Greetings All, I hope everyone has had a wonderful 2016 and is ready to jump into a fantastic 2017! In these pages you will find opportunities for every member of the family to make the most of this fresh new year by honing a skill, enhancing a resume, practicing a hobby or trying something new. Here in Community Education we are constantly trying to enhance ourselves and our offerings to meet the needs of our community. If you have any class suggestions please feel free to give us a call. We appreciate this more than we can ever express! Over the past few months in Community Education we have crafted a mission statement, punchline, and Facebook page. Read books about Splat, a cat who’s scared and shy about doing new things but learns to be brave with his best friend Seymore who is a mouse! We will create a craft using Splat as our inspiration.

Beginner Guitar Lessons, Gr 5-9 Michael Crowell Individual Lessons- Learn proper guitar technique and habits for maximum enjoyment of playing this instrument. Guitars will be provided for you to use if you do not have one. Individual lessons are 30 minutes in length. Grandmasters of Chess, Gr K-5 Youth Enrichment League New and returning students are invited. Join this “sport of the mind” and be part of your school’s chess club. YEL Chess has proven excellence in dozens of schools. We have 50+ chess lessons for all levels, hundreds of puzzles for all levels and our teachers are among the best in Minnesota. The lessons progress from rudimentary concepts through higher-level theories. Our activity books are formatted to be accessible to beginners, yet challenge intermediate and advanced students to apply deeper understanding of chess concepts. Babysitter Training, Age 11+ Emergency Outfitters This course follows the American Academy of PediatricsBabysitter Lessons and Safety Trainings (BLAST). Students will learn current practices for safety and injury prevention, first aid basics, feeding and caring for infants, how to handle behavior problems and how to manage their babysitting business. Students will receive a reference book, recipe and game handouts, babysitting bag and first aid kit. Please bring a snack. Class Fee: $57 Mon-Thu • Mar 13-16 • 3:00-6:00pm • FIS Room 305

F.A.S.T. Kids, Ages 7-10 Emergency Outfitters First Aid and Safety Trained Kids is a 6-hour course. Lessons cover basic first aid, water safety, vehicle safety, home emergencies, injury prevention, personal safety and healthy living. This course helps prepare children for staying at home alone. Students will receive a book and construct a home first aid kit as part of the class. Class Fee: $43 Mon-Tue • Apr 24-25 • 3:00-6:00pm • FES Room 111

S.M.A.R.T. Kids, Ages 5-7 Emergency Outfitters Safety Minded And Response Trained Kids is a 4-hour program for 5-7 year olds. Lessons cover basic health and safety, injury prevention, and healthy living. Students construct a first aid kit as part of the class. Class Fee: $29 Mon • Mar 27 • 3:00-6:30pm • FES Room 111

