Did you know there is more than one type of rest? We all likely think about physical rest, but there are six additional types beyond physical: mental, spiritual, sensory, emotional, creative and social. Megan Taylor wrote a phenomenal article going over each type on page 32. It is so interesting that getting adequate sleep is only a small piece of the puzzle to feeling well rested. I saw a quote the other day that resonated with me on this topic. It said, “If you’re resting but guilting or shaming yourself for not being productive the whole time, that’s not actually rest.” Oh, wow! I had never thought about it this way before. Are you guilty of shaming yourself for not being productive or are you good at taking time to rest? I personally thrive on being productive and it can be hard to turn that off at times.

I encourage you to read Megan’s article and see how you can begin to feel more well rested. If you are constantly “running on E,” not only is it tough to be the best version of yourself, but it makes it nearly impossible to show up for others, too! Getting an adequate amount of (all types of) rest is the only way you can show up as the best friend, co-worker, sister, significant other, daughter, mother, etc.

I love the month of March because it means spring is here and warmer weather is on the way! And along with the great weather, LOTS of exciting events are coming up. This issue is full of events—so make sure you are reading every page! Don’t forget that you can always submit events on our website (Forsythwoman.com). This is, and always has been, a complimentary service that we offer.

Coming up on March 8th is International Women’s Day! Being a women’s magazine, I’d be remiss not to mention this important day! Learn more about the history of International Women’s Day and how we’re celebrating here in Winston-Salem on page 16.

As always, if you visit an event or business you saw in these pages, please let them know you found them in Forsyth Woman! Our advertising partners make this magazine possible to print each month and YOU, our amazing readers, are the “why” behind this publication.

We won’t have a GNO event this month (we’ll be consumed with our 2nd Annual Women on the Move Conference) but stay tuned for an April GNO date announcement soon! You can sign up for our monthly newsletter at forsythwoman.com to make sure you never miss an event announcement.

Wishing you a March full of celebrating the women you love!

Keeping It Real

SO YOU'RE READY TO QUIT

So you’re ready to quit? Been there a time or two. This life is not for wimps.

I watched my mama do hard things all my life. Nothing came easy, but she stayed in the fight! She refused to sit it out on the sidelines of life. She had every reason to quit, but she had every reason to make it, too. She kept her eyes on a higher purpose that proved so much bigger than that one moment in time. I watched God infuse her with strength that was not her own over and again.

So when I read about this dude, John Mark, calling it quits at only the second stop in his journey with the famous Apostle Paul, I find myself sharing Paul’s frustration with his wimpiness. Was he expecting a cakewalk?!

How many people would have lined up to take this adventure with the legendary Apostle Paul, the one determined to turn the world upside down for Jesus? (And he did!) The journey demanded much, but talk about living a significant life!

There’s no explanation given as to why John Mark packed up and got the heck out of Dodge. We just see that “John Mark left them and returned [home].” (Acts 13:13)

Maybe he felt homesick. Perhaps he felt more allegiance to the other leader, Barnabas, so watching Paul take the lead didn’t sit well with him. Did John Mark become ill? (If so, Paul and Barnabas likely faced the same bout with sickness. THEY didn’t bail!)

Maybe the dangers and difficulties simply proved more rigorous than he anticipated. Who knows? This young guy just doesn’t seem to be cut out for the hard stuff at this juncture of his maturity. (I’m frustrated with him but truth is, I see myself in him, too!)

We’ve all felt like quitting, haven’t we? It’s hard and just keeps getting harder. We feel desperate to pull the relief valve, if only for a few minutes. The intensity of the journey seems as if it will surely swallow us whole at times.

But hear me, friends. John Mark regretted his decision for the rest of his days. He knew he was made for more. Once he tasted a momentary reprieve, he quickly realized that the break with his purpose was breaking him.

It’s been a few long years of bizarre turbulence in our world. The battle seems to only intensify. While some folks enjoy the drama,

most of us feel the fatigue. It’s exhausting. We long for a reprieve, however we can get it. But friends, if we step away now, we’ll regret it. We’ll become a casualty in this war against all that is good and true.

The Lord has sent me to encourage your weary heart today. Don’t let the heaviness of this hour deter you from God’s destiny for you. I know it feels like you’re all by yourself at times, but that’s just not true! God Himself comes where you are and becomes your very present help. He’s too good to leave you to yourself.

In fact, if you determine to remain in His boat through these windtossed seas, I promise you that you’ll emerge with triumph from your testing . . . somehow, some way!

Did you know that the deliverance of many depends upon your steadfastness? If you don’t keep going, those waiting on the other side of these waters will not make it.

Keep going, weary traveler. Your best days are before you. You’ve come too far to quit! God is for you, and if He’s for you, all the stuff against you doesn’t amount to a hill of beans! He’s a very present help…for you…right now!

LKN FIRST ANNUAL TOUR DE BOUTIQUE

FAQs

What is the LKN Tour de Boutique?

The team at Forsyth Magazines knows a thing or two about shopping, and more specifically, shopping trips. Since 2010, we’ve hosted over 15 shopping events! We love turning a regular Saturday into an extraordinary Saturday with a non-stop, shop-til-you-drop adventure! The LKN Tour de Boutique is a self-guided tour of 10-12 local boutiques. These boutiques roll out the red carpet!

We all know the value and importance of shopping locally. It helps stimulate the local economy, creates jobs, and brings tremendous value to our community. It’s a one-of-a-kind event that you won’t want to miss!

What is the distance from Winston-Salem to Lake Norman?

It is an easy 50-mile drive on I-40 to I-77. It’s an easy day trip for mother/daughter, friends, relatives, church group, etc. You will enjoy great fellowship or team building and, of course, fabulous shopping! It is well worth the short trip!

Is transportation provided?

Tour de boutique is a self-guided tour, so you can shop at your own pace.

Will there be route options?

Yes! We will provide shoppers with several route options depending on which side of town they would like to start.

Do you have to visit the stores in a certain order?

No! You are welcome to go rogue and create your own route. Our routes are purely suggestions to give you some added efficiency.

How much does it cost?

$50!

What does the cost include?

Your $50 registration fee includes the LKN simple modern 40 oz Trek tumbler cup, a swag bag with some other goodies, coupons and even gift cards hidden inside! There will also be exclusive specials, giveaways and/or discounts at all participating boutiques, door prize tickets, and most importantly, a day full of fun and quality time with your girlfriends!

When will you release a list of participating stores?

Stay tuned to social media - @lknmagazine on Instagram and Facebook.

What time does it start?

Many stores adjust their hours to accommodate the Tour, although 9 a.m.6 p.m. is the typical time frame. Since it’s self-guided, you can shop at your own pace and spend 20 minutes in one store and an hour in another. We will be sure to communicate open and closing times of each boutique with participants before the event.

Are you required to visit all the stores?

No, it is not required, but the more stores you visit, the more chances you will have to win door prizes!! You can enter a drawing at every store that you visit, and we have a special GRAND PRIZE that you can only enter when you visit all of the participating stores.

Do people usually sign up with friends or individually?

BOTH! We have seen three generations sign up together (mother, daughter, granddaughter), we’ve seen groups of friends, co-workers, sisters, cousins, AND, absolutely, people can sign up individually. We know some people prefer shopping alone, and that is totally fine! We can assure you the stores will make you feel welcome all day long!

Should we mark our calendars now for the Fall Tour de Boutique in Winston-Salem?

Yes! The tentative date for the fall tour will be in October 7th, in Winston-Salem

Women’s Day

While we celebrate women every single day here at Forsyth Magazines, March 8th marks the official observance of International Women’s Day around the world!

Based on a shared purpose, trust, and appreciation for all, this initiative further supports so many areas of positive change for women of all ages. Locally, it’s a perfect day to shop at your favorite womanowned business (and spread the word!), raise money and awareness for women-focused charities in your community, or even surprise your best girlfriend with a bouquet of flowers (think purples, greens, and whites, symbolic of International Women’s Day.) Lifting each other lifts all women in some way!

As a United Nations-sanctioned global holiday, International Women’s Day honors the social, economic, cultural, and political successes of women – and also reminds us to keep the momentum going all year long. While celebrating in a fashion that fits your lifestyle – attending a rally, hosting a speaker, celebrating a milestone achievement, or simply gathering with girlfriends for much-needed bonding time – women have the opportunity to join a global experience on March 8th that embraces women’s achievements in every aspect of life.

Founded in 1911, International Women’s Day belongs to all women, and reminds us to recognize and respect our differences as one of the most positive elements of life. The United Nations began celebrating it as an official holiday on March 8, 1975, and since that time, the holiday has grown in spirit across the globe as an inclusive, diverse, and eclectic celebration!

In 2001 the platform Internationalwomensday.com was launched with the specific purpose of re-energizing this special day. The website offers useful resources, and adopts an annual campaign theme to provide a tone for International Women’s Day activities. The 2023 campaign theme – #EmbraceEquity – is designed to encourage us all to challenge instances of gender stereotyping and discrimination. From the simplest grassroots efforts to a more world-wide focus, options are limitless, and working in large numbers always fosters success and camaraderie.

The International Women’s Day (IWD) website also highlights a list of their current preferred charities, and fundraising continues to open up more widely to other registered charities around the world. International Women’s Day will find groups gathering worldwide to celebrate, rally, lobby for accelerated gender parity, share information, and raise funds for a number of like-minded charities doing good works behind the scenes. While you’re browsing the site, you’ll also find a searchable database of IWD events, and a directory of women-owned businesses.

The city of Winston-Salem will honor International Women’s Day with its first International Women’s Parade on Saturday, March 11, 2023, starting at 1:00 p.m. Come make history with The Legacy Foundation, who will sponsor the event. The parade will begin at Broad & 4th Street, and travel – rain or shine – through downtown Winston-Salem. For more information on the International Women’s Parade visit Legacyfoundationforwomen.com.

American MOVING AND HAULING

A Heart of Service for Employees, Customers, and Community

Setting your business apart from others in your industry can be accomplished in many ways. For Amy Jah, owner and manager of American Moving and Hauling, Inc., her philosophy of business begins with having a heart of service for her employees, extending to her customers, and using her business as an outreach to residents of the community in need of moving services.

SEEING A NEED AND FILLING IT

In 2005, Amy Jah opened American Moving and Hauling, Inc. Having worked as a manager of a storage company, she saw a need for reliable, conscientious, and detail-oriented moving and hauling services and she stepped up to fill that need.

“We are a woman owned company and I think that is important to know, because this is typically a male dominated industry. For us, being woman owned and operated means that we are great at communication and detail. We will keep you informed every step of the way and are always there if you need something. Currently, we have 32 employees, doing residential, commercial, long-distance up to 900 miles, as well as local moves. We also offer car transport, and packing and unpacking services.

A PEOPLE-FOCUSED BUSINESS PHILOSOPHY

When Amy started her business, at the young age of 23, she was focused on getting established and on the ‘business’ aspect of her new venture, but with time, Amy has realized the importance of what her employees mean to her and the business. “Our employees are dedicating portions of their lives to us by way of their dedication to work, and I think it is important to take care of our employees,” said Amy. “As we have gotten older, my husband and I have really seen

what our employees mean to us, and how we can help make their lives better is now at the center of what we do -- and has been for several years. We are at a point financially, where it is easier to help others’ needs. We are like family, and we try to take care of our own. We know in doing this, we create loyalty in our employees and because they feel valued and appreciated, and taken care of, they extend that care to our customers. Honestly, we give a lot of people a chance that other places won’t and I think that also brings a sense of loyalty to our brand and company. The biggest sense of pride I get is to see someone that really came from nothing grow into a skilled and reliable mover that is making a good income for themselves and his/her family. We are also offering a new scholarship program, with $2500 for an employee or dependent. They simply are required to show us they are enrolled in a secondary school, and write a brief essay on how the money would help in their educational journey,” Amy commented.

Outside of the business, Amy is focusing on helping others in the community in need of moving services. “This year, in particular, we have made a commitment to be more a part of our community. We partner with some local organizations in our community to provide free move outs for domestic violence survivors, as well as helping people get into permanent housing. We often get calls from customers who are elderly and have very limited financial resources and we will often offer free moving, because it is the right thing to do and it feels right to do that,” stated Amy.

American Moving and Hauling, Inc. is located at 535 E. Clemmonsville Road, Winston-Salem, NC. They offer moving, packing, cleaning, and storage solutions. Visit them online at AmericanMovingAndHauling. com. Call 336-765-3499 or email team@AmericanMovingAndHauling. com for a quote. ‘Like’ them on Facebook and follow them on Twitter.

Grace Ramsey | Abstract Expressionist & Mixed Media

This month’s featured artist, Grace Ramsey, steps out from traditional limitations of the canvas to tell stories from an aerial perspective mixed with her deep understanding of movement, line and shape to create artwork that brings its viewer along for the journey.

