AN INTERVIEW WITH AMBER WOODALL

YOU WENT TO SCHOOL FOR ART, RIGHT? WHAT MADE YOU CHOOSE HAIR?

I studied fine arts and business in college. I’d been doing “kitchen hair” since I was a kid and had always been fascinated with color theory and contrast. Once I realized I could apply those things to hair and be financially independent, everything just clicked.

WHAT MADE YOU DECIDE TO OPEN YOUR OWN HAIR SALON?

I was exposed to business early on as my stepdad owned a small business and I’d volunteered in many industries as a teenager. After working for different salons and witnessing as many bad business practices as there were good, I felt inspired to build a salon that took the best out of my previous experiences and eliminated the bad. My driving goal was to provide a better work environment and stronger career opportunities for beauty professionals and staff.

YOU RETIRED FROM BEHIND THE CHAIR LAST YEAR. WHY?

Yes, and it was an extremely difficult decision. I was dealing with chronic health issues that were exasperated by common beauty ingredients. I also wanted more time to focus on restructuring the salon and making it scalable. But also, I love doing hair! Ultimately, I finally chose to put my health first.

SPEAKING OF BEHIND THE CHAIR, WE HEARD YOU’RE OPENING YOUR BOOK ON A LIMITED BASIS…

Yes, and I’m so excited! I’m opening my book two times a month, which will give me a much needed creative outlet while still allowing me to focus on my business. This wouldn’t be possible without the new line I just added to Alkali—Back of Bottle (Bob)—a product that won’t trigger my autoimmune disease and still performs great!

WHAT SERVICES ARE YOU MOST EXCITED ABOUT DOING?

I’m most excited about haircutting and extensions because I miss doing technically precise work. Haircutting has always been my foundation but the extension world is so innovative.

YOU ALSO HAVE A SPA COMPONENT AND ARE EXPANDING THIS PART OF YOUR BUSINESS. WHAT MADE YOU DECIDE TO OPEN ALKALI BEAUTY LAB?

For a lot of the same reasons as the hair studio, really. As an aging consumer, I’ve found it hard to find the level of care Alkali provides in the spa and medspa world. I prefer natural looks and ask a lot of questions. Not every provider is patient or knowledgeable enough to make me feel comfortable. Let’s face it, we’re all balancing our exposure to toxins and weighing pluses and minuses. A provider with extra ingredient knowledge really helps you make an informed decision.

OUTSIDE OF BEAUTY, WHAT DO YOU LIKE TO DO FOR FUN?

I love to paint and draw—it’s been my favorite hobby ever since I can remember. I also enjoy gardening, horseback riding, music, and I’m a huge foodie, especially when traveling!

This cover perfectly embodies a philosophy I hold dear – community over competition. I’ve had the privilege of connecting with so many inspiring business owners who embrace this mindset. We’re all in this together, and collaboration not only benefits us individually, but strengthens the entire community, as well. Lastly, I can’t let October slip by without reminding you about the importance of mammograms. Breast cancer doesn’t wait for October, and you shouldn’t either. Early detection is key, and I’m so thankful that the survival rate for breast cancer continues to rise. As someone whose mom and grandmother are both two-time breast cancer survivors, this cause is especially near to my heart.

Osteoporosis and Pilates

At Inner Strength Pilates, we want our clients to have a foundational education about their bodies and how to safely handle the regular activities of their lives. We strive for our clients to be empowered to confront their health issues, have the skills to modify tasks as needed and understand that any exercise program they currently participate in will likely need to be modified. For best results, work with someone specifically trained in osteoporosis to help you get moving safely. At ISP, we have Healthy Spine classes designed for those with osteoporosis and other spinal issues. We adapt our classes to include the latest research to provide the best possible outcomes for our clients, helping our clients remain independent as long as possible.

To begin, you’ll have private sessions, during which we will prioritize education and how to best protect from fracture. You’ll learn why risky movements should be avoided, including bending forward, side bending and deep rotation. We will address pain and faulty movement patterns and navigate healthy spine strategies such as neutral spine and hip hinge. We know

that movement is medicine. The key is knowing what movement is best for your body.

You’ve likely heard weight-bearing exercise is best, but where to begin? Your muscular system needs weight resistance to support the joints. Your skeletal system needs impact to stimulate bone growth. Dynamic balance work is crucial to avoid falls.

Strength train to improve physical function by incorporating strengthening moves that include pulling, pushing, squatting, hinging, reaching and carrying. Including these motions will ensure you address the whole body as you strengthen. The posture you carry into these movements is critical since it isn’t just the amount of weight that is lifted, but how the weight is lifted that determines fracture risk. Kyphosis (rounding of the upper back) often accompanies osteoporosis. Loading the kyphotic spine with weight will, at best, reinforce the kyphosis present and, at worst, risk fracture. Many factors influence the vertebrae’s ability to withstand load – the integrity of the discs, alignment of the vertebrae, the strength of the surrounding musculature and any degeneration present. We work to improve alignment first, then strengthen from there.

Pilates can be a greatly beneficial form of exercise for individuals with osteoporosis, as it focuses on strengthening core muscles, improving posture, improving balance and enhancing flexibility. Pilates uses springs as resistance training, as the spring is under graduated tension as it is stretched. The process loads the tissues safely to avoid injury, using controlled movements, before increasing intensity and range of motion. We strengthen through joint range of motion so that you are strong within your flexibility.

High intensity impact training research shows the best results to stimulate bone growth in post-menopausal women. Impact training at an appropriate intensity for your fitness level needs to be determined. We strive to strike a balance between the impact needed to create bone growth while moving at a pace for the safety of the individual to reduce the fall risk. Those unable to perform high impact movements can benefit

from the simulated high impact of our cardio classes and vibration plate.

Dynamic balance should also be included in your routine, as fractures often happen when one loses balance and falls. Recovering from a misstep or being able to change directions quickly, such as when a pet runs in front of you, is imperative. Fractures following a fall statistically lead to decreased mobility, increased pain, loss of independence and loss of physical and social capacity. Our number one rule – stay on your feet!

While any physical activity is encouraged and helpful to some extent, bone building activates under force and load. Low impact, low intensity exercise certainly has its place such as walking, water aerobics or yoga, but make sure to additionally include osteoporosis-specific work several times weekly.

With factors in place such as proper nutrition, activity levels, supplementation based on testing, hormone optimization based on need and added stimulation, the environment is set to grow bone. Set up habits that cultivate growth in each of these areas. For a multi dimensional approach, you’ll be best suited to have a team in place from a holistic perspective. Though the goal is to improve bone density, maintaining density is still a win.

Pancetta & Italian Herb Arancini

Creamy Italian risotto stuffed with herb mozzarella, battered in breadcrumbs, then fried until crispy and golden. Pancetta & Italian Herb Arancini is one of the best Italian appetizers you’ll ever make this holiday season!

Servings: 12-14 Prep Time: 20 minutes Cook Time: 30 minutes

Rest Time: 1 Hour Total Time: 1 hour and 50 minutes

INGREDIENTS

1 T Olive Oil

4 oz. Pancetta, finely chopped

1 Yellow Onion, finely chopped

4 Garlic Cloves, minced

1 cup Chardonnay, or a dry white wine

2 cups Risotto, uncooked

5 cups Chicken Broth or 4 cups broth and 1 cup water

INSTRUCTIONS

1 tsp. Fine Sea Salt ¼ cup Fresh Basil, chopped 6 oz (1 ½ cups) Italian Herb Shredded Mozzarella

3 large Eggs, beaten 1 cup All Purpose Flour 2 cups Panko Breadcrumbs Neutral Oil, for frying

1. In a large pot over medium high heat, add the olive oil, pancetta, onions and garlic. Sauté until pancetta is crispy and onions are almost caramelized, about 6-8 minutes.

2. Add the white wine and risotto. Stir to combine, then cook until the wine has been absorbed by the risotto, about 2-3 minutes.

3. Add the broth and cover to simmer on LOW heat for 15-20 minutes, until risotto is cooked.

4. Stir in the freshly chopped basil, then transfer to a roasting pan to spread out evenly. Cover and let chill in the fridge at least 2 hours to overnight.

5. Slice into 12-14 equal squares.

6. Using the palm of your hands, place a tablespoon of the shredded mozzarella into the center of each square. Press the edges together to tightly seal in the cheese and shape into a ball-like shape.

