the publisher perspective

Did you know that almost two thirds of Americans with Alzheimer’s are women?

Did you know that at age 70, seniors living with Alzheimer’s are twice as likely to die before age 80 than those who do not have the disease?

Alzheimer’s and Brain awareness month is observed in June and it’s a subject near and dear to me. My papaw passed away in 2019 with undiagnosed Alzheimer’s and my great grandmother also suffered from this awful disease. Alzheimer’s is a progressive form of dementia and is not a normal part of aging. What can be done to reduce your risk?

- Maintain a healthy weight

- Be physically active

- Quit smoking

- Avoid excessive drinking

- Get enough sleep

Maintaining and nurturing social relationships, keeping your brain active, and continuing to learn new skills are also things that research continues to show may lower your risk of cognitive decline. If you’ve been neglecting spending enough quality time with your family and friends, this is your sign to make it a priority! Your brain will thank you.

Speaking of quality time with friends—we have an extra special Girls’ Night Out event coming up on Wednesday June 7th at ROAR! 4 floors to explore with multiple dining options and gaming, including boutique bowling, virtual golf and interactive mini golf! Learn more on page 35 and be sure to sign up for our newsletter at forsythwoman.com so you can receive our monthly GNO email reminders!

While I’d strongly encourage you to read this issue cover-to-cover (it’s a pretty good issue in my unbiased opinion!), I would like to mention a few highlights:

- Twisted Pine Foodie Review – page 66

With Father’s Day coming up this month, I have to wish my dad (aka Teej) a very happy Father’s Day! I got my blue eyes from him, as well as my strong aversion to asking for help. Ha! Relationships with parents are different after you’ve been through a near-death experience with them. We thought we had lost my dad in 2019 after he had a massive stroke. It was no doubt the scariest phone call I’ve ever gotten. While I wouldn’t wish the experience on anyone, I am extremely grateful for every minute I am able to spend with him.

Brain Health Awareness: Why June is Important for Alzheimer’s Prevention

June is Alzheimer’s and Brain Awareness Month, a time to focus on the importance of brain health and raise awareness about Alzheimer’s disease and other forms of dementia. These conditions affect millions of people around the world and in our community, and the number of cases is expected to continue to rise in the coming years. However, there are steps we can take to keep our brains healthy and reduce the risk of developing Alzheimer’s and other forms of dementia.

Alzheimer’s disease is a progressive brain disorder that causes problems with memory, thinking, and behavior. It is the most common cause of dementia, accounting for about 60 to 80 percent of cases. Other forms of dementia include vascular dementia, Lewy body dementia, and frontotemporal dementia.

While there is no known cure for Alzheimer’s or other forms of dementia, research suggests that certain lifestyle factors can help reduce the risk of developing these conditions. Here are some key steps you can take to keep your brain healthy and reduce the risk of Alzheimer’s and dementia:

Exercise regularly

Physical exercise is one of the best things you can do to keep your brain healthy. Studies have shown that regular exercise can improve cognitive function and reduce the risk of developing Alzheimer’s and other forms of dementia. Aim for at least 30 minutes of moderate-intensity exercise most days of the week.

Eat a healthy diet

A healthy diet can help reduce the risk of Alzheimer’s and dementia. Focus on eating a diet that is high in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and lean protein. Avoid processed foods, sugary drinks, and foods that are high in saturated and trans fats.

Stay mentally active

Mental stimulation is important for keeping your brain healthy and reducing the risk of Alzheimer’s and dementia. Challenge your brain by learning new skills, reading, playing games, and doing puzzles. Social interaction is also important, so make an effort to stay connected with friends and family.

Get enough sleep

Sleep is essential for good brain health. Aim for seven to eight hours of sleep each night, and establish a regular sleep routine. Avoid caffeine and alcohol in the hours leading up to bedtime, and create a quiet, comfortable sleep environment.

Manage stress

Chronic stress can have negative effects on the brain and increase the risk of Alzheimer’s and dementia. Find healthy ways to manage stress, such as meditation, yoga, or deep breathing exercises.

Stay socially engaged

Social isolation has been linked to an increased risk of dementia. Make an effort to stay connected with friends and family, and participate in social activities that you enjoy.

Protect your brain from injury

Head injuries can increase the risk of developing Alzheimer’s and dementia. Protect your brain by wearing a helmet when riding a bike or participating in contact sports. Take steps to prevent falls, such as using handrails and installing grab bars in your home.

In addition to these lifestyle factors, it’s important to seek medical attention if you notice any changes in your memory, thinking, or behavior. Early diagnosis and treatment of Alzheimer’s and other forms of dementia can help slow the progression of the disease and improve quality of life.

While there is no known cure for these conditions, there are steps we can take to keep our brains healthy and reduce the risk of developing Alzheimer’s and dementia. Keeping It Real GREAT MEN

Have you ever wondered what it’s like to be a guy? Come on, girls. Tell the truth. You have, haven’t you? Surely, you’ve envied how men can be out-the-door in ten minutes flat.

Perhaps you feel a little begrudged that guys get pot-bellies and no one notices. (This never happens in a woman’s world!)

Menfolk get to live less stressed by comparison, right? At least, it seems that way when you ponder things from a woman’s perspective. But is that really fair? Think about it. Guys are getting punched from every direction these days.

Culture does its best to disassemble the whole notion of manhood. We’ve gone from Father Knows Best in the 1950s to Father Knows Nothing in today’s psyche. Don’t believe me? Consider the role of fathers in popular sitcoms. Either the dad is completely absent or painstakingly detached from things that matter.

It’s amazing the impact the media has on our perceptions. If we hear something long enough, we find ourselves believing it. What’s worse, we find ourselves replicating it.

As we approach Father’s Day, I can’t help but consider all the guys who turn culture’s idea of manhood on its head.

I personally know numerous men whose families came apart at the seams while their children were quite young. Rather than follow society’s script, these dads chose to become the primary caregiver for their kids. To further complicate matters, many of the children were female. I’ve watched with admiration as dads taught daughters things that moms generally manage. They simply did what had to be done.

These men worked tirelessly to provide for their families while simultaneously being active in their children’s lives. They lived out their faith in visible ways. These guys invested so sacrificially with little concern for their own wellbeing. Raising remarkable kids became their fixation.

Now I know single moms are thinking, “I do this, too, and nobody’s giving me a medal.” Hear me, I applaud you. In fact, I was raised by a single mom to whom I owe my life. Honoring remarkable men subtracts nothing from you. I’m simply making the point that incredible dads break culture’s stereotypes daily. Such guys demonstrate what it means to truly be great.

So what makes a man great? Great men work hard to provide for their families but realize children don’t need more stuff. They need a father who is present.

Great men use their strength to help the weak and invest their time in something beyond themselves.

Great men don’t have all the answers but their Faith directs them to the One who does. They stand tall and yet, they bow low.

Maybe you desire to be a better dad. So what are you waiting for? It’s a new day. Just do it!

Perhaps you’re a mother who longs to witness these qualities in the father of your children. Why don’t you speak to the father of your children like he’s great? For real! It’s not magic, but what have you got to lose? Eventually, it just may encourage him to pursue nobler ways.

Meanwhile, take notice of the great men who surround you. In fact, while culture is doing its best to erase all semblance of genuine greatness in men, why don’t you take a moment to thank them? It will matter more than you realize. I promise!

4. Forsyth Medical Supply will file a customer’s warranty on any eligible products, and retain that information in-house for future reference. If something goes wrong with the product, they will contact the manufacturer directly, to obtain a replacement product or part.

5. Service technicians on staff are readily available to repair equipment purchased at Forsyth Medical Supply. That is a perk customers don’t always appreciate until there’s a problem — then they are grateful for a local purchase, not one delivered by Amazon!

Enjoy Summer

Even if it’s not Your Favorite Season

What you are about to read may sound shocking, possibly even heretical. Well, here goes: in spite of moving to the South almost six years ago, I have never been much of a summer girl. As a child, I was bookish, introverted, hopelessly non-athletic, and, according to the adults who supposedly knew better, “too serious” for my age.

Fast forward some decades and I’m happy to say that I’ve evolved: still bookish, but less introverted; still non-athletic, but a walker who regularly does yoga, Pilates, and such; still serious but a far cry from “too serious”! Even so, summer is still fourth place in my personal lineup of seasonal faves. Frankly, autumn is my thing and I am not alone. Studies show that Americans prefer October over all other months, with May a close second. December ranks just behind May – probably a nod to the holidays, as January is the least favorite month of the year. Oh, that troubles me because I also love January. The stillness, the quiet after the festivities, the “begin again” opportunity that suits my contemplative soul. But I digress...

Summer was hard enough to navigate in Connecticut, and I knew that after the novelty wore off, I’d have to find ways to make the most of the long stretch that is a North Carolina summer.

STRATEGIES FOR ENJOYING SUMMER

Practical Preparation

The most important part of creating an enjoyable summer starts in my thought process. When that first, way too early 85-plus degree day arrives, I need to be prepared so that I don’t fall into a preemptive seasonal slump. For me, this means planning for summer in late winter and early spring. I don’t want to just “get through it,” so I challenge myself to be ready for it and to create ways to enjoy it. I often make lists of things I will do and plans I will put in place for the season ahead.

Seasonal Expressions

One such list is all about my home. My home is truly my personal castle and my little nest. My list for this summer season included biting the bullet and having new cushions made for my veranda furniture. Thinking about this upgrade and planning for it created positive anticipation for the warm “veranda months” ahead. I also scanned my seasonal decorations, donating some, tossing others, and enjoying an online hunt for new wreaths and similar decor. Note: winter is the best time to shop for summer items online. The same is true of bathing suits, ladies!

Experiences to Look Forward To

I learned early on that the best time for my sister to make her annual visit is in late June or July, not April! Every spring, we plan what we will do while she is here. That always includes a lazy afternoon at a vineyard, some time in our local pool, and a day trip. This is also the best time to visit and hang out in our local bookstores, Reynolda House, and other fascinating, local indoor venues. With temperatures soaring outdoors, they are a welcome reprieve.

Working with Mother Earth

And there is, of course, the garden. The spring flurry of activity is actualized – to one degree or another – once summer settles in. While a combination of triumphs and flops is usually the outcome, I get to observe all of it – as well as the many birds I attract – from the elevated perch of my newly-cushioned veranda, binoculars in hand!

Gratitude

None of these strategies is self-sustaining without the discipline of the heart. I am grateful for every summer I have known and learned to enjoy, every summer that gracefully makes possible the magic of fall.

Marie Jackson | Oil Paint and Mixed Media Artist

This month’s featured artist, Marie Jackson, has a talent for telling tales of the human experience with every stroke of her paintbrush. Taking inspiration from multiple facets of her own heritage, travels and relationships Marie does a beautiful job creating work that lifts the veil on our own memories and dreams alike.

How would you describe your work?

I use classical oil paint techniques on various surfaces ranging from the standard canvas to recycled cardboard beer cartons. I love to work with oil paints because of the nature of the medium: translucent layers upon layers can give my work a beautiful glow, which cannot be accomplished by other mediums. I describe my colorwork as tangy, creamy, and spicy.

What influences your art?

My typical subject matter is motherhood, children, womanhood, individual people, or relationships between us. I hope my work stirs something in its viewers, like bringing back memories or opening the door to a daydream. The important people in my life often inspire my artwork: my two daughters, my husband, my family and friends. I also call back to personal lived experiences, like jumping in puddles, North Carolina hills, beach trips, Tennessee backroads, etc. My dad was in the military, so we traveled a lot, especially overseas (Italy, Japan, Korea). With my mom being from Mexico I often pull color and texture inspiration from my heritage and travel memories with her.

How have you evolved, personally, as an artist?

I was born an artist, as we all are. But the first moment I realized “I want to be an artist,” at age nine, was when I completed a watercolor painting. Life ebbed and flowed, and many mediums have smeared my hands since then, but I still gravitate to paint. My pieces are ever evolving as I do. Usually I choose a topic

or a material or a canvas-size that I’m not comfortable with and I tackle that. Whatever scares me the most at the time is what I lean into.

How do you carve out time to be creative?

First off, I grant myself grace. Between being a mom, a wife, and full-time IT Project manager, finding time and energy to paint is a challenge. I’m coming out of a season where painting once a week was a win. My hope is that a new season is approaching with more days of paint on my weekly calendar. On the days I can’t break out the paint and current medium, I spend time sketching both with pencil and on my tablet.

What are you working on that excites you right now?

I’d love to find time to explore sensory art; touchable/textured 2D art, makeyour-own-art (where the piece is interactive and can be modified by the viewer), scent or sound infused art. I’m also excited about every 2D painting I tackle, whether it be commission work or personally inspired.

