MOTHER’S DAY CLASSIC

Kylie Carmen and

Focus sat down with key volunteer organisers Carmen Abi-Saab and Kylie Bulmer to highlight the amazing accolades this proactive organisation has achieved over the last decade and its plans for future funding for breast and ovarian cancer research.

Hi ladies, thank you both so much for your time and congratulations to everyone involved in the powerful Mother’s Day Classic organisation. The annual event turns eleven this Mother’s Day. Firstly, can you share with our readers a little about the origins of the event and the organisation and how it positively contributes to supporting breast and ovarian cancer research.

Carmen: Thanks Sarah. Yes, we’re turning 11! It comes around so quickly each year, and it definitely sneaks up on us, especially considering it’s something we do outside of our work, and

we’ve already raced through April and into May! The Mother’s Day Classic was brought to Port Macquarie by Kylie who had a vested interest in cause-driven events and recognised the community impact something like this could have locally. So I’ll hand this one over to Kylie.

Kylie: The Mother's Day Classic was an event created in Melbourne 1998 and spearheaded by two incredible women Mavis and Louise who planted the seed through Women in Super. At the time, Industry Superannuation firms were noticing that breast cancer was one of the common reasons for accessing death and disability benefits.

Creating an inspiring event to raise critical funds

for breast cancer research was the perfect way to advocate for women’s health and so the Mother’s Day Classic was born! 27 years later, and now over 85 events are held Australia wide each year! I was reading a magazine at that time when I saw an ad calling for volunteers to establish a Mother’s Day Classic in their local area, so I put my hand up. This year is our 11th year here in Port Macquarie, and we believe the event has become an inspiring, positive and community-driven tradition that helps to raise not only the vital funds needed to support research, but also to raise awareness and show support to those in our local community who may be suffering.

Historically the focus has been solely on

The annual Mother’s Day Classic initiative celebrates its eleventh year in Port Macquarie this Mother’s Day. This amazing event is Australia’s most inspirational, cause-driven community movement uniting and inspiring locals to start their Mother’s Day with purpose.

breast cancer research via the National Breast Cancer Foundation but in 2024, the Mothers Day Classic organisation extended its support to include ovarian cancer research by also supporting the Ovarian Cancer Research Foundation. Why was this an important attribute for the organisation and what positive differences have you seen since including ovarian cancer research funding into the mix?

Kylie: The Mother's Day Classic has had many successful years in raising funds for the National Breast Cancer Foundation – $46 million to be exact! This has helped dramatically in increasing the 5-year survival rate of those diagnosed with breast cancer from 84 to 92 per cent.

With the inclusion of raising funds for the Ovarian Cancer Research Foundation, we aim to help boost more awareness and funds for research, so we can start to see the positive impacts like the improvements that have been made in detecting and treating breast cancer over the years. Currently the survival rates for those diagnosed with ovarian cancer is just 49%. Funding research is so vital.

Carmen: Twelve people die every day from breast or ovarian cancer in Australia. One of my closest and longest friends Cath was one of them. She passed away only 10 months after she was diagnosed with ovarian cancer in 2022. It was devastating for her, and for us as her family and friends. With the Mother’s Day Classic now also supporting ovarian cancer, it makes it even more significant for me.

We have such a long way to go with ovarian cancer as too often women are not diagnosed until the late stages of the disease, leaving treatment options and outcomes limited.

Tragically, treatment advances in ovarian cancer have been lacking, and treatment approaches have barely changed in 30 years. There still remains no early detection test!

of this year’s ambassadors and perhaps a snippet of their stories?

Carmen: Our ambassadors are truly amazing. People literally putting themselves on the line and in the spotlight to share what is a very personal and challenging experience in the hope of educating others, helping to raise awareness and vital funds for research.

Each have their own unique experience of how they first learned they had breast cancer, or how their mums or grandmothers were diagnosed with breast cancer, their very different treatment experiences and varied outcomes.

Thanks to events like the Mother’s Day Classic we can help improve these outcomes. Last year’s events across the country raised $2.1 million for breast cancer research, AND excitedly $1.2 million for the Ovarian Cancer Research Foundation, so we’re excited to see how much more can be directed to ovarian cancer research this year. Participants can choose to fund breast cancer, ovarian cancer, or both.

The MDC event is truly a uniting venture bringing our region together in support and solidarity. There are a number of brand ambassadors, supporters, partners and sponsors involved, each individually and collectively contributing to make this event stronger each year. Can you share some

In the last 10 years, we’ve had many local women share their story of being diagnosed with breast cancer, and for some, they’ve been diagnosed twice. People like Jess Higgins, Nicole Banks, Rheannon Chapman, Karen Lamond, Bron Watson, Jessica Fussell, Cass Catsoulis on behalf of her mum, and Irene Mifsud to name just a few. These are all very strong, community focused women and we’re very lucky to have them linked with our local event. Not to mention Tracy Stone and Magalie Lameloise from Port Macquarie Pink Girls, a breast cancer support group who have also shared their stories and help fundraise for the Mid North Coast Cancer Institute at the same time. Each have their own unique experience of how they first learned they had breast cancer, or how their mums or grandmothers were diagnosed with breast cancer, their very different treatment experiences and varied outcomes. These women continue to be ambassadors for our eventwhether overtly, or by providing support behind the scenes.

This year, we’re privileged to have two more local women share their experience after being diagnosed with ovarian cancer, in the hope they can help others – Tracey Deane and Michelle Ashby. Tracey and Michelle are sharing their experiences to raise awareness for the benefit of others and the importance of knowing your bodies and paying attention to little known symptoms. Continued over...

Kylie Carmen and

Across the past eleven years, there have been some significant achievements made by the annual Mother’s Day Classic event. What stands out to each of you as being personal highlights since your involvement with the organisation?

Kylie: The inclusion of raising additional funds to donate to our local Mid North Coast Cancer Institute has been a major highlight. From providing new books to their library, buying

new smart tablets and headphones for patients to use while they’re at the clinic, a new cold cap scalp cooling attachment and refurbishment of some of their patient wellbeing rooms and entrance gardens. It’s nice to see we have made some difference at a local level as well as being able to donate to the national research foundations.

Carmen: Kylie and I are the engines behind the machine locally, but this event is more than just us. Like Kylie said, we have several local businesses who call us year after year saying “we’re in again” even before Kylie and I have packed down our Christmas trees! From our returning sponsors like Naomi and the team from HEM Property and our other local event sponsors Sovereign Hills Port Macquarie, Growers Market and Macquarie Signs, local businesses who help us deliver the on-the-day event like Coastal Track and Trail Runners who do all of our run timing, Rachel and Suzie who have fun with our event warm up routines, Tracy and Magalie who are members of local breast cancer support group Port Macquarie Pink Girls, and Amy and Leah, AJ from Party Professionals and of course our loyal families and friends who also help where they can.

I read an amazing quote recently from a previous ambassador, Vivienne who said, “I’m alive today, to be a mother, a partner, an aunty, a sister, a daughter because of how advanced the medical support for breast cancer has been. Without the vital support of the Mother’s Day Classic movement, there would be no research, there would be no treatment, there would be no hope of living.” This is such a powerful statement. Can you tell us how funding helps to save lives touched by cancer?

When we’re talking about ovarian cancer, around 20 women on the Mid North Coast are expected to be diagnosed with ovarian cancer this year. That’s our mums, sisters, daughters, aunts, friends and work colleagues.

Kylie: One in seven Australians will be diagnosed with breast cancer in their lifetime. And, when we’re talking about ovarian cancer, around 20 women on the Mid North Coast are expected to be diagnosed with ovarian cancer this year. That’s our mums, sisters, daughters, aunts, friends and work colleagues.

Funds raised by the Mother's Day Classic

(MDC) are donated to progress specific research projects into prevention, early detection, and treatment options for those diagnosed with breast and ovarian cancer. Ultimately saving people’s lives.

Carmen: Sadly, it’s true. We need to fund research, but we’re also raising awareness at the same time. Organisations like the National Breast Cancer Foundation and the Ovarian Cancer Research Foundation receive little to no federal funding. It’s through events like ours, that raise the funds for these organisations to undertake research to make progress.

The Ovarian Cancer Research Foundation recently announced the recipients of their 2025 research grants program with two of those research projects being the firstever supported by the Mother’s Day Classic Foundation’s $1.2 million contribution from last year’s MDC events. The grants are focused on research that will improve treatment solutions to improve the quality of life and survival of women who have received an ovarian cancer diagnosis, including rarer sub-types.

Thanks to commitment and research, the relative five-year survival rate for breast cancer has increased from 84 per cent to 92 per cent. Comparatively increases in survival rates of ovarian cancer have remained relatively unchanged over the past 30 years with just 49% survival rate and still no early detection testing available. What more needs to be done to encourage regular testing, GP visits and educate women to be in touch with any changes in their bodies etc?

Kylie: Awareness and conversation! Our event focuses on not only raising the funds for cancer research, but also for creating that local connection. We are often reminded on the day through the bravery of our ambassadors who speak at the event and share their story, to just trust yourself and your instincts. You know yourself and your body better than anyone! We hope that by creating a supportive, caring and inspired event, we can increase the awareness and education in our local community.

Carmen: All too often, we put signs and

symptoms to the side. We might have a little niggle somewhere in our body, but we ignore it, and we continue without addressing it. Or, we get complacent and don’t do regular checks – be that breast checks at home, booking screening appointments, or going to talk to a doctor about differences that you may have noticed in your body.

This year’s event is scheduled for Mother’s Day on Sunday, May 11th. What’s in store for the day?

Carmen: Well for us, it’s a very early start before the sun even rises! We’re there, setting up marquees in the pre-dawn, with the help of family, friends and some very generous volunteers who come down to help us.

It’s a fun morning of music, entertainment for the kids including face painting, colouring in and other activities, we have a memorable warm up dance fitness where two awesome local women – Rachel from Miss Motivator, and Suzanne from Shape up w Suzie collaborate to bring us a fun routine that gets the crowd pumping.

fundraisers, and largest teams. We’ve even got a prize for the best dressed pooch on the day! Come along and grab a bacon and egg brekky roll, or sausage sandwich and a hot coffee, and make a difference to those diagnosed with breast and ovarian cancer.

For people who want to get involved in the organisation or donate directly, how can they best do this?

Kylie: There are so many ways to get involved. We would love people to register to walk or run, that’s the first step, but most importantly we encourage everyone participating to set up their fundraising and encourage their connections to sponsor their walk or run. Registration fees go toward the administrative and operational costs of hosting our events; it’s participant fundraising and our other event day activities that actually raise funds for our beneficiaries.

You know yourself and your body better than anyone! We hope that by creating a supportive, caring and inspired event, we can increase the awareness and education in our local community.

There are some sombre moments too. Listening to local speakers and ambassadors share their personal experiences, hearing the words “you’ve got cancer” or when reading the messages that are pinned on our Tribute Wall. But the event is all about connection and community, and, you don’t have to have a connection to breast or ovarian cancer to come along and take part. It’s just a great morning out, and a beautiful walk along the riverfront and foreshore at the same time.

Kylie: We encourage everyone to go that bit further with their outfits – whether it’s wearing pink or teal – the colours of breast and ovarian cancer, or even going all out with a themed costume to add a bit more fun. There’s prizes for best dressed individuals and teams, highest

Carmen: Last year, our local event raised over $50,000 through on the day fundraising activities, sponsorships and participant fundraising. We want to do even more this year. If 800 participants at our event each raised just $50, that alone could contribute $40,000 toward breast and ovarian cancer research. Imagine if each participant raised $100, we’d double our fundraising to $80,000!

If people can’t join us at the event, they could sponsor a friend or family member, or businesses could make a corporate donation to our Port Macquarie MDC fundraising. Businesses donating over $500 receive recognition as a Bronze Local Partner, or, volunteer! We always need volunteers. People can get in touch with us via our local Facebook page at www.facebook.com/port.mdc, or email LocalRep@MothersDayClassic.com.au.

Thank you ladies.

Stephen Keir V is a proud sixth-generation Master Ha er, carrying on the legacy of his founding forefathers and continuing the time-honoured traditions of hat-making passed down through 149 years of history. He leads both Production and New Product Development at the Akubra headquarters in Kempsey, where his unmatched knowledge and a ention to detail ensure the smooth and efficient flow of production while maintaining Akubra's high-quality standards.

MASTER HATTER - AKUBRA

i Stephen, you’re a sixth-generation Master Hatter. What does it mean to you personally to carry on the legacy of your forefathers?

It’s a very special feeling to be a part of such an amazing legacy that started almost 150 years ago. Although we sold the business at the end of 2023, it still is and very much feels like a family business. I still lean on my father for plenty of advice and even get him back into the workshop every now and again. Can you tell us about your earliest memories of Akubra and when you first knew you’d follow in the family footsteps?

My earliest memories of Akubra would have to be during my school holidays where I would spend most of my time in the workshop. Whether it was making

boxes or stamping linings, there was always the odd job for me to do. You currently lead both Production and New Product Development at Akubra. How do you strike the balance between honouring tradition and pushing innovation?

We very much honour tradition when it comes to the production and manufacturing process. There are many steps in making a hat and we have it very much nailed down to a solid process. Although the making of a hat is time consuming, minimising the work that goes into a hat would very much be a detriment to its quality. But, in product development, innovation is the key to success.

Whether it's keeping up with trends or designing something different, we need to stay relevant to continually attract new customers and keep our existing customers excited with new products.

Although the making of a hat is time consuming, minimising the work that goes into a hat would very much be a detriment to its quality.

Akubra hats are known for their quality, durability, and timeless style. What are some of the key steps in the hatmaking process that remain unchanged after all these years?

The manufacturing process has largely remained unchanged throughout the years.

The most critical part is the production of our hat bodies, ensuring this is done correctly means that the hat will stand the test of time. Continued over...

