There’s something extra special about this month’s cover—Amy Jah, founder of the Sugar Mamas Movement, graces it, and for good reason! Not only is Sugar Mamas the presenting sponsor of our 4th annual Women on the Move Conference, which took place on March 20th, but the movement itself was actually born from this very event. Amy attended the conference a few years ago, was inspired, and turned that spark into the thriving community that Sugar Mamas is today. How cool is that? It’s been so much fun to both be a member of the group and watch it evolve. Amy is such a powerhouse, and I love surrounding myself with women like her!

If you missed this year’s Women on the Move Conference, I’m truly so sorry—it’s always the best day! But don’t worry, you can check out all the fun over on @forsythmags on social media. And if you want to be the first to know when tickets go on sale for 2026, head to forsythwoman.com and subscribe to our newsletter.

As I write this, the conference is just a few days away, and to say I’m a little anxious is an understatement. I keep joking that this event is more stressful than planning my wedding (LOL, but also… kind of true?!). I take a lot of pride in making sure this day is impactful and worthwhile for every single attendee. Every year, I have stress dreams—things like missing the conference entirely or no one showing up. Of course, I know the event will be fantastic (it always is!), and I have the most amazing team behind me, but that pressure never fully fades. And honestly? I think that little bit of stress and anxiety is a good thing. It means I care and it means this event matters, right?

Now, onto this amazing April issue—hot off the press and packed with incredible content!

Where Every Detail Tells a Story

For the past five years, Theodore B. Interiors in Winston-Salem has built quite the following of discerning clients who admire and appreciate Owner and Principal Designer Isabella Migliarese’s impassioned sense of style.

Isabella is hands-on with every project contracted by her fullscale interior design firm – from a dedication to luxury residential remodels and new home builds, to commercial spaces such as med spas, doctors’ offices, retail stores and restaurants. Every space she touches is customized to reflect the client’s personal vision, enhanced by the distinctive details she knows so well.

Working with Theodore B. Interiors means brilliant design, coupled with thoughtful interactions. Isabella may take a moment to nudge you towards a new trend, but never without maintaining a timeless element from your personality – and always striking the perfect aesthetic balance.

“I really focus on creating an experience for my clients,” Isabella explains. “It can be what you see, smell or hear in their space – every emotion someone experiences there, whether it’s a decided sense of calm or an even bolder feeling. Establishing a personal and functional space can still evoke a feeling of luxury.”

For home renovations and new home construction, Isabella and her team can consult on finish and décor selections to make your home the beautiful retreat your family deserves. She’s also available to travel all over the country to consult on designs for vacation homes.

“I am the person who executes and brings the design to life – I’m the connection between builder, tradesmen and the client,” she adds.

Closer to home, Isabella is currently orchestrating several commercial projects, each with its own unique story and style. A truly fabulous expansion project, Olga Belle Aesthetics in Clemmons, NC, is a new woman-owned Triad business and a joy to bring to life – including the chance to work with Owner Olga Belteton. “Olga’s vision for her new space is one where clients feel welcomed to come as they are – knowing they will depart feeling their absolute best!” shares Isabella.

Olga defines her business expansion as a true labor of love, inspired by a desire to create a space that feels both luxurious and Nordic.

“My goal was for Isabella to design an environment where clients not only receive top tier treatments but also feel safe, seen and supported,” Olga explains.

Isabella points out the ambiance here is all about elegance and warmth, using very organic materials and colors. Think chandeliers, pendant lighting and carefully curated details to create a serene, yet sophisticated atmosphere. As a bonus, she loves partnering with another young, confident business owner!

For the exceptional Studio Hour in High Point – also a female-owned business – Isabella is curating a calm palette with natural and minimal elements, allowing those utilizing this unique space to be their most creative selves.

“This is a photo studio/rental flex space for creative content making – and unlike any other in the Triad. Owner Miroslava Rizos is marketing this amazing space to trade professionals in the photography and videography industry, as well as content creators looking for a luxurious backdrop! We want the space to be able to transform for multiple looks, as needed, with prop sets incorporated into the design,” Isabella explains.

Shifting gears, Isabella is also thrilled to be designing a modern mountain chalet – an exciting new build – in a prestigious new community in Cashiers, NC. Those fortunate homeowners will be the grateful recipients of her unsurpassed level of style and business savvy!

Contact Isabella and her talented team to discuss your own upcoming project via their website theodorebinteriors.com. Follow their creative endeavors on Facebook and Instagram @theodoreb.interiors. Theodore B. Interiors is located at 1031 Burke Street in Winston-Salem, 336.391.1209.

10 YEARS STRONG

HOW BUDGET BLINDS CONTINUES TO LEAD IN NORTHWEST NC

Since 1992, Budget Blinds has been the leader in the window coverings industry. With almost 1,500 locations across the U.S. and Canada, we have a franchisee somewhere near you and ready to serve your residential or commercial needs.

Mack Moore founded Budget Blinds of North Winston-Salem 10 years ago, in April 2015 and shortly thereafter, he expanded operations to include Budget Blinds of Mt. Airy. Then, in the summer of 2023, he took ownership of Budget Blinds of Boone, folding operations there into his Pfafftown-based office and showroom. We now cover nine counties in Northwest NC including all or parts of Forsyth, Stokes, Surry, Rockingham, Yadkin, Wilkes, Watauga, Ashe, Avery and Alleghany.

Lately, copycat competitors have appeared who try to mimic the Budget Blinds model – even creating names which either start with the letter “B” or have alliteration in their names with the letter “B.” That’s a sure sign of imitation. But, don’t be fooled.

No matter how hard they try, they can’t match Budget Blinds – we are the largest and best for many reasons.

We offer the largest and most varied selection of window coverings – from window film to blinds, shades, drapes, shutters, home automation, to outdoor shades and screens – we have options no matter your need.

We offer exclusive selections from all the major manufacturers – Hunter-Douglas, Lutron, Enlightened Style, Signature Series, Draper, Norman, Phaseii, BLOC and others. We are not limited to one or two manufacturers, which allows us to tailor selections to your budget.

We are both international and local. Our scope and buying power is international, and our staff is local – we live and work right here in your community.

Our staff is made up of highly trained professionals, thoroughly versed in window covering options and how each can transform your home or workplace into a beautiful, functional space.

Our warranty and service package surpasses all others’ – our standard warranty includes 12 months of no-charge service calls, a manufacturer’s limited lifetime warranty and either a five-year or a lifetime No-Questions-Asked Repair or Replacement Guarantee. This exclusive NQA guarantee covers damage you may cause – no one else dares copy this.

We offer no-charge, no pressure design consultations in your home or business – our design consultants expertly measure, show you treatment/fabric/color options and usually can provide you a quote on the spot.

Copycats can copy our name, but they cannot match all that Budget Blinds offers – when we say Style and Service for Every Budget, we deliver.

Keeping It Real

IN OVER YOUR HEAD

Have you ever felt in over your head? If you’re living and breathing, of course you have! We all face times when life throws us into the deep end just to see if we can swim.

We panic as we gurgle, completely sure we’re going under. But, if we keep fighting, we realize we are stronger than we recognized. We uncover deeper wells of capacity in ourselves.

I’ve been studying a fascinating leader who stepped in to lead a generation, though he feared he didn’t have what it would take. He shook in his boots so anxiously that God had to tell him THREE TIMES, almost back to back, “Be strong! Be courageous! Do not be afraid or discouraged. For the Lord your God is with you wherever you go.” (Joshua 1:6, 7, 9)

Do you know why this is one of the most popular verses in Scripture? Because it speaks to every one of us as our knees knock and our thoughts race, telling us we don’t have what it takes to accomplish the task before us.

Joshua carried the ginormous assignment of leading an entire people, who had wandered aimlessly for 40 years, to a place of victory. That’s no small feat!

When you stall for long periods of time, it’s easy to embody a sense of learned helplessness. You start believing that because you could not win the first time, you never will. (Someone just felt that!)

It’s like this. If you chain a baby elephant to a pole, he bucks to free himself but learns he cannot. As he grows, he assumes he can never break free, so he stops trying.

When fully grown, the elephant’s strength could topple the whole edifice. But, the helplessness instilled in him sticks with him. He perceives he is trapped forever…so he stays trapped!

THIS is the mentality Joshua had to overcome for himself and for those he led. Just because they failed the first time didn’t mean they would fail every time.

Until Joshua could break free from that defeated thinking, he didn’t stand a chance! But, as he wholeheartedly embraced God’s Word over his life, his perspective transformed into certainty that yes, indeed, he could conquer…AND HE DID!

What has you feeling like you’re in over your head? More importantly, in what area of your story are you convinced that because you once failed, you can never win? Friend, believe me when I tell you, that you are NOT who you once were. You’ve grown! You’ve developed muscles you did not possess previously.

Where you come from does NOT define you. What you do with where you come from defines you! If you can’t get past your past, your history will hold you hostage even AS you stand in freedom.

If I cling to a victim mentality, NOT EVEN GOD HIMSELF can make me a Victor! The problem is NOT what I have or what I’ve been through but what I think!

It’s time to get back up and try again! It’s time to be strong and courageous!

Hear this – God commanded Joshua to BE strong and courageous. He did not say, FEEL strong and courageous. Emotions are the

language of our time. Faith is the language of our God. Don’t let emotions rob from you the Faith that gets you where God’s leading!

Did you know that courage is NOT having the strength to keep going? Courage is going forward even though you have (or feel) no strength!

The obstacle you face doesn’t have half the strength you think it has. But, your God has infinitely more strength than you realize He has!

Get up! If God is for you (AND HE IS), it doesn’t even matter what is against you! (Romans 8:31) It’s time to try again…THIS DAY!

In the world of commerce, small business owners often face an uphill battle to success. The beauty industry can be especially punishing, as hair and skincare businesses have about a 50/50 chance of failing in the first three years.

BEATING THE ODDS

Owner and CEO of Alkali, Amber Woodall, took this challenge head-on in 2010 and beat the odds. She has since grown her business from a three-chair hair salon to a beauty salon providing hair and skin services and employing more than 20 highly skilled professionals.

Alkali isn’t just a successful local business. It’s an award winning salon that’s been recognized as a top salon by Salon Today four years in a row since 2022, after recently receiving the honor of being named one of the top 200 salons in North America once again in 2025.

“For many years, Alkali didn’t qualify for a Salon Today award simply because of sales considerations. There are benchmarks and qualifications to even being considered, a goal in and of itself. Not only has Alkali been successful, but we’ve experienced growth over 30% year over year. The first year we met the minimum qualifying metrics, we won. And we have won every year since. It’s an incredible accomplishment and I couldn’t be prouder of my team,” said Amber.

THE BIGGER PICTURE

But, it wasn’t just luck and a dream that Amber grew her business into what it is today. She had a passion, analyzed the industry both nationally and locally, identified a gap that aligned with her passion and goals, and filled it. Since 2010, Amber has relentlessly and meticulously planned and executed her business strategies which center around providing superior beauty services, luxurious guest experiences and exceptional employee experiences.

Amber’s planning and dedication to her business, artistry and company culture are what’s made Alkali a four-time award winning salon and a top luxury beauty provider in the Winston-Salem area.

Local Business

WINNING NATIONAL RECOGNITION

Her goal is for every client that walks through Alkali’s doors to not just be satisfied with the services and guest experiences, but to be in love with the results and to leave feeling special and cherished, as well. Amber applies that same philosophy to the Alkali workplace, as she recognizes that it takes an amazing team for a business to grow and be successful.

