COVER STORY
Brad M Collins
Talented multi-media artist, Brad M Collins is one of the headline artists of this year’s ArtWalk ‘Out of this World’ event. Focus sat down with cover star Brad to talk through his unique creativity and the opportunity to showcase his artistic prowess at ArtWalk this month.
Hi Brad. It’s such a pleasure to meet you. Can you tell us a little about yourself as an artist?
Hey Sarah, thanks for having me! I’m a multidisciplinary artist based in Lake Cathie. I work across a whole range of mediums, from oil, acrylic or spray paint to digital illustration and photo/video. I really enjoy being flexible to change it up to suit the environment or project I’m on and to be able to express my ideas in different formats.
When did you first develop a love of illustrating and your unique art form and who inspires you creatively?
I loved to draw cartoon characters as a kid, but I actually forgot all about art through my teens and early twenties while I was busy playing drums. In my mid twenties I moved to Amsterdam for a couple of years, where I worked and lived in a hostel. As part of that job, I had to draw on a chalk board every day to promote whatever guest activity was going on. The drawing would only be on the board for a day, but after doing it consistently, it became my favourite part of the shift. I would save it for last and spend hours on my drawings for the pub crawl, movie night, or red light district tour that was happening the next day. This process really reignited my love for drawing. I get a lot of inspiration directly through artists, especially those who do the dance between the street art, illustration and gallery world, but I’m also hugely inspired by music, film and my creative friends and partner. I feel very privileged to be a part of such a supportive and creative community on the Mid North Coast. I get
inspired just by seeing my friends work on their passions, whether it’s art, music, photography or cooking. Special shoutout to Anne de Nooijer, Chris Proctor, Sara-Jayne Prince (Archive MNC), Little Kng, Joey Leigh Wagtail, Mikk, Kiata Mason, Blackdog Ink, Piece Of Mind, Home At Roto… and many more…
Your work shows such depth, almost questioning the status-quo and you do enjoy exploring with colour. Can you tell us how your choice of subject matter adds meaning and purpose in your work?
Thanks! My subject matter is usually a light-hearted way of sneaking in a deeper message. In my oil paintings I like to reflect on existential themes like life, death, human relationships and inner retrospection. These can be heavy topics, so when I incorporate an anthropomorphic pelican into a self portrait, it immediately lightens the mood and normalises any deep place we may feel hesitant to go. My work is all rooted in deep human emotions, but I’m taking you on a slightly humorous, surreal detour to get there.
culture. As one of the headline artists, how can patrons be expected to be immersed in the creative experience this year?
ArtWalk has a great way of bringing out all of the creatives of our region to put on a huge show. You can join in on a workshop, watch live art, have a dance, get your mind blown by Tortuga’s performers and really embrace and celebrate the diverse talent and creativity that we’re lucky to live amongst.
When the arts community is cherished and celebrated, the council can get more funding, more art gets made and we all get to enjoy a more colourful and vibrant life.
ArtWalk 2025 is set to be bigger and better this year with an ‘Out Of This World’ theme to it. This year’s instalment is set to take people on a cosmic journey through the heart of Port Macquarie, where art spills into the streets, transforming the town into an interstellar celebration of creativity and
I’ll be doing some live painting in the Youth Precinct in Philips Lane where I recently painted a mural as part of a council project to activate the laneway. Live painting alongside other artists, while bands play at the end of the laneway sounds like a perfect night to me. As the event grows, the participating artists and the small but powerful council team behind the event, continue raise the bar and put on a new and exciting experience every year, so if you enjoy yourself and find a new artist you love or see a performance that blew your mind, remember to be a part of the action and tell them you love their work (or buy your favourite piece!), clap for a little longer or say thanks to some of the ArtWalk team for pulling off this mammoth effort. When the arts community is cherished and celebrated, the council can get more funding, more art gets made and we all get to enjoy a more colourful and vibrant life.
How does the event each year provide
an invaluable platform for local artisans and creatives to showcase their talent and works to our diverse community?
I see ArtWalk as a celebration of the arts and a reminder of the role it plays in our community. Creating art can be a solitary practice a lot of the time, so it’s nice for the artists to have a night to crawl out from their studios and engage with such a large, enthusiastic audience. Artists of all levels get a chance to showcase their work and mingle! ArtWalk is a unique event that offers a lot of artists their first steps towards exhibiting their works and that’s exactly what it did for me five years ago!
What is on the horizon for you as an artist for the year ahead?
I’m currently finalising a solo exhibition for Off The Kerb Gallery, in Melbourne. Late last year I held a pop-up exhibition in Port Central with Chris Proctor, titled “The Deeper You Go, The Weirder It Gets”. We’re excited to announce we’re creating another exhibition together which will be next door, in the slightly larger venue, The Glasshouse! I’m really excited about both opportunities! In the meantime, I’m also hosting an open studio as part of the Hastings Art Trail, during the ArtWalk weekend. You can find me on Instagram, Facebook or my website. @bradmcollins @bradmcollinsvisuals bradmcollins.com. Thanks Brad.

ArtWalk 2025
After the impact of the wet weather event on the Mid North Coast, ArtWalk 2025 will be more than a celebration of art and culture - it’s a tribute to the resilience of our region and the spirit of our community.
4 JULY 5PM-9PM
ArtWalk 2025Out Of WorldThis
As the sun sets on Friday 4 July, Port Macquarie’s CBD will once again come alive with light, creativity, and community spirit.
ArtWalk 2025 is set to transform our town into a vibrant canvas, marking its ninth year as one of the region’s most loved and anticipated community arts events.
From its humble beginnings in 2016 to becoming a permanent fixture on our cultural calendar, ArtWalk has stood the test of time, and continues to inspire, connect and celebrate the creative heartbeat of our community.
“This is an event that brings people together in such a unique way. It’s more than just art on display - it’s creativity in motion, shared experiences, and stories told in the streets,” said Mayor Adam Roberts. “ArtWalk represents everything we love about living here - colour, community and culture - and I’m incredibly proud to see it enter its ninth year, stronger than ever.”
Council has proudly led the delivery of ArtWalk since its inception, championing the arts as a vital part of a liveable and vibrant community. This year’s theme, ‘Out of This World,’ invites
visitors to explore a universe of creativity - from celestial projections to immersive installations and interactive moments curated by local and visiting artists.
In a major new addition for 2025, Phillips Lane will host The Youth Precinct - an energetic and inclusive space developed by Council in partnership with The Cage and headspace Port Macquarie. The laneway’s recent transformation has been made possible thanks to funding received under the NSW Government’s Vibrant Street Package - Permit/Plug/Play Pilot Program, enabling Council to revitalise this space into a vibrant canvas of light, art, and connection.
The precinct will showcase live music, street art, and hands-on workshops designed to spark inspiration and a sense of belonging among the region’s young creatives. This year ArtWalk is proudly supported by Optus.
“Our creative sector is incredibly diverse and deeply rooted in the identity of this region,” said Lucilla Marshall, Group Manager Liveable Communities. “Council is proud to continue investing in opportunities like ArtWalk that celebrate local talent, foster creative expression,
and build vibrant, connected places for our community.”
“This year, key attractions will remain onsite on Saturday 5 July including Stargate, interactive play on HEXADECA, the iconic fig tree and Busk at Dusk, which brings live performances to Town Green, 2pm to 5pm. Bring a rug or a chair, settle in as the sun goes down, and soak up the sounds of talented local musicians against the glow of a winter sunset.”
On Saturday 5 and Sunday 6 July, following the main ArtWalk event, ‘The Hastings Arts Trail’ lifts off. This free two-day event, led by Vivianne Hazenveld, is funded by Port Macquarie Hastings Council Community Grants and supported by the Port Macquarie Museum.
It will see artists and makers offer a captivating journey through over 30 studios, galleries and shared spaces throughout the Port MacquarieHastings region.
Whether it’s your first time or your ninth, ArtWalk promises to be an unforgettable experience and this year, it’s going to be out of this world.

UNEARTHED BY MATT
From vivid rainbows over Bago Bluff to golden coastlines at sunrise, local photographer Ma Doyle of Unearthed
By Ma , has a knack for capturing the Mid North Coast in all its raw beauty. In this interview, Ma shares what inspires his breathtaking aerial landscapes and the spontaneous instincts behind the lens.
Hi Matt. Your work has really struck a chord with nature lovers and photography fans alike. What first drew you to landscape photography?
I really enjoy being in the moment, especially in nature. I feel connected to a place and time that is far more than me, but I get to be witness to it. When in one of those moments, I feel compelled to capture it and share it with others, to appreciate the beauty of our natural world, especially within our region.
You’ve captured some breathtaking local scenery—what is it about the Mid North Coast that keeps you inspired behind the lens?
We have immediate access to such an amazing part of our country. With such natural beauty and diversity and the magical ways environmental factors can impact on the world around us, I am always driven to try and capture something unique and special in our space that people who live here can see and be amazed by too.
Can you tell us about one shot that was especially meaningful to you or challenging to capture?
I’ve developed a bit of an intuitive feeling for when and where rainbows will appear. I can’t explain it but I get this feeling that the conditions are evolving that might create an opportunity to see one. One such occasion came up, I drove from Port Macquarie out
through Wauchope and to Byabarra and timed it perfectly to get the rainbow right over Bago Bluff, exactly as I’d imagined and thought it might happen.
How do you choose your locations? Is it about planning and patience—or instinct and spontaneity?
The spontaneous nature of photography tends to suit me well, especially from the air as most of my photos are. I’d say a moment comes where I feel that I may see something great and I immediately run through my mind the
best location to capture the potential I can visualize, so I just head out and go. I’d say that’s largely unplanned though sometimes I think I want to capture a sunrise as the conditions are good, where could I go and then go from there. Taking photos from the air also means I can quickly move into a good position to capture that moment with respect to how I visualise it.
What kind of gear do you use, and how much does technology play a role versus simply “being in the right place at the
right time”?
I use a Canon EOS R mirrorless camera with a wide angle lens and telephoto for the occasional close up shots I might get a moment to capture and see, plus my new DJI Mavic 4 Pro drone which has opened up an incredible improvement in clarity, definition and light from my previous model. There’s certainly an element of being in the right place at the right time, but I’m not limited to only where I can get to quickly on foot, by air I can quickly find a scene that makes the moment come to life so much more than I could only on the ground.
I’d say a moment comes where I feel that I may see something great and I immediately run through my mind the best location to capture the potential I can visualize, so I just head out and go.
Many people take photos, but not everyone captures emotion in a landscape. What do you think makes a
great landscape photo stand out?
A capture of a place people know coupled with a special moment such as a sunset or a sunrise, a storm, rainbow or an event, shared with the people that live there I think makes a magic formula which makes it that extra bit special for people. I am driven to capture these special moments because of how it makes me, and others feel when it comes to life in front of my eyes.
You often share your work on social media—what’s it been like connecting with an audience online and growing your following?
I enjoy being able to connect to lots of people, to share what I’ve captured as soon as I can.
I do my best to publish photos the same day I capture them to communities where the photos were taken so it’s of relevance to my audience. I pride myself on always replying to every comment people make on my photos respectfully. I am driven by knowing that sharing those photos could make someone smile. I really enjoy knowing others enjoy seeing my photos too.
What do you hope people feel when they look at one of your photos?
I hope they feel joy, excitement, love and comfort, a place they may call home, or where they grew up, were born, baptised, married, or even just having spent a weekend camping or exploring. That memory comes to life so much more when they get a unique view to frame up that memory.
Where can we follow your journey, view your work or get in touch?
I primarily focus on Facebook, but also have an Instagram page and a web site all of which you can contact me through: unearthedbymatt unearthedbymatt unearthedbymatt.au
Thanks Matt

RACHEL CROSS
Hi Rachel. Can you tell us a bit about your background and how your journey as an artist began?
I have always had an interest in creative hobbies like arts and crafts. At home, I am always thinking about how I could build and create things. If there was a blank wall, I would think of ways I could fill the space and what I could add. Once I had come up with an idea, off I’d go, ready to experiment and create something for the wall.
My journey into the art world started when I saw a job advert for an Art Gallery Assistant, which made me think of how “that would be my dream job”. So I applied, and to my amazement, I got the job. After working in the gallery for a few months, I was asked by my colleague if I painted. From this conversation, I decided to bring in some of my work from

home. When he saw them, he asked me, “Have you sold any before, have you ever exhibited in an art gallery?” To which I responded, “I have not.” After hearing me say this, he then looked at me and said, “That’s about to change.” This little interaction really changed the way I viewed the things I created and helped me to think differently about how I made art.
Within a couple of months of starting my dream job, I sold my first painting in the art gallery in November 2021 and haven’t looked back. You grew up in the bush at Telegraph Point and now live by the beach in Port Macquarie, how do those two very
different landscapes influence your art?
Yes, I was born in Kempsey and grew up at Tele Point with my mum, dad, and two brothers. Then, with the birth of my first daughter, my now husband and I moved to Port Macquarie to start life as young adults.
My journey into the art world started when I saw a job advert for an Art Gallery Assistant, which made me think of how “that would be my dream job.
Having lived in both places, I was able to see and experience the differences within these worlds. This has greatly influenced my art today, where I often take a little from each. It could be the trees, the different animals, the colours of the water, or even through varying shades and patterns.

ARTIST of the MONTH
How does your Dunghutti heritage shape the way you approach your art?
As an Aboriginal woman, my Dunghutti heritage is a part of me. It is who I am as a person. It has shaped the way that I see and experience things.
Your style blends traditional Aboriginal elements with a modern twist—what does “contemporary Aboriginal art” mean to you?
For me, it is about telling my story of growing up in modern Australia. And like Australia, my journey is not stagnant, and the path forward is always changing. Aboriginal art is the foundation of my work, however growing up and living in a modern world is a part of my journey. Contemporary
Aboriginal art allows me to show my journey and how it is ever changing. There’s a real love of colour and pattern in your work. Where does that come from, and how do you decide on your palette for each piece?
Yes, I love using colours and patterns that really stand out.
If I see something that has caught my eye, I will take a photo of it on my phone, so that when I get home I can use it as a reference to do a quick sketch on my iPad.
When I look at an object or think of a design, I ask myself a few questions. If I was to deconstruct it, how would I then remake it? What kind of lines would there bestraight, wavy, or curved? What is the break-up of colours, shades, and different hues? How can I use those colours to tell a story and reflect my lived experiences? How can I take ordinary ideas and things, and shape them into the story of my life? How can I change the way we see everyday things?
The way I use designs does not always reflect what you expect something to be. I want it to push the imagination.
Can you walk us through your creative process—from inspiration to finished artwork?
Honestly it can start from anywhere. I could be walking down the street, at the beach or driving down the highway looking out the window.
If I see something that has caught my eye, I will take a photo of it on my phone, so that when I get home I can use it as a reference to do a quick sketch on my iPad. From there, I will experiment with different ideas and work on that sketch until I get it to a stage that I am happy with. Then I will start to work on the colour palette.
The next step is the canvas, which I set out

in stages to complete –like in what order I have decided to section out my painting i.e., painting these lines before those lines and so on. Once I complete a stage, I will take some photos and even look at my work so far in the mirror to see it from different perspectives. Then, when I am happy with it, I will continue through to the next stages. When I have finished painting, I will then leave it on an easel for at least a week. If I can walk past the painting for that week and not want to change anything, then I know it’s finished. Are there particular symbols, shapes or patterns you return to often in your work? What do they represent to you?
I am always experimenting with new shapes and patterns but I find that I am often drawn

