Celebrated annually on July 7th, World Chocolate Day commemorates the introduction of chocolate to Europe in 1550.

This annual, global event is about enjoying and sharing a passion for chocolate in all its forms, from dark to milk, bars to truffles and everything in between! Whether you’re a certified chocoholic or simply delight in an occasional treat, join with chocolate fans around the world to appreciate and celebrate one of life’s yummiest indulgences. As chocolate is routinely featured at every joyful event, it is fitting that, in 2009, chocolate was given its own day to take center stage!

The theme for 2025 World Chocolate Day is “sustainable and ethical chocolate” – shining a light on organic farming, promoting fair trade practices and supporting the livelihoods of cocoa farmers while maintaining a commitment to environmental stewardship.

There’s only one thing better than chocolate. More chocolate!

UNWRAPPING HISTORY

The “chocolate story” began more than 5,000 years ago in ancient civilizations like the Mayans. These early cultures believed cacao was a gift from the gods and, as such, chocolate (“chocolhaa” which means “bitter water”) was revered and used in religious rituals and special celebrations (prepared as a drink). In the 16th century, Spanish explorers brought cacao beans from the Americas to Europe and added sugar and vanilla to make the chocolatey drink more enticing to Spanish tastes. This sweet, delectable treat instantly became a popular beverage, especially among the elites. In 1847, an Englishman, Joseph Fry, began experimenting with a solid form of chocolate and ignited a global love affair. That bold move, coupled with the industrial revolution and development of the cocoa press, forever changed the way the world consumed the majority of chocolate – delighting taste buds everywhere. Statistics show that nine out of 10 people have a passion for chocolate, and an astonishing one billion people enjoy it on a daily basis. That’s a whole lot of chocolate love!

Chocolate is truly one of life’s simple pleasures.

Around the globe, people celebrate World Chocolate Day in many and varied ways, from attending chocolate making workshops, experimenting with new chocolate recipes or just enjoying their favorite chocolate goodies. It is also an opportunity to raise awareness about ethical and sustainable practices in chocolate production. No matter how you decide to celebrate the impact chocolate has had on the world (e.g. cultural, historical, economic, culinary), the key is to savor and enjoy the sweetness. Here are some scrumptious ideas to celebrate World Chocolate Day. Chocolate Themed Movie Night: Select one or more chocolate-themed movies and enjoy them with favorite chocolate treats (e.g. Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory, Chocolat, etc).

Visit a Chocolate Factory: Take a tour of a local chocolate factory or visit a specialty chocolate store to see how chocolate is made and taste fresh samples.

Chocolate Tasting Party: Gather friends and family for an evening of delicious fun. Have them bring their favorite chocolate recipes to share. Serve a chocolate charcuterie.

For the Love of Chocolate: Share the joy of chocolate with others by gifting them with chocolate bars, truffles, fudge or homemade chocolate treats.

Chocolate Pairings: Combine different chocolates with wine, nuts, cheese or fruit – you may discover a new and flavorful combination.

All you need is love. But a little chocolate now and then doesn’t hurt.

10 FUN CHOCOLATE FACTS: 1. Dark chocolate is rich in antioxidants which improves heart health, lowers blood pressure and reduces inflammation.

2. West Africa grows 70% of the cacao trees in the world today.

3. The Aztec emperor Montezuma reportedly drank 50 cups of chocolate each day for energy and love.

4. Chocolate releases dopamine (the love hormone) and has been a romantic symbol since the 1800s.

5. Cacao beans were so valuable to the Aztecs that they were used as currency.

6. Chocolate contains compounds like theobromine and phenylethylamine, which reduces stress hormones 7. The record for the world’s largest chocolate bar weighed more than 12,000 pounds and was 13 feet in length.

8. Chocolate melts at 93 degrees, below human body temperature, which is why it melts so smoothly in your mouth.

9. Valentine’s Day became commercialized during the Victoria era – the first heartshaped box of chocolates was created in 1861.

10. It takes 400 cocoa beans to make one pound of chocolate.

What holiday isn’t complete without food? Whether you make your feast together or just dine together, food is a great way to bring the family together this Independence Day! Below are a few fun red, white and blue inspired food ideas.

• Red, White & Blue Fruit Skewers – Layer strawberries, bananas and blueberries on sticks.

• American Flag Veggie Tray – Arrange red bell peppers or cherry tomatoes, cauliflower and blue corn tortilla chips in a flag shape.

• Sparkler Pretzel Rods – Put melted white chocolate on pretzel sticks and then top with red and blue sprinkles.

• Red, White & Blue Nachos – Create nachos with blue corn chips, white cheese/sour cream and salsa.

• Patriotic Punch – Use fruit punch (red), lemonade (white) and blue sports drink to create this. Note: Pour slowly over ice to keep layers separate.

