There’s something magical about July. Long days, lake breezes, fireworks, and front porch conversations that stretch late into the evening. Summer has a way of making time slow down just enough to let us catch our breath—and look around at all the good that surrounds us.
This month feels extra special as I reflect on one of the most meaningful moments in my life—our daughter’s wedding on May 31st. Above is one of my favorite images of my family from that day. You’ll find a more photos of this unforgettable day on page 50. It was a beautiful reminder of how deeply rooted

For Mariah McDaniel, art has always been more than just an act of creation. It is a deeply personal dialogue between memory, nature and meaning. Her journey as an artist began in the warmth of her grandmother’s home, where paints and fabric scraps lived side by side with patience and love. From painting oyster shells to designing handpainted tote bags for family vacations, those formative years instilled in her a sense of wonder and care that now echoes throughout her intricate resin and botanical preservation work.
“My maternal grandmother was incredibly creative,” Mariah shares. “She gave me the kind of gentle encouragement that made me feel like anything I made had value.” Whether they were painting velvet fabric sheets or sewing together, creativity was a shared ritual, a kind of sacred inheritance that would later shape Mariah’s artistic path in unexpected ways.
Though her early years were filled with craft and color, it was not until a ukulele-building collaboration with a luthier friend that her fascination with resin truly took root. Wanting to embed real flowers and four-leaf clovers into the instrument’s rosette, Mariah began experimenting with epoxy resin, a process that sparked an entirely new direction in her work. “That project got me so inspired that I paused work on the ukulele altogether,” she laughs. “My mind was spinning with all the ways I could use preserved plants in my art.”
Since late 2019, Mariah has immersed herself in resin work, blending pressed botanicals, natural elements like semi-precious stones and metal findings into one-of-a-kind jewelry, accessories and keepsakes. Her studio, a calm and meticulous space, is lined with shallow bins of flowers in various stages of preservation, stacks of thrifted books hiding pressed blooms between parchment and all the tools of the trade from jeweler’s saws to PPE gear. “Safety is a big part of my routine,” she explains, noting the care needed to work with resin and silica.
Each day in the studio begins with checking on pieces left to cure and setting up for the day’s tasks, whether that is crafting new resin blocks for bouquet preservation, shaping embellishments or drying a client’s fresh flowers. Podcasts and audiobooks on psychology, astrology and spirituality often fill the air, offering inspiration as she works.
Mariah’s pieces are deeply intuitive. While commissioned work follows a more structured plan, her personal creations often evolve in the moment. “There’s a lot of unpredictability when working with resin and botanicals,” she
says. “No two flowers behave exactly the same which can be frustrating but also magical. Nature always has the final word.”
Themes of memory, emotion and connection run through all of Mariah’s work. Whether preserving a wedding bouquet or crafting a unique piece of jewelry, she approaches each project with reverence. “It’s a privilege to be trusted with something so meaningful,” she reflects. Her love for timeless fashion and interest in human stories, how people live, love and find meaning, find quiet expression in the work she creates.
Mariah’s personal history also deeply informs her work. That early connection to handmade keepsakes explains her passion for preserving meaningful objects in resin. “It’s a way of honoring memory and emotion through art which makes the process feel very personal.” She often finds inspiration in everything from the shape of Victorian-era jewelry to abstract combinations of colors that simply resonate with her spirit.
Right now, Mariah is especially excited about her “spills” – organically shaped resin sheets that serve as coasters, wall hangings or table runners. “They take on a life of their own,” she says, noting how she has them placed throughout her home. She is also looking forward to some upcoming pop-up shops this summer and is currently crafting a special necklace for a friend, something she calls “one of my favorite ways to create.”
When asked about success, Mariah speaks not of accolades or sales, though those matter, too, but of flow. “When I’m really in it, completely focused and centered, that’s when I feel successful,” she says. “It feeds my well being and keeps me grounded.”
To young artists, she offers a piece of hard won wisdom: “Try everything that excites you. Don’t let your inner critic or anyone else limit what you explore. Inspiration is part of a bigger exchange. We’re always borrowing and giving back to the creative energy around us.”
It’s that deep connection to nature, to people and to the creative process that makes Mariah’s work not just beautiful but soulfully resonant, as well. In every preserved petal and shimmering resin curve, there is memory, intention and the quiet artistry of someone who sees and honors the small, sacred details of life.

By STEVEN GALLO, CFP®, FINANCIAL ADVISOR
Discussing finances with aging parents can be challenging. As a result, many families delay these conversations or avoid them altogether, which can lead to unexpected financial surprises, misunderstandings, and conflicts.
By talking openly about money, you ensure both their future and yours are secure, prevent potential disputes, and assist in planning for long-term care. The goal of this conversation is to understand their financial situation, ensure financial stability, and facilitate smooth estate planning.
Parents who have accumulated wealth over the years may resist the idea of needing help managing their money. It is important to be mindful of your language and positioning. Avoid saying, “I need to know how much money you have” or “You shouldn’t do this by yourself.” Instead, use more delicate ways to broach the subject:
1. SEGUE FROM A BROADER TOPIC
Start by finding common ground, such as discussing recent market conditions or rising healthcare costs. This can naturally lead to conversations about the health of their investments and any concerns they might have about their retirement savings. The initial goal is to make them comfortable with the broader discussion before moving on to more sensitive topics.
*Example Script:* “Have you been following what’s going on in the financial markets?” or “I read so much about the cost of healthcare. What’s been your experience lately?”
2. INQUIRE ABOUT THEIR FINANCIAL ADVISOR
Mention that you work closely with your advisor and that you’re curious about their experience with theirs. This allows you to gauge the depth of their relationship, frequency of contact, and trust in recommendations.
*Example Script:* “I’ve been meaning to ask you, how do you like your financial
advisor?” or “What has your advisor been telling you lately?”
3. BLAME IT ON YOUR FINANCIAL ADVISOR
If bringing up the topic feels too personal, use your financial advisor as a reason for the conversation. This can reduce some of the discomfort, as most financial advisors agree that family financial discussions are beneficial.
*Example Script:* “My financial advisor suggested that it’s a good idea for families to discuss their financial plans. Would you be open to going over the basics together?”
4. INQUIRE ABOUT THE HANDLING OF THEIR ESTATE
If you end up playing a direct role in executing their estate, you have an interest
in ensuring things are well thought-out and coordinated. Even so, frame this in their interests, not yours.
*Example Script:* “I read so much about estate planning and what can go wrong. Do you feel good about your plans?” or “If you don’t mind me asking, how recently have you updated your estate plan?”
Approaching the money conversation with empathy, timing, and a collaborative mindset can make this easier for everyone involved. Start small and gradually move towards more detailed conversations. This works best when discussed over multiple conversations. Simply initiating the dialogue can often be the hardest part.

