My heart is heavy as I write this month’s note to you. Like many of you, I’ve watched Hurricane Helene leave its mark on our families, friends, coworkers, clients, and communities. While the devastation is hard to bear, I couldn’t be prouder to call North Carolina home. The outpouring of generosity and strength we’ve seen is nothing short of remarkable.

Though I can't possibly name all the heroes in our community, I want to highlight just a few who have truly touched my heart. First, Josh’s Farmer’s Market, which many of you are already familiar with, has made a commitment to continue collecting and transporting supplies for those in need as long as our community keeps supporting them. Their dedication is inspiring.

Another hero is Greg Biffle, NASCAR driver and athlete, who, along with his wonderful wife and family, has quietly done so much to support relief efforts. There aren’t enough pages in this magazine to fully capture the impact they've made.

Amidst all of this, we’re honored to have the incredible Vanessa McGovern grace our cover this month. I won’t spoil her story—head over to page 28 to read more about her inspiring journey!

The pictures here were taken the weekend before Hurricane Helene, at the beautiful Glamping Wild in Creston, NC. We spent the weekend hiking, making s’mores by the fire, and playing games, while the dogs lived their best lives. If you’re looking for a relaxing getaway, check out their ad on page 83 and book now for spring 2025—we can’t wait to visit again!

Lastly, with the holidays around the corner, don’t miss our Holiday Gift Guide starting on page 46. It’s filled with unique ways to support and shop local this season—let's come together as a community in more ways than one.

With gratitude,

COZY UP TO FALL: HOW TO CHOOSE THE PERFECT FIRE TABLE FOR YOUR OUTDOOR SPACE

As summer fades and cooler evenings approach, there’s nothing better than gathering around a warm fire with family and friends. Fire pits and fireplaces have long been popular outdoor features, but in recent years, gas fire tables have emerged as the ultimate combination of style, convenience, and warmth. No more smoky clothes or ash in the air—just the push of a button, and you’re ready to relax under the stars.

With the growing demand for these functional and stylish pieces, there are more options than ever. But with so many choices, how do you pick the perfect fire table for your space? Whether you’re looking to make a statement in your backyard or simply want a cozy spot to enjoy your pumpkin spice latte, here’s what to consider when choosing your ideal fire table this season.

MATERIAL MATTERS: DURABILITY MEETS STYLE

One of the first decisions to make is the material. You’ll want something that’s not only durable but also fits your aesthetic. Here are a few popular options to consider:

Glass Fiber Reinforced Concrete (GFRC): GFRC combines strength and style. Though hefty, it’s lighter than solid concrete, making it manageable. It comes in earthy shades like gray, black, and brown, with finishes that can mimic stone or wood. Perfect for those who want a natural, rustic look without the weight or maintenance of real stone.

Powder-Coated Aluminum: If you prefer something sleek and modern, aluminum might be your go-to. This lightweight material is easy to move and clean, and it comes in a wide variety of colors and finishes, including wood and concrete looks. Ideal for those who love a minimalist or contemporary vibe.

DURAWOOD: For a more classic option, Durawood is as tough as it sounds. It’s heavy enough to stand up to windy conditions, won’t rust or fade, and is available in an array of colors with a wood-grain finish. Perfect for those who want a lowmaintenance option with timeless appeal.

SIZE, SHAPE, AND STYLE: MAKING A STATEMENT

Fire tables come in a variety of sizes and shapes, from sleek rectangles to cozy circles, and everything in between. Think about how you plan to use your outdoor space and the type of seating you already have.

Size and Shape: For larger gatherings, a rectangular table may provide ample room to set drinks, plates, and dĂŠcor around the

fire element, while a smaller, round option may create a more intimate, cozy atmosphere. Unique designs, like wine barrel or boulder-shaped tables, add personality and can become a conversation starter.

Style: Whether you’re going for modern, rustic, or traditional, there’s a fire table to match. Consider how it will pair with your existing furniture—cohesiveness in design can elevate the entire look of your outdoor area.

Functionality: Think about the practical side too—where will the propane tank go? Some tables have discreet storage for the tank within the base, while others require the tank to be housed in a separate side table. Also, check the height—do you want a table that works with dining chairs or bar stools? These small details can make a big difference in your outdoor experience.

BUDGET: FINDING THE PERFECT BALANCE

A fire table is not just an outdoor accessory—it’s an investment in your home’s outdoor living experience. Like most quality furniture, prices can vary widely based on material, design, and size. At The Garden Room, we offer a range of options to suit every budget.

On the Low End: Our popular Nantucket fire bowl starts at just $599, offering a compact and stylish way to add warmth to your evenings.

Top of the Line: If you’re looking for something a little more luxurious, our large rectangular fire table, with a polished marble top and powder-coated aluminum frame, comes in at $3,499— an elegant centerpiece for any patio.

Whatever your budget, we’re here to help you find a fire table that not only fits your style but also delivers value.

READY TO WARM UP YOUR FALL?

With so many options available, finding the perfect fire table may feel overwhelming, but it doesn’t have to be! Visit us at The Garden Room, and let our team help you discover the fire table that’s just right for you. Whether you’re looking to host autumn gatherings or simply want to relax under the stars with a hot cup of cocoa, we’ve got you covered.

