Break Down the Workforce Barriers This is part two of a blog highlighting comments made on workforce development at the 2019 AED (Associated Equipment Distributors) Summit in Orlando, FL.

Becky Schultz / bschultz@acbusinessmedia.com

AS THEY’RE PREPPING FOR future careers, construction is hardly the first industry that comes to mind among younger workers. Misconceptions about the types of jobs available, what they entail and the working environment are largely to blame.

“We’re all collectively in this industry going to need to… find the means to market to people and change the perception of what we do,” said Jason Daly, global director, marketing & support, John Deere Construction & Forestry

You’re probably not thinking about cab air quality.

You definitely should. Improving the air quality in your operator enclosures can be your route to enhanced operator health and safety, regulatory compliance and extended HVAC system life.

Company. “Finding new means of attracting these people through marketing and energies that are put in place — like through the AED Foundation — are great… and if we can do that collectively, maybe we can break down barriers that we haven’t done in the past.” Part of breaking down those barriers is reaching out to young people, and their parents, earlier than ever. “Typically, we’ve tried to reach out to tech schools and things like that, but I think today you have to go a lot younger,” said Daly. “We’ve actually reached out to kids as young as middle school to bring them into [our North Carolina] factory to show them there are paths that aren’t centered around traditional four-year colleges but still give them great opportunities.” Stephen Roy, president, sales, Region Americas, Volvo Construction Equipment, agreed, adding, “We have to start in junior high. We have to start talking to parents at that point in time — they don’t have to go to college, there are great opportunities outside of college. “Quite frankly, schools have brainwashed that everybody has to go to college. You can go out and spend $120,000 and end up in a $30,000 job,” he commented. “We have to start early, and we have to start addressing this… at a higher level, or else we’re going to continue to have a shortage.” The message is whether you make, sell or rent machines or move dirt and build structures and roads, the construction industry needs to convey early and often that it offers a different job environment than it did in the past. “The industry has a great opportunity to communicate better and change our image,” said Philip Kelliher, vice president, Americas, Distribution Services Division, Caterpillar. “When you look at it, we have some of the most advanced technology anywhere. A lot of the young people don’t realize that. I think we have a challenge to better communicate with the youth of today the opportunities in working as a technician or an engineer and in the various other elements of the business.” “It’s much more technical,” agreed Daily, “and you need a lot of different skill sets.” Advancements in technology can prove a useful tool in changing perceptions. Consider that a study commissioned by the AED Foundation reports that more than 80% of heavy equipment will be powered by electric powertrains and have systems central to autonomous operation within 10 to 15 years (www. ForConstructionPros.com/21046621). “We have an opportunity here to attract new talent on the technical side with automation and autonomy like never before,” Daly pointed out. “If we reach out and brand this industry differently… it can really revolutionize how [we attract] talent into the industry.” ET

Edge Power Cutter

Dragon Screed

Skid-steer Attachment This skid-steer attachment can be used for leveling subgrade and screeding concrete on pours from 6 to 22 ft. wide. It can be configured to work on the sides or in front of the loader, in forward or reverse. The skid steer does the dragging so concrete can be poured with lower water content. The screed drags, floats and vibrates concrete with every pass. Wireless remote control allows the operator to select from five vibration speeds. Wide floats, each with a vibrator attached, drag smoothly behind the screed bar. Hydraulic pivot allows pouring on a pitch or from an uneven surface. Quick-attach handles provide maneuverability in small spaces.

The Edge Power Cutter features Tri-Vac technology, a built-in extraction system that eliminates carbon monoxide from the exhaust and greatly mitigates silica dust levels. The technology is built into the blade guard and extracts most of the slurry that would normally escape from the blade guard while cutting. Exhaust fumes are funneled down the waste tube and cooled with airflow and water. The lightweight saw is suitable for general-purpose concrete cutting, is quick and easy to set up and is suitable for 15-in. blades with a 6-in. cutting depth. Saw and blade guard move independently, allowing the blade guard to sit flush to the cutting surface for more of each cut.

dvanced electronic technologies continue to simplify wheel loader operation, resulting in increased productivity for both experienced and novice operators. Electrohydraulic (EH) controls have gained popularity in the mid-size wheel loader market and bring many benefits including return-to-dig, soft stops at the end of the hydraulic cylinder stroke and customizable hydraulic response settings.

12 EQU IPM ENT T OD AY | May 2019 ET0519_12-17_WheelLoaders_CB.indd 12

“Electro-servo hydraulic controls enable the return-to-dig feature and end-stroke dampening,” says Eric Yeomans, product manager, wheel loaders, Volvo Construction Equipment. “This allows the operator to set detent functions, as well as bucket and boom positions from inside the cab with switches found on the right-side A-pillar. EH controls also provide the ability to adjust the lever response control. There are three settings available

(active, normal and soft), so an operator can adapt the control behavior to his or her liking.” In addition, EH controls on Volvo wheel loaders enable a standard bucket positioner system, which allows operators to easily adjust the tilt angle to a predefined position. “The system levels the bucket into digging position from both the dump and carry positions,” Yeomans explains.

The EH controls also make it possible to cushion the end of the hydraulic cylinder stroke. “Novice and experienced operators appreciate Hyundai’s Soft End Stop feature,” says Chad Parker, senior product specialist/sales trainer, Hyundai Construction Equipment Americas. “This important feature reduces the hydraulic speed of the cylinder as it reaches the end of its stroke. It lessens the shock load of the

WHEEL LOADERS

Desmarais Construction uses Hyundai HL900 Series wheel loaders for snow removal. Owner Stephen Desmarais has seen so many improvements in the successive generations of wheel loaders that he says they are now as intuitively easy to operate as driving a pickup truck. Photo Credit: Hyundai stroke, which improves material retention, while increasing operator comfort and productivity. Another feature of the Hyundai HL900 Series that is made possible with EH controls is Fine Modulation Mode. “It allows hydraulic power to remain constant while digging, but reduces hydraulic flow to give the operator more accurate control,” says Parker. “This feature puts novice operators on a more equal footing with experienced operators in achieving precision digging. A Boom/Bucket

Detent feature helps reposition the boom and bucket for easier return-to-dig bucket positioning when returning to reload the bucket.”

HYDRAULICS EVOLUTION SIMPLIFIES OPERATION Desmarais Construction, Milford, NH, uses the HL900 Series wheel loaders for snow removal. “In the 40 years I have been in business, it’s been absolutely amazing to see the evolution of wheel loaders and excavators,” says Stephen Desmarais, owner. “We were among the first around here to use wheel loaders for snowplowing. I’ve seen so many improvements in the successive generations... “With the current Hyundai HL900 series wheel loaders — including our newest machine, an HL955TM tool-master model — plowing is as comfortable and intuitively easy as driving a pickup truck,” he says. “It’s just bigger.” For its mid-size L-Series wheel loaders, John Deere updated the pilot hydraulic controls to EH controls. “The main reason that we did this is an extraordinarily high number of utility-size customers are using the machines with multiple attachments,” says Chris Cline, marketing manager, John Deere Construction and Forestry.

