id you know May is Mental Health Awareness month? I’ve struggled with anxiety since I was a child. I remember being six or seven years old and telling my mom that I was so worried, but I didn’t know what exactly I was worried about. The feeling of being anxious is one I’ve been accustomed to for most of my life. I’m certainly not alone — I know anxiety disorders are among the most common of mental health issues. It makes me feel good to see things like taking anxiety medication and/or going to therapy become situations that people are no longer afraid to talk about. I think we still have a way to go, but we’ve certainly come a long way in opening up conversations about mental health. It takes a lot of courage to act towards working on your mental health. If you have thought about making that appointment or having that conversation with a loved one — this is your sign to do it.
I’m thrilled that we’re featuring Fiddle & Fig on our cover this month! Morgan (one of the owners) and I went to high school together, and I’ve loved watching this dream of hers come to life. She and Jamie are two special, hardworking women! You can read all about their store (and some exciting expansion news!) on page 48.
Girls’ Night Out is BACK! Join us at Jeffrey Adams on Fourth on May 2nd for gift card giveaways, half-price wine and some much-needed quality time with your best girlfriends. Learn more on page 34.
May 14th is Mother’s Day, and I must wish a very Happy Mother’s Day to my sweet momma, Keela! I just love this photo that Jon Eric Johnson snapped of her a couple of summers ago. She’ll be the first to tell you that she does not enjoy having her photo made, and I love this one because it truly shows her personality (she didn’t know her photo was being taken). She is passionate. She is driven. She is truly one-of-a-kind. I couldn’t be prouder of her as I’ve watched her take on the challenge of starting a brand new magazine in the Lake Norman area. One thing we do not have in common is that she’s never met a stranger and is always quick to ask anyone and everyone if they’d like a copy of the magazine(s) or if they know about the magazine(s). Whether she’s at home in Lake Norman or if she’s visiting Winston-Salem — it doesn’t matter. She’ll make sure if you haven’t heard of our magazines, that you’re familiar with them once you get done talking to her. She is the epitome of loving what she does — her passion and excitement are contagious. Happy Mother’s Day, KeeKee! I love you!
As always, thank you for choosing to pick up Forsyth Woman this month! We would be nothing without our amazing readers! I hope you learn something new while reading this issue!

Keeping It Real
WHEN THE "NOBODIES" BECOME THE "SOMEBODIES" EVERYONE ELSE WANTS TO BECOME!
by DR. DEBBIE LANIER
Who makes the cut for your inner circle? Who gets access to the most real version of you? Can you name those few you choose to do life with through every season?
It always intrigues me to consider the ones Jesus chose for His inner circle. Throngs of folks followed Him everywhere His feet trekked. Some of those followers possessed extraordinary financial resources. Others were well-known for impressive accomplishments in their areas of expertise. These individuals could have bankrolled Jesus’ ministry and provided unlimited entry into arenas of power and position. Choosing them would have made perfect sense.
But when it came to selecting those twelve people in whom to make His grandest investments, Jesus didn’t look for talent, means, or accomplishment. (NONE of His carefully chosen disciples carried exceptional ability!) Jesus didn’t concern Himself with where they came from or the severity of any failure littering their past.
Jesus didn’t give a rip about their socio-economic bracket. Surprisingly, He didn’t even prioritize their level of maturity in spiritual matters. NONE of the world’s usual criteria for success fazed Jesus as He selected His tribe.
So what was Jesus’ prerequisite for His pack? What one thing mattered more than anything else? Study it, and you’ll discover that Jesus chose the hungriest hearts. (Yep, that’s it! That’s the truth!)
Jesus knew that when we hunger, we are driven by an eagerness, even a desperation for more of whatever makes us hungry. From this place of craving more of Him, Jesus can take the “nobodies” and make them the “somebodies” everyone wants to become.
I know, I know. Everything around you tells you that to make it in this world, you’ve got to jump through certain prescribed hoops and be this certain kind of person. But hear me!
You are NOT what you have.
You are NOT what you do.
You are NOT what you look like.
YOU ARE who God says you are!
If you will get hungry, even famished for Him instead of fighting to fit in with the world, you’ll soon discover that you are becoming the “somebody” everyone else wants to know and become.
Listen, Friend! The folks you have been following are not showing you the way. They are simply following the people in front of them who don’t know who they are, either.
If you’ll chase hard after the One who knows you better than anyone else does…after the One who leads you to authentic greatness, you’ll find yourself becoming the “somebody” you’ve been looking for. You won’t suffer the pain of regret at the end of this journey. You’ll leave a mark that lasts beyond you! Significance will be your legacy!
Be you. Be His. Be His you! Be the “somebody” into whom He can pour Himself so you can actually live large enough to not only change you, but also change the world around you!

APPROACHING SUMMER WITH CONFIDENCE
by MARTIE EMORY, photos by JEJ PHOTOS
A sure bonus of working with Salem Plastic Surgery & Renewal Med Spa is knowing they are always up-to-date with cutting edge procedures for their clients! These trusted experts — Dr. Scott L. Tucker, Dr. Hampton A. Howell and their amazing team — are known for creating a game plan customized to each individual, and always looking forward to educating themselves and their patients on every new opportunity for improvement! As summer approaches, the team focuses on the latest in laser hair removal, and updates you on Emsculpt NEO, a non-invasive approach to making sure you are summer ready!
CANDELA GENTLE MAX PRO
Aesthetic Nurse Jade Simmons describes the incredible ease and benefits of Candela Gentle Max Pro. “The Gentle Max Pro is the leading system for laser hair removal treatments, with up to 80% permanent hair reduction in patients of all skin types — with the appropriate hair color,” Jade explains. “The treatment does work best on darker hair colors.”
In addition to hair removal, the Gentle Max Pro can treat pigmented areas such as age spots or sun damage, diffuse redness and vascular lesions, such as broken capillaries, and also reduce wrinkles.
“The Candela Gentle Max Pro has two separate laser wavelengths (the Alexandrite-755nm laser and the Nd. Yag-1064 laser), that allow us to provide multiple different treatments for skin types I through VI on the Fitzpatrick skin-type scale,” adds Jade.
When making an appointment for one of the laser hair removal procedures, you’ll first schedule a consultation to assess your area of concern, to
make sure you’re a good candidate, and likely to see results. Your medical history is also reviewed to make sure there are no contraindications to the treatment.
Laser hair removal is typically scheduled every four to eight weeks, based on the area of the body and different hair growth cycles. The laser treats the hair that’s in its growth cycle at the time of treatment. In seven to 21 days post-treatment, the hair will start to fall out, and once this step is complete the area should be hair-free for three to four weeks leading up to the next treatment. With any laser treatment, it’s best to avoid sun exposure for four to six weeks prior to treatment, and avoid sunless tanners or spray tans two to three weeks prior.
EMSCULPT NEO
The Salem Plastic Surgery & Renewal Med Spa team is especially excited to introduce patients to Emsculpt NEO, a breakthrough non-invasive body
shaping process that simultaneously delivers heat and magnetic energy. That combined 30-minute session can result in more fat reduction and more muscle growth. With four, 30-minute treatments scheduled once a week, this is the world’s first and only technology using Radiofrequency and HIFEM+ (high-intensity focused electromagnetic field) to build muscle and eliminate fat non-invasively.
Emsculpt NEO feels much like an intense workout with a warming sensation in the treated area, and patients can lie down and relax during the treatment. Some results may be visible right away, and positive results are usually reported two to four weeks after the last session, and continuing for several weeks following treatment. As you can always expect at Salem Plastic Surgery & Renewal Med Spa, treatments are individually tailored to each patient’s needs, for various body parts. There’s no downtime (always a plus!), and no anesthesia, and Emsculpt NEO is appropriate for the abdomen, buttocks, inner thighs, outer thighs, front thighs, back thighs, biceps, triceps, and calves.
For more information on either service, you can reach Salem Plastic Surgery & Renewal Med Spa at 336-768-8483, or visit salemplasticsurgery. com. The practice is located at 1345A Westgate Center Drive in Winston-Salem, a convenient location even for lunchtime appointments! Follow them on Instagram @salemplasticsurg and @ renewalmedspanc.

Veronica Vale | Stylized Landscape Artist
This month’s featured artist, Veronica Vale, follows adventure wherever it calls her name, taking in breathtaking scenes that she recreates into vibrant, expressive paintings showcasing nature’s beautiful blend of both rugged and delicate details.
How would you describe your work?
I see my paintings as landscapes that present nature through the eyes of an idealist - one who finds serenity and bliss in the subtle refinement and cultivation of nature’s rugged beauty. Using my own photos and memories as reference, I translate the powerful beauty of nature into modern, stylized acrylic paintings. I combine acrylic paint, metallic paint, and pen and ink, to provide a balance of loose, painterly expression with elements of graphic design. Each painting then becomes a window into my mind, a postcard from an adventure gone by, and a happy, restful space for a restless mind.
What influences your art?
All of my landscape paintings are inspired by my own experiences in nature. I try to capture the entire experience, feeling, and mood of a landscape rather than its realistic depiction. Have you ever taken a picture of a particularly incredible sunset and found that the photo didn’t quite capture just how magnificent it felt in person? In my paintings, I aim to imbue energy back into those landscapes through more vibrant colors, visceral textures, and satisfyingly clean linear elements to align more with the true memory of that place.
How have you evolved, personally, as an artist?
I used to think that happy art would never be taken seriously. “Art must comfort the disturbed and disturb the comforted,” and all of the other vexing quotes thrown out in my art seminars would reverberate through my mind and startle me into creating work that matched these sentiments. I’ve discovered that art isn’t about expressing any one particular feeling or mood - it’s about authenticity. I’ve learned to stop creating the kind of work that I think I “should“ create, and instead, focus my energy on creating work that feels most authentic to me.
You participate in several in-person markets and fairs - what do you like most about these events?
I started my art business right in the heart of the pandemic. My first year and a half of business, I connected with others through art exclusively online. As the world emerged from our collective hibernation, I was introduced to the world of art fairs. I had been so accustomed to the solitude, that they were a bit of a shock to my system - but in the best way imaginable. I get to engage with people and talk about art and what it means to them. I get to witness instinctive reactions to my work in person and connect with people who are moved by what I create.
How do you carve out time to be creative?
A lot of times, people think that inspiration strikes like lightning, but I’ve found that inspiration follows action, not the other way around. I actually schedule set times to paint in my routine. I work all morning at my computer on the business side of things from marketing and communication to shipping. After lunch I paint until it’s time to take my dog for his evening walk (dogs’ internal clocks are the best alarm clocks anyways). This routine ensures that I have time for all aspects of my business, and it prevents me from waiting for inspiration to strike. Instead, I start working knowing that inspiration will follow and creativity will flow.
What are you working on that excites you right now?
I’m working on a new series of original landscape paintings that pay homage to the beauty and majesty of the Blue Ridge mountains. This new series feels closer to home than ever before, in subject matter, style, and tone. Each new series feels more and more like the work I was meant to create, and I find that to be the most exciting discovery as an artist.
I recently launched the Vale Brand Line with art products like apparel, tote bags, yoga mats, home decor, drinkware, stickers and much more. It’s always been important to me that my work be accessible. I want to make art for everyone, not just those who can afford the higher price tag of original paintings. I could not be more excited to share my work with anyone who may treasure it.
What is one piece of advice you’d like to share with fellow artists?
Release yourself from anybody else’s expectations and make the art that you feel called to make. Whatever kind of work that you feel compelled to create, I promise you, you will find your audience. Once you find that community of people who truly appreciate your most authentic expression, you’ll realize that it is so much more valuable than trying to please everyone with your work. Make the art you love - after all, you’re the only one who can express your unique voice as authentically as you can.
If you are interested in learning more about this month’s artist, Veronica Vale, you can find her work online at www.veronicavale.com as well as follow her on Instagram @veronica.vale.art. For local events you can refer to her website for dates and locations.

