Lyn and John have embarked on countless adventures together, exploring nearly every corner of the globe throughout the years. More recently in their retirement, they had been travelling Australia in their caravan.
It was when their wonderful years of travel came to an end, and they started spending more time at home that the idea of downsizing came about.
“Our home was quite large, and the two of us just didn’t need the space. We also knew there
was going to be a lot of upcoming maintenance that we didn’t want to deal with”, says John. They’d bought the house specifically to accommodate their truck and caravan, so there was a large driveway to attend to also.
So Lyn and John put their house on the market and began looking at retirement options when Oak Tree Coffs Harbour was still under construction, but when their home sold much faster than expected, they had to move into another apartment building nearby.
“We quickly realised it wasn’t for us because we needed somewhere that was one level and had a garage”, says John.
Luckily, Oak Tree Coffs Harbour ticked all their boxes, and they were able to move in shortly after.
“When we first came to see the village, we were very impressed. We’d had a look at everything in the area, but it was the location of Oak Tree that put it at the very top of our list.”
“We do all our shopping and medical appointments at Toormina Gardens Shopping Centre which is just 5 minutes from the village. It’s so convenient and the perfect fit for our lifestyle.”
For Lyn and John, the best part of making the move thus far has been the people. “Everyone is so nice and easy going here. It’s such a lovely, friendly community to be a part of.”
They also love the fact that they can lock up and leave whenever they like, having peace of mind that their home is secure in the safe hands of Oak Tree.
“We’ve got the freedom to come and go as we please, and if we choose to go away, we know there’ll be no maintenance to attend to when we get back. Oak Tree does everything!”
Since downsizing, John likes to spend most of his newfound free time simply relaxing. Lyn volunteers at the Westpac Helicopter local op shop, which both her and John help to do collections for. For the most part, they’re both just enjoying this new chapter and their hardearned freedom!
While Lyn and John are both still very independent and making the most of their retirement years, they know that the Oak Tree lifestyle has set them up well for the future.
“One of the best things about living here is knowing that if either of us have a health concern, we won’t have to worry about where we’re living, and we’ll always know the other person is in good hands.”
With their worries about maintenance put to rest, Lyn and John have discovered a new sense of peace and freedom at Oak Tree Coffs Harbour and look forward to a future filled with fun and new friendships!

Join us for lunch on the 14th August from 12:30pm at The Coast Hotel for an unmissable Media & Marketing Panel featuring industry trailblazers:
with the region’s leading marketing minds — all in one dynamic session.
As the only certified advanced laparoscopic gynaecological surgeon between Newcastle and the Gold Coast, Dr Aaron Budden is reshaping the future of women’s health on the Mid North Coast. With the launch of his new multidisciplinary clinic, Saige Health & Wellness, he and his team are delivering accessible, modern care in a truly collaborative and communityminded way.
Hi Dr Budden. You have been practicing obstetrics and gynaecology here on the Mid North coast for over 6 years. What inspired you to specialise in this field of medicine and what brought you to the coast? My interest in obstetrics and gynaecology started in medical school though it certainly came as a surprise. It was one of my first big clinical terms and whilst it wasn’t what I planned to do long term, I was keen to learn as much as possible. I really enjoyed being part of the lives of women and their families during their pregnancy and births. It was something I didn’t find in other specialties. After medical school I undertook early rotations in O&G and continued to pursue acceptance to formal training. It was in these early pre-training years that I met some great gynaecology mentors that pivoted my whole world view. Not only did they expose me to the depth of issues women face throughout their life past just being pregnant, but also the joy that comes from fertility and complex
surgery. Fast forward to training years and I was placed in Port Macquarie for 6 months and I seemed to have found my place. I really enjoyed the smaller town vibe and close community on the coast and spent my remaining time in training considering coastal towns where I could practice a mix of obstetrics and gynaecology, with a focus on complex minimally invasive surgery. With close friends nearby and the local marine research institute, Coffs Harbour was the best choice for me and my family.
For me, I really wanted to return to the coast with a surgical skill set to be able to undertake complex keyhole (laparoscopic) surgery.
You’re the only certified advanced laparoscopic gynaecological surgeon between Newcastle and the Gold Coast. Can you explain what that means, and why it’s significant for women in our region?
Firstly, let me say there are lots of ways to undertake specialist O&G training but our basic training only makes us
competent in a very general way. There are several avenues we can pursue for our 2 years of advanced training to prepare us for when we have finished. For me, I really wanted to return to the coast with a surgical skill set to be able to undertake complex keyhole (laparoscopic) surgery. Like many surgical specialties, laparoscopic has clear benefits to both patient and community to reduce recovery but requires additional training. At the time, the Australian Gynaecological Endoscopy & Surgery (AGES) society put together a 2-year structured curriculum to ensure appropriate training in advanced laparoscopic surgery and certified ability to undertake those procedures. Bringing this to the coast provides women with the option for modern care, in their hometown, and reduces the city-country divide.
Continued over....
This year we have seen your new clinic Saige Health & Wellness open. Tell Us about the Saige Health Model and the meaning behind Saige. To be honest 2024 was a wild year. I needed to take an extended leave from the public hospital to find time to complete my PhD and just as it was submitted, the private clinic I had been working from was due to close in a short space of time. For a few weeks I didn’t know where I would be working from this year, but after having a chat with friend and local GP Kristen Pigram, we thought that actually this could turn out to be a really good opportunity. We had the chance to put together a group of collaborative health professionals all dedicated to obstetrics and gynaecology. It was no longer this concept of coming just to see the specialist but about matching the right health professional to your needs. Getting to the name Saige was a longer process. It was important for us to avoid boxes or specific labels like “reproductive” or “women” as these are not inclusive to the larger community we care for and for some can make a place feel unsafe. So after a hundred iterations, we landed on Saige as a nod to the strength and wisdom of our patients.
What services are offered at Saige Health & Wellness?
On day one it was just me as a specialist gynaecologist. Since then, Saige has welcomed 2 women’s health general practitioners providing consults on contraception, sexual health, fertility, early pregnancy and menopause; a midwife offering both antenatal and postnatal care; women’s health physiotherapy; and the Saige Ultrasound practice.
ultrasounds. What has then evolved is a constant interaction between the Saige Health medical team and Saige Ultrasound to deliver more specific ultrasounds, faster discussion of results, and ultimately improved timing of providing necessary health care.
What would you like to see more of in terms of support for women’s health in regional NSW?
Public access gynaecology clinics. I could talk about this all day but it’s critical we put more time, more money, and more care into providing public access for outpatient care and inpatient surgery. The disparity between regional and city health care is often discussed about access to specialists, but equally it’s about equitable access to that care. Early access to appropriate health care ultimately is best for everyone.
We are excited to welcome our newest clinicians, endorsed midwife Erica and physiotherapist Claire this month as they widen the range of services that can be offered under one roof; as well as the expanding services offered by Saige Ultrasound.
How does Saige Ultrasound fit in with this practice model?
The ultrasound service was meant to be a little side project to support those with fertility issues and pre-surgical planning for endometriosis. Once started though, we began receiving requests to undertake greater gynaecology ultrasounds as well as pregnancy
What does the future hold for yourself and Saige Health & Wellness?
We have just gone 4 months old, and it feels like we have had so much happen already since day one. We are excited to welcome our newest clinicians, endorsed midwife Erica and physiotherapist Claire this month as they widen the range of services that can be offered under one roof; as well as the expanding services offered by Saige Ultrasound. I think all of us at Saige Health would like to bring more allied health clinicians on board and we hope to secure an exercise physiologist and dietician in the near future.
Thanks Dr Budden.
Local brothers Sam and Caleb Johnston are proof that shared values, vision, and a strong work ethic can take childhood dreams to new heights. From washing cars to leading two thriving Coffs Coast businesses—Vault Moving & Storage and Forest Built—they’re building more than companies; they’re building community, opportunity, and a legacy together.
hat was it like growing up together, and did you imagine you’d both end up running your own businesses?
Sam - Our entrepreneurial spirit showed up early. As kids, we started a car wash business at the local servo—it was our first taste of business, and we loved it. I think we always knew we’d end up doing something in that space, even if we didn’t quite know what it would be.
We had a great upbringing—very grounded, strong values, but not a lot of money. So if we wanted something, we had to work for it. That shaped our work ethic from a young age.
Sam, tell us about Vault—how did the idea for a moving and storage business come about, and what sets your service apart in the Coffs Harbour region?
Vault was born out of a bit of a pivot moment in 2020 when COVID hit. At the time, my wife and I were living in Sydney with our young son. Like a lot of families, we reassessed what was important and decided to move back to Coffs Harbour to be closer to family.
I was looking for my next challenge and thought, ‘How hard can running a removals and storage business be?’ So I bought Coffs Harbour Relocations and Storage in early 2021. We rebranded to Vault not long after, and since then, the business has grown rapidly.
What sets Vault apart is a combination of innovation and culture. We offer mobile storage solutions—essentially, we bring the storage units to you, load on-site, then return them to our depot where they’re forklifted into place. It saves time, prevents doublehandling, and adds real efficiency.
We’ve also embraced tech to streamline everything from quoting to logistics, and we’ve worked hard to build a team culture that’s professional, respectful, and customerfocused. I truly believe that’s what’s made Vault a standout brand in the local market.
And Caleb, how did Forest Built come to life? What kind of projects do you specialise in, and what’s your building philosophy?
We Started Forest Built in 2020 when we moved back to Coffs. I have 2 business partners Tom and Christian. We have grown organically over the last 5 years into what we
are now. We specialise in all projects from new builds, renovations, extensions, and commercial projects. Our building philosophy is really about quality, along with building good relationships and trust with our clients. Between you, you’re employing over 50 people locally. What does it mean to both of you to be providing jobs and opportunities here on the Coffs Coast?
Sam - It’s a pretty incredible number when I stop and reflect on it. It’s something we’re really proud of. It’s not just about providing jobs—it’s about creating opportunities for people to be part of something meaningful. Both Vault and Forest Built have strong visions and clear missions, and we’re deeply embedded in the local community. We hire locals who believe in what we’re building, and we work hard to create a culture that people actually want to be part of.
Caleb - It means a lot. Being a Coffs local it’s important to support local jobs and the community. There is also something special about watching apprentices grow into skilled workers and knowing we are keeping the industry strong locally, where it’s needed most. What are some of the biggest lessons you’ve learned so far—either from
each other, or from your own paths as business owners?
Sam - One of the biggest lessons I’ve had to learn as the business has grown is that I can’t do everything anymore.
Delegation has been a massive challenge— especially coming from a place where I used to wear every hat and handle every part of the business myself. Letting go of that control hasn’t been easy, and I’m definitely still learning.
Running a business is full-on—things go wrong, it gets overwhelming— but we’ve gotten good at reminding each other to keep our true north in focus.
couple for me as we focus on growth for Forest Built would be to ensure I am not just reacting to problems, but working on building systems to prevent them. Another one is creating a space where people feel comfortable to speak up—whether it’s challenging an idea or giving honest feedback. Growth comes from those conversations, and it’s important the team knows their input is valued.
everything he does.
Caleb - Sam has a big heart for people, and a big part of his business is helping his team improve themselves.
One of Sam's biggest strengths is his ability to handle adversity, he just finds solutions when most people would give up.
What’s your vision for the future—both for Vault and Forest Built? Any big goals, expansions or projects on the horizon?
I owe a lot of credit to Caleb for helping me grow in that area. He’s really encouraged me to trust and empower the team—to release people into their roles rather than micromanaging.
Another thing we’ve both learned from each other is the importance of regularly hitting the reset button and reconnecting with our 'why'. Running a business is full-on—things go wrong, it gets overwhelming—but we’ve gotten good at reminding each other to keep our true north in focus. For us, the why is always about serving the people around us and building something that benefits more than just ourselves.
Caleb - I have learnt many lessons but a
What do you think are each other's biggest strengths?
Sam - From my perspective, one of Caleb’s biggest strengths is his ability to cast a clear vision, build a strong culture, and bring the best out of his team. It’s not just about hiring great people—it’s about drawing out their potential, and Caleb does that exceptionally well.
It shows in his work. He’s one of the best builders (if not the best) in Coffs Harbour. His reputation is incredible, with loads of repeat business and referrals, which speaks volumes. He’s built a strong brand and an exceptional team—driven by the same ethos we both share: ‘What can we give?’ not ‘What can we get?’. That principle sits at the heart of
Sam - At Vault, our vision is to become synonymous with being the best removal company in Australia. We’re actively working on expanding into multiple locations over the coming years and continuing to evolve our offering through smart technology and streamlined systems.
Our goal is to become a major player in the removals and storage industry nationwide. We’ve worked hard to build a strong brand, a solid process, a positive team culture, and a clear vision—and it’s paying off.
We believe what we’ve built here is scalable, and we’re confident that we can replicate it in other regions. We’ve got big plans for Vault, and we’re excited for what’s ahead.
Caleb - Forest Built’s vision is to keep building a name and business we’re genuinely proud of that aligns with our values. We’re focused on steady growth and expanding our team and capabilities but doing it well.
Co s Harbour basketballer Kira Ju ermans is MAKING HER MARK ON THE INTERNATIONAL STAGE, RECENTLY SELECTED AS ONE OF ONLY FIVE AUSTRALIAN GIRLS TO ATTEND THE PRESTIGIOUS NIKE ALL-ASIA Basketball Camp in Beijing. RECENTLY
Hi Kira. Congratulations! You’re one of just 12 young Australians chosen to attend the Nike AllAsia Basketball Camp— how did it feel when you found out you’d been selected?
Honestly, it was such a mix of emotions when I found out - lots of excitement, a bit of nervousness, but mostly I just felt super honoured. To be one of only five Aussie girls chosen is pretty surreal. I've always dreamed of being part of something like this, and knowing how competitive it is makes it feel even more special. It’s like all the hard work, the early mornings, and the extra sessions are paying off.
You’re currently in China, what has the experience been like so far, both on and off the court?
It’s been amazing! On the court, it’s been such a high-level environment—playing with girls from all over Asia and being coached by incredible coaches from around the world has pushed me to a new level. We’ve had some intense sessions and learned a lot of new concepts that I hadn’t seen before. Off the court, it’s been just as cool. I’ve had the
chance to explore parts of Beijing, see some historic places, and try lots of new foods. The culture here is so different and interesting. It’s honestly been the perfect mix of personal growth and adventure.
Everyone here is incredibly talented, and it’s been a massive learning curve adapting to the style of play with people from di erent countries.
What has been the biggest challenge of training and playing in a high-pressure international environment like this camp?
The biggest challenge has definitely been the language barrier between teammates and coaches. There are girls here from the Philippines, Japan, Korea, China, Taiwan and Hong Kong. Having to listen to a translator and focus on the actions and drawings of different plays has been so hard but also a unique experience. Everyone here is incredibly talented, and it’s been a massive learning curve adapting to the style of play with people from different countries. It has definitely pushed me out of my comfort zone, which hasn’t been easy, but really rewarding.
Have you had the chance to meet or train with any high-level coaches or players
who’ve really inspired you during the camp?
Yes! The head coach, Dave Severns, has worked in the NBA for years and is currently a scout for the Indiana Pacers. His insight into what it takes to make it to the next level has been really eye-opening. There are also other coaches here with experience in the NBA, college basketball in the US, and elite programs across Asia. And the players here are just as inspiring — some of them already have international experience, which really motivates me. I’ve made friendships that I know will last beyond this camp.
How has your time in Beijing shaped your goals for the future, both in basketball and beyond?
It’s definitely given me a clearer focus. Being surrounded by so many talented and driven athletes has made me even more determined to work hard and keep chasing opportunities like this. I’m more motivated than ever to improve and hopefully get more chances to compete internationally. I’ve loved every minute
of this experience, and it’s made me even hungrier for what’s next.
What’s your training routine like back home in Coffs Harbour? Who’s been instrumental in your development as a player?
Back home in Coffs Harbour, my team trains twice a week, but I always try to put in extra work. I know that team sessions aren’t enough on their own, so I focus a lot on strength, conditioning, and individual skills. I’ve been really lucky with the people around me.
My club, the Coffs Harbour Suns, has been such a big part of my journey. Their guidance in the basketball pathways, especially from coach Andrew Williams (who coached me for about four years) has played a huge role in pushing me to be better. A couple of years ago, I was also lucky enough to be named the "Hoys Young Athlete of the Year" and Hoys Allied Health & Wellness continue to support my journey. They really help me with strength, recovery and injury prevention and I certainly wouldn't be where I am today without them. My family has also been amazing — my mum and granny coached me when I was younger and taught me so much about the game
and being a good teammate. My family has always believed in me and are my biggest cheerleaders, and that means everything. You’ve made it to this elite level, what drives you to keep pushing and improving your game every day?
My club, the Co s Harbour Suns, has been such a big part of my journey. eir guidance in the basketball pathways, especially from coach Andrew Williams (who coached me for about four years) has played a huge role in pushing me to be be er.
I just want to be the best version of myself — both as a basketball player and as a person. There are so many amazing opportunities out there, especially in women’s basketball right now, and I want to grab every one I can. My goal isn’t just to compete, but to dominate. Seeing other players succeed really drives me, especially my sister Isla — she’s played for Australia and is now on a college scholarship in the US. She inspires me a lot. And my mum has always told me that "anything is possible with hard work", which I try to live by.
What’s next for you after this camp—any tournaments, goals or new dreams on the
horizon?
Yes! I’m heading to the US next month with AUSA Hoops for a monthlong trip. We’ll have an intensive training camp and then play in two big AAU tournaments: the Run 4 Roses Classic in Louisville, Kentucky and the Nike Tournament of Champions in Chicago, Illinois. I’m so excited to compete against some of the best athletes in the US and hopefully play in front of college coaches and scouts.
Back home, my Coffs Harbour Suns team is playing in the Junior Premier League with Basketball NSW, which wraps up in August in Sydney. After that, my next goal is to make the U20 state team in January 2026.
I’m also in Year 11 right now, so school is a big focus too — I know how important it is if I want to play overseas after I finish. We used to have this book as kids called The World is Your Oyster, and I can’t wait to go out into it.
Thanks Kira.

