My names is Pat Indo, I’m a professional mural artist based in Crescent Head. I paint massive murals for councils, commercial businesses, small traders, government organisations, schools, and community groups in New South Wales and Queensland.
You have successfully cultivated your own artistry with a host of inspiring mural artworks, collaborations and commissions. What are you currently working on?

My alter ego is INDO who’s a graffiti pop street artist, stencil artist. He’s pretty cool and gets commissioned by brands and companies to make things cooler and more commercially appealing. INDO’s won awards for live street art, performed for Redbull, ING Direct Bank, Fuel TV, Sony BMG and The Royal Women's Hospital. He’s collaborated with some big brands, been a guest speaker at VIVID, been nominated Australian of the Year in Northern NSW and sold his street art through galleries and auction houses,
I’d love to share some of the past projects and current projects I’m working on. Through Instagram, I was able to secure a commission artwork painting, Scott Storch portrait. He produced the iconic song Still D.R.E., also played with the roots and composed other inspirational pop music. Continued over...
In the Macleay Valley, it has always been a dream of mine to transform Kempsey into a creative, mural town. We had the gift of collaborating with Council and thanks to Olivia Parker, Nick Warfeld and Aisha Spokes, we started transforming the laneways in this small country town. I was selected to paint three murals in this project, located opposite Coles, “Farmer” and the flower artwork and the girl holding umbrella in Savages Lane and the flood pole in Kempsey CBD.
I’m currently working with Port Macquarie Hastings Council to paint the new Kendall skatepark which starts in a couple of weeks. It’s going to transform the space in a positive and inspiring way. I have also helped Samaritans Women's Refuge transform their accommodation wall, and also thanks to David Grey we transformed The Med Hotel into a creative elegant retro style hotel, painting flamingos and iconic art, inspired by Palm Springs America.

I’m also painting art for a mural festival coming up in Queensland, and I’m looking forward to launching my official website where I'll be selling original artworks, prints and cool merchandise, which is always exciting. You can follow me on instagram to get more details at @ indotheartist
Your work shows a futuristic and playful edge to it almost questioning the status quo. Is it important for you as an artist to
push the boundaries into what’s possible in your work?
I’ve never been a follower of the rules, I’m talking about man made rules, not humanity rules that benefit living creatures and the Earth. Art is a voice for the people, a licence to speak truth, even if people are not ready to hear it. We hang out with the elephant in the room and to enter that room, it takes a lot of heart and courage to read between the lines and express the message in a clear style that’s aesthetically pleasing and cuts deep.
I’ve worked with ING Direct Bank, designing we transformed e Med Hotel into a creative elegant retro style hotel, painting flamingos and iconic art, inspired by Palm Springs America.
Can you tell us about some of the design collaborations you have been a part of and some of your highlights across your career to date?
an interactive live art space where people had their faces photographed and transformed into stencils. We gave them a can of acrylic paint and they were allowed to ‘art’ on a designated temporary wall. We did this in Martin Place, Sydney and Melbourne CBD.
Working with councils in Australia and overseas has been interesting as well as working with Vegemite, Monkey Shoulder Whiskey, Sound Cloud and Rolling Stone Magazine which was very exciting too. They basically asked me to make this look cool and appealing - what a gift to be given the freedom to do what you love!
Workshops too have had an impact. I love working with like minded teens and kids, inspiring them to believe in themselves through art as well as helping Aboriginal youth and kids from challenging backgrounds which is very rewarding on a soul level.
You are headlining ‘Artwalk’ 2024 in Port Macquarie on Friday, June 7th, and this year’s theme is ‘Coastal Nights.’ Tell us a little about your involvement and as an artist what does the creative experience mean to you?
This is going to be an excellent night! I’m
working with iconic restaurant Two Triple Four. I’ll be creating a massive crate-man sculpture called ‘Father and Son,’ using milk crates. The sculpture will light up, and be there as a testament to all the inspiring fathers out there changing the world through compassion, patience and love. “It’s ok to be vulnerable and show your feelings. We’re all human. True weakness is struggling without asking for help”.
Also I’ll be painting some live art using spray cans and stencils. I heard people love to buy art, so I’ll be taking down some original artworks for sale, 30mmx 40mm starting from $500. There will be great food as always at the restaurant, and I look forward to meeting people at the event.
How has the process been working with Port Macquarie Hastings Council bringing the event to the community?
Easy, like Sunday morning. I have enormous appreciation for Sam Hawkins who’s been absolutely amazing to work with - supportive and the heart beat of this event. So thank you young lady for your passion and skills in making this annual event a reality for the community. It’s only getting bigger and better!
What are your visions for your brand for the future?
Currently, I’m in the process of launching my website to offer my artworks directly to collectors and art enthusiasts. Additionally, I am actively engaging in collaborative projects, such as painting street art commissions, to further expand my artistic reach and impact.
In the near future, I aspire to establish my own clothing brand, merging art and fashion to create unique and expressive pieces. Furthermore, I am keen on cultivating partnerships with local businesses to create captivating murals that not only enhance their spaces but also contribute to their commercial success and customer loyalty through the transformative power of art.
As my artistic journey unfolds, I am honoured to have opportunities to participate in prominent mural festivals worldwide, enriching diverse communities with my creative vision. Moreover, I am excited to venture into the realm of art competitions across Australia this year, seeking to showcase my talent and connect with fellow artists on a national platform.

In an alternate 2011, the Mental Parity Movement has seized control over all American institutions and now, what started as a fringe belief amongst radical academics, has become the new sacred truth: there is no such thing as variable human intelligence. Emory takes the hardline view while Pearson thinks the whole thing is ludicrous, fracturing their life-long relationship. The story is at times hilarious, deadpan and somewhat too close to the bone as it threads through the intricacies of ‘the last great civil rights fight’.

Verity Woods is a local photographer who captures some of her clients most special and life altering moments with feeling and authenticity. It is obvious how much she loves her job and she manages to put her own unique style into every shoot she works on.
Hi Verity. Can you tell us about your start in photography and what made you want to pursue it as a profession?
I generally answer this question by saying I started photography 13 years ago in Port Macquarie, which is true, but my passion for photography started well before that. Growing up in my country town of Orange, I was constantly styling up my friends and making them pose for photos, trying desperately to make us look like the people in the movies, that’s where it all started . I have always journalled my life, when I was younger it was with a pen and paper in a diary, and now I document everything via photos! This is our story, I want to remember every last bit of it.
But professionally speaking 13 years ago after the birth of my daughter, I picked up a camera and started shooting and never
looked back.
I love documenting life, capturing tangible reminders of moments that are rarely, if ever, repeatable.
How would you describe your style and what are some of your favourite types of shoots?
My passion projects are styling up my clients and photographing them in places that remind me of those endless summers spent along the coast holidaying as children.
My style I would describe as being emotive, warm, fun and romantic.
My favourite shoots are every shoot; however my passion projects are styling up my clients and photographing them in places that remind me of those endless summers spent along the coast holidaying as children. Caravans, old hotels, vintage cars, skate parks, surfboard stores, or anything that catches my eye where I can create a nostalgic moment of childhood summers past. We live in a beautiful part of Australia where
surf culture extends through the generations, so inspiration is constantly all around me . Are there any other photographers or artists that you feel particularly inspired by?
I am forever inspired by Australian photographers, ones that photograph, the messy but beautiful, the windswept hair, sand covered toddler hands, the sundrenched beach days, the photographs where no one is looking but everything is captured. Those are the images that cannot be replicated, but are a beautiful reminder to look for moments between the poses, because that’s where the magic is.

You often shoot outdoors. Do you have any favourite locations you’ve discovered so far?
90% of my sessions are taken outside, and I work every week of the year, that’s how beautiful our climate is! I am beyond spoilt for location choices, from the stunning green hills of Comboyne, to the long stretches of our local beaches, the coastal bush tracks to the river, we have it all!
Most challenging thing is the weather!
My favourite locations are my clients’ homes, the places they love, that nobody else knows about. I never know what I’m showing up to, and I love the challenge of finding the perfect light and using what’s around me in the moment to get the shot. What do you find most challenging and most rewarding about being a