How would you describe your work?

I create works in abstract expressionism in mixed media. I prefer to use fast-drying materials like latex, acrylic, and gouache paints, along with charcoal, oil pastel, markers, and varying types of medium. I like to work at a large scale! My work places emphasis on gesture, color, and texture.

What influences your art most?

My time spent as a working circus artist, especially on the aerial hoop was a big influence. I was one of the pioneers of an apparatus called the Lollipop, which is a steel hoop mounted on a freestanding pole. Unlike the traditional aerial hoop where it moves with you, you move around the lollipop. It radically changed how I understood momentum, line, and how to approach a story with the limitation of it being on the floor. I think this is heavily represented in how broad and sweeping my lines are in my visual work. Whenever I see my work, I feel the same way I used to in the air.

My work’s also been influenced by my last summer in Moab, Utah - the colors, shapes, and textures of the area utterly blew my mind. You learn to break objects down to their basic shapes in your head, and the rock formations, epic cloudscapes, and winding Colorado River have no shortage of fascinating forms. I’m curious to know how North Carolina will inspire me!

How have you evolved, personally, as an artist?

When I started making art as a kid, I was very much in it for validation. It was something that got me positive attention in a world where I was relentlessly bullied. That desire flipped itself on its head when it came time to find my own voice. I was afraid to make anything that could be considered “bad” - whether it’s unskillful, pretentious, shallow, or just plain ugly.

That need to be validated bled into all areas of my life, and it wasn’t until 2021 that I had to face who I really was, and reclaim that person, along with every quirk and little love she has. After that, I had to make art; I had to express and share all the beauty I see in my world.

The difference is that now I make art not to make any specific point or message, I just put it all down because making art physically feels good, and thinking about it feels good. That detachment from the outcome has freed me to make art that I stand behind, and hopefully resonates with others, too!

How do you carve out time to be creative?

Honestly? I weigh the consequences and say, “Eh, there’s always coffee!” Then I end up making art well into the night until I can’t keep my eyes open. I go to work the next day exhausted but satisfied. Coffee is my most valuable collaborator. (My order is currently a grande caramel latte, hot, with whip, because why just be caffeinated when you can be embarrassingly sugar high, as well?).

What are you working on that excites you right now?

I’m working on applying for grants and exhibitions for a new series I’m hoping to make. I want to work on a large scale: ten 5x5’ canvases and five 7x7’ canvases. I’m also wildly inspired by light neutrals. So I want to explore limiting my color palette to just those warm gray and brown tones. I’m experimenting with adding stucco and clay to my works as well.

What is one piece of advice you’d like to share with fellow artists?

Get out and explore! Artistic movement, classes on storytelling, theatrical improv classesyour artistic voice doesn’t only exist in your head, but in your whole body. Movement artists are the masters of interpreting shapes and ideas. Talk about a limited palette - all they have is their bodies. They have no choice but to evoke what they see, breaking it down to its barest representation and convincing the audience of its believability. They don’t have the luxury of spelling out what their objective is, they have to detach themselves from what the audience takes from a performance.

Performers deal with embarrassing ourselves constantly, visual artists should explore that as well in order to create work that is shamelessly theirs.

Purpose Push:

Gender is Your Superpower

It’s a beautiful time to be a woman, but it always has been. Happy Women’s History Month! We’ve been making history since the beginning of time. From Michelle Obama to Harriet Tubman. Truthfully, we can take it all the way back to the first woman to grace the Earth, Eve. We’ve faced adversity and overcome it every time. From small family quarrels to large national and global issues, women have been the linchpin to a resolution. We don’t give up and we know how to persuade with grace. Did you know being a woman is a superpower?

God is purposeful with everything He creates and you being here and being a woman was no accident. Remember, He knows the end from the beginning and the role you play in the story of the human race.

Let’s go back to Eve. I wish more people would look at her in a different light. She messed up and allowed the serpent to deceive her and ate the forbidden fruit, but we all would have done the same. What really counts is that she did not let her mistake shape the rest of her story. In Genesis 3:15, God said her seed would crush the serpent’s head and that’s exactly what happened! Despite her setback and how it made her feel, she rose every day to strive closer to the promise of God. After being cursed with painful labor, she had numerous children. She is considered the mother of the human race. How many men do you think could have handled that?

Women have an amazing ability to handle multiple things, emotions, and people simultaneously and look graceful doing it. Eve managed differing personalities of a husband and multiple children, one of whom killed his brother (Genesis 4), while managing her own. That’s no easy task but for some reason, as the physically weaker vessel, God chose Eve to do it. God loves to defy the odds and what’s considered standard, and by giving women the supernatural ability to triumph over what our counterparts can’t, He affirms the realization that this world would crumble without the presence of women, but also vice versa.

God gave man and woman different roles but the same goal and the danger zone is when we try to do things that were meant for the other person to handle. We often see this in marriage (Ephesians 5:22-33) but I’m not talking about societal roles

Sheridan C. Watkins is a journalist and the owner of Perennial Peaces, a jewelry and gifts brand focused on transcending self-worth to all women. like cooking or bringing home the bacon. It’s important for us to study the Bible to understand how God wants us to serve one another, even for those who are not married. When you’re operating in your natural ability, God fills in the voids of everything you will need, thus making you a whole and groundbreaking woman.

So, how can we take full advantage of our superpower for the betterment of our lives and all those we come into contact with? Again, I will tell you to look at Eve’s life because the best thing she did was lean hard into Who creates and gives power. As a woman, you have access

to God’s plans and prayer is the way to receive it. Galatians 3:28 says, “There is neither Jew nor Greek, neither slave nor free, nor is there male and female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus,” so that means there is no human above or below you. And there is nothing stopping you from making history, too. The desires and plans you have to become a successful businesswoman come into fruition by being who you were created to be. As a woman and as an individual, you were fearfully and wonderfully made. Lean fully into your superpower and watch how effortlessly you soar. Beloved woman, I have faith in you.

From Winter to Spring: Make a Graceful Transition

Did you know that both spring and fall compete for the top spot in terms of seasonal preference? As a diehard “Fall Girl,” even I can’t resist the magical allure of spring – a season that captures the spirit of renewal and rebirth in every way. Here how you can make the most of the season ahead:

PACK AWAY WINTER

Take a fresh look at your home. Go room by room and identify those visual and tactile reminders of winter. Take the bathroom, for instance. The first thing I pack away is the cute hand soap dispenser, the one with the snowflakes and the words “Winter Bliss.” Some folks switch out their towels in favor of lighter shades and textures. Moving on to the bedroom, send that cozy winter bedding to the dry cleaners and opt now for a lighter look. I have two bedding ensembles that I switch out year after year. Doing so triggers my mind to be more alert to the season ahead. The same approach applies to all of your living spaces. Love candles? Now is the time to swap out those heavily scented winter candles in favor of springinspired scents.

ANTICIPATE AND ESTABLISH NEW ROUTINES

Lighter and warmer mornings, followed by later dusks are to be fully enjoyed, so take those extra hours of light to wake a tad bit earlier. In my book, they are not to be missed. If you found yourself slacking off on that daily walk routine, this is your season to get moving again. It is also perfect for ratcheting up those outdoor outings. You can

make it happen by proactively reaching out to friends to set up café dates or visits to parks or walking trails. You can take that idea a step further by planning a few outdoor day trips or vineyard visits. While spontaneity is great, adding something to the calendar may be just the push you need to make it happen.

REFRESH YOUR MEAL PLAN

Fall may be synonymous with harvest, but spring offers its own unique bounty. Get online or pull out your favorite cookbooks and focus on seasonal vegetables, salads and casseroles. Now is the best time of year to incorporate everything from asparagus and artichokes to rhubarb, ramps (aka spring onions), and more. You might even challenge yourself to try three unfamiliar vegetables with the idea of expanding your seasonal repertoire in a healthy way.

ATTEND TO YOUR GARDEN

If not in spring, then when? Use those extra hours of daylight to remove the vestiges of winter and to prepare your garden for the season ahead. In my case, that always means doing some reevaluating: What’s working? What’s not? What do I want to change, and how much time and effort am I honestly willing to put into my garden this year? The answers to these questions guide my next actions. Also remember to do an inventory of the tools and materials you have on hand and what you will need to restock. By doing so, you have a better chance of achieving your gardening goals while not breaking the bank by buying things you already have or won’t need. We know that, while Mother Nature always rules, we do play a part in the plan!

RESET YOUR OUTDOOR LIVING SPACE

This is the most delightful spring transition – at least in my book! Ask yourself what’s already working well in this space and then list the changes, additions, or deletions that will help create the experiences you want to have. Again, by taking a mindful approach early in the season, you are setting yourself up for spring success – so to speak! A few years ago, a green thumbed neighbor suggested that I bedeck my shady veranda with hearty, multi-colored impatiens. That idea worked so well that I have been including impatiens every season since. Another suggested a water feature. Voila! Gurgling water from a mounted fountain is music to my spring-attuned ears.

Now, take a step back and enjoy this magical season to the fullest…

The Barn on Country Club

A Coat of Paint Can Make All the Difference!

As the temperatures warm, and the new of spring time approaches, making some changes to your decor may be in your future. You might have an outdated piece of furniture or a piece that no longer fits your color scheme, or maybe those kitchen cabinets could use a little sprucing up. While you might be tempted to replace the items completely, painting furniture, cabinets, and decor is an easy way to give your pieces new life. If this piques your interest, you need to start with good paints and a bit of guidance. Renee Floyd, owner and manager of The Barn on Country Club in Winston-Salem, NC, and Debbie Gentry, former painting instructor, can get you on your way!

THE RIGHT PAINT MAKES ALL THE DIFFERENCE!

Debbie Gentry has painted lots of furniture over the years and has taught classes for Renee at The Barn on Country Club in the past, so she knows her paint. There are two she recommends to give your furniture, cabinets, and other surfaces the finish and look you want.

“I use two lines of paint in my projects: Farmhouse Paint Co. and Rethunk Junk by Laura; both are specifically made for furniture, cabinets and other surfaces like decor, fabric, glass, etc., and The Barn On Country Club is an Authorized Retailer for both. Both are high quality and are designed for upcycling furniture, cabinets and more, by giving them a fresh new look , maybe even a new color if you’re dealing with a previously painted piece. Some novice furniture painters use latex paint, which is designed for walls and not furniture. While it may save you money, the results are inferior compared to the high quality finish and durability of all the furniture painted and sold at The Barn. It’s important for DIYers to know this, too, because they invest money in the products and their time, all to end up with a project which does not wear well or look very professional if they used a cheaper paint not meant for furniture,” said Debbie.

FARMHOUSE PAINT

Farmhouse Paint is a line of acrylic, resin based paint, not chalk or latex, with no special prep solution needed - just clean and remove any dirt or grease before starting your project.

“Farmhouse Paint goes on smooth, is easy to apply with a quality brush; we use and recommend the Zibra brush line. FH paint is eco-friendly and cleans up easily with soap and water and there are no brush strokes, which sets FH apart from most other paint lines. No top coat is required, however if the piece

is heavily used, we recommend customers seal it with a sealer such as a clear polycrylic, usually in a matte or satin finish, since the paint itself provides a beautiful, creamy, soft finish. FH dries quickly and comes in a wide selection of gorgeous colors. It is very affordable because a little goes a long way and it is user friendly, which is good for DIYers, as well as more seasoned painters. The latest release is FH Evolution and it is a fabulous addition to the line, drying in one hour to the touch and for use within 24 hours,” Debbie commented.

RETHUNK JUNK BY LAURA

Rethunk Junk by Laura is also resin based paint that requires a prep solution, available in the line, to prepare your piece for proper paint adherence.

“Rethunk Junk by Laura requires a topcoat which is from the line and comes in many beautiful colors. Like FH Paint, a little goes a long way. A lot of novice painters try this brand and love it because it’s very forgiving when painting, so you don’t get those annoying brushstrokes. With this line, too, we recommend the Zibra brush. Neither FH Paint or Rethunk Junk by Laura are chalk, because resin is more durable than chalk paint. Since chalk paint requires waxing, if you decide to change the color, the wax has to be sanded off, which is not required with resin paints,” stated Debbie.

Both lines can be used to give other decor, like drawer hardware, fabric, lamp shades, candle stands, etc. an updated look as well.

The Barn on Country Club offers monthly classes with current paint instructor, Dionne Jenkins. If you have a group of friends who would like a special class, contact Renee to set those up. The Barn has a great upstairs area for classes and groups are welcome to bring their own refreshments. These classes are usually held on Sunday afternoons, range about 3 hours and cost $75,including your paint, all needed supplies, handouts, etc.

