Travel-Inspired Beauty

AN INTERVIEW WITH COURTNEY MERCER

When you think of travel, hair might not be the first thing that comes to mind. But to Courtney Mercer at Alkali, her love for traveling is a constant source of inspiration that fuels her passion for her work.

WHAT DREW YOU TO THE BEAUTY INDUSTRY?

I knew I wanted to be a stylist as early as elementary school—I never really wanted to do anything else! I started out doing wedding and prom hair in high school and worked as an intern at a salon during that time, until starting my cosmetology training at the Aveda Institute in Chapel Hill.

WE HEAR YOU LOVE TO TRAVEL. HOW DOES TRAVELING INFLUENCE YOUR WORK AS A STYLIST?

Yes! I love traveling, and I’m fortunate to be able to pair my dedication to continuing education with my love for travel. A pivotal point in my career was being able to train at the Vidal Sassoon Academy of London in the advanced craft hair cutting course.

Since then, I’ve traveled across Europe and Africa. Seeing the fashion and culture of people and places around the world is energizing and inspiring. It’s always exciting to bring that energy and inspiration back with me and applying it to my work, as it benefits everyone who sits in my chair.

HOW DO YOU PERSONALIZE YOUR SERVICES FOR EACH CLIENT?

After 11 years behind the chair, my passion for my work has evolved beyond my craft. I’m equally passionate about providing a personal service to people in our community.

When it comes to personalization, for me, it’s all about collaboration. When guests sit in my chair, I strive to get to know them on a personal level. I work with all my clients to create a shared vision of what service will result in an outcome that represents who they are, and that makes them feel like the best version of themselves. Nothing brings me greater joy than bringing this shared vision to life for my clients.

WHAT’S YOUR ABSOLUTE FAVORITE SERVICE?

That’s such a hard question, as I love all kinds of techniques and services. If I have to choose, I’d say it’s designing soft, ‘lived-in’ color that complements my clients’ unique haircut so that it brings out dimension and really showcases the movement and texture of their hair.

WHAT ARE YOUR TOP TIPS FOR AT-HOME HAIR CARE?

For oil and frizz control, sleep on silk pillow cases. Always use a microfiber towel after shampooing—it helps prevent breakage and frizz, and they’re super absorbent. And of course, always use a heat protectant when styling your hair to keep it healthy and beautiful.

OUTSIDE OF HAIR AND TRAVEL, WHAT DO YOU LIKE TO DO FOR FUN?

I enjoy reading and cooking, and I’m always up for a good hike! I also consider continued education fun and exciting, and take advantage of all the additional training opportunities that come my way.

ANYTHING ELSE YOU’D LIKE YOUR CURRENT AND POTENTIAL CLIENTS TO KNOW?

I value and appreciate all of my existing guests who have followed me through this journey in my career, and am always excited to welcome new guests to my chair!

Are you ready for a stunning signature look and a collaborative stylist experience? Book your appointment with Courtney today!

Happy March!

Not only is this month the start of SPRING, but it’s also Women’s History Month—and the month of our 4th annual Women on the Move conference! (It’s no accident that we host this event in March!)

At Forsyth Woman, our mission has always been to celebrate, empower, and uplift women. We believe in the power of community and connection, and we love bringing this to life— both in our magazine and through our events.

Three Reasons You Can’t Miss our 2025 Women on the Move Conference:

• LOCAL speakers. We’ve all attended events with big-name national keynote speakers— amazing, yes, but sometimes unrelatable. Our goal for Women on the Move is to feature local female speakers—women who are truly part of our community. You might even run into them at the grocery store! How cool is that?!

• Opportunities to connect. Whether you’re an introvert or an extrovert, one thing is true—we all need community. This event is a fantastic way to meet like-minded women who share a growth mindset and support each other.

• FOMO is real! Do you really want to miss out? Of course not! You might regret it when you see all the excitement on social media on March 20th.

So, what are you waiting for? Grab your ticket before they’re gone! Scan the QR code on this page or visit tinyurl.com/FWWOMC25.

Celebrate Women This Month:

• Support Women-Owned Businesses. Shop local and invest in businesses run by women in our community.

• Lift Up the Women Around You. A simple word of encouragement, mentorship, or support can make all the difference.

• Take a Moment for Yourself. Celebrating women includes celebrating you! Prioritize selfcare and acknowledge your own achievements.

March Girls’ Night Out

Our March Girls’ Night Out event is happening on Tuesday, March 11th, at Jeffrey Adams! As always, we’ll have tons of door prizes, and Jeffrey Adams is treating us to amazing drink and appetizer specials. I hope to see you there!

One of my favorite parts of this issue is celebrating the incredible women in our community—including talented local entrepreneurs like my engagement photographer, Megan Smith! She captured such special moments for Gavin and me, along with our two dogs, Buddy and Murphy, who are such a big part of our little family. As I prepare for my May wedding, I’m reminded how important it is to support and uplift the women around us—whether through business, friendship, or simply cheering each other on.

Wishing you a fabulous month of March!

All my best,

A DONATED BADMINTON SET SERVED UP THE DIGITAL SKILLS I NEEDED.

Let Me De-Influence Dry January

During the last week of December for the past few years, I told myself to participate in “Dry January” – no alcohol for the first month of the year. Around January 6th, I tend to gravitate towards a glass of wine rather than sticking with the resolution I set a week before (I hope I’m not alone in this).

This year was different. January 6th rolled by, and I drank water instead of beer. By January 17th, I had ordered off the “mocktail” menu. On February 1st, I had my first drink in 31 days. A successful Dry January was complete.

The question I pondered prior to committing to a month of sobriety and what my friends asked me when I told them I would be the designated driver for the month – why Dry January, and is it worth it?

Let’s start with the why. First, I saw posts about how much better people felt just a few weeks into Dry January on social media. Cleaner, losing weight, better skin, earlier mornings, etc. On top of that, I saw talks of Dry January participants continuing into the months following because they liked the effects of not drinking so much (Free February, Moderate March, Arid April…).

Beyond the positive impact that Dry January was promised to have, I liked the challenge. I wanted to ensure I had the self control to not drink.

NOW, THE BIGGER QUESTION: IS IT WORTH IT?

I hate to be the bearer of bad news or too much of a realist, but Dry January did not turn my skin glass or make me wake up cheerfully with the sunrise. As someone who sometimes drinks during the week but mostly on the

weekends (admittedly a bit too much some weekends), not drinking for one month did not alter the entire trajectory of my health.

In hindsight, it wasn’t fair to change one drastic measure for a finite amount of time and expect so much. Even worse, I don’t think my drinking habits will alter in the coming months. If they do, I struggle to credit Dry January to that lifestyle change.

A more realistic and impactful plan would have been to limit drinking to only on weekends for several months. Rather than no dessert, stopping at one cookie instead of four. Reframing three hours in the gym for one day to an outdoor walk every day during lunch.

If you’re looking to challenge yourself and ensure you’re capable of not drinking for a month, by all means, proceed. Being mindful about the amount and frequency of drinking is something that I will take away from this endeavor. Being able to say “no” when friends and family were drinking and telling me that it was fine to have a glass may have been the most difficult part of the month.

More than anything else, this challenge taught me to celebrate the smaller wins and keep expectations level with the venture. Unrealistic expectations take away from progress. Setting a rigid timeline and goal leaves space for one slipup making the entire month feel like a waste. So, who cares that Dry January didn’t go as planned? Semi-sober summer is just around the corner.

Let me de-influence you from Dry January. You do not have to wait until the New Year to take on a new wellness challenge. A goal with realistic expectations and the potential to create new lifestyle changes will be far more rewarding.

Keeping It Real

WHAT’S YOUR UNFAIR ADVANTAGE?

It was third grade. My tiny self combusted with exhilaration…I made the cheerleading squad!

That launched me into back-toback cheerleading seasons, from elementary to middle school, then high school. I seemed to “fall into” it. I surely wasn’t the best of them. Still, I felt right at home, applauding and praising my team. It felt effortless!

A dilemma developed in high school. Varsity cheerleading issued an ultimatum – choose either cheerleading or marching band. The powers-that-be deemed it impossible to participate in both activities during football season.

Surely this predicament feels juvenile today, but for a 16-yearold, it felt gargantuan. I loved both!

In band since sixth grade, I had never dropped below the top three of all clarinets. In fact, I often earned first chair. Those marching months each autumn taught me much about music and myself. My brother and I were in band together. I made lifelong friends there! What to do?

During this season, I began dating a guy off-and-on who eventually became my husband. To say that he is remarkably gifted in music and songwriting is the ultimate understatement. He said, “You’ll use what you learn in music for the rest of your life. Not so much with cheerleading.” He wasn’t wrong. An examination of the long game seemed to favor marching band.

Yet, the pull towards cheerleading wouldn’t let me go.

It didn’t hurt that our football team won the State Championship every year. Banners hung all over town.

We made headlines every week! But, something bigger than that, bigger than I could understand at the time, lay heavy in this decision.

What did I realize as I got a little further down the road? Cheering people on, encouraging folks to get up and try again…THAT’S what

The One who made me wove into my very DNA! My passion to help people find their truest selves and fullest purpose came straight from the manufacturer…God Himself!

I LOVE helping people get unstuck to run this race with victory in their sights. You could call it my “unfair advantage.” It’s the element of my life that feels natural and normal. I do it without putting forth much energy. It’s just there.

What is your unfair advantage? Yes, you do have one!

What special something about yourself do you take for granted? Truth is, you may not even recognize it because you’re too close to it; but it’s there. God wired you with giftings and graces that don’t come easy to others. You do it without thinking, while they try harder and still miss the mark.

It’s time to bring that gifting out of the closet, dust it off and use it to make a difference! (I promise, if God gave it to you and you use it for His Glory, you WILL make a difference!)

I know people with impressive callings. I’m not them. I know why I’m here, why God positioned me in cheerleading squads all those years. It became training for my life! I was made to cheer people toward the end zone, believing they CAN and WILL get there.

I’m doing that right now with YOU! I’m reminding you that YOU have

something worthwhile to contribute that others around you cannot. If you tuck away your truest self for safe keeping, you’ll miss your purpose AND shortchange those God has placed around you.

I’m not here to impress you, but I AM here to inspire you. Inspire means “to breathe life into.”

Let me breathe HIS life into your worn-down, worn-out self. You’ve been stuck entirely too long. I declare, by God, you won’t stay stuck another day!

It’s time to live bold and bountiful and use all God has given YOU! From there, your life will reverberate with significance! I’m sure of it!

Preparing for a First Meeting with a Financial Advisor Making Dollars, Making $ense

You have a first meeting with a new financial advisor, congrats! You’re taking an essential step in forging a path to financial confidence and clarity. But, this is more than just a casual chat; it’s a critical conversation to determine if this professional is the right fit for you. You’ll need to equip yourself with the right questions, clarify your goals and more.

START WITH CLARITY

Take a moment to consider your financial goals and what motivated you to reach out to an advisor in the first place. Whether it’s building retirement savings or planning for college expenses, having clear objectives will guide the conversation. Remember, it’s normal not to have everything figured out – that’s precisely why you’re seeking professional guidance. That said, get clear on your need for a professional relationship – it’ll typically be one of the first questions the advisor will ask.

CONDUCT A FINRA CHECK

Before meeting with a financial advisor, it’s important to perform due diligence. A crucial part of this is reviewing the BrokerCheck resource with the Financial Industry Regulatory Authority (FINRA). This will reveal their background, experience and if there have been any disciplinary actions against the advisor or their firm. A FINRA check can provide confidence that the advisor is in good standing and has adhered to industry standards and regulations. It’s a simple, but effective step in ensuring the advisor’s credibility and legitimacy.