of the world around us, maybe hope, or even just the simple pleasure of looking at something that feels good.
Being a contemporary artist, I am not fixed to using traditional symbols. Whilst I may incorporate them into my art from time to time, I will try to do it in my own style and in a way that it represents me.
How do you hope people feel when they experience your art?
I hope people feel a sense of happiness and joy when they see my art. I want it to be able to spark a smile, a memory, or even maybe a feeling of warmth. Whether it’s through the design or the story, my goal is to create something that connects with people in a positive way, reminding them of the beauty
What’s next for you—any upcoming exhibitions, collaborations or new directions in your work?
I try not to think too far ahead!
But I am currently a part of the 3 Nations Exhibition: The Next Generation, which runs every year during NAIDOC week. Art galleries along the Mid-North Coast, which partner with the event the Dunghutti-Ngaku Aboriginal Art Gallery, Wadjar Regional Indigenous Gallery and the Armidale Cultural Centre and Keeping Place exhibit the artworks of 10 local artists from each region and exchange their works between the 3 centres.
Thanks Rachel.
ARTIST of the MONTH
After nearly 35 years in the New South Wales Police Force, Commander Shane Cribb has been awarded the Australian Police Medal, an honour that recognises not just his distinguished service, but the collective strength and dedication of the team he leads.
SHANE CRIBB
Commander Cribb, congratulations on receiving the Australian Police Medal. How did it feel to be recognised with such a prestigious honour?
I was deeply honoured to receive the Australian Police Medal. After nearly 35 years in the NSW Police Force, you read about others being recognised with this award, but you never really expect to be one of them. Nobody joins the Police Force seeking recognition, but when it does come—especially in the form of something as prestigious as the Australian Police Medal—it’s incredibly humbling.
What made it even more special were the messages I received from family, colleagues, and the broader community. The outpouring of support and congratulations was truly overwhelming, and it reminded me of the strength and connection within the policing family and beyond.
Can you tell us a little about your journey in policing—what have been some of the key moments in your career?
I joined the New South Wales Police Force in 1991 and began my career in and around Sydney. Early postings took me to the City of Sydney, Paddington, and Bondi, before I ventured into Criminal Investigations with a rotation at what was then the South Region Major Crime Squad.
In 1995, I transferred to Waverley Detectives and later to Burwood Detectives. It was during this time that I began stepping into leadership roles, relieving as a Sergeant in the Detectives Office and across several Strike Forces that were operational at the time.
In 2002, I was promoted to Sergeant and transferred to Cobar. Not long after, I began relieving as an Inspector, taking on responsibility for the townships of Cobar, Nyngan, and Warren. Two years later, I was promoted to Chief Inspector and transferred to the coastal town of Coffs Harbour. By 2009, I had moved to the Mid North Coast Police District, based at Port Macquarie.
Around that time, I felt the pull toward Command roles and began relieving as a Commander across various locations.
That aspiration was realised when I was promoted to Superintendent and posted to Orange. After several years there, I transferred to Manning Great Lakes, and eventually returned to the Mid North Coast, where I continue to serve.
The APM recognises distinguished service. In your view, what are the qualities or values that define outstanding policing?
To me, outstanding policing is about heart as much as it is about skill. It's about showing up for the people – not just in moments of crisis, but in the everyday, often unseen moments that build trust and connection. The officers I admire most are those who serve with humility, who listen before they act, and who treat everyone with respect, no matter the circumstances.
Distinguished service isn’t about rank or recognition – it’s about character, it’s about staying true to our values, holding ourselves accountable and doing the right thing even when it's hard. I see that kind of quiet leadership across this District and it's what inspires me to keep doing this work every day.
incidents, our team showed resilience, professionalism, and an unwavering commitment to keeping people safe. But above all, it’s the day-to-day leadership –supporting our officers, seeing them grow, and watching them make a real difference – that’s the most rewarding part of this role.
Can you speak to the importance of leadership and teamwork within the force, especially in high-pressure or emergency situations?
Coast Police District. Every achievement I’ve been part of has come down to the people I work alongside – officers, support staff, community partners – all of them committed to making our communities safer and stronger. This medal also belongs to the broader community we serve. The trust and support we receive from the public is what makes our work possible especially during times of crisis or change.
This medal also belongs to the broader community we serve. The trust and support we receive from the public is what makes our work possible especially during times of crisis or change.
What have been some of your proudest achievements as Commander of the district?
Seeing young police come through the ranks, and achieving their personal goals is something I get great pleasure out of. Over the last few years, I have been fortunate enough to support and guide some great police throughout their careers which has seen a lot of them get promoted. This is something else that I get a kick out of.
Another proud moment was leading the District through natural disasters and significant operational challenges. Whether it was bushfires, floods or major
Leadership and teamwork are at the heart of everything we do in policing – and they matter most when the stakes are highest. In high-pressure or emergency situations, it’s not just about acting fast, it's about acting with clarity, purpose, and unity. As a leader I see my role as setting the tone – creating a culture where people know their responsibilities, feel supported and trust one another. Because when things go wrong – and they sometimes do – it’s the trust and preparation that hold everything together. I’ve seen my officers respond to incidents – situations where the margin for error is razor-thin. And every time, it’s the strength of the team that carries us through. It's not just about individual bravery – it's about people stepping up for each other, staying calm under pressure and staying focused on serving the community.
What does this recognition—the Australian Police Medal—mean not just for you, but for your team and the broader district you serve?
Receiving the Australian Police Medal is an incredible honour – but for me it’s not just personal recognition. It reflects the hard work, dedication, and resilience of the entire team of the Mid North
So, whilst I’m deeply humbled by the recognition, I see it as a reflection of collective effort, of teamwork, shared values and the quiet determination of people who show up every day to do the right thing. I’m proud to wear the medal, it's not just for myself, but for every team member of the District.
Looking ahead, what are your hopes for the future of policing on the Mid North Coast?
I want us to continue strengthening the bond between police and the community – not just through presence, but through real partnerships. That means listening more, engaging early, and being proactive in the way we address the complex social issues that underpin crime especially when it comes to youth, mental health, drugs, and vulnerable groups.
We also need to keep evolving –embracing new technology, smart policing strategies, and innovative ways of working, whilst never losing sight of the values that define good policing: integrity, fairness, and service.
I see a future where our police force reflects the diversity and strength of the Mid North Coast community. A future where every employee of the Mid North Coast Police Force feels supported, where leadership is shared, and where our culture is one of continual growth. At the heart of it all, my hope is simple: that the people we serve feel safe, respected, and confident in their police – and that our officers, in turn, feel proud of the work they do and the difference they make Thank you.
Katie Blake
Katie Blake, Unit Commander of the Port Macquarie Hastings SES, has dedicated over 14 years to serving her community through emergency response and resilience building. From storm damage to road crash rescues, she leads a team of committed volunteers who work tirelessly—often behind the scenes—to keep the community safe, prepared, and supported.
hat inspired you to join the SES, and how long have you been volunteering or working with the organisation?
I am the Commander of the Port Macquarie Hastings SES Unit, with 14 years of experience in emergency services since joining as a volunteer in 2011. My journey with SES began with a desire to acquire new skills, build connections, and contribute to my community in a meaningful manner. My motivation to assist my community remains strong, whether it involves repairing a leaking roof or rescuing individuals following a road crash incident.
What are some of the most common emergencies the Port Macquarie SES responds to in our region?
In the past year, the Port Macquarie SES Unit has managed more than 300 storm and flood-related jobs. We have also dealt with weather events such as hailstorms, a microburst, ex-tropical cyclones, and major flooding of the Hastings River. Additionally, the Port Macquarie SES responds to general rescue callouts, road crashes and vertical rescues attending over 100 incidents annually.
What’s something people might not realise about the work your team does?
Many people might not realize the extent of commitment and versatility required by our volunteers. Being part of the SES means being on call 24/7 and ready for anything, whether it's battling the fierce elements or providing crucial emergency services at a moment's notice.
The SES mission is 'saving lives and creating safer communities,' and we embody this in every task we perform.
Whether it's rescuing someone from floodwaters, providing immediate assistance after a road crash, fixing a leaking roof, or educating the community about emergency preparedness, we are committed to making a tangible difference. Being on call as volunteers means we rely on the support of our families and employers to enable us to attend flood, storm, or rescue jobs throughout the year, ensuring we are always ready to help when the community needs us most.
What are some of the key skills and training required to become an SES member?
The State Emergency Service (SES) offers nationally accredited training programs, enabling members to achieve qualifications in public safety through courses such as storm response, chainsaw cross-cutting, flood rescue, first aid, land search, road crash rescue, among others. SES members frequently utilize their expertise in teamwork, communication, and problemsolving whilst attending callouts on the frontline.
swift, effective disaster management. For people who are considering volunteering with the SES, what would you say to encourage them to take that step?
If you possess a strong sense of community service, want to learn new skills, meet a diverse range of people and wish to join an outstanding group of volunteers who are committed to saving lives and creating safer communities, then go to https:// www.ses.nsw.gov.au/ volunteer and click on apply now.
Our most dedicated members have a true sense of serving their community and find it rewarding when they can help others in their time of need.
What kind of support do you receive from the broader emergency services network, and how do you all work together during disasters?
The support from emergency response partners is vital during disasters. When the Hastings River flooded in May, we joined forces with NSW Fire Rescue, Marine Rescue, RFS, Surf Life Saving, Police, Ambulance, Local Council, and SES volunteers from around NSW and interstate. This collaboration ensures
How else can the community support the SES?
A few simple things you can do when preparing for floods and storms: clean your gutters and drains, check your roof and fix any damage, trim back overhanging branches, and never drive through floodwaters. More tips can be found on ses.nsw.gov.au/plan-andprepare/storm
What is the most rewarding aspect of being involved with the State Emergency Service (SES)?
Our most dedicated members have a true sense of serving their community and find it rewarding when they can help others in their time of need. Rain or shine, we proudly don our orange uniforms and step up to tackle challenges that come our way. As the unit commander, leading the Port Macquarie SES is an absolute honour and I take immense pride in empowering my team to hone their skills and serve our community with excellence.
Thanks Katie.
Leading Firefighter Sco O’Shea has built a diverse and meaningful career in emergency services, driven by a passion for helping others and serving his community. Since joining Fire and Rescue NSW and se ling in Port Macquarie, he’s become a vital part of the region’s frontline response team on the ground during crises and behind the scenes building resilience.
hat inspired you to pursue a career in fire and rescue services?
I worked for almost 10 years overseas travelling and mainly working in the snow industry and a few years in scuba diving. Upon returning to Australia I reflected on my life experiences and what I like most about the jobs I had done. I identified that I enjoyed helping people, giving back to people in need and being outdoors. I then identified jobs in Australia that would fill those requirements and found firefighting the best fit.
How long have you been serving in Port Macquarie, and what do you love most about working in this community?
I have been a professional firefighter since 2011 and I have been stationed at City of
Sydney, Lane Cove, Bondi, Alexandria, Tamworth and Newcastle then I finally got posted to Port Macquarie in 2021. I love working close to home and serving my community. I also enjoy working at the station here as the other firefighters in the station make it a really rewarding place to work. We have great support from our management here on the Mid North Coast and they have created a really great, positive and inclusive culture with plenty of opportunities to grow professionally. Firefighting obviously involves responding to emergencies, but what are some of the lesser-known responsibilities your team takes on?
We are the only professional fire service in the Hastings area. The next closest 24 hour stations are Tamworth, Coffs Harbour and Newcastle. We are the combat agency for hazardous materials incidents in the state of NSW and we have dedicated resources at our station to manage these types of incidents. We also do a lot of work in the local community promoting home fire safety, whether it's inspecting homes or providing fire safety presentations to school or community groups
In the recent flood our station played a massive role working alongside other agencies like the SES to provide in water rescue technicians, hazardous materials support and recovery operations throughout the region.
Additionally we work alongside the Rural Fire Service regularly as their station adjoins Port Macquarie’s urban interface. It’s common to respond to the same incident whether it’s a structure fire or car accident and we work closely together to keep the community safe.
At a management level our local senior officers meet with their counterparts in other agencies, like Police and Ambulance, for local emergency management planning on a regular basis.
A er the recent flooding events in 2021 FRNSW was allocated funding to train local firefighters in Swi Water Rescue so
we can have a greater local flooding response capability.
What’s one of the most important skills or qualities someone needs to be a firefighter?
Ability to think decisively under pressure and have the incentive to maintain physical and mental health. You definitely have to be empathetic and genuinely care for people whether it’s your own crew, people from different backgrounds, animals in distress or being there for someone who is having the worst day of their life.
How does Fire and Rescue Port Macquarie work with other emergency services in the region?
With fire seasons and weather events becoming more intense, how is your team preparing and adapting to the challenges posed by climate change?
After every natural disaster FRNSW conducts after action reviews of our operations. This helps planning for budget allocation of resources, requests for further funding or resources that have been identified to increase our operational capability in our local area.
After the recent flooding events in 2021 FRNSW was allocated funding to train local firefighters in Swift Water Rescue so we can have a greater local flooding response capability. These crews were deployed during the recent floods with great success: abc.net.au/news/2025-05-26/flood-rescuersuse-makeshift-raft-to-save-two-people-sixdogs/105337046
What kind of training do new recruits undergo, and is it something locals can get involved in?
Upon becoming accepted as a permanent
firefighter, applicants are required to attend a 13 week intensive firefighter training at FRNSW’s Emergency Services Academy in Sydney. Firefighting is dynamic and training never stops. To earn promotion through the ranks further training and study is required over your career.
On a local level at Port Macquarie Fire station we have over 25 full time operational staff split over 4 shifts. We have roughly another 20 on-call firefighters who live locally and are paged every time to assist the permanent staff respond to the incident. All on-call firefighters live in the local area and are vital to FRNSW providing fire coverage in our local area. We are always looking for staff in the Hastings area and have further on-call stations at Laurieton and Wauchope. Please check out this link if you are interested in joining our On-Call firefighters: careers.fire.nsw.gov.au/ on-call-firefighting
How can the community best support the work you do?
You can check out our website so you can find all the most up to date information regarding home fire safety. This is particularly important coming into winter with heaters, fireplaces and electric blankets being used. If you’re unsure we can come and have a look at your home and advise you on specific home safety for your house which you can book from the link fire.nsw.gov.au
If there is a natural disaster you need to heed to advice early. If there is an evacuation order, whether for flood or fire, plan ahead and get out early. In the recent floods, resources were stretched and a lot of time and resources were used up revisiting low lying areas of Port Macquarie evacuating people who refused to leave only to call later when it was too late. Emergencies are triaged and if you are given the opportunity to get out early then do so, because if emergency services have to come back you’re also endangering their lives too! FOR THE LAST TIME DON’T DRIVE THROUGH FLOOD WATER!
Thanks Scott.

DANIEL SIDLER
When did you first become interested in food as a profession? Early in my life I developed an interest in food and cooking, which stemmed from various points in my life, most significantly are positive childhood food experiences, such as exposure to a variety of flavours and to different cuisines when I was young. Further on in life, I found food to be a creative outlet, together with my desire to have more influence in the way which foods were prepared and presented, I decided to make it a career.
Talk us through your chef training and where your career began? I completed my apprenticeship in Port Macquarie, then moved to Switzerland to further develop my culinary skills. I was able to work in first class restaurants for over 8 years in Switzerland, learning a variety of techniques from chefs around the world. I then moved back to Australia and assisted in opening a restaurant in Brisbane before finally moving home to
Port Macquarie and opening a restaurant with my wife.
When it comes to creating a seasonal menu, what key factors do you consider? The most important factor is using seasonal produce, ingredients that are at their peak in flavour and freshness during each season of the year. This approach ensures that we utilise fresh, in-season produce that is sourced through our local suppliers.
What are some of the things that your customers enjoy about your food? Freshness and quality. I strive to create every element of a dish in house, from the sauces, purees, powders, jus, down to the humble hash-brown. Our commitment to quality and a hands-on, in kitchen approach to food preparation makes all difference in our food.
Regarding special events, what catering options do you offer? Our café has a beautiful position next to the lake, which is available for private functions. For enquiries contact Nateaka Sidler on 0412 890 200.
Thanks Daniel.

EaTs Estate
GRAND OPENING ON JULY 18TH
EaTs Estate (formerly known as Mid North Coast Eats) takes centre stage this month opening its destination dining and events venue in Port Macquarie. Focus caught up with founder Ellen Crepaz to hear all about the exciting journey now coming to fruition and plans for the future.
Hi Ellen. EaTs Estate is set to be an events destination like no other. Please tell us about your vision for the brand.
The vision for EaTs Estate was born from a deep love for creating meaningful events in our community. Over the years, I’ve been inspired by incredible local businesses, but I’ve also listened closely to what’s been missing and that’s where this idea blossomed. I wanted to build more than just a venue. So, we created an imaginative and welcoming estate set on hectares of land, home to the stunning Innes Lake Vineyards. At the heart of it is our restaurant space, which proudly showcases our brands: Yia Yia’s Greek Taverna, Aphrodite’s High Tea & Dessert Wine Bar, our EuroEaTs retail store, the wine cellar, and our newest addition, Little Fish Under the Eiffel, opening on our grand night.
The grand opening is scheduled for July 18th. What do you have in-store for the exciting initiative?
On 18 July, we’re throwing open the gates to every corner of EaTs Estate and it’s going to be
one of Port Macquarie’s most unforgettable nights. We’re inviting guests to step into a world of wonder at our masquerade ball, where everyone receives a luxe goodie bag on arrival and is treated to a night full of surprises. We’ll officially unveil Little Fish Under the Eiffel, our French-inspired courtyard set in a romantic country garden. Guests will enjoy wine tastings, a complimentary glass of our famous mulled wine or sangria, and roam through our newly opened spaces. What will make this night truly magical will be the element of mystery whilst enjoying canapés and entertainment from incredible local artists and seasoned performers.
I understand there has been quite a journey for you and the team readying Eats Estate to share with locals and visitors. How has your culture and those of other staff been an incremental marker in the vision for the brand’s food and dining menu?
Our journey has been nothing short of extraordinary, and I’m so proud of the cultural tapestry that’s woven into everything we do at EaTs Estate. I’m incredibly lucky to be joined in this venture by my husband, Peter Crepaz,
who brings his beautiful Italian and Maltese heritage to the table. Together, we’re planning pop-up events like Tuscany Under the Sun, an Italian wedding-style celebration, and special Maltese Nights, which are incredibly rare in Australia and something we’re so excited to offer.
We’re also joined by our dear friends and now business partners, Lui Goskel and Ngaire Sanddry the passionate duo behind Filly Up. Their work with youth, particularly in hospitality training and mentoring, is something I’ve admired for years. They’ve turned their vision into a movement, and over time, our friendship has evolved into a family bond. Their deep hospitality experience, paired with Lui’s global adventures in food and entertainment, is helping us shape EaTs Estate into something truly unique. At the heart of it all is my own cultural heritage. Yia Yia’s Greek Taverna is named after my grandmother Eleni, who inspired my love of food from a young age. Our team’s diverse backgrounds aren’t just reflected on the menu, they’re the very essence of the Estate. It’s a celebration of culture, connection, and community. We can’t wait to host you!