What is one piece of advice you’d like to share with fellow artists?

If you’re in a lull period, no matter how long it’s been, I pray you find the inspiration to pick up your tool again. Whatever life has given you in between art pieces, you can use it to inspire your next bout of creation.

If you are interested in learning more about this month’s artist, Marie Jackson, you can follow her on Instagram @mahree_ or TikTok @mariejacksonart. To inquire about commission work you may email mariejacksonart@gmail.com.

A monthly column that keeps its finger on the pulse of Forsyth’s artists and their inspiring stories!

Bringing Yourself Back to the Present Moment:

A Guide to the 5 Grounding Techniques

Grounding techniques are simple yet powerful strategies that can help you manage stress and anxiety. One of the most effective and widely used grounding techniques involves acknowledging your surroundings through the five senses: sight, touch, sound, smell, and taste. By doing so, you can bring yourself back to the present moment and calm your mind, which can reduce feelings of overwhelm and anxiety.

In this article, we’ll explore the benefits of the five grounding techniques and how you can use them to calm yourself down and reduce stress.

ACKNOWLEDGE 5 THINGS YOU CAN SEE AROUND YOU

When you’re feeling anxious or overwhelmed, it’s easy to get lost in your thoughts and lose touch with your surroundings. Acknowledging five things you can see around you can help you reorient yourself and bring your focus back to the present moment. This technique can be especially useful when you’re in a new or unfamiliar environment.

For example, if you’re feeling anxious at work, take a moment to look around your office and notice five things you can see. This could be anything from a clock on the wall to a plant on your coworker’s desk. By acknowledging these objects, you’re reminding yourself that you’re in a safe and familiar environment.

ACKNOWLEDGE 4 THINGS YOU CAN TOUCH

The sense of touch is another powerful way to ground yourself and bring yourself back to the present moment. When you’re feeling anxious or overwhelmed, take a moment to touch four things around you. This could be anything from the surface of your desk to the texture of your clothing.

By focusing on the physical sensations of touch, you’re bringing your attention to your body and away from your thoughts. This can help you feel more grounded and connected to the present moment.

ACKNOWLEDGE 3 THINGS YOU CAN HEAR

The sense of hearing is another powerful tool for grounding yourself and reducing anxiety. When you’re feeling overwhelmed, take a moment to listen for three things you can hear. This could be anything from the sound of traffic outside to the hum of the air conditioning.

By focusing on the sounds around you, you’re bringing your attention to the present moment and away from your worries. This can help you feel more calm and centered.

ACKNOWLEDGE 2 THINGS YOU CAN SMELL

The sense of smell is closely linked to our emotions and can be a powerful tool for reducing anxiety. When you’re feeling overwhelmed, take a moment to notice two things you can smell. This could be anything from the aroma of coffee to the scent of fresh flowers.

By focusing on your sense of smell, you’re bringing yourself into the present moment and away from your thoughts. This can help you feel more relaxed and centered.

ACKNOWLEDGE 1 THING YOU CAN TASTE

The sense of taste is another powerful way to ground yourself and reduce anxiety. When you’re feeling overwhelmed, take a moment to focus on one thing you can taste. This could be anything from a sip of water to a piece of gum.

By focusing on your sense of taste, you’re bringing your attention to your body and away from your thoughts. This can help you feel more centered and present in the moment.

These five grounding techniques are a simple yet powerful way to manage stress and anxiety. By acknowledging your surroundings through sight, touch, sound, smell, and taste, you can bring yourself back to the present moment and calm your mind. The techniques are easy to use and can be done anywhere, making them a valuable tool for anyone looking to reduce stress and anxiety in their daily lives.

ADORNING YOUR BEST LIFE!

Their portfolio of completed projects is constantly growing, so they are confident that efforts are headed in the right direction! The team knows they have been so fortunate to have worked with so many great clients, and are looking forward to accepting some new projects this summer.

THE WAREHOUSE

While Accent Prone was launched as a store primarily focused on selling market sample furniture, Cheri and Justin have expanded their business to offer mostly new and custom furniture. Expanding the store offerings beyond market samples has allowed Accent Prone to be more creative with the items they bring to the shop! But, there are still LOTS of market samples for sale at the 12,000-square-foot warehouse that’s open to the public on select Saturdays.

The AP warehouse is packed full of furniture market samples including upholstery, dining room furniture, bedroom collections, sideboards, and more. Customers are always excited to see what’s new and snag some great deals. You never know what you may find there!

What has the creative, fun-loving Accent Prone team in Kernersville been up to lately? You know it’s always something stylish and unique to celebrate your everyday life — and you certainly wouldn’t be wrong!

THE LIFESTYLE

Let’s just say that on the store front, new things continue to arrive weekly, which means too long between visits might leave you missing out on a great find! THE OBSERVATIONS WE MAKE FROM PEOPLE WATCHING

You are waiting in a busy area for an hour or so. People are coming and going; conversations happening all around you. As you wait, you start to notice and observe those in your surroundings. You listen in on their conversations or put together your own words in your head as you watch them interact. Those two people in the corner hugged – are they seeing each other for the first time in a long time? Laughter comes from the table across the way — was a funny story or joke just told?

People watching is something we all do from time to time. According to the Oxford Languages Dictionary, people watching can be defined as “the action or practice of spending time idly observing people in a public place.” Humans are inherently curious and somewhat nosey creatures. We are interested in what is going on with those around us. We want to learn from others, observe the various personalities, see how other people live, and try to find similarities between ourselves and strangers. When it comes to people watching, a person will soon realize that there are more common traits between people and that the differences between us are actually bringing us closer together rather than dividing us. However, these aren’t the only two observations we can make from people watching.

Through this habit, you notice the obvious first, such as what people are wearing, their general dispositions, and what is currently occupying their time. Are they rushing to an appointment? Talking rudely to someone on their cell phone? Or are they wearing the latest styles? By looking at the first impressions, we can tell a great deal about a person. In addition, we can possibly steal a trick or two to help better our own lives. For example, you notice someone reacting calmly in a stressful situation and you use some of their tricks for yourself on how to respond when things aren’t going your way. Lastly, you will see how people carry themselves with their posture. From their posture, you can tell how they feel about themselves. Whether they are confident, have high self-esteem, or maybe are tired.

Next, you will discover more about relationship roles from people watching, especially who is the listener and who is the talker. As you are sitting on a bench in a park, you notice a couple walking by and observe one doing all the talking and the other doing the listening. From this you can learn more about the value of listening to those around you. The benefits of listening include understanding other perspectives, having impactful responses and conversations, and working toward eliminating any misunderstandings.

In regard to relationship roles, through people watching a person can understand more about various cultures and types of backgrounds in the world. It can be interesting to see the different roles within families and generations in other cultures.

Lastly, people watching will remind us of the good still left in the world. By observing others, we notice the kind actions toward strangers, the moments of happiness between loved ones, and how people take genuine interest in activities they enjoy. We become more empathetic and gain a better understanding of people, in general. We realize that every human goes through good times and challenging times. We also realize that our interactions with each other can make a huge impact on our daily lives, whether we know it or not.

People watching provides us with a mindfulness activity that forces us to be still and take in our surroundings. We become present in the moment. People watching is considered a negative hobby by some, but it’s not. People watching allows us the opportunity to learn from others and find the beauty in the world. So, the next time you find yourself with extra time, put down your phone, and observe those around you.

Purpose Push:

You Are Intentioned

In this world of at least 8 billion humans, it can be difficult to believe you will make an impact with the time you have on Earth. It can be even more difficult to believe One source created and simultaneously cares for us all. I constantly have to meditate on Luke 12:28 and remember that if He had a purpose for all the flowers and animals, He surely has a wellintentioned plan for me.

Intentioned means having purpose of a specified kind. Purpose is a part of our genetic makeup but the differentiator between those who see God’s plans for their lives and those who don’t is simply believing they are enough.

Some things in our life stories make it harder for us to excel while some come so naturally they can feel underserved. But if you are aware of your unfair obstacles, you won’t internalize them and will find the endurance to push through. And if you are aware of your unfair advantages, you can milk them for all they are worth (and not feel bad about it because God gave that advantage to you)!

So let’s go through them:

UNFAIR OBSTACLES

Appearance: I must mention this because we know when we’re closed out because of our physical appearance. Race, hair, body weight, gender, and disabilities, are just a few examples of how we’re judged before we even utter a word. Combat this by putting the spotlight back on those who judge and exposing their biases, or simply move on without them.

Beliefs & Lifestyle: Things like our spirituality and sexual orientation can cause nonsupporters to shy away from connecting with us on a deeper level. Being unapologetic is the best way to combat this. When you are being yourself, you become a magnet for the energy you put out, even from those who don’t share your beliefs.

Economics & Environment: This could be the toughest obstacle but we read about people who have overcome the odds of poverty and toxic environments all the time and you can be one of them. Read these stories and envision yourself in them because you’re no different from them. Become a student at life by learning as much as you can. We can’t choose what we’re born into but we can choose how we respond to what we’re given.

Trauma: John 16:33 tells us we will have trouble. God doesn’t invite trauma in our lives but because we live in a sinful world, it happens. Remember God will use everything and turn it around for good (Romans 8:28). He will use your trauma to liberate others and bless you abundantly. Combat the lie of

the enemy that you can’t overcome it by going to therapy and staying in God’s Word.

UNFAIR ADVANTAGES

Appearance, Beliefs and Lifestyles: Now let’s flip the script because there will be people who intentionally seek you out because of your race, hair, body weight, gender, orientation, disabilities, etc. I no longer feel bad about being a proud Black, Christian, heterosexual woman with curly hair and weight that fluctuates up and down. I’ve been able to be in rooms and receive favor because of these characteristics and that’s how God wanted it to be. He was purposeful in how He created me. The same goes for you, so use those unfair advantages for your benefit and for the benefit of others who don’t have them. When we work together and advocate for one another, our obstacles just may cease to exist.

Skills & Talents: God gave us all supernatural gifts. There are things no one else can do quite like you. When you discover those things, cultivate them - it’s going to change your life! It can be hard to value the skills and talents that come easy but recognize that is God giving you supernatural favor.

Network: Have you heard the saying, “It’s not what you know but who you know”? God is so strategic with who He places into our lives! Embrace those who can help you reach your goals and make sure you are using your unfair advantages to help them as well.

Everything about you is on purpose. From your physical makeup to the name of your business, God knew why you entered this world and He has a plan for you. Surrender to it because He knows what He’s doing and watch His intentions unfold. I have faith in you.

The Power of Local:

Supporting local businesses is more important now than ever before. In a world dominated by big-box stores and online retail giants, it can be easy to overlook the small businesses that make our communities unique. However, supporting local businesses is crucial for the success and vitality of our neighborhoods and cities. Let’s explore the importance of supporting our local communities of Forsyth County, and the ways in which we can make a positive impact by shopping locally.

4 REASONS SUPPORTING FORSYTH COUNTY MATTERS

1. Local Businesses Contribute to the Local Economy

When you shop at a local business, you’re helping to support the local economy. Local businesses create jobs, pay taxes, and reinvest in the community, which can help to create a more vibrant and thriving local economy.

2. Local Businesses Give Back to the Community

Local businesses are often involved in the community, sponsoring events, donating to local charities, and participating in other activities that help to give back to the community. When you support local, you’re helping to support these efforts and contribute to the well-being of the community as a whole.

3. Local Businesses Add Character and Charm to Our Communities

Local businesses are often unique and one-of-a-kind, adding character and charm to our communities. Whether it’s a quirky coffee shop, a boutique clothing store, or a mom-and-pop hardware store, local businesses help to create a sense of place and identity that can’t be replicated by chain stores.

4. Supporting Local Helps to Preserve the Environment

Shopping at local businesses can also help to reduce our carbon footprint. Local businesses often source their products from nearby suppliers, which means that they don’t have to be transported from far away. This can help to reduce the amount of fossil fuels used in transportation, which is better for the environment.

two timeless transformations

The beauty of transforming homes is that every space presents a fresh start, a unique challenge, a puzzle to be solved. This is where ICON Custom Builders excels: assembling the ideal team for every project, and creating beautiful, timeless spaces catered to each homeowner. ICON’s commitment to excellence and diverse portfolio keeps some homeowners coming back again and again.

Two couples, who had partnered with ICON on other projects, collaborated with design coordinator Katherine Yeager to dream up their primary bath spaces. Both projects had a similar goal: to create an elevated space that feels bright, fresh, and timeless. However, each had a different design plan: new construction for Nancy and John, and a renovation for Leigh and Kim.

“These projects were fun because they involved two very different approaches:

starting from scratch with a whole new build, and transforming a space while staying within the same footprint,” Katherine said. These two bath spaces show the range of what ICON’s design-build team can deliver for their clients.