CREAMY ROASTED RED PEPPER AND GOUDA SOUP

A creamy, comforting blend of roasted red peppers and rich gouda cheese offering a smooth, slightly smoky flavor perfect for a cozy meal.

Servings: 6

Prep time: 10 minutes

Cook time: 50 minutes

Total time: 1 hour

Ingredients:

• 4 T avocado oil

• 3 medium red bell peppers, roasted with skin and seeds removed

• 1 small white onion, diced

• 2 large carrots, chopped

• 3 cloves garlic, minced

• 4 cups vegetable broth

• 1 tsp. paprika

• 1 tsp. Italian seasoning

• 1 cup heavy cream

• 1 cup freshly shredded smoked gouda cheese

• Salt and pepper, to taste

Instructions:

1. Set the broiler to 500 degrees F. Cut the red peppers in half and remove the stem and seeds. Place the halved bell peppers face down with the skin side up on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. Roast the peppers for 15 minutes or until the top of the pepper blackens a little bit.

2. Once the peppers are done, remove them from the oven and cover with foil for about 10 minutes. Once they have cooled off, peel the skin off and set aside.

3. While the peppers are broiling, place the avocado oil, onion, carrots, garlic and spices in a large stock pot and cook for about eight minutes or until the carrots are tender.

4. Add the roasted red peppers and vegetable broth, and reduce to medium-low heat to simmer for about five minutes.

5. Using an immersion blender, puree the soup in the stock pot. Add the heavy cream and gouda. Continue to cook over low heat until the gouda has melted and blended into the soup.

6. Serve with garlic bread. Enjoy!

Note: If you don’t have an immersion blender, transfer the soup to a food processor.

SOCIAL MEDIA’S IMPACT ON YOUR MONEY MINDSET

There are a variety of viewpoints on how social media influences our society – both good and bad. After all, some people are spending hours a day on these platforms and we need to be aware of their impact. From our vantage point, we’re paying close attention to how these networks influence our clients’ spending, saving, and investing habits.

Social media often showcases a curated and exaggerated view of reality. People don’t often post about their child’s behavioral problems at school or about the stress of caring for an aging parent. They post about luxury vacations, great seats at sporting events, and fancy nights out. It creates a distorted sense of what is “normal” and can lead to an unconscious pressure to keep up.

Let’s say you follow friends or influencers who travel the globe, stay at the best hotels and dine at Michelin star restaurants. Maybe subconsciously, this alters the way you feel about the “standard” vacation you take to the beach, even though you’ve enjoyed it for years.

Or maybe you’re seeing posts during the holidays of friends spending time in second homes. You might begin to feel that owning a second home is more common and necessary than it really is.

Remind yourself that social media often highlights the best moments of someone’s life, not their everyday reality. Set personal

financial goals that reflect your values and priorities rather than the curated lives you see online.

To be clear, there’s nothing wrong with traveling or buying a second home. In fact, proper financial planning can help you make these choices with confidence and within your means. It’s just important to avoid the sense of never having enough or always needing to upgrade.

It should also be mentioned that social media has the potential to inspire positive financial habits as well. Many financial advisors, asset managers, and publications have taken to the platforms and can offer valuable advice.

It’s all about what posts appear in your newsfeeds. You can influence this by the pages and profiles that you follow. Consider following pages that build your knowledge base, rather than aspirational pages of perfection.

Social media’s influence on our views of money, spending, and investing is undeniable. By being aware of its impact, practicing mindful consumption, and seeking credible information, we can navigate the digital landscape without compromising our financial well-being. Remember, your financial journey is unique, and staying true to your values and goals is the key to long-term success

“Remind yourself that social media often highlights the

best moments of someone’s life, not their everyday reality. Set personal financial goals that reflect your values and priorities rather than the curated lives you see online.”

SPARKLING SMILES FOR THE HOLIDAYS

As the holidays near and we’re dreaming about festive gatherings with friends and family we don’t see often enough, imagine showing off a brilliant new smile for those important selfies and once-a-year keepsake group photos.

Let’s be honest – is it possible that a brighter smile is on your holiday wishlist? Statistics from the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry suggest only 50% of Americans say they are satisfied with their current smile status. If you are less than thrilled about grinning big in photos this season, it’s time to schedule a whitening appointment with Brighter Smiles of Davidson.

Owner Jasmine Egoavil has found her own personal inspiration for building a successful small business – and that philosophy brings as much joy to her as it does to her loyal clients!

“I strive to live my life by my favorite ancient Chinese proverb: ‘Use your smile to change the world, don’t let the world change your smile.’ It makes me so happy to know that our services can help so many people feel more radiant and instantly boost their confidence,” she shares. “A brighter smile can brighten your day and the day of all those around you – it’s contagious!”

What a wonderful thought for the holidays and as we embark on a new year! Some of the best reasons to schedule an appointment with Brighter Smiles include affordability and effectiveness, products that are FDA-approved and made in the USA, and knowing the process is safe for even the most sensitive teeth.

Jasmine is excited to introduce the brand new Beyond Ultra Machine that not only cuts down on sensitivity issues, but also lessens a client’s time spent in the chair. That’s the perfect option for your busy entertaining and shopping schedule.

“Our new Beyond Ultra machine is the safest, most effective method to whiten your teeth,” explains Jasmine. “It not only eases sensitivity, but also cuts down on whitening time by about half! The Beyond ll Ultra Whitening Accelerator features a unique combination of high-intensity LED lights coupled with patented ultrasound technology. For only $225, you can expect to see a difference of up to 16 shades whiter in just one session!”