THE SIMPLE THINGS
Often it is the simple things in life that are the best. The pure, uncomplicated moments – a walk in the sunshine, a splash in the surf or a quiet night at home with a loved one.
The more complex and involved our plans are, the more likely they are to backfire or disappoint us – when our expectations and stress levels are too high, it can be quite difficult to enjoy the fruits of our labours.
The same is true of dining experiences. There is certainly such a thing as ‘trying too hard’ when it comes to creating dishes. With a wealth of amazing ingredients available to chefs and home cooks alike these days, and when fuelled by unbridled creativity and enthusiasm, there is potential for both genius and disaster in equal measures.
The combinations of flavours to be experimented with are endless. Ever searching for unbelievable new marriages made in heaven there are no holds barred in the kitchen. And the boundaries of tradition – the segregation of sweet, savoury, spicy, hot, cold – you name it –are no longer a barrier to invention.
Anything goes, so it’s no wonder that sometimes the real point of a dish can get lost in the
excitement of it’s creation.
It’s like a room full of voices all talking at once –it is impossible to hear what everyone is saying, let alone who, if anyone, is actually saying anything of any importance or interest! And that is where we need to hark back to the simple things…
The pure, uncomplicated fact that you have an amazing piece of fresh produce in front of you – if it is cooked with skill and precision, it doesn’t actually need that much done to it. The flavours inherent need to be allowed to shine. It, in itself, is the hero.
There is much skill in knowing when to hold back in cooking, to allow a single ingredient to be the boss – to use other ingredients to support and complement, rather than compete with.
And in addition to the discipline required to exercise restraint comes the requirement for absolute perfection with simplicity – the fact that there is nowhere to hide, nothing to mask a multitude of sins. Each element of such a wonderfully simple dish needs to be perfectly prepared, cooked and presented. In many ways it is the true test of the skill set of the chef – just the ingredients themselves, the most subtle accompaniments and the knowledge
and precision required to conjure up the magic that makes flavours sing and turns a meal into a someone transcendental experience.
In this world of sensation overload in general – smartphones, hectic schedules, skypeing, blogging and just trying to fit too many things into a day – it is important to hold on to some form of simplicity.
Freshly shucked Sydney rock oysters with just a squeeze of lemon anyone? A piece of beautiful fresh fish, with just a squeeze of lemon and some handmade chips perhaps - or even just some humble and infinitely delicious cheese on toast ?
Perfectly executed examples of dishes such as these can be as life affirming as the most incredible items found on menus of hatted and Michelin starred restaurants.
There is no doubt that there is a time for complexity and artistry in the culinary world. But there is an equal mastery of the craft in knowing when to hold back and when to let the beauty of the bounty of incredible ingredients there is to offer speak for themselves. Such amazing fresh produce only needs a skilful yet delicate touch to shine extremely brightly on its own.
Less can indeed be more!

What’s in
Season
with BRYAN HANKS OWNER - GROWERS MARKET
Well, not exactly. I’m sweet enough because we stock an amazing range of local honey. We’ve got everything: 3 kilo tubs for avid bakers, handy 1 kilo family jars, petite pantry-friendly pots, easy-squeeze bottles for sleepy school mornings, dreamy creamed honey, raw honey straight from the extractor, fresco honeycomb that glows like edible stained glass, cheeky chilli-infused honey for the heat lovers, and pure bee pollen for the wellness warriors.
I’M SWEET ENOUGH ALREADY!
But let’s press pause on the shopping list and talk about why this liquid gold deserves pride of place in every kitchen.
First, provenance. Our beekeepers don’t just pop hives wherever there’s space, they track the flowering calendar of native gums, citrus groves, and blueberry blooms, giving each batch a distinctive personality. Taste our late spring forest honey and you’ll pick up buttery caramel notes. Grab the coastal heath run harvested in May and you’ll find a whisper of salted toffee. Honey is nature’s postcard, every spoonful carries a time, place, and perfume that no lab-built sugar crystal can imitate.
Second, sustainability. Drizzle local honey over pancakes and you’re casting a vote for healthier farms and wilder backyards. Bees pollinate nearly one-third of the fruit and veg we sell—apples, avocados, cucumbers, almonds, even onions. Our apiarists practise low-stress beekeeping: minimal smoke, shade
Now, let’s play in the kitchen.
Classic use? Swirl into Greek yoghurt, glaze ham, finish a cheese board. But try these nextlevel hacks:
Swap sugar for creamed honey in banana bread, it locks in moisture for plush, lasting texture.
Make a thyme-honey vinaigrette with raw honey, white balsamic, olive oil, and sea salt, it turns rocket into a Provençal picnic.
Roast carrots with cumin, then glaze with orange blossom honey, kids actually fight over them.
Muddle lime, mint, and ginger in a jug, stir in ironbark honey, top with sparkling water, what lemonade wishes it could be.
Feeling crafty? Drop a chunk of honeycomb into black tea. As the wax melts, the cells release silken sweetness and a faint wildflower aroma, a tiny act of slow living. Or whip bee pollen into a smoothie. Nutty crunch, B-vitamins, protein, and trace minerals? Your immune system will thank you.
Raw vs. heat-treated? Raw honey is just filtered, never pasteurised, preserving enzymes like glucose oxidase, it’s a mini apothecary. A teaspoon before bed has soothed many a cough in my house. Heat-treated honey pours like silk and resists crystallising, perfect for
marinades. Different vibes, both keepers. Crystallised? Don’t panic. It means your honey’s the real deal. Just place the jar in warm water for 10 minutes. Microwave? Only low and slow, you’re a custodian of flavour, not a demolition crew.
Seasonal highlights:
Spring: lemony blue gum
Summer: mellow clover
Autumn: dark, complex stringybark
Winter: smoky banksia nectar, a rare, maltlike delight
Rotate your jar with the seasons, honey’s the shape-shifter of the pantry.
Pro tip: Store honey at room temperature, lid tight. The fridge dulls flavour and speeds crystallisation. Keep it away from strong odours and sunlight. Stored right, it practically lasts forever, 3,000-year-old honey found in Egyptian tombs was still edible.
So next time someone asks if you take sugar, grin and crack open a jar of our local liquid sunshine. Life’s short, bees are busy, and your taste buds deserve a joy ride. Swing by the top end of Gordon St, sample a drizzle, chat about this week’s floral notes, and take home something that’ll sweeten breakfasts, dinners, and maybe your day. At Growers Market, we’re not just selling honey. We’re bottling seasons, and the hum of hardworking hives. Come taste the buzz.
trees, and enough honey left for the colony’s own pantry. Sweet, wholesome, ethical, triple cream on the cake.
BRING BACK MY WIVES
Hi Justin. This show sounds absolutely wild! How did you get involved with Bring
Back My Wives, and what drew you to the chaos and camp of it all?
When I was a little boy, I wished for my life to be everything that this tour is –fabulous, outrageous and fun. I think maybe the reality TV gods must have heard me because this is a dream gig!
I’ve been lucky enough to host the podcast for RuPaul’s Drag Race Down Under and have worked with drag queens for most of my career, to see what they do AND the fact they do it in a heel is admirable.
JUSTIN HILL
working on that one!
But truly, what I think people are going to get at these shows is unlike anything we’ve seen before. It’s going to be very unfiltered, lots of stories we’ve never heard before and a real peek behind the curtain into what it’s like to be part of a reality show, so I’m not sure I want to reign anyone in, let’s let them spill ALL of the TEA!
and are often building their own empire at the same time.
The mash-up of Real Housewives and Drag Race is genius, why do you think these two worlds work so well together in a live format?
The fact that BOTH of them do the whole thing in corsets, heels and hair is something I aspire to do. Never ever will I complain about my feet hurting because these ladies are doing everything I’m doing and more!
For World Pride in 2023, I had my own Hayu show which allowed me to live out my Real Housewives fantasy and I’ve been known to quote most housewives in my everyday life – so it was an epic alignment of the stars.
I also feel like ‘chaos’ and ‘camp’ are my opposing alter egos, so as soon as I heard about the tour, I HAD to be involved!
You’ll be wrangling some very big personalities live on stage—what’s your game plan for keeping the drama delicious but (somewhat) under control?
Well, firstly I was thinking I could get a REALLY huge, bedazzled whistle and use it to keep everyone in line but it turns out they’re harder to find than you’d think! I know that a lot of the housewives have a code word they like to use when they’re filming when they want to have a break, so I considered a safe word but then it got me thinking about what I’d use. I feel like our conversations on tour are going to be peppered with words like glitter, slay, YAS and so on, so none of those would work… it would have to be something you’d never expect to hear at a show like this – maybe a power tool reference? Sport perhaps? I’m still
It’s so crazy that this hasn’t happened before. Even the housewives themselves have admitted that they are drag queens! I mean the hair, the makeup, the drama – sometimes I forget which show I’m watching. But when you peel back all the layers of highlighter, lippie and take out the hair extensions, at our core we all love to be a fly on the wall.
But the best part is you can tell they love what they do. I feel as kids, those of us who were… let’s just say ‘natural performers’ kind of played by ourselves, but when we all get together as we are with the queens and housewives, we’ve found our people and that’s the vibe I want to bring to each and every person that comes to see a show.
Everyone thinks that it’s all champagne and caviar when you’re working with queens and housewives but they are categorically the hardest working people in the industry.
For many of us, Drag Race and the Real Housewives have been our safe space. A place we can disappear into when we need a break from our own lives and see what dramas someone else is dealing with… even if they are the rich and famous
What’s it like working alongside such an iconic lineup of Queens and Housewives?
Everyone thinks that it’s all champagne and caviar when you’re working with queens and housewives but they are categorically the hardest working people in the industry.
Not only are they shooting iconic TV, but they’re also usually all business owners
Finally, what’s your message to fans getting ready for a night out at Bring Back My Wives? What should they absolutely come prepared for? Listen, if it doesn’t have sequins on it… don’t wear it.
If you’ve got a bag of hair, clip it in.
We want to see you living your best drag/housewife fantasies but most of all, we want you to have fun. Bring your girls, bring your gays and rally the theys because this night is for absolutely EVERYONE.
Husbands are most welcome, just make sure they know the rules about photography - please always use the flash and go for flattering angles!
You are in for a night of fierce drag performances, fabulous housewives hot takes and ME, I’ll be there to make sure you have the night of your life and show these housewives that down under, we know how to PARTY!
Thanks Justin.
BRING BACK MY WIVES
LAGANJA ESTRANJA
Hi Laganja. We are so excited to welcome you back to Australia for the Bring Back My Wives Australian tour! What can fans expect from Bring Back My Wives—and how would you describe the chaos and camp of this show in your own words?
Get ready for the shows, stunts, and shenanigans! Tables will be flipped and girls will be dipped. Your favorite reality TV divas will be presented live on stage in a way you’ve never seen before. Get ready for the ultimate crossover OCKURRRR!
This tour is where Real Housewives meets RuPaul’s Drag Race, what’s it been like blending those two worlds on stage?
DRAMA MAWMA—feathers have flown and wigs have been snatched! All jokes aside, working with these iconic housewives has been such a gift. I have learned so much from these empowering women and can’t
wait to keep making magic memories with them throughout Australia.
Without giving too much away… can you tease the kind of drama or jawdropping moments audiences might witness live?
The audience can expect to see their favorite TV moments revisited in a dramatic staging with the added flamboyance of DRAG!
From outrageous lipsyncs to explosive confessions, this show sounds like reality TV on steroids—how do you prepare for a performance this over-the-top?
their journey… so no one is more prepared than me. I am ready to recite and recreate their iconic lines and moments by of course adding my own twist, eh!!
What’s it like working with a cast of other iconic queens on a show that thrives on big personalities? Are there any backstage shenanigans we should know about?
I have learned so much from these empowering women and can’t wait to keep making magic memories with them throughout Australia.
I was born for a tour like this! Growing up alongside the introduction of reality TV, I have followed all of the housewives on
As someone who has worked with Drag Queens for over a decade now, backstage drama no longer surprises me. However, now that we have added real housewives into the mix, let’s just say I’ll be keeping my medication on lock so that I can stay cool, calm and collected at all times. Thakns Laganja.
I have been lucky enough to host my own Drag Brunches across the USA. I just hope the Aussies are ready for what we are about to bring!
WHITNEY ROSE
Hi Whitney. You're bringing your signature sass Down Under! What are you most excited about as you join the Bring Back My Wives Australian tour?
I’m beyond excited to bring a little more of Salt Lake City to Australia! I had an amazing experience in Australia. I've always loved how passionate and fun Aussie fans are, so to share this wild, unapologetic show with them feels like a dream. Plus, getting to travel with Teresa and some of the fiercest queens in the world is going to be an incredible experience!
This show combines the drama of The Real Housewives with the fierce world of drag— how would you describe this wild fusion to fans who’ve never seen anything like it?
There's so much crossover among the fan base and this show is like a Bravo meets RuPaul so we said, “Let’s give them something they’ll never forget.” It’s super fun with catwalks, and chaos—in the best way. If you love Housewives drama and the artistry of drag, this show is meant for you. You don't want to miss it! . We’re used to seeing you on screen, how different is it to bring that energy to a live audience?
BRING BACK MY WIVES
On screen, you can pause, rewind, or cut the cameras. But live? You feel every reaction, every cheer, every gasp—and that adrenaline is unmatched. It’s raw, it’s real, and honestly there is nothing better than being with the fans and feeding off their energy.
You’ll be part of unfiltered interviews, confessions, and live lip-syncs. Which part are you most nervous—or excited—to dive into?
Honestly, I’m both excited and nervous for the lip-syncs! I've known Luxx for a few years and know she can turn up a dance stage, and obviously I have supported drag in my local community my whole life. Through my skincare business Wild Rose Beauty, we have worked alongside local talent for various fundraisers and events throughout Salt Lake City, I have been lucky enough to host my own Drag Brunches across the USA. I just hope the Aussies are ready for what we are about to bring! Drag and Housewives are both all about confidence, looks, and drama. Do you see any of yourself in the queens you’re sharing the stage with?
Absolutely. These queens are bold, they tell their truth, and they look incredible while doing it. That’s what being a Housewife is all about too. We both understand how to walk into a
room and unapologetically own it!
What’s it like collaborating with queens from RuPaul’s Drag Race? Have any of them surprised or inspired you?
They are insanely talented. I knew they’d be good, but watching how much heart, discipline, and creativity they put into every performance is inspiring. Some of them have become friends of mine, Manilla Luzon and Jan Sport have been to my home and I have even visited Trixie Mattels in hers. They have even taught me so much about how to take ownership of myself and not care about other people's opinions of me, which living in the public, has been essential to my success. I have to admit one of the biggest perks to being friends with so many iconic Queens is learning all of the tips on makeup and stage presence.
How do you think Australian audiences will react to all the glam, drama, and fabulous chaos of this show?
I think they’re going to live for it. Australians know how to have fun—and they don’t hold back. I’m expecting big energy, big love, and maybe even a few Aussie Housewives in the crowd. It’s going to be a wild ride and I cannot wait to see everyone there.
Thanks Whitney.
GARY RAINBOW
Hi Gary, can you tell us a bit about your connection to Wauchope?
I was born in Port Macquarie, grew up in Pembroke and went to school in Wauchope. After university in Newcastle and a stint overseas, I felt the pull of home and made my way back to the Hastings region where I’ve been ever since.
That’s
You recently helped us source historic photos for the Hastings Hotel — how did you go about gathering those?
You’re known for your passion for Wauchope’s history — where did that interest begin?
I’ve always had a strong interest in the history of transport in NSW. Wauchope played a key role in the development of the Hastings region, largely thanks to the arrival of the North Coast Railway, which positioned the town as a centre of trade and growth. My love of history started young — I was even a volunteer at Timbertown in its early days.
why I hope the historic images on display at the hotel capture a ention across all age groups and help people connect with the past in a more personal and engaging way.
The Wauchope and District Historical Society holds an incredible collection of photos — everything from the early days of rail to the people and places that helped shape our region into a key economic hub. Alongside the images, the Society also preserves written records that tell the stories of the pioneers who helped build the Hastings Valley.
Why do you think it’s important to preserve and share the history of places like the Hastings Hotel?
It’s important for people to understand the stories and events that shaped us. The current Hastings Hotel opened just as World War II broke out, and its modest late Art Deco design reflects the austerity of the time. Preserving those historical features while incorporating modern comforts is a
great way to honour that past. How do you think we can encourage more people — especially younger generations — to take an interest in local history?
Everyone loves a good story, especially when it involves their own family or community. For younger generations, visuals like old photographs often spark more interest than facts and figures alone. That’s why I hope the historic images on display at the hotel capture attention across all age groups and help people connect with the past in a more personal and engaging way.
Lastly, what does Wauchope mean to you personally?
I’ve known Wauchope all my life and have always been amazed by how it continues to reinvent itself. After travelling the world, you come to appreciate just how special the Hastings Valley truly is. Wauchope has a great energy, a strong sense of community, and a real love of sport. It’s long been known as the heart of the Hastings, a welcoming town surrounded by stunning hinterland and a place I’m proud to call home.
Thanks Gary.