ALKALI’S BIGGEST EXPANSION TO DATE

This year, Alkali is primed to hit another exciting milestone of growth – its biggest expansion yet. The salon is set to open its new spa space, right below its hair studio.

With this expansion, Alkali will be providing all major beauty services in one convenient location – hair, skin care, nails, body treatments, hydrotherapy, massage therapy and medspa services. Alkali’s newest addition will also open up new career opportunities in the Piedmont Triad area, where service providers can feel valued, grow and be paid what they’re worth.

If you’re seeking a “home” for all your beauty needs, where you’ll receive exceptional care and services, look no further than Alkali. A beauty business where you’re more than just a number, and employees are more than just “workers.” Find out more at studioalkali.com.

Having the “Money Talk” with Aging Parents Making Dollars, Making $ense

Discussing finances with aging parents can be challenging. As a result, many families delay these conversations or avoid them altogether, which can lead to unexpected financial surprises, misunderstandings and conflicts.

By talking openly about money, you ensure both their future and yours are secure, prevent potential disputes and assist in planning for longterm care. The goal of this conversation is to understand their financial situation, ensure financial stability and facilitate smooth estate planning.

Parents who have accumulated wealth over the years may resist the idea of needing help managing their money. It is important to be mindful of your language and positioning. Avoid saying, “I need to know how much money you have” or “You shouldn’t do this by yourself.” Instead, use more delicate ways to broach the subject:

1. SEGUE FROM A BROADER TOPIC

Start by finding common ground, such as discussing recent market conditions or rising healthcare costs. This can naturally lead to conversations about the health of their investments and any concerns they might have about their retirement savings. The initial goal is to make them comfortable with the broader discussion before moving on to more sensitive topics.

Example Script: “Have you been following what’s going on in the financial markets?” or “I read so much about the cost of healthcare. What’s been your experience lately?”

2. INQUIRE ABOUT THEIR FINANCIAL ADVISOR

Mention that you work closely with your advisor and that you’re curious about their experience. This allows you to gauge the depth of their relationship, frequency of contact and trust in recommendations.

Example Script: “I’ve been meaning to ask you, how do you like your financial advisor?” or “What has your advisor been telling you lately?”

3. BLAME IT ON YOUR FINANCIAL ADVISOR

If bringing up the topic feels too personal, use your financial advisor as a reason for the conversation. This can reduce some of the discomfort, as most financial advisors agree that family financial discussions are beneficial.

Example Script: “My financial advisor suggested that it’s a good idea for families to discuss their financial plans. Would you be open to going over the basics together?”

4. INQUIRE ABOUT THE HANDLING OF THEIR ESTATE

If you end up playing a direct role in executing their estate, you have an interest in ensuring things are well thought out and coordinated. Even so, frame this in their interests, not yours.

Example Script: “I read so much about estate planning and what can go wrong. Do you feel good about your plans?” or “If you don’t mind me asking, how recently have you updated your estate plan?”

Approaching the money conversation with empathy, timing and a collaborative mindset can make this easier for everyone involved. Start small and gradually move towards more detailed conversations. This works best when discussed over multiple conversations. Simply initiating the dialogue can often be the hardest part.

Proven Individualized Care

THE PATH TO A NATURAL, MORE YOUTHFUL LOOK

Salem Plastic Surgery & Renewal MedSpa specializes in cosmetic and restorative procedures – with a priority of providing superior care to every patient, in the most positive surroundings possible!

Their specialized staff – including nurse injectors Heather Hayden and Joy Goins – are dedicated to what they do, something you’ll recognize from your very first encounter. Both bring compassion and expertise to their roles.

Heather is a registered nurse who began working in the aesthetic industry – launching her injectables career – right out of nursing school. She left the industry for a few years, then returned to what she loves.

“Since returning, I take every opportunity available to participate in training that is offered,” shares Heather. “I love to learn new techniques and advance my skills any way possible.”

She credits working in the operating room for really enhancing her knowledge of the facial structure.

“While assisting with facelift surgery, I’m able to ask questions of the surgeons and better learn facial anatomy in real time. I’ve always had an interest in anything involving beauty, and as nurses, we have that natural desire to help others. Injectables allow the correction of subtle – or not-so-subtle – concerns that a client may want corrected. People leave the office excited with a self confidence boost. It feels nice that I’m able to help them feel better.”

Heather describes specific issues that can be improved with injectables. “There are fillers which provide volume correction and treat fine lines and wrinkles, as well as neurotoxins which paralyze the muscles to inhibit the formation of further wrinkles. Natural is always my main goal, and patients are appreciative of this approach. I start out with less, then add as needed, to keep things looking natural for the patient.”

What’s her advice to complement your injectable treatments? “It’s important to have a good skincare routine, whether or not you decide to pursue injectables. If you’re not taking care of your skin but spending money on injectables, you’re only putting a Band-Aid over the problem. I personally love the skincare products we carry here, which are Obagi, IS clinical and Clinical skin. And, sunscreen should be part of everyone’s daily routine!”

Joy Goins, nurse injector and anesthetic nurse, has always been interested in the world of medical aesthetics and plastic surgery. “It’s truly been a dream come true to work as an aesthetic nurse, not only because the work is fun, but because the industry is ever changing,” Joy shares. “It’s exciting to know something new is always around the corner, and we pride ourselves on continuing education to provide the best possible results.”

everyone requires an approach that’s unique to them.”

Joy also adds that injectables can often be intimidating because clients are afraid they’re going to look fake.

Joy echoes the importance of operating room experience. “I learned about facial anatomy through photos and diagrams in school, but being able to see and touch facial structures firsthand in surgery is very beneficial. I feel as though I can assess my patients and their particular needs in a more personal way. We also have the benefit of being able to give our patients realistic expectations because we know how surgical vs. injectable results differ,” she explains.

Joy feels a personal connection to every client that sits in her chair because she’s been in their shoes and also felt the insecurity of wanting to change something about her physical appearance.

“I always tell clients that my job is to help them feel more confident in themselves, not to completely change their recognizable features. I’m inspired daily by clients because aesthetics is not ‘one size fits all,’ and

“I’ve found injectables can address issues with aging in the most natural way. Neurotoxins, such as Botox and Dysport, are great for treating fine lines to the forehead and crow’s feet, while dermal fillers are perfect for volume loss in the cheeks and lips. However, this is just the tip of the iceberg for injectables, and there are so many options for creating a natural, more youthful look!” she adds.

VintageVintageVentures

Throughout the brief history of the Vintage Ventures column, our focus has been on shopping local consignment, thrift and vintage stores in order to reduce waste, support small business owners and spark new hobbies among those who get a thrill out of rummaging through preowned goods on a Saturday afternoon. In addition to helping shoppers, movers can also take solace in saving themselves a trip to the landfill by utilizing convenient services to take care of gently used goods no longer needed.

I recently moved apartments and discovered how convenient these services could be firsthand – in fact, I was pleasantly surprised by the helpful staff and ease of transferring furniture and home décor into the arms of those in need. Although the Triad hosts a handful of locations that provide high quality, pre-owned goods at an affordable price that benefit the environment and local economy, this month’s focus will be less about shopping and more about helping those in need.

While dumping old items in one fell swoop at a landfill may seem like an easier option than searching around for consignment or donation opportunities, don’t underestimate the Triad’s more environmentally friendly and stressfree alternatives. Below are two handy and helpful community resources for those seeking an outlet for re-homing their once-loved furniture, décor and more.

WINSTON-SALEM RESCUE MISSION

As listed on the organization’s website, the goal of Winston-Salem Rescue Mission is “Helping our hurting neighbors find hope and healing through the transforming gospel of Jesus Chris.” At first glance, the average reader may not assume that WS Rescue Mission is a tool for reducing waste; however, the organization makes it impressively simple for those looking to downsize or donate goods to utilize their pickup service.

By scheduling a handy pickup online, users can list the type of item(s) they are looking to donate (furniture, appliances, miscellaneous items and clothing) and even upload photos before submitting the request to give the WS Rescue Mission team an idea of what to expect. As long

A Series Uncovering Vintage Gems In and Around Forsyth County

as items adhere to Rescue Mission’s condition policies, donations are picked up and accepted at your convenience and can even be claimed as federal tax deductions due to the organization’s status as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization. Those who prefer dropping off donations in person can take acceptable items to 715 N. Cherry Street, Winston-Salem, NC 27101 between 9:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. on Mondays through Fridays, and between 9:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m. on Saturdays. Visit Winston-Salem’s Rescue Mission online at wsrescue.org to learn more.

THE HABITAT FOR HUMANITY RESTORES

I selected Habitat for Humanity ReStore as my donation option of choice in order to re-home a queen sized bedframe and headboard, dresser, old mirror and a few more items I no longer needed for my new apartment. My sister and I loaded the deconstructed bed and other items into a pickup truck, pulled up to the dropoff station at the Habitat Forsyth Restore donation center at 2551 Peters Creek Parkway in Winston-Salem and watched a small team of employees quickly unload the truck and take the items into the warehouse. In fewer than 10 minutes, my sister and I were free of a truckload of used furniture and were on our merry way after a hectic day of heavy lifting.

As explained on the website, “The Habitat for Humanity ReStores are nonprofit home improvement stores and donation centers that sell new and gently used furniture, home accessories, building materials and appliances to the public at 25%-75% off the retail price.” Additionally, all proceeds help build or improve local homes and homes around the world, in addition to reducing the use of landfills. In fact, it diverts 200 tons of household materials from landfills annually.

The Ultimate Prom Accessory: A Glowing Spray Tan

With all the anticipation of prom season on the horizon, now is the perfect time to get to know the benefits – not to mention the luxurious feeling – of a flawless spray tan.

For this milestone event, pamper yourself at Sunless Body Studios with a spa-level experience that allows you to achieve gorgeous color in minutes – in the safest way possible!

“Every tan at Sunless Body is a customized, white-glove service, making it an indulgent, yet essential step in preparing for prom,” explains Owner and Entrepreneur Ava Vann. “Unlike traditional tanning, our UV-free approach ensures a radiant, skin-safe glow without longterm sun damage.”

For the best results, the Sunless Body team recommends booking a custom airbrush tan appointment for one to two days before prom night, to allow the color to fully develop and complement each client’s natural skin tone. Since this is one of their busiest times of the year, early booking is encouraged to secure an appointment. Sunless Body offers special prom packages – including group bookings for friends who want to enjoy a relaxing and fun pre-prom experience together to celebrate the season!

To ensure optimal skin health and tan longevity, Ava and her team educate clients on the importance of proper skin preparation and protection, leading up to their appointment. Avoiding UV exposure and sunburns prior to prom night is also key – not only to maintain healthy skin, but to achieve the smoothest, most even tan, as well.

“Our process is designed to enhance each individual’s natural beauty while keeping skin hydrated and protected,” adds Ava.

At Sunless Body Studios, you’ll enjoy not only the perfect sunless tanning experience, but also an elevated, relaxing retreat that even soothes the soul. The beautiful result offers customized color – in lieu of those generic tan levels that don’t come close to suiting every skin tone – and a new level of self confidence to share with the world!

“A stunning, natural tan can do wonders for your confidence, especially when it’s healthy and UV-free. You’ll feel glowing inside and out with that extra touch of color, and it can also enhance how you carry yourself in that stunning new prom dress! A spray tan provides that vital boost without the harmful effects of the sun or artificial UV light. Our luxurious spray tans and selection of Sunless Body products deliver the glorious bronzed look you deserve, combined with a relaxing, custom spa experience.”