“The ability to go between them quickly is important.” EH controls make a number of exclusive features possible. “One is the ability to change the attachment settings. As you change a flow setting for your specific attachment, you are able to save that setting so the next time you use that attachment you don’t have to reset it.” Two multi-function programmable buttons on the mid-size L-Series wheel loaders allow several functions, including the bucket vibrate feature, to be programmed. These programmable buttons allow the operator to assign one of 10 functions to each button that best meets the needs of the operator. Functions include bucket vibrate, diff lock, the horn, the kickdown button, etc. EH controls on the L Series also allow kickouts to be easily set from the monitor with the push of a button in the cab. Another big improvement is the auxiliary hydraulic rollers integrated into the joystick. This enables the operator to operate up to six functions with the single-lever joystick without having to install additional levers or remove his/her hand from the single lever. In addition, you can now set continuous flow for each of the auxiliary functions without having to hold a lever or button, and the return-to-dig feature is now functional from both the dump and curled positions. You also have the ability to save two different settings for different attachments, if desired.

Komatsu wheel loaders help novice operators be more productive with standard features such as upper/lower boom kickouts and in-cab adjustable bucket positioner, which help minimize operator effort as well as improve cycle times for repeat operations. www.ForConstructionPros.com

AUTOMATED FEATURES MAKE OPERATORS MORE PRODUCTIVE “Deere added a lot of nice features, like the rear view camera,” says Brad Baker, Monocacy Custom Services, Dickerson, MD. He also praises the savable settings. “I can get in this machine after another operator has been in it and push one button and everything is set the way that I like it. The settings are even specific to different attachments. So not only can I switch attachments very quickly, I hit a button and change the hydraulic settings and I am off to work immediately.”

These programmable buttons allow the operator to assign one of 10 functions to each button that best meets the needs of the operator. Functions include bucket vibrate, diff lock, the horn, the kickdown button and more.

I CAN GET IN THIS MACHINE AFTER ANOTHER OPERATOR HAS BEEN IN IT AND PUSH ONE BUTTON AND EVERYTHING IS SET THE WAY THAT I LIKE IT. — Brad Baker, Monocacy Custom Services John Deere also added a bucket vibrate feature that allows the operator to carefully meter dry materials. “You can hit bucket vibrate and it will basically cascade material off the edge of the bucket like a little waterfall,” says Cline. “The operator doesn’t have to sit there and jiggle the handle to try to get the material to come out. When you get the exact amount of material, you just let go of the button and it will turn off.” Automating functions increases the efficiency of any operator. “Komatsu mid-size wheel loaders help novice operators be more productive with standard features such as upper/lower boom kickouts and in-cab adjustable bucket positioner, which

PAYLOAD MANAGEMENT SYSTEMS YIELD RESULTS Many manufacturers are integrating payload information systems to keep operators better informed. “Volvo’s latest update to our Load Assist solution gives operators real-time information on bucket payload, helping them improve their accuracy and productivity by achieving the perfect payload every time,” says Eric Yeomans, Volvo Construction Equipment. “Load Assist is beneficial for operators of all levels of experience, but for newcomers it can be particularly valuable in helping them boost their productivity and The Load Assist solution accuracy,” he states. “Load Assist gives operators real-time information on can be beneficial to operators every bucket’s load within +/- 1% accuracy, with information displayed on of all skill levels by giving our 10-in. touchscreen Volvo Co-Pilot display.” them real-time information on “We have worked hard to integrate payload scales on our equipment,” every bucket’s load, with the notes Jason Hagedorn, Caterpillar. “It is imperative for customers to maxiinformation displayed on a 10-in. mize payload from a revenue perspective, yet ensure trucks are not overloaded, which has many safety implications if the trucks were to leave the touchscreen Volvo Co-Pilot display. yard in this condition. “The Caterpillar Production Measurement (CPM) payload scale is deeply integrated into machine systems from a linkage position, hydraulic pressure and temperature compensation perspective,” he continues, “which enables industry leading accuracy, while saving valuable time, fuel and cylinder wear due to low lift weight and dynamic tip-off capabilities. Additionally, this builds operator confidence on what he is actually moving with the machine.”

help minimize operator effort as well as improve cycle times for repeat operations,” says Adam Braun, product marketing manager, Komatsu America Corp. “Additionally, our Advanced Joystick Steering System (AJSS) offers novice operators more precise steering at higher speeds.” He adds, “Operators of all experience levels can benefit from our semi auto dig and our new automatic digging feature. By monitoring work equipment pressures, Komatsu wheel loaders initiate digging motions at the optimum time, reducing operator fatigue with 20% to 30% less effort in V-cycle loading. Transmission kickdown is integrated into the automatic digging system, eliminating the need for the operator to manually engage the transmission kickdown button.” Komatsu wheel loaders with optional third spool hydraulics can be combined with optional Multi-function Mono-lever controls. “With this system, the controls of the attachments are in one hand of the operator,” says Braun. “This keeps the controls simple, and the operator won’t have to search for controls in multiple areas.” Caterpillar uses a load-sensing hydraulic system that only

14 EQU IPM ENT T ODAY | May 2019 ET0519_12-17_WheelLoaders_CB.indd 14

pumps as much fluid as needed to meet demands. “What sets Caterpillar’s hydraulic system apart from many others is the unique capability to lift through the pile during the dig, while also allowing operators to utilize the lift and tilt functions simultaneously for an unimpeded dig motion and the quickest cycle times in the industry,” says Jason Hagedorn, product application specialist for medium wheel loaders, North America. “By providing the operator with responses when he needs it, this system integration results in higher production/revenue

potential and lower fuel consumption to control operating costs.” For Caterpillar mid-size wheel loaders, machine integration has improved system efficiency. “For enhanced efficiency and jobsite safety, Caterpillar offers many standard and optional features that are deeply integrated into the machine systems but remain easy and intuitive for jobsites/operators to use, which all translates into enhanced production,” says Scott Schmidtgall, product application specialist for medium wheel loaders, North America. Take the standard Eco mode, which is intelligent and maintains full first gear rimpull and torque to load the bucket quickly. “It simply clips out maximum acceleration in travel gears to save fuel.” Another standard offering is a variable ground speed limiter, which is enabled through the service passcode. “It can be used to limit max propulsion speeds from a safety perspective,” says Schmidtgall. “Once the forward and reverse max speeds are independently set through the touchscreen display,

the system functions intelligently by utilizing all gears to minimize fuel consumption and noise level and simply clips out engine power to maintain the maximum speed setting. The system is also ergonomic for operators as the throttle pedal can be pressed normally without a mechanical spring detent, which can be tiresome for operators over a period of time since machines need to utilize higher engine rpms for filling the bucket and during ramp climbing.” Caterpillar’s integrated object detection system is a speed sensitive radar-based system that visually and audibly alerts operators in the cab. “As the system is speed sensitive, false alarms are reduced, which minimizes operator complacency, therefore enhancing jobsite safety,” says Hagedorn.

TECHNOLOGY IMPROVES SAFETY A safe machine and operator are essential to maintaining high productivity. “As evidence of that, Hyundai recently introduced a wheel loader version of our exclusive AAVM (AllAround View Monitoring) system,” says Parker. “It’s available as optional equipment on all HL900 Series wheel loaders. AAVM provides a 360˚ virtual operating view of the jobsite.” The system uses four cameras, including one each mounted

on the left- and right-side mirrors, one on the front of the cab, and the standard backup camera mounted to the rear hood. The AAVM system includes the IMOD (Intelligent Moving Object Detection) system that senses and warns the operator with on-screen flashing arrows and an alarm when objects come within either of two selectable ranges (6.5 ft. or 22.9 ft.) of the wheel loader. “The AAVM system uses Hyundai’s proprietary imaging software to display 3D and 2D views of the operator’s working environment, including a unique bird’s-eye view,” notes Parker. “Two features of mid-size loaders that are most useful in making a novice operator more productive are a multi-function display panel and rear view cameras,” says Aaron Kleingartner, Doosan Infracore North America. “The wheel loader’s display panel provides operators with critical machine information such as speed, engine rpm, transmission gear, machine warning, coolant temperature and transmission oil temperature. It also provides the wheel loader’s fuel usage with gauges that display both levels and consumption.”