EXPLORE THEIR DIGITAL FOOTPRINT

In today’s digital age, a financial advisor’s website and online content can be as telling as a face-to-face meeting. Take the time to explore their website, read through any articles they’ve written and watch any videos they’ve produced. This content can give you a sense of their knowledge, expertise and the type of advice they provide. It’s also an opportunity to see if their financial philosophies align with your personal values and goals.

ESTABLISH YOUR CRITERIA

Reflect on the qualities that are most important to you in a financial advisor. Consider their experience, their client communication style or their history of dealing with similar financial situations to yours. Knowing your criteria will help you evaluate whether the advisor is the right fit for your financial needs.

PREPARE QUESTIONS IN ADVANCE

Prepare a list of questions that will help you uncover the advisor’s approach and suitability for your needs. Here are a few questions to consider:

• “What does your typical client look like?”

• “What should I expect in terms of communication and collaboration with you?”

• “Can you share your professional background and experience?”

• “How many clients do you serve, and how personalized are your services?”

• “What is the cost structure for your services?”

• “What planning tools or resources do you use, and will I have access to them?”

• “Who comprises your team, and with whom will I directly work?”

TRUST YOUR INSTINCTS

After the meeting, assess how you feel. Were all your questions answered to your satisfaction? Did the advisor make you feel at ease? Your instincts can be a powerful gauge of whether the advisor is someone with whom you can build a confident relationship.

NO PRESSURE

An ethical financial advisor will understand that choosing an advisor is a significant decision that should not be rushed. Be wary of any advisor who pressures you to make a decision on the spot. A genuine advisor will give you the space and time to consider your options.

By embracing these steps, you’re not only preparing for a meeting but setting the foundation for a long-term partnership that aligns with your financial aspirations and personal values. Here’s to finding an advisor who can help you navigate your financial voyage with confidence.

VintageVintageVentures

A Series Uncovering Vintage Gems In and Around Forsyth County

Shopping local consignment, thrift and vintage stores helps reduce waste, support small business owners and sparks new hobbies among those who get a thrill out of rummaging through pre-owned goods on a Saturday afternoon. With mass consumerism running rampant with the ease of online shopping and next-day delivery options at major retailers, it’s easy to settle for convenience over quality. However, the Triad hosts a handful of locations that provide high quality, pre-owned goods at an affordable price that benefits the environment and local economy. Before checking Amazon or “fast fashion” websites for the media, art or clothing items you need, shop secondhand in Winston-Salem and surrounding areas to keep the environment healthy and local businesses happy. Below are just a few of the fabulous thrift and consignment joints in the area that offer unique, pre-owned products with storefronts that are just as charming.

VINTAGE MARKET DAYS OF PIEDMONT TRIAD

Visit North Carolina released an article in February (visitnc.com/story/ hpVK/antiquing-thrifting-and-vintage-shopping-in-north-carolina) about antiquing, thrifting and vintage shopping in North Carolina, which mentioned Vintage Market Days of Piedmont Triad. Taking place in Greensboro March 28th through March 30th of this year, Vintage Market Days is described as an “upscale vintage-inspired indoor/outdoor market featuring original art, antiques, clothing, jewelry, handmade treasures, home décor, outdoor furnishings, consumable yummies, seasonal plantings and a little more.” Owned by Amanda Benedict, this ever-popular event gives vendors a space to create awareness of their unique gifts by generating crowds from all over North Carolina. It’s even been mentioned in Country Living as one of the “7 Flea Markets and Barn Sales Not To Miss.” Interested in becoming a vendor for Vintage Market Days? The event is accepting applications from vendors of various antique and re-purposed trades. Visit vintagemarketdays.com to learn more about how to show off your skills.

Located at the Greensboro Coliseum Special Events Center (1921 W. Gate City Boulevard, Greensboro, NC 27403), each day of the event brings something different to the table. Friday, March 28th is the Early Buying Event from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., and Saturday, March 29th and Sunday, March 30th are open for general admission from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Purchase affordable tickets for a two or three day event pass online. CHILLY WATER FARM When Quality Matters, Eat

Situated on 325 acres along the beautiful Blue Ridge Mountains, Chilly Water Farm in Sparta, NC has brought to life a dream Sara Davis declared to her parents years ago – to be a farmer!

Sara’s mother, Kim Brown, now joins her daughter in leading and growing this womanowned, full-fledged farming operation and lovingly works to establish a shared ideal scenario of true organic farming.

Originally from the eastern part of North Carolina, the family found themselves residing in Winston-Salem while husband and father Ricky was a BB&T executive. Somewhere along the way, while making WinstonSalem their home, Sara began to seriously pursue her farming goals, spending a year studying organic farming at Maggie’s Farm in Massachusetts.

The dream, along with Kim and Sara’s enthusiasm for delivering the highest quality product, continues to grow and gather loyal customers!

“We had owned houses but never a lot of land,” shares Kim. “We started with a 52-acre Christmas tree farm that turned out to be the perfect location – it was easy for Ricky to travel back and forth to Winston-Salem for work.”

Kim and Sara began selling beef from that location in 2012 – naming it Chilly Water Farm to pay tribute to Sara’s favorite song by Widespread Panic. To start off, they only had smaller Dexter cows.

“Once we realized it took the same energy to raise a small cow as it does larger cows, we began to introduce our Angus,” adds Kim. “Now, we have mostly Angus and just a few Dexter.”

The mother-daughter duo was joined by Kim’s sister, Lynn, in 2014, and all are completely

focused on following the entire organic process, yielding 100% grass-fed cattle – with absolutely no hormones or antibiotics. Their beef is processed at Mays Meats in Taylorsville, NC, a USDAapproved facility in operation for more than 30 years. Chilly Water Farm beef can be found in one restaurant in the Sparta area as well as at a local meat market and one nearby country club.

The beauty of supporting local farmers means you know exactly where your meat and eggs were raised!

“We also have regular WinstonSalem customers, and we currently deliver to WinstonSalem once a month which we’re hoping to expand on,” says Kim. “Customers who are more local to the farm will email their order, and we leave it for them in a cooler. As far as pick-up is concerned, we can do whatever works best for the customer!”

The family owned farm is totally dedicated to delivering the highest quality beef around.

“Every steak cut we have is ground into our steak burgers,” she explains. “Those burgers are amazing for spaghetti, meat loaf, tacos and anything you can think of, especially for grilling – with very, very little grease! We also sell meaty soup bones, short ribs and stew beef when available.”

Around the farm, you’ll also see miniature donkeys and a goat herd that make amazing pets and delight visitors every day, as well as chickens who are living the good life thanks to natural feed, fresh vegetables and fruit snacks. Naturally, they also produce excellent quality eggs!

While you’re here picking up an order and feeling the vibe, grab a Get Chillerized t-shirt from the farm and carry on their “state of peace and harmony with a dash of cool!”

Visit chillywaterfarmllc.com for more information, and email chillywaterfarm@gmail.com for specific pricing on beef and eggs and to schedule a delivery.

ACHIEVING Your Body Contouring, Skin and Hair Goals IN 2025

From the Plastic Surgeons and Aestheticians at Forsyth Plastic Surgery and The VISTA Aesthetic Center

In the beginning of 2025, Forsyth Plastic Surgery and The VISTA (its Aesthetic Center) started advertising “Transformation 2025” – a plan to help women (and men) reach their body, hair and skin goals. Patients could sign up through a simple form on the practice’s homepage.

And, a not-so-surprising thing happened –patients started signing up. Actually, a lot of patients signed up

Dr. Andy Schneider, a board-certified plastic surgeon who has been with Forsyth Plastic Surgery for more than 25 years said, “With Transformation 2025, we wanted to offer patients a way to combine the surgical resources and knowledge of our plastic surgeons with the treatments and skincare products that our aestheticians at The VISTA offer. Patients register, and they have a consultation with a plastic surgeon and one of our aestheticians on the same day. Together, they create a step-by-step game plan, so patients can work towards real results. I think patients can see the benefits of this, so it’s been very successful.”

Dr. Gil Kingman, another board-certified plastic surgeon at the practice, thinks this approach makes a great deal of sense. He says, “A good example might be a patient who comes in to talk about anti-aging treatments for the face and eyes. As a surgeon, I might recommend a Botox treatment and a blepharoplasty for the eyelids. But, I would also recommend the patient work with our aestheticians downstairs and start a new skincare routine with something like Obagi. The patient is going to see better overall results.”

Gina Racca, one of the aestheticians at The VISTA said, “We’ve always been able to refer the patients that we see in our aesthetic center upstairs to our plastic surgeons, but having the Transformation 2025 program makes scheduling and coordinating much easier.”

Dr. George Lawson, another plastic surgeon at the practice says he loves the Transformation 2025 program. “Transformation 2025 really illustrates the importance of choosing a plastic surgery practice that offers both surgical and non-surgical solutions. In our case, we have four board-certified plastic surgeons upstairs and outstanding aestheticians downstairs –along with a team of professional nurses and a

very caring support staff. We can offer patients sound advice and everything they need to reach their hair, skin and body goals.”

Dr. Leslie Branch agrees. “Forsyth Plastic Surgery and The VISTA have been the #1 Cosmetic Surgery Center and the #1 Med Spa for several years. We’re so happy we can offer patients the best aesthetic care in the Triad.”

Aesthetician Kinsley Nix said, “We love getting patients in for Transformation 2025 to talk about hair, skin and body contouring. There’s just so much we can do between our surgical and Med Spa expertise.”

Lynne Brown | Abstract Floral Artist

This month’s featured creator, Lynne Brown, the artist behind Shed Art, brings abstract florals to life with vibrant colors and expressive brushstrokes, transforming each canvas into a joyful surprise. Working from her home studio – fondly known as “the shed” – she creates alongside her husband and fellow painter, Joe Bircher, making art a true family affair.

How would you describe your work?

I create abstract or stylized paintings of floral in acrylic on canvas, combining my love for both floral painting and abstract art.

What influences your art?

I instill creativity in my life by following artists and designers, trends in decor, styling my home or just arranging the flowers from my garden. I’m also inspired by the creativity of others in those related fields and love to visit art museums and galleries. I have learned how important it is to just play when I am painting which ultimately leads to discovery. With this approach, the pressure to create a masterpiece is replaced with the creation of art that is a joyful surprise.

How have you evolved, personally, as an artist?

Educated in design principles and illustration as a career commercial and graphic artist, I was required to visually execute the concepts of managers and clients. Now, I am free to produce work around my own preferences and visions which is very rewarding. Taking classes and workshops from other artists has also helped me develop my process and style.

How do you carve out time to be creative?

I could spend hours in my studio painting, but that isn’t always possible. It’s important for me as an artist to make time to paint, even if it is not as much as I would like. It may mean committing to creating a piece of artwork in the amount of time I have or developing a work in stages.

Do you have a favorite story behind one of your paintings, and why?

A most rewarding and enjoyable commission for me was to paint two large still lifes for my client’s beautiful kitchen. I worked on the two paintings simultaneously to keep the arrangement, balance, palette and style of them very consistent. It was a fun challenge for me, and my client loved them!

What are you working on that excites you right now?

Three medium-sized paintings of mine were selected to be included in an Associated Artist of Winston-Salem Artist Spotlight juried exhibit because of the consistency of my brush strokes across the painting! I am now working on translating the quality of those strokes at a large scale on large canvases.

What is one piece of advice you’d like to share with fellow artists, especially those at the start of their careers?