photographer?
The most challengingthe weather! We have had it all: floods, fires and droughts. It’s being able to shoot even when the sky has other plans.
And most rewarding, where do I even start?
There is not one shoot where I am not there to celebrate something in someone’s life.
Who gets to say that every day they get to show up in people’s lives at their happiest moments?
From pregnancy to birth, proposals, family gatherings, elopements and even the heartbreaking times when I’ve been invited to document a loved one who is unwell, I’m still there to celebrate them, their life, in a room of people who love them. I really am constantly surrounded by
the love stories of life, and I get to do that as my job!
I still photograph clients I met 13 years ago. To be able to watch their families grow, their lives evolve, and to be able to photograph that time and time again is pretty special. I have
the best clients in the world, big call, but I’m calling it.
Can you tell us a bit about your process, what sort of preparation and post production goes into a photography job?
Nothing means more to a photographer than seeing you display your photographs on your wall! at is the best thank you your photographer can ever receive.
My main goal is to make every person that stands in front of my camera feel comfortable and confident, and to make it a personal experience for them. You are sharing your babies with me, the people you love the most, and I take that seriously.
We have so much fun at our sessions (even the dads) trying to make it as playful and as fun as possible.
I then spend late nights editing (whilst watching reality TV), and then the images are chosen by my clients, printed and sent home. Nothing means more to a photographer than seeing you display your photographs on your wall! That is the best thank you your photographer can ever receive.
What is your favourite subject to photograph when you’re just shooting for fun?
My favourite subject to photograph is maternity and newborn, that’s where I specialise.
But it all comes down to capturing joy. When you see it and you can manage to capture it in a photograph ….it’s like catching lightning in a bottle.
Do you have any goals or aspirations for your work as a photographer moving forward?
My goal is to continue to love what I do. Seems silly but when we forget why we do something, we can lose our love for it. I would hate to ever pick up my camera and feel obligation over passion.
Oh, and I’d also love to have a full circle moment where I can photograph my first newborn I ever photographed, holding her first newborn, that would be pretty special. Where can we view some of your work or get in touch?
You can find me mainly over on Instagram at verity woods photography
I’m also on Facebook at verity woods photography maternity and newborn Thanks Verity.
As I sit here, having just finished preparing our Family in Business feature in this month’s edition, it got me thinking… does everyone really know where the journey of Lusanna and Ant from Meg + Me started, and how we got where we are today? Probably not.
So, let’s take a little trip down memory lane together this month. Our story goes all the way back to 2010, when we first hit Port Macquarie, fresh faced and full of anticipation for what I expected would be a 12 month “reset” before returning home to Hobart.
Famous last words. The minute we arrived in Port Macquarie I could see Ant beginning to grow roots here. It wasn’t long before I realised that this temporary sea-change, was going to become permanent, so it was time to find employment! Ant being Ant found himself employed within 15 minutes of arriving in town… as a barista.
Although never having an official background in coffee, his exceptional personal skills and unparalleled passion landed him a job with the Holy Goat Team, in the newly established Holy Goat Coffee Lounge at the Private Hospital. Winning the hearts of patients, staff, visitors and his employers, it was clear that Ant had found his next vocation.
All the while, I was still finding my feet. It’s fair to say the transition from Hobart to Port was far more difficult for me than it was for Ant. My background in tourism, accounting and real estate just didn’t seem the right fit here and in my mind I wasn’t staying… so I was happy to find a temporary position, which landed me in retail. This was my first ever retail
sales position and I can honestly say I didn’t love it! I didn’t enjoy the pressure that is all too often associated with sales positions, targets, KPI’s you name it, it just wasn’t me.
After a few false starts in other industries, I really needed to find something, so back to retail and I reached out to the then owner of Meg + Me to see if she had any casual positions available.
Sitting there chatting over coffee, thinking I was going quite well with my interview, I was surprised at what I heard next; let’s just say after this conversation I went home to Ant and said: “Well, I didn’t get the job… but I think I am going to buy the business!” Now Ant is used to me spinning curve balls and pushing boundaries, and to his credit he always throws his full support behind a good idea. So there we have it, in July 2012, we became the proud owners of Meg + Me.
somehow things work out. It may take time, persistence, creative thinking, sweat and lots of tears (mine not Ant’s), but it always works out.
Now owning a small business can be tough. It presents so many challenges, many of which you never anticipate you will have to deal with.
Over the years our motto has always been “small steps, with the future in mind”. In practice, this means we never over extend ourselves by taking on too much unnecessary risk, but we always have the big picture in mind and adjust and pivot as necessary. This “business plan” has served us well, as we quickly outgrew the original location of the business, and had the opportunity to add Ant and his espresso bar into the business in 2014. After working hard for many years to establish a good solid reputation, we took another calculated risk and opened our Gift + Homewares space in 2021.
Now owning a small business can be tough. It presents so many challenges, many of which you never anticipate you will have to deal with. But as I covered in our Family in Business feature, when you are in it together you support each other through it all and
Fast forward to today, we now proudly sit amongst many other iconic locally owned businesses, surrounded by an exceptionally supportive community that we are grateful to now call our own.
It’s true small business ownership is a journey, but we wouldn’t have it any other way…
Jenna Goodfellow is a local teacher who was inspired to enter the Wauchope Show Young Woman competition this year to demonstrate to her students the values that this event encourages. Jenna was named this year’s winner and has shown her students and the community as a whole that if you enjoy something, commit to it and give it your all, you can achieve your goals!
Hi Jenna. When did you first become aware of the Wauchope Show Young Woman competition?
I first learned about the Wauchope Show Young Woman competition through local social channels. While I had initially considered entering, it wasn’t until I came across it in my school’s weekly newsletter that I decided to take action. As a local teacher, seeing it in the newsletter reminded me of the importance of being a role model for my students and the broader school community. That reminder prompted me to step up and enter the competition.
Could you explain to us what the competition is all about and how it’s run?
Certainly. The competition serves as a platform to highlight and celebrate the achievements of young women in our local community. It’s about finding a representative who can
effectively advocate for our community’s interests and values. By participating, these young women have the chance to address local issues and inspire others to engage with the show. Entrants are encouraged to demonstrate their suitability as ambassadors for their community, showing a strong passion for our local show and an understanding of rural matters in NSW. Applicants fit into either the junior or senior category based on their age, and anybody who applies is automatically a finalist. It is about a 5-week process and there are a number of events held during this time in the lead up to the announcing and awarding of the winners at the Wauchope Show.
What made you decide to enter this year?
This year, I embarked on a new journey as a teacher at a local high school. Teaching and the education of young people has always been my passion, and I’m truly committed to making a meaningful impact on the lives
of young adults. I strongly believe in the pivotal role educators play in shaping the future of our youth. The decision to enter the competition stemmed from my desire to use this platform to create positive change within our community. Through my involvement in the show and the competition, I’ve forged connections with my students that have already begun to foster a positive environment in my classroom. I see immense potential for these connections to extend beyond the classroom and make a broader impact.
What was the experience like in the lead up and how did you prepare?
The lead-up to the competition was definitely a rollercoaster of emotions. Stepping outside my comfort zone was both daunting and exciting. To prepare myself, I dedicated significant time to practicing interview questions. Staying on top of local current affairs and actively engaging with the local community were also crucial aspects of my
preparation. Getting out and about and speaking with people in the community also allowed me to gain valuable insights into the concerns and interests of the area, ultimately helping me feel more connected and prepared for the competition.
What were some of the events like and how did you feel about putting yourself out there alongside the other young women?
Among the various events, the formal interview and dinner night stood out as my favourites. Sitting in front of a panel for an interview isn’t something many people my age have done often, so it was an invaluable opportunity to refine this skill. The judges provided a platform for me to share my passions and personal journey leading up to the competition, allowing me to articulate why I hoped to be an ambassador for my community. The formal dinner, held on the same day as the interview, was more of a social occasion. It offered a chance to connect with the judges on a more personal level, learning about their own stories and contributions to the community, as well as improving my public speaking skills. Moreover, it provided an opportunity to bond with the other participants. Since the competition values personality, confidence, and ambition among other qualities, these events allowed me to showcase these aspects of myself most effectively.
Through my involvement in the Show and the competition, I’ve forged connections with my students that have already begun to foster a positive environment in my classroom.
representative is an immense honour and I feel very privileged to have been given this opportunity.
What will some of your duties be over the year as the 2024 winner?
How did it feel to hear you had been named the Wauchope Show Young Woman for 2024?
I was absolutely thrilled! Hearing that I had been named the Wauchope Show Young Woman for 2024 was incredibly exciting. It’s such a fantastic opportunity to represent my community in this capacity, and I feel truly honoured. Being a Wauchope local myself, I’ve always admired the showgirls who came before me, so to be chosen as this years
As the 2024 winner, I’ll have the privilege of representing both the Show Society and our community at various events throughout the year. These engagements range from informal gatherings to more official functions – anything from public speaking to presenting prizes at local agricultural events. As well, I’m excited about the chance to immerse myself in our community, getting to know its diverse members and participating in local events. Recently, I had the honour of marching in the Wauchope ANZAC Day March on behalf of the Wauchope Show Society, and witnessing the turnout from our incredible community was truly inspiring.
What have you learnt from this experience?
This experience has taught me a valuable lesson: that with determination, you truly can achieve anything you set your mind to. It might sound like a cliché, but going through this journey has reinforced the truth behind those words. It’s a message I’m eager to share with the young people in my classrooms, to inspire them to pursue their dreams with confidence. As well, I’ve gained a newfound appreciation for the rich history of the Wauchope Show. Learning about its legacy has been fascinating, and I’m excited to see how both the Show and this competition evolve in the future.
What would you say to any other young women thinking of doing something like this?
I would say if I can do it, you can do it! And remember, a smile goes a long way! Our community, especially the Wauchope Show and this competition, thrive on the energy and enthusiasm of passionate, resilient, and inspiring young women. Don’t hesitate to step forward and make a positive difference.
Thanks Jenna.
The Rotary Club of Port Macquarie West came up with a plan to start their Winter Woolies Drive in 2022, collecting donations of handmade kni ed and crocheted items along with blankets and anything that would assist people doing it tough or sleeping rough to stay warm in winter. The drive has since grown, and we spoke to Co-President Keiren Freeman about their goals for this year.
Can you share with us the inspiration behind what led the Rotary Club to initiate the Winter Woolies Drive last year?
Winter Woolies started because one of our Rotarians woke up one morning and felt cold even though she lives in a house, has warm clothes and could switch on heating. She thought, ‘what about those in our community who don’t have those options’. The concept of Winter Woolies was presented to the members at a Rotary Club meeting, it was supported and so began. How has it evolved since its launch 12 months ago?
Winter Woolies started in May 2022 and the number of organisations we donate to has increased, and the number of people who donate has also increased. There has also been an increase in fabulous creative ladies who each Monday join Sam’s Natty Knitters at Port Macquarie Golf Club, and they put their heart and soul into each and every creation.
Could you tell us more about the collaboration with “Sam’s Natty Knitters” and how this partnership came about.
One of our members, Julie Constable said she knew a group of ladies who loved to knit. She asked if they had any items they’d like to donate to a new program called the “Winter Woolies’’ which would donate handmade knitted and crocheted woollen items to people who were homeless and/or sleeping rough or needed warmth. It started with beanies and scarves and expanded to booties, bed socks, blankets, gloves, baby and toddler clothing and even a christening set. Sam’s Natty Knitters was started by Sam Openshaw, a magnificent community ambassador for mental health support programs in the local area and brings like
minded ladies together for a great afternoon of coffee, (maybe something stronger) sharing of patterns and a good old natter with a friend. I am a Regional Home Assessor for Aspire4Life under the My Aged Care contract and have been promoting Sam’s Natty Knitters as a social outlet for ladies when they are new to the area or feeling lonely and looking for a great social outlet.
There has also been an increase in fabulous, creative ladies who each Monday join Sam’s Na y Kni ers at Port Macquarie Golf Club...
The Winter Woolies Drive seems to have a significant impact on various organisations and individuals in need. Who do donations get passed on to?
Organisations who have received Winter Woolies since 2022 include Endeavour Clubhouse, YPS Port Macq and Kempsey, Liberty Specialist Services, Headspace, Sista Connections – Hastings Secondary College, Community Housing
Limited, TAFE PM, Birpai LALC and the Port Macquarie Hastings Homelessness Collective which operates as “Our Place”.
Can you elaborate on the process of distributing the donations and how it directly benefits the community?
The items are sorted, dropped off to the organisations and we stay in touch with them and find out when they need more items delivered during winter.
What kind of response have you received from the community regarding the Winter Woolies Drive?
The response is always positive from those who donate their winter woolies. We don’t always meet the people who take items home, but the feedback is always “thank you” and what a fabulous idea it is.
Have there been any stories or moments that stand out to you?
We support many programs like environmental recycling and have collected over 1.5 million bo les and cans, with proceeds being invested back in to the community.
The response to the initial deliveries indicated we were on to something good and positive for the community. A gentleman took home 2 blankets and returned the next day to say it had been the first time in years he was warm when he went to bed because he didn’t have
to layer his clothes over himself to try and get warm. A woman donated dolls which she had knitted clothes for and she asked they be donated to children who had no toys. We were also able to donate a large amount of baby items to a young parents program (YPSpace), however, there was concern that the young parents wouldn’t “like” the knitted goods. The Program Coordinator came back the next week and said most of the young parents had never seen homemade knitted baby clothes and couldn’t wait to see if there was more to come. Beanies and blankets are also being given to people who are living in transitional accommodation i.e. local motels. They usually arrive with nothing, so a handmade beanie and blanket to keep is always greatly appreciated.
In what way do you hope the Winter Woolies Drive will continue to grow and make a difference in the future?
Unfortunately, with the cost of living rising people need to choose food and rent over buying beanies, scarves and blankets. “Eat or Heat?” is sadly a question being posed way too often. The donation of a winter wooly to someone who is experiencing the cold is a simple exchange
community. No words are exchanged, but everyone is grateful for the opportunity to give or receive.
As Co-President of the Rotary Club of Port Macquarie West, how does this initiative align with the club’s broader mission and values?
Rotary’s motto is “Service Above Self”. Our club is not the largest club in the community, nor do we have the largest fundraising capacity, however we do have big hearts and good intentions. We support many programs like environmental recycling and have collected over 1.5 million bottles and cans, with proceeds being invested back in to the community. We have previously had a large focus on supporting people with a disability with the establishment of Port Macquarie Sailability and a community transport service assisting people with a disability attend work and or training. It’s important we keep engaged with the community otherwise we lose focus of a “Community service organisation”.
Lastly, for those interested in supporting the Winter Woolies Drive, how can they get involved?
Donations can be left at Leslie Williams’ office at the Sovereign Hills business complex, contact us via our FB page, or email us at rotarypmqwest@gmail.com
Ali is the community fundraising co-ordinator for Stars of Hastings this year. Based out of Newcastle she is very happy to have been calling Port Macquarie her home away from home for the past few months and consulting with Focus Magazine for the who’s who; it has been integral in her introduction to our beautiful community.
Hi Ali, how did you become involved with the Cancer Council, and what motivated you to take on this role?
In addition to personally hosting fundraisers for Cancer Council over the years, in 2022 I was invited to speak at a Stars of Newcastle event about my relationship with cancer, my contribution to the community through small business and my dedication to paying it forward to people living with cancer through random acts of kindness. This little appearance earnt me a nomination to take the stage as a star in 2023 which I of course said yes to, although I had absolutely no dance experience. While I was hosting my fundraising events and learning to salsa I came to the realisation that my businesses may not make it out the other side of the pandemic. I started looking for marketing and events roles in the ‘not for profit’ space which I thought was a unicorn, until I discovered Cancer Council NSW were looking for someone to step in to their community fundraising role in Newcastle and of course I applied.
It was my dream job! As someone who is passionate about creativity, connection,
collaboration and community, the role has allowed me to do all of those things while working towards a cancer free future. This year I was fortunate to be presented with the opportunity to lead on Stars of the Hastings and help showcase the amazing support the Hastings community has for Cancer Council, and for people living with cancer and their families. What role do you see community
engagement playing in the challenges faced by people living with cancer, and how has the Dance for Cancer program strengthened community involvement?
The dollars we raise in campaigns like Dance for Cancer are fundamental in the work we do, and this is not possible without strong community engagement. The valuable opportunities for Cancer Council NSW to connect with the community through our
Stars and let them know we are here for them and their loved ones through all stages of the cancer journey is imperative. These respected leaders and personalities are providing us with the platform to showcase to the people of Hastings the impact Cancer Council can have with their fundraising, ranging from direct investment into cancer research, advocacy and prevention, to providing information and support to people living with cancer and their families. How does the Dance for Cancer program contribute to the Cancer Council’s mission?
Every day Cancer Council NSW works to reduce cancer risk through prevention and early intervention, improve cancer detection and survival through world-class research, enhance the quality of life of people affected by cancer through information and support and improve cancer outcomes through bold advocacy. We are 94% community funded so we are only able to do that work through campaigns like Dance for Cancer and the people in the community who work with us to achieve our mission. Since 2020 Stars of Hastings has contributed more than $500,000 to that work.
What have you enjoyed the most being in the new role and working with the local business people for this years Hastings Dance for Cancer?
The Hastings community is very much like the Newcastle community I am familiar with. It has been a pleasure discovering the people of Port Macquarie and surrounds, the thriving small businesses and the stories of those that call the Mid North Coast home and knowing we can make a difference in the lives of those living in Hastings. I set out to recruit 10 stars from 10 totally different fields to expand on the reach we have been able to achieve through Stars of Hastings but it has been very important to me to also build on the relationships that already existed. I love that we have past stars like Alistair Flower coming back as a major sponsor with Birdrock Bar & Grill and Emma
from Plum Studio and Willow of Brows by Willow who will return to work their magic backstage this year instead of front and centre as they did in 2022. We have also developed some wonderful relationships with our media partners Southern Cross Austereo this year which we hope to see continue over the years. Our stars have of course been the highlight; each dedicated to their day jobs and small businesses and not afraid of hard work which is evident through their commitment to this campaign and the effort they have put in to their fundraising events and the performances they will treat us to on Friday 28th June at Panthers. Combined with the support of their fabulous dance partners, our Class of 2024 are a force, and I am so excited to see what they achieve together.
a cancer free future but doesn’t know where to start?
There are lots of ways to get involved; you can nominate someone to take the stage next year, make yourself familiar with our 13 11 20 cancer information and support phone line and share it with someone you know. A staggering 1 in 2 people will be affected by cancer by the age of 85. You can always donate online or ‘Do It For Cancer’ with your own fundraising event. If your business would like to make a contribution reach out and see how we can work together or, you might consider leaving a gift to Cancer Council NSW in your will. What are your goals for this event?
We are 94% community funded so we are only able to do that work through campaigns like Dance for Cancer and the people in the community who work with us to achieve our mission. Since 2020 Stars of Hastings has contributed more than $500,000 to that work.
Tell us about the night and how our readers can support this event?
If your readers have a ticket they are in for a treat. If they don’t yet I would recommend snapping one up before we sell out. Tickets include a 2 course meal, and an entertainment filled evening hosted by Mid North Coast’s Strawny, music by Jackson James, guest speakers, a grand judging panel, live auctions and, of course, the greatest show on earth featuring our 10 stars and their dance partners. If they can’t make the main event, each of our stars are out and about in the community hosting their own fundraising events so they can secure tickets to one of those or donate through the website. What advice would you give to someone who wants to contribute to
Our goal is to raise $100k but of course we want to top last years incredible $155k fundraising effort, and I think we will. The Class of 2024 are well on their way to smashing our original goal. Looking ahead, what are your hopes for the future of cancer advocacy and support in your community and beyond?
Every year in NSW alone over 53,000 people will hear the words “you have cancer” and every day we offer support to those families, speak out on behalf of our community and find new and better ways to detect and treat cancer. While Cancer Council are leading the way towards a cancer free future and protecting life’s precious moments for life, the more opportunities we have to let people know how we can help them and how working with us can make a difference, the more impact we are able to make together, because it takes all of us.
Thanks Ali.

Reason you are dancing? To raise funds for a great cause and put myself totally out of my comfort zone in a show of support.
What you are learning about yourself? To laugh at myself more, I’ve learnt that I can have fun doing something that I am not comfortable with. In the beginning I figured maybe I could just show up on stage for three minutes get through it and move on with life! The respect I have gained for both my instructor and dance partner as well as their passion for dance has meant I cannot just show up... watch out fellow contestants!
What you are looking forward to the most? I’m sure the big event is going to be a great night, and whilst I appreciate the journey, I am really looking forward to the end destination at Panthers on the 28th of June!

Reason you are dancing? Honouring loved ones, my husband’s Mum Sue passed away from cancer, the fact I’m supporting a good cause, raising awareness and for personal fulfillment, a sense of purpose in giving back.
What you are learning about yourself? I’ve discovered that I have a natural ability to rally others around a cause and inspire action within our community. I’ve learnt that this requires a degree of resilience and determination, especially as I’m stepping outside of my comfort zone to participate, organising a fundraising event, and meeting loads of new people asking for donations etc.
What you are looking forward to the most? The Star of the Hastings Cancer Council charity dance on 28th June at Panthers Port Macquarie. It should be an entertaining show. Make sure you get your tickets.
How can our readers donate to you? I recently hosted a Cocktail Degustation Fundraiser at Hello Sailor where we raised over $7,500 for the Cancer Council. For anyone interested in donating, log onto our Star of Hastings website, find me and hit the donate button.
Reason for dancing? Over the last couple of years cancer has affected some amazing people in my life Angus, Ella, Tracey, and my best friend’s Dad, Ross who just recently passed away. I think to myself if they can go though this horrendous disease and still face each day as it comes, well I can be brave and bust out the moves on the dance floor. I’m sure I will make a complete fool of myself but I’m up for the challenge. What are you learning about yourself That I still can not dance, but I love a challenge and I’m not one to give up, so stay tuned.
What am I looking forward to seeing? Everyone in the Stars group give it there all. We have supported each other from day one and have become a really tight knit group, (not many people can say that when doing something like this), we all get along fantastically and have lots of laughs. I just want everyone to have the best time, be brave and bold and have fun.
Thank you everyone for your support x
How can people donate? My Winter Wonderland event is being held on 15th June at Flynn’s Beach Surf Club. Ticrkets are on sale though Soulsister Grazing Facebook page or people can call me on 0455 106 370 to donate to my raffle and silent auction.
Reason you are dancing? I am dancing for my Grandma who passed away of cancer in 2016. She always loved watching me dance growing up so I know she would be proud of me doing this in her legacy.
What you are learning about yourself? I am learning so much about myself! I dabbled in dance growing up so I thought it would be like riding a bike and I’d jump back into it but it’s a lot harder than I anticipated! My incredible dance partner Danika has me getting better every week though h which is great!
What are you looking forward to the most? I am really looking forward to the show night! Its going to be so much fun seeing everyone’s performances come together and shine on stage! Reason you are dancing? Stars of the Hastings seemed like such an incredible opportunity to step out of my comfort zone and rediscover my love of dance- all for an incredible cause. My grandmother has recently been rediagnosed with breast cancer and my partner has also had both parents go through it so I’m dancing with them in mind, knowing how important it is to keep working towards better treatment options and prevention. Through my work as a reporter I’ve also come to learn how amazing and necessary support programs are for families going through it in their most vulnerable time- so I feel it’s a privilege to help the cancer council in whatever way I can.
What you are learning about yourself? I’m re-learning how incredibly fit dancers are and how much work and talent goes into making something look effortless!
Reason you are dancing? I'm dancing to support cancer research, treatment, and support services for those in our local community . Cancer has touched my life in profound ways, having lost my aunt to this relentless disease a fews years ago and supporting my closest friend through her battle with diffuse large B-cell lymphoma. Thankfully, my friend is now cancer-free, but the journey has shown me the importance of continued efforts in fighting cancer.
What you are learning about yourself? I'm learning that dancing isn't my strong suit! But even though I might not be a natural dancer, I'm determined to give it my best shot, enjoy the process, and most importantly, raise funds for a cause that's close to my heart.
What you are looking forward to the most? I’m looking forward to everyone coming together on the night to cheer each other on and finally seeing the other routines!
How can our readers donate to you? I am hosting a live music event on the 23rd of June so stay posted for that- otherwise donations are very welcome through my fundraising page!
What you are looking forward to the most? I'm looking forward to having a fantastic time with my dance teacher, Sarah from Burlesqfit, and the other Stars. The event will be a fun way to raise awareness and funds for cancer research, and I'm excited to be part of such an energetic and supportive community.