The Barn on Country Club is located at 4886 Country Club Road, Winston-Salem, NC. Hours of operation: Tues-Sat 10 AM- 6 PM; Sun 12-6PM. For more information, call 336-661-8400 or visit www. thebarnoncountryclub.com.

9 THINGS

to Include in Your March Budget

Did you know it is important to alter your budget based on the month? For example, maybe you add a little more in the expense category rather than savings for the month of December, or you figure you’ll spend more money during the summer months for things such as vacations.

There is no better time than the first day of the month to set your updated budget. Read below to see the 9 things you should include in your March budget.

St. Patrick’s Day: On March 17th, many people join in the green fun and celebrate the holiday just like the Irish do! According to research, 52% of Americans will spend an average of $37 per person on food, drinks, and more for their St. Patty’s Day events. If you plan on having a good time, add it into your budget.

Spring Break: Whether or not your kids’ Spring Break is in March or April, it is time to start planning and saving. Even if you don’t go on a trip, it is nice to have extra money for fun stay-cation activities. Also, if you need extra childcare during this time, you will need to factor out how much extra money you’ll need.

March Madness: For all of you basketball fans, March Madness can be as big as Christmas. Expenses, such as travel, game tickets, sportswear, and party supplies will get expensive and you want to make sure you have the money to cover it. (Also, you might want to pay attention to the higher cable bill, thanks to watching all those games.)

Summer Vacation and Camp Fees: Yes, I said it. We are in March and I’m already talking about summer. However, it is never too early to start saving and planning for the various activities your kids and family will take part in. Also, if your kids are attending summer camp or childcare, register as soon as possible and remember that with those registrations, come deposits or full payments.

Tax Season: April 15th will be here before you know it. When getting your taxes filed, always make sure to include any expenses or fees that may be involved.

Springtime Maintenance and Home Repairs: Now is the time for annual spring cleaning and that can mean making those long needed home repairs. Home maintenance can be either expensive or cheap. Do your research and determine if you need to hire a professional or can DIY a repair. However, you’ll need to include the expenses for both avenues.

Spring Consignment Sales: While you are doing your spring cleaning, get rid of things you don’t need anymore, such as clothes, shoes, and books. Then, sell them at consignment sales and consignment shops. This tip doesn’t take money out of your wallet – it will hopefully add some money to it!

Entertainment: As the weather gets nicer, more and more people spend time outdoors. Think about the outside activities you and your family will enjoy. Are you going to an amusement park? An outdoor movie? To save money, try looking for entertainment that is free or has a family deal package.

End of the School Year Expenses: Too early to talk about the end of the school year? Your budget will thank you for getting a head start on preparing for the many end of the school year expenses, such as teacher gifts, projects, and more. After all, May and June are only a few months away!

Don’t forget to add in the above expenses to your March budget. On March 31st, you’ll be glad you did and will hopefully have more money than you started the month with.

The 7 Types of Rest We All Need

It is no secret - we all need rest. Whether it is through relaxing, sleeping in, or practicing self-care, rest is beneficial to a person’s health. But, did you know there are different types of rest? Seven types to be exact.

In her TED Talk, Dr. Saundra Dalton-Smith, a board-certified internal medicine physician in Alabama, explains that a person needs to be rested physically, mentally, spiritually, emotionally, sensorily, socially, and creatively. Dr. DaltonSmith discovered these various types of rest after researching the reasons why her patients (and herself) were still tired after getting a good night’s sleep. She explains her findings in her book, Sacred Rest, published in 2017 and encourages creating a “rest revolution,” by focusing on all types of rest, rather than just sleep, and moving away from a burnout culture. To some people, this can be overwhelming, thinking about their normal schedule and the fact that they have to now get in multiple types of rest. The good news is that it doesn’t have to be overwhelming and it is easier than you think.

According to Dr. Dalton-Smith, the various versions of rest are all linked together and if you are needing one type, you are probably needing more than just that one. When considering what types of rest you may need, the first step is to always look at the descriptions and the ways to include them in your life.

PHYSICAL REST

This category includes, of course, sleep (which is considered to be passive physical rest) and active physical rest activities. During physical rest, a person is completing slow, easy, and peaceful exercises to help their body heal and lower their stress levels. Yoga, massages, stretching, and pilates are great examples of how to obtain physical rest. Walking is another option. It is suggested for a person to add some type of physical rest into their schedule at least every other day. This will help prevent swelling and body aches, which are key signs you are in need of this particular type of rest.

MENTAL REST

Do you have trouble concentrating or absorbing new information? Do you need coffee to get you through the day, because you are having difficulty sleeping at night? Mental rest is what you need to block out the stimuli coming into your brain. Scheduling breaks and time away from the stimuli throughout the day will be beneficial and give your mind a chance to reset. For example, moving away from your work and taking a short walk outside or just sitting outside in the sun. Journaling, making lists, and writing down your thoughts throughout the day is another opportunity to receive mental rest.

SPIRITUAL REST

According to Dr. Dalton-Smith in the article “What are the 7 Types of Rest? (Plus, The Best One for You),” she states that “someone lacking spiritual rest might have trouble feeling like what they do everyday matters”. This could come from a person searching for purpose, belonging, and community. To recharge spiritually, it is suggested that you find a strong community to guide you in finding understanding and relating to your own beliefs. Meditation, daily prayer, keeping a gratitude journal, and volunteering are also great practices.

SENSORY REST

I can relate to this type of rest. There are times when I have all my senses working with hearing information, trying to type, while reading on the computer. Sensory overload happens to the majority of us. Lights, noises, and more can cause us to be overwhelmed and can affect our feelings and personalities. To take a break, simply close your eyes for a minute, unplug your electronics, and remove yourself from the noises and lights for a moment. The key is to find a quiet spot to relax and step away from the world. One thing that helps me is driving home from work in silence. By doing so, I am able to regain my thoughts and be at peace for a moment.

EMOTIONAL REST

We all do it - we all tell others we are “okay” when in actuality we are not. We say “yes” to things when we really (and need) to say “no.” If this happens to you, you are in the market for some emotional rest. Getting fulfilled on your emotional rest can be tricky, because you are opening up yourself and possibly feeling vulnerable. Start by being honest and talking to someone you are comfortable with about what you are feeling and advocate for yourself. For this type of rest to be successful, you are encouraged to be authentic and cut back on pleasing people. In addition, fill your life with positive and supportive people, who you trust. Lastly, therapy is another wonderful option. The goal with emotional rest is to be able to let down your guard and truthfully answer the question “How are you?” depending on what you are really feeling.

CREATIVE REST

When you hear the word “creative,” you may associate it mostly with the arts and being artistic. However, for our version of rest, creativity is related to problem solving, critical thinking, and thinking outside of the ordinary, and we can oftentimes find ourselves stumped in creativity. There are two ways to recharge in creative rest. First, appreciate beauty and nature. Get outside and watch the colors of the sunset. Take in all of the colors around you and absorb the beauty of your surroundings. Second, enjoy the arts, whether it be music, dancing, painting, etc. Turn your workspace into something inspirational for you to be productive. Or take a moment and let your mind draw or write wherever it goes on paper. Lastly, grab challenges head on and don’t be afraid to make mistakes. When you find inspiration and motivation in your surroundings, you will regain your creativity.

SOCIAL REST

I am an introvert. I enjoy my time at home and by myself. This is a perfect example of social rest, that even extroverts can use every now and then. Prioritize your time with people you want to be around and ones that fulfill you. Also, don’t overcommit yourself and don’t be afraid to schedule some “me” time into the calendar.

As you can see, these different types of rest blend together. While getting creative rest, you can also be getting physical rest with a walk through the park to notice its beauty. A simple five minutes a day, focusing on the rest you need the most, can help lead you to a healthier, calmer, and less stressful life.

Styles for Home InteriorsTimeless

As I prepare to attend the spring High Point Furniture Market to purchase new inventory, I can’t help but reflect on our economy. We have been blessed and continue to be blessed. We go to educational classes and learn all that we can from vendors for their new products and concentrate on upcoming colors. As a business, we need to learn to change with our clientele.

We offer turnkey projects, meaning furnishing the homes with rugs, window treatments, lighting, furniture, bedding linens, wallpaper, and paint colors or whatever the client needs. Sometimes, they want a kitchen or bathroom remodeled as well. We have clients that leave everything behind and ask us to prepare their new home (whether remodeled or new) to move into a fully furnished home.

As a retail brick and mortar shoppe in Clemmons, which also serves as our design studio and kitchen/bath center, we meet with our customers to gather information. We design the space, create CADs to show the best possible layout, and turn-key finish the room or the house. We also help other contractors with their projects and select what they need to build a house and order lighting for contractors, as well. If we are working on a spec home, it is easy for us to plan the lighting along with the colors and finishes so they flow. We are also dealers for many manufacturers and order the furnishings that go into the spaces we are working on. We strive for superb customer service and make it our goal to make our customers happy.

Please come by our showroom to talk to one of our designers. Look around the retail space and ask questions. If you prefer to call us, 336 778 1030, we can make the appointment by phone.

for your FINDING a Mentor BUSINESS

As a business owner, juggling all the hats you must wear can be difficult. There are so many different aspects to running a business and so many decisions that you have to make on a day-to-day basis. One of the best moves you can make in your business is ensuring you have a mentor to help you navigate the rough waters of being a business owner. This could be through a paid program, a group of business besties, or someone close to you. We’re going to chat about how to find a mentor for your business and the benefits of having one.

WHERE TO FIND A MENTOR

If you don’t have a mentor in your personal life, several other options are available. One of the most accessible options is to join Facebook groups related to your field. Joining 3-5 groups can help you find one that aligns with your interests. You can also post in these groups looking for an accountability partner or business bestie. This can lead to many responses, so be prepared to choose the right fit for you. To keep track of conversations and shared information, you can communicate through platforms such as Slack, Trello, or Voxer. Building mutually supportive relationships with other business owners can help you stay motivated and on track.

Another option is to consider paid coaching programs. These can guide specific areas of your business. When choosing a coach, please look for someone who has already achieved what you want. For instance, if you’re going to build a successful brand photography career, please contact someone who has already done that (or reach out to me!)

WHY FIND A MENTOR

As I mentioned earlier, there are so many hats and decisions you have to make as a business owner. Having a mentor can help you see challenges from a different perspective. They can help you work through problems in your business that they have already solved. This can work with your business besties, but hiring a mentor can come in handy.

When you hire a mentor, they can help you avoid the pitfalls they experienced. This kind of experience is priceless. It will help you save money from expensive mistakes, navigate challenging conversations, and give you another pair of eyes on essential aspects of your business. There is a lot to be said about having someone in your corner!

Some of the reasons why you should consider having a mentor include the following:

• Experience and guidance: Mentors have more experience and can provide valuable advice on navigating the challenges of starting and running a business.

• Networking opportunities: Mentors can introduce you to new people and provide access to their professional network.

• Objectivity and fresh perspective: A mentor can provide an objective perspective on your business and help you see things from a fresh angle.

• Personal and professional growth: Mentors can help you identify personal and professional development areas and provide guidance on achieving your goals.

• Support and encouragement: Having a mentor can give you the support and encouragement you need to keep going when things get tough.

HOW TO FIND A MENTOR FOR YOUR BUSINESS

Having a mentor can significantly impact the success of your business. Whether you want to invest financially and hire a mentor, or if you want a group of business besties, there is no replacement for having assistance in your business. If you have any questions feel free to DM me on Instagram!

Known for respect, dependability, and always searching for cost-effective solutions, the experts at Kitchen TuneUp can even provide a “one-day tune up” – renewing wood cabinets by removing built-up dirt and grease – or a new paint job and fresh doors for your existing cabinets. But if you’re dreaming a bit bigger, talk to them about a complete kitchen re-do, including custom cabinets!

Creating an entirely new and fresh look for your kitchen can be an exciting project (and a fun one!) with the help of the company’s Virtual Kitchen Design Tool. You’ll see the stylish possibilities right before your eyes, and knowing you’re in expert hands makes a big project seem much less daunting.

“At the initial consultation we’re looking to get a feel for our clients and their lifestyle,” explains Peter. “We want to know who will be using the kitchen and how it will be used most often, and there’s a questionnaire we use to compile all that important information. For example, who in the family is the main food preparer? Is that person right- or left-handed? Tall or short? Is the kitchen used mostly for everyday meals, or more for entertaining a larger group? This provides the designer all they need to finish with a kitchen built specially for that person or family.”

While some styles of cabinets require a longer preparation time than others, he estimates generally a three to six week lead time for custom cabinets. Installation, depending on size and scope, could be anywhere from five to 10 working days.

“The design tool is great!” says Peter. “This is something a client can play with prior to even setting an appointment. It’s very user-friendly, and for folks who may feel a bit technically challenged, a tutorial is provided.”

