Community Education Alyssa Stewart, Community Education Coordinator My name is Alyssa Stewart, I am the new Community Education Coordinator at Foley Public Schools. Another summer is here and gone and school is about to start. I hope you have had a wonderful summer. When summer ends your fun does not have to end! As always, Community Education has opportunities for every member of your family to get involved and have fun. There are opportunities to hone a skill, enhance your resume, practice a hobby, and to try something new.

Classes are starting right away in Community Education. This is a great opportunity for your child to get involved in after school programs. I believe involvement is a key aspect we need to encourage in our students; being a part of a team or group helps build a strong, responsible and reliable being.

Also, our annual Youth Expo is almost here as well! This year’s theme is Back to the Fifties. The expo is Thursday September 17th, 5:30-7:30pm in the Fieldhouse. We invite and encourage everyone to come and join us; this is a family event with fun for all. The goal of this event is to showcase all the great opportunities our community has to offer families.

Finally, I am always looking for suggestions of new class offerings and ideas. Please let me know and I will do what I can to help you!

F.A.S.T. Kids, Ages 7-10 Emergency Outfitters First Aid and Safety Trained Kids is a 6-hour course.

Lessons cover basic first aid, water safety, vehicle safety, home emergencies, injury prevention, personal safety and healthy living. This course helps prepare children for staying at home alone. Students will receive a book and construct a home first aid kit as part of the class.

Babysitter Training, Ages 11+ Emergency Outfitters This course follows the American Academy of PediatricsBabysitter Lessons and Safety Trainings (BLAST).

Students will learn current practices for safety and injury prevention, first aid basics, feeding and caring for infants, how to handle behavior problems and how to manage their babysitting business. One Act Play, Gr 6-9 Who needs several acts in a play when just one will do?

Try your theatrical hand at a short but sweet production.

The title has yet to be determined but there is sure to be a role perfect for you. Tryouts are the first day and rehearsals begin the second. Information on the Thursday, Friday and Saturday performances in early December will be announced at rehearsals. Listen for announcements in late October about what show we will perform this year. When Harold Hill, a traveling con man, arrives in River City, he convinces the locals to start a band by purchasing the uniforms and instruments from him. His intention is to flee as soon as he receives the money. Librarian Marian Paroo suspects Harold is a fraud, but holds her tongue since her moody brother, Winthrop, is excited about the band. As Harold begins to develop feelings for Marian, he faces a difficult decision about skipping town.

Classroom Driver Education, Ages 15+ Roger Eggert

Teen Collision Avoidance & Parent Awareness Program

This course provides 30 hours of classroom drivers training. The course meets the requirements to obtain a driving permit. Students must be 15 in order to take the permit test. We encourage taking this class as close to when a student will take the permit test as possible.

Attendance at all 30 hours of the class is required.

Adults wishing to get a driving permit are welcome to take this class also. Behind the Wheel instruction can be contracted on an individual basis with A-Z Drivers Instruction. The $20 Community Education fee is due with registration. The $85 fee is due to A-Z Drivers Instruction the first day of class.

Automobile crashes remain the leading cause of death among teens ages 15-18 in Minnesota. The MN Highway Safety & Research Center at St. Cloud State University and State Farm Insurance have teamed up to offer a fast paced opportunity for young drivers to learn advanced driving skills that target at risk maneuvers like off-road and skid recovery, evasive maneuvers, and emergency braking to name a few. Training is provided in our vehicles on a closed course. Parents will learn the real risks teen drivers are faced with and review the Graduated License Law among other topics. Participants must possess a valid driver’s license or permit, and be able to operate a vehicle independently. The fee for the course is $15. Participants can register for the class online at www.mnsafetycenter.org and call the MHSRC at 320-255-3123. Class Fee: $15

Teen Driver Safety Parent Awareness Program Roger Eggert Experts on young driver behavior agree that effective parent involvement makes a difference in reducing young driver crashes. This class will: 1. Increase parent and youth awareness of the most common risks for teen drivers (it may not be what you think!) and Minnesota’s teen driver laws; 2. Increase parental understanding of the strong influence they have on their teen’s driving behavior; 3. Provide information and tools parents can use to help support their teen in driving safely. ZAP The ACT This intensive five hour test preparation workshop is designed to coach high school juniors to do their best on the ACT test. The participants can expect to receive: •First hand familiarity with the form and content of the ACT test, including practice on each type of test item.