Wondering how long your prom night tan is going to last? Your spray tan can last between seven and 12 days, depending on how often you moisturize and maintain your skin care routine. Ask your technician about Sunless Body’s face and body lotion extenders for purchase at your appointment. These can help you extend your tan past 10 days.

Ava’s hands-on approach that began as a mobile business offering the convenience of custom, sunless tanning brought to your home, has been the foundation of her success – building a local client base that is growing and glowing strong!

Sunless Body Studios is located in Winston-Salem at 205 S. Stratford Road, Winston-Salem, 336.970.1392, and in High Point at 2513 Eastchester Drive, 336.339.2428. SPREADING THE POWERFUL JOY OF FLOWERS

One photo on social media – that’s how it all began for Michael Brandon, owner of The Rooted Magnolia Florals and Events.

A simple photo, yes, but it changed his career and life path in an instant, after an outpouring of attention –and commissions – from new clients.

“I never believed in having cut flowers in my house, but during a time of deep sadness following my mother’s passing, I arranged a tray of special flowers to make me smile again and posted it online. Since then, I’ve been surrounded by more flowers than I could have ever imagined!” he says, with a laugh.

Those who know Michael well know his passion for impeccable style, incredible talent in interior design and love of flowers and plants in his home garden. Combining these talents is the perfect recipe for a successful floral and event design business, but building a business is not for the faint of heart!

Since beginning in August of 2024, The Rooted Magnolia team has devoted long hours and hard work, quickly growing the size and scale of the events they curate – including baby showers, birthday parties, corporate and charity events, and weddings booked all over the Triad. His team was also asked to provide florals for a 200-person event at the prestigious Tanger Center for the Performing Arts in Greensboro last November, on behalf of the Greensboro Symphony Guild. Their work was so well received, the Guild has plans for Michael to be the florist and designer for upcoming events through 2025 and 2026.

“I’ve always loved making every space feel special – whether it’s a venue elegantly styled to mark a once-in-a-lifetime event, a dreary office in desperate need of brightening or something as simple as cut flowers on a kitchen windowsill,” shares Michael. “I want my clients to be overjoyed with my work, and I won’t stop until I accomplish that! I know the power of beautiful fresh flowers and how they can transport anyone – no matter how they feel – to a brighter and happier day!”

This isn’t the first time Michael has opened a business, so it’s a familiar feeling. As the former CEO of an online jewelry company, he knew success, but not the creative connection he felt would fulfill his true

passion. When he relocated here last year from Sarasota, FL, coming “home” meant a new direction for his talents in the same city where his grandmother and mother had strong family ties in Greensboro, NC. Even the business name is personal – The Rooted Magnolia honors his late mother’s heritage – “rooted” in the South – and her favorite movie, the timeless story of Steel Magnolias.

His colorful florals and stunning orchid arrangements are modeled to reflect that timeless style. Using only the highestquality materials and his flawless attention to detail is what he feels sets the fledgling business apart. Want to surprise your best friend with flowers at her office, but not feeling the vibe of a traditional glass vase? Join Michael in thinking a bit more creatively!

“As a fun example, our floral purses were such a hit for Valentine’s Day that we are already taking pre-orders for Mother’s Day,” he says, hinting it’s wise to place your order now!

Being newer to the floral industry and local event landscape is something he feels gives him a sense of uniqueness.

“With a background in jewelry design, and with a keen eye on the interior design world, I don’t bring with me the typical florist personality,” he shares. “While I can

Nic See | Mixed Media Sculpture Artist

This month’s featured creator, Nic See, is a mixed media artist specializing in textiles, sculpture and wearable art, crafting unique pieces that blend creativity with sustainability. With a passion for repurposing materials, they transform innovative ideas and diverse media into expressive, one-of-a-kind works that redefine fashion and art.

How would you describe your work?

Definitely eclectic and ever evolving, I rarely do the same thing twice, and I love collecting new skills and materials to work with. I especially love working with recycled textiles, clothing, furniture, bags, etc. rather than buying things new. It’s better for the planet and better for encouraging creativity and innovation in my work.

What genres and styles influence your work most?

In my wearable art, I’m heavily inspired by classic artists like Arthur Rackham, as well as older medieval or viking art and carvings. All of my art, regardless of media, is also inspired by nature.

How have you evolved, personally, as an artist?

I’m constantly evolving and picking up new skills. Just this year, I’ve gotten into woodworking and furniture refurbishing, while last year, I learned how to incorporate 3D printing and digital sculpting. I can’t stand to be stagnant and love the thrill of a challenge. I genuinely hate to be bored, so I’m always challenging myself with new skills and projects which is also how I cope with the ever evolving insanity that is the world right now – especially American politics.

How

do you carve out time to be creative?

Sometimes it means I lose some sleep here and there when I’m deep into it. But honestly, art is my passion, it’s how I relax; it’s my outlet for strong emotions, and it’s what I look forward to all day when I’m away from my studio space. Some people play video games or watch TV after work to decompress. I’m in my studio in the backyard with a saw or my sewing room pushing my cat’s paws away from the needle.

Do you have a favorite story behind one of your projects and why?

It’s so hard to pick just one! I’d have to say my custom designed costume, inspired by Fearn the Faun from the popular Dungeons & Dragons show Critical Role. I hand-dyed all the green linen and custom built the corset from a real victorian corset pattern and even hand sculpted and cast the 12” hoof heels. My favorite fun fact is the shade of green on the chemise dress is an exact match to my cat’s eyes. He is such a handsome fellow and my best crafting buddy.

What are you working on that excites you right now?

Lately, my passion has been learning woodworking! My partner and I moved in together this year, and I’ve been having a ball fully customizing my studio space without fear of losing a security deposit like I did when I was renting. (Also, having a backyard studio space to get messy that’s separate from my sewing room is a huge plus!) Getting ready to redo all our kitchen cabinets soon, too. And, of course, I’m still enjoying sewing and doing costume and wig commissions!

What is one piece of advice you’d like to share with fellow artists, especially those at the start of their practice?

Don’t give up if it’s not perfect on the first try. Making art is just as much about enjoying the journey as the finished product. All skills take time to learn; don’t compare yourself too much to the art of others, as long as you are enjoying the process, that’s the most important part.

If you are interested in learning more about this month’s artist, Nic See, you can follow them on Instagram @seenicfx as well as find their work locally at Dose creative on Trade Street, Delurk gallery and the gift shop at the Milton Rhodes Center for the Arts.

Beauty & Fitness

AN INTERVIEW WITH YADIRA DORANTES

What do you get when you mix beauty and fitness? If you ask Yadira Dorantes at Alkali, it’s part of the bigger picture of overall health and wellness. The two fit together naturally, and can make a profound difference in your life.

WHAT DREW YOU TO THE BEAUTY INDUSTRY?

I was always drawn to the cosmetology world. When I was growing up, I was constantly playing with hair and makeup, and was the go-to friend for help with all things beauty. I used to spend hours watching YouTube videos on repeat so I could learn new hairstyling and makeup techniques.

By the time I was a senior in high school, it was clear to me that I wanted to be a hairstylist. After graduating, I went on to train at Paul Mitchell The School in Charlotte, and have been doing hair ever since—a decision I’ll never regret!

HOW DOES YOUR LOVE OF NUTRITION AND EXERCISE INFLUENCE YOUR WORK AS A STYLIST?

I believe self care, beauty, and health all tie together and are extremely important to a person’s overall well being. For the last four years, I did CrossFit, but due to the stress it puts on my body, I’ve recently started working with a fitness trainer to learn more about bodybuilding and nutrition.

I’ve found the better I take care of myself, the better I can take care of my clients. My knowledge of exercise and nutrition also helps me recommend hair care products based on individual lifestyles.

HOW DO YOU PERSONALIZE SERVICES FOR EACH CLIENT?

I personalize my services based on the individual needs of my clients by tailoring each visit based on how they typically wear their hair, what hair challenges they have, and their current or desired hair care routine.

WHAT’S YOUR ABSOLUTE FAVORITE SERVICE?

My favorite services are balayage and blonding—they let me get so creative! I love how highly customizable they can be for each client. They add incredible dimension to any hair texture and the colors can be bold, subtle, or in between.

WHAT ARE YOUR TOP TIPS FOR AT-HOME HAIR CARE?

To maintain and protect your color, always use a good color-protection shampoo, like Oribe Beautiful Color. If you have highlights, use a purple shampoo as well. I recommend Oribe’s Bright Blonde Shampoo, as you can wash with it daily. Another thing I recommend is getting a good blowout brush—it will really help with your at-home blowout struggles.

OUTSIDE OF HAIR AND EXERCISE, WHAT DO YOU LIKE TO DO FOR FUN?

I like to hang out with my family and friends, play cards and board games, and try new restaurants. My fiancé and I love to travel, and enjoy planning a big trip or two each year. We also enjoy taking our dogs on walks in the evening when we’re both home. I’m also an avid reader and love talking to my clients about their favorite books and current reads.

ANYTHING ELSE YOU’D LIKE YOUR CURRENT AND POTENTIAL CLIENTS TO KNOW?

I’m in the middle of planning my August wedding, which is not as exciting as I thought it’d be—but I’m trying to make the most out of it!

Are you ready for a beautiful new look? Book your appointment with Yadira today!

Aesthetically Pleasing Design

Timeless design effortlessly blends classic elegance with modern influences, and a thoughtful use of color can be the bridge that keeps traditional spaces feeling fresh and current. This beautifully designed bathroom exemplifies the balance with its crisp white vanity and marble countertop, both classic elements that stand the test of time. The wallpaper, however, introduces a bold yet refined touch of color, featuring intricate botanical and architectural motifs in shades of teal and green. This infusion of pattern adds personality and depth without overwhelming the space, demonstrating how a single design choice can modernize a traditional aesthetic while keeping it sophisticated and timeless.

Similarly, this bright and inviting living room with subtle colorful accents breathes life into an otherwise neutral foundation. The coffered ceiling, white walls and plush furnishings provide a timeless backdrop, while the emerald green pillows and gold accent pieces add modern flair without disrupting the space’s elegant harmony. The incorporation of natural textures, from the greenery to the rattan light fixtures, further enhances the classic-meets-contemporary appeal. By strategically introducing color through accessories and textiles, this design achieves a refreshed yet enduring look, proving that traditional interiors can evolve beautifully with just the right amount of modern influence. Our portfolio is listed on our website (junedelugasinteriors.com) under the “design projects” tab. You can see some of our projects from the past 10 years; how the styles and design trends have changed over the years. The first step is picking up the phone and reaching out to our design team. We look forward to discussing your dream design with you.

PEOPLE OF PROMINENCE SERIES

Troy Hurst

“As we grow in our consciousness, there will be more compassion and more love, and then the barriers between people, between religions, between nations will begin to fall. Yes, we have to beat down the separateness.”

Troy Hurst is living his best life. He is a sentient practitioner of healing and consciousness. His deep dive into the holistic mind and body connective tissue permeates each of his days.

He is the founder of C3, which is a “heart centered community” focused on the universality of consciousness. He was kind enough to answer questions about his quest.

TELL

US ABOUT YOUR UPBRINGING AND HOW IT PERHAPS INFLUENCED WHO YOU BECAME IN THE HOLISTIC COMMUNITY.

