MARKET WATCH // The American Rental Association (ARA) updated its forecast for the construction and industrial equipment rental industry, presenting significant changes in the economic forecast. In the previous forecast, CIE rental revenue was expected to reach $45.5 billion in 2023 and $46.7 billion in 2024. With new considerations, the CIE rental revenue is expected to total $56 billion this year and $59 billion in 2024. There are two factors underpinning these changes: ■ The first is the data on nonresidential construction spending used in the model. ■ The second is the increasing importance of “specialty rental” to overall rental revenues. Recent analysis by economists at the Federal Reserve Board has suggested that data for nonresidential construction spending produced by the U.S. Census Bureau has underestimated nonresidential construction spending by at least 20 percent since the second quarter of 2021. “The Fed economists’ analysis is both well-reasoned and analytically sound, and we believe that this new information needs to be included in our revised forecast,” said John McClelland, Ph.D., ARA vice president for government affairs and chief economist. “The second change in our forecast is the inclusion of information about specialty rentals, which has been a growing trend. NCCER COMMEMORATES THE 11TH ANNUAL CAREERS IN CONSTRUCTION MONTH

@A. Frank/peopleimages.com.stock.adobe.com

The National Center for Construction Education and Research (NCCER) recently celebrated its 11th Careers in Construction Month. Overall, the event has the goal of spreading the word about job opportunities throughout the construction industry. Led by the NCCER and Build Your Future (BYF), this monthlong campaign aims to increase public awareness of construction careers and inspire the next generation of craft professionals. NCCER and BYF reinitiated several popular CICM initiatives from previous years. There are numerous ways that construction companies and associations, secondary and postsecondary educational organizations and other groups can participate in the celebrations and spread the word about careers in construction.

ARA REVISES FORECAST FOR RENTAL AND CONSTRUCTION INDUSTRIES

S&P Global has constructed a 10-year time series of specialty rental from multiple data sources. Incorporating this new information into our model now gives specialty rentals a larger share among the variables that forecast CIE revenues.” In the United States general tool market, rental revenue growth will slow through 2023, totaling $14.9 billion this year. This is driven by weakness in residential construction markets. Growth in 2024 is predicted to slow as well, with revenue equaling $15.7 billion in 2024. https://rnt.news/jegyiv

NCCER and BYF encourage residents of each state, including students, to submit a proclamation request to officially proclaim October as Careers in Construction Month. Industry and education groups are also encouraged to take the CICM Pledge, a commitment to create meaningful connections through classroom engagements. More than 130 organizations took the pledge last year. Finally, the ninth annual I Built This! (IBT) video contest, sponsored by Dewalt and Pearson, offers construction students and trainees the chance to show off their building projects. In addition to these official initiatives, organizations and individuals can celebrate Careers in Construction Month online and in person in their own way. https://rnt.news/su5vp6

 Epiroc V Cutter Thanks to the V-shaped design of the Epiroc V Cutter that enables a cut with a flat base, no material is left untouched between the drums. Where a regular drum cutter must move side to side to create an even trench, the VC model drum cutters can reach the same result by going straight. The robust spur gears, adoptable high-torque piston motor and QuickSnap retaining system are all found in the VC series. It comes with the Pro bracket. Hatcon, a monitoring system that keeps track of operating hours, location and more, is another option. https://rnt.news/97aua6

OverWatch has been approved by all major scissor lift manufacturers, including JLG, Genie, Skyjack and Snorkel, for installation on their products and continues to be met with a positive reaction on jobsites globally. This is innovative, human-centric technology. It reduces the risk of injury by entrapment by detecting the operators’ position and movements and intervening only when their safety is compromised. The LiDAR sensor measures movement every 40 microseconds for a constant stream of accurate data and a fast response. It uses an infrared light beam. https://rnt.news/sivwxp

Laboratory against fire, electric shock and explosion. On the jobsite, Genie GS Lithium-Ion E-Drive Scissor Lifts can be fully recharged in just four hours. Because partial charges won’t damage the battery, operators can plug in the machine during breaks or over lunch to add to the battery’s capacity. E-Drive Lithium-Ion Scissor Lifts also were designed for productivity in extreme temperatures, from 120 degrees F to -20 degrees F. In cold environments, built-in heaters maintain an optimal battery temperature, even when the scissor lift is stationary. This allows the operator to work continuously, without taking breaks to warm up the battery. Because many rental companies look to give older equipment a second life on the used equipment market, Genie Lithium-Ion Powered Scissor Lifts can be retrofitted with FLA batteries when the unit reaches the end of its useful life. https://rnt.news/b75msx