Here’s how it works: A customer can choose a generic kitchen layout from several different choices, then select details such as door style, colors, and countertops. The tool updates the layout with each selection, so you see each change throughout the process in a 3D rendering.

“This is also something we could do together at our in-home appointment with the client,” says Peter. “We can do what makes the client feel most comfortable.”

And going the extra step, the Kitchen Tune-Up team is also well-versed in

accessories and organizers for your brand new custom cabinets, helping keep clutter to a minimum and efficiency at a maximum. Ask about options for roll-out trays, spice racks, roll-out waste and recycling containers, and super convenient drawer organizers to complete your wonderful new cooking and living space!

Kitchen Tune-Up is based in Clemmons, NC, and serves the Winston-Salem, High Point, and Greensboro areas, including Advance, Belews Creek, Clemmons, Colfax, Kernersville, Lewisville, Lexington, Oak Ridge, Pfafftown, Rural Hall, Stokesdale, and Walkertown. BLACKENED SALMON

For this month, I wanted to share a delicious healthy recipe that is on the weekly lineup every week in our house - Blackened Salmon. I’ve tried grilling salmon, smoking salmon, even baking in the oven and air frying but blackening it is by far the best tasting way in my opinion.

This isn’t really BBQ or grilling and can either be done on a cast iron skillet (or nonstick, stainless steel, whatever you prefer) or a griddle. I love cooking this recipe on my Blackstone Griddle. Any chance I get to cook outside and have less dishes to clean up inside after, is a win in my book. I’m able to blacken the salmon and cook veggies on the side all on one cooking tool and just have one thing to clean up afterwards.

For this recipe, I like getting a pretty large wild caught salmon filet but farm raised works fine too. In my opinion, wild caught tastes much better.

Serve the salmon with some white rice, veggie of choice and add more soy sauce, sriracha or some Japanese BBQ sauce to elevate the flavors even more. My favorite sauce for this meal is Bachans Hot & Spicy Japanese BBQ sauce (the regular Bachans is great too, and this sauce can be found at Costco and some other stores, such as Ace Hardware, Academy or local butcher shops).

BLACKENING SEASON INGREDIENTS

1 Tablespoon Smoked Paprika

1 teaspoon light brown sugar

1 teaspoon kosher salt

¾ Tablespoon garlic powder

½ teaspoon cayenne pepper

½ teaspoon dried thyme

½ teaspoon dried oregano

INSTRUCTIONS

1. Mix seasoning ingredients together in a small bowl.

2. Pat salmon dry with a paper towel, leave skin on.

3. Rub salmon down with some olive oil to help the seasoning stick.

4. Sprinkle the seasoning mixture all over the salmon filet evenly and pat it down nicely so the seasoning sticks.

5. Heat skillet/griddle to high heat - no cooking oil needed.

6. Once your cooking surface is nice and hot (a good way to confirm is to drop a tiny bit of water on and you want to see it dance around) place salmon skin side upand let cook for 3-4 minutes.

7. Flip salmon (skin side down) and cook for an additional 6-7 minutes or until your desired internal temperature is reached (I like pulling it around 130-135° internal) but it’s okay if you want to take it all the way up to 145° internal.

8. While I’m blackening the salmon I like to cook some diced up zucchini with some salt, pepper and soy sauce on the griddle.

ALWAYS REACHING OUT IN STYLE!

Connecting through fashion is one of the things women do best! Take a girlfriend shopping with you, find a few treasures, grab lunch, and that’s a nearly perfect day!

No one knows that better than savvy entrepreneur and owner Anitra Mitchell and her dynamite team at LoveWell Boutique in Winston-Salem. They offer carefully chosen apparel, jewelry, and shoes, in styles they know customers love, with a goal of empowering women in their everyday lives. Since 2012, the LoveWell ladies have also watched their loyal customers marry, have children, lose jobs, seek new careers, and weather so many of life’s storms. All those connections strengthen client relationships, and Anitra considers being part of those lives a pure joy!

“Being in our Oakwood Drive location for over 10 years has allowed for so many connections to take place within our walls,” Anitra says proudly. She and her staff like to think of the store as their home away from home, so when someone enters, they are greeted like they’ve come to visit a friend!

“The connection we make with our customers is what sets us apart,” says Anitra. “I often say you can buy a top anywhere, but our customers come here for so much more. We love to celebrate the women who take time out of their day to visit us, and offer special events to have more time to connect on a personal level.”

While some customers like to shop without interruption, others are excited to be treated as one of the girls! That’s where it’s important to gauge what makes the best shopping experience for each person. As part of that “homework” the LoveWell staff (Anitra, her husband and business partner, Brad, plus five full-time and two part-time team members) connect with each other through a monthly team building session with a certified therapist.

“We walk through communicating and connecting with each other,” says Anitra. “I

love seeing how it plays out in our daily lives. Our relationships play a big part in how we serve our customers.”

When 2020 changed retail life, Anitra knew it was time to meet her customers right where they were – and that was at home!

“We have always hosted exciting in-store events, so we brainstormed how to keep those connections strong while people were staying home,” she adds. “That meant it was time to take the store truly online.”

The boutique was able to connect with and serve so many more online customers, in addition to those slowly returning to the brick and mortar store. Among the staff’s favorite online happenings are the daily Live events –where customers see new arrivals in the store. They’ve done after-hours make-up tip events, celebrated birthdays with customers via Zoom, and Brad even hosted a few cooking shows! Building on those online connections is at the top of the list for 2023 – with more events planned than ever before.

“We love offering Live events on our free LoveWell Boutique app, on the website (www.lovewellboutique.com), Facebook, and Instagram,” says Anitra. “It’s allowed us to reach women from all over the country. Some of our best customers have never been to the store, but they show up regularly on Lives, they private message us, and we are able to connect with them in a way that is unique to this ever-changing world.”

And it’s not unusual for women to grab their friends and road trip to see what’s happening at LoveWell Boutique. After all, that’s what we women do!

Visit LoveWell Boutique at 110 Oakwood Drive, Suite D, in Winston-Salem, and immediately become part of the family. You can reach them at 336-893-6589, online at Lovewellboutique. com, via their free app by searching LoveWell Boutique in your app store, or on Facebook and Instagram. Boutique hours are Monday through Friday 10:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m., and Saturday 10:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m.

LISTENING to Hear the Real Message

Listening is one of the more important communication skills humans have, but it is not something that most of us do well. Our attention spans are declining by the day as there is so much “noise” in the world. We are moving at a breakneck speed and technology is always present to further distract us. In addition, we typically listen to respond, rather than listening to really listen. In other words, as the other person is talking, we are formulating our response in our heads which impacts our ability to listen well.

But there are so many benefits to listening well! It will help to:

• Improve your relationships

• Improve your ability to influence, persuade and negotiate

• Avoid conflict and misunderstandings

• Validate the other person and make them feel valued

This all sounds good. So, what do we need to do to do better? The answer is to practice empathetic listening. Empathetic listening involves a conscious effort to hear not only the words that another person is saying but, more importantly, to try to understand the complete message being sent. Simon Sinek says, “Hearing is listening to what is being said. Listening is hearing what isn’t said.” Even if you are doing a good job listening to the words the other person is communicating, there is much more to every message. You need to tune into body language, eye contact, tone, and more to attend to the real message.

Below are some steps that you can take to be a better listener and practice empathetic listening based on the LISTEN acronym. Clever, right? I must admit that I didn’t come up with it totally on my own. I borrowed it and adapted it from an episode of Pastor Rick Warren’s Daily Hope podcast.

LLOOK & LISTEN WITH YOUR BODY LANGUAGE

Use your eye contact, body language, and gestures to convey your attention.

• Make eye contact – aim for 60-70% of the time.

• Nod occasionally.

• Smile and use other facial expressions.

• Note your posture and make sure it is open and inviting.

• Encourage the speaker to continue with small verbal comments like yes, and uh huh.

• Make notes if appropriate.

IINVEST IN THE INTERACTION

Give the speaker your undivided attention and focus on receiving the intended message.

• Put aside distracting thoughts.

• Don’t mentally prepare a rebuttal.

• Avoid being distracted by environmental factors (i.e., side conversations, your phone).

• Avoid multitasking.

• Avoid interrupting.

SSHARE THEIR FEELINGS, NOT YOUR SOLUTION

As a listener, your role is to understand what is being said, not to impose your solution.

• Summarize the speaker’s comments and feelings as you understand them.

• Resist the urge to share your solution.

• Utilize empathy statements like “I understand how you feel. I’d feel that way, too, in your situation.”

TTUNE INTO ANY UNDERLYING FEELINGS OR ISSUES

Tune into their body language/tone and try to identify if there are underlying issues that aren’t readily apparent through what they are saying verbally.

EENGAGE THE SPEAKER WITH OPEN-ENDED QUESTIONS

Ask open-ended follow-up questions to clarify, show interest, and increase your understanding.

N NEVER JUDGE UNTIL YOU HAVE ALL THE INFORMATION

Don’t jump to conclusions or make judgments until you have listened to the full message.

it a try to elevate your relationships and performance!

Living History Writ Large :

If you are craving a great place to spend an afternoon, where beauty, history and an opportunity to broaden one’s education conjoin, make sure to pay a visit to Bethabara (located at 2147 Bethabara Road), the site of the first Moravian settlement in North Carolina. Located just north of present day Winston-Salem, on November 17, 1753, Bethabara (from the Hebrew, meaning “House of Passage”) was founded by German-speaking Moravians from Pennsylvania at the behest of the Moravian Church. The idea was to lay ground for an economic venture which imagined a place where both religion and profit might successfully meet in the middle. This first European settlement in the North Carolina Piedmont made its home on land that the Moravian Church had purchased from Lord Granville, an area known as Wachovia.

Bethabara was effectively the first of three settlements in Wachovia, with two others – Bethania and Salem – following in future succession. The group of 15 Moravian men were sent down the Great Wagon Road with high hopes, united in their commonly and deeply held religious convictions, to develop a community which would thrive. From the far reaches of Pennsylvania, they counted among themselves a doctor, farmers and various types of tradesmen whose skills, together, might ensure the successful development of a community. In the beginning they lived in a small abandoned cabin located in the northwest part of the 99,000-acre tract of Wachovia, surrounded by indigenous peoples along with ever-present wildlife which both often presented possible danger. The women folk would arrive sometime later and families would form.

Although Bethabara was originally only meant to be a temporary settlement to create a foothold in the Piedmont of North Carolina for the Moravians, it ultimately became an important economic center on the North Carolina frontier. According to the Historic Bethabara Park website, as the population grew and settlers from other regions arrived, “Several money-making ventures were attempted … from growing silkworms (silk cloth) to grapes (wine) but none were successful. Bethabara became a profitable venture when the town began taking part in the fur trade, purchasing furs from trappers in exchange for goods made by Bethabara tradesmen.” Ultimately, furs would then make their way to the port cities of Wilmington, North Carolina, and Charleston, South Carolina, where a handsome profit was turned for the Moravians.

After the French and Indian War in 1754, church leaders, apparently happy with the apparent prosperity of its Bethabara “boomtown,” sent instructions to the community to begin construction of a new entity, to be called Salem, in the center of the Wachovia tract. By 1820 most of the buildings in Bethabara and its inhabitants were gone, having moved on to Salem and elsewhere. The first Moravian settlement in North Carolina had ended and it was not until 1856, when the Church finally relinquished all governance of the larger municipality, that it became secular, although it continued to bask in its former historical glory and long-held traditions.

In Bethabara, you have the wistful feeling of nostalgically stepping back in time. One of its real beauties is the fact that it is a veritable living history museum. On its grounds you can enjoy so many things – extensive walking trails, activities like birding or kite flying, having picnics or simply taking photographs – all under the backdrop of a history which keeps that focus in clear and resilient view. Today historic Bethabara Park and its caretakers lovingly preserve the legacy and heritage of the “Old Town.” Importantly, in 1999 it was designated a National Historic landmark, thus elevating it to greater public recognition which came to include the awareness of its gorgeous 183-acres of wildlife preserve, wetlands and expansive parks. Also included in this historical gem are what remains of the original village, such as the excavated foundations of the original buildings, the restored Gemeinhaus ( the oldest Moravian Church in North Carolina) and colonial gardens.

Be sure to check out the Visitor Center (open in April), the Palisade Fort, which was built in 1756, the 1782 Potters’ House, 1803 Brewer’s House, Krause-Butner Pottery-Dye Shop and the 1816 Log House. Additionally, there are often free demonstrations involving blacksmithing, pottery, colonial medicine, woodworking, textiles, and even about Moravian star ornaments. There are frequent festivals (like the Apple Festival and Scottish Highlands) and historic reenactments. Walking the grounds of the park, you can almost envision how in June 1771, Governor William Tryon encamped his army nearby after his victory over the Regulators at the Battle of Alamance or how during the Revolutionary War in February 1781, Lord Cornwallis marched his English battalions through Bethabara. One “feels” the omnipresent history in the Park which will surely touch your heart and soul.