7. Set aside in the freezer while you prep the frying oil and battering station.

8. Heat up the frying oil to 350 degrees F.

9. Set up a battering station with three bowls. Add the flour to the first bowl, the beaten eggs to the second and the breadcrumbs to the third.

10. Dredge each risotto ball in the flour, then coat in the beaten eggs and then dredge in the breadcrumbs.

11. Working in batches of 3-4 arancini, fry until deeply golden, about 4-5 minutes.

12. (Optional) Place in the oven on a baking pan at 400 degrees F for 5-10 minutes to ensure the cheese is melted inside. To keep warm, keep the oven at 325 degrees F for up to 20 minutes.

13. Enjoy warm with parmesan cheese and flaky sea salt garnished on top!

PEOPLE OF PROMINENCE SERIES

Carson Parry Tucker & Pearl Monroe Tucker

The “People of Prominence” series was originally formulated to spotlight a variety of local unsung heroes from all walks of life. To date, these people have been adults from a variety of industries and pursuits. The idea was to interview these people of prominence and, in turn, have them nominate someone they felt should be spotlighted for their courage, their selflessness or their accomplishments in the face of adversity.

I have decided to interject and provide my own nomination for the “People of Prominence” series this month. Carson Parry Tucker (CP below) and Pearl Monroe Tucker (PM below) represent the spirit of this series like none other. They are sisters and warrior princesses of prominence who have risen and fallen together whilst ultimately standing victorious with lovely smiles.

Carson Parry is the big sister to Pearl Monroe (“Roe Roe”). Carson Parry is the quieter sister who has played the selfless role of defender of Roe Roe who was diagnosed in the fall of 2019 with acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL).

Carson Parry is the one who observes, who clearly wears a maternal badge with sophistication unlike any other 5th grader. She is a fierce advocate and protector of her little sister. There are certain children you can look at and readily see the adult they will become. That older version of themselves will be well loved, respected and admired for their endless bounty of intelligence, courtesy and thoughtfulness.

Pearl Monroe (as she prefers these days instead of the nickname “Roe Roe”) rang the bell at Brenner Children’s Hospital two years ago on her 6th birthday to celebrate the end of her cancer treatments. Pearl Monroe is a golden firecracker shooting sparks of personality and vigor with a musicality that echoes in her every movement and smile. She is someone cancer should never have picked on in the first place. She is laden with a charm and strength that would level any foe. The sisterly bond fortified each girl’s steadfast

survival instinct, and they continue to hold tightly and warmly to each other.

TELL US ABOUT YOURSELVES. WHAT IS IMPORTANT TO YOU?

CP: Having all my friends is very important to me. I like tennis. I like to sing any style of music. I am having fun with cheerleading, and I love to read.

PM: I think having good friends is important, too. I enjoy all my classes, especially math; I like doing multiplication. Playtime at recess is fun. Just being outside on a trampoline and playing all day is great. I like performing on stage with singing or dancing.

TELL US WHAT ANYONE NEEDS TO HAVE TO MAINTAIN HAPPINESS AND JOY.

CP: It is important to have love for everybody. I think being kind is really something that is important.

PM: Everyone should be helpful to each other. I just believe that being nice is what everyone needs.

WHAT IS YOUR DEFINITION OF A HERO? TELL US ABOUT WHAT QUALITIES HEROES YOU KNOW HAVE.

CP: Anyone who has gone through something hard and come through. I would say someone like my sister who is sassy.

PM: Friends who are fighting cancer are heroes. I love the experiences we have had building playsets for these friends and their siblings.

Here, Pearl Monroe is referring to their work with Roc Solid which is a foundation that builds hope for families fighting cancer. Pearl Monroe and Carson Parry participated in building playsets for these families and were also the recipients of a playset during Pearl Monroe’s treatment. At the end of the construction of a playset, all participants sign the playset with a note of encouragement meant to lift the recipient’s spirit. Reading these notes buoyed both sisters during such a dark time.

DO YOU HAVE ANY WORDS OF WISDOM TO ANYONE WHO IS GOING THROUGH SIMILAR CHALLENGES AS YOU BOTH DID DURING PEARL MONROE’S BATTLE?

CP: Don’t ever give up. I feel like I have always been strong, and I was the same through it all. I would tell people who are going through this fight with cancer that it won’t last forever. You are always loved and cared for.

PM: You will get better. You will be healed even in very tough times. I was always very sensitive, but this made me get stronger and stronger. Faith is important; faith in Jesus; pray for friends.

The arduous, unfathomable journey for these girls has shaped these sisters into bold reflections of each other. They are unwavering in their gratitude for experiences like meeting Dolly Parton this year at Dollywood after holding up a sign for her to see. The sign simply read, “Dolly: Your music helped me beat cancer.” The battle against leukemia has provided Carson Parry and Pearl Monroe with experiences of a lifetime that have cemented their bond even in the unwelcome face of adversity. Their simple, profound answers in this interview showcase the life lessons of love, selflessness, resolve and familial bonds that make life worth celebrating.

REJUVENATING WITH SCULPTRA

One popular featured service on the Renewal Med Spa menu is Sculptra, an FDA-approved injectable that rejuvenates collagen among cheeks and smile lines by addressing multiple underlying causes of aging.

Nurse injectors Joy Goins, RN, and Heather Hayden, RN, are excited to share the details of this bio-stimulatory dermal filler that works in a different way than Botox. While dermal fillers are made of hyaluronic acid, Sculptra is made from poly-L-lactic acid, or PLLA, which works by gradually stimulating your own skin to produce new collagen growth.

“Using Sculptra will help increase volume, improve skin quality and health, and delay aging by creating radiance, tightness and contour to the treatment areas,” explains Joy.

As the “glue” that helps our skin maintain its structure and shape, collagen production is important!

“As we age, the amount of collagen our skin produces slows down significantly, which can lead to sagging skin, volume loss, fine lines and wrinkles,” says Joy. “Collagen damage can also be caused by lifestyle habits such as smoking, exposure to UV rays and a diet high in sugar and refined carbohydrates.”

Although we can change our daily habits, collagen will naturally decline as we age. Studies have shown that, by age 45, most people may have lost up to 45% of collagen.

Sculptra is normally injected into the cheek area and lower half of the face, as loss of collagen and volume to the cheeks leads to deep nasolabial folds and marionette lines. It’s important to restore volume to the cheeks to give natural results, as cheeks are also responsible for supporting the skin under our eyes. Sculptra may even be injected into the temples to assist with volume loss. Injectables offer an effective treatment option for weightloss patients as they can gradually restore facial contours for more natural results.

While mild discomfort is possible during the procedure, a topical numbing cream can be applied to injection areas prior to treatment. The injectable is also mixed with a local anesthetic, so once injections begin, a numbing effect should begin to take place quickly.

“Our office also offers Pronox which is an FDA-approved analgesia gas to help with pain relief and anxiety, and patients are able to safely drive home after Pronox use,” Joy explains. “The treatment itself usually lasts no longer than 20 minutes. During the very first treatment, a patient will typically have two vials injected, returning for a second and third treatment after about four weeks.”

There can be mild to moderate bruising after treatment, so patients are sent home with Arnica, a homeopathic medication which helps with bruising and swelling, and taught the appropriate massage technique to deter nodules from forming after treatment.

“This is a 5-5-5 approach, meaning a moderate massage will be done at home by the patient five times a day, for five minutes, for five days,” says Heather. “Your provider will instruct you how to do this and send you home with an ice pack to use as needed.”

The full effect of Sculptra typically takes about three months for patients to notice – with a change in their skin plumpness – but patients will typically notice a beautiful “Sculptra glow” shortly after the first treatment.

“Skin should appear smoother and firmer with an overall glow. Sculptra results usually last up to two years, but we recommend a maintenance injection be done annually,” says Heather.

While most patients are candidates for Sculptra, there are certain conditions that prohibit treatment including current oral herpes or a similar infection, uncontrolled diabetes, issues with blood clotting, lupus or other connective tissue disorders, an allergy to any components of Sculptra Aesthetic or patients who are pregnant or breastfeeding.

WHERE DO I BELONG?

Is it just me, or are we walking among a sea of people who don’t know who they are or where they belong?

I honestly don’t recall a time folks struggled this intensely to find their place in the world.

WHAT HAPPENED?!

For starters, the shutdowns impacted folks in ways we still haven’t fully identified. Young people avoided face-to-face conversations BEFORE COVID. Tragically, months of separation solidified this digital preference, further weakening social interactions.