What does a day in the life look like for you at the Akubra headquarters in Kempsey?

I spend most of my days moving between the office and the workshop floor. While on the floor I’m checking hats to make sure they meet our quality standards, or otherwise I’m working with our incredibly knowledgeable supervisors and staff to troubleshoot any issues we might have. Keeping an eye on general production is also key to make sure each department has enough hats and the right mix to flow into the next department efficiently.

The Akubra brand is synonymous with Australian identity. How do you see its role evolving in today’s fashion landscape?

Akubra originally started as a fashion

hat brand, making mostly fedora type hats. It had shifted into the typical country Australian hat, which most people now know it as, but it’s now taking a turn to suit the everyday Australian.

Whether it’s the avid traveller, weekend warrior or true bushman, we have hats to suit everyone. Our hats are definitely starting to pop up in areas we never thought we’d ever see. How important is it to you and your team to maintain local manufacturing in Australia—especially in a regional

community like Kempsey?

We pride ourselves on being one of the few manufacturing businesses in Australia, let alone one that has lasted almost 150 years.

Manufacturing is the heart of our business and not once has it even been considered to move overseas. We pride ourselves on being one of the few manufacturing businesses in Australia, let alone one that has lasted almost 150 years. We have plenty of thanks to give to the community of Kempsey for all the support over the past 50 years, without it we wouldn’t be here today.

Over the years, Akubra has been worn by everyone from stockmen to

MASTER HATTER - AKUBRA

prime ministers. Is there a moment in the brand’s history that you find particularly iconic?

I think the most memorable for me would have to be the Dalai Lama. We have plenty of celebrities and politicians that have worn our hats, but the Dalai Lama wearing his traditional robes and an Akubra was pretty iconic. What inspires you when developing new products?

I definitely look to the past for inspiration. I really like the old west style of hats, and they are coming back into fashion. So, if we’re able to modernise some older styles and target the right audience, I think we’re on the money. There are plenty of archived styles that with some fine tuning can turn into sellers.

We have plenty of celebrities and politicians that have worn our hats, but the Dalai Lama wearing his traditional robes and an Akubra was pre y iconic.

What’s something most people don’t realise about the craftsmanship behind an Akubra hat?

One hat will pass through 66 pairs of hands and take 8-10 weeks to make, and in that time it will go through over 160 steps before it's finished. Every

time I show someone through the workshop they’re amazed by the number of steps and hands involved. People really appreciate the work that goes into the hat once they get to see it.

Thanks Stephen.

As we get closer to our submission deadlines, the committee have been busy with final reports and stakeholder consultation.

Robert Dwyer speaks

A warm welcome goes to our recently elected state member for Port Macquarie, who has hit the ground running. Robert managed to squeeze us in for a quick meeting so that we could give him an update and ask for future assistance.

Good news: As you’d expect from a 20 year member of the Camden Haven SLSLC, Robert is a huge fan of the Ocean Pool project. While he loves our coastal lifestyle – its safety first and Robert appreciates the risks evident in beach swimming especially for kids and seniors. He also understands the value Ocean Pools add to local communities as a recreation facility and social hub.

Ecology and Biodiversity

Port Macquarie Hastings Council rely on the Biodiversity, Conservation and Science Group (BCS) of the NSW Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment to provide advice on the rezoning or permitted use proposal. To date, we have received push-back and In response to this, we engaged an expert Ecologist to complete significant Ecological and Biodiversity studies, with the latest concluding that:

• All HEV mapping/requirements were already assessed as part of the Ecological Impact Assessment (Niche, 2023) which concluded that there would be no significant impact on fauna/flora.

• After reviewing the objectives of C2 zoned land - from a biodiversity perspective, the project is not contrary to the ecological objectives of C2 zoned land.

• The HEV review demonstrates that HEV would not be impacted within the Development Footprint.

This will be a major part of our Council submissions planned for June / July.

Robert Dwyer, Fred OToole and Paul Adams.

Traffic & parking research

Always a point of interest, this was one of the key site selection criteria where Oxley Beach was rated favourably compared to many of the alternative locations. Accordingly, much time and effort has been taken with surveys to thoroughly analyse the precinct’s traffic patterns and parking usage.

• We completed a detailed traffic and parking survey in February 2025 to thoroughly analyse the precinct’s traffic patterns and parking usage.

• We are considering several options to supplement the existing parking, including the vacant and between Pacific Drive and the tennis courts and on the eastern side of Pacific Drive at the southern end of Oxley Beach.

• Traffic levels are below the volume needed for a pedestrian crossing on Pacific Drive, however, a pedestrian crossing will still be considered.

Recreation and Open Space Plan Update

This Council plan aims to provide the necessary framework to provide for sport and recreation facilities in the short to medium term including both upgrades and new facilities.

To be included within this plan requires a PMHC resolution, so maintaining communications with PMHC Councillors to keep them informed as reports come to hand is critical.

Next steps: Submission late June or July.

Council want your views

Council’s ‘Have your say’ web page, recently asked the community for feedback on ‘Places to Play’. See the: https://haveyoursay.pmhc.nsw.gov.au/draft-places-to-play-plan

CHRIS MERREL BLACKDOG INK

BlackDog Ink was born from a bit of fun between mates, and has organically grown into a fully-fledged, award-winning, screen printing and design company. With a focus on collaboration with other creatives and producing the highest quality prints, founder Chris Merrell says even a er 20 years he still gets a buzz when he li s the screen to see a design come to life.

Hi Chris, can you share how you started screen printing and when the idea to start BlackDog Ink came about?

BlackDog Ink began the way all the best ideas do - with a few mates, a backyard shed, and the need for a clean shirt to wear to the pub. What started as a bit of fun quickly turned into a full-blown passion project. Our first design, the ‘Psycho Clown,’ came to life one afternoon at the beachpad, fueled by loud music, and a few beers. We printed the first run ourselves and sticker-bombed the neighbourhood; some of those original slaps are still clinging on around Lighthouse Beach today.

At the time, I’d already been working in the industry for close to a decade. Straight out of high school, I started my screen printing career at Soft Edges Sportswear in Port Macquarie. It was a crash course in everything from garment

manufacturing to printing on fabric panels, swimwear, and even Olympic uniforms. That foundation gave me the skills, and the itch, to eventually build something of my own. What was the learning process like? You obviously have a great eye for detail, did you guys have a mentor when you were starting out?

When I first started, I had a two-week crash course with the outgoing printer, and after that - it was trial by fire. I was pretty much left to my own devices and had to figure things out as I went. I made plenty of mistakes (and plenty of mess), but that’s where the real learning happened.

Over the years, I’ve continued to hone my skills through hands-on experience, late-night problem-solving, and a whole lot of trial and error. The screen printing community has also played a huge role in my development. I’ve connected with printers from all over the world

I’m still learning every day. That’s part of what I love about this craft, it keeps you on your toes and there’s always something new to master.

- sharing tips, tricks, and the occasional printing disaster. That sense of community and shared knowledge has been invaluable, and honestly, I’m still learning every day. That’s part of what I love about this craft, it keeps you on your toes, and there’s always something new to master.

INK

CHRIS MERREL BLACKDOG

We never set out with a grand plan to build a business—it just grew organically from doing quality work, supporting our community, and constantly levelling up our skills.

How did the shift happen from backyard hobby to a fully-fledged screen printing and design company?

We never set out with a grand plan to build a business, it just grew organically from doing quality work, supporting our community, and constantly levelling up our skills. That DIY spirit stuck with us, but so did the drive to keep getting better at our craft. What started as a

backyard hobby slowly gained momentum. As things grew, so did we. We rebranded from Psycho Clown Ink to BlackDog Ink, named after Tiger-John - our black and tan Kelpie and silent business partner. He was a constant shadow in the shed, always watching, always underfoot, and became the heart, soul, and face of the new name. His legacy lived on first through Harley, and now through Loki

and Milly, our current four-legged supervisors, who keep the print shop energy high and the snacks under surveillance.

For years, we ran the business from our triple garage at home. But eventually, we well and truly outgrew the space. So we took the leap and moved into an industrial shed, invested in bigger gear, and added to the team. That’s when BlackDog Ink 2.0 was born.

You’ve always had a strong connection to the local music and art scene. Why was it important for you to support other creatives as part of your business journey?

One of my favourite quotes is from Albert Einstein - “Creativity is intelligence having fun” and that really sums up what we do.

Collaborating with other artists and creatives has always been a big part of what drives BlackDog Ink. It’s not just about printing shirts; it’s about building a space where creative ideas can come to life in new ways. We love being part of that process - translating someone’s artwork into a wearable, tangible form and helping it reach a wider audience. That connection to the creative world keeps us inspired, pushes us to keep learning, and makes the work feel meaningful. It’s how we stay grounded in what matters to us - good people, good art, and making cool stuff together.

Can you walk us through the screen printing process for those who may not know just how much artistry and skill is involved?

Screen printing’s a hands-on process with a few key steps. First, we prep the artwork and make a separate screen for each colour in the design. Then we push ink through those screens onto the fabric, one layer at a time, making sure everything lines up just right. Once the print’s done, it goes through a heat dryer to cure the ink and make it last. Simple in theory but there are a number of variables in the mix that keep us on our toes!

With so many trends and technologies popping up in printing, how do you balance the traditional craftsmanship with

constantly refining your skills and staying up to date?

We embrace innovation while maintaining a strong foundation in traditional screen printing techniques. We’ve got an automatic press to speed up production, we use alternative decoration methods when it makes sense, and we’re always experimenting and continually learning our craft. Experimenting with new inks and implementing ‘shop hacks’ to improve processes and production flow, allows us to offer a wider range of services and meet evolving client needs. Continuous learning and adaptation are key to staying at the forefront of the industry.

Our goal is to continue pushing the boundaries of what’s possible in screen printing, offering innovative solutions and maintaining the high standards our clients have come to expect.

from sticker bombing the streets to becoming an award-winning print shop, featured in industry publications and podcasts around the world. But at the core, it’s still about that same creative spark that got us started. We love the craft and still get a kick every time we lift the screen to reveal the final print.

What’s next for BlackDog Ink? Any dream collaborations or big goals on the horizon?

You’ve come a long way from sticker bombing Lighthouse Beach! How do you feel when you spot one of those original Psycho Clown tags still hanging on?

Seeing some of those old sticker slaps still hanging around town always puts a smile on my face. We’ve actually got one of the original ‘Psycho Clown’ prints framed and hanging in the print shop as a reminder of those early days. It’s a bit rough around the edges, but that’s the charm - it keeps us grounded and reminds us to stay true to our roots. We’ve come a long way since then,

We’re focused on expanding our services and exploring new collaborations with artists and businesses. Our goal is to continue pushing the boundaries of what’s possible in screen printing, offering innovative solutions and maintaining the high standards our clients have come to expect.

Where can we find more or get in touch?

You can learn more about what we do on our website at www.blackdogink.com.au. For the latest updates and behind-the-scenes content, follow us on Instagram at @blackdog_ink. We’re always open to new projects and collaborations, so feel free to reach out.

ArtWalk is returning to Port Macquarie this June – and it’s going to be out of this world! Set for Friday 6 June, the much-loved arts festival is back to light up the CBD with the main event launching a long weekend of creativity that continues across the Hastings with additional activities and the Hastings Arts Trail – a region-wide celebration of art, place and community. Now in its ninth year, ArtWalk has become one of the most anticipated events on the local calendar. This year’s theme, Out of This World, is your cue to let your imagination take flight. The streets will shimmer with celestialinspired projections, cosmic installations and performances that defy expectations - all created by local and visiting artists ready to transform our coastal town into something spectacular.

A crowd favourite this year is expected to be Stargate, an awe-inspiring installation arriving straight from Canberra’s Enlighten Festival. Measuring 4 metres wide and high, this glowing portal invites you to step into another dimension. Its circular centre acts as both a

meditative space and the ultimate selfie spot. Better still, Stargate will be staying in the CBD on Saturday night giving visitors and locals extra time to enjoy its magic.

Also new this year is the Youth Precinct in Phillips Lane – an energetic space co-created by The Cage, Headspace Port Macquarie and with planned involvement from Charles Sturt University’s First Nations team. Designed with young people at its heart, this precinct will feature music, street art, workshops and plenty of unexpected moments to inspire the next generation of creatives. With the help of Council’s Permit, Plug & Play infrastructure, this once underutilised laneway will become a creative wonderland pulsing with energy, connection and community pride.

While we can’t give too much away just yet, we’re also planning a brand-new interactive experience that’s unlike anything Port Macquarie has seen before. Keep an eye out for the June edition of Focus Magazine for the full reveal.

ArtWalk continues to grow each year, powered by the passion and imagination of our creative community. It’s a time to come together, to play, to be inspired - and to be

proud of what makes this place so special.

“We’re proud to see ArtWalk continue to grow into something truly unique for our region,” said Lucilla Marshall, Group Manager of Liveable Communities at Port Macquarie Hastings Council. “This year’s extended program, youth precinct, and theme will offer even more ways for people to connect, express themselves and experience the joy of creativity together.”

As always, ArtWalk is a community celebration - and that includes what you wear! Everyone is invited to embrace the theme, whether that’s dressing in starry sequins, metallics, or an interstellar creation of your own design. ArtWalk is the perfect excuse to shine bright, dress up and express yourself.

Whether you’re an artist, a visitor, a costume enthusiast or just curious, ArtWalk 2025 is your invitation to explore, discover, and get involved. Mark your calendar for Friday 6 June - and prepare for a weekend that’s set to be truly out of this world.

When Kay Thurston retired from her career as an educator and was looking for some ‘me time’ she found her artistic spark reignited, and began to create again. Her works are o en inspired by native flora and fauna, with intricate line work being a signature of hers. Her works are currently on display at the Cassegrain Winery.

ARTIST of the MONTH

Hi Kay, when would you say your journey into the world of art started? What was it that captured your imagination?

