Getting the Glow Without the Damage The Benefits of a Spray Tan

When I was in high school, I loved laying out in the sun. Back in my day, it was baby oil and a reflective blanket, flipping every hour, following the path of the sun all day. No one said very much about it ever leading to wrinkles, because at 16, who is worried about wrinkles? Fast forward to present day, I don’t lay out much due to…you got it, damaging my skin and wrinkles. So, turning to a safe way to get a tan was definitely a route I wanted to take!

Someone once told me, “Tanned fat looks better than white fat,” and I have to agree. But, what are other benefits of a spray tan that you may not have thought about in your search for that summer glow?

NO UV EXPOSURE

My tolerance for the heat of southern summers is different these days. I love a hot summer day, but to just sit and bake like a rotisserie chicken isn’t for me anymore. With my spray tan, I get the look I want without any of the damage that comes from the sun. Basically, no sun exposure means no skin damage from the harmful UV radiation leading to lower risk of developing melanoma.

INSTANT RESULTS

With a good spray tan, like a personal spray tan or a Mystic Tanning booth, you don’t have to spend hours in the sun to get that sun-kissed look. It will only take about 10 to 20 minutes for you to get the results that you want, which works well with today’s busy schedules.

NO STREAKS FOR ME!

I have tried many lotions, sprays and foams to get a tan, but most leave the tell-tale signs of the product…streaks! My experience with the Mystic Tanning has been excellent. Not a streak to be found! You can start as light as you want and gradually get to the color you like, or jump in and go for the mid-summer-been-to-the beach-for-a-month look. It is recommenced to exfoliate before getting the spray tan, so it will be easily absorbed and then wait at least a day before you shower. My spray tan lasts about a week to 10 days.

FACE IT, YOU FEEL BETTER WITH A TAN!

I always feel better about the way I look in my clothes when I have a tan; my self-confidence gets a boost with a jump in my skin color. I feel healthier, too. It’s a weird psychological thing for me…I just like a tan.

TAN LINES ARE USUALLY IN THE WORST LOCATIONS

I’m one of those girls who hates tan lines. I will unhook whatever type of bathing suit I have to make sure my tan lines are as minimal as possible. As my tanning professional, Tara Snow, likes to say, “With a spray tan, you can maneuver yourself in the booth to make sure all the nooks and crannies are sprayed.” She’s right! No tan lines is a major plus to spray tanning. You can wear the strapless sundress without everyone knowing what bikini top you wore the day before.

If you are like me and have decided to let the reflective blanket, baby oil and frying like bacon in the sun go for whatever reason, look into spray tanning. It is a great option to still get the look you want and leave any additional damage to your skin behind.

Keeping It Real

THE GIFT CALLED TODAY

August 6, 2009 . . . the day I landed flat on my face. I woke up to an amazingly routine morning. (Call me boring but I love routine!) The aroma of hot nectar beckoned me downstairs. I read and reflected, setting rhythm to my day. I prayed with a hurting soul, and answered a backlog of emails. Eventually, I hopped on my road bike to soak in the morning’s beauty, traveling along back roads to stay out of traffic, as is my routine (told ya!).

A couple of hours later, my husband received an unexpected call from an unfamiliar voice. "I found your wife unconscious, facedown in the middle of the road. An ambulance is on its way. Meet us at the hospital."

Although I remember nothing about that day (not even the nectar), I eventually regained consciousness in the Neuro-ICU. The head injury itself should have taken my life. While my helmet smashed into pieces, I broke in only a few. Within days, I began to speak and think coherently.

A week later, surgeons put Humpty-Dumpty back together again with steel rods and bolts to repair my shoulder. Once hospitals and surgeries were in my rearview mirror, I assumed the worst was behind me. Yet, the coming days would test the very core of who I am.

For three long months, all traces of independence vanished. My routine (there’s that word again) shattered into unidentifiable pieces. I could not bathe or clothe myself. I couldn't cut meat much less cook it. I could not buckle my shoes or sleep in a bed. Excursions were restricted to physical therapy and Church. My husband chauffeured me everywhere because, oh yeah, I couldn't drive either.

I learned a lot about myself in that desert season. Most of it wasn't pretty. First of all, pride consumed more of me than I admitted. Wearing a baseball cap to hide hair I couldn't fix took its toll. My wardrobe consisted of three hideous shirts that accommodated my immovable shoulder. My cosmetic application efforts proved the equivalent of a six-year-old. Every girl longs to feel beautiful; God made us that way. Yet, when outward beauty becomes our defining mark, superficiality prevails. Unknowingly, my priorities had become misaligned.

Secondly, this girl loves her ducks in a row. Naively, I believed those “unexpected calls” were always for someone else, like somehow I was invincible. When my world came to a screeching halt, my ducks scattered. I realized I possessed only the illusion of control. We are so utterly dependent on God for even our next breath. Independence is a lie we feed ourselves to feel empowered. Somewhere along the journey, I lost sight of this reality.

Finally, I realized in spite of my verbal confessions, my sense of worth wrapped tightly around what I did rather than who I was. I allowed performance to measure me. Without the ability to function, I felt incredibly insignificant. Who am I if I can't do anything for anyone, including myself?

In that dry season, I had to get real with the person in the mirror. It's amazing how the most barren seasons of our lives can produce some of the sweetest harvests if we let them. Ironically, the desolate times can be the most productive ones. We finally look God's way, giving Him our undivided attention, only to discover He's been looking our way all along. We discover that He doesn’t measure us as we measure ourselves. Our performance doesn’t impress or depress Him. He’s here and He’s not bailing when the going gets tough.

I’d love to say I will always remember that day but in reality, I can’t. I still have no recollection of that routine morning or the events that followed. I have no idea what hit me or how long I laid in that road. Yet, I retain great treasures from that season. My body carries scars that remind me of an experience that compelled me to live deeper. They remind me of an exasperating season that magnified the gift of today. Yes, beyond the scars, permanent marks are now imprinted upon my soul. From this deeper place, I endeavor to leave a mark, not with my name on it, but with HIS . . . the One who gives each of us the gift called . . . today.

Emma Kaye | Pet Portrait Artist

This month’s featured creator, Emma Kaye, is a young artist based in Winston-Salem with a passion and talent for creating vivid works of art of the animal sidekicks that capture our hearts. Through her ability to replicate a pet’s unique personality and disposition on canvas, Emma’s work is truly treasured by its recipient.

How would you describe your work?

I enjoy creating a variety of artistic pieces and enjoy experimenting with new mediums, but my true love is painting. The majority of my paintings capture realistic landscapes and dogs, with a love for people’s pets. My preferred medium is oil paints but I enjoy trying different things from time to time.

What influences your art?

For as long as I can remember I have been influenced by stories of how pets impact the lives of their families. My dog growing up, a goldendoodle named Lily, was one of those dogs. We nicknamed her “Mom Dog” because when my sister or I yelled for my mom, Lily would come running and if we were fighting she would sit on one of us to break the tension. She has had a lasting impact on our family and I want to help other families remember their important family members through my art.

How have you evolved, personally, as an artist?

I have experimented with a variety of styles and mediums, some in classes and some independently. I chose to attend Reynolds High School as an art magnet student and continued taking classes at App State. Finding my personal style has taken some time, and I’m sure it will continue to evolve. Through the exploration of different mediums and styles I have developed confidence in my ability as an artist.

How do you carve out time to be creative?

As a college student it can be difficult to find time to paint, but I make a point to try to do something creative everyday and plan additional time on the weekends. I spent my summer creating my online presence and working to promote my art.

Do you have a favorite story behind one of your paintings and why?

One of the first pet paintings I created was of Kringle, a dog that I follow on Instagram that was badly burned. He is a really sweet dog that had some terrible experiences, but is making his family and his followers happy everyday. I sent the painting to his family, who loved it and shared it to his Instagram page.

What are you working on that excites you right now?

I am currently working on a set of portraits for a family who will be welcoming their first baby soon, and wanted portraits of her fur brother as part of their nursery decoration. I love that my paintings will be a part of her room and hope they help foster a great relationship between the two. I am also building my art business and being able to use my talent to make others happy is what is exciting for me right now.

What is one piece of advice you’d like to share with fellow artists, especially those at the start of their careers?

Don’t get discouraged by criticism, just keep working and creating, to find who you are as an artist.

If you are interested in learning more about this month’s artist, Emma Kaye, you can find her work online at emmakayeart.com as well as follow her on Instagram @ekayeart.

Purpose Push:

Back in the Groove

Last month, I talked about taking a break and why it’s important for your long-term health and success. Well…did you take a break? If you did, I bet you feel refreshed and may even be ready to get back to work. When we are operating in our purpose, sometimes we miss being in the mix of it all. Charging our mental batteries, however, promotes sustainability and strength to continue triumphing over the obstacles that come with business, so please make time for it.

One of the liberating benefits of being a businesswoman is deciding how to build a business that supports your lifestyle and your absence during breaks. In July, I mentioned having systems that support the start of your break but it’s just as important to have systems to support you returning from them.

You may not know what’s waiting on you when you get back to business and as a God-led businesswoman, you also know it’s possible to have ideas and pivots to share because God has shared a new revelation about your business.

How are you supposed to handle the unknown?

First, realize you are not alone and it’s not your job to find the solution (Proverbs 15:29). It’s only your job to be obedient to God’s Word. The very next thing you need to do is pray for direction. It can be as simple as:

“Lord, please help me implement these divine downloads you’ve given me for the glory of your Kingdom.”

If you’re still unsure about the direction, simply start moving the best way you know how and allow the Holy Spirit to course correct your decisions. When you return from breaks, your mind is not yet too noisy so it’s more likely you will soon hear a clear word from God.

If you are clear on the direction to go after praying, you can then decide your pace. Jumping back in is fine but it can be overwhelming depending on your personality or the type of business you have. Oftentimes,

Sheridan C. Watkins is a journalist and the owner of Perennial Peaces, a jewelry and gifts brand focused on transcending self-worth to all women. Her true work began after climbing out of a dark place with the help of God and therapy and her life mission is to provide tangible peace through her Divine gifts to help women heal and transform their life. Follow the mission on Instagram and Facebook: @perennialpeaces

we don’t account for the time we may need to catch up on everything and this can cause us to wrongly believe that taking a break was the problem. Determine what getting back into the flow of business looks like for you and prioritize what to focus on each day so you aren’t swamped with demands. Monday could be catching up on emails, Tuesday could be answering team questions, and Wednesday could be for scheduling meetings. If taking a whole day to catch up isn’t realistic, you can carve out time blocks to allow a focus period out of each day. Before you know it, you’ll be caught up on everything from your break!

My last challenge for you before returning to your routine is to reflect on your break. What did you learn? What proved it wouldn’t selfdestruct? How do you feel about yourself? Bring out your journal and write it all down and go back to it whenever you resist taking another break. We learned in Genesis that God took a break on the seventh day of creating this world we work in and even blessed us with the Sabbath that is a part of the Ten Commandments (Exodus 20:8-11). Rest is not an option but a way of righteous living. So it’s time to show up more as the Godly woman that you are. Every day is a gift and I have faith that you will care for each one of them, whether it is time to work hard or play hard.

Luscious & Juicy Red Fruit with Hard Green Outer Layer

Watermelon is a nutritional powerhouse.

Cut into triangle wedges, as kids grabbed slices off of the counter as our moms shoved us back outside to let the juices flow and not make a mess inside. Our slices were full of black seeds that we would enjoy spitting at our siblings and friends on a hot summer day, while rivers of sweet, red juice ran down our arms. Pink drips would run down our elbows and stain our shirts. Those simple summer memories that are so vivid.

I have always loved watermelon. My husband and kids cannot get enough. Unsliced it can sit on our counter for a week, but once I cut into it, it is gone the same day!

But, have you noticed that most watermelons are a seedless variety now? It is hard to find a watermelon in the store WITH those black seeds; 98% sold are seedless. Although much easier to eat, this means no more seed-spitting contests!! For me, this brings up issues of GMOs ... .BUT, that is another topic for another blog.

Watermelon season runs from May through October. Ninety-two percent water, watermelon is low in calories, as well as an excellent source of vitamin C and beta carotene. It is considered one of the cleanest, non-organic fruits to eat because of its thick skin. Watermelon contains lycopene; a powerful antioxidant proven to fight off certain types of cancer. I like it best sprinkled with sea salt.

When choosing a watermelon at the store, the skin should be slightly shiny. It should have a yellow or white spot on the surface somewhere and if you knock on it, it should sound hollow. You want to pick one that feels heavy for its size, usually meaning that it is full of juice.