I was brought up in a deeply religious environment where the idea of holistic healing was frowned upon. It was considered too “New Age” although healing in this manner has been around for thousands of years. Part of my mission is to help educate people to the idea that the body is capable of healing itself if allowed and believing with them that anything is possible!

WHAT WAS THE CATALYST FOR YOU UNDERTAKING REFLEXOLOGY AND HEALING WORK?

I was introduced to reflexology 27 years ago and became fascinated with this healing modality. Although most of my career was in corporate America, after my eighth layoff and frustrated with the ego driven culture in the workplace, my wife encouraged me to pursue my passion of healing work. I’ve been practicing full time for the past nine years at my office, Planet Reflex Wellness (planetreflex. com). My work has now evolved to include Hand and Foot Reflexology, Reiki and Huna Energy Work, Master Hypnotherapist and Psychic Medium.

TALK ABOUT C3 AND ITS MISSION. Consciousness Community Center (C3) is a heart centered community where all aspects of faith are celebrated as we are all one in universal consciousness. Whether you choose to acknowledge the creator as God, Spirit, the Universe or have no faith at all, we embrace the aspect that each of us are on a unique spiritual journey.

WHAT WAS THE TRIGGER OR GERMINATION OF THE IDEA TO START C3?

The idea of C3 came to me from Spirit in December of 2023. My spiritual journey had encompassed most Christian faiths, many denominations and, being a former Baptist minister, I knew there was more. When working with my clients and having conversations about faith, the theme of being hurt/abused by the church, disenfranchised with religion and judgmentalism had really impacted many to lose faith altogether.

I kept thinking, “What if there was a community where we could come together in love and acceptance, no matter what your belief or background. A safe space to explore options about life, the afterlife, love and humanity without judgment or fear. Where sexuality is not an issue, politics are left at the door and each individual is seen in their true authentic self and celebrated for their beautiful existence. Where Scripture is used to edify and uplift, not to destroy or promote shame or judgment. A Gathering of likeminded individuals, not a church. Not a denomination. A Gathering of Love and Oneness.”

WHAT HAS BEEN YOUR BIGGEST CHALLENGE TO DATE FOR THESE PURSUITS WITH C3?

No challenges, just getting the word out to let folks know we exist. Most of our promotion has been through word of mouth and organically with our grassroots efforts. Meetings are once a month, typically, the third Sunday at 10:10 a.m. We are hoping to expand and meet on a weekly basis, once we find a space we can use as our own. Gatherings are held at 690 Women’s Fitness on Jonestown Road. We will be celebrating our one year anniversary on March 16th and are thrilled with the growth of this remarkable community!

WHAT IS ESSENTIALLY YOUR MISSION STATEMENT?

Our fundamental message can be wrapped up in the ABC’s of C3:

A – We are an Authentic Community and bless everyone to live in their true expression of who they have been created to be.

B – We are Beautiful Bohemians; celebrating Truth, Love, Beauty, Peace and Freedom.

C – A Caring Compassionate Community.

IN WHAT WAYS ARE YOU LOOKING TO GROW THE OUTREACH AND EXPOSURE OF YOUR COMMUNITY?

We believe in giving back to our local community and, each month, our amazing gathering chooses to bless a local organization with funds or giving items to those in need. We have worked with local food pantries, supported Western NC relief efforts, Forsyth Humane Society, Homeless Shelters, Adopt a School and many more. We love giving time, effort, money and love without fanfare or expectancy.

HOW CAN PEOPLE LEARN MORE ABOUT C3 AND BECOME INVOLVED?

To learn more about C3, you can visit our website, C3WS.org or Facebook page, email C3SpiritualCenter@gmail.com or better yet, come and join us and experience firsthand the difference love can make when we all work together!

Hustle Heart

This column is meant to serve as a resource for readers who seek inspiration and knowledge for building their own small business brands. Through actionable advice, find the encouragement to help you keep living your life with hustle and heart.

Slow Sales to Sold Out: Embracing Sales DMs in Your Marketing

Let’s be real – marketing can feel like a fulltime job, and for most of us, that’s not what we signed up for. If you’re a solopreneur or running a small business with a tiny (or nonexistent) team, you simply don’t have the hours to pour into complex marketing strategies, elaborate email sequences or social media posts that get lost in the algorithm abyss. Every piece of content, email or video you create needs to pull its weight and actually bring you sales.

Are you ready for the kicker?

When I work with clients who are struggling with slow sales, the first question I ask is, “How often are you actually talking about your offer?” And, after a brief silence, I usually hear some version of, “Well…”

IT’S YOUR JOB TO INVITE PEOPLE TO BUY

If you want people to buy from you, they need to know what you sell. And one of the simplest, most effective ways to make that happen? DMs.

Yes, I’m referring to those one-on-one messages you’re probably avoiding because they feel awkward or “salesy.” It’s time to reimagine them – not as cold pitches, but as personal, meaningful connections that actually help your dream customers.

THE “ICK” FACTOR OF TRADITIONAL SALES DMS

When you hear “sales DMs,” you probably cringe at the memory of that “Hey girl, how have you been?” message from a random high school acquaintance who clearly just wants you to join their MLM. Those messages feel off because they lack authenticity, warmth and, most importantly, specificity. The reason they don’t work? Because they’re casting a wide net instead of speaking directly to the right person. These kinds of DMs give direct messaging such a bad reputation because of how strictly transactional they are. These messages rarely get replied to or they feel incredibly uncomfortable for the customer to reply.

GETTING INTENTIONAL & GENUINE IN DMS

Let’s flip the script on sales DMs this month! Instead of thinking about DMs as a pushy sales tactic, think of them as intentional conversations with people who actually need what you’re offering. There is power in doing the bare minimum in your marketing! This means giving yourself permission to simplify your approach, focus on real connection and get personal with your ideal buyer!

When it’s done right, a well crafted DM can take you from needing sales to being sold out! You just have to learn how to make it personal and valuable!

MY GO-TO (CRINGE-FREE) DM FORMULA

While I prefer a voice note, this formula works beautifully in written form, as well! Here are a few steps to remember to help you create a clear, confident and completely authentic sales DM in your business.

A: Here’s why I’m messaging you.

Start with honesty, sharing why you’re reaching out, avoiding any “fluffy” precursors.

Example: “Hey [Name], I was thinking about you because I know you’ve been working on [specific challenge] and I wanted to reach out.”

B: Here is the offer I’m selling. Be clear about what you’re offering, giving details that they care about.

Example: “I just opened spots for [offer name] and it’s designed exactly for people who [describe who it’s for].”

C: Here’s why I think you’re perfect for this. Show them you’re not just copypasting this message to 100 people. Make it feel personal.

Example: “I know you’ve been wanting [specific result], and this would be such a great fit for you because [reason].”

D: Here’s how you can take action.

Make it stupid easy for them to move forward and purchase or ask questions.

Example: “If this sounds good, I’d love to send you more details or answer any questions! You can just reply here or check out the link [share link].”

E: Here’s how I feel if you don’t move forward (Spoiler alert: totally ok). Take the pressure off, so they don’t feel guilty if it’s not for them.

Example: “If it’s not the right time, no worries at all! Just wanted to make sure you knew about it in case it’s something you’d love.”

SELLING DOESN’T HAVE TO FEEL SO HARD

Remember, if all else fails with sales, try to focus on one simple strategy; talk to your people. Your next sold-out launch or product line could be a few DMs away!

HUSTLE & HEART CHALLENGE

This month, go through your past customers and warm leads on social platforms. Create a list of followers and accounts who you would truly love to have as customers and DM them following the formula shared in this article. Be genuine and confident, and you can’t go wrong!

The Crest

Where Timeless Meets Modern in the Heart of Winston-Salem

Throughout its restoration and evolution into a one-ofa-kind event venue, The Crest in Winston-Salem, NC, has remained true to the original grandeur that elevates a collection of homes along Cherry Street.

Officially open since October of 2024 – and named for its designation as the highest point of downtown – The Crest is Victorian loveliness at its finest, sprinkled with a bit of Gothic revival and charming Queen Anne style. Constructed in 1885, the home originally belonged to local businessman James Mitchell Rogers, also the first president of the Winston-Salem Chamber of Commerce and an integral part of the city’s growth and transformation. Its oversized windows overlook some of the city’s most iconic landmarks.

Home to distinguished law offices for several years, Adam Spear of the Spear Properties Group purchased the property and immediately connected with Austin Hayes, now the executive director. The two discovered

(continued on page 44)

(continued from page 42)

their mutual dream to curate an event venue that blended modern elegance with timeless appeal – a space that was quite simply destined to tell love stories!

“Adam and I were really on the same page,” says Austin, whose restaurant and hospitality background was easily the perfect match for the project.

“We’ve made sure every space in the house remained functional and photogenic, and showcasing this magnificent house is really a labor of love. It’s our goal for couples and their wedding guests to fully enjoy every moment in this beautiful setting.”

Weddings here are classic and unforgettable, whether the guest list holds as few as 10 names, or as many as 250. Smaller events such as rehearsal dinners, bridal and baby showers, holiday parties and corporate events are equally elegant in the Carriage House, which was added in the back of the house during restoration.

“The Carriage House and meticulously landscaped private gardens with lighted courtyard bring an unexpected elegance to the outside area,” adds Austin. “We’ve even constructed a sitting bench by the fountain that’s made from wood found inside the attic – one of many authentic touches – and the entire courtyard can be tented for your ceremony or reception.”

Austin loves meeting prospective clients, learning their personal stories and guiding them in bringing their vision to life. Embracing both his passion for the art of hospitality and his love for Winston-Salem, he’s also dedicated to providing as much value for clients as possible.

“Personally, I love being part of something that contributes to Winston-Salem’s charm and growth as a destination for weddings and other special occasions,” he shares. “My goal is to make the planning process as stressfree and enjoyable as possible, while creating unforgettable experiences for our guests and attending to even the smallest details.”

The venue does offer clients a preferred vendor list when they first begin planning but also allows couples to bring in their

own vendors if they prefer. Filled with intricate architectural details, the venue includes 4,500 square feet of space, including a prep kitchen fully equipped with two refrigerators, warming box, triple sink, ice machine and spacious stainless steel tables for easy plating of your reception dinner.

Overflowing with the most perfect photo opportunities, the first floor of The Crest offers the luxury of 12-foot ceilings and incredible lighting for photography. There’s also a private bridal suite upstairs –complete with a dressing room, lounge room, hair and makeup room, steamer, mini fridge and private restroom. The elegant library downstairs exudes an Old World charm filled with shelves of authentic leather-bound books – but also doubles as the groomsmen’s suite – with a refrigerator, TV with streaming channels, poker set and a full length mirror.

One distinctive difference of the venue is its prime downtown location.

“Winston-Salem is a hidden gem for many, offering fantastic accommodations, unique shops and a vibrant restaurant and bar scene for guests to enjoy – plus the bonus of onsite parking (a rarity for downtown venues) and a built-in rain plan for ceremonies,” Austin adds.

“As the only venue of its kind in the area, our historic gem radiates timeless elegance, offering a truly enchanting setting for any special occasion,” says Austin, touching on what makes The Crest so unique. “True to its Victorian style, you’ll find a cozy yet sophisticated atmosphere that’s hard to replicate.”