Nancy and John – who have lived in their 1923 Buena Vista home for over 50 years – desired a primary suite on the first floor so they could age in place. To accomplish this, ICON converted the existing playroom into a bedroom and added an adjacent bath space. “This project was all new – we got to dream it, scheme it, and bring it to life,” Katherine said.

“We had dreamed of a downstairs primary bed and bath but we wanted it to complement our century-old home,” Nancy said. Katherine’s design decisions in the new space honored the home’s traditional feel. She opted for marble

hexagonal floor tile, and selected polished porcelain for the zero-entry shower, combining beauty and function. The bay windows flood the space with natural light and showcase the seating area, which provides an area to unwind and enjoy the beautiful space.

A few miles down the road, Leigh and Kim – who have enjoyed their 1990s home for 15 years and who have been gradually making updates – wanted to modernize their bath. Keeping the existing layout, ICON made thoughtful decisions to maximize the floor plan, create more storage, and invite tranquility into the space.

“This transformation involved looking at the space, seeing what we have, and re-envisioning it,” Katherine said. “Since we weren’t moving anything around, we had to bring those wow factors in.” When it came to making selections, Leigh said: “I trusted Katherine completely.” From the accent wall tile to the marble countertops to the matte black plumbing fixtures – each element provides contemporary touches to the design and reflects Leigh’s style.

Katherine gets to know her clients’ styles and wish lists before developing a design plan: “Figuring out what is sentimental, a must-have, or an existing piece the client can’t live without…sometimes that is the jumping-off point for the entire design.”

For Nancy, this item was a family heirloom – an antique chandelier passed down for generations. For Leigh, it was a new soaking tub for the entire family to enjoy. These standout pieces shine in each space and shape the rest of the design.

“Since these were repeat clients, we

really understood their tastes and goals,” Katherine said. “Keeping in line with the overall feel of the home is always our priority.” ICON meets clients’ needs while remaining true to the character of each home – a delicate path that the team seems to walk with ease, no matter the project.

Katherine has noticed that homeowners are often focused on projects that many people see, like kitchens and entertaining spaces. However, sometimes the most impactful are private spaces, like a primary bath. “It’s where you start and end your day, and it can really set the tone,” she said.

Nancy craved a serene, spa-like, high-end primary bath. Leigh wanted a space for relaxation. “Our space before did not make me feel calm – I would stand in there and dream about all the things I wanted to change,” Leigh said. “Now we love our bathroom…it is a peaceful space that has a calming effect.”

These finished spaces, although achieved in two distinct ways, are unified in timeless tranquility. “Timeless can mean different things to different people,”

Katherine shared. “I helped both of these clients make timeless selections for their specific tastes and their specific homes.” Whether beginning an addition or renovation, or embracing a traditional or modern style, perhaps elevating an everyday routine is what ‘timeless’ is all about.

Timeless can mean different things to different people. I helped both of these clients make timeless selections for their specific tastes and their specific homes.

These projects were fun because they involved two very different approaches: starting from scratch with a whole new build, and transforming a space while staying within the same footprint.

Photo Ramit Productions

Creating & Capturing Memories

If you’re looking for that extra dash of excitement to make your big event truly unforgettable, Photo Ramit Productions is an absolute must for your vendor list. Here’s why!

FW: You’ve been in the portrait photography business for many years. How did you become interested in the fun of photo booth options?

PHOTO RAMIT: We are a family-run business that began our photography work in Honduras over 20 years ago. The photography venture continued when our family moved to New Jersey, and then to North Carolina in 2003. By 2017, we were looking to expand the business with something novel! We came across the Magic Mirror Photo Booth and were sold. Photo Ramit Productions was the first vendor in the Triad to offer the Magic Mirror Me Photo Booth and the Beauty Vanity Mirror Photo Booth. It took a lot of work to get the Photo Booth side of the business up and running — think installing awesome props and backdrops and setting up décor, to now, multiple interactive photo booth options — but the efforts are so worthwhile!

FW: Can you describe the Magic Mirror Booth for readers who haven’t had the pleasure of seeing it at an event? (And Forsyth Magazines definitely loves the 360-degree Photo Booth!)

PHOTO RAMIT: Our goal is to enhance your special event in a unique, modern, and fun way, while capturing memories that will last a lifetime! Our full-length size Magic Mirror is an open-air photo booth with a user-friendly interface that communicates with guests through a touch screen of colorful animations, and entertaining voice guidance. Guests can take home a 4x6 print-out, and also get their pictures (or gifs!) via text. Our Social Booth, on the other hand, offers still digital photos, and gives guests the option to take a super-fast, 16-photo burst mode within four seconds. The burst is instantly converted into a short video that plays in forward and reverse mode, creating a never-ending loop of one-of-a-kind digital videos! Added to our repertoire in 2021, the 360-degree Photo Booth is our newest offering, and tons of fun! Guests stand on a platform while a camera rotates around them as they stand, pose, and dance. The outcome is a glam, high-quality video clip.

FW: What are some ways guests can customize their prints at an event?

PHOTO RAMIT: There are so many ways to customize the experience, from special props, to wrapping the Magic Mirror Photo Booth to match a theme (we once wrapped the booth to look like a red telephone box!), and creative backdrops. For prints, we work with clients to personalize the photo template to match their event (i.e., color, theme, names, hashtags, date, etc.).

FW: What are some of your most popular props for weddings?

PHOTO RAMIT: We have quite a few! If we had to pick the most popular prop category, we would have to say a “money” prop! We even have a money gun that people love to use with the 360-degree photo booth. We take pride in our highquality props, and love having so many different options.

FW: How large is your staff?

PHOTO RAMIT: We have seven wonderful employees who help run the show! Some work behind the scenes, managing bookings and working with our clients before their event to customize their experience, while others are booth attendants.

FW: What inspires you most about being part of such an upbeat business, and providing wonderful keepsakes for some of life’s best events?

PHOTO RAMIT: Our greatest joy is our family and our friends — who are like family! We love spending time with others, as well as serving others to ensure they are having a good time. Being part of our clients’ special moments is something we never take for granted. It’s such a special business to be in — to provide and capture fun moments — and we have the best clients who make our job so fun!

How to Find Healing on Father’s Day

Whatever the circumstances are, know you are not alone if Father’s Day is a difficult holiday to endure. While the third Sunday in June is often spent honoring fatherhood, this day may bring about a slew of complicated emotions and memories for many.

Father’s Day may be stirring up big feelings surrounding grieving the loss of your own father, reliving the hardship of an absent, abusive, or incarcerated father, suffering the loss of a child or even the longing to see you or your partner become a father. It’s important to remember that whatever feelings you may be facing are valid and you deserve to find your own moments of healing this Father’s Day.

IDENTIFY YOUR TRIGGERS

When you are struggling with some of the things mentioned above, they are typically beneath the surface most days, but on a holiday where the focus is on fatherhood, it can become nearly impossible to ignore them. Taking time to really identify your triggers for falling too deeply into your emotions or being forced to concentrate on the things you aren’t ready to go through can be incredibly helpful. If you know that by going out to eat you’ll be bombarded with families that day, perhaps eat a nice home cooked meal instead or order in. If you know that sitting at church on Father’s Day Sunday is going to make you uncomfortable and overly emotional, maybe you tune in online instead or skip service that weekend.

ALLOW YOURSELF TO GRIEVE

Sometimes those big bottled up feelings need to come out, and it’s completely fine to give yourself permission to do just that. While it’s important to know what triggers you want to avoid, it’s just as important to allow yourself to be in spaces that you feel safe to sit

with your emotions and mental load even if it’s heavy. Find people in your life that you trust to talk openly with about the things you are processing, whether it’s a loved one or a counselor. The worst thing you can do is feel guilty or selfish for needing to share your experiences around fatherhood and the unique perspective and grief you may be housing inside of you. Remember that it’s ok to be sad or even angry.

HIGHLIGHT THE POSITIVE RELATIONSHIPS IN YOUR LIFE

No one person will ever replace the father you are missing but leaning into the positive relationships that you are surrounded by can have a very healing effect. Remind yourself that you are not alone and take a few intentional moments to practice gratitude for the healthy male and female relationships you have. Think about the ones who you can count on beyond measure and the ones who have possibly even been there during the loss or heavy burdens you’ve experienced when it comes to your feelings around Father’s Day.

LET GO OF EXPECTATIONS

Some years may hit harder than others. In fact, your own emotional threshold may surprise you where one Father’s Day you are stronger than you thought, while others feel like an unexpected punch to the gut. Don’t put expectations on yourself this Father’s Day and instead tell yourself that however you feel throughout the day is acceptable and what you need to express. Lean into whatever coping tools help you most, take your mind off things that you can, and do something just for you that day if you can, such as going for a walk at the park, eating a favorite meal, watching a movie that has great memories around it, etc.

Bring the Inside Out

There is an air of excitement and optimism with all the new fabrics and furnishings available for your outdoor plans this year. It certainly has me looking forward to getting outside, and embracing all that the season has to offer. We are always inspired to create new looks for our clients to enhance the joy of spending time with family and friends, or as a peaceful retreat in your own backyard.

June DeLugas Interiors is ready to introduce fresh ideas for your deck, patio, sunroom, or garden oasis. The key to decorating any outdoor space is treating it just like your home’s interior. With a spark of inspiration, such as a new and fresh fabric, we begin to imagine the outdoor space. Through a collaborative design process, we create custom environments that celebrate your personal style and comfort.

Tip: Outdoor Sunbrella fabrics are easy to clean. Manufacturers recommend l cup bleach + l/4 cup mild liquid soap + 1 gallon of warm water. Spray the solution on the entire area and allow to soak into fabric for 15 minutes. Rinse thoroughly to remove all soap residue. Clean the entire surface with soft cloth and then air dry.

It is that simple with Sunbrella fabrics: the miracle fabric made in North Carolina. Let your outdoors become your oasis!

God Bless,

The Power of Walking Together: Creating a Walk Club

for Health and Happiness

Walking is an excellent way to improve physical and mental health, and joining or starting a walk club is a great way to make walking a social activity. A walk club can help you stay motivated, meet new people, and explore new neighborhoods and trails. Let’s explore the benefits of a walk club and how to get started in your own neighborhood or area.

FIVE IDEAS ON HOW TO GET STARTED

1. Find a Club

The first step in starting a walk club is to find a group of likeminded people who are interested in walking. You can start by asking friends, family, and neighbors if they are interested in joining a club, or by searching online for local walking groups. You can also check with your local community center, fitness center, or library to see if they offer walking groups or classes.

2. Choose a Schedule

Once you have found a group, you will need to decide on a schedule for walking. This could be a weekly, biweekly, or monthly event, depending on the availability and preferences of the group members. You will also need to decide on a time and location for each walk.

3. Set Goals

Setting goals can help motivate the group and provide a sense of accomplishment. You could set a goal to walk a certain number of miles or minutes each week or month, or to walk a particular trail or route. You could also participate in walking events or charity walks as a group.

4. Stay Safe

FOUR BENEFITS OF A WALK CLUB

1. Improved Physical Health

Walking is a low-impact exercise that can help improve cardiovascular health, strengthen muscles and bones, and reduce the risk of chronic diseases such as diabetes, heart disease, and obesity. Walking regularly can also improve flexibility and balance, which can reduce the risk of falls and injuries.

2. Better Mental Health

Walking is also beneficial for mental health. It can reduce stress and anxiety, improve mood, and boost self-esteem. Walking with others can provide social support and increase feelings of connection and belonging.

3. Motivation and Accountability

Joining a walk club can help you stay motivated and accountable. When you know others are counting on you to show up, it can be easier to stick to a walking routine. The group can also provide encouragement and support when you face challenges or setbacks.

4. New Experiences

Walking with a club can also provide opportunities to explore new neighborhoods and trails that you might not have discovered on your own. This can make walking more interesting and exciting, and can provide a sense of adventure and exploration.

Safety should be a top priority when walking with a group. Make sure that everyone wears comfortable shoes and appropriate clothing for the weather conditions. You should also bring water, sunscreen, and insect repellent. Be aware of your surroundings and follow basic safety guidelines such as walking on designated paths and trails, staying in well-lit areas, and avoiding isolated areas.

5.

Have Fun

Most importantly, walking should be enjoyable and fun! Walking with a group can provide a sense of camaraderie and social connection, and can make the experience more enjoyable. Take the time to chat with your fellow walkers, enjoy the scenery, and appreciate the benefits of being outside and active.

Joining or starting a local walk club can provide many benefits, including improved physical and mental health, motivation and accountability, new experiences, and social connection. To get started, find a group of like-minded individuals, choose a schedule, set goals, stay safe, and most importantly, have fun! Walking can be a simple yet powerful way to improve your overall health and well-being, and a local walk club can make it even more enjoyable.