Purpose Push:
Birthing Healthy Businesses
If you’ve started your business, congratulations! You are the mother of a bouncing baby business, Happy Mother’s Day! More importantly, Happy Mother’s Day to those who have birthed real babies, and all praises go to you. No matter how old our businesses are, they will always be our babies and we do our best to learn and absorb what we need to help them thrive in success. It’s not an easy task but experiencing resistance, obstacles and even pain is not a sign we’re off track. Firstly, remember God created our desires and He is watching over us and coursecorrecting to make sure we end up in the place He has prepared for us. Let out that sigh of relief and keep Hebrews 6:10 in your heart because He sees you and your hard work. So let’s focus on birthing and raising healthy businesses.
CHECK IN WITH GOD
Jesus promised there will be struggle in this life but He encourages you to find peace in Him because He has overcome the world (John 16:33). Your efforts towards your business should be peaceful overall and it shouldn’t feel like you’re fitting a square peg into a round hole. Before we go further, make sure you check in and ask yourself, “Did I ask God about this step in my business?” And don’t be afraid or reluctant if He asks you to pivot. It may feel like you’ve lost time you’ll never get back but God is supernatural and above our Earthly concept of time and He will restore all the time you think you lost! Trying to reach success in your own power will result in delays and frustration and, I promise, you’ll still end up doing it God’s way so let’s just surrender sooner than later. I’m talking to myself on that one, too.
KNOW YOUR “WHY”
Starting a business because it’s trendy or because you need the money is not a strong enough foundation to thrive. Dig deep. Why do you want a successful business? You can find more money anywhere so why did you choose this route? It’s hard! Understanding your “why” is the most important thing for your mental state. There have been times I’ve questioned myself and felt silly for spending money on courses, websites and email service providers while my peers were traveling the world. But God reminded me of my why: I want to build generational wealth and attain things that can never be taken away from me. My ancestors endured so much and had nearly everything

taken from them but they persevered and I will make them proud. I want to own my business, property, investments and all other assets and never be a slave to worldly ideologies. And when I’m financially ready, I’ll be regularly joining my peers on vacations because I want to travel, too! Fix your mindset and make your “why” this strong.
KEEP LEARNING
The biggest mistake you can make at any point in your business journey is thinking you’re done learning. We can immediately think of a big business that did not pivot with the changing times and are now just a memory. That won’t be you if you keep your mind open to learning
new things. Take time out of your busy schedule to implement new skills and information. Your future self will thank you because you’re already thinking about what she may need and doing something now. So take that class, learn from others older and younger, and commit to being a student at life and you will never feel like you’re getting left behind.
As I’ve heard, giving birth is one of the most painful things a woman can experience. I can’t compare birthing humans and birthing businesses but I do know both take an incredible amount of strength and God knew we could do it. So I have faith in you and I’m excited to see your healthy business grow.

Worry
by JEAN MARIE JOHNSON
The older I get, the more I like myself. It’s true because when I look at myself as an observer, I can appreciate what makes me uniquely me. But still, there are some things I’d rather not see or acknowledge. Case in point: the worry habit. I know better, but every now and then I find myself traversing that well-worn, ill-begotten path.
Well, I have plenty of company as “uncontrollable worrying” afflicts one in ten adults! Dr. Graham C.L. Davey explains the phenomenon. “Chronic worrying is often driven by a need to worry to make sure things will all be okay.” That’s quite the irony, no? When I find myself focusing on the negative, ruminating, or catastrophizing, I reach for qualities I appreciate about myself: my resilience and my ability to keep going, come what may. Then I go back to these trusted tools from my worry banishment toolkit:
DISTINGUISH BETWEEN PRODUCTIVE AND UNPRODUCTIVE WORRIES
You can act on a productive worry. You can problem-solve and take steps to improve the situation that’s causing the worry. An unproductive worry is just the opposite. It is something that is completely out of your control.
• When you identify a productive worry, move into problem-solving mode. Consider steps you can take to improve the situation. A friend recently shaved $200 off her monthly household budget just by getting practical and creative. Another climbed out of a self-described “rut” by identifying ten new experiences she could try over the course of the following ten months.
• When you identify an unproductive worry, call it out for what it is and move on to the next tool in your kit.
MAKE PEACE WITH UNCERTAINTY
Many of us dislike uncertainty as much as we do change. Why? Because of the persistent, frustrating and often scary element of being out of control. It can be helpful to remind yourself that uncertainty is a fact of life that resides alongside your best plans and most heartfelt dreams. That is true for everyone. When uncertainty rattles your cage, remember how you endured and often thrived in the past when you didn’t know what would happen. Draw strength and courage from those examples.
MANAGE YOUR WORRIES
With worry as a persistent companion, it’s hard to get through the day calmly and productively. So, get a grip on worry. Assign it a specific time slot to grapple with what’s troubling you and parse out the productive from the unproductive worries. Then, 24/7, jot down your worries as they arise, knowing that you can retrieve them during your specified worry time. When time’s up, shift back to a calmer you by doing something nice for yourself: a cup of tea, a short walk, a warm text to a friend.
DITCH THE “WHAT IFS”
“What If Road” is a certain path to panic-filled misery. Maybe you’re worried about an upcoming relocation, or an exam, or the possibility that your mother-in-law may have to move in with you. Whatever it is, practice changing your “What if” into a “How can I?” best prepare myself, or be ready for this? That’s a practical shift that gives you some control. And don’t forget that the majority of our worrisome “What ifs” never come to pass.
STAY IN THE PRESENT
The crazy thing about worry is that it robs you of the present. So how can you disengage with your worries and enjoy what you have in the here and now? Try these simple approaches:
• Experience the life around you by getting outside and taking a brief walk, refilling the bird feeder, or pulling a few weeds.
• Repeat an empowering mantra such as, “I’ve got this,” “All is well,” “I am not alone,” “This will pass.”
• Count your blessings. When you focus on all that you have, you create a shift in your brain that makes you more peaceful and more hopeful. With worry at bay, you can focus on the present in positive ways.

for Those with Less than a Green Thumb!
by KAREN COOPER
How do I take care of my plants? Am I giving them too much water, not enough water, too much light, not enough light? Not enough love and attention? There are some who seem to be able to grow just about anything…no matter the circumstances…and then there are people like me. If you don’t have the greenest thumb, here are some hearty plants that refuse to die and will make you feel like you’re the most accomplished gardener around.
ANTHURIUMS
The bright red, heart-shaped blooms on anthuriums may last forever with very little effort required. They do best in bright, indirect light and don’t like continually moist soil. Only water these plants when the soil looks dry, which ends up being approximately once a week or so.
BAMBOO
There is nothing much easier to grow than bamboo! Put it in some water and replace the water every once in a while. Bamboo also requires very little light, making it a perfect indoor houseplant or office plant.
MONEY TREE
Sounds like a winner! You’ll like it even more when you see how easy it is to maintain. Money trees do best in full and partial sunlight and should stay inside. Only water if the soil looks dry, around once a week (if that).
SNAKE PLANT
It’s fantastic for beginners, but many seasoned plant owners also enjoy the snake plant for its dramatic, upright foliage. This hardy plant can survive in almost any environment, but it really thrives when placed in bright light.
PEACE LILY
These plants are almost impossible to kill, and they add lush, vibrant greenery to the home. You will know when to water them because the leaves will begin to droop.
SUCCULENTS
These plants are wildly popular these days for their beauty, along with their drought-resistant qualities. Succulents are great plants for anyone. They require very little watering, as they don’t like continually moist soil. Keep your succulents in bright, indirect light, and water whenever the soil looks completely dry.
HOYA
Hoya plants are a great choice for the busy plantlover. They are fast growing, minimal-care, trailing plants that are available in a variety of leaf colors, sizes, and textures. They require little watering and only partial sun. This plant’s vining nature makes it a beautiful and unique “spiller” plant when creating container gardens. The foliage of this plant can be both smooth and shiny, which is why they are commonly known as wax plants. They also work well in hanging planters and can even be trained to grow on a trellis.
ZZ PLANT
The ZZ plant is the perfect indoor plant for the neglectful plant owner. It can tolerate just about any environment, from low light to low humidity. You can even forget to water it for a couple weeks. The ZZ plant, unlike many others, doesn’t even need natural light to survive. The fluorescent lights often found in office buildings provide all the light the ZZ needs to thrive.
POTHOS
These trailing, foliage houseplants do well in a variety of environments. They can thrive in low light conditions and are a popular choice for offices, bathrooms and kitchens. Pothos is also known as Devil’s Ivy and can be easily propagated from cuttings. One word of caution on this easy to maintain houseplant… it is considered toxic to cats, dogs, and children.
ALOE VERA
Aloe vera is one of the most widely used medicinal plants in the world. As luck would have it, it’s also a fairly easy plant to grow. Aloe is part of the succulent family and prefers bright, indirect light along with dry conditions. It is important to remember that these multi purpose houseplants cannot handle sustained direct light; it will cause them to dry out too much and begin to yellow.

TURNING A Setback INTO A Comeback
by LESLIE SPEAS
Have you ever encountered a setback where something unexpected messed up your plans and resulted in feelings of discouragement and disappointment?
Maybe your setback involved a failed relationship, a health issue, a financial problem, or a curveball in your career or education. Setbacks cause delays and
inconvenience – and may cause you to question the direction that you are headed with your life. This doesn’t mean that setbacks are failures. Setbacks don’t have to define your future. And I know that some of my setbacks actually resulted in something even better that God had for me.
THE BIBLE IS FULL OF STORIES WHERE MEN AND WOMEN EXPERIENCED SERIOUS SETBACKS. HERE ARE A FEW:
• Joseph’s brothers sold him into slavery. He ended up in prison but eventually became the Pharaoh’s right-hand man over all of Egypt.
• Esther was sentenced to marry a king who had his previous wife killed. Just weeks after getting married, her new husband unwittingly signs a decree that all of Ether’s people should be eliminated. Esther went before the king and made an appeal for her people and was ultimately successful.
Many great people faced setbacks in their lives. Michael Jordan was cut from his high school basketball team. Thomas Edison failed multiple times in inventing the light bulb. Walt Disney was fired from a job for not being creative enough. These individuals obviously got back up and kept going, achieving great success, and inspiring us all.
• Paul was put in prison and experienced many unexpected delays in his efforts to spread the gospel. In Philippians 4:1112. he wrote, “For I have learned in whatever situation I am to be content. I know how to be brought low, and I know how to abound. In any and every circumstance, I have learned the secret of facing plenty and hunger, abundance, and need.”
What did these individuals have in common? They trusted in God and sought His help in difficult times. When things didn’t go as desired, they maintained a positive attitude because they knew God would make all things work out according to His purpose. If you are feeling discouraged over an apparent setback, remember these individuals.
1. ASSESS YOUR SITUATION.
Think about what you can learn from the situation. How did you get here? What could you have done differently? What are your options now?
2. TAKE A BREAK.
You may need to rest and recuperate after the setback. This isn’t the same thing as giving up. Fatigue may have even contributed to the setback so take some time to rest.
3. ASK FOR HELP.
First, ask God for His guidance and assistance. You may also want to ask someone else you trust for advice on your next steps.
4. TRUST GOD.
Trust that He will carry you through the setback or trial. Refamiliarize yourself with how great He is. This can help calm you down and put things into perspective.
5. DON’T GIVE UP.
Many people give up when things don’t go their way. If you feel that you should proceed with your original plans, then do so. Or if you think you may need to reassess your path and change course, do that. But don’t throw in the towel!
In conclusion, remember – it’s just a setback. It’s not your future. God may be orchestrating something unexpectedly good in your life, despite the reversal of your plans. Turn your setback into a comeback!