Hastings Farm Ge Tours
Hastings Farm Gate Tours provides an opportunity for the community to tour host properties across the greater Hastings, Port Macquarie & Camden Haven region, connecting us with the farmers who grow our food. A diverse array of properties open their gates over the 2nd - 3rd August 2025 weekend showcasing regenerative farming techniques and products. We spoke to HFGT representative Linda Schlencker, and two local farming families involved, about what this initiative is all about.
LINDA SCHLENCKER, HASTINGS FARM GATE TOURS
What’s the main goal or vision behind the Hastings Farm Gate Tours?
The main goal of the Hastings Farm Gate Tour is to celebrate local produce and regenerative farming, connecting our community directly with the farmers who grow their food and educating everyone, young and old, about its origins.
How has the response been from both local farmers and the wider community?
The response has been overwhelmingly positive from both sides! Farmers truly value the opportunity to connect directly with the community, sharing their passion for regenerative agriculture and how it enriches both the land and the food. For the wider community, it's been a massive hit – a sell-out event for the past three years! Attendees love the family-friendly fun, exploring our beautiful region, and getting inspired for their own backyards.
How do visitors plan their self-drive tours – is it fully customisable? Yes, it's completely customisable! Visitors
receive a map and a schedule of host open times with their $60 per carload ticket. From there, they design their own self-drive adventure, simply booking into specific time slots for hosts with limited capacities. What can people expect when they visit a participating farm?
Visitors can expect a fantastic blend of fun and learning! Be ready for some walking, potentially on uneven terrain, but every stop offers a unique experience. Some farms will have produce or refreshments for sale, and our urban farmers and community gardens are ready to share, educate, and inspire. We're also planning some exciting workshops and educational talks to enhance the experience.
What kind of impact has the tour had on raising awareness or increasing support for local farmers?
The tour has had a significant impact on both fronts. We consistently hear from visitors that they had no prior knowledge of regenerative agriculture before attending, so it's been a powerful educational tool. It also bridges that crucial gap, making it easier for the community to connect directly with our local farmers, which has helped in their ongoing
success.
How can people get involved, whether as visitors or future host properties?
Details of how to get involved as a host, volunteer or visitor can all be found on our website: hastingsfarmgate.au
DESLEY & ROD BAILEY FROM HOMEGROWN ORGANICS, MASTERS OF FRESH
Can you tell us a bit about your farm and what you grow?
We’re Homegrown Organics, farming organically for six years. We grow a wide range of seasonal vegetables, lettuce, carrots, beetroot, broccoli, kale, cabbage, peas and more. In summer, we add crops like corn, tomatoes, cucumbers, beans, capsicum and eggplant. What inspired you to get involved in this year’s Hastings Farm Gate Tour?
We’ve taken part in the Hastings Farm Gate Tour for four years now, and it’s become a highlight for us. Each year, more people visit, curious about how food is grown and the challenges we face. The tour connects people to the land, their food, and the farmers
What are some of the biggest challenges you face as a farmer?
Weather is unpredictable, floods can wipe out months of work, humidity invites fungal diseases, and hailstorms can destroy crops in minutes. These natural forces affect what we grow and when. Financially, we face tight margins. We try to keep prices affordable, but that makes it hard to survive and recover from the losses.
What will visitors get to experience when they visit your farm during the tour?
Visitors get a hands-on experience: Rod guides adults through the garden sharing tips and tricks, while Desley leads kids on a fun treasure hunt. There’s a garden-toplate cooking demo and the option to buy a garden to plate meal. Saturday evening we will have a bonfire, and community connection.
How important is community support and education when it comes to running a successful small farm?
Community support and education are vital. Our customers are friends who encourage us and help in tough times. Sharing our story helps people appreciate the effort behind their food and fosters trust. I believe that small farms don’t just grow food, they grow community.
TBEC & PETE ARMSTRONG FROM GRAZED & GROWN
ell us about your farm , what kind of animals do you raise and how long have you been doing it?
Grazed & Grown is a family-run farm located on the beautiful Comboyne Plateau. Our passion is in ethically raising beef cattle, pigs, sheep, and meat chickens in a way that prioritises animal welfare, rebuilds the land, and positively impacts our community. Our fully licensed, on-farm pig and poultry abattoir, “Ethical Endings” is testament to our commitment to animal welfare, and has enabled other local pig growers to stay in the industry after the next closest pig abattoir made it too costly for small producers to continue. With a fully equipped butchery and packing room, we provide our customers with a true “Paddock to Plate” experience. We’re a regenerative, mixed livestock farm that prioritises animal welfare, nutritional density of the meat, and improving the environment around us.
What does regenerative livestock farming mean to you and how is it reflected in your day-to-day practices?
Regenerative livestock farming means working in harmony with nature to rebuild soil health, improve biodiversity, and create resilient, thriving ecosystems, while producing nutrientdense food. It’s about leaving the land better
than we found it. Day to day, this is reflected in how we rotate our cattle, pigs, sheep, and chickens across pastures to mimic natural grazing patterns, which helps regenerate soil and promotes healthy grass growth. We avoid synthetic chemicals, instead relying on natural systems to manage pests and fertility. Every decision we make is guided by a deep respect for the land and a long-term vision for its restoration.
What are some challenges that come with raising livestock sustainably, and farming in general , and what are the rewards?
Being at the mercy of nature, weather extremes, pasture management, and feed availability can all be unpredictable. Sustainable farming also often requires more time, labour, and careful planning than conventional systems, especially when balancing animal welfare, soil health, and biodiversity. Processing our own meat onfarm adds another layer of responsibility and compliance, but it’s essential to maintaining our standards of care and transparency. Despite these challenges, the rewards are deeply meaningful. Watching the land heal, seeing animals thrive in a natural environment, and knowing we’re producing honest, nourishing food for our community makes it all worthwhile. The relationships we build, with our land, our animals, and the people who support our farm, are the greatest reward of all.

After 13 fabulous years of working side by side with the person who many think the business has been named after, it’s time to say goodbye to “Meg”.
Istill remember the day, over 13 years ago when I sat down with the then owner of Meg + Me, we’d just finished negotiating my purchase of the business, when she said to me, “I need to introduce you to Megan (Meg), you’d do well to keep her”.
And I did. I did do well to keep her, right up until this week when she confided in me that she was ready to embark on a new personal challenge. I get it. Retail is extremely rewarding, but it can also take a lot from you too. When you are as good at it and care as much about your interactions with customers as much as Meg and I do, it can take a toll. And while I’m not saying it has for us, I’m simply acknowledging that I understand when Meg says it’s time for a new direction. When speaking to others about the working relationship I have with Megs, I often use a few metaphors to help people understand how close we have become over the years. I recently described us as “puzzle pieces” fitting together “just so”. Then there’s been the hand in glove analogy and the “old married couple” has come up once or twice too. You get the picture, I’m sure.
You spend a lot of time at work, so you do your best to surround yourself with people
that you want to spend that much time with. You share and experience many of life’s big moments with the people you work with, and that can become both a privilege and a responsibility. That kind of closeness creates a unique bond - one built on mutual trust, respect, and shared purpose. It’s more than just a job; it’s almost like a second family, and sometimes even a sanctuary from life in the “real world”.
Over the years, Meg has become so much more than just a salesperson at Meg + Me. As I’ve committed to growing the business more and more behind the scenes, she’s become the in-store Face of Meg + Me, the person who warmly welcomes you into our space and makes you feel part of what we have created.
For me personally though, she’s been a sounding board through some pretty challenging times in business, right from the very start (some of you may remember those stories!) through to GFCs, COVID and everything in between. To date, we’ve always been there for each other.
One of Meg’s outstanding qualities is her ability to connect with people whether that be customers, suppliers, or workmates. Her genuine warmth and openness have ensured
that people always feel welcome in our space and I commit to continuing that legacy moving forward.
As the owner, I’m grateful beyond words for the loyalty, grace and care Meg has brought to her role at Meg + Me. We’ve laughed until we’ve cried (more than once, often on buying trips), tackled challenges head-on, and celerated every little win along the way. It’s been the kind of working relationship you don’t just find - but rather one that you build, over time, with mutual respect and trust.
While it’s hard to imagine the shop without Meg in it, I’m also incredibly proud of her for following her heart. Change can be bittersweet, but it also makes room for growth - for her and for all of us.
To our wonderful customers: thank you for being part of Meg’s journey. By the time this article goes to print, Meg will have officially spent her last day with us in store. And while her departure marks the end of an era, it’s also the beginning of a new chapter - for Meg and also for Ant and I and the Business. We invite you to join us as we embark on the newest chapter of Meg + Me... who knows what amazing things we can create? Whatever happens, it will always be with you in mind. x
Winter
WARDROBES AND ONE VERY FASHIONABLE FOOT BOOT
Let me set the scene. I’ve broken my foot. My toe's in on the drama too. I am meant to be dancing. I’m wearing a moon boot, trying to chase after my children, keep my business running, and somehow still pull together an outfit that says “cool mum,” not “I slipped on my office chair, sat on my own foot and lost all hope.”
I guess the silver lining (aside from the one on my X-ray) is that it's wide-leg pant season and my moon boot has never felt more seen. Forget summer skin, the fashion Gods have declared flowy linen trousers, barrel jeans and slouchy cargos the winter winners, and I, for one (boot), am grateful.
So, while I hobble my way through July, juggling life, work, and prepping for the ROAR Business Awards in Brisbane (yes, I’m a little nervous, and yes, I’m considering bedazzling the boot), I thought I’d share the real secret to staying stylish when it’s freezing: the art of the capsule wardrobe and layering like a pro. It’s Layer Season and we are here for it!
Layering isn’t just a styling hack, it’s a survival technique. When you’re leaving the house in 7-degree weather, but by 11am the sun’s pretending it’s summer again, strategic layering saves lives (or at least sweat patches).
Start with the basics:
• A ribbed knit tank or a long-sleeve cotton tee as your base.
• Add a crochet vest or a chunky oversized knit for texture.
• Top it all off with a denim style or neutral-toned trench coat, the capsule queen of winter coats but I am also bias to that warm hug feeling in a Teddy jacket
Not only does layering give you options, it also hides the odd stain from brekkie with the kids. Because what’s a mum wardrobe without a Weet-Bix smear?
Capsule Wardrobe = Sanity Saver
If you’ve ever stood in front of your wardrobe, wearing a towel, while your kids yell for snacks and you’re contemplating if you can get away with PJs to Woolies, then, my friend, it’s time to build your capsule wardrobe. Here’s how we’re doing it at The Curve Collective:
• Matching track pant sets, but good quality and well cut, enter in Zulu & Zephyr (Woolies approved and feels like PJ’s)
• Staples in neutral tones: whites & off whites, blacks, oatmeals, greys.
• Wide-leg trousers (moon boot optional).
• Oversized graphic or logo shirts, Moto tees,
with HAYLEY YOUNG FROM THE CURVE COLLECTIVE
button-ups, and knitted sets.
• A classic trench or wool coat to elevate any outfit.
• A touch of crochet, linen, or texture for that high-end, effortless feel.
Once your base is sorted, add just a few trend-driven pops of colour and this season, we’re loving:
• Wine red (because, same).
• Choc Coco Brown (red wine and chocolate, umm yes please).
• Baby blue (crisp and calm, the opposite of the school run).
• Lemon yellow (a dose of sunshine for your soul whilst your bones are freezing).
And don’t forget accessories. A tonal scarf, a matching beanie, or your fave crossbody bag can tie it all together.
So this winter, lean into comfort, embrace the art of layering, and build a capsule wardrobe that works for you, whether you're slaying the school drop-off, heading to a wine bar, or trying not to trip over a planter box (yes this happened) with a busted foot.
Fashion should feel good, boot and all.
See you in store (or online in your trackies).
Love Hayley x

Higgins Jenny
THE FLAMIN’ DRAGONS
After a powerhouse season that saw them bring home four bronze medals from the Australian Championships, the Flamin’ Dragons are proving that teamwork, tenacity and community spirit are a winning combination. We caught up with coach Jenny Higgins to reflect on their success, share what it takes to train for a world championship, and look ahead to Taiwan 2026.
Hi Jenny. Congratulations on a stellar season of paddling! How did it feel to come away from the Australian Dragon Boat Championships with four bronze medals?
Considering all the extra training that we did leading up to State Titles and Australian Championships, we were hoping for success but the results were more than we had anticipated and we were extremely proud to receive 4 bronze for our efforts.
The journey started at the NSW State Titles. What were the key lessons you took from that event into AusChamps?
State Titles is 500m racing and a 2km turn race – both of which were also on the programme for Aus Champs plus 200m sprints. We have always found that a good start to each race not only put us out in front but the other crews then had to work hard to catch our boat. However, with every effective start it is even better to finish with a strong run to the finish line – which we had
to improve on. We also had to practice our endurance paddling in preparation for the 2km race.
Your Senior B Women’s crew has now qualified for the 2026 Club Crews World Championships in Taiwan, what ran through the team’s mind when you got that news?
I received confirmation on Wednesday 21st May from Australian Dragon Boats which was right in the middle of our major flooding at Port Macquarie. Consequently we had no paddling for 2 weeks during and after the floods. It was not until Saturday 31st May that we were able to surprise the paddlers with the great news which was also our first day back at paddling. Paddlers were on a high with being able to get out on the water once again and were absolutely ecstatic once the proceedings started to unfold after our paddling session. Not only that, Rob Dwyer had organised a surprise visit to our celebrations down at the marina that morning and very proudly presented our paddlers with Hansard Reports
acknowledging our great results at State Titles and AusChamps which was mentioned during a Parliamentary sitting. I think that this may have been a major moment in time for Flamin’ Dragons.
For readers who might not be dragonboat insiders, what does the “Senior B” category mean, and what makes racing in that division unique?
Senior B is a division for paddlers over 50 years of age. It is unique for regional clubs as all North Coast and other regional regattas compete as Open Age crews (no restriction on age). Paddling in the Senior B division puts our paddlers to the test in major Sydney regattas and we have to train together in our respective age divisions.
Can you walk us through a typical training week for the Flamin Dragons, especially as you start gearing up for an international competition?
One of the major benefits in training for the big regattas is doing extra off-water training. Off-water training involves a lot more use of weights and strength work as well as a lot of
cardio work on the rowing machine – which is our major training tool for strength and cardio fitness. Boat fitness is very important but to have the added bonus of cardio fitness, strength and power can create a very strong crew in the boat and on the water. We will include in our training leading up to World Champs, boot camps with extended training in the boat and of course a lot of off-water training. Paddlers will be training 3 sessions per week plus off-water personal development at least twice a week.
Dragon boating is the ultimate team sport, what’s the chemistry like within the crew, and how do you keep everyone motivated through early mornings and tough sessions?
When it is pouring with rain or blowing a gale – it is really hard to stay focused on improving teamwork. It is so important for our crews to feel the improvement and cohesion with each session and once they have been rewarded with success the fire is alive in their bellies and they go all out for better achievements. As a coach I know that these paddlers are pumped and they love to have someone up the front making them go the extra yards in every session. If they finish a race and are not able to speak – I know that they have put everything into the race and that is what we train for relentlessly.
Heading to Taiwan in September 2026
means fundraising, logistics, and time management. What’s the game plan to get the crew across the world?
We will include in our training leading up to World Champs, boot camps with extended training in the boat and of course a lot of o -water training.
There will be a lot of fundraising by the paddlers to hopefully be able to have new uniforms designed and made for this momentous occasion. When you consider the fundraising, personal development, extra paddling sessions – time management will be crucial. But we have a great Team Manager who will organise the best possible plan for paddlers to work with and still enjoy their normal day to day family time and personal programs. It is extremely important to keep a balanced lifestyle but also excel and improve to justify this amazing opportunity to compete at Club Crews World Champs. The sport is growing in popularity across Australia. What advice would you give to someone thinking about picking up a paddle for the first time?
Dragon Boating is definitely growing in NSW at a fast rate – and we do have bragging rights to the highest registrations in Australia. We also have members who are too young to compete in the Senior B division and we
hope to encourage a lot more of these ‘younger’ paddlers throughout this year. Hopefully our achievements will encourage a lot more registrations for Flamin’ Dragons. We always hold at least 2 major Learn to Paddle campaigns throughout the year which consist of 5 free lessons. We also encourage anyone of any age to turn up each Saturday session to ‘have a go’. The Sydney clubs enlist a huge number of 20-40 year olds as well as Senior A (40 +), Senior B (50 +) & Senior C (60 +) paddlers. They all seem to have the ability to succeed and are all inspired to represent Australia at World Champs. Flamin’ Dragons have had many NSW representative paddlers and Australian paddlers. Flamin’ caters for the local schools throughout the warmer months each year. The students love competing in a dragon boat even if it is against their friends.
Dragon Boating is the best sport you can do sitting down!! It’s a great way to get fit. If you don’t like sitting down you can always try sweeping the boat.
Thanks Jenny.