Still as elegant and welcoming as its earliest years, The Crest is located at 102 Cherry Street in Winston-Salem, NC, 336.865.4444. Visit thewscrest. com for details on this extraordinary venue, book a tour or request a consultation for your upcoming wedding or significant event. Welcome back to another addition of the “Trying New Things” column – I try new fitness and wellness ventures, so you don’t have to. The goal is to find activities that are not only good for the body, but something to look forward to, as well.

Last month, we tried hot yoga. This month, we are upping the pace with CrossFit.

WHAT IS IT?

CrossFit initially gained popularity in the 2000s as a high intensity fitness regimen. I remember distinctly the first time I saw CrossFit. My dad and I watched Icelandic professional CrossFit athlete Anníe Þórisdóttir (pronounced “Thor’s Daughter” – appropriately named) on ESPN. Ever since then, we refer to one another as “Annie Thor’s Daughter” after we workout. Who knew that this longtime joke could turn into giving CrossFit a chance?

WHAT DO YOU DO?

Thanks to Forsyth Woman’s publisher, Brooke Eagle, I was able to try CrossFit at her gym, Washington Park CrossFit. The space is well equipped and organized, segmented with bike machines and rowers on one side and racks of weights on the other. The space is smaller than a traditional gym, but I enjoyed the more intimate feel.

The class began with a short warm up, then we completed the workout written on a board. If you don’t know what the workouts below are, I didn’t either. The coaches and other attendees were more than willing to show and explain everything.

40 minute AMRAP (40 minutes were put on a timer, AMRAP is “as many rounds/reps as possible,” so there was no goal for how many times we should complete the circuit)

40 clean and jerks (pull a barbell from the ground to shoulders, then push the bar overhead. I split up the reps with a teammate, so we each did around 20)

40 synchronized single dumbbell stepback lunges (these lunges were done individually but, at the same time, as a pair)

40 calories on a bike or rower (we took turns to burn the 40 calories, burning around 10 at a time)

Initially, I assumed the easiest part for me would be the 40 calories on the bike. In reality, that ended

up being the most challenging. Lifting exhausted me more than anticipated, so I was drained on the bike. I also noticed serious improvement with my lunges and clean and jerks throughout the workout. By watching other people in the gym and practicing myself, I grew more comfortable with the new movements.

BEGINNER FRIENDLY?

CrossFit is challenging, team-centric and rewarding, but far from easy. I was sore for days after. If you decide to try a CrossFit class, be sure to ask questions to the coaches about anything you’re unsure about.

So beginner-friendly? A cautionary yes. If you’re willing to ask questions, learn new workouts and want to improve, it’s worth a shot. If you’re looking for a laidback activity, CrossFit might not be quite right.

INSIGHT & IMPRESSION

I was lucky enough to attend the Galentine’s Day celebration – the women in the class stayed behind to mingle, eat snacks and drink champagne. Beyond that, Washington Park CrossFit hosts events for members to participate in several times a month. Just in February, they had a Super Bowl watch party, a competition and themed workouts.

Something that resonated with me is how much community there is. Everyone knows each other's names, their jobs, about their families – it is a completely different culture than joining a large gym.

DID I FEEL LIKE I WAS WORKING OUT?

YES! Enthusiastically yes! In a finite amount of time, I felt more drained than I do in any other workout I’ve done. What really made me enjoy it was the community. Everyone had a “we’re in this together” attitude and pushed each other to succeed. If you’re looking to not feel like you’re working out, it is not going to provide passive exercise.

Washington Park CrossFit offers a free one-week trial, so I encourage you to give it a try if you haven’t. It might seem intimidating at first, but it is a great way to learn new workouts and skills with the guidance of coaches. On top of that, the social component is a selling point for me.

If CrossFit isn’t the one, don’t worry. Next month, we’re going to slow it down a little. Hint: You could say plunged into everything Washington Park CrossFit has to offer!

Throughout my life, I’ve heard older adults around me express relief at how they no longer cared as much about what others thought of them now that their teenage years and 20s had passed.

As someone who struggles with social anxiety, I never thought I would see the day that I finally believed the hype. I was convinced that their sentiments were just another rationalization they were telling themselves to starve off nostalgic feelings of fleeting youth. I am relieved to be able to say that I am now eating crow.

One thing I have noticed at 32 is that it’s true – I do care much less about filtering myself or “fitting in” as I used to; however, due to my inherent neuroticism, I will never not care. As cheesy as it sounds, assertiveness has been my personal theme for 2025 so far, and no longer fawning in response to injustice or mistreatment has become one of my newest hobbies. Practice makes perfect when it comes to mastering most skills, and, to put it frankly, no longer tolerating

Becoming Bolder Aging Out

people’s “crap” has now become a form of dopamine for me. It gives me a rush. In fact, I’ve even started actively seeking out opportunities to do so – within reason, of course.

Depending on genetic predispositions and environmental factors, not everyone responds to trauma in the typical “fight or flight” mode we often hear spoken about as average Joes. When I use the term “fawning,” I refer to the subconscious trauma response of simply agreeing to or going along with someone else’s problematic behavior to keep the peace or avoid consequences. Just like “fight or flight,” fawning is also a deep-rooted, instinctive and protective response to a perceived or real threat that stems from adverse childhood experiences and other endured trauma. I’m no psychologist and I won’t babble on much further but, in short, I am labeling myself as a long-term “fawner” actively in recovery.

I do attribute some of my dedication to growing assertiveness to years of weekly

therapy, but I believe much of my newfound determination to stand up for myself is the result of naturally growing tired of settling for less. As the years have passed and life experience has piled up, I’ve realized and accepted that I am no longer a young adult; I have to fully advocate for myself or I will not end up where I want to be. While some may come to this conclusion earlier in life, a late bloomer like me has found this realization freeing, but also one of great responsibility. With my 30s seemingly flying by, I must begin living. I can no longer cower and play small to placate cognitive distortions that have held me back for most of my life thus far.

Although this is an enormous first world problem, I’m no longer letting it slide or driving off resentfully when Bojangles doesn’t include the honey mustard I requested. When I don’t receive a product or service I paid for, I will speak up instead of swallowing the expense and inconvenience. I am allowed to speak up and crack a risky joke in team meetings at work, because maybe my most valuable traits have been hidden in my unique

sense of humor that I’ve been suppressing in an attempt to play it safe and be on my best behavior. If others are allowed to authentically show up in life, there’s nothing stopping me from following suit besides my own fears.

One of the biggest surprises I’ve encountered from my new tactic is that it’s actually working. When I speak up, I’m pleased with the outcome. I sit with the temporary discomfort of feeling “rude” or problematic by asserting my desires or needs and am often pleasantly surprised by the outcome. A large part of me mourns the years I spent unnecessarily suffering instead of tapping into this sooner, but everyone learns valuable life lessons on his or her own timeline. If avoidable, meaning you’re not someone like me who only learns through repeatedly being burned, take heed and don’t allow the fear of inconveniencing others or being a burden waste one more second of your valuable life.

Get Ahead of STRESS

My dear friend had just visited a doctor who specializes in infectious disease. She called, ready to fill me in:

Me: So, what did she say?

Friend: Well, get this: It’s not MRSA or any other nasty infectious disease. (Big pause.)

Me: Well, what IS it then?

Friend: Long story, but it’s STRESS.

Me: What? All those weird sores in your nose and outside of your nostrils? How can that be?

Friend: I know, right? She looked at my history – my vulnerabilities – and then started with the usual questions: How long have you been feeling stressed? Personal, professional or both? What have you done about it so far?

Me: Oh geez...she picked right up on the fact that it’s chronic; you’ve been running on empty, and your body is reacting in a big way.

Friend: Yep.

I hurt when someone I love hurts. You probably do as well. The best I could offer were my listening ears, my compassionate heart and my gently worded follow-up questions. I know my dear friend’s story. All of it. I also know that she does her best to stave off stress by doing what the experts recommend:

• Eating a healthy diet

• Engaging in daily physical activity

• Doing yoga

• Staying connected with others

• Praying or meditating

• Incorporating some “me” time

• Seeing the humor in things

Experiencing stress goes hand in hand with being human. But, there are times when stress is unrelenting – especially when it is in reaction to things, people or circumstances that cannot be changed. Such is the case with my friend. At least for right now. She will begin a course of medication to address her current symptoms and will continue to pursue the good habits that are already in place. And, she will condition herself to practice “The Four A’s of Stress Relief”: avoid, alter, accept, adapt.

UNDERSTANDING THE FOUR A’S OF STRESS RELIEF*

AVOID

Sometimes, it’s the little things that get under our skin. So, ask yourself: How can I make this situation a little less unpleasant or annoying? If you can’t change something, you can at least get creative about how you can work with it. Maybe you have a long commute to work. Can you change your hours to avoid the rush? If not, can you use that drive time to listen to books on tape, or maybe call your mother? Or, if that’s too stressful (sorry, Mom!), call a friend. If a co-worker is the stressor that gets under your skin, be polite and collaborative, but find ways to limit interaction. And, let’s not forget the power – and the appropriateness – of “no” when you are stretched too thin.

ALTER

Clearly state your expectations and your limitations. “I’m happy to sit with your kids once in a while when you need help, but I am not available every week.” I have a friend who likes to talk at length on the phone a few times a week. That doesn’t work for me, so I told her that I can commit to most Saturday afternoons and then try her during the week as well if I have time. Clarity minimizes mixed messages and hard feelings.

ACCEPT

Some things cannot be controlled or changed. Every one of us is faced with the challenge of learning how to live with this simple truth. We can lessen stress when we let out our feelings by talking to a friend or relative we trust. It can also be very beneficial to work with a therapist whose goal is to help you manage your stress. Acceptance also means being willing to forgive. Remember that, most of the time, you and others have done their best. Forgiveness lightens the burden as well as the stress.

ADAPT

Humans have survived and thrived by continually adapting. Think about how much you’ve adapted thus far! Successful adaptation involves learning to stop that “stressful situation tape in your head.” It also means letting go of perfectionism, focusing your attention on the good things in your life and, here and there, lightening the load you carry day to day. Maybe you lean into meals on repeat or ask for an extra hand or two with household chores. And, remember to take the long view by asking “How much does this matter in the scheme of things?”

Stop Overcomplicating Things!

Keep Your Goals Simple, Clear and Achievable: SUCCESS WITH SMART GOALS

As the first quarter of the year comes to a close, it’s the perfect time to pause, reflect and plan ahead. The beginning of a new year often comes with resolutions, fresh goals and new strategies!

You wonder, how long does it last? Studies show nearly 92% of people will not follow through on a resolution. As I dug deeper, I found out there is actually a concept called “Quitter’s Day.” Right, I was thinking the same thing...and guess what? It’s actually the second Friday in January! Yes, just two weeks.

I believe it’s because, as time passes, it’s easy to get caught up in the hustle of everyday life, drop the plan and forget to reassess. Here’s why planning at the end of the first quarter is crucial and how you can set yourself up for success in the upcoming months using SMART goals.

REVIEW YOUR GOALS AND PROGRESS

By the end of March, you’ve likely made significant strides toward your New Year’s goals – or perhaps, you’ve encountered obstacles. Some may have even quit! Don’t quit. This is your chance to assess where you stand and adjust if necessary.

1. STOP AND REVISIT YOUR GOALS.

Revisit the objectives you set at the start of the year. Are they still relevant? Have your priorities shifted? Sometimes, after a few months, our initial goals might need tweaking to better align with current circumstances or changing priorities. Don’t be afraid to adjust your goals to reflect what’s most important right now!