Coffee Naps:
A Quick Boost for Your Day
If you’re someone who struggles with feeling tired and sluggish during the day, you might be interested in learning about coffee naps. This unique approach to combating mid-day drowsiness involves taking a quick nap immediately after drinking a cup of coffee. But does it really work? Let’s explore the science behind coffee naps and how they might benefit you.
WHAT IS A COFFEE NAP?
A coffee nap, also known as a caffeine nap, is a method of taking a quick nap (typically around 20 minutes) immediately after consuming a cup of coffee. The idea is that the caffeine in the coffee will take about 20-30 minutes to fully enter your bloodstream and begin to have its stimulating effects. By taking a nap during this time, you can wake up feeling more alert and energized than you would have otherwise.
THE SCIENCE OF COFFEE NAPS
To understand why coffee naps might work, it’s important to understand how caffeine affects the body. Caffeine is a stimulant that works by blocking the neurotransmitter adenosine, which is responsible for promoting sleep and suppressing arousal. By blocking adenosine, caffeine increases the levels of other neurotransmitters like dopamine and norepinephrine, which are associated with increased alertness and energy.
However, it takes time for caffeine to take effect. After drinking a cup of coffee, it typically takes about 20-30 minutes for the caffeine to reach peak levels in the bloodstream. During this time, taking a nap can be especially beneficial. When you’re asleep, your body naturally reduces the amount of adenosine in your system, making it easier for the caffeine to take effect once you wake up. The result? A quick boost of energy that can help you power through the rest of your day.
BENEFITS OF COFFEE NAPS
So, what are some of the benefits of taking a coffee nap? Here are a few:
1. Increased alertness and productivity: By combining the stimulating effects of caffeine with the restorative effects of a nap, you can wake up feeling more alert, focused, and productive than you would have otherwise.
2. Improved mood: Feeling tired and sluggish can put a damper on your mood, but a coffee nap can help you feel more positive and upbeat.
3. Enhanced memory and cognitive function: Studies have shown that caffeine can improve memory and cognitive function, which can be especially beneficial for tasks that require concentration and attention to detail.
4. Reduced risk of accidents: Drowsiness and fatigue are major contributors to accidents on the road and in the workplace. By taking a coffee nap, you can reduce your risk of making mistakes due to fatigue.
TIPS FOR TAKING A COFFEE NAP
If you’re interested in trying out a coffee nap for yourself, here are a few tips to help you get started:
1. Time it right: Remember that it takes about 20-30 minutes for caffeine to take effect, so make sure to time your nap accordingly. If you nap for too long, you might wake up feeling groggy instead of energized.
2. Choose the right coffee: While any type of coffee can technically work for a coffee nap, you might want to choose a type that’s high in caffeine and low in sugar. This will help you get the most stimulating effects from the caffeine without the added crash that can come from sugar.
3. Find a quiet place to nap: To get the most benefit from your coffee nap, it’s important to find a quiet, dark place where you can sleep uninterrupted. If you’re at work, consider using a break room or finding a quiet corner where you won’t be disturbed.
4. Set an alarm: To make sure that you wake up at the end of 20 minutes.

JUNIOR LEAGUE OF WINSTON-SALEM
Celebrating 100 Years of Community Spirit
by MARTIE EMORY, photos by 29TH AND 11TH PHOTOGRAPHY
In March of 1923, Katharine Reynolds Johnston gathered with a group of 40 ladies on the lake porch of Reynolda House and pondered how they could become more involved in the community. That simple afternoon tea launched a strong mission, and the Junior League of Winston-Salem — the first chapter in North Carolina — was born.
With their sights and energy set on continuing to advance women’s leadership through volunteer action, collaboration, and training, the Winston-Salem Junior League has nearly 1,000 members now, including 250 active members currently. And this year the Junior League is proudly celebrating its 100th anniversary!
Current President Carrie Vickery shared plans for the three-fold Centennial celebration. The first event — the Junior League Gala — was held March 25 at Forsyth Country Club. Members celebrated with dinner and dancing, and approximately 55 past presidents of the group were in attendance for the momentous Past Presidents’ Champagne Toast. (And the oldest living past president also joined the festivities!)
The second part of the celebration is an all-important Community Gift. “We have a history of making gifts on each anniversary,” says Carrie. “This year’s anniversary gift is a new endowment to the Winston-Salem Foundation called the Junior League of Winston-Salem Literacy & Equity Fund.”
The fund’s specific purpose is to provide funding, in the form of “mini grants” for individual schools or PTAs within the Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Schools system. “Our goal is $100,000, but teachers can begin applying now,” explains Carrie, noting the application process will be simple, and can be for small amounts like $200-$250 for a teacher to purchase needed supplies. “It’s a very grassroots effort!”
The third piece of the celebration includes two exhibitions to celebrate the Junior League’s work through the years. From now until the end of the
year, an exhibit of the group’s history will be on display on the Lake Porch at Reynolda House, marking the venue where those early civic-minded women set the wheels in motion. The exhibit is open to the public, and will educate museum-goers on the Junior League of Winston-Salem’s place in the history of the Reynolda Estate. A second exhibit this fall on the second floor of the Central Library (where the Junior League archives are held) will spotlight the group’s powerful community work.
Each individual Junior League adopts its own focus, and the local group’s focus is women’s health and children’s literacy — two vital elements in our community! Now in her 10th year of membership, Carrie says she was drawn to the organization for the chance to volunteer in a purposeful fashion. She explains that each member receives a “placement” to earn volunteer hours — typically with a local non-profit, or one of the Junior League signature placements such as “Strong Women, Strong Families.” As part of that initiative, and in keeping with the health and literacy focus, the League holds health fairs at local Title 1 schools a few times a year, offering medical providers onsite and a healthy meal for parents and students.
While in 1923 the Junior League may have more reflected “ladies who lunch,” today’s membership is comprised of a large number of working women — from all professions around the community — and all making a difference! If you are interested in becoming a member of the Junior League of Winston-Salem, visit JLWS.org. The membership year runs from June-to-June, and new members begin as provisionals, then become active members, and after 10-plus years, become sustainers — for life! Even if you only plan to reside in Winston-Salem for a short time, members can transfer to any chapter in the United States or around the world, at any time.
The Junior League of Winston-Salem is located at 131 Liberty View Lane, Suite 201, Winston-Salem, 336-722-9681. Visit their website at JLWS.org and follow them on Instagram @juniorleaguews. You can reach Carrie Vickery at president@ jlws.org for more information on membership and community projects.

Is It Time for Your Business to Break Up With Networking?
This column is meant to serve as a resource for readers who seek inspiration and knowledge for building their own small business brands. Through actionable advice, find the encouragement to help you keep living your life with hustle and heart.
If I could go back in time to when I first started my business I would tell myself that I was wasting time at all the networking events I kept adding to my carefully considered calendar. While each event was a lovely way to get to know others in my industry and community, merely attending wasn’t benefiting me the way it could have been.
Business owners are constantly fed the narrative that networking is one of our greatest resources. I’m not saying networking isn’t all it’s cracked up to be, but maybe we’re looking at it wrong. The formal conversation, the pressure to memorize your resume or elevator pitch, the awkward “What now?” after meeting someone you want to connect with…there’s a better way.
The truth is, it’s time to break up with “networking” and embrace creating connections and building real relationships to grow your business.
RELEASE THE PRESSURE OF OUTCOME BASED CONNECTIONS.
Like who you like. You have to let go of the idea “How is this connection going to benefit my business or my bottom line?” and shift into finding your people. Maybe that new connection will lead to a new sales opportunity, maybe it won’t. Maybe that new connection ends up being the difference between feeling lonely in your business and finding a sounding board and confidant you’ve craved? A new friendship, cheerleader or lifelong colleague? It may sound cheesy, but when you release the need to know the outcome of new connections, and just focus on truly feeling people out and finding the ones you mesh with, that’s when a powerful connection happens.
DECIDE WHAT YOU’RE REALLY LOOKING FOR.
You never know who’s in the room. This isn’t just at a specific event either but all around you - the waiting room at the pediatrician’s office, your favorite local coffee shop, your friend’s birthday dinner. Understand that sometimes who or what you’re looking for in your business is just one person away from finding it. When you know exactly what you need most, you become more focused and able to spot it when it comes your way! Don’t be afraid to ask for what you want when the opportunity presents itself, whether that means requesting the favor of an introduction to someone, asking for a referral for service you’re needing or inviting someone for a coffee date simply because you’re craving a fellow business owner-mom in your corner.
KNOW WHAT YOU BRING TO THE TABLE.
One of the biggest problems with the mindset around traditional networking is it tends to be a very “What’s in it for me?” point of view. We all know that’s not how real relationships - healthy ones - operate. Instead, the real power of networking is unlocked when you think about what you have to offer others to help move them forward or improve their situation, even when it’s something small you can offer. If you’re someone who struggles with asking for things, knowing what you can offer someone else may even give you more comfort around building new relationships. Think about your strengths, passions and connections! Maybe you invite them to a free yoga class at your studio, offer a park playdate with each other’s kids, or suggest sending over their resume so you can help give feedback?
CREATE YOUR INNER CIRCLE.
Regardless of whether you consider yourself an introvert or extrovert, we aren’t meant to do business by ourselves - or life for that matter. Building a successful business takes support and building relationships is the best way to grow an authentic community around you. Invest time in people who feel good to be around, allow yourself to show up for them and yourself, and be specific when strategizing ways to support one another. Trading networking for community building will always give you the biggest ROI in your business!
HUSTLE & HEART CHALLENGE
This month, challenge yourself to think about the last time you attended a “networking” event or opportunity. What kind of pressure did you feel? How would you change that next time? Think about the last few connections you’ve made and allow yourself to reach out to the ones that felt most promising and invite them to connect, either over a virtual coffee date or in-person meeting. You never know where that relationship might lead!