Evenings can be busy times, no matter what schedule you have. You may be tired, coming home after a long day of work or your kids have practices, games and events. Then there are the errands and things you need to complete in order to get ready for tomorrow. Time passes by quickly and hopefully, during that time, you can get a moment or two to relax. The last thing on your mind is preparing dinner. Even with meal planning and prepping, you want something quick and easy. The solution is 10 Minute Dinners – meals that cook in 10 minutes or less.
SPINACH SHRIMP FETTUCCINE
Serves: 8
Ingredients:
• 1 pound uncooked fettuccine
• 1 6-oz. package of baby spinach
• 2 tablespoons olive oil
• 4 garlic cloves, minced
• 1 pound uncooked shrimp, peeled and deveined
• 2 medium tomatoes, chopped
• 1/2 teaspoon Italian seasoning
• 1/4 teaspoon salt
• 1/4 cup shredded Parmesan cheese
Directions:
1. In a medium pan, bring water to a boil. Cook the fettuccine according to the directions on the package.
2. In a large skillet, saute spinach in olive oil for two minutes or until leaves wilt. Add in garlic and cook for one more minute.
3. Combine the shrimp, tomatoes, Italian seasoning and salt to the spinach. Saute for two to three minutes or until shrimp is done.
4. Drain the fettuccine and add to the rest of the ingredients.
5. Sprinkle the mixture with cheese.
10 Minute Dinners are recipes that can be prepared ahead of time and mixed together right before you would like to eat. Then, in a few minutes, dinner is served. I want to make a quick disclaimer – these meals take more time to prepare and combine ingredients, but the cooking time is 10 minutes or less, hence the name “10 Minute Dinners.” Because, let’s be honest, a person would have to have lightning fast speed to cut up ingredients, mix them together and cook everything in such a short time.
Sounds good to you but don’t know where to start? Try these recipes below to see how they work for you and your busy evenings.
Serves: 4
Ingredients:
• 1 green apple, quartered and thinly sliced
• 1 cucumber, thinly sliced
• 1/4 small red onion, thinly sliced
• 2 tablespoons fresh dill
• 1/2 cup lime and chili vinaigrette
• 2 cooked chicken breasts, shredded
• 1/2 cup barbecue sauce
• 4 burger buns
• Chipotle aioli
• Salad leaves
Directions:
1. Combine apple, cucumber and onion in a bowl. Mix in the dill and drizzle with the vinaigrette. Season with salt and pepper. Toss all ingredients together. Set aside.
2. In a large frying pan, cook chicken over medium to high heat for two minutes or until done.
3. Add BBQ sauce, 1/4 cup water, salt and pepper. Cook for two more minutes until the sauce thickens and chicken is coated. Remove from heat.
4. On a plate, top the burger buns with chicken and apple mixture. Drizzle with the Chipotle aioli and salad leaves.
PAN COOKED PIZZA
Serves: One
This recipe can be altered to add flavors that fit your taste.
Ingredients:
• 1 thin pre-made pizza base
• 2 teaspoons olive oil
• 1/2 cup tomato and basil pasta sauce
• 2 tablespoons salted capers, rinsed and drained
• 2 tablespoons basil pesto
• 4 slices thin prosciutto
• Mozzarella cheese
• Basil leaves
Directions:
1. Brush your pizza base with oil on both sides. Then, in a large frypan, over medium heat, place your pizza base upside down. Cover with a lid and cook for two minutes. Flip over and cook for another two minutes.
2. Spread the pasta sauce over the base. Add mozzarella and capers. Cover the frypan with the lid, and reduce the heat to low. Cook for five to six minutes until the cheese is melted. Remove from the pan.
3. Add the pesto, prosciutto and basil leaves.
10 Minute Dinners will save you time at night and allow you more time to do what you enjoy. Soon, they will become your new best friend, and you won’t remember what you did before them. Enjoy!

Just walking through a seemingly ordinary spot in downtown Mooresville, you’re unexpectedly drawn in by a splash of vivid color – the newest mural at the back entrance of Juelerye’s building. You stumble upon this stunning new work by Esther Moorehead, a hidden treasure quietly waiting to be discovered.
At Juelerye, their motto says it all: Enter curious. Depart delighted.
The mural is exactly that kind of experience. At first, it surprises you –a vibrant invitation sparking your curiosity. But, when you step inside Juelerye’s walls, the full picture comes into view. You begin to see the layers of meaning woven throughout – the stories, symbols and connections that transform the mural from imagery to a vibrant story.
In line with E.B. White’s timeless wisdom – “Always be on the lookout for the presence of wonder” – the mural was created in collaboration with artist Esther Moorehead as a thoughtful expression of beauty, healing and belonging.
Continued on page 36.
Continued from page 35.
At its heart are eucalyptus leaves and branching forms, symbols of healing and connection that mirror how Juelerye weaves intention into every corner of its space.
Nestled among the branches are azaleas, deeply rooted in southern tradition, speaking to belonging and resilience; peonies, soft and slow to open, reminding us that true beauty unfolds over time – the same care Juelerye pours into curating its artists and collections.
White dogwood blossoms pay homage to North Carolina, tiny blue forget-me-nots whisper of memory and devotion, and cheerful billy buttons spark moments of joy and spontaneity. Each element was chosen with the intention to create a rich, living story.
The birds add movement and life – a cardinal symbolizes enduring love and remembrance; two bluebirds represent shared joy; a yellow warbler flits as a messenger of everyday delight; and a
blue tit mid-flight encourages courage and transformation – a leap into possibility.
With her vividly bold yet playful style, Esther infuses every brushstroke and stunning color choice with intention and life, transforming the mural into a dynamic visual story that elegantly reflects Juelerye’s spirit within our community.
What started as a genuine effort to brighten a quiet corner has blossomed into a space that invites curiosity and connection to all who see it. If you find yourself downtown, take this as your personal invite to stop in and stay a while. Because this mural is more than just art – it’s a gentle reminder to stay curious, to look closer and to uncover creativity that quietly waits.