I was always a drawer from a very young age but it was when I was in high school that I really developed my love for art. I had the most wonderful art teacher who nurtured and encouraged me. My HSC artworks (botanical drawings featuring native fauna) were selected in the Art Express Exhibition.

You spent nearly four decades as an educator, mentor, and school principal. How did your career in education influence your creativity or your view of art?

My career was my great passion and along with family life pretty much consumed my life, so my own art practice sat simmering away in the background. As a primary school teacher, I loved teaching art and craft to my students. The joy it brought them was palpable. It also demonstrated the magical ability of the creative process in sparking children’s imagination, their confidence in being able to create their own unique pieces and the quiet calm that art can bring to sometimes anxious or little brainoverloaded minds.

I am fascinated by the incredible variety of leaves, seeds and flowers and the amazing pa erns and shapes when viewed up close.

After retiring and moving to Port Macquarie, you reignited your artistic spark. What was it that inspired you to pick up the pen and paintbrush again after so many years?

I have the wonderful Jane Whitfield from ‘Drawn to Art’ to thank for reigniting my spark. After retiring from such a

hectic career, I was very keen for ‘me’ time and to get back into my art but had lost a lot of my self-confidence in creating. Jane nurtured and inspired me to put myself out there, as well as encouraging me to work outside my comfort zone. Your artwork is often inspired by native flora and fauna, what draws you to nature as a subject, and do you have any favourite plants or creatures to draw? I love the sense of quiet calm that

nature provides. I am fascinated by the incredible variety of leaves, seeds and flowers and the amazing patterns and shapes when viewed up close. I particularly love Australian natives for their special uniqueness. I love how resilient they are in all kinds of climates. I love all animals! I am particularly drawn to those with detailed markings – bees, butterflies and dragonflies. A few years ago my husband created a beautiful fish pond in the garden and the koi and goldfish inspired me to create a few ‘fishy’ pieces.

Continued over...

Do you have a favourite medium, or does it depend on the mood or subject?

I have always loved to create artworks on paper using very fine-lined ink markers. This medium lends itself to the very detailed, intricate designs I love to add. Many of my works are created on either black or white, very textured paper using black and white fine liners. As an educator, my students were always encouraged to be lifelong learners and I like to reflect that in my art practice. I love to experiment and challenge myself with new mediums and techniques. The subject matter can lend itself to a particular medium, however I often like to work on a series of pieces using the same subject matter, but using a variety of mediums. I have created pieces using acrylics on canvas; alcohol inks on Yupo paper, ink, watercolours and recently I have been using washi paper to create mixed media botanical pieces. Regardless of the medium, I always need to add my fine lined details to every piece.

You’ve now exhibited across multiple galleries and even had your own solo show, what is that experience like? Do you have any upcoming exhibitions or events where we can see your work?

I have been incredibly lucky to have had these opportunities, particularly being an emerging artist. I’ve had to pinch myself at times and felt a bit of an imposter! Port Macquarie and surrounding towns have been very supportive and generous in allowing me to exhibit in beautiful galleries, shops and cafes. Currently my art is on exhibit at Cassegrain Winery until the end of May. I have a couple of other exhibits still in the pipeline for later this year. A few of my pieces are on display (and for sale) at the Propagation Station in North Haven. David has been extremely generous in allowing me a wall to myself that I regularly update. My works can be found on my Facebook and Instagram sites – Kay Thurston Art; they are also available for sale on my website Kay Thurston Art.

You have also generously donated your artwork to local charities. Why is giving back to the community an important part of your creative practice?

ARTIST of the MONTH

Giving back was something instilled in me as a child. My Dad volunteered for numerous local groups, including nearly 18 years as a volunteer with the police force. Throughout my career, giving back was just part of what teachers and principals did. From school working bees, Bunnings sausage sizzles, fun runs, visits to aged care and raising money with school communities for numerous charities, after school and weekends were always full of community events. Having lost my Mum at a young age to cancer, I have always been a very strong supporter of any cancer charities. I create art for my own joy and if a piece (or 5!) can help out a local charity, or bring a smile to a patient in a hospital ward, then that’s the least I can do.

Port Macquarie and surrounding towns have been very supportive and generous in allowing me to exhibit in beautiful galleries, shops and cafes.

What does your creative process look like, do you work from photos, memory, or just go where the pen takes you?

It can be wide and varied. I might spot a particular plant, leaf, flower on my morning

walk, take a few photos and get inspired. Other times I might just get an idea in my head and off I go (even in the very early hours of the morning!) The washi paper I have been using recently can lend itself to a particular thought/subject matter emerging with their richly detailed colours and patterns. There has been many a time when I’ve started a canvas piece with an idea in mind, but it ends up nothing like I originally thought. I will often stop a piece, leave it for a day or two, photograph it (and walk past it many times!)

before deciding what to add/ change – or go over the whole thing and start again! Where can we find out more, view your work, or get in touch?

My Facebook and Instagram sites – Kay Thurston Art for regular updates on what I’m creating. Pieces can be viewed and purchased via my website: https://www.kaythurston.art or pop on out to the beautiful Cassegrains Winery to view and purchase. Alternatively I am available for commissions – just email kaythurston.5@gmail.com

Thanks Kay.

THE WANDERING LENS MICHELE BURNS

From glaciers in Greenland to the deserts of Chile, landscape photographer Lisa Michele Burns captures the planet’s most striking textures and remote beauty with quiet reverence and creative precision. rough her popular platform e Wandering Lens, Lisa has built a thriving global community of photographers while continuing to document the ever-changing natural world. We caught up with Lisa to learn more about her journey, the power of perspective, and what inspires her to chase icy winds, glowing dunes, and everything in between.

FESDHOO ISLAND, MALDIVES
TORRES DEL PAINE NATIONAL PARK, PATAGONIA, CHILE

i Lisa, your portfolio is breathtaking - rich with icy glaciers, remote landscapes, and intimate patterns of nature. What first drew you to environmental photography?

Thank you so much! Those environmental wonders and remote landscapes are so thrilling to photograph, it’s more than just the final image or collection of shots. I love the experience of being there and feeling the icy winds or the extreme desert

You’ve mentioned that seeing your first iceberg in Greenland was a pivotal moment. Can you describe that experience and how it changed your creative focus?

heat. I was living on Hayman Island and owned a gallery and print lab there for just over five years. It was my time on the island with the Great Barrier Reef on my doorstep that allowed me to experiment with underwater photography and aerial photography, which led to my interest in geology and how natural environments are formed, how they’re shifting, and changing.

...to be amongst these massive floating icebergs in a tiny dinghy, hearing the thunderous crash as they calved and fell into the ocean felt overwhelming in the best possible way.

My first trip to Greenland was at the end of a four-month solo trip photographing regions of environmental significance for a print project. I’d been in the Atacama Desert of Chile beforehand, and to then land in Ilulissat, Greenland and see the icebergs from the air on descent, my eyes were the widest they’ve ever been. Those two weeks photographing the Icefjord and learning from both locals and visiting researchers and scientists about the glaciers, the Icefjord and its movements were so rewarding. I think growing up in Port Macquarie, glaciers felt like such a foreign landscape, so to be amongst these massive floating icebergs in a tiny dinghy, hearing the thunderous crash as they calved and fell into the ocean felt overwhelming in the best possible way.

MOUNT FITZROY, PATAGONIA, ARGENTINA
GREENLAND

The Wandering Lens is so much more than a blog - it’s a creative community. What inspired you to create it, and how has it evolved since 2015?

I was working freelance for various travel magazines at the time I created The Wandering Lens, and it began as a way to publish travel guides for photographers without needing the approval of an editor. I also loved the idea of writing something and hitting publish the same day. Blogs were popular at the time, so I built the site to share a mix of personal travel experiences and informative resources that photographers could follow for their own adventures. Over the years, the original format hasn’t shifted too much, it’s still the core of my business, however, the partnerships and brands I’ve worked with have. As the site has grown, the opportunities that come along still surprise me and I’m so grateful for the lightbulb that went off back in 2015 that saw me publish the first article!

One unexpected outcome from launching The Wandering Lens has been the community that’s formed via the readers. I love receiving emails from people who read the guides then visit a location I’ve recommended, or they’ll send through updates if a hiking trail I’ve mentioned

is now closed or even share photos from their trip.

You capture nature’s textures and quiet moments so beautifully, what are you looking for in a landscape when you raise your camera?

I tend to get a little lost in my own world when I’m photographing and I’ll look around for any kind of texture or shape I can include to help frame the landscape.

I really enjoy focusing on the details within a scene or landscape, things like patterns, shadows and colours are always what I’m scouting for. Usually I’ll photograph during golden hour, either early morning or afternoon when the light is a little more golden which adds warmer tones to the landscape. I tend to get a little lost in my own world when I’m photographing and I’ll look around for any kind of texture or shape I can include to help frame the landscape. Shooting with a wide aperture is something I love to do so it creates a pop of blurry colour within the image.

How does aerial photography change your perspective, both literally and artistically, on the landscapes you shoot?

An aerial vantage point completely transforms a landscape because you’re essentially looking down on a flat canvas. On the ground you’ve

got lumps and bumps or shapes and shadows as you look toward the horizon, but from above, it’s all flat and you’re instead working with colours, lines, and shapes to try and compose an image well. Unfortunately, I get incredibly airsick in tiny planes, so while it’s one of my favourite ways to photograph, I can usually only last about 30 minutes when doing aerial work. I was photographing Shark Bay in Western Australia once and the conditions were crystal clear, perfect for shooting. But the turbulence was wild, and with the back door of the little Cessna open so I could get a clear image, the wind was swirling everywhere. After just 24 minutes in the air, I gently asked the pilot if we could head back and land, it was quite the experience and luckily I got a few photos before feeling ill. Travel can be unpredictable - weather, wildlife, logistics, can you share one of the most unexpected or challenging moments you've faced while on assignment?

MONUMENT VALLEY, ARIZONA, USA
GREAT BEAR RAINFOREST, CANADA

PERITO MORENO GLACIER, ARGENTINA

I love the unpredictability of wild weather and the unexpected encounters of wildlife but I’d also call myself a pretty cautious adventurer. I definitely check weather forecasts (sometimes too much!), don’t venture too far off paths, and will always have a guide with me if there’s a chance of bears or lions! One of the most nerve-wracking experiences was in Canada’s Great Bear Rainforest. The local company I was photographing for were keen to explore a new area to see what bears were there, and we were slowly walking around the edge of the waterway and forest to see if any Grizzly or Brown Bears were visible. My heart rate was thumping like crazy the entire time, especially when we’d hear a rustle in the bushes! You’re also an educator and mentor through online courses and The Travel Photography Club, can you share a bit about that? What’s the most rewarding part of helping others grow creatively?

I was running photography workshops in places like Iceland and Japan for a few years prior to 2020 and when travel slowed down, I turned the education side of The Wandering Lens to the online realm so people could still access what I used to teach in the workshops. The first online course had such a great response and saw an amazing community of photographers begin to grow. Over the past five years I’ve

been adding more courses and resources in response to their requests; everything from how to sell prints, how to get published, photographing for hotels, or simply getting more creative when photographing.

RESERVE, SOUTH AFRICA

Last year I’d been toying with the idea of creating a membership and community to bring all the course students together with the readers of the travel guides, and it was actually a trip home to Port Macquarie that led to The Travel Photography Club recently launching. My beautiful Nan, Patricia White, was a member of the Port Macquarie U3A Photography Club, and when she passed away, I was lucky to meet some of the fellow club members at her memorial and it dawned on me that her adventures with the club and the sense of community and friendship they all had was so special. A week later I’d built the club’s website and was welcoming members, it was the nudge I needed to bring the idea to life.

One of the most nervewracking experiences was in Canada’s Great Bear Rainforest, the local company I was photographing for were keen to explore a new area to see what bears were there

All that to say, one of the most rewarding parts of teaching photography has been the community that’s developed. Since the club was launched a few months ago, there have been hundreds of members who have joined, and we’ve now got a global community of photographers from over 18 countries connecting over a shared love of exploring the world and capturing it creatively.

Where can we follow along on your adventures or get in touch?

I’m on Instagram via both @the_wanderinglens and @thetravelphotographyclub, or you’ll find my travel guides on thewanderinglens.com, and all the courses and club details at www. travelphotographycourses.com. It would be wonderful to connect with anyone who loves photography inside the club and I’m always happy to share more details or answer questions via email at hello@thewanderinglens.com

Hyourself to our readers and how you came to be the franchise manager of The Cheesecake shop. I grew up in Port Macquarie and the nearby town of Kempsey. After finishing school, I moved to New Zealand, where I spent 17 incredible years. That’s where I met my beautiful French wife, and together we now have a daughter. Even though I left the Mid North Coast, I always had a strong desire to return, especially after starting my own family and knowing we still had loved ones here. Back in New Zealand, I owned and operated several businesses, so when we moved back to Port Macquarie, I knew I wanted to start something of my own again. When I came across the opportunity to take on The Cheesecake Shop here, it just felt right. What better place to run a business, be creative, and raise a family?

I’ve always loved hospitality, connecting with people and being part of special celebrations. There’s something really rewarding about making cakes that become part of someone’s important moment, whether it’s a birthday, wedding, or just a sweet treat on a good day. This month you are celebrating the 1st birthday for The Cheesecake Shop Port Macquarie, tell us what has the last 12 months been like. Have there been any unexpected surprises? The last 12 months

Chris WOOD

have been a roller coaster. We opened with a bang - the first month was absolutely crazy! We weren’t expecting the overwhelming support from the local community. Even though we had everything well planned, we sold out within a few days and had to hustle to keep up. Things have since settled, and we’re now focused on growing the business further, collaborating with other local businesses, supporting community groups, and really becoming part of the fabric of Port Macquarie. Time has flown because we genuinely love what we do.