Add watermelon to fruit salad. Fresh mint is a great compliment to a watermelon dish. Here are a couple of additional recipes to enjoy with your family.

Watermelon-Lemonade Cooler

15 cups seeded and cubed watermelon

2 (12-ounce) cans frozen lemonade concentrate, thawed

2 mint sprigs

Ice

Process watermelon, in batches, in a blender or food processor until smooth. Combine concentrate and 2 mint sprigs, and cook in a saucepan over medium-high heat for 10 minutes. Women in the Workplace Series: Part 1

This three part series will provide an in-depth look at the results of the 2023 “Women in the Workplace Community Survey” provided by REACH Women’s Network, exploring the importance of its findings and recognizing the opportunities and change women hope to see in our local workforce. REACH is an acronym for Recognize, Encourage, Advance, Connect Her. The nonprofit’s mission is to close the gender gap by raising the collective voice and influence of women in the workplace.

Navigating the complexities of the modern workplace, women encounter a multitude of specific and unique demands, challenges, and barriers that profoundly shape their professional journeys.

This past April, REACH conducted its first comprehensive study of its kind conducted in Forsyth County, with its survey designed to measure how working women in the community feel about issues such as workplace flexibility and benefits, company culture, job satisfaction, career advancement, work/life integration, and more. With 687 working women in Forsyth County participating, the results provided an upclose understanding of what women in our community experience, as well as have their eyes on when it comes to the future of their careers.

In this first article of the series, we’re shining a spotlight on a pressing issue that impacts countless women in the workplace both locally and across the nation: mental health and burnout.

This probably doesn’t come as a shock, but the relationship between women’s well-being and their professional lives has a major impact on their mental health. Balancing expectations from society, family roles, and career responsibilities creates a tremendous strain that often leads to heightened stress levels, burnout, and even long-term psychological and physiological implications. “Women have been leaving the workforce at a greater pace than men, so we wanted to ask them, directly and anonymously, what it would take for them to thrive, not merely survive, in the workplace,” Julia Townsend, co-president of REACH shared.

Survey Results: A Look at Collective Burnout

• 83% of responding women stated they experience burnout at least sometimes; 47% of those said they experience it “often” or “almost always.”

• 1/3 of respondents said they believe that requesting or taking advantage of their employer’s existing flexible work opportunities would negatively affect their chances for promotion (1/3 said it would not, and 1/3 replied “neither agree nor disagree.”)

• 82% say mental health care coverage is absolutely essential or very important as a workplace benefit (second only to affordable medical insurance coverage).

Opportunities for Employer Support & Change

“The level of burnout is concerning, but not all that surprising, given some of the national statistics we have seen that are in line with this,” Townsend said. “At the same time, at least one third of responding women believe taking advantage of options that could reduce their stress would negatively impact their careers. Employers must do a better job assuring women that they will not be penalized if they take advantage of these options.”

While many employers over the last decade have added mental health benefits or created programs and resources for employees to help improve mental health overall, the need to reach its female associates is evident. Ofen there is a misconception that burnout and mental health overwhelm is an issue more rampant for lower income families or those struggling with unemployment. The majority of survey participants were full-time employees at one job, working 35–50 hours per week. 95% were self-identified as professional women and 88% had completed at least a bachelor’s degree. The annual wage income recorded from participants followed a bell curve; 27% had an annual salary of $50,000–$74,900 and 19% had an annual salary of $100,000–$199,999.

There is still work to do.

The initial idea for the survey arose from the questions, “What do women need to thrive in the workplace? And how do we know if we’re moving the needle on those things?” said Julia Townsend. The fact of the matter is that women are navigating a complex and ever changing professional landscape where their unique skills, talents, and perspectives are essential for fostering success for their employers and communities. However, the overwhelm of expectations and systemic barriers for women continue to hinder their progress, stifling their potential and limiting their ability to fully thrive in the way that they crave and deserve.

The hope of this survey and of the women in this community is that by learning more we’re developing understanding and in turn proactive efforts to create a truly inclusive and equitable working environment.

If you are interested in learning more about the 2023 survey or receiving additional information, you can sign up for updates through the REACH website, reachwomensnetwork.org/survey.

Dreaming & Healing

Sleep – a glorious, but often elusive, time of relaxation for the body and mind – is something we all long for and spend time trying to improve by setting healthy bedtime routines and, in a perfect world (but definitely not mine!), limiting caffeine and screen time in the evenings.

While I have many friends who struggle with falling asleep and staying asleep, I personally find it easy to drift off. But what happens during those precious hours of slumber can often be unsettling – and certainly not restful. Dreams – whether you remember them or not – are an important element in our well-being, and can even provide a healing power, if you let them!

Dreaming is actually vital to your emotional health, and, if you pay attention, can expand ideas and issues you are dealing with during your waking hours. Even the shortest and simplest dreams can remind us something about ourselves, and may be our subconscious stirring us to move in a certain direction. No matter how perplexing, think of a detailed dream as a gift you’ve been given, to see a certain situation in your life more clearly, or steer you towards a life-changing action you didn’t even know you needed.

DO ANY OF THESE COMMON THEMES SOUND FAMILIAR?

Changing Clothes: If you change outfits frequently in your dreams (or you’re always searching for the perfect pair of shoes), your dream may be focusing on something you want to change about yourself, or even focusing on a new life role. This one definitely hits home!

Recurring Setting: Every person and location in your dreams can represent a different part of yourself. If you continually dream about a certain house or building, it may represent an event in your life you are trying to reconcile. If you eventually dream of seeing the site destroyed, you may have finally allowed yourself to let go of the negative emotions associated with it. I have one insightful friend who constantly dreamed of a white farmhouse through the years, until one day her dreams found her setting the house on fire. As part of her own healing process, she was destroying the site of an unpleasant event from her childhood.

Carrying Many Bags: If your dreams include you grasping for several bags at once and struggling to carry them all, chalk it up to the fact that you are probably carrying too many burdens in real life that aren’t yours to carry. Trying to pick up too many items at once can also signify an overload in your daily life – too much to do and not enough time. Maybe now is the time to lighten your daily – and emotional – load!

Falling: A common dream scenario, dreaming of falling can mean you’re focused on something that just isn’t going to work out the way you planned. Relax and regroup!

Being Lost: If you find yourself continuously lost in your nightly dreams, it may indicate you feel you don’t fit in with your current situation – be it a relationship or a career. Running away in a dream may mean you are trying to avoid an issue in real life you’d prefer not to deal with.

Reliving School Stress: Who hasn’t had this one? It’s pretty clear you’re feeling unprepared if you dream of missing a college exam, being late for a class or test, or not remembering the correct classroom. You are definitely not alone if this is your most common recurring dream!

I’ve noticed my own dreams usually blend different areas of my life – past and present –often in the same setting, which isn’t unusual, since dreams may rearrange the events or people slightly, to offer a new perspective.

If you want to take a closer look at your dream themes, experts suggest keeping a journal at your bedside – even if you only remember snippets of a dream, or flashes of something familiar. Sharing your dreams with a friend is also a good way to sift through recurring themes. Chances are good you’ll learn something new about yourself!

Wear the Swimsuit

You may have heard the quote, “How do you get a bikini body? You wear a bikini.”

It feels empowering, laced with feminist energy. It paints the picture of bikini clad women of every age and size splashing along the beach in droves, owning their confidence and living their best lives.

And for some of us, we may be saying “Yes! You go, girl!” knowing full well we’d be sitting somewhere on the sidelines in the sand with our carefully chosen cover up not going anywhere. After all, sure - some women can just “wear the bikini” but it’s easier said than done. In fact, it feels impossible right now.

Sure, maybe once you lose the baby weight? Or perhaps 10 years ago in your forties? Certainly after your gym plan goes into action and your wobbly bits are a little less, well, wobbly? You just have to wait, right? Then you’ll have your day in the sun.

What does waiting look like?

The year is 2001, it’s the summer before seventh grade and my mom agrees to take me back-to-school shopping. (Pivotal moment for a middle school girl.) My mom and I both love a good deal so we head to T.J. Maxx where I’m reminded for the third time not to get distracted on anything other than school clothes.

Spoiler alert, I immediately get distracted. Walking through the store looking through racks I spot this black and white, polka dot bikini and discover it’s on clearance and in my size. Staring at this swimsuit, I know that this swimsuit is “the” swimsuit.

This is the swimsuit that I will wear when I finally say yes to attending my first pool party or joining friends for a beach trip for the first time. I know that by next summer, I’m going to be looking good because I am not letting anything get in my way this year when it comes to losing weight.

Seventh grade comes and goes followed by the summer after eighth grade and the tags stay on the swimsuit. The summer before high school comes and goes and the summer after that and the tags continue to remain firmly attached to the swimsuit. (Can you see where this is going?)

Until one day, I am a married woman unpacking a box full of clothing to put away in our new home and what should be staring back at me? The black and white, polka dot, summer-before seventh-grade, T.J. Maxx bikini with all its hopes and dreams.

What is waiting costing you?

I stared at that swimsuit and was flooded by memories of all the things I had said no to, waiting to be deserving of that swimsuit. I thought about party invites I declined, beach trips I spent sweating on the sand never getting in the water and so many times I waited for perfection that never came.

I pulled out my scissors and while I wanted to cut that swimsuit into a million pieces, instead I tried it on and looked in the mirror for a moment. And that summer, I went to the community pool, by myself wearing that bikini because I was done waiting. In fact, a few short summers later in a very postpartum body I wore it again for our little family’s first beach trip, reminding myself I was done waiting to love my body.

It’s never really about a swimsuit. This idea of waiting for perfection is costing us too much. We have to stop and ask, “How long is too long to wait?”

How long is too long to wait to enjoy summers at the beach with your kids? To lie on a towel feeling the sun on your thighs? Splash around with your grandkids in the pool? To stop being at war with the body that has done so much for you and start showing it love?

The truth is, the reason we don’t slip on that swimsuit hiding in the dresser isn’t rooted in a single ounce of truth. All those insecurities dancing around our heads are the falsities we’ve allowed to push out the real truth - that the body you’re in is worthy of fun and freedom. (Not a negative twenty pounds from now or 10 years ago, but right now exactly as it is.)

Wear the swimsuit.

This summer isn’t over yet. You have memories to make and a swimsuit somewhere calling your name. Don’t get to the golden years of your life wishing you had made a splash. Get out there exactly as you are and do it right dang now.

Gear Up for a Great School Year:

Donate to Educator Warehouse this August

Excited about sending your child back to school this fall, but not too thrilled about the price of school supplies? Every year, both parents and teachers share mixed feelings about their budget as a new school year commences. While parents and teachers want the best notebooks, pencils, and backpacks for their little learners, splurging too much on colored pencils and crayons can break the bank for many families.

Students whose parents cannot afford to purchase their necessary school supplies each year can suffer negative psychological consequences, such as feelings of inadequacy and lack of motivation. Feeling embarrassed for not having a brand new backpack or the trendiest binders can make showing up to school feel like a daunting task. Fortunately, through Educator Warehouse, teachers can ensure that their students receive the tools they need in order to succeed.

To help WS/FCS teachers foot the bill for their students’ supplies, the Educator Warehouse allows teachers to shop through thousands of donated and gently used school supplies. The Forsyth Educator Partnership, Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Council of PTAs, and WS/FCS joined forces to create the Educator Warehouse facility, located behind Diggs-Latham Elementary School. Local businesses and individuals can donate supplies or money to help support Educator Warehouse and allow teachers to supply their classrooms for a fraction of the cost.

After weathering the COVID-19 pandemic, Educator Warehouse’s teacher shopping experience has greatly increased to 40%, finally recovering after a pandemic-induced slump. Because many classrooms were learning remotely, teachers and educators conducted very little supply shopping. Although teacher shopping has increased, Educator Warehouse is still in need of volunteers and monetary donations. Educator Warehouse accepts any donations and greatly appreciates school supply drives held throughout the community to help support classrooms in need.

In light of the new school year, Educator Warehouse will be holding its open house for new teacher shopping on August 17th from 3:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., August 18th from 10:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. for new and veteran teachers, and from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. for new and veteran teachers on August 19th. The following week, Educator Warehouse will be open Monday through Thursday from 2:00 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. Regular hours will resume the following Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday from 3:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m., and on the first and third Saturdays of the month from 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m.