TURNING SETBACKS INTO STRENGTH: How to Teach Resilience to Your Family

Life doesn’t always go as planned,

and that’s okay. In fact, it’s often through life’s obstacles that we discover our deepest strengths. Teaching our families how to face setbacks with grace, grit and God’s guidance is one of the most powerful gifts we can pass on. Children are like a sponge and absorb our habits and behaviors until they’re ingrained. It’s a vulnerable period for them, and I’m sure we all want to raise strong and resilient contributors to society. The longer we live, the more situations we face, good and bad. No matter what, let’s show our families how to thrive through it all.

THE TRUTH ABOUT RESILIENCE Resilience isn’t about avoiding hard times, it’s about growing through them. The ability to bounce back when life knocks you down will be a skill that propels you in life, and this can be taught, modeled and practiced with your family. Have you ever looked back at certain situations in your childhood and had no idea your family was struggling? In an age-appropriate way, I believe it’s sometimes

necessary to be vulnerable with your children about hardships the family may be going through because it gives your children an opportunity to see reality play out and learn life lessons that will help them in adulthood. Facing difficulty should not make you feel inferior or inadequate, but rather empower you to believe you are a conqueror because you will come out on the other side, like you always have.

STAY ROOTED IN SCRIPTURE The Bible is packed with stories of people who faced unimaginable trials and came out stronger, not because they had it all together, but because they leaned on God. Teaching this to your children or having family Bible study nights can be a huge benefit to everyone’s confidence. Look at the story of Joseph, Job, Moses and Esther, to name a few. Have a discussion with your family so everyone can share what they would have done in their shoes and how they think God helped them through. This can plant seeds of resilience early on.

KEEP A TRACK RECORD I believe it’s great to journal so you can always recollect God’s divine assistance, answered prayers and your tenacity during uncertain times. Turn this into something exciting to do for family nights by having a journaling session. This will allow everyone to sit with their feelings as they write and contribute to something they can always refer back to over the years.

RESILIENCE IN DAILY LIFE When you encounter hardships, uncomfortable moments or failures, allow them to bring your family together by talking openly, praying and remembering how much you’ve already overcome. Setbacks will come, but so will growth. With love, vulnerability and encouragement, your family can become a team that not just survives challenges but also shines through them, inspiring others to do the same. Remember, resilience isn’t about never falling but more about rising, again and again, with God by your side.

Jeff also explains how fundraisers like our upcoming July concert at the Cain Center allow them to reinvest money back into the communities they serve — in tangible and meaningful ways.

“We have partnered with several local non-profits including FeedNC, the Neighborhood CARE Center and the Levine Children’s Hospital,” he shares. “We’re also able to take care of our firefighters statewide who are in need, assisting them financially when injured on the job and with unforeseen events. We can also provide resources to members and families in the unfortunate event they pass away in the line of duty, or from a job-related illness or disease.”

It’s a mission that’s only possible through community support — which is why events like IGNITE THE NIGHT matter so much. With

And to balance off the sweet, we have a variety of bright savory produce like green beans, celery, cauliflower, bok choy, cucumbers, zucchini, mushrooms, leeks, potatoes, bell peppers and just about every other pepper you can think of in season!

If you’ve ever visited Florida during the summer months, you’ll probably notice a popular dessert called Key Lime Pie that’s made with these tiny key limes that are much more concentrated in flavor. These key limes paired with a few other simple ingredients makes for a refreshing balance of creamy sweeteness and tart tanginess that most Floridians, especially in the Floriday Keys, have excelled in making. And now you can too with this authentic key lime pie recipe!

AUTHENTIC KEY LIME PIE

PREP. TIME: 30 MINUTES | COOK TIME: 30 MINUTES RESTING TIME: 1 HOUR | TOTAL TIME 1 HOUR 30 MINUTES SERVINGS: 10

INGREDIENTS

For the Crust: 2 cups Graham Crackers crushed, about 1 1/2 sleeves 1/4 cup Brown Sugar 1/2 cup Melted Butter Pinch of Fine Sea Salt For the Filling: For the Meringue Topping: 4 Egg Yolks save the egg whites 4 large Egg Whites 14 oz. Sweetened Condensed Milk 1 cup Granulated Cane Sugar 2 tbsp. Key Lime Zest 2 tsp. Vanilla Extract 1/2 cup Fresh Key Lime Juice

INSTRUCTIONS

For the Crust: 1. Preheat oven to 350F. Grease a 9” pie plate with softened butter.

2. In a food processor, pulse the graham crackers until very fine crumb texture.

Add the brown sugar and salt. Pulse to combine.

3. On LOW speed, drizzle in the melted butter. The texture will be crumby but should stick together when pressed between two fingers. If not, add up to 2-3 tablespoons more melted butter.

4. Press along the bottom and sides of the prepared pie plate using the back of a spoon.

5. Bake for 10 minutes. Let cool at least 10-15 minutes as you prepare the filling.

For the Filling: 1. In a large bowl, combine the egg yolks and key lime zest. Beat with a whisk for 2 minutes.

