DECEMBER 2025

SWEET GRASS BOUTIQUE

A PERFECT HOLIDAY EXPERIENCE

Since 2002, we’ve been passionate about lawn care, striving every day to earn the title The Best Service Company Ever! Our dedication goes beyond treatments—we prioritize your experience. We close your gate after service, remove toys before applying treatments, and take the time to ring your doorbell to discuss your lawn’s needs.

Publisher Perspective WHAT A YEAR!

As we close out 2025, all I can say is… what a year! It’s been full of growth, new partnerships, and countless reminders of how much I love this community. As we head into 2026, I’m excited to see what’s ahead and to keep building on the momentum we’ve created together.

We couldn’t be more thrilled about our new partnership with the Lake Norman Home Builders Association! LKN Magazine is proud to be the media sponsor for the 2025 Best of the Lake Awards. The talent, craftsmanship, and community spirit represented through these awards are truly remarkable, spanning not only builders and designers, but also local businesses, service providers, and partners who make Lake Norman such an incredible place to live and work. We can’t wait to help shine a light on all of them in our January 2026 issue.

I had to share this family photo we took recently! Life is crazy and schedules are even crazier, but we managed an impromptu brunch at one of our favorite spots in Winston-Salem—a good halfway point between us and my son and his girlfriend in Raleigh. Time with family (and of course those sweet grand pups!) is always the best reminder of what matters most.

I’m especially proud of this December issue. Our cover feature, SWEET GRASS BOUTIQUE, has been with us since our very beginning in 2022, and we’re so grateful for their continued partnership and friendship. You can read their story starting on page 28.

You’ll also find a powerful piece highlighting several local restaurants that quietly and consistently help feed the homeless through WATCHMEN OF THE STREETS. These

businesses do so much good behind the scenes—please take a moment to support them, and if you’re a restaurant owner, consider joining their mission. Learn more starting on page 18.

Then flip to page 40 to see how our friends at AQUAVENTURE BOAT CLUB make lake life easy and fun, offering access to a fleet of beautiful boats without the hassle of ownership.

HOW TO KNOW THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN A HEALTHY AND UNHEALTHY FRIENDSHIP

When I was younger, I was grateful for my friends in school, and I always thought that we would be best friends forever. However, as we grow up and life changes, some of our friendships change. At 24 years old, I have been blessed with new friendships in my life, and I have lost a few. Losing a friendship is never easy, but it is important only to surround yourself with genuine friends. I have come to realize the true difference between a healthy and unhealthy friendship as I have experienced both types. Below, I am going to explain what I believe are qualities of both healthy and unhealthy friendships.

HEALTHY FRIENDSHIPS

• Your Friend Supports You: Being in a healthy friendship means that your friend supports you and is proud of you. Your friend is excited for you when good things happen in your life and sad for you when difficult things happen in your life. Having a friend who is supportive means having a friend who is constantly there for you and wants the best for you in your life.

• Your Friend is Trustworthy: It is important to have a friend who is trustworthy which means that your friend is someone that you can trust when talking to, especially if that includes talking about difficult things. You know that your friend is not going to tell other people and will keep what you share with them only to themselves. Also, having a trustworthy friend means that your friend follows through on what they say such as actually meeting you for dinner when you schedule a dinner together.

• Moments of Joy & Laughter Are Common: I believe that a sign of a healthy friendship is a friendship that includes plenty of joy and laughter. Being around my best friend is always joyful because we are always laughing which always makes me feel happy. Having moments in friendships where you can just simply laugh and enjoy being around each other is such a joy.

UNHEALTHY FRIENDSHIPS

• Your Friend is Always Competing With You: Having a friend who is always competing with you and is trying to be one step or season ahead of you in life is not healthy. Instead of feeling supported by your friend, you will feel like your friend is trying to constantly be better than you and have things that you do not have such as getting married before you or getting another degree before you, etc. This friendship is not a supportive one, and it is not healthy to surround yourself with someone who does not want the best for you.

• Your Friend is Not Trustworthy: Another sign of an unhealthy friendship is that your friend is not able to be trusted. This could mean that your friend shares your secrets with other people, does not follow through on plans, etc. It is hard to be friends with someone who you are not able to trust. You will never be able to grow in your friendship and have someone to talk to.

• Moments of Joy & Laughter Are Rare: As I mentioned earlier, I feel that having joy and laughter are important in a friendship, and if you do not feel joy or cannot laugh with a friend, then that is a sign of an unhealthy friendship. Maybe you cannot laugh because your friend is always complaining, always trying to be better than you or is simply not nice to you. Having a best friend means having someone who you can genuinely enjoy being around.

I hope that this article will help people see some different qualities of both healthy and unhealthy friendships. When we surround ourselves with genuine friends, we feel better and experience more joy versus being in an unhealthy friendship. It is sad to me that sometimes our friendships change and go in different directions, and we can still talk to friends who we are maybe not as close to anymore; but it is important to spend time with friends who are there for you no matter what.

NURTURING OUR NEIGHBORS IN NEED LOCAL RESTAURANTS SERVING HOPE & LOVE

“Through food, we want to share love, kindness and hope. And for as long as God allows us to do this, we will continue our mission.” ~ Faith Amigo-Choplin

In an ongoing mission of care for those less fortunate, many amazing restaurants in the Lake Norman area are donating not just their time, but nourishing meals from their respective restaurants, as well.

As a member of Bethel Presbyterian Church in Cornelius, Nelson Bass knew of Heath Burchett’s work with Watchmen of the Streets – a Christian nonprofit – and began providing meals for this ministry from his popular Mooresville restaurant, BLU STAR GRILL. “We were incredibly grateful when we nudged some of our many friends in the restaurant business to join us, and their answer was ‘YES!’” shares Nelson. “I knew we could donate more meals as a group than I could by myself. We now have several unique establishments providing high quality restaurant meals for our homeless neighbors who are cared for by WOTS.” Deliveries are made to Watchmen of the Streets on the first and third Tuesdays of each month, so participating restaurants deliver to Blu Star Grill on those designated days. Volunteers then transport everything to the parking lot of Choplin’s Restaurant in Cornelius, where WOTS picks up and packs food to deliver to neighbors in need in Charlotte. For participating restaurants – the benefits are priceless!

Continued on page 20.

Continued from page 18.

Wes Choplin, owner of CHOPLIN’S in Cornelius, also met Heath Burchett more than a decade ago and made an instant connection. Choplin’s started weekly work with Watchmen of the Streets in 2012 – and, during the pandemic, fed more than 1,000 children each week. “Last year, other restaurants in the area joined forces with us, and we’re able to do it with a much greater reach,” says Faith AmigoChoplin. Along with others, Choplin’s prepares meals to feed more than 500 homeless families within our community and surrounding areas. “We’re reminded every day that we are all in this together and to make sure we don’t forget about each other.” Choplin’s also continues their Luke 14 Banquets (referring to the Bible’s parable of the great feast) serving neighbors a hearty, three-course meal complete with plates, tablecloths and candles – all a labor of love for the Choplin’s team.

When Nick Bonarrigo opened MI AMICHE in 2021, Nelson Bass welcomed him to the LKN community, and the two have become family. “When Nelson headed this community outreach more than two years ago, I was honored to be his first phone call,” shares Nick. “I have always thrived on giving back to our communities, and every day, we’re granted life on this earth, we should be focused on making a difference in other’s lives. There are so many people less fortunate who face adversity each and every day – without the same choices we’ve been granted. It’s been my privilege to be able to assist Watchmen of the Streets in their quest to serve the homeless in our region, and I extend my deepest gratitude to all those supporting our cause!”

Besides raising funds for more than 300,000 meals for children around the globe, TACOS4LIFE GRILL in Mooresville also supports the efforts of WOTS. “We’ve been able to support them to help those in need most months this year with 50-60 boxed lunches,” shares Owner Ed Babcock. “It’s a wonderful ministry that fits within our mission of addressing food security globally, regionally and locally. We also work closely with FMSC. org (Feed My Starving Children).” Ed and his wife, Missy, both felt God calling them to steward a portion of the resources He has entrusted to their care, with the opening of Tacos4Life in Mooresville. Every taco, burrito, quesadilla and kids’ meal sold includes the cost of an FMSC meal distributed to starving children around the globe. On average, they raise about 4,500-5,000 meals a week through routine sales, and to date, the Mooresville restaurant has contributed 325,266 meals. Ed says his employees have truly bought into the mission statement that hunger is the world’s most solvable problem.

