Un jour de printemps…

Des sensations troublantes s’entremêlent, L’air vif frissonnant du matin, la douceur naissante du soleil, Le fracas du tonnerre, la sérénité paradisiaque au crépuscule, Et ces tendres pétales aux senteurs enivrantes emportés par la grêle…

La vie renaît, il en est ainsi depuis toujours.

Telles sont nos existences, incertaines, fragiles, Mais comblées de joie et de bonheur à qui sait chérir l’espoir et l’amour.

Johann Sebastian Bach, une vie en musique, une musique pour la vie...

Homme du dix-huitième siècle, il connut un quotidien souvent âpre.

Il composait pour les siens, les guidant pas à pas sur le sentier de la vie, Portés par ce langage musical si exigeant, éblouissant, mais tellement bienveillant.

Sa musique fédérait autour de cet idéal d’espérance, accompagnant les joies et les peines.

Voix de l’âme, la musique est si précieuse…

« Il existe bien peu d’instruments pour lesquels Bach n’ait point écrit. De son temps, il était d’usage de jouer à l’église, pendant la communion, un concerto ou solo sur quelque instrument : il en composa un assez grand nombre en ce genre et les écrivit de manière à les faire servir au perfectionnement de l’artiste qui les exécutait : la plupart sont perdus » J.N. Reconstituer un concerto d’après une sonate pour orgue : un rêve, une folie ?

Prendre la plume et réinventer une musique, J.S. Bach et bien d’autres le faisaient au XVIIIe siècle. Oser approcher le génie du maître allemand reste néanmoins une expérience bouleversante. Ses transcriptions sont en effet des modèles impressionnants. Tout en s’inspirant du style de Bach, il fallait pour ce projet laisser parler l’instinct et choisir les idées musicales spontanément pour retrouver la fraîcheur et la sincérité d’une musique neuve.

Se glisser dans la peau du « compositeur-interprète » permet d’entrer dans l’intimité de l’œuvre. Son mécanisme profond apparaît, rien n’est jamais réellement figé, tout continue d’évoluer perpétuellement et l’on renoue ainsi avec l’essence créative d’une musique du passé.

Au fil des saisons, il fallut écouter, oublier, retrouver, laisser vivre les idées et parfois les laisser mourir, paisiblement. Mais la plus grande joie est de façonner une musique pour ceux qui nous sont proches et de la relier directement à l’émotion. Autant de témoignages qui invitent à vivre la musique autrement.

La sonate pour orgue BWV 530 suit en effet le modèle d’un concerto. La première approche consistait à trouver un équilibre structurel en inventant des Tutti et Soli, sans trahir l’esprit original de l’œuvre. Pour conserver le ton chaleureux de sol majeur, la tessiture de certains passages a ensuite été ajustée. Mais le travail le plus délicat était de créer une partie d’alto de toutes pièces s’intégrant dans ce trio déjà parfait, en prenant naturellement appui sur les idées de Bach. Souvent discrète, la voix d’alto ainsi reconstituée ose néanmoins dialoguer à plusieurs occasions d’égal à égal avec les autres. Dans le premier mouvement c’est son rôle moteur, apprécié par Bach, qui est privilégié, renforçant l’architecture sonore. Mais elle assume également le rôle rhétorique typiquement baroque de « contre partie » en s’opposant parfois aux autres voix. La Sicilienne centrale, écrite sous le masque d’un Lente, est confiée au seul trio, laissant le contrepoint des lignes musicales s’enlacer librement. La simplification des thèmes laisse encore mieux briller la splendide ornementation originelle de Bach interprétée aux reprises. Dans le troisième mouvement, les altos se joignent en canon aux basses pour une chorégraphie en miroir, « à deux couples » : deux violons d’un côté, altos et basses de l’autre.

Hymne à la joie, à la vie, ce concerto imaginaire laisse la place au caractère méditatif de la Sarabande BWV 996 et de la Sinfonia BWV 4, annonçant le récit introspectif de la Sinfonia BWV 12 transcrite ici pour violon et cordes. Cette narration en musique, au fondement de l’esthétique baroque, demeure une forme d’échange privilégié entre le public et l’artiste. Le musicien laisse libre cours à l’expression de ses sentiments et nous raconte sans détour les tourments de son âme. Tantôt emporté par la musique, tantôt porté par l’orchestre, il s’exprime dans ce langage si proche de l’improvisation.

Le concerto pour violon BWV 1041, ainsi introduit, nous révèle alors un autre visage : les mots jaillissent et les instruments dialoguent comme les chœurs d’une cantate, habités par une puissante pensée spirituelle. Les harmonies se teintent de lumières et de couleurs apportant du relief au décor quasi théâtral qui se dessine. Au cœur de ce concerto et du programme, l’Andante nous offre un moment de répit et de grâce, auréolé d’une lumière céleste. La gigue finale - Allegro assai - voit le retour d’obscures et virevoltantes pensées que le soliste cherche à fuir, à éviter.