#1 - Introduce Yourself- more than once!

You’d think if someone signed up to be on your email list then they know who you and your business are! Think again. Just because they signed up for your list, it doesn’t mean they fully grasp who you really are - especially in relation to them! Creating an introduction email that lets your audience know things like who you are, who you serve, where you’re located, your origin story, what problem(s) your business helps solve and/or how you’re different from your competition are great places to start! What can they expect in their inbox from you? Include photos of yourself, your team, your brick and mortar, etc. Your audience is more likely to stick around when they know who you are and how you serve them.

#2 - Favorite On-Niche Resources

Here’s the truth: you know you’re here to sell things and they know you’re here to sell things. Your email marketing, however, isn’t about selling things. Go figure, right? Your audience wants value and that starts with your expertise and guidance. Compiling your favorite resources is the perfect way to share value. Think about favorite resources your business offers but also favorites from other brands; interesting podcasts, helpful blog posts, instagram accounts you love, mind blowing pinterest pins, etc. Show up without selling to your email list and instead, share something valuable you know they are interested in and can be educational, entertaining or encouraging.

#3 - Stories Worth Sharing

Since the dawn of time, storytelling has been one of our most powerful tools as humans to create connection. What stories are worth sharing in your business? Think about experiences in your business and your life, even your day-to-day that are relatable, entertaining or can serve as an example of something your audience needs to hear. How can you tell it in a way that puts your audience in your shoes or creates that common thread between

This column is meant to serve as a resource for readers who seek inspiration and knowledge for building their own small business brands. Through actionable advice, find the encouragement to help you keep living your life with hustle and heart.

you? Stories we tell as a brand don’t have to be crazy exciting or drenched in big emotion, just simple shared experiences can bring them in and hook them into reading your emails because it speaks to them. Stories will always be one of your most popular forms of content on social media, but it works the same in emails!

#4

- Freebie or Exclusive Discount

Business owners worry that giving away the goods for free will result in a lack of sales, but it couldn’t be further from the truth. Showing them value up front, without a price tag, helps them get an idea of what it’s like to work with you or purchase your products. The goal here is to send emails with freebies that are specific and enticing to your email list’s interests and problems. This does not mean giving away what you do or sell for free, but creating specific free offers that give a taste of the amazing value you offer. Don’t overcomplicate this, whatever you choose can always evolve over time and you can try different things!

#5 - Guest Spot or Collaboration

Think of this as the non-sleazy but super efficient way to name drop. You want to build your reputation as an expert in your industry and show your audience the knowledge and value you bring to the table? Send emails to your list that share your latest and greatest guest spots and collaborations with other brands. This could be a podcast interview, blog post, partnered sale, collaborative instagram reel or anything else. This not only helps build up your reputation as a trusted source but you’re helping introduce your audience to new resources and content they may need and love!

HUSTLE & HEART CHALLENGE

This month, challenge yourself to review this list and commit to working 1-2 of these emails into your email marketing strategy! Think about what your goals are in your business this month and which emails can help support them and market the things you want in front of your audience.

Cutting Edge Aesthetic SurgeryLooking to the Future

Nationally ranked, with a focus on experience, outcome, and safety, the professionals at Atrium Health Wake Forest Baptist Department of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery are succeeding at their vital two-part mission.“Providing cutting edge cosmetic and reconstructive surgery in state-of-the-art facilities, by surgeons recognized regionally, nationally, and internationally, is the first priority,” says Dr. Lisa David, Professor and Chair of the Department of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery in Winston-Salem, North Carolina.

This talented staff of experts is also training future generations of surgeons in the field of plastic surgery, and many of the other providers in the region

were trained here. Their reputation is based on their status as pioneers and innovators, positioned at the cutting edge of new techniques and technologies.

With a staff that’s fellowship-trained, and equipped to care for even the most complex cases, being a patient of Atrium Health Wake Forest Baptist means having a large group with expertise that spans every aspect of plastic surgery. Their collaborative philosophy allows them to address a wide range of surgical goals and expectations — work that is often life-changing!

Aesthetician Elizabeth Farris began her career as a massage therapist 15 years ago. She then added her aesthetician license to that, creating the most wonderful combination of facials and massage!

“My most requested treatments are the Luxury Facial which includes a facial with extractions, hand, arm and shoulder massage, but my favorite treatment is the Chemical Peel. I find them to be the most effective and make the biggest immediate visual difference in the skin’s appearance,” she says. “Massage is offered as part of my facial treatments, where a patient can add a 15-, 20- or 30-minute massage to any facial.”

She adds that physician support is abundant at Atrium Health, and providers are recommending the need for facials and a daily skincare regimen – including medical-grade products and prescription-strength ingredients – to their patients.

“Being able to enjoy a spa experience in a medical practice is such a benefit,” says Elizabeth. “The patient can go from a relaxing massage to a facial and stay on the same ‘heated’ table with the same therapist without changing rooms. It’s amazing the difference a facial, peel and skincare regimen with the right products can truly make – patients truly glow inside and out!”

DR. LISA DAVID

Cosmetic Surgery, Chair Department of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, Pediatric Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, Director of the Cleft and Craniofacial Center

“I had early exposure to expert plastic surgeons, due to being born with a cleft lip and palate,” Dr. David explains. “My surgeon was my first medical role model, and his care led me to want to do the same for others. As I got more experience in the medical field, it only served to further my passion to care for those with congenital, traumatic, and other plastic surgical problems.”

As she now guides weight loss patients (i.e., body contouring), she’s continually inspired by a patient’s hard work and dedication to get to this point.

“The challenge with weight loss is so many areas of the body are impacted, and cannot all be addressed with a single surgery,” she explains. “It is a journey, so helping them focus on the end goal is important. They are some of the happiest patients I care for, and helping them finish this last part of their goal inspires me!”

Following her B.S. degree from Indiana Wesleyan University, and medical school at Indiana University School of Medicine, Dr. David did her general surgery residency in Ann Arbor Michigan, a plastic surgery residency at Wake Forest, and a craniofacial fellowship in Sweden. She also earned an MBA from Wake Forest University School of Business in 2019.

Dr. Chris Runyan attended the University of Cincinnati for medical school, and also completed a PhD program studying embryonic development.“That led me to the plastic surgery specialty, as over 50% of all birth defects involve the face and hands — both areas treated by plastic surgeons,” he explains. “After residency I pursued a craniofacial surgery fellowship at NYU for specialty training in complex facial reconstruction. Working with world-renowned experts, I participated in a full-face transplant, and developed expertise in complex facial aesthetic and jaw (orthognathic) surgery.”

Dr. Runyan moved to Winston-Salem in 2016, to join Atrium Health, and says he sees little difference between facial reconstructive and cosmetic surgery.“The end goal for both is to restore a patient to better function and appearance,” he says. “Whether reconstructing a wound, restoring symmetry in the setting of facial paralysis, or tightening aged skin, I listen to the patient’s expectations for normalcy and improved function, then develop a tailored treatment and surgical plan to achieve their goals.” Rhinoplasty, blepharoplasty (eyelid lift), and facelifts are his most common requested procedures, and also reconstructive and cosmetic orthognathic surgery, which changes the bony foundation of the face and jaws — often used in combination with orthodontia.

A Professor of Surgery in the Department of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, Dr. Pestana received his medical degree from the University of Miami School of Medicine, and did his residency in general surgery at the University of Miami Jackson Memorial Medical Center.

“During my general surgery training, I completed research fellowships in transplantation immunology and trauma medicine,” he explains. “I completed a residency in plastic and reconstructive surgery from Duke University Medical Center, and also completed rotations in hand surgery and microsurgery at the University of Louisville and The Christine M. Kleinert Institute for Hand and Microsurgery.”

Dr. Pestana is passionate about breast surgery — including both cosmetic and reconstructive procedures. “Seeing people struggling with their appearance and then, after undergoing these procedures, observing their life changing for the better, is inspiring. They feel restored and confident in their everyday activities,” he explains. “I consider it a privilege to participate in their care.”

Breast augmentation, breast reduction or breast lift, and the combination of the two (called mastopexy augmentation) make up most of his work, but he also performs revisions of previous breast procedures and adjusts breast changes that may happen over time, or with weight changes.

“Eyelid/eyebrow/forehead (periorbital) surgery is one of many procedures I perform as a plastic and reconstructive surgeon,” says Dr. Katz. “I was drawn to plastic surgery by its creativity, variety, problem solving, and potential to change lives. I’ve wanted to be a plastic surgeon for nearly as long as I can remember!”

His focus is removing excess skin from upper eyelids, treating skin wrinkles of the lower eyelid and cheek region, and lifting the eyebrows and forehead to help treat what is often perceived as a tired or angry appearance.

Dr. Katz graduated from Duke University and the University of Michigan Medical School, and did his surgical training at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center.

“The privilege of having someone’s trust to perform surgery on them is humbling,” he adds. “Helping a patient re-claim their ‘inner youthfulness’ — both physically and mentally — is exceptionally gratifying.”

Now a board-certified plastic surgeon at Atrium Health Wake Forest Baptist, Dr. Calder worked in general surgery prior to pursuing specialized training in plastic surgery at Wake Forest. He then stayed on as faculty. “My interests within plastic surgery are broad, and include reconstructive surgery in addition to cosmetic surgery of the face, breast, and body,” he explains. “Rhinoplasty is of particular interest to me for several reasons. Whether for cosmetic or functional purposes, there is an appealing degree of precision involved when approaching surgery of the nose. Small changes can have a tremendous impact on the overall appearance of the face.”

Dr. Calder feels a tremendous sense of satisfaction when a patient can breathe normally for the first time in decades, or has a new sense of self-confidence.

“Patients today are more informed and often desire subtle changes to very specific anatomic portions of their nose, including softening the curve of a bump on the nose (dorsal hump), altering the shape and size of the nasal tip, or repositioning of the nasal bones,” he adds. “While many patients present for cosmetic reasons alone, there are also many patients who have breathing issues or headaches related to nasal airway obstruction or deviated septum.”

One of the largest academic systems in the country, Atrium Health Wake Forest Baptist Department of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery is located at 1450 Professional Park Drive, Suite 300, Winston-Salem, NC, 336-713-0255.

TAKE BACK YOUR POWER by Learning to Say “NO”

Whether it is saying “yes” to social activities you have no interest in or taking on more work than you can handle, most of us at one time or another have struggled with saying “no.” What are some of the reasons that cause us to hesitate to say this small word that carries so much significance? Read on to learn more about why we don’t say it, why we should say it more often, and what can happen if we continue to put ourselves and our needs on the back burner.

Human interactions are reliant on mutual benefit, which makes us feel that not being agreeable to a social request will threaten our bonds with people who are important to us. Social connection and a feeling that we belong are among our most fundamental needs. When we say “no,” there is a likelihood that we may feel we are threatening our relationships and feelings of connection. The fear of saying “no” also stems from the desire to avoid conflict, confrontation or hurting someone’s feelings.

Not too surprisingly, women struggle with saying “no” more often than men. The reasons can range from not wanting to make someone angry, to protecting the egos of the people they care about. In addition, women are socialized to value other people’s needs and feelings above their own. They are taught to be people pleasers and therefore, they often tend to say “yes” to nearly everything asked of them even if it overloads, overwhelms, or exhausts them.

Although saying “yes” in the short term may allow us to avoid the discomfort of confrontation, the long-term toll can cause resentment, chronic stress, and eventually burn out. These things can then manifest into chronic anxiety and depression.

It’s important for everyone to learn to take control of their lives and establish boundaries, as they learn to protect themselves by saying “no.” Having the ability to say “no” firmly and without hesitation shows that you are in the driver’s seat of your own life and it empowers you to protect your precious resources…your time, energy and possibly even your sanity.

More helpful ideas for how to say “no” firmly and gracefully:

DETAILS OPTIONAL

Unless you choose to provide details, people don’t need to know your personal business and why you’re saying “no.” In fact, you don’t even need a real reason to say “no” if you don’t want to do something! Let that sink in. Practice turning someone down on their request without making an excuse.

NO APOLOGIES

If you struggle with people-pleasing, you may find that you feel guilty when you say “no” to someone. You may even feel that they won’t like you anymore or that they’ll be mad at you. This can cause you to apologize when you’re turning down a request. Practice NOT apologizing. You don’t need to.

THINK ABOUT IT FIRST

It can be a good idea to delay before giving an answer so that you have the opportunity to think about what you could be agreeing to. Think it through and determine how much of a time and energy commitment is really being asked of you.