E.B. WHITE, American Writer
North Carolina in the heat of July is the right place to be. From the salty shores where the Atlantic kisses the sand to the cool mountain hollers where the mist dances through ancient trees, the Tar Heel State serves up summer adventures sweeter than pecan pie and twice as satisfying.
The Outer Banks stretch out like a string of pearls along 200 miles of barrier islands, each one holding centuries of maritime tales. That Cape Hatteras Lighthouse stands tall as you please at 208 feet, a testament to good old-fashioned engineering that’s been guiding sailors’ home since the 1800s. Climbing those 257 steps might leave you huffing and puffing like a steam engine, but the panoramic views across the Atlantic Ocean and Pamlico Sound are worth every blessed step.
Over at Jockey’s Ridge State Park, the tallest natural sand dunes on the East Coast rise up to 100 feet high, shifting and changing with the seasons like a restless spirit. These golden hills offer perfect conditions for hang-gliding that’ll have your heart racing faster than a greyhound chasing a rabbit. The dunes also provide prime real estate for sandboarding and sunset photography that’ll make your Instagram followers green with envy.
The culinary offerings here are finer than a frog’s hair split four ways. Fresh seafood pulled straight from these waters finds its way onto plates still warm from the kitchen, with shrimp and grits leading the charge like a Southern comfort food parade.
Up in the western mountains, where the air runs cooler than a cucumber and twice as refreshing, Pisgah National Forest holds court with over 250 waterfalls. Each cascade tells its own story, carved by millennia of flowing water through ancient granite and gneiss formations that have stood since before time had a name.
Dupont State Recreational Forest has earned itself quite the reputation, featuring iconic falls like Triple Falls and High Falls that Hollywood deemed pretty enough for the silver screen. These mountain pools stay

refreshingly cool year-round, offering natural swimming holes that provide relief from summer heat better than any air conditioning unit ever could.
The geological diversity means each waterfall presents its own personality—from the mighty 411-foot plunge of Whitewater Falls that’ll leave you speechless to the gentle cascades of Crabtree Falls that whisper sweet nothings as they tumble over moss-covered rocks.
North Carolina’s moonshine heritage runs deeper than a well in July, particularly in those Appalachian hollers where corn-based distillation became both economic necessity and cultural tradition. Wilkes County earned its stripes as the “moonshine capital of the world” during Prohibition, when local distillers perfected their craft in hidden mountain coves.
Today’s legal distilleries honor this heritage while offering flavors that range from traditional clear corn liquor that’ll put hair on your chest to fruit-infused varieties featuring mountain apples and wild berries that taste like summer in a mason jar. The Great Smoky Mountains region has embraced this cultural tourism with open arms, offering educational tours that explain the historical significance and traditional production methods passed down through generations.
North Carolina’s diverse topography provides camping experiences that range from beachfront sites where ocean waves provide nature’s own lullaby to mountain locations where elevation creates surprisingly cool summer evenings. With over 40 park locations scattered across the state, each site offers unique natural features and recreational opportunities that’ll keep you busier than a long-tailed cat in a room full of rocking chairs.
Coastal camping allows for sunrise beach walks and evening fishing, while mountain sites provide access to hiking trails and some of the darkest night skies this side of heaven. Lake camping combines water recreation with forest settings, creating perfect conditions for swimming, kayaking, and wildlife observation.
North Carolina’s summer attractions reflect the state’s remarkable geographical diversity, creating microclimates and ecosystems that support different recreational opportunities within a relatively compact area. This blessed state ensures authentic adventures that honor the past while embracing outdoor recreation possibilities sweeter than molasses on a warm biscuit.

Summer is here and the heat has been turned up! Before you grab your electrolyte drink or soda, make sure you check the label. Is it truly hydrating you or making you more thirsty? And are you drinking extra calories that your body doesn’t need?
The average woman needs around 8-11 cups of fluids a day. You may need more or less, depending on you as an individual. Stop and think about what you’ve had to drink today. Will you get to 11 cups and what were your cups filled with? They were probably not all water. Water is the most important fluid to use for hydration, but let’s be realistic, we all want some flavor throughout the day too, right? A can of soda can contain around 8-10 teaspoons of sugar. And an electrolyte bottle can contain 11 teaspoons of sugar. Would you normally take 10-11 teaspoons of sugar and add that to your water? Probably not, although some of you may be adding that much to your cup of coffee!
A teaspoon of sugar is equal to 4.2 grams of sugar on the nutrition label. Check out your refrigerator to see what the nutrition content of your drinks looks like. When we drink our calories, we do not feel “full” and therefore the calories you are getting from sugary drinks can add up quickly, causing you to possibly carry extra weight. So what can
you drink that has flavor but not all of the calories? The good news is that there are some low-sugar options in the store and some ideas you can make at home!
There are flavored drinks that use artificial sweeteners to give them a sweet flavor. Artificial sweeteners can be listed under several different names which includes sucralose, Splenda, aspartame, Equal, Saccharin, Sweet’N Low, NutraSweet, Truvia and more. Remember, the additive is artificial so even though it’s not extra sugar, it’s still an artificial substance going into your body. Be wise and drink these in moderation, just like with sugary drinks!
Artificially sweetened examples: Propel, Gatorade Zero, diet sodas, Sparkling Ice, Mio and more
CARBONATED WATERS:
There are sparkling, carbonated waters that have natural flavors and sweetness added, but without sugar or sugar-substitutes. These provide less flavor than other canned and bottled drinks, but are an option if you need a little more flavor than plain water!
Sparkling water examples: Bubly, La Croix, Spindrift, Pelligrino, Poland Spring and more HOMEMADE OPTIONS:
You can always flavor your water before you walk out of the door for the day! Any fresh fruit and even some vegetables, cut into pieces or slices, can make your water taste great! They even make water bottles that have an infusion area inside to place your produce. The most popular fruits and vegetables to infuse into water are oranges, lemons, strawberries, mint and cucumber. It also makes your water look fancy! Do them alone or pair them together to try new flavors for your water.
If you focus on drinking a combination of fluids throughout the day, not just one type, you will stay hydrated without too many calories going in! Check out the nutrition labels in your home and at the store next time you go grocery shopping. You can even have a taste testing night to see if there are any new options on the shelves that you enjoy! Stay hydrated and healthy!