2. Add the sweetened condensed milk and juice to whisk vigorously for 1-2 minutes. Set aside at room temperature as the crust bakes and cools.

3. Pour into the cooled graham cracker crust. Even out the surface with the back of a spoon.

4. Bake for 15-18 minutes, until center is set but still jiggly.

5. Let cool at room temperature for 30 minutes, then chill in the fridge 2-3 hours to overnight to set.

For the Meringue Topping: 1. TIP: The meringue topping is best made same day as serving the key lime pie. It can be covered and stored in the fridge the night before, but for best textures, I’d recommend enjoying the same day.

2. Combine the sugar and egg whites in a stand mixer bowl (preferably stainless steel). Whisk to combine.

3. Bring 2-3” of water in a small saucepan to a boil over medium heat.

4. Add the stand mixer bowl on top and continue whisking until the sugar has dissolved. To test, rub a bit between two fingers to make sure it’s smooth and not grainy.

5. Transfer immediately to the stand mixer fitted with the whisk attachment to beat on HIGH for 4-5 minutes, until stiff peaks.

Beat in the vanilla extract for 30 seconds.

6. Top the chilled key lime pie with the meringue topping and extra key lime zest to serve!

The History of Popsicles

Who doesn’t love a Popsicle?

We love them because they conjure up memories of our childhood. We love them because they are a cool, refreshing indulgence on a hot day. We love them because the sugary treat makes our children smile. Just the act of eating an ice-cold popsicle can be comforting and relieve stress.

So, where did these wonderful, nostalgic snacks come from? Here’s a bit of history and some fun facts about the Popsicles we love.

The Popsicle was invented by accident in 1905 by 11-year-old Frank Epperson, from San Francisco, who left a mixture of powdered soda, water and a stirring stick on his porch where it froze overnight. He initially named it “Epsicle” and later changed it to “Popsicle” after his children called it “Pop’s ‘sicle.” Today, that happy accident is celebrated by millions of Popsicle lovers worldwide.

THE ORIGINAL POPSICLE HAD SEVEN FLAVORS

When Frank Epperson began selling his Popsicles commercially in the 1920s, he didn’t settle for just one flavor. The original group included seven: lemon, cherry, orange, grape, root beer, banana and watermelon. These flavors were a hit at places like amusement parks and beaches, where people lined up for a refreshing five cent treat.

The variety of flavors showed Epperson’s creativity from the very beginning. Popsicle flavors have evolved, but cherry, orange and grape remain classics, proving that some things never lose their appeal.

THE DOUBLE-STICK DESIGN WAS A DEPRESSION-ERA INVENTION

Did you ever wonder why some Popsicles come with two sticks? It’s not just for sharing (though that is a bonus). During the Great Depression in the 1930s, Popsicle sales took a hit as families tightened their budgets. To keep the treat affordable, the Popsicle company introduced the twin-stick version. For a nickel, you could buy one and snap it in half to share with a friend…or save half for later. The design was a brilliant marketing move, turning a single treat into a mutual experience during difficult times.

POPSICLES HELPED FIGHT POLIO AND OTHER ILLNESSES

Who would have thought that Popsicles would play a role in medical history? In the 1940s and 1950s, during the height of the polio epidemic, doctors discovered that Popsicles could help ease sore throats and keep young patients hydrated. The cold treat soothed discomfort and encouraged kids to take in fluids when they might otherwise refuse. Hospitals stocked up on Popsicles, and parents saw them as a small comfort during an uncertain time. It’s a heartwarming footnote in Popsicle history – proof that this simple snack has had a part in healing and comforting the sick.

POPSICLES HAVE THEIR OWN HOLIDAY

If you’re looking for a reason to have a Popsicle (but, who really needs a reason)… mark your calendar for August 26th which is National Popsicle Day in the United States!

This unofficial holiday celebrates Frank Epperson’s accidental invention and the joy Popsicles have brought to generations.

While the origins of this holiday are unclear, it’s a day when fans of the frozen treat can enjoy one in celebration of this special day.

THERE’S A WORLD RECORD FOR EATING POPSICLES

How many Popsicles can you eat in one sitting? For most of us, one or two might be enough, but one man took it to the extreme. In 2004, Kevin Strahle, better known as “L.A. Beast,” set a world record by eating 12 Popsicles in just one minute. Talk about brain-freeze! This accomplishment required not just speed but a tolerance for icy overload. Strahle, who is a competitive eater and YouTube personality, pulled it off with classic cherry, grape and orange Popsicles.

THE SCIENCE OF POPSICLES IS COOLER THAN YOU THINK

Did you ever wonder why Popsicles don’t freeze into solid blocks like ice cubes?

It’s all about the science of sugar and temperature. Popsicles are a mix of water, sugar and flavorings, and the sugar lowers the freezing point. This keeps the texture soft and slushy rather than rock hard, making them easy to bite into or lick.