ESTABLISH YOUR PRIORITIES

Thinking about what your priorities are can help you decide what you are willing to agree to and what you don’t have time for. Establishing priorities and saying “yes” with intention allows you to give your best self to the areas that are most important to you instead of spreading yourself too thin by trying to be everything to everyone.

PRACTICE

Saying “no” doesn’t always feel as easy as it sounds. That’s why it can be helpful to practice when you’re alone. Rehearse your different answers. Practice saying things like, “Let me check my schedule and get back to you.” and “I’m not able to commit to that right now.”

Dr. Joshua Katz, D.C., and Dr. Jessica Katz, D.C., are both genuinely inspired by being part of a patient’s healthcare journey. Always offering a positive, professional atmosphere at their Kernersville location, the team is now thrilled to introduce patients to their new facility in Winston-Salem that’s dedicated solely to treating patients who suffer with peripheral neuropathy.

“We are excited to be in our new location because it helps us fulfill our personal mission to provide exceptional healthcare that empowers our community to optimize their health, and experience the best quality of life!” says Dr. Jessica. “By branching out into Winston-Salem, we will be able to serve a much larger community.”

The doctors created Aligned Health & Wellness to offer every peripheral neuropathy sufferer the chance to truly heal and enjoy life again — without the fear of surgery or possibly harmful medications. Eliminating pain is the first step in leading neuropathy patients back to a full life!

If you’re currently suffering from neuropathy, you may have sadly given up outdoor activities like gardening or enjoying long walks, and you’ll be all too familiar with these potential symptoms:

* Numbness, tingling, burning, or itching in extremities

* Dizziness while standing or while moving from sitting to standing

* Muscle spasms, cramping, or uncontrolled twitching

* Shooting or stabbing pains, which may be worse at night

* Loss of coordination or balance

* Hot or cold hands and feet, or changes in skin color

The goal at Aligned Health & Wellness is identifying and treating the underlying cause of your pain, in order to alleviate these symptoms, and safely manage the condition. Think of it as targeted healing with maximum relief!

One of the most important things that sets Aligned apart from other practices is that the treatments they design for patients aren’t merely to suppress symptoms. Patients at Aligned are actually reversing their neuropathy.

“We provide customized care that focuses on the root cause of the patient’s problem, as well as the ability to maintain their quality of life. We believe that our patients’ goals should be our goals!” says Dr. Jessica.

And they love celebrating patient results!

“My feet were numb, I was having trouble driving, my balance was off, and the burning sensation was terrible. My doctors were telling me that if the Lyrica didn’t help there wasn’t anything else that could be done.”

“Aligned has been a life-saver for me. After a few weeks I could feel my toes again. I could move around better without falling. A few more weeks went by, and I had more improvements! I am ecstatic I can drive. This therapy has been exactly what I needed, and I would recommend this treatment to anyone that has problems with neuropathy.” —Shirley O.

“I was struggling with the numbness in my feet. It made walking difficult, and I was very uncomfortable going up and down the stairs. ”

“After six months in the program I’d say my feet are 90% better than what they were before starting out. I don’t take as long going up and down the stairs, and I feel more confident walking — plus I am able to walk longer periods of time.” —Sandra

Toning is a step often missed by many in their skin care routine. It might seem like one that you can easily skip because it’s just a spray, but these can be amazingly beneficial if you use the right ingredients and you can make one yourself for relatively very little money.

Why should we consider this an essential step in loving our skin? Because it can be extremely healing, moisturizing, and balancing. Whatever your ailment might be, dry skin, sun scorched, break out, reactive, bug bites, there’s a spritz for that.

When should we spritz? After each cleansing, even if you’re in the camp of just splashing your face in the morning with water, spritz after. Never skip it after a deep cleanse and you can spritz anytime during the day, even if you’re wearing make-up. Add a final spritz after your moisturizer to lock everything in! When we cleanse, we are stripping away from our skin, even in the gentlest of cleansing, so we want to spritz back some nutrients and applying these prior to skin care will prep the skin and make the skin care products more effective.

The ingredients of a good toner can be relatively simple. You probably automatically think of some of them when you think of toner but some may surprise you. Witch hazel has been around in our pharmacies since the beginning and long used in folk medicine. This is a powerful plant, a flowering shrub scientifically called Hamamelis Virginiana. It’s native to the United States, Japan, and China. Witch hazel is an astringent, causing the tissue to contract, shrinking pores. It also contains potent anti-inflammatory compounds making it a stellar choice for sensitive skin, break outs or even broken skin.

Apple cider vinegar (ACV) makes a great addition to your spritz. It contains healing enzymes that are great for oily skin, break outs, cuts, razor burn or rashes. You want to use raw ACV so look for that key factor when selecting one. ACV contains malic acid and is antibacterial and antifungal, making it a key component for those particular skin conditions. The malic acid is also an exfoliator, helping increase the skin cell turnover for new, healthy cells!

Toner: An Essential Spritzer

Aloe vera juice - we all know aloe gel is a staple for sunburn in the summer, but in its liquid form, it can easily be spritzed over skin to soothe and heal. Aloe vera is very moisturizing, it contains mucopolysaccharides that bind moisture to the skin as well as bind flaking skin cells together for smoothing dry skin cells. It really packs in humectants that increase moisture levels by attracting water from the air or deep within the skin to the skin’s surface. It is an anti-inflammatory making it a total winner for dry or sensitive skin types. The anti-inflammatory properties are great for reducing redness and are great for aging skin as it increases collagen synthesis! This is what makes it a powerhouse in burn healing.

The base of any toner will be a clean H2O! Water, the essential element of all life, can be good for your skin when it’s mixed with the right ingredients and it’s clean. Purified without any additives will be your best choice, so no reaching for the tap! Check your bottled water, it might surprise you to see that they add back in minerals for taste!

Essential oils are easy to mix into your toners and it only takes a few drops to reap the additional plant power healing benefits. Lavender is perhaps one of the most multifaceted oils available. It’s soothing to your senses and your skin, healing, antiseptic, anti-inflammatory and

smells amazing! This is a great choice for all spritzers, all skin types, and about any ailmentyou can’t go wrong with this one. Frankincense is the great anti-inflammatory powerhouse that is known as the anti-aging oil. It is touted for skin care in assisting with reducing skin sagging, fine lines, and wrinkles, as well as discoloration. Tea tree oil is an infection fighter with antifungal, antiviral and antibacterial properties, making it a great choice for those that may deal with acne.

Here’s a simple recipe if you want to give making your own spritz a try!

• 4 oz Amber Glass Spray Bottle (purchase on Amazon.com two for $8.00)

• 2oz Clean Water

• 1 oz Aloe Vera Juice (purchase on Amazon. com, Lily of the Valley $0.45 per oz)

• 1 oz Witch Hazel (alcohol free)

• 5 drops Lavender Essential Oil

• 5 drops Frankincense Essential Oil

Shake and spritz!

You can store your remaining aloe juice in the fridge to keep it fresh. If you love certain scents, add in essential oils of rose, blue tansy, or whatever oil suits your senses!

Brunch Honors Cancer Survivors

Once you hear the words, ‘You have cancer,’ your world as you know it changes. ‘Normal’ for family and friends goes on, but your life comes to a halt and your journey to beating the disease begins. No matter your path of treatment, the journey to being well again takes a toll, physically, mentally, emotionally, and spiritually. But even after you become a survivor, your life is still forever changed. To recognize the journeys of cancer survivors and celebrate being on the other side of the disease, the American Cancer Society, local vendors, and Special Moments Venue, are partnering for the I Choose Joy Cancer Survivors’ Brunch on April 29th, 2023.

Special Thanks to our Vendors!

Logo, Program, and Table Sign Designer: Soirée by Santana

Sangria and Charcuterie: Sensational Sangria

Cake: Sweet Designs Bakery

Marquee Letters: Alpha-Lit Triad NC

Ana Redfearn, owner and event planner at Special Moments Venue, wanted her space to be used to bring groups together in the community.“During a time of prayer, I felt led to open up Special Moments Venue to groups to give back. My passion for this event was fueled by my interaction with a circle of cancer survivors who were positive, patient, and willing to share the struggles and triumphs of their individual journeys. I wanted to do something to highlight people who have the ability to choose joy in the midst of adversity. That was how the idea for the I Choose Joy brunch started,” said Ana. And there is a special group of ladies who have worked with Ana to make this dream into a reality, including Danielle Sowell, Carolyn Edmond, Jalisa Yountz, and Wiletta Friende.

At the brunch, “The floral arrangements were beautifully done by Green Bee Floral Design and Jodie Brim Creative was our

photographer,” Ana noted. “Kyana Oduro of 24K Event Rentals in Greensboro helped pull things togethers and we had amazing desserts by Asia Grace of A Sensational Delight in Winston-Salem. This event was a good opportunity to build a community amongst the honorees and attendees,” Ana commented.

“The primary goal through the I Choose Joy brunch and event was to shower local cancer survivors with love and create a lovely and joyful atmosphere to truly celebrate all that they’ve so courageously overcome,” said Danielle Sowell, Senior Development Manager with the American Cancer Society. “We had the pleasure of working with Ana Redfearn, owner of Special Moments Venue, to be the venue of this incredible brunch. Our guests were escorted and introduced, followed by a photo with their loved ones in attendance. Then they enjoyed the live entertainment, by Cheers NC, and savored the delicious meal, prepared by Juicy Bird. Our guest speaker, Ray Singleton, singer and songwriter, shared his and his wife, Rosalyn’s, journey through Roz’s cancer and how a video of him serenading Roz went viral, inspiring others. It was a special and unique time to ultimately fellowship with each other.”

Through the I Choose Joy event and her time with cancer survivors Ana has seen that joy is contagious. “We are all going through something in life and sometimes one act of kindness can change lives. To our honorees, Psalms 30:5 says, ‘Weeping may last through the night, but joy comes in the morning!’ It was an honor to be part of this special event,” Ana stated.

FOR FANS OF FOOD!

Twisted Pine

Only three things in life are certain: death, taxes, and the fact that any restaurant opened by local restaurateur Adam Andrews will serve quality menu items in style. When presented with the opportunity to review Twisted Pine in downtown Winston-Salem, I jumped at the chance. Having opened in 2022, Twisted Pine sits at 527 N. Liberty Street, close to other Andrews haunts such as Jeffrey Adams, Dogwood Hops & Crops, The Trophy Room, and brunch hotspot Young Cardinal Café.

Twisted Pine’s bright interior lined with large windows, a large airy bar, and funky wall art adds more flavor to a fully-packed menu. What I love about Adam Andrews’ restaurants is their focus on using locally-sourced and farm-fresh ingredients in their entrees. In fact, according to Twisted Pine’s head chef Daniel, all peppers, tomatoes, zucchini, and squash used in Twisted Pine menu items are grown at Andrews Farm.

Tacos are a girl’s best friend, and what better way to wash down Twisted Pine’s shredded beef Birria Tacos than with a classic margarita on the rocks? Choose your flavor and decide between a sugar, salt, or tajin (chili-lime flavored) rim, and show up for $5 margaritas on Mondays for the best deal. With birria tacos having recently taken social media by storm throughout the country, Twisted Pine has added its own “twist” to the taco with fresh cilantro from its own garden, as well as queso, onion, and consommé. Tortilla shells are first purchased daily from Tortilleria la Esperanza in Clemmons before being drenched in birria fat and grilled on a flat-top.

Twisted Pine offers numerous appetizers that are perfect for sharing, such as Twisted Chips, which consist of house-made potato chips

beneath a layer of delicious queso and pico de gallo. Try the Pulled Pork Wanchos, a pun on “wonton nachos,” for those craving nachos with an Asian flare. Pulled pork in a sweet Asian barbecue sauce layered with wonton chips, Polynesian slaw, and wasabi sour cream is a dish you’re unlikely to find anywhere else in the Triad. Looking for an appetizer with less crunch but just as much cheese? Munch on Fried Cheese Curds dipped in chipotle ranch. Forkable cavatappi pasta-based Mac & Cheese can be topped with meats of your choosing for an additional charge.

For a hefty, handheld meal, I highly recommend the Smoked Bologna sandwich on sourdough bread with fried egg, American cheese, and house sauce, along with your side of choice. Popular sides include house waffle fries and the spicy chilled lo mein salad.

If you’re looking for another tasty cocktail, the Liberty Blitz is a light and refreshing gin-based drink with blackberry, lime, and soda water as a summer refresher. Booze-free beverages abound at Twisted Pine, too, with plenty of fountain sodas available.

To top off the night with something sweet, choose the Key Lime Torte for a tropical feel in Camel City. Large enough to share, the torte sits atop a graham cracker crust and is topped with whipped cream and toasted coconut shreds.