• Techniques to reduce ‘test anxiety’ • A comprehensive Study Guide filled with tips, strategies and detailed answer explanations.

Lil’ Kickers Tae Kwon Do, Ages 4-6 Dawn Opheim This program is designed as a precursor to regular Tae Kwon Do classes for young children. The child is taught material to help build a foundation for Tae Kwon Do training, while improving motor skills, memory, discipline, confidence and more. The material is presented in fun and exciting formats to keep the child interested and excited while teaching them important physical and behavioral skills to develop good habits early in life.

Please wear comfortable clothing. A white belt test to earn a uniform will be given after 1 month of lessons and costs $40. Children will be eligible for additional belt testing after 3 months of lessons. More information about these options will be given in class. Youth Tae Kwon Do, Ages 7+ Dawn Opheim Kids who can control their bodies can control their minds.

Evolution Tae Kwon Do challenges youth both physically and mentally to help them achieve their true potential in everyday life. Through training on memory, balance, and coordination in Tae Kwon Do students develop focus, self-confidence, and self-defense. Through setting goals and expectations based on each individual, Tae Kwon Do creates an environment where every participant can achieve success. It does not matter who finishes first, the focus is on each individual striving for similar goals with the support of peers and instructors. Please wear comfortable clothing. Foley Falcon Archery: Advanced Continue to work on your archery skills this fall before the season starts! We will focus on improving form, release, and scores. Foley Falcon Archery: Beginner This class will help students learn eye dominancy, concentrate on range rules, safety rules and fundamentals of archery, scoring and fun events using The Genesis Bow equipment. Archery: Girl Day Shoot Out This class will be a quick intro to archery just for girls, this includes mom, aunt, sister or grandma. If you feel uncomfortable trying this sport out amongst the boys, this is a chance for just the girls. The class will go through range safety instruction and rules, getting a bow set to the correct draw weight and doing some shooting. Snacks will be provided as well as all of the equipment. Foley Falcon Archery Take your student to the next level in Archery Competition! We will be competing against other schools in traveling leagues! Using GENESIS BOW EQUIPMENT ONLY, as to follow with NASP State rule guidelines. Practice times are at least twice a week.

We rely on parents to help and will only have as many teams as coaches. Coaches are given a bag of balls to use during the program and jerseys for their team. Fencing classes teach the art of sword fighting. SAFETY is our first priority. We supply safety swords, protective masks and jackets, and a high-octane, inclusive environment. Join family, neighbors and friends on Thanksgiving evening at the fieldhouse to get some exercise and have fun after that huge turkey dinner! Play basketball or volleyball or come to walk or run on the track. Baby strollers are allowed for this event. No footballs please and all fieldhouse rules still apply. Bring a nonperishable food item for the Cross Center or donate $1 at the door.

Renaissance Festival Step back into the 16th century to a world of knights, royalty, peasants, and jousting. Bring the whole family along to experience the live entertainment, period costumes, artisan booths for endless shopping, and a bountiful treasure of delicious and unique foods as you eat, drink and be merry - Renaissance style! Taylors Falls Boat Tour Luncheon Since 1906 thousands of tourists have enjoyed the scenic beauty of the world famous Great Princess of the St. Croix River excursion boat. The boat pilot and tour guide will point out the unique rock formations that were left behind as the glaciers retreated thousands of years ago set against the beautiful colors of autumn. As we float along, enjoy a delicious lunch of shredded chicken, garlic mashed potatoes, coleslaw, baked beans, assorted rolls, a brownie and coffee. Plymouth Playhouse Presents Christmas My Way Celebrate in swinging style this holiday season with Old Blue Eyes. Nothing is silent about this night where four singers serve up cool versions of Sinatra mainstays like “Fly Me To The Moon,” “Love and Marriage,” and groovy versions of Sinatra Christmas hits like “Winter Wonderland,” and “Silver Bells”. 101 Market Join the fun on Friday Oct 16th. We are taking our 2nd annual trip to the 101 Market in Otsego. Students will get to enjoy the “Mustang” corn maze, giant corn pit, duck races, petting zoo, pedal cart, potato slinger, and the giant spider web! Bake-n-Take Holiday Goodies Cheryl Pick Let us help you de-stress the holidays with this cooking class. Cheryl Pick and members of the school district food service staff invite you to a class that will provide you with trays full of delectable holiday cookies and candies!