The other day, I circled back around to one of my favorite books: the heart of the buddha’s teaching (lower case, yes) by Thich Nhat Hanh. You may know it. It’s back on my Sunday reading cycle as it’s been quite a few years since I’ve read it.
With a view to three dappled dogwood trees, I settled into my reading chair. A ragged newspaper clipping fluttered out, light as a butterfly’s wing. A makeshift bookmark, of course. My curious eyes went to the faded print and I paused:
“The ‘five secrets’...that underlie a healthy relationship or marriage:
• Hear and understand me.
• Even if you disagree, please don’t make me wrong.
• Acknowledge the greatness within me.
• Remember to look for my loving intentions.
• Tell me the truth with compassion.”
Wow. Timeless. But why had I made a point of holding onto this bit of wisdom? Of course, I couldn’t recall. Maybe because it was timeless and applied to all relationships that matter deeply. My mind couldn’t help but go to my Woman Tribe; regardless of how or where we met, some connection deeper than shared experience or circumstance connected us. Without exception, these ways of being and relating were alive and well. Foundational, intentional, sustainable, but not always perfect. I was reminded of budding friendships that were filled with potential and others that withered or soured unexpectedly. Almost always, I sensed one or more of these dynamics in play:
By JEAN MARIE JOHNSON
• Not hearing me and denying the validity of my voice.
• Making me wrong and setting up a win-lose.
• Minimizing my greatness, being dismissive.
• Ignoring my intentions; not allowing a space for my mistakes.
• Speaking without compassion, chipping away at the love between us.
Do the “five secrets” make a relationship endure? More specifically, what makes a female friendship ground itself and flourish? Yes, of course that GF of yours puts a crown on your head, tells you that you don’t look fat in those jeans, and otherwise makes you feel special. It’s all good. But when she’s really there for you, she knows how to be present with you, to you, and for you – through everything. And you know how to do the same for her.
When we put those five “secrets” into practice, something extraordinarily enduring happens:
• I can be who I am and you can be who you are.
• I don’t try to change you and you don’t try to change me.
• We accept that sometimes, our “stuff” will get in the way.
• We love and cherish one another because of ... and in spite of.... fill in the invisible blanks!
As I drew in the beauty of the dogwoods, it occurred to me that friendship is about a humble and authentic faithfulness, not perfection. Then I brought that consciousness to the Buddha’s teaching to see what I could glean.

These festive chocolate-covered pretzel rods are dipped in creamy white chocolate, sprinkled with red, white, and blue, and make the perfect sweet-and-salty treat for any patriotic celebration.
Servings: 8
Prep time: 10 minutes
Total time: 10 minutes
Ingredients:
• 1 cup white chocolate chips
• 8 pretzel rods
• Red, white, and blue sprinkles
For more recipes and nutrition tips, head over to the Be Well Table blog.
Instructions:
1. Add the white chocolate chips to a microwave-safe bowl. Microwave in 20-30 second increments, stirring between each, until smooth and fully melted.
2. Holding each pretzel rod by one end, dip it into the melted white chocolate, covering about half to two-thirds of the rod. Let the extra chocolate drip off.
3. While the chocolate is still wet, hold the pretzel over a plate and sprinkle the red, white, and blue sprinkles all over the chocolate-coated part. Rotate the pretzel to get all sides.
4. Place the pretzels on a parchment-lined baking sheet. Let them sit at room temperature until the chocolate hardens or pop them in the fridge for 10–15 minutes to speed things up.
5. Once set, they’re ready to eat. Great for parties, cookouts, or just a sweet-salty snack.