What you are learning about yourself? That I definitely can’t move the way I used to and I definitely am not a public speaker, but, I’m loving the inspiration and motivation this cause keeps giving me.
What you are looking forward to the most? I can’t wait to get back on the stage. I know a lot of people are nervous about it, but the feeling you get once you’re up there, people don’t understand until it’s you!

But ultimately – I had to say YES when asked…as I consulted my crystal pendulum, tarot cards and oracles and every answer was to step up and say YES!
What you are learning about yourself? I’m learning to maintain my philosophy of ‘Staying in the Now’. Keep present on each day and not worry about the showcase or getting on stage until I need to. Until it presents. Trying to

Bethany Aged Care Centre, run by The Salvation Army Aged Care (TSAAC), celebrates 40 years of providing aged care to older Australians in Port Macquarie this month. With the ever-changing tides of the aged care industry and throughout their 40 years, Bethany Aged Care Centre’s commitment to independence, choice and dignity for their residents has never wavered.
Louise Gallagher is the Centre Manager of Bethany Aged Care Centre and has been with the Centre for just over 5 years. She says that the most rewarding part of her role is being able to positively influence the way that the elderly are cared for.
“Maintaining our residents’ independence, dignity and choice is paramount for me and the staff at Bethany. It’s very much about
consultative decision-making,” says Louise. “We try to make this like a home where you can choose how you want to have your care and when you want to have your care. This also goes beyond their care, it’s also about nutrition, activities, everything. If we’re going to renovate our public entertaining area, we consult with all our residents, and they get to choose the type of décor they want in there. We did this just recently with new décor throughout the home.”
Throughout the Centre, you can see the homely touches, from fish tanks, artworks done by residents, cosy gardens with quirky statues, a sentimental work of art in remembrance of all residents at the Centre and their very own goodies store, run by residents and the Centre’s Lifestyle team. The values of integrity, compassion,

respect, diversity and collaboration are crucial to TSAAC. Walking through the corridors of the Centre with Louise and Julie, Lifestyle Coordinator, you can see these values are an intrinsic part of Bethany in their day-to-day interactions, from having a casual one-onone chat with residents walking by, joining in on a group activity, to providing a dining
experience for residents and their loved ones.

What inspired you to become a chef? The creativity that comes from cooking, no real rules and do what you want in regard to flair. Can you share a memorable dish from your culinary journey? That would be cooking in the kitchen with my Mum when I was 8 years old, preparing and sharing meals with the family. I have been in commercial kitchens since I was 16 years old, that’s about 30 years! I have worked with so many cuisines I have forgotten some of them, but it’s more of the moment in time rather than a particular dish.
What is your approach to cooking?
Cooking during a service as opposed to cooking in general is completely different. To control a service is to remain calm and collected, and this reflects on your team which in turn reflects on your food.
How do you stay creative and innovative in the kitchen?
Always looking for the next challenge, if you are always willing to learn you will have no problem in creativeness. Your menu may be set for a period of time but looking at your specials board as a creative tool always helps to keep your mind fresh and keeps you coming up with new ideas on a daily basis.
What are some essential tools or ingredients you always have in your kitchen? There are so many to choose from, but I always ensure I have good quality olive oil and quality sea salt on hand.
Can you describe your signature dish and what makes it special? I personally can’t say I have a favourite or signature dish as I feel a signature dish should only be temporary. I am always looking to do different things.
I personally can’t say I have a favourite or signature dish as I feel a signature dish should only be temporary, I am always looking to do di erent things.
What advice would you give to aspiring chefs who are just starting out? My advice is simple. Don’t be fooled by TV shows, its not that easy in a kitchen environment.
Can you share a cooking tip or technique that home cooks might find useful? My tip is don’t overcomplicate things, focus on getting fresh quality ingredients and put flavour first.
Can you describe the dining experience that guests can expect at your restaurant?
At Laurieton Hotel, guests can expect a delightful dining experience featuring fresh produce, tasty food, excellent value for money, and a diverse menu. We use the freshest local ingredients to create delicious, satisfying dishes. Our extensive menu offers something for everyone, from classic pub favourites to unique, flavourful seasonal options, all at affordable prices. Whether you’re here for a quick bite or a leisurely meal, our commitment to quality and variety ensures a memorable visit every time. How do you source your ingredients, and do you prioritise local or seasonal produce?
Prioritising seasonal produce is a must, and we always try our best to utilise local ingredients. A visit to your local farmers market is a great way to go straight to the source.
How do you ensure consistency in the quality of your food and service?
Effective management is key to delivering an exceptional dining experience. From receiving fresh produce to maintaining accurate recipes, we ensure every dish meets our high standards. Clear communication with our team is crucial, ensuring everyone understands our commitment to quality and consistency. This ongoing system guarantees that guests enjoy tasty food, great value for money, and a wide variety of options every visit.
How do you accommodate dietary restrictions or preferences for your guests?
We are highly conscientious of dietary requirements, recognising their growing importance. It is our standard practice to accommodate all requests by changing, swapping, or remaking dishes to ensure every guest is satisfied. We are committed to fulfilling our patrons’ needs, offering a diverse menu that caters to various dietary preferences and restrictions. Your comfort and satisfaction are our top priorities.

t’s that time again long, hot, sunny days have disappeared and the chill in the air has indeed led us to crank up the heaters.
Being fortunate enough to live in the ‘best climate in Australia’, indeed the outdoor lifestyle and mild temperatures make the living easy for the vast majority of the year. That’s partly why the need to unpack the winter woollies and rug up is a bit of a fun novelty around here. Let’s face it, even the idea of wearing long sleeves seems kind of out there after the long stretch of months where such a thing is quite unheard of. For us Port Mac folks the idea of a temporary hibernation seems actually kind of appealing. A few weeks to stop, regroup, stay in and cook up some giant pots of comfort food and have a few early nights.
And just knowing the ‘harsh’ part of winter is a mere ‘few weeks’ long makes it seem even more blissful.
Here in Port Mac the much subtler change in season though is fortunately still just about cool enough to allow us to enjoy the ‘perks’ of winter. We’re not quite in Queensland folks, we’re still close enough to feel the chill of those icy southerlies, not to mention the lack
of insulation in our ‘best climate in Australia’ buildings mean those draughts do indeed blow through at times…
A.K.A. Red Wine Weather! Now, some might argue that red wine weather is any weather, all year around. Red wine tragics indeed – and I would certainly say that I am one of those, if not just for the sheer love of the stuff. But somehow to me the flavour profiles, warming tannins and ambient temperature of most reds don’t seem at all attractive when you’re wiping sweat off your brow on any ordinary February day.
Much in the same way Aussies might cringe at the British and their lukewarm pints instead of an ice-cold schooner, there’s just a subtle nod to the climate right there.
Gloriously and happily though, now it is time for us to dust off those treasures in the cellar. Pinots, cabernet blends, GSMs, Nebbiolo’s, full on Aussie Shirazes and a multitude of untapped treasures from other lands – the options are endless and delightful. We have a few on the go at once, tapped via Coravin of course to ensure longevity of the wines and allow for freedom of choice on any given day.
Hmm Barolo tonight, Brunello tomorrow? It’s a tough one but we can play it by ear….
Beers and whites away for now, cooler nights lend themselves so perfectly to hearty and comforting foods and warming, flavourful reds.
Appetites are geared towards the need to keep oneself warm, so bring on the cook ups, bakes and life affirming soups. Somehow food just tastes so much better in winter, something to do with its additional comforting role probably. Additionally the kitchen itself becomes a far more attractive prospect. Something to do with wanting to be close to the oven rather than breaking into a sweat at the sight of it me thinks.
No longer just grazing as we tend to do over summer, we crave the substantial and fortifying. That means slow cooked proteins and richer flavours, and did I forget to mention cheese for afters? Red wine and cheese are mandatory for their warming and fortifying qualities on a cosy night out at your favourite local restaurant.
Whatever your winter penchant is, be sure to enjoy while you still have the chance…. Indeed, that sun will amp up its power again before we know it and I for one will be back to sticking beers in the freezer for maximum chill factor. Meanwhile – cheers to loads of lovely reds!

STOWAWAY BY HELLO SAILOR
Since its opening in late 2020 the name Hello Sailor has been synonymous with cocktails.
At the time of opening, few venues were focused on inspired cocktails in high volume, with consistent quality. Hello Sailor arrived to fill a gap. The venue’s record sits at 665 cocktails prepared in one evening. For such a small bar this is a huge achievement especially keeping to the high standard required. The engine room ran ‘really” hot that night.
Now, more than three amazing years behind them, Hello Sailor have a large portfolio of cocktail creations via collabs with local business, bespoke drinks for charity functions, specially themed event beverages and consistent evolvement of the menu. Their cocktail tool kits are fully loaded and ready for stepping into a new chapter.
With the arrival of the cooler winter months, Hello Sailor’s Stowaways mode is taking the reins, introducing a much more refined boutique offering with a new cocktail menu to enjoy by the fire. While there are plenty of new cocktails to experience, you’ll be pleased to still find some of the original Hello Sailor favourites such as the HS Coco Margie and the Lady Danger still holding their place on the menu. But more excitingly, the HS Crew have dug deep into their wizardry cocktail box of tricks and rustled up some truly inspired, thoughtful and exciting concoctions.
The Inicio Anejo Tequila provides a robust base with notes of oak and caramel, while the Nixta Corn Liquor adds a sweet and nutty undertone. Ancho Reyes Poblano Liquor brings a hint of smokiness and spice, elevating the complexity of the drink. The pièce de résistance, however, is the addition of truffle oil—just a few drops are enough to infuse the cocktail with an unmistakable earthy aroma that lingers on the palate.
The Jaguar is more than just a cocktail; it’s an experience. The rich layers of flavour unfold with each sip, making it a drink that’s perfect for those who appreciate the finer things in life. Treat yourself to something extraordinary, this cocktail is sure to leave a lasting impression.
ASip of Inspiration! We are thrilled to announce the launch of our latest inspired cocktail menu, a curated selection of innovative drinks that redefine the art of mixology.
Our expert bartenders have crafted a stunning array of cocktails that blend classic techniques with imaginative twists, featuring unique ingredients and delightful flavour combinations.
From the smoky allure of our Oaxacan Old Fashioned to the vibrant and floral Bramble 2.0, each cocktail is designed to surprise and delight. This menu is more than just a list of drinks - it’s a journey into the world of creative cocktails, where every sip tells a story.
We invite you to join us and sample the offerings from our new cocktail menu. Whether you’re a seasoned cocktail aficionado or just looking for something new and exciting, we have the perfect drink for you. Bring your friends, relax, and discover your new favourite cocktail.
Hello Sailor has an amazing team behind them that help run this awesome venue each day. Can you introduce your team to our readers and their roles?
Hello Sailor has an incredibly committed leadership team whose focus is to provide the best guest journey possible and these values are promoted by all the crew.
This journey usually begins with my righthand gal. Café Manager, Floor Leader, Head of HR, Admin Queen, and Hello Sailor's Mamma Bear, Hollie has been part of the crew pretty much from day one. If you have ever visited HS, you will have been lucky enough to receive one of Hollie's warm smiling welcomes, next level hospitality and great coffee.
Your journey would continue to the bar where you’ll find the Bar Manager Jacob and his team of busy beverage bees. Jacob’s
passion and knowledge for mixology is vast, he is the mastermind behind so many of our delicious cocktails and always with a welcoming smile. Jacob has just celebrated his 2-year anniversary with HS.
Head Chef Andrew will be busy with the boys smashing out tasty street food treats. New to the HS crew, Andy is passionate about great flavours and quality and no matter how busy we get, his focus is always to serve the tastiest, well made food.
If you have ever visited HS, you will have been lucky enough to receive one of Hollie's warm smiling welcomes, next level hospitality and great coffee.
When we talk kitchen crew, we cannot forget to mention Joel (Sous Chef) one of Hello Sailor's first employees and one of the hardest workers you will ever find, holding the title of Hello Sailor resident joker and mood lifter.
Hello Sailor has always made it a priority to employe the right people and have been fortunate to pick up some incredible young people to help steer our ship in the right direction. We are so very grateful to those we have now and those who have moved onto other adventures.
Can you describe a typical day at Hello Sailor?
There really is no such thing as a typical day in the world of hospitality and this certainly includes a Hello Sailor one. Every day brings a new challenge on our mission to be great at our trade to provide those great guest experiences. One thing is for sure the day starts with a coffee and ends with a beer. How do you ensure excellent customer
service and guest satisfaction?
Hello Sailor was built off the idea of a “guest journey” and the best possible experience. This begins as you arrive at the entry to HS, to a smile and an earnest welcome from the crew. This vibe will travel with you into the venue where you’ll experience great food, thoughtful, inspired cocktails, a cracking selection of independent beers and wines and some amazing live entertainment, always knowing that we are working our magic for you.
What training and development opportunities are available for staff members at this venue?
The crew of Hello Sailor are offered the tools to develop skills within the industry, encouraged to grow and feel a sense of ownership and pride for where they work. Untrained staff and those that don’t feel invested are unable to perform to their best ability and it’s this ability that shines out regarding our guest experience. Train your team well and sadly they may still leave, don’t train them and sadly they may stay.
What are some unique aspects or features of this venue that you think guests appreciate the most?
Our location. Hidden away in the Port Macquarie Marina on the banks of the
Hastings River, a summer's day with a warm breeze really is hard to beat. Likewise, on a clear crisp winter arvo with the firepits roaring there is no place like it to meet and spend time with family or friends.
Our offering, Hello Sailor Menus for both food and drinks has always shone out as special, different and exciting.
Our team. Without doubt, consistently some of the best hospitality serve you will ever receive.
How does teamwork contribute to the success of this venue?
...teamwork makes the dream work. We are very blessed to have an inclusive and supportive team built on friendships and respect here at Hello Sailor.
As the term goes, teamwork makes the dream work. We are very blessed to have an inclusive and supportive team built on friendships and respect here at Hello Sailor. No task is ever too much for any of our staff and everyone is trained and happy to back each other where and when possible. Can you share some of your favourite memories of Hello Sailor?
Easy to say that every time we are involved
in a charity event such as Toxtails or a special function like Melbourne Cup or an Oktoberfest, these are the times we work the hardest and have the most fun as a team. Not to mention all the amazing live entertainment we have had over the years including Coterie, Jack Botts, Kool Vibrations, Phil Jamieson and all the great local musicians that have performed on the HS stage. There was also the time the Rubens and Ocean Alley swung by for dinner and some laughs. We have also had births, weddings and some pretty silly staff parties.
Tell us about the new and exciting things taking place at your venue and what the next 6 months look like for Hello Sailor.
Moving into the cooler seasons HS has now activated its stowaway winter mode, providing a warmer and more intimate experience. This includes seasonal menus.
Our entertainment calendar is packed with both free and ticketed shows and we’ll be involved in a number of special functions also. Thanks Lee.
Maxwell Ramsey is a resident at Whiddon in Laurieton, and in a town of just under 2,000 people, Max could very well be the town’s oldest resident a er celebrating his 100th birthday on the 6th May!
i Max, we wish you a very happy belated 100th birthday! You've lived through so many remarkable moments in history. Can you take us back to your childhood in Pambula and Bimbaya and share some memories of growing up on the NSW South Coast?
I lived on the land and had dairy cattle and sheep. I grew up in Pambula, Bimbaya and Toowomba. I love farm life and all the land has to offer. At times it was tough growing up because you saw some sad things. One of my strongest memories was watching the ewes calve. At times they would labour all night and their bodies were exhausted by daylight. The crows were always hovering above and would swoop down and eat their eyes out while they were still alive. Sadly, I had to kill a lot of stock at an early age, farming life was both rewarding but extremely hard.
As a very young man, you were already working with your own bullock team. What was it like working with bullocks, and how do you think those experiences shaped you?
At the age of 9,10,11 and 12 I had my bullock team. I had a team of 16 bullocks, and I
was the only operator. I broke them all in when they were young. It was a bit like body building, they grew quite large and bigger than an average size. This experience gave me common sense as there was a lot to learn about how to navigate a bullock through gates and rivers etc.
You've mentioned that the 1940s were your favourite decade. What made that period so special for you, especially in terms of your career and personal life?
I am not sure why I said the 1940's were my favourite years. I lost my Mum, and in 1940 I had to go off to war. My mum tore her heart in 1932, helping my grandmother get up after a fall. There were no heart specialists back then to have surgery and my Mum struggled for another 8 years before she finally succumbed to her injuries when I was 16 years old. I went to war for 4 years and I lost so many mates during this time. I was one of the lucky ones to return
from the war, but not without the emotional scars it left behind.
You and Shirley shared 71 wonderful years together. Can you tell us a bit about your relationship and some of the highlights of your time together?
The paddocks were all ploughed and full of mushrooms and rabbits. I hired a boat for 10 shillings for a week and caught 7 flatheads.
Shirley and I married in 1948. We had some rough patches at times. We both made some mistakes along the way but as a dedicated couple we worked through them all and we shared 71 years together. One of our highlights was in 1950 when we came to Laurieton for the first time. The paddocks were all ploughed and full of mushrooms and rabbits. I hired a boat for 10 shillings for a week and caught 7 flatheads. As a Master Builder, you had a keen eye for well-built homes. What drew you to this profession, and what do you think makes a house truly special?
When I was a child, I spent many hours with my defacto grandfather building. I built horse
drawn vehicles and shearing sheds. At school I had a teacher who took me under his wing and helped me gain all the woodworking skills I needed to have a successful life.
I love to work with timber. The timber is always alive! The buildings had to be aesthetically pleasing, made with the best materials available and crafted to their finest potential.
You also worked as an Aircraft Instrument Technician. What sparked your interest in aviation, and what was your experience like in that field?
My time working as an Aircraft Instrument Technician was quite different. I had eyesight for anything amazing. I enjoyed my work; it gave me immense pleasure over many years.
You've had some adventurous moments in your life, like surviving a fall from a horse in the dark. How did you manage to stay resilient during challenging times?
During challenging times, I stayed resilient by always keeping fit. It's like playing sport, you have to always be on your best game to
survive the challenges thrown at you during life.
Looking back, what advice would you give to your 20-year-old self? What would you say the secret to a happy life is?
I always tried to see life through other people's eyes. I took the time to find solutions and understandings for certain events in my life. If I had my time over again, there are a lot of things I would change and a lot of different paths I would follow.
staying up to date with current events? You must exercise every day, or you will have a fall easier as you age.
I have always had an enquiring mind; to find the reasons why things happen. It is important to always stay ahead to be prepared for the next obstacle.
The secret to a happy life would becommunicate and converse at every level with your spouse! It is the most important advice I can give.
The secret to a happy life would be - communicate and converse at every level with your spouse! It is the most important advice I can give.
At 100 years young, you're still staying active and engaged with the world. What motivates you to keep exercising and
Finally, can you share a bit about how you celebrated your 100th birthday and what the highlights were for you?
My birthday was one big highlight. I had a party with my family and friends at the Laurieton Services Club. I had people come from Wollongong and other places to attend.
At Whiddon, I had a special morning tea with all my new friends and staff at the facility. The media came to interview me, and I became a star.