Look inward to your soul to learn the type of art you long to create. Let that be your north star in your art practice to make art you love. And, find your art tribe, those whose work excites you and those who appreciate your work and encourage you.

If you are interested in learning more about this month’s artist, Lynne Brown, you can find her work online at shedart.ws as well as follow her on Instagram @shedart.ws.

Proven Individualized Care

Embrace New Design: Refreshed & Beautiful

It’s no surprise that many homeowners get the urge to remodel their homes around the holidays. Hosting friends and family often highlights the areas of your home that could use a little refresh. But, tackling a remodel during the busiest and most stressful time of year isn’t ideal. Between holiday commitments and unpredictable winter weather, the process can feel overwhelming. That’s why spring is the most opportune time to start your remodeling journey. With its longer days and warmer weather, spring offers the perfect environment to plan and execute a breathtaking design. Plus, starting now means your updated space will be ready for summer entertaining and will be enjoyed for the rest of the year.

For those considering a remodel, it’s important to plan ahead and factor in timelines. A kitchen remodel typically takes about four months, while a bathroom remodel can be completed in about three months. Starting your project in early spring ensures it’s ready in time for your summer gatherings, whether you’re showing off a gorgeous new kitchen or unwinding in a luxurious spa-like bathroom. By acting now, you also avoid the rush of contractors’ busy schedules in the summer months. So, why wait? Spring is the season of renewal –embrace it by creating a refreshed and beautiful space you’ll love for years to come!

Our portfolio of projects is listed on our website, junedelugasinteriors.com, under the “projects” tab at the top. You can see some of our projects from the past 10 years; how the styles and design trends have changed over the years. The first step is picking up your phone and making an appointment. We look forward to discussing your dream remodel with you.

God Bless,

PEOPLE OF PROMINENCE SERIES

Jake Easter

“Everyone in their life has his own particular way of expressing life’s purpose –the lawyer his eloquence, the painter his palette and the man of letters his pen from which the quick words of his story flow. I have my bicycle.“

~Gino Bartali

Spring is upon us. The outdoor activities at our fingertips are abundant. Cycling is a profoundly important element to the recreational fabric of the Winston-Salem scene. There are profoundly passionate members of our community telling the exhilarating story of cycling and all it encompasses.

Jake Easter is just such an eloquent proponent of the cycling world locally and answers our questions for this month’s edition.

TELL US WHERE YOU GREW UP AND HOW YOUR CHILDHOOD INFORMS WHAT YOU DO NOW.

I was born and raised in Winston-Salem. My family moved to Pfafftown when I was nine, so most of my memories are there. They live on 28 acres, where all of the neighbors have large plots and everything is really spread out. We had tons of bike trails and built more every chance we got. As a kid, my bicycle was my way to get around, to go see my friends. At 13 years old, I started racing BMX; not long after that I started riding freestyle and dirt jumps. Around 16, I started racing mountain bikes and, while I have stopped racing, I haven’t stopped riding mountain bikes ever since.

WHAT MAKES BIKING SUCH A GREAT ENDEAVOR FOR PEOPLE OF ALL AGES?

Bikes are so adaptable. They can just as easily bring your groceries home from the store as they can take you on challenging trails to places most can only dream of going. They can be designed for kids just as easily as adults. They can be electric-assist and adaptive for special needs.

But, I think the main reason I love them is because they can unleash adventure without a huge investment.

WHAT WOULD BE YOUR OWN PERSONAL MISSION STATEMENT?

My mission is to use my creativity to tackle challenges and create things that bring joy and add value to people’s lives.

WHAT SHOULD OUR READERSHIP KNOW PARTICULARLY ABOUT THE BICYCLE “SCENE” LOCALLY?

The bicycle scene is changing at an accelerating pace. I remember a time when cycling in Winston-Salem was largely unapproachable by average people. It was loaded down with spandex and Pelotons. It produced some national and international talent on the race scene but didn’t offer much in the way of social rides or events. Cycling in WinstonSalem is more accessible now than it has ever been and continues to evolve as Winston-Salem grows.

TELL US ABOUT YOUR RICKSHAW BUSINESS.

I worked for a rickshaw company in Raleigh while I lived there, so when I stumbled on one for sale locally, I bought it. I used to use it to make extra money when there were big events and took it to events like Carolina Panthers games.

After selling one of my businesses in 2022 and things opening back up post COVID, the rickshaw was calling my name. It was pretty rundown from sitting for two years, so I refurbished everything and started giving rides and tours in January 2023. It went so well that I decided to buy two more. I now have two rickshaws running and a third in the works. We’re out every Friday and Saturday night to taxi people around and do tours during the week by appointment. The business is called Sparky’s Rickshaw Company.

WHAT EXACTLY SHOULD EVERYONE KNOW ABOUT BEERSNGEARS?

BeersNGears was built to serve the cycling community. We have been able to foster an amazing culture around cycling and camaraderie.

Our method is hosting fun, noncompetitive events that are usually free or very little cost. We encourage all types of riders to come have fun with us.

They range from our weekly no-drop Monday night ride from Fiddlin’ Fish Brewery open to people of all skill levels to more rambunctious multi-day bikepacking trips that include carrying your camping gear and roughing it for 80+ miles of gravel and off-road trails through the mountains.

We also host a monthly “Open Bike Night” where people can learn how to work on their bikes with our shop tools and equipment. We also incorporate things like a chili cook-off and trick-or-treating into our rides.

And, if that’s not enough, we organize the annual “Wiener Ride” with three to five stops at different hot dog spots. If hot dogs aren’t your thing, you can ride with us on the Latin-flavored version called “Tour de Taco.” We also do a Holiday Lights Ride for Christmas and an annual Halloween-themed bike festival.

WHAT CAN WE EXPECT FROM YOU AND THE CYCLING COMMUNITY INTHE FUTURE?

A lot of focus is being directed towards mountain biking trails at the moment.

The trail building agreement between the city and Forsyth Off Road Bicycle Association has made major headway in the last couple of years and seems to be expanding exponentially.

In the span of two years, we’ve gone from only being allowed to use basic hand tools to using excavators and skid steers, and running projects like a construction company. We went from only being allowed to maintain the current trails to planning about three miles of new trail with city approval. In 2024, we completed about half a mile of new trail (the first sanctioned trail build in more than 20 years) and made progress on another two miles.

HOW CAN PEOPLE GET INVOLVED IN ANY OF YOUR PURSUITS?

We have websites for everything (beersngears.com, sparkysrickshaw.com, forbaws.com), but to stay upto-date, use our social media (@officialbeersngears, @sparkysrickshaw, @forba_mtb).

Mind the Gap

Taking Time Off After Graduation

Spring semester senior year of college is a whirlwind of emotions – confusing, overwhelming, exciting, liberating...maybe all of the above. Stepping into the “real world” presents countless paths – apply for 100s of entry level jobs and perhaps receive an offer, enroll in a masters program, get an internship, join the military, volunteer, babysit, etc. Everything is daunting, and sometimes it feels like nothing is tempting.

On top of that, there is the impending doom of not having a plan after graduation at all. Deciding to move back home and feel eerily similar to high school. Yikes.

As the voice for 20-something-women, Taylor Swift once said, “how can a person know everything at 18 and nothing at 22?” Most are eager for the leap away from familiarity as a freshman, only to crave being tucked into our childhood bed once the college bubble bursts.

Well, you’re not alone. Everyone (and I mean everyone), no matter how together they may seem, still feels uneasy at such a big adjustment. Allow yourself grace, time and compassion when it starts to feel like no one is even reading the job applications you’re sending out.

TAKING TIME OFF

Something I implore those who are in limbo of stages of life, is to consider taking a gap year or fraction of time between college graduation and the next step.

After I graduated in 2023, I taught English abroad. With that opportunity, I supported myself traveling overseas. There were a lot of reasons why I decided to take a gap year, but the biggest was that I did not feel like I would put my best foot forward in the next stage of life.

If I was lucky enough to even get a job when I graduated, I would not be the best employee I could be. I was drained and unmotivated after finishing school.

If I enrolled in a masters program, my true reason for that is not to further my education but, instead, delay reality a little bit longer. I was more unsure than ever, since every idea felt less tempting than the next.

CHIN UP, MIND OPEN

Everyone has their own path. Some land incredible positions right after they graduate, and some move home and save money (after I started budgeting my first salary, the latter feels like a wise choice, but

that’s for a different article). The point is to be open to every opportunity. If taking time off is what you need in the long run, trust your gut. I can personally guarantee the trajectory of your career is not ruined because you take well-deserved time to explore other opportunities. What matters is feeling certain you made the right call.

So, move to the mountains and run a ski lift for the winter until you’re ready for reality. Volunteer with that project you’ve always felt passionate about. Be ambitious and take the chance that feels right. Joining the workforce at 23 instead of 22 will not ruin your life, but taking a job that you can’t be your best self for could certainly negatively impact you in the long run.

There is no right choice, just the choice for you. Explore options, have an open mind and keep your head up. It’s no easier being 22 than 18 – I can’t speak about turning 30, but I heard there’s a whole new set of hurdles to navigate. Let’s just worry about graduating for now.

Would you like to be happier, sleep better, strengthen your immune system and bring more positivity into your work and life? If you answered “yes” to any of these, practicing gratitude might be the simple yet powerful game changer for which you’ve been looking. Research has tied gratitude to all these benefits and more!

There is so much adversity, negativity and uncertainty in the world. It just takes a scroll through social media or a glance at the day’s headlines to launch us into a negative spiral. But, amid the chaos, we all have reasons to be thankful. The truth is, most of us are more fortunate than we realize – especially when we consider the challenges faced by others around the globe.

WHAT IS GRATITUDE?

Gratitude is the expression of appreciation for the good in our lives. It’s about recognizing and valuing the blessings we receive – both big and small. There are two key components of practicing gratitude:

• Affirming the good things we’ve received.

• Acknowledging the people or circumstances that contributed to these blessings.

WHY GRATITUDE MATTERS

You have probably noticed that we, as humans, tend to go negative – a phenomenon known as the Negativity Bias. This survival instinct, rooted in our fight or flight response, keeps us alert to potential threats but can also lead to stress and unhappiness.

Gratitude serves as an antidote, helping to rewire our brains and create a more relaxed body state. In addition, gratitude has tons of additional benefits as mentioned above.

FIVE SIMPLE WAYS TO PRACTICE

GRATITUDE

Here are my five favorite ways to incorporate gratitude into your daily routine:

The Game Changer

1

SAY IT OUT LOUD

Vocalizing what you’re grateful for can have a powerful impact. Hearing yourself express gratitude helps solidify those feelings and connects you more deeply to what you value. Use a voice memo app to record your thoughts and revisit these recordings whenever you need a boost.

2

WRITE DOWN ALL FOR WHICH YOU ARE GRATEFUL

Keeping a daily or weekly journal where you record what you’re grateful for is a great strategy for building a gratitude habit. Start by writing down three things you’re grateful for each day, or adjust the frequency to do what works for you.

You can also consider a Gratitude Jar, adding a slip of paper each week to reflect on moments of gratitude. At the end of the month or year, revisit these notes to relive these blessings.

3

SHARE GRATITUDE WITH OTHERS

Make a conscious effort to express gratitude to the people around you. Send a thoughtful text, write a note of appreciation, give a “thank you” gift or simply thank the cashier at the grocery store.

4 5

PRACTICE GRATITUDE WALKS

Go for a walk and notice the beauty of nature around you. Acknowledge and appreciate the trees, the warmth of the sun or the sound of birds.