Teachers are allowed one visit to the warehouse per quarter and must sign up ahead of time online to shop on a specific day for a designated amount. Busy teachers can also take advantage of Educator Warehouse’s convenient online shopping option if they are unable to shop in person. To shop in-person, visit Educator Warehouse on the Diggs-Latham Elementary School campus, located at 986 Hutton St. in Winston-Salem.

Interested in volunteering at the facility? Volunteers are crucial in keeping the operation running smoothly. Educator Warehouse is grateful for volunteers, regardless of whether they are able to commit to shifts daily, weekly, or monthly. Many volunteers at the warehouse find great joy and satisfaction in relieving teachers of their financial burdens, in addition to knowing that students will have all the supplies necessary to prepare them for a solid school year.

MOST NEEDED ITEMS FOR

Those looking to donate funds or supplies to Educator Warehouse can visit the facility’s webpage at www.wsfcs.k12.nc.us/ domain/6689 to find a list of commonly requested supplies, such as writing utensils, craft supplies, and notebook paper, in addition to personal hygiene items like hand sanitizer and Kleenex.

Those interested in volunteer can email Karel Chandler at kchandler3@msn.com or give her a call for any questions at 336-817-1673. To stay up-to-date on the latest announcements and news from Educator Warehouse, check out the facility’s Facebook page and follow @educatorwarehouse on Instagram.

Heather Norman Smith

Local Author Releases 5th Novel

‘Songs for a Sunday’

Author and North Carolina native Heather Norman Smith recently released her fifth novel, ‘Songs for a Sunday,’ with a bit of a different focus beyond just entertaining her readers. ‘Songs for a Sunday’ is set in Winston-Salem, NC, with topics of sisterhood, secrets, sacrifice, and salvation through Jesus Christ all woven into a novel that draws readers into the characters’ lives and relationships.

“This particular novel began with the title. The four words ‘Songs for a Sunday’ came to me in the shower and I knew it was a title, though I had no idea what the story would be. When I thought about those words, I had an image in my mind of an older model car and a couple out for a scenic drive. I had no other context around the image, but it became part of the first scene set in the 1960s timeline, in Chapter Two. Other than that, I actually don’t remember how the story came to me. Sometimes I jump in with an opening scene and try to figure out who the characters are and what they will do as I go along. Other times, I ‘interview’ the characters first to figure out who they are, and how the major plot will develop,” recalled Heather. With the initial idea in mind, the story and characters began to take shape and the writing process of ‘Songs for a Sunday’ began.

A Heartwarming Story of Family Ties and Faith

‘Songs for a Sunday’ is a dual timeline story and explores the lives of two sets of sisters, who struggle with their relationships over the years, as well as their own personal lives, with family secrets to face. This story illuminates that what you think family should be isn’t always what it is in reality, and how in the end, the love shared between the sisters is what gets them through the years. “As a writer and a Christian, I believe even a made-up story can help draw people to a very real God that wants to have a relationship with them. Because I love people, I want to share the hope of the gospel with them through my writing. There’s a message of faith in each of my five novels and I aim to present the gospel in some measure, organically, through the course of every story,” Heather said.

An Unexpected Character

As with most southern fiction, the setting of Winston-Salem, becomes a character itself, with its living and breathing history, much of which Heather incorporates into ‘Songs for a Sunday.’ “It was important to me to showcase a lot of the wonderful history of the city and surrounding area. I try to help the reader connect with the setting and develop an appreciation for it. Even in my books that are set in fictional towns, the settings are based on real places in North Carolina, and I want people to be endeared to our state through the story,” commented Heather.

Connecting with Readers

All writers want to connect with their readers on some level, and the feedback Heather has received shows that she accomplished that with ‘Songs for a Sunday. “The word I hear most often to describe my books is ‘heartwarming.’ One of the nicest compliments about ‘Songs for a Sunday’ is that a reader said the book made her ‘feel seen,’ because of the portrayal of the main character’s struggles as a stay-at-home mother of four. When it comes to matters of faith, I appreciate that readers often tell me the spiritual conversations in my book are done in a natural way that doesn’t feel forced. I want my readers to find themselves to some extent in my characters and know that we all share many of life’s experiences,” Heather said.

For more information on Heather Norman Smith, visit heathernormansmith.com. ‘Songs for a Sunday’ and Heather’s other novels can be found on Amazon and other online retailers. Heather enjoys speaking to church groups on topics such as using your gifts and talents to serve God and she is also available to speak to book clubs and writers’ groups.

Remodeling and Design Starts with Us

Given the increased amount of time everyone has spent at home these last few years, it is no wonder that kitchens have become more customized than ever before, and full-scale kitchen renovations and modest redesigns are in great demand. What has always been the most expensive room in the house is beginning to look like it, too, with greater attention given to kitchen design.

Our team begins the kitchen design process by asking questions to help us design an efficient space that elevates the daily rituals of living. Chopping vegetables and baking casseroles in a beautiful environment can be a rewarding experience especially if you love what you do. My own kitchen is a dream kitchen and because I am rarely home to enjoy cooking, I have discovered that design pays off. Kitchens have a hard job to do, and they need to look good while doing it. That is why when you plan your kitchen remodel or new construction, outfitting it is never cut and dry. Questions to think about in the process: Do you create the dream space that suits your every whim?… Do you stay neutral but utilitarian?... What is the best investment?... What if you sell your home?… Because your time in the kitchen needs to be both efficient and inspiring, your kitchen design should be unique and work for you, no matter what the future holds.

Begin thinking about your appliances and let’s get going.

Start with us and let us help you plan your kitchen remodel. We are the experts! June

Stone Mountain State Park

“Nature itself is the best physician.” – Hippocrates Stone Mountain State Park is divided between Wilkes and Alleghany counties of North Carolina. The stone mountain itself cannot be seen upon entering the park that shares its name, but the incredible 600-foot granite dome is well worth the visit. But this incredible stone dome is only one of the many scenic enticements that will demand your attention during your time at this must-visit state park. Stone Mountain State Park with its cascading waterfalls, meandering mountain streams, forests abundant with diverse wildlife, and scenic hiking trails are a few of the many reasons to make the trip.

Brief History

“Adopt the pace of nature: her secret is patience.” – Ralph Waldo Emerson

According to NCpedia.org, the stone mountain within the park “is light gray, medium-grained biotite granite developed from magma several miles deep in the earth. As erosion removed the overlying granitic rock, the resulting release in pressure caused the rock mass to move upward and intrude into older surrounding rocks sometime during the mid-Paleozoic era, 200 million years ago. Wolf Rock and Cedar Rock within the park are similar in structure. The proximity of these plutonic features to the Blue Ridge escarpment is of unusual geologic interest. As a result, Stone Mountain was designated as a National Natural Landmark in 1974.”

NCpedia goes on to say that “long before becoming a state park, Stone Mountain was settled by families of English, German, Irish, French, and Scots-Irish descent who built the log homes, farms, mills, churches and schools needed for self-sufficient communities. A restored 19th century mountain community, the Hutchinson Homestead, is located within the park.”

“Stone Mountain State Park was established in 1969 when the efforts of local citizens led to the acquisition of 1,463 acres of land. Part of the land was donated, and its value was used as the state’s matching fund for grants from the Land and Water Conservation Fund and the Appalachian Regional Commission supporting purchase of the initial land for the park. Since then, Stone Mountain State Park has grown to become one of the largest units in the state parks system. Its combination of highly significant biologic, geologic, scenic, recreational, and archaeological resources make it one of the premier units of the system.”

Recreation

“The earth has music for those who listen.” – William Shakespeare

The state park website lists the numerous activities and amenities as:

Camping

• Tent sites (including backpacking sites)

• Trailer and RV sites (some with electric and water hookups)

• Group tent sites

• Dump station

• Showers

• Firewood

Activities

• Hiking (20 miles)

Amenities

Amphitheater

• Horseback riding (10 miles) Picnic Shelters

• Fishing Bath House

• Picnicking Horse trailer parking

• Rock climbing

Unique Features

“Nature does not hurry, yet everything is accomplished.” – Lao Tzu

Although the 600-foot dome of Stone Mountain is an obvious unique feature, it is far from the only one. In addition to the significant scenic value of Stone Mountain, there is also Wolf Rock and Cedar Rock. The fact that you can rock climb and rappel in the winter, due to the south facing dome that has full sun all day making it quite warm, is quite an enticement for experienced climbers, although not recommended for beginners.

Another unique feature of the park is its magnificent waterfalls. The park includes four major waterfalls: Stone Mountain Falls, 200 feet in height; Middle Falls, a series of low cascades; Lower Falls, 25 feet in height; and Widow’s Creek Falls. The northwestern vistas, a panoramic look at the Blue Ridge mountains, are the most scenic in the park.

At the End of the Day

“Allow nature’s peace to flow into you as sunshine flows into trees.” – John Muir

Stone Mountain State Park has over 14,000 scenic acres to explore and enjoy with about 20 miles of moderate to strenuous hiking trails and 10 miles of horseback riding trails. You can also test your fly-fishing techniques with over 17 miles of designated trout waters.

Stone Mountain State Park is one of the largest parks in the state and one of my favorites in the NC park system. My hope is that you take the opportunity to visit this unique and amazingly beautiful state park and enjoy an unforgettable experience that will keep you coming back again and again.

Stone Mountain State Park is located at 3042 Frank Parkway, Roaring Gap, NC 28668. Park, visitor center, and park office hours vary by month. For more information visit their website at ncparks.gov/state-parks/stone-mountain-state-park or call (336) 957-8185.

4 Questions to Ask Yourself to Keep Your Content on Brand

This column is meant to serve as a resource for readers who seek inspiration and knowledge for building their own small business brands. Through actionable advice, find the encouragement to help you keep living your life with hustle and heart.

The moment your customer opens a social media app or glances at their email inbox, so much is fighting for their attention. As a small business owner, building a strong and consistent brand is crucial for fighting through the noise to attract and retain customers. Your brand is more than just a logo or a tagline; it represents the essence of your business and what sets you apart from the competition. Basically, your brand’s voice and messaging is what creates the relationship that your audience needs to feel trust and connection with your business. This month, we’re exploring four key questions to ask yourself that can help keep your content on brand and create a lasting impression on your target audience.

#1 What sets your soul on fire?

We all know that feeling when something truly ignites our passion. It’s that moment when our eyes light up, we can feel butterflies in our belly and there’s a true sense of purpose when we take a step forward. This question is one of the most important for you and your customer. It helps you stay true to your vision knowing what you set out to work on and why. Whether it’s creating exquisite handmade jewelry, curating a fashionable clothing line, or starting a social media agency, there’s something magical about pursuing what sets our souls on fire. It becomes the compass that guides your brand and highlights what you’re really all about so there’s no question.

#2 How do you differ from the competition?

In a world where businesses seem to pop up overnight, standing out can feel like an impossible effort some days. The key to embracing what feels like an oversaturated market is to take time to identify what makes your business different. Highlight your secret sauce, the exceptional service, the personalized touch, the moving mission or the quirky charm that only you can bring. Remember, standing out is the statement your business needs to thrive! It’s not about your pricing, location or brand visuals but really expressing why someone should choose you. Your brand’s job is to let people know why you’re different and what they can expect from you vs. your competitors.

#3 What do you want to be known for?

The first answer that may come into your brain is “success” but what does that truly mean to you? Outside of revenue potential, what would you and your business be proud to be known for? Even if you are a multitalented, multi-passionate business that offers multiple products or services there is something at the core that you want to shine brighter than anything else. Do you want to be known for your impeccable attention to detail, your ability to juggle multiple tasks flawlessly, or your knack for making customers feel like the queens they are? Maybe you know you have creme de la creme of baked goods that are healthy and beautiful or a team so well versed on legal matters that the contracts you create are flawless. Define what you want to be

known for, and then channel that energy into your content. Are you screaming it from a mountain? Can your customers and potential customers easily spot what this thing is within a few minutes of consuming your content?

#4 Why would someone work with you?

Now, let’s have a moment of real talk. We know we’re amazing, but sometimes we need to remind others of that, too! When it comes to answering the question of why someone should work with you, embrace your confidence and showcase your strengths. If you aren’t confident in what you do, how can you expect others to be?

Highlight things like your expertise, your exceptional problem-solving skills, your work ethic or quality of work, the way previous customers have expressed how you make them feel and more. Remember, you’re not just offering a service or product; you’re offering an experience that is uniquely you.

The most memorable brands are those who dare to be different.

As you embark on your journey of keeping your content on brand, remember that it’s your uniqueness that’s going to shine through and make an impact! None of us are going to be everyone’s cup of tea, and that’s a good thing. Embrace the challenges with a smile, knowing the people who want and need your business most will connect to your brand and find that they love your business almost as much as you do.