Trending Green
I have been watching the home décor trends and would love to share what I have learned. Americans are looking for their homes to be restful and soothing, yet at the same time stylish. More and more people are interested in creating a refuge that is peaceful, inviting, and easy to maintain. They want to relax and unwind at the end of the day. Comfort and functionality are equally important. It does not matter if it is a new home or a remodeled home, we are hearing these same comments.
Colors are across the spectrum this year with a forecast of colors such as green to blue shades along with neutrals. Sherwin Williams has a new color of the year that exudes warmth: Redend Point SW9081. Benjamin Moore’s color of the year is a vivacious shade of coral tinged with pink, Raspberry Blush: 2008-30. These enliven the senses with an electric optimism. Accents are important to use with any style décor. Gilded gold light fixtures and warm golds for plumbing fixtures are number one on the list of finishes. Other finishes, depending on the style of home chosen, are iron, black mixed with gold, and antique silver. Customers want style that is casual elegance, glamorous, and classic. We see a huge trend with traditional coming back, clean lines with beautiful symmetry. Some clients are asking for traditional like they grew up with, therefore, antiques have become quite popular again. Antique prints, local artists’ oil paintings, bench-made furniture of all tones of wood, and hand-painted pieces are some of our favorites.
We are receiving requests for wallpaper and wild patterns which we love. I never thought I would see the comeback of wallpaper, but grass cloth and bold patterns are among the most popular. The prediction by the experts is that murals, whether wallpaper or hand painted, are making a strong comeback. I saw some mural scenes at the Atlanta market of modern and historical French reproductions. Call us for an appointment to schedule your next remodel, new home, or updates. We look forward to helping you.

The second annual Women on the Move Conference [WOMC] delivered even more joy, love, inspiration, and SHINE than anticipated! Approximately 275 empowered women coming together at one venue is always a reason to celebrate, and this amazing spring Monday — March 20, 2023 — was one for the ages!
Welcoming you to the picture-perfect WinMock at Kinderton that morning were bright smiles, beautiful flowers, delicious food and drink, and fun shopping with local vendors — all of our favorite things. Most of all, an air of anticipation filled every corner of that gorgeous venue, along with the brightly lit word of the day: SHINE!
If you’re an avid reader of Forsyth Magazines, you look forward every month to the long-running Women on the Move column in Forsyth Woman, spotlighting the exciting accomplishments of some always-amazing local women. With the realization that a larger celebration of “Women on the Move” was in order, Forsyth Woman magazine publisher Brooke Eagle gathered a creative team to put together the inaugural conference in 2022. This second version of the conference was equally as impactful as the first event, filled with purposefully chosen speakers, incredibly generous sponsors
presented by
and supporters, and an audience of eager women anxious to share and grow together. There’s no doubt that “Empowered Women Empower Women!”
Also in true Forsyth Woman style, WOMC 2023 was a wonderful opportunity to support local businesses through on-site shopping, and swag bags for participants, filled with goodies and special discounts from local businesses — plus there were amazing door prizes presented throughout the day!
Best of all — this was an event (and always will be!) for literally every woman, no matter your age, career, or personal circumstances. You didn’t necessarily need to be a business owner or budding entrepreneur, but simply a woman looking to improve herself and SHINE her own very special light in the world! If you were lucky enough to attend this year’s incredible conference, you likely left with a new friend or two, a new creative idea, and definitely with a new attitude!
Updates on next year’s Women on the Move conference — tentatively set for Monday, March 25, 2024 — will be coming soon, so stay tuned to Forsyth Woman and all our social media pages for a life-changing date to add to your calendar!

Fiddle & Fig owners Morgan Holt and Jamie Lapp have built a business around helping others create spaces that welcome people and invite joy.
Now, the two are expanding their home decor shop across the entire bottom floor of their current location in WinstonSalem, and expect the completion of the project to be open in June, with an added twist —they’ll be serving beer, wine, southern sweet tea, bottle sodas, and select fresh snack boxes!
This inviting and inspiring shopping experience was originally opened by Morgan and Jamie in historic West End in October 2020. Their shared goal was to lead others to make time spent together a top priority, and create a home that’s authentic and welcoming. The special touches and intentional design of their space fosters a sense of belonging and interest.
TIMING IS EVERYTHING
“When we opened in the fall of 2020, we had an event space upstairs that we rented out, and had visions of hosting many pop-ups and classes,” says Jamie. “COVID was still causing restrictions on capacity and in the winter of 2020, the gathering capacity was limited to 10 people. We decided it was best to switch up the space and put only inventory there.”
While enjoying that space for products such as rugs and their popular wood-framed verse signs, but still hopeful they could bring their envisioned “gathering space” to life, the winter of 2022 brought new possibilities.
“The landlord of our building — and owner of the former Poppyseed Provisions — approached us about expanding next door,” explains Morgan. “Poppyseed closed its doors
May 2023 | 49
in February 2023, and as part of a grander plan for our building, he asked if we would like to expand over into that space.”
For Morgan and Jamie, that translated to closing their 1,000-sq.ft. of upstairs space, while expanding next door into another 2,000-sq.-ft. – including a bar area, two additional bathrooms, and more office space.
“We will now have full use of the outdoor green space and patio behind the building” says Jamie. “A door has been cut from our store into the space next door, and the stairs were removed, allowing for more retail space and displays. We are excited to eliminate the flight of stairs for our customers and have everything on the same floor!”
Morgan and Jamie have plans for a large gathering table that seats over 20 people for the middle of the expansion, with additional seating available throughout. Their team is also working to schedule pop-ups and classes to bring the WinstonSalem community together in their brand new “gathering space.” Morgan and Jamie say they want the community to feel the true goodness of their vision, which is gathering with friends and family, as well as experiencing the unmistakable joy and gratefulness when welcoming others into your home!
It’s a positive move for all, as Alkali Hair Studio is expanding into the old Fiddle & Fig upstairs space, creating exciting growth — and more still to come for the property. Morgan and Jamie are more than thankful for the wonderful space and their neighbors in the building!
“We will expand our offerings of kitchen items, add greeting cards and more paper goods, men’s products such as grilling accessories and spices, and pampering gifts,” says Morgan. “We hope to be your one-stop shop for home goods and gift giving!”

FAMILY TIES
Morgan and Jamie are family in more ways than one. Jamie’s daughter married Morgan’s brother this past March — and Fiddle & Fig literally wouldn’t exist without them!
“My daughter’s relationship with Morgan’s brother introduced our families,” says Jamie. “We were living in Pennsylvania at the time, and whenever Morgan and her family came to visit, I was excited to show her around once we realized we shared a love for shopping and home décor. We discovered we had a similar style and taste!”
Jamie and her husband decided to make the move to WinstonSalem, feeling an opportunity for new business was waiting. Fiddle & Fig’s popular signature soy wax candles, however, are hand-poured in Jamie’s hometown in Pennsylvania — and now available in 21 scents!
As Fiddle & Fig continues to expand, Morgan and Jamie have one request for their customers: Please continue to support local businesses! In an ever-changing economy, local businesses are working hard to shift and continue to bring Winston-Salem the best food, goods, and services.
To enjoy your own pleasant stroll through Fiddle & Fig, and some much-needed gathering time with a good friend or two, visit the store at 403 West End Boulevard in Winston-Salem, 336-283-9220. Visit and shop online at Fiddle-fig.com, and stay up-to-date on events on Facebook (FiddleandFigMarket) and on Instagram @fiddleandfigmarket. Shop hours are Tuesday through Saturday 10:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m.

PROVE YOUR PROMISE IN THE VALLEY
I likely aged myself, yet I remember that song, although it was written in 1964 by the Dixie Cups, nine years before I was born. I wonder if they had that name before there were actual Dixie cups we drank out of! It was a fun song filled with all the expectations and excitement of what marriage could be “Goin to the chapel of love.” I remember the day we were married, 30 years ago last month, and we were married in a chapel during spring in California. My wife and I were young, she was 19, and I was 20, and we had it all figured out, not! The truth is, we had no idea what we were doing. Yet there we stood, her in a frilly and flowing dress and me in a black tuxedo with a sad little excuse for a mustache running across my upper lip We stood face-to-face, exchanging vows and making promises to one another, promises which, at that moment, were not put to the test. After all, it was our wedding day, and although we exchanged vows and made promises, we like most people were thinking more about the wedding reception and watching Aunt Lila make a fool of herself on the dance floor.
I have officiated many weddings, and although I love standing with couples as they exchange their vows and make a covenant, which is what a marriage is built on, I have always thought the vows we take are not entirely based on reality. They should read more like this- “Here I stand with all my baggage, hurts, and brokenness. Tomorrow morning, I will not look this good!
It won’t always be easy, and I know we will go through hard times and moments when I am not your favorite person. We will undoubtedly experience deep valleys, and I can’t promise I will always say or do the right thing. I probably won’t. Oh yes, I also snore really loud and don’t like anyone telling me what to do. Are you all in?” Wouldn’t you agree? Those vows speak the truth of what your “I do” genuinely meant on your wedding day. Would you have said, “Yes, I am all in for that craziness? I DO!”
It’s soon, or maybe years after the wedding has passed, that you realize this one truth, a truth you did not fully understand on day one. In marriage, you don’t prove your promise at the altar. You prove your promise in the valley. It’s not at the altar where you show you’re all in. It’s in the middle of the valley- together.
by JAVIER & SHANNAN LABRADOR,
Regardless of how you start, we will have seasons of marriage where we find ourselves standing in the valley, a place that seems so low and painful we can’t see how we will climb out of it. It’s in these moments that the promises we made are put to the test. Will we stand with one another and walk through the valley together- for better or worse, as we committed to? Will we choose to pick up the other and carry them through the difficult season- in sickness and health, as we committed to? Or will we decide to leave the other behind in the valley because this is not what we signed up for when we said, “I do?” The valleys will come, I promise you, and in the middle of the places we don’t want to be, we are called to stand with our spouse, once again face-to-face, and say, “I do commit to standing with you. I do promise to fight for you and us. I do vow to remain faithful to you. I do choose us- once again.”
The valleys we face in marriage are necessary. We are strengthened, stretched, and drawn closer to our spouses through them. And there is the keyword, through the valley. To experience the mountain tops in our marriage, we must go through the valley, not around it. Even in the valley, there is beauty. In the valley season, you find yourself today or will in the future; I encourage you to stand together, climb the mountain as one and prove the promise you made at the altar. Remember where you started and return to the “chapel of love.”