Humane Solution Spay-Neuter Program CELEBRATING 25 YEARS OF COMPASSION AND CARING FOR ANIMALS

The roots of Humane Solution Spay-Neuter Program trace back to the unwavering dedication of Winston-Salem native Leila Warren who saw firsthand the heartbreaking effects of pet overpopulation through her work with a local animal shelter – full kennels, limited adoptive homes, unvaccinated animals and animals at risk of euthanasia. Rescue wasn’t enough, and preventative care was needed, along with a way to offer the care to low-income pet guardians.

A MISSION BORN OF NEED

In 1995, Leila Warren co-founded an animal welfare organization, and volunteers began fostering, rescuing and rehoming countless animals. But, even with tireless work, the flow of unwanted pets never stopped. It became clear that rescue alone could not solve the crisis; it was treating the symptoms, not the cause.

EXPANDING SERVICES, GROWING IMPACT

“In 1999, with the founding of Humane Solution Spay-Neuter Program, our goal was to make spay-neuter services affordable, convenient and safe through a voucher program,” said Leila. “Around 2008, we began offering pop-up vaccine clinics. We later added microchips and nail trims for dogs and cats at clinics throughout the year. In 2019, we started offering services for feral/community cats, an underserved area of animal care. Community cats live in colonies and can produce up to three litters a year with an average litter of five kittens. We use Trap-Neuter-Return (TNR) and offer humane traps for caretakers to catch the cats and bring them in for spay-neuter surgery and vaccines – then return them to their original location.

But, there was more to be done to address pet overpopulation.

“Our spay-neuter voucher program was working well until COVID shut down all ‘nonessential’ veterinary surgeries which included

spay-neuter. Many animal hospitals were faced with a veterinarian shortage leaving hard realities about their capacity to provide services to their clients. Consequently, our voucher clients were waiting longer to get appointments to have their pets spayed or neutered. Humane Solution recognized an unused surgical suite at the Forsyth County Animal Shelter. In partnership with the county, The Solution Spay-Neuter Clinic opened last July to offer spay-neuter surgeries to shelter animals and to our voucher patients. Since opening The Solution, we have altered more than 1,800 animals which include feral cats.

The clinic directly impacts unwanted litters which is the mission of Humane Solution,” Leila commented.

A MESSAGE THAT NEEDS TO BE HEARD

While Humane Solution works to raise awareness of the importance of spay-neuter, the message about pet overpopulation has gotten lost over the years.

“I grew up hearing Bob Barker end ‘The Price is Right’ by saying, ‘Help control the pet population…have your pets spayed or neutered,’ but the message seems to have gotten lost over the years. I was shocked and outraged that society dealt with pet overpopulation by killing healthy, adoptable dogs, puppies, cats and kittens simply because there were too many. North Carolina has the third-highest euthanasia rate in the country. Education is sorely needed to inform the public about the reality of pet overpopulation. Prevention is key to reducing the deaths of animals in shelters,” stated Leila.

Making Summer A SEASON OF FULL PLATES AND BRIGHT TOMORROWS

or many families, summer is a season of possibility—time outdoors, family road trips, and kids soaking up sunshine.

But for others in our community, it’s a season of added strain.

When school doors close, so do cafeterias—and with them, access to the free or reduced-price meals that so many children count on to stay nourished and ready to learn.

These meals are lovingly made by our Providence team of chefs and volunteers, then delivered to trusted sites like community centers, YMCA programs, and more.

The reality? Very few children who receive school meals during the academic year can access summer meal sites. Lack of transportation, caregiver work schedules, and limited site availability all play a role. So instead of a break from routine, summer can bring uncertainty about something as basic as food.

One young girl told us, “This lunch makes me feel full and happy.” Another added, “The apples are my favorite. And the juice. Thank you for thinking of us.”

Alicia, a longtime elementary school teacher and now a Second Harvest volunteer, saw the effects firsthand.

“You could always tell who didn’t have enough to eat,” she shared. “Some kids came to school too tired to learn, their heads on their desks. Others were bouncing off the walls from too many sugary snacks—because there was no real food at home.”

To help, Alicia kept oatmeal and oranges in her desk drawer to quietly offer hungry students. She even started a school garden to teach kids where food comes from.

Alongside this work, Second Harvest continues to stock the shelves of hundreds of local food assistance programs— partners serving families every day in neighborhoods across Northwest North Carolina.

But we cannot do this alone—and we cannot do it without strong federal nutrition programs. SNAP, the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, plays a vital role in helping families keep nutritious food on the table year-round. In fact, for every meal our Food Bank provides, SNAP provides nine.

Right now, proposed cuts to SNAP in the federal budget threaten to make this work even harder.

“When we supply children with the nutrition they need,” she said, “they become more attentive, alert, and aware.”

Are you looking for fun new activities to keep them engaged – and maybe even learn a little? A scavenger hunt is the answer! This is a great way to keep your kids and family entertained. You can even create multiple ones to last all summer!

