Welcome back students! I hope everyone had a wonderful summer filled with fun memories!

Summer was another busy season here in Community Education and I for one can say we have many involved students here in Foley!!

Jill and I have been working hard on the 2016 Fall Community Education Brochure. We hope everyone can find a class in which they are interested in taking. We always ask for community, parent, and student input on classes they would like to see offered. You input is very important to us and we would love to hear what you would like to see offered through Community Education.

If you are interested in teaching a class, I would love to hear about it! We are always looking for new ideas to meet current trends and to provide a variety of offerings to all ages.

Our Annual Youth Expo is a great way to start off the school year! The Youth Expo is an opportunity to find out what activities and programs are available for your family. The Expo will be a FREE, educational and fun event for the whole family! The goal of this event is to showcase all the great opportunities our community has to offer families. There will be around 30 booths attending the expo again and showcasing what they have to offer. We want to give our families every opportunity to choose positive activities that will foster their growth and the continued growth of a healthy community. The Youth Expo will be held Thursday September 15th from 5:30-7:00pm at the fieldhouse. This year’s theme is ‘Celebrate America.’ There will supper available for sale again along with root beer floats! Come and enjoy the fun!

Babysitter Training, Age 11+ Emergency Outfitters

One Act Play, Gr 6-9

This course follows the American Academy of PediatricsBabysitter Lessons and Safety Trainings (BLAST).

Students will learn current practices for safety and injury prevention, first aid basics, feeding and caring for infants, how to handle behavior problems and how to manage their babysitting business. Students will receive a reference book, recipe and game handouts, babysitting bag and first aid kit. Please bring snacks. Class Fee: $57 Mon-Thu • Sep 26-29 • 3:00-5:00pm • FIS Room 305

S.M.A.R.T. Kids, Ages 5-7 Emergency Outfitters Safety Minded And Response Trained Kids is a 4-hour program. Lessons cover basic health and safety, injury prevention, and healthy living. Students construct a first aid kit as part of the class. Class Fee: $26 Thu • Nov 3 • 3:00-6:30pm • FES Room 111

F.A.S.T. Kids, Ages 7-10 Emergency Outfitters First Aid and Safety Trained Kids is a 6-hour course.

Lessons cover basic first aid, water safety, vehicle safety, home emergencies, injury prevention, personal safety and healthy living. This course helps prepare children for staying at home alone. Who needs several acts in a play when just one act will do? Try your theatrical hand at a short but sweet production. The title has yet to be determined but there is sure to be a role perfect for you. Tryouts are the first day and rehearsals begin the second. Information on the performances in early December will be announced at rehearsals. Students will also perform at a competition in Holdingford. Listen for announcements to come in late October about what show we will perform this year.

Grandmasters of Chess, Gr K-5 Youth Enrichment League New and returning students are invited. Join this “sport of the mind” and be part of your school’s chess club. YEL Chess has proven excellence in dozens of schools. Two team state champions, individual state and national champions and gobs of state trophy winners got their start in YEL chess programs. We have 50+ chess lessons for all levels, hundreds of puzzles for all levels and our teachers are among the best in Minnesota. The lessons progress from rudimentary concepts through higherlevel theories. Our activity books are formatted to be accessible to beginners, yet challenge intermediate and advanced students to apply deeper understanding of chess concepts. School of Fish ON ICE, Gr 3-Adult School of Fish ON ICE is a 2 1/2 -hour kids fishing class open to kids (and adults!) from grades 3 and up taught by pro angler and television show host Mike Frisch. Students learn about finding fish under the ice and some great ways to catch them. School of Fish graduates leave class “water ready” equipped with a Shakespeare Fishing rod & reel, tackle box with Northland Tackle, the School of Fish workbook, a KLN Family Brands snack bag, $10 Cabela’s gift card, and much more. Most importantly, however, they have the knowledge to find their own fishing spots, rig their own fishing rigs, and catch fish! One adult may accompany a child at no extra charge, provided they share the equipment pack. We are going to draw one School of Fish ON ICE “graduate” at year end to appear on our award-winning television series which is available on Fox Sports North and a dozen local network affiliates across the Midwest as well. Red Cross WSI (Water Safety Instructor) Course, Ages 16+ Water Safety Instructor (WSI) is a Red Cross certification for swimming and diving instructors. The purpose of the course is to train instructor candidates to teach courses and presentations in the American Red Cross Swimming and Water Safety program by developing their understanding of how to use course materials, how to conduct training sessions, and how to evaluate participants’ progress. Classroom Driver Education, Ages 15+ Roger Eggert A-Z Drivers Instruction from Isle, MN, provides 30 hours of classroom drivers training. The course meets the requirements to obtain a driving permit.