The picture of positivity and the very definition of dedication, rising senior and Bandys High School standout athlete, Raelle Brown, learned the importance of personal goals at a young age.
“My parents, Wes and Michelle Brown, have always been my biggest inspiration. Growing up, I watched them put 100 percent into everything they did, no matter how tired or busy they were,” Rae shares. “They’ve made countless sacrifices to support me and my goals, and seeing their work ethic has taught me what real dedication looks like. I carry that with me every day, no matter if I’m at practice, in a meet or just trying to push through a tough day. I never want to let them down – and I always put my full effort into everything I do.”
Most recently, that maximum effort has earned her 3rd Place at the NCHSAA 2A State Championships – in both the 300-meter hurdles and her 4x400 meter relay!
She previously set new school records in the 100-meter hurdles and as anchor of that 4x400m Relay team. Rae was also named MVP of the Catawba County Championship Meet, earned the title 2025 CVAC Conference Sprinter of the Year and helped lead the Lady Trojans to 1st Place team victories at every championship meet. Also a Bandys High School cheerleader, she carried a 4.425 GPA in her junior year, earning academic awards as well. Her impeccable work ethic has brought many accolades on the track, in the classroom and as a teammate, for which she is grateful.
Continued on page 58.
Continued from page 56.
“Heading into my senior year, I look forward to making every moment of my final year meaningful. I hope to finish high school having made a positive impact on my peers, plus being someone younger grades can look up to,” she adds.
Rae also cherishes the amazing bond she shares with her track teammates.
“We’ve been through hard practices after long school days, tough losses, exciting wins and everything in between. Being a part of this team as a whole – including my 4x400 relay team where we share in each other’s achievements and victories – is very rewarding. My relay team is made up of girls I truly consider close friends. Pushing each
other to give everything we can during our events creates a bond for everyone on the team. We celebrate each other’s victories like they are our own, and we pick each other up when needed. That’s what has made my high school experience truly unforgettable!
Besides maintaining her course schedule and academics this coming year, Rae hopes to improve some of her personal track records and walk away knowing she gave it everything she had! While being a student athlete has its challenges, she’s learned to focus only on academics while she’s in class and focus on training when she’s at the track.
“I learned early on that discipline and time management are everything! Staying on task with whatever side I’m working on in that
moment and keeping them separate – either track or school – has been crucial. It allows me to keep my head clear of any distractions, keeping me 100 percent focused on my task at hand,” she shares.
Her other stellar advice: Don’t be afraid to take a break and breathe!
When she’s not on the track, Rae volunteers at local schools and libraries, and trains nonstop, including off-season meets to challenge herself against top talent statewide. Collegiate track is definitely her dream – as is a degree in graphic design.
For this soon-to-be senior and her teammates, camaraderie is key – and the future couldn’t be brighter!
“For many of us in the Lake Norman area, when we say ‘there’s nothing to eat in the house,’ we mean there aren’t any foods we really want to eat at the moment. For the families we serve, when they open their fridge or pantry, it’s completely empty. Food insecurity is more than just being hungry — students can also encounter cognitive and behavioral issues when they don’t eat regularly.”
That’s a profound quote from Ashley Nydish, President of Bags of Hope, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit which supplies free weekend food provisions to school children who experience food insecurity in the Lake Norman and greater Charlotte area. Students experiencing hunger due to inadequate nutrition may also suffer from impaired concentration and learning, social and behavioral problems, and even threatened health and development.
Bags of Hope has grown from three church “backpack” ministries into a strong nonprofit, that distributed 26,251 food bags, representing a total of 221,739 meals and 201,000 pounds of food during the 2024-2025 school year. Up to 943 students at 34 schools received a backpack of food every weekend of the school year thanks to 96,726 pounds of food donated from individuals, businesses and organizations.
By MARTIE EMORY
Each weekend of the last school year, an average of 750 students received a food bag containing three dinners, two breakfasts, two lunches, two to three servings of fruits, two servings of vegetables and five snacks. In addition, students received extended break bags of food over Thanksgiving, Winter Break and Spring Break. Many of the students served receive free or reduced-price school meals, ensuring adequate nutrition during school hours (which includes breakfast and lunch).
“While we’re meeting these food needs each weekend, our goal is to change a student’s entire future and provide opportunities for lifelong success,” shares Ashley. “We want to make a difference beyond just the weekend. Bags of Hope has become a reliable source of support for food for so many schools and their families, and I’m honored to work with Program Director Nicole Fiehler, the board and our exceptional team of volunteers who make it happen each week.”
Gearing up for a new school year coming soon, Bags of Hope invites you to join their Annual Back-to-School Food Drive on August 23rd from 9:00 a.m. until noon. Since the nonprofit doesn’t distribute weekend food bags during summer vacation, this year’s goal is to collect 28,000 pounds of food to help restock their warehouse to kick off the new school year!
HOW: Neighborhood challenge! Neighborhood ambassadors will distribute brown grocery bags in participating communities — each with a flyer including the list of food items needed. Businesses, gyms, sports teams and other groups can also participate.
WHO/WHEN: They need a Neighborhood Ambassador for each neighborhood! You can also participate as a business or other group (scout troop, sports team, gym, etc.) — the more the merrier! You’ll help distribute bags in your neighborhood or business and pick them back up, filled with food donations, for drop-off at the Bags of Hope warehouse on Saturday, August 23rd. The warehouse is located at 10308 Bailey Road, #413, Cornelius, NC, 28031.
“As a mom, I can’t imagine the stress families feel when struggling to provide their children with basic necessities like food. My mom spent almost 30 years as a teacher in the CharlotteMecklenburg Schools, and I saw how she personally helped her students in so many ways over the years — and there are so many teachers who still do this today.”
EXAMPLES OF APPROPRIATE DONATION ITEMS INCLUDE:
• Canned pasta (ravioli, SpaghettiOs, etc.)
• Ramen noodles (individual packs or cups)
• Hormel Compleat meals
• Mac & Cheese (boxes or cups)
• Peanut butter (small jars work best)
• Oatmeal packs (boxes of individual packs)
• Canned vegetables (green beans, corn, carrots — think kid friendly!)
• Applesauce, fruit cups or canned fruit
• Individually packed snacks (granola bars, chips, cookies, crackers)
• Also accepted are $20 grocery store gift cards throughout the year which are sent home with students over Thanksgiving, Winter Break and Spring
Break (Food Lion is best for the families served by Bags of Hope).
Join their mission to have students well-fed, well-rested and ready to learn on Monday morning! If you’d like to be a Neighborhood Ambassador during the August Food Drive, email info@bagsofhopeLKN.com, and follow@BagsofHopeLKN on Facebook and Instagram for updates. Visit bagsofhopeLKN. com for more information on donating or volunteering throughout the school year.
must have had 4 or 5 hanging from the ceiling in my bedroom at one time. When I went to high school I majored in aircraft maintenance. And when I enlisted in the service, I went to the United States Air Force. So how did I get into sailing?
Maybe it started when I was working for Western Electric in Winston Salem, NC. I had a Sunfish sailboat, and I would take it all over including the beach just to ride it in on the
Should I retire to powerboating or sailing?
Marianne and I went to the Annapolis sailboat show and I fell in love with all the sailboats. I asked Marianne if she would like to retire early and sail to all those nice places. She was in. So that was our goal. I have had four sailboats. A Sunfish, a 25’ O’Day, a 34’ O’Day and our 42’ Tayana. We sailed the 25’ up the Hudson River. The 34’ O’Day to Bermuda and back while we were in Raritan Yacht Club in New Jersey. This was a 1300-mile round trip. It took us 6 ½ days to get there, a week in Bermuda, and 6 ½ days to return. Going back to work was hard. And we lived on the 42’ for four years and sailed her for nine years and 20,000 miles.
One of the nicest things about sailing is that you can spend as much or as little as you like. This was important if you were going to retire early. We didn’t know how much it would cost us. But God has a way. The condo we bought in New Jersey and lived in for a couple of years ended up selling and netting us a large amount of money. We then invested this in a Tayana 42’ sailboat. She would take about two years to build her in Taiwan. So, we got an apartment
The Tayana was delivered on time. We moved aboard and continued to hone our skills Now we had to learn how to live abroad and work. We worked for another year, and this was quite an experience. Living aboard in the winter is challenging. We had below freezing temperatures, and snow that winter. I had bet Marianne that she had had 50 pairs of shoes in the trunk of her car so she could be stylish at work. She had 49. We had to climb over the bow rail on the front of the hull, and we