GIVE BACK

Helping others fosters a sense of gratitude. Volunteer your time, donate to a cause you believe in or perform small acts of kindness to experience the joy that comes from giving.

Ready to give it a try? The game changer you’ve been waiting for is a moment of gratitude away.

Pat’s Body Shop & Towing

CELEBRATING WELL-DESERVED WINS

Anyone who knows Sandra Scarlette well is aware she thoroughly enjoys a good challenge!

So much so that, through the years, those challenges have defined the passionate person she is today – who happens to also be known for two major milestones! Pat’s Body Shop recently celebrated 60 years of serving the Winston-Salem area and is also recognized as the largest single-woman owned body shop in the United States!

While that’s a healthy dose of much-deserved fanfare, it’s the daily interactions with her team and customers that inspire this powerhouse of a business owner to keep growing strong.

“Years ago, in the 70s and 80s, some male customers didn’t even want a woman writing estimates for them,” shares Sandra. “Today, I would have to say towing has been our biggest obstacle, as it was really a ‘good old boy’s game” for so long. Also, getting the paint shop up and running took three years – but I fought hard for both of those!”

Now, you can count on Pat’s for 24/7 towing needs!

Sandra’s brother, Pat, started the business back in 1964 – where he taught her to love and respect the industry – and she bought Pat’s Body Shop from him in 1997. Pat passed away in 2005, but carrying on his legacy and passing his industry expertise down to her staff continues to be Sandra’s mission. While he was greatly missed at last year’s ribbon cutting and 60 year celebration, Sandra feels he would be amazed at how far she has brought his vision. Inspiring other female business owners of all ages, she’s overcoming obstacles with faith, determination and letting her team’s quality work speak for itself.

As the woman in charge, you might think Sandra has developed a trusted management style to keep her team in line, but she’ll laugh and tell you it’s mostly a “fear factor” that keeps them straight on a daily basis! Maybe so, but that loyal team also knows Sandra is already dreaming of the next project, and their support never waivers. There’s never a dull moment around both businesses, and

that sense of camaraderie and family closeness can’t help but spread among the 30-ish employees.

Scarlette’s Performance is right next door, and a new paint shop opened last July, all within walking distance. Both Scarlette’s Performance and Pat’s Body Shop oversee a large volume of cars –continuing to grow as customers appreciate their attention to detail and dedication to exceptional service. That includes collision repair, interior work, mechanical work, custom painting and restoration work – plus, Scarlette’s Performance is your resource for all performance parts, while showcasing Sandra’s personal passion for drag racing. She’s also well known in the area for her custom car collection.

In her spare time – and it’s a mystery when that might be – Sandra is also an award-winning bodybuilder, recently coming out of a 20-year retirement from the sport to compete again. That competitive streak trickles down to her team as well, and you might find a few weights being lifted around the shop. There’s also more than enough time in the schedule to give back.

“I’m proud of the obstacles I’ve overcome – and even more proud to support the community that supported me,” she adds. Feeling blessed with their own incredible team, Scarlette’s Performance sponsored the 2022, 2023 and 2024 versions of the Shriners Drag Racing & Hot Rod Expo, benefitting Shriners Hospitals for Children. The business is also an avid supporter of a variety of kids’ sports leagues in the area, as well as offering sponsorships for racers at both Farmington Dragway and Piedmont Dragway.

As a woman in management and ownership in a previously maledominated arena, the road has been filled with challenges. But, Sandra will tell you that’s what she loves most!

Email Marketing Uncomplicated: Building Better Connections with Ease

Email marketing is one of those tasks in business where you either love it or you hate it. If you fall into the latter group, before you run for the hills to avoid sending another email to your list, let’s change the narrative around email marketing.

Sure, you’ve allowed perfectionism to hold you back with the pressure to create overly designed templates that rival the mass market businesses you see in your inbox each week. Yes, you’ll never get back the hours you’ve spent overthinking every single word staring back at you from across the screen.

Where most business owners go wrong is forgetting that fancy templates and perfect copy were never meant to be the focus of their emails.

This year, concentrate on creating connections as the core of every email you send and you can’t go wrong.

CAN EMAIL MARKETING REALLY BE MADE SIMPLE?

When your customers open their inbox and read an email from your brand, the last thing you want is for it to feel like the equivalent of walking to their mailbox only to find junk mail. When you plan out your content this year, keep the goal to make your emails feel personal to everyone who opens it. The same way many businesses show up on social media with the focus being to provide value and build connection, email should do the same!

ASK YOURSELF, “WHAT DO I WANT TO SAY TO MY AUDIENCE?”

The truth is, when you sit down to create an email based on that feeling of “should,” you’re not creating real connection, you’re

simply marking off a task. Lean into what you want to have actual conversations around in your business and the things that bring you joy, share your interests and expertise, and open the door for your reader to feel more personally connected.

Being More Intentional in Life and Work

For the last few years, I’ve embraced setting an intention for the year rather than setting New Year’s Resolutions (which we all know tend to fizzle out). The good news? It’s March, and I’m still focusing on my intention where most New Year’s Resolutions have long been forgotten.

Setting intentions involves focusing on your overall direction rather than specific outcomes. In today’s fastpaced world, it’s easy to get swept up in routines and reactive behaviors that leave us feeling unfulfilled. Being intentional means making deliberate choices about how we spend our time, energy and resources to align with our values and goals.

Interestingly, my intention is to be more intentional. For me, this means being purposeful in my words, actions and daily decisions. In the past, there were times when I felt like life was just happening to me, rather than me steering the ship.

The foundation of intentional living involves clarifying your purpose. To live with purpose, you need to define what truly matters to you. Ask yourself:

• What matters most to me?

• What kind of person do I want to be?

• What legacy do I want to leave behind?

Tools like journaling, vision boards or coaching can help articulate your vision. I’m not very artistic, so I created a Vision Board on Canva as a daily reminder of what’s most important.

Here’s how I am cultivating intentionality in 2025:

SETTING PRIORITIES

I’m focusing on what has the greatest impact and aligns with my purpose and values. Staying true to these priorities means saying “no” to things that don’t serve them.

BEING DELIBERATE ABOUT HOW I SPEND MY TIME

It is easy to get sucked into activities that don’t add much value to your life – social media and Netflix are a few of my personal pitfalls. I’m working to replace these with high-value activities and surround myself with positive, uplifting people.

PAYING ATTENTION TO WHAT I EAT AND DRINK

As I’ve gotten older, my willpower has waned – and my pants don’t lie! I’m focusing on eating whole foods that fuel my body and cutting down on alcohol. While I do love my wine, I’m saving it for special occasions.

GETTING ORGANIZED

Clutter – whether physical or digital – creates stress and wastes time. I’ve been on a mission to unsubscribe from unnecessary emails and organize my files to make my surroundings more streamlined and efficient.

FOCUSING ON FEWER, MORE MEANINGFUL CONNECTIONS

As a business owner, I spend a lot of time networking. I’m committing to fewer, more intentional networking groups and activities to maximize the value without spreading myself too thin.

LETTING GO AND LETTING GOD

The most important step in my journey is reminding myself that I am ultimately not in control – God is. Instead of trying to control people and circumstances, I’m leaning on Him for guidance through prayer and spending time in His Word.

Setting Healthy Boundaries

In a world that often expects women to be accommodating, nurturing and endlessly available, establishing healthy boundaries can feel challenging. However, learning how to set and reinforce boundaries is crucial for maintaining emotional well being and fostering healthier relationships. In this article, we’ll explore what boundaries are, why they matter and practical strategies for saying “no” without guilt.

UNDERSTANDING BOUNDARIES

Boundaries are the limits we set for ourselves in relationships with others. They define what we find acceptable and unacceptable in terms of behavior and treatment. Establishing boundaries is essential for personal autonomy and self respect, allowing us to create space for our needs, feelings and desires.

TYPES OF BOUNDARIES

Physical Boundaries: Involve personal space and physical touch.

Emotional Boundaries: Concern your feelings and how much you share with others.

Time Boundaries: Relate to how you allocate your time and energy.

Material Boundaries: Involve your possessions and resources.

Intellectual Boundaries: Concern differing opinions and ideas.

WHY SETTING BOUNDARIES IS IMPORTANT

Promotes Self Care: Setting boundaries allows you to prioritize your own needs and well being which is essential for mental health.

Enhances Relationships: Clear boundaries foster mutual respect in relationships, reducing misunderstandings and resentments.

Boosts Confidence: As you learn to assert your boundaries, your self esteem grows, leading to more fulfilling interactions and a greater sense of control over your life.

Prevents Burnout: By learning to say “no” to excessive demands, you can prevent exhaustion and maintain balance in both your personal and professional life.

HOW TO SET HEALTHY BOUNDARIES

Identify Your Needs: Reflect on what makes you comfortable or uncomfortable. Consider areas in your life where you feel overwhelmed or drained and think about what changes you would like to make.

Communicate Clearly: Once you have identified your boundaries, express them clearly and calmly. Use “I” statements to articulate your feelings, such as “I need time to myself after work” rather than phrasing it as a demand.

Stay Firm But Compassionate: When someone crosses your boundaries, remind them kindly but firmly of your limits. For instance, you might say, “I appreciate your concern, but I need to handle this on my own.”

Practice Consistency: Reinforce your boundaries by consistently adhering to them. This not only shows others that you are serious but also helps you internalize your own limits.

Be Prepared for Resistance: Not everyone will react positively when you set boundaries. They may be accustomed to you being available and may react negatively. Stay resolute and remember that it’s okay for others to feel discomfort when you change the dynamics of a relationship.

THE ART OF SAYING “NO”

Saying “no” can be one of the most difficult aspects of setting boundaries, especially for women who have been socialized to be agreeable. Here are some strategies to help you say “no” gracefully:

Keep It Simple: A straightforward response is often the best. You don’t need to over explain or justify your decision. A simple “no, I can’t” is sufficient.

Use Positive Language: Frame your refusal positively. Instead of saying, “I can’t help you with that,” you could say, “I would love to help, but I have other commitments that require my attention right now.”

Offer Alternatives (if appropriate): If you wish, suggest an alternative solution. For example, “I can’t meet this weekend, but I’m available next week.”

Practice Makes Perfect: If saying “no” feels uncomfortable, practice with a trusted friend or in front of a mirror until it feels more natural.

Reinforce Your Decision: If someone pressures you after you’ve said “no,” reiterate your boundary. You can say, “I understand you might be disappointed, but my decision remains the same.”

Setting healthy boundaries and learning to say “no” are vital skills that can enhance your personal and professional life. Remember that boundaries are not walls; they are a means of fostering safety, respect and understanding in your relationships.

By prioritizing your own well being, you empower yourself and encourage others to respect your limits. Embrace the journey of boundary setting, knowing that it is an act of self love and a necessary step toward living a balanced and fulfilling life.

GOODWILL INDUSTRIES OF NORTHWEST NC Relationships That Transform Lives

Relationships that truly make a difference are the building blocks that have molded the success of Goodwill Industries of Northwest NC.

Ask Chief Organizational Development & Mission Advancement Officer Sherry Carpenter what drives that Goodwill objective, and she’ll proudly say the entire organization is totally committed to their longstanding mission.

“We are entirely focused on providing equitable access and upward mobility for the people we serve, our team members and the communities throughout our 31-county territory,” Sherry explains.

After nearly 100 years in existence, Goodwill boasts 51 store locations and career services through 28 service locations in those 31 counties, all across northwest North Carolina.