Even adults grew so accustomed to working from home that many employees threatened to quit if forced to return to the office…with people.

Ah, the people business…it’s a messy, complicated ordeal, isn’t it? You don’t know who to trust and who to avoid. It’s difficult to discern who gets you and who is out to get you. (WHEW!) How can you know your place in it all?

Let’s talk zebras. Stay with me. I promise we’re going somewhere.

How in the world do zebras establish what sets them apart from others? They all look alike! How do they figure out where they belong and to whom they belong?

Did you know that every zebra is uniquely different? Yes! God made their stripes as one-of-a-kind as our fingerprints! But, just like we don’t discern our fingerprint distinctions by casual observance, zebras cannot readily recognize variations in their stripes, either. Consequently, they remain extremely unsure of themselves, UNLESS…

…get this. At a baby zebra’s birth, the mama takes her newborn to a secluded place for the first few days. Before exposing the foal to other zebras, this mama ensures that her little one becomes unquestionably familiar with her stripes. It’s imperative that this baby never gets confused about where and to whom it belongs. The mama also imprints upon her newborn the exact texture of her voice, even her distinctive scent.

Once this baby zebra knows with certainty to whom it belongs, it is empowered to walk among masses of zebras without any confusion or hesitation whatsoever. That time alone with the one who gave it life ensures it will never mistake another zebra for its mother or another herd for its herd.

In a world struggling to find belonging, Jesus invites us to step out of life’s traffic with Him each new day. As we do, The One who knows us best and loves us most reminds us to Whom we belong. We recognize His voice, and we absorb His heart in all matters. From this knowledge, we realize where we fit and find our truest sense of self.

I surely don’t get it all right, but I am wise enough to know that those moments with Jesus, each new morning, bring clarity and contentment. I don’t wander into life’s traffic to find myself. I know who I am when I get there. It determines how I engage others. I know to whom I belong, so I never feel lost. In fact, from this knowledge, I get to help others find their truest selves, too!

God made you all by Himself. He made you uniquely for Himself. You don’t need to follow the crowd to discover where you fit. Instead of finding your true identity there, you’ll just start looking like everyone else.

Get away with Jesus, then walk assured of who you are and where you belong in this world!

“You Need a Hobby” Why Moms Should Stop Rolling Their Eyes at This Advice

After my husband and I welcomed our first child and fought our way out of the newborn trenches (all while surviving a global pandemic), there was a new narrative with which I was greeted. Despite all of my behind-the-scenes glimpses into motherhood shared by my sister and friends, I was somehow unprepared for it.

It was simple, yet a little disarming; “you should really find a hobby.”

My brows would pinch together every time someone said this to me in conversation or I came across a TikTok video sharing the same sentiment.

Make time for yourself. Find something just for you. Get back in touch with your identity.

What is this “time” of which they speak? Does the 20-minute mindless scrolling break that I take post shower with my towel on my head sprawled across my bed not count? And, what if I don’t want to get “back in touch” with my identity and instead embrace this new one? She’s pretty cool minus the dark undereye circles and Mrs. Rachel playing on blast in the car.

THE ASSUMPTION

Here’s the thing; I had hobbies before I became a mom. I mean wild, crazy things like thrifting and crafting and going on

bakery crawls in search of the best locally made croissants. I still loved those things as a new mom, but why didn’t the world understand that my current favorite hobby was getting time to myself to watch “Gilmore Girls” for the 20th time? Whenever a mother hears “you should get a hobby,” it’s like the world is telling her she can’t possibly be fulfilled with what her time is currently being spent doing, be it our parenting, homes or careers. I think a lot of us get defensive and feel like we’re either “beyond” hobbies or simply can’t imagine having the time or energy to spend on them – let alone desire to.

THE REALITY

Whatever season of motherhood we find ourselves in, there are parts of us that crave connection to the things we love – beyond our work and family. What if it’s really our partners, friends and random TikTok creators reminding us that we’re allowed to have frivolous fun in whatever way, shape or form we want? Maybe there’s a hobby you want to revisit or try out something new? Maybe it’s something solo you can stay up late doing when the little ones are asleep or a weekly hobby you do with friends? The reality is, embracing a hobby could actually be rejuvenating in ways you didn’t realize.

THE TRUTH

It wasn’t until last April when my husband picked me up a trending little fantasy novel called A Court of Thorns and Roses, that my “I don’t need a hobby” eyes were opened. I used to read voraciously in college, and I barely read anything anymore. He surprised me with the book on a Friday, and by the following Friday, I had devoured the entire series – five novels to be exact. The next week, I picked up two more reads; a month later I bought a Kindle; six months in, I joined a romance book club; and by December, I had read 119 books.

And here’s what I learned:

Hobbies give us a sense of self. Suddenly, there was this thing I loved doing that was only for me. It wasn’t out of obligation for work or service to my amazing family. I hadn’t realized how important it was to have something that lit me up and made me feel connected to my younger, more carefree self.

Hobbies provide a form of self care. I love a spa treatment as much as the next girl, but finding a hobby that allows my mind to pause and let go is a game changer. We need that feeling of being refueled mentally and creatively.

Hobbies allow us to share our interests. When you dive into what you love doing, you’ll find others who share that love. Connecting with fellow readers has been amazing and even increased my social calendar. Even the opportunity to share your hobby with your children and have them see that Mommy is doing something for herself is so important.

Whether it’s grabbing a glue gun, baking every Pinterest receipt under the sun or joining a spicy book club like me, I hope you give yourself permission to carve out time to find something you love that’s just for you.

This month’s featured artist, Betsy Simmons Fraser, skillfully blends sophisticated design with handcrafted whimsy offering her customers delightful pieces that inspire cherished memories and a sense of warmth.

How would you describe your work?

A unique, handmade piece can add magic to a room and make your home feel, well…homey! With a passion for graphic design and crafted detail, I create goods, cut and sewn in layered wool felt, that help you make meaningful connections with heart- and hand-crafted gifts and keepsakes. Also, to engage your creative side, I offer Ruby Threadgood patterns and kits that enable the DIY sewist to get “hands on” with home decor.

What influences your pieces and projects?

I want to encourage personal style and design pieces that remind folks of the good life they’re living. Stories are my inspiration, and everything I make has one. I create things that are positive and celebratory, such as a pennant that memorializes a special occasion, a pillow highlighting a favorite season or a banner with a meaningful mantra. Nostalgia also fuels my work. Felt transports me back to my childhood and fond memories of sewing with my mom.

How have you grown, personally, as an artist?

The intersection where crafting meets design has opened up a world of possibilities for me, and I have loved exploring where the combination takes me. My felt work grew from my graphic design. The visual storytelling I enjoy in branding translates to home decor in these goods. This pursuit has also opened up the opportunity to work with different types of clientssuch as individuals seeking to capture a memory, or interior designers looking for a bespoke solution to personalize a room.

How do you carve out time to be creative?

Well, that can be a tough one when also managing ever-evolving client work. It takes intentionality and scheduling creative time on my calendar as I would

a meeting or appointment. I treat that time as non-negotiable. This is easier said than done for me, I must admit! I have also found, if I’m not feeling terribly inspired, it’s better to take a break for a while rather than force it. The creative energy always returns!

Do you have a favorite story behind one of your projects, and if so, why?

I was asked to create a banner for someone to present as a gift to their family in memory of their brother who had passed away. Part of the legacy of this beloved brother, husband and father, was his tradition of preparing an oyster roast for the entire family on the day after Christmas, every year. The banner read, “The Annual John S. Russell Boxing Day Oyster Roast,” and it hangs proudly above their mantle throughout every Christmas season. Creating a keepsake to celebrate the shared and cherished memories of this family was such an honor and so gratifying.

What are you working on that excites you right now?

As a graphic designer, package design is an area that I get most jazzed about. Designing an object in 3-D is something I am starting to explore in felt as well. Ornament design is an exciting new challenge, and I’d like to offer these trinkets as crafting kits packaged in novel ways to add to their giftability.

What is one piece of advice you’d like to share with fellow artists, especially those at the start of their careers?

Throw perfectionism out the window! It just drags you down and leads to procrastination and avoidance. The more action you take, the quicker you learn about yourself and grow in your work. Explore, experiment, get curious, ask yourself, “I wonder if I can do that” and then try it! Who knows? You may discover paths that lead you to new areas of unexpected joy.