Alex McNaught has caught many locals’ a ention recently with his Art In An Hour project, where he creates elaborate drawings on the sand at Oxley Beach, capturing them with drone photography and creating timelapse videos of the process.
You have been noticed recently for your Art In An Hour project, can you tell us what this is and how it got started?
Sand Art is created by making lines in the sand using tools such as a rake and can result in some very striking patterns and can be scaled to any size which increases the impact even more.
I started doing this in January as a new creative outlet. I call it “Art In An Hour” because I am working against the return of the tide and I only have so much space to work in and so an hour turns out to be about right to do something of a good size with visual impact.
How do you come up with your designs and where do you draw inspiration from?
There are many inspirational sources to draw from, such as mandelas, illustrations, doodling, 3D illusions and much more and of course other sand artists! The process typically comes down to
simplifying designs that appeal and are doable with a rake and one hour. I often use one design to start with and then change things to taste and may also add further ad-hoc embellishments on the day, so there is an endless stream of possibilities!
What is the process like from idea/ concept to having a finished design on the beach?
With a prospective design I sketch it out and see how complicated it is to construct. If it’s very involved on paper it is many times harder and time consuming at the beach when standing in the middle of it, so it’s always a balance between design impact and complexity. By the time I have the final version done I only need a quick refresh look just before heading
down to be ready to draw.
I start by doing the essential linework first then I selectively fill it in according to the design, then I clean up all the blank areas and edges to leave a nice crisp result that stands out on the beach!
I start by doing the essential linework first then I selectively fill it in according to the design, then I clean up all the blank areas...
What has some of the feedback been like from the community and people you know? There has been universal approval from visitors and locals alike and across all demographics and age groups!
I often get calls from the path above and given a thumbs up and have plenty of people who wander over to take a closer look and have a chat too.
Continued over...
It has given me a lot of pleasure to do and I can see it has done the same for many viewers!
I’ve also introduced mazes since they are wonderfully interactive and people can get directly involved and I barely put the rake down before kids and adults alike are keen to jump into it which I fully encourage!
You’re also a photographer, and part of this project is capturing your designs once they’re complete. Do you use any particular method or equipment for shooting a large scale piece like this?
I have favoured making a timelapse video of each drawing from a high pole mount and when a complete set of drawings have been done then I create a single video from all the clips with a soundtrack. What other areas of photography do you dabble in?
As well as the core work of traditional landscape tripod based images I have used drones extensively to free myself from ground limitations and now am pushing myself to cover water level and underwater images as well.
Video sits alongside the still imagery as a means to communicate and convey meaning. I have generated an extensive portfolio of whale videos from the unique perspective of the drone which is being watched in such diverse areas such as aged care facilities, National Parks Visitors Centres and even by an internationally renowned whale researcher.
More recently other public interest topics such as the recent opening of Lake Cathie enjoyed a huge response and sharing on social media since the drone could capture all the rushing movement of the water in such dramatic detail and perspective.
More recently other public interest topics such as the recent opening of Lake Cathie enjoyed a huge response and sharing on social media since the drone could capture all the rushing movement of the water in such dramatic detail and perspective.
I have also fabricated sturdy camera mounts to withstand the rigors of jet-ski and motorcycle riding so I can use 360 video
cameras and capture an all encompassing view no matter where and how hard the going gets.
I use similar mounts for my Google Street View captures to fill in blank areas of Google Maps for which a major utility company specifically got in touch to thank me for having the only imagery of an area that they were interested in!
Have you got any other ideas or projects like this in the works?
What are some of your aspirations for your art and photography moving forward?
I always push myself to improve my stills and video work and I like to take the equipment to increasingly challenging and remote areas to bring back unique imagery from there. With the Sand Art I want to move forward from purely geometric styles and add more “organic” and freestyle forms into the mix as my skills develop.
Just recently I have wanted to explore the entirely different creative realm of “Kinetic Art”. A search for such as “rolling ball sculptures” will show you where I am headed with that.
I am aiming for a new take on that idea with an innovative use of software and electronics to deliver an array of dynamic and mesmerising possibilities. I have been a lifelong technical software developer so that side is not a problem but I have very little electronics experience so I have ordered a number of parts to learn circuit construction then test the performance of key interactive components and proof of concept where I can blend aesthetics with just the right mix of discreetly applied technology to create something new and entirely captivating. Where can we follow your journey or get in touch?

day and also if it’s not raining! I like to be there most days.
I give a heads up on the dedicated Facebook page of the days ahead so people can have an idea of when to expect drawing as many people have asked so they can watch it being done.
Everyone is welcome to holler or stop by for a chat there anytime!
At the end of each cycle I like to summarise the latest drawings in a quick and watchable timelapse video and post that up to my YouTube channel.

Abbie Jane is a young LGBTQIA+ entrepreneur who, at the age of 12 growing up in Broken Hill, realised that she probably wasn’t the only one feeling isolated and alone. She started giving out rainbow pride beads for people to wear on their shoelaces which identified them as a member of the LGBTQIA+ community or a ‘safe person’ or ally and so, the Rainbow Shoelace Project (RSP) was born! Abbie has since relocated to Port Macquarie, and the RSP has been spreading across Australia and beyond!
Hi Abbie, can you share a bit about what the Rainbow Shoelace Project is and how the idea for this came about?
The Rainbow Shoelace Project is the simple idea of putting pride coloured beads on your shoelaces to show support to the LGBTQIA+ community. These beads on laces increase visibility and identify a person who is likely to be a safe person. It also acts as a way
of reducing homophobia and bullying by normalising people seeing pride colours. In addition, when a member of the LGBTQIA+ community sees a person wearing the beads, it allows them to feel accepted.
It was needed because it gave allies a great way to show support. It was needed because it was a discrete way for LGTBQIA+ people to express themselves.
Why did you feel this initiative was needed and what effect did you hope this simple gesture would have on members of the LGBTQIA+ community?
When I was 12, I had just started high school and I heard a lot of casual homophobia and slurs being used. I was feeling isolated and alone. I was wearing pride-coloured beads on my shoes to school, but I was worried that would make me a target for bullying, so I took them off. But then I realised that I wouldn’t be the only one who would be feeling this way. I thought about how important it would be for other young people to see rainbow beads on someone’s shoes, which would identify them as a ‘safe’ person.
You normally only see rainbows when you are looking up, but when you are experiencing
homophobia and bullying you tend to look down and hide yourself away from the world. Imagine feeling isolated and scared, only to see rainbow beads on a person’s shoes. That small action would end up having a huge impact on the LGBTQIA+ community.
The Rainbow Shoelace Project was a project that the LGBTQIA+ community needed because LGBTQIA+ people were still experiencing homophobia and bullying. It was needed because it gave allies a great way to show support. It was needed because it was a discrete way for LGTBQIA+ people to express themselves. How did you begin handing out the rainbow beads? How has the process of giving away rainbow beads evolved since you began?
The project started with my friend Max and I pinning beads to the local notice board outside the local Woolworths in Broken Hill. Each pack contained 12 beads, 2 of each colour of the pride flag, The beads would be taken, and
I had someone come up and say they noticed my rainbow beads and thanked me saying it made them feel safe and welcome...