HUSTLE & HEART CHALLENGE

This month, assess a few different types of content categories that you offer, reviewing them to see what stands out to you as off brand vs. on brand. Where is there opportunity to bring in your brand’s voice and values more? How can you take your brand content to the next level by infusing what makes your business unique?

One of a Kind Style

Now a “seasoned” small business owner — after three exciting years spreading joy through her Blue Jean Boutique — the talented Amanda Benedict is the spirit and energy behind this one-of-a-kind business.

Amanda’s vision has always been one of sharing love and kindness at every turn, and as part of that mission, she gives 100% of her time and efforts to making every customer and every fellow creative entrepreneur feel special.

THE INSPIRATION

Then there’s the backstory that her personal idol has always been Dolly Parton — quite the role model! — and you’ll feel some very definite Dolly vibes at Blue Jean Boutique. Through her years of working in retail and getting to know so many people, Amanda has molded a successful small business while staying true to herself and her beliefs. Isn’t that exactly what Dolly would do?

She’s known for assuring customers that every item at Blue Jean Boutique is personally selected to make them look good, feel good, and even do good! Her unique, sometimes whimsical, designs are appealing on so many levels — and from apparel and accessories to gifts and stylish jewelry, there’s always a treasure to lift your spirits and maybe even spark your style game!

August 2023 | 49

Regular followers of the Blue Jean Boutique certainly know the phrase #womancrushwednesday — where Amanda spotlights something different on their social media pages — a female hero or icon, or friend/family member — maintaining the spirit of empowering women and brightening that midweek work day!”

FALL IS FOR CELEBRATING!

Think fondly of your most favorite pair of jeans: They’re loved, loyal, and beyond comfortable, right? And that feeling is something you always can’t wait to get back to, which is also the goal for every Blue Jean Boutique visitor. Whether you share a fun pop-up experience with Amanda, or fall in love with items online (where you can shop 24/7!), you’ll always want a return visit. Every day brings something new at Blue Jean Boutique, and Amanda couldn’t be more grateful for how far she’s come.

“This August we will be celebrating three years in business!” she says proudly. “We had our launch party on my 31st birthday — July 29, 2020, and then launched our website on August 1st.”

To commemorate the anniversary, Blue Jean Boutique will offer special giveaways during the month of August, including a free bracelet with a purchase of $35 or more from the website. They will also offer free shipping all month, and a free fun sticker with each purchase at their August pop-up events.

Look for the launch of a cute new line of graphic tee dresses in August, too. “I’m very excited about these new items, and can’t wait to show customers what I’ve been working on over the summer!” she adds. “This fall we will also have a rock music collection inspired by my dad and his love of ‘Old Time Rock & Roll’,” says Amanda “Our Jacket-of-the-Month releases start in September, and each month you will be able to pre-order a limited-edition jacket! All are hand-finished one at a time, and available through the end of each month, when the next new style launches.”

WHERE TO FIND BLUE JEAN BOUTIQUE

Amanda is also thrilled to be back at Vintage Market Days of the Piedmont Triad, August 25-27, at the Greensboro Coliseum Special Events Center. An upscale, vintageinspired indoor/outdoor market, Vintage Market Days features original art, antiques, clothing, jewelry, home decor, and other handmade treasures.

Blue Jean Boutique also loves showcasing other female creatives, and collaborating with other female entrepreneurs wherever possible.

As for the rest of the year, Amanda looks forward to returning to some of her favorite pop-up events across the south, including Christmas Carousel in Raleigh, The Bizarre Bazaar in Richmond, Vintage Market Days in Asheville, Raleigh, and Bristol, and her favorite local event, Shopping on the Farm in High Point.

“In addition, we will be adding some new cities to our schedule this fall, including Charleston, Nashville, and Memphis!” adds Amanda.

CONNECTIONS ARE KEY

When she first started out, and there wasn’t always a successful means to reach a large audience outside of family and friends, Amanda credits the popular Southern Charm at the Farm for providing her big break. “They were the first established show to accept me as a vendor, and also where I launched the Mobile Boutique (aka Dolly!) in October of 2021.” Her love for local shows and meeting new people has only grown!

Adding another fun, creative layer to her busy days, Amanda also loves sharing her podcast — side-by-side with friend and co-host Brittany Kues — with her customers and fellow small business owners! Appropriately named Dreamer to Entrepreneur, the two enthusiastically share their own personal experiences of launching new businesses, while also juggling mom life. “Brittany and I strive to make our conversations centered around uplifting and encouraging other female entrepreneurs,” she says.

Experience all the feels — and hopefully indulge yourself with some fun wardrobe additions — when you shop with Bluejeanboutiquenc.com. Follow them on Facebook and Instagram @bluejean.boutique for news and updates on the Mobile Boutique and upcoming pop-up events. Reach Amanda at 336-6863993, or by email at bluejeanboutiquenc@gmail.com.

On the Road Again: Miami

Typically in this column, we cover how to spend seven days in a particular state. However, some states pack too much of a punch to cover all at once. When we last visited Florida, we discussed a week-long itinerary for the Florida Keys. North of the Keys sits its gateway, Miami, with beaches, culture, cuisine, and nature that deserves its own lengthy visit. Here’s how to spend seven days in the spicy city of Miami, Florida.

Day 1: Neighborhood Matters

If you’re interested in a tropical beach vacation, make a beach hotel, resort, or condo rental be your home base. If you’re more interested in getting a taste of Miami’s culture, nightlife, and shopping, I highly suggest settling into the busting Brickell or artsy Wynwood neighborhoods of Miami. Brickell carries prime shopping, upscale dining, and offers premium water views. Wynwood is an art and graffiti-lover’s dream, holds one-of-a-kind eateries, and is home to some of Miami’s best nightlife. Renting a car is optional, based on how confident of a driver you are in somewhat crazy and chaotic driving conditions. Depending on the area and time of year, parking can be pricey and problematic, making Uber or Lyft a competitive option with half the hassle.

Day 2: Explore Tourist Hotspots

Visitors have likely heard of attractions such as the Calle Ocho Walk of Fame near Downtown Miami, Little Havana, the Wynwood Walls, and South Beach’s Art Deco buildings along the beach. Consider your interests and spend a day knocking tourist must-sees off your bucket list, especially if beach weather is less than ideal. Various tour companies also offer walking and luxury car tours of Miami that cover some of Miami’s biggest sights in an organized, pre-planned fashion to take the pressure off visitors who are wary of navigating the hectic traffic.

Day 3: Key Biscayne

For a more peaceful beach experience than South Beach, head down to Crandon Beach on Key Biscayne with ample parking, hiking and birding trails, and white sand for relaxing. Locals often visit Key Biscayne beaches to escape the urban chaos, while nature lovers enjoy the various coastal birds present on shore. Golfers can play at Crandon Golf at Key Biscayne, while bikers can take a scenic route down Fossil Reef Bike Trail. Another positive? There’s even a Starbucks on Crandon Boulevard for beach goers in need of a morning or afternoon pick-me-up before returning to the craziness of Miami.

Day 4: Water Sports

There are a plethora of water adventures to embark on in and around Miami, even for beginners with no experience in kayaking, stand-up paddleboarding, or jet skiing. Go with a guide or find affordable kayak and SUP rentals around Biscayne Bay. Vanessa at Nature and Paddleboard Adventures takes experienced and first-time stand-up paddleboarders through canals and mangroves to see birds, fish, and manatees before stopping at Sandspur Island (also referred to as “Raccoon Island”) to make nice with friendly island raccoons. To book these highly-rated adventures, visit www. naturepaddleboardadventures.com.

Day 5: Visit the Everglades

It wouldn’t be a true trip to south Florida without seeing Everglades National Park. Rental car users will have no issue making the somewhat lengthy trek to the Everglades for an airboat tour and the opportunity to see wildlife such as alligators, snakes, and maybe even an elusive panther. No rental car? Tour companies often offer pick-up and drop-offs from Miami to the Everglades, although these tours tend to be a bit pricier than organized tours starting at the Park. Travel sites such as Viator.com or Tripadvisor.com are great resources for finding the perfect Everglades tour.

Day 6: Pick a Pass

What’s great about the various hotels and resorts in Miami, Miami Beach, and South Beach are the option for non-guests to purchase day passes to pool and beach clubs with beach chairs, pool access, spa access, and convenient dining options. Passes range anywhere from $30 to $100 per guest, depending on the location. Adult day passes for Eden Roc’s pool and beach access are $60, but allow for a luxury experience for those staying inland looking to spend the day by the water. Looking for a rooftop pool without heading across the causeway? Hyatt Centric Brickell’s luxurious rooftop pool can be accessed for $40 per adult in a convenient, centrally-located location. Visit www.resortpass.com to peruse the various day passes Miami hotels and resorts have to offer.

Day 7: Depart Miami

Since traffic can be heavy and unpredictable, head to MIA (Miami International Airport) much earlier than expected to catch your flight home. Since MIA is one of the nation’s busiest airports, keep in mind the fluctuating wait times for airport security and check-in, as long lines can also slow travelers down.

We’re Back and Hungry for Another Great Year!

The eighth annual Men Who Cook competition, presented by Atrium Health Wake Forest Baptist and HanesBrands, will showcase the talents of local male leaders who are amateur chefs and their teams as the Family House hosts its popular fundraiser on August 19th in the Forsyth Barn at Legacy Stables & Events located at 4151 Thomasville Road in Winston-Salem. About 400 partygoers will get to taste savory samples crafted by the chefs and then vote for their favorite ones through tips that are donated to the Family House. Last year’s event was a record-breaking success, with proceeds netting more than $183,000.

“This is such a fun and exciting event, bringing families together over food, and truly represents the togetherness, hospitality and love we

provide at the Family House,” said Kathy Carr, executive director of SECU Family House.

The 45-room Family House is an alternative to a hospital waiting room or an expensive hotel for people coming to Winston-Salem for out-of-town medical care. The staff provides friendship, support and affordable accommodations for adult patients and caregivers who have been referred by Atrium Health Wake Forest Baptist, Novant Health Forsyth Medical Center or Trellis Supportive Care.

The Family House has hosted folks from 96 North Carolina counties and 45 states and has served more than 48,000 overnight guests since opening in 2011. Guests stay for a nominal overnight fee of $40 per night thanks to donations and events like Men Who Cook that help to keep rates affordable.

“Men Who Cook” Fires Up Family Friendly Fundraiser

SECU Family House Board Chair Heather Bolt Mikeal shared, “I’ve been to a lot of nonprofit events, and I can say for sure that ours is the most fun. It’s a great time to socialize and, most importantly, our biggest fundraiser of the year. Watching the evolution of the event, from Bridger Field House, then through the pandemic years, and now at Legacy Stables, it’s been incredible. Being able to fill such a large venue really goes to show you just how fun people in the community find this event. Not only that, but it also shows how important hospitality is to the fabric of Winston-Salem, and the Family House is such a good example of that.”

Men Who Cook chefs create their own recipes, from appetizers to desserts, and are allowed a sous chef for assistance during the evening. To entice the healthy competition, judges’ prizes will be awarded to the winning chefs. Early online judging through “tipping” will also be available at familyhousews.org/men-who-cook.

Guests can expect some delectable dishes like tastings from past years which included Hawaiian pork sliders, smoked brisket mac n cheese, shrimp and grits, and more!

Some of our amateur chefs this year will include Chief William Penn, Winston-Salem Police Chief; Tim Lowe, President of Lowes Foods; Joey Perkins, Partner at Cannon & Company; Neil Piner & Jeremiah Phillips with SECU; and a Winston Under 40 team from Greater Winston-Salem!

Individuals who wish to support the event in advance may purchase a Wooden Spoon Sponsorship which includes two reservations and a listing in the souvenir program for $500. Tickets may also be purchased for $100 for one or $1,250 for a reserved table (admits 10). To purchase a sponsorship contact Erin Craver at the SECU Family House at 336.793.2822 or Erin.Craver@ familyhousews.org.

Depress the Brakes and Rev Up the Libido!

A simple yet complex question to yourself is, “How’s my libido?” This threeword question can give you so much insight on your level of stress both psychologically and physiologically. We’re going to have some girl talk on all things related to sexual desire.

Let’s get some lingo straight: sexual desire and libido can be used interchangeably. Sex drive is different; this can be perceived as vital for existence (like eating and drinking) and can also invoke shame if you feel you have no sex drive.