Narrowing down those options is one step in the design process where we spend the most time to find the right piece to fit into our design. Our goal is to create an open layout to make the space feel larger, making sure to utilize every square inch. Typically, we custom build vanity cabinets to ensure our clients get the dream bathroom they were envisioning down to the smallest detail. SMALL STRATEGIES HOLD BIG PROMISE

One New Year’s Day, while still living in Connecticut, I experienced a pre-dawn Eureka! moment. I was walking my first mini poodle, Miss Noelle, down the hill, up the crest toward the village green, past the church, the library, the corner store and up the road near the volunteer firehouse...

That’s when I did an about face, retraced my steps and walked into the corner store to extend a warm “Happy New Year!” to the few residents already sharing a hot morning coffee.

That first day of a brand new year course correction got me thinking about those priceless and fleeting “small moments” that matter every day of the year.

Four Small Strategies With Big Promise

Unlike small thinking with its self-limiting resignation, thinking small is about the graceful embrace of what is present. It’s a form of attention that reminds us to:

Do The Next Right Thing

Your plate is full. There are too many demands on your precious time. You can put a halt to that tailspin by reminding yourself that you can’t do everything at once, but you will get things done. Doing so is a strength, not a weakness, girlfriend! Then, take a deep breath and ask yourself “What is the right and best thing that I can do in this moment?”

Build A Right Thing String

Henrik Edberg, author of The Positivity Blog, encourages us to focus more on “what matters” than on what needs to be done. Now, that’s something to ponder! He suggests: “Do something that you deep down think is the right thing.” That right thing could be for others, or it could be for you. Edberg adds, “Continue the string during your day as best you can. After you have added a right thing to your string – no matter how small it is – make sure to take a few seconds to pause and to appreciate the good thing you did. For more than 30 years, the Child Care Resource Center (CCRC) in Winston-Salem has worked tirelessly to guide families in finding quality child care that not only provides a safe environment, but also nurtures early development in our most precious resource – our children!

“Child care is hard to find right now – especially in our rural areas,” shares Kathy Kenney, the center’s development director. “We focus on educating parents on what to look for in quality child care, help clarify all the options in our community and guide them in understanding rates and policies.”

CCRC can also provide data relating to child care trends and obtains information on the average cost of child care by type of facility, the average weekly cost of child care by zip code and the number of child care spaces available in a particular zip code – all available to guide parents in making an informed choice that feels right for their situation.

There is no “one size fits all” option when it comes to child care. Whether you’re focused on a licensed child care center, “Family Friend and Neighbor” care (community members who care for children age zero to five in their homes) or a religious sponsored child care center, this is an incredibly important assignment for parents of young children! Have you ever wondered what spooky secrets the historic city of Winston-Salem holds?

Winston-Salem’s history first began in 1766 when Salem was established. The Old Salem area is now one of the oldest settlements in the U.S.

With a rich history that spans three centuries, Old Salem has long been the backdrop of ghostly legends and eerie tales. The meticulously preserved village is rumored to shelter remaining spirits from days gone by. Visitors and employees have reported mysterious footsteps echoing in empty corridors, phantom figures appearing in period attire and inexplicable cold spots that defy logic.

THE TAVERN IN OLD SALEM

It was in the winter of 1831 when an unknown man entered the doors of Salem Tavern in need of a place to sleep for the night. The man was obviously very sick, and the local doctor was called to tend to him.

By morning, his symptoms were worse, and the man slipped into a coma before passing away. No one tending to the man had even learned his name.

They buried him, but kept his belongings at the tavern, hoping that, one day, his family would come to claim them. A few days later, tavern staff began complaining about strange things happening in the tavern’s basement. They reported feeling an icy, unsettling presence, as well as strange noises seemingly without a source.

Soon, after these strange occurrences, the tavern keeper was by himself one evening, when an apparition appeared before his eyes. The spirit was clearly the man they had buried. The ghostly figure told the tavern keeper his name and asked that he write to his family and inform them of what happened to him. The tavern keeper did as he was asked, and within a few weeks, received a reply. The dead man’s family confirmed his identity and requested the keeper to send the man’s belongings back to Texas. Oddly enough, when the tavern keeper fulfilled this request, all paranormal activity at Salem Tavern came to a halt.

SALEM COLLEGE

Established in 1772, Salem College is the oldest female educational establishment in the United States. Any location with such a long and colorful history is bound to have a ghost or two.

In 1907, two girls were electrocuted and died in the Gramley Building on campus grounds. According to reports, their fullbodied apparitions have been seen in the building. Chillingly, if you meet their gaze, they are said to scream!

In the attic of the Gramley dorms, a student is believed to have hung himself. His spirit is said to be the reason for the dragging sounds and scratching coming from the attic late at night.

In Clewell’s dormitory, you may come across the ghost of a young girl who apparently fell to her death down the elevator shaft.

REYNOLDA GARDENS

Could the beautiful grounds at Reynolda have a spooky side? Many visitors think so. The home and surrounding gardens were built in 1917 for tobacco tycoon R.J. Reynolds, his wife, Katharine, and their children. R.J. would unfortunately die of pancreatic cancer the following year, leaving Katharine alone to manage the estate, which she did until her own death in 1924.

While very little paranormal activity is reported inside the home, the same cannot be said for the surrounding grounds and gardens. Most accounts focus on a mysterious “lady in white” who is seen floating along the wooded trails and wetlands. Sometimes she’s seen on horseback, and sometimes she’s not wearing white, but she’s almost always accompanied by an enveloping mist and a deep cold. Could it be that Katharine is still wandering around the grounds at Reynolda watching over her beloved estate? Considering she spent hours each day strolling the grounds, it certainly makes sense.

J. BLUM HOUSE

Multiple employees of the J. Blum House have reported feeling a type of dread while working there, especially on and around the staircase. According to some, the feeling can become so intense, they refuse to go up the stairs at all.

One man was in the house on a sunny afternoon, hanging flags for an upcoming event. He began hearing someone typing on the computer in the office next door. Once he finished with the flags, he walked over to say hello…only, no one was there, and nobody could have come into the office without first walking by him.

The Blum house got its name from John Christian Blum, a printer who lived in the house during the early 1800s. One fateful night, Mr. Blum was running behind schedule. Hurrying to close his printing business down, Mr. Blum failed to blow out a candle before leaving for the evening. Unfortunately, Mr. Blum had a stack of $10,000 dollars placed near the candle. The money burned up, and Mr. Blum suddenly found himself in an incredible amount of debt. The only way to keep afloat was to mortgage both his house and his business to the church. Mr. Blum eventually passed away in 1854.

Fast forward to 1995 when renovations began on the Blum House. It was decided to return Mr. Blum’s printing press to the house as part of a permanent exhibit, and once there, paranormal activity quickly began. Staff began noticing that the doors in the house would mysteriously open and close by themselves. Other times, the doors would be difficult to open as if someone were on the other side attempting to keep them shut.

Over time, employees also began reporting hearing the sounds of a man and a woman conversing softly in the house. But, every time they would go to look around, nobody else could ever be found.

Why not plan a visit to some of these historic locations this fall and see if you too might be in for a paranormal encounter?

BLACKENED MAHI MAHI TACOS WITH MANGO-PINEAPPLE SALSA

This month, I wanted to share a very popular recipe with a different protein than our typical beef, chicken and pork – mahi mahi! I’ve always loved this fish cooked blackened on the blackstone or cast iron and served with a sweet and spicy mango pineapple salsa. It is great on a taco, is healthy and will definitely be a crowd pleaser!

INGREDIENTS:

• Desired amount of mahi (1.5-2 lbs can easily feed four people)

• Blackening seasoning

• Taco shells (flour or corn, I prefer flour for these)

• Olive oil

Mango Pineapple Salsa Ingredients:

• 1 fresh pineapple

• 2 ripe mangos

• 1 red bell pepper

• 1 jalapeno (de-seeded)

• ½ cup cilantro

• Half (or whole) red onion

• Juice of 2 limes

• Salt (to taste)

INSTRUCTIONS:

1. Slice mahi (if whole) into filets or desired size. I usually get the mid section of the fish and cut into smaller tender shapes to cook quickly.

2. Season mahi with blackening seasoning.

3. Let the seasoning sit in for a bit while you prep the salsa.

4. Chop all fruits, veggies and cilantro.

5. Combine in a large bowl, then add salt and lime juice.

6. Stir it up and store in the fridge.

7. Preheat the skillet or griddle to medium-high heat.

8. Add olive oil.

9. Place mahi down skin side up and let cook for 3-4 minutes.

10. (Optional) While the fish is cooking, I like to char the tortillas over the gas stove directly or on the griddle.