refilled each week. I then started offering the beads via an Instagram page. Now there is a website and the packs of beads are still free, people just have to pay for shipping. There is also the option for people to ‘pay what they can afford’ to keep the project free for others who need it. We have given out over 250,000 packs of beads to date and most PRIDE festivals across Australia have an organisation there giving out the beads for us. Where is the furthest location you have sent beads off to so far?
We have sent them all around Australia but also internationally to Mexico, Czech Republic, South Korea, USA and England to name a few. You’ve received some recognition and awards for your work with the RSP, can you share a bit about the awards you’ve received and what it was like being recognised by the community?
I am incredibly grateful to have been recognised, but what I love even more is that it brings more awareness to the Rainbow Shoelace Project and helps us spread the message even further. What has some of the feedback you have
Could you share any memorable stories you’ve heard in regards to the RSP?
We have had so many wonderful messages from people who have been significantly impacted by the RSP. The messages have been de-identified.
“I love what what you are doing for the community”
“I was … at an event … over the weekend. I had someone come up and say they noticed my rainbow beads and thanked me saying it made them feel safe and welcome”
“Thank you Abbie, you are a superhero! I’m 65 and I wish there was an “Abbie” when I was young.”
“Thank you for showing the world how something so simple can help so many feel seen & safe x”
The rainbow beads are such a simple way for allies to show support to the LGBTQIA+ community. Do you have any other suggestions or advice for people wanting to know how to support LGBTQIA+ people?
Just be kind! There are lots of small things that you can do as an ally that can have a great
impact on others. For example, you can wear a pride pin, lanyard and rainbow shoelace project beads and by speaking out against discrimination and bullying. You can also arrange to fly the Pride/Pride Progress flag at your workplace/ school on days such as IDAHOBIT day, Wear It Purple day or during Pride Month or Mardi Gras. What is IDAHOBIT Day and why is it important to you?
It’s the International Day against Homophobia, Biphobia and Transphobia and it happens on May 17 each year. Days against discrimination are so important because minority groups, such as the LGBTQIA+ community are still feeling unsafe and discriminated against everyday. You also have a book being published this year, could you tell us a little about it?
It’s a beautiful picture book, authored by Claire Thompson and me, about the story of the Rainbow Shoelace Project. Pre-orders are available now – you can find the link via our linktree (QR Code).
Where can we follow the Rainbow Bead Project’s journey or get in touch?
We are on Insta, Tiktok and Facebook @ rainbowshoelaceproject, and I’m on linked in @Abbie Jane. We also have a website if you would like to make a donation or order some free beads (or pay what you can afford) www.rainbowshoelace.com.au
Noah ick has been playing rugby locally since he was eight years old, and he has been selected as part of the Australian Deaf Rugby side to tour South Africa in August this year!
Hi Noah. Can you tell us a bit about how you got started playing rugby and what you love about it?
I started playing rugby through my primary school, St Peter’s. A mate in the year above me said they needed players to make up a team and I should play. I have always loved playing sports and initially this was another sport I could get involved in, as well as giving me the opportunity to hang out with my friends. I really enjoy the social
aspect of being part of a team sport and the club atmosphere and mateship of the Hogs and Vikings were additional factors that have kept me playing footy.
One highlight for me included
playing in the grand final of the NSW Catholic Primary Schools Rugby Union 10 a Side Knockout in Sydney in 2017 when I was in Year 6.
Talk us through your footy journey so far, where do you play and what have been some of your early highlights?
I played my first game of rugby in Port Macquarie’s Friday night rugby competition
representing St Peter’s Primary school. I was about 8 years old at the time. The following year I played with the inaugural Hogs team, coached by Andrew Kable, and remained with them until I joined the Vikings in the under-14s, which was the start of my six year career with the club. I also played in various school based competitions with both St Peter’s Primary and Mackillop
College, and represented the Mid North Coast Axemen on a number of occasions. One highlight for me included playing in the grand final of the NSW Catholic Primary Schools Rugby Union 10 a Side Knockout in Sydney in 2017 when I was in Year 6. The other highlight was the following year in 2018 when my Hogs team toured New Zealand, and I had the honour of captaining that team. This year, I debuted in the seniors at the Vikings, which has been another great experience in my rugby career.
You have recently been selected as part
of the Australian Deaf Rugby side to tour South Africa this August. What did it feel like to find out you were off overseas to represent your country?
Being selected as part of the Australian Deaf Rugby side to tour South Africa this August was a bit of a surreal experience. It’s fantastic to be selected and I’m really looking forward to it. I am incredibly grateful for the opportunity and excited to represent my country on an international stage.
Who makes up this Australian team, and have you had any opportunities to train together?
The Australian Deaf Rugby team comprises 17 players from NSW, QLD, TAS, and ACT. Trials were held in Dapto in March this year, and we stayed together and got to know each other through the trials and socialising. Given that the team is spread across Australia, regular training sessions are challenging to arrange. However, we have an upcoming weekend on the Gold Coast, which will be a really great opportunity to prepare for the tour.
Can you share a bit about what’s planned for this tour?
and playing with the boys. This experience will be amazing as it allows me to play in another country and compete against other nations. I’m also keen to explore South Africa as I have never been there before. It will be exciting to see the sights and experience another culture. There have been some fundraising events to help get the Australian Deaf side on their way, how has that gone so far and are there any other fundraisers in the works before you go?
is experience will be amazing as
it allows me to play in another country and compete against other nations. I’m also keen to explore South Africa as I have never been there before. It will be exciting to see the sights and experience another culture.
We will be travelling to South Africa to play rugby against multiple other deaf rugby nations. These include England, South Africa, Zimbabwe and Ghana. We will be playing tournaments in both 7s and 10s formats. Outside of playing, we will be going on tours and sightseeing around Johannesburg which includes a team safari, which I think will be a highlight.
What are you most looking forward to about it? What do you hope to get out of this experience?
I am most looking forward to getting overseas
On Saturday 25th May the Hastings Valley Vikings held a charity day to raise money for us. This included an event at Port City Bowling Club after the game where every individual First grade jersey worn on the day was auctioned. These jerseys are a special edition Vikings / Australian Deaf Rugby design which were made specifically for the day. Hopefully there will be some other events before the tour in August. Every dollar raised helps to reduce the players' individual costs for the tour, so any money raised or donated is really appreciated.
How else can we get behind you and this team and show our support?
We need partnerships and sponsors so if any businesses out there are looking for a great cause and high exposure we'd love an email from them at deafrugby@hotmail.com. Another way to help is by spreading the word, it’s such an amazing thing to be a part of. There must be so many deaf or just hard of hearing players out there that still don't know we exist and that this opportunity is available to them. Anyone who knows a deaf or hard of hearing person who would like a go at rugby should encourage them to get involved.
Thanks Noah.
s the winter weather settles in, it becomes increasingly challenging to evade the sniffles and coughs that often accompany it. Regrettably, for some individuals, this season serves as a stark reminder of pelvic floor issues or can even bring about new issues. Coughs and sneezes, common occurrences during this time, can result in urinary incontinence. So, here are our top tips to stay on top this winter. Stay on top of those coughs. It’s imperative that we stay on top of respiratory issues; more importantly coughing. When we cough or sneeze, our bodies experience a temporary increase in pressure within the abdomen. This sudden rise in pressure can put strain on the pelvic floor muscles, which are responsible for supporting the bladder and other pelvic organs. If these muscles are weakened or not functioning properly, they may struggle to maintain control over the bladder, leading to urinary leakage. It’s crucial to identify and treat the underlying cause of the cough whenever possible. For instance, if the cough is due to asthma, appropriate medication and management strategies can help reduce its severity. Similarly staying hydrated and quitting smoking can significantly decrease the frequency and severity of coughing episodes.
Pelvic Floor Exercises: Performing pelvic floor exercises, commonly known as Kegel exercises, can play a crucial role in addressing and
preventing urinary leakage caused by coughing and sneezing. These exercises specifically target the muscles that support the bladder, urethra, and other pelvic organs, helping to strengthen and tone them over time. Just like any other muscle in the body, the pelvic floor muscles can be strengthened through regular exercise. By incorporating pelvic floor exercises into your routine, you can improve the strength and control of these muscles, reducing the likelihood of urinary leakage during coughing, sneezing, or other activities. It’s important to understand that squeezing at the traffic lights, or at the kettle may not be enough to improve strength rapidly.
The Knack: Performing the ‘Knack’ is a simple and effective way to reduce leaking and can be done discreetly. The knack refers to activation or squeezing of your pelvic floor muscles prior to coughing or sneezing in order to brace and withstand the extra pressure placed on the bladder. This is also a great technique to use even without leaking, to help brace and reduce likelihood of urinary leaking occurring later.
Rest Rest Rest: Resting allows your body to focus its energy on fighting off the illness and promoting healing. When you’re sick, your body is already under stress, and pushing yourself too hard can further weaken your immune system and prolong recovery. By giving yourself adequate rest and downtime, you allow your body to recuperate more efficiently, which can indirectly contribute to better pelvic floor
function and reduced urinary leakage.
Managing Constipation: Combating constipation takes on added significance when coupled with illness, as it can exacerbate existing health challenges and compromise pelvic floor function. During sickness, factors such as dehydration, medication side effects, and reduced physical activity can contribute to constipation, intensifying pressure on the pelvic floor muscles. This heightened strain amplifies the risk of urinary leakage and pelvic floor dysfunction. Effectively managing constipation while unwell requires a multifaceted approach, including staying hydrated, consuming fibre-rich foods, and maintaining gentle physical activity when possible. By addressing constipation in tandem with illness, individuals can alleviate undue pressure on the pelvic floor, fostering better bladder control and supporting overall pelvic health amidst sickness.
Seek Professional Help: If you find yourself always dreading winter months due to an increase in pelvic floor issues, you find yourself starting to leak or maybe it’s been a lifelong issue - it’s imperative that you seek professional help. Women’s Health Physiotherapists have become the front runners for helping women achieve improved pelvic floor health and become leak free. As Women’s Health Physiotherapists we are able to assess the pelvic floor muscles directly, provide guidance, and an individualised program to help achieve improved pelvic health.
HAVE YOU EVER WOKEN UP WITH A SORE JAW, OR EXPERIENCED DIFFICULTY OPENING YOUR MOUTH WIDE?
The temporomandibular joint (TMJ) is a hinge-like joint on either side of your jaw allowing your mouth to open and close as well as move side to side. These movements form the basis of our ordinary and daily functions of chewing, talking and yawning. You can feel them by placing your fingers in front of your ears and opening your mouth.
Issues with the TMJ are called temporomandibular disorders (TMD), which is a group of conditions that affect the jaw joint and surrounding muscles. Despite its prevalence affecting millions of people worldwide, it often remains misunderstood.
What are the common culprits behind TMD?
In most cases the exact cause is unclear but there are multiple factors that can be contributing to TMD including:
• Grinding/clenching: This unconscious habit can put excessive pressure on the jaw muscles and joints and can be further multiplied by stress and anxiety.
• Arthritis: Degenerative joint diseases like osteoarthritis affect the TMJ leading to pain, stiffness and limited movement.
• Jaw injury: Trauma to the joint through a blow or accident can damage the TMJ and its function.
What are the signs and symptoms of TMD?
• Jaw pain and tenderness during rest as well as function
• Painful clicking or popping when opening or closing the mouth
• Limited jaw movement or locked jaw
• Recurrent earaches and headaches
What can be done for TMD?
If you suspect you have TMD, it’s crucial to seek professional evaluation. A dentist can help diagnose the specific type of TMD and its underlying cause. A dentist can diagnose it by noting your symptoms and taking a detailed history, examining your head, neck, face and jaw for tenderness, clicking or popping as well as take an X-ray MRI or CT.
Conservative treatment reduces symptoms in 50-90% of patients.
Management of TMD can involve:
• Self-care strategies: awareness of the cause, use of heat and cold packs as well as behaviour changes such as stress reduction are essential to treating TMD and can significantly improve symptoms
• Medications: anti-inflammatory drugs, muscle relaxants and some antidepressants have been proven to reduce the pain associated with TMD
• Physical therapy: stretching and mobilisation techniques can help with the pain as well as improve the range of motion
• Injections: Botox injections have been shown to be effective in certain cases of TMD
• Surgery: as a last resort surgery may be undertaken to correct structural problems. TMD can be a frustrating condition, but with proper diagnosis and treatment, most people can find relief and return to their normal activities. If you experience any persistent jaw pain or difficulty moving your jaw call the caring team at Sundial Dental on 6583 3533 or 6585 2015 to get your oral heath back on track.

Hi Vivienne, congratulations on North Brother CrossFit's impressive performance in the Masters CrossFit League. How does it feel to see your gym succeed on such a large scale despite being from a small town? We are very excited to see North Brother CrossFit having great success! It's inspiring to witness our athletes defy expectations and showcase that there is no age limit to fitness and competition. I am very proud of our members’ hard work, dedication, and the supportive community we've built together here in Laurieton.
North Brother CrossFit had the 3rd largest number of registered athletes in the Masters CrossFit League with 37 athletes. What do you think contributes to this high level of participation?
I believe our high level of participation in the Masters CrossFit League is largely attributed to the strong sense of community that we've fostered at North Brother CrossFit. Our gym provides a welcoming and inclusive
environment where everyone feels supported and encouraged, regardless of their fitness level or background. This community spirit not only motivates individuals to join but, also, keeps them engaged and committed to their fitness journey.
The Masters League offers a unique opportunity for individuals to introduce competition into their fitness routine. It provides a platform for athletes from all walks of life to come together, challenge themselves, and celebrate their achievements. This inclusive approach to competition has resonated with people from all around the Mid North Coast, which, I believe has helped our high level of participation.
With around 15 of your athletes making it to the state level competition, how does it feel to have so many of your members competing at such a high level?
I'm incredibly proud to see our athletes making it to the state-level competition! It's a testament to the level of dedication not only from our athletes but also from our coaches and the entire community. Seeing everyone come together to support each other's goals and push themselves to compete at such a high
level is very inspiring.
Last year, North Brother CrossFit sent several athletes to the finals in New Zealand. What are your expectations for this year's Masters League Games?
This year, we have high expectations for the Masters League Games, building on the success of last year's finals in New Zealand. All our athletes are currently putting in extra training and skill work to prepare themselves for the competition ahead. I'm proud to say that they have already met our expectations with their dedication and hard work.
As we approach the Games, our main hope is that they enjoy the journey and the competition itself. Representing the Mid North Coast with pride is something we take seriously, and we know that they will continue to uphold that standard. We're excited to see them showcase their abilities and make us proud once again on the regional and hopefully national stage. As a coach and an inspiration to many, what advice do you have for someone looking to start their fitness journey, especially those who may feel intimidated or unsure?
My advice to anyone looking to start their fitness journey, especially if they feel intimidated or unsure, is this: remember that it's never too late to begin, and it's never too early either.
I joined my first CrossFit gym and found it was more than just a place to work out. I discovered a supportive community, forged
friendships, and received invaluable encouragement that exceeded my expectations.
So, if you're looking to start your fitness journey, I highly recommend reaching out to your local CrossFit gym. You'll find a welcoming environment, dedicated coaches, and fellow members who will cheer you on every step of the way. Remember, the first step is often the hardest, but it's also the most rewarding.
Looking ahead, what are your goals and aspirations for North Brother CrossFit in the coming years?
Looking ahead, my goals and aspirations for North Brother CrossFit in the coming years are multi-faceted. I aim to continue nurturing and strengthening the amazing community we've built here. Our community is the heart and soul of our gym, and I want to ensure that it remains a supportive and inclusive space for everyone who walks through our doors.
I'm determined to build upon our competitive field, both locally and on a larger scale. We'll continue to provide opportunities for our athletes to test their skills and push their limits, whether it's through local competitions like 'Friendly Fire' or by hosting larger events.
Ultimately, my vision for North Brother CrossFit is to create a thriving community where individuals of all ages and abilities can come together to pursue their fitness goals, support one another, and celebrate their achievements.
Welcome to winter and the joys of life as a woman!
The transitional phase between perimenopause and menopause typically occurs between the ages of 45 and 55, and brings about hormonal shifts that can lead to a range of physical and emotional symptoms as I’m sure many of you are well aware of! One powerful and often underappreciated strategy to mitigate these effects is building muscle mass. I’m not talking about body building or becoming a muscle bound shewomen here, so stay with me. Strength training, combined with a balanced, thoughtful approach to fitness, can play a crucial role in limiting the impacts of perimenopause and menopause. During menopause, women experience a natural decline in oestrogen levels, which is closely linked to muscle mass and bone density. The loss of oestrogen can lead to a decrease in muscle mass, making it harder to maintain a healthy weight and contributing to a higher risk of osteoporosis. Regular strength training helps to counteract these effects by increasing muscle mass and bone density, enhancing overall metabolic health, and reducing the risk of chronic diseases such as type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease. Building muscle can improve physical function and mobility, and ehanced muscle strength

supports joint health, reducing the risk of falls and fractures, and improving overall quality of life.
Beyond the physical benefits, regular exercise and muscle-building activities can also positively impact mental health, helping to alleviate symptoms such as anxiety and depression that are often associated with menopause, who wouldn’t want that?
However, training with high intensity every single day can be counterproductive, leading to increased stress on the body and potentially exacerbating menopausal symptoms. It can also cause the body to release higher levels of cortisol, a stress hormone that can disrupt sleep, increase anxiety, and contribute to weight gain around the abdomen.
To avoid these negative outcomes, women should focus on a well-rounded exercise program that includes not only strength training but also cardiovascular exercise, flexibility training, and activities that promote relaxation. Rest and recovery are just as important as the exercise itself. Allowing time for muscles to repair and recover is vital for building strength and preventing injury. Women should aim for at least one or two days of rest or low-impact activities each week.
A balanced, nutritious diet is also fundamental to support muscle building and overall health during this stage. Protein intake is particularly important, as it provides the building blocks
for muscle repair and growth. Women should aim to include a variety of protein sources in their diet, such as lean meats, fish, dairy products, legumes, and nuts. Additionally, a diet rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and healthy fats will provide the necessary vitamins and minerals to support bone health, energy levels, and overall vitality.
Staying hydrated is also crucial as adequate fluid intake helps to maintain muscle function and overall health. This can be tricky in the cooler months, so add in some herbal teas if you are finding it hard at this time of year.
Relaxation, meditation, deep breathing exercises and mindfulness practices also play an integral role in managing symptoms. These can help reduce stress, improve sleep quality, and enhance emotional well-being. These practices can be particularly beneficial when integrated into a regular fitness routine.
At Miss Motivator, we understand the unique challenges that women face during this phase in their life. Our approach, the Miss Motivator Method, focuses on motivating, moving, and maintaining momentum in a supportive, womenonly environment. If you’d like to discuss this or anything about your health and fitness, please reach out. Stay strong, Rach x