Sexual desire starts in the brain, not in our lady parts as you may have thought. Something has to be perceived as pleasurable in the brain before the body can respond. In order for the brain to see something as pleasurable, most of the time, we have to remove any impediments or “brakes.”

Let’s give two different scenarios for a better understanding. You have a full day of scheduled appointments for work and your babysitter cancels. Your husband comes home from work and kisses you on the neck while you are washing a pile of dishes after a long day of trying to juggle work, kids, and random socks thrown throughout the house. In this case, the brakes are fully engaged and being intimate feels like another thing on the “to do” list. Another scenario, you have a great night of sleep the night before and a smooth sailing day at work. Then you come home to a clean house, the kids’ homework is done, and have a quick, healthy meal already planned. Your husband comes home with a fresh bouquet of flowers and kisses you on the neck and you are intrigued and excited. The runway is clear and ready for take off!

If you are in a committed relationship, have a conversation with your partner on the “brakes” in your life and if there are things he or she can do to help. So many times the other person thinks it is them. Give some concrete examples and ways to help you feel more pleasure in all aspects of your life. And as a side note on

sexual pleasure, different techniques affect women in different wayswhat works great for you may not work at all for someone else.

In the beginning of a relationship, we experience more “spontaneous desire,” and the novelty can have you ready to go wherever and whenever. This can eventually change to “responsive desire” when the brain decides if something is pleasurable depending on whether there are any “brakes” in the way.

We’ve discussed some of the psychological aspects of sexual desire. Let’s move into the physiological side. From a physical health perspective, poor glucose regulation can cause a decrease in libido. If you don’t have adequate blood flow flowing through the female genitalia (and male genitalia too), you won’t have much of a libido. Certain medications can cause a decrease in libido. Some examples are: antidepressants, statins, beta blockers, hormonal birth control, heartburn medication, and cannabis. If you are a female that is still menstruating, your libido could be cyclical depending on where you are in your cycle. After ovulation, you may experience more anxiety which decreases your sexual desire. In menopause and beyond, due to the decline of estrogen and progesterone, you may experience more vaginal dryness which can cause sex to be painful which certainly doesn’t register in the brain as pleasure.

So what can you do to increase your libido?

• Stress Management: refer back to my column in June’s Forsyth Woman issue for the different types of stress and what to do.

• Communication: have an honest and open conversation with your partner. It is also helpful for both of you to track the time of day and month that are a green light and share those times.

• Keep blood sugar stable throughout the day: eat a nutrientdense, whole foods diet. In addition, have a consistent exercise routine that involves weight training.

• Get to the root cause of why you are taking certain medications and if it is possible to improve through lifestyle and diet. Talk to your medical provider about more extensive labs.

• Menopause and beyond: look into bioidentical hormone replacement therapy to increase sex hormones, try an organic lubricant, and give yourself some extra time for foreplay.

Overall, a holistic approach that addresses both psychological and physiological contributors to low libido is often needed. Simple lifestyle changes and improved communication can go a long way, along with medical interventions as needed. The key is awareness of how different factors may be impacting you, followed by action to address the root causes.

Strategies for Building Wealth and Achieving Financial Independence

The desire to achieve financial independence and establish lasting wealth is something that resonates with everyone. It may sometimes feel like an unattainable dream, but with the right strategies and mindset, considerable progress can be made towards your financial goals. Here, I will share practical and effective strategies we implement with our clients to help them build wealth and work towards their financial goals.

First, it is essential to set clear and specific financial goals. Whether it is saving for a down payment on a house, paying off debt, or retiring comfortably, having tangible targets keeps us focused and motivated on our wealth-building journey.

Creating a budget and sticking to it is the foundation of sound financial management. By tracking our income and expenses, prioritizing savings, and being purposeful with our spending, we can take control of our finances and allocate funds towards wealthbuilding activities.

The most crucial step is prioritizing saving and investing. Saving should be a non-negotiable habit, and a portion of our income should be allocated towards savings and investments on a regular basis. Automatic transfers to our investment accounts can help ensure consistent contributions.

It is important to minimize debt and manage credit effectively. Highinterest debt can hinder our wealth-building efforts, so it is crucial to prioritize paying off debts, starting with those carrying the highest interest rates. Responsible credit management, such as paying bills on time and keeping low credit card balances, will save us on interest payments and maintain a healthy credit score.

Embracing the importance of lifelong learning and upskilling, we make a valuable investment in ourselves, empowering personal growth, and opening doors to new opportunities. By staying updated on industry trends, seeking professional development opportunities, and expanding our skill set, we open doors to better job opportunities, higher income potential, and increased financial stability.

Professional guidance from a financial advisor or wealth manager is also worth exploring. They can provide personalized guidance tailored to your specific financial situation, optimize your investment portfolio, navigate complex financial decisions, and develop a customized wealth-building strategy.

Building wealth and achieving financial independence requires discipline, smart decision-making, and a long-term perspective. Remember, building wealth is a journey, so let us stay committed, be patient, and take comfort in knowing that each step we take brings us closer to our financial aspirations.

SUMMERTIME LOW COUNTRY BOIL

August is the perfect time to gather friends and family for a classic backyard feast, and what better dish to serve than a Low Country Boil! This easy-to-make meal not only feeds a large group, but also offers a great medley of various seafood options. The best part is that you can customize it to suit your taste preferences.

To create this mouthwatering feast, you’ll need some essential ingredients such as corn on the cob (4-6 cobs), sausage (1 pack of 4), shrimp (1.5-2 lbs), and a bag of red potatoes. However, I highly recommend adding some lobster tails (generally 4) and crab legs (2 lbs) into the mix. Apart from these, you’ll need a large pot or a turkey fryer (if you prefer to cook outdoors), a couple of lemons, an orange and a white onion. The quantity of ingredients depends on the number of people you’re serving, but the following proportions generally serve around four people.

Let’s get started with the cooking process. Fill your large pot or turkey fryer halfway with water, and bring it to a rolling boil. For an authentic and flavorful twist, add a generous amount of seasoning to the water. Old Bay seasoning is a popular choice, readily available in most stores. However, you can also explore seafood boil-specific seasonings at farmers markets or specialty stores. While your water is boiling, slice the cobs of corn in half, slice the red potatoes in half, slice your sausages into bite size slices and devein the shrimp (if not already deveined.)

Once the seasoned water is boiling, add the halved lemons and orange. Next, add the halved red potatoes to the pot. From this point, it’s time to start the countdown. Set a 20-minute timer, marking each step accordingly. At the 5-minute mark (15 minutes remaining), add diced andouille sausage (or any sausage of your choice) and onions. After 5 more minutes (10 minutes remaining), toss in the corn and crab legs. Finally, after 7 minutes (3 minutes remaining), add the shrimp and lobster tails. I also like to add more old bay seasoning throughout the cook as I’m adding each ingredient to get everything very well seasoned and full of flavor.

Once everything is done and your timer is up, turn off the burner and allow the boil to rest for a few minutes while you prepare the table. I suggest using a tablecloth or newspaper as a cover and arranging an assortment of hot sauces(Cackalacky Pepper sauce and old bay hot sauce are my favorites), melted butter, and crackers or cornbread alongside the boil.

Next, you’ll pour the contents of the pot onto the table or your chosen serving area and season all over with more old bay (or seafood seasoning of choice), squeeze some fresh lemon juice all on top and now it’s finally time to dig in! Enjoy!

Celebrate National Girlfriend Day

Some things are worth quibbling over, and one of them seems to be the origins of National Girlfriend Day. Some believe that it started as a way for the greeting card companies to sell more cards. Others claim it was invented in 2002 by authors Elizabeth Butterfield and Kathleen Laing who wrote a book about girlfriend getaways. But who knows? It may have started in a way we’ll never know. The important thing is that August 1st is a day to celebrate your girlfriends. This year, National Girlfriend Day arrives on a Monday, and, by the time you read this article, it may have already passed. That’s why I’d like to propose that we enterprising women claim the entire month of August to celebrate one another. Who’s with me on this?

ALL ABOUT US

Now, before we get to the many ways we might do so, I feel obliged to clarify that this special day isn’t about boyfriends showering girlfriends with chocolate and roses - that’s what February 14th is all about. This is a girl thing if ever there was one! I’ve always been fascinated with female friendships, knowing in my heart that I do not know where I would be without them. Our closest girlfriends – as opposed to friends of convenience – are there with us and for us, through thick and thin. They give us a:

• listening ear

• ready-made support system

• reality check

• shoulder to cry on

• buddy to go a little crazy with

• and something dang close to unconditional love

It’s little wonder that the research suggests:

• The average woman has six best friends in her lifetime (that seems high to me; I mean “best”?)

• 1 in 10 women say they have more fun with their BFF than with their partner

• 25% say their BFF knows them better than their partner ( hmmm…)

• The average female friendship for women over 55 is 23 years

• The average female friendship lasts 16 years (what? Way too low!)

• 47% of women wish they could spend more time with their BFF (count me in!)

CELEBRATE YOUR GIRLFRIENDS

They already know you love them but demonstrating that love and celebrating your bond is what memories are made of. See how many of the following ideas you can pursue this month. As you do so, be sure to tell her that you are reaching out in the spirit of National Girlfriend Day and encourage her to do the same with her circle of besties:

• Text or post a photo of the two of you from “back when”

• Buy one of those greeting cards and mail it – the old-fashioned way

• Tell her the three qualities that you most admire or appreciate about her

• Share your favorite memory of the two of you: “Remember that time when…?”

• Send her flowers

• Send her a gift card for her favorite site or store

• Send her a current book on a topic she is interested in

• Make her lunch or dinner

• Have a picnic in a park or local vineyard

• Plan an adventure: shop in a different town, try a new restaurant, take a hike in an unusual location

• Stay with the tried and true: go to your favorite shopping destination, restaurant, hiking location

• Indulge a little or a lot: mani-pedi, facial, massage, spa day? You decide. You’re worth it!

• Gather your girlfriends who hang out together and have a group celebration. My niece Megan invented the “All Day Brunch” which has become legendary back in Connecticut!

• Say “I love you”

And if all of this sounds a bit too frivolous or over the top, remind yourself of the many ways that your girlfriends enrich your life. Priceless, right? Now go for it!

An Opulence of Choice in Senior Retirement

Log home villages as rustic as Grizzly Adams and cosmopolitan high-rises with posh leather couches are popping up all over the country, though there’s a qualifier: you must be 55 years or older to live there. A surge in senior living construction, dating back to the mid-2000s, has introduced a variety of styles and themes. If shiny new things garner attention, plenty of distracting novelties have popped up in most cities. But if we brush away the glitter, what’s exposed at the core of the community?

First, let’s look back even further. A major shift in senior housing started to occur much earlier, benefiting senior living and the hundreds of thousands of members now living in retirement communities. By introducing offerings outside of care services, retirement communities were able to entice a much larger pool of the senior population. With the inclusion of independent living, which includes single-family homes, apartments, and condo-style living spaces, seniors were afforded an interesting new option of a resort-type lifestyle.

To make the retirement communities more appealing than living at home, they needed to offer something special, something that took care of a want. This is where unique services and amenities succeed. They’re implemented

into the lifestyle that removes stressors and gives back valuable time better spent elsewhere. For instance, cooking can be a wonderful experience, but it can also be a burden. Home maintenance has probably never been referred to as a wonderful experience, and is most certainly a burden. Removing these daily chores is part of the retirement community lifestyle.

In addition to removing bothersome chores such as cooking, cleaning, and maintenance, newly reclaimed time should be filled with something better. Whether socializing with new friends, exploring a new hobby, or doubling down on an old one, it beats the other stuff.

Programs have come and gone, been tweaked, and refined, though the purpose of their existence remains to make people happy. Good food, good people, good fun. Socialization, wellness, and dining activities are centered around retirement that infuses excitement into each day.

Social activities such as group outings to museums, hiking, and sporting events, combined with wellness-focused programming such as aquatic aerobics, archery, cardio classes, and more, form a robust calendar to keep any resident active.

Homestead Hills, a local favorite for the WinstonSalem senior audience, remains true to its mission to deliver outstanding services in an environment that promotes Members living longer, healthier, happier lives. One of the best ways to remain independent is to maintain one’s health - both body and mind. By offering an amazing choice of amenities, excellent services, and a focus on independence, Members are compelled to engage in life.

With so many options in the senior living arena, make sure not to succumb to the newest and flashiest for opulence’s sake, but to the community that offers you what you want. It can be a bear of a decision, not to be taken lightly. As the saying goes, it’s not what’s on the outside; it’s what’s on the inside that counts.