For this month I wanted to share another surf n’ turf dish that I have loved making lately - Rock Crab topped filet
Ingredients:
• Filet Mignon steak (at least 4 oz. I usually go for an 8oz)
• Crab - I just get whatever looks the best at the store. Harris teeter has some great rock crab clusters for cheap every now and then. I usually buy 5-6 for 2 steaks.
• Salt & Pepper for steak
• Compound butter
Instructions:
1. Let your filets get to room temp and season them liberally with salt and pepper or your favorite rub on all sides
2. Preheat smoker (or oven) to 225 or 250 degrees
3. Let the steak cook for about 15-20/25 minutes - depending on thickness.
4. You want to let it go until about 110 for a medium rare end result
5. Once you’re at 110, pull the steak, heat up a pan (stainless or cast iron works great) to medium/high oil it up and sear the steak for a couple minutes per side
6. You can add some butter after the oil and initial sear to baste (along w/ some thyme, rosemary and whatever herbs you prefer)
7. While you’re waiting on the pan to get hot, get a pot of hot (salted) water boiling
8. Throw the rock crab in the pot for around 7-10 minutes until the shells turn red
9. Once cooked you can put them in a bowl of cold water before cracking the shells
10. After you get the steak to your preferred temp (I like to pull the filet at 125 and let it rest for 7-8 minutes and it’ll carry over to that perfect 135ish for a nice cool pink medium rare
11. While the steak is resting - place the compound butter on top of the filets
12. I’ve been buying a whiskey pepper compound butter from a local butcher that works great here, but any kind of compound butter creation works.
13. Once the steaks are rested, and your crab is out of the shells, place it on top of the steak and more compound butter on top of that if you desire, squeeze a little lemon juice and you’ll have a great surf n turf meal that is sure to impress!

While many summer travelers flock to North Carolina’s coast, the mountain city of Asheville offers a refreshing alternative for July adventurers. Nestled in the Blue Ridge Mountains at 2,200 feet elevation, Asheville boasts comfortable summer temperatures averaging 10-15 degrees cooler than the state’s lowland areas, with typical July highs in the mid-80s and pleasant evening temperatures in the 60s.
July transforms the Blue Ridge Mountains into lush green wonderlands. The Blue Ridge Parkway, America’s longest linear park, reaches its summer prime with wildflowers carpeting mountain meadows and spectacular overlooks offering 100-mile visibility on clear days. Craggy Gardens, located at milepost 364, showcases native purple rhododendrons that typically bloom through early July, creating stunning natural displays.
Waterfalls throughout the region reach their most accessible conditions, with moderate water flows maintaining their beauty while allowing safe exploration. Popular falls include Looking Glass Falls in Pisgah National Forest and the easily accessible 60-foot Catawba Falls, both offering natural swimming holes perfect for cooling off on warmer July afternoons.
Asheville’s vibrant downtown reaches peak energy during July evenings. They’re bringing the celebration back to the South Slope for this year’s Independence Day Block Party and it’s going to be bigger and better than ever.
Enjoy live performances by the 100th Army Band and the Mission Accomplished Band,
cheer on the always-epic Ultimate Air Dogs, and stick around for a fireworks show that will blow you away—literally and figuratively.
More details are at ashevilledowntown.org/ events/independence-day-block-party, but for now… mark your calendars, dust off your red, white, and blue, and get ready to party on the Slope!
Known as “Beer City USA,” Asheville boasts more breweries per capita than any other U.S. city. July brings special seasonal releases and outdoor beer gardens into full swing. The South Slope Brewing District offers walkable access to numerous craft breweries.
The city’s farm-to-table restaurant scene thrives in summer with local farmers markets providing peak produce. July brings the height of tomato season, celebrated at many establishments with special menu offerings. The weekly Asheville City Market and North Asheville Tailgate Market showcase the region’s agricultural bounty and artisanal food producers.
Visiting Asheville in July 2025 represents more than just a vacation—it’s an opportunity to participate in the region’s remarkable recovery following Hurricane Helene’s devastation in September 2024. The storm’s unprecedented flooding caused significant damage throughout Western North Carolina, with Asheville serving as the epicenter of both destruction and resilience.
Eight months into recovery efforts, the city’s tourism infrastructure has largely rebounded. The majority of downtown businesses, restaurants, and cultural attractions are again operational, though visitors will notice ongoing restoration projects throughout the region. The Asheville Strong campaign has united local businesses under a commitment to sustainable rebuilding, with many establishments contributing portions of their proceeds to community relief funds.
While some backcountry areas and secondary roads remain under repair, the primary tourist corridors and major attractions have been prioritized for restoration. Visitors are advised to check the Asheville Tourism Board’s website for the latest updates on trail conditions and road access before planning outdoor adventures. By returning to Asheville this July, travelers not only experience the region’s natural beauty and cultural richness but also become active participants in one of America’s most inspiring community renewal stories.
Dear Dr. Keith,
I’m a fifty four year old fit and attractive woman who’s been divorced for about 5 years. I have two grown children who have both graduated college and have secured good jobs. Both are in apparently healthy relationships, with one recently getting married. I have no relationship with their father who was physically and emotionally abusive; a narcissist according to the therapist we/I saw during and after the demise of our marriage. My children struggle with their feelings toward their father and are currently in therapy dealing with those issues. They don’t want to bring the toxicity created by their upbringing into their current relationships. I appreciate their proactiveness and courage to face their past and move beyond the drama, setting healthy boundaries with their father. Unfortunately, it took me way too long to do so, and finally leave. I was concerned that my relationship with my children would be damaged beyond repair, because of the story my ex-husband wrote of why I left. He could’t believe I would leave and told our kids and friends horrible lies. Some of our friends believed him, some didn’t. Fortunately my kids didn’t buy into his stories, and I’m no longer friends with the ones who did.
I made a conscious decision not to date for a while, choosing to get help through therapy and self discovery. I’m currently in a much better space, physically, mentally and emotionally. I’ve done well with my career, investments and am contemplating retiring. However, I’m an empty nester and not sure what my next chapter will be. I started dating about a year ago and wasn’t sure how to jump in. I didn’t realize how difficult dating, especially at my age would be. A friend of mine suggested I try on-line dating, and helped me build my profile. I put it on multiple sights and have gone on multiple dates, mostly disappointed by the quality of men I have met. I dated one person for a few months, until his insecurities, jealousy and need to control everything; including me, became intolerable and I ended it. I thank God I was strong enough to walk away, therapy saved me. I even paid a dating service to help me which was a waste of time and money, same results. I don’t want to settle for just anyone. Idealistically, I’d like to find my soulmate and fall in love, however, I don’t know if I know what love is. I thought I was in love with my husband, but I think I was afraid of being alone and stayed. I allowed him to make me feel weak, insecure and incapable of doing life without him. I don’t believe that now, and like who I am. Fortunately, I have a great group of friends to do things with, and keep me busy. I do feel like somethings missing, and I believe that’s a healthy, loving relationship with a man. Do I want to do life without a partner? No. Will I? If necessary, yes. Now that you know some of my background, what advice do you have for me regarding retirement, dating and life moving forward? I would appreciate some guidance.