COVER STORY //  Felling Trailers Drop-Deck Pan Tilt Model The Felling Trailers’ drop-deck pan tilt model has undergone design modifications to increase operator ease of use and safety. The Pan Tilt is a gravity tilt trailer, using gravity and a center pivot point for tilting the trailer bed. Felling’s Engineering team recently reviewed the Pan Tilt’s design looking for ways to improve operator ease of use along with production efficiencies. Modifications have been made to the Pan Tilt’s locking mechanism, lighting, license plate mount position and location. The tilt locking mechanism is the most notable of the modifications, improving the production process, flexibility to function with optional features and, most importantly, operator ease of use. The previous locking mechanism was a purchased part that required modification and multiple latches dependent upon a trailer build’s selected features, power up/down or a toolbox, as it was mounted on the front of the trailer. The new locking mechanism is located on the front roadside of the trailer, operating as a lever that releases a lock bar located under the front deck frame. All the components for this locking system are sourced internally, improving fit and function. https://rnt.news/atyhfv

 InTempo MX InTempo MX goes beyond just a "dot on a map." It pairs location and usage data with rental data, such as contract and jobsite information, in one easy-to-use platform. Users can pull data from any device, be it InTempo MX devices or third-party hardware. Users can identify exceptions in real time and make informed decisions in seconds; it's the easiest way to deliver true business value from a telematics program. InTempo MX delivers more actionable insights, such as which customer is currently in possession of the equipment, where on the jobsite the machine is located, when it's left its designated geofence, when the machine is coming due for preventive maintenance or routine inspections, when the machine is coming due for pickup and when the customer should be charged for extra usage. InTempo MX delivers major operational savings, not just at the rental counter, but in terms of dispatching (for faster pickups and deliveries); service (higher firsttime fix rates through remote diagnostics and fewer breakdowns due to insufficient preventive maintenance); and even customer service (by passing key telematics data directly on to the customer). BUSINESS MANAGEMENT // BY SARAH WEBB

Business, MANAGED

Rental software providers explain how using business management software can help streamline operations.

T

he rental industry no stranger to the labor shortage, it’s key that rental houses find ways to streamline their operations. That’s where business management software comes into play. Andy Clark, sales director, Americas, at Point of Rental Software; Joe Lewis, president of Fame Intel, parent company of Fame Rental; and Mary Crosslin, co-president and COO of Alert Rental; lay out how rental companies can best use business management software. Editor’s Note: Part 2 of the article (available online) covers how rental companies can gain buy-in from employees, the right time to implement a new software and more. RENTAL: WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF USING A RENTAL SOFTWARE?

Lewis: Five things happen with properly done software. The first is knowledge that enables your people to work smarter. Second is simplicity, which is lowering the barrier with an intuitive user interface experience. Third is efficiency, which influences efficiency across the entire organization and improves profitability. Fourth is policy enforcement because everybody has the rules and regulations of the company. Fifth is operational consistency; (there are) different people doing different things in different locations, but it’s making sure everybody is doing everything the same way. Clark: Very few companies today can run their business without leveraging some sort of software. We run into rental companies all the time who are using multiple applications to keep costs low such as Excel, accounting software, dispatching software, inspection software, etc. For small operations, these separate applications can handle the needs of each independent business area, but the problem lies in each application’s @ZinetroN.stock.adobe.com

BUSINESS MANAGEMENT // ability to know what’s happening in the other functional areas and how they impact each other. This can lead to broken processes, broken chains of communication, operational inefficiency, poor customer service and so on. For larger companies, not leveraging a rental management system is not an option. Crosslin: Your rental software can make you more profitable. It will accurately calculate rates and can automate shift rates and add meter surcharges. Your software can calculate weekend rates, seasonal rates or even variable rates by days of the week or for specific groups of clients. Your sales staff can produce quotes for next year with next year’s rates without them having to make manual adjustments. Rental software allows companies to reduce friction for their clients. Your clients want to self-serve, and your rental software can integrate to your website to allow them to do exactly that. They can reprint contracts, pay invoices, take equipment off-rent, get pricing and make real-time reservations. Your website is an integral part of your business, and your rental ERP can seamlessly integrate with it to make your clients’ experience easy and efficient. Rental software inherently produces and reports your KPIs and gives you oversight of your businesses’ processes, profitability and trends. It can show you when and how deeply prices are being discounted, share information between departments, provide job costing, tell you the utilization and ROI on your equipment and more. RENTAL: HOW CAN RENTAL SOFTWARE MAKE COMPANIES MORE EFFICIENT?