It’s also a game changer for the large number of clients Jasmine meets who have never had their teeth whitened and are wary of what will happen because of their sensitivity. Jasmine is diligent about taking the time to explain all aspects of the process, what realistic results clients can expect and any necessary aftercare instructions. To further soften the experience, she has curated her studio to evoke a calm, restorative ambiance where you can relax and listen to your favorite music or TV show, while beginning to envision a more confident smile to share with the world! (Fact: Many clients simply enjoy a nap during their whitening!)

Look for Brighter Smiles of Davidson to offer some fun giveaways for the holidays, plus specials coming up in both November and December. Stay tuned to their social media for events and updates – Facebook and Instagram @brightsmiles_davidson – or call 561.886.8081 to hear about upcoming sales or to purchase a gift card for someone special on your holiday list.

Now that you’re ready to book an appointment with Jasmine, visit brightersmiles-whitening.com. The studio is conveniently located at 21000 Torrence Chapel Road, Suite 104 in Cornelius, NC. Appointments are available Monday through Friday 9:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. and Saturday 9:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m.

SHOPPING LOCAL meets THE RED CARPET

WHILE A TYPICAL DAY FOR VANESSA MCGOVERN INVOLVES THE CHANCE TO EMPOWER SMALL TRAVEL ADVISOR BUSINESSES ACROSS THE COUNTRY – WHILE MEETING SOME WONDERFUL PEOPLE – SOMETIMES THE STARS ALIGN FOR AN UNEXPECTED DOSE OF GLAMOUR!

As Chief Sales & Marketing Officer for Gifted Travel Network, Vanessa co-founded the company in 2013 to support travel entrepreneurship and the local professionals who are making it happen. “GTN is not the direct seller of travel, and we are not consumerfacing,” she explains. “As a host agency, our role is to support approximately 400 travel advisors who are small business owners around the country, through a focus on business education, various programs and industry affiliations. Our travel advisors are among the most respected in luxury travel.”

Just as her professional career has been built on supporting small local businesses, Vanessa was thrilled to reach out to some of her favorite Mooresville small business owners when she was honored with the opportunity to attend the 76th Emmy Awards this past September.

While Vanessa certainly never thought she’d be walking the Emmy Awards Red Carpet, it was a once-in-a-lifetime experience that offered her team the chance to connect with some amazing Mooresville entrepreneurs and spread our very special brand of Lake Norman community vibes all the way to Los Angeles!

“It’s proof that big or small, you can always dream big!” she says.

Vanessa attended the Emmys as a guest of The Ritz-Carlton – the official hotel partner of the 76th Emmy Awards and one of her own close business partners. Her whirlwind three-day visit to Los Angeles included a behind-the-scenes tour where she watched some of the evening’s talent rehearsing, her own Red Carpet “moment” and the chance to attend the Governors Ball, the Emmys’

well-known after-party. (And, while Vanessa met many celebrities that weekend, she especially loved meeting Connie Britton – whom she described as exceptionally lovely and down-to-Earth!)

Continued on page 30.

A natural extension of her personal quest to support independent businesses, Vanessa was thrilled to showcase a few of her favorite Mooresville spots that were instrumental in helping her achieve her stunning Emmys look!

If you’re a fan of Juelerye in Mooresville (Vanessa is a frequent customer of the boutique known for artisan jewelry, art and memorable gifts), you already know that Owner Jacqueline Bassett is something of a master organizer – and Vanessa credits Jacque with basically acting as her “agent” during preparations for this event. Once Vanessa had selected her dream dress for the night, Jacque offered her artistic expertise by suggesting exquisite Melinda Lawton earrings – a brilliant mix of Ethiopian opals, emeralds and diamonds – as the perfect jewelry accent. She also knew an iconic clutch from the Kent Stetson collection would finish the elegant look in style. (You can purchase your own finishing touches from both Melinda Lawton and Kent Stetson at juelerye.com.)

Now for that breathtaking gown that Vanessa wore so splendidly! A shopping appointment with Dina Haugstatter at The Perfect Dress in Mooresville was a given, and Dina shares that this beauty by Ivonne D, a montage collection, was the first style she selected for Vanessa to try on. “None compared to this one!” says Dina, describing the black sleeveless, strapless crepe mermaid-style gown with classic sweetheart neckline, 3D organza layered skirt and detachable 3D organza cape.

Vanessa relied on the expert services of John Emily Studio in Charlotte for precise alterations and an amazing fit.

“It really means everything to me to be able to support these local businesses and share the beauty of what they do, right here in our Lake Norman community!” adds Vanessa. “We’re promoting the beauty of shopping local, with women-owned and women-led businesses.”

As a guest of The Ritz-Carlton company, Vanessa was one of only three clients invited to walk the Red Carpet and garner their own up-close Emmy experience. The evening awards ceremony was held at the glorious Peacock Theater in downtown Los Angeles, right across the street from The Ritz-Carlton.

When she’s not educating and guiding travel advisors across the country, Vanessa is happy at home in Mooresville, with her husband, Don, son, Ethan, 13, and daughter, Ella, 10, who was especially delighted to discover her mom was going to be our “cover girl” for November!