If you haven’t made Twisted Pine part of your weekly routine, you’re missing out. Visit Twisted Pine for dinner Monday through Saturday at 527 N. Liberty St., view the menu online at www. andrewsrestaurantsws.com/twisted-pine-restaurant, and check out the team on Instagram at @twistedpine_ws.

Exceptional Young Women in the Community: Jada Senn

Fourteen-year-old Jada Senn has been an active member of LEAD Girls of NC for four years, learning to boost her confidence and also learning new hobbies. LEAD (Learning Everyday Accomplishing Dreams) Girls of NC is an organization that believes every girl deserves a chance to be seen, heard, valued, and equipped. Knowing that their resources do not match their limitless potential, LEAD’s mission is to provide preteen girls with tools and resources to become change makers and leaders in their communities. With Jada’s commitment and dedication to the mission of LEAD, she has become a LEAD Ambassador within this past year. LEAD Ambassadors must be in high school and have completed at least two years of LEAD programming. Ambassadors serve on organization committees, assist with LEAD sessions, and aid in community outreach events. Through their service, they apply skills learned in LEAD’s flagship program in order to gain deeper knowledge and leadership experience.

What inspires Jada most about her involvement with LEAD is having the opportunity to see her peers finding new hobbies, developing and honing effective communication skills, and increasing their self-esteem. Being a role model for younger girls and seeing them discover who they are is the most rewarding aspect of being a LEAD Ambassador for Jada.

Volunteering at LEAD’s 2022 Expo greatly impacted Jada, as it was an opportunity for her to see how people interact and enjoy LEAD as an organization. The Expo’s classes were informative and engaging, and allowed Jada to meet author Chrystal Giles inperson – someone she finds to be an enormous inspiration.

Outside of LEAD, Jada volunteers with First Christian Community Church to feed those experiencing homelessness, and is a busy high school student who participates in cheerleading. She aspires to one day become a criminal justice lawyer to help defend individuals against crimes they didn’t commit. She also expresses an interest in becoming a cardiologist to help others gain a fresh start and healthier heart. These are commendable career choices that involve helping others, and laudable goals no matter which route she chooses!

When she isn’t busy with school, volunteering, or cheerleading, Jada also works part-time at Subway. Although she is surrounded by sandwiches while working, she still finds an appetite for local Johnny B.’s chicken alfredo and corn muffins. As she completes high school, she will continue focusing on her involvement in bettering the community and following her dreams, one of which is to vacation in Paris someday.

Interested in becoming involved with LEAD Girls of NC? Apply online and read more about LEAD’s programs and values at www. leadgirls.org.

On the Road Again: North Dakota

Day 1: Arrive in Fargo, Head to Grand Forks

Being a rectangular state, North Dakota is easy to tour if you don’t mind a bit of lengthy driving. Summertime is the best time to visit, as colder months can bring harsh weather to the near-Canadian state, making getting around difficult. I highly recommend flying into Fargo’s Hector International Airport (FAR) and booking a rental car to be returned at the same location. From Fargo, drive an hour and 15 minutes north to Grand Forks to spend the night, in order to best position yourself for the rest of the week’s activities. Grand Forks is notorious for the Original Red Pepper restaurant, which is home of the legendary and well-known “Grinder” sandwich, often topped with taco meat, cheese, special sauces, and other deli meats. One of my good friends Brian attended college in North Dakota and continues to have Red Pepper ship Grinder sandwiches to him in North Carolina on occasion (for a hefty fee, of course!).

Day 2: Drive to Devil’s Lake

From Grand Forks, a popular fishing and summer recreation destination is Devil’s Lake, making it a great location to arrive early in the day and spend the night after a day of fishing. Walleye fish are commonly found in this area, with fishing charter tours filling up quickly during the summer months. Perch Eyes is notorious for its fishing charters, providing bookers with a 20-foot boat stacked with bait, fishing poles, tackle, life jackets, and a licensed guide to the lake. Perch Eyes employees also clean catches, so no need to get down and dirty with the fish you catch and plan to eat. It’s best to book ahead to find availability on the dates you’ll be in Devil’s Lake, so visit www.percheyes.com to read more about fishing charters and how to make a reservation.

Day 3: Arrive in Medora

The tiny town of Medora is an excellent spot to visit the western side of the state. A lengthy drive from Devil’s Lake, the road trip taken to Medora gives visitors plenty of opportunities to see all of North Dakota’s landscape by car. There are not many accommodations to choose from, and since summer travelers fill up hotels and rentals quickly, book as far in advance as possible. Medora is often a tourist’s gateway to Theodore Roosevelt National Park, but also offers mini golf, a point-to-point zipline, and a lazy river to those who want to relax before sightseeing.

Day 4: Theodore Roosevelt National Park

With a blend of history and nature, Theodore Roosevelt National Park offers park visitors the opportunity to see North Dakota’s prairie lands and badlands. Additionally, lucky visitors have the opportunity of sneaking peeks of bison, elk, deer, bobcats, porcupines, and pronghorns, which are the second fastest land animal in the world (with cheetahs coming in first place). Pack plenty of snacks and sunscreen, as sun in the badlands can be intense during the summer.

Day 5: Leave Medora, Overnight in Bismarck

After checking out of your Medora accommodation, break up the lengthy drive back to Fargo by spending the night in the city of Bismarck, the state capital. Spend additional time outdoors along the Missouri River, visit the North Dakota Heritage Center and State Museum, and stop by Fort Abraham Lincoln State Park during your short time in the city.

Day 6: Return to Fargo

In preparation for your flight home the following day, spend your sixth night in Fargo and grab a beer at Fargo Brewing Company downtown. The Toasted Frog is a North Dakota local eatery serving its famous Fried Cheesy Pickles with a side of sriracha. Another popular Toasted Frog dish is the Buffalo Chicken Lavosh, which is an unleavened flat bread topped with grilled buffalo chicken, Havarti cheese, and other toppings. Finally, walk along the Red River to burn off extra calories consumed before heading to bed.

Day 7: Depart FAR

On your final day, return your rental car to FAR and catch your flight back to your home state. Be sure to eat a full meal ahead of your lengthy flight across the country, and hopefully catch a peek of more of the country’s beauty out the plane window.

As one of the more challenging states to write about for the On the Road Again series, North Dakota’s tourist hotspots are lesser known than other states’ throughout the country. Here’s how to spend seven days in the Peace Garden State.

with Chillax Tracks & Rev Up Pick Me Ups SONGS

Wherever your summer plans may take you or even if you’re sticking close to home, here are some summer song suggestions to celebrate the hottest season of the year.

“Soak Up the Sun” - Sheryl Crow

A good mood tune when you want everyone to lighten up, Sheryl Crow’s hit will have you feeling like you can do anything that comes your way and have some fun in the sun. So, shade those pretty peepers with some fun sunnies and enjoy soaking up the sun (UV protection and sunbrellas are advised).

“Summer” (The Four Seasons) - Vivaldi

A classic violin concerto (along with the other 3 seasons), inspired by nature poetry, “Summer” depicts a shepherd and his flock caught in a sudden rainstorm.

“Watermelon Sugar” - Harry Styles

An essential summer song with a summer feeling you want to breathe in. No summer should be without a fruit-alicious fix of juicy watermelon and strawberries.

“Summertime” - George Gershwin

This soulful summertime classic is from Porgy and Bess, a memorable musical folk opera. Ironically, the livin’ was anything but easy, but its melodies are moving and express evocative emotions. This lullaby, sung by a poor young mother, reassures her offspring and paints a dreamlike picture to offer a temporary departure from grim reality. Don’t miss the classic tender duet version by Ella Fitzgerald and Louis Armstrong and also Janis Joplin’s sassy and soulful version from the 60s, credited with putting jazz back on the charts and into the collective consciousness.

“Neon Indian” - Deadbeat Summer

If indie’s your thang, enjoy this funkadelic synth pop tune. Whatever your age, celebrate nostalgic lazy summer days of your youth and make the most of summer.

“A Cicada’s Song” - Susan B.B. Schabacker

As warm winds turn cool and we make our way into autumn, the cicadas of summer sing their last song. Reflective and nostalgic, this song reminisces about a love that’s distant, but hasn’t faded from memory. “And, you’re always on my mind. You say I’m like a child of the wind, whispering from within. You are still on my mind.”

“La Mer (Beyond the Sea)” - Charles Trenet

A reflective love song with imagery-laden lyrics, reminiscing about the beauty and mystique of the sea. Add this summerish song to your playlist whether you’re cooking or having a picnic, solo or in a sea of people, inland or by the sea. And, there’s nothing quite so romantic as a slow dance with your love by candlelight.

“Seaside” - The Kooks

A light-hearted, romantically reflective acoustic song to get you in the mood on your way to the beach or to chillax wherever you may be, whether poolside, seaside, or listening to ocean waves through your headphones/earbuds. Whether or not you fall in love by the seaside, you can always fall in love with the seaside!

“Summertime Sadness” - Lana Del Rey

Chillax to this catchy tune, whether you’re pool or ocean side with a cocktail or mocktail in hand, or grilling out at the park. Great for getting ready on date night, donning that red dress and piling your hair into a beauty queen style updo.

“Cruel Summer” - Ace of Base

Cool off this hot summer with this cool tune by Swedish pop group Ace of Base. Sunbathe, prop your feet up or burn calories dancing to this fusion of genres including euro disco, Motown, and dance.

“Under The Boardwalk” - The Drifters

Embrace your ears with the perfect pairing for the beach bound. Bored? No need to feel boarded up. Go for a leisurely walk along the boardwalk. Have fun and celebrate summer love, soaking up sun, sand, and surf!

“Rock Lobster” - The B-52’s

Boost your mood with this party worthy pick-me-up ‘60s shagadelic southern new wave style. Shed some clothes or don a bikini and slather on the sunscreen so you don’t turn the color of a lobster. Head to the coast for fresh catches or over to the seafood counter at your local grocery store to enjoy a dish of shellfish. Try a shellfish medley by the bucket with baked potatoes on the side (that really could’ve been baked in the sun).

LET’S TALK ABOUT STRESS!

“Stressed” is a common response to those who ask how we are feeling in this world we live in. Sometimes we have lived with underlying stress for so long, we don’t know any other way to be and assume it is normal.

In this month’s Clean Living, I want to educate you on: cortisol, our main stress hormone, the types of stress, and most importantly, things you can do to improve the way stress impacts your body.

What is cortisol?

Cortisol is the main stress hormone produced in our adrenal glands (two small glands that sit on top of our kidneys). Cortisol modulates inflammation, regulates blood sugar and blood pressure, and plays a role in our “fight or flight” response.

Cortisol is an anti-inflammatory. You may have taken prednisone in the past to help with pain or skin issues like eczema or psoriasis. It also helps regulate blood sugar. If your blood sugar drops too low, cortisol will raise it. In addition, it plays a role in digestion, assisting in the metabolism of protein, carbs and fats.

We don’t want too much or too little cortisol and we want it to be higher in the morning and decrease as the day progresses.

• Symptoms of low cortisol: fatigue, pain, inflammation, anxiety, hypoglycemia, insomnia, cravings for foods, low thyroid function, and low libido

• Symptoms of excess cortisol (some are similar to low): a compromised immune system, slow wound healing, elevated blood pressure and blood sugar, disrupted sleep, increased cravings, insomnia, and cognitive decline

What are the main sources of stress/cortisol dysregulation?

Perceived Stress: feelings of anxiety, depression, grief, guilt and fear; mental and emotional factors relating to lack of control, burnout, and relationships circadian rhythm imbalances: sleep issues, caffeine, light and dark disruptions, shift work

Blood Sugar Dysregulation: excess consumption of low-nutrient carbohydrates (i.e. anything in a box, package or bag with multiple ingredients), low fiber, food sensitivities, stress eating, insulin resistance, obesity, low physical activity

Inflammation: infectious disease, arthritis, cardiovascular disease, allergies, atopic disease, consuming foods sensitive to, leaky gut

What can you do to improve stress?

Perceived Stress

You may not be able to change the stressors in your life (i.e. caregiver to parents and/or kids) but you can change your response to these stressors. Taking time out of your day doing things you love, breathing exercises like box breathing, being in nature, yoga, exercise, and talk therapy can all improve your response to stress.

Circadian Rhythm

A super easy and free way to improve circadian rhythm function is to take advantage of the sun. Try to get morning sunlight first thing in the morning. This will increase cortisol (which is what we want in the morning) and decrease melatonin. As the day progresses, we want cortisol to go in a downward slope and melatonin to slowly rise for bedtime. One to two hours before bed, reduce your screen exposure from phone, TV, tablets, and computers. The blue light emitted from these devices mimic the sun. There are now settings and software that will remove the blue light from your screens. My favorite is f.lux for my computer and using night mode for my phone. I also wear blue blocking glasses at night.