Sherry began her path with Goodwill as a career coach for persons with disabilities, followed by advancement into leadership roles including Vice President of Workforce/ Mission Services and a Chief Officer role. A graduate of Goodwill’s Executive Leadership Program as well as the 2020 class of Leadership Winston-Salem, Sherry holds a bachelor’s degree in psychology from Virginia Tech and a master’s degree in organizational psychology from Appalachian State University.

With a nod to March as National Women’s History Month, she reveals what trends are now most prevalent among women in the workforce. “Millions of women left the workforce during the pandemic, especially those with school-aged children. But that has rebounded,” Sherry explains. “Women are still the dominant workforce in healthcare and hospitality, but they’re also pursuing traditionally male fields – which usually pay higher wages – including IT, distribution and logistics, and CDL (truck driving).”

Based on what she observes from Goodwill’s female program participants, Sherry offers these words of wisdom:

• Starting at any age or stage of your career, make an effort to intentionally build your network. High school and college aren’t too soon to start – and your professional network is especially important as you explore entry level jobs.

• Fight the best battles! While we all hope to cure the issues of the world, we can’t fix everything. Focus on the areas within yourself you are truly passionate about.

• Believe in others and support their progress. Sherry says one of the most important comments she hears in the impact stories from Goodwill participants is: “Someone at Goodwill believed in me and thought I could achieve my goals.”

• Look for opportunities, even if you’re not looking for a job. Show others you’re always ready and willing to learn.

• Be authentic. While, as women, we often have to “wear our professionalism well,” we can still show we’re human with feelings and passionate personalities. Realize your unique life experiences are important to the growth of your organization.

Goodwill’s primary mission programs include career services, job skill training and educational attainment, plus specialized programs for veterans, youth and persons with disabilities. Goodwill’s Outreach Scholarship Fund also provides assistance to eligible participants for job skill education classes. Crosby Scholars is an affiliate organization of Goodwill, and they partner with, as well as provide services under, the NCWorks system.

As a mission-based organization, Goodwill leads as a trusted partner in the national Mobility Action Learning Network/Urban Institute to advance the work of local programs to boost upward mobility. Since January of 2024, local organizations collaborating have included the Asset-Building Coalition of Forsyth County, Forsyth County DSS, Forsyth Technical Community College, Piedmont Triad Regional Workforce Development Board and Winston-Salem State University. Many of Goodwill’s training and education programs are in partnership with Forsyth Tech and 11 other community colleges in our region.

“Goodwill’s leadership revolves around removing barriers that inhibit upward economic mobility,” Sherry explains. “Think of these barriers as community wide problems that affect people on an individual level but that individuals can’t fix alone. Transportation and housing issues affect workers across the board. The availability of childcare is also a major barrier to employment in our region. Despite the services that support agencies provide, even if people qualify for government assistance, they often can’t find daycares with openings, due to a provider shortage.”

“People want to support their families and provide a better life for their children,” says Sherry. “When they can’t, it creates enormous stress on the family and often causes disruption when moving to more affordable housing is unavoidable “Most people want to work, and having increased flexibility in schedules and benefits is crucial for local employers to offer.”

PARTICIPANT PROFILE – JELESIA GRIFFIN

Jelesia was one of the first students to complete the Distribution & Logistics skills training program, which launched last spring as a partnership between Goodwill, Forsyth Tech and Second Harvest Food Bank of Northwest North Carolina.

Like many justice-involved individuals, Jelesia’s background made it tough to find a job or housing. After being hospitalized and homeless for two months, she was living at the Bethesda Center. There were some housing options, but she couldn’t qualify for them without a job.

Jelesia enrolled in Goodwill’s EDGE program, which provides short term placement at Goodwill Retail Stores to help individuals build their work history. She learned about the Distribution & Logistics training and earned a Goodwill Outreach Scholarship to help pay for training. Her retail supervisor arranged her work schedule around her class time, and Goodwill was also able to assist with Jelesia’s down payment for housing.

An outstanding student and intern, Second Harvest hired Jelesia full time in the warehouse and logistics department, which allowed her to attain reliable housing and put her on the path to financial stability. She is a shining example of how educational institutions and nonprofit agencies can partner to meet the needs of individuals looking for long term, stable employment and financial security.

Chief Communications & Public Affairs Officer Ginger Salt echoes the Goodwill motto is simple, but sincere: “The Good We Do is Because of You!”

MARCH MADNESS:

Basketball, Brackets and Unpredictability

Every year, as winter melts away and the first signs of spring start to emerge, one thing remains constant in the United States – March Madness. No, it’s not a nationwide outbreak of insanity (though it sometimes feels that way); it’s the NCAA Division I Men’s Basketball Tournament, a three-week extravaganza that captivates the country, defies logic and produces as many high-flying dunks as it does headaches for anyone trying to fill out a perfect bracket.

The Madness kicks off in mid-March and quickly spirals into chaos, with 68 college basketball teams battling it out in a single-elimination tournament. The tournament’s format, with games played across various cities and culminated by a climactic Final Four, is a spectacle of sport, tradition and drama. However, if you’re looking for a clearcut favorite to win, prepare to be disappointed. The unpredictability of March Madness is what makes it, well, madness.

BRACKETS: WHERE LOGIC GOES TO DIE

One of the most enduring traditions of March Madness is the bracket challenge. Fans – both casual and die-hard – fill out their predictions for the entire tournament, from the first round all the way through the championship game. The goal? To correctly guess which teams will advance and ultimately win. Simple, right? If only it were that easy.

March Madness is famous for its upsets, where lowerseeded teams (also known as “Cinderella” teams) take down heavy favorites. The odds of selecting a perfect bracket are so astronomically low that they’re practically nonexistent. So, when your cousin Dave, who hasn’t watched a single game all season, picks the team with the coolest mascot to go all the way, don’t be too surprised when his bracket performs better than yours.

One of the great joys of March Madness is witnessing the “Cinderella story.” Every year, a team that was overlooked or dismissed by the experts rises from obscurity to take down top-ranked opponents. These surprise underdogs are the ones that turn the tournament into a spectacle of the improbable. Just ask George Mason University in 2006 or Florida Gulf Coast University in 2013 when they became household names, not because they were expected to win, but because they shocked the basketball world.

THE MADNESS BEHIND THE MADNESS

So, why is it called “March Madness?” Well, the term was originally coined in 1939 by an Illinois high school basketball official named Henry V. Porter, but it wasn’t until the 1980s that it became synonymous with the NCAA tournament. As TV broadcasts grew in popularity, more and more fans began tuning in to watch the drama unfold – complete with buzzer beaters, crazy upsets and teams advancing against all odds.

And, while most of the country is glued to their TVs, businesses also see a massive uptick in productivity losses. March Madness is so all consuming that millions of people end up “sick” for work, pretending to have the flu as they stay home to watch their team’s improbable run to the Sweet 16. It’s a phenomenon known as “office pool fever,” and it’s as contagious as any virus.

THE FINAL SHOT

In the end, March Madness isn’t just about basketball; it’s about community, camaraderie and chaos. It’s a time when casual fans can get as invested as lifelong followers, where every game feels like the most important thing in the world and where bracket-busting upsets bring people together in a shared experience of delightful frustration. Whether you’re a basketball fanatic or someone who couldn’t care less about sports, March Madness is a wild ride that’s impossible to ignore.

And, who knows? Maybe this year, the unthinkable will happen – and your bracket will finally be the one to break the curse of perfection. But, probably not.

As women, we have dreaded the day our poor eating habits catch up with us as far back as middle school – or even earlier, if you were unfortunate enough to be body-conscious in elementary school.

Older women around us complained about not being able to get away with eating that extra slice of chocolate cake like they could at 17. In fact, many young women gain the stereotypical “freshman 15” at just 18 or 19 years old with tasty college cafeteria food and latenight pizza to soothe the growing pains of transitioning into adulthood with no parental supervision.

It’s common knowledge that all bodies and genetics differ. Sometimes, depending on factors outside of our immediate control such as medical conditions and hormonal fluctuations, it can be more difficult for some to control or maintain a healthy weight while others seemingly shed pounds at the drop of a hat. Age, however, is something none of us can outrun – no matter how genetically gifted we are.

What About Our Weight? Aging Out

How do we ensure that we maintain muscle mass and a healthy percentage of body fat as the increasing demands of marriage, careers, children, health issues and financial concerns plague our 30s? Here are two superpowers we can harness in order to stay fit and mobile as the years pass.

GO TO SLEEP

Bedtimes aren’t such a bad idea after all. If you’re not getting a healthy seven to nine hours of quality sleep per night, you might be setting your brain up to betray you. According to a 2024 article on WebMD, skimping on sleep creates a spike in cortisol, the stress hormone, which primes your body to conserve fuel, leading to a tendency to retain fat storage. Additionally, poor sleep negatively affects your body’s ability to process insulin, making your body even more likely to store fat.

Establishing a consistent sleep schedule, avoiding heavy meals and caffeinated beverages for a few hours before bed and eliminating bright lights, screen time and unnecessary noise can

assist in improving sleepless nights. Some find using supplements such as melatonin to be helpful, while unwinding with a hot bath or calming aroma therapy may do the trick for others.

FOCUS ON RESISTANCE TRAINING

Any exercise is better than nothing. Taking a brisk 30-minute walk in the mornings or during lunch breaks can do the body a world of good, but it is important not to overlook the importance of incorporating weights into your workout. Regular cardiovascular activity has a surplus of benefits, such as reducing the risk of heart disease and improving mental health to name a few, however, many women are still hesitant to hit the weights section at the gym.

Did you know that it is easier for the body to burn fat when it has more muscle mass? A Medical News Today article explains, “While cardio primarily burns calories during the activity, strength training boosts metabolism. This leads

to an increase in calorie burn even during rest, also known as basal metabolic rate. Integrating both forms of exercise can maximize weight loss efforts.” The article also lists the benefits of strength training, including increased mobility, strength and endurance, stronger bones (reducing the risk of osteoporosis) and moodboosting properties. In our 20s and 30s, it is important to build and maintain as much muscle mass as possible, as it only decreases with age.

Don’t panic just yet. Weight training doesn’t have to look like power lifting or body building. Interval training that incorporates higher repetitions of lower weighted movements can be a great way to integrate cardiovascular activity and weight training all at once, minimizing your time spent sweating for those with busy schedules. Want even more of a challenge? Join a CrossFit gym or group exercise class to meet other like-minded people and expand your social circle while staying in shape.

Trying New Things: HOT YOGA

Wake up, breakfast, school, practice, homework, dinner, sleep, repeat. For years, practice was volleyball, basketball, track, flag football, softball, tennis, soccer or any sport my parents would drive me to. Exercise was implemented into daily routine without realizing it.

In college, finding a consistent routine was more challenging – why work out when I could go to a party? As a working professional, it’s even more of a hassle to get up and go to the gym. Why run when I need extra sleep so much more?

So, I began a journey to flip the script. I want to find activities so fun they don’t feel like exercise. Something to look forward to – not an obligation to fill Apple Watch rings or post on Strava

Without further ado, let’s begin the “trying new things” series with what prompted this journey – hot yoga.

WHAT IS IT?

Hot yoga is similar in principle to the traditional practice of combining meditation with movement. The poses and flows are just done in a heated room, so it requires more exertion.

There’s value in the serenity and mind-body connection that comes with yoga, but in the past, yoga classes did not make me feel like I really worked out. I cannot say the same about hot yoga. The classes range from 90oF - 105oF with varying levels of difficulty. Sometimes I’m leaving toasty, and others, I may as well have jumped in a pool (no, I’m not exaggerating)!

Often, there are options for calmer classes, more intensive flows or strengthening sessions involving weights. Different instructors at one studio may provide a more tailored approach to what you want to get out of the experience, so it’s worth trying a few classes.