Experience the joys of Juelerye for yourself by visiting the boutique at 112 South Main Street in Mooresville. Shop both Melinda Lawton jewelry and the Kent Stetson collection on their website at juelerye.com, and stay updated on the latest designs and events by following them on social media @juelerye. For more details or inquiries, call 704.728.9880. The Perfect Dress is your local go-to boutique for proms and homecomings, mothers’ gowns, special occasions and quinceañeras, and is located at 500 S. Main Street, Suite #116, in Mooresville, 704.978.9928, or online at theperfectdressnc.com. PEONY AND GOLD

ALL FOR THE LOVE OF FLOWERS

From the most delightful fresh florals ready and waiting in the shop each day to once-ina-lifetime celebrations that mirror the softness of romance, Laura Stephens has created a truly magical mix at her first stateside, full-service floral shop.

Located in Cornelius, NC, Peony and Gold has captured the attention of discerning clients since opening in early September, offering luxury arrangements and breathtaking event dĂŠcor along with simple wrapped flowers perfect to treat yourself at the end of a long day!

Laura has fully realized her personal dream to bring the wondrous feeling of walking into a designer floral boutique in London or Paris to the Lake Norman community. While she and her family moved here in 2022 for her husband’s job – initially for only six years – they realized, after only two years, that North Carolina was destined to be their permanent home.

She had initially started Peony and Gold in 2017 in Northumberland, England, UK, and it quickly became an awardwinning bespoke wedding florist there, bestowing beautiful florals on more happy couples than she can count!

“I have always loved flowers, and I always had them around the house,” Laura shares. “I am very creative and was a graphic designer before I started Peony and Gold – so this seemed like a perfect way to turn a hobby into a career.”

With a love for luxurious, romantic, natural designs, Laura describes her décor style as “English country garden crossed with Bridgerton!”

A self-defined lover of “all things pretty,” Laura tends to favor muted tones with lots of texture, which she says she doesn’t see as much here in the United States.

Continued from page 42.

“I typically create floral designs in softer, muted colors and I love classic white,” she adds. “I think delicate blooms and soft textures bring a sense of romance to a design that you just can’t achieve with brighter colors.”

In addition to same-day delivery of distinctive arrangements available to Cornelius, Davidson, Huntersville and Mooresville, the shop also offers grab-and-go gifts simply to brighten someone’s day. Laura feels blessed with two amazing employees – Jessica and Sheniz – who seem tailor-made for her creative mission.

“Jessica is from Lake Norman and is such a fun personality, just a lovely person to be around. She keeps me organized with little notes so I don’t forget things. Sheniz is also British, so she understands my British references and knows exactly what I mean when I go off on a tangent!”

Meeting with brides-to-be is a large part of Peony and Gold’s business, and Laura feels most prospective clients come to her because of her English garden-inspired style.

“Many brides don’t know a great deal about flowers, and they trust me to create something beautiful,” Laura shares. “A color scheme is my most important reference but that doesn’t mean we have to stick with only one or two colors. Sometimes bringing in subtle changes in tone can make an arrangement really pop.”

Laura is thrilled to be embarking on her first holiday season with the new business in Cornelius, with plenty of creative notions already in mind for Thanksgiving centerpieces in November, and Christmas floral gifts, centerpieces and festive wreaths for clients’ homes in the month of December.

She also shares two outstanding recognitions the business has received – being selected for Style Me Pretty’s Little Black Book list of vetted and approved vendors, and an appearance on Junebug Weddings’ list of the top wedding suppliers in the world. “We are delighted to be one of only a few wedding florists listed in the U.S. and the only one in North Carolina,” Laura adds.

Peony and Gold offers nothing less than an impeccable high-end experience when it comes to setting the mood for any occasion, as well as personalized subscription services for your home or office, easily selected on the website. Treat yourself to the unmistakable luxury you deserve – as a blushing bride or as a lover of fresh flowers gracing your everyday surroundings.

ART SPEAK: UNVEILING LAKE NORMAN’S CREATIVE VOICES

This month’s featured artist is Hilary Siber Edwards.

How would you describe your work?

I would describe my work as colorful, textured, spatial and nuanced.

Which other artists most inspired you?

Julie Mehretu, Vija Celamins, Gerhard Richter and Ann Gale are the artists who come to mind.

Where do you find your best sources for inspiration? Literature, conversations, Sunday morning sermons… a poetic line from a piece of music. Inspiration is everywhere! I’ve made paintings that are inspired by things as disparate as a broken piece of glass or a critical essay on prison reform!

What is the greatest compliment you’ve received about your work?

The greatest compliment is when someone wants to have a conversation with me about the piece I’ve created – to know the “why” behind the “what.”

What are you working on now that you are excited about?

I am currently working on a large three-sided mural in Uptown across from Bank of America Stadium. It is exciting to be working so publicly and so large!

What is one piece of creative advice you wish you had learned sooner?

“Don’t worry so much,” and a sweet friend once encouraged me that “there is room enough for all of us” (speaking about the art world).

CONNECTING FAMILIES THROUGH THE GREAT OUTDOORS LAKE RIDGE OUTDOORS

A haven for every outdoor enthusiast, Lake Ridge Outdoors in Denver, NC, has a new look and an ever-growing excitement for connections and camaraderie – all via the great outdoors!