HOW TO USE YOUR MENSTRUAL CYCLE AS A SUPERPOWER, PART 2

Welcome to “Part 2 of How To Use Your Menstrual Cycle As Your Superpower”!

Last month, we talked about the hormonal symphony of key sex hormones: estrogen, testosterone, and progesterone. This month, we’re going to take a deeper dive on ways that take advantage of these hormones through diet and exercise as they wax and wane throughout the month! Ladies that don’t have a cycle, please read on. You can do this, too!

Just a quick reminder your menstrual cycle is the length of time between the first day of bleeding to the day before your next bleed. Most cycles are anywhere from 26-33 days. You can track your cycle by using an app like Clue.

Week 1, The Bleed Week

This week, your body is literally shedding an organ, the endometrium lining. All hormones are low. This is a great week to give a longer fast a try. You typically aren’t as hungry. Following a lower carb, higher protein and fat diet is doable this week.

Walking more the first couple of days of your period can be soothing and help with aches and cramps. As the week progresses and estrogen rises, you can incorporate resistance training at 8-12 repetitions.

After your bleeding ends, you will have a few “dry days”…where you don’t have any cervical mucus (we’re getting into the nitty gritty here).

Week 2, Testosterone Rises

Testosterone and estrogen are rising; you can lower the fat and increase the carbs keeping protein high. This is the week where you are moving into ovulation. Fast for no more than 12-14 hours so it doesn’t impact ovulation. Take advantage of the increase in testosterone and hit some new PRs…aka LIFT HEAVY. The goal is to lift 5-8 reps as heavy as you can. It is not an ideal time to perform HIIT exercise because as estrogen rises, ligaments become lax causing a greater propensity for injury doing those box jumps.

At the beginning of this week, cervical mucus gets creamy, opaque and tacky. Towards the end of the week, as ovulation approaches, cervical mucus is very wet, sticky and fluid, similar to raw egg whites. As this increases, ovulation is right around the corner.

Week 3, Ovulation and Progesterone

Ovulation occurs and either a sperm implants the egg or your period is a couple of weeks away. Due to estrogen taking the back seat to progesterone, this is a great time to go back to your bleed week’s diet: increasing healthy fats, keeping protein high, and lowering carbohydrates. Incorporate resistant starches like cold rice, cold potatoes, and green bananas to your diet this week (you can cool and reheat to get the same benefit). The carbohydrates in these resistant starches aren’t absorbed as much because they turn into delicious food for our good gut bacteria. You will notice adding these in your diet will help with hunger and cravings!

A little about me:

WHO AM I?

Hi! My name is Jane Daniel. I am a proud mom to three healthy boys, a lover of the great outdoors, a forever student, health nut, exercise enthusiast and native of the Triad. I am also a graduate of The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

It is ok to increase the fast some this week, you could try a 16-18 hour fast if you choose. Moderate lifting in the 8-12 range is ideal this week.

Cervical mucus is back to being creamy and tacky.

Week 4, Where’s the Chocolate?

You are at the week before your period and are experiencing more hunger and cravings. Don’t fight it! Consume 10-20% more calories (depending on activity level) and eat higher protein and carbs. Make sure to eat some protein at each meal; this will help with satiety. Continue to consume your resistant starches to quell hunger. Don’t try to push a fast this week; go for a 10-12 hour fast at the most.

This week, increase the reps in the 15-20 range at 4 sets. You will have a few “dry” days (no cervical mucus) in the days leading up to your period.

Cardio

I didn’t mention cardio these four weeks, I recommend doing steady-state cardio where your heart rate is in Zone 2. If you don’t have a monitor, a friend on the phone could tell that you are working out but you are still able to have a conversation. Short-duration HIIT is also ok in all weeks except week 2.

Don’t Have a Menstrual Cycle? No Problem!

If you don’t have a menstrual cycle, that’s ok! Let the lunar cycle be your guide! Follow the nutrition and exercise recommendations above with the moon!

Week 1 New Moon

Week 2 Waxing Moon

Week 3 Full Moon

Week 4 Waning Moon

Now you can see how you can optimize health by working with your menstrual cycle. The next time “Aunt Flo” comes to town, don’t curse her…thank her for your beautiful superpower!

Making Dollars, Making $ense

Operation Dream Coach

With the first quarter of 2023 coming to a close, our team has had the opportunity to review with the many investors we work with at Marzano Capital Group. The depth of our conversations has been robust, in light of a difficult year in both stocks and bonds. We view those conversations as a privilege. I, along with the rest of our team members, have been asked a very similar question from prospective clients that reaffirmed the continued need to educate on how our firm strives to add value. “What makes your firm different?” We enjoy being asked this because we feel strongly about our process. To answer that question, it would be appropriate to focus on three high level themes that we feel help to answer this question more clearly.

1. DREAM COACHING

Understanding what you envision your ideal life being like is a huge part of how we can add value. We sit across the desk from many clients that have never had a discussion surrounding their life goals. Retirement has to be a part of it, but living the type of lifestyle you want NOW can be an even larger part for some. Having these open architecture conversations is a very enjoyable part of our job and helps better create a roadmap for your situation!

2. THREE CS OF COMMUNICATION

Clear, Consistent and Concise provide the foundation of our communication goal with clients. We strive very hard to make sure investors understand the nature of our investment management process. A large part of this is making sure we communicate clearly and proactively.

3. YOUR GO-TO CALL

Most of our clients lean on us for more than just investment management. We pride ourselves on making sure we connect you with the right folks. We will do everything we can on our end to make sure you’re as financially bulletproof as possible, but if you need a loan/line of credit, tax planning, estate planning, etc., we can make sure to point you in the right direction and be involved in these meetings to advocate on your behalf if you would like.

Being independent and working for our clients is our number one priority. We will do our best to make sure you can feel this during our discussions and planning sessions. We look forward to continuing to serve our current clients and we welcome the same for prospective clients. Please feel free to reach out to us anytime if we can be of assistance!

On the Road Again: South

Day 1: Settle into Charleston

North Carolina natives have an easy day-drive to the stunning city of Charleston, but those living outside of driving distance can fly into Charleston International Airport (CHS). If you’re flying, don’t skip the rental car, even though there’s plenty to do and countless options for accommodations in the Downtown Historic District within walking distance. Much of South Carolina’s coastal beauty is within a short drive of the city, but keep in mind that the large majority of downtown hotels charge anywhere from $30 to $50 per day (or night) for parking, with valet frequently being the only option offered. Although staying downtown brings hefty parking fees, the walkability of staying downtown and the proximity to historical sites and top-notch dining far outweigh the strain on your wallet.

Day 2: Explore the Historic District

Downtown Charleston combines the modern southern cuisine and accommodations north of Marion Square with the colonial beauty, walkable waterfront parks, and fresh seafood in the south. Take a stroll through the historic streets to see the picturesque Rainbow Row, a group of 13 Georgianstyle homes from the 1700s and 1800s in postcardworthy pastel colors. Tour the Old Exchange & Provost Dungeon, cool off at Joe Riley Waterfront Park, or purchase a ferry ticket to access Fort Sumter National Monument for a history lesson on the Civil War. There is no shortage of southern cuisine in the city for your chance to dine on some of the south’s best shrimp and grits, she-crab soup, and fried green tomatoes.

Day 3: Isle of Palms

On a warm, sunny day, drive 25 minutes east from Charleston to spend a day on the beautiful Isle of Palms Beach. In the summer, weekends can be particularly crowded as many Charleston locals escape the city to spend a day in the sand. There are paid parking lots nearby, but arrive early to secure a space in the peak season. Another nearby option for beachgoers is Folly Beach on Folly Island, only 20 minutes south of Charleston with a bustling pier and local seafood haunts.

Day 4: Murrells Inlet & Huntington Beach State Park

Spend your fourth day along coastal South Carolina by spotting wildlife and walking along the marshes of Murrells Inlet. Although Huntington Beach State Park is a lengthy 90-minute drive north of Charleston, it’s a must-see for naturelovers and those seeking a less crowded beach experience for an affordable daily access fee. Depending on the time of day, Huntington Beach State Park is a prime location for alligator sightings, turtles, coastal birds, and a less-frequented beach. Many visitors reserve campsites months in advance to spend time at Huntington Beach State Park (my parents do this annually), with delicious eateries such as Dead Dog Saloon and River City Cafe nearby in marshy Murrells Inlet.

Day 5: Magnolia Plantation and Gardens

Take in more of Charleston’s natural beauty by visiting a slice of pre-Revolutionary War history at Magnolia Plantation and Gardens. An inland family-friendly activity, Magnolia Plantation and Gardens is reportedly Charleston’s most visited plantation, with tram and boat rides, a historic garden walk, a zoo and nature center, a charming cafe, and historical tours of the grounds, such as the “From Slavery to Freedom’’ tour of former slave dwellings that are now dedicated to educating visitors on African-American history. Although all tickets must be purchased onsite, prices are affordable and more information can be found at www.magnoliaplantation.com.

Day 6: Edisto Beach State Park

Another must-see state park is Edisto Beach State Park, only an hour south of the city center. One of the most popular attractions at Edisto is the beautiful Botany Bay Heritage Preserve. Known for its wetlands and Driftwood Beach, Edisto’s coastal beauty is a photographer’s dream. Search for sea turtles or walk through acres of driftwood along the beach to collect seashells. Another popular camping spot, Edisto Beach State Park carries only a fraction of the crowds that Folly Beach and Isle of Palms Beach inherit, with a more pristine, untouched feel to its stretches of sand and wetlands. Close to the Welcome Center are also a few dining options, such as SeaCow Eatery serving breakfast, lunch, and dinner.

Day 7: Say Goodbye

The beauty of a getaway within driving distance is the freedom you have on your last day to depart at your leisure. Spend a few hours eating a nice breakfast before driving home, or spend even longer on a local beach as you head out. I highly suggest that those flying out of CHS find the time to squeeze in one last house-made biscuit from one of the many breakfast spots in downtown before heading to the airport.

Looking for a southern, warm-weather getaway without the hustle and bustle of Myrtle Beach resorts? Here’s how to spend seven days along the coast of the Palmetto State outside of busy (yet beloved) Myrtle Beach.

Steppin’ Out for Hearts!

Get your ball gowns and tuxedos ready for a night on the town! Mark your calendars for the American Heart Association’s 2023 Triad Heart Ball on Friday, April 21 at Legacy Stables and Events in Winston-Salem. The Heart Ball celebrates the American Heart Association’s collective success in driving change, funding science and encouraging behaviors that improve heart health in our community. The event includes a survivor celebration, silent and live auctions, a gourmet dinner, acoustic guitar by Kevin Beck, and live music with dancing courtesy of Hot Sauce.

But it’s not just about the fun, it’s about raising vital funding to benefit heart disease and stroke research and community impact programs focusing on prevention of cardiovascular disease. Heart disease and stroke currently claim more lives than all forms of cancer and chronic lower respiratory disease combined.

Since 1949, the American Heart Association has funded more than $5 billion in research and currently funds more than 1,600 scientists across the United States. In the Triad, the American Heart Association is currently funding nearly $2.8 million in research grants at North Carolina A&T State University, High Point University, and Wake Forest University’s School of Medicine. The next big discovery for heart disease and stroke could come right from our own backyard!

The American Heart Association’s mission is to be a relentless force for a world of longer, healthier lives. With help from supporters, this impact is being felt in Triad neighborhoods through nearly $700,000 in community impact programs focused on nutrition education, hypertension management, and maternal health.

Chaired by Anita Prendergast, CEO of the Novant Health Rehabilitation Hospital, an affiliate of Encompass Health, the 2023 Triad Heart Ball and the Heart of the Triad initiative is focusing on stroke and prevention for this year’s program accompanied by a traveling F.A.S.T. display sharing stroke warning signs.

“Like many individuals across the country, I have personally experienced how cardiovascular disease can impact a family,” said Anita. “In addition, our team at Encompass Health sees the devastating effects of stroke every day in our community through the services we provide at our rehabilitation hospital. Encouraging all families to learn the F.A.S.T. warning signs of a stroke is critical to identifying a stroke quickly, leading to the best possible treatment options and outcomes for patients. I am honored to help lead this effort in the Triad.”