The control placement needs to be optimized to minimize operator movement and fatigue. This includes control switches for lights, wipers and ride control.

“In the last couple of years, Doosan has done a lot in regards to the accommodations for the operator,” says Wade Beck, equipment manager, Rasmussen Group. The Des Moines, IA-based company represents 10 multi-faceted design-build heavy construction companies that specialize in bridge construction, marine contracts, concrete and asphalt supply, paving, heavy hauling, dump trucks, crane operations and fabrication. “[The wheel loaders] offer really good visibility out the front of the machine.” Windows have been extended in the sides of the machine, as well, for even better visibility. The rear view camera has become an important visibility aide. “The operators along with myself really like the rear view camera because the hood heights on the back of the tractors have changed going with Tier 4 Final,” says Beck. “In some cases, the hood height has changed anywhere from 6 to 9 in., so you lose some of that rear visibility out the back of the cab. The rear view camera really assists with that. Some of our locations — with truck traffic, piles and just physical size — it sometimes gets kind of demanding in regards to the footprint the machine [has to work within for] backing up and moving around.

“In the heat of the battle, operators are going as hard as they can to keep the bins full and keep their material pushed up to keep the flow of incoming trucks moving,” he points out. “It is good to have that rear view camera where they are not having to turn around. It also reduces fatigue and strain on the operator.”

OPERATOR-FOCUSED CONTROLS MINIMIZE FATIGUE When evaluating machines, one of the things Beck looks at is whether the operator is always facing forward. The control placement also needs to be optimized to minimize operator movement and fatigue. This includes control switches for lights, wipers and ride control. “Doosan does a really good job of having everything basically facing forward for the operators,” he notes. “They are not having to look off to the sides. They are not having to look up into the corners of the cab.” “Mid-size Doosan wheel loaders offer several features to help boost operator productivity,” says Kleingartner. “An example is an easy-to-use

forward-neutral-reverse (FNR) joystick control/gear selector for greater operator comfort. The FNR functionality on the joystick is more intuitive, allowing operators to easily switch between forward, neutral and reverse without removing their hand from the controls, simply by pressing the joystick buttons.” Control configurations are important for productivity. “In the 3 1/2- to 5-yd. machine I typically, whenever possible, try to use a wobble stick,” says Beck. “Some machines, the option is not there so it would be a twostick operation. “The younger guys like to use the automated buttons on the joysticks,” he continues. “I am kind of an old-school guy where I am still using the forward and reverse on the side of the steering column. A lot of these guys like the forward and reverse buttons and the automatic return-to-dig or dump features. The younger generation seems to favor some of the automation that the loaders now come with. But it is still nice to be able to run them traditionally, and we still have some of those types of operators, as well.” Control screens have also become more sophisticated. “A lot of the manufacturers have done a good job in regards to the LCD screens and LED lights,” says Beck. “The creature comforts in the cab have come a long way.” ET

WHEN COMPACT EQUIPMENT

UPGRADES

MAKE A DIFFERENCE Take time to determine which add-ons can deliver maximum ROI for skid steers and compact track loaders.

W

hen skid steers and compact track loaders were first introduced, their muscle and maneuverability found a niche pushing and lifting dirt and other material in more confined areas. Since then, a myriad of attachments has turned them into multipurpose tools that can drill post holes, dig like a backhoe, blow snow, sweep and work as a trencher to name but a few applications. As it is with any piece of equipment, buyers and operators want to get the most ROI from their purchase. When matched to the application, upgrades can bolster a machine’s versatility and performance. The key word, of course, is “matched.” When not properly matched to a task, upgrades can become an unnecessary expenditure. Application, however, is not the sole determining factor for purchasing upgrades, notes Aaron Haynes, global product manager, skid and track loaders, Manitou Group. “Operators may choose a type of control based on what is most familiar to them or how it feels, such as Gehl pilot controls that give the operator one-to-one proportional control over the drive

22  EQU IPM ENT T OD AY | May 2019 ET0519_22-25_CompactEquip_CB.indd 22

Two-speed pays for itself when moving over longer distances.

system and enhance machine responsiveness. “Much also will depend upon who the owner of the equipment is. Owner/operators will likely keep equipment that requires a large financial investment for a longer period. That, combined with high utilization, can drive an owner/operator to choose more customization and upgrades so they are more comfortable,” he explains. “Conversely, a rental company that has customers utilizing the equipment for much shorter periods may determine that certain upgrades are simply nice-to-haves. Additionally, rental companies are aware of which options will drive healthier rental rates and that will factor into the decision, as well.” The regions in which machines are operated will also influence their configurations. “Operating equipment in Arizona will have much different requirements than Maine, simply due to the weather,” says Haynes.

Wacker Neuson. “Besides the obvious benefit of operator comfort year-round in various temperatures, a cab provides protection when operating in dusty environments and reduces the noise an operator is exposed to.” An air suspension heated seat, low-effort joystick controls, rear view camera and radio are other optional features designed to provide a better operating experience. “If operators are comfortable, they are likely to be more productive and accurate in their work,” Ryan comments. “Aside from the HVAC cabin, most optional equipment would be less than 5% of the total cost of the machine and therefore may be a justifiable expense.”

HAVING A COMFORTABLE WORKING ENVIRONMENT IS SOMETHING ALL OPERATORS CAN APPRECIATE.

COMFORT IS KING Of course, having a comfortable working environment is something all operators can appreciate. “Probably the most common upgrade to a basic machine is an enclosed cab with heat and air conditioning,” says Nathan Ryan, product manager, skid steer and compact track loaders,

PERFORMANCE OPTIONS High-flow hydraulics have become a popular performance upgrade. “Choosing high flow expands attachment options to include more demanding attachments and provides a great return on investment,” says Buck Storlie, ASV product line manager. “However, if your tool kit doesn’t include high-flow compatible attachments, this option is money wasted.” Lee Padgett, Takeuchi-US product manager, agrees, adding, “Buyers have to consider how many opportunities they would have to use high-flow attachments such as a forestry or mulching head, cold planer, milling machine or snowblower to upgrade, or if it would

make more sense just to rent a high-flow machine for those few applications.” Make sure to do your homework prior to upgrading to high-flow, he emphasizes. “All Takeuchi compact track loaders come equipped with a standard-flow auxiliary circuit that will operate most standard-flow attachments, so this may be the smarter choice if the additional flow is not required,” he states. “Two models, the TL12R2 (radial configuration) and the TL12V2 (vertical configuration), provide up to 40 gpm of flow and can be used with many different hydraulic attachments right from the factory with very little to add.” Another beneficial performance option is self-leveling. It can be especially valuable for loading and pallet carrying applications. “As the load is raised, it will keep the bucket or forks at the same plane at which the operator started. By taking some of the thought process out of the lifting, the feature can reduce spillage and operator fatigue,” says Storlie. Yet, such a feature is not always needed. “If operators feel comfortable operating equipment without this option, it can be an unnecessary cost.” Two-speed travel can be worthwhile for moving longer distances as it can cut travel times in half. “However, it is not typically used in tight spaces or while needing maximum pushing power,” says Storlie. “Joystick controls make operation easier for almost every application,” he continues. “The ease of use leads to less fatigue and more time in the seat, resulting in a more productive operator. The controls are also faster and easier to learn for the novice operator. Actual cost can

Adding high-flow can expand attachment options and grow service offerings.

vary and some OEMs, including ASV, offer this as a standard feature. Those that don’t charge an average of $800 for the upgrade.”