Hi Brendan. Could you share a bit about your background and the work you do here in the Port Macquarie area?
After finishing school in Brisbane I became a personal trainer for a year. I decided that I wanted to join the military and in 2010 enlisted in the Royal Australian Airforce (RAAF) as an Airfield Defence Guard. I spent 4 years in the RAAF and in October 2012 began a 7.5 month tour of Afghanistan. When my 4-year service requirement was finished I worked in Manus Island in a security role for about 9 months before starting University to become a chiropractor. Five years later I graduated and my wife and I moved to Port Macquarie. In August 2020 our first daughter Evelyn was born and August 2021
Brendan Hoey started Summerland Health
Chiropractic in 2022 with his wife Lilly. ey are both big believers in making your health and wellbeing a priority and they also make sure that they are always giving back, leading by example and supporting the community around them.
our second daughter Adelaide was born. We did another stint in Brisbane before starting Summerland Health
Chiropractic in Short Street Port Macquarie in 2022 and High Street Wauchope in 2023. We are now expecting our third child, our first boy in July 2024.
I love the scope of practice that a chiropractor can have and the immediate results we can generate by making small changes to how the body and nervous system functions.
When did you decide to become a chiropractor and what do you enjoy most about it?
I decided to become a chiropractor after my tour of Afghanistan in 2013. I was planning on changing roles in the RAAF to become a physical training instructor, but when the time
came to change, I felt that I could give more and achieve more as a chiropractor. I love the scope of practice that a chiropractor can have and the immediate results we can generate by making small changes to how the body and nervous system functions.
You run Summerland Health with your wife Lilly, what is her role at the clinic and how does it complement what you provide? Lilly is the clinic manager, nutritionist and she ensures that the place runs like a well-oiled machine. We have done personality tests and we are literally opposites which works really well because she is exceptional with the attention to detail and implementing side of
the clinic and I’m great at the big ideas and practical side of the business. Summerland Health would not be anywhere near as successful without her making the back end side of the clinic so great.
We hear you recently competed in the Ironman here in Port, can you tell us about why you enter and what you enjoy about it?
2024 Ironman Australia was my 5th Ironman Australia event. It originally started in late 2017 when Lilly said I should do Ironman after talking to my brother-in-law about how he had done a couple. Twenty weeks later I did my first ever triathlon, Ironman Australia 2018. I love the finish line feeling, the sense of accomplishment, and the incredible support you get on the day from the amazing volunteers and other competitors.
What sort of preparation do you do to ensure you’re feeling ready each year?
This year was a bit of a struggle getting an appropriate level of training in with 2 kids, 2 businesses and another baby on the way. I had to get training in whenever I could, (even if that was at 3am), and as a result my performance on the day reflected the limited training I could achieve.
How did you go in this year’s race? What was the competition like this time?
Limited training made my race harder but the professionals had a cracker race beating the 8-hour mark, really incredible efforts from them. I was happy to manage an 11hr and 48-minute effort considering everything leading up to the day.
I love the finish line feeling, the sense of accomplishment, and the incredible support you get on the day from the amazing volunteers and other competitors.
We honoured our Veterans last month for ANZAC day, which must be a special day for you. Could you share a bit about your service in the RAAF and in Afghanistan?
ANZAC day is definitely an emotional day for me. It was great to be able to march in Port this year with the other Veterans and have the community support in the town. I spent 4 years in the RAAF and 7.5 months in Tarin Kowt, Afghanistan in 2012-2013. We were in the security role on base as well as an outside the wire patrol. It was winter so it got down to -13 degrees celsius which was a good thing because summer is fighting season over there!
Summerland Health does a lot to give back to the community, things like toy drives at Christmas, why is it so important for you to be active in the local community with initiatives like this?
We love to give back to the community and feel that it’s vital in any town, but especially a smaller town like Port Macquarie and Wauchope. We have done Christmas toy drives for the Salvos both years that we have been open and handed over more than 300 toys last year which is incredible for the kids in Port. We sponsor the Port Macquarie Triathlon Club, Wauchope Blues Junior Rugby League Club as a way to encourage health and fitness in the community. We offer discounts for members of these clubs, current and ex-serving defence force members and their families, police, firefighters and ambulance personnel as a way to thank them for their service to the community and country as well.
Have you got any other adventures on the horizon this year you can share with us?
We are always looking for new and exciting adventures, however at this point it’s just focusing on the arrival of our boy and providing the best care we can at Summerland Health.
Thanks Dr Hoey.
Hi Chris, can you tell us a bit about your background and your connection to the Port Macquarie area?
My family made the move from Newcastle over 30 years ago now and I've been living here ever since. Raising my kids on the Mid North Coast is awesome, honestly, the lifestyle here is unbeatable. Running my own business in the area keeps me connected with the community, which I love being a part of.
When did you first start playing footy and what got you hooked on the sport?
I started playing footy when I was just a kid, joining the under 7's team for Wauchope. From that moment on, I was hooked. I transitioned into senior footy with Wauchope, eventually cracking 100 games in first grade. For me it wasn't just about the games; it was the mateship that kept me coming back. There's something special about being part of a team, working

together towards a common goal. You're not just playing for yourself; you're playing for your mates. That sense of responsibility keeps you on your toes, pushing yourself to do better next time.
You have been playing with Beechwood for some time now, can you tell us about your start with the club and what is special to you about representing this club?
Absolutely. My journey with Beechwood actually began back in 2010/2011 when I joined as a captain coach. I loved the experience, but I made the decision to return to Wauchope to achieve my goal of reaching 100 games there.
club as a player. By 2018, I had taken on coaching responsibilities again. Since then, I've been consistently playing alongside the team.
In 2017, I found myself drawn back to the club as a player. By 2018, I had taken on coaching responsibilities again. Since then, I’ve been consistently playing alongside the team.
One thing I cherish about Beechwood is the sense of mateship that forms within the team. Every year, we welcome new players into our ranks, and with them, new mates. We're all brought together by our shared love for the game. When you step onto the field, you know that everyone beside you is there because they genuinely want to be. That's what makes representing Beechwood such a privilege for me.

Congratulations on celebrating your 100th game! Are there going to be any special celebrations around this
milestone?
Thank you! Yep, reaching my 100th game is certainly a significant milestone for me, and we've got something special planned for the occasion. This game aligns with our annual charity round, making it even more meaningful. This year, we'll be supporting the Mark Hughes Foundation, an organisation that is special to me. The opportunity to combine my milestone game with a cause that means so much to me is really special, and I’m excited to celebrate this moment with my teammates, supporters, and the wider community. What have been some highlights for you over your time playing footy?
There have been so many great moments throughout my journey with the club. Obviously, reaching the milestone of 100 games is right up there at the top, and playing in two grand finals has been pretty special.
It’s not just about the games for me, it's about the people. Making lifelong mates through footy has been one of the most rewarding aspects.
And then there's the opportunity to give back. Coaching and mentoring the young players as they come through the ranks has been a passion of mine. Watching them grow and develop into skilled footballers is a highlight in itself. It's a reminder of the legacy we're building here at the club, and I'm proud to be a part of it.
The club is also doing some fundraising for the Mark Hughes Foundation (MHF). Can you tell us about the Foundation for those that don’t know of it?
The Mark Hughes Foundation is dedicated to raising funds and awareness for brain cancer research through fundraising initiatives, including events like our charity round. The foundation strives to support research projects aimed at finding better treatments and ultimately a cure for brain cancer. It's a cause that resonates deeply with our club and community, and we're proud to do our part in supporting such a worthy cause.
It’s not just about the games for me, it’s about the people. Making lifelong mates through footy has been one of the most rewarding aspects.
How will you be raising funds for the MHF and why is it important to the club to support this foundation?
We're doing our best to raise funds for the Mark Hughes Foundation (MHF) in a few ways. We’ve created Mark Hughes’ jerseys, which our players will wear during our charity round game. After the match, these jerseys will be auctioned off at the Beechwood Hotel, with all proceeds going directly to the MHF.
We’ll also be hosting raffles throughout the day, and we're incredibly grateful to
the MHF for donating a signed NSW Origin jersey, which will also be up for auction. Supporting the MHF holds significant importance to our club for numerous reasons. Brain cancer is a disease that has impacted many individuals within our community, and we're dedicated to doing our part to support vital research efforts. By rallying together and backing the MHF, we're not only raising funds but also spreading hope and solidarity to those affected by this illness. It's a cause that resonates deeply with our club's values of community support and making a positive difference, and we're honoured to play a part in supporting such a worthy cause.
How can we find out more about these events or show our support?
Our charity round is set to kick off at 2:30pm on the 6th of July at the Beechwood Oval. We welcome everyone to come down and join in the day. Cheer on the team, and most importantly, help us raise vital funds for brain cancer research. The jersey auction will kick off around 6:30pm at the Beechwood Hotel, we’d love to see you there!
Thanks Chris.
You own and operate Growers Market, what inspired you to purchase this business together?
Ultimately, the inspiration to buy a business like Growers Market came from a desire to combine our passions with our ambitions, while also making a positive impact on the community. It was a decision driven by both our passions, guided by our shared values and vision for the future.
How do you balance your personal and professional lives when running a business together?
Balancing our personal and professional lives while running a business together can be challenging at times, but we've found that communication is key. We make a conscious effort to separate work discussions from our personal time and ensure that we have designated periods for both. Trust and respect for each other's roles within the business also plays a crucial role in maintaining harmony between our personal and professional lives.
We are blessed with such a fantastic team here at Growers, we are able to take short breaks regularly which is so important to maintain work/life balance.
What are the advantages of having a family owned and operated business?
We have been together for over 20 years and to work together in our own business is a dream come true, we love our business.
We have two young children and love being able to share successes, challenges, and milestones together.
Family members can complement each other's strengths and skills, creating a strong foundation for the business's success. Owning a family business can offer greater flexibility and control over work schedules, allowing more time to spend together.
Can you share a memorable success story or achievement that you've experienced together in your business?
Purchasing Growers Market is definitely our biggest achievement to date. We have now been driving the bus for over 2 1/2 years and it has been such a fantastic journey.
We feel like the greats of Growers Market help us every day to make the right decisions for the business and our local community.
Being the third local family to own Growers Market after its establishment in 1975, it is an absolute privilege to provide quality fruit and vegetables to the Mid North Coast and we look forward to continuing for many years to come.

You own and operate Meg & Me Boutique and Espresso, what inspired you to run this business together?
Our “inspiration” was initially borne out of necessity. We relocated to Port from Hobart back in 2010 and after deciding to call Port home for the foreseeable future and we needed to find work. After meeting some fabulous locals within minutes (literally) of hitting town, Ant was employed as a barista at the newly established Holy Goat Coffee Lounge at the Private Hospital. I fluffed around for a little while until an opportunity arose to purchase a tiny little business called Meg + Me, and the rest is history. That was 12 years ago. How do you balance your personal and professional lives when running a business together?
Whether you own a business or not, finding balance in life can be a constant juggle. For us, we have found that having hobbies “on the outside” has been helpful. We both enjoy our large garden, and Ant is an exceptional veggie grower and marmalade maker (he loves sharing his tips and produce with his customers) while I enjoy making homemade sourdough on a regular basis, so simply focussing on the little things helps. We also try and schedule in at least one decent holiday together a year, where we can simply remove ourselves physically and mentally from the day to day elements of the business.
What are the advantages of having a family-owned and operated business?
There are so many advantages! When you are both (or all) working towards the same ultimate goal, it is easy to support each other when times are tough, simply because you know exactly what it takes each and every day to keep things moving forward. The biggest personal advantage for me, is that I get to enjoy a Meg + Me coffee made by one of our town’s very best baristas in the business, at home… every single day!
Can you share a memorable success story or achievement that you’ve experienced together in your business?
I think our most memorable success story, was the day we incorporated the espresso bar into the Boutique. It had been a very rough induction (baptism of fire) into the life of business ownership for me for the 18 months leading up to welcoming Ant into our business, but since that day we have not looked back, not even once. Together is definitely better!

You own and operate Twelve, what inspired you to run this business together? In 2017 we left our government jobs in Darwin, NT and used our personal savings to purchase our business so that we could relocate our young family back home to Port Macquarie. We both had a vision to create a lifestyle business after many years of shift work, so with everything on the line, we were determined to make it work!
How do you balance your personal and professional lives when running a business together? Our business has been practicing a 4-day work week for 18 months now. This was a proactive choice we made to ensure that we were prioritising the balanced lifestyle we envisioned for our family and our team. Our “long weekends” ensure that we are filling our personal cups with quality family time. Our weekends are spent cheering along at the kids’ sports, enjoying our small acreage property, camping, or on the road exploring the beautiful Mid North Coast region.
What are the advantages of having a family-owned and operated business? The best part is having the ability to go against the grain of traditional workplaces and expectations. We are growing a team of dedicated professionals with a strong workplace culture that we are extremely proud of. We are a business that is more than just a “service” and therefore our customers have been our greatest advocates for all the right reasons. It has been an extremely humbling experience to have a strong return customer base of locals supporting locals!
Can you share a memorable success story or achievement that you’ve experienced together in your business? We have proudly worked alongside REDARC as RED Network Members for the Port Macquarie Region since 2021 and have recently been announced as the REDNetwork Advisory Council Representatives for New South Wales. The REDNetwork has exceeded industry standards for customer experience, and we are extremely proud to be playing an active role in the overall success of the REDNetwork. This achievement is a great opportunity to increase the merit and professional visibility of the auto electrical trade within the REDNetwork. Our tradesmen are experts in the area and are committed to a long-term career. We want to ensure we can sustain a steadfast position to maintain the trade’s viability within the greater automotive industry. TWELVE
Myself, (Drewe), and my wife, Holly made the decision to move our family up to the Port Macquarie area 4 years ago when we were presented with the opportunity to start up GJ Gardner Homes in Port Macquarie.
We were living on the South Coast of NSW with our 7 children, and right in the thick of the COVID days. We were in the early stages of discussing building our own home with GJ Gardner Homes Batemans Bay on land we had purchased, and it was through this process the opportunity for us to own and operate our own GJ Gardner Homes was presented. Having over 30 years experience working in the building industry we knew it could definitely be something I could put my expertise and passion into and make it our own.
Shortly after we started discussions with GJ Gardner Homes head office, it didn’t take us long to conclude that the brand aligns with all our personal and business values and we came to the decision to make the move and put our all into this. The following months we put a lot of work into securing our place as a GJ Gardner Homes Franchisee. Locked down within our home, with all 7 children, as schools weren’t operating during this period of COVID, the countless Zoom meetings with kids running around in the background, we eventually finalised everything and made our way to Port Macquarie. Setting up a franchise via Zoom was definitely a different experience. We quickly realised that the only right time to begin was NOW. All in, we set up a shipping container and before we knew it we were selling houses. Here we are 4 years on, with an exceptional design studio and display home, knowing we made the right decision.
Owning our own business and managing such a large family, while effortful, we manage well by working as a team. We understand that there needs to be balance in managing all aspects of our busy lives, and so working together to achieve balance is important to us. Being able to work around our family and having something that the whole family can get behind, take an interest in, and be excited about means a lot to us. Some of our children have shown an interest in one day coming on board in the business in one way or another. When looking back on our success so far in owning GJ Gardner Homes, it is the everyday things that we choose to celebrate. At the end of every week myself and Holly like to take a moment to just acknowledge what we have achieved. Handing over each house we build and getting to see the joy it brings our clients is always a measure of success for us. We are always
striving for growth and continued success, and will continue to work hard at this.
You own and operate Berry Financial Services, what inspired you to purchase this business?
When you leave school, people often say, “Do something you love, and you’ll never work a day in your life.” This philosophy resonates deeply with us. It’s why Lucas became a Financial Planner. We have the privilege of walking through life with our clients, whether they are in their 30s and eager to get set up for the future, or later in life planning their retirement. We truly love what we do. After gaining valuable experience at Berry Financial Services, we were presented with the opportunity to become the business owners in 2018. This decision was an easy one. It allows us to continue working closely with our clients and supporting them on their journey through life.
How do you balance your personal and professional lives when running a business together?
It’s all about finding harmony amidst the hustle. For us, it starts with clear communication and mutual respect. We carve out dedicated time for both work and family, ensuring that each aspect receives the attention it deserves. Flexibility is key, allowing us to adapt to the needs of our business and our loved ones. We support each other’s passions and commitments outside of work, understanding that a happy home life fuels success in the workplace. It can be a challenge at times, but with a shared vision, we journey together, embracing every step along the way.