By KEITH O’NEILL, PH.D.,C.HT.
Hey Candice,
Congratulations on having the courage and strength to leave a toxic relationship. Unfortunately, there are those who choose to live a fear based life, wasting years of their lives and staying in the negativity. Good on you to remove yourself. Fortunately for you, your children understood why you left and didn’t buy into their father’s stretching of the truth. Most children find it difficult to separate the truth from their feelings, become confused and fearful of betraying their mother or father. They feel like they have to choose sides and develop negative feelings that they carry into adulthood and their relationships. Your children were wise to not allow themselves to fall into that trap. As far as their relationship with their father goes, it’s not yours and you’ll be smart to stay out of it. They have to figure it out and continue to set healthy boundaries which can be challenging, especially when dealing with a narcissist. It sounds like your kids are wise beyond their years, choosing to do the work necessary to move beyond the negative and creating wonderful lives for themselves, rejecting the victim narrative. Be proud, you’ve raised them right. When someone makes the choice to get a divorce, they’re not only divorcing their spouse, but also some of their friends. The people who chose to believe your ex-husband and no longer want to be your friend are people you don’t want in your life anyway. Their loss, your gain.
Dating can be a challenge and social media makes it more so. In theory, dating sites open up opportunities to meet people you may not come across in your daily life. That number is dictated by the number of miles you’re willing to travel to meet someone. The downside is someone can be anyone they want to be behind a computer, creating an illusion of who they really are. Their profile photo may be from 20 years ago, pretending to be younger than they are. They may be married, and saying they’re not. I’ve heard more horror stories, then Cinderella stories regarding dating site romances over the years, but that doesn’t mean you can’t be one of the good ones. I still like the organic way, meeting in person. It’s important to put yourself out there to meet quality people, and not wait for it to come to you. Don’t be afraid to ask your friends or co-workers if they know any successful single men they could introduce you to. Many successful relationships come from those introductions. Take golf lessons and maybe join a country club, lots of single men play golf. Take swing dance lessons, both singles and couples sign up. A lot of dance studios will open up their club a couple of nights for open dance, where you’ll have an opportunity to meet single men. Look up the site meetup.com. It’s a national website for groups/organizations in different cities to expand membership. Singles, hiking, pickleball and social clubs are just examples of what you can find on the site. My recommendation for a first date is coffee, small time commitment. I believe you’ll know within fifteen minutes or so if you want to see someone again, or not. You either have chemistry with someone, or you don’t. You can’t manufacture it, so don’t settle. If you connect with someone online. Set up a phone conversation within a couple of days, and meet for coffee within a couple of weeks. If they balk at that, red flag. Don’t waste your time texting or emailing for weeks or months without meeting in person, scam alert. Most important, trust your gut. If it doesn’t feel right, it probably isn’t. Be patient, have fun and stay aware. As far as retirement goes, go for it, that’s what you’ve worked for your entire life. I’ve found the people that struggle with retirement, have no purpose and we all need to have it. The good news is you get to write your story and make this a wonderful chapter. Travel, family, good friends and healthy relationships can enhance your experiences and help to create great memories, the road to a purposeful life. Don’t be afraid. The one certainty in life is uncertainty, embrace it…

This past month I had the pleasure of chatting with Holly Jones, née Shelton, about what life is like as the wife of a NASCAR Cup Series driver, while also balancing being a new mom. This might be one of my favorite interviews I’ve done yet! Holly was super easy to talk to, down to earth and funny, too. I hope y’all enjoy a little look into her life as much as I enjoyed the interview.
Some of you may know of Holly because she is wife to Erik Jones, driver of the LEGACY MOTOR CLUB no. 43 Toyota Camry; However some of you may know her from the days she was behind the wheel of a midget car on weekends racing to win. Holly, a California native, began racing at a young age and by twelve years old she was racing outlaw karts. In 2016, Holly began racing for Toyota Racing development in the National Midget Series through the 2018 season while simultaneously working towards earning a degree in criminal justice from California State University, Sacramento.
Right around the time her 2018 season finished up, Holly met Erik. The way they met she described is a “funny” story and I would add cute! She had been competing
with a “friend” from Facebook on the Words with Friends app, but the name wasn’t one she was familiar with because Erik goes by a different name on Facebook. Once he slid into her DM’s trash talking, her curiosity peaked and she soon found out who she had been playing this harmless game of Words with Friends with. The friendly banter continued and soon she went to Texas to join him for Toyota Motorsports Day, had their first date on Halloween and the rest is pretty much history. A year after that Holly said she “went to North Carolina and never came home”. They were engaged in December 2022 before officially tying the knot in August 2023.
Now, Holly is Erik’s number one supporter as he races to win on Sundays. Having the knowledge and experience within racing herself has been a positive of their relationship. Having the understanding of what all it takes every week to compete at a high level gives her insight into how to show up for him on the good days and bad. She knows to stay quiet until he is ready to talk about it, although she commented that he is “really good about not bringing it home with him”. In previous seasons, she would
The Jones’ are enjoying this new season of parenthood together, even if it makes things a little busier or shifts the dynamic a bit on race days especially. From Holly’s perspective, Sundays are really busy as she tries to be at all the appearances and media agendas for Erik while caring for David. One thing they do before each race is make sure to have some quiet time together. She describes her days might look a “little different” than a lot of race wives sharing, “20 minutes before driver intros I’ve woken up from a nap with David, throw on a Target or Amazon dress, eyeliner and maybe run a brush through my hair”. She went on to say, “I’m there to support Erik and keep it light”. So far this season, even with a new baby, she has been to every race except for Vegas and Phoenix (big shout-out to David for being the best baby traveler).
She and Erik are hopeful to add two or three more children to their family eventually, so when I asked Holly if she hopes to get back into racing at some point in the future she was quick to share she had no interest. Though she has always loved racing, it was never one of those things she wanted to do as a career. In fact, she told herself she’d never marry anyone in the racing industry but sometimes plans change for the better. She is happy now living vicariously through Erik while raising their son, along with taking care of their dog, Oscar and bunny, Biscuit.
Holly is in a good groove out here in North Carolina and feels “really blessed” for what racing has brought to their lives. Though a California native, she definitely feels at home here in North Carolina after being out here for nearly 7 years. Thankfully most of her family followed her out here as well so between them and Erik’s family, little David Jones is enjoying all the love! I loved this conversation with Holly and found so much of what she shared to be relatable, which we love. I can’t wait to continue cheering for Erik on Sundays and rooting for the whole family in whatever they take on next!