COMFORT AND PERFORMANCE COMBINED Some available features combine both comfort and performance enhancements. “A rear view camera to improve safety, along with highwear and high-traction tires for various jobsite conditions, are very pragmatic options,” says Haynes. “Others arguably combine comfort and performance. For example, Gehl’s hydraulic Power-A-Tach all-weather system allows users to quickly install and remove attachments. Leaving a seat to only connect auxiliary hydraulics is certainly a convenience, but it also saves time and increases productivity.” “If your work includes carrying loads of material over rough terrain, undercarriage suspension may be the biggest of all upgrades, both in terms of operator comfort and overall productivity,” Storlie states. “Some manufacturers, like ASV, offer the feature standard. This makes the actual cost difficult to pin down, but its ROI is felt early. Suspending the undercarriage reduces the impact both to the operator and the machine from the terrain below. This allows operators to travel faster without losing material, saving both time and fuel by reducing the number of trips.” Undercarriage suspension reduces machine stress, as well, which means longer component life and lower long-term maintenance costs. “A comfortable operator is also one who stays in the machine, with

24  EQU IPM ENT T OD AY | May 2019 ET0519_22-25_CompactEquip_CB.indd 24

your company, works faster and is more productive every day,” Storlie adds. “The option pays for itself in nearly every application.” By combining suspended wheels with a fully suspended undercarriage, a dual-level undercarriage suspension is a step up from regular suspension. “The feature allows the track to flex over smaller objects, further enhancing ride quality and improving traction,” says Storlie.

JUSTIFYING THE COST Calculating ROI is straightforward for some optional features, less so for others, says Ryan. “With two-speed, for example, one can calculate some incremental work factors and see how that would impact productivity. Other optional features might not show big ROI, but may mitigate risk to people and property. A rear view camera system, for instance, can help avoid costly damage to the machine and surrounding structures,” he indicates. “Some optional

features broaden the applications for which the machine is suited. High-flow, for example, could grow a contractor’s business by adding cold planing to a service offering.” Equip machines to match all the applications for which you intend to use it, but avoid overloading it, Ryan cautions. He notes that Wacker Neuson and a few other OEMs offer field-installed versions of most available options for two important reasons: 1. Contractors can change their minds and add options after the point of purchase. 2. When they’re ready to sell the machine to a secondary market, options required by those buyers can be added, increasing resale value. “Understand what options are out there,” says Storlie. “Some manufacturers offer standard features that others either have as an additional option, or maybe don’t offer at all. If these features are included standard, they may deliver a better ROI in less time.” “Utilization is an important variable, as well,” says Haynes.

“Certain upgrades, especially comfort upgrades, may not make sense when an owner requires the equipment to successfully run his or her business but uses it on an infrequent basis. For example, contractors operating in a hot climate with high utilization may require air conditioning because of extended exposure to the elements, but they may not require air conditioning in the same environment with low utilization. The scenarios are plentiful, but overall, matching application and environment with the expected utilization will ensure a higher return on investment.” When do upgrades make a difference? Certainly, one answer is when they deliver a healthy ROI, but it’s not the only answer since ROI can be elusive. Utilization, operator comfort, a machine’s resale value, convenience, safety concerns and expanding your service offerings are among things to consider when making a choice between purchasing a base model, adding on factory upgrades or deciding later to install field options. START WITH THE RIGHT MACHINE Before considering available options, make sure the machine itself is matched to the application. “If contractors are looking at a 3,500-lb. rated operating capacity (ROC) machine but opt to buy a 3,100-lb. ROC machine instead and add counterweights, they may be disappointed with the traction and power of the smaller machine,” says Nathan Ryan, Wacker Neuson. “Contractors should size the machine they need and then customize it with the options they deem necessary.” “Making sure you have the right machine for the application is very important,” Lee Padgett, Takeuchi-US, agrees. “If the machine is used primarily in digging and grading applications, a radial lift design may be the right machine. If it will be used mostly for load and carry applications, maybe its vertical lift counterpart is the right choice.” Vertical Lift Loaders Reach New Level of Versatility www.ForConstructionPros.com/21041337 Should You Buy a Skid-steer Loader or a Compact Track Loader? www.ForConstructionPros.com/12263102

Mechanics Trucks Get

Innovative materials, advanced crane controls and telematics technology provide unique solutions to make your technicians more productive.

Lighter, Smarter, Safer T

his year, we witnessed several innovations in the mechanics truck market that could have a big impact on how you spec trucks. Weight remains a critical concern as every pound saved on the actual truck spec translates into another pound of available payload. “Weight reduction allows operators to carry more tools and/or reduce the wear on truck components such as brakes. It also limits the chance of getting overweight tickets,” says Tim Davison, senior product manager, Stellar Industries. Manufacturers are trying to reduce weight through advanced designs. “We have taken to engineering our cranes with weight savings in mind by using multiple steel thicknesses, removing components from the housing and utilizing new designs for smaller, lightweight components,” says Ian Lahmer, marketing director, Venco Venturo Industries. Service Trucks International reduced body weight by using nontraditional materials and enhanced finite element analysis (FEA) of structures to determine where increased strength is or is not needed. “Careful consideration of all of the added systems to a service body, and being able to

accurately calculate tare and operating weights while quoting to the customer, are very important in building a package that meets payload expectations,” says Walt VanLaren, president, Service Trucks International. There are many ways to design weight savings into mechanics trucks. “Because Auto Crane started with the crane design first, we developed the Titan body to the crane, allowing significant weight savings [over] other manufacturers who added steel to a service body to make it work for a crane,” says Aaron Rayner, marketing management, Ramsey Industries. “This keeps the Titan bodies and outriggers competitive on overall weight, even when compared to aluminum bodies.” Over the last several years, there has been increased use of lightweight materials, particularly

Stellar Industries recently introduced an aluminum telescopic service crane, the EC3200 Aluminum. Weighing just 500 lbs., it allows fleet operators to reduce the weight of their trucks, giving them the potential to carry more payload, or even downsize their truck chassis.

aluminum, for components such as doors, compartment drawers and, in certain cases, the bodies themselves. This year, Stellar Industries introduced an aluminum telescopic service crane, the EC3200 Aluminum. “Weight reduction is the biggest advantage to this crane,” says Davison. “We have reduced the weight of our crane by over 30% by utilizing extruded aluminum booms. Weighing just 500 lbs., the EC3200 Aluminum is nearly 200 lbs. lighter than our nearest competitor. This allows fleet operators to reduce the weight of their trucks, giving them the potential to carry more payload, or even downsize their truck chassis.” The aluminum crane meets the same criteria as its steel counterpart. “Because we have to meet ANSI B30.5 design criteria whether the booms are steel or aluminum, the EC3200 Aluminum matches the performance of the standard EC3200 made with steel booms,” says Davison. “As for long-term durability, we went the extra step of

Because Auto Crane started with the crane design first, it developed the service body to the crane, allowing significant weight savings vs. manufacturers that add steel to a body to make it work for the crane. anodizing our aluminum booms to improve wear resistance. This surface, under our testing, actually performed as good or better than steel booms.” The introduction of the aluminum crane model builds upon Stellar’s experience in manufacturing aluminum truck bodies. The company has 25 years’ experience with aluminum tire service bodies, and rolled out the TMAX Aluminum Series of mechanics truck bodies in 2017. “Stellar is the first mainstream North American crane body manufacturer to develop an aluminum mechanics body,” Davison states. “We still maintain a steel subframe and crane supports. However, we created aluminum sidepacks to cut weight and drastically reduce corrosion. The key to our design has been to use steel where we

need the structural advantage, but aluminum where it performs well.” Weight savings are substantial. “We save customers anywhere from 800 to 1,400 lbs. of weight depending upon the body size,” says Davison.