Always community driven in its business philosophy, FRESH CHEF RESTAURANT in Cornelius also partners with Watchmen of the Streets. General Manager Rob Kelley, and his wife, Jeannette, have been involved with the mission since last January, and the restaurant is now an established stop on the WOTS route each week. “We are donating no less than 40 meals and sometimes as many as 60 meals,” Robert shares. “We were thrilled to have this opportunity to collaborate with WOTS, and our team is inspired by having a part in helping those less fortunate. We all look forward to Tuesdays – our delivery day!”

POMODORO’S ITALIAN AMERICAN

CAFe has been involved with Watchmen of the Streets for the past year, donating meals from their Mooresville restaurant several times throughout 2025. They’ve also been supporters of Dove House Advocacy Center in Statesville through the years. “Our fellow humans need a hand, and we all need some sort of help at some point. If we can all just do a little bit to help out, everyone can benefit,” shares Owner Michael “Natty” Berridge. Pomodoro’s offers a comfortable atmosphere, where servers make an effort to get to know guests on a personal level. Open since 1989, many customers grew up eating here as kids, and that warm sense of family continues today – both at the restaurant and throughout the community!

Owner Stacy White and her team at FAMOUS TOASTERY OF MOORESVILLE know they’ve been blessed by so much local support – and feel they are one big family

with their guests! “Several years ago, we were approached by Nelson at Blu Star Grill and given the opportunity to help. Along with other local restaurants, we donate meals monthly to those in need – and have helped purchase blankets, sleeping bags and other essentials for these neighbors. Famous Toastery also shows its support of veterans and first responders with daily discounts and donates gift cards to Richard’s Coffee Shop in downtown Mooresville every Veteran’s Day. They also regularly donate to the Make-a-Wish Foundation, Stand for Animals, the Wounded Warrior project and to local schools – a cause very dear to Stacy, a retired teacher.

This dedicated group of local businesses is always looking for likeminded local restaurants to join their efforts! If you own a restaurant in the Lake Norman area, please consider joining their mission to supply Watchmen of the Streets with nutritious meals for those who need it most. Contact Nelson Bass at 704.577.9934 or NelsonBass45@gmail.com for details! HOW TO INCREASE YOUR “FEEL-GOOD HORMONES” WITH SIMPLE LIFESTYLE HACKS

Hormones are chemical messengers produced in various glands of the body. They travel through the bloodstream to help the organs that keep our bodies healthy. There are about 50 hormones, but only a few that can make us feel happy, sometimes even euphoric. Three of these “feel-good hormones” are serotonin, dopamine and oxytocin. What’s amazing is that it’s very easy to increase each of these hormones naturally – and increase our own happiness –with simple lifestyle hacks.

SEROTONIN (“THE MOOD BOOSTER”)

About 10% of serotonin is made in the brainstem, and about 90% is made in the gut. Serotonin is a mood regulator that also influences our behavior. It helps us stay focused and makes us feel calm, stable and happy. Serotonin also impacts blood clotting, plays a role in our sleep/wake cycle, digestion, appetite and memory.

When serotonin is low, we are more likely to feel anxious and depressed. The most commonly used antidepressant medicines increase the level of serotonin in the brain. If you or a loved one take an antidepressant, you can probably attest to the positive effects of serotonin on mood.

You can increase your serotonin naturally with:

• Sunlight. 10 to 15 minutes of daily exposure to sunlight boosts serotonin levels. Those who don’t have access to sunlight may experience a drop in serotonin that causes a low mood known as seasonal affect

disorder (SAD). The treatment for SAD is artificial light therapy.

• Exercise. When we work out, our bodies release tryptophan, the amino acid that serotonin is made from. Five 30-minute aerobic workouts and two strength training sessions a week is enough to increase your level of serotonin.

• Food. It seems reasonable to assume that eating foods containing tryptophan, such as turkey, would increase serotonin. But fruits, vegetables, legumes and whole grains are more likely to accomplish this. These complex carbohydrates trigger insulin, which helps tryptophan reach the brain.

DOPAMINE (“THE REWARDER”)

Dopamine is made by nerve cells at the base of the brain and also by the adrenal glands. Dopamine is created when one amino acid, tyrosine, is converted to another amino acid, L-dopa. When enzymes act on L-dopa, it becomes dopamine. Dopamine plays a role in movement, memory, attention, sleep, kidney function and motivation. It’s called “the rewarder” because, when we do something pleasurable, the brain rewards us by releasing a large dose of dopamine. Dopamine makes us feel happy, motivated, focused and alert. It makes us want to repeat whatever triggers a dopamine reward. This is why junk food is so addictive!

When dopamine is low, our mood may also be low. Motivation and sex drive may be low, too. Low dopamine makes us feel tired and unhappy, and may result in memory loss, difficulty sleeping and make it hard to concentrate. Low dopamine is associated with restless leg syndrome, Parkinson’s disease and ADHD.

You can increase your dopamine naturally with:

• Food. Foods rich in tyrosine are known to increase dopamine. These include chicken, almonds, apples, avocados, bananas, beets, chocolate, green leafy vegetables and green tea.

• Relaxing activities. Any activity that relaxes you may trigger a dopamine reward. For many people, reading a book, exercising, yoga, playing with a dog or hiking in the woods may stimulate the release of dopamine.

OXYTOCIN (“THE LOVE HORMONE”)

Oxytocin is made by the hypothalamus gland but stored in and released by the pituitary gland. Oxytocin causes the uterus to contract during childbirth and moves breast milk toward the nipple. Both of these facilitate bonding between mother and baby. But, oxytocin also helps connect people socially and romantically. It is involved in creating trust, romantic attachment, relationship building and sexual arousal. That’s why oxytocin is called “the love hormone” or “the cuddle chemical!”

It’s uncommon to have a low level of oxytocin. But, when it does occur, it may play a role in bringing on depression, especially postpartum depression.

You can increase your oxytocin level naturally with:

• Hugs. Simply touching someone can increase his or her oxytocin! Cuddling, hugging, getting a massage and romantic intimacy can all stimulate the flow of oxytocin.

• Music. Music has a unique ability to connect and bond people, and oxytocin may be part of the reason. In one study, oxytocin levels were found to increase when measured before and after a group of people participated in improvised singing.

• Exercise. According to one study, exercise can also increase oxytocin. The study measured oxytocin in the saliva of participants after high-intensity martial arts training and found that it was elevated.

• Laughter. When we laugh, it triggers oxytocin which, experts remind us, is an important part of social bonding. As if to prove it, they claim that if you laugh on a date, you’ll be more likely to have a second date! (Worth a try, for sure!)

Marzano Capital Group ARE YOU PREPARED

FOR A 30 YEAR RETIREMENT?

The good news? Retirees are living longer. The bad news? Many aren’t planning for it financially.

Life expectancy is a key piece of retirement planning. After all, you’ll need to estimate your lifespan to determine how much money you’ll need to retire comfortably. Many pre-retirees speculate on this figure or overlook it entirely.

So, how long will you live? While no one has a crystal ball, the Social Security Administration provides an Actuarial Life Table that estimates the average man living to 65 will make it to 82, while the average woman will make it to 85.1 That’s not quite 30 years, but this isn’t an area where you want to estimate low.

Given the reality of increased longevity, retirement planning strategies must adapt. Here are some key considerations to help ensure financial stability throughout your golden years.

SAVING EARLY

It’s crucial to start saving for retirement as early as possible, even more so than previous generations. With the help of a financial advisor, create a plan that accounts for inflation and possible medical expenses that may come with old age. Beware of simple “rules of thumb” when it comes to retirement savings and get a professional opinion.

DELAYING SOCIAL SECURITY

If you anticipate a longer life expectancy, it’s worth considering postponing your Social Security benefit. For every year you delay collecting beyond your full retirement age your monthly payouts rise by 8%, up to age 70.2 After that, there’s no further increase. You can gauge your monthly benefit for different ages using your real income records.3

MAKING CATCH-UP CONTRIBUTIONS

As you get closer to retirement, consider catch-up contributions. These allow older savers to add extra amounts to tax-advantaged retirement accounts without surpassing IRS limits. In essence, it’s an opportunity to invest more now to ensure a larger fund during retirement.

DELAYING RETIREMENT

Naturally, postponing retirement is one way to account for a longer life span. Pushing back a few years could make all the difference. This may give you an opportunity to add additional contributions, avoid withdrawals, and to grant your funds more time for potential growth.

PHASING INTO RETIREMENT

Some individuals may choose to transition into part-time work rather than fully retiring, to supplement income and stay active. For instance, a music enthusiast might take up a position at a local record store or offer lessons to budding musicians. Or perhaps your career enables a phasing out approach, working fewer days or hours on your way to full retirement.