TIPS FOR SCAVENGER HUNTS

Before you plan out your scavenger hunt clues and ideas, below are a few tips and things to consider.

Keep it age appropriate. If you have multiple age levels in your family, consider putting different aged kids together on teams.

•

Don’t overdo it. It is easy to get on a roll since putting one together is fun! But, keep time and focus levels in mind, especially for younger kids.

•

Plan it at a good time. You don’t want anyone stressed or hungry during your scavenger hunt! So, make sure it’s not close to a nap or mealtime!

•

Keep the weather in mind if it’s an outdoor hunt.

Have a backup plan or date if storms are in the forecast!

•

Have fun with it! If you have fun putting it together, then your kids/family will enjoy it!

SCAVENGER HUNT IDEAS

There are all types of scavenger hunts, and creating one doesn’t have to be hard! Here are some ideas for putting one together for your kids or family.

INDOOR VS. OUTDOOR

You can choose to create a scavenger hunt that utilizes indoor or outdoor spaces, or both! If creating an outdoor one, try to work in a little learning about nature.

For example, finding specific types of plants for older kids or spotting various animals for younger kids. Indoor scavenger hunts are great if you know it’s going to be hot or rainy on the days you want to have your hunt.

USE A THEME

Another fun option for a scavenger hunt is creating one based on a theme. It could be anything from “things that go” to “food.” For younger children, you could do a simpler theme, like a specific color.

MAKE AN ANNOUNCEMENT

Scavenger hunts are a fun and interactive way to make announcements to your kids. Back when I was a single mom, I had a trip planned for my oldest daughter and myself to go to Puerto Rico and on a Disney Cruise. So, to announce this surprise trip, I did a scavenger hunt with clues (each clue lead to an item needed for a beach trip like sandals, swimsuit, etc.) and the last item was a journal that shared about the trip in the beginning.

LIST VS. CLUE

There are two major “types” of scavenger hunts, ones that have a list and you find the items or ones that lead from one clue to the next. Lists are great if you have a lot of things to find or younger children. You can even do picture lists. Clues are great for older children, team scavenger hunts or ones that lead to an announcement.

LOCATION MATTERS

Determine where you will do the scavenger hunt first as that will set the tone and help you know what you want to do with your hunt. Will it be at your home – inside or the backyard? Do you want to have it at a park if it’s a nature hunt? These are good questions to ask yourself before you plan it out!

LEARNING IS FUN

Don’t be afraid to add in some learning components to your scavenger hunts. You could incorporate clues or list items from books your kids are reading. Or, for nature hunts, you can encourage learning about different animals or plants.

HOW MONEY MANAGEMENT IMPACTS CHILDHOOD

While money is a numbers game and can be seen to be very black and white, it’s more emotionally driven for many adults. Developing a positive money mindset and learning to handle money in a healthy way gives your kid more than just budgeting skills. You can help build an eventual pathway to financial freedom, while also confident decision making, goal setting and a positive lifelong relationship with money. You don’t have to go all in on making money and finance a core topic in your house, but you can take small age-appropriate steps that help alleviate confusion and negativity surrounding money.

BUILDING MONEY BLOCKS THAT LAST

It’s a common misconception that topics like budgeting or saving are too advanced for most young kids. The same way we introduce manners or healthy eating, we can teach basic concepts of money management that will grow more advanced over time as they get bigger.

Brainstorm goals together for their money such as buying a new toy they’ve been wanting or donating to a conservation for their favorite animal. This can help them begin to value planning, patience and purpose around money.

SAVINGS GOALS TOGETHER AS A FAMILY. 2 SET When things are done as a family, there’s something

special about seeing the progress together! Maybe your teen is saving up for their first car or your little one wants to go to Disney World? Create a tangible savings goal, so they can see budgeting and saving in action! Talk about breaking their goal into smaller goals, and maybe even offer to match their savings to encourage them. You can even create a tracker to place on your fridge for them to see progress on what’s adding up!

THEM IN GROCERY SHOPPING. 3 INVOLVE Everyone in your household eats the food, so why

not make your kids feel involved in what goes into purchasing it? Not only does this help provide a sense of pride but also instills a real world adult skill they’ll need for life. Next grocery store visit, give your child a specific list of items they are in charge of and a small budget. Walk them through how to check prices, compare different brands and make decisions on what they buy. This can help give firsthand experience on how budgeting shows up in your life.

You aren’t trying to raise the next CFO or CPA, but helping your kids see money as a tool they respect but don’t necessarily stress over is important.

Smoked Mac and Cheese Prep Time: 20 minutes | Cook Time: 1.5 hours Yields: 15-20 servings This side dish pairs great for any summer cookout. Rich and creamy!