Do you remember what the first flavour cake was that you sold when you opened the doors, and what has been the most popular cake?

Yes! The first cake we sold was the Citron Glaze Cheesecake - it flew out the door. But the all-time crowd favourite has definitely been the Creamy Caramel Continental Cheesecake. Other top picks include the Black Forest, Lemon Meringue, and Wild Berry Baked Cheesecake. Take us through a day in shop, what do you get up to from open to close? Our baker kicks things off at 6am, and we usually open the doors shortly after. The morning is spent baking, followed by assembling and decorating cakes. We’re constantly creating - tortes, mudcakes, cheesecakes, cupcakes, cake pops - you name it. Every day is different, and that’s part of the fun, especially with the great team we have.

How many cheesecakes/cakes do you make in a week, which one is your favourite? It varies a lot - holidays, weather, and birthday rushes all play a part, but we make a lot of cakes each week! My personal go-to for any BBQ or family event is the Passionfruit Mango Baked Cheesecake. It’s always a hit.

Are there any seasonal or limited-time flavours you offer? Absolutely. We’re always open to trying new things. Customers often request unique flavours, and we sometimes create special recipes just for a limited run. Recently, we’ve even had lots of demand for quiches, which we’ve happily added to the mix. The season definitely influences choices - fruitier cakes or pavlovas in summer and denser cakes when its colder.

Tell us about your custom and special order cakes. Custom cakes are one of our favourite parts of the job. They let us be creative and show off what we can do. From wedding and birthday cakes to themed or vintage styles - we love taking a client’s idea and turning it into something unique and beautiful. The best moment is opening the cake box and seeing their face light up with a smile. That never gets old!

Thanks Chris and congratulations on the shop. We’re so grateful to be here, doing what we love, in a town we love. Here’s to the next slice of happiness!

Thanks Chris.

CakeBOX

How long have you been baking professionally? I’ve been baking professionally from a shop for more than 12 years now. But well over 20 years in general.

How long have you had Cake Box 2444 and what inspired you to open this store? My Mum (Michelle) had always been on my back, for what seems like forever, to open a shop front with cakes. But with life in general, kids and so on, the time wasn’t really right. After having a couple of café businesses, the time came for a change, and we opened Cake Box Boutique in 2016. Now with Mum retiring and taking a step back I've decided to stay on. But our regulars don’t need to worry, you'll still see Michelle from time to time popping in and out of the store. I’m very appreciative of everything Mum has done for me and without her persistence and encouragement, we wouldn’t be here today.

The business has had a slight change of name to enhance our

online presence, and we also launched a website, which my wonderful fiance Justin (Macca) has made for us. I couldn't do it without his love and support as well and he is the social media king, so I leave that to him. In time, you may see his face in store more often, if I can twist his arm!

Tell us about some of your best sellers? Our Decadent Cupcakes are a huge hit, or if you're in need of a cake, our Salted Caramel or Choc Tim Tam are always popular. There’s too many to choose from but we have something for everyone. Everything is also baked and decorated instore, so people know they are getting the best quality. Our motto is ‘Experience Cake Perfection’.

Where can our readers find you? We are located in Peachtree Walk Arcade - Shop 10, 78 Horton Street in Port Macquarie (down the Arcade from Optus and Pizza Hut). You can also find us on social media or www.cakebox2444.com.au.

Season IS HERE! rus

As the weather cools into winter its amazing, Mother Nature knows what we need, and she provides… Citrus! All the good stuff comes at this time of year, mandarins, grapefruit, lemons, limes, oranges and the list goes on.

Mandarins are what we always notice because they leave our shelves for the summer months, then come flooding back in from about April to October. We have such a fantastic array of mandarins. Imperial mandarins are probably the best known as the standard sweet, easy to peel and low seed count. They’re enjoyed by almost everyone. People often mistake seedless fruit as being genetically modified fruit. This is in fact not a sign of genetically modified fruit at all, it is the simple result of good cross-pollination, not genetic engineering. Almost every fruit and vegetable we eat has had some leave of cross-pollination or pollination refinement to produce the produce we enjoy today.

Afourer mandarins are another crowd favourite and a relatively new variety. Afourer mandarins are know for their deep orange skin, low seed count and are easy to peel with a very thin skin. They have become popular in Australia for a number of reasons but the big ones are they are more resistant to pests and their season is a very long one so the fruit is available for almost six months.

Honey Murcott mandarins are also very popular nowadays for very similar reasons but this is one of the last fruiting varieties in Australia, meaning they will be available right up to October and maybe after, depending on how quickly it heats

up again this year. Australian Navel oranges have returned to our shelves just recently, the supply is always a little patchy at the start and we might even switch back and forth between Valencia and Navel oranges for a couple of weeks as the season really gets going. Navel oranges are definitely my favourite with their sweet juicy flesh and distinct flavour when compared to the summer time Valencia oranges. Not to say Valencias aren’t enjoyable, but a Navel just can’t be beaten. In summertime the only way to get a Navel orange is to import one from the Northern hemisphere, and we pay for the privilege of course. But in winter, when they are being picked locally, don’t miss the opportunity to enjoy them and get all the vitamin C you possibly need.

Lemons and limes suffer in the same way through summer, where citrus just does not like the heat and unfortunately Australia has plenty in summer… We do get through summer with a steady supply most of the time but again we unfortunately have to pay for the privilege with limited supply from local suppliers and the cost of importing produce can be excessive. In winter however, this supply explodes, and prices crash. Class 2 lemons are expected to be just a few dollars per kilogram all through winter whereas in summer they can exceed ten dollars per kilogram. These class 2 lines are great if you’re looking for value for money and perfect for cooking and juicing, they also do our farmers a massive favour by helping them sell everything they grow.

And of course, grapefruit, both Ruby and Marsh grapefruit will come into abundance soon and the health benefits of these little beauties are extensive. Marsh or Yellow grapefruit is probably left for the experienced citrus fan with its strong and distinctive flavour, but the sweeter variety, Ruby or Red grapefruit is something that can be enjoyed in similar ways to other citrus from salads to juice. Ruby grapefruit still has a very strong flavour, but through selective pollination, we can enjoy a level of sweetness that really balances the strong flavour and makes the fruit far more widely enjoyed. Having said that, if you do have the taste for Marsh grapefruit there really isn’t anything else like it.

Then of course I will remind you that this is the brief time of the year that we will see a limited supply of Seville oranges, traditionally used for marmalade jam. These oranges are grown locally here in the Hastings and will be available for a fairly short period of time. So if you are in store and see them don’t hesitate or you could miss out for another year.

So whatever your preference of citrus is, make the most of it while it's here and load your body with all the vitamin C it needs to fight off illness through winter. Shop in season for maximum value and consider some Class 2 fruit as an economical option to nourish your body and save money at the same time.

We’ll see you soon at the top end of Gordon St, and get yourself a bargain!!!

Whilst absentmindedly paging through Stephanie Alexander’s culinary bible ‘The Cook’s Companion’ the other day it got me thinking about this thing we do called cooking. A pastime the vast majority of us will have to take up at some point in our lives –whether that be with curiosity and enthusiasm or with reluctance and the sheer necessity of having to feed oneself or others less able to feed themselves.

However we find ourselves standing in the kitchen, knife at the ready. Whether with the guidance of a recipe, the memory of helping our mother or just winging it and hoping for the best – cooking is so much more than a mundane task taken up to transform the chemical structures of food to make it more palatable for human consumption.

Deeply personal, bound up in traditions both cultural and familial – what we cook says more about who we are and where we come from than any other facet of our existence. It holds a mirror to our soul – after all we are what we eat. It reveals our truth about ourselves, how we respect our bodies and minds, how we nurture and comfort ourselves and our loved ones.

Whether we prefer to keep it simple and stick

to our limited repertoire of tried and tested dishes, or instead relish any excuse to conjure up elaborate multi course feasts it doesn’t matter.

Rather, what matters only is that hopefully we can all achieve a little joy in producing a meal – either making your kid’s favourite dinner, or having a pot of nourishing chicken broth simmering on the stove when you’re feeling under the weather, or basking in the glory of appreciation from your guests at that elaborate dinner party.

Stephanie Alexander in her Preface of The Cook’s Companion says “all have been worthwhile if this book encourages young people to cook and experienced cooks to enjoy cooking more”.

often the most magical of results comes from not doing anything remotely complicated in the kitchen but rather just choosing the most seasonal of fresh ingredients and merely giving them a few little tweaks in order to produce something wonderful.

It reveals our truth about ourselves, how we respect our bodies and minds, how we nurture and comfort ourselves and our loved ones.

In this way she imparts to the reader a respect for the ingredients themselves and this is a wonderful place to start when looking to enhance one’s love of cooking. Just like with anything, a little knowledge goes a long way and when you have a little understanding of precisely the best way to prepare your pomegranate, this in itself will assist with a higher quality of finished product.

This is really an aim for us all, and it can only be achieved via that curiosity of childhood or if not then, by that first little glow of success when something you’ve made actually turns out right, or someone tells you how much they’ve enjoyed what you cooked.

As Alexander pronounces through this book, (listed by Ingredients rather than recipes),

And yes, there’s no failsafe way to banish those ‘Monday night got to make the dinner blues’ that are still going to hit from time to time, but maybe you might be more inclined to get inspired to choose that splendid seasonal produce and a little bit of excitement might unfold from there.

If all else fails, there’s still a good time to be had from Taco Tuesday!

FRONT in the BAR

Let’s start with a bit of background – tell us about your roots and how life brought you to the Mid North Coast. I’ve always had a thing for entertaining people, whether it was doing magic tricks for show and tell at school or dragging my siblings in to watch my home made movies. I kicked off my radio journey in 2017 with Bathurst Broadcasters while juggling life as Head Prefect at Stannies. I picked up a few leadership awards along the way including the ADF Long Tan Leadership Award and Youth Citizen of the Year. From there, I bounced around the media world hosting drive shows, reporting the news, and even producing podcasts for Grant & Chezzi Denyer.

the moment the first alarm went off at 3am. Honestly, it’s hard not to be pumped when you’re starting your day chatting with the Mid North Coast. I love every bit of it. Between Anthony Maroon’s NRL takes, 13-year-old Blake Herbert’s fishing reports (he’s a star in the making), and the popular Secret Sound competition, there’s never a dull moment. It’s real, it’s raw, and it’s honestly the best job in the world….it doesn’t really feel like work at all!

Blame The Wiggles! They sparked the performer in me early on. I was that kid who never stopped singing, dancing or pu ing on a show.

Then Triple M Mid North Coast came calling. I’ve been holidaying here for years, so when the chance came up to actually live here and call it work - I couldn’t say no. Now it feels like I’m on a permanent holiday!

You’ve been doing breakfast radio for almost a year now – how’s the ride been so far? How are you finding the early mornings of breakfast radio? It’s been a wild ride from

You’ve thrown yourself into the community in a big way – including dancing in Stars of the Hastings this year! Tell us about that experience. Blame The Wiggles! They sparked the performer in me early on. I was that kid who never stopped singing, dancing or putting on a show. I even had dreams of studying at a performing arts school before life threw a curveball like a global pandemic. That’s when I shifted from the stage to the studio and found my groove in radio and podcasting. But now… the stage is calling again! I’m teaming up with the amazing Meg for a rock theatre number in the Stars of the Hastings Dance For Cancer. I’m dancing for a cause that’s incredibly close to my heart. My Mum’s battled melanoma more

than once, and I lost my Pop to leukemia. He told me to follow my dreams, and I reckon he’d get a real kick out of seeing me bust a move on stage.

You’re a familiar voice to many, but outside of the studio what do you get up to when the mic’s off? Any hobbies or favourite local spots you love to visit? Carly (my amazing wife) and I beach crawl. Think pub crawl, but swap out the beer for sunscreen. We jump from beach to beach in Port Macquarie, trying to body surf. It’s good for a few belly laughs. We’re still exploring the Mid North Coast but so far, Lighthouse Beach lookout is our favourite spot. There’s just so much to love about this part of the world.

You’ve made a strong impression in the local community, what do you love most about life in Port Macquarie? The beaches are stunning, the people are welcoming and the lifestyle is just so chill. Mates who come to visit instantly want to uproot their lives and move here! I love the cute restaurants, grabbing a coffee, strolling the breakwall and planning camping trips. After three years up in cane toad territory, it feels good to be back in NSW.  And finally, what’s one song you never get sick of hearing on the air? “King of Wishful Thinking” by Go West absolutely slaps. We blast the studio speakers every time it plays. Thanks Sarge.

In The Good Old Days of Rock ‘n’ Roll, audiences will relive favourite songs from the hitmakers themselves, Little Pattie, Digger Revell, Jade Hurley, Dinah Lee & Lucky Starr.

Little Pattie’s debut single He’s My Blonde Headed, Stompie Wompie, Real Gone Surfer Boy, was released in 1963 when she was just 14 and reached number 2 on the Sydney music charts. Dinah Lee is a New Zealand-born superstar whose international number 1 hits include Don’t You Know Yockomo, Reet Petite, and Do the Blue Beat. Jade

Hurley, dubbed by Johnny O’Keefe as Australia’s King of Country Rock, has achieved gold, platinum or double platinum status in both Australia and New Zealand with every record he ever released. Lucky Starr is an Australian pioneer of rock ‘n’ roll, pop and country music. His most popular single, I’ve Been Everywhere, appeared in early 1962 and peaked at number 1. Digger Revell was credited with pioneering rock ‘n’ roll in Australia and has performed with some greats, including Chubby Checker, Bobby Rydell and Johnny O’Keefe.

ey Lachie, introduce yourself to our readers. Hey, I’m Lachie – a proud Port Macquarie local, the Licensee and Venue Manager at Finnians Tavern, and a member of the Hastings Liquor Accord committee. I’ve grown up around here, worked in hospitality for years, and I’ve seen first hand just how much heart and soul our region puts into its venues, local products, and the people behind them. That’s why I’m so excited to invite you to join us this June for Pour and Explore – a month-long festival celebrating the best of what the Hastings has to offer, one sip at a time. Whether you're a craft beer buff, a cocktail connoisseur, or someone who just loves discovering new places with good food, good drinks and good vibes — this is your kind of festival.