PLANNING FOR HEALTHCARE NEEDS

Longer life often comes with increased healthcare needs. Therefore, planning for long-term care and medical expenses, including possible insurance policies, is a vital component of longevity planning.

ADJUSTING YOUR INVESTMENT STRATEGY

Commonly, asset allocation as you near retirement involves a shift from more risky to more conservative investments. However, with the possibility of living 30 or more years into retirement, maintaining some level of growth-oriented investments may be necessary to ensure that savings can keep up with the costs of living and healthcare.

Are there other factors to consider when it comes to longevity? Absolutely. But hopefully this list gets you thinking about the importance of proper planning. Longevity is a gift that presents both opportunities and challenges. By recognizing the implications of increased life expectancy on retirement and proactively planning for longevity, retirees can ensure they are wellprepared to enjoy their golden years without the burden of financial stress.

“There’s always a big turnout on these Sundays, and we love families making it a yearly tradition,” shares Rich, who has been rumored to don a Buddy the Elf costume just for the occasion. “The best part is that many local families have been celebrating with us each of the 11 years Santa has been visiting Sweet Grass. They now have true family treasures – a photo of their child with our Santa for each of those 11 years. It’s truly the best way for us to give back to our loyal customers in the community!”

“Santa Sundays” are laid back afternoons, where everyone feels like family, and even pets are welcome to pose for a portrait with dear ‘ole St. Nick. Rich and Michelle suggest arriving early for tasty refreshments and plenty of time for photos!

Microplastics Are Everywhere : BUT HERE’S HOW YOU CAN PROTECT YOURSELF (ONE SMALL STEP AT A TIME)

Chances are, you’ve heard the word microplastics recently—and for good reason. These tiny plastic particles are turning up in our food, water, air, and even inside our bodies. In fact, research shows that the average person consumes the equivalent of a credit card’s worth of plastic every week. Pair that with “forever chemicals” (toxins that don’t break down in our environment), and it’s easy to feel overwhelmed.

But here’s the good news: while we can’t eliminate microplastics completely, we can reduce our exposure. Small, consistent changes in our daily lives really do add up—and over time, they not only protect our health, but also support a cleaner environment for future generations.

Here are a few simple, actionable steps you can take right now:

1. SKIP THE PLASTIC BAGS

Why: Single-use plastic bags are one of the biggest contributors to microplastic pollution. They break down into tiny particles that end up in waterways and soil.

Try this instead: Bring your own reusable bags when you shop. Forgot them? Ask for

paper instead of plastic.

2. DON’T MICROWAVE PLASTIC

Why: Heat causes plastic containers to break down and release microplastics and harmful chemicals directly into your food.

Try this instead: Use glass or ceramic dishes for reheating. (Pro tip: glass storage containers are sturdier, longer lasting, and look better in your fridge!)

3. SWAP OUT PLASTIC WATER BOTTLES

Why: Plastic bottles can shed microplastics into your water, especially when they’ve been exposed to heat.

Try this instead: Carry a stainless steel or glass water bottle. Bonus: it saves money and keeps your drinks colder longer.

4. RETHINK FOOD STORAGE

Why: Plastic wrap, baggies, and Tupperware can all leach tiny particles into food over time.

Try this instead: Transition to glass containers, silicone bags, or beeswax wraps. You don’t have to toss everything at once—replace items little by little as they wear out.

5. CHOOSE FRESH OVER PACKAGED (WHEN YOU CAN)

Why: Highly processed and packaged foods often come in layers of plastic, which increases exposure.

Try this instead: Shop the outer aisles of the grocery store—produce, dairy, and fresh proteins. Bring your own produce bags for an extra win.

6. WASH SMART

Why: Synthetic fabrics (like polyester) shed microplastics every time they’re washed, which end up in our water systems.

Try this instead: Use a microplastic-catching laundry bag or filter, and when possible, choose natural fabrics like cotton or linen.

REMEMBER: PROGRESS, NOT PERFECTION

It’s impossible to avoid microplastics entirely—but that doesn’t mean our choices don’t matter. Think of it as a journey: swap one plastic item for a glass one, switch to a reusable bottle, or commit to saying “no thanks” to plastic bags. Each step compounds over time, protecting your health and sending less plastic into our environment.

When you know better, you can do better—and even the smallest step is a powerful move toward a healthier you and a cleaner world.

BANISH THE BLUES AT ANY TIME OF THE YEAR

When I tell my northern family and friends that winter “is a real thing here,” they think I’ve forgotten where I come from! But, you know what I mean, right? We experience temperatures below freezing, ice storms and an occasional dusting of the white stuff now and then. In fact, my very first southern winter brought with it a bona fide winter snowstorm! It was then that I regretted leaving behind my winter survival kit complete with ice scrapers and snow shovels. But, there was one thing I didn’t forget – my “banish the blues” strategy that is at the ready 365 days of the mostly sunny year.

UNDERSTANDING “THE BLUES”

Everyone experiences the blues from time to time. That’s right, everyone. We recognize those unwelcome feelings of gloominess, sadness, being out-of-sorts or down in the dumps. Almost always, though, we feel blue for a reason. I haven’t always agreed with the research on this, but I’ve come to realize that when I’m down, it’s because something has triggered me. It could be the consequence of a decision that didn’t work out as expected, a challenge in a relationship that really

matters or an unfavorable diagnosis that has to be dealt with. It could be anything. When this happens, we might fear that we are depressed. LCSW Cynthia Catchings differentiates:

“Depression is stronger than feeling the blues. When depression is present, it’s more difficult, and sometimes nearly impossible, to stay motivated or complete our daily activities. Conversely, feeling the blues is more of a state of sadness, but we’re still able to perform our daily activities.”

A STRATEGY FOR BANISHING THE BLUES

While you may feel the urge to lay low, isolate or blame yourself, doing so isn’t helpful because it can reinforce those blue feelings. Here are seven actions you can take instead:

1. Get introspective to identify the source of your feelings. Remember, there is almost always a reason for feeling blue. Once you understand what that is, consider what actions you can take to address the cause or at least work with it. Maybe you can’t actually change anything, but you can at least take a lesson from it – if you are willing to look for it.

2. Express yourself. Having the blues is no time for self-imposed isolation. Seek out that friend who is a great listener so that you can unburden a little and be reminded of the fact that you are not alone. Balance that by also connecting with the one who pumps you up with positivity and good vibes. That’s what your “She Circles” are for!

3. Take care of yourself. You know what this means – don’t stop doing all of the disciplined good things that support you mentally, emotionally, physically and socially. Also use this bluesy pause to consider the bigger picture. Ask yourself: Are there a few lifestyle changes that are in order? Habits that aren’t serving me that I need to work on? Would I benefit from modifying my daily routine? When the blues found me a few months back, I recognized that one action I could take was to get back into the discipline of engaging with more obscure words by relearning (it’s been a while) their Greek and Latin origins. That may not be up your alley, but I know that something else is.

4. Laugh...a lot! Laughter is healing, period. It’s a “habit” we can lose if we allow the ups and downs of life to make us somber. We need to laugh more, blues or no blues. Watch funny movies or tried and true sitcoms, read old timey comics, play board games or try laughing yoga. Also known as Hasya yoga, this practice combines the joyful act of voluntary laughter with the calming breathwork of yoga. I think I may look into it, LOL!

5. Treat yourself. I won’t even describe this one because you know exactly how “treat” translates for you.

6. Get outside. I know it’s cold out there right now, but that’s what those fuzzy hats and gloves you acquire over the holidays are for. Remember that nature provides its own therapy.

7. Listen to music. One study noted that listening to upbeat or cheerful music significantly improves both short- and long-term mood. Other research – which may sound counter intuitive – found that many of us experience “emotional resonance” when we listen to the blues. We feel heard, understood and comforted there. I’m in!

MODERN FABRICS: INSPIRED BY TEXTURE

Creative Ways to Use Unique & Beautiful Fabrics in Your Home

There’s something magical about fabric — the way color, pattern, and texture can instantly shift the mood of a room. With just a yard or two of the right textiles, an ordinary corner becomes a cozy retreat, a blank wall turns into art, and everyday objects take on entirely new life. Modern-Fabric.com has long been a trusted source for designers and DIY-minded dreamers, thanks to its curated selection of fabrics that are anything but ordinary. From bold contemporary prints to richly textured weaves, the possibilities for creative expression are endless.

TURN WALLS INTO WORKS OF ART

One of the easiest — and most unexpected — ways to showcase a stunning fabric is to treat it like artwork. Large-scale prints can be stretched over a wooden frame for a beautiful, custom wall hanging. Smaller remnants can be framed individually and hung as a series for a gallerystyle installation. This approach is perfect for renters or anyone hesitant to commit to wallpaper, providing the same visual impact with far more flexibility.