Students must be 15 in order to take the permit test. We encourage taking this class as close when a student will take the permit test as possible.

Attendance at all 30 hours of the class is required.

Adults wishing to get a driving permit are welcome to take this class also. Behind the Wheel instruction can be contracted on an individual basis with A-Z Drivers Instruction. The $20 Community Education fee is due with registration. The $85 fee is due to A-Z Drivers Instruction the first day of class. Teen Driver Safety Parent Awareness Program Roger Eggert Experts on young driver behavior agree that effective parent involvement makes a difference in reducing young driver crashes. This class will: 1.

Increase parent and youth awareness of the most common risks for teen drivers (it may not be what you think!) and Minnesota’s teen driver laws; 2.

Foley Falcon Archery: Beginner, Gr 2+

Girls Basketball, Gr 5-6 Amanda Wojciechowski

This class will help students learn eye dominancy, concentrate on range rules, safety rules and fundamentals of archery, scoring and fun events using the Genesis Bow equipment. All equipment is provided. Class is for archers who DID NOT participated on the Falcon Archery Team this past year. Class Fee: $30

Learn basic basketball skills through skill practice, drills and actual game playing with surrounding schools.

The schedule of Saturday games in late November and early December will be distributed at practice. Jerseys for games are provided. Each student will also receive a t-shirt to keep. Coaches are needed for these teams.

We rely on parents to help and will only have as many teams as coaches. Coaches are given a bag of balls to use during the program and jerseys for their team. Coaches may arrange one evening practice time per week in the fieldhouse. Players will be placed on teams to ensure equity and placement requests are not accepted. Class Fee: $40

Foley Falcon Archery, Gr 2-12 Take your student to the next level in Archery Competition!

We will be competing against other schools in traveling leagues! Using GENESIS BOW EQUIPMENT ONLY, as to follow with NASP State rule guidelines. Open to beginner or advanced students in grades 2-12. This class fee is an as is package fee. The package fee includes the cost of instructors, equipment, maintenance, 6 tournaments AND a shooter t-shirt. Practice: Mon-Thu 5:30-8:00pm, Nov 14-Apr 1. Students are asked to come twice a week, practice time preferences will be taken and a schedule or sign-up sheets made. There will be 6 tournaments included. Other tournaments will be offered to those who wish to attend more, these tournament fees are not included in the Team fee. Evolution Tae Kwon Do challenges youth both physically and mentally to help them achieve their true potential in everyday life. Through training on memory, balance, and coordination in Tae Kwon Do students develop focus, self-confidence, and self-defense. Through setting goals and expectations based on each individual, Tae Kwon Do creates an environment where every participant can achieve success. FHS Production of Into the Woods, Gr 6-12 We want you to be a part of the fall musical, INTO THE WOODS! Auditions will be taking place the FIRST and SECOND days of school. If you are interested in trying out for the musical, please obtain the audition packet from Mrs. Hesch, Mrs. Kivel or Mrs. Darling during Open House. We need people with all sorts of different talents. There’s going to be quite a few song and dance numbers and there are a lot of great parts – big and small!