Owner and Operator Travis DePree shares his passion for small business with his wife and co-owner, Lindsay, and both feel there’s just something about the tight knit, small town feeling in Denver. Raising their two boys here seemed the natural thing to do – and they invite you to bring your entire family out to shop for all your lake essentials together, while you start building lifetime memories!

“We've created a space where the whole family can feel welcome with samples from the grill, refreshments for adults and sweet treats for the kids,” says Travis. “We encourage you to stay and hang out.”

After playing professional basketball overseas, Travis moved to North Carolina and spent most of his career in corporate and logistics roles at both Target and Amazon. Yet, he always dreamed of creating something of his own that would connect his family more personally with the local community.

“When our favorite local store – Denver Outdoors Co. – was closing, we felt it a perfect sign to take that leap, quite literally, when we spotted a ‘business for sale’ sign on the side of the road,” says Travis. “The original owner, Ed Young, had built something

truly special in our community. When he retired, we saw rebranding as a natural step to mark the next chapter of the store, while preserving everything we loved about Denver Outdoors.”

In fact, Travis says they love the area so much, it prompted them to bring high-quality products right to the community, so finding what you want and need is never far from home! That’s especially true for items customers prefer to feel or experience for themselves – as opposed to ordering online.

“We focus on offering premium brands that support the lakeside lifestyle which you won't typically find elsewhere in Denver,” Travis explains.

That lake lifestyle is likely to include grilling and boating in the summer, tailgating and time around the fire pit during the cooler months, plus plenty of year round pursuits such as pickleball and golf. Lake Ridge Outdoors has equipment and apparel no matter what your favorite pastime, with the added benefit of building personal connections while shopping and gathering with friends at the store.

“Many Saturdays, we fire up the smoker for samples or set up the pickleball court in the parking lot for happy hour,” shares Travis. “On Friday afternoons, you might find folks just hanging out, unwinding after the week. This is the best part for me –chatting with people about their grilling plans or helping them discover something new in the store they'll love. That's what makes this my dream job!”

The front of Lake Ridge Outdoors showcases Traeger Grills, Breeo smokeless fire pits and a variety of accessories, seasonings and sauces. They also offer premium lifestyle apparel, gear, drinkware and the ability to do custom engraving on various products such as tumblers, cutting boards, coasters, glass and even wine and spirits bottles. Plus, look for gift baskets and other fun gift items for the holidays!

A recently added brand that customers are excited about –Turtlebox – features rugged, waterproof speakers perfect for tailgates or an afternoon on the water. You’ll find Johnnie-O, a men's golf and lifestyle brand known for its stylish, highperformance fabrics, Free Fly apparel for men, women and kids, and the just-launched Rhone's women's line which includes golf, tennis, pickleball gear and cozy loungewear sets.

Whether you’re a true master of watersports, a novice grill master

looking to learn or simply ready to entertain on the patio and soak up cherished outdoor time with your family – Lake Ridge Outdoors has the right gear and every accessory you need!

Lake Ridge Outdoors is located at 1251 NC-16 Business in Denver, NC, 704.966.0320. Follow them on Instagram @ lakeridgeoutdoorsnc or email shop@lakeridgeoutdoors.com with any questions about their inventory. TRACKSIDE TALKS:

OFF AXIS PAINT – COVER THE FIELD

When my husband and I found out we were moving to Mooresville three years ago for him to pursue a career within the motorsports community, a lucky connection was made with Greg Stumpff, owner of Off Axis Paint (OAP) and fellow Missouri Ozarks native. Anyone who knows Stumpff will tell you he’s the nicest guy in the world. He became an instant friend and supporter of my husband upon meeting which has been a huge blessing.

Off Axis Paint is an airbrush company that specializes in race helmets. Arguably the most important part of the racing uniform is the helmet which drivers are required to wear to ensure their safety. The helmet is also the only part of the uniform that can be customized to reflect drivers’ personalities. OAP takes pride in its ability to not only create unique pieces of art for drivers to wear on the tracks, but also in its training to ensure no helmet goes out the door without having properly met safety regulations. Stumpff takes this very seriously as most of his clients quickly become friends, and you never want to send a friend out on the track with safety in question.

I was more than excited when Stumpff took time out of his busy schedule to answer a few questions about his journey to creating and maintaining a successful business right here in Race City, USA.

When did your love for motorsports begin?

Some of my earliest memories were at a local short track, but it was always dirt racing back when I lived in Missouri. I never really paid attention to what was going on in the NASCAR world since it seemed so far out of reach. Once I was old enough, I jumped in a truck with a friend, Will Vaught, who was racing a dirt late model at the time, and we began years worth of traveling the country to just about every dirt track from Florida to Arizona. This is when I knew I wanted a full time career in the motorsports industry.

How did you get your start in professional painting?

My story began as a hobby in the back of an art room at a small school in Reeds Spring, MO. I had a great art teacher, Matt Locke,

that showed me how an airbrush worked and introduced me to the business side of visual arts. By my junior year in high school, we were bidding jobs at other schools in the district and spending weeks at a time decking the halls with murals and custom art. Then, as a bonus at the end of it all, we got paid. So, I guess this is really where I became a “professional” artist. We were just having fun, doing what we loved and it never felt like an actual job.

After your move from Missouri to NC in 2012, how did Off Axis get its start?