Midtown Cafe and Dessertery
A longstanding Winston-Salem icon, Midtown Cafe & Dessertery is always my go-to resource for supplying family gatherings with delicious cakes. As someone who is often too lazy to bake, Midtown makes online ordering and pick-up convenient, allowing customers to reserve a variety of cake slices, full cakes and pies, and other menu items ahead of schedule.
Coconut is a summertime staple, with Midtown’s perfectly sweet Coconut Cake being a customer favorite year-round. Their light and fluffy Strawberry Shortcake is topped with whipped cream, while the tangy Lemon Bar satisfies those craving a hint of tartness in their desserts.
A NEW LOOK AND A NEW BAR
If you haven’t been inside the restaurant recently, you are missing out on the dining room’s brand new remodel, including the updated dessert area designed with a full-glass look in mind, similar to an aesthetic found in many European bakeries. This summer, stop by Midtown Cafe’s new and complete coffee bar debuting seasonal coffee drinks and mocktails. One refreshing coffee drink to cool down with is the Shaken Oat Milk Caramel Coconut Cold Brew, bringing a sweet kick of energy over ice for a morning or afternoon pick-me-up. Not in the mood for coffee? The cafe’s Frozen Mango Mocktail serves as an alcohol-free, tropical treat.
BREAKFAST & BRUNCH = MOUTHWATERING MORNINGS
Aside from top-notch coffee and cakes, Midtown is well-known for the breakfast, lunch, and dinner options listed on its extensive dining menu. Start your day with Fruity French Toast or the newly added and deliciously fluffy Oatmeal Pancakes topped with chopped pecans, strawberries, and a blueberry drizzle.
Brunch-goers love Midtown’s Bubbly Flights, which offer four unique spins on typical champagne cocktails. Out of seven new spring flight flavors, the Forsyth Magazines ladies were able to try the Peach Mojito, Strawberry Pina Colada, Hummingbird, and Huckleberry Lemonade concoctions. Inspired by Midtown’s Hummingbird cake, the Hummingbird flavor on the Bubbly Flight was my personal favorite, with a crisp pineapple flavor and a hint of cinnamon.
PRE-DESSERT DELICIOUSNESS
Midtown’s Shrimp Tacos are packed with jumbo shrimp, corn salsa, and avocado crema served in flour tortillas, alongside the cafe’s delectable Pesto Pasta Salad. Seafood lovers will also rave about the Crab Cake Sandwich with a spicy remoulade, in addition to the Salmon Berry Feta Salad with a raspberry vinaigrette dressing for a healthier dinner option.
The Cali Burger is a beef-lover’s dream. Served with Swiss cheese, tomato, bacon, and avocado, the Cali burger is topped off with a signature Cali sauce on a warm, buttery bun to tie the ingredients together. Finish the burger off with a side of Midtown’s crispy fries, which the Forsyth Magazines ladies happily snacked on throughout the night.
A summertime backyard cookout meets a popular Southwest favorite with the Barbecue Chicken Quesadilla. Stuffed with barbecue chicken, perfectly melted cheese, bacon, and optional-to-add caramelized onions, this quesadilla is served alongside homemade potato chips and is easy to eat or share with family and friends.

THRIVE THROUGH MENOPAUSE
by JANE BURNETTE
Women are considered menopausal when they have gone one full year without a menstrual cycle. The age range is anywhere from age 45-55 years old. Sex hormones estrogen and progesterone go back to pre-pubescent years of life. Like the days leading up to your period, menopause can be an excellent barometer on how you have lived your life.
In this age and phase of life, women tend to be more established in their careers, they may be empty nesters, and they could potentially be caring for their parents. This next chapter brings greater wisdom and less concern for things that don’t really matter.
I want to discuss some of the common complaints of menopause, what to do about them, and how to embrace this second spring in a woman’s life!
First, let’s discuss common complaints and issues that arise as hormones shift.
1 - Hot flashes
This is a big complaint that usually causes issues with sleep. If you suffer from intense hot flashes, this can be a sign of insulin resistance. Estrogen levels significantly decline in menopause and estrogen helps keep us more insulin sensitive.
2-Increased belly fat
Excess cortisol, our stress hormone, tends to cause our body shape to change. We may notice a thicker waistline than what we had in our 20s. Estrogen and progesterone are antagonists to cortisol and when we don’t have them balancing out cortisol, it seems like almost overnight we are buying a larger size pair of jeans. In addition, elevated cortisol makes us crave more starchy, sugary carbs. This can also cause weight gain.
3-Disrupted sleep
As mentioned above, hot flashes can disrupt sleep for ladies in menopause. The good news is, when we reduce hot flashes, sleep improves!
4-Decline in brain function
When estrogen decreases, women report issues with cognitive function. You may walk into a room and forget why you were there, can’t remember the name of an acquaintance you have known for years, or have increased your sticky note reminders. Again, the decline in estrogen plays a role here.
5-High cholesterol
Cholesterol is a precursor to all of your sex hormones. When the ovaries stop cranking out the majority of sex hormones, cholesterol can increase. Don’t get on a statin just yet! Try the following lifestyle modifications to see if you can naturally reduce cholesterol and the “bad” LDL number.
Now for TWO ways to improve symptoms associated with menopause and how you can look and feel your best through menopause and beyond!
The following lifestyle and behavior modifications work in tandem to improve all of the above!
1-Improve insulin sensitivity
Follow a high protein, healthy fats, and low carb diet. Get the majority of your carbohydrates from: colorful above ground vegetables, low sugar fruits (i.e. all variety of berries), healthy fats that come from olive oil, avocados, coconut, and nuts and seeds, and high quality proteins preferable grass-fed meats, wild caught fish, and plants high in protein (i.e., organic soy and lentils). Protein should be emphasized to prevent muscle loss leading to sarcopenia.
Reduce your eating window to 8 hours a few days a week. As you get off the blood sugar roller coaster of needing carbs every few hours by prioritizing protein and healthy fats, this gets easier. Ketones, an alternative source of fuel, take over which has been shown to be beneficial in enhancing brain function.
Consume at least 80% of your diet from whole foods sources. Eat 20% or less from foods in a box, package or bag with multiple ingredients. Not only will this help you to be insulin sensitive again, but it also improves hypertension and reduces LDL.
You should notice hot flashes decrease in frequency allowing you to get a good night of sleep!
2-Move often and lift heavy Leisurely walking, preferably outside, will help reduce cortisol and get rid of what has been called, “menopausal belly.” Aim to walk at least 10,000 steps a day. Incorporate some resistance training into your weekly routine. Resistance training will help improve the insulin response while adding or holding on to muscle mass. Exercise of all kinds is an incredible preventative to cognitive decline.
Following these simple (not necessarily easy at first) tips will improve all health markers, allowing you to thrive through menopause! I love this quote from Kim Cattrall, “I see menopause as the start of the next fabulous phase of life as a woman.”

Making Dollars, Making $ense
BY BRANDON JAMES, FINANCIAL ADVISOR
Money is an emotional topic. Whether we are saving money or spending money, we usually make those decisions based on how it makes us feel rather than formulating decisions based on logic. However, emotions are probably what motivate us to save to begin with. Feeling the need to save for a house, retirement, or even college education is emotional because it is tied to a desire to be comfortable. When investing to reach your goals, volatility in the stock market can appear to threaten your plans. Some people believe that when their investments have dropped, it is time to sell because they don’t want any more downside. This is an emotional decision, and one that comes with consequences. The problem with getting out at a time when stocks have depreciated is that you have to know when to get back in. Without a crystal ball, you run the risk of selling your stocks at lows and buying back in at highs.
As advisors, we can remove the emotion from making financial decisions with our clients. Taking away the emotional piece and making decisions based on math and logic helps our clients “stay the course” and remain on track within their financial plan. This doesn’t mean that emotions shouldn’t come into play when making important decisions, but it does mean listening to our clients and gaining a full understanding of the situation so, together, we can make a logic-based decision. There are always going to be news headlines which can provoke emotional responses. When a topic or headline plays to the fear and panic emotions, all attention is on the headline…rather than a plan. Focusing on facts and not feelings can help prevent the knee-jerk reaction to panic.
Having a written financial plan that is regularly updated and reviewed can assist in financial decision making. It gives our clients confidence, even during times of market volatility. I often discuss this exact concept when meeting with clients. I explain that the output of the written plan is based solely on math. When we are “stress testing” certain variables, like retirement age, the math doesn’t lie. However, it is up to human behavior to maintain the input of the plan. Making logic-based decisions around spending and savings rates can keep you on course to achieve your goals.
All investing involves risk including loss of principal. No strategy assures success of protects against loss.

Things That Go ‘Bump’ in the Night: The Ghosts of Old Salem
by RENEE SKUDRA
In 1766, Moravian missionaries from Pennsylvania made a long and difficult trek halfway down the eastern seaboard to northwest NC where they ultimately established a colonial town named Old Salem. The word “Salem” is Hebrew in origin and means peace. In 1772, Salem College was founded as a girls’ primary school by the settlers who believed in an equal education for men and women. In 1890, the school began offering college degrees, eventually becoming a liberal arts women’s college. Today it has the distinction of being the oldest female education establishment in the United States.
However, the name “Salem,” ironically, may not have portended a peace for all of its inhabitants, some of whom still call the community home. For hundreds of years Old Salem has enjoyed a reputation for spirit activity and unexplainable phenomenon, with many supernatural occurrences abounding at the college. When a high school history teacher friend told me the story of running into a ghost himself while working one summer in the Salem Tavern Museum, my interest was immediately piqued. Quite shaken, he immediately quit his job. I began my own investigation of the haunts of Old Salem and do believe that the spirits are alive and well (so to speak) and not particularly shy about making their existence known to an open-minded visitor.
The most famous ghost story concerns Andreas Kresmer, a shoemaker who lived in the Single Brothers’ House on the corner of Academy and Main Streets. While helping to excavate a cellar in the building, an overhang of soil collapsed, crushing the 33-year-old man who was wearing a distinctive
red cap at the time of his death. In quick succession stories arose of a short man with a red cap moving through the hallways of the home and in the building’s cellar. On one occasion one of the town’s most prominent citizens and a guest went into the cellar and both recounted simultaneously seeing the apparition of the Little Red Man which quickly vanished.
Gramley Hall, once a student residence and now Salem College’s library, has also had numerous ghostly visitors associated with it. Shortly after it opened, a young woman named Margaret committed suicide by hanging herself on a rafter of a third floor ceiling. There are numerous reports of anguished wails, loud knocking on the walls, the sound of marbles hitting the floor, and the movement of a heavy crate being dragged across the floor. In 1907 the death of two girls occurred by an electrocution accident and their apparitions have been seen, accompanied by deep cold, odd noises, footsteps and screams. Still others have reported seeing a little blonde girl in Victorian dress, dubbed “Nancy” in the building who hides things but returns them when politely asked.
The Babcock Residence Hall enjoys a lot of paranormal activity, too. A portrait of Mary Babcock Reynolds, daughter of tobacco magnate R.J. Reynolds, Sr., hangs in the lobby’s building. Numerous students have claimed that her facial expressions will change if you offend her and that her eyes follow you about. I can attest to the latter happening to me while standing in the hall’s periphery.
The Single Sisters Building at 601 S. Church St. now contains offices and classrooms. There are regular reports that its basement has a very aggressive presence who inhabits it and a photograph taken by one student apparently reveals an image of an angry face looking back at her from behind a heavy metal door. Figures have been seen moving in the windows and strange whispers heard in the building’s corridors; there is also a sensation of warm air suddenly turning icy cold.
There are other stories. Clewell Dormitory is said to be haunted by the ghost of a young girl who died when she fell down an old elevator shaft. The Fine Arts Center has a phantom pianist who can be heard playing the piano or organ late into the night despite the building being locked and empty. A patron who died in Theatre 2 still lingers there and haunts the room with mischievous deeds and spooking unsuspecting students.
Spirits have also regularly been seen at the J. Blum House, Distribution Center, and on Bank Street hill where a young child named David lost his life while sledding on an icy hill. If you are not too afraid to venture out one night to Old Salem, you may run into a resident spirit who seems alive but is probably in point of fact not doing very well. Take note that if you see The Lady in White roaming the May Del amphitheater, she is supposedly a friendly spirit unlike the sinister spirit which appears frequently as a black orb under the nearby stone bridge.