BEGINNER FRIENDLY?

A cautionary yes. The beautiful thing about yoga is that there is no pressure to do exactly what the instructor says. Modify poses, take a drink of water and a breath when you need it. There’s no shame in a quick child’s pose before jumping back in.

The biggest adaptation I had to make that helped me feel significantly more comfortable is drinking water before feeling thirsty. Getting ahead of the curve and constantly having sips of water during class and the hours leading up helped immensely.

INSIGHT & IMPRESSION

I absolutely love hot yoga now and try to go three times per week. What has made me commit to the membership (ranging from around $70-$150 per month) is the addictive feeling I get when I go consistently. I look forward to it – it’s difficult, rewarding and I get in a good workout without touching the dreaded treadmill. I have even started to notice a tightness in my muscles when I don’t go. Plus, someone mentioned my arms are looking toned. Bonus!

A big step for me was to lose the competitive edge I have always had. Understanding that some days I’ll need more rest and other days I can push harder. On days when it is harder, understanding that no one around me is watching what I am doing. I certainly am not judging my neighbor about his or her “warrior three.” Focusing on what I can do to be better rather than everyone else around me has given me a level of independence that I didn’t know I needed to gain.

A completely unforeseen benefit is an ability to actively listen. Initially, I found it challenging to flow through unfamiliar positions at the pace the

instructor is cuing, but becoming familiar with the movements allows me to really listen to the instructor.

I am embarrassed to admit this, but I have always been a chronic mouth-breather. Ujjayi (ooh-JAI-yee) is a strategy to regulate breathing. This involves breathing in through the nose, then constricting the throat and exhaling through the nose while making an audible sound. It took a lot of practice to understand what exactly that meant, but now I regularly notice myself breathing entirely through my nose. I have heard through reliable sources (TikTok) that is what experts recommend.

DID I FEEL LIKE I WAS WORKING OUT?

I genuinely look forward to my hot yoga classes and enjoy myself while I am in them. I do, however, have to drive to the studio and get ready in a similar capacity to going to a gym. Due to this routine and the lack of socialization during class to help distract, I can’t quite say this activity does not feel like working out.

If you like to sweat, I encourage you to give hot yoga a trial run. If this activity isn’t your speed, don’t fret. I will continue trying new activities every month so you don’t have to. Follow along and see which activities are worth a try for your personal health goals, so you can work out without feeling like you’re working out!

how to conquer with ease

“Spring forward” we speak softly to ourselves to remind us of which way we’re headed when the clocks move an hour ahead. “Spring forward, spring forward.” Yes, that’s it! And, so it will be on Sunday, March 9th at 2:00 a.m. We may be losing an hour of sleep, but we will wake up to daylight! Goodbye cold, dark mornings!

As we know, there are some adjustments that need to be made whenever we spring forward or fall back.

But, just how long does it take for your body to adjust?

Our body’s time-keeping machine regulates sleep and metabolism. So, a time shift disrupts our sleep and circadian rhythms. It takes circadian and sleep rhythms a little while to transition. More specifically, the time change can affect sleeping and waking patterns for five to seven days. So, if possible, it’s a good idea to make some adjustments about one week in advance.

Here are a few tips:

START GETTING TO BED EARLIER

You can ease your body into the time change by starting your nighttime routine 15 minutes earlier in the days leading up to the start of

daylight saving time. Then, if you really want to get a jump on the time change, turn your clocks forward Saturday morning instead of Sunday morning, and live your day based on that schedule. Allowing two days rather than a single day before the start of the week can help ease your circadian rhythm into the new time.

ENJOY THE LONGER EVENINGS

One great perk about spring and daylight saving time is that there is more sunlight in the evenings. Enjoy the natural lighting outside or indoors with your curtains open. Sunlight helps naturally reset your body clock. Letting natural light come into your bedroom in the morning helps you be more alert when you wake up.

STAY CONSISTENT

Wake up at the same time each morning to keep your sleep cycle more consistent, even on weekends! Although sleeping in on your days off can help you feel more rested in the short term, it causes difficulties falling asleep and waking up during the week. In fact, getting out of bed at the same time every morning is the very best way to improve sleep and wake behaviors. A consistent sleep schedule based on a pre-determined rise time will help you feel more rested throughout the year. Getting up at the same time is far more important than going to bed at the same time, though consistency in bedtime is also important.

BE MINDFUL OF WHAT AND WHEN YOU EAT AND DRINK

Eating dinner earlier in the evening can help your body prepare for

bedtime. Try to avoid spicy or fatty foods, especially as bedtime is approaching; they can lead to indigestion and insomnia. Avoid caffeine and alcohol later in the day, so you can fall asleep more easily.

EXERCISE

Being physically active can help you sleep better, too. Go for a walk or run outdoors during daylight where you are exposed to natural sunlight. It’s best to try to avoid working out too close to your bedtime. Allow at least two hours to “cool down” from exercise before going to bed.

THOUGHTS ON ELECTRONICS

Electronics’ high intensity light hinders melatonin, a hormone that triggers sleepiness. Light stimulates your brain and makes sleep difficult in the same way sunlight does. Also, it’s a good idea to turn off the television and pick up a book. Take a warm shower. Dim the lights. Let your body relax.

TIPS FOR HELPING SMALL CHILDREN ADJUST TO THE TIME CHANGE

With the clocks changing, it is going to be light in the evenings at many children’s bedtimes. You may need to ensure your child’s room is plenty dark for their brains to get the message that it’s time for sleep. Blackout curtains can help with this, or if you need a cheap, quick fix, aluminum foil works wonders! Tape it up over the windows, and it completely blocks out all the light!

Most of us look forward to springtime but not so much to losing the hour of sleep when clocks move ahead.

Spring kicks off daylight saving time, and clocks will be turned ahead one hour. Losing that one hour of sleep can affect productivity, concentration and both physical and mental health. Fortunately, using these simple tips, we can adjust to the time change more easily and even enjoy “springing ahead” and the extra daylight it brings.

Beauty Routine for Women on the Go

I love having a simple morning makeup routine.

Although I have never been one to wear heavy makeup, I do enjoy wearing a little makeup. I enjoy putting on makeup before I go to work each day as this routine allows me to have a few minutes of self-care before my day gets busy. You definitely have to try different makeup products to see what you like and what works for your skin, but once you find products you like, it makes your routine so enjoyable.

I will say, the hardest part of putting together a makeup routine is finding the right products to use. There are so many products available to purchase that it can oftentimes feel overwhelming. I recommend that if you are looking for a new product to use to spend time researching online about specific products to help you not feel so overwhelmed by the hundreds of choices available to purchase. Below, I will share my five-minute beauty routine that you can follow each morning that allows you to still have plenty of time for breakfast, coffee and getting out the door on time.

STEP 1: TINTED MOISTURIZER OR FOUNDATION

I always start my makeup routine by putting on either a tinted moisturizer or foundation. On days that I want a more natural, glowy look, I use a tinted moisturizer. I love using a tinted moisturizer because it truly does give me a natural makeup look. I can tell that I have light coverage on, but I am still able to see the freckles on my face, so I know it is not too heavy. On days that I want a more true makeup look, I will use a foundation that gives me more coverage. I will typically wear foundation when I have special events to go to. I use my hands to apply my tinted moisturizer and a foundation brush to apply foundation.

STEP 2: FACE POWDER

After I put on either my tinted moisturizer or foundation, I will put a face powder over my entire face to help the liquid makeup set better and to also provide a little more coverage. You can typically choose

from either a loose powder or pressed powder for your face. I will use a pressed powder as this type of powder is not as messy, and I will apply the powder with a soft powder puff.

STEP 3: HIGHLIGHTER

One of my favorite steps in my makeup routine is putting on my highlighter because I always choose highlighters that are sparkly. I love putting a little highlighter on my cheekbones to help give me a pretty shimmery look throughout the day. I switch between using both pressed highlighters and liquid highlighters. I use a soft brush to apply pressed highlighter and my fingers to apply liquid highlighter.

STEP 4: YOUR PREFERRED EYE MAKEUP

Honestly, as far as eye makeup goes, I am not the best with using eye makeup. I do not wear mascara, but I do enjoy using a little sparkly eyeshadow occasionally. I have a hard time wearing mascara because it tends to smear easily, but I do enjoy wearing eyeshadow. For this step, you can choose what specific type of eye makeup works best for you in your routine.

STEP 5: DONE!

These simple steps show that you do not have to spend a long time doing your makeup routine if you are in a rush. It is easy to put together a quick, five-minute beauty routine in the mornings. I know that I always enjoy spending time putting on my makeup to get ready for the day ahead of me since I do not have too many steps to take to complete my routine. I hope that this article will help women who are busy to see that having a makeup routine does not mean it has to take a long time and that even a quick beauty routine can give you a few minutes of peace and quiet before your day begins.

REVERSE DIETING: THE SECRET TO LONG-TERM WEIGHT MAINTENANCE

Struggling to lose weight despite eating low calories? You’re not alone. Many people hit a frustrating plateau and blame themselves – but the real culprit could be metabolic adaptation. Enter reverse dieting – a lesserknown, yet powerful strategy that can help you rebuild your metabolism, boost energy levels and maintain your hard-earned progress without regaining unwanted weight!

WHAT IS REVERSE DIETING?

Reverse dieting is a strategic and gradual approach to increasing calorie intake and energy expenditure after a period of dieting. The goal is to find your new maintenance calorie level without regaining the weight you worked so hard to lose. Your maintenance calories after a diet are often lower than they were before you started dieting due to metabolic adaptations.

When done correctly, reverse dieting helps:

• Increase total daily energy (calorie) expenditure

• Reverse metabolic and hormonal adaptations caused by prolonged calorie deficits

• Prevent post-diet fat regain

WHY YOU NEED TO REVERSE DIET

After an extended calorie deficit, your body undergoes several changes:

• Lower Energy Expenditure: Your body burns fewer calories daily

• Decreased Non-Exercise Activity Thermogenesis (NEAT): You subconsciously move less

• Reduced Resting Metabolic Rate (RMR): Your body slows down to conserve energy

• Hormonal Shifts: Decreased leptin and increased ghrelin (hunger hormones), leading to constant hunger

• Training Performance Drops: Loss of strength and endurance

Beyond the physical effects, dieting also impacts your psychological state. Many people experience increased food focus and fluctuating motivation. Reverse dieting helps transition back to a balanced state.

THE PROCESS OF REVERSE DIETING

The first step in reverse dieting is getting back to a new energy balance and reversing the metabolic adaptations incurred during the diet. Staying in a calorie deficit for too long is unsustainable and often leads to overeating.

Instead of attempting to “diet forever,” a reverse diet involves slowly adding calories back into your routine, allowing your metabolism to adjust gradually.

WHO BENEFITS FROM REVERSE DIETING?

Reverse dieting can benefit:

1. Those who achieved a lean physique but want to maintain it long-term without falling into an unsustainable low-calorie trap.

2. Individuals who dieted to reach a goal but are on unsustainably low calories and need to increase intake strategically.