After a few years of being on the road with the dirt team, I was still painting a few helmets on the side for drivers while living in Missouri. I continued to network with more people in the NASCAR realm while adding names like Kenny Wallace, Ken Schrader and Mark Martin to my resume. The more helmets I began to acquire, it kind of just snowballed out of control and the thought of picking up and moving to NC seemed like a realistic idea if I wanted to try to paint for a living. In October of 2012, I found a small storage unit to work out of, loaded up a U-Haul trailer and made the jump to give this career a go. I told myself that if I failed and had to move home in six months, at least I tried and that was better than always wondering “what if” when I got older. So far, it’s working out. I have a team of incredible artists working by my side. Noel NcEwen, Michael Sauers and Ryan Timm possess the same passion for quality, and without this welloiled machine, Off Axis wouldn’t be where it is today. We’re all incredibly blessed to have a career doing what we love.

Continued on page 42.

What project are you most proud of?

Everyone usually asks what my favorite helmet has been over the years, but it’s such a hard question since each one takes about 30-40 hours to produce. Each one of us in the shop really tries to make the next one better than the last. I would say I’m really most proud of the helmets that have a story behind them. Whether it’s a helmet to commemorate a 500th start or a retirement gift for a long-time sponsor, I love to see the look of surprise or joy when they open the box. Every year, we paint a playoff helmet for Justin Allgaier. His daughter, Harper, comes in and helps us with every step from designing to the finishing details. It all comes from her ideas, and he has no idea what it looks like. We started when she was three years old, and she’s now 11, so it’s become such a cool tradition in the shop. It’s a great project everyone looks forward to, and I know having that timeline of helmets for Justin is special for him to look back on one day after he’s done racing.

What detail do you believe makes a good helmet a great helmet?

I really believe having our shop in Mooresville or around your customers is key. The helmet is the last piece of the car the driver can add some personal creativity to, so when they can stop in and talk face to face, it really helps us bring what’s in their head to reality. I’m sure some artists are different, but I couldn’t imagine trying to do what we do strictly over phone calls or email.

Who has been your biggest mentor in the industry?

I’ve had a few over the years in different areas of my life as I’ve grown into a business owner, but I’d say the biggest would be Sam Bass. He was NASCAR’s first officially licensed artist and really paved the way for commercial artists in racing. He taught me more of the business side of things than anything. A lot of artists use one side of the brain very well, but to be well rounded and be able to use both to run a business can be very challenging. He taught me to not give up, and he set an amazing example of how to treat people. Since he passed in 2019, I can’t tell you how many stories I’ve heard of people walking into his gallery and him stopping whatever he was doing to show them around or just have a long conversation with them. I really try to keep that same atmosphere alive in our shop today.

Besides being able to paint and produce incredible helmets for world class athletes, what’s the most unique work of art to come from Off Axis Paint?

You literally never know what’s going to come through the door here! We’ve painted shoes for Snoop Dogg, helmets for NFL players and guitars for tons of music artists. We stay booked up with helmets year round, so we can’t take on as many side projects as we used to; but it’s always nice to take a break and paint something different for a week especially after a long offseason getting ready for Daytona.

Follow @offaxispaint on Instagram to view artfully crafted helmets you can expect to see showcased by some of your favorite NASCAR drivers!

FORGIVENESS:

The Choice That Sets You Free

It’s practically impossible for any of us to go through life without sometimes stepping on someone else’s toes. That means, of course, that sometimes it’s our own toes that get stomped on. Every time we are offended by another person, we have to decide whether we will forgive that person or whether we will harbor resentment. A simple choice, right? Sometimes yes, but it’s rarely quite as simple as it sounds. There’s a lot of confusion about forgiveness. And, that confusion often gets in the way of our forgiving someone. To understand what forgiveness really means, it helps to first be clear about what forgiveness doesn’t mean.

Forgiving someone does not mean:

• that what was done to you is okay.

• that the person is not accountable for what they did.

• that your pain doesn’t matter or that you should “just get over it.”

So, what does forgiveness mean? Simply put, forgiveness is the decision to no longer hold someone’s offense against them. It’s the choice to cancel the debt it feels like that other person owes you. But, when we’ve been deliberately insulted, violated or betrayed, and the wound is deep and painful, it can be very, very difficult to forgive. In fact, the more hurtful the offense, the harder it can be to forgive. So, how do we do it – and why should we?

That’s exactly what this book is about!

I learned so much in the process of researching and writing this book. One of my biggest personal “aha” moments was learning that there are two kinds of forgiveness – unilateral and transactional.

Unilateral forgiveness is one-sided forgiveness. It takes place entirely within the mind and heart of the offended person. The person who caused the hurt is not even involved. Because unilateral forgiveness requires nothing from the person who caused the offense, it doesn’t matter if that other person has asked for your forgiveness or not. It doesn’t matter if they have no remorse for what they did. It doesn’t matter if they’re not speaking to you. It doesn’t even matter if the person has died. You can still forgive them – because the purpose of unilateral forgiveness is to set yourself free! Forgiveness is for us, for our peace of mind and heart, for our happiness and for our spiritual and emotional freedom from the toxic effects of resentment and unforgiveness. Forgiving others brings about the inner freedom that God desires for us. This is where the title of the book comes from: Forgiveness: The Choice That Sets You Free

The other kind of forgiveness is called transactional forgiveness. This kind of forgiveness is interpersonal, between two people. It involves a conversation between the person who was hurt and the person who hurt them. Transactional forgiveness can only occur if both people are willing. Usually it means one person is asking for forgiveness, and the other person is giving it. But often, it’s both people forgiving each other. Transactional forgiveness has the potential to restore broken relationships.