Trusted Care for Every Woman
by MARTIE EMORY
Every woman has a story — and maybe a mother, sister, or aunt who’s been touched by breast cancer. Early detection has never been more important, and Atrium Health Wake Forest Baptist Outpatient Imaging has made keeping up with mammograms a bit easier. Two convenient locations — in both Winston-Salem and Kernersville — offer hours that make it easy to arrange for an appointment that suits your schedule.
We all remember journalist Katie Couric’s breast cancer diagnosis last year, and as part of her words of wisdom after diagnosis and treatment, she left us with a powerful quote. She tells that after hearing her doctor say the word cancer, her feeling of “heartstopping, suspended animation” went from disbelief to resignation. “Given my family’s history of cancer, why would I be spared? My reaction went from ‘Why me?’ to ‘Why not me?’”
In interviews she also noted her immense gratitude for dedicated scientists and doctors working to find better ways to analyze and treat breast cancer — and the importance of advocating for ourselves!
Serving the women of the Winston-Salem area for the past 14 years, Atrium Health Wake Forest Baptist Outpatient Imaging partners with the expert radiologists of Atrium Health Wake Forest Baptist, who are both sub-specialized and board-certified in diagnostic interpretation, along with providing the benefits of the latest technology. The outpatient facility offers affordable pricing for both insured and uninsured patients, along with the highest quality, patient-centric care. You’ll also find the staff dedicated to your comfort and convenience.
Adding mammography into a regular wellness routine has helped reduce breast cancer mortality rates by 40%, and while a large percentage of women diagnosed with breast cancer have no family history, having a mother, sister, or daughter who has been diagnosed with breast cancer does increase your own chances. Accountability is also important, and many women enlist the help of a “buddy” to make sure their annual screening is scheduled on time. Make a point of going for a mammogram with your mother, sister, or best friend, to keep each other on track!

MOTHER’S DAY GIFTS Heartfully Handmade
by SUSAN BOYOUNG BAILEY SCHABACKER
Wondering what to give your mother to make her feel special this Mother’s Day? You can go all out and get the biggest and most expensive gift you can think of, or you can keep it simple and just spend some quality time with her. But if you’re looking for a way to celebrate that also helps you relax and de-stress, making DIY gifts might be the perfect option.
Making homemade gifts not only gives you a chance to show appreciation for your mom, but it also allows you to enjoy some therapeutic art activities together. Plus, homemade gifts are always appreciated more than anything you could buy in a store. Consider making some heartfully handmade DIY gifts together.
DIY gifts offer a unique way of expressing your appreciation and the sentiment behind your gifts will make her feel extra special. Since it’s the thought that counts, there’s no need to overspend. With the season of spring in the air and Mother’s Day quickly approaching, here are some inspiring ideas to help you craft thoughtful and meaningful homemade gifts:
• Create a personalized photo album or scrapbook of your favorite memories with Mom. Collect photos, write heartfelt captions, and make sure to include sweet words of gratitude. Reflect on all the conversations you’ve shared, words of wisdom, and even those annoying lectures you got when you were grounded. You can also include your fav memories, special places, and dates. Glean from the highlights of what you want to remember and share. Then type up and print out or handwrite quotes to assemble in a scrapbook, or create a collage/montage work of art on a canvas or paper of your mom’s sayings.
• Exercising your creativity, working with your hands, and giving what’s been heartfully handcrafted can be important art therapy. As the beautiful buds bloom and blossom, whether it’s a single flower, greenery, or an entire bouquet, create the perfect pairing with a work of art vase. Save and repurpose wine, beer, sake, soda, and kombucha bottles to
creatively transform into beautiful vases. For visual elements, cut out printed images, pictures from magazines, and dried pressed flowers and/or herbs. Paste these onto the vase and, optionally, add color with any medium (oil, acrylic, water color, pastel, markers, colored pencils, and/or crayons) or keep it monochrome or black and white.
• Assemble a creative gift basket filled with items special to her - whether it’s homemade candles, fresh or dried flowers, or a selection of her favorite tea blends with little details that show her how much thought you put into her gift. Tuck in a few small self-care pampering gifts that are cozy and smell good such as warm fuzzy socks, bath bombs, or calming essential oils.
• Get active with art activities together - try painting, sketching, or pottery making as a fun activity to bond over and create something beautiful together. If you are unable to be physically present with your mom on Mother’s Day, why not organize an online art class for both of you? You can both learn about painting techniques or even try out some digital art styles.
• Set up an outdoor picnic - grab a blanket, pack some snacks and drinks and head outdoors for some quality time with Mom in nature. It’s a great way to spend time together while enjoying the blooming season of spring. Pack a fruit basket, sandwiches, and sweet picnic treats ahead of time to make this a no-fuss, no-muss time together.
• Make use of nature’s supplies - all you need are some collected leaves, pebbles and twigs to create wonderful artwork pieces that will remind Mom of the beauty of nature every time she looks at it.
Whichever ideas you choose to go with this Mother’s Day, make sure they come from the heart. Put a smile on her face and celebrate your special bond when you create meaningful projects that celebrate and commemorate her life, her important role in your life, and the beautiful bonds that continue.

Puppy Love
by JEAN MARIE JOHNSON
So there I was, seated in a curtain draped room in the Emergency Department, awaiting my husband’s next round of test results. We’d been there, done that, and knew the drill: it promised to be a long Thursday night. This time, I remembered to grab my phone charger before pulling out of the garage to make the familiar trek down Silas Creek Parkway – at rush hour. Things always seem to happen at rush hour.
Settled in, a new text beckoned:
Hey, look at this…
OMG, she’s adorable.
You better apply fast; it’s first come, first served with these dogs.
I’ve got so much going on, and she’s only a year old. You know what I said: NO PUPPY!
It’s your call.
My husband stirred:
Are you working?
Uh, yeah. Just finishing up something.
I pressed “Send” and quickly reminded myself that just because I had applied didn’t mean that I was obligated. Right...Bright and early on Monday morning I learned that if I was “interested,” the dog would be brought to my house on Friday morning. Otherwise, she would be offered to the next vetted applicant in line.
Wait, she means THIS FRIDAY. I’m not ready. We’re not ready. We gave all of Miss Noelle’s doggy things to the shelter. She’s a PUPPY. What am I thinking? I must be out of my mind!
By 2 PM that Friday, we were the proud pup parents of an affectionate, squirmy, curious, energetic, mini poodle mix known as “Paris.” In a mere four weeks, she has injected immeasurable joy and laughter into our daily life, turned more than a few things upside
down, and provided that unique brand of unconditional love that only man’s best friend can offer.
Is getting a dog in retirement “right” for you?
Well, as the saying goes, “It’s complicated.” Here are a few key “puppy love” considerations to help you make the best decision:
BRINGING A DOG INTO YOUR LIFE MEANS ENTERING A COMMITTED RELATIONSHIP
We can become rather set in our ways as we get older or feel that we are finally doing things our way and that’s that. But as with any relationship, bringing a dog into your life means working things out by learning what your new pet needs, negotiating a few specifics, and setting some boundaries. Maybe you wouldn’t dream of getting out for a walk before 9 AM, but that may be way too late for your pet. Are you willing to make changes in your daily patterns to accommodate your new family member?
IT WILL TAKE TIME AND PATIENCE TO INTEGRATE YOUR NEW PET
Remember that for your pet, everything is unfamiliar – including you. She will need time to get to know your idiosyncrasies and the rhythm of your household. Are you willing to cut her some slack while she acclimates to her new life with you?
ACCEPT THAT YOU WILL LEARN FROM ONE ANOTHER
Yes, you do need to establish yourself as the Alpha Dog, but you also need to learn your new pet’s likes, dislikes, and preferences. While I usually walk three times a day, I’ve observed that Paris needs more opportunity to expend her energy. Thankfully, we have a fully fenced yard which lends itself to spontaneous episodes of THE ZOOMIES!
FORGIVENESS IS KEY
Just like you, your new pet will make mistakes. Whether that’s “having an accident” in the house or climbing on your desk and chomping on your morning vitamins (“PARIS, NO!!!!”) being able to redirect and forgive are critical.
BACKUP ARRANGEMENTS WILL BE NECESSARY
My friend – the one who texted me that fateful night in the ER – travels frequently. She has Plan A, B, and C accommodations lined up to happily take in her two small dogs when she is off having Me Time. Consider who will care for your pet when you’re out on a day trip, a long weekend, or that cruise you’ve been planning.
BE OPEN TO GETTING THE HELP YOU NEED
By all means, inquire about training! There are numerous qualified resources available to help you and your new pet get off to a great start.

Oils are great sources of fat, and fat is a great source for energy. Fat is also responsible for many necessary body functions, like protecting the brain and other vital organs, and it’s essential for your body to absorb vitamins that are fat soluble. Fat can even help you maintain healthy cholesterol levels. That last part sounds counterintuitive doesn’t it? Because we have been told to eat less fat in order to have good heart health but it’s only bad fat that’s bad for you and when you mix bad fat with refined carbs, you have a recipe for heart disease!
When we choose what oils to cook, marinate and dress with, we want to focus on some and steer clear of some others. Some of these may sound healthy and be all the rage, while really, when you look at their ratios and what kind of fats they are, you will pass them by in the store and leave them where they belong: on the shelf.
Seed oils are typically the worst of oils. Cottonseed, grapeseed, safflower, sunflower - these are all obvious seed oils but some that you might not think of as seed oils are corn, canola, rice bran and soy. The majority of these used in foods will be refined oils, using high heat to process them. Even when they are cold pressed and unrefined, they still contain high polyunsaturated fats, and this is where they create havoc in the body. When we consume them, the oils spout off free radicals and produce excess inflammation - the Omega 6 part of oil is pro-inflammation. This doesn’t mean that seeds are bad for you in whole or ground form. Seeds are great when they aren’t processed into oil, so enjoy your sunflower seeds in the shell at the baseball game.
The free radicals and inflammation can have some unfavorable effects on your body. Brain fog, mood swings, and headaches can all contribute to excess free radicals in the body. The inflammation can reduce your overall circulation, creating a host of issues in the body like reducing your body’s ability to heal whatever ails you, reducing brain function, excess body weight and increasing your risk of heart disease and a host of cancers.
Not All Oils Are Created Equal
by CANDICE DEAL
Coconut oil is a great oil for your skin, but it’s better left to skincare than using it in the kitchen. Coconut oil is 98% saturated fat (the bad fat). Palm oil is an oil we see in the ingredients list in an array of foods. From Valentine’s Day chocolates to peanut butter, it’s everywhere. The palm oil ingredient we see on food packaging is going to be refined palm oil and that is where the benefit of unrefined palm oil is lost and we put palm oil on the “watch out for” list since it’s very high in palmitic acid and that is high in saturated fatty acid.
Let’s get to the good oils! Avocado, almond, peanut, macadamia, and olive oil. These are all heavy monounsaturated fats. This makes flaxseed oil a great oil, too, but it’s not great if you put it with heat. It’s a better one for dressings in the kitchen which means it doesn’t make my shopping list because I need oils that are multifunctional, good for cooking, skin care, and dressings!
Our good oils are loaded with Omega 3s, the anti-inflammatory omega, and they are loaded with HDL, the good cholesterol that picks up the excess LDL in your system and moves it to your liver, which breaks it down and kicks it to the curb. Your brain loves Omega 3 rich oils as
it feeds your cognitive function and keeps the brain healthy - because your brain is 60% fat!
A good shopping tip when selecting your olive oils, is to look for oils that have a stamped harvest date. Olive oil can go rancid if it sits for too long. Most extra virgin olive oil is good on a shelf for two years and it should be purchased within one year after harvest date; once it’s opened you want to use it up within six months. Choosing one that’s in a dark glass will keep the light out and keeping it in a cabinet away from sunlight is best when storing it at home.
Avocado oil is a great choice for cooking because it has a high temperature smoke point, higher than olive oil. If your dish calls for a sauté pan set on medium-high or high, this is a great choice to ensure you don’t set off any smoke alarms! It’s high in Omega 3 oils and has a very low saturated fat content. It’s also loaded with Vitamin A and E and it’s an oil for feeding your skin and hair!
An easy way to add some good, healthy fat to your daily diet is to just add in a small amount of oil to your meals. Use it as a base for meats when adding herbs and spice, add some when cooking your sauteed veggies, use it to make a salad dressing. Small but mighty changes!