What are the advantages of having a family-owned and operated business?
What do you enjoy the most about not only working but living in a place like Port Macquarie?
When family members genuinely enjoy each other’s company and share aligned values and priorities, it fosters a positive workplace culture, which is paramount for us. This camaraderie and shared sense of purpose naturally extend to our team, creating a supportive and cohesive work environment. This unity within our team then enhances the overall experience for our clients. As a small family-owned business, we prioritise building strong relationships with our clients, valuing trust, care, and genuineness. These qualities are ingrained in our business approach, allowing us to provide personalised, reliable, and high-quality services while fostering longterm connections with our clients.
Port Macquarie is such a beautiful place to live, offering so much to our family. It has great schools, plenty of things to do on weekends in town or adventuring out in the hinterland looking for hidden gems. We are certainly lucky to be able to work and raise our family in such a beautiful part of the world.
Is there anything you wish to add? We would like to congratulate the Finalists in the Financial Services category NAB – Port Macquarie, BCU and Newcastle Permanent. Thank you :)
You own and operate Got ya Back Productions, what inspired you to open this business together?
We established Got Ya Back upon moving back to the region in 2017. We left Sydney at the height of both of our performance careers and within the first year of us moving back, Tim was still touring nationally as Peter Pan and I was driving up and down to Sydney almost every weekend to perform. We wanted to build Got Ya Back because throughout our experiences within the national arts industry, we saw production companies building great shows; however, the experience working for the company was not as great. We strive to make productions that are not just excellent to watch, but an excellent experience to build too. Tim was also a little tired of auditioning for/performing on the next big production, or story, to come out of the UK or USA. We felt by moving to Port we had a better chance at building new Australian touring productions and stories, which we’ve proudly achieved and continue to do so. How do you balance your personal and professional lives when running this business together?
When we first established Got Ya Back it was difficult to work out the balance. We would both be working late at night, then chatting about the plan for the next day before bed. This quickly became exhausting, and not healthy for the both of us. Seven years in, we’re now pretty strict about work chat around the house (despite how much we actually enjoy it). We’ve found it important to do so for the sake of our own lives and our kids too. At times it’s hard to completely disregard what’s going on with the business, but it’s essential for the business to have any longevity. If we loose energy, inevitably so does the business.
What are the advantages of having a family-owned and operated business?
Tim and I have been together for 19 years (married for 11) and a big part of why we got together was because we have similar core values. The Got Ya Back philosophy is one we’ve both held within our personal relationships long before starting the business. Another advantage is that the business has thrown us some wacky, unexpected and, at times, incredible experiences but at every turn we’ve been able to share a glance at each other and put it down as ‘one to tell the grandkids’. Can you share a memorable success story or achievement that you’ve experienced together in your business?
Firstly, to see how many members of our community, of all ages, coming along to our little theatre is quite overwhelming. As a community we should be so proud of some of the young people who are growing up here and the talent they have, generous, hard working, caring for others and talented to boot! We feel very blessed to build shows with them.

For more than 25 years, Port Crystal Cleaners has been the number one residential and commercial cleaner of choice in Port Macquarie and surrounds. Brothers Daniel and Luke speak about their thriving business.
Hi Dan and Luke, please tell us a little about the services Port Crystal Cleaners provides?
Port Crystal Cleaners offer all aspects of commercial cleaning, carpet and upholstery cleaning and also now specialised rug washing services.
I understand you have a dedicated rug washing plant on-site in Munster Street and offer a convenient drop off and pick up collection for people wanting to deep clean and restore their rugs.
That’s right. We have recently opened a state of the art, dedicated rug washing facility at 32 Munster Street in Port Macquarie. This site is equipped with fully automated rug washing equipment imported from Poland
and is regarded as one of the most efficient and advanced facilities in Australia. We really take pride in providing the best results for our customers and to deliver first class customer service.
We specialise in the washing of all kinds of rugs from machine made synthetic rugs to hand knotted silk rugs. Our 8 stage, full immersion washing process is one of the most comprehensive in the country and our clients are loving the results we can achieve. The whole process generally only takes a few days and the rug is returned completely dry. You are welcome to drop the rug in anytime without a booking or we also offer free home pick up and delivery. We service the whole Mid North Coast from Lake Macquarie all the
way to Coffs Harbour.
Brendan, who is our lead rug washing technician is one of the most experienced in the country and his attention to detail and knowledge really sets us apart from the rest. The results that we can achieve here are like nothing that has ever been offered in this area and our valued clients are absolutely loving it.
Romer Locks is your family owned and operated local locksmith business based in Port Macquarie and servicing the Mid North Coast, specialising in locks, keys, safes and automotive keys.
Please tell us about some of your most popular services? Generally we are busy in all areas that we provide, however we do seem to be cutting and programming a lot of car keys lately, upgrading peoples locks on their houses to increase security and supplying and installing more home safes as well. We do get a lot of enquiries regarding hardware for renovations or new builds and we are getting some new displays coming soon for our Tradco and Iver range which is exciting, so we’ll get the word out when they arrive. We
love helping businesses with restricted systems that maintain key control for the business and any commercial hardware we can also do.
What can be a common turnaround time if we urgently need a new key cut? We strive to get our jobs completed very quickly, so for a regular house key we can do them quickly on the spot, and with our car keys we aim to do them on the spot if that’s possible, or at least same day, but occasionally we need the car to program the keys in, in which case we might book a time that suits.
What are you most proud of business wise? Romer Locks has been operating in Port Macquarie since 2007, but before that Anthea and I started out in Armidale late 1999, so I’m definitely proud to say that we’ve been in business coming up to 25 years now and I’ve been a locksmith for over 30 years. We do really concentrate on looking after our customers, and though we always welcome new customers, we make a point of looking after our long-term customers and I think this is why our business has been around for so long.

Congratulations to you on your win at this year's Business Awards. This is back to back wins for you in this category, what does that mean to you?
So this second win for us as a business really means that we've actually found a way to connect with our business community and our clients. It's also shown us that what we're doing is actually valued within our area. What do you believe are the key factors that contributed to your business winning this award?
My business motto is that “It doesn't cost anything to be nice.” I treat everyone with the same respect, no matter who they are, where they're from or what job they present us with, because at the end of the day everyone deserves to feel valued and I thoroughly enjoy spending time to make sure everyone feels appreciated. There is enough for everyone out there. We just try to be available to listen to our customers when they need it.
In today's market, how important is it to support local businesses such as your own, and in return,
how important is customer feedback and satisfaction?
Supporting small local businesses like ours means that we can give opportunities to our children including my 4 parrots that come to work with us everyday! Hopefully we can share more opportunities with our local community through the opportunity of future employment and investing back into community organisations like SELF SEEN. Without their support I would not have had the confidence to trust in myself as an individual to carry on. Connection to community has played an integral part of our business operations in these recent times. Customer feedback and satisfaction leads to consumer confidence which gains more interest in our services. How do you envision your business evolving over the next five years? Over the next 5 years we are looking to diversify into the home and industrial surface protection sectors, meaning that we can protect more than just vehicles and trucks. We'll also be able to assist in anti-graffiti, anti corrosion, stain protection and much much more for nearly any hard surface, and maybe an extra parrot or two?

Congratulations to you Ben and your team on not only winning one, but two awards at this year's Business Awards. Tell us the two awards you won and what it means to you to be recognised in these categories. C2C Sport feels humbled by our customers voting for us and satisfied that the judges agree. C2C Sport really does take the heavy lifting out of uniforms and merchandise for sports clubs, schools and associations.
The first award was the Innovation category for our Clear View Size and Fit Guide technology. The guide uses accurate body size 3D avatars and actual garment patterns to drape transparent fabrics. We then apply a heat map to show the tightness of fit, length and other details to make it easier to view and choose the correct apparel sizes.
The second award is for Retail of 6+ employees. Our Locker Room service enables sports organisations to provide their members with a more convenient merchandise and uniform
ordering process saving countless hours of vounteer time.
It's the combination of managed e-commerce, 18hr a day customer service, 24x7 click-andcollect convenience, all courier options and a physical store in Port Macquarie.
How important has your team been in achieving these awards? Our team is all important. They genuinely care about reducing waste and adding value at every process to our customers, suppliers and internally.
What do you believe are the key factors that contributed to your business winning your 2 awards? Believing in our staff and investing in solutions that reduce waste and add value for our community and customers.
Digitising our business so we are agile and able to scale and sell globally.
In today's market, how important is it to support local businesses such as C2C Sport and in return how important is customer feedback and satisfaction? Local support is critical to be able to employ locally and invest locally for greater community benefit.
We learn from our mistakes and use the feedback as learning opportunities.
How do you envision your business evolving over the next five years? We accept that change is inevitable and therefore agility and the ability to change are necessary. Technology change and globalisation will increase, so we are preparing for it.
He is on a mission to educate one million people in verbal self defence and confidence and has already impacted thousands of young people across the country to deal with conflict and bullying. He will be hitting the Luminosity main stage this year in July sharing his strategies for self worth and success. Matt, what moment/s inspired you to take on this gargantuan task?
I’ve been bullied for my race and abilities,
adopted, moved 13+ times, saw my Mum struggle and I can honestly say the hand I was dealt was pretty average at times. But what’s the alternative? You’ve got to play them the best you can.
I believe your pain and purpose are linked. Pain shows you what you don't want. Newton's Third Law states that for every action, there is an equal and opposite reaction. Similarly, pain reveals you can create a life that's the opposite of your pain.
I realised this through mentorship. Someone
Matt is an accomplished entrepreneur, media creative and influencer who has built an impactful career through empowering others with the power of words. Adopted as small boy from Korea, Matt has overcome adversity to pursue purpose and possibility on his personal and professional journey here in Australia as Founder of Social Kungfu & KYU Media.
saw something better in me and gave me a new perspective. We often forget how powerful our words and belief in each other can be.
You are often quoted saying "Words Create Worlds" creating life or death, they are used as weapons, or for healing wounds. How do you work with young people to empower them and give them agency to counter conflict and go on to live the life of their dreams?
People forget opinions come from four groups: Strangers/Peers, Family/Friends, Yourself, and Spirituality/Philosophy. The big problem is many think there's only one voice and ignore their own, causing huge insecurity.
Remember, it's your duty to defend yourself and see your value. You give value to things, proving you already have it. You can't give what you don't have.
Born in Korea and adopted by a loving Australian family your own journey has taken many twists and turns. You now work for major brands and clients to include MJ Bale, Layne Beachley, The Awake Academy, American Express and have launched The Business Academy with Boost Juice Founder Janine Allis
What has driven you to succeed and live a life of purpose and possibility when others may have shied away from the challenge? The pain of my childhood and having very little drove me to achieve huge success. That motivation works for a long time until you realise there’s a point where you don’t need to run anymore - you’ve arrived, and it's time to stop striving.
Now, I focus on genuinely helping people stand out from a place of love, not a place of chasing worth. A lot of adoptees have struggled with that.
You are a master of branding and digital storytelling and we can regularly see you adding some signature MP style and fun to your projects. Is there a particular project, client or event that stands out in your mind as a game changer for you?
Everything for me is about the message. I have loved working with Layne Beachley, who is full of wisdom and experience. We've spent years in deep conversations and sessions about how we can help people love themselves more. Sharing her stories and broadcasting them in a relevant way through her Academy and media is incredibly fulfilling because she is a wonderful human.
What has been your most valuable attribute as an entrepreneur that has
enabled you to bring SKF and KYU MEDIA to life and make a true difference?
Many treat their dreams like a casual date, without real commitment. You must decide to go all in if you want your life to be where you want it to be.
Having a clear message and mission. Know your lane. You will make very little impact if you do not find your lane and commit to it. This is branding 101: don’t try to be everything to everyone. Focus on who you are serving, why it matters to attract the right thing for your goals! Social Kung Fu is all about training 1 million Australian students in verbal self defence. KYU Media is all about helping companies and individuals craft their own story and make it into a marketing tool to reach the world.
What has been your greatest challenge in delivering the mission of SKF?
Patience. It’s a huge mission and it requires doing things right. We are right now raising capital to build our platform so it can be the mode of transport to reach the masses. How instrumental have sages and critics been in your evolution of your career/ business ? What is the most valuable lesson they taught you?
Your potential cannot be fully unlocked by yourself alone. Other people hold the keys to
unlocking things within you. One important lesson I've learned in business is to ask the question, "What do I want from this?"
Often, business people feel pressured to appear wealthy and to constantly climb the ladder from six to seven figures, then to eight, and even to nine, just because it's expected. However, true success is knowing when enough is enough. You are bringing your Matt Purcell magic to the main stage of Luminosity this year. What do you hope to bring to the Summit theme of Purpose & Possibility for the 500 leaders this year in July?
The most uncopiable part of who you are is your story. Stop disqualifying yourself. Every worthwhile pursuit in life requires you to stop mucking around.
FOCUS. Many treat their dreams like a casual date, without real commitment. You must decide to go all in if you want your life to be where you want it to be.
If you had one wish for young people today what would it be?
Start treating yourself as someone who matters.
Thanks Matt.

CATHOLIC SCHOOLS OFFICE, HASTINGS REGION
As students prepare for their exams, and the end of Year 10 and Year 12 approaches, many students are preparing for a significant transition. This transition, often filled with excitement and anticipation, can also bring feelings of nervousness. As a parent or guardian, supporting your teenager during this period is crucial. Whether your teenager is considering furthering their education, gaining employment or trade qualifications, or exploring the world, there’s a lot to consider and plan. Many resources are available to help young people and their parents/guardians navigate this path. Helpful Resources
The first step for a family should be their school’s Career Support Staff. Catholic schools in the Hastings region employ trained staff to provide expert guidance to help students navigate their future options. The dual knowledge of students’ skills and interests paired with sound knowledge of the options available means staff are well placed to advise.
MyFuture is a career information service that offers online resources to help parents/guardians to encourage their young person to explore options, plan career pathways, and discover possibilities. Young people can use the website to identify their interests, build their career profile, and explore careers and employment opportunities in Australia’s key industries. Leaving School - Services Australia provides
helpful information for young people choosing their next adventure, whether it’s further study, entering a trade or full-time work, or even if they’re not sure what’s next.
My Skills is a great place to explore vocational education, training courses and organisations. It provides information about the skills that are in demand and helps young people explore industries they might be interested in.
SkillsRoad offers advice for young people and their parents/guardians on starting post-school life. The interactive Career Quiz, Jobs Board, and Job Fit Test are helpful in seeking to find a career that best suits their skills and strengths.
Year13 recognises that no two post-school journeys are the same, aiming to improve the health and happiness of young Australians by providing advice and information on work, study, travel, and life after secondary school.
LifeLauncher, a website from the NSW Government, helps young people identify job and education options that best match their strengths and personalities.
The transition from secondary school to adulthood is a time of change and it’s important to provide support and guidance as they navigate this milestone. Here are some tips for having these important discussions.
1. Ask Open-Ended Questions: Encourage your teenager to share their thoughts and feelings by asking questions like, “What are you
most excited about after Year 12?” or “What concerns you the most about the future?”
2. Share Your Own Experiences: Let your teenager know that transitions are a normal part of life by sharing your own stories of change. For example, “When I finished school, I wasn’t sure what I wanted to do either.”
3. Encourage Exploration: Support your teenager’s curiosity by discussing different options. Ask questions like, “Have you considered any careers that align with your hobbies?” or “What subjects do you enjoy the most?”
4. Offer Reassurance: Let your teenager know it’s okay to feel uncertain. Remind them, “It’s normal to feel unsure about what’s next. The important thing is to explore your interests and stay open to possibilities.”
5. Discuss Resources Together: Explore the available resources together and ask, “Which of these websites looks interesting to you?” This collaborative approach helps your teenager feel supported.
6. Create a Plan: Help your teenager feel more in control by creating a plan together. Ask, “What are some steps we can take to explore your options further?”