Hi Laura. It’s great to catch up again. For those who might not remember, can you give us a quick rundown of what the Mystery Box Rally is all about?
Thanks for having me again. Absolutely, the Mystery Box Rally is a unique fundraising event for cancer research, where teams travel for 5 days in their 25+ year old, two-wheel drive cars over some off-the-beaten-track roads. As the name suggests, the route is a mystery, and each stopover is only revealed each morning before departure. It is a great experience and offers an unforgettable way to travel parts of Australia while supporting such a meaningful cause.
You and your dad, Steve, made quite the impact last year — raising over $17,000 and winning best-dressed team! What are your standout memories from that adventure?
Thank you, we are incredibly proud of our efforts last year. The whole rally experience is hard to put into words. The route had us travel along everything from winding goat tracks, water crossings, and heavy corrugation.
Laura Orr, alongside her dad Steve, made a splash in last year’s Mystery Box Rally with a standout fundraising e ort, unforge able costumes, and plenty of outback grit. With the next rally kicking o soon in Broken Hill, and the car decked out with a new ‘Mad Ha ers’ theme, we check in to hear how they are gearing up for another wild ride for cancer research.
We saw outback sunsets, a cattle muster, and plenty of dust and Australian wildlife. However, my standout memories revolve around the people we met on the rally. The collective spirit of these people was infectious, and it was a very humbling experience. How did it feel travelling over 2,600km, more than half of it on dirt roads, in a car that most people probably wouldn’t take to the shops?
Every night when you roll into camp you can’t help but give your car a little pat and be grateful that you made it. Luckily, we had only minor issues on the road. Our engine was flooded after driving through a muddy water crossing, our exhaust dislodged and fell off, and the worst was when our headlights decided to die one night and, with no light pollution in outback Aus, we couldn’t see a meter in front of us – that one was stressful. But it is all part of the adventure and really adds some excitement to the day. There were
a handful of cars that didn’t make it to the finish line, and one didn’t even get over the start line.
This year’s rally kicks off in Broken Hill. How are you preparing mentally, mechanically, and costume-wise for the unknown journey ahead?
Our engine was flooded a er driving through a muddy water crossing, our exhaust dislodged and fell o , and the worst was when our headlights decided to die one night...
Mentally, we just have to be ready for anything. I think you have to plan for the worst and hope for the best. The car has had a service and, so far, everything looks rally ready. We have some great costumes this year and one in particular that I cannot wait to wear – it will be a bit of a laugh, especially on Dad. Let’s just say it doesn’t leave much to the imagination.
Tell us about the new look for your car — what makeover have the Mad Hatters pulled off this time?
Well, just like the rally cars, we think you have to have at least one screw loose to participate in the rally and, well, there is no one quite
as mad as The Mad Hatter. The car has been stripped of last year’s paint and has had a full Alice in Wonderland theme makeover. It is bright and colourful and definitely going to stand out against the red dirt.
Fundraising is such a massive part of the rally. What have you got planned this year to reach, or beat, last year’s total?
Cancer does not discriminate, and its impact is profound. We know firsthand how much is at stake, and we want to contribute to the future success of cancer treatments in Australia.
Fundraising is the heart of the rally, and community support makes all the difference. This year, Knowla Livestock generously donated four Angus cows, which were sold at auction, raising nearly $7,000 for the cause. We have already raffled off an LG 65” TV donated by Gloucester Betta & flooring, and Dad is currently running another raffle for firewood in Gloucester, where he lives. We collect some cash by doing Return and Earn. Beyond that, we rely on donations from businesses and the public.
Where does the money raised go, and why is this cause so important to you and your dad?
Every dollar raised goes directly to cancer
research in Australia. In partnership with Cancer Council, the Box Rallies have funded 76 research programs to date. 13 years ago, my niece was just 3 years old when she was diagnosed with Leukemia. She endured 3 grueling years of treatment, but thanks to advancements in Australian cancer research and treatment, she survived. Then, in 2023, my husband was diagnosed with bowel cancer, followed just months later by my best friend, a mum of 3, who received a breast cancer diagnosis. Unfortunately, these are not the only loved ones we know facing this disease and undoubtedly won’t be the last. Cancer does not discriminate, and its impact is profound. We know firsthand how much is at stake, and we want to contribute to the future success of cancer treatments in Australia. This is our way of doing so.
What’s the dynamic like between you
and your dad on the road — any tips for surviving five unpredictable days in a car together?
We only had a few minor tense moments last year – notable mention to when the headlights went out and stress levels were momentarily elevated – but for the most part, we get along great. He snores like a chainsaw, so I mainly just need to set my tent up a distance from his swag to make sure I get a decent night’s sleep. And he snacks like a primary school kid, so he stays happy so long as he has his muesli bars and poppers at hand.
How can people support your fundraising efforts or follow your journey this year?
We know times are tough, but every contribution, big or small, truly matters. Donations can be made via our wegive page: 2025.mysteryboxrally.com.au/madhatters or people can follow our journey on Instagram: @madhatters_mysterybox Thanks Laura.
Hi Reef. First of all, congratulations on your nomination! How did it feel to find out you’d been recognised in the Yandaarra Aunty Grace Roberts Community Awards this year?
I feel very honoured and privileged that I have been nominated for this award. I was super excited when I was told that someone in our community had nominated me.
Can you tell us how your football journey began? What first inspired you to take up the game?
I started playing in the under 8’s for the Northern Storm Football Club. My dad played in first grade and football (besides surfing) was a big part of his life. I loved playing with all my friends and as we got older I started to progress with my football and started making some representative teams.
Sport is obviously a big part of your
for a Sports Achievement Award along the way. in local sport, already making waves in the football world with her talent, determination, and dedication. Recently nominated for a Sports Achievement Award in the Yandaarra Aunty Grace Roberts Community Awards, Reef is not only excelling on the field but proudly representing her culture and community
life. What does being nominated for a Sports Achievement award mean to you personally?
I play a lot of sports, Oztag, Touch, Surfing, I’ve even tried Basketball and AFL. I train a lot for football with my rep teams and my Club. Sport is a big part of our family lifestyle. Being nominated means the world to me, being recognised for a sport that I love and am passionate about. Also the award is super special for my culture and representing my community in this way. It helps to motivate me more also.
My biggest supporter and role model is my Dad, he has taught me the game and how to work hard at training. My Dad has been our Club coach for the last 3 years and very supportive of myself and all our team.
Sport is a big part of our family lifestyle. Being nominated means the world to me, being recognised for a sport that I love and am passionate about.
Who have been your biggest supporters or role models—on the field and in life?
You’ve already achieved so much at a young age, what are some of the highlights of your sporting career so far?
Winning my first Grand Final in the Under 12 1st division was a highlight for me.
Another highlight was winning the Golden Boot award for the Northern Storm Juniors.
Being chosen in TFP (Talented Female Football Program) for the last 2 years, and this year
being chosen in the TSP (Talented Support Program) which is a National talented player pathway, implemented by Northern NSW Football, to assist players in maximizing their potential.
Another highlight would be winning the Northern NSW Football Champion of Champions Tournament for the last 3 years in a row with our team.
And one of the best was travelling to the Gold Coast last year to the Premier Invitational TFP tournament, where we competed against teams from all over Australia, and won the competition, with 2 penalty shoot outs to get there.
How do you stay motivated and focused, especially during tough games or training sessions?
To not overthink in tough games and stay calm, which keeps me focused throughout the plays. I stay fit by playing lots of side sports and do lots of training.
There is a great program called Rise, the bus picks you up in the morning, takes you to the fields for training, you can shower and have
breakfast and they take you to school.
It’s a great start to the day and open to any football level, the coaches are top level coaches, I try to not wear myself out, so get there when it is best, especially in the off season when I don’t have Club soccer or rep training.
It feels great to be recognised for my achievements, representing my culture in my chosen sport. I hope I can inspire more young females to be dedicated and focused and pursue sport as a way of having a healthy lifestyle.
in football and beyond?
To never give up and exceed in the sport I love the most, but always have fun and enjoy the game. I also want to do well in school and continue to represent my community in a healthy and positive way.
Whats next on the agenda?
The love of the sport keeps me motivated and seeing all the friends I have made.
The Yandaarra Aunty Grace Roberts Community Awards celebrate Aboriginal excellence and leadership. What does that kind of recognition mean to you?
It feels great to be recognised for my achievements, representing my culture in my chosen sport. I hope I can inspire more young females to be dedicated and focused and pursue sport as a way of having a healthy lifestyle.
What are your goals for the future, both
Playing all my Club games to the end of season and hoping to make the Grand Final.
My TFP team has been entered into the Northern NSW Football Community State Youth Championships at Lake Macquarie in July, which runs for 5 days.
Our TFP team will also be competing in the Gold Coast Premier Invitational TFP tournament again in September. Very excited to do the away trips, it’s a lot of fun with my teammates.
Thanks Reef.

What inspires your culinary creations?
For me, inspiration begins with the ingredients, seasonal, wild, or beautifully grown. I’m drawn to honest flavours and love creating dishes that honour the product while exploring new, unexpected directions. Cooking over fire adds a primal edge, depth, and texture I find exciting. But beyond ingredients and technique, it’s the people, the growers, producers, and artisans who inspire me most through the passion they pour into their craft.
What journey led you to become an award-winning chef? Food has always been part of my life, my parents ran a catering business in India, so I was surrounded by it from an early age. Moving to Australia gave me the chance to train in some incredible kitchens. Each taught me lessons: discipline, creativity, leadership, and how to cook with purpose. But it wasn’t just the big moments; the quiet ones, long hours, failed dishes, and doubt shaped me just as much. Competitions became a way to push myself and keep learning.
How do you create new dishes or menus? My process always starts with what’s in season, what’s local, and what has a story to tell. I think about balance texture, acidity, depth, and soul and draw on my own memories, travels, and the people I’m cooking for. It’s never just about flavours but about
connection. I test, taste, and refine repeatedly until the dish feels honest and complete. What ingredients or flavours do you love to work with? Seafood is a Favorite because it’s incredibly versatile it lets me explore everything from delicate, fresh flavours to rich, bold ones. I also love Mediterranean coastal flavours - bright citrus, fresh herbs, olives, and olive oil that bring vibrant, sun-soaked qualities to my dishes. Combining seafood with these elements and house made touches like oyster sauce creates layers of flavour that are refined yet soulful.
Can you share the story behind one of your signature dishes? One dish that holds a special place in my heart is my take on my grandmother’s pork curry with rice. It’s a recipe passed down through generations and taught to me by my mum. Cooking it always brings back memories of family gatherings and the comfort food brings. When I recreate it, I honour the traditional spices and cooking methods while incorporating fresh, local ingredients and modern techniques to elevate the flavours without losing its soul. It’s more than a dish, it’s a connection between past and present, culture and creativity, and a way to share my heritage with others.
How has your cooking style evolved?
When I recreate it, I honour the traditional spices and cooking methods while incorporating fresh, local ingredients and modern techniques to elevate the flavours without losing its soul.
My style is a blend of diverse experiences and deepening understanding of ingredients and culture. Mentors like my mum, Thomas Pirker, Nathan Johnson, George Calombaris, Neil Smith, and Cameron Mathews influenced me greatly. I’ve learned to balance innovation with respect for tradition, always focusing on fresh, thoughtful ingredients that tell a story. My style is about connection to the people I cook for, the ingredients I use, and the stories I want to share.
What challenges do you face maintaining high standards and innovation? Every day brings new challenges: balancing creativity with the pressure to deliver flawless dishes, leading a team, and staying one step ahead. It means embracing the grind, staying hungry to learn, and never settling for “good enough”. How do you stay motivated after recognition? Winning this title was an epic moment, but it’s just fuel for the fire. I stay motivated by diving headfirst into new challenges, experimenting boldly with flavours, and pushing my creativity further. Inspiration comes from mentors, teammates, the community, and even tough moments that push me to grow. This recognition isn’t a finish
line it’s a launchpad to dream bigger, cook louder, and keep smashing goals.
What role does sustainability or local sourcing play? Sustainability and local sourcing are the backbone of my kitchen. I work closely with local producers who share my passion for quality and environmental care. Using seasonal, fresh ingredients keeps my dishes vibrant and pushes me to get creative with what’s available. It’s about respect for the earth, the community, and the future of our food.
What advice would you give young chefs competing at a high level? Back yourself and do the hard work, there are no shortcuts. Master fundamentals, stay curious, and be willing to learn constantly. Surround yourself with people who challenge and inspire you. Competing at a high level takes grit, focus, and calm under pressure. Don’t fear failure it’s where the biggest growth happens. Most importantly, stay true to your style and passion, that’s what sets you apart.
Any upcoming projects or collaborations? The fire’s only getting hotter. I’m excited about collaborations with local growers, makers, and chefs who share my passion for bold, honest food. We’re crafting experiences that connect deeply. In the kitchen, I’m pushing flavour and technique to new heights, with new menus, pop-ups, guest chef events, and community projects on the horizon at Aanuka Beach House.
Thanks Richmond.
Hi Dustin, tell us about your journey to opening Ground Earth Café? What inspired you to start it? Ground Earth Café came from a pretty raw and personal place. I’ve spent most of my life in hospitality—working in fine dining restaurants, large-scale venues, and learning from chefs and teams from all over the world. I’ve picked up skills, techniques, and flavour profiles from a wide range of cultures, and along the way I realised I didn’t just want to execute someone else’s vision—I wanted to build something of my own. I then met Sasha at my daughters 5th birthday party and she too had a vision to create a communal space centred around food and drink. Ground Earth was
Owned by Dusty and Sasha, Ground Earth is the “Hipster” cafe in Woolgoolga. eir menu is seasonal using fresh local produce and o ers a great range of vegetarian dishes with specials varying daily. We had a chat with Dustin BowieFord to find out more….
born from both of us wanting to slow things down, create connection, and still bring a high level of creativity and technical skill to the menu. It wasn’t just about coffee and food—it was about creating a space where people could feel seen, nourished, and inspired. Before we knew it we had become business partners and signed a ten year lease. What makes your café unique compared to others in the area? We’ve built Ground Earth around the idea of soulful hospitality. Every interaction matters, every dish tells a