Apaisés par la Sinfonia BWV 196, nous rencontrons alors les trois personnages qui animeront le dernier concerto. Une divine Trinité, Bach et ses fils ?

Une fois encore, l’agencement singulier des parties concertantes de la version originale laisse imaginer une musique conçue pour des interprètes précis. Ce triple concerto pour violons, transcrit d’après le concerto pour clavecins BWV 1064, nous suggère alors une belle leçon de vie : nous sommes plus forts lorsque nous sommes ensemble. La tonalité rassurante de do majeur, « au centre de l’harmonie », conforte ce message fraternel.

Il était donc judicieux de la conserver. Bien que peu propice à la tessiture du violon, elle permet néanmoins de belles envolées, utilisant les « cordes à vide » dans les arpèges reconstruits pour les solistes. Plus limpide, le mouvement lent conserve son aspect original.

L’emploi des sourdines par l’orchestre renforce néanmoins l’atmosphère rêveuse de cet Adagio au cantabile typiquement italien. Enfin, dans le troisième mouvement, le dernier point d’orgue est recomposé différemment de la cadence du clavecin. Même si cette joyeuse fugue déploie des solos virtuoses et démonstratifs, l’écoute attentive dévoilera un motif musical répétitif en filigrane, fondement de tout ce mouvement, nous rappelant que la vraie signification de toute chose vient souvent du plus profond de nous.

Ensemble Baroque Atlantique Passionnés par la musique et les instruments anciens, les musiciens de l’Ensemble Baroque Atlantique proposent une approche originale des répertoires des XVIIe et XVIIIe siècles, s’inscrivant dans une démarche historique tout en la renouvelant.

Artistes chercheurs et jeunes professionnels, ils renouent avec une pratique vivante en s’inspirant de l’esprit créatif des musiciens de l’époque baroque et choisissent des répertoires dédiés aux instruments d’un ensemble à géométrie variable.

Attaché aux régions atlantiques, l’EBA est attentif aux réalités du territoire, souhaite en valoriser l’action culturelle et pédagogique pour partager sa passion avec un large public.

Afin de porter au mieux l’esprit fraternel qui anime Sinfonie & Concerti, Guillaume Rebinguet Sudre souhaitait créer ce programme avec les musiciens qui ont partagé son quotidien ces dernières années. Qu’ils soient ici chaleureusement remerciés pour leur investissement et leur foi en ce projet.

Guillaume Rebinguet Sudre Inspiré par divers domaines artistiques, Guillaume Rebinguet Sudre a développé une vision musicale singulière. Disciple d’Hélène Schmitt et d’Enrico Gatti au violon baroque, il joue également le clavecin.

Concertiste, il s’attache à restituer une interprétation vivante et spontanée, respectueuse du contexte de création des œuvres et apprécie les projets originaux. Avec Jean Luc Ho et Claire Gratton, il signe en 2012 son premier enregistrement solo dédié aux sonates pour violon de Tomaso Albinoni – CD L’Encelade 1102 – accueilli favorablement par le public et les spécialistes.

Sa passion des instruments anciens s’exprime également dans son activité de facteur de clavecins, initiée par Philippe Humeau et Émile Jobin. Complice du luthier Christian Rault, il conduit des recherches sur les violons anciens en lien avec le répertoire musical.

Avec Aurélien Delage, il est à l’origine du projet de reconstitution d’un orgue Renaissance dans l’Abbaye de Saint-Amant-de-Boixe en Charente.

Partageant le fruit de ses expériences artistiques dans le cadre d’activités pédagogiques, il enseigne le violon baroque, la musique de chambre et assure la direction de l’Orchestre Baroque au Conservatoire de Bordeaux.

Reconstructing a concerto based on an organ sonata - is this a dream or utter madness?

Although picking up a quill and reinventing a particular kind of music is exactly what J.S. Bach and many others were doing back in the 18th century, even so, anyone daring to approach the German master’s genius will find it a deeply moving experience, as his transcriptions are truly impressive models. For this project, although drawing inspiration from Bach’s style, I had to trust my own instincts and choose musical ideas spontaneously with the aim of restoring the freshness and sincerity of a new piece of music.

Slipping into the shoes of the “composer-performer” helped me find my way into the very heart of the work. This revealed its deep underlying mechanism; nothing is ever truly fixed, everything is constantly changing, and this put me back in touch with the creative essence of a piece of music from the past.

As the seasons went by, I had to listen, forget, remember once more and then allow the ideas to live - sometimes I even had to let them die in peace. Even so, there is no greater joy than that found in fashioning a piece of music for the people closest to us and tying it directly to emotion, and these ideas all suggested fresh ways in which the music can be experienced.