The Lifestyle Advisors at Homestead Hills are ready to answer questions about their lifestyle and help you find a community that is right for you. Call (336) 770-2024 to start the conversation.

The PERFECT RETIREMENT

Winston-Salem Open

Offers a World-Class Experience and Community Support!

It won an award for “tournament of the year,” has a global audience of nearly 5 million, is broadcast in more than 120 countries around the world, and is in your backyard.

In a few short weeks the world’s tennis community will focus its eyes on the Twin Cities as it prepares for another installment of the Winston-Salem Open, an Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP) men’s event that serves as the last stop on the calendar before the final Grand Slam of the year – the U.S. Open in New York.

“Winston-Salem has a long, rich tennis history,” says Tournament Director Jeff Ryan. “People from around the world enjoy the Winston-Salem Open, whether they come visit us or enjoy watching the event on television. It’s a unique opportunity to have such a community and family-friendly setting for this kind of high-profile event. Fans have the chance to see the stars in action in one of the most intimate settings on the ATP Tour,” he added.

The tennis is only one facet of the event. Nearly each day of the week-long tournament, visitors can enjoy multiple special events, including a free kids’ day sponsored by Atrium Health Wake Forest Baptist, a clinic to raise funds for early detection of breast cancer through Earlier.org, or free on-court instruction for students during middle school and high school play days.

Tiffany Noel, a Winston-Salem native who grew up playing tennis, is a member of the East Forsyth High School Hall of Fame and played for Howard University on a scholarship, now serves on the tournament’s board of directors and hopes to bring more people to the event and to the game.

“We are continuing to look for new fans. It’s hard to explain how much atmosphere the Winston-Salem Open has if you haven’t experienced it,” Noel says. “In the bigger picture, though, we are devoted to our community and value our partnerships with local businesses, non-profits like Big Brothers Big Sisters and the Crosby Scholars, and our huge network of volunteers who are gracious with their time and talents,” she continued.

The Winston-Salem Open does more than support the city and county in words. Since resuming after COVID-19 canceled the 2020 event, the Winston-Salem Open has donated more than $50,000 to Winston-Salem Forsyth County Schools middle school athletics, funding programs and activities for young people in the community.

The tournament also supports community tennis programs through the Kimberley Park Tennis Association and Winston-Salem Tennis, Inc. This type of financial support helps public tennis grow in Winston-Salem, especially in areas where low and no-cost programming is vital.

Throughout August, the tournament will host different special events around the county, including one in partnership with Forsyth Woman and Tucker’s Tap Yard on August 3 for a special Girls’ Night Out. The perfect match – a cocktail for you and a ticket that gives back to the community.

Tickets are on sale now at winstonsalemopen.com and begin as low as $11.

PEOPLE OF PROMINENCE SERIES

Clare Fader

Clare Fader is a local real estate and cultural heroine. She adopted WinstonSalem as her home 25 years ago and has remained steadfast in her love of this city. She has shown her allegiance to the city in countless ways as a musician, hospitality industry superstar and ultra-popular real estate agent.

Clare spoke to us about her journey here in our fair city and how she became the Founder of Fader Real Estate.

“For those who are lost, there will always be cities that feel like home.” Simon Van Booy, Everything Beautiful Began After

What originally brought you to Winston Salem?

My parents who were physicians were recruited here to the city by Wake Forest Baptist from Canada. I was at university in Montreal at the time. I decided to join them here in 1998. I started a band, singing and traveling with them all along the east coast. Some people today still know me from my time as a musician.

Were you always aspiring to be a realtor or was it something you backed into?

This was completely accidental. At the time I started in this business, I had a realtor I trusted who suggested I get my real estate license. He always said, “You obsess more about real estate than I do.” I have always had a passion for what I call “stray houses.” I love seeing the bones of a house and seeing its potential. Renovating a great house is an art form to me. And even my time in the hospitality industry as a server taught me how to “read” people and be of service. I was getting burned out on the musician life and decided in 2007 to go into real estate.

What should people look for in a real estate agent?

People need somebody that they feel safe with. They need an agent who has their back. It is important that an agent not push people or rush people into the sale. This is not a game about sales and numbers, it is about how people are helped and guided and advised.

What would you say are your company’s core objectives?

We always strive to serve our community. I cannot run the business any other way. If I can somehow promote and make my city shine for others, it makes it so people yearn to move here. I love pushing our local industry and the complexity behind our innovation and creativity. Winston-Salem is an amazing place to live and work. People from all over the world are seeing that and I want us to be the introduction many have to our beautiful city.

What really excites you about the industry you are in?

I just love it when I drop off clients who are new to our city and they walk to Mozelle’s for dinner, or they visit one of our galleries and they decide to move here - when I have proven my case that our city is so fantastic. I adore telling people origin stories about all the amazing things that have happened here over the course of history. I love selling the city. I love surprising even people who have lived here for several years about the many layers of my city. I love listening to people tell me about their lifestyles and envisioning exactly where they should live, what neighborhood would best suit them.

Tell me about the current and future environment for Winston-Salem as you see it.

The pandemic was a tumultuous and uncertain time for so many reasons; however, one positive outcome was that people realized you could often live and work from anywhere. It opened up the idea that you could live in a city such as ours and still conduct work remotely for companies elsewhere. We weren’t just serving people as real estate agents who worked here locally. Growth is certainly unpredictable, but I do know that people can bring their high-paying jobs to our city and can feed into our economy with dollars as consumers. The world is taking

notice of this city as a place where you won’t get lost in the shuffle as you would in a big metropolis.

If someone wants to become a real estate agent, what advice would you offer to them?

I met a new agent recently who said they look forward to being able to make their own schedule in real estate. Uh, I would offer a word of caution to anyone who thought this was true. You need to be flexible and accessible. New agents need to know how to say “yes” to get the job done and be of service to your clients. You need to find ways to always add value for your clients. This is more of a service industry than a sales industry. And you must always be marketing your business. Let people know what you do and what you bring to the table for them. It is a wonderful way to be a service provider and promoter of where you live.

Who would you nominate next for this People of Prominence series?

I nominate Shereen Gomaa, who created Delicious by Shereen. This is a catering company that empowers recently resettled refugees in our community to use their cooking skills to support their families. The business she’s created does so much more than simply prepare food. It acts as a bridge between communities, helping new residents to Winston-Salem feel valued. She is incredibly determined to make the business succeed. During the pandemic, when most events were canceled, she pivoted to making prepared meals that have become a favorite part of many local families’ weekly meal plans. I’m grateful for Shereen and the way her business makes our community a more inclusive and delicious place. Through food!

winston-salem picnic ladies

Putting a New Twist on an Old American Tradition

You’ve probably been to a traditional picnic, where family and friends bring blankets and food and gather outside to eat, drink, and socialize. But there’s a new twist on the old American tradition with ‘pop-up picnics,’ and the Winston-Salem Picnic Ladies take this party style to a whole new level!

Across the country, during the COVID-19 lockdowns, any way people could gather and have interaction became popular, and pop-up picnics became the best way to celebrate a special occasion. But before the nationwide craze began, sisters Sarah Croom Bradford and Mollie Bradford fell in love with the picnic business after assisting their friend Keeley Spagnola with several picnics, as well as hosting their own family celebrations. They soon realized they had found their niche!

“In March 2022, we bought the picnic business from our friend Keeley and rebranded it to Winston-Salem’s Picnic Ladies. It is so rewarding to create a dreamy atmosphere as the backdrop to our clients’ special celebrations. From proposals to date nights, bachelorette brunches, and baby showers, we genuinely love bringing smiles to others’ faces,” said Mollie.

MOMENTS TO REMEMBER

Each picnic planned by Winston-Salem’s Picnic Ladies is one of a kind and customized to fit the individual client’s preferences, including color scheme, theme, etc., but this duo adds a little something extra: a beautiful setting!

“We offer curated pop-up experiences perfect for an elevated date night, social gathering, or proposal, and host wedding picnic services at our family’s private 54 acre farm and venue, The Little Chapel at Haven Ridge. The great thing is, Mollie lives on the property in our inn, so we are always close by to lend a helping hand if needed, but give all picnic clients their privacy. We greet each guest and welcome them to their picnic, then return for post-picnic clean up,” Sarah commented.

All picnic packages include: private venue at the farm, water carafe and beverages (champagne is standard), set up, clean up/breakdown, utensils, plates, cups, decor, pillows, rug(s), and much more with every detail covered.

“Part of what makes our picnics so special is that they are secluded! Our clients choose from scenic areas like our lakeside or waterfall, meadows, or chapel. We currently have a couple of exciting new additions in the works on the farm’s grounds. A tiny cottage and a 1500 square foot glass solarium that will offer 360 degree views of the property. We’re very excited to see how we can grow!” stated Mollie.

While the Picnic Ladies do not cater the events, they offer restaurant meal pick-up service and partner with many locally owned businesses when an event permits. Clients are also welcome to have food catered or delivered.

Winston-Salem’s Picnic Ladies pride themselves in attention to detail and the beautiful eclectic items give each picnic that little something extra. “Our collection of inventory is curated from shopping pieces that catch our eye, thrifting, and even some family pieces, like our grandmothers’ china. We love supporting and collaborating with local businesses, so we do enjoy shopping and adding to what we have to make each picnic special and never duplicated,” Sarah said.

Picnic Ladies are now accepting events for fall 2023 and beyond.

Is intermittent fasting a fad diet? I feel like I hear and see it all over social media and the magazine racks. Fasting is not anything new. It’s been around for hundreds, maybe thousands of years! Mahatma Gandhi was famous for fasting in the name of social justice. Many religions have periods of fasting. Christians have Lent and the Jewish have Yom Kippur, just to name a few. If you have annual blood work, your doctor may suggest a fast before in order to get a true look at your cholesterol levels. What makes intermittent fasting different from fasting? Intermittent means occurring at irregular intervals; not continuous or steady. While a fast is typically going to be a full day or days, intermittent can mean that you simply have a shortened window of when you eat your daily meals, and you have longer periods of going without any caloric intake. Long continuous fasting also has benefits, but it consists of twenty-four hours or more and it should only be a part of your regimen once you have mastered and proven that intermittent fasting is OK for you individually.

Intermittent fasting, like most things, has its pluses and minuses! Looking at the pluses, intermittent fasting can help reduce blood glucose spikes, increase your mitochondria’s ATP production rates, assist with weight loss, give your digestive system a chance to rest and re-set as well as give your healthy cells an opportunity to sweep up and out the cells that have an unwanted mutation. On a lighter note, groceries have tripled in cost so if you’re cutting out a meal here and there, it might mean a cheaper grocery bill! Who wouldn’t mind saving a few extra dollars at the checkout line these days? It can also reduce your inflammation levels, and for some, increase your concentration abilities. If you have any health concerns, you will want the OK from your primary physician before starting an intermittent fasting protocol. The minuses can look like headaches, irritability (also known as hangry), and low blood sugar which may lead to dizziness or brain fog and

Intermittent Fasting: When, Why, Why Not?

even constipation due to a decrease in overall consumption (fiber is important, and all fiber is not created equal!).

The key to finding out what works for your body is to take on any intermittent fasting regimen slowly. Increasing your fasting window over time and making sure you aren’t cutting out too many calories or nutrients! If you go for too many hours without eating before you get your mind and body trained to do so, the negative side effects could hit you much harder than if you do it gradually. And if you try to do this gradually and still have negative side effects, it may mean that intermittent fasting isn’t a great option for you.

Breaking your fast and what you consume when taking on the ritual of Break-fast, should be full of nutrients, no matter what time of day that happens to be. Taking on intermittent fasting with a goal of increasing your focus or reducing your hunger cravings means you shouldn’t decrease your calorie intake during your eating window, it simply means you pack

more food and nutrients into your window. If weight loss is part of your goal in intermittent fasting, then cutting back on your caloric intake will be easier due to your smaller window of consumption. Try starting with your normal volume of food at your meals but minus one entire meal a day. This might mean skipping breakfast and only having coffee. Or skipping dinner, depending on what works best for you, your family and your schedule.

When considering intermittent fasting for men and women, when and how should be significantly different since men go through a full hormonal cycle every twentyfour hours and it takes women an average of twenty-eight days! Women need to be more cognizant of where they are in their hormonal cycle and use that as a gauge as to whether they should fast at all or need to reduce/increase their fasting hours or limit the number of days you fast per week. You can find a lot of good information on this via the web, but a reputable source, like Dr. Stephanie Estima or Dr. Aviva Romm are good choices when surfing the internet.