story, and nothing is just “thrown together.” We bring a level of attention to detail that’s been shaped by my fine dining background, but we deliver it in a space that’s warm, approachable, and relaxed. From the design and layout, to the artwork, and the produce—we try to create a vibe that feels considered, but never forced. How do you develop and select your menu? Are there any signature dishes or drinks you’re known for? Menu
our proudest connection is with Dusty’s Permaculture Farm—a personal project where we grow a variety of exotic fruits and herbs all year round.
development is where everything I’ve learned comes into play. I’ve been lucky enough to work across a variety of cuisines—Asian, Mediterranean, Middle Eastern, South American—and I’ve always been fascinated by how each culture approaches food and what story it tells. We also focus heavily on seasonal, local produce—our house-made granola and colourful, nourishing bowls are staples, and our Brisket Toastie and Savoury Lentils has a bit of a cult following. On the drinks side, our turmeric latte and house-blend espresso are crowd favourites. As we expand into dinner service, we’ll have the opportunity to really showcase some creative techniques and more elevated flavour combinations.
What role does local sourcing or community involvement play in your business? It plays a huge role. We work closely with local producers, bakers, roasters, and small businesses—we believe that what’s grown and made locally should stay in the community. We’ve also spent a lot of time
in the Woogoolga community gardens, which really shaped the way we think about food from the ground up. But our proudest connection is with Dusty’s Permaculture Farm—a personal project where we grow a variety of exotic fruits and herbs all year round. It’s part experiment, part lifestyle. We love harvesting things straight from the land and bringing them into the kitchen. Seasonal fruits, fresh herbs, and homegrown garnishes often make their way onto the menu—and the dishes taste even better knowing where they came from.
How do you stay current with café trends and customer preferences? Hospitality is always shifting, so we keep our ears to the ground. I follow what’s happening around the globe, especially in café and fine dining scenes, but I also listen closely to our locals. We’ve adapted our offerings over time— from plant-based options to gluten-free baking to low-waste packaging—because our community told us what mattered to
them. We also lean into innovation when it aligns with our values. Whether it’s new cooking techniques, flavour pairings, or how we present dishes—evolution is part of the journey.
What plans or upcoming events do you have to grow or evolve your café? We’re working on launching our dinner service, which will be a big step forward. It’ll give us a chance to showcase a more creative and technique-driven side of the kitchen through a seasonal set menu, supported by a carefully curated bar. We’re also planning a series of farm-to-table events in collaboration with local growers and artists as well as taking part in the next Woolgoolga Chamber of Commerce Sip and Stroll event on the 26th of July. Growth for us isn’t just about expansion—it’s about deepening our roots.
How can we get in touch? Come by the café—we’re always up for a chat over a coffee or something a little stronger. You can also find us on Instagram @groundearthcafe or head to our website groundearth.com. au. Whether you’re a local or just passing through, you’re always welcome Thanks Dustin.

In the busyness of modern life, we o en forget how it feels to simply slow down and enjoy the moment. ankfully, two beloved local gems in Co s Harbour are making it easier than ever to reconnect—with community, creativity, and ourselves.
Whether it’s a chilled-out Sunday at Harbourside Markets or a nourishing weekday stop at The Happy Frog Café, each offers its own unique experience centred on local flavour and heartfelt connection.
Harbourside Markets: Here comes Sunday
Every Sunday at the Jetty Foreshore, Harbourside Markets comes to life. It’s not just a market— it’s a Sunday ritual for many locals and visitors alike.
There’s something deeply nostalgic about strolling through stalls, coffee in hand, live music playing in the background, and the ocean breeze drifting by. The markets remind
us that Sundays can still be about relaxation, reconnection, and taking the time to enjoy the simple things. The vibrant mix of food, handmade products, and community spirit creates a feast for the senses. Whether you’re craving gozleme, sushi, burgers, or organic doughnuts, there’s something to satisfy every appetite—without breaking the bank. Beyond the food, the markets are also a haven for creativity and craft. Local artists and makers offer everything from pottery, jewellery, and clothing to candles, plants, and original artwork. It’s a beautiful place to buy something special and hear the story behind it.
There’s more to enjoy than just shopping. From face painting and hair braiding to tarot readings and massages, Harbourside Markets invites you to slow down and savour the
experience. It’s a place to meet new people, make connections, and immerse yourself in a community that truly values its people. Harbourside Markets isn’t just a place to buy—it’s a place to be.
The Happy Frog Café: Nourishing Coffs, Six Days a Week
While the markets bring life to Sundays, The Happy Frog Café keeps the heart of Coffs Harbour beating strong from Monday through Saturday. Just a short walk from the Jetty or town centre, The Happy Frog has become a favourite for locals seeking nourishing food, meaningful conversation, and a calm place to recharge. Open late until 6pm on weekdays to grab a last minute meal for the family or a late coffee catchup with friends (open until 3:30pm on Saturdays). More than just a café, The Happy Frog is a
community hub built around sustainability, health, and heartfelt hospitality. The menu is full of flavourful vegetarian and plantbased meals—vibrant salads, warming soups, slow-cooked curries, and nourishing bowls. If you’re on the go, the café’s readymade jar meals are a practical and affordable way to bring the goodness home. They're delicious, nutritious, and a perfect solution for busy weeks.
And the commitment to wellbeing goes far beyond the kitchen. The Happy Frog’s retail space is filled with thoughtfully curated items
designed to support a more conscious way of living.
Ecofriendly cookware, handmade candles, locally made pottery, and sustainable homewares all reflect the café’s ethos of light living with a lighter footprint.
The staff are warm and welcoming, inviting you to sit, stay, and soak in the good vibes. It’s a space where new friendships are formed, ideas are shared, and everyone feels part of something greater.

It’s a space where new friendships are formed, ideas are shared, and everyone feels part of something greater. Whether you’re a first-time visitor or a familiar face, you’ll leave feeling nourished, inside and out.
Although they operate on different days, Harbourside Markets and The Happy Frog Café share the same values: supporting local, celebrating creativity, and creating meaningful connections. Both provide platforms for small-scale producers, artists, growers and makers to share their goods and tell their stories. In doing so, they help foster a stronger, more sustainable local economy and a more
connected community.
By choosing to shop at the markets or at The Happy Frog, you’re doing more than enjoying a day out or a delicious meal. You’re investing in local people, encouraging environmentally friendly choices, and helping build a future where community matters more than convenience.
So, as your week unfolds, remember that Coffs Harbour offers more than just places to eat and shop. It offers spaces that nourish the spirit, foster connection, and bring people together. Spend your Sunday at Harbourside Markets. Drop by The Happy Frog during the week. And savour the rhythm of a life lived more locally, more consciously, and more joyfully.

Revered Australian singer-songwriter Pete Murray is embarking on a mammoth 54-date run that will see Pete expansively tour the country in solo acoustic mode for the first time ever, and supported nationally by Rachael Fahim and Brett Wood.
Pete Murray needs little introduction as one of Australia’s most successful singer-songwriters who has sold over 1.2 million albums, amassed hundreds of millions of streams, released three ARIA chart-topping albums, and boasts 17 ARIA Award nominations amongst multiple other wins and nominations. His tour will be Pete’s first ever solo tour on home soil, armed with an acoustic guitar and a stunning back catalogue of hits to create his setlists from. “I’ve never done a solo tour in this
country before, so it’s been on the cards for a while,” shares Pete. “I’ve done it overseas and people love it – so it’s about time I did it in my own country. There is some story telling of my songs, my life and career. These shows are very intimate.”
He has also just offered fans a second taste of his new body of work, following on from his 2024 release Wouldn’t It Be Good. New single I Am Fire finds Pete channelling powerful emotive and tranquil arrangements with a nod to one of his favourite guitar sounds, as he elaborates, “I just bought a
Gibson 1971 Classical guitar before I recorded I Am Fire and I knew this guitar had to be on this song. I love the classical guitar sound Rodriguez uses on his recordings, and it’s that same 60s/70s classical guitar sound that I was going for. The guitar created a real mood on the song that works well with the lyrics.”