As part of the Novant Health Rehabilitation Platform Sponsorship and in an effort to increase awareness of the warning signs of stroke, large F.A.S.T. letters are part of a traveling display throughout Triad businesses and organizations this year. “F” stands for face drooping. “A” stands for arm weakness. “S” stands for speech difficulty. “T” stands for time to call 9-1-1. If a person shows any of the symptoms, even if their symptoms go away, 9-1-1 should be called and the person should get to a hospital immediately. According to the American Heart Association, every 40 seconds, someone in the U.S. has a stroke. The faster stroke is treated, the more likely the patient is to recover.

The good news is that heart attack and stroke-related events can be largely preventable with education and lifestyle changes, such as knowing your vital health numbers, moving more, eating smarter and managing vital health numbers including blood pressure, cholesterol, and blood sugar. For more information on the risk factors for heart disease and stroke, visit www. heart.org/lifes8.

The Triad Heart Ball is proudly sponsored by Life is Why Sponsor, Novant Health, and Platform Sponsor, Novant Health Rehabilitation Hospital, an affiliate of Encompass Health.

Tickets are on sale now at TriadHeartBall.Heart.org. For event questions, contact TriadNC@heart.org.

Spring is a season of fresh green growth. After a long season of hibernation, taking shelter from the cold, we reawaken and reemerge. Isaiah 44:4

They will spring up like grass in a meadow, like poplar trees by flowing streams.

James 5:7

Be patient, then, brothers and sisters, until the Lord’s coming. See how the farmer waits for the land to yield its valuable crop, patiently waiting for the autumn and spring rains.

Job 29:23

They waited for me as for showers and drank in my words as the spring rain.

“Beautiful Spring” – Lyrics by Susan and Hans

Birds emerge from a sea of green

As I stand outside painting

Many colors and luminous dreams

No more cold days, no more waiting.

Sometimes I feel like I can fly

Beautiful spring and sunny skies.

Sometimes I cry but don’t know why Beautiful spring and clear blue skies.

Redbud trees and daffodils

Little white clouds floating by. Tears of happiness fall without a sound

Are they yours or are they mine?

Sometimes I feel like I can fly

Beautiful spring and sunny skies.

Sometimes I cry, but don’t know why Beautiful spring and clear blue skies.

After transcending out of winter’s icy grip and many months of crippling cold, moody gray skies turn an optimistic blue as the sun’s rays shine through.

Wings spread, taking flight, our spirits set free as we soar through the sky. Songbirds grace our ears melodically, synchronizing and harmonizing among the symphony of nature. Crickets chime in, joining nature’s chorus in a string section of joyous sounds. The spring season embraces our ears. The silence of winter is over and spring lives on. From dusk to dawn, a glorious sunrise spreads across the horizon reminding us of the continuity of life and beauty of eternity that cannot be defined.

The “greening” of the trees is almost imperceptible. Hints of green color transform and burst into a glorious canopy of green leaves. New life is bursting out. Soon we’ll be tilling the soil. We’ll gather watering cans and soaker hoses in a cyclical journey to nurture a vibrant garden, thriving and growing.

With the dawning of spring, we celebrate the grace and triumph of a brandnew fresh day, a new season, and a new chapter in the book of our lives.

Uncover the Magic of Your Message: How to DIY a Brand Messaging Audit

We’ve all heard at least one story about a Hollywood celebrity meeting gone wrong. Your cousin or a colleague shares that they had the opportunity to meet “so-and-so” years back and quickly realized that they’re not at all how they seem on screen. What a let down, right? And yet, the expansive digital footprint small businesses and larger brands have nowadays opens up the opportunity for that exact encounter with future customers.

When you create a blog post or caption, send an email, or draft your service guide, are you homing in on what your audience really wants and needs to hear from your brand to help them know you’re the one for them? Imagine you were suddenly sitting across from your ideal client in person. What would happen when you meet or share a coffee over conversation? Would they feel like they already knew you? Would the excitement over what you could do for them rise or fall? Would there be some confusion or even disappointment in who you are in real life versus online?

STRIVE FOR THE SAME LEVEL OF CONNECTION ONLINE AND OFFLINE.

The truth is some businesses misrepresent themselves in their messaging, leaving opportunities on the table, both positive and negative ones. This month, say goodbye to watered down messaging and hello to powerful prose that gets results for your business by completing your own brand audit! Here are three important steps to review the message you’re sharing across your business to ensure you’re showing up in the best way possible to attract customers who can’t get enough of what you have to offer them.

#1 SCHEDULE YOUR BRAND AUDIT

Your messaging gives you the opportunity to help your audience overcome their struggle and achieve their desire with your offering. Creating time for a brand audit isn’t a luxury but a priority in your business. Carve out one hour on your calendar to reserve with the goal of reviewing key marketing elements and content creation. This will help you cohesively see what your brand voice and messaging really looks like to your customer and begin to understand where there is the biggest opportunity to evolve.

Review the list below for examples of your existing messaging:

Mission Statement Brand Statement

#2 KNOW WHAT YOU’RE LOOKING FOR

Consult the building blocks of your brand to make sure your messaging stays aligned with who you really are. Perhaps dust off your business plan to review your initial goals and key messaging to see if you’ve since evolved or find yourself wanting to use it as a compass to get back to the start. Home in on your brand voice and the way you’re communicating your message. Does it sound like me and the brand I’m building? Does it sound a bit too generic? You want to be easily recognizable, not only visually but the way you speak to your audience.

#3 PRIORITIZE STANDING OUT

It’s too easy to let what other brands are doing influence our own. Your competitive edge doesn’t come from something as simple as your pricing, but your messaging. (What you might be missing in your message could reflect what’s missing in your revenue.) Create cohesive opportunities to stand out by encouraging your customer, educating them on something they care about, and providing your unique selling points. If you’re unsure of how to begin including these types of highlights within your messaging, simply ask yourself the following questions:

1. What is your area of expertise and your experience in?

2. What are you passionate about and love to talk about?

3. What things does your ideal audience want to learn/need to hear?

Your messaging should be serving your highest potential as a business. Don’t overcomplicate things. Keep your message focused on the heart of your unique value and what you wish every customer knew about your business, and that will guide you.

HUSTLE & HEART CHALLENGE

This month, take time to schedule your own brand audit and ask yourself, “What key changes can I incorporate to add magic to my messaging?” Choose 3-5 items from the list included in this month’s column to review for opportunities to speak to your audience in a way that highlights your unique selling points and values.

SPRING CLEANING: WARDROBE EDITION (+10 Step Checklist to Simplify the Process)

Did you know that clothing is at the root of most household organizationrelated stress for women?

Each year around this time, there is a casual reminder fluttering through conversations and social media content highlighting “spring cleaning” with utter importance and yet our closets and dressers remain in the shadows. Certainly the overall cleanliness of these spaces isn’t overlooked, but the truth is, a wardrobe clean out is simply going to make the biggest impact of the season and here’s why.

IT’S NOT YOU, IT’S YOUR CLOTHES.

The stress that comes from an untidy closet or overflowing dresser drawer correlates to far more than a lazy housekeeper. In fact, a wardrobe clean out will allow you to create the lifestyle you’re looking for and amplify how you want to show up each day. Afterall, you want each piece you own staring back at you to offer the confidence and comfort you desire. Whether you’ve experienced significant body changes, changed up careers or lifestyle, moved to a new climate or are just less than thrilled with the lack of spark your clothing provides, you owe it to yourself to pick out the pieces that no longer serve you. Once you show them the door, you can prioritize the pieces you love and organize your space giving you better access to your clothing and a healthier mindset around them.

“LESS IS MORE.” TIME TO PURGE.

While spring cleaning your home it’s simple to remove clutter and send things soaring to the trash or donation bins in an effort to have a tidier home. When it comes to your wardrobe, it usually isn’t as easy, as this task brings both excitement and overwhelm. The truth is, the saying “less is more” will always ring true when it comes to a well curated wardrobe. The desire you have to better organize your drawers and closet space will absolutely materialize as you begin purging. Not only the physical space becomes more accessible but the mental space frees up as well. Remember, any form of purging physical items can bring up a lot of emotions and narratives. Be prepared to work through some mindset shifts that may come up.

FASHION RULES YOUR MAMA MISSED.

Remember, classics over trends always - unless that trend makes you feel like a million bucks. If you haven’t worn it in six months, you’re never going to. Just because it was expensive doesn’t mean it’s worth keeping.

Once you begin sorting through your items you may begin to question “Does it stay or does it go?” Start with things you dislike, don’t fit into and simply don’t feel right whenever you try them on. If an item puts up a fight to stay, ask yourself “When was the last time I wore this and felt good?” If you can’t decide on storing pieces that no longer fit, just remember that clothing is meant to fit our bodies, not the other way around.

MATCH YOUR CLOTHING TO YOUR CLOSET SPACE. A missed step in the purchasing process is the consumer often forgetting about their access to organization once they get their purchases home. Think about the size of your closet, dresser or dressing room when purchasing or accepting new clothing and accessories throughout the year. How do you intend to store these items? Is there space currently without minimizing what you already own? As you perform a closet clean out, ask yourself these same questions to make sure what you keep will fit in a way that creates an easy to go through space, not one that’s cluttered and stress inducing to keep up with.

YOUR PERSONAL WARDROBE AUDIT CHECKLIST. Eliminate overwhelm by reducing what feels like a big project into bite size tasks by reviewing one section of your wardrobe at a time by following the below list.

Intimates, Hosiery & Lingerie

Pajamas & Bathrobes

T-shirts & Basics

Blouses & Tops

Skirts and Bottoms

Denim

Sweaters & Cold Weather Wear

Dresses & Suiting

Outerwear

Shoes

Handbags

Accessories

Cleaning out your wardrobe this spring is not only a way to provide a sense of freshness into your home, but a sense of freedom over the items and spaces in your life. Start small and by the end you’ll be so grateful you prioritized this important part of your home.

The Real Deal with Candice Deal SORE MUSCLES - TAPE AWAY YOUR PAIN

You have probably seen KT Tape, a brand of kinesiology tape in your local pharmacy, or maybe you have seen it on numerous athletes on your television. It’s widely used in rehabilitation and physical therapy and is starting to be studied even more extensively than it has been in the past. It has even made its way into the animal therapy world since the benefits are just as grand for the four-legged creatures as it is for the two-legged!

Kinesiology, by definition, is the study of the body’s movement. Kinesiology tape was designed to move with the body, by providing a flexible tape with a good amount of stretch. This makes it quite different from sports tape that is very structured, without give, and likely used in cases when you do not want to allow movement of a joint.

Chiropractor Dr. Kenzo Kase developed kinesiology tape in 1973. Dr. Kase was treating arthritic patients and developed the tape so that the patients could extend the lasting benefits of better mobility and reduced pain after leaving his office for a session. He knew that the existing sport tapes wouldn’t be right for the job as they weren’t able to provide the mobility he knew was necessary for the patients to remain pain free.

Kinesiology tape was developed to mimic skin and works by application directly to the skin or fascia, which the body has designed with pain receptors. When the tape is applied it immediately works with the fascia to gently lift the layers. This creates a host of reactions in the body. When the fascia is lifted, your circulation immediately increases in the area the tape is applied and the surrounding areas. Blood flow increases due to the additional space. Experts say this single function of the tape can increase healing time as new, fresh blood and oxygen circulate to any area of damage or injury, and inflammation is reduced. The lifting effect of the skin allows any muscle constriction to find room

to expand. Taping is a fantastic method for helping a sore, overused muscle heal and enables healthy muscles to perform even better, which is why many athletes may be sporting the tape without any injury at all. Apply the tape to any bruise and watch the skin where the tape is applied; the bruise under the tape will usually fade in that area faster than the surrounding areas.

Kinesiology tape can be applied in many different patterns and shapes depending on what area of the body you want to target and your overall goal. Due to the cotton blends and flexibility of the tape, you can cut and trim the tape without reducing its effectiveness. Some patterns of application can provide support to a joint or muscle, while other patterns are focused on reducing pain, or edema in specific areas. Kinesiology tape is beneficial when we need to tap in our lymphatic system. Breast cancer patients have been sent home with tape patterns to help reduce their lymphedemas. Estheticians are starting to use tape on the face to reduce wrinkles and fluid retention. For this application, a sensitive skin adhesive is best! Typically, the tape on the body is intended

to stay for more than just overnight and the adhesives are strong enough to get wet in the shower and still last up to seven days.

Some brands have had more staying power than others. I have worn Sparthos brand tape, available on Amazon.com, for longer than a week and still find it sticky when removing it. The widely available KT Tape doesn’t last as long for me. Skin prep prior to application will help improve your wear time. Making sure skin is clean and dry without any oils or lotions applied is a must! Many brands offer different widths, from two to six inches, bulk rolls, pre-cut strips, extra sticky adhesive, sensitive skin adhesive, fun colors, and funky patterns. Whatever your preference, there’s a tape for you. Most tape brands will send a handy instruction page with suggested patterns for different areas of the body, but I find that searching what ails you on You Tube can be extremely helpful to determine where and how to apply tape to that area.