“Be careful what you wish for” seems to be the ongoing theme in Stephen Sondheim and James Lapine’s Brothers Grimm inspired musical, Into the Woods. The story follows the Baker and his wife who wish to have a child, Cinderella who wishes to go the King’s Festival, and Jack who wishes his cow would give some milk. When the Baker and his wife are visited by the neighborhood witch, who reveals to them that she placed a curse on their family, the two set off on a journey into the woods to reverse the curse. By the end of Act I, everyone has gotten their wish and will seemingly live happily ever after. But in Act II, when Jack’s beanstalk brings them a visit from an angry Giant, we see how the consequences of their actions haunt them in disastrous ways. The community must come together to save each other and their kingdom, but sacrifices must be made.

101 Market No school today….time to have FUN! Join the fun on Thursday October 20th (Thursday of MEA). We are taking our 3rd Annual Trip to the 101 Market in Otsego. Students will get to enjoy the Mustang Corn maze and other activities including a giant corn pit, duck races, petting zoo, pedal cart, potato slinger, and the giant spider web!

Bring a bag lunch and also please bring canned food item to gain entry to jump in the Giant Pumpkin bounce house! If you would like to participate in more activities and visit the concession stand, bring extra money. The bus leaves at 9:30am from the FHS front entrance and arrives back at 3:30pm. Swimming Lessons will be offered again starting in January 2017!

If your child was in summer swimming lessons, we encourage them to attend open swim starting in November to practice what they learned.

Level I: Intro to Water Skills

Students will learn to feel comfortable in the water and to enjoy the water safely. Suggested minimum age 4.

Class size: 6 maximum.

Level II: Fundamental Aquatic Skills

Students explore simultaneous and alternating arm and leg motions on the front and back to lay the foundation for futures strokes. Adds to skills begun in Level I. Student must have passed Level I. Class size: 8 maximum.

Level III: Stroke Development

Students will learn to coordinate the front and back crawl, elements of the butterfly, treading water and rules for head-first entries. Build on the skills of Level II with guided practice. Student must have passed Level II. Class size: 8 maximum.

Level V: Stroke Refinement

Students continue to refine all the strokes: front and back crawl, butterfly, breaststroke and sidestroke. Students will increase their distance and be introduced to flip turns. Student must have passed Level IV. Class size: 8 maximum.

Level VI: Lifeguard Readiness

Refine strokes so students swim with more ease, efficiency, power and smoothness over greater distances.

Includes skills for lifeguard and personal water safety and practices the prerequisites for the Lifeguard and Water Safety Instructor certification. Student must have passed Level V. Class size: 8 maximum.

Swim, float, splash in the Foley High School pool.

Sudden Unexpected Infant Death Syndrome(SUIDS)/Abusive Head Trauma (AHT) Karla Scapanski SUIDS:This class design is based on new MN regulations for childcare providers to teach ways to help prevent accidental death in infants due to SIDS, suffocation and other sleep related death. This class will cover recommendations for creating a safe sleep environment, child care regulations, non-compliance consequences, sleep training requirements for family and center providers and developing a safe sleep policy. AHT: This class design is based on new MN regulations for childcare providers to teach ways to prevent abusive head trauma in infants. This class will describe what pediatric head trauma is, discuss the symptoms and consequences of abusive head trauma, identify risk factors for abusive head trauma and identify strategies to use when stressed, angry or frustrated. Using the facilitator’s book The Single Person’s Guide to Christmas, How to Survive and Even Thrive this Holiday Season, coupled or single people can build a ‘tool kit’ with which to craft a great Christmas. Adults who are no longer enrolled in high school are eligible to earn a high school equivalency diploma by passing the GED test. Community Education Adult Basic Ed classes, offered free of charge, can help you prepare for the GED test.

parenting education GIST: The Essence of Raising LifeReady Kids GIST will give new and valuable insight into the process of how kids mature through their experiences of life, what the authors call a checklist to adulthood.