Local artist Honey Cairns is a proud Gumbaynggirr woman using her creative voice to empower, educate and connect communities through the power of art. Here she shares the deeply personal journey behind her work, her passion for keeping culture alive, and what to expect from her future exhibition at e Gallery, Saltwater Freshwater Arts Alliance.
Hi Honey, tell us a bit about yourself and your creative journey so far?
I'm a 29 year old proud Gumbaynggirr Mother. Currently I keep an ear out for opportunities in the community to work with schools and organisations to develop projects or workshops for students or the general public at a great cost-effective price because I believe that all children, indigenous or not, have the right to grow up embracing and learning and understanding indigenous culture and art and plan to create social media accounts so others may find me more accessible, so keep a look out!
I do have my own passion projects I am still yet to create and are currently being developed, although not ready to share until 2026 at the SaltWater FreshWater Gallery. I’m deeply grateful for the opportunity to collaborate with Saltwater FreshWater and the National Aboriginal Design Agency. This experience has been more than just a step forward in my art career, it’s been a turning point. Their belief in me, my work, and my cultural voice gave me the confidence to believe in myself. They didn’t just offer a platform; they offered recognition, trust, and
support and in doing so, they made me feel truly seen.
Through this collaboration, I’ve grown not only as an artist but also as a person. It’s incredibly empowering to have your work embraced by organisations that value culture, creativity, and connection. Their support reminded me that our story matters, our art matters, and that I have something unique to contribute.
How does your identity and connection to Country influence your art?
As a proud Gumbaynggirr woman, my passion for art began as a child, sitting beside my Grandmother Margaret Boney, watching her create breathtaking masterpieces. I was in awe, wishing to be just like her. Yet, growing up, I often felt ashamed of who I was due to the way society and schools portrayed our history. I longed to feel seen, valued, and included. These experiences ignited a deep commitment within me to share and celebrate Indigenous art in the community so that First Nations culture can thrive, be cherished, embraced and fill the hearts of children with pride, belonging, and strength. What themes or stories are you exploring in your upcoming exhibition at The Gallery? Definitely empowerment and resilience. I want
to use my art to tell the stories and truth of our First Nations people and show just how incredibly strong and resilient we are. My hope is that someone sees the work and feels that same power inside themselves.
I’m also exploring connections to Country, maybe even in a very literal way. I have plans to create a portrait entirely from elements of nature, something really visually striking, to give “connection to Country” a whole new meaning that people can feel throughout their whole being and deep within their soul.
How would you describe your style of art and what makes it unique?
I feel like I’ve only just recently found “my style,” after years of exploring. I’d call it “Contemporary Indigenous Fusion”, with a strong focus on storytelling or capturing a moment in time. It’s a mix of traditional Indigenous methods blended with Western techniques. It’s not just dot painting, and it’s not purely Western portraiture either. It’s something that lives in-between, constantly growing and shifting, just like culture itself. What makes it unique is that it’s designed to build understanding. It’s for everyone. Something that speaks to both Indigenous and non-Indigenous people and invites them together as one.
Can you describe your preferred mediums and techniques, and how you use them to express your stories?
I love playing with colour, layering multiple shades or using strong contrasts. It helps bring traditional symbols and stories to life and makes them stand out, without losing the Western elements that are also part of my style. It’s all about balance for me, letting both the modern and traditional live in the same space, while keeping the story at the centre. Although this is currently my favourite, I believe this may soon change with my upcoming exhibition in 2026 that will include nature’s elements.
How important is it to you to keep culture alive through art, and what role do you think artists play in that process? It’s everything. Honestly, I feel a calling in my heart to keep sharing culture, especially with our children, because they’re our future. Art is powerful. It holds our stories, our knowledge, our truth and traditions. It’s not just about something that looks good, it’s about how it makes people feel and what it passes on and the legacy it can leave behind. Artists have the chance to make people stop, think, connect, and most importantly, remember. We help keep the world’s oldest living culture alive and thriving. That’s a big responsibility, but also such a gift. What do you hope audiences will feel or take away when they view your exhibition?
I want people to feel the truth, to reflect, and to walk away changed in some way, whether they feel moved, uplifted, educated, or deeply inspired. Even though the artworks follow a shared theme, each piece holds its own energy. Everyone will connect with something different and that’s part of the beauty in it all. My hope is that it deepens people’s understanding of First Nations culture and sparks a sense of connection and respect.
It tells the story of the journey into motherhood, a tribute to our Gumbaynggirr women who would travel across the mountain to give birth at the sacred birthing place...
is powerful, sacred, and deeply woven into who we are as Mothers. What advice would you give to young Indigenous artists who are just starting to explore their cultural identity through creativity?
Is there a particular artwork in the exhibition that holds special meaning to you? Can you share the story behind it? My most meaningful work is still sitting in my mind, it’s not finished yet, but I know it’s coming. For now, the piece closest to my heart is the one displayed in the maternity ward at Coffs Harbour Base Hospital. It tells the story of the journey into motherhood, a tribute to our Gumbaynggirr women who would travel across the mountain to give birth at the sacred birthing place (which I won’t name out of respect). It’s about that transformation and journey, leaving as one person and returning as a mother. That journey
Do not doubt your ability. Once upon a time I didn’t think my art could ever make a real difference, but over time, I saw how my work made people feel. Some were even brought to tears. That’s when I realised how much this truly matters.
Every story, every symbol you create is a part of something bigger. It’s a step toward healing, understanding, and keeping culture alive. To any young artists out there, keep going. Your voice matters more than you know. We need you. The world needs your truth. You're carrying on the oldest tradition in the world, and your creativity is what keeps that tradition alive for generations to come.
Thanks Honey.
AUTHOR
Sarah Cook is about to launch her book Harvesting Silence; a very personal memoir that deals with her painful past, but also her rise away from shame and into the healing and empowering journey she is on. Her goal is to empower others to find their voice, and to remove the stigma and shame around being a victim of abuse.
Hi Sarah. Congratulations on the release of your book Harvesting Silence. Can you tell us what inspired you to finally put your story into words and publish it now?
Harvesting Silence is my memoir, highlighting how childhood abuse can alter the trajectory of your life. From the age of eight, I was
groomed by a man training to be a Catholic priest. It began with him grooming my mother, who was working as a volunteer at the Marist Fathers Mission Centre at our local church. He began visiting our family home where he sexually abused me. After 4 years of these visits, I finally found the courage to report my abuse to the nuns at my school, who then reported to the Marist Fathers. They collaborated and silenced me, protecting my perpetrator and the church.
After 50 years of silence and crippling shame, an inner voice spoke to me, “write your story”. Initially, I found it challenging digging into the secrets of my dark past, but I knew there was purpose in the pain and the time was now!
How did the Royal Commission into Institutional Responses in 2014 change your life? What was it like to finally be heard and believed after so many years of silence?
The Royal Commission was held, following revelations of child abusers being moved from place to place instead of their abuse and crimes being reported. I was one of 8,013 people chosen to attend a private session with the Commissioners. It was the first time I had spoken of the abuse since reporting it back in 1976, nearly four decades earlier. That moment—being heard, being believed—was life-changing. I was no longer a victim. I was a survivor. How did pursuing justice contribute to
In 2020, I took a bold step and began searching for my perpetrator on Google. I uncovered that he had been quietly moved overseas, part of a disturbing pattern of relocating problem priests. I reported the abuse to the police, which led to an arrest warrant being issued. If he ever returns to Australia, he will be arrested.
I also launched a civil case against the Marist Fathers, which ended with a compensation payout and a formal apology. The voice of the child I had buried deep inside, the one silenced by fear and shame, had found some
justice.
isn’t just about your past—it’s also a call to others. What message do you hope fellow survivors take away from your story?
Woven throughout the book, I shine a light on what I call the Silencing Syndrome, a condition where the brain, in response to trauma, rewires itself in ways that deeply affect every part of a person’s being. It can lead to trauma brain, trauma bonds, cycles of abuse, narcissistic relationships, arrested development, mental health struggles, addiction, risky behaviors, and more. By exposing these hidden patterns, I aim to educate and empower. Awareness is the first step toward healing. It offers hope and proves that freedom from shame is possible. You’re launching a website and movement alongside the book. Can you tell us about “New Voiced” and what your platform will offer?
‘New Voiced’ is more than a platform—it’s a movement. It is a community, where people locked in trauma can reclaim their life’s purpose and find the courage to share their story.
The website newvoiced.com, is designed as a gentle landing place for anyone seeking healing from past wounds, empowerment to redefine their identity, or simply a safe space to reflect, feel, and begin again.
The website will also offer access to healing resources, podcast links, and opportunities to register interest for upcoming retreats and events.
You also speak professionally. What kind of audiences are you hoping to reach, and what do you want them to walk away with after hearing you speak?
My audience is diverse and deeply important to all in this generation.
We have the chance to learn from the painful mistakes of the past and create a true paradigm shift, one where silence is no longer an option and complicity is no longer tolerated. Light must be cast into the darkest corners, and the institutions that once hid the truth must now be held fully accountable.
Global research shows that 1 in 5 girls and 1 in 20 boys experience child sexual abuse. Behind every number is a human being, a life altered. My hope is that those who hear my message will walk away not only informed, but inspired—educated, encouraged, and empowered to be part of the change.
We have the chance to learn from the painful mistakes of the past and create a true paradigm shi , one where silence is no longer an option and complicity is no longer tolerated. Light must be cast into the darkest corners, and the institutions that once hid the truth must now be held fully accountable.
me through the darkest moments. I made intentional space to be still, to quiet the noise, and to pray. In those moments of stillness, I found strength, clarity, and peace. I also returned to nature again and again—to reconnect, to heal. I swam in the cool waters of the Bellinger River and at Dangar Falls. I walked barefoot along the beach, letting the earth ground me daily. These moments weren’t just rituals; they were lifelines.
Finally, what’s next for you personally and professionally as you step into this new chapter of advocacy and healing?
The five-year journey of writing Harvesting Silence has opened my eyes to a deep truth—the world is full of people carrying silent pain. For 50 years, I was one of them. Silenced. Hidden. But not anymore.
What has the response been like so far from those who’ve read early copies of the book or heard your story?
Every time someone reads or hears my story, the response is almost always the same: “Me too… and I’ve never told anyone.” That moment—when silence breaks and truth emerges—is deeply powerful. It’s also heartbreaking, because it reveals just how many are still carrying their pain in secret. Shame never belonged to the survivors; it belongs squarely with the perpetrators.
Writing such a personal and painful story must have been emotionally intense. What helped you stay grounded throughout the process?
My faith is my rock—it’s what anchored
Now, I have a voice. A powerful voice rooted in truth, shaped by justice, and driven by a purpose far greater than myself - to call to others to rise with me. To become part of New Voiced—a movement where silence ends, healing begins, and together, we reclaim our voices.
‘Harvesting Silence’ and the Website ‘New Voiced’ to be launched soon.

From 14 June to 24 August, City of Coffs Harbour’s Yarrila Arts and Museum (YAM) will host Flowers and People – A Whole Year per Hour by international art collective teamLab. It's a rare opportunity to experience this trending art phenomenon; and you don't need a ticket or a flight to see it.
For the uninitiated, teamLab is one of the most influential creative groups of our time. This Tokyo-born collective — making up global artists, engineers, designers, and thinkers has wowed audiences from New York to Singapore with mesmerising installations that blur the line between technology and nature. Their works often sell out months in advance. And now, for the very first time, they're showing in regional Australia.
Flowers and People isn't your typical art experience. It's immersive, interactive, and constantly changing.
“Bringing teamLab to Coffs Harbour is more than just an exhibition — it’s a statement. It says that regional communities deserve access to the same world-class cultural moments
You don’t need to be an art expert to appreciate beauty — this winter, one of the world’s most talked-about digital installations is landing right here in Co s Harbour.
as the big cities. We’re proud to make that happen right here at YAM.” Carrie Kibbler, Team Leader Cultural Services.
Step inside and you'll find yourself surrounded by digital blooms that bud, blossom and scatter in real time — all compressed into a one-hour loop.
Each visit is unique: no two moments are ever the same. Walk by, and petals might drift away from your presence. Standstill, and new growth appears. The artwork reacts to you. It's not a video. It's a living, breathing digital landscape created by complex programming that responds to your movements. There are no repeated sequences; just endless, organic transformation.
It's the kind of installation that feels just as good as it looks. Dreamy visuals? Tick. A moment of calm in a busy week? Absolutely. Bring your phone if you like — it's certainly camera-friendly.
But what you'll remember most is how the space makes you feel. Slower. Softer. Present. Best of all? It's completely free. No queues. No
pressure. Just drop in when it suits and stay for as long as you like.
For Coffs Harbour, this isn't just a beautiful moment...it's a big one. teamLab rarely exhibits outside of major capital cities. Their presence here speaks volumes about YAM's growing reputation and commitment to delivering world-class culture to the local community.
If you've never stepped into an art gallery before, this is your sign. No need to brush up on art theory; just bring your curiosity. It's the kind of exhibition that welcomes everyone, from lifelong art enthusiasts to first-time visitors. Come solo, bring a friend, or make a day of it with the family.
It's not every day international art pioneers walk into your backyard. Don't miss it.

an you tell us about your new venture and what inspired you to start this business together? We made the conscious decision to switch and shop at The Wellness Company (TWC) because it aligns perfectly with our values and wellness goals. TWC offers high-quality, natural, and effective products that meet the demands of today’s health-conscious consumers. For us, it was about finding a brand that shares our passion for wellness, sustainability, and authentic, clean ingredients.
What really drew us in was the opportunity for financial growth through TWC’s referral program and bonus structure. These incentives have opened the door for us to earn rewards and income simply by sharing products we believe in—transforming our passion for wellness into a sustainable business opportunity. Community support also played a significant role; TWC has built a supportive and engaged community that continually helps us stay motivated and inspired. The company’s strong focus on its core values—wellness, natural ingredients, and sustainability—resonates
deeply with us. We believe that by switching to TWC, we are not only enjoying premium products but also becoming part of a movement that promotes healthier living and environmental responsibility.
In summary, our decision to start this journey was driven by the desire for better health solutions, earning potential, and being part of a community aligned with our values.
What problem does your business aim to solve, and what makes your approach unique? The wellness industry is constantly evolving, and consumer needs are more urgent than ever—demanding products that are safe, effective, and environmentally friendly. TWC addresses this gap by creating high-quality, lowtox, natural products that meet these demands. Our approach is rooted in understanding what consumers really want—transparent ingredients, affordability, and sustainability.
But it’s not just about products. TWC emphasizes community building—creating a supportive network for both customers and business partners. We’re always refining our offerings based on feedback and market trends, ensuring we stay ahead of the curve. Our approach is genuine; we focus on empowering individuals to make healthier choices while fostering a community of like-minded people working towards common wellness and sustainability goals.
This innovative combination of high-quality products and community support sets TWC apart. It’s more than just a business model—it’s a movement towards healthier, more conscious living.
What were some of the biggest challenges you faced during the startup phase, and how did you overcome them? Every new business faces challenges, and ours was no different. One of the initial hurdles was building awareness and trust around new, low-tox products. Educating consumers about the benefits of switching to cleaner, safer alternatives was crucial. We took the time to research, learn, and share the science and benefits behind each product. We also tapped into our personal networks and social channels to spread the word authentically.
Another challenge was managing the logistics of a growing business—finding reliable suppliers, handling distribution, and balancing our daily commitments. Through patience, continuous learning, and support from the TWC community, we navigated these obstacles effectively. The key has been staying committed, proactive, and always open to feedback.
How do your different backgrounds and skills complement each other in running this business? Our partnership is a true strength. We come from diverse backgrounds that offer a well-rounded approach:
Our approach is genuine; we focus on empowering individuals to make healthier choices while fostering a community of like-minded people working towards common wellness and sustainability goals.
that pushes us forward. Combining our strengths allows us to serve our community better and grow sustainably.
What are your shortterm and long-term goals for the business?
Emma’s unique experiences and perspectives bring fresh ideas and innovative solutions to the table. Her creative mindset helps us stay dynamic in a competitive market.
Madonna’s business acumen and expertise in marketing, product knowledge, and operations ensure we stay organized, strategic, and goaloriented.
Support and motivation are the glue that keeps us going. We celebrate each other’s successes and lift each other up through challenges. Most importantly, our shared passion for wellness and entrepreneurship creates a strong vision
In the short term, our focus is on helping families make the switch to low-tox, effective products while saving money. We want to build a reputable brand that families trust and turn into a household name.
Long-term, we aim to establish a global shopping club, providing affordable, highquality products to wider audiences. Achieving financial freedom through passive income is also a key goal—so we can continue to grow, educate, and empower even more people. Ultimately, we aspire to help others reach their wellness goals and foster healthier lifestyles across communities.
As the business evolves, leadership development
and community engagement will remain at the core of our mission. We know our goals will expand, but our foundation is built on supporting health-conscious living and making a positive impact.
What advice would you give to other entrepreneurs considering a partnership?
The wellness company has over 400 products available in Australia and with online shopping and low tox products affordable and sustainable. Its products we use everyday and the figures show over a 90% retention rate. If you are interested in change and earning an additional income by referring friends, I would take a look and start with us today.
What excites you most about the future of your business? The massive growth within Australia and NZ. It’s everyday products we use but quality and cost are so affordable. I’m really excited to see households switch and save more money.
Thanks Ladies.
Janaya Sheehy discovered a love of baking for special occasions a er making a baby shower cake for a friend. Her talent is obvious, and she is working towards her dream for both herself and in honour of her late boss and friend, Jessica Boardman. We can’t wait to see what she creates next at Cakes By Nay!
Hi Janaya, tell us how your journey into baking began? Was it a childhood dream or something you discovered later in life? This was definitely something that came later in life. I made my friend’s baby shower cake and realised how much I loved it so from then on I never looked back.
What inspired you to start your own cake business?
My late boss, Jessica Boardman, whom I dearly miss and hope I’m making proud by continuing her dream. I was working alongside Jess in 2019 when I graduated till January 2020. We were just about to start making wedding cakes before we lost her. Can you walk us through your creative process when designing a custom cake?
I love this question. I will ask my customer what sort of vibe / theme they are going for. I’ll look at some pinterest ideas & my mind FLOWS with ideas so I can create something of my own with some inspiration.
Do you have a signature flavour or design that customers keep coming back for? Or is there something you’re getting asked for a lot at the moment?
Yes! Kids themed cakes, they are a massive hit! Especially Spider-Man lately. It’s so fun. I love creating kids cakes because I have
nephews, so seeing their face light up when they see their cake makes it so special. The biggest flavour? Vanilla for sure! Simple but so yummy. What have been some of the biggest challenges of running a small baking business?
It’s so fun. I love creating kids cakes because I have nephews, so seeing their face light up when they see their cake makes it so special.
Mental health struggles. Along with running my own businesses I have personal struggles with anxiety and depression. Some days can be difficult but each day is so rewarding and my dream job, working for myself? It makes it so worth it.
How has the local community supported your journey? What has the feedback been like?
AMAZING! The Bellingen and surrounding community have been so supportive, tagging me in posts, sharing my cakes, and recommending me to others! Wow, it has blown me away.
What does a typical day look like in your kitchen?
Very messy! You may see a beautiful cake but I see a massive pile of dishes behind me! I wouldn’t change it for the world though! What is one of the most unusual or
memorable cake requests you’ve ever received?
My first wedding cake for Mr and Mrs Bonventi. It was an absolute honour and my first wedding opened up so many amazing opportunities for my business! Another one would be my first gender reveal cake for a family I didn’t know! That will always stay very close to my heart. The trust from my customers is amazing.
What are your dreams or aspirations for the future with Cakes By Nay?
A coffee and cake van or shop! It is my absolute dream to have a bigger space, daily customers, and a happy, fun and loving space for my goodies.
Where can we find out more or get in touch?
Social media Cakes By Nay or here is my booking website! I would love to hear from you bakesy.shop/b/cakes-by-nay-1 Thanks Janaya.
From sci-fi film sets to second-hand treasures, Ne ie Backhouse has always had a knack for turning the everyday into something extraordinary. NOW BASED HERE IN COFFS HARBOUR, SHE’S CHANNELING HER PASSION FOR CREATIVITY, SUSTAINABILITY AND DIY REBELLION INTO PUNK ARTS COLLECTIVE—a bold, hands-on space where people of all skill levels can stitch, print, repurpose and reimagine with a punk-inspired a itude.
Hand help the environment, then that's gotta be worth some good juju, right?
The ethos of Punk Arts Collective is not just about art, but about attitude, inspired by the Punk era of the 70s and 80s. What drew you to that era creatively – and how does it still inspire you today?
I grew up in North London from the early 70s to late 90s; Camden Market was where I, and the alternative crowd, went to shop. For me, the heart and soul of punk was a DIY reaction to day-to-day life. Patched clothes weren’t so much a fashion statement as a necessity for those of us who simply couldn’t afford something new. Learning to sew enabled you to express your unique sense of style through your own experimentation. Buying second hand was a no brainer as it equalled affordability and originality. Opshopping was almost a sport.
i Nettie. Can you tell us how Punk Arts Collective first came to life?
The idea of costuming, sewing and fabrication workshops is something that has been brewing in the back of my mind for quite some time. Moving from London to Sydney, I have transitioned between careers in graphic design and costume. We have been running our successful creative agency, saso.creative, since 2000, and as things turned out, we
ended up in this big warehouse space in the centre of Coffs, and the costume and sewing bug began to tickle again. Add that to a personal vendetta against waste and Australia’s addiction to fast fashion, it all started to fall into place.
On a practical level, we offer workshops in sewing, printmaking, fabrication and other hands-on, DIY projects. We believe that these simple skills help people save money and do their bit to take a stand against waste.
Can you tell us about what you offer at Punk Arts Collective and what it’s all about?
On a practical level, we offer workshops in sewing, printmaking, fabrication and other hands-on, DIY projects. We believe that these simple skills help people save money and do their bit to take a stand against waste. Don't want to preach about environmental issues, but if you can learn some skills, save money,
In that sense, the punk ethic of the late 70s and early 80s was a forerunner to the recycling, repurposing and reimagining ethic of today.
A shocking fact: Australians are the biggest consumers of throw-away fashion in the world. Fast fashion = terrible working conditions, enviro nasty materials and poorly fitted clothes. That’s nuts.
I want to show people how to revive their favourite clothes, how to adjust and hem jeans, how to flip op-shop finds into fab fashion, how to customise throwaways and create something that can be re-used and reloved for years to come.
And if we can hum along to the Cocteau Twins or New Order or Public Image, so much the better.
Continued over...
Reimagining “trash” into something beautiful, wearable or useful is at the heart of what you do. What’s one of your all-time favourite transformations?
I can’t call anything an out-and-out favourite. It’s the moment of realisation, or discovery, when something in my brain says, you know, that old vinyl sign would make a really cool handbag — and then I go away and figure out how to do it, that’s the part I really enjoy. Everything has possibility.
I make my partner cardigans from old blankets; that’s pretty cool. The best is from a vintage pure wool dog blanket (washed of course!) only $5 from the op shop. Trouble is that dogs follow him everywhere...
One of the most useful workshops we o er is, I think, taking a pa ern from a favourite item of clothing so you can replicate it. Most people have thought I wish I could just get another pair exactly like these…
One of the most useful workshops we offer is, I think, taking a pattern from a favourite item of clothing so you can replicate it. Most people have thought I wish I could just get another pair exactly like these … Being able to take a pattern (without disassembling the original) and then reproducing it with your original stamp comes close to being a favourite project.
You’ve had an incredible career as a special effects costume fabricator working on everything from Star Wars to Janet Jackson’s Velvet Rope tour. How does that experience feed
into your work at Punk Arts Collective? Working in costume teaches you to think on your feet, to look at things differently, to see possibilities. And because everything in film and theatre comes down to budget — and costume doesn’t get allocated much — it teaches you how to minimise waste, create maximum impact from minimum spend, be practical and not to overcomplicate or overthink.
You're planning to expand into more project-based workshops in 2025.
What kinds of things can people look forward to?
Before throwing something out, look at it and imagine what it might become. en it’s just a ma er of some basic skills and trial and error. Don’t be afraid to experiment...
We definitely want to retain the basics because we’ve found that a lot of people don’t know where to start and have the idea that sewing — and printing and fabrication — is hard. It’s not. Once you have the basics down, then the learning curve is exponential. In the coming months we’ll be launching several ‘themed’ workshops. ‘Rogue’ is an idea to replicate simpler, high-end fashion from Vogue magazine — for example, replicate trousers that retail at $1000 for the price of the fabric and a little bit of time. ‘High Street Hacks' focusses on replicating fast fashion from recycled fabrics and existing clothing. We also have other less sewing-
focused workshops in the works, especially for kids and teens: journaling, zines, jewellery, that sort of thing. And writing workshops, too. Prepping for these now for a launch in a couple of months.
And, if anyone out there is interested in Cosplay, get in touch. I’m dying to help people’s Cosplay ideas come to life.
If someone wants to start living more creatively, sustainably, and with a punk spirit, what’s the first small step you'd recommend?
Think different. Before throwing something out, look at it and imagine what it might
become. Then it’s just a matter of some basic skills and trial and error. Don’t be afraid to experiment — old trousers can become skirts; shirts can be re-tailored as kids clothes; pillow cases can be reborn as bags. I think the whole ‘living sustainably’ ethic becomes overwhelming if you try to do it 100 percent in one go, and therefore you don’t do it at all. Give yourself a break. Do little bits, it all counts.
Our website is probably the best place to find current workshops, and while you’re there, sign up for our newsletter to check out what’s coming up and ideas we’re working on.