LIGHT UP THE NIGHT LED lighting technology is making it possible to efficiently and reliably light up critical areas on the service truck. Since much of a technician’s work tends to take place after the sun sets, lighting up the work area and lighting up tool drawers increases safety and efficiency during evening and early morning repairs. “LED lighting advances have happened at a very rapid rate, making the ability to offer staggering amounts of lumens with minimal current draw very easy compared to not many years ago,” VanLaren points out. “In addition to body lights, Tiger cranes can be equipped with a LED boom tip light, which automatically centers a field of light over the load.” LED lights are rapidly gaining acceptance. “With the everexpanding development of the less expensive, low power usage LED lighting technologies, there are numerous type lights and lighting systems — such as bar lights, magnetic portable lights and crane boom tip work lights — that are available from several manufacturers,” says Lahmer. A truck’s compartment lights often don’t provide adequate light into drawers when opened. To address this issue, American Eagle introduced the American Eagle Drawer LightBar, which adapts to current and future drawer systems. The loose parts kit consists of the Drawer LightBar, loose wire end for connecting to the truck, an LED light strip and simple assembly instructions.

TELEMATICS PERMIT PRODUCTIVITY AND PROACTIVE MAINTENANCE Connected technologies are now migrating to the mechanics truck market. “One of the main advancements includes the incorporation of CANbased electrical systems into service bodies for enhanced control functions and logic for onboard equipment and telemetry systems,” says VanLaren. Auto Crane is introducing telematics on its NexStar crane management system. It will help maximize productivity; provide proactive maintenance on cranes and accessories; track power units and compressors; monitor equipment to help increase the focus on safety; see the equipment status in real-time; and view historical data to help fleet managers optimize their equipment on future builds. “NexStar Connect allows fleet managers to see if the crane is being used safely and how it is utilized,” says Rayner. “This allows the fleet manager to verify the crane is the right size for the type of jobs the service tech is performing.” Information feeds seamlessly into third-party telematics modules that are already integrated into mechanics trucks. These include systems from Ford Telematics (Telogis-Verizon), VisionLink (CaterpillarTrimble), Fleetmatics, Geotab, FleetBoard and AirIQ. The information enables you to: ˜˜ Track crane utilization • Maximum and average capacity • Number of overloads • Time of use • Outrigger deployment ˜˜ Monitor truck/equipment • Track maintenance • High idle hours • Air compressor hours ˜˜ Monitor auxiliary power units • Real-time status • Troubleshooting assistance

The Venturo ET12KX-P electric-hydraulic service crane can be installed on trucks with a minimum 8,800-lb. GVWR. It features a 12,000-ft.-lb. rating and a 3,500-lb. maximum capacity.

CRANE TECHNOLOGY EVOLVES Electric crane technology has carved out a niche in the mechanics truck market. Take Venco Venturo Industries, which has introduced a new variation of its ET12KX-P — a 3,500-lb. electric-hydraulic service crane with a fully powered boom extension up to 16 ft. “The winch is operated by an electric power unit mounted to the service crane, but also includes hydraulic-powered boom elevation, boom extension and crane rotation,” says Lahmer. Hydraulic functions are driven by a self-enclosed hydraulic pump system. “This allows the crane to be installed and hooked directly to the battery as opposed to purchasing a separate PTO to run all the hydraulics of a full hydraulic crane.” Electric-hydraulic service cranes do not need installed hydraulic lines driven by a PTO, thereby making these cranes an easier, less time-consuming install. The Venturo ET12KX-P features proportional controls, which give the operator precise load control functions including rotation, elevation and extension. “Many smaller electric cranes do not include full power boom extension and/or proportional

Larger loads and constant duty cycles are still better served by fully hydraulic proportional cranes. “Electric-hydraulic cranes have electric winches and are considered to be ‘occasional duty use cranes’,” Lahmer comments. “While electric winch run times vary by model, they typically fall in Crane control technology the two to five minin the service truck industry utes of constant, not is playing a substantially more letting off the power important role in new product switch run time. (PLC) systems. These Europeanstyle control systems give the user greater control and safety features by using multiple sensors and user feedback functions with proprietary logic programming. “Starting this year, Venturo will now offer the Venturo Logic Control (VLC) crane control system on its hydraulic crane line,” says Lahmer. “This control system gives all hydraulic cranes a standard proportional control with wireless remote, which gives real-time data of lifting loads,

angles, pressure settings and vehicle grade alignment data. This technology gives operators full controls that are beneficial in both safety and efficiency.” Features of the VLC system include vehicle stability/grade indications, overload protection, wireless or CAN communication and multiple alerts and displays utilizing lights, controller vibrations and screen text. Multiple safety and capacity alerts warn operators of a malfunction or overload. The VLC system features four types of alerts: LCD display screen text Transmitter handle vibrations Green/yellow/red alert light located on the underside of the boom Corresponding lights on the wireless receiver Stellar Industries touts the benefits of its advanced crane controls. “Control systems for cranes have improved to give more precise crane movement, as well as provide feedback to the operator on crane performance and lift data,” Davison points out. “The Stellar CDTplus system gives operators real-time, visual and haptic feedback such as the exact weight they have on their boom, how far they can move the load and how close they are to an overload situation.” Control is the name of the game with service truck cranes. “Auto Crane was first to introduce the open-center hydraulic control system to the service crane market,” Rayner states. “NexStar allows independent speed control simultaneously on all functions, allowing load maneuvers in tight spots where a simple lift is not possible.” The crane control technology is simplifying precise lifts. “Tiger Cranes uses a proprietary control logic, Auto II Speed, on its hydraulic cranes that automatically reduces the maximum operating speed once a load is sensed,” says VanLaren. “The full resolution of the control is retained in this reduced speed setting, giving the operator a higher range of fine motor control to be able to safely place the load. Load percentage indication on the remote control gives the operator instantaneous feedback on how close they are to the max load they can lift for a given operating position.” ET

Truck Reman Delivers Like-New Quality at Value Price Fleet truck managers turn to remanufacturing as a solution to extend vehicle life and avoid the high retail price of replacement.