This forgiveness that leads to reconciliation is not “forgive and forget.” “Forgive and forget” is actually a myth – because we don’t have the ability to just decide to no longer remember something. Painful memories may dim over time, but it’s not likely that you’ll completely forget a deeply painful wrong that was done to you. Because of this, you may never get to the point where you feel like forgiving. The truth is, real forgiveness, like real love, is a choice. Forgiveness is ultimately a decision of the will, not the emotions.

If you struggle with forgiveness, I invite you to read this book. If you do, I hope it helps you make the choice that sets you free.

Dear Dr. Keith,

I am a 62-year-old married man who recently celebrated our 42nd wedding anniversary alone. My wife was present physically, however, mentally, she wasn’t capable of being present since her Alzheimer’s diagnosis a couple of years ago. I was her caregiver up until a few months ago when she started becoming agitated and violent, no longer the person I married, a shell of her former self. That’s when I, with the approval of our children, moved her into a residence that specializes in Alzheimer’s care. I gave it my best effort to take care of her at home as long as I could without sacrificing my own sanity; I felt like I was going crazy. I love my wife and want to honor my marriage vows, to take care of her in sickness and in health. I feel like I’ve abandoned her, with the guilt and shame overwhelming me at times. This led me to finding help in the form of an Alzheimer’s support group. What had started out as a positive step in my understanding and acceptance of the situation, and comfort in knowing I wasn’t alone, has now led to some confusion and more guilt. I’ve befriended a woman in the group who I’m quite attracted to and have a lot in common with. We’ve met for coffee a few times, and the conversations have been amazing. The more I see her, the more I want to see her. She’s told me she feels the same and would like to take our friendship to another level. Her husband recently passed, and she knows my wife is still alive, and I visit her frequently. She’s fine with it and has offered to go with me for support knowing that my wife has know idea who I am, and her health is failing. According to her doctors, she doesn’t have much time left. This is where I struggle and feel guilty. Am I cheating on my wife and dishonoring my marriage? Is it wrong to move on and create a life of fulfillment moving forward. I’m lonely and confused.

Jeremy R., Cornelius, NC

ASK DR. KEITH

Hey Jeremy,

I’m sorry you’re struggling, however, yours is a challenging, yet not uncommon situation as Alzheimer’s has become more prevalent in recent years. It is unique to other illnesses because those of us who have lost loved ones to this horrible disease go through the grieving process twice, the mental and then the physical demise. When you said your vows, you didn’t expect your wife to become ill, and she certainly didn’t expect it. Illness is one of the unknowns of life, and nobody’s immune to it. The one certainty in life is uncertainty. Life is not linear, and it’s certainly not fair; and it’s our ability to adapt, or not, that will determine our future and the quality of our lives. You still have a lot of life to live; don’t let guilt, regret or shame tarnish it. The only time we should feel those is if we do something with intent to harm, hurt or deceive someone which you haven’t done. I applaud your decision to get help and engage with a support group. You might want to consider working with a therapist to help with your grief and the inevitable loss of your wife. I don’t know your background, faith or family dynamics which all can affect your feelings and decisions. You’ve been a good husband and are honoring your commitment to take care of your wife. Unfortunately, this horrible disease is shortening her life, not yours. As far as moving forward, what are you going to be comfortable with and what is going to bring you joy? People are going to talk and have their opinions. Don’t allow the opinions, judgments and expectations of others keep you from finding that joy. I know you’re not getting any younger, however, don’t be in a hurry. Relationships are a lot like trees, they both need strong roots to grow and need time and nourishment to flourish. However, give yourself the time to grieve and move beyond the loss that’s coming before you make any life-altering decisions. As far as your new friendship goes, I recommend being patient. I’ve seen too many people make quick and poor decisions due to loneliness and the fear of being alone. Both can easily blur clarity, reasonability and lead to poor decisions, a direct road to regret. It’s not the mistakes in life that are hard to live with, it’s the regrets, so don’t be in a hurry, take your time. If your new friend is worth her salt, she’ll be patient, understanding and there for you when the dust settles. The potential for a life and relationship free from regret…

THANKSGIVING IN NORTH CAROLINA

As North Carolina prepares to celebrate Thanksgiving this year, the atmosphere is imbued with a complex mix of gratitude and somber reflection. In the wake of Hurricane Helene’s devastation in Western North Carolina, communities are coming together not only to share their stories of loss, but to count their blessings and support one another in the aftermath of the storm, as well.

THE IMPACT OF HURRICANE HELENE

Hurricane Helene, which struck Western North Carolina with fierce winds and torrential rain, left many families grappling with loss. Homes were lost or damaged, lives were lost or disrupted, and the emotional toll on residents is palpable still today. As people sift through the remnants of their lives, the challenges they face are significant – yet, so is their resilience.

COMMUNITY STRENGTH AND SUPPORT

In the face of such adversity, the spirit of community shines brightly. Neighbors are banding together to provide aid, share resources and offer support to those in need. Local organizations have mobilized, providing food, shelter and financial assistance to families affected by the hurricane. Many volunteers have stepped forward locally, around the state and entire country, embodying the essence of thankfulness by giving their time and energy to help others.