Amanda, tell us – what exactly is the upcoming Bellydance Convention all about?
The Australian Belly Dance Convention is focused on connecting dancers from across Australia and New Zealand by putting on one weekend full of amazing sessions during the day that cover topics from dance workshops through to presentations on history, culture and health. In a world where it is so easy to connect with people from across the world, we are
celebrating local and Australian talent by bringing together great teachers and performers and making a weekend that is as low cost and high value as possible.
seasoned dancers, beginners, or everyone in between?
The weekend is for everyone. Including non dancers (or as we like to call them – people who haven’t realised they are a dancer yet)!
e shows are super exciting for family, friends and the general public to come and see some amazing performances from local and interstate performers.
Plus we have a big dance party on Friday night and an amazing showcase on Saturday night which is open for anyone to come and see some of Australia’s best belly dance performers dancing their hearts out on the stage! Sounds amazing! Who is the event for –
The shows are super exciting for family, friends and the general public to come and see some amazing performances from local and interstate performers. We have performers from all over the country coming in to bring you some stunning pieces!
During the day non dancers would enjoy sessions such as “So… where do I start costuming?” on Friday which helps you work out how to create costumes for any occasion out of clothes you could find in your own wardrobe; or “Turkish Coffee Hour”
on Saturday where you can hear about the culture of Turkey from a dancers own experience; if you love to hit a drum maybe you need to catch our live drumming session “Rhythm and Motion” also on Saturday. Maybe you like to draw, in that case we would suggest that “The Art of the Pose” on Sunday might tickle your fancy where you’ll be guided in how to draw a live dancer!
What’s something people might not expect from a Bellydance Convention?
That it is so accessible for non dancers!
Belly dancing is an umbrella term for dances that are performed South-West Asian, Northern Africa and Turkey. A lot of people think of it as Egyptian dance only, but there are so many other dances from other countries that have their own individual styles, music and history that is beautifully rich and interesting to learn about as you move your body.
There are also fusions with these styles with other styles of dance. This makes the dance super easy to pick up – even if you have 2 left hips! And with so many great teachers in the area (who are all participating across the weekend), you may find yourself a new hobby
We see local dancers connect with non locals; and soon to be dancers find a new local community of people who they wouldn’t have otherwise found.
to take up!
Let’s talk about the concert – what can the audience expect?
The Australian Belly Dance Concert is shaping up to be an amazing night of performances. We have so many great local performers such as Essence of Ardour from South West Rocks, Bellydance Woolgoolga, Phoenix Rising Bellingen and Zoe Berry; being joined by dancers from across the state and interstate like Monsoon Nights (WA), Keeva (Vic), Inspire Bellydance (NSW), Amethyst Temple Fusion (SA); and a very special return of Xaeda and Sacred Lotus Bellydance formerly of Coffs Harbour (now QLD).
With almost 30 performances containing almost 50 dancers, it is going to be a night out that no one in Coffs and Sawtell will want to miss!
How can people get involved or buy tickets?
If you are interested in attending a session during the day – you can look up all the details on our website to find a session that suits you, or you can come and visit us at the RSL on the weekend of July 11th to 13th and we can help you.
To get a ticket to the show jump on our website – bellydanceconvention.com.au concert Tickets are $50, and every seat has a great view of the show. You can grab a meal at the Sawtell RSL bistro, do a spot of shopping with the marketplace stalls that will line the room and then sit back with your friends to watch these amazing performers.
Final word to the community?
One of the best things about running this event is that we get to visit all the amazing pockets of Australia where belly dance lives. We get to meet amazing locals (dancers and non-dancers), watch stunning performances and hear amazing stories. We see local dancers connect with non locals; and soon to be dancers find a new local community of people who they wouldn’t have otherwise found. Every single person who attends any part of the weekend walks away with something special, from a new friend to a whole new way to spend 1 hour a week. Making all these connections is the magic of the convention and the magic of dance. We look forward to meeting all of you across the weekend of July 11th to 13th.
Thanks Amanda.
Activities focus around The Hub, a series of architecturally designed decks that allow visitors to relax and enjoy the forest canopy views while also providing access to Guulabaa’s visitor experiences.
Families looking for a day out can enjoy a picnic or visit the Bunyah Café and meet the Big Koala, a 2.5m-high sculpture painted by Pauline Roods, part of the region’s Hello Koalas Sculpture trail. There are comfortable bushwalks nearby where visitors might see one of the region’s koalas in its native habitat or book a visitor experience at Koala Conservation Wild Breeding Guulabaa. Here, visitors learn about these shy marsupials while viewing some of the resident koalas. They’ll also meet the carers who rehabilitate sick and injured koalas brought in for treatment.
For those seeking a more active experience, Wildnets Adventure Park offers Australia’s largest suspended playground. With rope- and net-based adventures scaled safely for the ages 3 and up, you can compete challenges, play in the treetops or ride a zipline.
Soon the Bunyah Bilbay Cultural Centre run by the Bunyah Local Aboriginal Land Council will also be opening, along with the Guulabaa Cathedral gathering space, both offering bookable function spaces too.
Guulabaa – Place of Koala on the NSW Mid North Coast is a special place. Set within Cowarra State Forest, Guulabaa, meaning ‘Place of Koala’ in the local Gathang language, offers a unique blend of conservation, cultural storytelling, and eco-tourism. Visitors experience elevated timber walkways, immersive educational spaces, and First Nations-led narratives that deepen understanding of wildlife, heritage and environmental stewardship – now recognised in Guulabaa’s latest international award win.
In ‘big news’ Guulabaa – Place of Koala has now been recognised as a global exemplar of conservation-led design, Indigenous collaboration and resilient land stewardship, winning an Urban Land Institute (ULI) 2025 Asia Pacific Award for Excellence in Hong Kong. The Urban Land Institute is a global organisation with a mission to shape the future of the built environment for transformative impact in communities worldwide. The Asia Pacific Branch’s Awards for Excellence are among the region’s most respected honours in real estate and urban development, celebrating projects that raise the bar for design quality, sustainability, and positive community impact.
Guulabaa is one of only twelve winners across the Asia Pacific, and one of just two from Australia to be recognised this year.
Guulabaa – Place of Koala was conceived in direct response to the catastrophic 2019–20 Black Summer bushfires, which impacted koala habitats across the region. Developed by the Forestry Corporation of NSW and designed by global architecture and design firm Gensler, the project is grounded in deep collaboration with First Nations communities, from integrating traditional cool burning practices to reduce bushfire risk and restore forest health, to
sharing of culture and language. This approach also enabled the use of local sustainably sourced native hardwoods in construction, setting a benchmark for ecologically responsible and culturally informed design.
“Guulabaa challenged us to rethink what regenerative architecture should be. It is not about making a bold statement, but about designing with care, deep listening, and respect for Country,” said Ken McBryde, design director at Gensler Australia. “This project shows what is possible when we listen to our client, stakeholders, project partners, and First Nations knowledge holders, and design with long-term
Guulabaa now serves as a flagship model for forestbased conservation infrastructure in Australia. It has inspired four additional forest tourism sites across NSW and demonstrates how design, Indigenous knowledge and environmental stewardship can come together to protect biodiversity, support sustainable tourism, and create places of lasting impact.

impact in mind. We are honoured that ULI has recognised that vision.”
Kathy Lyons, Senior Manager, Country & Community at Forestry Corporation, agrees.
“Guulabaa is about more than protecting koalas. It brings people together, across generations, cultures and disciplines to care for Country and build a shared future where nature and community thrive.”
“Its success is already inspiring similar projects across New South Wales, and this ULI award recognition affirms that this model is both powerful and scalable when approached with care and respect.”

Growing up, I saw many of the people I cared about silently struggling with their mental health. Support wasn’t easily available or openly spoken about in our community. Seeing this, I made a personal commitment to be someone who could walk alongside others during the tough moments, someone who could hold hope when it felt out of reach. Now, as a Psychologist, I provide support for adolescents and adults, offering a calm and inclusive approach, shaped by a strong respect for the body-mind connection. What inspired the creation of the clinic? Reflective Psychology was founded four years ago, in response to a few big needs we saw in our local community. After many years working as a Clinical Psychologist in Coffs Harbour, I wanted to create a space where high-quality mental health care was accessible to everyone. Together, we’ve carefully built a collaborative and supportive team of highly-qualified, evidencebased and experienced clinicians, with diverse professional backgrounds.
Given our various areas of expertise, we are able to give our clients an experience of therapy that really works, with a clinician they really like and “click with”.
How does the clinic aim to make a difference in the community? What makes us unique is
our collaboration within the broader healthcare community in Coffs Harbour, by providing professional and clinical supervision services, organisational consulting, and trauma-informed mental health training across the health and mental healthcare sectors. Most of our clinicians also work within the not-for-profit and public healthcare sectors, strengthening their knowledge and clinical experience, and building strong professional relationships across the region. You’re never just another appointment to us at Reflective Psychology. We take the time to understand you as an individual, your goals, preferences, needs and pace. Our clinic environment is warm, respectful and flexibleso that whatever you’re facing, we can work through it together, in a way that works for you. We are a team with kindness, care and expertise at its heart.