I see you!”

MARRIAGE HAS A GENERATIONAL IMPACT

YOUR MARRIAGE WILL IMPACT GENERATIONS. WHAT STORY WILL BE TOLD? WHAT LEGACY WILL BE LEFT?

It was dark, and I was not sure where the small little voice came from as I stood in the kitchen giving my wife a hug- “I see you!” I looked towards the staircase only to see this mop of curly brown hair poking around the corner, and before I could say a word, my sweet little girl, with drawn-out words and joy in her voice, said again- “I seeeee youuuuu!” As I moved towards her, she ran up the stairs wanting to be chased by Dad. As I tucked her back into bed, I was struck by the simplicity of her words and the profound implications-she was watching. She was a witness to her parent’s commitment and love and internalizing the significance of loyalty, dedication, and sacrifice.

OK—maybe she was not thinking any of that; she just saw us hugging one another and wanted me to chase her back upstairs. My wife says I am always looking for deep meaning in everything, guilty! Yet, have you ever stopped to think about the impact of your marriage on future generations, especially your children and grandchildren? They are watching whether we see it or not. Whether we are together or now separated, our marriages will have a ripple effect that extends beyond our own lives.

Through our years of working with couples and also sitting with them before they walk down the aisle, we have seen one common thread weave through every story-how their parent’s marriage and relationships have shaped their view of marriage. Family of origin and the picture painted for our children will have a generational impact and be carried on. What is the picture your marriage is painting or has? What story will unfold before your children, family, and friends? Together, let’s look at the significance of marriage and how it influences future generations:

1. FOUNDATION OF FAMILY. If we desire to live and leave a legacy, it will start with the foundation of family, the bedrock of our society. Marriage forms the foundation of the family unit, providing stability, love, and guidance for children. Our children will grow up in the environments we create. They’ll witness our love, conflicts, and how we navigate the highs and lows of life together. By providing stability, love, and a picture of marriage where your spouse comes first, we are laying the foundation for our children to build upon. Not a perfect foundation, but one where they see us fight for one another in the good and not-so-good times.

You may be reading this, and you and your children have experienced the pain of divorce, and it breaks our hearts to know this is the reality of many. Please know, even through a divorce and brokenness, you still have the opportunity to invest in and re-establish in the hearts of your children what a marriage can be. Yet remember, they are watching how you walk through a separation or divorce. Are you belittling your spousetheir father or mother? Are you being open with them about what’s taking place? Protect and nurture their hearts.

2. SPIRITUAL GROWTH. Living in a covenant of marriage is not always easy! My wife says I’m pretty perfect and don’t need to change a thing- NOT! Left to my own, there is no way I would be able to be the man I am called to be for her. I have to rely on God’s grace, develop sacrificial love, and cultivate forgiveness. The challenges we have faced, and the joys we have experienced have grown and shaped us. And guess what? Our children are watching. They see how we rely on God’s grace and

how our faith influences our actions. Faith, or the lack of will affect future generations. How is your faith shaping your marriage and children?

3. VALUES AND MORALS. I love hiking and backpacking, and one of the most important tools I need when “getting lost on purpose” is a compass. The compass serves as my guide, leading me on the right path forward. In marriage, we GET to demonstrate qualities such as love, integrity, and selflessness. These virtues become the compass shaping the values that children inherit. When they see us living these qualities, they learn what it means to be a person of character. As children see their parents live a life that honors one another and God, they are more likely to embrace those principles as they navigate their own lives and relationships.

4. HEALTHY ROLE MODELS. My wife and I have been married for 30 years, and I have always strived to be a healthy role model to our two girls. I have worked to display to my girls that they should settle for nothing less than a man that would treat them the way I treated their mom- with honor, respect, love, grace, and self-sacrifice. My children today look up to us. How they view us was not because we have a perfect marriage, the opposite is true. They watched as we navigated the difficult seasons and how we worked it out. They watched as we experienced the highs and celebrated together. Through every season, they watched as we attempted always to demonstrate what it meant to serve one another and build a healthy marriage.

Yes, your marriage has a generational impact and holds immense significance by providing the foundation for which your children will build their own family, spiritual growth, values, and legacy. Let’s strive to build a marriage that demonstrates to our children and those around us what it means to live a beautiful life that reflects grace, love, forgiveness, and hope. So the next time you are standing with your spouse embracing one another, look around the corner and maybe you will see a moppy head child standing there staring at you and with great joy saying, “I seeeee youuuuu!”

DIETING MYTHS

There is so much information at our fingertips. Googling a health and nutrition question will give you lots of answers, several conflicting with each other. Who should you believe? We once heard that low-fat was the way to go. Then it was to eat fat but avoid sugar. And make sure you don’t eat too many eggs or it will raise your cholesterol! There are plenty of rules out there on what to eat, and what not to eat. So where should you begin? Let’s talk about some of the most popular statements out there when it comes to eating healthy and find out if there is some truth there, or if it’s just exaggerated.

“EATING HEALTHY IS EXPENSIVE.”

As a dietitian, I’ve heard this one a lot. Sure, the grocery store can be expensive but it’s not because healthy food is costly. If you are planning for what you’re going to purchase and cook at home throughout the week, you can eat healthy on a budget. You don’t have to purchase the best cut meat and you don’t have to purchase fresh fruits and vegetables that are not in season, when they are higher in price. When grocery shopping and aiming to choose healthier foods, plan out your meals. Look at what is in season and what’s on sale as you are making your grocery list. Most of the time, choosing balanced plate options that are whole foods and not processed can be less expensive. And guess what? They can be more filling and last longer in your body, so you need less food! Don’t forget to compare what you spend when eating out, not just your grocery store receipt. If you compare planning ahead and buying balanced options to cook at home with going out to eat, you’ll realize that eating at home and focusing on purchasing balanced options is more cost-effective than going out to eat.

“EATING LATE CAUSES WEIGHT GAIN.”

Timing of meals is important, but there is no magical time to stop eating each day. Research does not consistently show us that eating after a certain time causes weight gain. It’s important to eat at regular times throughout the day to fuel our bodies. If it means eating dinner at 8:00 pm because your kids had soccer practice until 7:30, don’t worry! Just make sure to fuel your body with a balanced snack to tide you over until 8:00 pm. The challenge that many people face is that they do not eat on a regular schedule. If you are eating dinner later in the evening, and you haven’t fueled your body properly throughout the day, you may be overly hungry by that point. And we all know what happens when we are too hungry - we choose higher calorie options and tend to overeat! The creamy alfredo pasta sounds much better than baked chicken, rice, and roasted broccoli. Your food choice and amount of food eaten because you are too hungry is what leads to weight gain, not the time you ate your meal.

“AVOID EATING _______ IF YOU WANT TO BE HEALTHY AND LOSE WEIGHT.”

There is a fill in the blank space there for a reason. That missing word may be fat or carbohydrates or gluten. You’ll notice that depending on who you talk to, there is something different in that space. Anytime that you are avoiding an entire type of food, it should be of concern. The three main sources of nutrients, called macronutrients, are carbohydrates, protein, and fat. Avoiding one of these will possibly cause your body to miss out on important nutrients. And these three macronutrients work well together to fuel our bodies throughout the day. It may not be flashy or give you a quick fix, but balanced eating and incorporating all food groups helps your body long-term. The amount of these food groups is what you should be focused on, not skipping any type of food completely. Note: There are certain medical conditions that may cause you to avoid a type of food. That is a diagnosis that a physician can help you determine and guide you through, as well as a registered dietitian.

“A CALORIE IS A CALORIE.”

As stated earlier, there are three macronutrients that are essential for our bodies throughout the day: protein, carbohydrates, and fat. And yes, these contain calories and are made up of different amounts of calories but 100 calories of candy is very different from 100 calories of high-fiber crackers, for example. If you were to eat 100 calories of candy, it will digest quickly and you will be hungry soon, if not immediately after. However, if you eat 100 calories of a high-fiber cracker, your body will be fuller because that food choice contains different nutrients that are more filling. That does not mean you should be avoiding candy completely if you love it! Just recognize that calories are not created equal and just counting calories will not help you improve your health and weight.

As nutrition information continues to increase on social media, through blogs and on the news, be aware that not all information has been proven through research and every person’s health journey is different. Use sound judgment and reach out to a registered dietitian if you have questions or want individualized nutrition information to help you reach your health goals!

CLASSIC VANILLA BEAN ICE CREAM

Let’s start with a timeless favorite: vanilla bean ice cream. To make this creamy delight, you’ll need 2 cups of heavy cream, 1 cup of whole milk, ¾ cup of granulated sugar, a pinch of salt, and the seeds of one vanilla bean. In a mixing bowl, whisk together the sugar, salt, and vanilla bean seeds. Add the heavy cream and milk, and whisk until the sugar is fully dissolved. Pour the mixture into an ice cream maker and churn according to the manufacturer’s instructions. Once churned, transfer the ice cream to a lidded container and freeze for a few hours until firm. Serve in cones or bowls and enjoy the pure simplicity of this classic treat.

TANGY LEMON SORBET

For those who prefer a refreshing and tangy treat, lemon sorbet is the way to go. To make this citrusy delight, you’ll need 1 cup of freshly squeezed lemon juice, 2 cups of water, and 1 cup of granulated sugar. In a saucepan, combine the water and sugar, stirring over medium heat until the sugar dissolves completely. Remove from heat and let the syrup cool. Once cooled, stir in the lemon juice. Pour the mixture into an ice cream maker and churn according to the manufacturer’s instructions. Transfer the sorbet to a lidded container and freeze until firm. The result is a zesty and palate-cleansing dessert that is perfect for hot summer days.

DECADENT CHOCOLATE FUDGE SWIRL

Chocolate lovers rejoice! Indulge in the richness of a chocolate fudge swirl ice cream. For this recipe, you’ll need 2 cups of heavy cream, 1 cup of whole milk, ¾ cup of granulated sugar, ¾ cup of unsweetened cocoa powder, 4 ounces of dark chocolate (chopped), and ½ cup of fudge sauce. In a mixing bowl, whisk together the sugar and cocoa powder. In a saucepan, heat the heavy cream and milk until it begins to steam. Remove from heat and whisk in the cocoa mixture until smooth. Add the chopped chocolate and stir until melted. Let the mixture cool, then pour into an ice cream maker and churn. During the last few minutes of churning, drizzle in the fudge sauce. Transfer the ice cream to a container and freeze until set. The result is a velvety chocolate ice cream with delightful swirls of fudge.

EXOTIC MANGO COCONUT

Embrace the tropical flavors of summer with a luscious mango coconut ice cream. Gather 2 cups of ripe mango (peeled and diced), 1 cup of coconut milk, 1 cup of heavy cream, ¾ cup of granulated sugar, and a squeeze of lime juice. In a blender, puree the mango until smooth. In a mixing bowl, combine the mango puree, coconut milk, heavy cream, sugar, and lime juice. Whisk until well blended. Pour the mixture into an ice cream maker and churn until creamy and thick. Transfer the ice cream to a container and freeze until solid. With its tropical sweetness and creamy texture, this ice cream will transport you to an island paradise.

Supporting Someone Who is

Grieving

Do you remember your first experiences with witnessing grief? I find it interesting that for so many, those moments are often filled with so much anxiety and angst, they often fumble with their words or avoid the situation altogether.

I remember as a child some of my first experiences with attending a funeral for someone in the community and looking for guidance on what to say or not to say. There often is an anticipation of being in the presence of heightened emotions and feeling helpless when interacting with those grieving. Many people will develop common responses for how they think they should respond from the media, parents, or their own experiences. Unfortunately, this isn’t a topic that we openly talk about often. As a therapist and an experienced griever myself, I have a few thoughts to share on how to respond to grieving people.

ACKNOWLEDGE THEIR GRIEF

It is not uncommon for people to be afraid of mentioning someone’s recent loss or their loved one to them, because they’re afraid it will make them sad or ruin their day. As a mental health professional and a griever myself, I can assure you that mentioning their deceased loved one at that moment is not shocking news to them. Often grievers are already thinking of their loved one on some level but may be holding back from sharing for fear of the supporter’s inability to handle their grief at that moment. When you as a supporter mention their loved one or their grief, you are likely providing them relief to talk about it or helping them feel seen and heard by acknowledging what they’re going through.