3. Chronic dieters who have been in a deficit for too long, experiencing low energy and minimal results.

HOW TO IMPLEMENT A REVERSE DIET

1. Identify Your Current Maintenance Calories: Use biofeedback like weight stability and energy levels.

2. Gradual Calorie Increases: Add 50-100 calories per week, focusing on protein and nutrient-dense foods.

3. Monitor Progress: Track weight, measurements and gym performance.

4. Adjust as Needed: Slow down if weight increases too quickly; increase calories faster if losing weight.

5. Maintain Healthy Habits: Prioritize whole foods and stay active.

COMMON MISTAKES IN REVERSE DIETING

1. Increasing Calories Too Quickly: Jumping back to pre-diet maintenance levels often leads to fat gain.

2. Not Tracking Biofeedback: Ignoring hunger cues and energy levels can lead to setbacks.

3. Returning to Old Eating Habits: Swapping nutrient-dense meals for processed foods can hinder progress.

4. Neglecting Exercise: A consistent workout routine helps maintain muscle and metabolic rate.

THE PSYCHOLOGICAL SHIFT

Reverse dieting isn’t just about food; it’s about mindset. Many people fear eating more after dieting, but understanding that increasing calories strategically can improve energy and overall well being is crucial. Shifting the focus from constant restriction to sustainable fueling is key to long-term success.

THE TAKEAWAY

Reverse dieting provides a structured approach to transitioning out of a fat loss phase without falling into the yo-yo dieting trap. It helps restore metabolic health, improve energy levels and create a sustainable foundation for future fitness goals. If you feel stuck despite eating low calories, it might be time to reverse diet and set yourself up for long-term success!

Southern Hospitality

You Can Bet Your Bottom Dollar It’s Real 1 2 3 4 5 6

Frederick Law Olmsted, who traveled through the South before the Civil War, wrote extensively about the hospitality he encountered—a tradition that existed long before his time. He described Southerners as “free, generous, and open-hearted.” Having lived in the Triad for over eight years, I can say with certainty that Southern hospitality is not just real; it’s a way of life.

My first taste of it came during my very first week here, as a transplant from Berkeley, California. At a restaurant, a cheerful waitress kept returning to refill my son’s and my sodas, again and again. That endless soda pop refill seemed to perfectly embody Southern hospitality. I later read an article in Our State Magazine where a journalist from Philadelphia admitted he’d encourage people to “move to North Carolina for the free soda pop alone.”

As an informal, armchair journalist, I’ve spent countless hours interviewing people in the South, and I’ve never found hospitality lacking. People freely share their stories—both their tragedies and triumphs— open their homes and lives to strangers, and insist you eat plenty at their table. As that Philadelphia writer put it, “This is how people do here.”

DEFINING SOUTHERN HOSPITALITY

How do we explain Southern hospitality to the rest of the country? The phrase typically describes a cultural stereotype of the South that highlights warmth, friendliness, and good manners. Southern values like gentility and kindness are as central to the region’s identity as sipping sweet tea on a hot afternoon.

Being polite isn’t optional—it’s ingrained. Using “sir” and “ma’am” when addressing elders, saying “please” and “thank you” instinctively, and treating others with kindness are fundamental. Another thing I noticed early on was just how chatty people are. My first week in a WinstonSalem supermarket, no fewer than six strangers struck up conversations. One man asked me how to pick the best avocado, a woman wanted to know where I got my hair done, and when I accidentally dropped a dozen eggs, several shoppers rushed over, saying, “Bless your heart!” as they helped me clean up.

THE PILLARS OF TRUE SOUTHERN HOSPITALITY

A November 2023 Southern Living Magazine article by Michelle Darrisaw outlined six defining traits of Southern hospitality:

Politeness – Taught from a young age, good manners carry into adulthood.

Good Home Cooking – Think warm peach cobbler, Hummingbird Cake, smothered chicken, and collard greens.

Kindness – “There are no strangers, just friends we haven’t met yet.”

Helpfulness –

Lending a hand is second nature.

Charm – Wit, consideration, and effortless kindness define Southern interactions.

Charity – Acts of generosity are given freely, without expectation of reciprocation.

THE OTHER SIDE OF SOUTHERN HOSPITALITY

However, as author David Denby once noted, “Graciousness is both armor and a weapon.” Southern hospitality comes with its own set of unspoken rules. Show up empty-handed to a dinner or party? That’s a faux pas. Forget to write a thankyou note? Unforgivable. Table manners, punctuality, and being a gracious host aren’t just encouraged—they’re expected. In the South, good manners are everything, and y’all better believe people take them seriously.

Some say this hospitality is rooted in a love for theatricality. Southerners adore the devil in the details and relish a good story—often with a bit of embellishment. As author Karin Slaughter put it, “Even when you read a police report, there’s some backstory.”

Ultimately, being “Southern” is as much a state of mind as it is a geographical distinction. Just the other day, I spotted a bumper sticker that read, Keep calm and get your hospitality on. If you ask me, that sentiment couldn’t be more true.

WHY WE PROCRASTINATE - And What To Do About It

Do you tend to start projects at the last minute?

Do you delay dealing with sticky problems for as long as you can?

Would you rather “face the music” later than face an unpleasant task right now?

If your answers include at least one “yes,” you know what it means to procrastinate - to purposely put off dealing with a problem or a project. While I’m guessing that probably all of us sometimes procrastinate, what’s interesting is why we do it and how the “why” can vary with the circumstances.

See if one or more of these reasons explains why you sometimes procrastinate:

FEELING OVERWHELMED

When we are overwhelmed by a seemingly impossible “must do” list, our natural fightor-flight survival reaction may kick in. Unlike our prehistoric ancestors, we can’t defeat our task list in a fight or flee from it. But since our brains don’t know that missing a deadline won’t kill us, it goes into fight-or-flight mode to protect us. However, when we can neither fight nor flee, sometimes we just freeze somewhere in between fight and flight. This shows up as procrastination. The “freeze” period allows us to temporarily avoid the tasks that are overwhelming us.

TIP: Take a hard look at what is overwhelming you. Are there tasks you can delegate to someone else? Are you doing things for others that they should be doing for themselves? Are you saying “yes” to things you should say “no” to?

THE DESIRE FOR MEANINGFUL WORK

When we don’t feel that our work matters, it can be hard to motivate ourselves to get that

work done. Whether we work for a paycheck or on a volunteer basis, if what we’re doing is not meaningful to us or if we do not enjoy it, we may struggle to keep doing it. That inner struggle for meaning may show up as procrastination.

TIP: If your work isn’t meaningful, it may be time to consider options that better match your God-given personality, strengths, talents and desires - that is, what do you really want to do?

THE PURSUIT OF PERFECTION

Are you driven by the belief that whatever you do must be done perfectly? This selfimposed pressure can be so psychologically overwhelming that it results in procrastination. If things pile up even higher while you are procrastinating, the task may become even more overwhelming, making you want to procrastinate even more. Thus, the desire to accomplish something perfectly can actually result, ironically, in accomplishing nothing!

TIP: Give serious thought to how much extra time and energy it takes to move something from “good enough” to the perfection you envision. Is attaining perfection worth the time and energy it will cost you and perhaps others? From a practical standpoint, “good enough” often really is good enough!

INDECISION

Procrastination isn’t always a bad thing. Sometimes we procrastinate because we’re just not sure about what decision to make. If we are on a personal journey of self-discovery, we may not yet be sure how the puzzle pieces fit together, or we may not yet have discovered our “why” – the motivating purpose that defines and drives our choices. When we’re making potentially life-altering decisions, a period of thoughtful hesitation is wise. It allows us time to gather information, discuss options with others, reflect and, if we’re looking for

God’s direction, allow time to receive it. We shouldn’t even think of this kind of intentional pause as procrastination; we should reframe it as an expression of exactly what Proverbs 4:26 tells us to do: “Give careful thought to the paths for your feet.”

PURPOSEFUL PROCRASTINATION

Experts suggest that instead of scolding ourselves for wasting time by procrastinating, we should instead see our mental “freeze” or pause as an opportunity. According to sociologist Dr. Christine Carter, “Our brains really benefit when we ‘waste time’...when we let ourselves daydream or our minds wander, an area of our brain comes online that is responsible for creative insight, and our best work comes from those creative insights.” Psychologist Alice Boyes has seen how “wasting time” benefits her. She wrote, “When I go for a walk…I let my mind drift without directing it too much. Solutions to problems magically emerge, and what I should prioritize becomes clearer without effort.”

We can use this same technique to make procrastination work for us! The secret to creative, productive procrastination is to give ourselves permission to just let our thoughts freely roam. That seems counterintuitive because, when we procrastinate, our tendency is to forcefeed our minds by scrolling social media posts, playing a video game or binge watching TV. But, when we distract our minds with entertainment, we miss out on the productivity potential of procrastination that naturally comes from letting our minds just drift.

So, when you find yourself procrastinating, why not make it purposeful? Instead of reaching for some way to entertain your brain, let your mind freely wander. “Waste some time” and see what happens!

March: A Month to Celebrate Women’s Strength, Stories, and Success

March is a time of renewal, a shift from winter to spring, and most importantly, a month dedicated to honoring the achievements, contributions, and resilience of women throughout history and today. As we celebrate Women’s History Month and International Women’s Day (March 8th), we reflect on the trailblazers who have paved the way and the everyday women making a difference in their communities, workplaces, and families.

THE HISTORY BEHIND THE CELEBRATION

Women’s History Month began as a weeklong celebration in 1980 before expanding into a full month in 1987. It serves as a reminder of the countless women who have broken barriers, challenged norms, and shaped industries. From activists like Susan B. Anthony and Malala Yousafzai to pioneers in science like Marie Curie and Katherine Johnson, history is filled with stories of women who refused to be limited by societal expectations.

International Women’s Day, celebrated annually on March 8th, is a global movement recognizing the social, economic, cultural, and political achievements of women. The day also serves as a call to action for gender equality and empowerment, with this year’s theme focusing on #InspireInclusion, encouraging communities to celebrate diversity and advocate for equal opportunities.

POWERFUL STATS THAT HIGHLIGHT WOMEN’S IMPACT

Women have continuously shattered glass ceilings and made remarkable progress across industries. Here are some statistics that highlight their incredible impact:

Women-Owned Businesses: There are over 13 million women-owned businesses in the U.S., accounting for nearly 40% of all businesses. Women entrepreneurs continue to drive innovation and create economic opportunities.

Education & Workforce: Women now earn more than 57% of bachelor’s degrees and 60% of master’s degrees in the U.S., showcasing their commitment to education and professional growth.

Leadership: While there’s still progress to be made, women now hold approximately 30% of leadership roles globally, proving that boardrooms and executive suites are no longer just a man’s world.

Community & Advocacy: Women contribute more than twice the amount of unpaid labor in households and communities compared to men, demonstrating their unwavering dedication to family and social well-being.

CELEBRATING WOMEN EVERY DAY

At Forsyth Woman, our mission has always been to celebrate, empower, and uplift women. Whether it’s spotlighting female entrepreneurs, sharing stories of local women making a difference, or providing a platform for women’s voices to be heard, we believe in the power of community and connection.

So, how can you join the celebration this March?

• Support Women-Owned Businesses: Shop local and invest in businesses run by women in our community.

• Lift Up the Women Around You: A simple word of encouragement, mentorship, or support can make all the difference.

• Educate & Advocate: Read about inspiring women, attend events, and advocate for policies that promote gender equality.

• Take a Moment for Yourself: Celebrating women includes celebrating you! Prioritize self-care and acknowledge your own achievements.

As we honor Women’s History Month and International Women’s Day, let’s continue the momentum all year long—because every woman’s story matters, and every woman deserves to be celebrated.

Happy Women’s History Month from all of us at Forsyth Woman!