ELEVATE EVERYDAY FURNITURE

Reupholstering a chair or ottoman is a classic way to introduce new fabric, but thinking beyond traditional upholstery opens up even more opportunities. Consider wrapping a simple wooden bench in a vibrant geometric print or adding a bold fabric panel to the back of a bookcase to bring depth and color to a room.

Even a basic headboard becomes a statement piece when covered in a textured chenille, a luxurious velvet, or a hand-painted textile.

DRESS UP YOUR LIGHTING

Lamps are often overlooked, yet a fabric lampshade can completely transform the character of a room. A soft linen or woven cotton creates a cozy glow, while a patterned shade becomes a striking design element during the day. For a custom touch, consider recovering an old shade with a fabric that complements your drapes or throw pillows. Pendant lights can also benefit from fabric — drum shades wrapped in modern prints add personality to kitchens, dining rooms, or bedrooms.

LAYER WITH INTENTION

Throw pillows may be the easiest way to update a room, but combining fabrics with intention makes the look feel professionally styled. Mix textures — like a chunky woven textile paired with a smooth velvet — or pair small-scale prints with bold, oversized florals for visual interest. A few yards of coordinating fabric can also be transformed into a casually draped throw, a custom bed scarf, or a stylish cover for a reading nook cushion.

STYLE SMALL SPACES WITH BIG PERSONALITY

Sometimes the most charming uses of fabric come from unexpected places. A narrow

hallway becomes more inviting with a runner sewn from durable cotton or canvas. A simple stool can be topped with a playful pattern to bring life to a workspace or kitchen corner. Even decorative storage boxes can be wrapped in fabric remnants for a cohesive, polished look.

SET THE TABLE IN STYLE

Dining spaces are the perfect canvas for beautiful textiles. Handmade table runners, reversible placemats, or fabric-wrapped napkin rings add warmth and elegance to everyday meals. For special occasions, consider layering multiple fabrics — a grounding neutral underneath a bold seasonal print — to create a tablescape that feels both curated and personal.

LET YOUR IMAGINATION LEAD

Unique fabrics encourage creativity. Whether a project is big or small, the right textile has the power to elevate the ordinary into something beautiful. With the incredible selection available at Modern-Fabric.com, inspiration is only a click away — and every yard holds the promise of transformation.

Aquaventure Boat Club SPREADING THE JOY OF FAMILY TIME ON THE LAKE

Atrue connoisseur of lake life, Dustin Keith is passionate about keeping families together – and making memories on the water!

He’s found the perfect niche with his 100% family owned and operated Aquaventure Boat Club, the longest running club on the lake. You’ll feel the difference starting with your first phone call or visit to one of their locations – at the All Seasons Marina location in Mooresville and The Landing location in Sherrills Ford. You can book a boat at either location – and most members visit both regularly, depending on their current location and family activity schedule. Dustin also prefers meeting prospective new boat club members face to face!

“I always tell people looking at a boat club membership that this is a true boating ‘family’ and to almost think of it as a marriage!” he shares. “We like to make sure we’re truly a good fit for them and that we’re 100% positive we can provide them with everything their family wants.”

Dustin’s main mission in creating Aquaventure 17 years ago was to provide an affordable way for the average family to get out on the water and spend much-needed quality time together.

“Boating with my family as a kid was some of the most fun times I’ve ever had and really gave me some of my greatest memories,” he explains. “That’s exactly what I want to produce with Aquaventure.”

everything in between. All club members have equal use and privileges (no tiered structures within your membership) – and the club is open year-round with not only boat rentals included, but also kayaks, paddle boards, surf boards, water skis and all other water sports equipment.

“We also own our own marina with a waterfront hotel, waterfront restaurant, ice cream shop and Tiki Bar – plus our club

Dustin also outlines the advantages of joining a boat club versus boat ownership.

“When looking at the cost of club membership versus boat ownership, a membership in our club is usually less expensive than even just leasing a boat slip to keep your boat in. For an amazing price, our members can be boating on vessels that would be well over a $1,600 per month payment – how exciting to have unlimited use of a fleet of more than four million dollars worth of boats – for only $279 a month! Yet another benefit members rave about is the ease of boating with our club’s services. Their boat is ready to go when they arrive, we help them with any water sports equipment they want to try, we fit the kids for lifejackets and, when they return, we clean everything up and put it away!” he adds.

If you’re wondering what sets Aquaventure Boat Club apart, simply consider their varied options, from surf boats, cabin cruisers and double-decker pontoons, to jet skis and

yacht and party boat are capable of taking up to 30 members out at a time for special events,” Dustin adds.

While the fleet depicted on the website is a good representation, Dustin suggests the best way to view every boat offered is to schedule a tour. Many new vessels are constantly being added!

Aquaventure also offers introductory lessons for all new boat club members – regardless of prior boating experience – that include the basics of safety equipment, starting and stopping the engine, boating safety, life preservers and what to do in the event of an emergency. Lessons also cover the fundamentals of “boatmanship” that are so important as you navigate life on the lake.

Proud of the families that are making the most of club memberships and time together, Dustin also happily shares that every member helps provide food and medicine for dozens of children around the world, sponsored by Aquaventure.

“A portion of our membership dues goes to fund charities we truly believe in such as Compassion International, JAARS and Present Age Ministries,” Dustin explains.

There are so many amazing reasons to launch your very own Aquaventure Boat Club membership! To schedule a tour of the boat club and its current fleet, call 704.724.0996 and visit aquaventureboatclub.com for more details on membership. Follow them on Instagram @aquaventureboatclub.

ONE JOURNEY OF ENDURING FAITH

Cycling coast to coast was not exactly on Jack Hamel’s to-do list, but life often has a way of steering you towards the right path.

In Jack’s case, it was a bike path! When a friend, Curtis Johnson, asked him if he’d like to ride his bicycle across the country, it sounded like exactly the physical and mental challenge he needed.

A journey from the Pacific Northwest of Washington State to the Atlantic Ocean in Portland, Maine became their itinerary, and faith – as always – became their guide.

“Being a new Christian, it wasn’t until later that I realized it would also be a test of my faith,” shares Jack. “Later, I established why I wanted to take the trip – I wanted to show others how to lean on God and use His word to get through tough times. I created

an Instagram following my journey with confessionals and scenic shots (follow @ Learning_with_God for more).

Not always an avid cyclist, Jack shares that he only rode between 500 to 1,000 miles while training.

“I was picked up last August 15th at 3:00 a.m., loaded my bicycle and gear in the back of a rented truck and we headed toward Anacortes, Washington,” Jack explains. “It was a 41-hour drive, and we arrived in under 48 hours! The following day we turned the truck in and rode our bikes to the starting line. We finished the ride 42 days later in Portland, 30 miles from the town we both grew up in – Waterboro, Maine. The total trip was 3,607 miles – while climbing more than 123,000 feet of elevation – yet we only took one day off during the trip – and that was in Iowa. The entire ride lasted from August 17th until September 27th of this year.”

Continued on page 46.

Continued from page 44.

While dealing with chafing, seat pains and four flat tires each, Jack also developed tendonitis in his Achilles tendon.

“There was knee pain, plus two straight weeks of headwinds in the midwest, I had a breakup with my girlfriend back home and we rode through a record-setting rainfall in Albany, New York,” Jack explains. “The last two weeks, we were riding sun up to past sun down to make up for a slower pace through

the mountains and headwinds. Pedaling an average of 10 to 12 hours a day left us in such discomfort, and we were constantly shifting positions to get comfortable! Balancing that with fatigue, I often found myself praying – asking for strength, perseverance and discipline.”

While the views and terrain were incredible throughout the trip, Jack shares that his favorite part of the adventure was all the people they met and spoke with along the way.

“Taking a trip like this with little preparation was a huge leap of faith, and I had to trust God would keep me safe from cars, wildlife and physical injury,” he adds. “His strength got me through the toughest thing I have ever done – and I owe Him extreme gratitude!”

Jack dedicated his amazing ride to raising awareness and support for the Fellowship of Christian Athletes (FCA), and he is proud to be able to help them grow!

“FCA teaches strong values and creates leaders within the community,” he explains. “I met Jeramy Smith through my church, and he is the missionary behind LKN FCA creating such a large impact in the community.”