Adding kinesiology tape to your first aid kit is a great way to help decrease pain and increase your own body’s healing powers and maybe reduce the urge to reach for the ibuprofen!

TWO QUESTIONS THAT CAN TRANSFORM YOUR MARRIAGE

It had been three difficult years, yet as I tied the last knot on the rope, thinking, “I will not give up on us, on her,” something shifted. I realized I couldn’t change her, but I could change myself. I can change how I move toward her. I can change how I respond and not react. I am in control of what I can do daily to love her fully. I made a decision that night as I lay inches from her, yet felt miles apart. I knew what I must do.

The next morning, as she walked into the kitchen I asked her, “How can I serve you today? How can I make today better for you?” It was not met with excitement, yet these two small powerful questions would transform our marriage, and I believe they can do the same for you when asked and acted upon daily. You see, marriages don’t die in the big moments; they don’t become beautiful overnight. It’s in all the small moments, the small daily decisions, the small acts of service, and the small questions asked that can lead to a marriage falling apart or prepare a marriage for the BIG moments that inevitably will come. If I looked at all the small moments in your marriage, how you serve one another, your intentionality, then what picture would it paint, what would it reveal and say about your marriage, where it has been, and where it’s headed? Everything we do weaves through our marriage, knitting us together or pulling us apart.

Learning to serve one another is one of those threads that will knit you together and be a catalyst for healing in your marriage. Here is where you start, with a desire and devotion to serve your spouse. Desire first, then devotion to invest in one another daily. And desire and devotion are not the same thing. You can have the desire to work in and on your marriage,

great. Yet desire will only produce change if it’s married with devotion. And devotion comes from framing your desires, talking to your spouse about what you both hope to become in this area of serving, then moving towards one another with intentional acts of service that produce intimacy and connection.

Here is what we know to be true and have seen when working with couples in this area. Successful marriages do consistently what others do occasionally. I’ll say it again, successful marriages do consistently what others do occasionally. It means having an everyday marriage with a commitment to be an everyday servant. Let’s break down the last sentence: an everyday marriage is one where you work to improve your marriage daily. You commit to serving, loving, and pursuing one another in small and big ways. An everyday servant is someone who looks to serve their spouse each day intentionally. You look for ways to move toward and invest in your spouse each day- not only on the days when there is something you want or need, to butter them up to soften the blow of your mistake!

It does not have to be complicated; it implies lifting your head and seeing your spouse’s needs. Becoming an everyday servant is asking the question, “How can I best serve you today?” If that’s cleaning the kitchen, helping him with a project or picking up the kids for her, you do it, happily. Listen, I’m just like you; life happens. I get busy and, at times, self-focused. What I’m about to say sounds terrible, but it would be easier to take a bullet for her, because that’s a one-time thing. Bang bang. Done. Compared to doing the dishes every day, helping with the laundry when I’d rather be doing something fun for me. Serving is not always easy or what comes naturally. Yet, over time we can build a habit of serving our spouse, and soon they will ask you- “How can I make today better for you?”

“I FELT ALONE, BEATEN DOWN, AND ANGRY. I WAS HONESTLY UPSET, FRUSTRATED, AND ASKING MYSELF IF THIS MARRIAGE WOULD EVER CHANGE. I WAS AT THE END OF MY ROPE.”

Lots of

Luck!

Have you ever thought about how an inanimate object or animals can hold something like luck? Here are the historical stories behind some of the most popular good luck charms:

Horseshoes

The practice of hanging up horseshoes came from Saint Dunstan, a historical blacksmith who was commanded by the Devil to put horseshoes on his horse. Instead Dunstan, not wanting to obey the Devil, nailed the horseshoe to the Devil’s foot instead. The Devil was in so much pain, but Dunstan did nothing to remove the horseshoe, thus relieving the Devil’s pain. The Devil then declared that he would never enter a home or building with a horseshoe hanging over the front door. Therefore, you see some people hanging horseshoes over their doors.

Four-leaf clovers

There are various reasons why these unique plants are deemed as fortunate. For one, their rarity makes them more valuable (almost one in 10,000!). These are an old Irish symbol of luck that led the Celts to believe that they could see fairies and avoid any mischief that those fairies brought. The mischievous acts of these fairies were thought to be a source of bad luck. Also, the four leaves were believed to represent faith, love, hope, and luck. Other beliefs claim that the four leaves represented fame, wealth, health, and faithful love.

Elephants

Elephants are quite admirable creatures. They are highly intelligent with a great memory, capable of showing compassion and expressing grief, and are great at using tools. Why do they carry a reputation of good fortune? Elephants are known to represent strength, power, wisdom, and stability. Many cultures, especially Asian, practice placing small elephant statues or pictures next to the front door of their homes to bring good luck into the house. Also, many Asian business owners place elephant statues near the office entrance to provide stability and wisdom for the company and to attract success. Lastly, some people place two small elephant statues in the entrance hall of their home to bring longevity, success, and knowledge throughout the household.

Dice

Lucky dice became popularized during World War II where fighter pilots would go on missions with narrow odds of returning home. To increase their chances of a safe mission and return, they would bring lucky charms along with them on their flight, such as cards and dice. From this era, fuzzy dice were marketed in the late 1950s by hanging them on rearview mirrors and became a fuzzy fad. Dice also became a symbol of luck due to the amount of dice rolled in a game of chance. Maybe one may win by rolling a lucky 7…!

occurrences when this number uniquely shows up: seven days in a week; seven colors in a rainbow; and seven being the winning roll when playing with dice.

Ladybug

These adorable insects have been looked upon as lucky over the years by many different cultures. Some cultures claim that if a ladybug lands on your hand without you brushing it off, it will bring good fortune in your life. Other cultures say that if a ladybug is spotted by both a man and woman at the same time, they will fall in love! Belgians believed if a ladybug crawled across a single woman’s hand, she would get married soon. Farmers also saw ladybugs as a sign of fortune when they were spotted crawling over their crops, because that meant a plentiful harvest was on its way. It is also believed that the deeper their color is, and the more spots they have, the more luck they will bring!

Whether you believe in lucky charms or not, it’s always enjoyable and enlightening to plow the ground and explore the seeds that brought forth these beliefs. Happy St. Patrick’s Day!

#EMPOWERHER - 1 HOUR AT A TIME

On March 1, Dress for Success Winston-Salem kicks off its #EmpowerHer - 1 Hour at a Time fundraising campaign.

This second annual #EmpowerHer campaign is inspired by the belief that when a woman has opportunities to change her life for the better, she becomes powerful beyond measure.

We are thrilled to introduce our “EmpowerHer Champions” who will rally allies throughout the community to join this movement. Champions were selected because they inspire hope, confidence, and resilience among women. They will ask you to join them in giving one hour of your work compensation in support of women who need a little help taking the next step on their journey toward economic independence. By giving the equivalent of just one hour of pay, you join this movement of leaders and champions who believe in supporting the success of every woman.

For Dress for Success Winston-Salem, the success of this campaign translates to the tangible outcomes of new starts, moves out of generational poverty, and the personal transformation that comes with empowerment. “We are so honored to have these Champions as the faces of our #EmpowerHer campaign. They know that when we all help a little – the outcome is enormous,” says Robin Ervin, executive director. “We want everyone to be a part of this. It doesn’t matter what your hour of pay is. What matters is that you, like our Champions, believe in empowering women.”

Please Give to #EmpowerHer

Studies show that when a woman is employed, as many as six individuals in her household may follow out of poverty.

25% of women who participate in a mentoring program receive pay increases, compared to only 5% without mentors.

Dress for Success’ critical work helps women gain and sustain employment, and develop support systems.

“Ladies like me are really trying to get ahead in life. I needed a little help and encouragement — and that’s what I received at Dress for Success!” – Client, Heather M.

Gratitude is scientifically proven to help us cope better with stressful situations. It has been proven that gratitude works to give us a more positive outlook on life, and it certainly helps improve relationships. But how can we be more grateful? We’ve all heard tips about writing in a gratitude journal or listing five things you’re grateful for at the end of the day. Those ideas are good and obviously have merit. But what other steps can we take to be more grateful throughout the day?

DON’T RESERVE YOUR GRATITUDE FOR THE BIG THINGS.

Acknowledge the little things, too. Be grateful when someone lets you in front of them in traffic, or when you discover a hidden piece of chocolate in your desk drawer.

DIG DEEP, EVEN IN DIFFICULT CIRCUMSTANCES.

As the saying goes, “There is always, always something to be thankful for.” Even in the direst of circumstances – being grateful that you or a loved one has access to a specialist in a medical emergency or being grateful that the airbags deployed to ensure your safety in a car crash. Look for the positives even in the negatives.

VOLUNTEER.

There’s nothing like doing for others to make you grateful for the things you have. Volunteering is a wonderful way to remind yourself that there are people in the world who have more problems than you do… there are those who live daily in situations that will make you want to hug your own issues with thankfulness that you have them.

SAY, “THANK YOU.”

Another popular quote says it succinctly -- “Feeling gratitude and not expressing it is like wrapping a present and not giving it.” And as we all know, it’s better to give than to receive. Say thank you and give others the knowledge of your appreciation.

SMILE AT OTHER PEOPLE.

Smiling will immediately improve your mood, especially when your smile is returned. By improving your mood, you’re more in the mindset to look for the opportunities to be grateful.

Tips

To Be

Grateful

EAT RIGHT AND EXERCISE.

Self-care is an essential part of feeling grateful. When we feel good because we are eating healthy and being active, we can feel gratitude more easily.

BE PRESENT IN THE MOMENT.

Nothing can rob us of a sense of gratitude faster than living in the past or worrying about the future. Stay in the moment and recognize the good exactly where you are.

PICK YOUR WORDS CAREFULLY.

Negative words will bring you down. Train yourself to use positive, encouraging words that will uplift you.

CHOOSE YOUR COMPANY WISELY.

Some relationships are toxic, and when people bring you down, it may be time to consider stepping away from the relationship, or at least backing away a bit.

REFUSE TO COMPARE YOURSELF.

Accept that you are uniquely made and while it’s fine to want to improve yourself – you are not and will never be someone else. So resist the urge to compare your life to others, and be grateful for the person you were made to be. After all – you are truly one of a kind!

GET OUTSIDE AND ENJOY SOME FRESH AIR!

Being in nature is always a good thing.

BE HUMBLE.

Pride will never experience gratitude the way a humble heart will. Embrace humility and allow yourself to marvel at all the ways you’ve been blessed.

MOVE OVER CHARCUTERIE, There’s a New Board in Town

Look out charcuterie boards, butter boards are the latest food trend taking over TikTok and food blogs, and for good reason. We’ve seen the rise of “board” style serving over the last several seasons from brunch to dessert, quickly becoming something this decade will be known for. The latest butter board trend will make the list with it proving to be a simple, fast and an easy way to impress your guests with an appetizer that checks both the “shareable” and “sophisticated” boxes. While butter boards do have a few important reminders to make them a success, they really are a must have for your next gathering.

Starting with a higher quality butter, you can adorn your boards with an array of different ingredients and flavors or lean into a softer flavor profile. You can try different things like fresh herbs, edible flowers, jams and preserves, chopped nuts, soft cheeses, cured meats and more.

Nobody likes a butchered butter board! Before sharing our recipe roundup, be sure to follow these quick tips to ensure your butter board is successful from initial spread to serving.

• Soften your butter naturally, avoiding the microwave so the fat and milk don’t separate.

• Add salt no matter which recipe you choose to help draw out the flavors

• Line your board with parchment paper to make clean up easy and less greasy

• Serve with utensils and small plates for easy sharing and less mess

Bringing texture and flavor in full force, this board is the perfect appetizer to excite the senses and your guests!

Ingredients:

4 oz salted butter softened

4 oz goat cheese softened

1/4 cup fig jam or preserves

4 figs sliced

2 slices prosciutto

1/4 cup arugula

2 tablespoons walnuts, chopped

1/4 teaspoon red pepper flakes

flaky salt and black pepper, to taste

2 tablespoons balsamic glaze

Fresh rosemary, oregano, thyme, or basil to garnish

Crusty bread to serve

Instructions: Spread the butter on half of the board with the goat cheese on the other half. Layer on dollops of fig jam, figs, prosciutto, arugula, and walnuts. Season with red pepper flakes, flaky salt, and black pepper. Drizzle balsamic glaze on top. Garnish with fresh herbs and serve with toasted crusty bread or crackers.

Whether kicking off brunch or a girls’ night this board gives a little something sweet and savory!