What makes Saige Ultrasound different from other imaging providers?
At Saige Ultrasound, we specialise exclusively in antenatal and gynaecology imaging, offering expert care in obstetric and complex gynaecological ultrasound. Our reporting specialists are obstetricians and gynaecologists who experience first-hand on a daily basis the crucial role ultrasound has in women’s health. We aim to ensure that women and their care providers have the most accurate ultrasound and detailed report to help manage their health. And whilst we focus on clinical accuracy, we also focus on creating a calm, respectful, and empowering environment tailored to each woman’s stage of life.
Who performs the scans?
All ultrasounds are performed by senior sonographers highly experienced in obstetric and gynaecological imaging. Our doctors are specialist obstetricians and gynaecologists who have advanced training in women’s imaging, with our local gynaecologist Dr Aaron Budden undertaking all ultrasound procedures. Whether you’re attending for early pregnancy reassurance, detailed morphology, or gynaecological assessment, you’re in expert hands.
Can I bring a support person?
Absolutely. We encourage you to bring a part-
ner or support person whether you are having your first pregnancy scan, a detailed baby assessment, or a gynaecology ultrasound. Our beautifully designed rooms enhance comfort and connection, especially during pregnancy scans.
How do I book an appointment?
Start with ensuring you have a referral from your GP or specialist so our team can ensure we answer the question your doctor asks. You can then call us directly to choose a time that suits you with online bookings coming later this year.
What makes the Saige Health approach to women’s health care unique?
Dr Kristen: I think what is exciting is that we are coming together to utilise all aspects that of our clinical skills, continued medical education, lived experience and community connection to help inspire, nurture, facilitate care and educate.
We aim to meet individuals where they are at and to meet their unique needs. We know that in regional areas access to health services is limited so we are offering more choice in the way of care options within a safe and supportive environment.
We know that midwives, obstetricians, gynaecologists, family doctors and patients can all approach reproductive health, fertility, pregnancy, birth and parenthood in different ways. Working together and learning from each other to optimise outcomes is something we are very passionate about at Saige.
Dr Rene: It’s unique because of the integrated and cohesive model of care. By bringing together GPs, midwives, obstetricians, gynaecologists, allied health and ultrasound, we offer a seamless and collaborative experience for patients. This way we can cover a women’s entire journey from contraception and fertility through to menopause, and all the bits in-between.
Tell us about the role of an Endorsed Midwife at Saige.
Erica (Endorsed Midwife): At Saige, I provide antenatal and postnatal care, education, and support with planning your pregnancy, birth and your postpartum journey— while maintaining strong links with your birthing healthcare provider. As your Midwife I can independently manage your routine pregnancy care, while welcoming in medical, allied health or specialist support when needed. There are so many care options and I can help you work out what’s right for you and your family.
Can people access all this support even if they’re not pregnant yet?
YES, definitely! I strongly believe the parental journey begins with the intention. Health outcomes are greatly improved when parental health is optimised. Addressing physical, psychological and lifestyle factors before
conception can not only improve the chances of a heathy pregnancy but also the quality of life and strength of supportive relationships for those who care for that baby. It’s also a good time for sexual health screening and discuss preconception tests if required.
What if someone is dealing with something like pelvic pain or abnormal bleeding?
Dr Kristen: While we’re not an emergency service, we can manage many of these concerns in a calm and supportive setting.Having access to on-site imaging and specialist input is a huge benefit. For example, early pregnancy can be a time of uncertainty—especially for people with a history of infertility, miscarriage or birth trauma. We aim to investigate symptoms thoroughly, while also offering emotional support and a nurturing environment to help foster healing. What happens after the baby is born?
Erica: Those early days and weeks (the ‘baby bubble’) are special. This time can be both beautiful and a little overwhelming adjusting to the new rhythm, and that’s why planning for the postpartum period during pregnancy is so important. I can visit you at home or in clinic from those early days to anytime up to around 8 weeks after birth.
How can people book in or find out more?
Dr René: Call us directly, and Tess, Madi or Tori will help you with your booking. If you need to see a gynaecologist or are needing a pelvic ultrasound you will need a referral from your regular GP. Our GP’s can also make inhouse referrals, and Erica our Midwife can do ultrasound referrals.

Commencing on the 1st of July 2025, eligible Australians will have access to a free lung cancer screening scan under the National Lung Cancer Screening Program (NLCSP). Beachside Radiology is proud to be participating in the National Lung Cancer Screening Program in partnership with Lung Screen. The NLCSP is a government-funded initiative aimed at detecting lung cancer in its early stages, before any symptoms develop.
Patients must meet the following criteria to be referred for a low-dose CT screening scan on a valid referral form:
Be aged between 50 and 70 years
Show no signs or symptoms of lung cancer
Have a history of at least 30 pack-years of cigarette smoking
Be still smoking or have quit in the past 10 years
A pack-year is a way of measuring how much a person has smoked over time. It is calculated by multiplying the number of cigarette packs smoked per day by the number of years the person has smoked.
Examples of 30 pack-years:
• 1 pack (20 cigarettes) per day for 30 years
• 2 packs (40 cigarettes) per day for 15 years
How will I know when I am due for my next scan?
Your GP will enrol you in the program via the NCSR and confirm your preferred contact method. The NCSR will send reminders when your next scan is due. Ongoing follow-up is shared between you and your doctor.

an you tell us about your business? Spring to Mind: Counselling & Wellbeing, is located at the Innovation Hub (CHEC) in Coffs Harbour. I’ve established a therapy space designed to be an inviting environment - a wellness sanctuary for self-reflection, healing, and personal growth. My motto is: Nurture wellbeing, cultivate growth, and flourish with Spring to Mind.
I support children and adults from diverse backgrounds facing mental health challenges such as anxiety, depression, grief, significant life changes, psychosocial difficulties, and disability. I employ a blend of evidence-based and human-centred therapeutic methods, including Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, existentialism, and expressive arts therapies. My focus is on providing trauma-informed and culturally sensitive approaches that promote self-reflection and personal growth. As a native of Spain, who has called Australia home for nearly two decades, I offer therapeutic support in both English and Spanish.
What’s your favourite part of the work you do? The opportunity to be creative and innovative while helping others and being my own boss. I view my work as a highly creative profession. With a background as a multidisciplinary artist and Master’s level training in dramatherapy and counselling, I find
fulfilment in developing personalised strategies that enable clients to thrive and achieve their therapeutic goals. By being present and actively listening to my clients, I engage in a dynamic, creative process that is both meaningful and rewarding. It’s great to see clients grow and succeed through this collaborative journey. Who is your greatest influence in business? I admire all trailblazing women in business who persist in making their dreams a reality. There is not enough space to name all the amazing women I admire, but I would like to mention a super woman and fellow traveller I met whilst working in Bourke called Stephanie Dale; she is a journalist who, on her quest to find herself whilst travelling solo in the Australian outback, ended up inspiring thousands of women. Her story exemplifies resilience, creativity, and the power of pursuing one’s passions.
What do you love about living and working on the Coffs Coast? I love the vibrant lifestyle here - beautiful beaches, lush bushland, mountains, festivals, and diverse activities keep life exciting. The warm, welcoming community is a highlight of living in Australia. Additionally, being part of the BWN and the Innovation Hub provides a strong sense of community and support, which is invaluable for my professional growth.
What piece of advice would you give women making their way in the business world? I started my business with a tiny budget and a strong passion. I utilised previous
knowledge in arts and design to create my website, including all the graphics and images. Jonnali from Naturally Rapt and local painter Sheo generously donated artworks, while my husband, Dan Sala (a former art installer at GOMA) crafted bespoke furniture. My motherin-law contributed beautiful living plants, which helped make the space warm and inviting. The women from BWN supported me with promotion and advertising. It truly felt like a leap of faith, trusting that everything would turn out okay. I feel blessed by my community! I won’t lie; business hasn’t been an easy journey. Connecting with other women in business, being genuine, and asking for advice when I felt lost have helped me navigate every hurdle along the way. Don’t hesitate to seek advice or support; there are many of us willing to help.

n a world that celebrates hustle and productivity, the simple act of slowing down can feel unnatural—or even uncomfortable. But in the rush to do more, we often miss the most important moments: the ones where we reconnect with ourselves, reflect, and allow space to breathe.
Winter is a time when our bodies naturally ask us to slow down. Yet many of us ignore that call. We push through colds, show up to work sick, and feel guilty for needing rest. But fatigue and illness aren’t signs of failure—they’re gentle signals that our body needs stillness and care.
signals. Let yourself be still. Take the time to truly rest, to do less, and be more.
Slowing down is not laziness—
As author Brené Brown wisely reminds us, “It takes courage to say yes to rest and play in a culture where exhaustion is seen as a status symbol.”
it’s a powerful act of self-care. When you allow your nervous system to reset and your mind to rest, you return to life more grounded, focused, and emotionally available.
This season, I encourage you to honour those
At Lifeline North Coast, we understand the cost of constant stress. We see how burnout, anxiety, and emotional exhaustion affect individuals, families, and communities. But we also know the power of being present—for yourself and others.
Sometimes, the most powerful thing you can offer is your full attention, without rushing to fix or solve. Just being with someone is
enough.
That same compassion starts with how you treat yourself. Slowing down is not laziness— it’s a powerful act of self-care. When you allow your nervous system to reset and your mind to rest, you return to life more grounded, focused, and emotionally available. Here are a few ways to embrace stillness in your life:
• Take regular micro-breaks throughout the day. A few minutes of silence, a short walk, or some deep breaths can restore clarity.
• Disconnect from digital distractions for an hour. Let your mind wander without a screen.
• Spend quiet time in nature—even a few moments in fresh air can ground you.
• Create a weekly ritual for rest: a long bath, a slow meal, or time with a good book.
Stillness helps us heal, think clearly, and reconnect with what truly matters.
You can help us change that by becoming a Crisis Supporter.
Lifeline Crisis Support Volunteers are the heart of our organisation. These dedicated individuals ensure no Australian faces their darkest moment alone, offering compassion, connection, and hope to those in crisis.
Every year, Lifeline answers over a million calls from people struggling with anxiety, depression, suicidal thoughts, grief, relationship issues, and more. Our volunteers are there to listen without judgment and help callers feel safe, heard, and supported.
As a Crisis Support Volunteer, you will:
• Respond to calls from people in distress
• Listen with empathy and care
• Assess risk and help create immediate safety plans
• Offer guidance, reassurance, and pathways to further support
This is a role that truly saves lives—and changes yours too. You’ll receive nationally recognised training and learn skills in crisis management, emotional resilience, and active listening that enhance both personal and professional life.
Volunteers often describe this as a deeply fulfilling and transformative experience. We welcome people from all walks of life—students, retirees, professionals—anyone who wants to make a real difference.
Lifeline North Coast is offering scholarships for Crisis Supporter training, thanks to support from local businesses and community partners.
Training starts October 2025. Apply by September 4
If you’re empathetic, compassionate, and want to give back in a meaningful way, now is the time to get involved.

Anxiety is a natural response to stress or danger, but when it becomes excessive or persistent, it can significantly impact a child’s emotional well-being and daily life. For parents, navigating a child’s anxiety can be challenging, especially when it manifests in ways that are difficult to understand or manage.
Anxiety in children can manifest in various ways, often differing from how it appears in adults. Children may not always have the words to express their feelings, and anxiety may present in physical, emotional, and behavioural ways. Recognising these signs is the first step toward providing the right support.
Some of the physical symptoms may present as complaints of stomach aches, headaches, or fatigue without a clear medical cause. The emotional symptoms you may observe are excessive worry about everyday situations, such as school, friendships or family dynamics. Fear of specific situations or objects and irritability, restlessness, and frequent crying, which may be disproportionate to the situation. Behavioural changes that may be noticeable are difficulty sleeping, clinginess or difficulty separating from parents and caregivers. Big emotional outbursts when faced with anxiety-provoking situations. Repeatedly seeking reassurance from parents and caregivers. Academic or social difficulties, anxiety may interfere with a child’s ability or reluctance to attend school, focus,
participate in class, or complete assignments. Children may also struggle to form and maintain friendships. They might avoid social situations, leading to feelings of isolation. Anxiety may place stress on family dynamics. Parents and caregivers may feel overwhelmed or unsure of how to help, while siblings may feel left out or frustrated by the attention given to an anxious child.
Parents and caregivers play a vital role in helping children manage anxiety. There are evidencebased strategies parents and caregivers can use to provide support and foster resilience, such as creating a safe and supportive environment that encourages open communication. Listen without judgment and validate your child’s feelings. Let your child know that their feelings are real and that it is okay to feel anxious, and you are there to support them. Avoid dismissing their fears, even if they seem irrational. Establishing predictable routines may provide a sense of security and reduce anxiety. Teach coping skills, such asencouraging your child to take slow, deep breaths to calm their nervous system. Mindfulness and relaxation techniques may help. Practices like mindfulness, progressive muscle relaxation, or guided imagery may help children manage

their anxiety. Use creative interventions such as drawing or storytelling to help them express their emotions. Teach problem-solving skills by encouraging your child to break down challenges into smaller, manageable steps. Encourage gradual exposure to help your child face their fears gradually, starting with less intimidating situations and building up to more challenging ones. Limit reassurance, while it’s natural to want to comfort your child, excessive reassurance may reinforce anxiety. Instead, encourage them to develop confidence in their ability to handle situations independently. Model healthy coping mechanisms, children often learn by observing their parents and caregivers. Demonstrate how you manage stress and anxiety in healthy ways, such as through exercise, relaxation, or seeking support. If your child’s anxiety significantly impacts their daily life, consider seeking professional help.
Until next time, be kind and gentle with yourself.