F

or Gerry Boren, the equation was pretty simple. The city government manager in Diboll, TX, had a request for a new truck to replace the water department’s well-worn Ford F-350. That would cost at least $65,000 with the same type of specialty service bed included. Boren had heard about truck remanufacturing at a Texas municipalities conference. He thought it would be a good solution for his dilemma. The more than $30,000 he would save with a reman truck made a compelling case. Boren became convinced of the wisdom of remanufacturing after sending the city’s sun-beaten red F-350 pickup to Vehicle Reman LLC of Tyler, TX. Vehicle Reman remanufactured the truck using a comprehensive 10-step process at its 60,000-sq.ft. facility. The price tag for the F-350 delivered back to the city was just shy of $34,000. The $31,000 Boren saved was used to boost pay for city workers. It was a double win. “When we went with the remanufacturing, the truck went

It got back a like-new vehicle and saved an estimated $31,000 vs. purchasing new. up to Tyler, came back ready to use and all we had to do was put a decal on it,” Boren says. Bob Browning agrees with that approach. His company, Compressors Unlimited International LLC, puts lots of strain on its Ford F-350 pickup, which is equipped with a hoist for loading and unloading heavy air conditioning compressors. The truck had 216,000 miles on it and might otherwise have gone to scrap. But since his company remanufactures

compressors, Browning thought to look into remanufacturing the dark green 2000 Ford. The like-new truck he got back cost $24,000 — about half that of a similarly equipped new F-350. “I tell people all the time about vehicle reman,” Browning says. “We’re dealing with medium- to small-size contractors a lot. These guys can’t afford to buy a new service vehicle every three or four years. I tell them to seriously look at remanufacturing.”

NOT ONLY WOULD I RECOMMEND IT, I’M GOING TO DO IT AGAIN”

ET0519_36-39_JobsiteSolutionsReman_CB.indd 36

A growing number of fleet vehicle owners are discovering remanufacturing as an affordable option at a time when recordhigh prices and heavy demand have put new trucks out of reach for many businesses. Under the reman approach, trucks and other vehicles are disassembled down to the frames and all systems inspected for wear, damage and defects. Wherever needed, like-new remanufactured or new components and systems are installed. All remanufactured parts and components are certified to the OEM specifications. Body work and improvements in the cab are done at the same time. Vehicles are then reassembled and tested. The result is a “sameas-new” vehicle with a three-year warranty. “All in all, I had high expectations and they met them,” says Brandon Mortenson, fleet manager for Oklahoma-based Hanor Company, which operates 200 trucks and other vehicles across seven states. “Every step of the way, they were very professional. They didn’t over-hype themselves. They said they can do this, it will look like this — and that’s what they did.” Hanor has put three pickups through reman: a Ford F-550, a Ford F-150 and a Chevy

Mortenson expects to send at least six trucks a year through the process. Reman has the potential to give Hanor and other fleet owners more buying power and options for end-of-life vehicles. “This is a natural evolution of well-established automotive parts remanufacturing, but applied to the whole vehicle,” says Greig Latham, founder and managing director, Vehicle Reman LLC, which remanufactures Class 1 to 5 vehicles. “We have a proven system for remanufacturing trucks, SUVs, vans and other vehicles. When customers see the

same-as-new quality and remarkable savings, reman really sells itself. The main challenge for us is many fleet buyers don’t yet know about reman and what it can do.” “The savings from reman make our customers more competitive and poised for growth,” says Steve Belden, director of sales and marketing for Vehicle Reman. “Those who incorporate reman into their fleet management strategy find it easier to gauge, reduce and manage total life-cycle costs. They are able to obtain like-new quality even when the budget doesn’t allow for purchasing new trucks. That’s a huge win for any company.” Reman vehicles are engineered to order, Belden says, so it’s easy for customers to upfit or obtain specialty equipment. The company has a smartphone app

that enables customers to submit vehicle information and get a quick quote. An ideal reman candidate is a Ford, Chevrolet or Dodge around seven years old with more than 100,000 miles in service. Vehicles as old as 20 years can undergo the process.

TARP FOR SAFETY

Even if it is not specifically required by state law, tarping your load often makes sense.

T

arping laws vary by state. Oregon, Wyoming, Wisconsin, Illinois, Arkansas, Louisiana, Indiana, Alabama, Maine, New Jersey and Delaware are the only states without truck tarping requirements. Some state laws also specify how tarps are to be secured and stipulate severe penalties that go along with violations. But there is more to tarping loads than the legal requirements — there is also the liability if flying debris from your trucks causes an accident or property damage. In addition, while some states do not specifically require tarping, commercial trucks are still subject to Federal Carrier Safety Administration regulations, which state: “No vehicle shall be driven or moved on any highway unless the vehicle is so constructed or loaded as to prevent any of its load from dropping, shifting,

40 EQUIPM ENT T OD AY | May 2019 ET0519_40-41_TransTarp_CB.indd 40

leaking or otherwise escaping therefrom.” To meet tarping requirements, it may be tempting to purchase the lowest price solution available. But purchase price is only part of the equation when selecting a tarp system for a dump truck or trailer. Cycle times, downtime and repair costs can escalate as you try to save a few dollars. There are also safety concerns with some of the less expensive hand tarps and manual systems. You don’t want people crawling around the trucks trying to pull tarps over the load. It is much safer to be able to tarp the load from ground level or the truck cab. Not all tarp systems are equal in terms of durability. There are a variety of tarping systems for dump trucks that can range from a few hundred to several thousand dollars. An owner/operator has to consider the application to determine the specifications required of the system. The different systems include manual arm, automatic arm and front to back cable truck tarping systems. The material to be hauled often determines which system

Tarps can be divided into four basic types: mesh, poly, vinyl and canvas. Different materials are appropriate for different requirements. For example, only poly and vinyl tarps claim to be totally waterproof, while a mesh tarp is designed to let air pass through it while holding back debris. will be most effective. Heaped loads, construction debris or irregular materials may be served best by an arm or flip-type system. With a pull-out or cablestyle system, the fabric being drawn across this type of material could get torn, whereas the flip or arm system lays the fabric down on top of what you are handling. If you are hauling dirt, soil or asphalt, a pull-out system can work well for shorter bodies, while a cable or electric arm system would be best for longer applications.

AUTOMATIC SYSTEMS GEARED FOR PRODUCTION Automatic configurations offer several different power source options, including electric, hydraulic or air, but the most popular are driven by electric motors. Automatic tarping systems can save time and, since the operator stays in the cab, increase jobsite safety. Drivers are simply not allowed out of the cab on some jobsites. Gear motors on automatic tarp systems can also influence reliability. In the early days, there were not any purpose-made gear motors for tarp

The material to be hauled often determines which system will be most effective. Heaped loads, construction debris or irregular material may be served best by an arm system or a flip-type system. systems. They were adapted winch motors and things of that nature. Now, there are purposemade tarp motors that are very effective.

SELECT AN APPROPRIATE MATERIAL The type of tarp for a particular application has a major influence on reliability and performance. Tarps can be divided into four basic types: mesh, poly, vinyl and canvas. The different materials are appropriate for different requirements. For example, only poly and vinyl tarps claim to be totally waterproof, while a mesh

tarp is designed to let air pass through it while holding back debris. In applications such as hauling sand and aggregate, a mesh tarp is better than a solid vinyl tarp because it lets the air through. It is also typically lighter weight, doesn’t blow around as much and is easier to handle. If you haul demolition debris that is likely to be sharp, asphalt where you have to contain the heat or anything that is sensitive to having water on it, then you are going to need a vinyl tarp. For asphalt, the industry has gravitated to two types of tarps — a 14-oz. vinyl that has a special urethane coating or an 18-oz. vinyl — that are a heavier PVC-type vinyl. There are also heavier tarp weights available, each with its advantages and drawbacks. For instance, 18-oz. fabric is a common weight for truck tarps.