2. ASSESS YOUR PROGRESS.

Have you achieved the milestones you set for yourself? If not, what barriers did you face? Analyze what’s worked well and what hasn’t, so you can course correct.

3. MONITOR KEY METRICS.

Whether in business, personal finance, fitness or other areas, track your progress toward your goals. These measurements help identify trends and pinpoint areas where improvement is needed.

SET SMART GOALS FOR Q2

One of the best ways to set yourself up for success in the next quarter is to define SMART goals – specific, measurable, achievable, relevant and time-bound objectives. SMART goals give you clarity and focus, helping you stay on track and achieve more. Here’s how you can apply SMART goals:

Setting SMART goals for Q2 will help you break down your larger goals into smaller, more manageable tasks, making progress easier to track and measure. Remember, the key is not to overcomplicate things. Keep your goals simple, clear and achievable so you can stay motivated and make steady progress toward success. T R A M S T R A M S T A M S T R A M S

SSPECIFIC: Be clear and precise about what you want to achieve.

MMEASURABLE: Your goal should have quantifiable criteria.

AACHIEVABLE: Set goals that are challenging yet realistic. If your goal is too ambitious, you might lose motivation. Be sure your target is something you can reasonably accomplish within the set timeframe.

RRELEVANT: Ensure your goal aligns with your broader objectives and long-term vision. Ask yourself, “Will this goal move me closer to my larger purpose?”

TTIME-BOUND: Set deadlines for your goals. A clear timeframe creates a sense of urgency and helps you stay focused.

Detoxing the Drama in Your Life

Do you feel like drama follows you everywhere? Are you craving more peace in your life but don’t know where to start? Believe it or not, sometimes we unintentionally contribute to or enable the very chaos we want to avoid.

Many of us unknowingly fall into one of the roles in the Karpman Drama Triangle – the Persecutor, Rescuer or Victim. This psychological model explains how conflict often plays out in relationships, trapping us in patterns of blame, over-helping or feeling powerless. The first step toward breaking free is recognizing when you’re caught in this cycle and adjusting your behavior to disrupt it.

Reducing drama isn’t about avoiding problems – it’s about setting boundaries, managing emotions and choosing where to invest your energy. Here’s how you can detox the drama and reclaim more peace:

1. SET CLEAR BOUNDARIES

• Learn to Say “No” – Overcommitting to people or situations that drain you leads to stress and resentment. Protect your time and energy by saying “no” without guilt.

• Limit Time with Toxic People – Some people thrive on chaos, and if you’re not careful, they’ll drag you into it. Avoid drama queens and kings whenever possible.

• Protect Your Energy – Gossip, petty conflicts and emotional manipulation will only exhaust you. Be mindful of what you engage in.

2. MANAGE YOUR REACTIONS

• Pause Before Responding – When emotions run high, take a deep breath before reacting. A moment of pause can prevent unnecessary conflict.

• Don’t Take Everything Personally – Most of the time, people’s behavior is about them, not you. Choose not to internalize negativity.

• Let Go of Control – You can’t control others, but you can control how you respond. Shift your focus to what’s within your power.

3. IMPROVE COMMUNICATION

• Address Issues Directly & Calmly – Passive-aggressive behavior or venting to others only fuels drama. Instead, communicate openly and respectfully with the person involved.

• Avoid Gossip – When someone brings drama to you, don’t add fuel to the fire – redirect the conversation or disengage.

• Clarify Expectations – Miscommunication is a common source of unnecessary conflict. Be clear about what you expect and ask others to do the same.

4.

FOCUS ON WHAT MATTERS

• Pick Your Battles – Not every disagreement deserves your energy. Ask yourself: Is this really worth my time and stress?

• Prioritize Self-Care – A well-rested, balanced mind is less likely to be drawn into drama. Take care of yourself first.

• Surround Yourself with Positive People – Spend time with those who uplift and inspire you, and distance yourself from those who drain you.

5. LET GO OF THE PAST

• Forgive & Move On – Holding onto resentment only keeps drama alive. Letting go doesn’t mean excusing bad behavior – it means freeing yourself from its hold.

• Shift Your Focus – Instead of replaying problems, focus on solutions. Where your attention goes, your energy flows.

If drama keeps showing up in your life, ask yourself: Am I unintentionally inviting it? Recognizing and adjusting your patterns can create a more peaceful, drama-free life. The good news? You have the power to detox the drama and reclaim your calm – starting today.

TRELLIS SUPPORTIVE CARE

EMBRACING THE PRESENT & POISED FOR THE FUTURE

When Linda Darden steps away as CEO of Trellis Supportive Care this coming June, there will be bittersweet moments, lovingly accompanied by enormous pride.

“What we do is just so powerful,” she shares. “Being part of making this kind of care happen has been an honor. Plus, it’s a great comfort to know the organization is strong and that our longtime Chief Medical Officer, Dr. Michael Lalor, who is coming in as my successor, has a real knowledge of our culture.”

Linda holds a master’s degree in health administration from the Gillings School of Global Public Health at UNC–Chapel Hill, and is a CPA-Retired in the state of North Carolina. In addition to her work with Trellis Supportive Care, she is engaged at the state and national level to support advanced illness care with a focus on caring for the aging.

After 18 years with Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center, Linda began her tenure with Trellis Supportive Care in 2010, serving as both compliance and quality officer, and as senior vice president for clinical operations. She moved into the role of CEO in 2014.

“As a CEO, you’re obviously always looking down the road, but we also have to look closely at what we’re doing today,” she adds.

Many of those days that made up Linda’s past 11 years have featured some pretty special milestones.

“A definite highlight of my time as CEO has been the name change from Hospice & Palliative CareCenter to Trellis Supportive Care,” she explains. “We feel the rebranding launched in 2018 offers a more uplifting image – and a wider representation of the services we provide, including those in the home.”

In a mission that revolves around comfort and touch, the Covid pandemic provided an immense challenge that Linda feels the Trellis team faced with incredible grace under pressure.

“Seeing family members unable to visit loved ones was hard,” she says. “It was especially tough because we are all about offering comfort and support, to both patients and families, and we are BIG on hugs.”

Another milestone of her tenure, The Trellis Supportive Care Capital Campaign was completed in 2024 – providing for many updates and improvements to their KBR Hospice Home. Upgrades include smart beds that, among other things, can actually weigh patients right in the bed, and smart TVs that allow for full screen video chats with family members. Along with many other technological upgrades, Linda is proud Trellis is positioned very well for future success.

With plenty of personal moments and memories along the way, reading heartfelt comments from families has always been a much-needed bright spot for both Linda and the entire Trellis staff.

“After a hard day, reading those notes means the world to us,” she adds.

With roughly 300 employees, Linda knows those in administrative roles as well as those with direct patient care are proud to carry out this incredible mission.

“We invest a lot in making sure our staff is comfortable and connected,” she shares. “Trellis is positioned to be an employer of choice, committed to creating a culture of belonging for both our staff and prospective patients and families.”

Reflecting on the past 11 years, Linda feels she’s proudly brought a different perspective to the traditional CEO skill set.

“I hope future female leaders will be more quickly valued for their abilities, and I’ve tried to encourage and support other women in their leadership development,” she shares, hoping other female CEOs will do the same.

“Female leaders often suffer from imposter syndrome, fed by social discourse, and often – as I did – have to take salary cuts to navigate the direction of their careers. Women are underrepresented in higher level positions, and even more so, women of color. Each of us can reach back and lift up another woman!”

When her summertime retirement date arrives, Linda looks forward to more time with her friends and family – which includes two grown children – and she also expects to stay active in the community.

“From my Trellis experience, I will always carry with me the recognition of how important every day is – and the need to be present!”

Trellis Supportive Care is located in WinstonSalem at 101 Hospice Lane, 336.768.3972.

As the first Hospice provider in the state, Trellis remains the largest nonprofit Hospice center in the Triad – opening the Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home in 1998 to provide around the clock care to patients and families needing short-term inpatient or respite care. Visit trellissupport.org for more information, and follow them on Instagram @trellissupport.

Exceptional Young Women in the Community: Meet Aleyan Hayes

Spotlighting successful and stand-out women in the community is important to Forsyth Woman. With the help of LEAD Girls of NC, the Exceptional Young Women in the Community column helps spread the word about local youth and their positive impact on the world around them.

This month’s exceptional young woman, Aleyan Hayes, has been involved with LEAD Girls of NC since 2023. Her participation in LEAD has allowed her to gain confidence in herself and practice self-love—both of which are crucial for any 14-year-old in today’s social media-driven society.

One of Aleyan’s most memorable experiences with LEAD was the opportunity to support the community in need following the devastation caused by Hurricane Helene in September 2024. She and her peers assisted those affected by the hurricane by packing and sending necessities and supplies. She also holds fond memories of catching a T-shirt while attending an NC Courage women’s professional soccer game in Cary with her fellow LEAD friends. Due to her love for LEAD, she applied to become a LEAD Ambassador, and since being selected, she has made valuable connections and contributions.

Aleyan is a math whiz who loves listening to music by her favorite artist, Yebba. When she is not busy with LEAD or Crosby Scholars, she enjoys playing basketball and is well-versed in liturgical dancing. If she had to choose a local spot for dinner, she would take her family and friends to Arigato Japanese Steak & Seafood House or Olive Garden for a delicious meal. She also frequents stores like Forever 21, Aeropostale, Foot Locker, and Bath & Body Works while taking a spin around Hanes Mall in her spare time.

Her career aspirations include becoming a software engineer or computer scientist after majoring in engineering at her dream college, North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University. She hopes to one day vacation in Dubai but is content volunteering at football concession stands and serving as a mentor to young women in the meantime. In fact, she urges her peers

to always stay true to themselves, stand up for themselves, and love themselves first before loving someone else.

ABOUT LEAD GIRLS OF NC

Learning Everyday, Accomplishing Dreams (LEAD) Girls of NC is Winston-Salem’s beacon of hope for local young women. As a nonprofit organization supported by dozens of sponsors and grant-making organizations—including The Women’s Fund, the Winston-Salem Foundation, the J.H. Walker Legacy Foundation, and others—LEAD equips girls with the tools to succeed academically, professionally, and personally through its numerous programs. Young women involved with LEAD grow in confidence, social skills, and leadership abilities, setting them up to become successful entrepreneurs and fulfilled members of their community.

LEAD offers school-based programs at partner middle schools, as well as community-based programs available to any middle school students from local schools, held in person in downtown Winston-Salem. Topics covered through LEAD’s evidence-based curriculum include The Importance of Empathy, Dealing with Authority Figures, Exploring My Goals and Dreams, and Connecting with Each Other. These sessions emphasize awareness, communication, leadership, and perspective—LEAD’s four core fundamentals.

Each year, LEAD hosts numerous events to support the community and is currently planning its 2025 LEAD Girls Rising Expo, scheduled for October 25, 2025. According to the LEAD Girls of NC website, “After one semester with LEAD, 90% of participants recognize their good qualities, 87% feel confident about their future, and 100% believe they can be entrepreneurs.”

LEAD is always looking for new volunteers and welcomes support from the community. Learn more about LEAD’s mission and programs at www.leadgirls.org.

Everybody wants money, and it’s hard to accomplish many things without it. However, the unnerving dark side to attaining riches is falling into idolatry and believing money is power. The power lies in God’s authority and, as you partner with Him to build your business, it’s vital not to lose sight of your purpose. There’s nothing wrong with wanting to change your life, lifestyle and legacy with the uncapped revenue a business can bring but, as a child of God, there are divine purposes for what God wants to use the profit.