CHECK YOUR URGES

It is very important that we acknowledge and accept that we cannot take away someone’s pain or grief they are experiencing. I get it - it’s uncomfortable to see someone we know experiencing raw, emotional pain. We want to say or do the one thing that will relieve them, otherwise, we are left to sit with the feeling of helplessness, which doesn’t feel great. Grief is a process we have to go through ourselves at our own pace; when someone attempts to fast-forward us through our grief it can be more harmful than helpful.

STATEMENTS TO AVOID

I will admit, years before I understood grief, I have even used a few of these statements thinking it was helpful. When we say things like,

“Well, at least we know they lived a good life,” or “At least they’re not in pain anymore,” or “They wouldn’t want you to be sad,” we’re minimizing the griever’s pain. Those statements may be true, however, it does not make the grief any easier just because we said it. Two things can be true at the same time, their loved one may have lived a good life AND they can be sad their life ended.

BE PERSONAL

It’s easy to recite the common line, “I’m sorry for your loss.” We are indeed sorry, however, this response is often so repeated that it can feel very empty to the griever. Using their loved one’s name or their role when speaking those grievances helps affirm the person’s life. For example, “I’m so sorry about Barbara” or “I’m sorry to hear your mother passed away.” There is often a fear in people who grieve that their loved one’s identity becomes erased now that they are deceased; using their name reaffirms they were an individual. It can also be helpful to share a memory of their loved one if you knew them, or how their life impacted you. This again, reaffirms their loved one mattered, and will continue to.

SIMPLY REACH OUT

Supporting someone who is grieving is an experience we all will have at some point in our lives, so learning about how to respond is important. Grief can be a lonely experience - getting past the uncomfortable feelings you might have could be impactful in someone’s life. I’d like to encourage you to simply reach out today to someone you know that has experienced a loss. It doesn’t have to be a grand gesture to let them know you’re thinking of them. Your genuine expression of care could make a big difference in their grief journey.

Therapy:

In-Person vs. Online Benefits, Considerations and Resources

Therapy plays a vital role in promoting mental health and emotional well-being. Traditionally, therapy has been conducted in person, but with the advancements in technology, online therapy has gained popularity. It’s important to explore the benefits and considerations of both in-person and online therapy. By understanding the nuances of each approach, you can make an informed decision that suits your unique needs and circumstances.

IN-PERSON THERAPY: BUILDING PERSONAL CONNECTIONS

In-person therapy has long been the standard form of therapeutic practice. Here are some key benefits associated with in-person therapy:

Personal Connection: Meeting face-to-face allows for a deeper sense of connection between the therapist and the client. Nonverbal cues, body language, and facial expressions can be observed and interpreted more accurately, fostering a stronger therapeutic bond.

Immediate Support: In-person therapy provides immediate support and human interaction. Being in the same physical space can create a sense of safety and reassurance for individuals seeking therapy.

Tangible Environment: The therapy room itself can be carefully curated to create a calm and supportive atmosphere. The physical setting may include comfortable seating, soothing décor, or other elements that contribute to the therapeutic experience.

Accessibility for Certain Populations: In-person therapy may be more accessible for individuals who have limited or no access to technology, those with certain disabilities, or those who require additional support due to their specific mental health concerns.

ONLINE THERAPY: CONVENIENCE AND FLEXIBILITY

Online therapy, also known as teletherapy or e-therapy, has emerged as a convenient alternative to in-person sessions. Here are some benefits associated with online therapy:

Accessibility and Convenience: Online therapy eliminates geographical barriers, allowing individuals to access therapy from the comfort of their own homes. This can be particularly beneficial for individuals residing in rural or remote areas, or those with mobility challenges.

Flexibility of Scheduling: Online therapy offers greater scheduling flexibility, as sessions can be conducted from any location with internet access. This flexibility is especially advantageous for individuals with busy schedules, travel commitments, or irregular work hours.

Enhanced Privacy and Reduced Stigma: Online therapy provides a layer of anonymity that some individuals find appealing. For those who may be concerned about the stigma associated with seeking therapy, online sessions offer a sense of privacy and discretion.

Access to Specialized Therapists: Online therapy broadens the pool of available therapists, enabling individuals to access specialized care that may not be locally available. This is particularly relevant for those seeking therapists with specific expertise or experience in niche areas.

88 | ForsythWoman.com

CONSIDERATIONS FOR IN-PERSON AND ONLINE THERAPY

While both in-person and online therapy have their advantages, it’s important to consider some potential drawbacks as well. Here are a few factors to keep in mind:

Technological Challenges: Online therapy relies on stable internet connections and reliable technology. Technical issues, such as connectivity problems or audio/video glitches, may disrupt the flow of therapy sessions and impact the therapeutic experience.

Nonverbal Cues: In-person therapy allows therapists to pick up on subtle nonverbal cues that may not be as evident during online sessions. Nonverbal communication can provide valuable insights into a client’s emotional state and aid in the therapeutic process.

Emotional Impact: The physical presence of a therapist in the room can provide a sense of safety and containment for some individuals, especially during moments of emotional vulnerability. Online therapy may not offer the same level of immediate support.

Therapist-Client Fit: The therapeutic relationship is crucial for successful therapy outcomes. Some individuals may find it easier to establish rapport and build trust in person, while others may feel more comfortable connecting with their therapist online.

In-person and online therapy both have unique benefits and considerations and maybe a hybrid of both could be a possible option that can be explored. The decision between the two ultimately depends on individual preferences, accessibility, and specific therapeutic needs. Whether you opt for the personal connection and immediate support of in-person therapy or the convenience and flexibility of online therapy, the most important factor is finding a qualified therapist who can provide the support and guidance you need to enhance your mental well-being.

RESOURCES

Here are a few organizations known for providing resources to help individuals find qualified therapists:

American Psychological Association (APA): The APA is the largest professional organization of psychologists in the United States. Their website offers a “Find a Psychologist” tool that allows you to search for licensed psychologists by location, specialization, and therapy type.

National Association of Social Workers (NASW): The NASW is the largest membership organization for professional social workers in the United States. Their website provides a directory to help you find licensed social workers based on your location and specific needs.

Psychology Today: Psychology Today is a popular online platform that connects individuals with mental health professionals. Their directory allows you to search for therapists based on location, specialties, and treatment approaches. Profiles typically include therapist bios, photos, and contact information.

National Board for Certified Counselors (NBCC): The NBCC is an organization that certifies counselors and offers resources for finding certified professionals. Their directory allows you to search for counselors based on location, specialties, and credentials.

Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA): SAMHSA is a branch of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services that provides resources and information on mental health and substance abuse. They have a treatment locator tool that helps individuals find certified substance abuse and mental health professionals in their area.

Association for Behavioral and Cognitive Therapies (ABCT): The ABCT is an interdisciplinary organization dedicated to the advancement of cognitive and behavioral therapies. Their website provides a “Find a Therapist” directory that allows you to search for professionals who specialize in cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) and related approaches.

It’s important to note that these organizations provide directories and resources to help you connect with therapists, but it’s still crucial to conduct your own research, read therapist profiles, and consider factors such as experience, specialization, and fit with your personal needs. Additionally, ensure that any therapist you consider is licensed or certified to ensure they meet the professional standards and legal requirements of their field.

Don’t Judge a Book by its Cover

We pass by each other, glancing up and down, taking stock of outfits, exposed skin, tattoos, hair color, and piercings. Our immediate perception and opinion of someone is formed in mere seconds, all based on how they look. We wonder about their life. What they do for work, their personality, and relationship status. We form our conclusion and that becomes our basis for any interaction or lack thereof. So many people could impact our lives, but these opinions cloud opportunities and potentially prevent relationships from forming.

Picture this: The blue tint of curls shines in the sun, the beautiful flower tattoo runs up her arm. We scoff, roll our eyes and shuffle just a little bit further over, thinking perhaps her creativity and uniqueness might just rub off on us, fearful because being a little bit different would mean being judged and exposed. She raises her arm to brush her hair out of her face, her belly showing just a bit. We shake our heads in disgust. How could she dress like that?

And her hair!

Does she even have a job?

I bet she doesn’t have a car. She probably still lives at home with her parents.

Our judgments come quick and relentless. Our conclusion of this poor woman happening seconds after seeing her. Then we hear her speak of her students, the fondness in her voice apparent. She loves her job, her true calling and passion seeping through with each word. We take another second and glance at her. Our cheeks heat as she smiles warmly at us, unaware of our thoughts. Quickly, we realize we passed judgment unfairly, all because of how she looked. Anything out of the ordinary, unique, or

different becomes an immediate thought of lack of education, poor judgment, and immaturity.

Truth is, these people are our doctors, educators, businessmen, and women. They serve our children lunches, bag our groceries, and run companies that may someday cure cancer. The fear that once existed to showcase our true personalities are slowly diminishing for some; others still hide behind lab coats and long t-shirts, fearful of what their image might portray.

It’s time that the days of judgment based on looks are forgotten. Our initial perceptions should not be clouded by what we see but by the interactions and experiences that allow individuals to show us who they are. To speak of their love of their job, to say a kind word, or conduct an act of kindness.

We will encounter rude, arrogant, and immature behavior, but at the core, these behaviors have nothing to do with image. The tattoos, piercings, or hair color did not make them this way. Perhaps their exposure to negativity did (wouldn’t that be ironic). So, to combat this vicious cycle, we must fight against our own bias and realize that we are all unique beings, opting to showcase this creativity in various forms. Some journal, others take to the kitchen and cook, while others radiate towards body art and funky hair. At the end of the day, we are all human just longing for acceptance. We need to give each other a chance because at the root of all of us is the innate desire to be kind. Unfortunately, we have been programmed to fear anything that is different. So instead of giving judging looks and moving away from the blue-haired girl, give her a smile because at the end of the day, you really don’t want to judge a book by its cover.

Conversations with Your BFF

We’ve all been through breakups, some better and more amicable than others, but they all can leave major emotional damage in their wake. There are some dos and don’ts of how best to deal with a breakup. So ‘What should I never, ever do after a breakup?’ I am so glad you asked!

BEGGING IS FOR DOGS

There’s nothing worse than begging for someone’s attention or to give you a second chance. Women, unfortunately, are the worst at doing this. We think if we were just given another go with our significant other we could make it work. I’m telling you, do not beg for a second chance. Begging makes you look weak and rather pathetic and you are better than that!

DON’T CASUALLY ASK MUTUAL FRIENDS ABOUT YOUR EX

Putting your friends in the role of reporting back to you about your ex isn’t fair to your friends and it doesn’t do you any good in moving on from the relationship. Your friends will start to dread talking to you because they know you will be pumping them for information. You should value your friends more than that because they have been by your side, so spend time with them and make sure your ex doesn’t get mentioned.

MAKE YOURSELF A PRIORITY AGAIN

As women, when we are in relationships, the significant other tends to take all our time and we focus on their good and not ours. We will sacrifice things and activities that bring us happiness to do something that makes the one we love happy. When the ex is out of the picture, if you have let yourself go, take a breath, and start to spend time with friends and doing things that you haven’t done in a while. Get to know yourself again!

PUT YOUR PHONE AWAY WHEN YOU ARE DRINKING

Drunk texting or calling is one of the worst things you can do after a breakup! As we all know, we aren’t at our best when we are ‘under the influence.’ Decisions made at low moments in our lives, fueled by alcohol, are always bad ones. Put your phone in a drawer while you are drinking.

How Should I Handle My Recent Breakup?

REVENGE IS NEVER A GOOD IDEA

If you have ever thought, ‘If I could just get back at him, I’d feel so much better!’ No matter how good that sounds, it is worse than drunk texting. Revenge always has a way of backfiring and getting you into some serious trouble and you will look pretty pathetic to not only your ex, but also those friends who have told you ‘let it go!’

DON’T TRY AND BEST FRIENDS WITH YOUR EX

I know your intentions are good and you just want to bury the hatchet, so to speak, but rushing into being friends with your ex will only set you up for some major heartbreak. Case in point… my ex and I thought we could be a sounding board for each other since we had an amicable split, but he took that a bit far. He called me to discuss

a crazy woman, his words not mine, that he was dating. Our conversations did nothing to make me feel good about myself or the fact that I was once married to a guy for many years who would tolerate a woman who was sending wedding pics from magazines with her face photoshopped onto the bride and my ex’s face as the groom. Yes, there are nuts like this out there, not just on DATELINE!!! I finally told him to stop sharing with me anything that didn’t pertain to the divorce or things we still shared.

No matter how well you and your ex handled your breakup, step away and move on! You deserve better and should start the next chapter in your life as soon as you turn the page with your ex. Period.