The ingredients will be pre-mixed so all you have to do is make, bake and take! The class will make 10 different kinds of cookies and candies and you will take home one dozen of each kind. Class Fee: $50 FHS-Kitchen Session 1: Tue, Dec 8, 6:00-9:00pm Session 2: Sat, Dec 12, 12:30-3:30pm

Infant Massage Bond with your baby and increase your parenting skills through the loving art of infant massage. Learn the benefits and easy-to-follow techniques that promote relaxation and better sleep, natural relief from common discomforts such as gas, teething, illness and more. Also learn simple exercises to enhance baby’s physical, emotional and cognitive development. Dress comfortably as we will be sitting on the floor. Feel free to feed and change baby as needed during class. Up to two adults may accompany baby in class. Remember dads are equally essential to baby’s growth and development.

Grandparents or other care givers are also welcome.

Beginning this winter..... Swimming Lessons!

If your child was in summer swimming lessons, we encourage them to attend open swim this fall to practice what they learned.

Level I: Intro to Water Skills

Students will learn to feel comfortable in the water and to enjoy the water safely. Suggested minimum age 4. Class size: 6 maximum.

Level II: Fundamental Aquatic Skills

Students explore simultaneous and alternating arm and leg motions on the front and back to lay the foundation for futures strokes. Adds to skills begun in Level I. Student must have passed Level I. Class size: 8 maximum.

Level III: Stroke Development

Students will learn to coordinate the front and back crawl, elements of the butterfly, treading water and rules for head-first entries. Build on the skills of Level II with guided practice. Student must have passed Level II. Class size: 8 maximum.

Level IV: Stroke Improvement

Students will improve their skills and increase their endurance by swimming familiar strokes for greater distances. Continue to build the butterfly strokes and be introduced to the breaststroke, elementary backstroke, elements of the sidestroke and basic turns. Student must have passed Level III. Class size: 8 maximum.

Level V: Stroke Refinement

Students continue to refine all the strokes: front and back crawl, butterfly, breaststroke and sidestroke.

Students will increase their distance and be introduced to flip turns. Student must have passed Level IV. Class size: 8 maximum.

Level VI: Lifeguard Readiness

Refine strokes so students swim with more ease, efficiency, power and smoothness over greater distances. Includes skills for lifeguard and personal water safety and practices the prerequisites for the Lifeguard and Water Safety Instructor certification.

Open Swim

Adult Basic Education GED Classes

It’s never too late and you’re never too old to earn your diploma! Adults who are no longer enrolled

in high school are eligible to earn a high school equivalency diploma by passing the GED test. Community Education Adult Basic Ed classes, offered free of charge, can help you prepare for the GED test. If you already have a diploma, Adult Basic Ed classes can help you prepare for college or technical school and brush up reading, math, writing and computer skills. Our schedule will be:

Pre-registration is required for all activities.

The registration deadline is one week prior to the start of the activity. All classes and activities will be filled on a first come, first served basis. Registrations later than one week before the start of the activity will be accepted if space is available. You will be notified if an activity is full or canceled. Registration is not complete until payment is received. You do not need to be a resident of the Foley School District to take part in our CE programs (except for School Readiness and ECFE).

P A RT Y TI M E Host your next birthday party, graduation gathering, reunion or special occasion at Foley Schools. Use of the gymnasiums, swimming pool and outdoor facilities are available at these special rates:

•Gym Party, Foley Elementary Gymnasium Option 1: $50 per hour. Includes Fun Facilitator to lead fun games and necessary equipment for a maximum of 75 people.

Option 2: $35 per hour. Includes building supervisor and necessary equipment for a maximum of 75 people.

•Pool Party, Foley High School Pool Option 1: $65 per hour. Rent the pool. Includes lifeguard, pool accessories, use of locker room and use of tables and chairs outside of pool for a maximum of 30 people.

Option 2: $50 per hour. Rent the pool. Includes lifeguard, pool accessories and use of locker room for a maximum of 30 people.