Dr. Laura Pattison
Please introduce yourself to our readers.
Hello, I'm Dr. Laura Pattison. I’m a Brazilian-trained plastic and reconstructive surgeon currently practicing in Port Macquarie, New South Wales. I’ve dedicated my career to helping patients feel confident and cared for, whether through complex skin cancer treatment or cosmetic procedures. After completing my specialist training in Brazil and becoming a Fellow of the Brazilian Society of Plastic Surgery, I relocated to Australia with my family in 2022. I now work as a GP Skin Cancer Doctor at SunCheck Skin Cancer Care, where I combine precision, aesthetic insight, and compassion to deliver tailored, evidence-based care to every patient I see.
What led you to specialise in complex skin cancer treatment and reconstruction?
My interest in complex skin cancer treatment and reconstruction comes from a deep appreciation for both the science and art of surgery. During my training in plastic and reconstructive surgery in Brazil, I was drawn to cases that required not only precision but creativity, especially those involving skin cancer. I saw how life-changing it could be for patients to not only have their cancer removed but to also heal with dignity and confidence in their appearance.
After moving to Australia, I quickly became aware of how prevalent skin cancer is here. I felt that my background in reconstructive techniques
could make a meaningful impact, particularly in managing challenging cases or cancers located in delicate areas like the face. For me, it’s incredibly rewarding to restore both health and form - helping patients feel whole again after treatment.
What makes your approach to skin cancer reconstruction unique or different from others in the field?
My approach is shaped by my background in plastic and reconstructive surgery, where attention to both function and aesthetics is essential. I view every skin cancer case not just as something to remove, but as an opportunity to restore the patient’s confidence and comfort in their own skin.
Professionals
lesion - it’s about restoring a sense of self. What do you consider when recommending surgical vs. non-surgical skin cancer treatments?
When deciding between surgical and nonsurgical skin cancer treatments, I consider several key factors to ensure the most effective and appropriate care for each patient. The type, size, depth, and location of the lesion are critical - some superficial skin cancers respond well to topical treatments, while others require surgical excision to ensure complete removal and a higher cure rate.
During my training in plastic and reconstructive surgery in Brazil, I was drawn to cases that required not only precision but creativity, especially those involving skin cancer.
What sets my approach apart is the level of planning and precision I bring to each procedure, especially in high-visibility areas like the face. I consider factors like skin tension, natural contours, and scarring outcomes to achieve results that are not only medically sound but cosmetically thoughtful.
I also prioritise communication. I make sure patients understand their options, feel supported throughout the process, and are part of the decision-making. It’s not just about removing a
Ultimately, my goal is to choose the method that achieves the best medical outcome with the least impact on a patient’s quality of life. I always take time to explain the options and involve patients in the decision, so they feel informed, empowered, and confident in their care.

BRINGING SLOW MEDICINE AND SPECIALIST CARE TO PORT MACQUARIE
We’re thrilled to introduce Dr. Loman, a dedicated and passionate GP with a unique background that bridges physiotherapy, orthopaedics, and general practice. With roots in Hong Kong, training in the UK, and now proudly calling Australia home since 2009, Dr. Loman brings a truly global perspective to local healthcare. His deep connection to Port Macquarie dates back over 15 years, when he and his wife first fell in love with the region’s stunning coastline and community spirit. Now, he’s taking the next step in his medical journey by opening his own practice—one that champions “slow medicine” and accessible, evidence-based musculoskeletal care.
Hello Dr Loman, Can you introduce yourself to our readers and your connection to Port Macquarie?
In a nutshell, born and raised in HK, finished Uni in the UK and emigrated to Australia in 2009!
Port Mac has always been a special place for me. In the days “BC” (before children), my wife Brooke & I used to visit regularly with her work as a regional sales manager, this was over 15 years ago! We immediately fell in love with its glorious beaches, coastline and varied hinterland and knew it was the perfect place to raise a family. 5 years later a training position cropped up & the decision was made, our youngest daughter was born here!
What has your journey in medicine been like so far, and how did it lead you here?
I was only 13 when I sustained a significant rugby injury, requiring surgery and a long
period of rehab. My positive encounters with Physiotherapists made me want to be one! It didn’t stop there. I took a varied pathway via Sports Science, qualifying with a Bachelor with Honours in Physiotherapy in 2001. I spent many a weekend with local Rugby Clubs in the UK, managing players injuries and was fortunate to become the Yorkshire U18’s Physiotherapist winning the National County Championships at the home of Rugby UnionTwickenham for 2 consecutive years!
3 years later I decided to become a Doctor to pursue a career path in Orthopaedics. I gained more than 6 years experience, 5 years of which was as an Orthopaedic registrar spanning NSW and QLD.
The transition to General practice was familiar having up to 20% of its presentations being musculoskeletal, but for me, probably closer to 40% due to colleagues referring/patients knowing my background.
My patients know, I do what it takes to get it right!
Practicing “5 minute medicine” may sit on political agendas, and be suited to bigger practices. Not me, I believe in “Slow Medicine!
After 8 years of training and working as a GP from Camden Haven to Kempsey (including Port). I decided now, as the kids were getting a bit older, it was time for a change, and for me to set up my own clinic!
What’s most important to you when it comes to patient care?
Offering quality, evidence-based practice in a slow and concise manner, in the relaxed &
comfortable charm of a recently refurbished period cottage, within a medical precinct in Port Macquarie.
My patients know, I do what it takes to get it right! Practicing “5 minute medicine” may sit on some political agendas, and be suited to bigger practices. Not me, I believe in “Slow Medicine!” Where you take the time to listen and explore all differential diagnoses and patient treatment options.
What inspired you to open a new medical practice in Port Macquarie?
With forever increasing wait times for other specialist services such as Orthopaedic Surgery/ and Ultrasound guided imaging. I realised an opportunity to incorporate readily available treatment in my clinic. After completing post graduate studies specifically in ultrasound guided musculoskeletal injections (Australian Institute of Ultrasound), I was able to consolidate my knowledge and offer this service to the community.
Can you tell us more about the services your practice will offer?
We are currently offering musculoskeletal assessments for all members of the community, be it the sporting weekend warrior, the active geriatric patient who wishes to improve their quality of life, to a young child with an injury. It’s all about keeping fit to enable a healthy life at any age!
We provide ultrasound guided cortisone injections for osteoarthritis of any peripheral joint/ bursitis and Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) for tendonopathies, ligament injuries & plantar fasciitis. We do not use interventional treatments on spinal conditions, but are happy to offer a consultation for treatment advice. I am also passionate about good practice and our clinic holds a strict policy for not prescribing drugs of addiction or opioid therapy for non-cancer pain.
Will the practice have a particular focus or specialty?
Combining my unique professional insight to offer a specialised experience, triangulating from a Physiotherapy/Orthopaedics and General Practice perspective. Not many can say that can truly see it from all sides!
In a forever busy world- slow medicine is my basis!

Pain under or between your shoulder blades can be frustrating and sometimes a bit scary. It often feels like the pain is deep under the bone, and it can be hard to know if stretching or massage will help or make it worse. The good news is this kind of pain is common, and there are a few common reasons why it happens.
Common Symptoms:
• Dull, aching, or sharp pain under or between the shoulder blades
• Pain that travels up into the neck, especially when you turn your head
• Stiff or tight muscles in the upper back and neck
• A burning or tingling feeling in the painful area
• Pain that gets worse after sitting too long or moving your neck or arms a certain way
Why It Happens:
This pain often builds up over time and can be caused by more than one issue:
Poor Posture – Slouching while sitting at work, driving, or relaxing on the couch can strain the muscles in your neck and upper back.
Repetitive Movements – Doing the same arm or shoulder movements often, like in sports or workouts, can overwork muscles and create tight knots.
Stress – When you’re stressed, your muscles can tighten without you knowing it—especially in your shoulders and neck.
Sleep Position – Sleeping in a bad position or on a mattress that doesn’t support you can lead
to pain in your upper back and neck. Nerve Compression – Sometimes a disc in your neck can press on a nerve, which can cause pain under the shoulder blade or even down your arm.
If this sounds like what you’re going through, don’t ignore it. Get in touch with us today to find out how we can help you feel better and move more easily.

TAND SKIN REHAB
- your partner for individualised and holistic health with Jennifer Hookham, Director
he importance of regular skin checks is paramount in Australia for adults. How can The Dermal Health Alliance assist clients keep on top of regular skin checks to retain healthy skin as we age? Skin health includes overall barrier resilience, skin integrity and wound healing potential. As our skin is the primary line of defence for the body, it is often the first organ to show the impact of ageing from intrinsic factors such as diet, lifestyle, comorbidities or other health issues and also the extrinsic or environmental factors. The best way to retain a healthy skin is with consistent preventative and regenerative strategies that I perform in my clinic, Skin Rehab and also through the early detection of skin cancers and melanoma.
What regenerative strategies for skin rehabilitation are available to clients? My area of specialisation is in the non-aesthetic, evidence based regenerative strategies for skin rehabilitation from sun damage, premature ageing and skin disorder management. These include resurfacing science, electrotherapies and EmCyte Pure® Platelet Rich Plasma for hair restoration, dermal regeneration and wound healing.
How can we ensure we are ageing healthily and preventing as much skin damage as possible? Keeping it simple and targeted! Simple skincare for home regimes with a focus on targeted active ingredients like antioxidants, peptides, ceramide-stimulating and barrier protecting products. Sun protection on a daily basis, regular health and skin assessments to
adjust routines and treatments when needed. I understand the business also conducts workplace skin checks for time poor busy people. What a fantastic initiative. How can individuals or businesses book their appointment? Workplace wellness initiatives are something I have been actively working in for 10 years. I recognised a lack of these services in the Hastings area and have hit the ground running with some of our largest employers. For Expressions of Interest, direct contact with myself or staff can be done via email, phone call or face to face.
Why Is My Child Always Constipated?
UNDERSTANDING AND MANAGING CHILDHOOD CONSTIPATION
Constipation in children is far more common than most parents realise and often goes unnoticed until it becomes a real problem. Whether it’s a toddler who strains to poo, a preschooler avoiding the toilet, or a school-aged child with belly aches and soiled undies, constipation can affect a child’s physical comfort, emotional wellbeing, and success with toilet training.
How
Common Is Constipation
in Kids?
According to the Royal Children’s Hospital Melbourne, up to 30% of children will experience constipation. It’s one of the most common reasons families seek medical or physiotherapy advice.
Constipation can begin during key transitions:
• Starting solids
• Toilet training
• Beginning school
• After illness or antibiotics
Many children won’t complain, but the signs are there if you know what to look for.
Signs of Constipation
Kids don’t always say, “I can’t poo.” Signs may include:
• Hard, dry stools
• Painful poos that block the toilet
• Infrequent bowel movements (less than 3 per
week)
• Straining or hiding to poo
• Tummy pain, bloating, or poor appetite
• Soiling (often mistaken for diarrhoea)
• Encopresis, where liquid stool leaks around a blockage, is common and can cause embarrassment and behavioural challenges if not addressed.
Why Does It Happen?
Constipation is usually functional, not due to disease. Contributing factors include:
• Low fibre and water intake
• Withholding due to fear, past pain, or being busy
• Poor posture: Feet dangling off the toilet makes it harder to poo
• Stress and change: New environments disrupt routines
• Neurodiversity: Children with autism or ADHD may struggle with body awareness or sensory aversions, affecting toileting
The Bowel–Bladder Connection
A full bowel can press against the bladder, causing:
• Daytime wetting
• Bedwetting
• Higher risk of UTIs
Addressing constipation often improves bladder control, especially during toilet training.
How Can Continence Physiotherapy Help?
Continence physiotherapists support kids with constipation and toilet troubles using a holistic, child-friendly approach.
We help with:
• Transabdominal ultrasound: To assess bowel and bladder status
• Toilet positioning: Teaching proper posture using a footstool
• Routine and behaviour strategies: Creating a consistent, stress-free toilet schedule
• Bowel diaries and education: Tracking patterns and empowering the child
• Coordinated care: Working with doctors if stool softeners or other medications are needed
When to Get Help
Seek help if your child is:
• Pooing less than 3 times a week
• Avoiding the toilet or soiling
• Complaining of tummy pain or withholding
• Struggling with toilet training
• Wetting during the day or night
Early support can prevent long-term issues. You’re Not Alone
Constipation is common—but you don’t have to wait it out. With the right support, children can return to healthy, regular bowel habits without fear, fuss, or family frustration.
Gum
& THE REVOLUTIONARY LASER TREATMENT
LANAP
WHAT IS GUM DISEASE AND WHAT SHOULD WE BE LOOKING OUT FOR?
e first sign of gum disease (gingivitis) is inflammation or swelling of the gums. is occurs when bacteria in plaque and calculus are not removed through brushing or regular scale and cleans, causing damage to the gums.
Advanced stages of gum disease (periodontitis) occur when the inflammation of the gums gets worse, causing the supportive tissue and bone supporting the teeth to degenerate. Without professional intervention and treatment, over time the teeth can become loose and may need to be extracted by a dentist. Unfortunately, many patients are unaware of their periodontal health until their teeth become loose or their gums shrink and start to bleed.
Some of the symptoms you should look out for are:
• Red, swollen, tender or bleeding gums
• Gums that have shrunk from the teeth
• Bad breath or bad taste in the mouth
• Abscesses between teeth and gums
• Loose teeth
When a patient comes to us with any of these symptoms we take periodontal measurements with a small probe that records the depths of the pockets around the teeth to generate a “perio chart”. These results are an important part of your dental records and allow us to monitor changes over time. Sometimes it may be many years before a specific treatment or intervention is needed.
What treatments are available for gum disease? Treatments depend on the severity of the gum disease. Mild to moderate
gum disease can be treated with brushing, flossing and regular visits to your hygienist and dentist. Treatment for more severe gum disease can vary from subgingival deep cleaning of the gum pockets to treatment with a laser in a specific area or the full mouth using the revolutionary LANAP technology. Tell us about the LANAP treatment and how it improves patient health? Many older Australians (and some younger patients too) suffer from chronic or progressive gum disease. This can erode the foundation of a healthy smile and cause bad breath, loose teeth and eventually the loss of healthy teeth. There are links between gum health and systemic health conditions such as heart disease, diabetes and other conditions such as arthritis and Alzheimer’s disease.
When I moved to the area in 2006, I saw that this was a serious condition for many of my patients. Treatments available at the time were limited and could result in “long teeth”, receding gums and chronic sensitivity. This led me to look for a better solution.
I wanted a lasting treatment for my patients with gum disease that would also benefit their long-term health by looking after their gums and connective tissue, not just their teeth.
In 2010, while I was studying overseas I became aware of LANAP - the first FDAapproved laser treatment for gum disease - and I decided to study and invest in this
new technology. I saw the potential benefits immediately, and now, more than a decade later, I am so glad I took that leap of faith because LANAP has enabled hundreds of my patients to improve their gum health and keep their teeth and smile healthy for life. What does LANAP treatment involve?
LANAP laser therapy has changed the way patients experience treatment for gum disease. Patients who have been treated with LANAP have described their treatment as “smile changing or life changing”.
Unlike traditional gum surgery, there is no cut and sew, no long and exposed teeth and sensitivity afterwards. LANAP is primarily used to treat moderate and advanced gum disease but it can also be used to target pockets as well.
LANAP is a minimally invasive and highly effective treatment because the laser targets the pigment in the infected tissues. LANAP uses a multivariable-pulsed laser to kill the infected tissue and stimulates the healing factors of the connective tissue, gums and bone that support your teeth. Some patients have experienced true regeneration of tissue and bone formation in the valleys around the compromised teeth.