ABOUT THE FELLOWSHIP OF CHRISTIAN ATHLETES (FCA)

Since 1954, the Fellowship of Christian Athletes (FCA) has been inspiring athletes and coaches to live boldly for Christ — both on and off the field. Through Bible studies, leadership training, and community outreach, FCA equips student athletes to use their talents and influence to make a difference in the world.

Here in Lake Norman, the local FCA chapter is led by missionary Jeramy Smith, who partners with schools, coaches, and athletic programs to bring faith-based mentorship to campuses across the region. FCA “Huddles” meet weekly to encourage athletes to live out their faith with integrity, teamwork, and perseverance.

Every dollar raised supports FCA’s mission to transform lives through the love of Christ — helping build leaders who influence their teams, schools, and communities for generations to come. In his cross-country ride, Jack Hamel raised close to $12,000 for FCA, which helped replace an HVAC unit, send more kids to leadership camp, and complete a fishing boat project for spring 2026

All Aboard the Christmas Spirit THE REAL-LIFE SANTA OF THE POLAR EXPRESS™ IN SPENCER, NC

For as long as he can remember, Chad Blankenship has carried the joy of Christmas deep in his heart. Born on September 4, 1984 and raised in Statesville, North Carolina, Chad is married to his loving wife, Ashley, and together they have two children – Camilla (10) and Christian (4).

When he’s not spreading holiday magic, Chad works at Staples in Clemmons, NC and leads the choir at Edgewood Baptist Church in North Cooleemee, where his faith and music fill the sanctuary each week. But, when winter arrives, Chad takes on a role that feels truly heaven-sent…Santa Claus aboard the Polar Express™ at the North Carolina Transportation Museum in Spencer.

A CALLING WRAPPED IN RED

Chad’s journey to becoming Santa wasn’t something he planned. Though he had dressed as Santa for fun or work events, including a stint in the Lexington Christmas Parade, he hadn’t considered making it official until the spring of 2024.

“The Lord put a feeling in my heart that this was His plan for me,” Chad recalls. “That’s when I knew I had to take it seriously.”

With his real beard, joyful spirit and kind heart, the role came naturally. “The first time I put on the suit, it felt surreal,” he says. “It’s larger than life, and it’s a blessing to share that joy with others.”

TRAINING WITH THE PROS

In August 2024, Chad attended Pro Santa School in Charlotte, NC, joining a room full of men who shared his passion for Christmas. The experience taught him everything from professional presentation to the emotional side of portraying Santa.

“When I saw all the other Santas, my eyes lit up like a Christmas tree,” Chad says. “They call it the Santa brotherhood and that’s exactly what it is. There’s no competition, just camaraderie.”

The training helped him realize that being Santa isn’t about pretending; it’s about becoming. “Children believe,” he says, “...and that belief is something sacred.”

THE MAGIC OF THE POLAR EXPRESS™

After graduating from Santa school, Chad applied for the role of Santa on the Polar Express™ at the NC Transportation Museum. When he got the job, he said, “I felt like a kid on Christmas morning all over again.”

While he can’t reveal behind-the-scenes details due to licensing restrictions, Chad says the experience is magical from start to finish. “You can see it in the kids’ faces; it’s a place where everyone gets to believe again.”

One of his most memorable moments came when a mother brought her two daughters to meet Santa. “The youngest was giving up her pacifier,” he recalls. “She saved the last one for Santa. Moments like that melt your heart.”

FAITH, FAMILY AND THE TRUE MEANING OF CHRISTMAS

Though playing Santa brings immense joy, Chad admits it’s not without challenges. “The hardest part is being away from my family during the season,” he says. Still, his wife and children are his biggest supporters.

To look the part, Chad’s beard goes through two bleaching sets and two color treatments each year. But, the real preparation comes from his faith.

“Having the joy of the Lord in my heart is what keeps the magic alive,” he says. “He’s the reason for the season. My prayer is that everyone who rides the Polar Express™ leaves with a renewed belief in Christmas.”

KEEPING THE JOY ON TRACK

When the red suit is put away, Chad’s favorite tradition is watching Christmas movies with his family; simple moments that remind him why he loves the season.

“Being Santa is one of the greatest feelings I’ve ever had,” he says. “To share joy, to see smiles –that’s what Christmas is all about.”

And, as for the future? Chad says, “If it’s the Lord’s will, I’ll be Santa for many years to come.”

For more information on the NC Transportation Museum at 1 Samuel Spencer Drive, Spencer, NC and the holiday activities, including The Polar Express™, visit nctransportationmuseum. org. Santa Claus will be onsite November 7th–December 23rd, 2025; times vary. Check the website or call 704.636.2889.

SPIRITILES AND STORIES: HOW HOUSTON LLEW TURNS FIRE INTO JOY

Some artists stumble upon their craft by chance, but for Houston Llew, art found him at exactly the right time. In the aftermath of the Great Recession, when the world felt uncertain and gray, Llew was searching for something meaningful. What he discovered was a centuries-old process called vitreous enameling – the fusing of glass to copper through intense heat. The first time he saw it, he was hooked.

“The process felt alive – equal parts unpredictable and miraculous,” he recalls. That spark ignited what would become Spiritiles, Llew’s luminous collection of glass-and-copper works that capture moments of joy, love and connection. Each piece begins with a quote or

sentiment and blossoms into a visual story –designed to make people feel something real.

THE ARTIST’S LINEAGE

Every artist has a story, and Llew’s includes a remarkable lineage of mentorship. He learned the intricate craft from Zingaro, an artist who studied under Craig Ruwe, one of the great enamellists of his time. Through them, Llew inherited not only a rare skill but also a philosophy – to respect the process, embrace imperfection and let the materials lead the way.

“What I learned went beyond technique,” he says. “It was about finding grace in imperfection and honoring the materials themselves.”

A DAY IN THE STUDIO

Inside Llew’s Charleston, South Carolina studio, creativity hums like a heartbeat. You’ll hear copper being cut, glass sifted, kilns roaring at 1500°F. The air is alive with focus and laughter. Each Spiritile passes through many hands – layered, fired and inspected with care – before it earns Llew’s final approval.

“There’s pride in what we do,” he says. “We’re creating something meaningful together.”

STORIES THAT SHINE

Every Spiritile starts with a story. Sometimes it’s a quote about courage or love, other times it’s a quiet reflection on gratitude or friendship. The words come first, then the image – or maybe it’s the other way around. Llew says intuition takes over once the piece goes into the kiln. The heat transforms it, adding texture and unpredictability that make every tile one of a kind.

“Vitreous enamel bridges art and science,” he says. “The permanence of copper meets the

volatility of glass, and fire binds them. The result is something alive.”

FROM UNCERTAINTY TO ILLUMINATION

Llew’s story – and his art – carry themes of transformation. “When I started this journey, I was rebuilding,” he shares. “Taking raw copper and glass and turning it into something luminous became a metaphor for resilience.” That philosophy runs through every Spiritile – the idea that light and beauty can emerge from even the hardest seasons.

Based in a city steeped in craft and history, Llew finds endless inspiration in Charleston’s rhythm and reflection. “This place values authenticity and artistry,” he says. “That energy is in everything we create.”

CREATING HAPPINESS

At the heart of it all is a simple motto: We create happiness. Llew and his team live by it daily, and it shows in their work. From the Fall Collection, which celebrates connection and curiosity, to the Limited Edition Holiday Spiritile #305 “Heart of Christmas,” each release captures moments that resonate far beyond the studio.

Spiritiles are found in galleries nationwide –something Llew insists is essential to their magic. “Art should be experienced in person – held, turned and felt,” he says. “That’s when the real connection happens.”

This holiday season, that connection comes to life close to home. You can experience the radiant craftsmanship of Houston Llew’s Spiritiles in person at Juelerye, where artist-made and handcrafted aren’t exceptions – they’re the standard. Nestled in the heart of downtown Mooresville, Juelerye invites visitors to discover one-of-a-kind art and fine craft, each piece selected for its story and soul.

As Llew puts it, “Every Spiritile begins with a story and ends with a smile.” And now, that story continues – shared, held and cherished by those who find light in the fire.

Juelerye is located at 112 S. Main Street, Mooresville, NC, 28115, and is open seven days a week – making it the perfect stop to find something truly meaningful this season.

Gifts For Your Girls: HEARTFELT GESTURES… LAKE NORMAN STYLE!

You’ve celebrated absolutely everything together – from milestone birthdays and weddings to those much-needed “girl nights” filled with laughter and stories you’ll never forget.

As the years go by, we all realize that friendship itself is the greatest gift of all – but a thoughtful, heartfelt gesture never hurts! Here are a few creative ways to show your favorite girls just how much they mean to you this holiday season.