11. Flip over and cook for an additional 2-4 minutes. It should be nice and charred from the seasoning and flake off easily with a spoon – internal temp I look for is 137-140°.

12. Take the fish off and slice it up or pull it off with a fork – assemble tacos with the mango pineapple salsa and whatever other taco toppings you like!

13. I like to add some more chopped cilantro, avocado and some cholula hot sauce.

14. Enjoy!

While this isn’t the first time Isabella Migliarese of Theodore B. Interiors has created a bit of design magic for friend and fellow entrepreneur Ava Vann, the stunning new home of Sunless Body Studios in Winston-Salem evokes truly one-of-a-kind feels!

HOW IT BEGAN

Transforming blank spaces into dreamy retreats comes easily for Isabella, who honors her father, Theodore’s inspiration as a contractor with the name of her own full service interior design firm. She might say she has the design eye, but her dad showed her how to hustle and be a business woman!

When we are stuck in traffic, standing in a long line at the grocery store or watching the seconds tick by when our phone call is placed on hold, waiting feels like a huge waste of our time. But, as much as we dislike waiting, we all understand that waiting is just a part of life. And that is by design – God is not in a hurry.

God has woven a time of waiting into nearly every aspect of the natural world. A garden is one example. After you plant seeds in the ground, no matter how excited you are to see the rewards of your work, you won’t be harvesting anything the next day or even in the next few weeks. You wait and wait and wait...and on the surface, it looks like your garden is a failure. Nothing is happening. But, something actually is happening! Below the ground, where you cannot see it, nature is unfolding just the way it is supposed to. The seed coats are splitting open; moisture is causing the seeds to germinate; and they are beginning to grow. And, one day, green shoots pop through the ground, and you realize that the time you spent waiting wasn’t wasted; it was necessary.

That’s how waiting works in our lives, too. Whenever we are waiting, God is working in ways we cannot see.

Waiting is a mystery to us; we wonder, why does God, who loves us dearly – and could instantly answer our every prayer – so often instead make us wait? In this faith-based mini-book, I shared six reasons why God may sometimes make us wait for his answers; but before I delved into those reasons, I felt compelled to first say that though waiting can be frustrating, disappointing and irritating, God is never playing with our lives. Lamentations 3:33 assures us that God “takes no pleasure in…throwing roadblocks in the way” (The Message). In other words, when God makes us wait for his answer, we can be certain that because of his strong love for us, there is a wise purpose for the wait. Our faith challenge is to trust that God is, in fact, delaying in order to ultimately do what’s best for us. That’s the hard part!

Because God’s timing is always perfect, never too early and never too late, he wants us to allow his perfect timing to guide our lives. Yet, when he wisely pushes the pause button to pace us so that things happen for us at the right time, we so often misunderstand, resist and forge ahead. It’s hard for us to accept that anything that slows us down could actually be positioning us to receive a blessing, right on time.

Isaiah 64:4 plainly tells us that God “...works for those who wait for him.” That’s why when waiting is all you can do, it’s the best thing you can do. Waiting on God is never a waste of time. The key message of The Mystery of Waiting is simply this – if we are waiting, God is still working and always for our good.

Data from August 2024 shows it remains the fourth social media platform as far as user counts as well as the same rank for most active users. The other three higher ranking social media platforms are Facebook, WhatsApp and YouTube.

If you aren’t on Instagram, you are missing reaching a huge audience and, like most social media platforms, it is free to sign up. If you are already on it but not utilizing it, then you are missing out on an important piece of marketing.

BE REAL

One great aspect that Instagram has brought to the forefront of marketing is being real. From moms to influencers to business owners, everyone is showing real life in their roles. It is no longer about showing everything as perfect.

Remember, as a business owner, delegation and outsourcing are so important to keep your sanity and get everything done.

CANVA IS YOUR FRIEND

Canva is an amazing marketing tool for not just social media, but overall marketing, as well. You can create so many items on this app, including social media posts. Always keep in mind, though, it’s also important to have real photos and videos of yourself and your business in the mix on your Instagram page.

There is a free version of Canva that allows for a lot of content creation, but the pro level does cost money.

ENJOY IT

This is possibly the most important Instagram tip in this article. One of my old bosses, Merwyn Hayes, always told me he never worked a day in his life since he opened his business, Hayes Group International, because he loved what he did. This should be applied to as many work aspects as possible, including Instagram.

The moment something feels like work, you’ll either dread doing it or constantly put it off. Neither of these options are good! If you get to that point or are already there with Instagram, then it’s time to outsource it.

Think of Instagram as a way to not only market your business, but to express yourself, share your voice and really have fun sharing content you love, as well!

Promoting DEPRESSION & MENTAL HEALTH AWARENESS

This October

October is known as a month filled with activities aimed at preparing for the bustling holiday season. However, with this busy season around the corner, the month is extremely difficult for those suffering from depression or any other mental health illness. According to the Forbes Health article, Depression Statistics in 2024, “about 20.78% of adults in the U.S., or 50 million Americans, live with mental illness, per 2019-2020 data from Mental Health America.” Depression is also known to be a hereditary illness, with “people who have an immediate family member living with depression may have a two to three times greater risk of having depression.” This can all explain why October is a fitting month to be National Depression and Mental Health Screening Awareness Month.

Part of the reasoning behind not only creating a depression awareness month, but a mental health screening month is to bring awareness to the need for accessible and affordable mental health screenings.

What many may not realize is there are numerous causes that come into play with depression. This includes a mix of genetic, environmental, psychological and biological/biochemical components. This month brings awareness that not everyone experiences depression in the same way. What may be depression for one, could be different for another. However, either way, depression can affect anyone at any time.

October 10th is also World Mental Health Day, with many activities geared towards bringing awareness to the rise of depression among teens and children. Both groups are also highly affected, with “1 in 6 U.S. youths aged 6-17 experiencing a mental health disorder each year.” (Source: National Alliance on Mental Illness) While such statistics may sound disheartening, the good news is that early detection can help. By creating awareness this month, everyone can help take the next step and seek out professional help. This October, begin awareness by reading on for the top five common warning signs that you, or someone you know, may be suffering from depression or another mental health condition.

WARNING SIGN #1: A consistent low mood. When someone who is normally easygoing seems melancholy for more than two weeks, contacting a mental health professional needs to happen. According to the website, PsychCentral, “people with depression describe themselves as feeling numb or ‘flatlined.’”

WARNING SIGN #2: Loss of interest in usual activities. When an avid tennis player suddenly does not want anything to do with tennis, this is a red flag. When someone is experiencing depression, this is one of the easiest signs to spot.

WARNING SIGN #3: Recognizable change in weight and appearance. Both quick weight loss, as well as quick weight gain, are signs that someone could be dealing with a new mental health illness,

like depression. Likewise, when someone who is normally exceptionally clean suddenly appears disheveled with poor hygiene habits, this is another noticeable sign.

WARNING SIGN #4: Poor sleeping habits. According to the Forbes Health article, “10 Common Depression Signs,” sleeping disturbances are a clear sign that something is not right. “Some depressed people can barely get out of bed, but sleeping too much is not the only issue of concern.” If someone has any type of sleeping disturbance, “from having difficulty falling asleep, waking up too early in the morning or waking frequently during the night,” these are all signs that depression could be at play.

WARNING SIGN #5: Decreased energy or fatigue. When someone is tired for many days in a row, despite not doing much that day, one should take note. Many people who have suffered from depression describe a “bone tired” feeling, which will not go away, no matter how much rest occurs.

In the end, depression is a highly treatable condition with many different options available, but awareness and early screening is the most crucial first step. Once a mental health professional is sought out, they can help determine the best course of action for every individual. Take the time, not only this month, but every month moving forward, to make sure you and your loved ones are okay mentally.

For many of us, the arrival of “that time of the month” is met with dread. Cramps, bloating, headaches, irritability and sugar cravings are common complaints. But, what if we could flip the script and turn this so-called “curse” into a superpower?

First, let’s clarify some basics. The menstrual cycle isn’t just the days you bleed – it’s the entire span from the first day of one period to the day before the next. A typical cycle lasts between 26 to 33 days. Your period, on the other hand, is just the number of days you bleed within that cycle.