Clark: You can bring all of the separate business areas into the same ecosystem and streamline business processes. This has a huge impact on a rental company’s visibility into things like item availability and overbookings, reservations, delivery, maintenance, customer interactions, billing and more. For ultimate efficiency, rental companies should also leverage a platform that offers mobile capabilities and the ability to integrate the software with their website. Rental companies can decrease the workload on their employees and lower their overhead, which has a big impact on the bottom line while simultaneously improving customer satisfaction. Crosslin: Rental operations in every market and every part of the world are dealing with the same challenge: how to do more with less. We already touched on one way: allow clients to self-serve. If they can place or change orders without taking up staff ’s time or pay their invoice from their desk at 10 p.m., they are happier, and you have allowed your staff to focus on more immediate tasks. Consider the things that your staff spends the most time doing and see how rental software

can level up efficiencies: ■ Automatically email daily, weekly and monthly reports. ■ Send links, capture electronically and automatically attach information to the ticket. ■ Automate emails or texts to clients to follow up on late rentals or status updates. ■ Have telematics update meter readings to trigger preventive maintenance warnings and auto-create work orders. ■ Reduce loading errors and reruns by producing pick lists for warehouse staff. ■ Quickly update rates or schedule rate increases. ■ Improve your internal communication with popup notifications, dashboards, to-do lists, broadcast messages, etc. ■ Take inventory by utilizing a mobile device. Lewis: Every employee receiving real-time notifications is huge because life changes dramatically in rental companies with equipment coming and going and customers doing different things. The cost of education is inexpensive compared to the cost of ignorance. Often, field personnel salespeople don’t have the facts in front of them. If every employee is singing from exactly one sheet of music, the knowledge level goes up as does efficiency. Running multiple siloed systems results in that information being all over the place and makes everything far less efficient. Consolidating your tech stack into one version of the truth will improve efficiency overall. Finally, one of the most valuable commodities is data, so if you can collect all of that data without slowing down the day-to-day process, you’ll be hyperefficient. RENTAL: ARE THERE ANY CHALLENGES WITH ONBOARDING A NEW SOFTWARE?

Clark: When a business replaces their current platform, there’s always a pain during the transition. However, the longterm benefits

far outweigh the short-term pains, which is why it is so is the age of employees and their adaptability to current important to choose the right software platform the first technologies. Some people are used to pen and paper and a time, rather than opting for a cheaper solution that will clipboard. Another challenge is emotional attachment to the only serve as a Band-Aid for issues in the short term. Rental old system. You want to make sure everyone is on board. Companies should also find a software partner that offers an in-house team of experts with long-term experience in navigating the complexities of these types of implementations. Crosslin: The biggest learning curve is simply vocabulary. Most rental software does the same basic things: You just need to learn what the new software package calls it and how to do it. It’s helpful if you are prepared to explain why you have a particular business process. The biggest challenges to onboarding would be getting buy-in from key staff and underestimating the value of testing the converted data (a little extra testing upfront prevents a lot of stress during the go-live). Understand that training is not “one-size fits all.” Expect some people to want in-person training, others prefer to learn by self-paced videos and still others need to read the steps and reinforce the practice. Lewis: The No. 1 challenge is when people are missing data in current systems and try to get current data rationalized into one application. Another major factor in today’s world

COMPACTION in ACTION A look at the latest trends in compaction equipment.

Dynapac

Seismic technology automatically determines the optimal frequency of the material being compacted, resulting in fewer passes.

W

hen it comes to compaction equipment, one thing is certain: Rental companies need to be up to date on the latest technology to ensure their equipment is ready for action. What that in mind, Brandon Fredricks, product manager, Milwaukee Tool, and Eric Booth, product marketing manager, compaction, Dynapac, roll out the latest trends. ELECTRIFICATION

One significant advancement in compaction equipment is battery and motor technology, Fredricks says. “Battery technology focused on capacity, power, weight, thermal capabilities and recharge times is advancing rapidly,” Fredricks says. “These advancements are closing the gap between the power and run time of gas and corded equipment. There are many advantages, like instant power and more precise speed control.” Booth agrees.