There is a 22-oz. fabric that is 25% stronger and therefore may last longer, but it does roll harder in cold winter temperatures.

AVOID UNNECESSARY WEAR AND TEAR Too often, tarp systems are damaged not by ordinary wear and tear but by abuse. Loading operations account for the majority of damage. This includes the loader operator dumping large rocks or debris on the tarp system, as well as running into the system with the loader. Damage prevention should include both the loader operator and the truck driver. Wind is also an enemy of tarping systems. Keeping the tarp fabric taut increases its lifespan. It is also important to face the truck into the

When deploying an automatic system, try to keep speeds to 10 mph or less. Tarp systems should never be run down the road while open.

Tarp systems should never be run down the road while open. The wind will whip the tarp around and shred it prematurely. In addition to making the tarp last longer, extending the tarp will increase your fuel economy. Some studies have shown that fuel economy can improve up to 10%. ET

Telematics Adds Efficiency & Aids Tax Rebates Verizon Connect is a mobile workforce solution for fleet and field personnel. It offers a full suite of services, such as GPS tracking solutions, billing and invoicing.

Verizon Connect had the solutions Gravel Conveyors Inc. needed to boost overall operations efficiency.

G

ravel Conveyors Inc. (GCI) wanted to improve its operations efficiency. It runs a fleet of 12 Stone Slinger trucks and five dump trucks with plans to add 10 more dump trucks this spring. The company is also the Stone Slinger local representative and sells the equipment to other contractors. In order to boost efficiency, company owner Travis Pettijohn examined several technology companies, and determined that only Verizon Connect had all of the solutions that GCI needed to boost overall operations efficiency. “The problem we were trying to solve involved metrics,” says Aaron Witmer, operations manager, GCI. “We wanted to be as efficient as possible with every aspect of our fleet. “In the past, we had used GPS tracking systems, but all they did was tell us where our trucks were,” he continues. “We use all aspects of Verizon Connect — not only GPS tracking, but also maintenance and repair tracking. We also needed a way to more accurately clock our drivers. When they leave our facilities, they are clocked in and when they return at the end of the day, they are clocked out. Only Verizon Connect has a platform that has all of these aspects working together.”

BENEFITS FOR EMPLOYEES, TOO “Once people started using Verizon Connect and the new ways of doing things, they became addicted to it because it’s so much easier,” says Witmer. “There is no more punching of the clock, no more writing time sheets.” Through the use of GPS, the company’s mechanics can independently locate trucks that are experiencing an issue in the field. “Everyone has the app on their phones and everyone uses it, from our mechanics to our drivers to dispatch,” Witmer points out. Some of the biggest benefits are experienced by dispatch. “Dispatch is probably the most obsessed with it, because it makes his job so much easier,” says Witmer. “Now he knows when a truck is going to be down, and

he knows exactly the tire life on a truck, and even what driver is in the truck, so drivers can change assignments and dispatch still knows which driver is on which jobsite.” Another feature that GCI says wasn’t available in competitive products is the digitization and automation of information. “You don’t have to check paperwork. You don’t have to struggle to remember when truck drivers change trucks due to maintenance. Dispatch knows that because it’s right on the dispatch screen in front of him,” Witmer explains. “When drivers change trucks is one of the things that makes dispatch difficult. Maintenance and driver assignments are also important to dispatch.”

ADDED TAX BENEFIT Besides the efficiency gains, Verizon Connect offers another benefit — tax rebates for off-road fuel use. On-road diesel is taxed, but off-road diesel is not. It’s impractical to fit a truck with two fuel tanks, so the company burns taxed on-road fuel all the time and applies for a tax rebate on the portion of fuel burned off road.

Gravel Conveyors Inc. is a Stone Slinger dealer, and the company operates a fleet of 12 trucks similar to this one fixed with the conveyors.

“We run our Slingers on PTO (power take-off ); that is what turns the machine on when it gets to a jobsite,” says Witmer. “Stone Slingers are a piece of equipment secured to the back of a semi-truck. When we turn on that PTO to operate the heavy equipment, we are running that off the same engine and the same fuel as when we’re driving down the road. That fuel is on-road diesel and we are taxed for that. However, when we run the equipment in off-road applications, we can track that time and submit that data to the government for a rebate.” In order to claim this rebate from the federal government, the information must be both accurate and something you can prove. “You can’t just say that you used it in an off-road application for so many hours,” says Witmer. With Verizon Connect, GCI knows how long the trucks run with the PTO switch engaged, and GCI can use that information to file for the rebate. “Verizon Connect knows when the PTO is turned on, how long it’s on, where it’s at and to which job it is accredited. Then it turns all that information into an easy to read PDF document that we can submit to the government,” says Witmer. “And that rebate is huge, because we run the machines in an off-road application more often than we do an on-road application.” ET

SHINES A SPOTLIGHT

on Sustainability, Efficiency

Alternative energy options stole the show at the world’s largest construction event.

T

he world’s largest trade show, bauma, was held last month in Munich, Germany. With it came an array of new product launches from construction equipment manufacturers big and small. Not only was the show immense in size but so were the booths, machines on display and the excitement of attendees and companies at the show. A post-show report said over 620,000 visitors from more than 200 countries attended the event — 40,000 more than attended the last edition of the show in 2016. With the vast number of companies and attendees this year, it’s evident the global construction industry is still going strong. Many companies stated during press conferences that they believe the market will remain positive for the foreseeable future. While it’s hard to reflect on all of the news and product

launches from bauma 2019, one thing that was evident was the increased emphasis in the industry on alternative energy — whether through hybridization, electrification or alternative fuel. Electrified or hybrid machines could be seen at many booths, including those of OEMs and component manufacturers.

Equipment’s wheel loader concept, ProjectTETRA (www.ForConstructionPros. com/21063402), which runs on methane. Designed to offer the same performance as its diesel-powered 821 wheel loader, ProjectTETRA uses a methane engine (www.oemoffhighway. com/21064883) from sister company FPT

ALTERNATIVE POWER SOURCES One of the biggest draws for attendees was the unveiling of Case Construction

Case’s concept ProjectTETRA can operate using biomethane for a more sustainable carbon neutral production cycle, or on natural gas.

Volvo debuted the first of its electric compact equipment, the ECR25 excavator and L25 wheel loader.

ELECTROMOBILITY GAINING GROUND IN HEAVY MACHINERY AND EQUIPMENT Powertrain electrification continues to advance, and the heavy machinery and equipment industry is no exception. Even though there are currently few models commercially available, new battery electric vehicles are being introduced and are coming to the market. In certain equipment segments, the total cost of ownership (TCO) could be up to 30% lower for battery electric vehicles than for their conventional diesel-powered counterparts. Under certain assumptions, savings of more

Industrial designed specifically for construction applications. It can operate using biomethane for a more sustainable carbon neutral production cycle, or on natural gas. Using methane will offer efficiency improvements and emissions savings, as well as noise reduction benefits, which are becoming increasingly important when working in city centers and residential areas. than 60% on operating costs more than balance out the higher price of an electric vehicle and battery, which could cost 30% to 90% more. These findings emerged from a new McKinsey study, “Heavy machinery & equipment: Capturing the industry’s electrifying momentum.” The management consulting firm published the report to coincide with bauma 2019. Komatsu plans to combine its experience with hybrid construction equipment and electric forklift trucks to develop a 5-ton all-electric compact excavator.