The menstrual cycle is a powerful barometer for your overall health. It provides insights into how your body is handling stress, reveals possible mineral deficiencies and shows how well your diet and lifestyle are working for you. When something is off, your cycle can be one of the first indicators that something needs attention.

THE HORMONAL PLAYERS

During a typical 26-33 day cycle, three main hormones take center stage at different times: estrogen, progesterone and testosterone. Each of these hormones plays a unique role:

• Estrogen: Promotes an hourglass figure, plumps the skin and offers brain protection.

WEEK 2: THE ESTROGEN AND TESTOSTERONE SURGE

In week two, estrogen continues to rise, and testosterone joins the party. As a result, you may notice plumper lips, a brighter mood and an increased libido. These changes are part of nature’s design to make you more attractive and energetic during this fertile phase.

For those looking to conceive, this is the time to try. For those who aren’t, be mindful of protection. Single or taken, this is your time to shine – plan social activities, pursue hobbies or engage in networking. You’ll likely find that others are drawn to your vibrant energy.

WEEK 3: OVULATION AND PROGESTERONE

Ovulation occurs in the middle of your cycle, and though the egg is only viable for about four hours, sperm can live in the body for several days before ovulation. After ovulation, the luteal phase begins, with progesterone taking the lead. This hormone prepares the body for a potential pregnancy by thickening the uterine lining.

This week is ideal for productivity. You might feel more focused and ready to tackle tasks, have important conversations or even ask for that raise at work.

WEEK 4: THE PREMENSTRUAL PHASE

As estrogen and progesterone levels drop towards the end of your cycle, you might feel more irritable and experience stronger cravings. Navigating TOUGH Conversations

The hardest part about tough conversations is, well, they’re tough. Most of us avoid them for various reasons, such as:

• We don’t want to hurt someone’s feelings.

• We fear the conflict that might arise.

• We’re unsure how to approach them effectively.

BUILDING A FOUNDATION OF TRUST

Start by establishing a foundation of trust and care with the other person. When someone trusts you and believes you have their best interests at heart, they’re more likely to receive difficult conversations positively.

THREE STEPS TO NAVIGATE TOUGH CONVERSATIONS

Once you’ve built that foundation, you can use these three steps to navigate tough conversations effectively:

Check Yourself

Before diving in, ask yourself, “Is this a problem or just a preference?” and “How have I contributed to this situation?” If, after reflection, you determine the conversation is necessary, move on to step two.

Execute the Conversation

Choose a private time for the conversation when you’re not angry or overly emotional. Then, follow these 10 tips to ensure the conversation goes as smoothly as possible:

1. Prepare Yourself: Adjust your posture and take deep breaths beforehand to reduce stress.

2. Use “I” Statements: Begin with phrases like “I noticed” or “I felt” to sound less accusatory and start on a positive note.

3. Focus on Behavior, Not the Person: Address specific behaviors rather than labeling the person.

4. Apply the TOUGH Framework: Use it as a guide to structure your conversation.

5. Listen Actively: Make eye contact, use positive non-verbal cues, paraphrase, ask open ended questions and give your full attention.

6. Watch Your Tone and Non-Verbal Cues: Remember, most communication is nonverbal – ensure your tone and body language match your message.

7. Assume Positive Intent: Believe that the other person’s actions or words come from a place of goodwill rather than malice.

8. Consider Their Perspective: Understand there are two sides to every situation. Try to see things from their point of view.

9. Seek Common Ground: Identify and emphasize shared goals or values during the discussion.

10. Use a Feedback Loop: Summarize the conversation at the end to ensure you’re both aligned.

This Is Me

Everything changes over time. Even the nature of our prayers, I’ve noticed. Instead of seeking insight, solace and answers mostly for myself, I find that I am now more inclined to seek healing and peace for others – those I hold dear to my heart and countless unknown others who suffer in this hard world. It’s a shift that’s linked with a sense of personal clarity that catches me by surprise as it arises unbeckoned: Oh hi, I know you. Welcome back!

Sitting in our backyard one late summer evening, blessed by the familiar rustle of leaves and a cool unexpected breeze, that “knowing” paid a visit and I paid attention. Another birthday is around the corner as this year approaches an end, and that timely little visit helped me to focus on what feels right for me, right now:

MORE SKINCARE, LESS MAKEUP

In part, this is a choice based on my current lifestyle. I’m not traveling hither and yon, making presentations and facilitating learning. I’m “traveling” on a long neighborhood walk or out to the garden to pull weeds or to the CVS for a prescription refill. I don’t need the full-face effect! But there’s something else, too, and it’s about acceptance. There was a time when my younger self wouldn’t walk to the mailbox without that self-protective armor in place! No, this me, right now, looks at a face who has lived and has many, many stories to tell. Sure, I’d like to change this or that, but mostly, I accept what I see, a reflection of how I have inevitably aged and evolved. My focus now is to care for this face, to show it a whole lot of love.

MORE QUALITY, LESS MEDIOCRITY

Growing up as I did, I learned to be a scrounger, and a bargain was hard to resist. Even though I know better, I still fall into that trap now and then – the one labeled “more is better.” No, it never really was, and now my focus is on seeking out what I really want while letting go of all of the rest. I am the lighter for it!

MORE “LET IT BE,” LESS “I’LL LOSE IT”

I’ve always been more than a little happy about my almost flat tummy. Not vain, exactly, but proud, I guess. Now I understand that this paunchy thing is here for the long haul. While it will likely improve once I can get back to my regular workouts (I had surgery which put all of that discipline on hold), the ironing board tummy is a thing of the past: temporary, like most things.

MORE “LET IT GO,” LESS “STICK TO IT”

“Planful and disciplined” were often characteristics that made a regular appearance on my annual performance reviews. True, that way of being has served me very well, but it has also made me a prisoner of my own making. It’s time to lighten up. Once again, I can thank my surgery for interrupting my welloiled and scheduled plans for helping me to realize that I won’t lose my mind if the house isn’t vacuumed every other day. Which is directly related to:

MORE LIVE THE MOMENT, LESS WORK THE PLAN

While recuperating from surgery, I was able to spend more time outside, read more books, write more letters and cards, chat more and longer with friends by phone and in real time with neighbors – in other words, to embrace the joyinducing things instead of squeezing them in between the tedious tasks.

AND ALWAYS, MORE – EVEN MORE – GENEROSITY

I believe that I have always been generous in friendship, kindness and thoughtfulness, and have taken deep satisfaction in giving and in gifting. This has always mattered to me as greedy hands and stingy hearts make us smaller as humans. But for me, for now, when it comes to generosity, more is always better.

halloweenbingo: A Spooktacular Event

PRESENTED BY THE JUNIOR LEAGUE OF WINSTON-SALEM

As autumn leaves begin to fall and the crisp air heralds the arrival of Halloween, the Junior League of Winston-Salem (JLWS) is excited to invite the community to a festive and fun-filled Halloween Bingo event. This unique event is designed to bring people together for an evening of entertainment, community spirit and charitable support. It is also the newest fundraiser for the JLWS.

Halloween Bingo will take place on Thursday, October 24th from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. at The Hawthorne Inn. The event promises a bewitching blend of spooky fun and engaging activities, making it an ideal outing for families, friends and Halloween enthusiasts of all ages.

WHAT TO EXPECT

Participants will enjoy a night of Bingo and entertainment. The event will feature:

• Bingo: Jeffrey Griffin, the announcer for Wake Forest University and the Dash, will call five classic rounds of bingo with a variety of prizes from supporters of the league.

• Costume Contest: Come dressed in your best costume for a chance to win special prizes. Categories will include Most Creative, Best Group, Best Couples, Funniest and Best Overall costumes.

• Music & Dancing: DJ Yung Prophet (an up-and-coming local young DJ) will perform.

• Silent Auction: Bid on unique local items.

• Food & Drinks: Catering by Honky Tonk Smokehouse (available for advance ticket buyers before October 18th) and a bar will also be part of the festivities. Drink tickets are available for advance purchase or at the event.

SUPPORTING A WORTHY CAUSE

This Halloween Bingo event is more than just a night of games and festivities. It’s also an opportunity to support the Junior League of Winston-Salem’s longstanding mission since 1923: to advance women’s leadership for meaningful community impact through volunteer action, collaboration and training. The focus of the Junior League’s community projects is educating and mentoring youth from birth to age 18 and women’s health issues.