Firearms Safety Training, Ages 12+ Foley Community Education with the assistance of several DNR trained volunteer firearm safety instructors will provide firearm safety training this spring. The class will be a combination of classroom and field experience covering the safe operation and functioning of firearms as required by the MN Dept. of Natural Resources. PARENT NOTES: Students taking this course can be 11 years old but must turn 12 by December 31, 2017. If an 11 year old takes the class and passes the test the state DNR office will hold their card until they turn 12. Please do not allow your child to bring a gun to class or the field test. All firearms will be provided. Attendance at all class sessions and good behavior is expected of all participants in order to pass the course. There is a lot of reading homework for this class that you will need to assist your child with. Students must pass a State DNR written test in order to take the field test on April 22. Both tests must be passed in order to complete the course and receive certification. The field test will only be given on Saturday, April 22. Testing times and maps to the range will be distributed in class. Class will run April 3, 4, 10, 11, 17 and 18 from 6:00-8:30pm. A parent or legal guardian MUST attend the first day of class to complete registration paperwork for their minor child. We are hoping that the registration will be completed no later than 7:00pm. Class will be held in the FIS Cafeteria. Use door I-21 to enter and exit school. The cost is $7.50 Community Ed Fee +$7.50 DNR fee once class is completed. *The DNR now requires the $7.50 fee paid online after course completion to obtain certificate. Forensics of CSI: Where Has My Little Dog Gone?, Age 10+ Little Buddy has been dognapped! Now that the ransom has been paid and he is safely back home, it’s time to examine the evidence and catch the culprit. Students will perform several scientific and forensic experiments with the evidence to determine which of the 64 inhabitants of Newton took Buddy. Lil’ Kickers Tae Kwon Do, Ages 4-6 Dawn Opheim This program is designed as a precursor to Youth Tae Kwon Do classes. We build a foundation for Tae Kwon Do training, while improving motor skills, memory, discipline, confidence and more. We present in fun and exciting formats to keep the child interested and excited while teaching them important physical and behavioral skills to develop good habits early in life. Youth Tae Kwon Do Beginner/ Intermediate, Ages 7+ Dawn Opheim Kids who can control their bodies can control their minds. Through training on memory, balance, and coordination, students develop focus, self-confidence, and self-defense. Learn the basics of pole vaulting! Get ready for the spring season by learning some of the basic techniques of using a proper pole, setting up a position on a runway, jumping and body movements, and proper turning and landing methods. Time will be spent teaching some of the techniques and practicing on the equipment. Students should have workout clothes and proper shoes for use on the fieldhouse track. School of Fish ON ICE, Gr 3-Adult School of Fish ON ICE is a 2 1/2 hour kids fishing class open to kids (and adults!) from grades 3 and up taught by pro angler and television show host Mike Frisch. Students learn about finding fish under the ice and some great ways to catch them. School of Fish graduates leave class “water ready” equipped with a Shakespeare Fishing rod & reel, tackle box with Northland Tackle, the School of Fish workbook, a KLN Family Brands snack bag, $10 Cabela’s gift card, and much more. Most importantly, however, they have the knowledge to find their own fishing spots, rig their own fishing rigs, and catch fish! One adult may accompany a child at no extra charge, provided they share the equipment pack. We are going to draw one School of Fish ON ICE “graduate” at year end to appear on our award-winning television series which is available on Fox Sports North and a dozen local network affiliates across the Midwest as well. School of Fish Open Water, Gr 3-Adult School of Fish is a 2 1/2 hour kids fishing class open to kids (and adults!) from grades 3 and up taught by pro angler and television show host Mike Frisch. Students learn about lakes, finding fish in those lakes and some great ways to catch them.  Also, a parent or another adult can attend (it is encouraged) for no additional cost, if the pair share the equipment package.   For the enrollment fee, kids get: a Shakespeare rod & reel, tackle box with Northland Tackle, a Cabela’s $10 gift card, School of Fish workbook, KLN snack pack, and a Fish ON Kids book. Most importantly, however, they leave class with the knowledge and skills to go fishing! Classroom Driver Education, Ages 15+ Roger Eggert A-Z Drivers Instruction from Isle, MN, provides 30 hours of classroom drivers training. The course meets the requirements to obtain a driving permit. Students must be 15 in order to take the permit test. We encourage taking this class as close to when a student will take the permit test as possible. Attendance at all 30 hours of the class is required. Adults wishing to get a driving permit are welcome to take this class also. Behind the Wheel instruction can be contracted on an individual basis with A-Z Drivers Instruction. The $20 Community Education fee is due with registration. ZAPS Test Prep for Grades 10-12 This intensive five hour test preparation workshop is designed to coach high school juniors to do their best on the ACT test. The participant can expect to receive first hand familiarity with the form and content of the ACT test, including practice on each type of test item; a battery of tactics and strategies for dealing with each section of the test; techniques to reduce ‘test anxiety’; a comprehensive study guide filled with tips, strategies and detailed answer explanations and four work booklets containing 24 tests that provide opportunities for extensive review and practice. GRASP Math and/or Reading Grasp is a 9 week correspondence program that helps students maintain reading and math skills over the summer. It should take your child approximately one hour each week during the summer to complete each weekly lesson. It is recommended that you order the materials for the grade your child just completed. Once lessons are completed, you just put them in the mail in the envelopes provided. They are corrected and then returned to you. Instruction sheets found in each packet provide all the necessary information. Please note this program is intended to help maintain skills your child mastered and will not be effective for teaching skills your child is missing. Class Fee: $33 for one subject or $54 for both subjects. The deadline to sign up is April 22, 2017. All materials will be sent home with your child the last week of school.

Build Your Own Fishing Rod Gary Wicks

Beginning guitar lessons for adults! Have you ever wanted to learn the basics of playing guitar? Come to a group class for 8 sessions, 45 minutes in length. Gain a solid foundation in guitar technique, practice habits, learn about types of guitars and genres,  and resources to assist you in playing guitar.  Guitars will be provided for you to borrow if you do not have one.  No musical background necessary.   Instructor may advise on the purchase of supplementary books and music for students.  Individual lessons may also be scheduled.  Contact the Community Education office for individual lessons. Build a fishing rod from start to finish with Gary Wicks. Gary has been building and instructing fishing rod classes for the past 35 years at his shop in Anoka. Find the spine on the rod blank, fit the handle, reel seat and fore grip to the rod blank and glue them on. Fishing rods will be monogrammed with the builder’s name. The fishing rods will be taken by me to my shop for gluing. Participants are welcome to come and glue their own at my shop. Finished rods will be returned to Community Education for pick up.  Participants will have a choice to build a 6’-6” medium light spinning rod or casting rod. Smart Driver 4 Hour Refresher Russ Holland The AARP Smart Driver Program is the nation’s first and largest refresher course for drivers age 55 and older that has helped millions of drivers remain safe on today’s roads. English as a Second Language (ESL) classes are for adults whose native language is not English. Classes are designed to help adults develop English speaking, listening, reading and writing skills according to their individual goals. We have six separate levels for the ESL student to learn and build their English skills, from novice to advanced. The registration deadline is one week prior to the start of the activity. All classes and activities will be filled on a first come, first served basis. Registrations later than one week before the start of the activity will be accepted if space is available. You will be notified if an activity is full or canceled. Registration is not complete until payment is received. You do not need to be a resident of the Foley School District to take part in our Community Education programs (except for School Readiness and ECFE).