28 OCTOBER/NOVEMBER 2023

“Alternative power is a big deal,” Booth says. “The rental market is ideal for that because of the smaller rollers.” Booth adds that emissions regulations, such as those developed by the California Air Resources Board, are a driving force behind the battery-powered trend. “In the construction industry, pretty much everything is diesel, and those traditionally have higher emissions than gasoline engines,” Booth says. “When you have an electric engine, it’s just like an electric car—it’s quieter.” Fredricks adds that frustrations and hassles with gas equipment and the need for indoor-use machines have also contributed to the uptick in electrification. “Engine issues related to gas and starting delays significantly contribute to plate compactor downtime on a jobsite,” Fredricks says. “Advancements in building construction, like tilt-up and precast construction, are driving more indoor compaction opportunities. This requires companies to install expensive ventilation systems on jobsites

CONSTRUCTION // or add expensive aftermarket emissions scrubbers. Battery-powered equipment eliminates the need for that.” Additionally, with battery technology, users no longer need to prime, choke and pull an engine, and there are no concerns about mixing fuel or inputting bad fuel. Booth acknowledges that electric machines are more expensive upfront, but rental companies can typically find incentives to bring down the price. “We’re seeing more and more incentives for companies to use alternative power. In some places, you can get a voucher system to make it cheaper to acquire the material,” Booth says. “In places that don’t have a voucher system, they get a bid incentive, where they get a 15 percent credit on their bid.” To educate customers on the

benefits of battery power, Fredricks recommends uncovering the size and scope of their jobs through questions. “While battery-powered equipment often matches the power output of gasoline-equivalent products, some companies are hesitant to make the switch,” Fredricks says. “Combining this discussion with an understanding of the run time and uptime and how many batteries are needed before the next battery is fully charged will help determine how many batteries and chargers a user needs for a large job.” Before rental houses invest in battery-powered compaction equipment, Fredricks warns that not all battery systems are created equal. “As rental yards begin adding battery-powered equipment into their fleet, it is essential to assess the battery systems they are investing

in and not just the individual pieces of equipment,” Fredricks says. “The more products a rental yard can offer on the same battery system, the more utilization and return on investment they can expect to get.” Before buying a battery-powered plate compactor, rental yards should ask themselves: ■ Are there other products on this battery system I can rent and get more utilization out of my battery and charger investments? ■ Will there be more products on this battery system in the future that will continue to help me significantly utilize my same batteries and chargers? ■ Will this battery system be supported in the future?

Another trend rental companies should keep an eye out for involves seismic technology. “Compaction is all about removing air voids out of the material, whether it be dirt, mud or asphalt,” Booth says. “When it comes to rollers, you have vibration, which consists of amplitude (how high the drum goes up and down) and frequency (how fast the drum moves). Traditionally, in soil, you set a high vibrations per minute, and you set the amplitude to low.” Seismic technology, Booth says, includes a sensor inside of the cloud that works with the natural frequency of the material that the operator is compacting. “So, if you’re compacting on dirt, there’s a different natural frequency than what it would be for stones,” Booth says. “Each substrate has its own natural frequency to it, and when you have somebody who’s rolling a large space, they keep hitting it hard until they think they’re done. With seismic technology, instead of just hitting any type of soil with the same frequency, it’s reading what the frequency is needed for that specific soil type.” In turn, seismic technology can help the operator reduce the number of passes, saving on time, money and fuel. “Long term, there’s less fuel consumption, and the machine has a lower operating cost because there’s less wear and tear on it,” Booth says.

SIMPLE ROLLERS Compaction tools that are less flashy and less expensive have gained traction in the industry as well, Booth says. “People that are coming in and renting these just want a traditional roller that’s still high quality but at a lower price point,” Booth says. For end users who are looking for something basic, Booth notes that this is just one more option that rental companies can store in their fleets.

GENERAL TOOL // Battery power allows concrete cutting equipment to be used in a variety of applications and can help simplify the rental procedure in the process.

Hilti

Manufacturers discuss the most recent trends related to concrete cutting equipment.