Proceeds from the event will go towards their signature projects: BookWORM, Strong Women. Strong Families and Kids in the Kitchen. It will also support other community

programs that the JLWS is a part of such as Forsyth Backpack Program at Cook Literacy Model School and Crosby Scholars. These projects are organized by Junior League volunteers, bringing the league’s mission to life by sharing valuable training opportunities with its members. The skills learned in the league equip local leaders to enact change across our community.

Erin Greene, the chair of Halloween Bingo shared, “This is our first year hosting this event, and we are looking forward to making it a Halloween tradition for our community. There’s nothing better than Bingo, barbecue and boos!”

Anna Cobb Creativity Comes Along When You Least Expect It

In her almost 101 years, Anna Cobb, native of Winston-Salem, NC and resident of Brighton Gardens, an assisted living facility in her hometown, has seen many things in life and has many accomplishments; but, in the past two years, Anna has taken up drawing portraits with a gift from above she didn’t know she had.

IN ALL THINGS, HAVE JOY AND GIVE THANKS

In 1923, Anna Cobb came into this world, becoming one of 11 children, six girls and five boys, in her family. Her father was a hard worker with many mouths to feed, and her mother stayed at home, raising the children and tending to the house. Although things were tough, Anna looks back with joy at being brought up in a home full of love.

“My parents met on a train when my mother offered my father a drink of water. I believe it was love at first sight for both of them; they made a beautiful couple and loved each other until death. I am very blessed to have had such a wonderful, loving family; many aunts and uncles were in the area, too, as I grew up. My mother

was all that a mother should be – a great wife, mother and cook, and she made the house a home; she was an inspiration to me. My mother is gone, but she will never be forgotten. I’m the last one left of my family, but I still have memories of my childhood and my family. My Aunt Minnie was a great sister to my dad and, when she got sick and had to have a colostomy, I took care of her for a good while in my home until her passing. It was a blessing to care for such a wonderful woman,” said Anna.

Part of Anna’s memories include her job working as a secretary at The Winston-Salem Journal, then moving with her family to Washington, DC to work in the government as a secretary. Eventually, Anna would move back to Winston-Salem, marry and have her two sons.

“No matter what came my way, I tried to take everything as a gift and make the best of it; I’m a bit mischievous, and I like a little excitement. I have lived my entire life with a sense of humor and joy; I take whatever I have been given and go with a smile on my face. I have two sons who live in Atlanta that I see when they come to visit. I truly love everything I have ever done, and I wouldn’t change anything about my life,” Anna commented.

A NEW CHAPTER BRINGS MANY BLESSINGS

Just two years ago, Anna’s house became a little bit more than she could handle, so she moved into Brighton Gardens and, again, approached this new chapter with the same outlook of being thankful for every blessing and staying active, sharing her smile wherever she goes.

“I have made friends in the past two years and spend time with them doing activities like exercising and trying to make everyone smile a little bit. Sometimes I see people with their smiles turned down, and I just want to make them smile. No matter what age you are, there are blessings and something to smile about every day you are alive. Recently, I have started drawing sketch portraits of people here at Brighton Gardens, and although I don’t know how good they are, they do make people smile, and if I can do that, I’m happy. My drawings also bring me joy; they’re a gift to me from above. I like all the details on faces, like eyes, how the hair is parted, if they wear glasses, etc.; each thing I see makes them special, and I try to share that in each portrait. For however long I am here on this earth, I will continue to be thankful for all my blessings.” Anna stated.

We should all be as blessed as Anna; not necessarily to live to be 101, but to see each day as one to make someone smile, see the best in others and know there’s always something to be grateful for. As Anna said, “When you know where your blessings come from, you can only be thankful every day. Everything that has been in my life is from God, and I am so very thankful for the road He has had me travel. I wouldn’t change a thing.”

BEST WAYS to Help Out Parents of a Newborn Baby

Whether you’re a parent yourself or you know someone who just had a baby, you know the transition of adding a newborn to your family is not always easy. There are so many new things to learn, and what works for one baby doesn’t work for all babies. There are sleepless nights, piles of dirty laundry and missed meals because, let’s face it, taking care of a newborn baby is a lot of work and takes up a lot of time! In my opinion, it’s the best kind of work because part of the job includes baby coos and snuggles galore, but still…it can be exhausting, especially in those first several weeks. It takes a village to make sure all members of the family are taken care of and, speaking from personal experience, I don’t know how my husband and I would’ve survived without our village helping out.

If you know someone who just had a baby, whether they’re a friend, family or even someone you don’t know very well and you’d like to help them out in this season, I got you! Keep reading for the 10 best ways to help parents of a newborn baby.

Provide dinner for them! Give them the option of a home-cooked meal or a DoorDash gift card. They may not be up for company yet, so if that’s the case, don’t take it personally.

Dinners are the go-to meal to offer, but don’t forget about breakfast! Tell them you are grabbing coffee and then ask them what they’d like to eat and drink, and you’ll drop it off for them. They will likely give you endless thanks for the coffee!

If they’re up for it, let them know you’d love to meet their sweet baby! Tell them you’re bringing over some diapers and snacks, then ask them to send you a list of at least three other things they would like for you to pick up for them from the store.

If you’re planning to visit, tell them you would love to do dishes, laundry or any other chores while you’re there. Make sure to ask them what time of day is best to come and how long they would like for you to stay.

Do they have dogs? Volunteer to take their dogs on a walk, so they can focus on taking care of the baby and rest knowing their dogs are getting attention, too! Or, if it makes sense for you to take care of their dog(s) at your house for a couple of nights, that would be a great way to help out, as well.

In those first several weeks, showers for Mom can be few and far between. Offer to come over and hold the baby while she has a chance to shower and grab some food.

Bring over a couple grocery bags full of household items they might forget to add to the grocery list – toilet paper, paper towels, sanitizing wipes, dish soap, laundry detergent, toothpaste, etc.

Do you have a flexible schedule? If you feel close enough in your relationship with the parents, offer to stay over and take the night shift, so they can get a full night of rest!

When you visit, bring enough groceries to stock their fridge so that they are set for a while. Think healthy snacks, frozen meals and drinks!

Offer to babysit their older kids by taking them to the park or out for lunch! This will allow them some time to focus on the smallest of the bunch for a couple of hours, knowing their other(s) are having fun and getting special attention, too.

Remember, it’s not just new parents who need support during those first several weeks – these ideas are great ways to help out anyone who just had a baby whether it’s their first or third or fifth!

BONUS IDEA – bring Mom a care basket! Some ideas for what to include are a new outfit she’ll feel confident in, shower bombs, a new candle, a cozy blanket, a good book, dark chocolate and perhaps a bottle of wine!

A European country ideal for food and culture-obsessed travelers on a budget, Spain’s diverse features and efficient train system make it possible to explore the country and get a feel for each region.

With moderately-priced accommodations in comparison to pricier countries like France and the United Kingdom, Spain’s proximity to the Mediterranean and its vast geography give tourists many activities and sights to choose from. Below are some of Spain’s greatest sights and cities to see.

MADRID (AND SURROUNDING AREA)

As Spain’s capital city, Madrid is a great starting point for those looking to familiarize themselves with the country. Packed with history (and piping hot in the summer), Madrid offers museums, monuments and day trips to famous Segovia and the picturesque town of Toledo. Exploring the capital city in a day might be tough, as it is the second-largest city in the European Union, but it’s speedy metro system makes getting from place to place a bit easier if walking gets tiresome. Amid your sightseeing, don’t forget to stop in for churros con chocolate (churros with chocolate sauce) in a cafe for breakfast or an afternoon treat.

BASQUE COUNTRY

In northern Spain near the border of France, Basque Country consists of beautiful beaches like La Concha for summertime travelers and modern art and architecture throughout bustling cities like Bilbao. As an autonomous community, residents in Basque Country often speak Euskara and enjoy a unique culture unlike other regions throughout Spain. Visitors enjoy pintxos (Basque-style tapas), which often include sheep’s milk, meats and cod, and are accompanied by local white and red wines.

BARCELONA

As Spain’s most visited city, very few Spanish tourists skip the iconic city of Barcelona where stunning architecture by Antoni Gaudi is scattered throughout the busy streets, such as the famous La Sagrada Familia. A tapas-lovers paradise, nightlife is abundant in Barcelona, with day trips to cava country not too far out of reach. Don’t be surprised if you hear more locals speaking Catalan than Spanish, as Catalan is home to the northeastern Spanish region of Catalonia. Be on the lookout for pickpockets and keep your valuables secure, as Barcelona is notorious for petty theft due to its popularity among tourists.