I’ve loved watching Shark Tank since the day it debuted and, before I had a better understanding, I was always shocked by how much money businesses spent just to keep running. Oftentimes, new businesses would be happy to break even after the fiscal year and the sharks found it acceptable when growing businesses made a net profit of 10% or less. I found myself thinking, “What is the point?”

Along the way in my business journey, God revealed to me the point is to bless the hands in my business and use profits to elevate lives and causes. Luke 12:33 says, “Sell your possessions and give to those in need. This will store up treasure for you in heaven! And, the purses of heaven never get old or develop holes. Your treasure will be safe; no thief can steal it and no moth can destroy it.”

A common question the sharks ask entrepreneurs is if the net profit was after paying themselves. Although they are likely asking these questions to gauge how quickly profit will come to them, wisdom tells us that God will always cover our needs, and we should see how much profit we can use for God’s Kingdom. Don’t be a money hoarder or let financial goals and possessions become a hindrance to giving generously. The treasure we store up in heaven will be better than anything Earth has to offer (Mark 10:21-23). Money comes and goes rapidly but not the riches of heaven. If you’re having a hard time believing this, think about how common it is to forget what you spent your money on last month but you can easily remember how you felt when someone thanked you for your generosity.

That’s proof of a healthy heaven bank account, and you should chase that value because it will never fade or fluctuate.

But, here’s the thing – God is so good that He still rewards us in our Earthly lives, too. We have all we need to live a blessed life and give to others. Remember, God created all the resources we have, and He knows how best to use them; so I pray we take the easy road and let God determine where our profits go as His omnipresence secures everyone’s future.

Hopefully, now you understand that, as a child of God, you’re not in business to take financial control of your life but to be included in the benefits He bestows on everyone involved in your business, and this includes money! You’re doing great, now go spread peace and joy through your profits. I have faith in you.

Books to Read in

Spring is a beautiful time of the year – bursting at the seams with new life and beginnings. But, when we think of books, we often think of cozy falls and winters sitting by the fire or nestled under a warm blanket with a cup of tea. Alternatively, we might think of a great beach read; the perfect novel to pack for our beach vacation. Spring seems to be an underrepresented seasonal theme in fiction. Even so, in this list of “springtime” books, we have conveyed all the elements of the season. A return to warmth, regrowth and renewal, being outdoors, hope, possibilities and happiness. Enjoy immersing yourself in some spring reading.

THE SECRET GARDEN

The first book that came to mind when thinking about books that just feel like spring was this children’s classic. It completely represents the themes of spring like beauty and blossoming, growth and renewal. I’ve reread it as an adult and am still amazed at its magic and charm.

Published in 1911, The Secret Garden tells the story of Mary Lennox, a young girl who loses her parents to sickness and is brought into the care of her curmudgeonly uncle. When Mary discovers an abandoned, overgrown secret garden on her uncle’s large estate, she begins to work on bringing it back to life which teaches her the value of hard work and patience. She shares the secret garden with her crippled cousin, who gains strength by being outdoors and helping to cultivate the garden.

OTHER BIRDS

The spring feelings this book conjures include birds chirping, forward movement and renewal, the beauty in the light of spring after a long, dark winter, and magic and hope. You will be transported to Mallow Island where a young woman has a fresh start before college when she moves into the condo she inherited from her mother (who passed when she was younger) on a tiny island with beautiful birds. Experience the warmth that results as they clear out the condo; and fall in love with the stories of the quirky character who you will really come to care about.

THE ENCHANTED APRIL

A beautiful 1920s novel that follows four women who have nothing in common except that they decide to travel to Italy together in April to escape their husbands and the dreary, rainy London spring. During their time in Italy, they share their struggles, they bond and they find love. You will be transported to a flowerfilled villa on the shores of the Mediterranean. These four women proceed to transform themselves and their prospects during their stay in Italy.

WHERE THE CRAWDADS SING

This is a classic coming-of-age novel published in 2018. The story is a beautiful immersion into the main character’s natural world and the life it provides. The story tells the heartbreaking tale of Kya, the “marsh girl” whose mother leaves when she is still a young child, followed by the departure of her older brothers and sisters, leaving Kya alone with her father, a veteran of the war who drinks his way through their small income and has unpredictable rages.

Kya learns to fend for herself, to hide from strangers, how to forage for food and find her way around the marsh. She learns to cook and how to be self-sufficient.

As the story progresses, we are pulled into Kya’s future. When a body is found in the marsh, with no witnesses and no evidence as to how it got there, the local townspeople seek someone to blame, and Kya’s strange life on the marsh falls under suspicion.

SENSE AND SENSIBILITY

Sense and Sensibility is the first of Austen’s novels. The story follows three sisters and their mother after the death of their father. Marianne Dashwood is a girl who wears her heart on her sleeve. She is young and full of life, and when she falls in love with the dashing but inappropriate John Willoughby, she ignores her sister Elinor’s warning that her reckless behavior leaves her open to gossip. Meanwhile, Elinor, always sensitive to social standards, is struggling to conceal her own romantic frustration, even from her family. Through their parallel experiences of love, the sisters learn that sense must be combined with sensibility if they are to find personal happiness in a society where status and money govern the rules of love.

SMASHBURGERS

This month, I wanted to share a spring/summer classic that is very quick and easy and sure to be a hit – smashburgers. They are super quick to make, so flavorful and you can make them at home on a pan or griddle for a fraction of the cost of a Five Guys, Smashburger, Shake Shack, etc.

These are great when cooking for a crowd with a limited amount of time to cook and, also, it only takes around 6-8 minutes total. You only need a few ingredients, but you can obviously tweak it to your liking and add anything on them! I love using the Snake River Farms American Wagyu ground beef from Harris Teeter for this – it’s only about $10 and so so good!

INGREDIENTS

(To serve two double smashburgers or four single burgers)

1 pound ground beef (80/20, American wagyu, whatever you like.)

Hamburger buns (or eat it on a lettuce bun if you’re watching carbs) – I prefer brioche

4 slices of preferred cheese

Cooking oil

Seasoning of choice (I always use a salt, pepper and garlic seasoning – Meat Church Holy Cow is my favorite for a burger)

Any other burger toppings you desire (I like adding a slice of bacon, some hatch chiles, butter lettuce and tomato)

INSTRUCTIONS

1. Heat your griddle (or cooking pan) to medium/medium-high heat.

2. Unpackage your ground beef and roll it into four evenly sized balls.

3. Once the cooking surface is hot, place the meat onto the surface and then place a piece of parchment paper on top, and press down on the meat with a burger press (or spatula, whatever works).

- Make sure you smash it all the way down to get it very thin and evenly thick.

5. Season the (smashed) burger patty.

6. Let cook for 3-4 minutes.

7. Flip the burger and immediately top with cheese.

- At this step, if you’re using a griddle/ blackstone and have the space to toast buns, you can butter them up and toast your buns while the cheese melts, or you can just toast them in the oven.

8. Let cook for another 3-4 minutes until the cheese is fully melted.

9. Pull them off, place on the buns and add the rest of your favorite burger toppings!

SPRING INTO BALANCE: HOW TO HARNESS HUNGER HORMONES FOR A HEALTHIER YOU

As spring arrives and warmer weather begins to take hold, it’s the perfect time to reset your health habits and embrace longer, sun-filled days. With more daylight and rising temperatures, getting outside becomes easier – and that’s great news for your hunger hormones. The changing season presents a natural opportunity to finetune your body’s appetite signals, boost metabolism and improve overall wellbeing. By understanding how hormones like MSH, Leptin, Ghrelin and CCK influence hunger, you can harness simple habits – like soaking up the morning sun – to feel your best as we transition into the season of renewal.

MSH: THE APPETITE REGULATOR AND SUNLIGHT CONNECTION

Melanocyte-stimulating hormone (MSH) might not be as well known as other hunger hormones, but it plays a crucial role in appetite regulation. Released from the pituitary gland, MSH helps suppress hunger, meaning higher levels can make it easier to eat in moderation. Interestingly, MSH is stimulated by exposure to natural sunlight, especially in the morning.

When we get morning sunlight, the UV rays trigger the release of MSH, leading to better appetite control and metabolic efficiency. This explains why people who spend time outdoors early in the day tend to have healthier eating patterns and improved weight regulation. Missing out on morning sun, on the other hand, can disrupt MSH levels, making it harder to naturally control hunger.

LEPTIN: YOUR FULLNESS SIGNAL

Leptin is produced by fat cells and acts as a signal to your brain that you have enough stored energy, reducing hunger. The problem? Many people become “leptin resistant,” meaning their brain stops responding to leptin’s fullness cues, leading to overeating and weight gain. Chronic inflammation, poor sleep and a diet high in processed foods can contribute to this resistance.

To enhance leptin sensitivity, focus on whole foods, high-protein meals and healthy fats. Prioritizing quality sleep is another gamechanger, as poor sleep reduces leptin levels while increasing hunger-stimulating hormones like ghrelin.

GHRELIN: THE HUNGER TRIGGER

If leptin tells you when to stop eating, ghrelin does the opposite – it tells you when it’s time to eat. Ghrelin is produced in the stomach and increases before meals, stimulating appetite. One interesting feature of ghrelin is its ability to anticipate food based on your eating habits. If you consistently eat at the same time each day, ghrelin release will follow that schedule.

Ghrelin levels spike when blood sugar drops, which is why eating highly processed, fast-digesting carbs can lead to frequent hunger. To regulate

ghrelin, focus on protein-rich meals, fiber and healthy fats, which provide sustained energy and keep hunger at bay. Additionally, fasting for extended periods can help reset ghrelin sensitivity, reducing constant cravings.

CCK: THE SATIETY BOOSTER

Cholecystokinin (CCK) is another appetite-suppressing hormone released from the gut in response to protein and fat intake. It signals to the brain that you’ve had enough to eat, reducing meal size and snacking urges. The problem? Many people don’t get enough high-quality protein and omega-3 fatty acids, which are key to stimulating CCK.

To maximize CCK levels, include protein and healthy fats in every meal – especially omega-3-rich foods like salmon, sardines and walnuts. Eating slowly and chewing thoroughly can also enhance CCK’s effects, as it gives your brain more time to register fullness.

THE POWER OF MORNING SUNLIGHT FOR HUNGER HORMONE BALANCE

Getting outside in the early hours of the day does more than wake you up – it actively supports hunger hormone balance. Here’s how:

• Boosts MSH: Encourages appetite regulation and reduces cravings.

• Supports Leptin Sensitivity: Aligns circadian rhythms for better sleep and hormone balance.

• Regulates Ghrelin: Morning sunlight reinforces natural eating patterns, reducing erratic hunger signals.

• Enhances CCK: By improving gut health and digestion, morning light supports proper satiety signaling.

As the days grow longer and temperatures rise, now is the perfect time to embrace small, intentional habits that support hunger hormone balance. Start your mornings with a few minutes of sunlight, nourish your body with whole foods and prioritize sleep to keep these powerful hormones working in your favor. Spring is a time of renewal, and by optimizing MSH, Leptin, Ghrelin and CCK, you’ll set yourself up for a season of sustained energy, healthy appetite control and improved metabolic health.