A

s Brian Hendrickson, trade manager for rental and retail, Hilti, reflects on recent trends in the concrete cutting equipment industry, battery technology stands out to him the most. After all, battery technology is associated with more advancements in concrete cutting than anything else, as the ability to conduct applications—which previously required gasoline-powered equipment—with batteries is “a huge change in the industry,” according to Hendrickson. Due to battery-powered concrete cutting equipment, rental store owners and end users alike have simplified the rental process overall. For instance, Hendrickson believes that battery concrete saws’ check-in/check-out processes are very straightforward. Rental store owners simply need to place a battery on each of their saws and pull the trigger. If the saw starts, it’s fully ready for the next rental, as owners don’t have to maintain any filters, spark plugs or starter ropes. “(Some) batteries also have the ability to self-diagnose, so they’re always ready for the next rental,” Hendrickson says. “End users never have to worry about the correct gas and oil

mixture or the risk of flooding.” Additionally, by using certain batteries for their concrete saws, end users won’t have to be concerned about temperature changes because they never influence the saws’ starting capabilities. Noise decreases considerably too, while harmful emissions are never released, enabling end users to utilize them in tight, enclosed spaces. FUTURE BATTERY-POWERED OFFERINGS

As a result of their various positives, Mark Michaels, senior director of product management, Husqvarna Construction North America, believes more concrete cutting equipment will be powered by batteries in the near future. In fact, due to continuous technological advancements, which are improving run times and functionalities, battery-powered products that are currently considered “niche” will become mainstream in the coming years. The primary reasons? According to Michaels, batteries can be used for a variety of applications within several different types of work environments. Not to mention, they’ll

also continue to perform if users’ jobsites encounter electrical issues, such as generators that aren’t operating properly. “Products powered by batteries will remain stable, leading to reduced maintenance costs for rental stores,” Michaels says. “And, because they are easier to start, end users will experience consistent performance.” As an example of battery-powered equipment expansions, John Allen, product manager, Stihl, stresses that the manufacturer will be releasing more battery-powered cut-off machine offerings next year. In addition, it will unveil larger units with more power, continued fuel injection technology, wheel design advancements and smart connector capabilities. “Through innovative solutions, operators can easily view transparent data about their tool’s run time, usage, maintenance schedule, last known location and more,” Allen says. “This technology makes it easier for shop owners to manage and track their tools as they are being loaned out. At the same time, we’ll continue to engineer with end users’ needs in mind, too.” Meanwhile, some manufacturers like Edco have added telematics to their equipment, according to Ed Chrisinger, Southeast regional sales manager, Edco. Consequently, rental stores can utilize GPS to track it, which is especially critical if it’s on a jobsite they need to locate prior to pick up. And, of equal importance, the saw’s telematics enable rental stores to acquire accurate operating hours of usage, thereby ensuring there aren’t any disputes about how long it was operated for. Moreover, rental stores can use telematics to create a maintenance service schedule, based on each saw’s hours of usage. As a result, the saws

Some manufacturers predict that battery-powered saws will become more mainstream and less niche in coming years.

will always be serviced on proper schedules, ensuring that major downtime and lost rental opportunities are prevented. “On each saw, the manufacturer uses QRC codes, which show end users how to correctly operate their equipment, as they can watch a training video upon scanning a QRC code on their phone,” Chrisinger explains. “The video discusses how they can operate their saw, install its diamond blade and properly cut. By acquiring step-cutting techniques, end users won’t drop their saw’s blade all the way down and cut too much too fast and can avoid equipment damage.” Aside from benefiting end users, QRC codes will help rental stores too, as they’ll receive access to part breakdowns and operation manuals concerning their particular equipment. Therefore, if a rental store’s mechanics have to order a part immediately, they can access part breakdowns by scanning the QRC code on their phone prior to finding whichever part they need and ordering it, resulting in time savings. CONTINUOUS EDUCATION

To educate customers, particularly DIY users, on the ways in which they can use their concrete cutting equipment, rental centers should consider the following two methods, according to Michaels. First, they should offer their employees continuous education on manufacturers’ products. Furthermore, questions are

essential, as rental center employees should be focused on enhancing their customers’ safety and efficiency, particularly by simplifying their equipment’s usability. To do so, they must ensure their customers will fit their preferred applications with whichever machines and diamond tools are the most appropriate—each of which can be verified through proper questioning. “Rental center employees should ask customers enough questions to determine the type of material that needs to be cut, the size of the job and the relative experience of the operator, whether they’re a DIY user or an expert,” Michaels says. Chrisinger agrees, adding that rental center employees should ask their customers the following questions: ■ How deep do you need to cut? ■ What are you cutting through? ■ What kind of power do you need for this job? ■ How long of a cut do you need to make? “By receiving answers to these questions, rental stores will provide their customers the saws and diamond blades they need for their specific jobs, leading to successful rental experiences, time after time,” Chrisinger says.