This Thanksgiving, many North Carolinians are choosing to reflect on not just what they have, but the strength and solidarity that has emerged in their communities, as well. It’s a poignant reminder that, even in the darkest times, hope and support can flourish.

THE POWER OF GRATITUDE

Gratitude can be a powerful tool for healing. For those affected by the hurricane, acknowledging what they still have – family, friends and a community that cares – can provide comfort amid loss. This Thanksgiving, many are sharing their stories of resilience, finding solace in the small moments of joy and connection.

Families are gathering around tables filled with food, sharing meals that symbolize sustenance and togetherness. For some, this holiday may be less about the traditional feast and more about simply being present with loved ones. Gratitude practices, such as sharing what they are thankful for, have become a poignant part of many families’ gatherings, fostering a sense of hope and renewal.

MOVING FORWARD

As North Carolina reflects on the lessons learned from Hurricane Helene, there is a collective understanding that recovery will take time. The rebuilding process is just beginning, and the path ahead may be challenging. However, the spirit of Thanksgiving serves as a beacon of hope.

This year, as families gather to give thanks, they carry their own stories of loss and survival as well as the stories of their neighbors. In the act of giving thanks, they are also giving back, reinforcing the bonds that make their communities stronger going forward.

Even though this year’s Thanksgiving in North Carolina is marked by a deep sense of loss and tragedy, a sense of gratitude, resilience and hope continues to shine brightly among the hard hit communities. Amidst the trials brought by Hurricane Helene, the people of Western North Carolina are finding strength in each other and recognizing the importance of community. As they gather to share meals and memories, they remind us all that gratitude can illuminate even the darkest of times, paving the way for healing and renewal.

ONE MAN’S PERSPECTIVE -

MAKING IT WORK: HOLIDAY TRADITIONS FOR FAMILIES ON THE MOVE

The holiday season is a time for joy, reflection, and togetherness. For many, it’s the most wonderful time of the year—until the logistics of visiting multiple families enter the equation. Between Thanksgiving and New Year's, families who have to split time among several households often face a juggling act that can feel overwhelming. Yet, despite the challenges, many families have found creative ways to make it work, ensuring that the spirit of the season remains intact.

A SEASON OF FLEXIBILITY

For Jessica and her husband, Tim, holidays mean visiting both sides of their family, spread out across the state. Jessica shares, “We realized early on that we couldn’t be everywhere on the same day, so we had to get creative. One year, we’ll do Thanksgiving with my parents and Christmas with his. The next year, we flip it.”

This alternating system helps avoid the pressure of squeezing in multiple holiday visits in a single day. Instead, each holiday is spent fully immersed with one family, allowing them to relax and enjoy quality time without feeling rushed. For families navigating multiple commitments, flexibility is key.

CREATING NEW TRADITIONS

Some families embrace the opportunity to create their own holiday traditions that fit their unique situation. For Keisha, who has three sets of grandparents to visit with her kids, she realized they needed to stop trying to replicate everyone else’s traditions. “We started celebrating ‘Thanksmas’—a blend of Thanksgiving and Christmas—on the first weekend in December. It’s become a day where we gather with one set of family, and everyone knows it’s ‘our’ holiday. No one feels slighted because we’re creating something special that’s just for us.”

Blended or non-traditional families may also have to coordinate schedules for kids with different households. Mary, who shares custody of her daughter, learned early on that trying to split Thanksgiving Day between homes was too stressful. “We do Thanksgiving on Friday, and it’s actually worked out so well. We avoid the rush and the pressure. It’s still special, and we have a whole day together.”

COMMUNICATING EXPECTATIONS

Holiday visits can sometimes come with emotional baggage, particularly if extended family members have expectations about how things "should" be done. Open communication is critical to making holiday logistics work.

“Being upfront is the best way to handle it,” says Sarah, who travels between her parents and in-laws every year. “We’ve learned to set expectations early. We let both families know well in advance what the plan is, so there’s less room for disappointment or last-minute stress.”

She also advises setting boundaries to prevent overcommitting. “There was a year we tried to do Thanksgiving lunch at my mom’s, then drive an hour for Thanksgiving dinner at my in-laws. By the time dessert rolled around, the kids were exhausted, and we were stressed. We realized it wasn’t worth trying to be everywhere. Now we don’t rush, and we limit the number of places we go.”

SMALL MOMENTS, BIG MEMORIES

For some, the holidays aren’t about the specific day you celebrate, but the time you spend together. “What matters most is the memories we create, not the date on the calendar,” says Greg, a dad who travels with his family every holiday season. “We’ve had Christmas morning in a hotel room before, and it ended up being one of our kids’ favorite memories. We made it fun, packed some small gifts, and had hot cocoa in bed. That’s what the holidays are really about—finding joy in the small moments.”

The holiday season, with all its complexities, is a time when many families have to balance love, time, and logistics. Whether it's through alternate schedules, creative new traditions, or open communication, there are countless ways to make the season work for families with multiple places to be.

In the end, it’s not about where you are or who gets visited first, but about creating a space for love, gratitude, and togetherness—even if it means celebrating a little differently. For families on the move, the holiday spirit can be found wherever they gather, no matter how many households are on the list.
