how I’m going to banish the belly fat blues.

ADRENAL GLANDS The adrenals are part of your backup support system during menopause, and chronic stress wipes them out before you get there. So the body holds onto more fat to have a ready supply of estrogen. Your abdomen is also a target for the stress hormone cortisol, so if you’re experiencing chronic stress your cortisol remains high and your body deposits more fat to the belly. Managing your stress and adrenals will help balance your hormones and eliminate belly fat. Some simple stress busters include quiet time, nature walks, deep breathing, meditation, walking, hydration, and regular breaks in your daily routine. Adding 1000mg of Vitamin B5 (pantothenic acid) to your supplement program also helps repair and rebalance your adrenals.

REFINED SUGAR A diet high in refined sugar leads straight to the belly. Why? Spikes in blood sugar lead to higher insulin levels, and the increased insulin will deposit fat directly on your tummy. The solution? Less sugar and carbs obviously, but one simple tip that isn’t so obvious is to always make pure protein your first food of the day. Nuts, eggs (no toast), or a protein drink with no fruit or sugar. Why? Pure protein as your first food stimulates a release of glucagon, which burns fat. Whereas carbs and sugars stimulate a release of insulin, which stores fat. You can also add chromium to your supplement program, to further stimulate fat burning.

THE RIGHT FATS Your body needs fat, so start reprogramming the No Fat mindset. Instead, steer away from margarine and saturated fats, processed foods and excess sugar. Include good fats like avocado, olive oil, wild salmon, free range eggs, nuts and seeds. Omega-3, besides it’s many health benefits, also reduces the output of adrenaline. This again helps manage the effects of stress and leads back to more balanced hormones and less belly fat.

ACCOUNTABILITY Make your wellbeing a priority. You’re the only one in charge of it, and it’s never up to anyone else. Ever. Accountability begins and ends with you. You’re a Woman Of Worth, and WOW Women do not dilute their power with an ongoing onslaught of fast food, chemicals and chaos. Embrace moderation, while honouring the magnificent YOU that you are. “You have to know you’re worth it, before you can just do it.”

Christine Awram is the founder of WOW and is a dynamic speaker, consultant, author, visionary and philanthropist. Diagnosed many years ago with a rare eye disease that was supposed to leave her blind, being a “medical miracle” refined her wellness strategies and led to the creation of WOW. She was honoured with the Outstanding Leadership Award presented by the Global Women’s Summit, and has personally empowered over 10,000 women. Christine also believes chocolate is a vegetable, as it comes from a bean. To learn more about Christine and WOW, visit AWomanofWorth.com