RENTAL SNAPSHOT //

DAN MORRIS

GM, Kennebec Equipment Rental, Kittery, Maine Rental: How did you get your start in the rental industry? Morris: In September 2000, I started my career in the rental industry at our Auburn branch loading/unloading, cleaning equipment, doing minor repairs, check-ins and doing a crash course in all the equipment that we have to offer. I wasn’t planning on it being a career at that point. In fall 2006, I was offered a branch manager position at our Woolwich location, and in February 2013, I was asked to be the general manager of our six locations.

Rental: Can you give us some insight on your company? Morris: Kennebec Equipment Rental was founded in 1964 by Raymond Wilson. The home office is located in Fairfield, Maine, and the three branches were subsequently opened: Bangor in 1970, Auburn in 1973 and Portland in 1977. They were strategically placed near the mills of the booming papermaking industry. At the retirement of the senior Wilson, his son, David, took over, then opened branches in Kittery in 1981 and Woolwich in 1987, which were near nuclear power plants and shipbuilding operations. Over the years, the mills are all but gone, along with the nuclear power plants, so we’ve shifted our focus toward the small and midsize contractors and the DIY crowd. We are still a family-run business, serving contractors, the industry and homeowners in Maine.

Rental: What have been some of the challenges and successes you’ve had?

bringing down the average age of our fleet and increasing our footprint online and on social media were important goals.

Morris: Some of the challenges have been the generational differences in work ethic between Baby Boomers and Gen Z. Not that one is better than the other, but simply the differences in the approach to learning, adapting to technology and embracing change, without losing the quality of service. I also struggle with holding both customers and employees accountable. Some of my successes in the industry have been in the promotions I’ve received, not by asking for them, but being recognized for the work I put in. Helping usher in some of the changes I mentioned above by adding equipment lines back into our fleet,

Rental: What's the best piece of advice you've received? Morris: It’s amazing the nuggets you pick up at industry networking events. It’s comforting to know we aren’t alone. I was told it’s OK to fire a customer. The adage of “the customer is always right” isn’t true. If they don’t care to follow policies, treat our equipment and employees with respect, then it’s fine to let them go elsewhere.

EYE ON RENTAL // BY DICK DETMER

How to PREPARE YOUR RENTAL COMPANY for 2024

T

@narawit.stock.adobe.com

he topic of preparing your business for 2024 is timely because of economic uncertainties, and the late fall and winter seasons are excellent for researching more efficient methods. I am stressing the importance of becoming more efficient with your time, energy, financial and other resources—and cutting waste. Many equipment rental business owners are working far too hard for the relatively meager amount left over after their expenses. Of course, cash flow challenges are a major concern. So, avoiding expenses is a natural reaction. It is very important to use this time to do serious, in-depth efficiency research. Even if you are currently lacking funds or other resources to put toward the implementation of many of the findings of your research, you will have found what to invest in just as soon as you are able to do so. Here are other thoughts on what can be done to prepare for a prosperous 2024: “Mine” the extraordinarily valuable information from your financials and your computer system. It can help to reduce costly purchasing and other errors, maximize return on investment, maintain proper stocking levels, increase customer satisfaction, reduce waste and more. Used properly, this information can really be a game-changer, but be sure to get proper guidance and try to not have this be a do-it-yourself exercise. Have your rental rates analyzed. It takes time to do this properly, and you will avoid the costly mistake of making an across-the-board change when the busy season kicks into high gear. Rental companies that do acrossthe-board rate changes run the risk of being too high on some items and far too low on others, so I discourage this approach. A “too high” rate can cause the frequency of rent

36 OCTOBER/NOVEMBER 2023

to drop to a level that negates the planned revenue increase from increasing the rate. A “too low” rental rate can cause a significant loss of the potential to bring in additional revenue. Explore more efficient marketing. Instead of a hitor-miss approach, dig deep into various other possibilities (including using your computer-captured data). Become even more efficient with your financial resources. What investments should be considered in 2024? What portions of your current operation could be downsized or eliminated? Are there better opportunities to use your financial, labor and other resources? Be confident that one has enough liquid assets (and borrowing capacity) to weather the challenges (and to take advantage of the investment opportunities). When conducting research, be careful not to blindly copy the strategies of other rental company owners. Get your staff more involved in the initial process of preparing for 2024. Often, after a particularly hectic season, there is a lull that can lead to boredom. Let them know that you value their input in this efficiency quest and how it helps them to experience fewer recurring hassles, etc. Research and then make the determination of which objectives and strategies you will be incorporating either now or when you can fund them. The rental companies that use their time to research and develop strategic efficiency management practices will emerge stronger and more apt to capitalize on upcoming lucrative opportunities in 2024.