Ingredients: 1 Pound Ground Beef 1 box large elbow macaroni 4 cups of milk 1 block softened cream cheese 1 stick of butter 1 small container of heavy whipping cream 2 pounds of shredded cheese (I used Colby Jack and cheddar) 3T salt, pepper, garlic ¼ cup crushed pork rinds First, fire up your smoker and make sure the temperature is up to 275 degrees. I cooked this on my Big Green Egg, but you can use a pellet smoker if you prefer.

Put one box of elbow macaroni in an aluminum foil pan. Add all ingredients together in the pan and mix. Put it on the smoker for about an hour and a half, and make sure you stir it every 15-20 minutes so it will thicken up.

After an hour and a half, take it off the smoker, add a half pound of shredded cheese on top and crush up pork rinds. Put it back on the smoker for 10-15 minutes to let everything melt together. Enjoy!

This is a heavy and rich mac and cheese. If you do not need a big pan of it, you can cut the recipe in half for a smaller portion. Use the same temperature if you are cooking over charcoal or on a pellet grill.

You can top with breadcrumbs or pork rinds. I like the flavor of the pork rinds better. Also, use your favorite cheese. Shredding a block of cheese versus buying the bag is better because it melts better.

This is the newest aquatic park in Forsyth County as it opened in May of 2018. It’s a great stop for water fun and a relaxing cool down on a hot summer day. There is a large zero entry water playground that features a small slide and massive bucket that dumps water. Those looking to relax a little will enjoy the lazy river.

The pool features a large, winding water slide. Requirements for the slide include 48” tall and a green wristband which is obtained by successfully completing the facility’s swim test. This swim test requires swimming 25 yards continuously and treading water for one minute without assistance.

July is here, and you might already feel like you’ve run out of ways to entertain the kids at home and maybe even in WinstonSalem. If that sounds familiar, you will love July’s hidden gem!

On the northern side of Forsyth County sits the quiet little town of Rural Hall. Inside Rural Hall is one of our county’s best kept secrets – Covington Memorial Park. This park is perfect if you are looking for somewhere new to explore and play in a not overly crowded destination.

WHY VISIT COVINGTON MEMORIAL PARK?

One of the best things about this park is how peaceful and quiet it is!

Plus, it has some great amenities.

The playground and picnic shelter are right by one of the parking lots, making them very convenient for families. There are two playgrounds, one for smaller kids and one for older kids, and both are fenced in separately but with a gate between the two.

Inside the little kids’ playground, you’ll find swings meant for babies and toddlers and a small play structure that has a slide. In the playground for older kids, there is a swingset and larger play structure with multiple slides and climbing opportunities.

Right beside the playground is a medium-sized picnic shelter with plenty of seating. There are also picnic tables outside the shelter.

You’ll find the bathroom here, and unlike many park bathrooms, they are relatively clean and well maintained. You can rent the shelter for parties for a fee.

One beautiful feature of this park you can see from both the picnic shelter and playgrounds is a small lake. There is a trail that wraps around the entire side of the lake closest to the park that offers several benches. You can’t swim or go in the lake, but it’s fun watching the many, many turtles.

This park has tennis courts and a basketball court fenced in the same area and has lighting for nighttime games. On the other side of these courts is a baseball field which can be rented out.

While this park might seem a little out of the way, the tranquility and slow pace (as well as no crowds) make it a must visit spot in Forsyth County for families. It certainly has earned itself the hidden gem status!

WHY VISIT IN JULY?

Anytime of year is, of course, gorgeous in this area, but July turns up the entertainment value in Linville. That’s all thanks to the annual Grandfather Mountain Highland Games (GMHG)! This family friendly event has everything from, yes Scottish games, to Celtic entertainment, children’s activities and even sheepdog demonstrations.

Stephen Quillin, president of the GMHG, shares a little history about the games. “The first Grandfather Mountain Highland Games were the product of a collaboration between Agnes MacRae Morton and Donald F. MacDonald. They were held on August 19, 1956 to coincide with the August 19, 1745 Raising of his Standard by Bonnie Prince Charlie at Glenfinnan, Scotland. The Games were a one-day affair in 1956 and 1957, and moved to a two-day festival held the second full weekend in July in 1958 before shifting to the current four-day format.

The Grandfather Mountain Highland Games has steadily increased in size and stature from its humble beginning. It is now the largest gathering of Scottish families in the world.”

Mistakes to Avoid When Taking Children on Vacation

A vacation is an opportunity to relax and spend quality time with people you love and care about. On the vacations we spend with our children, we want to make them fun for adults and children, and a key to that fun is avoiding mistakes that hinder us from having enjoyable vacation memories. Here are seven mistakes to avoid when planning to take your children on a vacation that just might save you from regretting the trip.

THE TRIP IS NOT AGE APPROPRIATE – Even though

a trip might seem like a good idea, depending on the age of the child, it may underwhelm or overwhelm them. For youngsters, you may want to avoid too much walking if you are not able to easily use a stroller or if the trip involves hiking up hills. For older children, you want to meet their expectations.