If you're curious about volume restoration, Xanthe also offers packages for cheek and lip enhancements. Additionally, she specialises in microneedling, also known as collagen induction therapy, a minimally invasive procedure that uses tiny, sterilised needles to create controlled microinjuries in the skin, stimulating collagen and elastin production. At Sea Movement Physiotherapy, I take a slower, more considered approach to treatment.
With over a decade of experience in the health industry, I’ve learned that real, lasting results come from truly understanding the person behind the pain. That’s why every session I offer is a full hour — giving us the time to explore not just your injury, but your goals, lifestyle, and what matters to you.
As a mobile physiotherapist based in Coffs Harbour, I bring treatment to your home — a space where you feel comfortable and where many of the challenges you face day-to-day actually occur. This community-based approach allows me to see and understand the environment
contributing to your condition, whether it’s stairs, furniture layout, or daily habits. I treat people of all ages and with a wide range of conditions, but I’ve found a particular focus and passion in aged care. Many older clients come to me after losing confidence in their movement — often following a fall, illness, or simply years of reduced activity. Through tailored physiotherapy and supportive care, I help them rebuild their strength and rediscover their independence.
Sea Movement Physiotherapy is more than just in-home treatment — it’s about building a genuine connection and creating a plan that works for you, in your life, at your pace.
If you're ready to move with confidence again, I'm here to help.
No family is ever prepared for the journey that comes with a seriously ill child. Little Wings CEO Clare Pearson shares how the organisation is helping bridge the healthcare gap for regional families, one life-changing flight at a time.
Hi Clare. For those who may not be familiar, can you give us a snapshot of what Little Wings does and why this service is so vital to rural and regional families?
Little Wings provides FREE air and ground transport for seriously ill or injured children in regional and remote NSW, ACT and QLD. In doing so, Little Wings ensures that children residing in regional locations can access the medical treatment that they need to survive and thrive… treatment that is not available locally.
Part of the magic of Little Wings is that we are a 90% volunteer-led organization… that includes 100% of our pilots and 100% of our drivers, keeping us in the air and on the road every single day of the year.
In providing the Little Wings service, we not only rebalance the regional healthcare inequities that exist but also work to keep families united during their most challenging moments. Sawtell RSL has been a long-time supporter of Little Wings. What does their ongoing support mean to your organisation?
Little Wings is an organisation run by the community, for the community. It is our volunteers that fly our planes, however, it is our great partners like Sawtell RSL that fuel the planes and make the missions possible. With
Coffs Harbour one of the busiest Little Wings destinations, having the direct and consistent support of Sawtell RSL has been a lifeline for so many local families. Further, easing the pressures of Little Wings and allowing us to assist families without hesitation.
89 seriously ill local children have directly benefited thanks to the support of Sawtell RSL. Can you share what that looks like on the ground—for the children and their families?
Coffs Harbour is one of Little Wings busiest destinations, families in desperate need and with no way of accessing the essential healthcare services that are located hours away by road… destinations that might be possible as a onceoff trip, but when you have to travel regularly and over long periods of time, the commute for essential care is deeply taxing; not only financially but the travel fatigue, the separation from healthy children/siblings and partners, the inability to work or study for the supporting parent. The implications for families caring for a seriously ill or injured child long-term are significant.
In many cases, Little Wings is there to ease that process, ensuring children can access the healthcare they require whilst also minimizing the impact on family function and unity.
On a local mission, this would see the Little Wings plane fly into Coffs Harbour Airport, the family collected without delay or long waiting periods; for sick children, in particular those who are immune compromised, the private flight is vital in reducing transmission of viruses and protecting the wellbeing of the child.
In providing the Little Wings service, we not only rebalance the regional healthcare inequities that exist but also work to keep families united during their most challenging moments.
The family will then land into the Little Wings base in Sydney or Newcastle, where their Little Wings volunteer driver will meet them and transfer them to their treating hospital.
The process is the same in reverse upon discharge.
Completely FREE and unlimited… Little Wings is there to ease the journey on every mission.
On average, a family will fly with Little Wings for 18-months, but they could fly anywhere from a few months to over a decade (Little Wings longest flying passenger).
With 89 local families being assisted by the Little Wings service, these see our planes land at Coffs
Harbour Airport approximately 5 days per week.
Little Wings is tackling one of the biggest issues in regional healthcare—inequitable access. What are the biggest barriers rural families face, and how is your team helping to bridge that gap?
Every day the Little Wings team works to raise awareness for our mission, ensuring that families that need us, know about us. We want to arm families with the language to advocate for themselves in the moments that matter, actively seeking a referral to the Little Wings service and easing the journey from the beginning of their child’s diagnosis.
All too often, we hear that families have been travelling (struggling) for long periods of time before being referred. We want to avoid this and support families from the beginning, allowing them the time and focus to care for their child and navigate the healthcare system. Little Wings continue to lobby the government and raise awareness for the Little Wings services and to assist in rebalancing the healthcare inequities that exist. This is a conversation with a long-term focus.
In 2025 and again in 2026, the NSW Health Minister, Ryan Park, has committed funds to assist with another 400 missions annually. Our hope is that this funding will be a reoccurring commitment, prioritizing regional health, especially for children.
With your mission demand increasing by 400% in recent years, how is Little
Wings adapting to this growth—and what challenges come with it?
Funding is always our biggest challenge. We work every day to raise awareness and the funds to allow us to deliver services in line with this growing demand. Every year there is a shortfall, but we do our best to never turn a family away.
Our resources, our volunteers, our partnerships with city-based and regional hospitals, safety, these are all elements that require ongoing focus and nurturing. There are so many elements that go into stabilizing a community service such as Little Wings. We are deeply grateful to have so many that support and believe in our mission, such as Sawtell RSL, keeping us in the air every single day of the year.
All of your services are provided by volunteers. What can you tell us about the people behind the missions—the pilots, the drivers, the coordinators—and what motivates them?
The volunteers are the heartbeat of our service. They show up every day with the aim to help, to make a positive difference in the lives of regional families caring for a seriously ill child… and they do this by using their time and talent in such a powerful and impactful way.
Every volunteer has a story of how they landed at Little Wings, their passion for aviation and determination to use their unique skills for the greater good, to give back.
We have volunteers that have lost a child or grandchild, spending long periods in children’s
hospitals themselves, acutely aware of the impact, worry and isolation experienced by families during these times. They will often share stories of completing every mission in honor of the loved ones lost, keeping their memory alive.
The magic of working with volunteers is that every day, people show up with a great intention and a united goal… together, we have an impact on those that need us.
Looking ahead, what are your goals for Little Wings on the Mid North Coast, and how can individuals or businesses in the region get involved or lend support?
Little Wings work closely with businesses throughout the Mid North Coast and their support has a significant impact on the local community via the Little Wings service. 100% of local donations are used to support local families.
We strongly encourage any business or groups looking to fundraise to reach out to us, helping us elevate our mission to reach those that need us, and to help us fuel our planes to see services soar in line with growing demand.
Every dollar matters, every mission transforms the life of a child and their family… and when families are strong, communities are stronger. All donations are tax deductible and can be made directly via our website at littlewings.org.au

When was the last time you watched your child be curious or creative? There are many moments of our younger children engaging in exploratory play through music, art, water activities, mud play, building with LEGO, and dance, driven by their natural curiosity. Over time our children (as we did) learn how to express their emotions, develop language skills and try out new ideas. Providing opportunities for curiosity and creativity is essential to the development of our identity, both throughout our educational journey and as we grow over time. Curiosity and creativity remain vital to our development through life and education, and they naturally involve fun. As we grow, creativity helps us explore new ideas, ask questions, and express ourselves through mediums like art and performance. Staying curious supports decision-making and turns ideas into action. In schools, this action is often shaped by the curriculum, student choice and course structure, timelines, available resources, and assessment criteria.
Across May and June, the joy shown by our children as they participated in the local Coffs Coast Eisteddfod, encompassing drama, dance, and music, has been both encouraging and a testament to their love of creativity and curiosity in the performing arts. Our Performing Arts team supported the preparation of over 200 students
from various year levels across most sections of the Eisteddfod. This highlights the strong belief we share as parents and as a school in the importance of creativity for our children.
HSC Visual Arts where students complete a body of work is a course where creativity becomes visible. Our art students dedicate hours to exploring different mediums, identifying patterns, experimenting, and ultimately transforming their ideas into impressive final pieces. While creativity can exist within structure, such as course requirements or a predetermined outcome, the true joy is found in the final gallery displays shared with families and the performances that celebrate our creative arts.
Drama performance, as showcased in our Musical Theatre course,a is another powerful example of self-expression, creativity, and curiosity explored through themes and within set guidelines. It was wonderful to see this form of creativity highlight key competencies such as collaboration and communication during the final performance night.
The complex role of education includes creative opportunities through informal moments of play and curiosity, as seen in our BDC Playgroup, EYE Festival, and Adventure Playground. However, using our frameworks as educators, we integrate these opportunities through initiatives such as our Investigation Centre for primary, creative and performing arts, inquiry, and project-based learning. Creativity and critical thinking are also
demonstrated by our inspiring teachers in HSC areas such as English Extension II, the Personal Interest Project (PIP) in Society and Culture, the Independent Research Project (IRP) in Community and Family Studies, Depth Studies in Science/History, as well as Business Studies and Languages. When children show curiosity and creativity in infancy or kindergarten, it’s often through fun, experimentation, and self-expression. Over time, this creativity can evolve into using course guides, drawing on teacher expertise, seizing opportunities, generating new ideas, leading with empathy, and continuing to learn both throughout school and as lifelong learners.
“Play is the beginning of knowledge” as expressed by George Dorsey. When you see this demonstrated through our school courses, especially in Year 9-10 World Options or our HSC courses, it becomes clear that curiosity and creativity is something we should continue to foster throughout our life and that of our children. Enjoy the creative and curious moments we see as parents and carers in our children; it is a joy to see as they thrive in the moment.

By Principal, Karin Lisle – Pathways for Every Student
At Clarence Valley Anglican School (CVAS), we believe that education should be as individual as the students we teach. Our diverse learning programs are designed to support every student on their unique academic journey, nurturing strengths, building confidence, and opening pathways to future study and career opportunities.
From Pre-Kinder to Year 12, CVAS provides a rich and inclusive learning environment where students can explore, question, and grow. Our personalised approach to education ensures that no one is left behind – whether a student thrives through hands-on learning, academic
extension, or targeted support, we tailor experiences to meet their needs.
The school’s Middle and Senior Years programs offer a broad and flexible range of electives and subjects, allowing students to follow their interests while developing skills that matter in the real world. With access to subjects in the arts, sciences, technologies, languages, and more, our students can shape their own path while receiving guidance from passionate, experienced educators.
We also take pride in our strong focus on career development. Through the Duke of Edinburgh program, school-based apprenticeships, TAFE partnerships, leadership roles, and community
initiatives, students gain practical experience and a sense of purpose beyond the classroom. Our Careers Advisor works one-on-one with students to plan for tertiary education, training or employment, empowering them to make informed decisions about life after school. At CVAS, we understand that learning doesn’t look the same for everyone. That’s why we’ve created a dynamic and supportive school culture where each student can discover their passions, overcome challenges, and work towards a future that excites them. Whether heading to university, into a trade, or exploring creative industries, CVAS students are prepared, confident and capable of making a difference.

As we celebrate 30 years of service, we reflect on how we have fostered a sense of belonging and positively impacted the broader community. Our commitment to nurturing the emotional, social, and academic growth of children extends beyond the classroom, emphasising the importance of community involvement and the ripple effect of kindness.
Building Community Connections
We believe that a sense of belonging starts in the community, and this month, we’ve been actively involved in outreach programs that build those vital connections. For instance, after the devastation caused by Cyclone Alfred, we answered a call for help from Pete’s Place, a nearby shelter, by organising a donation drive. We gathered essential items such as towels, non-perishable food, long-life milk, mozzie coils, and toiletries. This effort not only supported families in need but also instilled in our children the importance of compassion and helping others during difficult times.
A Sweet Gesture: Neighbourhood Day Excursion
A highlight this month was our Neighbourhood Day, where the children baked treats like cookies, muffins, and brownies, learning valuable skills such
as measuring and decorating. The true essence of the day was when the children, accompanied by educators, delivered these treats to local businesses, neighbours, and community members. This initiative aimed to spread kindness, foster connections, and help the children feel part of something bigger, teaching them how small acts of generosity can make a big difference and reinforce community responsibility.
Keep Kids Cozy This Winter: Join Our April PJ Drive with Friends of Dignity
With winter fast approaching, we’re excited to launch our April PJ Drive in collaboration with Friends of Dignity and 3 Bears. Our goal is to collect new pyjamas (sizes 0-16) for children living in domestic violence refuges, ensuring they stay warm and comfortable during the colder months.
By participating in these initiatives, they are learning valuable life skills, empathy, and a lifelong commitment to helping those in need.
PM daily. Additionally, our staff members are supporting this initiative by participating in weekly “mufti” (casual dress) days, with proceeds benefiting Friends of Dignity Together, we can make a meaningful difference in the lives of children who need it most, offering them warmth, comfort, and a sense of dignity. We thank you for your generosity and for helping us spread kindness throughout our community.
The Power of Kindness and Compassion
Through these outreach programs, our children have gained a deeper understanding of the struggles others face and the power of compassion. By participating in these initiatives, they are learning valuable life skills, empathy, and a lifelong commitment to helping those in need. The small acts of kindness, such as baking treats or donating pyjamas, bring warmth and connection to those who feel disconnected.
We’re calling on our service families and the Coffs Harbour community to donate new pyjamas. Donations can be dropped off at our service location between 7:30 AM and 4:00
We are proud of the continued support and involvement from our children and families, as together, we create a community where everyone feels valued, included, and cared for.
Taylor Bratton is a first-year PhD candidate at Southern Cross University. She spends most of her time either on or under the water and is passionate about advocating for the rights of fisherfolk.
After two years of scouring the globe for the perfect PhD project, I finally found it at Southern Cross University in Australia. It wasn’t just the natural beauty or the dreamy surf of the Coffs Coast that sold me, it was the opportunity to work at the National Marine Science Centre with a leading scientist on small-scale fisheries, Professor Steven Purcell. I have always been interested in invertebrate fisheries, and sea cucumbers are particularly fascinating in how they are fished and traded. Small-scale fishers, and often women, glean the shorelines throughout the Indo-Pacific to collect these wildly valuable invertebrates. They pass through the value chain to be sold for up to US$500 per kilo in China, where they are consumed as delicacies and used in traditional medicine.
Beyond their economic value, sea cucumbers provide innumerable benefits to reef ecosystems. They fight the impacts of climate change on coral reefs, help seagrasses grow, and aerate the seabed like earthworms.
In short, they’re the unsung heroes of the ocean, supporting communities, safeguarding ecosystems, and powering a multi-milliondollar industry (and some murky markets, too).
Once I came to terms with the fact that I will forever be known as Sea Cucumber Girl, my supervisor Steve and I began designing a project that integrates sea cucumber trade, conservation policy, and the livelihoods of small-scale fisherfolk.
My PhD investigates how international trade regulations under CITES (the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species) for six species of economically important sea cucumbers are affecting management, trade and livelihoods. However, we are specifically investigating these themes in the Western Indian Ocean, an area that is notably understudied but undeniably important.
It sounded too good to be true, and there was just one catch: as an American student researching African fisheries at an Australian uni, there weren’t many scholarships available. And I couldn’t start without one.
Enter stage right: Rotary
In short, they’re the unsung heroes of the ocean, supporting communities, safeguarding ecosystems, and powering a multimillion-dollar industry (and some murky markets, too).
That’s when I discovered the Rotary Foundation Global Grant Scholarship, a lesser-known scheme in international postgraduate research funding. Rotary International is a global service organisation dedicated to humanitarian action, peacebuilding, education, and environmental protection, while at the local level it is known for its community projects and grants.
While the application process is long, complex, with a lot of ‘checks and balances’ along
the way, it's a scheme that fit with my qualifications and research plan. So I started cold calling over 30 Rotary Clubs in Southern California. One replied.
The Del Mar Solana Beach Rotary Club was hesitant at first, but after five months of collaborating on my scholarship application, they ultimately welcomed me with open arms. I joined them as an honorary member, attended their 6:30am meetings almost every Friday, helped with fundraising events, and learned the ins and outs of the Rotary Foundation and Global Grant Scholarships.
A hiccup, a Hail Mary, and a hilarious bike ride
After months of effort, we hit a roadblock. The Del Mar Solana Beach Rotary Club needed to contribute US$10,000 toward my scholarship funding, which they didn’t have. I was back at square one. With the deadline looming, I needed a creative solution.
So I strapped on a helmet, grabbed a GoPro, and launched the Cycle for Sea Cucumbers Ocean-a-thon, a two-day ride down the California coast to raise the funds myself. Along the way, I stopped at 15 marine science ‘landmarks’, livestreamed quirky science videos, and invited people to pledge donations per stop.