Life Planned Well
by ANDREW PARKER
Like all significant decisions in life that create time markers, markers you reference other dates and events from, retirement has to be at the top of the list. You’re either already there, planning what to do when you get there, or so far away you’re not even thinking about it. If you’re so far away you’re not thinking about it, be thankful that your body doesn’t require 5 minutes of habitual stretching every morning before loosening up enough to brush your teeth. That said, planning for retirement applies to everyone previously mentioned.
If you’re on the cusp of retirement, you’ve planned at least a bit of what you’ll do, probably enough to fill up the first six months. Financials have been sorted for the most part, and how your days will unfold has been sketched out. Whether you’ll work here and there, visit friends and family, or take trips you’ve always dreamed of. Even with all those things to do while soaking up a new season in life, planning shouldn’t end. It’s essential not only for direction but for the landing.
Retirement is a goal, though not the end of our goals. We all want to maintain a healthy and fun lifestyle throughout our senior years, though how we do that will change. Prioritizing time and placing value on the quality of time will put things in perspective. Spending less time on burdensome chores such as home maintenance, excessive yard work, and even cooking frees up time and energy for doing those things we want.
As we navigate life’s many twists and turns, we’re often faced with making quick decisions. In those moments, we plan according to the present, not always considering future ripple effects. Longterm decisions require careful thought and a bit more time to develop. It’s helpful to have an open dialogue about these decisions with the people who are most important to you. You’ll likely receive sound advice and a dash of reassurance. Everything down to health care, savings, and inheritance should be on the table. Some of these topics considered to be off-limits are, in fact, some of the most important. Spending a year abroad, moving to a retirement community, and leaving behind money for grandchildren’s college all require planning.
Health issues are one of the primary decision drivers during retirement years, often reactive versus proactive. Fortunately, senior living has dramatically changed in the past several decades. As retirement communities continue to evolve and adapt to their members’ desires, they’ve become quite different from those our grandparents knew. Activities, wellness, dining options, and accommodations have changed for the better. Keeping spouses and partners together longer is standard. Maintaining independence is vital.
Homestead Hills, a luxury life plan retirement community in Winston-Salem, has led innovative change in the senior living industry for over 25 years. Their “People First, Always” guiding principle speaks to their dedication to delivering quality services and amenities. Homestead Hills is unique in that it offers a variety of living spaces, including 2and 3-bedroom cottage homes and villa apartments in 1-, 2-, and 3-bedroom options, in addition to an array of on-site care services. Homestead Hills celebrates the transitions in retirement.
Whether preparing to explore new countries and cities or moving to a retirement community, find your perfect retirement by planning, discussing, and doing!

EIGHT GREAT MOVIES ABOUT EXTRAORDINARY WOMEN
by KAREN COOPER
The thought of warmer weather opens new doors of possibility and for many gives a welcome boost of energy we’ve been missing during the colder months. What better time to be inspired by women who broke down barriers and stepped out of their comfort zones to make extraordinary things happen? Here is a list that celebrates smart, passionate, resilient, independent women who often took great risks for what they believed in.
IRON JAWED ANGELS (2004)
Iron Jawed Angels is a powerful and moving tribute to the suffragettes who were instrumental in getting women the right to vote. Alice Paul (Hilary Swank) and Lucy Burns (Frances O’Connor) are young suffragettes operating under the National American Women’s Suffrage Association. After their exhaustive peaceful methods do not prove effective, they leave the organization to found the National Women’s Party. The women face many challenges and naysayers but refuse to give up.
HIDDEN FIGURES (2017)
The movie tells the true story of three black women— Katherine (Taraji P. Henson), Dorothy (Octavia Spencer), and Mary (Janelle Monáe) – who work at NASA in the 1960s. Despite the racism and gender inequality they face, these talented “human computers” continue to pursue their dreams and passions in the white male-dominated industry. In the end, the trio become the brains behind one of the greatest operations in history: the launch of astronaut John Glenn into orbit.
ERIN BROCKOVICH (2000)
Erin Brockovich (Julia Roberts) is an unemployed, single mother of three who has recently lost a personal injury lawsuit. With no other options, she goes to work as a legal assistant for the lawyer who represented her, Ed Masry (Albert Finney). She stumbles upon medical records placed in the wrong files and convinces Ed to let her investigate them. She discovers a cover-up involving contaminated water in a local community which is causing devastating illnesses among its residents. Because of her diligence, she plays a vital role in a fight for justice as the firm becomes involved in an anti-pollution lawsuit.
ELIZABETH (1998)
Elizabeth Tudor (Cate Blanchett) becomes queen of a divided and dangerous England in 1558. She is perceived as weak within her own country and abroad. There is every reason for her to marry, which might offer her security, but Elizabeth will be married only to her country. Although keenly intelligent and cautious, she must always carefully choose where to place her trust. This film chronicles the early years of Henry VIII’s heir and shows the young and inexperienced leader finding her footing and rebuilding the chaotic country.
SILKWOOD (1983)
This mostly forgotten biopic is an entirely hidden gem of female-led movies. Meryl Streep (Karen Silkwood) carries the lead as a nuclear plant worker who begins raising awareness of violations that could put workers at risk, and ultimately has a hand in revolutionizing the safety protocols for employees handling dangerous materials. Cher (Dolly Pelliker) also plays a supporting role in the film, and the movie really stands out in that it doesn’t try to glamorize or sanitize its unappealing subjects.
ON THE BASIS OF SEX (2018)
Ruth Bader Ginsburg (Felicity Jones) is a struggling attorney and new mother facing adversity in her fight for equal rights. Based on a true story, this film explores the early stages of RBG’s career as she learned to sway a court into realizing that certain laws discriminate by gender. Her success set the stage for laws that changed our culture forever and ultimately led her to become an associate justice of the United States Supreme Court from 1993 until her death in 2020
WILD (2014)
Distraught by the loss of her mother, the ending of her marriage, and a plunge into self-destructive behavior, Cheryl Strayed (Reese Witherspoon) decides to end her downward spiral and put the pieces of her life back together. With virtually no outdoor experience, a too heavy backpack and not much to go on but sheer will, Cheryl sets out alone to hike the Pacific Crest Trail -- one of the country’s longest and toughest through-trails.
MARY QUEEN OF SCOTS (2018)
Mary Stuart (Saoirse Ronan) is the cousin of Queen Elizabeth I (Margot Robbie). Mary intends to secure the throne, but there are obstacles in the way of her being Queen of Scotland. Firstly, Mary refuses to marry an Englishman, and instead marries a Frenchman. This decision costs her much respect and loyalty. Although Scotland does not think Mary a suitable ruler, she asks Elizabeth for support and hopes for them to equally rule their respective countries.

I GOT A ROOMMATE AT 30 and
I’m Not Ashamed
by AMY HILL
When I was graduating from high school, what I envisioned for my adult life by the age of 30 was drastically different from the reality I’m living now. I pictured myself as a homeowner married to my high school sweetheart by no later than the age of 24. No teenager ever imagines themselves moving in with a roommate after nearly a decade of living alone. In fact, society often balks at the untraditional thought of finding a platonic roommate outside of your twenties, but wrongfully so.
My roommate Jordan Sebastian and I have known each other since high school, but didn’t become close friends until we began attending our mutual married friend’s wedding, her baby showers, and her children’s birthday parties in our late twenties. Strangely enough, we both lived and worked in the Winston-Salem area for years, but never reconnected until we began realizing we had more in common than we initially thought. We frequently joked about the idea of moving in together and living across the street from our mutual friend and her family, but strangely, the joke began to creep into our brains as a true possibility. When our leases were ending around the same time, and with inflation and rent prices shooting through the roof, we decided the economically smart route was to find a nice two-bedroom apartment and split rent and utilities. What we didn’t expect, however, was that we were making gains not only financially, but also socially and emotionally.
Neither one of us realized how much we had needed each other’s company until the move. Although Jordan was much more apprehensive than I was about moving (shockingly, as someone who prefers traveling and doing most things solo), it only took a few comical move-in mishaps (accidentally setting off our security alarm, struggling with a stubborn dryer hose, etc.) for us to realize how much fun the next 12 months – and potentially longer – were going to be for us. Instead of viewing our move as a setback in adulthood, we began to realize that it might be the start of a healing period we both needed. As two single, young-ish professionals watching our peers get married and have children left and right, things happened exactly as they should at the right time.
Oddly enough, I was presented with an opportunity to begin traveling for weeks at a time at work, which was perfect for someone who loves travel as much as I do. The only qualm I had about the opportunity was the fear of leaving my cat in the hands of a stranger while I was away. Thankfully, Jordan and I moved in together just three weeks before I left for my first work trip, and although my cat was quite standoffish, I can rest assured that she is not lonely or hungry, and that she is in the hands of someone I trust.
Jordan is much more of an extrovert than I am with a rich social life, which is good for a hermit like myself. Living with someone with so many friends will challenge me socially, but will help pull me out of my introverted shell that can sometimes be to my detriment. Both of our parents are benefiting greatly from our move, as they are being bombarded less frequently with lonely FaceTime calls around 8:00 p.m. when they’re trying to watch their nightly sitcoms.
THINGS HAVE A FUNNY WAY OF WORKING OUT EXACTLY AS THEY SHOULD, AND WHAT SOCIETY MAY PERCEIVE AS A SETBACK CAN SOMETIMES BE THE STEPPING STONE IN THE RIGHT DIRECTION.
Being too independent for years didn’t allow us to grow in ways necessary to maintaining healthy romantic relationships, since we both aspire to get married one day and neither one of us have had to compromise in our living quarters. Being mindful of another person before we leave dirty dishes in the sink, or sacrificing some habitual “me” time to help each other cope with life’s hardships might be just the practice we need in order to make a long-term romantic relationship work with our future partners. Although we had roommates in college and in our early twenties, we have found that we are much better roommates to each other as adults with fully developed frontal lobes than we were to our previous roommates, who likely suffered from the selfish tendencies that young adults display.
Life is rarely black and white, and Jordan and I have discovered that our plans for ourselves are often vastly different from the plans God has in store for us. While we wait to see the future unfold, we will continue enjoying each other’s company and learning from each other along the way.