1. PICTURE-PERFECT MEMORIES

Spend an afternoon exploring charming downtown Mooresville, snapping photos along Main Street and ducking into your favorite shops and cafés. Then, print your favorite images in a keepsake photo book, or create a framed collage to give at your next girls’ gathering.

2. MAGNOLIA MOMENTS

Surprise your friends with self care gifts from Magnolia Soap & Bath Co. in Denver –lovely handmade soaps, scrubs and bath bombs that turn an ordinary evening into a spa retreat. Wrap these little luxuries in pretty ribbon with a note that says, “Because you deserve some ‘me’ time!”

3. THE CHARM OF TRADITION

If your friend group has shared adventures over the years, start a charm bracelet or

necklace tradition. Add a new charm every year that symbolizes an amazing trip, an inside joke or a milestone you’ve celebrated together.

4. SIP, SAVOR & CELEBRATE

Plan a private or small group wine tasting at the beautiful Dynamis Estate Wines – or gift a bottle (or two) from your favorite local vineyard with a custom tag that says “Cheers to us!” For an at-home twist, host your own tasting night with matching glasses and gourmet pairings.

5. A GIRLS’ GETAWAY IN LAKE LIFE STYLE

Trade the boxes and gift wrap for true experiences by planning a lakeside weekend together with your girls! Book a cozy Airbnb, or rent a boat, kayak or paddleboard for a day of fun on the water with Aquaventure Boat Club (with marinas in both Mooresville and Sherrills Ford). Whether you spend the day cruising, floating or just laughing in the sun, it’s a memory your friends will treasure.

6. COZY NIGHT IN? YES, PLEASE!

You can’t go wrong with matching heated slippers, comfy robes or festive pajamas from Bliss by the Lake Boutique in Mooresville. Add popcorn, your favorite movie lineup and a “no phones allowed” rule for laughter that lasts all night.

7. CRAFT & CREATE TOGETHER

Try something new together with a floral design workshop from The Blossomist (they serve the

Lake Norman and Charlotte areas). You’ll leave with something beautiful – and plenty of sweet memories made in the process.

8. GIVE BACK TOGETHER

Honor your friendship by giving back locally – support Watchmen of the Streets, Bags of Hope or Love Our Veterans (LOV). You’ll warm hearts while celebrating the bond you share!

9. THE “PERFECT SENSE” BASKET –LKN EDITION

Create a “five senses” basket using local treasures:

• Smell: A hand-poured candle from a favorite local maker.

• Taste: Olive oil and balsamic from LKN Olive and Vine in Denver.

• Sight: A framed photo from your latest girls’ adventure.

• Sound: A QR code playlist labeled “Girls, Laughter & Lake Days.”

• Touch: Your very own cozy LKN Blanket from Sweet Grass Boutique in Mooresville.

Friendship truly is the gift that keeps giving all year long – but wrapping it with a bit of thoughtfulness (and maybe a splash of Lake Norman love) makes it even sweeter. Whether it’s a heartfelt note, a shared experience or a small local treasure, your best girls will always appreciate the reminder of how much they mean to you.

A COLLABORATION OF WRITERS

Something mysterious was going on in the Scuppernong Room at the Trilogy Lake Norman community center, for more than a year.

If you passed by on a Tuesday afternoon, you’d have found five members of the “Adventures in Writing Club,” huddled together, bent over their computers. Around the table, two poets, Annette Larkin and John Stickney; a sci-fi writer, James Salkeld; and two historical fiction writers, E. Jax Willoughby and Sandra Warren, were doing what some thought impossible – writing a cozy crime mystery – together. Yes, that’s correct. All five were attempting to write a novel!

It all started with a suggestion to write a murder mystery play and quickly morphed into writing a novel instead. No one voiced the possibility that it couldn’t be done. It’s safe to say, however, a collaboration of this kind could only happen with respect, something these writers had in spades. They respected each other’s imagination, creativity and writing skills. And, even though not everyone had publishing credits, no one writer had more control than the other.

From week to week, the writers, now known as the Lake Norman Writers Guild, developed interesting characters, created a setting ripe for mischief, produced a crime with many suspects and dropped in a few red-herrings.

Inspired by the community in which they all live, the writers gleaned and tweaked their experiences to form a tapestry of guilt and intrigue that you could, but hopefully won’t, find in any active adult community.

The Lake Norman Writers Guild is proud to present their first crime novel, Auras of Deceit: A Trivolity Cozy Mystery, hot off the press in time for holiday shopping. This cozy mystery marries a lighthearted look at life in an active adult community with daring and intrigue, when a “game of murder” goes horribly wrong.

Auras of Deceit debuted at a book launch on December 2nd at the Trilogy Lake Norman Event Center. It is available on Amazon in paperback and on Kindle.

Members of the Lake Norman Writers Guild are available singularly, or as a group, for book talks in person or via Zoom sessions.

MEMBERS OF THE LAKE NORMAN WRITERS GUILD ARE:

Annette Larkin – Corporate escapee, life coach, world traveler and aspiring poetess.

James Salkeld – A retired programmer who can finally pursue

his passion for writing. His debut speculative fiction novel will be released in 2026.

John Stickney – A writer of poetry and short crime fiction whose works have appeared in print and online magazines: Tough, Needles, ThugLit, and Demolition, among others.

Sandra Warren – An award-winning author with publications in multiple genres. sandrawarren.com

E. Jax Willoughby – Author of Comfort’s Rebellion, a historical fiction novel. jaxwilloughby.com

One Man’s Perspective RAINBOWS

Genesis 9:12-16 ~ God said, “This is the sign of the covenant I am making between me and you and every living creature with you, a covenant for all generations to come: I have set my rainbow in the clouds, and it will be the sign of the covenant between me and the earth. Whenever I bring clouds over the earth and the rainbow appears in the clouds, I will remember my covenant between me and you and all living creatures of every kind. Never again will the water become a flood to destroy all life. Whenever the rainbow appears in the clouds, I will see it and remember the everlasting covenant between God and all living creatures of every kind on the earth.”

My wife Marianne has a thing about rainbows, and I would like to share her thoughts with you.

“My entire adult life I have loved rainbows. Every time I see one, I remember that God’s promises are forever. I love telling my rainbow stories.

One of the first rainbows I remember was when I was driving to work in New Jersey just weeks after I moved there; I took a side road through an area called the Duke Estates. I looked out the right window and there was a huge rainbow. Not just one but a double rainbow. It was so beautiful that I stopped my car and got out just to be able to stand in the presence of God. I remember the incredible peace that filled my body. Many times, when we were sailing, we saw rainbows,

and it was like a kiss on the cheek from my heavenly father.

But the best part of the story is to come.

Margie, my friend, and I got in the car and headed home, and Margie said “Marianne, look up!”  I could not believe my eyes. There had been no rain all day but in the sky was one of the most beautiful rainbows I’d ever seen…. the reason it was the most beautiful because I knew it was just for us. God was smiling down blessing our obedience. He is good… all the time!

One day we were driving toward the camp where Seaside Emmaus holds their Walks. It had been a particularly difficult time for the team involved with Satan working overtime. As we drove toward the camp not knowing what kind of problems we would face Charlie said, “look up in the sky”. I looked up and there was a beautiful rainbow that looked like it landed right on top of the camp. It was as if God was saying “It is in My Hands”.

I knew that eventually I would be asked to serve as Lay Director. I approached this with apprehension and joy. It is quite an honor, but I wasn’t sure I was up to the challenge. I wanted to wait till fall for several reasons, the weather would be nicer, I might be able to get some folks who had served on this team, etc. etc.

I said no a few times but then they ran out of names, so I decided I had no choice. I can’t do it, but God can.

During the weekend, I looked down and there was a piece of paper with a bible scripture on it. It was Proverbs 16:3 – Commit to the Lord whatever you do, and your plans will succeed. That was HIS promise to me.

As we left the building that evening someone said, “look up, there is a beautiful rainbow in the sky”. What better confirmation could you have?

God is good……all the time!

Recently a few of the “girls” decided to ride up to Fort Mill to visit an old friend who was in an Assisted Living facility. We got there in time to have a nice visit and lunch and then headed home. We stopped for coffee and small talk to break up the trip. Rainbows came up in our conversation, and I told them my “rainbow” stories. We sat there and cherished the gift God had given us. We got in the car to finish our drive home, and it started to rain. It wasn’t long till someone said, “look to your left”. Yes, you guessed it. There was a rainbow in the sky. Once again God reminded us of his faithfulness and His pleasure of our conversation centering on His goodness.”

I hope that you have enjoyed Marianne’s true stories of rainbows in her life.