Blood Sugar

First off, greatly reduce or remove processed foods (foods in a box, package or bag with multiple ingredients). Prioritize protein at each meal along with lots of color from above ground vegetables and low sugar fruits (i.e. berries of all varieties) and healthy fats like olive oil, avocados, nuts and seeds. Eat three meals a day without snacking in-between.

Inflammation

In my opinion, improving the above can help with inflammation. In addition, it may be helpful to do a food sensitivity test to see if there are foods you have regularly that you are sensitive to. Keep in mind, this is not an allergy test where you would have an immediate reaction to a certain food. This lab would be testing for sensitivities. You could also try a gluten and dairy free diet for 4-8 weeks to see if symptoms improve.

As human beings, we were built to handle acute stressors (i.e. running from a predator). We weren’t meant to have the perpetual chronic stress of modern society.

Glass Ball Theory

First spoken about in a 1991 commencement speech at Georgia Tech by the former CEO of Coca-Cola, Bryan Dyson, the Glass Ball theory was first known as the “Five Balls of Life”. Dyson said there are five balls in life that you juggle which represent work, family, health, friends, and spirit. He continues to elaborate that the work ball is rubber, and therefore will bounce back if dropped. The other four balls, family, health, friends and spirit, are glass and as such will shatter if dropped.

This is a great sentiment on prioritization, but I would argue that there needs to be more flexibility within the glass ball theory. The writer Nora Roberts discussed it in an interview as a response to the ever dreaded question on how she managed her career and having children. Roberts had the same basic theory as Dyson, but without the strictness of only having five balls and setting concrete assignments to the balls.

Flexibility within the glass ball theory often looks like acknowledging that life categories can change in what type of ball they are depending on the circumstance and timing. There are obviously many times when family is the biggest of the glass balls, but there are also times when certain aspects of family make it a rubber ball that it’s okay to briefly drop in order to catch a health ball, or even a work ball.

signing your child up for summer care, it is a big mess to clean up and deal with. However, if we focus on that glass ball and drop a rubber ball, such as remembering to pick up milk from the store on your way home – the rubber ball is much easier to deal with. Sometimes we need to remind ourselves that dropping rubber balls is needed on occasion in order to preserve the glass balls.

How do we identify what is a glass ball and what is a rubber ball? This is obviously a very personal designation but an easy way to gauge whether something is a glass ball or a rubber ball is to consider the outcome of what would happen if it is dropped. Would there be serious consequences or fallout if this particular thing didn’t get done? Then it’s a glass ball. If the fallout would be less severe, or more of a slight annoyance, and there’s an easy fix to it – then it is a rubber ball.

An important thing to note is that what is and isn’t a glass ball will change throughout your life. Many times these changes are gradual and happen over large spans of time. When you’re in your early 20s and focused on building your career, a glass ball could be work, and a rubber ball could be your home life. In ten years when you’re established in your field, you may find that the work glass ball has shifted to be rubber, whereas you now have a family who is glass.

This is why it is so important to identify which aspects of our lives are glass balls and which are rubber balls. If we drop a glass ball, such as

Even within this example you may find that there are quick switchbacks between glass and rubber. There are sometimes when professional items need to come first for small periods of time – such as when you have a tight deadline. The most important thing we can learn from the Glass Ball Theory is that sometimes we can’t do it all and need to prioritize – and that is okay.

PEOPLE OF PROMINENCE SERIES

Cary Clifford

Scan the local culinary horizon for an innovative enterprise with a purpose and longevity and you will find Camino Bakery. Camino has been in existence since 2007 from its humble beginnings in the basement kitchen of Krankies Coffee downtown and now is flourishing with four different locations in Winston-Salem. Cary Clifford, Camino’s founder, sat down for an interview about what it took to start and accelerate her business.

Tell us about your formative years. Where did you grow up?

I was raised right here in Winston-Salem! I went to RJR High School and I remember it as always being a place that was nice and my home, but not terribly exciting. There was nothing downtown. It was not like it is today. My early years were before the artistic energy really took hold here.

Between high school and college, I got out to see the world. I went to Nepal, Central America, and even Europe. An experience never forgotten was my hike on the Camino de Santiago in Spain (Europe’s storied and longest pilgrimage route). And so there you have the name of our bakery – Camino!

Where/how does the love of baking enter your picture?

Ha! I remember my mother telling me that I won a prize at the fair in the fourth grade for my honey whole wheat bread. I never went to culinary school, was never classically trained; it was just a passion I always had. To be honest, I did a lot of work in the front of the house in restaurants as a server, but always maintained my love and fascination for baking.

Give us the backstory to Camino Bakery.

In 2007, I was friends with the proprietors of Krankies Coffee downtown. They knew of my love for baking and started to suggest that I start to make some things for them to sell there. That eventually led to me producing products from their tiny basement kitchen and the response was overwhelming. I will forever be indebted to those who supported me there. Krankie’s had (and has) this amazing built-in loyal audience and so it was easy to make an impression there.

What was the turning point for believing you could start a business on your own?

I had the support of family and friends. I had the belief in myself. You have to be stubborn and always moving forward. My parents have always said that I am headstrong. I just love what I do and am not a person who is interested in settling or stagnating. I want to build something.

What was a memorable high point in this journey? And what was a memorable low point?

There have been flashes and moments where I look at where we have come, and I am very grateful to all who work for us and buy our products. But it sometimes is hard for me to sit back and just admire completely what we have accomplished. I am not interested in coasting, and you can never sit back and think, “OK - I have arrived.”

As for a low point – I remember in January of 2020 when we sat down here as management staff and proclaimed this was going to be our best year ever! March of 2020 rolls in and the pandemic froze the world. We immediately had to sell off our provisions and inventory. We had to take our menu down to almost nothing and really scale back. Not to mention staffing was reduced to the bare bones. We owners were pulling kitchen shifts to make it all work!

Talk about the spirit or mantra you try to inject into your enterprise here at Camino.

It is critical to be a happy place for our customers and employees. I love the idea that we are feeding the community at-large. Life is short and we want to exude a spirit of celebration of life here. It is about giving people a place where they can feel positive and included.

What would be your message to burgeoning entrepreneurs?

Be fully committed. Be good at a lot of things and persevere. When things started to stabilize after the pandemic, I was surprised at all the different roles I had taken on effectively. I didn’t know what I was doing at the beginning and took on everything just to learn it all. When I analyzed what the business needed next, I determined we needed to hire five full-time new positions so I could offload some of the tasks.

Who would you nominate for an interview as a Person of Prominence?

Clare Fader. She is a thriving local realtor here. In Malcolm Gladwell’s book The Tipping Point, he talks about connectors: people who act as a social hub, knowing seemingly everyone and connecting many people to each other. Clare is that person for Winston-Salem. She knows people from all walks of life, cares about them deeply, and introduces them to each other. She also works ceaselessly to make Winston a better place; she promotes and sponsors tons of events, she urges City leaders to do their best work. And she’s also just fun and kind!

NURSING SPECIALTIES

Something for Everyone

Whether you’re dreaming of becoming a nurse, are a recently graduated nurse, or an experienced nurse…there are many different career paths to consider. Nursing can be a long, exciting career journey with many diverse opportunities for growth and advancement along the way. Looking at what areas of nursing interest you can help you focus on a specific direction that may lead you to a nursing specialty that suits your personality and lifestyle.

WHAT IS A NURSING SPECIALTY?

There are countless nursing specialties. Each specialty defines an area of patient care in which a nurse has expertise and advanced knowledge gained through education, certifications, and/or experience. These specialties require an RN certification which can be obtained by completing at least an associate degree in nursing (ADN) or preferably a bachelor’s degree in nursing (BSN). RNs also need to pass the National Council Licensure Examination® (NCLEX-RN®) to be able to work as an RN. Eligibility and requirements to sit for the NCLEX vary by state.

NURSING SPECIALTIES:

• Labor & Delivery Nurse (L&D)

Labor and delivery (L&D) nurses provide care to expectant parents during labor and delivery. They also assist in surgery for c-sections and provide postpartum care. Labor and delivery nurses need to be flexible and be able to act quickly as labor can change rapidly.

• Emergency Nurse

Emergency department (ED) nurses must be ready for virtually any situation. They typically work in the emergency department of a hospital providing care to patients. This might include continuously monitoring and assessing critical patients, educating families, and assisting emergency physicians with procedures.

• Pediatric Nurse

Pediatric nurses provide care for patients under eighteen. A pediatric nurse can work in a pediatrician’s office or in a hospital treating patients. Some of the best pediatric nurses are energetic, optimistic, and friendly.

• Surgical/Perioperative Nurse

Surgical and perioperative nurses assist surgeons in the operating room (OR). They might also be asked to care for patients before and after surgery. In the OR, they are sometimes called scrub nurses and one of their main jobs is to pass instruments to the surgeon.

Public Health Nurse

Public health nurses devote much of their time to educating communities and advocating for overall public health. They play a large role in collecting data during disease outbreaks, creating education campaigns for the general public, and influencing the health of a community.

• Oncology Nurse

Oncology nurses help treat and care for cancer patients. Some daily tasks might include administering chemotherapy, helping to develop a treatment plan, and educating patients and families on their diagnosis and treatment. Oncology nurses need to be extremely compassionate and have excellent bedside manners.

Mental Health/Psychiatric Nurse

Mental health and psychiatric nurses work with patients who are struggling with psychiatric disorders. They are sometimes referred to as behavioral health nurses. Good psychiatric nurses are able to compassionately care for patients while maintaining firm boundaries.

• Geriatric Nurse

Geriatric nurses care for patients who are part of the elderly population. Common job duties include monitoring and assessing patients for common health concerns in the older population, organizing and administering medication, and helping the geriatric population age gracefully. Many geriatric nurses work in nursing homes, senior centers, and retirement communities.

Infection Control Nurse

An infection control nurse implements best practices for ensuring prevention of infections throughout the facility and works with the patient care teams to mitigate the spread of infectious diseases.

• Nurse Educator

Nurse educators often work for universities and hospitals training new nurses or providing continuing education for current nurses. They will create lesson plans, teach students, and research new developments in healthcare. This is a great specialty for people who want to have an impact on the careers of other nurses.

• Nurse Anesthetist (CRNA) – requires additional education beyond BSN

Certified registered nurse anesthetists (CRNA) administer anesthesia and provide pain management. They evaluate medical histories pre-operatively; monitor, assess, and administer medications to patients during procedures; and counsel them on pain control. CRNAs must be detail-oriented and attentive as they monitor anesthesia during surgeries.

• Nurse Practitioner (NP) – requires additional education beyond BSN Nurse Practitioners (NP) often serve as primary caregivers in private practices or hospital settings. They can prescribe medication, make diagnoses, and do minor procedures. Often, NPs work within a specialty, such as women’s health, or mental health, or primary care. NPs need to have strong communication and critical thinking skills, as they are tasked with making many decisions regarding patient care without the need to consult a physician.

SHINE THE LIGHT on Your Next Event with Alpha-Lit Letters

Looking to plan a picture perfect party? Let Alpha-Lit light up your big day. Alpha-Lit allows anyone to illuminate weddings, corporate events, birth announcements, and more with the letters of their choice lighting the way!

Originally opened in High Point, North Carolina, as Alpha-Lit Triad, Alpha-Lit has recently expanded the number of counties serviced with the creation of Alpha-Lit High Country in January 2023. With a total of 14 counties now under Alpha-Lit’s belt, owner Ashley Tillery was initially drawn to opening Alpha-Lit’s Triad location after seeing a birth announcement post on social media featuring the brand’s marquee letters. By parlaying her 19 years of experience in nonprofit fundraising and special events, she decided to reach out to license owners Mackenzie and Dan to fill the community’s need for a marquee letter rental service. Almost immediately, Ashley’s inbox was inundated with excited messages about Alpha-Lit establishing its Triad roots She anticipates even more excitement within the community following the recent additions of Alpha-Lit’s service in the Yadkin Valley and High Country.

Since 2020, Alpha-Lit’s growth has been apparent through its involvement with events such as Forsyth Magazines’ Women on the Move Conference, MerleFest, graduation celebrations, proms, weddings, and upcoming summer events at Appalachian State University. As a business owner for three years, and full-time for two of those years, Ashley has found solace in connecting with other small business owners throughout the community.

What sets Alpha-Lit’s service apart from its very few competitors in the area is not solely attributable to its reliable and efficient delivery services. Alpha-Lit letters possess the unique ability to be stacked two letters high, can be customized in order to suit logos and events of all kinds, and can be used just about anywhere. Many marquee letters are not weather-proof and are very one-dimensional, but Alpha-Lit letters are durable and versatile. As a brand, Alpha-Lit supports local businesses and is proud to produce all their letters within the United States.