Your skin changes as you age— your skincare should too.
free radicals
At PMAC, we believe in personalised, science-backed routines that evolve with your skin through each decade. What works in your 20s likely won’t suit your skin in your 50s.
Understanding how your skin functions at every stage allows you to proactively protect, support, and nourish it.
Here’s how to care for your skin from your 20s to your 60s and beyond—with guidance grounded in skin science and clinical experience.
IN YOUR 20S: PROTECT & PREVENT
This decade is about laying the foundation. Consistent habits now help prevent long-term damage and premature ageing.
Focus on:
• Gentle cleanser twice daily to remove oil, pollution, and makeup
• SPF 50+ every day—rain or shine
• Exfoliate 1–2 times weekly with AHAs/BHAs for clarity and brightness
• Moisturisers with ceramides and hyaluronic acid to support the barrier
• Niacinamide to regulate oil, calm inflammation, and prevent breakouts
IN YOUR 30S: BRIGHTEN & STRENGTHEN
Hormonal shifts, stress, and lifestyle factors may lead to early signs of ageing like dullness or fine lines. The goal: boost radiance and strengthen defences.
Focus on:
• SPF 50+ daily to protect from environmental damage
• Vitamin C serums to brighten and neutralise
BUILD A SKINCARE ROUTINE THAT EVOLVES WITH YOU:YOUR 20S TO YOUR 60S
• Retinol to support collagen and improve texture
• Eye creams for hydration and early line prevention
• Gentle exfoliation to maintain cell turnover
• Niacinamide to soothe and reinforce the barrier
IN YOUR 40S: FIRM & RESTORE
As collagen declines, skin may feel drier and less firm. Nourishing, targeted ingredients become essential.
Focus on:
• Daily SPF 50+ to prevent cumulative UV damage
• Prescription-strength retinols for visible antiageing
• Peptides and growth factors to stimulate repair
• Rich moisturisers and weekly hydrating masks
• Gentle exfoliants (buffered acids or enzymes)
• Niacinamide to improve elasticity and calm the skin
IN YOUR 50S: SUPPORT & REPLENISH
Menopausal changes can cause dryness, sensitivity, and thinning. Your focus should shift to comfort, resilience, and hydration.
Focus on:
• SPF 50+ to reduce thinning and pigmentation
• Ceramide-rich moisturisers to rebuild the barrier
• Retinoids or bakuchiol, depending on tolerance
• Hormone-supportive creams for oestrogendeficient skin
• Firming serums with peptides or growth factors
• Niacinamide to soothe and support cellular repair
IN YOUR 60S AND BEYOND: SOOTHE & STRENGTHEN
Skin becomes more delicate with age. Protecting and preserving your skin’s integrity is key.
Focus on:
• Daily SPF 50+ to prevent further thinning and sun damage
• Non-stripping, creamy cleansers to avoid dryness
• Rich, occlusive moisturisers and masks for deep hydration
• Antioxidants to defend against ongoing environmental stress
• Niacinamide to reduce redness and support barrier function

WHAT IS ANXIETY & WAYS TO MANAGE ANXIETY
Everyone experiences some degree of stress at different stages and during various situations throughout their life.
Stress is the body’s natural way of responding to either a perceived or real threat. Feeling anxious is a symptom of stress. It’s not so much that we experience anxiety, but rather how we respond when stressed—and how we manage the anxiety that may follow. Identifying our personal triggers and signs of anxiety is important in managing it effectively. When we know the triggers and are aware of the signs, we are better able to respond to our thoughts and feelings in a positive way—before anxiety escalates.
QUICK TIP #1:
Take a deep inhale through your nostrils. Then, through your nostrils, exhale slowly, extending the breath out. Repeat 5–10 times.
FIVE WAYS TO HELP MANAGE ANXIETY
1. ACKNOWLEDGE that you are feeling anxious.
2. TAKE A BREAK.
Take a pause to slow your breathing down.
3. CHALLENGE NEGATIVE THOUGHTS.
Take a moment to question your thoughts. Is the threat real, or is it simply a possibility—something that hasn’t even happened yet?
4. RECONNECT WITH YOURSELF & CONNECT WITH OTHERS.
Engage in healthy activities:
Take a walk, exercise, get creative, do some gardening, listen to calming music, go for a
swim, finish a jigsaw puzzle, get doodling, sketch, try calligraphy, collect shells on the beach, wander in a park or by the ocean and take photos of the natural beauty around you.
5. PRACTISE MINDFULNESS.
Mindfulness helps slow your reaction to thoughts and feelings.
It creates space between one thought and the next—allowing you to adjust and replace a negative thought with a more helpful one, slowing the snowball effect of anxiety.
Practising mindfulness helps you step back and detach, seeing anxiety as a passing experience— something that may come, but will also go.
QUICK TIP #2: PRACTISE THE 333 TECHNIQUE
• Identify 3 things you can see
• Identify 3 sounds you can hear
• Identify 3 things you can touch
Without judgment, notice the shapes, colours, patterns, and movement.
Notice the sounds near you and in the background.

Hi Sagnik, Port Smiles is proud to welcome new and existing patients to the state of the art clinic at 21 Hollingworth Street, Port Macquarie. What are you most excited about offering patients in the new space? As a locally family owned business, we’re most excited to offer our patients an enhanced experience in a modern, comfortable setting equipped with the latest dental technology. The new clinic allows us to provide even more efficient, precise, and personalised care while maintaining the friendly, patient-focused approach Port Smiles is known for. We had everything customised for the patient comfort and care, starting from wide hallways for accessibility, patient education tools, and our own car parking at rear. The process takes considerable planning, and we wanted to ensure it was done right to continue servicing the beautiful community well into the future.
We’re committed to providing gentle, high-quality care in a welcoming environment to support healthy smiles at every stage of life.

and to contribute to improving the health and confidence of so many individuals through quality dental care. Without the continuing support of the patients, the community, we would not be where we are today.
What dental trends are you seeing in the industry today that relate to general oral health? We’re seeing a strong focus on prevention, with patients more engaged in maintaining their oral health through regular check-ups and better home care. Advances in technology—like digital scanning, removable sequential aligners, and digital diagnostic imaging—are making care more accurate, accessible, and efficient. There’s also a growing awareness of the connection between oral health and overall wellbeing, leading to more holistic approaches in treatment.

GEOFF YOUNG & MICK WADICK
PORT MACQUARIE
TABLE TENNIS CLUB
Since its humble beginnings in 2000 with just four tables, the Port Macquarie Table Tennis Club has grown into a thriving, inclusive hub for players of all ages and abilities. We spoke with club members Geo Young and Mick Wadick about the club’s welcoming atmosphere, community spirit, and what makes table tennis such a lifelong sport.
Cthe history of the Port Macquarie Table Tennis Club and how it has evolved over the years?
Port Macquarie Table Tennis Club started around the year 2000 with four tables. By 2015 we had 12 tables and they were all regularly in use at Bourne House. In 2020 we had to vacate Bourne House and now are located across 2 venues (Girl Guides in Hollingworth St and Port Macquarie Indoor Stadium). During our growth we have had schools and a number of disability groups playing at the club with our members volunteering their time to help. We have also had junior teams tour New Zealand and always have a number of teams playing in the yearly NSW Country Championships and City vs Country.
What do you think makes table tennis such a popular sport within the local community?
Table tennis is a sport for all levels and ages. People from pre-teens to much older (we have an 87 year old who is still very competitive) can play. It can be played both socially and competitively. Especially for the older generation it is a great physical exercise with very little stress on joints. Perhaps even more importantly it is a fantastic mental game where you need to really concentrate (and forget about all other
worries) while you are playing.
Your club welcomes everyone from juniors to seniors and players of all abilities — how important is that inclusive approach to your club's identity?
O en people who cannot play just drop in for a social. Many friendships have been formed from players within the club, although I am not aware of any marriages!
Inclusivity is at the heart of the club. We welcome everyone. We even have some specially designed wheelchair friendly tables. Over the years we have had many disabled groups come and play. It has also been an avenue for people new to the area to meet and integrate with locals.
Can you describe the sense of community that’s formed among players at your club?
It is a very friendly club and the atmosphere reflects this. Often people who cannot play just drop in for a social. Many friendships have been formed from players within the club, although I am not aware of any marriages! Many new people to the area come and play and start socialising with the locals.
What’s a typical playing session like at one of your venues?
There are two venues and many types of playing sessions. Once per month we have a competition day but otherwise we mix singles and doubles social play. Many players just like
to practice on the social days. Also, there are many experienced players more than happy to help those who wish to improve their game. Having said all that, the main play is social. What would you say to someone who’s never played table tennis but is curious to give it a go?
Come and give it a go. There will be many experienced players who will be more than happy to help. Also, just have fun!
What’s on the calendar for the rest of the year — any special events or goals for the club?
We will have club championships later in the year where we have both an Open competition and a B grade comp. This will include singles and doubles. All members of the club are welcome to play.
How can people in the Port Macquarie area get involved or come along for a hit?
We have a Facebook page and website. We keep it updated to reflect venues and times. Otherwise contact Mick at mick59wests@ hotmail.com. Generally we play on Monday and Wednesday evenings at 50 Hollingworth St (from 4:30pm) and Sundays from 10:30am at the Indoor Sports Stadium.
Thanks Guys.
Experts Meet the
Farnsworth FINANCIAL
As we tick over to a new financial year, it’s the perfect time to reassess your financial situation and gear up for the year ahead. Whether you’re an experienced investor or new to managing your finances, this transition offers a chance to reflect, plan, and set yourself up for success. Here’s your guide to navigating the end of one financial year (EOFY) and kicking off the new one on the right foot. Before diving into new plans, reflect on your financial performance over the past year. Review your income, expenses, and savings. Did you stick to your budget, or did you overspend in certain areas? Analyse your financial and bank statements to identify patterns and areas for improvement. Understanding your habits is crucial for making informed decisions.
Set SMART Financial Goals
With a clear picture of your past, it’s time to look ahead. Set SMART goals - Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Timebound. Instead of vague aspirations like “I want to save more,” craft precise objectives. For example, “I will save $37,500 for a home deposit by June 30 next year.” Clarity helps you stay motivated and focused.
Budget Wisely
A well-structured budget is your blueprint
for the year. Update it to align with your new goals. Ensure it includes essential expenses, savings targets, and discretionary spending. Consider using Australian government budgeting tools or apps to help manage your finances. A balanced approach like the 50/30/20 rule - needs, wants, and savings/debt - can guide your allocations.
Prepare for Tax Season
With EOFY comes tax time. Gather necessary documents: payment summaries, receipts for deductions, and investment statements. Work with your accountant to minimise tax payable and plan ahead. Let them know if you intend to buy property in the next 12 months so they can guide you accordingly.
Build or Enhance Your Emergency Fund
An emergency fund is a vital safety net for unexpected expenses like medical bills or car repairs. If you haven’t started one, aim for three to six months of living expenses in an offset or high-interest savings account. This fund offers peace of mind and financial stability.
Educate Yourself Continuously
The finance world is always changing. Dedicate time to learning through Australian books, podcasts, or courses. Resources like ASIC’s MoneySmart website offer valuable information. Staying informed empowers you
to make smarter financial decisions and adapt to evolving market conditions.
Review Insurance Policies
As the new financial year begins, review your insurance coverage - health, car, home, and life. Ensure your policies match your current needs. Life changes like a new job, marriage, or buying a home may require updates. Shopping around may also lead to significant savings. Seek professional advice if needed.
Review Your Lending
With rate cuts already this year, now’s a great time to review your lending with a broker. Ensure your interest rate is competitive and your loan suits your needs. Don’t pay a loyalty tax to your bank. Work with a broker on strategies to reduce debt and build equity.
As you move into the new financial year, remember: preparation and reflection are key to achieving your goals. By reviewing the past, setting clear objectives, and planning ahead, you’ll be in a strong position. Embrace the new year with confidence and a commitment to Here’s to a prosperous year ahead! making informed financial choices.
Sis
What services do you offer, and how do you approach building a custom marketing solution for each client?
At Pickled Pear Media, we offer full-service marketing designed to meet each client exactly where they are and help them grow from there. Our work is grounded in strategy and fuelled by creativity, data, and hands-on collaboration. We don’t believe in cookie-cutter solutions. Instead, we craft marketing that’s meaningful, measurable, and tailored to your brand’s personality, goals, and capacity. Our core services include strategic marketing development, content creation, social media management, brand positioning, campaign design and execution, and performance analytics. We’re also passionate about capability building. That’s why we offer practical, handson training for in-house teams and one-on-one marketing consultations. We help businesses not only run successful campaigns but also build confidence in their own marketing decisionmaking over time.
Once the strategic foundation is set, we map out an execution plan that reflects your capacity and priorities. Whether you want to partner with us to take the lead or a team to support your in-house marketing function, we adapt to your needs. Some clients want done-for-you campaigns; others want co-pilots who can guide,
advise, and uplift their own marketing team. We do both, and I believe we do it well. At the heart of our work is momentum. We believe great marketing doesn’t just “look good”; it performs, evolves, and moves your business forward. What are the biggest marketing trends you’re seeing in 2025? While marketing trends often shift with technology and consumer behaviour, one thing remains unchanged in 2025: the enduring importance of strategy and testing. No matter how shiny or new a tactic is, without a strong foundation in strategic thinking and experimentation, it won’t deliver sustainable value. That said, there’s no denying that AI continues to be a significant force in marketing this year. It’s no longer just a buzzword; it’s a core part of the marketing tech stack. From content creation and personalisation to automation, campaign planning, and data analysis, AI is enabling teams to move faster and smarter. It’s changing how we deliver marketing, not why we do it. Our advice? Use AI where it counts. Automate repeatable tasks, use generative tools to spark ideas or accelerate content production, and lean on AI-powered insights to optimise performance. But don’t lose sight of the human element. Strategy still requires critical thinking, creativity still requires context, and relationships still require connection. AI is a brilliant enabler, but it’s most effective when it supports, not replaces, the marketer’s intuition and experience. Test, play, iterate. Build on what’s working. That’s
how you stay ahead.
What’s one piece of advice you’d give to a business just starting to invest in marketing? Start with a clear strategy. It doesn’t need to be complicated, but it does need to be intentional. Know your market, understand your positioning, and define what makes your brand valuable and relevant. From there, build a plan that’s agile and actionable.
Most importantly, adopt a mindset of testing. Test your messaging. Test your channels. Test your visuals. And make a habit of checking your metrics. Marketing is a feedback loop, and the most successful brands are the ones that pay attention to what resonates with their audience and aren’t afraid to adjust based on the results.
Remember, while the platforms and tools have evolved, the fundamentals of marketing haven’t changed. Relevance, consistency, storytelling, and connection still matter. What’s different today is how we deliver those fundamentals. The businesses that succeed are the ones who stay focused on the why and flexible with the how.

How do you tailor your support services to meet the unique needs of each individual? We believe that support should never be one size fits all. We tailor our services by taking the time to get to know each person; what brings them joy, what they find challenging, what goals they want to achieve, and how they want to live their life including their
obvious care needs. We work closely with participants, their families, and support networks to create flexible, individualised support plans. We liaise with other health professionals and work collectively together to our own strengths to support the individual.
Families and caregivers are o en the unsung heroes, and they need support too. We o er guidance, resources, and respite to help ease the pressures that can come with caring for a loved one.
We also continually adapt our services as people’s needs and goals evolve. We are their biggest advocates and believe in creating a world without barriers to a fulfilling life. Do you provide support for families or caregivers of people with disabilities or mental health issues? Absolutely! Families and caregivers are often the unsung heroes, and they need support too. We offer guidance, resources, and respite to help ease the pressures that can come with caring for a loved one. Whether it’s a listening ear, helping to navigate the NDIS, or providing practical day to day assistance, we’re here for the whole support network, not just the participant. What is the process for someone
interested in accessing your services? The first step is simply reaching out. We welcome calls, emails, or even just a chat over coffee. From there, we take the time to understand what supports are needed and how we can help. We’ll walk individuals and families through every step of the process, from service agreements to matching with the right support workers. Whether someone is newly accessing the NDIS or looking to change providers, we make the transition as smooth and personal as possible. We’re here to make sure no one feels like they’re just a number.

What are the most popular off-grid power systems you’re installing right now? The off-grid systems we are currently building in vehicles, caravans and motorhomes begin with ensuring the customer’s needs are identified
and matched with the correct products. Most off grid systems simply require a lithium battery upgrade along with additional solar to ensure their system is selfsufficient.
e o -grid systems we are currently building in vehicles, caravans and motorhomes begin with ensuring the customer’s needs are identified and matched with the correct products.
The larger systems built for long term travel or for families will often include a larger battery and solar system along with additional products such as an upgrade to the charging system and an inverter to run 240V appliances such as a microwave, coffee machine or toaster.
What should someone consider before installing a solar or battery system in their caravan or 4WD? There are several things to consider. Most importantly, find a qualified and experienced tradesman who can design and install a system built to the customers exact needs. An upgrade does not always require removing the old system or adding unnecessary cost.
Consider the way you will use your system, what appliances you want to run when off grid and how long you wish to remain off grid. Are the products being used good quality? The use of high-quality products lowers the risk of failure and ensures your safety when on the road. Are these products backed by reputable companies and installers who provide genuine support when needed? Yes, absolutely! Peace of mind when travelling makes for a great experience without the worry.

1/3 Albert Circuit, Port Macquarie
Can you tell us a bit about your journey and how you got started in your field?
My journey in the construction industry started like most, as an apprentice here in Port Macquarie. I’ve always been someone who’s deeply driven by the idea of doing more, providing more and creating something meaningful. What’s always stood out to me in this industry is the creativity, the problemsolving and the satisfaction that comes with seeing someone’s dream become a reality. After working across both residential and commercial projects, I knew I wanted to build something of my own. Not in a big corporate kind of way, but something personal. Something that puts people first. That’s the foundation of WHG Projects. We’re a small, family-run team but what we offer is far from small. We combine expert craftsmanship with a people-first mindset and we treat our clients like one of our own.
Our motto is to help people reimagine life and for us, that means bringing to fruition the ‘what would my best life look like’ in terms of the spaces they surround themselves in everyday. Whether it’s a new build or a renovation, our goal is to elevate the
WHG PROJECTS
way people live by delivering high-quality, beautifully functional spaces that feel just right for them.
In your expert opinion, what are the top three most important things to consider when choosing a builder?
• Communication - You want a builder who keeps you in the loop without you having to chase. One who welcomes questions, no matter how big or small and makes you feel supported from start to finish. Clear, consistent updates should be the norm, not the exception.
• Transparency and Trust - A builder should be upfront about scope, pricing, timelines and potential challenges. If something feels too good to be true, it probably is. Choose someone who values honesty over selling you a dream they can’t deliver.
• Genuine Care - It’s important to have a relationship with your builder. One where you genuinely feel like they have your best interests at heart. The right builder will take the time to get to know you, understand what’s important to you and tailor the experience so that it feels collaborative, supportive and completely unique to your needs.
What makes WHG Projects the builder to
choose for renovations or new builds?
At WHG Projects, we pride ourselves on delivering the best because we lead with people. We’re not the biggest builder in town but that’s exactly why we’re able to offer such a personalised experience. We get to know our clients on a deeper level, beyond the transactional. We want to understand not just what they want to build but why. What they’re dreaming of, what they need day-today and how they want to feel in their space. We combine that insight with high-end craftsmanship, sharp project management and genuine passion for what we do. We’re on the ground, hands-on and across every detail. We bring a steady, solutions-focused approach that gives our clients confidence and clarity. Our builds speak for themselves but it’s the relationships we build with clients that really set us apart. We care. We communicate. We deliver.