What is Pour and Explore? Pour and Explore is all about bringing our community together and showcasing the talent, creativity, and hospitality in our backyard. Across the month of June, venues right across the Hastings –from Wauchope to Port Macquarie to Laurieton – will be offering bespoke events, including exclusive tasting dinners, live music events, comedy nights and even Dachshund get togethers! Each participating venue has crafted something unique to showcase their style and offerings - live music, food pairing dinners,

JUNE 2025

and themed nights popping up across the region. There’s something different happening every week, which means there’s always a new reason to head out and explore somewhere new (or revisit an old favourite).

How can our readers get involved? Getting involved is super simple – and that’s the beauty of this festival. You can head to www. pourandexplore.au and check out the full list of participating venues and what they’ve got planned throughout June. From there, you can build your own "drink trail" and make a plan to experience the region at your own pace. Maybe you’re keen to hit a few bars in one afternoon, or maybe you want to make a weekly date night out of it – whatever your vibe is, this festival is designed to be flexible, fun, and totally your own. The calendar of events will be launching shortly! Also be sure to grab a copy of next months Focus magazine, as it will feature an insert on the festival with a calendar of events plus some feature articles on some of the events, we are most excited about!

What can we expect from this Festival?

Whether you’re a cra beer bu , a cocktail connoisseur, or someone who just loves discovering new places with good food, good drinks and good vibes -this is your kind of festival.

Expect to be surprised. Expect to find a new favourite drink or venue. Expect to meet locals who are passionate about what they do. Expect to see unique events not seen at our local venues before, or favourite events returning, and most importantly, expect a great time. From my perspective at Finnians, we’ve got two huge live music events in our carpark, including headline performances from acts like Ball Park Music and Thelma Plum. Hospitality is about connection. It’s about creating memories, sharing stories, and enjoying the simple things – like a great drink in great company. With Pour and Explore, we’re turning that into a month-long celebration of everything we love about our industry and our community.

So grab your friends, plan your trail, and get ready to pour, explore, and support local this June. I’ll see you at the bar.

Can you tell us about the origins of The Big Dig, how the idea came about and when it got started?

The Big Dig started in 2012 after taking inspiration from our Rotary New Zealand colleagues. One of our keen-eyed members (Kerrie Wood) was reading our monthly “Rotary Down Under” magazine which featured another club’s successful project and knew a good idea when she saw it. Rotary is a wonderful avenue to learn from others and implement locally. We are now 13 years on and it’s just getting bigger and better every year!

When did you get involved with this event and what is your role?

I’ve been privileged to be Chair of the organising committee this year. As “Head Pirate” my main responsibilities are project management and planning and arranging all

the various approvals for an event this size, including working with Council for the use of the reserve and organising additional waste removal, getting insurance sign offs… you know, the fun stuff. My biggest role is to coordinate the dedicated Big Dig committee, which really do all the hard work! There’s a fair bit of effort involved leading up to the day, which means we have a Rotary Sunrise committee dedicated to different areas including: sourcing and liaising with sponsors, researching and purchasing our children’s prize bags, visiting our local businesses in search of Family Dig prize donations, coordinating with our stallholders and activities on the day, and setting up the pits

Many families take part in the day with grandparents and extended family members, many dressing up in fun pirate costumes, which really adds to the atmosphere.

for digging and of course cleaning up after it’s all over, usually leaving Town Beach and the reserve cleaner than we found it!

What is The Big Dig?

What happens on the day of the event?

The Big Dig is a piratethemed family fun day held annually since 2012. Children and adults excitedly dig on the beach for buried tokens, with every participant receiving a prize. Many families take part in the day with grandparents and extended family members, many dressing up in fun pirate costumes, which really adds to the atmosphere. In 2024, 300 children and over 240 adults purchased tickets to participate, selling out in an hour! We have so many families returning year after year, it’s wonderful to see.

What are some of the activities that will be available on the day?

There are a range of fun activities for children and families, including face painting, pirate ship jumping castle, rock painting, giant footy dart board, dunking station, and delicious food including our Rotary BBQ, and special cupcakes and coffee (for the big kids!). This year we also have a silent disco catering for some of our community with sensory challenges. The atmosphere and fun are exciting, as all our Rotary volunteers, and most of the kids (and some parents!) dress up as pirates and really get into the fun of the day.

There are loads of prizes being given out at the event! What’s up for grabs and do you rely on prizes being donated?

Every ticket purchased wins a prize, which include age-appropriate bags for children with goodies sourced from far and wide, thanks to our amazing sponsors, such as Port City Bowling Club and MBC Recruitment who are our major sponsors.

We rely on local business donations and have had incredible support over the years, making it a very exciting dig for adults, as much as the kids!

difference even $500 can make to some of our local charities. We have worked closely with partner community groups and know the dedicated teams that deliver support directly where it’s needed.

Can you tell us about what the event has been able to help with in previous years?

make it on the day, what are some ways community members can get involved and support this cause?

Our adult Dig ensures a prize of at least $60 in value, with some valued at much more, some worth hundreds of dollars! We rely on local business donations and have had incredible support over the years, making it a very exciting dig for adults, as much as the kids!

This is a fundraising event, how are the funds raised and what will they go towards?

The funds are raised via the sale of tickets entitling you to dig for a prize plus sponsorship. Rotary Sunrise partners with a wide variety of local community organisations, with a particular focus on children, education, and domestic violence.

How do you hope the funds raised will help the recipients?

One of our main goals at Rotary Sunrise is to support our local community, and we know the

We have donated funds to some amazing organisations, including Liberty Domestic Violence Services, Headspace, Make a Difference, Orange Sky Laundry, Sailability, Hastings Education Fund and many others.

Can you tell us about some of the team involved in organising this event?

Our team are amazing, dedicating their precious time throughout the year to making the day a success. We start our planning the October before and cover everything from sourcing prizes and sponsors, organising online tickets and promotional material, baking amazing cupcakes and cooking our delicious BBQ on the day, to the physically hard work of preparing the “pits” on the day, ensuring they are safe, clean and smooth ready for excited treasure hunters!

For those that want to contribute but can’t

Rotary Sunrise would encourage community members to consider the amazing volunteering opportunities there are across our local area – an hour or two spent supporting others can change a life, build a friendship or even start a lifelong passion. Additionally, we have a donation link on our website if community members can contribute to the funds we raise on the day, at sunrise-rotary.org.au/

When and where? Can you give us the details we need to know to join in on the 18 May?

You can buy your tickets online on Facebook, by searching for Big Dig Treasure Hunt, or at facebook.com/events/929150882478089

Tickets can be purchased on the day, however there are usually only a limited number remaining, and they always sell out within the first hour…we recommend getting there early if you haven’t purchased ahead of time!

Head on down to Town Beach from 8:30am, with registration starting from 9am, the official opening at 10am, and the “digs” starting straight after.

Thanks Peter.

BBAR AND GRILL

locals

eachfront is not only Port City Bowling Club’s newest restaurant but Port Macquarie’s as well.

What are you most excited about at the Beachfront? The Beachfront stands apart from any other venue in Port Macquarie, offering a unique atmosphere that our locals truly appreciate. Each area, from the private dining room to the alfresco space with stunning views and sunsets, is perfect for enjoying drinks and snacks, all complemented by the generous layout of the restaurant.

When planning the menu what did you take into consideration and where did the inspiration come from? The inspiration for our menu stems from our careers, travels, and admiration for our favourite chefs. It captures everything we've learned from our very first menu to the most recent one. We enjoy experimenting with flavours and ingredients, and this menu showcases our passion for seafood and beef. One standout dish is our cured snapper, which is entirely unique to Beachfront. The flavours are incredible, and we’ve paired it with our favourite fruits and vegetables. We especially love the richness and sweetness that the roasted pumpkin consommé adds, perfectly complementing the snapper's sweet and salty notes.

Can you tell us about the menu and what you think will be the fan favourite? We’ve designed the Beachfront Bar and Grill menu with sharing in mind. We love seeing people enjoying our pizzas, fresh seafood share plates, and, of course, the quality steaks that have been hand-selected by our team. Each dish has been thoughtfully crafted to encourage connection and conversation, making it the perfect place for our guests to create lasting memories over a meal with friends and family.

With 8 cuts on the menu, ranging from a 280g Phoenix Flank to a 100% grass-fed Cape Grim Tomahawk, there’s such a great variety for everyone to enjoy, and the flavours are out of this world.

Our steaks have proven to be our fan favourite at Beachfront. With 8 cuts on the menu, ranging from a 280g Phoenix Flank to a 100% grass-fed Cape Grim Tomahawk, there's such a great variety for everyone to enjoy, and the flavours are out of this world.

Between Drift, Beachfront and the Sports Bar dining Port City have really ticked all the boxes. What are the main reasons for having each venue within the club different? We aimed to create a venue that caters to the entire family, ensuring that each dining space is unique and tailored for the best possible experience.

You’ll find that the Drift menu has been

space that stands out from anything else in town.

revamped, featuring a fresh selection of casual dining options and fantastic weekly specials designed with families in mind. Whether you’re enjoying lunch, dinner, or catching up with friends over morning or afternoon tea, it’s the perfect spot. We now offer burgers for both lunch and dinner, alongside pastas, schnitzels, salads, and more.

Our all-day bar menu has been thoughtfully crafted for our Sports Bar patrons and those enjoying our weekly events, providing an additional dining option when our restaurants reach full capacity.

Beachfront Bar & Grill is an upmarket restaurant known for serving some of the finest cuts of steak in town. It boasts a great selection of shareable starters, pizzas and mains. It’s the ideal place to celebrate a quality meal, good company while enjoying the stunning views over Oxley Beach and Oxley Oval. Our diners have expressed their love for the atmosphere, describing it as a relaxing

We have seen a whole new demographic enjoying the club and that’s what it’s all about. We encourage everyone to come in and check it out. If you aren’t a ‘club person’ I’m sure you’ll change your mind once you experience what our new renovations have to offer.

What would you say is the most rewarding part of running a kitchen and also the most challenging? The most fulfilling aspect of managing a kitchen is witnessing our team unite under pressure to create dishes that bring joy to others. When everything flows seamlessly - orders coming in, everyone in harmony, and plates being served perfectly it resembles a well-rehearsed performance. Additionally, there's a deep sense of pride in mentoring younger chefs and watching them develop their skills and confidence.

We love coming to work each day, utilising the finest produce from Australia, whether it's premium beef or fresh vegetables, and collaborating with inspiring individuals to achieve remarkable results. The most rewarding moments are when guests truly appreciate the food we've crafted. When they leave with smiles and return for more,

or when a dish you've meticulously prepared receives praise, it's incredibly gratifying. Moreover, the camaraderie in the kitchen creates a family-like bond that is immensely satisfying.

On the other hand, the most challenging aspect is the ongoing juggling act. Balancing the needs of staff, suppliers, consistency, cost control, and high expectations can be unyielding. The kitchen environment is demanding, both physically and mentally, and managing the stress while maintaining high morale is no easy task.

How do you incorporate local or seasonal ingredients into your menu and dishes? To incorporate local or seasonal ingredients into our menu and dishes, we first build relationships with local suppliers to ensure access to fresh produce and products. We then design our menu around the availability of these ingredients, allowing us to highlight the best of each season. Our team love to get creative by experimenting with new recipes that showcase these ingredients, while also adapting classic dishes to include seasonal twists. We trial these dishes on our specials board and rely on that feedback to make any necessary tweaks.

JOYCE CONSTRUCTIONS

Joyce Constructions is proud to announce the successful completion of the extensive renovation works at Port City Bowling Club. From refreshed interiors and upgraded facilities to enhanced accessibility and functionality, every detail was carefully cra ed to elevate the member and guest experience. We are thrilled to have worked alongside the Port City team to deliver a space that reflects their vibrant future while honouring their proud past.

Congratulations Mitch on your work at Port City Bowling Club, it looks amazing.

Can you walk us through the renovation process, what were the main objectives?

Thank you, we're thrilled with how it has turned out. The main objective was to minimise disruptions to the club and it's members.

When you're renovating half a club this can be difficult. To ensure we were able to maximise the club’s operations, the construction was staged into four sections where we focused on several areas including; administration offices, the sports bar, gaming area, alfresco, restaurant and functions spaces. How did you ensure the renovation would align with the club’s vision and goals?

The goal for the club was to create specific spaces which separated them from other

similar venues. They had a vision to elevate the experience for their guests and provide them with aesthetic and functional spaces to come together and enjoy. Our job was to ensure the quality construction reflected that vision.

Were there any specific design elements or themes that were important to incorporate?

The club wanted to create a point of difference between the various spaces so it was important to incorporate a range of elements while still maintaining a sense of harmony throughout. The architects and design team created a cohesive and functional plan which allowed our trades to execute their vision beautifully. What were you most proud of in terms

of the quality or craftsmanship of this renovation?

A lot of the trades who worked on the club are members themselves so it really helped to breathe life into the project, especially knowing it’s a local establishment which we’ll all use and enjoy.

Overall, the high quality of finishes and attention to detail throughout the various spaces is impressive. There were so many aspects of this project which required specialised trades and I think that’s reflected in these amazing spaces. There's also quite a lot of significant work behind the scenes (or walls so to speak), that you don't see. Because of the age of the club, the internal infrastructure required substantial upgrades. There's a lot of quality craftsmanship that you do and don't get to see.

Being a local building company do you think this helped with understanding

what the team at Port City were after in terms of the ‘look and feel’ that matches the area we live in?