Business Lessons from a Proverbs 31 Woman

Sheridan C. Watkins is a journalist and the owner of Perennial Peaces, a jewelry and gifts brand focused on transcending self-worth to all women. Her true work began after climbing out of a dark place with the help of God and therapy and her life mission is to provide tangible peace through her Divine gifts to help women heal and transform their life. Follow the mission on Instagram and Facebook: @perennialpeaces

The purpose of Proverbs is to teach us how to attain wisdom and do what is right, just and fair in our daily lives. I think it’s beautiful that Proverbs ends with a woman who embodies just that. The Proverbs 31 woman has been held in high esteem in our society due to the duties she seems to handle with grace. Some scholars have speculated that the Proverbs 31 woman is not one woman, but a conglomeration of admirable attributes of different women. Others say that she’s not a woman at all, but a personification of wisdom. Regardless of what’s accurate, this chapter has lessons to glean. Since it is Women’s History Month, I will assume the position of talking about one woman, so let’s take it from there.

Aside from her accomplishments, there’s a lot we can glean from her essence, and there are beautiful hidden gems in verses 10-31 that I’m excited to dive into and share my interpretation. I discovered that those verses create an acrostic poem as each scripture begins with the successive letters of the Hebrew alphabet. To me, that subtle charm exemplifies the beauty that women sprinkle onto the things we touch.

The first verse introduces this woman and mentions her noble character and self worth (Proverb 31:10). Before highlighting your accomplishments, you must understand that you are precious in the eyes of God and worth, “far more than rubies,” because He made you. Simply existing and evolving to be the best version of yourself makes you priceless. And, it is because of this woman’s character that, “her husband has full confidence in her,” (Proverb 31:11). When you value who you are, you give others no other option than to follow suit. But, it’s not just a one way street. Verse 12 says, “She brings him good, not harm, all the days of her life.”

I paid closer attention to the order of the words describing the Proverbs 31 woman. It doesn’t start with her accolades and leadership skills, as society tends to focus on, but rather, it highlights her character and her being. So, who are you before the work you do? I believe her self esteem is the reason she shows up and, “works with eager hands,” (Proverb 31:13). She seems to enjoy her life and is determined enough to, “get up while it is still night [and] provide food for her family.” (Proverbs 31:15)

So far, the Proverbs 31 woman shows us God is first because He made her, then her family and then we

finally get into what she does for a living in verses 16-24. God desires wealth in all areas of your life. What good is an honorable plague if your house isn’t in order? What good is achieving milestones that many people pray for, like marriage and children, if you’re miserable with whom you spend most of your time? The Proverbs 31 woman lays out how to make an impact and keep your family together – work not only for yourself but everyone you’re connected to. You should be working for your family, employees, church and community. Why? It unveils ways to bring in more money and wealth which is fantastic for business. My pastor once said, “If God can get money through, He will give money to you.” The Proverbs 31 woman diversified her portfolio and became a manufacturer, importer, manager, realtor, farmer, seamstress, upholsterer and merchant which speaks to the many skills and talents God has placed in all women. You are intricately complex and can hold multiple titles at the same time. I’ve

heard many business tips about creating multiple income streams, however, the Bible said it first!

As you diversify your income, you must ensure your efforts are “profitable” (Proverb 31:18). God’s daughters are not in business to lose money, so this is when your boss woman energy comes out unapologetically. When you work hard and give God something to bless, there’s little room for worry in rough seasons (Proverb 31:21). When you are diligent and focused, your efforts will invite an overflow to be a blessing to those in need (Proverb 31: 20). When you work selflessly, you also put respect on the names attached to you (Proverb 31:23). When you stay faithful, you will enjoy each day and spread hope and wisdom to those who will eternally love and respect your journey (Proverbs 31:25-31).

Mighty is God in the lives of women! Read Proverbs 31 today with this new interpretation, and I hope it helps you see your greatness in a different light. I have faith in you.

THE HIGH COST OF DISENGAGEMENT and Three Steps to Address It

Disengaged employees are only there for the paycheck, doing the bare minimum to get by. According to Gallup, only 30% of employees are engaged in most organizations in the US. Consider the following:

• 70% are only partially engaged or are disengaged in their work

• 17% are actively disengaged meaning that they actively work against the company, undermine what their engaged coworkers are trying to accomplish and can infect up to seven other employees

HOW MUCH IS DISENGAGEMENT COSTING YOU?

According to Gallup, disengaged employees have:

• 37% higher absenteeism

• 18% lower productivity

• 5% lower profitability

When that translates into dollars, you’re looking at the cost of 34% of a disengaged employee’s annual salary, or $3,400 for every $10,000 they make. YIKES!

FIXING YOUR ENGAGEMENT PROBLEM

The first step towards fixing your engagement problem is acknowledging the problem exists and committing to taking proactive steps to fix it. This may be a more significant stumbling block than you might think!

According to an Achievers study:

• 9% said the leadership in their organizations is very committed to culture initiatives

• 58% of respondents said that their leadership takes no action to try to improve culture

• There are some overarching things your organization needs to do if it has a big engagement problem which I will share over the next few weeks. However, let’s look at three steps that the manager can take towards moving these employees up towards engagement or out of the organization as they can do a lot of harm.

THREE STEPS TO ADDRESS DISENGAGEMENT:

Have a stay interview-type conversation with the employee.

• Ask them some open ended questions such as:

• What do you like the most about working here?

• What do you like least about working here?

• What would you like to learn here?

• What motivates (or demotivates) you?

• What can I do to best support you?

• Show you care and act on the feedback they share if you can.

Begin holding them accountable by setting goals and having regular conversations about progress.

Ensure that you share clear expectations, and set some specific goals around those expectations. I like to use a format which includes the specific goal, steps and deadline. Meet with them regularly to monitor progress and share two-way feedback on how things are going.

1 2 3

Start the corrective action or PIP (performance improvement plan) process if performance/behavior continues to be subpar.

If they aren’t achieving goals, use your organization’s disciplinary action process to move them out of the organization. If you discover that they may be in the wrong seat on the bus, you may be able to help with identifying a better fit for them.

The Masks Women Wear AND THE POWER TO CHOOSE

In a world where appearances often speak louder than words, the way women choose to present themselves is a powerful form of expression. The “masks” we wear – whether through makeup, fashion or hairstyling – act as both shields and canvases, shaping personal identity and signaling empowerment. Women’s styling choices can be interpreted as an essential element of self identity and a means of liberation, and women’s identities can be shaped by their relationship with beauty and the masks they choose to wear. First impressions matter, and the adage “clothes make the woman” resonates deeply.

THE MASK CONCEPT

Psychologically, the concept of wearing a mask can be understood as a method of coping with societal expectations and norms. Women often feel pressure to conform to certain standards of beauty, influenced by media portrayals, cultural traditions and peer perceptions. These pressures can lead to a dual identity – the authentic self, hidden behind the socially accepted facade. However, this “mask” can also empower women, allowing them to explore different facets of their personality and express their individuality.

BEAUTY AND IDENTITY

Beauty is a multifaceted notion, shaped by cultural and social contexts. For many women, engaging with beauty – whether through makeup, hairstyles, fashion choices or accessories – is not merely about attraction, it is an assertion of identity. Makeup products serve as more than tools for enhancement; they become symbols of creativity and self care. In the act of beautifying themselves, women embrace the freedom to redefine how they perceive themselves and how they wish to be perceived. Fashion, makeup and personal styling can serve as powerful tools for self expression, identity formation and empowerment.

Songs celebrating female empowerment often underscore this theme. Tracks like Beyoncé’s “Flawless” or Lizzo’s “Good as Hell” encourage women to take pride in their unique beauty and to challenge conventional standards. The lyrics resonate with a message of confidence and self acceptance, reinforcing the idea that beauty is not merely skin deep but intricately linked to one’s inner worth.

BEAUTY AND SELF ESTEEM

Engaging with beauty practices offers psychological benefits that contribute to empowerment. Studies indicate that when women invest time and resources into their appearance, they often experience heightened self esteem and self efficacy. This aligns with the theory of self presentation, where individuals modify their appearance to control how others perceive them which gives women a sense of agency over their identity.

Beauty rituals serve as a form of self care, promoting mental well being. The meditative act of applying makeup or choosing an outfit can provide space for reflection and personal expression. In a world increasingly focused on productivity and output, these moments of creativity allow women to reconnect with their desires and aspirations.

BEAUTY AS FREEDOM OF EXPRESSION

Beauty celebrates diversity – in all its forms and expressions. Women are reclaiming beauty by embracing their natural features,

challenging stereotypes and promoting inclusivity. The rise of body positivity movements has redefined traditional beauty standards, suggesting that empowerment stems from authenticity, not conformity. Influencers and activists advocate for a broader definition of beauty that honors individuality, encouraging women to wear their masks – or choose to remove them – based on personal preference rather than societal demands.

BEAUTY AND EMPOWERMENT

To appreciate beauty as part of our identity and freedom of expression, women must internalize the message that they have the power to choose. Whether it’s selecting bold colors, minimalist styles, extravagant hairstyles or going makeup-free, beauty choices should reflect personal values and feelings. This appreciation fosters a healthy relationship with beauty practices, allowing women to experience empowerment, not just externally but internally, as well.

The psychology behind the masks women wear extends beyond superficiality. Beauty, in its many forms, is interwoven with identity, empowerment and freedom of expression. By understanding the significance of these choices, women can navigate societal pressures more confidently, celebrating their uniqueness rather than succumbing to conformity.

Ultimately, the power lies not in the mask itself but in the autonomy to wear it – or to leave it aside altogether – infusing the notion of beauty with authenticity, strength and liberation.

“What Should I Expect As I Grieve the End of My Marriage?”

The end of a marriage is often the most challenging experience a person can go through in his or her lifetime. It involves a profound sense of loss and the necessity to navigate a complex emotional landscape. The grieving process is not often a straight path, but understanding five of the most experienced stages of grief during the end of a marriage can provide a roadmap for healing and knowing that you aren’t alone in what you are feeling.

DENIAL

The initial stage of facing the end of a marriage is most often denial. In this phase, you may struggle to accept the reality of your situation, clinging to the hope that the separation is temporary or that circumstances will change. Denial acts as a buffer against the immediate pain and the hit-you-in-the-face feeling that things are indeed over.

HEARTBREAK

Heartbreak often follows denial, bringing the profound sadness and emotional pain associated with the loss of the marital relationship. This stage is characterized by intense feelings of sorrow,

loneliness and a deep sense of missing your partner and the life that was shared. You may have times of intense crying, disrupted sleep and a sense of being overwhelmed by emotions.

QUESTIONING

The questioning stage is marked by introspection and a search for understanding; you may replay the actions that led to the ending of the marriage, usually over and over and over. This stage usually involves self blame, regret and a desire to find meaning for the dissolution of the relationship.

HOPELESSNESS

As with any loss in life, hopelessness can be one of the most difficult stages as it involves feelings of despair and a belief that the future is bleak. During this phase, you may struggle to see life with your partner and feel like you will never know happiness again. The weight of the loss can feel unbearable, and you might feel a sense of emotional numbness or deep depression.

HEALING

Healing is the final stage where acceptance and recovery begin to take hold. In this phase, you may start to embrace their new reality, rediscovering your identity outside of the marriage, finding ways to move forward. You no longer are referred to as, “aren’t you so and so’s wife?” You have renewed hope, emotional resilience and the ability to look towards the future with optimism. Healing does not imply forgetting the past but rather integrating the experience into one’s life and growing from it.

Grieving the end of a marriage is a deeply personal and unique journey. While the stages of denial, heartbreak, questioning, hopelessness and healing provide a general map of what your journey may look like, everyone goes through it at their own pace and, at times, can double back and repeat a step or two along the way. Recognizing and understanding these stages can help individuals navigate their emotions and ultimately find a new path of recovery and happiness.