919 Backyard BBQ DOUBLE SMOKED SPIRAL HAM

For December I wanted to share a go to holiday dish that I love doing - a double smoked spiral ham! This is a simple recipe that doesn’t require a whole lot of prep - so it’s perfect for feeding a group and pretty hands off so you can enjoy quality time! I always do this in a smoker, running around 250 degrees, but I’m sure this would turn out just fine in the oven as well!

Ingredients:

• 1 Spiral Cut Bone-in Ham

• Seasoning of choice: I like a sweet heat type of rub for this, there are so many options (Meat Church Honey Hog Hot, Cuso’s Hot Honey are two that work great on this)

• You can also mix together some ingredients you may have in the pantry already for a great sweet heat homemade rub - 1 Cup Brown Sugar, 1/2 tsp mustard powder, 1/2 tsp cayenne pepper (or more if you like it spicy), 1/4 tsp onion powder, 1 tsp paprika & some cracked black pepper & salt to taste

• Glaze:

• 1.5 Cups of Texas Pete Honey Mustard

Instructions:

• Preheat smoker to 250

• Season ham all over and get into the crevices of the spiral cuts for maximum flavor

• Place ham in a disposable half steam pan

• Smoke at 250 until the thickest part get to an internal temp of around 130 (usually around 2-3 hours, can be more if the ham is large)

• Mix together the glaze (Honey Mustard + Honey) you can even throw a little of the sweet heat seasoning in there with it

• Once the ham is temping at 130 Brush the glaze all over the ham, and place it back in the smoker

• It just needs a little while for the glaze to stick on there, so keep an eye on it and pull when you’re at 140 internal (around 20 minutes or so)

• Pull the ham, let it rest for 5-10 minutes before slicing it up

• Note: for easy slicing, you can cut a circle around the bone and it should easily fall apart. Then slice through the ham along the seams which are the natural breaks

• 2-3 Tablespoons Honey For more recipes and demos, follow me on Instagram: @919backyardbbq

Joyful Journey THE NC CHINESE LANTERN FESTIVAL CELEBRATES A DECADE OF WONDER

PICTURE THIS

You step through the gates as twilight melts into darkness. Ahead, a path winds between trees – but these aren’t ordinary pines. They glow. They pulse. They tell stories whispered across oceans and centuries.

Then you see it – a dragon. Not just any dragon. A 200-foot crimson serpent floating impossibly across Symphony Lake, its scales shimmering with around 600,000 LED lights and its head raised 21 feet into the winter sky. It took a crane and 15 people just to install the head. It weighs as much as a small house.

Welcome to the North Carolina Chinese Lantern Festival, where 2,000-year-old tradition meets cutting edge artistry. This isn’t just a local event. Only six communities nationwide host Tianyu Arts & Culture festivals – Seattle, Oakland, Oklahoma City, Little Rock, Orlando and right here in Cary. North Carolina is in extraordinary company. Located at Koka Booth Amphitheatre, Cary and running November 15, 2025 – January 11, 2026, this event promises to dazzle with brilliant displays.

Chinese artisans are crafting more than 40 new displays for this milestone celebration, each composed of hundreds of parts and thousands of LED lights. Every lantern is created exclusively for this event – silk stretched over steel frames, handpainted in intricate detail, then illuminated from within by LEDs that turn metal and fabric into breathing art.

Materials ship from China through NC ports in Wilmington, requiring 15+ tractor-trailers just to deliver supplies. Twenty-five artisans spend weeks onsite assembling 36 lantern groupings that transform Booth Amphitheatre into another world entirely.

This is a spectacular adventure. Most visitors spend about an hour walking through the displays, but rush nothing. Every turn reveals something extraordinary:

• Tunnels of light where lanterns arch overhead.

• Creatures from mythology brought to glowing life.

• Cultural scenes depicting ancient stories and modern marvels.

• The iconic lake dragon that photographs can’t quite capture.

CULTURAL PERFORMANCES THAT AMAZE

Nightly stage shows at 5:30, 6:30, 7:30 and 8:30 p.m. feature traditional Chinese martial arts, dance, acrobatics and drum performances. These aren’t background entertainment – they’re showstoppers performed by the same artisans who build the lanterns.

Crispy spring rolls, sweet and sour chicken bites, wonton soup, coffee, beer, wine and hot chocolate (with optional Bailey’s for adults) warm you between displays with the flavors of fall festivals. Food trucks and vendors dot the amphitheater grounds.

Want fewer crowds and the magic of watching lanterns ignite against dusk? Book a Twilight Ticket for early entry 90 minutes before standard opening. Visitors rave about experiencing the transformation from natural light to illuminated wonder – and getting the best photos before peak crowds arrive.

FESTIVAL DETAILS

• When: November 15, 2025 – January 11, 2026

• Hours: 6:00 – 10:00 p.m. daily (closed Christmas Day)

• Location: Koka Booth Amphitheatre, 8003 Regency Parkway, Cary, NC 27518

• Date-specific tickets save money if you know your definite visit date, and children ages two and under enter free.

QUICK ESSENTIALS

• Self-guided walking tour (wheelchair accessible)

• Plan for 1+ hours

• Dress warmly – it’s outdoors

• No pets (service animals welcome)

• Free lesson plans available for educators (grades K-5)

• Follow @NCChineseLanternFestival on social media

Last year visitors came from all 50 states and six countries. Twentythree nights sold out completely. However, numbers don’t capture the moment a child sees a 200-foot dragon floating on water. They don’t describe the way silk glows when lit from within or how traditional Chinese culture bridges 2,000 years in a single lantern. They cannot explain why families return year after year, making this their annual holiday tradition.

This December, step into a world where art floats on water and stories glow in the dark. Where ancient tradition meets modern wonder. Where North Carolina welcomes Chinese artistry in a celebration that has become our own cherished tradition. You can purchase tickets now at boothamphitheatre.com or call 919.462.2025 for more information.

Dear

I’m a 34-year-old recently married woman. My husband and I are both incredibly successful at our young age and are content with our lives. We’ve been dating for a while and prioritized our careers before getting married. Now, we’re discussing starting a family. I’m almost embarrassed to write this because, overall, I’ve been blessed in my life. However, my story illustrates that growing up in a wealthy family doesn’t come without challenges. A healthy economic status doesn’t guarantee a great life. No matter how much money you have, problems arise, and no one is immune.

As a member of an affluent family, I never lacked for anything. However, I always felt the pressure to fulfill certain expectations, some of which were reasonable, while others were not. My mother’s family business sustained our lifestyle. Her father was a well-respected businessman and a pillar of our community. When he retired, my mother took over and insisted that my dad take a job within the company to keep an eye on him. She’s incredibly controlling. She uses her wealth and status to manipulate and control others. She was able to do the same to me until I graduated from college, started my own company and became self-sufficient. She often threatened to withhold my college funding if I didn’t comply with her wishes. I learned how to play her game early and managed to thrive despite her emotional abuse. I never took her criticism, judgments and negative comments seriously, realizing they were just alternative methods of control. I have my husband and great friends to love and support me, and I’ve limited the time I spend with my family. It’s been wonderful.

Here’s the issue – I wouldn’t let my parents pay for our wedding, which drove my mother crazy realizing she had no say, no control. Now that I’m married, she wants to see us more often and get more involved in our lives. She’s already starting to pressure us about having children. She’s making plans for the holidays and assumes we’ll be a part of them. My husband and I have already made plans to be out of town for Thanksgiving, a romantic getaway, and to visit my husband’s family for Christmas. I’m afraid to tell my mom. She’ll probably go ballistic, threaten to disown us or cut us out of the will. That might not be a bad thing if it happens. Am I being selfish or unfair? Why do I feel guilty? I’m feeling confused.

ASK DR. KEITH

Hey Samantha,

Navigating the holidays with family can be a real challenge. Some people are fiercely attached to traditions, and I believe it’s important to honor them. However, when you choose to get married, it’s crucial to be flexible with them. You’ll have two families to work with, and pleasing both can be difficult at times. Your primary responsibility is to your husband, so now would be a good time to create your own traditions and invite your families to participate on your terms. Setting healthy boundaries with your family is crucial, and the sooner you do it, the better. If you wait until you have children, their expectations and pressure to be involved will only increase. You are entitled to start your own traditions without your parents’ consent, and it’s your decision whether to include them or not. More importantly, don’t let the weight of their expectations ruin your holidays.

Unfortunately, your mother associates power with monetary value. While this might be true in the business world, it’s not necessarily the case in personal relationships. I want to clarify that I’m referring to monetary value, not wealth. In my opinion, true wealth has nothing to do with money. I believe it encompasses

factors like good health, a loving family and friends, joy, healthy self esteem, self worth and a fulfilling career that supports a lifestyle of contentment.