Absolutely. The club and their design team had a clear vision which we were eager to execute. Being a local company, we always prioritse local trades whenever possible. A lot of the trades who worked on the club are members themselves so it really helped to breathe life into the project, especially knowing it's a local establishment which we'll all use and enjoy. We have a passion to get it right, and I think that's reflected in not only the look, but the feel of this incredible club.

What lessons did you learn from this project and what was the most rewarding part other than the completion of course?

Being involved in the early stages of implementation allowed us to identify areas we could modify to create a more seamless construction program. These key alterations allowed us to work smarter, not harder

along the way. It's all in the preparation. It's hard to top the feeling of completing a project, but I would say one of the most rewarding parts was finishing the Sports Bar ahead of schedule. It was great to see it in action over the Christmas holidays (speaking from personal experience).

What are some other projects you are working on that this recent renovation has inspired or helped with?

We have an upcoming project down in North Haven which we're excited about. We look forward to executing this in a similar way to bring their vision to life. In terms of inspiration, we've definitely stolen some ideas which we've incorporated into some of our recent residential projects. Being across most areas in construction we get to be creative with the use of some of our commercial building techniques and incorporate them into our residential projects which can result in some fantastic finishes some would not think of.

Thanks Mitch.

MAKING IT A MOTHER’S DAY TRADITION

Every year, for the last ten years in Port Macquarie, hundreds of locals have continued a Mother’s Day tradition, and many more join year after year for their very first time.

The annual Mother’s Day Classic has become an important fixture in the local event calendar, uniting people throughout the greater Port Macquarie region and further afield for a common cause.

The inspirational, cause-driven event, now in its 11th year in Port Macquarie and 28th year nationally is one of 85 events that will be held all over the country on Sunday 11 May. It consists of a 5km run and walk that meanders along the Hastings Riverfront and foreshore to Town Beach and return.

The Classic seeks to raise awareness of breast and ovarian cancer, while also encouraging fundraising for research. Research into prevention, early detection, better treatment options and improved outcomes for those Australians diagnosed with the diseases. Twelve Australians. Every day. Twelve Australians die from breast cancer and ovarian cancer every single day. That’s over 4,380 people, predominantly women, who die annually from these cancers. That’s thousands too many.

Twelve Australians die from breast cancer and ovarian cancer every single day. That’s over 4,380 people, predominantly women, who die annually from these cancers. That’s thousands too many.

This is why the Mother’s Day Classic (MDC) volunteers and event organisers continue

to step up so that everyone can step out for a very important cause, calling for more to be done to increase funding for research to improve survival rates.

Kylie Bulmer, one of two local volunteer event managers and the driving force of the event on the Mid North Coast, has been at the helm since its beginning in Port Macquarie. “I’ve had the privilege of organising the MDC since 2014 and it’s an honour to provide an event that recognises the strength and resilience of women, and helps build awareness, support, hope and inspiration for so many in our community.”

“Our event raises funds for the National Breast Cancer Foundation and more recently extended

to include the Ovarian Cancer Research Foundation as well. Two very important beneficiaries, supporting research programs that have a goal of saving people’s lives. It’s special to be involved in something that can have a huge impact.”

A community of passionate and loyal supporters

Over the years since the Mother’s Day Classic has been held in Port Macquarie, the event has attracted a community of passionate and loyal supporters, from corporate sponsors – local businesses who return year after year to enable the event to operate, through to in-kind event service providers that turn up each and every time to help the event volunteers, Kylie and Carmen provide event-day logistics and services. Naomi Hunter and the team from HEM Property are just one of those local businesses, now in

their 8th year of partnership with the event. Each year, HEM Property invites and builds a community of participants - family, friends, workmates and their clients, to put on the HEM fit shirts and turn up to walk or run.

"HEM Property is very proud to once again be involved with the Mother’s Day Classic as the major sponsor of the local event. This event is very special to our team and we are looking forward to walking and running on Mother’s Day with our family and friends,” says Naomi.

“Everyone of us has been touched by someone who has been through the cancer journey and this day is a special reminder to us all how much we love our mums and the special women in our lives.”

“Only by working together and continuing to raise funds for research, will we beat cancer for good! I can’t wait to see our amazing town all decked out in pink as we walk and run together to celebrate those who have survived, and to remember those who we hold so dearly in our hearts,” says Naomi.

The event, held at Westport Park, brings

together people of all ages, genders, professions and interests – from the serious runners right through to the casual walkers, alongside those with prams and little children. And, it’s not just those with a connection to breast or ovarian cancer who participate – the event is open to anyone and everyone, male and female, young and old.

Participants are encouraged to wear pink or teal – the colours of breast and ovarian cancer – and even take it a step further, to dress up in fun pink outfits, to help create an impact and raise awareness for research. Participants can also choose their fundraising cause, to fundraise for breast cancer research, ovarian cancer research, or both.

In that moment, my whole world had ipped.

Local community member Tracey Deane was diagnosed with ovarian cancer...

...and underwent treatment during 2024. Tracey is a passionate advocate for raising awareness of ovarian cancer, and intent on sharing her personal experience in the hope it may help save someone else’s life.

Tracey was experiencing some really vague symptoms for about six months which included tiredness, bloating, lack of appetite and then frequent urination. “This became a real concern which made me go to my GP,” says Tracey. “I just put it all down to working too hard and menopause. The bloating became so bad so quickly that I struggled bending over to put my runners on.”

“I knew absolutely nothing about ovarian cancer.”

“During the weeks of scans and blood tests and

doctors’ appointments there was no discussion of ovarian cancer. I thought the surgery I was about to have was to remove a cyst on my ovary.”

“A week after major abdominal surgery at John Hunter Hospital, the surgeon called me to give me the results from the pathology. She removed a large 22 cm, highly aggressive malignant ovarian tumour.”

“Unfortunately, she said ‘you have ovarian cancer, and, fortunately it's Stage 1,’” continues Tracey. “She said I was a very lucky woman. She told me ‘We need you to start treatment as soon as possible so I’m referring you to an Oncologist in Port Macquarie. You will have to undergo six cycles of chemotherapy which is about six to seven months.’”

“I said, an Oncologist?! At that moment my

GO PINK WITH HEM

heart sank, I started to cry. What did my future look like? In that moment my whole world had flipped. I had to then tell my family, friends and put my business on hold for however long. Then came the concerns of the financial burden on our lives. One income.”

Tracey says, “My partner and I went about gathering as much information we could to learn about ovarian cancer, to try and understand what we were up against, but nothing can prepare you for what was next. Gruelling chemo sessions, blood tests, drugs to deal with the side effects of chemo and more drugs to deal with what those drugs were doing. Losing your hair in clumps early on and the loss of taste, the intense pain, the fevers…the list goes on.”

“Amongst all of this was the emotional side where crying was maybe a call for hope and help, just to get through one day at a time,” reflects Tracey.

“We were shocked to learn that in 30 years there has been no improvement in targeted

therapies and still no detection test available to screen for ovarian cancer. I received the same treatment that a women would have received back in 1975! Pap smears do not detect ovarian cancer.”

“So my advice is to all women: listen to your body, speak to your GP. Don't put it off. And if it doesn't feel right, then push the issue. It may save your life,” advises Tracey.

“The Ovarian Cancer Research Foundation (OCRF) needs vital funds to continue the life saving research into ovarian cancer. Any donation, no matter how small will have a significant impact on women's lives. We are grateful that the Mother’s Day Classic Foundation has made the OCRF a beneficiary of the annual event. So please get involved on the day, enter this event –you can walk, run or sprint if you like. In numbers we can make a difference.”

“I'm one of the lucky ones, my fight is still not over but I'm certainly closer to that finish line.”

I feel so naïve looking back.
Michelle Ashby has stepped up this year to share her story. Here are her words.

“In September 2024, I was diagnosed with Stage IV high-grade serious ovarian cancer.”

“Looking back, I hadn’t recognised any of the symptoms. I’d struggled with stomach issues for years and assumed it was just Irritable Bowel Syndrome. Then, in June 2024 on an overseas trip, I began experiencing abnormal bleeding and decided to book an internal ultrasound once I returned back to Australia. By the time I got the diagnosis, the cancer had spread to my lymph nodes - in my neck, chest, pelvis, and abdomen,” says Michelle.

“The following six months were the most challenging of my life.”

“With the support of my amazing friends and family, I went through two surgeries and six

MOTHER’S DAY CLASSIC AMBASSADORS

rounds of chemotherapy. It tested me both mentally and physically, but with the help from my Oncologist and the wonderful staff at the Mid North Coast Cancer Institute in Port Macquarie, I’m incredibly grateful to have been told I am now cancer free.”

Michelle says, “I feel so naive looking back. As a woman, I believed that as long as I stayed on top of pap smears and mammograms, I was doing all I could. But I was wrong. A pap smear does not detect ovarian cancer—and I wish I’d known that sooner!”

“Ovarian cancer is often called the ‘silent killer’ because its symptoms are so easily overlooked or mistaken for less serious conditions. I now realise how important it is to know the signs: Persistent bloating, Pelvic or abdominal pain, Feeling full quickly when eating, Frequent urination, Abnormal bleeding. If something doesn’t feel right, trust your instincts. Early detection can save lives. Listen to your body and don’t be afraid to push for answers.”

SOME IMPORTANT BREAST CANCER AND OVARIAN CANCER FACTS

BREAST CANCER

Almost 250 women on the Mid North Coast are expected to be diagnosed with breast cancer this year. Breast cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer in women on the Mid North Coast and the second most common cause of cancer death.

1 in 7 women in NSW will be diagnosed with breast cancer in their lifetime.

More than 75% of women who are diagnosed with breast cancer are aged over 50.

A family history does increase your risk of breast cancer, but 9 out of 10 women diagnosed had no family history. This is why all women must remain vigilant.

OVARIAN CANCER

Around 20 women on the Mid North Coast are expected to be diagnosed with ovarian cancer in 2025.

It is the 10th most commonly diagnosed cancer in women on the Mid North Coast and the 6th most common cause of cancer death.

Ovarian cancer is highly treatable when found early. However more than two-thirds of ovarian cancers diagnosed in NSW have already spread.

The five-year survival rate for those diagnosed with ovarian cancer is just 49%. That’s why we need to invest in research and why the Mother’s Day Classic has extended its support to include the Ovarian Cancer Research Foundation (OCRF).

What

to Wear When the Weather’s Chucking a Tanty

Autumn in Australia is like a toddler with a Vegemite sandwich – unpredictable, a bit messy, and likely to turn at any moment. One minute it’s jumper weather, the next you’re stripping off like you’re at Town Beach on a 30-degree day. So, what do you wear when the forecast is basically “maybe”?

Start with Layers

Layers are your best friend. Throw on a lightweight, oversized tee or tank, then add a knit or a cardi you can peel off when the sun decides to show up uninvited. A denim jacket or even a shacket (yes, it’s a thing) gives you

just enough warmth without feeling like you’re wrapped in your doona.

The Colours You’ll Be Seeing Everywhere

This season’s colours are pure autumn vibes, but make it chic:

Lilac – a cheeky little pastel that somehow works, even if you’re just ducking down to Woolies.

Boot Up, Baby

Whether you’re heading to brunch or the footy, boots are back and they mean business. Ankle boots, knee-highs, or something with a chunky heel, they go with everything and hide the fact you haven’t shaved your legs since summer. No judgement here.

Layers are your best friend. row on a lightweight, oversized tee or tank, then add a knit or a cardi you can peel o when the sun decides to show up uninvited.

Burgundy – like a glass of red after a long day wrangling kids or emails.

Chocolate brown – rich, warm, and way more stylish than your Easter stash.

Sky blue – crisp and fresh, like a sunny afternoon on Lighthouse Beach.

Prints? Still On the Menu

Leopard – animal print is basically a neutral in Australia. Pair it with your knit or tee and you’ll look like you’ve got your life sorted (even if you’re running late and forgot your coffee on the roof of the car - again!).

Final Touches

Throw on a crossbody bag and don’t forget sunnies — because it will be bright again in about 20 minutes.

Dressing for the Aussie cool-down is a fine art of layering, laughing, and keeping a weather app on speed dial. Just remember: if all else fails, add a bit of leopard print!

focus contributor.

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again; life is one big learning curve, and being in small business is an even steeper one. This has never been more apparent to me than over the past few weeks.

For those who follow me on our socials, you may know that we have been working on a rather big change in store. I’ve labelled it a renovation, which in fact it was because builders were involved, but it was more than that, it was a complete transformation.

Now many of you will know that I have been the “person” behind Meg + Me for the past 13 or so years, and have slowly but surely (along with our team) blossomed this once small concern into the well respected business it is today. But as I look back over our journey, I have realised we have had some key moments of growth and this is definitely one of them. In small business, especially regional small business, the phrase “Jack of all trades, Master of none” is never far from any retailer’s mind. While there are countless well documented studies around the psychology of retail and the best way to maximise a customer’s in store experience, the actual implementation of that in real life is left down to Good Ole Me… I’m no professor when it comes to retail psychology but I have learned a thing or two over the years. Buckle up ladies and gentlemen, your lesson starts here!

You know when you go to the “city” and you walk through one of those fancy stores,

or a shopping mall and you see all those beautifully merchandised displays, the themed mannequins, the lighting hitting the racks “just so”, the subtle or not so subtle signage, the music, the scent of the space and all the other little details that you don’t even realise are there which have been carefully curated to entice you to stay a little longer and ultimately open your wallet…? Well you can bet your bottom dollar there’s a team of highly skilled (and handsomely paid) professionals behind all of that.

But not for us.

When it comes to store layout, lighting, brand identity and all the other finer (but very important) details, the ‘big boys’ leave us small independent retailers for dust. But there is one area that those big boys can’t compete with us and where we will win every single time. It’s our connection to community.