Ingredients:

1 cup salted butter, at room temperature ¼ cup honey, divided 1 teaspoon cinnamon, divided 1, 2-inch piece honeycomb (optional)

Fresh bread, rolls, or crackers (for serving)

Instructions: Mix together in a standing or hand mixer, combining the softened butter, half of the honey (2 tablespoons), and ¾ teaspoon of cinnamon until smooth. Spread the butter in a single layer onto your clean serving board. Drizzle the remaining honey over the honey and sprinkle the top with the remaining ¼ teaspoon of cinnamon. Break the honeycomb into bite-size chunks and top the butter with the honeycomb. Serve with your favorite warmed bread, rolls, or crackers.

Ingredients:

2 sticks unsalted butter, at room temperature

Crispy shallots, toasted 1/4 cup cranberry sauce

1 teaspoon orange zest

Fresh rosemary or basil to garnish Salt & Pepper, to taste

Fresh challah, crostini or crackers (for serving)

Instructions: Mix room temperature butter with a hand mixer until well whipped. Toast crispy shallots on a cookie sheet at 300°F in the oven for just 5 minutes to get the ultimate crispiness. Sprinkle crispy shallots with salt and pepper in one section, ribbon the cranberry sauce in another and add orange zest and fresh herbs generously to the third section.

What It Is and How to Get More of It! CAREER WELLBEING:

According to Gallup, one-third of Americans are showing signs of an anxiety disorder or depression, and roughly seven in 10 people are struggling or suffering in their lives. We are undergoing a mental health crisis in our country and this, of course, bleeds over to the workplace. As a result, it is more important than ever for individuals and employers to focus on holistic wellbeing. This includes more than just physical wellness – it also includes mental, social, financial and career wellbeing.

We spend a lot of our time at work. As a result, it stands to reason that career wellbeing – liking what you do every day – is extremely important. To expand on the definition, career wellbeing is how you feel about your job today, your career goals tomorrow, and how your employment can help you accomplish what you want in life.

Many people say they are “living for the weekend” which is unfortunate because not thriving at work has a negative impact on our lives. According to an Investors in People study, the top reasons why people are unhappy at work are poor management (49%), followed by pay (40%), and not feeling valued as a member of staff (39%). Thirty percent of those questioned said that not enjoying the work itself was a core reason behind their unhappiness.

Employers definitely have some responsibility to create a culture where wellbeing can thrive if they want to retain and engage employees. There are many methods of doing this, but if you take a look at the list above, having well-trained, effective managers; fostering recognition and appreciation; and helping employees identify and use their strengths are top of the list.

You, as an individual, also have responsibility for your career wellbeing. Below are some strategies you can use to elevate and improve your satisfaction and engagement with your work.

1. Improve your awareness of your strengths, weaknesses, and preferences to find work that you enjoy doing. The Working Genius, a relatively new assessment by Patrick Lencioni that I have used to help others, is a great tool for this purpose.

2. Work on ways to boost your performance - like not procrastinating and getting more comfortable with asking for help. When you increase your performance, you feel a better sense of achievement and wellbeing as it relates to your work.

3. Increase your resilience by understanding how you deal with stress, your stress triggers, and how you can manage it more effectively.

4. Spend more time around people that you enjoy being around at work. Minimize contact to the extent that you can with negative coworkers or those that drain your energy.

5. At the end of each day, take a pause to appreciate what you have accomplished.

6. Have regular career conversations to talk about your progress and aspirations with your manager. If they don’t initiate this, you can!

7. Maintain a healthy work-life integration by setting clear boundaries which will help you increase your career, mental and physical well-being.

8. Actively take steps to learn and grow by developing your skills and behaviors, reading, researching, and learning from others.

At the end of the day, you are responsible for your own happiness and wellbeing. Taking charge of your career is critical to getting on the right track. So, start thinking about what you want and need to thrive in your career and keep taking the appropriate steps to get there.

Stepping Into and Conquering the Unknown

Life is full of the unknown. In fact, each day brings about a sense of the unknown. We have a general idea and schedule of what we are going to do, but we don’t see the full picture until it happens. There are also times when the unknown can happen on a larger scale, such as when a person wants to make a change or start something new in their life. Whether it’s a career change, a move, or creating a new business, it can be scary.

Stepping into the unknown means letting go and branching out of your comfort zone. It is blocking out the negative thoughts and feelings and believing that success will come. Extreme fear of the unknown is called xenophobia. With this phobia, people can have thoughts and beliefs about situations and challenges they simply don’t understand. When a person can’t see what is going to happen when all is said and done, doesn’t know the obstacles they will have to overcome, and doesn’t know if the effort will end in success, they can be motivated to not conquer the unknown and create the change they have so been wanting.

The good news is that stepping into and conquering the unknown can become easier through time and practice. It first starts by thinking about something you would like to accomplish. Then, create a plan on how

you will turn that goal into a reality. Part of that plan should take into account the unknown and possible strategies to use when things go astray. By having these ideas in place, you have more of a feeling of control.

Next, understand your fear. Consider what your fears are, find their causes, and how you can overcome them. As humans, we are programmed to always go to negative outcomes first. However, with positive thinking and being prepared, we can hopefully stop those fears from coming at the beginning. Jot down what is causing you worry and why. Maybe you tried to start a business and failed and that is holding you back from braving it all again. In addition to forming an action plan for the fears, develop ways to help you cope if the fear, unfortunately, does play out. Lastly, determine whether the fear is realistic or not. Do you have reasons to support this fear or are you stressing over change? Has this fear happened before? If so, how did you handle it? Did the fear cause you to fail previously?

Now, a portion of conquering the unknown does mean you have to accept that failure could happen. It also means to understand that failure does not define you and won’t break you. If something doesn’t work out at first, don’t stop. Instead, take a step back and reflect on the positives and negatives. What worked? What didn’t work? Use the setbacks as lessons for your next go.

It can be stressful when a person is transforming an area of her life and bringing about something new. Mindfulness is one practice that can help lower the stress and draw you out of your comfort zone. To be mindful, you need to take one thing at a time, day by day, moment by moment. You are fully present in your life. Mindfulness is similar to meditation, because you are pausing to absorb everything surrounding yourself. Through mindfulness, you are able to calm your mind and find the peace to carry on. Also, schedule in breaks and self-care whenever you need it.

Lastly, be open to new experiences and trust yourself. Instead of thinking about what could go wrong, think about what could go right and how your life will change for the better because of your risks and efforts. Start small by trying new restaurants, visiting new places, and meeting new people before taking on a larger change. By conquering these new opportunities, you will build up the courage to take on the world.

Stepping into and conquering the unknown can be challenging, but well worth it. You never know what could happen if you never try something new.

FOR FANS OF FOOD!

Jeffrey Adams on Fourth

Jeffrey Adams on Fourth is my dining destination of choice when I’m craving a night out on the town. In fact, on nearly a monthly basis, I can be found sitting at a candle-lit, high top table by a window overlooking 4th Street, sipping on a bubbly cocktail, and waiting to see where the night takes me. In my opinion, Jeffrey Adams is the ideal spot to get the night started on a Friday or Saturday, but also doubles as a posh, post-work dinner spot on a weekday.

Aside from its prime location in the heart of the downtown action, Jeffrey Adams’ dimly lit, cozy-chic interior with a beautiful bar initially led me to adopting Jeffrey Adams as my go-to weekend haunt for nearly three years in a row. The menu’s cocktail, wine, and beer selections reach a wide customer base, but the menu’s modern appetizer, entree, and dessert choices are the establishment’s true selling points. This should not come as a surprise to Winston-Salem locals, however, as Jeffrey Adams happens to be just one of restaurateur Adam Andrews’ genius creations. Owned and operated by both Adam Andrews and Jeff Bassett, Jeffrey Adams places an emphasis on providing outstanding service combined with serving high-quality meals made with fresh and local ingredients, some of which even come from Adam’s own Andrews Farm. The dynamic Andrews and Bassett duo also recruited the help of Executive Chef Will Hoffman, along with Sous Chef John Danziger and General Manager Matthew Saseen, to make the magic of Jeffrey Adams happen.

Although I usually visit solo, I was excited to change things up and dine with the Forsyth Woman ladies for an unforgettable experience - not to mention on a Tuesday evening, which happened to be sporting a half-price wine special that the three of us happily took advantage of. I selected a glass of sauvignon blanc to start, which paired nicely with our first appetizer consisting of three perfectly portioned crab cakes atop fire-roasted corn and a Cajun remoulade. As a major fan of crab cakes, I was nothing short of pleased with our first dish, and was equally excited when we were presented with seared ahi tuna dressed with wasabi, soy reduction, seaweed, pickled ginger, and Asian slaw. The sesame seed-crusted slices of tuna were pleasantly mild in taste, with the seed rim adding a balanced crunch to

each bite. For meat lovers, I highly suggest the pork belly smothered in a delectable Korean BBQ sauce and paired with house-made pickles to kickstart your meal.

After the ladies and I devoured our appetizers, we ordered additional glasses of wine (I stuck with my trusty sauvignon blanc) and anxiously awaited our entrees. The special that night happened to be a filet mignon cooked perfectly and paired with grilled shrimp, buttery scalloped potatoes, and asparagus, with an herb cream sauce and chipotle aioli lining the dish. I was ecstatic about this special, as the restaurant’s filet mignon topped with a cabernet demi-glace is my typical main menu meal of choice.

For seafood lovers, the pan-seared grouper is a light fish dish perfectly dressed with fire-roasted tomatoes, artichokes, capers, baby spinach, asparagus, and a touch of lemon. In my opinion, a restaurant’s mashed potatoes can make or break a meal, and the grouper’s side of heartwarming mashed potatoes did not disappoint. For a heartier seafood meal, I highly suggest the seafood risotto, which combines scallops, shrimp, and lobster with creamy gouda cheese, baby spinach, and sun-dried tomato pesto for a fork full of flavor. Because we were filling up quickly, I was secretly hoping to have leftover risotto to take home for my lunch the next day, and fortunately, my wishes were granted.

The final show-stopper of the night was none other than the iconic chocolate creme brûlée from the dessert menu. Jeffrey Adams is one of the only local restaurants where I have been able to find chocolate creme brûlée, and given its perfect caramelization covering an airy chocolate custard, it’s a tough act to follow for competitors.

Be sure to book your table in advance on OpenTable, or call the restaurant directly to make a reservation at (336)-448-1714. Visit www.jeffreyadamsws. com to view the menu and read more about the team. Conversations with Your BFF

As the New Year marches on, you may have been hoping that life would slow down a bit after the holidays, but now you are as busy as ever – being pulled in every way, by everyone. At the end of each day, you have little to no energy, are drained emotionally and mentally, and bedtime leads to making mental notes for tomorrow’s to-do list. I can give my two cents worth on this subject, but friends, I struggle with this, too. So how can you not feel drained all the time? I am so glad you asked!

WHAT OTHERS THINK..

The great philosopher, Dr. Phil says, quite often, “You wouldn’t worry so much about what people thought of you, if you knew how seldom they did.” Repeat that a few times to yourself, or out loud if no one is close by and listening. It’s really none of your business what others think of you. We tend to make up these elaborate conversations in our heads that we think others are having behind our backs, but if you really knew the truth, you probably rarely enter into their minds.

WHAT OTHERS APPRECIATE…

Too much time is spent trying to gain approval from people who really don’t appreciate the effort we put into our actions or comments. You can probably count on one hand, minus a few fingers, those in your life who are truly appreciative of what you bring to their lives. Invest in those people and keep those who have shown you over and over that your efforts aren’t appreciated at arm’s length unless they show new behavior toward you.

WHAT OTHERS SUPPORT…

If friends, or those you think are friends, have a pattern of not supporting you and your endeavors, maybe you need to look at those relationships to see

‘How Can I Not Feel

Drained All the Time?’

whether they are actually in the friends basket. I do believe that friends should tell you if you are making a bad decision, but if that becomes a pattern, unless you really have a problem making good choices, you deserve a ‘tribe’ to support you.

WHAT BRINGS YOU JOY…

Too much of our days are spent doing things that don’t bring us joy. The work we do is sometimes just a paycheck and not checking the ‘rewarding’ box in life. Activities that you feel like you have to do, which we all have, may need to be exchanged for those things that bring you joy. A good balance of the ‘must dos’ and the ‘want to dos’ is needed in our lives.

WHAT OTHERS BRING…

Most importantly, don’t spend your time and energy on people who drain your tank. We all have a level of empathy and friends who always seem to be in some sort of drama. You offer to help, a way out, a recommendation, but they continue to wallow in their misery. The only thing changing is your energy level and it’s going down. You can make yourself available to these people, but don’t invest to the point that the change they need is dependent on you. Your peace is important, so focus on what adds to your energy, not things, activities or people that drain your energy tank.