Ashley strives to ensure that Alpha-Lit accommodates last minute requests, offering rental-only services equipped with

delivery and assembly. To help planners visualize their ideal Alpha-Lit set-up for their individual event, Ashley allows potential renters and hosts to view photo albums of past marquee letter set-ups for inspiration. Marquee letter rentals are able to be reserved with a 50-percent deposit, and it is recommended to book as far in advance as possible - especially when planning an event over a holiday.

Social media’s influence on party decor and photo opportunities is something Ashley attributes to the success of Alpha-Lit. With an audience on platforms such as Instagram and Facebook, it is now more important than ever to party planners and guests to capture the moment, and to do so in the most photogenic way possible. Seeing the excitement on guests’ and hosts’ faces when Ashley plugs in the marquee letters is one of the most rewarding aspects of her new career. In fact, being able to use her creativity in arranging letters and customizing orders for renters brings her joy.

“I could spell the same thing over and over again with our marquee letters and never get bored,” explains Ashley. “There is something at Alpha-Lit for everyone, and we love filling custom orders of all kinds.”

Don’t wait until it’s too late to book your letters. Visit www.alphalitletters.com for more information on various Alpha-Lit locations, and to view the website’s gallery of past events. To stay up-to-date on the latest happenings at Alpha-Lit, follow @ alphalittriadnc and @alphalit_highcountry on Instagram and Facebook.

Imposter Syndrome –

What It Is and How to Overcome It

Do you feel like a phony in some area of your life? You may be experiencing imposter syndrome. People who struggle with imposter syndrome believe that they are undeserving of their achievements. They have a gnawing feeling of selfdoubt and incompetence, coupled with the dread of being exposed as a fraud. Many people with imposter syndrome are well accomplished and may even hold high office or have numerous academic degrees.

Imposter syndrome is often driven by personality traits but competitive environments may also contribute to these feelings of inadequacy. Women are especially vulnerable. A 2020 study by KPMG found that 75% of executive women identified having experienced imposter syndrome at various points during their careers—and 85% believe it is commonly experienced by women across corporate America.

Why do more women suffer from this than men? Sources suggest that it may be attributed to things such as:

• Stereotyping and biases - Women may internalize societal beliefs that they are less capable than men, leading them to doubt their abilities.

• Lack of representation - When women are underrepresented in a field, they may feel like they don’t belong, which can contribute to imposter syndrome.

• Different expectations and standards - Women may face different expectations and standards than men and feel they must prove themselves more to be taken seriously.

• Perfectionism - Women are more likely to be perfectionistic, which can lead to feelings of inadequacy.

Here are some strategies to consider if you are suffering from imposter syndrome:

• Acknowledge your feelings - Recognize that imposter syndrome is a normal experience and that you are not alone. Allow yourself to feel the emotions, but try not to dwell on them, let them control your actions, or hold you back in any way.

• Listen to the feedback you get from others - Other people tend to be more objective than we are with ourselves. Instead of listening to your negative inner critic, listen to the feedback you get from others.

• Make a list - Psychologist Suzanne Imes (who coined the term “imposter syndrome”) suggests making a list with three columns.

1. Things we aren’t so good at

2. Things we are okay at

3. Things we are very good at

The premise is that reminders of strengths and accomplishments will reduce self-doubt.

• Surround yourself with supportive people - Surrounding yourself with positive mentors, colleagues, and friends can help boost your confidence and counteract the impact of imposter syndrome.

• Set realistic expectations - It’s important to recognize that no one is perfect and that mistakes and failures are an important part of learning. Focus on your progress and celebrate your successes, large and small.

• Engage in self-care - Prioritize self-care activities such as exercise, eating well, relaxation, and sleep. Taking care of your physical and mental well-being can help you feel more confident and better equipped to overcome the feelings associated with imposter syndrome.

Once you recognize that your thoughts are coming from a place of imposter syndrome, you can begin to shift your mind towards healthier, more productive thoughts. These negative thoughts may not ever fully go away. They may creep in when you have a stretch assignment at work, accept a promotion, or take a leap in your career. The key to managing it is to act despite having the thoughts!

Father’s Day is a special time to celebrate the father figures in our lives and show our appreciation for all they do. While traditional gifts like ties and socks are always appreciated, there are also many experiences in Forsyth County that you can enjoy together as a family. Here are some ideas for Father’s Day experiences that you can do together instead of gifts:

EXPLORE THE OUTDOORS

Forsyth County is home to many beautiful parks and nature reserves, making it the perfect destination for an outdoor adventure with dad. Take a hike through Pilot Mountain State Park or Reynolda Gardens, or rent a bike and explore the Salem Lake Trail. You can also take a guided tour of Tanglewood Park or go fishing at Yadkin River Park. The updated Quarry Park playground and walkways are impressive and a must see!

VISIT A MUSEUM

Forsyth County has a rich history and culture, and there are many museums in the area that offer a unique experience for Father’s Day. The Reynolda House Museum of American Art and the Southeastern Center for Contemporary Art are great options for art lovers, while the Old Salem Museums and Gardens and the Children’s Museum of Winston-Salem are perfect for families with children.

BEYOND TIES AND SOCKS:

Unique Father’s Day Experiences in Forsyth County

HAVE

A SPORTS DAY

If your dad is a sports fan, there are plenty of activities in Forsyth County that you can enjoy together. Head to BB&T Ballpark and cheer on the Winston-Salem Dash, or play a round of golf at one of the many courses in the area. You can also visit the Winston-Salem Fairgrounds and catch a horse race or watch a game of polo. Tanglewood and Salem Lake are other options available.

TAKE A FOOD TOUR

Forsyth County is known for its delicious food, and taking a food tour is a great way to explore the city’s culinary offerings. Sign up for a tour with Taste Carolina Gourmet Food Tours or Winston-Salem Walking Tours and sample some of the best food the city has to offer. You can also visit the Cobblestone Farmers Market and pick out fresh ingredients to make a meal together at home.

ATTEND A CONCERT OR SHOW

If your dad is a music or theater fan, there are many venues in Forsyth County that offer live performances. Catch a concert at the WinstonSalem Symphony or the Ramkat, or enjoy a play or musical at the Winston-Salem Theatre Alliance

or the Stevens Center. Kernersville and Clemmons also have several venues for plays and live performances.

LEARN SOMETHING NEW

Father’s Day is a great opportunity to learn something new together. Sign up for a cooking class at The Stocked Pot or a pottery class at Earthbound Arts. You can also take a woodworking class at The Sawtooth School for Visual Art or a photography class at the Sawtooth Gallery.

VOLUNTEER TOGETHER

Giving back to the community is a great way to spend Father’s Day together. Sign up to volunteer at a local organization like the Second Harvest Food Bank of Northwest NC or Habitat for Humanity. You can also participate in a cleanup event with Keep Forsyth County Beautiful or help out at a local animal shelter.

Father’s Day is a special time to celebrate the father figures in our lives, and there are many experiences in Forsyth County that you can enjoy together instead of traditional gifts. Whether you explore the outdoors, visit a museum, have a sports day, take a food tour, attend a concert or show, learn something new, or volunteer together, there are plenty of opportunities to make lasting memories with your dad. So this Father’s Day, skip the socks and ties and plan an experience that you’ll both cherish for years to come.

Taming Your Inner Critic

Have you ever had thoughts like:

I don’t have enough self-control….

I’m so stupid….

I can’t do that….

I messed up so might as well go back to my old ways….

I should have done ….

Henry Ford said, “Whether you think you can or think you can’t, you’re right.” Proverbs 4:23 says, “Be careful what you think because your thoughts run your life.” As you can imagine, the thoughts shared above can be quite limiting, and it would be difficult to have much success in changing behaviors if they are running through your mind.

We are constantly talking to ourselves –and much of it isn’t good. I know I have a terrible inner critic that provides an internal monologue of all the things I suck at. It sends us messages like I’m not worthy enough, smart enough or good enough. When we start to believe these negative thought patterns, it holds us back from being our best selves.

I have named my inner critic Marjorie. No offense to any Marjories out there! It is just what came to mind. Marjorie is a skinny, blonde, goody two shoes. She has a successful career, an impeccable house and a family that has it all together. She is an excellent cook and is basically good at all the other things that I’m not. She is very “judgy” and says things to me throughout the day that make me feel dumb, incompetent and generally like I can’t do anything right. Marjorie tries to undermine me at every turn.

For change to happen in our lives, this has got to stop. We must let the Spirit help us change the way we are thinking. And, we have to get rid of our Marjories.

1. Provide Positive Reinforcement – Make sure you are reminding yourself of your accomplishments and the positive things about you on a regular basis. If you were going to give a friend some constructive criticism, wouldn’t you try to balance it out with positive feedback over time? You need to do the same for yourself! Toot your own horn occasionally, and recognize your accomplishments.

2. Talk Back – Start to notice when your inner critic is coming into play. When you recognize it, then you can start to talk back! I think naming my inner critic gave me an odd kind of power. Now, I tell Marjorie to shut up and buzz off when she starts her nonsense. If I start to notice Marjorie being critical in a particular area, I come back with a Bible verse of how God sees me.

3. Treat Yourself Like You Would A Friend – You wouldn’t say such harsh things to a friend, so you shouldn’t say those things to yourself. Remember the tongue has the power of life and death (Proverbs 18:21) and that applies when you are talking to yourself. Cheer yourself up like you would a friend by treating yourself with kindness and compassion instead of being so self-critical.

When we are being critical of ourselves, we need to remember that there is no condemnation for those in Jesus Christ. The Bible tells us to take every thought captive. (2 Corinthians 10:5) We can do this by training our minds to let go of our self-judgment, embrace ourselves as we are and not focus on our failures. When our inner critic arises, we can acknowledge these thoughts, let them pass and replace them with kind words about ourselves.

I’m not good enough….

Remember when you were a child, even a teenager, and happiness was so elusive? Nothing really made you happy and if you were happy, the feeling was temporary at best. If you talked to your parents about ‘how to find happiness,’ they possibly focused on the ways many of us have become conditioned to look for happiness. But as you have matured and see life as it truly is, could your parents possibly not have been honest with you about happiness and where we find it? I am so glad you asked!

Conversations with Your BFF Have I Been Looking for Love in All the Wrong Places?

HAPPINESS IS IN THE HANDS OF OTHERS

I remember growing up and being told to treat others as you want to be treated…the golden rule. I still believe that the best way to live is to put your head on the pillow nightly with little regret, but not everyone ascribes to that teaching. It is easy to let your happiness depend on others. A coworker treats you poorly, gossips behind your back and there goes your happiness. An in-law makes every effort to let you know she hates you, personal experience here, and you think the rest of the family is onboard with her. Handing over control of your happiness to someone else is not healthy and not true. Teach your kids to display kindness and even when it isn’t given back, continue to extend kindness.

THE MORE MONEY YOU HAVE, THE HAPPIER YOU WILL BE

Not many parents would say, ‘money is the root of happiness,’ yet many parents imply that it is because of their actions. Parents spend time working late, missing dinner, passing on soccer games, and recitals. We need to teach our children that money is a means, not an end. The biggest reward from being financially stable is to be able to give away to others and lift others up.

HAPPINESS IS GOOD WHEN YOU CAN GET IT, BUT DON’T HOLD YOUR BREATH

No one gets through life without tragedy and heartache. Some have more than others, that’s for sure. As a result, we can develop an attitude that happiness is good, but don’t hold your breath waiting on it. There’s no doubt you can survive without a constant stream of ‘happiness,’ but that may not be much of an existence. One way to get more happiness in your life is to practice

gratitude. Learning to count your blessings, even when they are few and far between, is a good way to have a happier life. Teach your kids about being thankful in the big things, but especially the small.

HAPPINESS IS A VAGUE IDEA THAT’S OUT THERE FOR US TO FIND

Have you ever felt like happiness is something you discover somewhere or that it may just fall in your lap when you aren’t looking for it? Happiness might be hidden in the right relationship with ‘the one,’ or in the right career choice, or having a family. With this mindset, your kids may think that happiness is out there waiting for them to stumble upon it. However, in my experience, happiness is often not about what you may find, but lies in what you give to others. When you serve people in some capacity, studies have shown

you are happier on the whole. Teach your children early on about the importance of putting others before yourself.

HAPPINESS COMES WITH THE THINGS WE HAVE

The more stuff you have, the happier you’ll be. Really? Did you know that studies show there is no correlation between acquiring more things and happiness? When you believe and teach your children that being contented gives you feelings of happiness, you can change their mindset and yours. You can still impart that working hard and bettering yourself is important in life, but not focus on that happiness comes in the things we have. Happiness is most often found in those we love and that love us and knowing the difference we can make in the lives of others.