Actually, as the organ sonata BWV 530 follows the same model as a concerto, the first thing I did was to find a structural balance, by inventing Tutti and Soli, though without ever betraying the original spirit of the work. Although I then had to adjust the ranges of certain passages to retain the warm key of G major, the trickiest part of the work came when I needed to create an alto part from scratch, making sure that it would fit into this already perfect trio; so the natural thing here was to draw on Bach’s own ideas. Although the alto voice is often rather unassuming, when reconstructed in this way it still plucks up the courage to enter into a dialogue among equals with the other parts. Its driving role - which Bach himself enjoyed – is to the fore in the first movement, strengthening the sonic architecture. However, it also takes on the typically Baroque rhetorical role of the “counterpart” by sometimes contrasting with the other voices. The central Siciliana - written in the guise of a Lente - is left entirely in the hands of the trio, allowing the counterpoint of the musical lines to mingle freely. The simplification of the themes further highlights Bach’s splendid original ornamentation, which is performed during the repeated sections. In the third movement, the altos come together in canon with the basses, producing a mirrored choreography, “with two pairs” - two violins on one side, the altos and basses on the other.

This imaginary concerto is a hymn to joy and to life, but it then gives way to the meditative feel of the Sarabande BWV 996 and the Sinfonia BWV 4, foreshadowing the introspective narrative of the Sinfonia BWV 12, which is transcribed here for violin and strings. This musical narration, based upon the Baroque aesthetic, is still a very special form of dialogue between audience and artist. The musician allows the expression of his feelings to run free and talks directly to us about the torments of his soul. He is carried along by the music at times, and by the orchestra at others, expressing himself in a language which is very close to improvisation.

This introduces the Violin Concerto BWV 1041, which then reveals another facet, as the words burst out and the instruments talk to one another rather like the choruses of a cantata, filled with powerful spiritual thought. The harmonies are tinted with lights and colours which bring relief to the almost theatrical setting which emerges.

The Andante is at the heart both of this concerto and of the programme itself, and offers us a moment of respite and grace, basking in a celestial light. The final gigue - Allegro assai – sees the return of dark, twirling thoughts with the soloist attempting to run away from them.

After being soothed by the Sinfonia BWV 196, we meet the three characters who will be bringing the final concerto to life. A holy trinity - Bach and his sons, perhaps?

Once again, the unusual layout of the concertante parts of the original version suggests music designed for specific performers. This triple concerto for violins, transcribed on the basis of the concerto for harpsichords BWV 1064, suggests a wonderful life lesson, which is that we are stronger when we are together. The reassuring key of C major, “at the heart of harmony�, strengthens this message of brotherly love, so it seemed a good idea to keep it. Although not ideally suited to the range of the violin, it does still allow some fine flights of fancy, using the open strings in the arpeggios reconstructed for soloists.

The slow movement is purer and retains its original feel, although the use of mutes by the orchestra does still heightens the dreamy atmosphere of this Adagio with its typically Italian cantabile. Finally, in the third movement, the last fermata is recomposed differently from the cadenza of the harpsichord. Even though this joyous fugue uses virtuoso demonstrative solos, careful listening will reveal a repeating musical leitmotiv, which is the basis for this whole movement, reminding us that the true meanings of things come often from deep within ourselves.

Ensemble Baroque Atlantique The musicians who make up the Ensemble Baroque Atlantique are passionate about music and period instruments, offering an original approach to the 17th and 18th century repertoires which remain part of a historical process whilst at the same time revitalising it.

These young professionals, all of whom are artists with a real thirst for knowledge, are going back to the performance of music as a living thing, drawing inspiration from the creative spirit of musicians of the Baroque period and choosing repertoires written specially for the instruments of a geometrically variable ensemble.

The EBA is deeply rooted in the Atlantic regions of France, and its members pay close attention to what is going on locally, aiming to make the most of any cultural and educational initiatives to help them to bring their passion to a wide audience.

Guillaume Rebinguet Sudre set out to create this programme with the aim of putting across the brotherly spirit behind Sinfonie & Concerti, working with the musicians who have been part of his everyday life over the last few years. We would like to offer them our warmest thanks for their commitment to and faith in this project.

Guillaume Rebinguet Sudre Guillaume Rebinguet Sudre is inspired by many different fields of artistic endeavour and has developed an unusual musical vision all of his own. He is a disciple of Hélène Schmitt and Enrico Gatti on the Baroque violin, and also plays the harpsichord.

As a concert performer he sets out to give living, spontaneous performances respeting the contexts within which the works were created. He also has a real relish for unusual projects. Together with Jean Luc Ho and Claire Gratton, he made his debut solo recording of the violin sonatas of Tomaso Albinoni in 2012 – L’Encelade CD 1102 – which proved popular with both the public and specialists.

His passion for period instruments also finds an outlet in his work as a harpsichord maker, to which he was introduced by Philippe Humeau and Émile Jobin. He works closely with the violin maker Christian Rault and has headed up research into period violins in relation to the musical repertoire.

Working with Aurélien Delage, he embarked on the project to reconstruct a Renaissance organ at the Abbaye de Saint-Amant-de-Boixe in the Charente region.

He also shares what he has learned from artistic experience in his educational activities, teaching Baroque violin and chamber music, as well as conducting the Orchestre Baroque at the Conservatoire de Bordeaux.