Did you know that:
The average four-year-old laughs up to 300 times a day?
And. in contrast:
The average 40-year-old only laughs about three times per day?
That’s no laughing matter because not only is laughter good for us, but positive, healthy humor in the workplace contributes to:
• Creating a lighter mood
• Reducing stress
• Faster interpersonal bonding
• A greater sense of belonging
• Better perceived leader performance
• Overall workplace cohesion
• Improved mental health
• Closer relationships
• Reduced inhibitions
• More happily resolved disagreements
While put downs, zingers, dings and gotchas have no place in a healthy workplace, positive humor that doesn’t snipe at or demean people is clearly beneficial! Here are five things every one of us can do to foster a “good humor” culture:
Remind yourself that how you use humor is a choice. Every moment of humor can be so appropriate that your coworker wants to have another laugh with you. Okay, so that sounds a little kooky, but the intention is pure. Give it a try – hold yourself accountable by asking yourself if your joke is in good humor or not.
Elizabeth Scott, M.S., reinforces the fact that smiling is its own reward. Because it helps to release endorphins, it “...can lead you to actually feeling more happy (rather than just looking more happy). If you are able to put a smile on your face, the laughter will come more easily and the stress will melt more readily.” I’ve been practicing this for a while, especially during life’s rough spots. For me, it works.
It’s always there, but you may have to look a bit. Tooling down the highway one afternoon, the pickup truck ahead of me slowed to a near stop, then made an arc to the left. As I proceeded cautiously, I felt the pure exhilaration of watching a mama duck cross the road with eight(!) tiny ducklings waddling in lockstep behind her. Yes, I have been talking about it ever since because I can’t stop smiling – and laughing to myself – whenever that beautiful, silly, iconic image comes to mind.
Many psychologists recommend reframing or thinking differently about the things that are out of our control, the ones that bug us. Some specifically suggest that we see the humor in them. Now, this may take some serious “reframing” if your tendency is to fume. I’ve learned to shrug my shoulders and marvel at the fact that nine out of 10 times, I will end up in the loooooongest line at the checkout. Regardless of my line hopping, it’s futile; I do it anyway. And, I end up thinking, ironically, how funny is this?
Share jokes and spontaneous joy that provide you with an opportunity to laugh with others and not at them. I walked into a Dunkin’ Donuts the other day while en route to an appointment that weighed heavily on me. The server behind the counter was doing this joyful little dance that caught my eye and moved my soul, just when I really needed it. Because somewhere along the way, I stopped worrying about looking the fool; I spontaneously joined in from my side of the counter. We both laughed hysterically. Dancing in DD on a Thursday afternoon, are you serious? I was being silly. And, why not?
Good humor is available to all of us if we look for it and seek to create it. Remember that laughter is good for you. It reduces your stress and improves your outlook. And, when we share good humor with the people around us, laughter does even more – it connects us to one another. That’s priceless.
Many of us grew up in a world that looked totally different than it does today. We didn’t have cell phones, the internet, social media and in a lot of cases, we threw caution to the wind and didn’t wear bike helmets! (Pearl clutching everywhere!) I have mixed thoughts about technology, but I know it’s here to stay, and my children are “digital natives”... growing up with a smartphone pretty much attached to their hand. I don’t try to fight it, but I do love it when I see them participating in activities that now might seem “old-school” …the way I used to enjoy them.
There are all kinds of things that seem lost to previous generations. Here are some that I would love to see make a comeback!
PLAYING OUTSIDE:
Saturdays and Sundays used to mean a street full of kids playing outside from morning until the streetlights came on. There would be bike riding, big wheel riding, exploring the woods, fort building, roaming the neighborhood unsupervised, grabbing drinks and snacks at whoever’s house you ended up at and going back out to explore and play some more. If our parents needed to find us, they would look for our bike or ask one of the neighbors…because everyone knew each other. This was my experience as a kid, and I know it was the same for many of my peers.
ROLLER SKATING:
Whether outside in the street or at
By KAREN COOPER
the local skating rink, roller skating was a happening pastime back in the day. For me and my friends, we would roller skate in the street on weeknights and weekend days and then head to the skating rink on Friday and Saturday nights for some REAL exciting nightlife! There was the thrill of learning to skate backwards, doing tricks, visiting the snack bar for a “suicide” (all the drinks mixed together). Then the angst of wondering who might ask you to “couple skate” when those were announced and the thrill of standing under a number out on the rink floor while a giant dice was rolled to see who would win the prize. Roller skating was truly a lifestyle.
These games would most often be played when the sun was going down. All the better for hiding out!
Kick the Can is a game in which one player tries to find and tag others who are hiding before each hiding player can run to and kick a can which is positioned near the center of the field of play.
Sardines is a really fun game that is played like hide and go seek — only in reverse! One person hides, and everyone else searches for the hidden person. Whenever a person finds the hidden person, they quietly join them in their hiding spot. Soon, the hidden group starts to look like a bunch of sardines!
HOPSCOTCH:
Who doesn’t love hopscotch? It’s a game of skill, balance and it’s super fun. There are different varieties of hopscotch which can
provide hours of active entertainment to kids who love to hop around on one leg.
MARBLES:
You may think marbles is an old-fashioned outdoor game, but it’s also a game that can be played indoors. There are different versions of the game. Kids can even make up their own rules! It’s also fun to collect cool marbles and trade with friends.
HOUSE OF CARDS:
Building a house of cards is something everyone should do at least once. It’s a game of focus and concentration, not to mention a steady hand. Who will win? Will the human remain in control, or will the cards come crashing down? Trying to build a house of cards is a rite of passage, and also a feat of patience!
JACKS:
Jacks is a great way to build patience and discipline while having fun. It’s meant to be played with 2 players, but kids can practice on their own if they find themselves bored and without a partner.
STRING GAMES:
I adored string games when I was a kid! There are a ton of these old-fashioned finger string games like Cat’s Cradle. Mom’s Minivan on YouTube has an entire playlist of how to make different ones.