I admire your courage in breaking free from your mother’s control and forging your own path. Many people would succumb to manipulation and threats, allowing themselves to be controlled by money and fear. However, you’ve already demonstrated your strength and resilience. Use that strength to overcome any guilt you may feel.

Remember, the only times we should feel guilty, ashamed or remorseful are when we intentionally harm, deceive or hurt someone. Since your intentions are not harmful, you have no reason to feel guilty. Don’t let your mother make you feel that way. Your goal is to create a wonderful life for you and your husband, and that’s not selfish; it’s the right thing to do. You have the freedom to choose who gets to be a part of your life. Choose to surround yourself with good, supportive people and mitigate or eliminate the time you spend with the negative, even family. Don’t allow fear to be your guide. Establish healthy boundaries with your mom, and if she wants to be involved, she’ll comply.

MAKING ROOM FOR MAGIC: THE GIFT OF GIVING BEFORE CHRISTMAS

Afew weeks ago, while chatting with a volunteer at a local charity shop, she said something that completely shifted how I think about the holiday season. “I wish people would clear out their children’s old toys before Christmas instead of after,” she told me. “The week before Christmas, we have parents coming in desperate for gifts for their kids—but our shelves are bare. Then, the day after Christmas, we’re flooded with donations.”

Her words hit me hard. It’s such a simple idea, but one that can make an incredible difference. Every December, as children eagerly await Santa’s arrival, many families in our community quietly wonder how they’ll afford even a few gifts. While most of us think of toy donations in January—after we’ve organized and decluttered—doing it before the holidays could turn what’s old to one child into something brand new to another.

A FRESH WAY TO GIVE

If you know your child’s toy chest is about to overflow, now’s the perfect time to clear it out. Sit down together and make it a family project. Ask your kids to pick a few toys, puzzles, or games they’ve outgrown and talk about how much joy they brought—and how wonderful it will feel to pass that joy along. It’s a simple act of empathy that can plant the seeds of gratitude and compassion.

And the timing couldn’t be better. Local thrift and consignment shops rely on donations early in the season to stock their shelves for families searching for affordable, gently used gifts. When you donate in November or early December, you’re not just decluttering—you’re giving another parent a chance to wrap up something special for their child to open on Christmas morning.

WHERE TO DONATE LOCALLY

Fortunately, there are several wonderful places right here in the Lake Norman area that welcome gently used toys and children’s items before Christmas:

• Teri’s Kidz Consignment in Mooresville – This local favorite is known for helping parents find affordable, quality children’s clothing, books, and toys. Donating here helps keep items circulating locally—right where they’re needed most. 500 East Plaza Drive, Mooresville

• Love Our Veterans Thrift Shop in Denver – Every purchase and donation supports programs that assist veterans and their families. From stuffed animals to board games, your gently used items can brighten a child’s day while also helping those who’ve served our country. 209 N. NC-16 Business Hwy, Denver

• Goodwill Stores throughout the Lake Norman area – With multiple drop-off locations, Goodwill makes it easy to give. Your donated toys, books, and children’s clothing help fund job training and community programs while also filling local shelves with affordable treasures. Locations in Mooresville, Cornelius, Denver, and beyond.

Even small donations—one or two toys, a stack of books, a dollhouse missing just one piece— can make a world of difference to a family trying to make ends meet.

THE TRUE SPIRIT OF THE SEASON

We often think of giving as something grand or expensive, but sometimes the most meaningful gestures come from the simplest acts of thoughtfulness. Clearing out toys ahead of Christmas might not seem like much, but to a parent browsing secondhand shelves with hope in their heart, it can mean everything.

This holiday season, before the new gifts arrive and wrapping paper fills the floor, take a moment to make room for something even more magical—the joy of giving. In doing so, you not only create space in your home, but also in your heart. And somewhere nearby, a child will wake up on Christmas morning to a gift that carries not just playtime memories, but the quiet kindness of a stranger.

The Good and the Bad of OPTIMISM BIAS

Humans are wired for hope. From imagining a successful career to believing we’ll ace that big presentation, most of us lean toward optimism. Psychologists call this tendency “optimism bias,” the inclination to overestimate the likelihood of positive events and underestimate the possibility of negative ones. On the surface, it seems harmless— even beneficial—but like most traits, it has both bright and shadow sides.

On the positive end, optimism bias can be a powerful motivator. People who expect favorable outcomes tend to take more risks and persist longer in the face of challenges. For example, an entrepreneur who believes in their business idea is more likely to push through obstacles, network strategically, and innovate, whereas a less optimistic counterpart might give up at the first sign of difficulty. Optimism bias can also bolster mental health. By focusing on potential success rather than failure, individuals experience less stress and greater resilience. This mindset helps people recover more quickly from setbacks and maintain a sense of purpose.

Optimism bias also fosters healthier social relationships. When we project confidence and positivity, we attract others, inspire trust, and encourage collaboration. People naturally gravitate toward individuals who expect the best, which can create a supportive feedback loop—positivity begets more positivity.

However, optimism bias is not without its drawbacks. Overestimating positive outcomes can lead to poor decisionmaking. Investors, for instance, might pour money into risky ventures believing failure is unlikely, only to face significant losses. In personal health, optimism bias may cause individuals to underestimate risks, like assuming they won’t develop chronic conditions despite poor lifestyle habits. Ignoring potential pitfalls can have tangible consequences, ranging from financial strain to emotional setbacks.

Another concern is the effect on accountability. Excessive optimism can blind us to mistakes or warning signs, making it difficult to adjust plans or behaviors effectively. Leaders who consistently

underestimate challenges risk poor team outcomes or organizational failures. Similarly, in relationships, assuming “everything will work out” without communication or effort can lead to misunderstandings and unmet expectations.

Interestingly, optimism bias is often subconscious. Most people aren’t deliberately ignoring risks; they genuinely perceive positive outcomes as more likely. This makes the bias difficult to moderate but also highlights the importance of balance. Awareness is key—recognizing that optimism can inspire action while simultaneously considering realistic risks allows for more informed decision-making.

Ultimately, optimism bias is neither good nor bad—it’s a tool. Used wisely, it motivates, inspires, and fosters resilience. Used carelessly, it can blind, mislead, and disappoint. The trick lies in pairing optimism with strategy: hope for the best, but prepare for the worst. Embracing optimism bias mindfully ensures it remains a force for growth rather than a recipe for unintended consequences.

You Can Only Be You:BUILDING CONFIDENCE AND OVERCOMING IMPOSTER SYNDROME

“Confidence isn’t about having all the answers, it’s about trusting that who you are is already enough.”

~ Joy Nelson Thomas

For most of my life, I’ve tried to balance two truths – wanting to grow into the best version of myself, and learning to be okay with exactly who I already am. That’s where confidence really begins, when we stop trying to be someone else and learn to fully show up as ourselves.

But, if we’re honest, that’s easier said than done. Imposter syndrome has a way of showing up just when we’re stepping into new opportunities or rooms that challenge us. It whispers things like, “You don’t belong here” or “You’re not ready.”

I’ve been there many times.

The truth is that confidence isn’t about never doubting yourself. It’s about choosing to keep showing up anyway. It’s about remembering

that the version of you standing here today has earned her place.

BUILDING CONFIDENCE THAT LASTS

1. Stop comparing your journey.

Someone else’s pace, platform or path has nothing to do with yours. Your story unfolds exactly the way it’s meant to, and it’s beautiful in its own timing.

2. Celebrate your growth.

Confidence grows from steady, small victories – not from a single major event. Every time you speak up, take a risk or learn from a mistake, you’re building strength.

3. Speak kindly to yourself.

If you wouldn’t say it to a friend, don’t say it to yourself. The words you use with yourself matter.

4. Surround yourself with people who remind you who you are.

Confidence grows in community. We all need

those people who see the best in us when we can’t see it ourselves.

The more I lead, the more I realize you can only be you. And, that’s not just enough, it’s the whole point.

You were designed to bring something to the table that no one else can. So, the next time that little voice of doubt tries to make you shrink, remind yourself – you belong here. You’ve worked for this. You are becoming everything you’re meant to be.

Keep showing up. Keep being you.

Because the world needs exactly that.

Take this as your reminder to stand tall in who you are. Reflect on the spaces where you’ve been playing small and step forward with courage. Your confidence doesn’t have to be loud or powerful. Let your authenticity lead, and watch how it inspires others to do the same.

Until next time. Enjoy the journey! Be who God designed you to be.