SEVILLE AND SOUTHERN SPAIN

Heading towards the south of Spain, there are many popular cities that you do not want to miss. Seville is the most popular city in the region of Andalusia with gothic and baroque architecture influenced by the Moors. Enjoy a bowl of gazpacho or taste local ham, or catch a flamenco show to get a taste of Andalusian culture.

South of Seville is the Cadiz, the oldest city in Western Europe. Perfect for a day trip from Seville and home to an important port for trade, Cadiz’s pastel architecture lining the sparkling blue sea is worth a visit for those looking for a historical city off the beaten path. Enjoy fresh seafood, soak up some sun or find a stunning view from one of the town’s many watchtowers.

Another noteworthy Andalusian city is Malaga, a port city along the Costa del Sol with great beaches, plenty of sun and known for being the birthplace of Pablo Picasso. Not too far away is El Caminito del Rey (or “The King’s Little Path”), which allows thrill-seekers the opportunity to hike through the scenic El Chorro Gorge. Guided tours are recommended for safety purposes and last approximately two and a half hours with views that are sure to impress and leave a lasting impact.

A Bed & A Book

Local Charity to Host Golf Tournament on October 11th, 2024

For a child, there’s nothing that brings feelings of safety, comfort and security more than being tucked into their own bed at night and having a story read to them. Unfortunately, not all children have a bed and a book as part of their nightly routine. In 2020, the 501 (c)(3), A Bed and A Book, was founded to reach as many children, ages infant to 18, with their own bed and a book. To raise funds and awareness of the need that our local children and their families have, A Bed and A Book is holding a charity golf tournament, The Dreams & Greens Charity Golf Tournament on October 11, 2024 at Tanglewood Park.

WHEN YOU SEE A NEED, YOU MEET IT

Anneliese Wall, founder and president of A Bed and A Book, was working at the Forsyth County courthouse when she saw three children sleeping on the floor on top of a shower curtain using towels as blankets.

“When I saw these three children sleeping in this condition, I reached out to find a resource and none existed to deliver beds to children in need. I raised the money and got friends to help set up the beds. The kids’ faces were full of joy, and this was what sparked the charity, confirming my mission. With little more than a hope and a dream of helping children and families, we formed the 501 (c) (3) and have now donated more than 600 beds,” said Anneliese.

The idea is simple, but it still requires funds to meet the need.

“We deliver free, brand new, beautiful twin-sized beds which can be stand alone or made into a bunk bed. Each bed comes with a new mattress, new bedding, chosen for each child according to their interest, along with books, through donations from Bookmarks.

Employees from Bookmarks hand select each book. The books are age appropriate and chosen with characters to appeal to the children who will receive them. We also partner with Advocate Atrium, and they refer families to us who are expecting newborns and do not have a safe sleeping space. Our volunteers then deliver a brand new portable crib. Since our collaboration to assist parents of newborns, infant mortality rates have decreased,” Anneliese commented.

HITTING THE GREENS TO HELP CHANGE LIVES

Bed and books aren’t free, so Anneliese and her volunteers decided to host a golf tournament with funds going toward the A Bed and a Book charity.

“Currently, our group is housed in a warehouse in downtown Winston-Salem with no power or bathroom facilities, and the building is for sale. We hope that with some of the funds from the golf tournament, we can find and secure a new location to work from, along with providing beds and books for more children in our community. The tournament, The Dreams & Greens Charity Golf Tournament, will be held on October 11, 2024 at the Tanglewood Championship course. We hope to have a good turnout and that this will be an annual event,” Anneliese stated.

STEPHANIE BOOE

Stephanie Booe is an author, content creator, blogger and speaker. She is celebrating her four-year anniversary of her book getting published and the recent launch of her new and upcoming blog! She has a degree in high school education with a concentration of English from UNC Greensboro. Her goal for a long time was to be a high school English teacher, but in her last semester of college, she realized this career path wasn’t going to be suitable for the life she envisioned for herself. After graduation, she became a preschool teacher and thoroughly loved working with two-year-olds until the world stopped in 2020. Like so many others, Stephanie found her true passion and calling during the pandemic when she was forced to slow down. She and her husband, Alex, had struggled with infertility when they were trying to build their family and, through her online platform on social media, Stephanie began to become a voice and advocate for the infertility community. She became a mom in 2020 and, slowly but surely, her career path skyrocketed as she launched her personal blog, published her first book (You Were Worth the Wait) and began to pursue speaking events. She is thriving as a content creator, writer, mother and wife. Her work is her ministry, and everything she does is done through the lens of positivity, fun and encouraging you to shine your light through your God-given talents!

Kristen Clark is a board certified physician assistant in a well-established orthopedic practice here in Winston-Salem. “When I became a PA, I knew I would have a lifelong meaningful career helping others, and I have loved serving patients in the Triad. When I chose orthopedics, I knew it would allow me to use my hands to practice medicine on a daily basis. In the same light, I was drawn to aesthetics as another landscape to use my hands to help patients in a new way – one that comes alongside busy women to help them feel like the best versions of themselves. Nicci Staton is the founder and CEO of NDKS Socials. She launched the business in 2023 after 10 years in online social selling. NDKS launched accidentally with a friend asking for her help with the social media launch for a new local Women’s Only Movement, Sugar Mamas. From there, the company naturally was birthed with referrals coming in faster than she could keep up. Nicci’s passion is to help create beautiful things, and that is seen in every aspect of her life from social media and years of online makeup tutorials to her hobby of home decorating and furniture flipping. Nicci’s biggest flex is helping her clients feel confident on camera and, with that, her clients are seeing, on average, 200% growth in their social media presence. Brea Brown focuses her educational and personal energies on community service with emphasis on uplifting youth. A Winston-Salem native and graduate of Winston-Salem Preparatory Academy, she holds a doctorate in occupational therapy from Howard University and a B.S. in exercise physiology from the University of North Carolina at Pembroke. She is a proud member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. As part of her university studies, Brea led a research effort on the social-emotional wellbeing of children with incarcerated parents and studied abroad in Ghana, West Africa. “My time in Ghana was instrumental in shaping some of my values, particularly the West African ideologies of community and servant leadership,” said Brea. “I’m very fond of the Adinkra symbol Sankofa meaning of “go back and get it” as a driver behind my willingness to always be ready to help.” “We are thrilled to have Brea join our team of dedicated and trained Program Facilitators,” said LEAD Founder and Executive Director Joy Nelson Thomas. “Brea’s life and work experiences will resonate so powerfully with the young women we serve as they develop, learn and grow to their full potential.”

Along with the loss of a loved one, going through a divorce ranks as one of the most devastating events in one’s life. From the initial separation, to the actual division of property, to child custody, pick ups and drop offs of the kids at your ex’s, the whole process is awful. With each day, you want to feel like you are progressing, and you wonder, “how long does it take to get over my divorce?” I am so glad you asked!

HAVE FAITH THAT BETTER DAYS ARE AHEAD

With my divorce in the rearview mirror for several years, I remember there being times when I couldn’t imagine ever feeling better, like I was whole again. I couldn’t see the light at the end of the tunnel. When I thought I saw a light, it turned out it was on the front of a train of pain headed right at me. I felt no clear direction in my life; just spinning my wheels. But, looking back, even on those days, I told myself to keep the faith and that I had gotten this far, so today would be manageable.

DON’T BE TOO HARD ON YOURSELF

There will come a day when you start to beat yourself up and say, “why did I stay so long?,” “I made a bad choice in my spouse” and “how could I be so naive to think after marriage, he would change?” In order to fully heal and move on from your divorce, you need to forgive yourself for whatever part you feel you played in the relationship ending. Sometimes we think we see potential in people that really isn’t there, and that’s not a bad thing because we all hope people, through time, will choose to better themselves. So, don’t be so hard on yourself.

Grieving, in any form, can become a way of life. We get so used to wallowing in our loss and our pain that we get caught in a cycle of pain. You can grieve your loss, but you also have to give yourself

permission to enjoy life, to remove negative people from your life, to start over and to break the cycle of suffering. No matter how long you grieve, it’s not going to change the outcome. You have a new chapter in life that you need to write.

You’re at a point in your life that you don’t have to ask anyone’s permission to live the life that you want, and you don’t have to stay anywhere you don’t feel valued, worthy or loved. You only get one chance at this life, so don’t waste more time than you need stuck in the past when there’s so much more ahead of you!