I once had to cancel a trip to an amusement park because I did not have anyone to accompany us who likes to ride rollercoasters, and I knew I was absolutely not willing to ride them. Consider that rides at amusement parks will have height requirements. It will be a big disappointment to spend money if your child is not able to participate in most of the rides.

NOT PLANNING FOR “ME” TIME – Bring a sitter or a nanny. You may want alone time, couple time or time to spend with your children of various ages at separate times. Consider hiring a sitter or nanny to accompany you on the trip. This way, young children can stay at the toddler parks, or you can have special time with younger children and then special time with older children.

NOT BUDGETING FOR THE MISCELLANEOUS – Bring some themed items ahead of time. For example, special cups or light up trinkets for the evenings that go along with the theme of the place you are visiting. These items purchased at the vacation spot might be quite expensive, and you can save that money for more important parts of the trip with planning.

Oriental Trading and the Dollar Store can be much cheaper for these types of items, and the money saved can help purchase food, excursions or upgrades. In addition, you might be able to avoid the disappointment your little one will have if they see these things, but you cannot purchase them.

FORGETTING TO PACK FOR CONVENIENCE –

Be creative on the strollers or backpacks. There are lots of packing methods and materials that can help you travel lighter and more organized. Organize so you can carry less and, as a result, be less likely to lose something on the trip. Also, check with your mode of travel on acceptable suitcase sizes or carry ons such as foods and liquids.

PLAN FOR THE TRAVEL – Have games ready for the

ride. Card games are great, and you can even make up some of your own, but try to avoid screen time as much as you can. It is much easier to transition the big and little people in your group to move onto the next thing when screen time is not what they are transitioning from.

WEARING THE WRONG SHOES – Please, if you care about your feet, do not wear flip flops. They are terrible if you will be walking a lot and terrible for children on vacation because they cannot move and run freely without worry of the flip flops coming off. You might not feel the pain on day one, but the next morning, your feet will be in pain.

BEING EXHAUSTED ON VACATION – Remember to plan a rest day. In our excitement during the planning process, we believe we will want to see and do everything. However, we must consider that both adults and children get tired and, even if they put a nap off one day, two or three days with no rest is not realistic. No rest will make it difficult to enjoy the vacation because being tired can cause children and adults alike to be cranky. So, for the benefit of everyone, rest!

It’s a Grand Grand Life All About My Grands!

Last month, my husband and I had a whirlwind three days that was the start to our grandchildren’s summer vacation. It started with our granddaughter’s spring ballet recital. Her dance studio put on the ballet of Sleeping Beauty, which was beautifully staged and costumed, with scenery changes that were perfect. The recital started at 4:00 p.m. and wasn’t over until 7:00 p.m. Our granddaughter was in the final act. This would not have been an issue if it weren’t for the fact that we had to drive to Charlotte the minute it was over. Why, you might ask?

Our eldest grandson was graduating from middle school the next morning. He and his siblings have attended Trinity Episcopal School from kindergarten, and we have attended every important event they have been involved in, but this, obviously, was the one that meant the most to Jack. We made it to Charlotte a little after 10:00 p.m., spent a few minutes unwinding with our daughter and granddaughter, then unpacked what we needed for the next day. It was a wonderful ceremony. Along with his parents, sister and his three sets of grandparents, we took up an entire row of seats. Even his brother, who will move up to middle school, was asked to carry in the American flag.

That night, while Jack and his parents attended a graduation party, we were able to take our granddaughter, Ella, and grandson, Hudson, out to dinner. It is wonderful to have that one-on-one time with each of

them. Ella is entering her senior year in high school which is so hard to believe; those years have seemed to fly by.

Hudson, entering middle school, even though it’s the same school, will experience so many changes that I know he’ll want to talk about. The three siblings are very close, and I know that when Ella leaves for college, it will be hard on the boys not to have her around.

Being fortunate to have two, and soon to be four, of the seven grandchildren living across the street from us, means so very much. Having them greet me with bear hugs and kisses every time they see me makes my heart soar. Even when I stay with them, I try to do my best in abiding by their parents’ rules. Knowing that it is for the best, I still don’t like having to raise my voice or be firm when it is time for them to go to bed. However, after stalling at first, like every child does, they do listen. All my grandchildren have been raised to be respectful, know they are expected to abide by certain rules, be kind, giving and strong in faith.

I was fortunate to have wonderful, loving, supportive parents who were always there for my sister and me. We never wanted to disappoint them, and I don’t think we ever did.

My one regret was not living closer to my grandparents.

They were four amazing people who I loved dearly even though I only got to see them every summer when we went to Texas to visit. I am so glad that is not the way it is for my grands. I hope that they will look back when talking to their children about their Gigi and Pabo, and wonderful memories of us will be tales they tell.

Hopefully, I have many more years to make more and more of those memories. I look forward to watching each of them as they grow from child to adult. Where will life take them?