GATHER & PLACE
OWNER / HEAD STYLIST
ow would you describe your signature style when it comes to home staging and interior styling? We’re brave with our choices, not afraid to mix textures, play with pattern, and layer pieces that bring depth and warmth to a space. Our style walks the line between bold and grounded. We love rich materials, meaningful details, and creating rooms that feel both elevated and lived-in.
There’s always a sense of comfort woven through our work. Whether we’re styling a home to sell or for someone to live in, our goal is to create a space that makes people feel something. That could be a sense of calm, a feeling of connection, or just the joy of walking into a beautiful, well-balanced room. It’s that mix of confidence and comfort, brave yet homely that defines our signature style. How do you approach styling a home that’s going on the market versus one for a client to live in? It all comes down to purpose.
When we’re styling a home that’s about to hit the market, we’re telling a story that’s designed to appeal to a wide audience. It’s about enhancing the home’s natural beauty, creating flow between rooms, and helping potential buyers emotionally connect with the space. We focus on making it feel light, open, and aspirational, like the kind of home people
can imagine themselves living in.
Styling a home for someone to live in is a completely different approach. It’s deeply personal. We’re not just thinking about the visual flow, but how the space needs to function day to day — how people live, gather, relax, and move through their home. We get to play more with colour, texture, and sentimental pieces. The styling becomes a reflection of the people who live there, not just the space itself.
So while both require creativity and care, styling to sell is about broad appeal and simplicity, while styling to live is about storytelling and individuality.
Do you have any favourite pieces or styling elements you keep coming back to? Definitely, artwork. It’s always the first thing I gravitate toward when designing a space. There’s just something about the mood it sets, the emotion it can stir, and the personality it brings into a room. We’ve curated an incredible collection in our warehouse, filled with pieces I truly love, and they often become the anchor for the rest of the styling.
I’ll frequently build an entire room around a single artwork, pulling tones, textures, and shapes from it to form everything else from furniture to styling accents. Whether it’s bold and abstract or soft and earthy, artwork is the heartbeat of a room. It draws the eye,
invites emotion, and gives the space its unique character. It’s not just a finishing touch, it’s often where the whole vision begins.
What advice would you give homeowners who want to refresh their space on a budget? Start with what you already have. One of the most effective and cost-free ways to refresh a space is to rework your existing pieces. Move furniture around, try a different layout, or bring a piece from one room into another. Sometimes a fresh perspective is all it takes. Next, focus on smaller updates that bring instant lift. Think new cushion covers, a cosy throw, updated lampshades, or a piece of art that speaks to you. Greenery is another powerful and affordable way to bring a space to life, whether it’s a big leafy plant or a small bunch of fresh flowers.
Most importantly, focus on how the space feels, not just how it looks. Your home should reflect you and your style, your energy, your story. Even on a budget, you can create a space that feels layered, intentional, and totally yours.

MANAGEMENT
Please introduce yourself to our readers.
I’m Daniel Wilson, Licensee of PURE Property Management Mid North Coast. We’re a dedicated commercial property and asset management company, laser-focused on the Mid North Coast and backed by a strong national network.
Our growing local team services clients from Port Macquarie through to Coffs Harbour, Grafton, and everywhere in between. What sets PURE apart is our unique model – a collection of locally operated offices, each staffed by passionate professionals with deep community connections and a strong understanding of the local market.
While our day-to-day operations are regionally focused, our reach is national. We’re connected to a wide-ranging tenant database across Australia, which we engage with regularly and proactively – giving our clients the best of both worlds: local expertise with national strength. How does your focus on property management differ from other agencies?
At PURE, we specialise exclusively in commercial property management – it’s all we do. This singular focus ensures every detail
is handled with precision, giving our clients peace of mind and maximising returns on their investment.
We believe great property management starts with great relationships. We work closely with tenants to help them succeed and thrive within their lease, which in turn minimises vacancy and maximises asset value for our landlords.
Our mission is simple: to help every stakeholder benefit from high-quality, hands-on commercial property management. Our clients often tell us they appreciate our proactive, responsive approach and the confidence it gives them in their investment.
What does treating clients “as people, not numbers” look like in your day-to-day operations?
At PURE, it’s all about people. We’re committed to building long-term, meaningful relationships, not transactional ones. That means being present, being responsive, and truly understanding the needs of our clients, tenants, and team.
Everyone we work with is an individual, with their own definition of success. We take the time to listen, to understand goals and priorities, and to support them in achieving those outcomes.
It’s a mindset that runs through everything we do – and to us, it just makes PURE sense.
What specific services do you offer to make property ownership stress-free for your clients?
We believe property ownership should feel effortless. At PURE, every client has a single point of contact – someone who knows their property inside and out, and is always just a phone call or email away.
We prioritise clear, consistent communication and treat every property as if it were our own. From maintenance coordination to lease administration and proactive tenancy management, we handle it all – so our clients can focus on what matters most to them, with the confidence their asset is in capable hands.

PRODUCTIVITY, WORKPLACE RELATIONS AND E= mc 2
The news is awash with clamours for increased productivity. Google AI defines “productivity growth” as “producing more with the same or fewer resources. This can be achieved by working more efficiently, using better technology or improving processes” i.e working smarter not harder to produce more goods and services leading to higher incomes and a better quality of life.
Whilst business investment in capital such as machinery, technology and equipment is important to productivity growth, so is positive workplace culture.
Gallup’s state of the Global Workplace 2025 report estimates that disengagement of the workforce cost the world economy $438 billion in 2024. We probably don’t need Gallup to tell us that when we are disengaged at work we are less productive. We are also less happy and more likely to be involved in conflict.
Ivana Kovacevic says “it is not about pizzas and drinks on a Friday night”. Positive culture, according to Kovacevic, can be broken down into 3 areas – all aimed at building trust:
• Communication
• Meaningful work
• Genuine care for the team and building collaboration
With respect to communication, she advises:
• Listen more and ask to understand (not to respond) then follow up by actioning the feedback to make improvements
• Practice open communication and transparent sharing of information – communicate often to avoid people filling in the blanks
• Have courageous conversations with clarity and kindness
Meaningful work, according to Kovacevic, involves aligning everyone towards a common goal which also enables prioritisation. Providing your team with growth opportunities such as educational opportunities, mentoring and coaching - which also improve skill levels and engagement adding to productivity as well as well-being.
But Kovacevic says dealing with capacity issues is key to the success of the other actions that leaders can take with respect to workplace culture. Capacity issues relate to not having the requisite time or skills to deal with the work. If there is an issue in relation to an employee’s capacity, Kovacevic says “roll up your sleeves and explore alternative ways to understand and address capacity issues from utilising technology to better prioritisation and creating risk informed materiality thresholds”.
Positive workplace culture is clearly a win-win – happier workers who are more productive results in improved living standards for workers
and greater efficiencies – resulting in greater economic benefits.
So, what does all of this have to do with law? Employers who don’t have the trust of their employees are much more likely to not only experience poor productivity but also experience workers exercising their workplace rights.
Employers have to navigate the complexities of the burdens of compliance obligations and the challenge of balancing employee rights and the needs of the business. This is much easier if the employer has the trust of its employees. And what does it have to do with Einstein’s famous equation E=mc² which encapsulates the concept that “energy can neither be created nor destroyed, it merely changes form”? Potentially nothing but conceptually the core concept of converting energy to work, inherent in the formula, can be applied to human productivity by understanding that effort (energy) is converted into output (work). You don’t agree? That works for me, too.
Workplace relations issues or other legal issues? – we are engaged and productive with a positive workplace culture.

Guulabaa
WHAT TO EXPECT AT GUULABAA – PLACE OF KOALA
Activities focus around The Hub, a series of architecturally designed decks that allow visitors to relax and enjoy the forest canopy views while also providing access to Guulabaa’s visitor experiences.
Families looking for a day out can enjoy a picnic or visit the Bunyah Café and meet the Big Koala, a 2.5m-high sculpture painted by Pauline Roods, part of the region’s Hello Koalas Sculpture Trail. There are comfortable bushwalks nearby where visitors might see one of the region’s koalas in its native habitat or book a visitor experience at Koala Conservation Wild Breeding Guulabaa. Here, visitors learn about these shy marsupials while viewing some of the resident koalas. They’ll also meet the carers who rehabilitate sick and injured koalas brought in for treatment.
For those seeking a more active experience, Wildnets Adventure Park offers Australia’s largest suspended playground. With rope- and net-based adventures scaled safely for the ages 3 and up, you can compete challenges, play in the treetops or ride a zipline.
Soon the Bunyah Bilbay Cultural Centre run by the Bunyah Local Aboriginal Land Council will also be opening, along with the Guulabaa Cathedral gathering space, both offering bookable function spaces too.
Guulabaa – Place of Koala on the NSW Mid North Coast is a special place. Set within Cowarra State Forest, Guulabaa, meaning ‘Place of Koala’ in the local Gathang language, offers a unique blend of conservation, cultural storytelling, and eco-tourism. Visitors experience elevated timber walkways, immersive educational spaces, and First Nations-led narratives that deepen understanding of wildlife, heritage and environmental stewardship – now recognised in Guulabaa’s latest international award win.
In ‘big news’ Guulabaa – Place of Koala has now been recognised as a global exemplar of conservation-led design, Indigenous collaboration and resilient land stewardship, winning an Urban Land Institute (ULI) 2025 Asia Pacific Award for Excellence in Hong Kong. The Urban Land Institute is a global organisation with a mission to shape the future of the built environment for transformative impact in communities worldwide. The Asia Pacific Branch’s Awards for Excellence are among the region’s most respected honours in real estate and urban development, celebrating projects that raise the bar for design quality, sustainability, and positive community impact.
Guulabaa is one of only twelve winners across the Asia Pacific, and one of just two from Australia to be recognised this year.
Guulabaa – Place of Koala was conceived in direct response to the catastrophic 2019–20 Black Summer bushfires, which impacted koala habitats across the region. Developed by the Forestry Corporation of NSW and designed by global architecture and design firm Gensler, the project is grounded in deep collaboration with First Nations communities, from integrating traditional cool burning practices to reduce bushfire risk and restore forest health, to
sharing of culture and language. This approach also enabled the use of local sustainably sourced native hardwoods in construction, setting a benchmark for ecologically responsible and culturally informed design.
“Guulabaa challenged us to rethink what regenerative architecture should be. It is not about making a bold statement, but about designing with care, deep listening, and respect for Country,” said Ken McBryde, design director at Gensler Australia. “This project shows what is possible when we listen to our client, stakeholders, project partners, and First Nations knowledge holders, and design with long-term
THE FUTURE IS ‘GUULABAA’
Guulabaa now serves as a flagship model for forestbased conservation infrastructure in Australia. It has inspired four additional forest tourism sites across NSW and demonstrates how design, Indigenous knowledge and environmental stewardship can come together to protect biodiversity, support sustainable tourism, and create places of lasting impact.

impact in mind. We are honoured that ULI has recognised that vision.”
Kathy Lyons, Senior Manager, Country & Community at Forestry Corporation, agrees.
“Guulabaa is about more than protecting koalas. It brings people together, across generations, cultures and disciplines to care for Country and build a shared future where nature and community thrive.”
“Its success is already inspiring similar projects across New South Wales, and this ULI award recognition affirms that this model is both powerful and scalable when approached with care and respect.”

EDUCATION UPDATE
with CATH EICHMANN
REGIONAL ASSISTANT DIRECTOR, HASTINGS, DIOCESE OF LISMORE CATHOLIC SCHOOLS
Agrowing movement in education has focused on grounding teaching practices in cognitive science, an approach known as the Science of Learning. In a bold and innovative step, the Diocese of Lismore Catholic Schools Office has partnered with Southern Cross University to put this science into action in classrooms across its 46 schools. This collaboration aims to improve educational outcomes by integrating evidence-based strategies into teaching, with a particular emphasis on professional learning. It represents a significant investment in teacher development and the long-term success of students throughout the region.
The Science of Learning brings together insights from cognitive psychology, neuroscience, and educational research. Its goal is to better understand how students learn and remember information, solve problems, stay motivated, and how teachers can support these processes through effective instruction.
Some key principles of this field include:
• Explicit instruction – delivering content in clear, structured steps that build on prior knowledge.
• Spaced, retrieval, and interleaved practice –revisiting content over time, encouraging recall, and mixing topics to deepen understanding.
• Cognitive load management – designing lessons that avoid overwhelming learners. These are not just theoretical concepts; they’re backed by decades of rigorous research and have
THE
SCIENCE OF LEARNING AT THE HEART OF CATHOLIC SCHOOL CLASSROOMS
been shown to improve learning outcomes.
The Diocese of Lismore has made a strategic commitment to embed these principles in its teaching culture through a co-designed professional learning model with Southern Cross University. This initiative is about aligning daily practice with what we know about how learning works.
The partnership adopts a collaborative model in which researchers and educators work together to tailor strategies to the unique contexts of Catholic schools in the Diocese. The aim is to foster extraordinary learning environments— classrooms where high-quality instruction is the norm and every student can thrive.
Adam Kelly, Acting Principal at MacKillop College, has been on a two-year journey in implementing the art and science of learning.
“Staff professional development around cognitive load and its impact on learning, combined with explicit instruction that leads to a continual practice and retrieval cycle, has led to more refined and consistent practice across the College.
“The learning experiences of our students, whilst highly engaging, also offer consistency and predictability. This frees up elements of cognition, opening areas of the brain for new, rich information and retaining essential knowledge.
“The area of neuroscience is quite an exciting one, and when applied to teaching, opens a world of opportunity for growth for all our learners, both students and staff.”
At the heart of the initiative is the belief that
by investing in teachers—through coaching, training, and research-informed practice—the Diocese is creating a sustainable culture of improvement. Teachers involved in the project are already reporting increased clarity and confidence in their instruction.
Troy Baker, Principal, St Joseph’s Primary, Port Macquarie, is well into applying the Science of Learning at his school.
“Every day, students dive straight into two minutes of timed number facts practice at the start of each maths lesson, strengthening their recall of basic operations with a focus on both speed and accuracy.
“Teachers have introduced this routine as part of a whole-school focus on lifting academic performance.
“The school is seeing students grow in confidence and capability by making this a fun and achievable daily habit. It’s wonderful to see the pride students take in their own improvement each day.
“The focus on structured pedagogy and formative assessment has helped teachers make more informed decisions about how to support individual learners, especially those who may struggle with more traditional approaches.”
Rooted in the Science of Learning and driven by a deep respect for the teaching vocation, this initiative is reimagining how Catholic schools support both educators and students. It reflects a strong commitment to shaping education in a way that is grounded, rigorous, and faithful to Catholic values.