THE GUTS, GRIT AND GROUNDWORK OF REMARKABLE REGIONAL ENTREPRENEURS, INNOVATORS, LEADERS AND GAME CHANGERS.
Six years ago Lisa & Todd Richardson were riding high on the success of their heart project and homegrown business LVs on Clarence - a bustling cafe where farm fresh produce and wholesome delicious dishes stood as the cornerstone of their funky paddock to plate experience. Regulars were le wondering “where to next “ when the much loved hospitality couple sold the business and announced a retreat from cafe life.
Later that year, Team Richardson announced their new venture as farmers, with the rise of Chef2Farmer, a chance to get hands-on creating their very own sustainable, chemical-free, pasture-raised produce that is not only good for you and the environment, it is connecting our community as they join the journey along the way.
Who or what inspired the drive and determination within you to take the chance on this regenerative agriculture journey and change the game from chef’s clogs to farm boots?
Being in the cafe, we found ourselves seeking locally grown produce, but we felt that all the producers would end up selling to Sydney markets, and we couldn’t keep a consistent supply. We started buying local eggs which were in a chicken caravan and soon decided to purchase our own van and flock to supply us in the cafe. After share farming for 12 months or so we made the big move and bought our own farm!
At this stage we didn’t know too much about regenerative agriculture, however we valued local and chemical free produce. Todd remembers the day he was scooping fertilisers into the spreader, he was masked and gloved for protection against the chemicals and just felt wrong - ‘Why am I putting this on the land from which our animals graze and in turn that I am feeding my family!’ The fertilisers had no signs of life, it was pearl white and strong in chemical smell. That was the big turning point in our farming methods. Soon after Todd enrolled in a Holistic Management Course with Brian Welburg and learnt all about managing land holistically. Brian commented
that we were one of the fastest students to implement changes as we jumped in and bought the energiser and fencing to start moving the cows.
What was your vision and how have you worked together as a family to stay true to that and achieve the dream?
Our vision is ever-changing and progressive, but at the core of this vision is soil health, animal well-being and accessible, healthy local food. Our family has made huge adjustments to achieve this dream. Lisa and the kids had never lived on the land prior and the changes to our lifestyle were huge, but so worth it. The farm provides so many opportunities for the kids, they have freedom to test out their own enterprises. Laiken,14 has started his own sheep enterprise and we cannot wait to add his lamb to our selection.
What has been the most exciting and surprising part of the journey as farmers so far?
After the daily, (sometimes twice) cattle moves, the endless chicken and pig moves which we have been doing now for 6 years, we are seeing massive changes to the soil, pastures and the wildlife and biodiversity. Initially, we didn’t see a worm, the soil was grey and dry and the forest was thick with lantana and overgrowth.
We now have so many species of birds, quail. ducks, snakes, worms, insects and dung beetles.
Our soils are rich and smell sweet and alive, we have reclaimed so much land to make our business stronger. Another highlight would be the other farmers we have met along the way who share the love for regenerative agriculture, and will remain lifelong friends. You have ensured that you have brought the community along on the journey through your presence on social media and getting foodies and “townies” down onto the farm through the farmgate tours experience. Can you share how that began and the impact it has had on those who have experienced it?
We absolutely love having people come and share our farm with us. We have welcomed over 1000 people to the farm including schools, Hastings Farm Gate, private tours, community groups and open days. We feel that our visitors verify us, they are our certification to good farming practices and being open and honest with customers is what is missing with the ‘big’ guys as food labelling is very misleading. Seeing the kids in nature and learning about where food comes from, all while having fun collecting eggs, patting and feeding the cows and pigs is a joy!
Our very first tour was with the Hastings Farm Gate three years ago, and that set the seed for sharing the farm and making connections with people, and them to us and with their food!
What has been the most challenging experience for you coming from running a kitchen and hospitality business to driving results on the farm. How is “success” in this space different?
A successful kitchen is a busy one, with a team behind you, out here on the farm it’s just us. The change from having a team of 20 to share the load to just us two was a huge adjustment and challenge mentally. Knowing what we could achieve in a day at LV’s was so different to what we would achieve on the farm in a day.
Being farmers, we are also at the mercy of the weather conditions, animal behaviours and the isolation of not having potential customers walking past your shopfront.
Success is very different in this space. Success on the farm is a cover crop sprouting, newborn piglets, a worm, a new species of grass coming from the dormant seed banks below. We felt success in the cafe from how busy we were, but out here we are trying to be less busy and slow down and enjoy our kids!
Your secret to success has always been passion, determination, approachability and hard work - which of these is the most important and why?
Without the passion and enjoying what you do, you won’t keep trying! Farming definitely is a hard career choice with a lot of unknowns
researching, trying new things and improving your business. This passion also transfers to our customers who can feel inspired by us to make changes to how they feed their families or manage their own land. Passion builds a community of other passionate people who can help motivate you too!
You are both in gumboots and all for our community participating in community initiatives such the Real Food Markets & Hastings Farm Gate Tour to contribute to the connection and culture of our community. What is your favourite project and why?
We are at the Weekly Real Food Markets each Tuesday and honestly this is our favourite day of the week! We have grown so much over the past two years and just love seeing our regulars who are more like friends now. We have also seen our monthly delivery boxes grow significantly.
What advice would you give those emerging entrepreneurs who want to flip the game, follow their heart and start in a completely new direction? Do your research, test your numbers! But after all that, be fluent with how the business grows or takes shape. Don’t be set on your first idea, take the journey as it comes and be willing to accept the changes.
It seems you can’t turn around lately without seeing stories of economic doom and gloom, cost of living pressures and collapsing companies. One way we see our clients impacted by the current environment is through insolvencies in the construction industry. There are few more heartbreaking situations than seeing someone’s life savings committed to building their dream home, before everything comes to a screeching halt.
Figures published by ASIC suggest there was a 20% increase in insolvency events in the construction industry last year, and things don’t appear to be slowing down. There have been 2,439 insolvencies in the construction industry this financial year alone. That means a lot of disappointed customers with their builds left in limbo.
There are many reasons why this is occurring, but the combination of rising interest rates, large cost increases and supply chain delays for materials, and the tax man recommencing collection activities after a COVID-inspired holiday have all had an effect. When the money runs out, the fallout is widespread. Suppliers and tradies are usually left unpaid, and customers are left with a half-finished build, which can only result in cost
overruns and delays. Unfortunately, there is no silver bullet – if your builder goes bust, you will be left with a headache.
So as a consumer, what can you do to avoid this situation?
Your best bet is to make sure you are engaging a reputable and established builder, and you do your due diligence on them. If they have a reputation for being a slow payer, it may indicate cash flow issues. Another warning sign is underquoting – if a quote is too good to be true, beware! Often problems arise when a builder is running on fine margins, and if they aren’t making any money the potential for problems to arise increases.
disappearance or can’t honour their warranty obligations, but is clearly very useful in the current economic circumstances.
Your best bet is to make sure you are engaging a reputable and established builder, and you do your due diligence on them.
The problem with HBC is that it only applies in the specific circumstances described above. Issues that relate to poor workmanship or delay or other failures may require a claim to be made to NCAT (NSW Civil and Administrative Tribunal), or in higher courts. The costs associated with these types of disputes can be significant, and in many cases you will be left to rectify issues yourself using an award of compensation.
You also have legal protections. For jobs valued at $20,000 including GST, the builder or contractor must provide you with Home Building Compensation insurance. Cover from this insurance (HBC) is only available to you if your builder/contractor is unable to complete building work or fix defects because of insolvency, licence suspension, death or
Rather than try and rescue the situation it is far better to establish a good relationship with your builder and work through issues collaboratively. A solid foundation is the most important part of any build – the alternative is a house built on sand.

When finding a property to move into, there is a large element of emotional connection to the purchase. You consider the comfortability of your life in the new house, you picture your family over for dinner, kids playing in the pool and the distance to your favourite coffee shop. When we are purchasing our home to live in, we tend to focus on our wants and there is usually a clear disparity from the property that we want to the property we can afford. With the above in mind, I thought it fitting I discuss a trend that has become increasingly popular - Rentvesting.
With higher interest rates and increased property prices, getting into the market has become increasingly expensive. Rentvesting is a way to get into the property market purchasing in a lower-priced area without having to give up the benefits of the lifestyle you want. This means that you can continue to live in the house you want whilst purchasing where you can afford, perhaps in outer suburbs you would have otherwise disregarded.
Now let’s look at this in practical terms. According to realestate.com the median property price for a 3 bedroom house in Port Macquarie between May 2023 & April 2024 was $775,000. Say you were going to purchase this property to live in and had a 20% deposit plus costs, your
mortgage would be approximately $3,797 per month. Compare this to the median rental for a 3 bedroom home in Port Macquarie being $575 per week during the same period ($2,492 per month). Simply, if you were renting this property, rather then buying it, you would be left with a spare $1,305 to invest.
There are a number of considerations to make before deciding if this option is right for you. Two main considerations being the first home buyer schemes and incentives that you may be forgoing if you have not owned property before. The second is the risks associated with rentvesting. Some of these include but aren’t limited to; potential interest rate increases, liquidity of real estate, poor performance and changes to your circumstances.
1. Saving for your deposit
A great place to start is creating a budget taking into account your income and your outgoings to determine how much you can afford to save. This will also allow you to estimate the time it will take you to achieve your desired deposit. A good rule of thumb for an investment property, to avoid unwanted lenders mortgage insurance is to save 20% deposit plus your stamp duty and legal costs.
2. Find your property.
If you have decided that rentvesting is right for you, it’s a good idea to first engage the
services of a mortgage broker in order to get a pre-approval. A pre-approval gives you the confidence to make an offer on a property knowing that your finance will be approved. Having a pre-approval also gives real estate agents confidence that you are a legitimate buyer.
It is also a good idea to speak to real estate agents or buyers’ agents to help you secure a property. By having a good relationship with an agent, you may have access to properties even before they come on to the market.
Work towards your next property.
Once you have built up some equity in your first property you may want to purchase again to continue to grow your property portfolio. The aim with rentvesting is fast tracking wealth, however it is most effective if you are reinvesting the cash, not spending it. Remembering to not over extend yourself when purchasing your first property will assist you when you are wanting to buy again. Just because the bank says you can borrow a certain amount, it does not mean that you should.
This article is not intended to provide advice. If you require advice on the potential tax benefits or to understand if rentvesting is right for you, you may want to speak with your accountant and financial advisor. If you have decided that rentvesting is right for you then reach out and I can help find the right lending solution to suit your needs.
Winter has arrived - it brings with it some exciting events which we are looking forward to but first we will recap May.
We started the month with our first floral artistry workshop expertly led by Kath Peck from Bourne St Blooms. Those who attended had a lovely night with wine, cheese, music, good company and on top of all that took home an amazing bunch of flowers put together themselves. Thanks so much to those who came along, and to Kath. We are really excited that Kath loved the space we have to work in and we’ve already set two more dates for these workshops. We also held the Biggest Morning Tea on May 22nd. We were delighted to team up with the Wauchope Chamber of Commerce to present this event - it was supported by local cafes - Coffee on High & A Classy Cafe - who kindly donated platters of sweet treats and our amazing ladies from the office and factory baked a huge array of food which was devoured by those who came along. We were really pleased to welcome 45 people and raised $1,100 to go directly to support Cancer Council. Special mention goes to Amanda Beardow who is our representative driving this cause each year and Emily Hawker who supported her in ensuring we raised as
much as we possibly could for this cause which is so close to many people’s hearts.
Fittingly, our staff spotlight this month is on Amanda who came to us when we purchased Shades 2000 in 2022. She plays a pivotal role in ensuring our business runs as well as it does - she coordinates the factory to produce the volume it does - which, excitingly, has doubled since we took over in October 2022. She liaises with the sales staff to ensure their plan or vision for your job is delivered every time by our factory. She is also in charge of ordering and assists with planning of installations, as well as all this she steps in to help when needed in the office and showroom as her background is furnishingsespecially soft furnishings, AND, all the while she has the most fun and happy nature and the most infectious giggle. As you can imagine Amanda is a treasured and loved member of staff.
We are excited to announce our June events:
Another Floral Artistry with Kath from Bourne St Blooms and a Rag Rug making with Tina from Red Door on Cameron. Check social media for dates and booking information.
Every Thursday we have our in-house interior designer for you to meet with at no cost although appointments are essential. Julie has been doing amazing work this year assisting our customers with new builds as well as renovations
or an update. She can advise on window furnishings, soft furnishings, custom lamps, furniture revival, external as well as internal and don’t forget we have the Armadillo rugs which Julie can also co-ordinate into your space. We have a couple of birthdays coming up this month. One of which is a 40th and we’re looking forward to a little party, and for me, I’m looking forward to some Year 12 formal dress shopping with our daughter Maggie. She is going well in her studies and I just can’t believe the pace at which this final school year for her is flying by. Our eldest daughter Anna, who I mentioned at the start of the year has now been in Canada 4 months, she has settled in and is loving life.
Now that winter has arrived you might be feeling the cold and remembered that last year you had planned to get something done about that “before next winter”. If that is the case, give us a call, there are so many options we can help with to keep the cold out through the winter months and we can explain how these same solutions can be beneficial throughout the summer heat so your dollar will go further.
PS. We have more Laura Ashley stock in store as well as other homewares for you to check out if you’re looking for something a little different and … THE LA FABRICS ARE IN & THEY ARE BEAUTIFUL … feel free to pop in to have a look.

As the chill of winter begins to set in, there’s nothing quite like the comfort of a cosy bedroom to provide a warm and inviting retreat. Whether you’re snuggling up with a good book or simply seeking solace from the cold, transforming your bedroom into a haven of warmth and relaxation is a joy. Here are five simple yet effective ways to cosy up your bedroom for the winter season.
1. Invest in Luxurious Bedding
The key to a cosy bedroom lies in the bedding. Invest in high-quality, 100% linen or cotton flannel bedding that not only feels divine against your skin but also adds a touch of elegance to your space. Linen is my favourite because the natural fibres are breathable, moisture-wicking, and temperature-regulating, ensuring you stay comfortable throughout the night. Both linen and cotton flannel sheets will reduce the unpleasantness of getting into a stone cold bed. Perhaps also consider selecting darker, moody tones like rich charcoal, navy, golden ochre or forest green that help convey warmth and cosiness for winter.
Layer your bed with a heavier-weight duvet and a plush, high-loft mattress topper for an extra layer of cushiony softness, and don’t forget to top it off with a sumptuous throw at
the foot of the bed for those chilly evenings when you need an extra layer of warmth.
2. Add Warmer Lighting
Lighting plays a crucial role in setting the mood and ambiance of a space. Ditch the harsh overhead lighting and opt for warm, ambient lighting instead. Strategically place table lamps or floor lamps around the room, and consider investing in dimmable bulbs to create a soft, inviting glow. Candles are another excellent option for adding a cosy, flickering warmth to your bedroom. Arrange them on your nightstand, dresser, or even on a decorative tray for a touch of romantic ambiance.
3. Incorporate Plush Textures
Texture is key when it comes to creating a cosy atmosphere. Layer your bed with a variety of plush fabrics, such as velvety throws, chunky knit blankets, or faux fur accents. These tactile elements not only add visual interest but also invite you to snuggle up and sink into their softness. Consider adding a plush area rug to your bedroom for an extra layer of warmth and comfort underfoot.
4. Embrace Soothing Fragrances
Scent has the power to transport us and evoke a sense of comfort and relaxation. Introduce soothing fragrances into your bedroom to
create a calming and inviting atmosphere. Consider using essential oil diffusers or scented candles with warm, cosy scents like vanilla, cinnamon, or sandalwood. You can also spritz your bedding with a linen spray infused with rich scent for a peaceful, sleepinducing aroma.
5. Create a Cosy Reading Nook
Nothing says cosy quite like a dedicated reading nook in your bedroom. Carve out a corner and create a comfortable seating area with a plush armchair or a cosy window seat. Surround it with soft lighting, a small side table for your favourite mug of hot cocoa or tea, and a plush throw or cushions for added comfort. This intimate space will become your personal sanctuary, where you can escape the winter chill and lose yourself in the pages of a captivating book.