1. Pier Review — exploring the marine life under SoCal’s iconic piers.
2. What’s the Catch? — chatting with local fishers on the rocks.
3. Cool as a (Sea) Cucumber — And yes, I did
interview a sea cucumber at the aquarium.
By the end of the ride, I had raised nearly US$8,000 and the Del Mar Solana Beach Rotary Club stepped in to cover the rest. With that, my application could advance to the Rotary District level, and eventually to the Rotary Foundation, where it was matched not once but twice, totalling AU$80,000 in funding for my PhD scholarship.
Once I came to terms with the fact that I will forever be known as Sea Cucumber Girl, my supervisor Steve and I began designing a project that integrates sea cucumber trade, conservation policy, and the livelihoods of smallscale fisherfolk.
Next stop: Tanzania! Now, I’ve been successful in securing a Fulbright Scholarship to conduct an in-depth case study in Tanzania. There, I’ll spend six

months of my PhD investigating how CITES listings are shaping trade routes, management strategies, and the livelihoods of fisherfolk involved in the sea cucumber trade.
My study will make sea cucumbers, and the people who depend on them, impossible to ignore!
VALLEY PRESCHOOL
As a familiar face in the Upper Orara community, Stevie King’s recent appointment as Director of Valley Preschool marks a new chapter for the much-loved local service. With a strong vision for connection, creativity and community-led learning, she’s ready to lead Valley into a bright and nurturing future.
Hi Stevie. How does it feel to step into the position of Director at the Valley preschool?
It feels incredibly special. Valley Preschool has such strong roots in our community, and I’m honoured to step into this role. It’s a joy to support our passionate team, connect with local families, and help lead the service into its next chapter.
As someone who’s already an active member of the local community, how has your connection to the community shaped your approach to your new role?
Being part of this community has given me insight into what local families truly value: connection, care, and trust. That understanding really shapes the way I lead. I aim to ensure Valley continues to be a place where children and families feel welcomed, supported, and heard. One of the most heart-warming parts of stepping into this role
has been seeing how quickly people come together to support the preschool. Whether through fundraising, volunteering, or simply spreading the word.
What are some of your hopes and goals for the preschool in your first year as Director?
This year, I want to strengthen our relationships with families, support our educators’ professional growth, and further develop our nature-based learning environment. I also hope to boost community engagement and bring fresh energy to projects that enrich children’s learning. We’ve already hit the ground running with our first fundraiser, our Mother’s Day Raffle. We were absolutely overwhelmed
We want children to feel secure, confident, and curious. Valley is a place where children are encouraged to explore, take risks, build friendships, and develop a lifelong love of learning.
by the generosity of local businesses who donated prizes and the amazing community support that helped us raise over $900 for new play equipment. It was a huge success and a beautiful reminder of what we can achieve together. On top of that, one of our incredible preschool parents, Chris from Potters Mini Earthworks, volunteered his time to drive the machinery to move 18 cubic metres of soft fall for our new play space. It was epic to watch and such a great show of community spirit.
Valley is a not-forprofit preschool — how does that model influence the day-to-day running of the centre and your priorities as a leader? Being a not-for-profit means that every decision we make is focused on what’s
best for the children and our families. All funds go straight back into improving our environment, resources, and supporting our team. We’re not driven by profit; we’re driven by purpose. It also means we work closely with our community, which fosters a real sense of ownership and collaboration. I also must recognise our wonderful committee, a dedicated group of volunteers who have helped create an environment where everyone feels welcomed, supported, and valued. Their vision and energy have already led to big, positive changes for the preschool and are paving the way for a bright, strong future for Valley.
Can you describe the kind of environment you aim to create for the children at Valley Preschool?
I want our preschool to feel like a second home — calm, safe, joyful, and inspiring. Our program is deeply grounded in play, nature, and relationships. We want children to feel secure, confident, and curious. Valley is a place where children are encouraged to explore, take risks, build friendships, and develop a lifelong love of learning. The outdoor environment is particularly important to us, and we’re working hard to keep improving it so the children have even more opportunities to engage and grow.
What are some of the unique challenges and rewards of running a small preschool in a rural setting like Upper Orara?
Running a small rural preschool in Upper Orara is incredibly rewarding, our natural environment is inspiring, and our community is full of heart. But one of our greatest challenges is being unable to pay our educators what they truly deserve. These incredible professionals bring knowledge, warmth, creativity, and care to every day. They support children’s learning, wellbeing, and development in ways that change lives.
We believe passionately that they deserve to be paid well above award wages, because their work is valuable, complex, and deeply impactful. Unfortunately, as a small, notfor-profit service, we simply don’t have the financial capacity to match what larger, wellfunded centres can offer.
This challenge is made harder by the Early Childhood Education and Care Worker Retention Payment, which excludes preschools like ours. Our educators deserve better: fair recognition, fair wages, and the support to keep doing the incredible work they do every day.
Are there any particular programs, creative projects or community collaborations you’re excited to introduce or expand?
Yes! We have big plans to continue developing our outdoor space, which is already off to a fantastic start thanks to recent support from our families and local businesses. We’re also hoping to expand our sustainability programs,
offer more hands-on gardening experiences, and invite in more local community members to share their skills and stories with the children. Whether it’s collaborating with First Nations educators, local artists, or older residents in the area, we’re always looking for ways to make learning rich, diverse, and deeply connected to the world around us.
For parents who are thinking about enrolling their children, what do you think sets Valley Preschool apart?
Valley is a small, nurturing, and truly personal preschool. Every child is known, valued, and supported to grow at their own pace. Our experienced educators create a welcoming space where children thrive through nature play and rich, responsive relationships. We’re also deeply connected to our community — families often say they feel like part of something bigger when they join Valley. It’s not just a preschool — it’s a village.
How can we find out more or get in touch?
We’d love to hear from you! Call us on 02 6653 8600 to arrange a tour — we’re happy to show you around and answer any questions. You can also find us on Facebook and in local groups. Our exciting new website is coming soon, so stay tuned and discover what makes Valley Preschool so special. Thanks Stevie.

WITH RUTH SIWINSKI
Ikeep hearing about changes to Buy Now Pay Later (BNPL), will that affect my chances of getting a home loan?
Yes, it could. New regulations mean BNPL products now appear more clearly on your credit report, and lenders may treat them like other forms of debt. Defaults and late payments can also now impact your credit rating, which could reduce your borrowing power. If you’re planning to apply for a loan, it’s smart to tidy up or close unused BNPL accounts. Do I need a 20% deposit to buy a home?
Not necessarily. First-home buyers may be eligible for government schemes allowing a 5% deposit without needing
to pay Lenders Mortgage Insurance (LMI). A few lenders now also offer 15% deposit options without LMI, or you can simply pay the LMI cost upfront or roll it into the loan. Plus, if you work in a medical, essential services, or other professional service field, many lenders will accept a lower deposit with no LMI at all.
Is now a good time to refinance?
With interest rates starting to drop, now’s an ideal time to reassess, especially if it’s been a while. I recommend a home loan health check every 12 months, but recent rate cuts make it even more worthwhile to review your options now. Got a question? I’m always happy to help—no jargon, just real answers.

Traditionally one of the busiest times of the year for our firefighters. As the cold weather continues, firefighters typically see an increase in house fires compared with the rest of the year.
From 1 June to 30 August 2024, more than 1000 fires broke out in NSW homes, killing 12 people and injuring more than 100 others.
Disturbingly, in 44 per cent of winter home fires there was no working smoke alarm or the alarm failed to alert when the fire broke out. With these sobering statistics in mind, it’s vital we all know how to stay fire safe over winter.
I urge all Coffs Coast residents to familiarise themselves with the safety tips detailed on the Fire and Rescue NSW website.
Here are some of them:
Smoke alarms. Only working smoke alarms save lives. Test that your smoke alarm/s are working. If not, change the batteries or replace the alarm.
Check the smoke alarm is in date – they have a lifespan of 10 years.
Escape plans. Having a home escape plan in conjunction with a working smoke alarm will greatly increase your chances of getting out
safely.
If there’s a fire in your home, do not wait. Get out and stay out and then call Triple Zero (000). Never go back inside a burning building.
Remember to consider the special needs of children, the elderly or people with a disability when developing your escape plan.
Kitchen safety. The leading cause of home fires in NSW is leaving cooking unattended.
Stay in the kitchen while cooking and turn off the stove before you leave.
Avoid cooking under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
Flammable materials such as aerosols, cleaning agents and cooking oils should be stored away from heat.
Keep loose clothing, fabrics, tea towels, curtains and flammable items away from the stove.
Keep your oven, rangehood and grill clean
and in good working order – a buildup of grease and fat can ignite a fire. Keep matches and lighters out of reach of children.
Disturbingly, in 44 per cent of winter home fires there was no working smoke alarm or the alarm failed to alert when the fire broke out.
Heaters. Ensure everything is kept a metre from the heater. Check your electric and gas heaters before you use them. If you suspect a fault, have the item checked by a qualified repairer, or replaced.
Check all cords for fraying and damage. Plug heaters directly into wall sockets only.
Do not overload powerboards.
Electric blankets. Test your electric blanket before use by laying it on top of your bed, feeling the internal wires for any abnormalities and inspecting cords/controls for damage. Turn it on for five minutes and then feel for any uneven hot spots. If you notice any issues, the electric blanket should be replaced.
I encourage everyone to stay fire safe this winter by checking your home for potential hazards and by always remaining vigilant.

We sat down with Ashlee Downton and Troy Pinder from McGrath sales team to talk about one of their listings to hit the market - 117 Bald Hill Road, Macksville, a rare 56-hectare landholding in the picturesque Nambucca Valley that blends lifestyle, legacy and limitless potential.
Can you tell us a bit about this property and what makes it stand out in today’s market? This is a true generational farm, set across approximately 138 acres (56 hectares). The appeal lies in the combination of space, privacy and potential. With two separate homes, flexible R5 and RU1 zoning, and subdivision options (STCA), it offers exceptional value—especially being just five minutes from Macksville CBD.
What are some of the standout features? There are two character-filled residences, each ideal for extended family, dual living or
income potential. The land is mostly cleared and gently undulating, making it suitable for grazing, hobby farming or lifestyle ventures. The property is fully fenced and features three dams, town water connection, established gardens and provides a peaceful rural aesthetic.
Who do you think this property will appeal to? This listing will speak to a broad range of buyers. For developers, the subdivision potential (STCA) in a growing region is a major drawcard. For lifestyle buyers, it offers space, comfort, and flexibility. It’s also ideal for multi-generational families, investors, or those looking to establish a rural
or retreat-style business.
Is there a favourite area of the property for you? The original cottage is rich in warmth and charm, with timber floors, multiple living spaces and a large deck overlooking the gardens. The homestead features timber detailing, French doors, generous living spaces, and a wraparound verandah that invites you to slow down and soak up the serenity. Ultimately, the land itself is the standout—offering freedom, functionality and long-term opportunity.
Can you explain the zoning and land use potential? The property is zoned R5 (Large Lot Residential) and RU1 (Primary
Production)—approximately 82 acres is RU1, and 56 acres is R5, giving it outstanding flexibility for future subdivision or diverse land use. Whether it’s grazing cattle, running a small agri-business, or building out further infrastructure, the groundwork is already laid. How would you describe the surrounding area? Peaceful, green and full of potential. Macksville is rapidly becoming a go-to location for buyers seeking lifestyle with access to amenities. You’ve got schools, a hospital, shops and essential services just minutes away. Plus, you’re close to the Nambucca River, and within reach of some of the Mid North Coast’s best beaches and national parks. What kind of lifestyle does this propery
offer? A relaxed and flexible one. It’s well suited to families seeking space, buyers wanting a tree change, or those looking to run livestock or a rural business. Whether you’re interested in growing your own produce, hosting guests, or simply enjoying wide open space—this property offers the scope to do it all.
Are there any buyer trends this property taps into? Absolutely. There’s increasing demand for multi-generational living, flexible work-from-home solutions, and land that offers lifestyle and income. Buyers are also becoming more savvy—wanting long-term value and zoning flexibility. This property is ahead of that trend—it’s future-proofed, while still feeling like home.

Here’s my straight-talking advice for couples looking to break into the market, with tips that focus on smart searching, smart buying and long-term thinking.
1. Know What You Can Afford
• Meet with a mortgage broker early
They’ll help you understand your borrowing power and lending options—especially useful with recent changes to interest rates and lending criteria. Good brokers will help you formulate a savings plan so that you will be in a position to purchase in the future.
• Budget for the extras
Include stamp duty (you may qualify for first-home exemptions), legal fees, building and pest inspections, and some buffer for surprises.
• Be realistic about repayments
Make sure your lifestyle can absorb your loan commitments without stretching every dollar.
2. Search with Strategy, Not Emotion
• Focus on location first
You can renovate a kitchen, but you can’t move a house. Focus on growth corridors and locations close to amenities and services you value.
• Watch out for risk zones
Use local council tools to check for flood or bushfire risk—essential here on the Coffs Coast.
• Compare sales, not just asking prices
Recent sold prices give you a clearer view of the real value.
• Secure pre-approval
This makes your offer stronger and prevents heartbreak if you fall for a property outside your budget.
• Have your solicitor ready to go
Time is crucial once you’re ready to offer— don’t scramble at the last minute.
• Always get a building and pest inspection
It’s a small investment that can uncover costly hidden issues.
4. Negotiate Like a Pro
• Don’t start too low
Lowballing can backfire. Offer fairly and leave room for movement.
• Ask what matters to the seller
Sometimes it’s not all about price—settlement timing or terms can sway things your way.
• Don’t get too attached
Keep your emotions in check. Walk away if it’s not right.
5. Renovate Wisely, Not Hastily
• Start with affordable wins
Fresh paint, lighting and new flooring offer great bang for buck.
• Tackle kitchens and bathrooms later
They’re key to adding value but come with hefty costs—plan and stage your upgrades.
• DIY within your limits
YouTube is helpful, but poor finishes will hurt your resale later.