THE GUTS, GRIT AND GROUNDWORK OF REMARKABLE REGIONAL ENTREPRENEURS, INNOVATORS, LEADERS AND GAME CHANGERS.
Emma Bylsma is a dynamic and driven educator and leader who is an exemplar of lifelong learning to her students and community. She is passionate about the power of education to unlock and elevate potential. Balancing a blend of grit, bravery, integrity and honesty to lead from the front, Emma recently punctuated her commitment to continuous learning graduating from a Masters of Business Administration on the Glasshouse stage.
Emma Bylsma
You have been a part of the Executive Leadership team at St Columba Anglican School for the last 5.5 years as Head of Secondary and in 2023 became Deputy Principal. Can you share how your journey into education began? Was this always the dream? I genuinely love teaching, I love that every day is varied and I get to make a difference in the lives of others. I began my teaching career back in 1995, graduating from USyd with a Bachelor of Education in Secondary Science. I was just 21 years old when I started teaching in the Mount Druitt district, so young! On my first teaching practicum, I just knew that this was the career for me. Fast forward 30 years and I am Deputy at an innovative, future-focused school that has a wonderful sense of community. Emma, in May you graduated from your third degree with a Masters of Business Administration - Charles Sturt University ceremony at the Glasshouse. Can you share the feeling as you crossed the stage in your home town? It was wonderful to graduate in the town where I live and work, surrounded by family and professional connections. Over the two days of graduation events, six SCAS Alumni achieved personal success. On stage at my celebration sat both current and past parents and Indigenous Elders from the community. In the audience sat
members of the Charles Sturt community who provided support to both myself and so many other students. Most importantly my family was present. I felt a deep sense of connection. It meant more than I ever expected. Are there any moments during this journey that stand out as a pivotal moment – to push forward or turn back? I never set-out to become a leader, nor did I have a defined career path that I wanted to follow, indeed does anyone? The biggest lesson that I have learnt over the last 10 years of my leadership journey, is that you need to take responsibility for developing yourself. Being flexible, brave and a willingness to step up to the unexpected opportunities has allowed me to experience a range of leadership roles. The continuous learning provided by stepping out of your ‘comfort zone’ is essential for leaders, especially in today’s complex and changing world. Leaving Orange was very hard at the time but moving to Port has been instrumental in furthering my career.
What has been your greatest achievement in your leadership journey so far? Conversely, what was your greatest challenge? My greatest achievement has also been my greatest challenge - balancing highlevel professional responsibilities, completing my Master’s in Business Administration, and raising a family of four. It required unwavering commitment, high levels of organisation and grit, together with huge amounts of discipline.
DEPUTY PRINCIPAL - ST COLUMBA ANGLICAN SCHOOL
I learnt that there is no such thing as work-life balance, just plenty of ‘strategic close enoughs’ and ‘intentional trade offs’. Parent guilt is always present.
What has been your most effective tool or attribute as a leader? How has this helped you make an impact? At the heart of leadership is relationships and my relationship focus is a key asset; if you cannot connect with people, you cannot lead them and investing in these relationships will pay huge dividends when it is time to promote change. Mobilising leadership expertise at all levels in a business requires high levels of trust, transparency and mutual respect. In my tenure as both Deputy and Head of Secondary School, I have established strong partnerships with students and families and it has honestly been one of my greatest joys. Students know that I see them, know them, and care for them, and that drives a learning environment based on trust and connection.
What has been the most surprising element of your role? The complexities of having difficult conversations, especially given the close relationships I’ve built within the school community. However, if these conversations are done with integrity, authenticity and emotional intelligence, they can actually strengthen trust, respect and foster a more resilient team culture. How instrumental have sages and critics
In
been in the evolution of your leadership journey? What is the most valuable lesson they taught you? As you would expect, I have had some very challenging experiences along my leadership journey, but I have also been mentored by some incredible people. Sages and critics have shaped my leadership by helping me hold fast to my north star, my purpose and moral compass, even when the path gets noisy or uncertain. The good and bad experiences have taught me not to trade integrity for convenience, and to stay grounded in the kind of culture I want to build, one where values align. And if your values don’t align with the culture of the organisation, don’t be afraid to walk away, staying true to yourself is more important than staying somewhere you don’t belong. Equally important, the lessons have reminded me not to be intimidated, especially as a female leader; to use my voice, clearly and confidently, even when it feels uncomfortable. You are an exemplar of lifelong learning and are a passionate of advocate for regional education at primary, secondary and tertiary level. Why is this so important to you and our community? Regional
my tenure as both Deputy and Head of Secondary School, I have established strong partnerships with students and families and it has honestly been one of my greatest joys.
education is more than just access to schooling, it’s the foundation of thriving, resilient communities. When our students learn here and then work here, they’re not just building careers, they’re contributing to the long-term sustainability of our towns, schools, health services, and local industries. Having lived and worked in regional communities for the past 18 years, and as a proud 2025 Charles Sturt University alumnus, I’ve seen firsthand how education can transform lives. It empowers individuals, retains talent in the region, and ensures our communities remain strong, connected, and capable of facing future challenges. Supporting education at all levels means investing in people, and when we do that locally, I strongly believe the entire community benefits.
What are you most excited about in the next leg of your journey? The next chapter for SCAS - the potential of introducing the International Baccalaureate (IB), continuing to work with staff to strengthen our Deep Learning Teaching and Learning Framework, as well as spending more time outdoors.
Thanks Emma.
TWe are excited to announce that St Columba Anglican School is a candidate school for the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme.
he IB Diploma Programme is a future-ready pathway of study for students in Year 11 and 12, that builds students’ inquiring mindsets, fosters their desire to learn, prepares them to excel at university (and beyond) and lead meaningful lives.
The IB Diploma Programme (DP) at a glance
• The DP is a challenging, balanced and inter nationally recognised educational programme for Years 11 and 12. Students may choose to study the HSC, or the DP.
• Students study Core components, plus six courses. The DP Core includes: Theory of Knowledge, Extended Essay, and Creativity, Activity, Service.
Courses include:
• Studies in Language and Literature (English) and Language Acquisition (French)
• Study of Individuals and Societies (e.g. Business Studies, Psychology) and The Arts (e.g. Theatre, Visual Arts)
• Mathematics and Sciences (a range of courses to accommodate different interests and abilities)
The IB Diploma Programme represents
a natural evolution of St Columba’s commitment to academic excellence and purposeful learning. Offering an internationally recognised pathway that develops critical thinking, global awareness, and service-minded leadership qualities, the IB aligns perfectly with our vision of preparing young adults to have lives of purpose and engagement.
The positive findings extended to IBDP students in regional areas, who also did better than other regional students in their university aspirations and outcomes... the IBDP certainly seems to be benefiting those who choose a university pathway.
—
Kylie Hillman, ACER Researcher
As we are currently a candidate school, we hope to move through an authorisation process over the next year to become an IB World School, ready to offer the Diploma Programme to Year 11 in 2027.
St Columba would be the first school to offer the IB on the Mid-North Coast. Why do families choose IB?
• IB students have consistently higher university enrolment, persistence in their degree, and completion rates, compared to their peers (ACER, 2024)
• National and inter national research continues to show the IB gives students the skills to be successful at university
• Study in the DP develops transferable skills which help students succeed in university, such as critical and creative thinking, problem solving and communication
• The IB is recognised both nationally and internationally
• Study of a second language allows students to engage with other cultures, or alternatively, engage more closely with their own family’s culture
• Inter national perspective and cultural awareness
• Emphasis on personal growth and community service
• Prepares students to contribute to both their local, and the global community
BENOY CLASS OF 2023
Benoy’s journey from SCAS to studying in The Hague, Netherlands highlights the challenges of pursuing an international education for regional students. This is why he believes the IB Diploma Programme potentially coming to SCAS in 2027 will open important new doors.

LUMINOSITY 2025 IMAGINE AND IGNITE
Emma Carey
KEYNOTE SPEAKER
Emma Carey is a writer, artist, speaker and entrepreneur. A er following her love for travel and adventure around the world, she found herself in Switzerland where an unexpected near-death experience completely altered her life.
She defied all odds by surviving a skydiving accident that broke her spine and left her a paraplegic. She defied them once more by learning to walk again after doctors told her she wouldn’t. Following the turbulence and transformation of her accident, she has been on a mission to share her unique story in hopes to inspire and enhance the lives of those around her. She has amassed over 190,000 Instagram followers and is now a famed author with her published memoir ‘The Girl Who Fell From The Sky’. Hi Emma. Your journey is nothing short of remarkable and your passion and commitment to life will see you grace this year’s Luminosity stage as a keynote speaker to inspire the next generation of young people to follow their pursuits. Can you share with us a little about yourself and your unique journey that has played a pivotal role in your life.
Thank you. I live a relatively normal life, although I experienced something quite out of the ordinary when I was younger, which very much shaped the person I am today. When I was 20 I was backpacking around Europe when I decided to go skydiving in Switzerland.
Unfortunately (and to my complete surprise, because I wasn’t even slightly nervous about the jump) my parachute didn’t open and I fell to the ground with my instructor who was strapped to my back landing on top of me. Instantly I couldn’t move or feel my legs and after being rushed to hospital and into surgery, I learnt I was now a paraplegic.
I am very fortunate that I somehow regained the ability to walk again, but as you can imagine, the whole experience taught me so much and woke me up to a lot of things I was oblivious to at 20.
my parachute didn’t open and I fell to the ground with my instructor who was strapped to my back landing on top of me. Instantly I couldn’t move or feel my legs...
This year’s Luminosity theme is entitled ‘Imagine and Ignite.’ What do you hope to bring to the 2025 summit and how do you plan to engage and inspire this year’s audience?
I hope I can help the audience to realise just how much they’re capable of. I know that sounds incredibly cheesy, but it’s true. I think
we can often view certain people as always having been resilient or strong or brave, because we’re used to seeing them out the other side, once the book has been written or the movie has been made. But if my story can teach anything, it’s that I was none of those things beforehand and my accident wasn’t always something ‘inspiring’ – these were all things I forged along the way. It’s amazing what we are capable of when we have no other choice. I hope I can encourage the audience to trust in themselves enough to know that the next time they’re faced with a challenge, they are capable of getting through it. Even if the direction isn’t obvious at all in the thick of the smoke.
What is it that has driven you to living a life of purpose and possibility when others may have shied away from the challenge?
I feel really fortunate that one of the main
takeaways from my accident was an immense feeling of gratitude. This might sound strange but personally I believe one of the reasons I was able to continue to see the world through a grateful lens after the accident, is because I can remember it so vividly. I was somehow never knocked unconscious during the fall or once I hit the ground, so I can remember the whole thing perfectly. Even though at the time this was a pretty traumatic thing to be wide awake for and not the best memory to have, in hindsight I’m really thankful that I can remember it. Because it means I will forever live the knowledge of how it feels to think for certain that I’m about to die. I can remember the fear so clearly, but even more than that, I can remember the strength of my desire to survive, and I remember thinking ‘what a waste to realise how much I want to live, when I only have ten seconds left’. So even though things were really hard for a really long time, I was able to maintain a sense of gratitude for feeling anything at all, good or bad, beautiful or devastating, because I knew just how close I came to not feeling at all. Possibility is endless if we are still alive.
You have taken your journey and penned your first publication to inspire and
enhance those around you through your experience. How did you find the writing process and the overwhelming support you have received since its release?
I have always loved writing and always had a dream of writing a book (I just never imagined it would be about my own life haha), so I really enjoyed the writing process. I wrote my book about eight years after my accident, so although I can remember it all quite clearly, some of the smaller details and specific emotions had faded over time. But fortunately for me, I have kept a diary for as long as I can remember, so when it came to writing about experiences that happened years prior, I was able to re-read my old journal entries to remind myself of little things I may have otherwise forgotten.
I have been blown away by the support my book has received - I can’t really fathom it. It means so much to know that an experience I once never imagined could be anything other than awful, could turn into something impactful not only to myself but to others. It’s quite remarkable what a little time can do.
As an entrepreneur, what has been your most valuable attribute to bringing your journey and vision to life and making a difference to others?
I think honesty and vulnerability. When I first
started sharing my story years ago, I made a very conscious decision that I would not only share the good, but also the bad and the very real. I’ve come to learn that as humans we all experience the same emotions, just through different circumstances and experiences. So even when there were times I would share something that I thought ‘surely no one else will relate to this experience or feeling’, I was surprised to learn that somebody always could. I think through being honest about all of the very human emotions we experience, it allows others to feel brave enough to feel them too and to remind us that we are never alone, even in the times it feels like we certainly are. For people interested in connecting with you Em, how can they best reach out?
Firstly, thank you! You can find me mainly on instagram at @em_carey or via email at emma@emcarey.com
Thanks Emma.

When did you first pick up a guitar, and what drew you to blues rock music in particular?
I was only 4 when I first picked up a guitar.
I wouldn’t have believed it if someone had told my 6 year old self that I would be playing with Ray in a few short years. I’m so grateful for his generosity.
My dad Pete started me off and showed me a lot of basic things. I had a guitar teacher for a while, but I am mostly self taught. I was drawn to blues rock music because my dad loves the style and showed it to me at a young age. I listen to all the guys that my dad listened to, but I also take my influence from modern players such as Joe Bonamassa, Eric Johanson, Tyler Bryant, and Marcus King to create my own sound.
You joined Autumn Blue at just 12 years old and learned their full setlist in five weeks! How did that come about, and how did that experience help you grow as a musician?
The bass player, Paul Haste, was my kindergarten teacher! We bumped into each other and he asked if I was still playing guitar.
I came and sat in at one of their gigs, where I was supposed to play 5 songs but I stayed up for the whole set. Their guitarist at the time couldn’t commit to the band, so they asked me if I would like to join Autumn Blue. From there I learned all of their songs and travelled to the Tamworth Country Music Festival with them. You really learn so much as a performer being in a band. I wouldn’t be the guitar player or person I am without Autumn Blue.
Brooke Lamb, Nigel Sonter, and Paul Haste have been so supportive and I couldn’t have asked for a better group of people to be around. They are some of my favourite people in the world. Music brings people together.

ARCHIE GERONIMI
over the next few years? Are there any big dreams you're chasing?
Towards the end of this year I am putting a blues/ rock power trio together where I will be singing and playing guitar. The trio would be a side project for when Autumn Blue isn’t playing a gig.
A dream for the future is to get on to the Byron Bay Bluesfest stage. It would be incredible to play on a stage where I have watched so many of my guitar idols. My ultimate dream is to play on stage with artists like Joe Bonamassa, Joanne Shaw Taylor and Eric Johanson.
Where can we follow your journey or listen to your music?
I’m on facebook @Archie Geronimi and Instagram @archiegeronimi, and you can listen to Autumn Blue on all streaming services! Thanks Archie.

Design De ned
with LEANNE WEBBER COASTAL INTERIOR GROUP
As someone who spends her days walking through new homes, collaborating on plans, and obsessing over finishes, I can confidently say one thing: timber, and the look of timber, isn’t going anywhere. It’s not just a design trend; it’s a design foundation. Whether it’s the warmth of natural grain or the clean architectural lines of a vertical timber screen, timber continues to bring character and depth to modern builds. And the good news? You don’t need a forest’s worth of hardwood or a sky-high budget to enjoy it.
Let’s start outside. Timber has always added visual softness and warmth to facades, but in recent years, we’ve seen a real evolution in how it's used. Think vertical screening, feature batons, eaves, garage doors, and even fencing, all giving homes that refined yet relaxed look that’s so sought after, especially in coastal or bushland settings.
But here's the game-changer: timber-look aluminium. This innovation has completely transformed what’s possible in low-maintenance exterior design. Gone are the days of regular oiling, fading, or warping. Today’s aluminium timber alternatives offer incredibly realistic textures and tones, from warm coastal oaks to rich blackbutt and walnuts, without any of the upkeep. They’re robust, weather-resistant, and best of all, they’ll last a lifetime. For coastal homes in particular, where harsh sun and salty air can be brutal on traditional timber, these

materials are a no-brainer. We’re also seeing timber used in more architectural ways. Screening that once served as a privacy solution now doubles as an eyecatching design statement. Garage doors clad in timber battens or aluminium alternatives offer a seamless, integrated look that’s both bold and welcoming. Railings, louvres, pergolas, and vertical posts, timber-look finishes are popping up in all the right places. The effect? A home that feels curated, textural, and deeply connected to nature.
Inside the home, the timber story continues. But here too, innovation is our best friend. You no longer need to go to the time and expense of custom-laid hardwood floors to get a rich, character-filled look underfoot. We now have access to a stunning array of timber-look flooring options, from vinyl planks to hybrid floors and even high-quality laminates that can mimic everything from natural Blackbutt to elegant oaks. These options are not only budgetfriendly, they’re also incredibly durable and family-friendly, making them perfect for busy households.
For those chasing the look and feel of real timber without the unpredictability of raw materials, engineered timber flooring is a beautiful solution. Yes, it sits at a slightly higher price point, but it gives you a precise, pre-finished result—no surprises, just beautiful consistency across every plank. It’s perfect for homeowners
who want the authenticity of real wood grain but with modern practicality built in.
The real beauty of timber in design, whether real or replicated, is its timelessness. While design trends come and go, timber transcends style cycles. It works equally well in a contemporary architectural build as it does in a more traditional or rustic home. It softens minimalism, elevates coastal and Scandinavian aesthetics, and brings a tactile, organic feel that instantly makes a space feel more grounded and welcoming.
In a world where new builds can sometimes feel cold or impersonal, timber and timber-look finishes offer warmth, longevity, and soul. So whether you're designing your forever home or just refreshing your façade, don’t underestimate the power of timber to create impact.
And with today’s incredible range of lowmaintenance, long-lasting options, it’s easier than ever to incorporate this timeless material in clever, cost-effective ways.
If you’re feeling inspired but unsure how to bring these timber ideas into your own project, I’d love to help. At Coastal Interior Group, we work closely with clients across all stages of new builds and renovations—offering expert guidance on finishes, materials, and cohesive design solutions. Whether you’re after advice, mood boards, or hands-on project involvement, get in touch— we’ll help you bring your vision to life, beautifully and practically. New builds don’t have to lack character, and timber is proof of that.

My parents started Beatties after they ‘retired’ to the coast from their sheep and wheat farm in Parkes, NSW. They spent about six months looking for the perfect coastal town, eventually settling in Nambucca Heads. As the quiet of retirement began to lose its charm, their passion for quality furniture inspired them to start Beatties. My parents retired again to Sapphire Beach and I have had the privilege of running the business for the past 17 years.

The designs have evolved too, with everything from timeless favourites to sleek, modern styles –all available in a great mix of fabrics and leathers.