While we may struggle to do our best within our own limitations, relying on our “on the job” learnings and tiny budgets, a passionately run small business will nearly always win on customer service and consumer satisfaction when pitched against the big boys. Sure their websites might be slightly easier to navigate (or not, I am looking at you Zara!) and their advertising budget may have a few more zeros than ours, but that pales into insignificance

when compared to actually being “valued” as a consumer by a committed small business owner.

For me, the excitement was palpable as we proudly opened our newly transformed spaces to the public for the very first time after our complete refresh (for images see our shiny double page spread on pages 4/5). But as with anything new it’s amazing what people tune into, and it’s often not what you’d expect. “Is that light fitting new” I’m asked. “Nope, been here since we opened”. “What about that stunning mural?” “No that was there too… But we have built these three gorgeous new fitting rooms” and that’s when you see the penny drop.

Sometimes when it is meant to be, the most obvious of changes can be hidden in full sight. When things work, you often don’t notice them, it’s when they don’t that they become blindingly obvious. So when I watch people navigate our new spaces, I am proud that this ‘Jack of all Trades’ has pulled off a master transformation, that feels so effortlessly natural it isn’t immediately obvious that this isn’t how it’s always been.

For me, this is the ultimate definition of being a good learner.

I can’t wait to welcome you in store to experience our new spaces for yourself soon!

Kevin Evans

HKevin Evans and his wife Angela started Rainbow Bricks as a way to connect with other fellow LEGO lovers and share their brightly coloured creations. They now host numerous Brickfest events around the state, with the 7th annual Port Macquarie Brickfest being held on Sunday May 25th, at Port Macquarie Indoor Sports Stadium. Proceeds from the event will be donated to the Port Macquarie Base Hospital Pink Ladies.

i Kevin, for those who haven’t heard of Rainbow Bricks, can you tell us how it all began and what inspired you to start the group?

In 2010, my wife Angela, then a fundraiser for our son’s public school, sought innovative fundraising ideas. Together with Angela and another member who still showcases some of the students' artwork, we presented our LEGO creations at the event.

Rainbow Bricks was officially established in 2013 when my wife, a fan of the vibrant LEGO colour palette, proposed creating a group dedicated to builds featuring bright hues or all the colours of the rainbow.

However, we embrace every colour under the rainbow! Since then, our membership has grown steadily to 140 members.

Rainbow Bricks has grown into such a thriving community of LEGO lovers, what do you think it is about LEGO that brings people together so powerfully?

I think it's the universal appeal of LEGO. It transcends age, gender, and background. Everyone has some kind of connection to it, whether it's childhood memories or a current hobby. It's a fantastic creative outlet, a way to de-stress, and a fantastic conversation starter. When you see someone else's creation, you instantly have something in common. Plus, there's a real sense of accomplishment in building something and sharing that with others who understand the

effort and creativity involved, that creates a strong bond.

You’ve got over a hundred members now, including some seriously skilled builders, what does it mean to be a member and who can join?

Anyone over 18 can join after they have exhibited twice at a Rainbow Bricks event.

Being a member of Rainbow Bricks is about being part of a supportive and enthusiastic community. It means having a platform to share your builds, learn new techniques from others, participate in group projects, and be involved in events like Brickfest. We welcome anyone genuinely interested in LEGO, regardless of their skill level. Whether you're just starting out or you're a seasoned

master builder, if you love LEGO and want to connect with others who do, then you're welcome to join us. It's about the passion, not the proficiency.

Port Macquarie Brickfest is just around the corner! What can visitors expect from this event and are there any new displays or interactive features to look forward to?

We’ll also have our popular interactive Build Areas for the kids (and the young at heart). ere will be something for everyone, from the casual observer to the hardcore LEGO fan.

Port Macquarie Brickfest is shaping up to be fantastic! Visitors can expect a huge array of incredible LEGO displays, showcasing everything from intricate cityscapes and Star Wars scenes to amazing original creations and mosaics. We'll have builders on hand to chat about their work and answer questions. This year, we're excited to have lots of new builds that our members have been working hard on, plus a few old favourites like the LEGO City. We'll also have our popular interactive Build Areas for the kids (and the young at heart). There will be something for everyone, from the casual observer to the hardcore LEGO fan.

These Brickfest events aren't just for fun, they’re for a cause. Where do the funds raised in Port Macquarie go, and why is giving back such an important part of what you do?

The funds raised at Port Macquarie Brickfest will go to Port Macquarie Base Hospital Pink Ladies. We believe it's really important to use our passion for LEGO to make a

positive impact in our community. Brickfest is a fantastic way to bring people together and generate funds for those who need it most. It adds another layer of meaning to what we do - it's not just about the bricks; it's about building a better community as well.

Can you share a memorable moment from a past Brickfest, whether it was an epic build, a wide-eyed kid, or a funny behind-the-scenes moment?

There are so many memorable moments! One that always sticks with me is from a previous Brickfest. We had a young boy, maybe around six or seven, mesmerised by a huge LEGO castle one of our members built. He spent half an hour staring at it, pointing out all the little details. Later, his mum told us that he went home and immediately began building his own castle, completely inspired. Witnessing that spark of creativity ignited in a child because of our event is incredibly rewarding.

Rainbow Bricks is all about collaboration and community. How do you foster that spirit both online and in person?

We foster that spirit through regular online communication, sharing builds, and offering feedback within our member groups. In person, our regular meetings and build days allow members to connect face-to-face,

share tips and tricks, and enjoy building together. Brickfest is a massive collaborative effort, with everyone pitching in to make it a success. It's about creating a welcoming and supportive environment where everyone feels valued and inspired.

For kids (and adults!) who visit Brickfest and leave totally inspired, what’s your advice for getting started as a builder— especially for those dreaming of joining a group like yours?

My advice would be simple: just start building!

Don't be afraid to experiment, try different techniques, and most importantly, have fun. Look at other people's creations for inspiration, but don't feel pressured to replicate them exactly. Your unique ideas are what makes LEGO so exciting. Those who dream of joining a group like ours should come to a public event like Brickfest and see what it's all about. Reach out to us online, and don't be shy! We're always happy to welcome new members who share our passion. The best way to learn and grow as a builder is to connect with others who love LEGO just as much as you do.

Thanks Kevin.

We sat down with Dr. Kristy to ask her why skincare is more than just self-care, and how prescription options are changing the game for real results.

Why is skincare such a central part of what you do at PMAC? Because your skin is the largest organ in your body, and it reflects so much about your internal health, hormones, and age. Whether someone is coming to us for injectables, scar management, acne, or menopauserelated changes, the first thing we assess is skin quality. A beautiful result is built on a foundation of healthy skin, and you simply can’t skip that step.

A lot of people feel overwhelmed by skincare. What’s your advice for someone who’s just not sure where to start? You’re not alone. There’s so much marketing noise, shelf after shelf of products all claiming to do the same thing, but great skincare doesn’t have to be complicated. In fact, I believe in simplifying. Our team works with patients to identify what their skin actually needs - not what’s trending. We usually narrow things down to just a few targeted products that

work synergistically.

What are the key benefits of a welldesigned skincare routine? A consistent and clinically appropriate skincare plan helps:

• Strengthen the skin barrier

• Improve hydration and texture

• Reduce pigmentation and redness

• Support collagen production

• Prevent and reverse early signs of ageing We often see patients who’ve invested thousands into treatments but are sabotaging their results with poor or inconsistent skincare. A good plan not only maintains results - it amplifies them.

What is prescription skincare, and how is it different from retail skincare?

Prescription skincare includes ingredients that are medically regulated and only available via a doctor. These are compounded specifically for the patient, meaning they're made to suit their exact skin type and concern. The actives are stronger or in combinations that can’t be sold over the counter. At PMAC, we offer prescription skincare made by a compounding pharmacy and delivered to the patient’s home.

What kinds of results are you seeing with prescription skincare? Some of the transformations are phenomenal. We’ve had patients with years of pigmentation or acne who see visible improvements in weeks. We also use it for patients preparing for, or recovering from treatments like skin needling or nanofractional resurfacing. It helps improve skin function and strengthen healing.

Is prescription skincare safe for everyone? It’s safe when prescribed appropriately.

We assess all patients before initiating any prescription. We check for contraindications and allergies, and we always educate patients on how to use it properly. It’s not a “one-sizefits-all” approach - it’s a personalised plan with built-in follow-up.

What about people who don’t need prescription skincare? Is retail skincare still useful? Absolutely. Not everyone needs a compounded cream. But everyone deserves a plan that works. We stock and recommend a curated range of medical-grade and retail grade skincare and match products to the patient’s goals and budget. Whether it's prescription or over-the-counter, we guide patients to what’s actually effective, and not just what’s trending on socials.

Final thoughts for someone wondering if skincare is “worth it”? Skincare is worth it because you’re worth it. Whether you're managing a concern or want to age gracefully, investing in your skin is one of the best things you can do. Especially when it comes to sunscreen!

Women’s Health Physiotherapy: ore Than Just Kegels

When people hear the word physiotherapist, they usually think of someone treating a sprained ankle or helping an athlete recover from injury. While that’s true for many physiotherapists, there’s a whole world of physiotherapy dedicated to a part of the body that’s often overlooked — the pelvic floor.

As Women’s Health Physiotherapists, we work with women across all stages of life to help them with issues that aren’t always visible — but are absolutely life-changing when managed well.

Let’s unpack what this means, what we actually do, and why seeing a Women’s Health Physiotherapist can be a game-changer.

So… What Is the Pelvic Floor, and Why Does It Matter?

The pelvic floor is a group of muscles and connective tissues that sit like a hammock at the base of your pelvis. It supports your bladder, bowel, and uterus, helps control continence, plays a huge role in sexual function, and supports your core and spine. When it’s working well, you hardly think about it. But when it’s not? You really feel it.

Many women experience pelvic floor issues after pregnancy, birth, surgery, menopause, or simply through the natural process of ageing. But here’s the thing — these issues are common, but not normal, and there’s a lot we can do to help.

What Conditions Do We Treat?

We assess and manage pelvic floor dysfunction, which can look like:

Incontinence (leaking urine when you laugh, sneeze, run, or just can’t make it to the toilet in time).

Prolapse (when one or more pelvic organs drop and create a sensation of heaviness or bulging)

Pelvic pain, including pain during intercourse, period pain, or pain after childbirth.

Diastasis Recti (abdominal separation after pregnancy).

Bowel issues, including constipation or bowel leakage.

Pre and post natal care, including birth preparation, recovery support, and return to exercise.

Post-surgical rehab, such as after hysterectomy or pelvic mesh surgery.

Menopause support, including managing bladder symptoms, dryness, and sexual discomfort.

How Are We Different to Other Physios?

All physiotherapists are trained in movement and musculoskeletal function — but Women’s Health Physiotherapists undergo additional, extensive training to assess and treat the pelvic floor muscles, pelvic organs, and associated structures. We don’t just look at your posture and give you a few exercises — we take a deep dive into what’s happening on the inside. This can be difficult to assess and understand, as the pelvic floor isn’t something women can easily see or check themselves, unlike other areas of the body

(like your shoulder, for example).

But more importantly, we look at the whole woman — not just the muscles. We ask about your birth story, toileting habits, intimacy, exercise, goals, and how your symptoms are impacting your daily life. It’s holistic, respectful, and deeply empowering care.

Why It

Matters.

Pelvic floor issues can affect every part of a woman’s life — from how she exercises, to her confidence in public, to her ability to enjoy intimacy, or simply laugh without leaking. Yet many women suffer in silence, thinking “this is just what happens after kids” or “it’s too embarrassing to bring up.”

It’s not, and you are absolutely not alone.

A Women’s Health Physiotherapist can offer personalised, evidence-based solutions to help you get back to doing the things you love — whether that’s chasing toddlers, going for a run, jumping on a trampoline, not having to plan your outings around bathroom stops, or simply feeling confident in your body again.

Women’s health is real health, and you deserve care that sees and supports you as a whole person — not just a set of symptoms. Whether you’re recovering from birth, dealing with a prolapse, or simply wondering if your pelvic floor is “doing its job,” a Women’s Health Physio is here to help.

It’s not just about muscles. It’s about restoring confidence, comfort, and quality of life.

You don’t have to put up with it, and you’re not alone.

WISHING ALL MOTHERS & THOSE IN MOTHERING ROLES A VERY HAPPY MOTHER’S DAY

Aday to acknowledge, celebrate, and express gratitude to the mothers, grandmothers, nans, aunts, sisters, friends, neighbours, and even the dads who offer motherly love and support for another. This is also a month focusing on the physical, mental and emotional health of women.

For many women, life is busy with multitasking and juggling a few different hats, roles and responsibilities. Maintaining a work-life or study/work-life balance can be a challenge and the responsibilities of family and relationships, or being a carer for another, or coping with one’s own health issue, or the health issue of a loved one, can feel demanding and often exhausting.

Navigating change and life’s challenges can be stressful and may cause one to feel overwhelmed or anxious.

Whatever the Journey, it’s so important to practice self-care or the mothering of self. Day by Day. Moment by Moment. Breath by Breath.

My mother passed away over three years ago, but only last month did I receive one of her many old teaspoons. Actually, I was given her old tin containing many teaspoons that she had collected over her 93 years, but the one that stood out to me was the small silver teaspoon, embellished with the beautiful rose, stem and leaves.

This teaspoon was significant, not only because my mother had lovingly tended an abundant rose garden for much of her life, but also because the rose is a symbol of LOVE.

This small teaspoon now rests alongside my laptop and is a friendly daily reminder to give myself a daily dose of self-care and to MOTHER MYSELF!

WAYS TO MOTHER YOURSELF to help you manage the demands of life and to give yourself a daily dose of Motherly Love.

• Be patient with yourself.

• Speak kindly to yourself.