Designing an Outdoor Living Space
You Can’t Wait to Use
DEFINE THE SPACE
The first step in creating an outdoor living space is to define the space. You can use different materials to define the space, such as outdoor rugs, pavers, or a low wall. Defining the space helps to create a cohesive and inviting outdoor living area.
ADD COMFORTABLE SEATING
Outdoor seating is a must-have for any outdoor living space. Comfortable seating can be in the form of chairs, benches, or even a hammock. Add cushions and throw pillows to create a cozy and inviting space for relaxing.
CREATE SHADE
Creating shade is essential for enjoying your outdoor living space during the hot summer months. You can add shade with umbrellas, pergolas, or even a covered porch. Adding shade also protects your outdoor furniture from the sun’s harmful rays.
ADD LIGHTING
Lighting is an essential element of any outdoor living space. Adding lighting creates ambiance and allows you to enjoy your outdoor space even after the sun goes down. String lights, lanterns, and solar-powered lights are great options for adding lighting to your outdoor living space.
INCORPORATE PLANTS
Incorporating plants into your outdoor living space adds color, texture, and life. You can add plants in the form of potted plants, hanging baskets, or even a vertical garden. Plants also help to create a relaxing and peaceful atmosphere.

Like Me, Why You Probably Need a Pet, Too
On an insufferably hot day in February 2017, in a moment of reckless abandon, I got it into my head that I needed a dog. Years ago my beloved service animal, a Bichon Frise named Beauregard (after the same guy who ordered the firing of the first shots on Fort Sumter during the American Civil War) succumbed to renal failure. For months I was so heartbroken, it felt like I couldn’t breathe sufficiently; he had been part and parcel of my very being. When I graduated from the University of California, Berkeley, my trusty companion, sadly, was not at my side to see me receive my B.A in history or take his regular evening constitutional on the beautiful manicured lawns of the campus.
When I eventually made landfall in North Carolina, I finally figured that the time had come to patch up the hole in my heart that his passing had made. My reasoning led me to the notion that any budding Civil War historian worth his measure should have a canine buddy in tow, especially when the academic going got hot and heavy in graduate school at UNCG and emotional support became critical. In relatively short haste, following that act of circumspection, my mom and I adopted another Bichon from the County Shelter. An employee there told us that this might be the best decision we would ever make although later that week we questioned that as the dog lost no time in doing things which seemed to deliberately reflect an intention to make us crazy.
We all know that hearts can be won in a moment and mine was surely snagged when a 19-pound ball of white fluff came racing at me, almost knocking me down, grabbing my shoelaces and relieving himself against the legs of my new pair of Levi jeans. No matter – I would no longer be abject and dogless. I named him Jackson after General Stonewall and wondered if he, too, would have a penchant for lemons and a reputation for eccentricity. What I didn’t realize was that beneath that gleaming doublecoated perfectly white exterior lay a heart bent on mischief and irascibility. He was down for disaster. On the way home, Jackson succeeded in tearing up a copy of the Winston-Salem Journal and a box of Kleenex, barking incessantly the whole time.
by NILS SKUDRA
Over the past few years, things have not necessarily gotten better. For one thing, the dog has the instincts of a thief. When I’ve unwittingly turned my back for a moment, a grilled salmon dinner has suddenly disappeared, as well as a dish of scrambled eggs with goat cheese. On a stormy, rain-heavy afternoon, I walked into my bedroom only to discover that Jackson had peed on a beloved antique log cabin quilt purchased in Richmond, Virginia, doing so with apparent disdain and disregard. The same utterly wayward behavior was directed at a cherished cashmere sweater bought at a highbrow department store. Jackson seemed to take an absolute delight in destroying just about everything. Even my piano bench has suffered from his toothy terrors and the Art Deco armoire in the living room has battle scars where he managed to rip out a piece of its 1940s grain-resplendent wood. Simple delights like “walking the dog” are admittedly feats which test anyone’s patience and athletic prowess since he is not “good on the leash” with the result that he walks me – not the contrary. Since he’s joined our household, I may have to cope with the fact that perhaps service is not exactly what he is providing.
So I have these moments of doubt; is a dog really man’s best friend? And yet .. and yet. . who can dispute the obvious love he bears me, sleeping closely by my side every night on the bed, waking me with wet kisses and protecting me from strangers who tread uncomfortably close. When I give him a doggy treat, he
drops it onto my lap, and I am given to understand that it is his full unmitigated intention to share. When I study for an exam or practice piano, he curls up against my legs, seemingly approving the activity. The proof is in the pudding: he is my boy and I am his. For whatever it is worth, we have yoked our fates ineluctably together. I think of the words of the English poetess Frances Cornford in her poem “Feri’s Dream” because they tellingly express our truth, albeit in the words of a Georgian tradition:
“I had a little dog, And my dog was very small; He licked me in the face, And he answered to my call; Of all the treasures that were mine, I loved him best of all.”

Whether you’re surfing in the USA, partying in the USA (thanks to Miley Cyrus), or sun-bathing on the warm sand, you can’t go wrong with this classic beach-themed song (and many more golden oldies by The Beach Boys).
“Spring Love”- Stevie B
Stevie B’s first top ten hit on the dance charts is not just a club classic you’ll want to move and groove to, but will also get you pumped in your cardio workout. Spring into spring-spired workout or spring-cleaning mode, as you work up a sweat, burn some calories, and get into shape!
“Not Blinded by Chemistry” - Susan BoYoung Bailey
This simply sweet and soulful spring folksy song is included on Susan’s 1st album, Landscape Changes. Somehow, it’s all moonlight, candlelight, and sunlight of a blossoming spring day when the birds and bees are spinning in the air and the pollen is everywhere.
From classics like The Beatles’ “Here Comes the Sun” to more modern hits like Justin Bieber’s “Spring Break,” these sunny spring tunes will get you embracing the warmer weather you’ve been missing all fall and winter long with lots more sunny days ahead and on into summer.

THE WAY WE LIKE TO SHOPwhat
your shopping style says about your personality
by KAREN COOPER
THE ONLINE SHOPPER
You wouldn’t waste your time going to actual stores. Why would you when everything you need is just a click away on your computer or iPad? It’s quicker, easier, and way more convenient to shop online and the selection is endless. These shoppers tend to be technologically savvy and know what they want. They can be impatient and are used to instant gratification. The danger with this type of shopping is that it’s easier to overspend. It takes quite a bit of self-control to be an online shopper and stick to a budget.
THE METHODICAL SHOPPER
You have a plan when you shop and tend to follow a process when you arrive at the store to find exactly what you need at the right price. You’re not opposed to shopping around to ensure you get the highest quality item at the best price. People with this type of shopping habits are usually very meticulous, patient, and great at long-term planning. They are able to set a goal and work towards it until they have achieved it. They also make sensible, reliable partners, loyal friends, and good employees.
THE IMPATIENT SHOPPER
The way we like to shop – what your shopping style says about your personality!
What do your shopping habits say about you? Do you love shopping or not so much? Do you shop just to look around or do you go in only for what you need and leave?
Shopping can be a different experience for different people. For some it’s “retail therapy.” These shoppers can go from store to store for hours to find the perfect thing they need. Others prefer to shop from the comfort of their sofa or snuggled up in their bed where the online world of shopping is a shopaholic’s nirvana. The way a person shops can reveal things about their personality. Let’s take a look at six categories of shopping styles and see if you identify with any of them.
THE PREMIUM SHOPPER
You like to follow trends and you have an affinity for brand names and great quality. You don’t mind paying more to get the best and it’s reflected in the looks you put together. This attitude is probably true in most areas of your life as you most likely have the finest sheets, the very best food in your cupboards and drive the best car you can afford. All this suggests that image is important to you, as well as how people perceive you. You tend to invest a lot of time and energy into building the kind of life you have always dreamed of. The question is, does that life bring you contentment?
THE THRIFTY SHOPPER
You’re forever in search of the best bargain. Promotions, sales, and a good deal are what you’re about and you get a dopamine boost when you find the very thing you need at a discount price. This often means that you are a creative thinker, persuasive, and good at negotiations. This type of shopper is also one who is not easily conned or misled.
To you the process of shopping is a real chore. You have better things to do, you’re in a hurry, so you head to the store only when you really need something. You don’t shop around or mess with any bargain hunting. You choose the first item that more or less meets your requirements. If this shopping style describes you, you are a person who cuts through the crap to get things done. You are the first to take action in a situation when others aren’t sure what to do. You are most likely quite down-to-earth and practical.
THE LOYAL SHOPPER
You know your favorite places to shop and keep going to them time after time. You’ve got loyalty cards from all the stores you frequent and calculate your shopping so you can maximize your rewards points. This type of shopper is obviously loyal! They also tend to be organized and able to map out a clear path for themselves in life. They are trustworthy and stick to the plan. They are also good at analyzing situations and deciding on the best course of action whether it is in their careers, relationships or in their leisure time.

Conversations with Your BFF
Although there are many things Americans might divide over, the thought that time is precious is one I do believe we can all agree on. Whether you look at the lives of family and friends lost unexpectedly, who had plans for the future, or you live by scripture, and hear Matthew 6:34 saying, ‘Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own’ or Proverbs 27:1 stating, ‘Tomorrow is promised to no one’ we aren’t promised tomorrow, although many of us live there.
How can I live life to its fullest and make sure if tomorrow doesn’t come, that all is well? I am so glad you asked!
PLANNING FOR THE FUTURE IS GOOD, BUT YOU CAN’T LIVE THERE
We look ahead, put things off and postpone things for when we have ‘more time,’ but what if you knew you didn’t have long left, or someone you care about didn’t have long left. What would you change in the present? What would you do differently?
Here are eight ways you can make your todays better:
1) Each day you wake up and draw a breath is a new chance to make your life different and impact someone else’s life. You have to treat each day as a fresh new start. Leave yesterday behind and focus on what you can do today to make it the best day yet.
2) At the end of each day, as you put your head on your pillow, leave the day’s issues behind. Do not drag yesterday’s issues into a new day.
3) Wake up every day grateful for what you have and who you have in your life and appreciate everything. You may not be where you want to be as far as your job, but there are people who would love to have a job. Make the most of what you do and, if possible, use where you are in life to help another along in their journey.
4) Make a list of things or activities that make you happy and do those things. Know your limits and don’t do things you can’t afford, but if taking your
by REBECCA COOPER
dog for a walk brings you peace, yet you don’t take time to do it, make time! A ten minute walk around the block isn’t going to throw your schedule into that big of a tailspin.
5) Apologize to anyone you feel deep down you have wronged - you both will feel better. Saying ‘I’m sorry’ even for the littlest things can lift a great weight from your shoulders and make the other person know that they matter in your life.
6) It may seem to be a given, but don’t hold onto hating anyone. Hate destroys you from the inside out and does no one any good. If someone has wronged you, go to them and give them a chance to make things right, but if they don’t see the need to make peace
with you, for your own good, you have to let it go! Remember, not everyone has your heart and will care about hurting you.
7) Make time to call or contact those who mean the most to you. Everyone loves to know they crossed your mind and you took the time to call and say ‘Hi there. I was just thinking about you and wanted to let you know.’ That may seem insignificant, but it may be the only time that day that anyone shares a kind word. You can turn a day around with a few minutes of your time spent on another.
8) Don’t end a day with regrets. You may not have tomorrow, so if at all possible, make peace with those in your world.