Leveraging Your Strengths

to Elevate Your Success

Did you know that when you spend more time working in your areas of strength, you’re likely to be happier, more productive and more successful? It seems obvious, yet many of us don’t actively seek out ways to align our work and life with what we do best. Instead, we get caught up in fixing weaknesses, stretching ourselves too thin or simply going through the motions without tapping into our natural talents.

So, how do you identify and leverage your strengths to create a more fulfilling and productive life?

STEP 1: DISCOVER YOUR STRENGTHS

Before you can fully utilize your strengths, you first need to identify them. Here are some ways to do that:

1. Take Assessments

One of the most effective ways to uncover your strengths is through structured assessments. My personal favorite is the Working Genius Model and Assessment by Patrick Lencioni and his team. This tool helps individuals and teams identify their natural talents and frustrations within the context of how work gets done. Understanding where you naturally excel can help you make adjustments that lead to greater engagement and productivity.

2. Self-Reflection

Take time to reflect on the following questions:

• What tasks come easily to me?

• What activities energize me?

• What drains my energy?

• Where have I excelled in school, work or personal projects?

• For what have people consistently praised me?

Your answers can provide valuable clues about your strengths and the areas where you naturally thrive.

3. Seek Feedback

Sometimes, others see our strengths more clearly than we do. Ask trusted friends, colleagues or mentors for their perspectives. You might be surprised at what they recognize in you! While you’re at it, ask them about areas where you could improve – awareness of both strengths and weaknesses can help you navigate your career and life more effectively.

4. Evaluate Your Job Performance

Take an honest look at your current role. In what aspects of your job do you consistently excel? What tasks do you struggle with or avoid? This evaluation can help you determine how aligned your role is with your natural abilities.

STEP 2: APPLY YOUR STRENGTHS

Once you’ve identified your strengths, the next step is to actively apply them in your work and daily life. Here’s how:

• Have a conversation with your boss. Share your strengths and discuss ways you might incorporate them more into your role. Employers value engaged, high-performing employees, so they may be open to adjustments that allow you to contribute at your best.

• Find ways to work around your weaknesses. If a certain task is not in your wheelhouse, can you delegate or collaborate with someone who has that strength? If not, work toward proficiency, but don’t drain yourself trying to be great at everything.

• Align your career with your strengths. If your job consistently forces you to work outside of your natural talents, it may be time for a change. A role that better matches your strengths will feel more fulfilling and allow you to make a bigger impact.

THE POWER OF STRENGTH-BASED LIVING

When you focus on leveraging your strengths instead of fixing weaknesses, you set yourself up for greater success, motivation and job satisfaction. By identifying what you do best and actively finding ways to use those talents, you can create a more fulfilling career and life – one where you feel energized, confident and in your element every day.

Ideas for Grown Ups

When the weather warms up and flowers begin to bloom, a week of uninterrupted fun seems like just what the doctor ordered! We’ve survived the gloominess of January and February and, just like restless school kids and college students, we deserve some fun in the sun, too! So, here are some great destinations to consider. Grown up Spring Break…here we come.

FOLLY BEACH, SOUTH CAROLINA

Charleston is a big player when it comes to southern vacation destinations, but lowcountry locals know that Folly Beach is a true gem. Skip the crowds in the fancier locations and set up your own personal refuge on Folly Beach’s sandy shores. You can break out your fishing gear for an afternoon of fishing at the Folly Beach Pier (the east coast’s second largest fishing pier), watch surfers battle the waves or kayak through the serene tidal creeks. See why Folly Beach is known as the Edge of America.

NEW ORLEANS, LOUISIANA

The Crescent City is a party city regardless of what time of year you visit, but spring is perfect for an adult spring break. Choose your level of celebration, then balance your revelry with a plush stay at a hotel like the Ritz-Carlton, Maison de la Luz, Roosevelt or Four Seasons. Spend your days exploring the French Quarter, beginning with a stroll around the always-scenic Jackson Square and an order of beignets at Café du Monde. Top festivals in the city include French Quarter Fest and Jazz Fest. And, if you’re feeling adventurous, you can hit festivals outside the city like the Ponchatoula Strawberry Festival or the Louisiana Crawfish Festival. There’s a party every night on Bourbon and neighboring streets.

SAVANNAH, GEORGIA

This vacation location is covered in Spanish moss and endorsed with an abundance of arts and culture. The 19th century history of Savannah is visible in historic buildings and homes and plenty of museums. It’s a great place for a walking tour! After an afternoon of exploring, settle in at one of the many restaurants offering wonderful coastal cuisine.

Steps from the water and housed in one-time cotton warehouses, there are more than 75 boutiques, galleries, artists’ studios, restaurants and pubs located on Savannah’s River Street. You may also see passengers boarding steamboats on the Savannah River.

If you can’t have spring break without the beach, Tybee Island is Savannah’s Beach. This coastal landmark has stood the test of time for more than 400 years. You’ll come to love the locals who help to make this tightknit community a place to call home.

WASHINGTON, D.C.

Visit the District during this time of year, and you’ll find the nation’s capital is accented in pink for the National Cherry Blossom Festival, which holds events from March to April.

If you love politics or U.S. history, visit the Capitol Building or check out the Lincoln Memorial. Washington D.C. is home to more than 70 museums, including the National Museum of Natural History, the National Museum of the American Indian and the National Museum of African American History and Culture.

If you prefer to spend your days walking in front of gorgeous waterfront views, head over to Georgetown. After a busy day of shopping, you can choose from dozens of spectacular restaurants.

ST. AUGUSTINE, FLORIDA

If you’re considering a trip to St. Augustine, you are more likely interested in a laid-back vacation. Over spring break, that calm vibe doesn’t really change. Take a trip to one of historic St. Augustine’s outdoor attractions. The Fountain of Youth has 15 acres of history with wandering peacocks, replica structures and lots to learn – all right on the water. At Colonial Quarter, everyone gets to experience the history of St. Augustine by interacting with a blacksmith, gunsmith and leatherworker. You’ll be hands on and surrounded by the history of the last three centuries of St. Augustine, both educational and fun. There are tons of unique things to do such as the Pirate and Treasure Museum and The Old Jail. There is always the opportunity to get up close and personal with marine life while sailing, kayaking or boating in St. Augustine.

In Defense of Long Distance

“I really like you, but I can’t do long distance.”

I’ve heard it, I’ve agreed with it and I’ve probably even said it. One of the biggest detriments to a relationship is living far enough away that it’s challenging to see each other consistently. Even the impending idea of long distance can be fatal.

As a long distance survivor myself, I am here to say they can work. My boyfriend of four years, Henry, and I lived three and a half hours apart for the first two years of our relationship. Now, we live around one and a half hours apart.

I write to you now in defense of long distance relationships. They can work and are worth it. Sometimes, it’s worth trusting your gut (in this case, your heart) with what feels like the right decision for your relationship.

HAVE SEPARATE LIVES

The most seamless time of our long distance era was when I was studying abroad in Prague, Czech Republic and he remained in Blacksburg, Virginia for five months. It sounds counterintuitive, but we actually did the best job creating lives separate from one another when we were the furthest apart physically.

While in Prague, I grew extremely close with the five girls I lived with, and we traveled together almost every weekend. Back at school, Henry had a strong social life within his fraternity, and his schoolwork slowed down. We made time for calling when we could without a set schedule, but I believe

it was not difficult because we were so preoccupied – I took advantage of the finite time I had abroad while he made the most of his senior year.

As I think back, it’s probably better to have been forced to develop separate lives and independence in the beginning of our relationship. We avoided the temptation of seeing one another every day during the honeymoon phase which can lead to tiffs within friendships and the unavoidable “this is moving too fast” discussion. That kind of escalation is difficult to tone back so, in hindsight, a long distance relationship can force a level of healthy separation.

LET’S TALK

It can be frustrating not being able to kiss and make up after an argument over the phone or grab dinner after a difficult day, but that’s part of the deal. If you’re the kind of person who really values consistent closeness, physical or otherwise, distance will pose an obvious challenge. This frustration that has come with not being able to see one another has a positive side, too – the development of clear communication. Saying exactly what’s on your mind is hard, but long distance engrains that skill.

CONSIDER DISTANCE

Now, the question of the hour, should you pursue a long distance relationship? Unfortunately, there’s no right answer to that. I will remind you of this – people break up even when they aren’t also navigating distance. I am not here to convince you to jump immediately into a long distance

relationship, but maybe see the possibility of something that was considered a nonstarter.

There is a beautiful side to distance, as well. Before it’s even said out loud, written in between the lines it states: “I like you enough that I want to be with you when we’re far apart, and I see enough potential that we’ll one day live in the same place.” The likelihood of the perfect person living right next door? Slim to none.

If it feels right, it’s worth pursuing. If it doesn’t work, that’s okay, too. In defense of long distance, the important thing is that if it feels like it’s worth a try, that’s rarely regretted.

Conversation with Your BFF

Blame is a powerful tool that some people will use to manipulate you. They’ll make you question yourself and your motives, all while taking any responsibility off of themselves. When someone blames you for things that aren’t your fault, it can create a toxic environment, leading to feelings of guilt, frustration and confusion. So, “how can I know if I am being accused of things I didn’t do, or am I really responsible?” I am so glad you asked!

DEAD GIVEAWAYS YOU AREN’T TO BLAME

“I wouldn’t have yelled if you didn’t make me so angry!”

If someone shifts the responsibility for their anger and outburst onto you, it suggests that their reaction is a direct consequence of your actions, disregarding their own control over their actions. Everyone has to take responsibility for themselves, and they can’t always blame others!

“If you’d reminded me, I wouldn’t have forgotten!”

How many times has someone said this to us? By saying this, they refuse to take responsibility for their own forgetfulness, instead placing the burden on you to manage their own memory. It’s not your fault, so don’t accept it.

“You’re making me look bad in front of other people!”

This is a move to gaslight you and make you second guess yourself. Manipulation at its finest! This comment is suggesting that your actions are intentionally designed to embarrass or humiliate them, deflecting attention from their own behavior or shortcomings. I’ve had this happen many times and have fallen for it more than I should have.

“You should’ve known I’d react this way!”

First, remember you can’t read minds! Implying that it is your responsibility to anticipate another’s reactions and adjust your behavior accordingly is irrational. There is and always will be an unpredictability in human responses to any situation. Period!

“After everything I have done for you, this is how you treat me?”

Guilt tripping and leveraging past favors is a nasty way to blame someone. Implying that you owe someone unquestioning compliance because of a past favor is the

“Am I Really at Fault or Am I Being Falsely Accused?”

height of gaslighting, so don’t fall for it. Call it out when you recognize it!

THE IMPACT OF BLAME SHIFTING

Being subjected to constant blame shifting can erode your self esteem and create an environment where you feel you must constantly defend yourself. There are ways to best respond to those who are chronic blame shifters in your life.

RECOGNIZE THE PATTERN

Recognizing previously discussed phrases can help you recognize when someone is deflecting responsibility. Stay tuned in and know when you aren’t the problem.

SET BOUNDARIES

Clearly communicate that you will not accept blame for things outside your control. Firm boundaries can deter further blame shifting. If someone knows you are on guard and knows that you recognize their attempts to deflect blame, they may think twice before trying their deception again.

STAY CALM

Remember that if you react emotionally, you lose control over the situation, so stay calm and reasonable.

Understanding and addressing blame shifting behavior is important for maintaining healthy relationships and protecting your emotional well being. By recognizing these patterns, you can take steps to assert your boundaries and ensure that blame is fairly distributed.