Volvo Construction Equipment debuted the first of its electric compact equipment, the ECR25 excavator and L25 wheel loader (www.ForConstructionPros. com/21063502). In place of the engine, the machines utilize lithium-ion batteries and electric motors for operation. Both are capable of working a full eight hours, ensuring customers will not have to worry about unplanned downtime in order to recharge the equipment. Onboard chargers enable overnight charging using a regular household plug, and a fast charging option will also be available. Komatsu announced plans to combine its experience with hybrid construction equipment and electric forklift trucks to develop a 5-ton all-electric mini-excavator (www. ForConstructionPros. com/21063684). The charger, high-voltage converter and other devices have been developed to deliver excavation performance on par with the internal combustion model of the same power output, while achieving zero exhaust emissions and a dramatic reduction in noise. The new electric compact excavator uses the

easy-maintenance battery that powers the Komatsu FE-Series electric forklift trucks. From a full charge, this battery enables two to six hours of run time (depending on operating conditions). The battery also allows for quick charging — for example, during a lunch break — extending available working hours.

ELECTRIFIED COMPONENTS

Meritor launched a full line of axles for materialhandling applications that includes electric axles. Designed specifically for off-highway applications, the products are capable of withstanding the harsh environments in which construction and other heavy-duty equipment operate. The line of products includes compact, highspeed motors controlled by power electronics from John Deere Electronic Solutions.

Component manufacturers also unveiled new products aimed at helping OEMs transition to more efficient and environmentally friendly machines. AxleTech, for instance, introduced its AFE Series e-axle (www.oemoffhighway.com/21062920), which features a new modular eCarrier System and integrated interchangeable water/glycol-cooled motors, as well as single-speed, two-speed or four-speed gearbox. The electric powertrain system is designed to fit into existing vehicle configurations to ease installation for OEMs, and takes the place of a traditional powertrain. Meritor also debuted an electrified axle FPT’s hybrid concept consists of an (www.oemoffhighway. engine and E-Flywheel and E-Turbocharger, com/21063486) as part which recover energy that can be reused of a full line of axles for material-handling applito power a piece of equipment. cations that the company announced during the show. On the engine side of things, John Deere Power Systems powertrains that pair the engine introduced electric drivetrain with motors, batteries and components (www.oemoffhighother electronics could be seen way.com/21063698), as well. at many engine manufacturers’

stands. Kubota Engine Europe showed the next generation of its hybrid engine in a forklift to demonstrate a potential application for its use. FPT also showcased its hybrid concept (www.oemoffhighway. com/21064392) consisting of an engine paired with an E-Flywheel and E-Turbocharger, both of which recover energy that can then be reused to power a piece of equipment. This helps to reduce fuel consumption by up to 8%, while improving transient response up to 50%. These additional benefits are an important aspect of developing alternatively powered products, as sustainability alone is not enough of a driver for customers. While sustainability may be a driving factor at some point in the future, for now, offerings that provide an array of features that help customers improve their operational costs and productivity will continue to be the most desirable in the construction marketplace. Formalize Rental & Service to

Simplify Your Business Contracting for rental and parts and service needs can help you cost-effectively and efficiently manage equipment.

B

usiness is tough — always has been and always will be — and getting tougher as new digital and robotic processes hit the market. If you are doing things the same way you were five years ago, you are probably behind the ball, finding jobs harder to win and carrying more costs on your books than you need to. For example, look at what’s happening in the equipment rental world. The percentage of equipment in the field owned by rental companies and equipment dealers keeps increasing as more contractors look to use specialized equipment and realize they can’t own and operate their own fleet better than a rental provider. The end result of this shift is a more reliable bidding process, lower costs, outsourced maintenance and cartage and zero liabilities on your balance sheet with zero monthly note payments for purchased units. Also consider the jobsite management tools that were not around five to 10 years ago. You can track daily equipment usage and personnel costs; review jobsites using drones; and receive notice of potential equipment service needs. There are numerous other new systems and procedures, as well, that you can apply to your work to allow for competitive bids, lower costs and higher profits and cash flow. Using these new tools reduces your job and business stress. What’s not to like about them?

STRIVE FOR A WIN-WIN AGREEMENT Another area in which I see more interest is formalizing rental contracts and parts and service needs. I see this as a benefit not only for local work but work that extends beyond your local sphere of influence.

One way to do this is to create a Master Rental Contract to use for your equipment needs. It should be a win-win document — one that is more tailored to what you need from a rental provider in terms of: ˜˜ delivery and maintenance ˜˜ the insurance and liability terms you are willing to agree to ˜˜ a pricing schedule — maybe even a seasonable pricing schedule To top this off, the contract should cover your project needs no matter where it might be. If all you do is local business, this process works. If you cover multiple states, it really works because you avoid: ˜˜ chasing down vendors and filling out new credit applications; ˜˜ reviewing 10 different rental contracts or service agreements that may contain terms you may not be able to live with; ˜˜ and avoid trying to comply with each vendors’ insurance requirements. But this document must be fair and a win-win. You will be responsible for the condition of the equipment. You will be responsible for doing your due diligence when equipment shows up on your jobsite. You will have responsibility to make sure employees know

54  EQUIPM ENT T ODAY | May 2019 ET0519_54-56_RuntheBiz_BC.indd 54

how to safely operate the equipment. And if an accident occurs, your company and the equipment supplier and equipment manufacturer will be in the same potential liability boat. If your agreement covers these risks fairly, and you can supply a significant amount of business to the vendor, they will usually find a way to accommodate you. The term of the document can be one year or five years and contain a provision that states the billing rates are reviewable annually for longer-term projects.

The dealer you contract with should cover your local work but also communicate with “sister” dealers for your out-of-state work.

VOLUME AND LOCATION MATTER Of course, the pricing deals you get will depend on the volume you can deliver. Whether it be for rental equipment or parts or service, volume will be the key to what rates you get. Consequently, I would do some homework and compile a list of what you spent over the last five years for rental, parts and service (both internal and external). Then, present that schedule to a national dealer or rental organization and ask what they can do to lower your costs while at the same time make your local and out-of-state work more efficient. The dealer you contract with should cover your local work but also communicate with “sister” dealers for your out-of-state

AC Business Media work. What they usually do is follow the rates in the agreement and then adjust as necessary with the dealer in that area. This is an important point and needs to be discussed with the various dealer locations with which you will be working. A call should be made to both the local dealer and outof-state dealer before you leave for a jobsite to ensure they will abide by the agreement. If they will not, then the local dealer should take on any additional cost over and above the contract terms. You can work out national agreements with both dealers and rental companies. Since dealers have more parts and service availability, who you use would depend on the type of work you do and how much machine downtime could impact your job profitability. Also of interest is the difference in costs between major cities and rural cities. These pricing differences need to be part of the equation. If you find a local pricing different from your contract price, a conversation must take place to adjust the price as necessary.

KNOW THE LAW One last point regarding this type of contract concerns the new Wayfair Law, which impacts online shippers and sales tax requirements. If you are buying parts online, you may find your costs going up between 5% to 7%, depending on which state you work in and which state the parts are delivered to. The point is where parts are delivered or where service work is done could save you some money. This is a complicated area, so proper expertise is required to address the issue. ET