What path will they follow leading to a career? I know they have parents who have taught and raised them well. Yes, I am a very proud Gigi with a heart filled with love and pride of these fantastic seven grandchildren. Be careful, if you ask me about my grandchildren, be prepared for a long oration!

9:30am-4:30pm, Little Theatre of W-S. We’ll explore the fast-paced quick wit of sketch comedy. Sketch comedy takes the everyday and finds the humor in it.

Campers will hone their comedic timing as they explore this fun genre. A Sketch Showcase will be held at the end of the week. Campers will learn self-expression, empathy, comedic timing and discipline.

JULY 27 CHINESE CALLIGRAPHY WORKSHOP

2-4pm, Lam Museum of Anthropology.

Join artist Mona Wu at the Lam Museum to explore the history of the Chinese language and the art of calligraphy.

After a short discussion, participants will practice brush strokes used to create Chinese characters. Participants will have the opportunity to paint a scroll that includes images and Chinese calligraphy.

Designed for adults ages 18 and up. The fee is $25 per participant ($20 for Lam Museum members). Space is limited, and advanced registration is required.

The View from My Section – A Father’s Perspective

One Night in DC

This is a story about a young couple’s journey that began with a chance encounter in college, and a relationship that flourished from best friends to something more long lasting. As their bond grew closer, the young man felt the time had come to make their commitment official. The only obstacle as a student being his limited finances. So, he set out to create a marriage proposal on a shoestring budget. After working during breaks in classes for a year and spending all his money to purchase a ring on layaway from the jewelry store in the mall, there was nothing left for the grand proposal. He would need to improvise.

In their brief talks about the idea of a proposal in the future, she emphasized to him that, because she only planned to experience this moment once in her lifetime, she had three special requests.

First, she wanted him to pick a time when she was dressed appropriately and not just wearing sweatpants and a t-shirt. Secondly, she wanted him to make sure it would be recorded through video and/or pictures in some way, so that her family could share in it later. Lastly, she wanted to be surprised in a way that only he could do.

After careful thought and deliberation, he wanted the moment to be so perfect that he experienced proposal-block instead.

He decided it would be better to approach it organically until the timing felt just right.

He began by creating a video featuring the engagement ring as the main character. For nearly a year, the ring secretly traveled to places special to them. It rested among the flowers in the shadow of the iconic Clock Tower at Western Carolina University, where she studied, and toured the landmarks on NC State’s campus, where he attended. Their friends, who all vowed to keep the secret, posed for photos with it. The ring accompanied them to concerts, festivals and even the beach during vacation. Their families saw it, too, offering their blessings for the union.

During this time, an opportunity arose: a Student Government Conference in Washington, DC, taking place over the summer break. The city held sentimental value for them, sharing fond memories of special events in the recent past. The conference offered the perfect setting, and best of all, their hotel and meals were covered.

On the final night of the conference, his plan was set in motion. They attended an elegant dinner requiring cocktail attire, fulfilling her first request. Earlier that day, he secretly shared his idea with their new friends from Texas A&M University and her conference roommate, asking for their help capturing the proposal through pictures and video, checking off her second request. Lastly, they would be the ones to suggest the evening tour after dinner, making it appear spontaneous.

Check off her final request, and the list is complete. They were all very excited to be a part of something special.

After dinner, the night progressed perfectly, and she remained blissfully unaware as their group explored DC’s landmarks. They passed the White House and took in the Washington Monument, finally arriving at the Reflecting Pool beneath the Lincoln Memorial. He gave a subtle nod to the others, and they all grouped together a few feet away and had their cameras ready. He then turned gently towards her and, just as planned, the moment unfolded. One friend approached her with a handwritten note. Confused, she read the message. Another friend handed her a second note. Again, she was shocked because only the couple knew the importance of these messages. Then another. In total, she received six notes, all written in his handwriting. As she read the final one, her eyes welled with tears.

He bent down on one knee and opened the ring box, revealing the treasure he had carried all this time. Speaking softly, he conveyed his heartfelt words while a crowd of tourists gathered around to

“I never knew I needed you, before I found you for the first time.” ~ Finneas witness. Then, unexpectedly, in a most precious moment, she sank to her knees as well, staring deeply into his eyes. As he finished his proposal, she answered with an immediate “Yes!” and leapt into his arms. Their new Aggie friends and the crowd of bystanders erupted in simultaneous cheers of joy and delight for them.

Under the moonlit sky, with stars shining above, the gentle light of the Reflecting Pool, and the Washington Monument softly glowing in the distance, beneath the watchful gaze of Abraham Lincoln, this moment instantly became an unforgettable memory of love and commitment.

Their wedding date was still a year away (after graduation), but this one night in DC would be one they would cherish forever.

The happy couple happens to be my son and his new fiancée. Victorian Poet Robert Browning once said, “When children find true love, parents find true joy.” Here’s to your joy and ours, from this day forward. Congratulations to you both!