• Take a break if you feel overwhelmed. Take even a one minute pause to follow your breathing as you relax your shoulders and jaw. Or go outside and enjoy a 5-minute walk, or sit a while and watch the clouds pass, or the trees outside the window.

• Maintain healthy boundaries.

• Prioritise getting enough sleep.

• Schedule a short meditation practice into your day.

To help you be in the present moment and quieten your thoughts.

• Seek Support.

Jill Wong

Hi Jill, congratulations on your appointment as Chief Executive of the Mid North Coast Local Health District. What does this new chapter mean to you personally and professionally?

This new chapter means so much to me. It really is so much more than just a role or title; it’s an absolute privilege to lead an organisation that plays such a vital part in supporting the health and wellbeing of our community.

Over the past six months as the Interim Chief Executive, I’ve had the honour of seeing firsthand the passion, care and commitment of our 5,000 staff. The commitment to ensuring person-centred, equitable and accessible healthcare inspires me everyday and I’m truly humbled to continue this journey alongside them.

Jill Wong steps into her new role as Chief Executive of the Mid North Coast Local Health District with a wealth of experience and a deep commitment to community wellbeing. In this interview, she shares her vision for inclusive, compassionate leadership and the innovative ways the district is transforming healthcare delivery across the region.

You’ve spoken about empowering staff to deliver exceptional, inclusive and accessible healthcare, what does that look like in practice across such a large and diverse region?

For me, empowering staff to deliver exceptional, inclusive and accessible healthcare starts with kindness. Small gestures and genuine kindness in how we can care for each other to care for our community – one that we are all a part of. Strategies we work towards include recognising the everyday efforts of the many ‘quiet achievers’ across our district. There are 5000 people who make a difference every single day, without fanfare, but with utter dedication.

The other practice for me is listening, learning, understanding and working to provide people the tools and enablers they need to do their best and be their best. I believe in encouraging new ideas, welcoming innovation, being open

equity and inclusion are part of everything we

do. When our staff feel valued and connected to their purpose, I truly believe that great care naturally follows.

Your vision includes a more sustainable, holistic model of care. How is Mid North Coast Local Health District working to balance acute care with proactive wellness and prevention initiatives?

Creating this model of care means finding the right balance between responding to acute needs and investing in wellness, early intervention and prevention.

Like all public sector services, we’re focused on the best utilisation of our resources to continue providing high-quality, timely and accessible care that delivers real benefits to the overall health and wellbeing of our communities.

I recognise that Mid North Coast Local Health District cannot succeed in isolation, our partnerships with our community leaders, services and healthcare partners are vital. Partnership and collaboration with our nonhealthcare partners is a huge pool of potential in shifting how we can educate, empower and engage with our community around healthy lifestyle habits, health literacy, healthcare navigation and service awareness.

We are continuingly exploring ways to improve how care is delivered, to connect care to people

where it is needed, when it is needed, leveraging technology and reducing barriers to access and strengthening our partnerships.

All that we continue to explore is with the aim to ensure that we provide safer and more effective care, that we see positive outcomes now and into the future, and that our care provision is financially sustainable.

One of your priorities is partnering with First Nations communities to improve health outcomes. What are some of the strategies or partnerships in place to support this goal?

We’re working closely with First Nations communities, Aboriginal Medical Services, and key partners to deliver healthcare that is culturally safe, accessible, and equitable.

Each role has reinforced the belief that e ective leadership starts with listening, empathy and respect, and is grounded in kindness, equity and commitment to clarity and accountability.

We're deeply committed to closing the gap and this means working with our First Nations communities. We will build on the strong foundations and partnerships with our Aboriginal Medical Services, our Aboriginal community-controlled health organisations, local Elders, future First Nations leaders and clinicians, including our Aboriginal Health Workers and Practitioners who play a critical role in shaping how care is delivered.

Some of the key strategies in place include co-designing health programs that reflect the unique needs of each community, increasing the number of Aboriginal staff across all levels of our health services, investing in cultural safety training for all our employees and partnering with our communities to ensure our services are accessible, culturally sensitive and respectful. We're also working to improve access to care in rural and remote areas through innovative models like our Mid North Coast Virtual Care service, Bowraville General Practice Clinic, community groups and community outreach clinics.

Ultimately, our focus is on listening, learning and walking alongside our First Nations partners to

ensure every step forward is a shared one, steps that are grounded in respect, trust and a genuine commitment to better health outcomes for our community.

You’ve had a fascinating career across law, social work, child protection and health. How have these diverse roles shaped your approach to leadership in the healthcare space?

My career across these fields has given me a deep understanding of people, systems and the importance of recognising and appreciating the social determinants of health and the value of considering the whole person and whole picture. Each role has reinforced the belief that effective leadership starts with listening, empathy and respect, and is grounded in kindness, equity and commitment to clarity and accountability.

I have always had a strong commitment to social justice and advocacy, for those whose voices aren’t always heard. This has been the driver of all that I have done in my career, from roles as a social worker in health and child protection, to my time in law and health leadership, I’ve seen how all of these elements of the broader ecosystem come together and I believe that strong systems and partnership, education and understanding, compassionate leadership and culturally safe care can truly change lives. As a leader, I bring this understanding to everything I do.

You were instrumental in developing the MNC Virtual Care Service. Can you tell us more about that innovation and how virtual care is changing health service delivery?

I am so proud to have worked with exceptional members of the Mid North Coast Local Health District, our partners in NSW Ambulance, our community healthcare partners and our community to create, adapt and roll out the MNC Virtual Care service.

This innovative service was born out of necessity during the COVID-19 pandemic and initially commenced as COVID Care in the Community, but through adaptation, adjustment and hearing and responding to the needs of the communitythe service has evolved into a cornerstone of how we deliver timely, accessible, person-centred urgent care services across our region.

MNC Virtual Care connects patients with general practitioners, nurses and allied health professionals via phone or video, offering rapid assessment and treatment for nonlife-threatening conditions. The team also supports chronic disease management and care navigation, helping patients access the right services at the right times reducing unnecessary emergency department visits.

This model has been especially impactful in our rural and remote communities, Reducing the reliance on access to transportation by leveraging technology and virtual platforms to connect with people in real time in the comfort of their homes and residences.

Thanks Jill.

Chloe, as a passionate business owner and committed mum, you are only too familiar with the juggling act. Firstly, can you tell us a little about your boutique luxury hair salon. What are your specialities and what services do you provide?

Hair on Banks is a luxury boutique home salon designed to be your personal sanctuary, a safe, welcoming space where you can truly relax. Away from work, I know you are a loving mom who cherishes quality time with your family and daughter Leylah. How do you establish workable boundaries between running a full time business and being there for your 2 year old?

Running Hair On Banks is a dream come true, but my most important role is being mum to my beautiful daughter, Leylah. She is so full of energy, curiosity, and loves cuddles! Finding balance between my salon and motherhood isn’t always easy, but I’ve learned to set healthy boundaries. I make sure my salon hours align with our family routines and that structure really helps both my work and home life flow better.

To support my amazing clients who also work full-time, I offer one late-night appointment a week, so they don’t have to sacrifice their own routines to get their hair done. It’s all about flexibility, boundaries, and being present, both in the salon and at home.

May is the month of Mother’s Day, what does this celebration mean to you?

To me, this celebration is more than just a day, it's a reminder of the strength, love, and patience that motherhood requires every single day. It’s also a chance to honour all the incredible women who love, guide, and nurture, whether you're a mum, a mother figure, or a woman lifting others up with kindness and care. Since becoming a mum to beautiful Leylah, I’ve gained a whole new appreciation for the little moments, sticky kisses, cuddles on the couch, and the way her eyes light up when she sees me. Mother’s Day is a time to pause and soak it all in.

Do you have some Mother’s Day special offers for new and existing clients for May?

Eyecare for women

Hi Max, you have been an optometrist for many years now, can you tell us if there are there any specific vision concerns or risks that are more common in women?

Many eye diseases, such as glaucoma, macular degeneration, and diabetic retinopathy, can develop gradually with no noticeable symptoms until significant damage has occurred. Regular eye exams allow optometrists and eye doctors to detect these conditions in their early stages, preventing vision loss.

Hormonal Changes. Women’s vision can be affected by hormonal fluctuations.

Pregnancy: Hormonal changes during pregnancy can cause temporary vision changes, including blurred vision, dry eyes, and swelling in the cornea. An eye exam can help manage these changes and ensure no underlying issues, like preeclampsia, affect the eyes.

Menopause: Hormonal shifts can lead to dry eyes and an increased risk of developing conditions like cataracts or macular degeneration.

Women have a higher risk of certain eye conditions:

Age-Related Macular Degeneration (AMD): AMD, a condition that affects central vision and can lead to blindness if left untreated.

Dry Eye Syndrome: Women are more prone to developing dry eyes, especially during menopause.

Cataracts: Women are at higher risk for cataracts, which is the clouding of the lens in the eye. Regular exams help detect cataracts early, and surgical intervention can restore vision.

Glaucoma: Women over 60 are at a higher risk for developing glaucoma, a disease that damages the optic nerve and can lead to blindness if untreated.

Lifestyle factors that can affect eye health:

Women are more likely to wear contact lenses, and improper care or wearing them too long can lead to infections or other complications. The use of eye makeup, such as mascara or eyeliner, can sometimes cause infections if not properly removed or if products become contaminated.

Blush is locally owned, and run by a team of Skin Care Professionals which includes the two new owners Jess and Syrella who both each have 20 years of experience under their belts. Joined by their beautiful team members Meg and Georgia, they are a small passionate team that love going above and beyond for their amazing clients.

At Blush, we believe that you deserve to be nurtured and nourished in a results driven environment . At our beautiful Port Macquarie salon, we focus on gently restoring and revealing your beauty, allowing you to feel more confident.

Results combined with relaxation is something we strive for in each treatment. This is also why we carry the Scan X device so we can track not only what’s happening on the surface but also within the deeper layers.

This device also lets us really tailor make a personalised treatment plan for each and every client that can combine homecare, internal supplements, skin needling, LED, lymphatic therapy, peels and facials.

We are proud stockist of Medik8, Dermaviduals, Environ, PRIN and SIMKA.

Age and Your Smile…

If it feels like your smile looks different than it did a decade ago, you’re not imagining it. Our bodies age… as does our smile. These changes take different forms from shifting teeth, staining, receding gum line… the appearance and function of your teeth and bite evolve as you get older.

The good news is, there are ways to minimise these age-related changes and keep your smile looking its best throughout your life.

WHY YOUR SMILE CHANGES AS YOU AGE?

Some changes are due to natural biological processes:-

• Regular wear and tear, Bruxism and grinding

• Gum recession and long teeth

• Yellowing, staining or colour changes

• Tooth loss and bone loss

• Untreated malocclusion (bad bite)

• Gum Disease

• Medications

WAYS YOUR SMILE CAN CHANGE WITH AGE

Changes in the Length or Shape of Teeth; All of the biting and chewing you do can cause your teeth to slowly wear down. Teeth grinding and clenching, known as bruxism, can speed up the process. This impacts your smile by changing the length of your teeth making them shorter and blunter and this can cause your bite to collapse in on itself.

Gum recession does the opposite by exposing more tooth surface and making teeth look longer. It can also leave visible black spaces between the teeth. Regardless of whether the teeth become shorter, longer or misshapen, the end result is the same. Where there was symmetry now your teeth look uneven and out of proportion.

Staining, Yellowing or Aging of the Teeth. With age and wisdom sometimes comes staining

of your teeth. The choices we make such as eating, drinking smoking can stain and age your teeth which makes them appear older, sometimes as much as 3-5 shades of colour.

Tooth Loss. If you have missing teeth the remaining teeth around the spaces can collapse inwardly. This is because the teeth try to fill in the empty spaces. As the teeth tilt or shift into the gaps, it will impact the appearance of your smile, as well as your bite. Missing teeth may also change your face shape, how you eat, chew and smile. Bone loss goes hand in hand with tooth loss. If you loose a tooth the bone that held the tooth in place no longer gets the necessary stimulation and the bone starts to reabsorb causing a further ‘sinking’ of the bone. This too can change the shape of your face and how you bite putting more pressure on your remaining teeth.

Misalignment of the teeth or jaw, known as malocclusion, doesn’t sort itself out with time. In many cases, if issues like crowding, spacing, an overbite, underbite, open bite or crossbite aren’t treated, they will get worse as you get older. And after years of living with a bad bite, you may also be dealing with the consequences of misalignment, such as broken teeth, gum disease, excessive wear of the enamel, and pressure on the temporomandibular joints (TMJ) that leads to TMJ pain and dysfunction. These issues will create further changes to your smile.  Gum disease affects a larger portion of the population as we age. This chronic systemic disease attacks the tissue that attaches your teeth to the bone and can cause loose teeth, shrinking of the gums, bad breath and change

the overall appearance of your smile. What’s more this condition is linked to diabetes, heart disease and cancers of the blood.

Medications. A life time of taking medication can also affect your teeth. Some medications change the colour of your teeth, others make your mouth dry and reduce saliva production and the protection of your teeth. This leaves your teeth vulnerable to decay.

HOW TO PREVENT AGE-RELATED CHANGES TO YOUR SMILE

• Practice Excellent Oral Hygiene-Brushing twice a day with a soft bristled toothbrush and fluoride toothpaste. Flossing once a day will also keep your smile healthy and minimise changes to the appearance of your smile.

• Keep Up With Regular Dental Care Visiting your dentist every six months for an exam and cleaning is crucial.

• Address Oral Habits. Mouth breathing, tongue thrust and bruxism cause changes in your bite.

• Wear Your Orthodontic Retainer for Life

If you had orthodontic treatment in the past, wearing your retainer will prevent your teeth from moving. To keep all changes to a minimum, wear your retainer every night for life!

Abi Gibson is about to compete in her fourth Ironman and is a strong advocate for the sport and what it opens up for you. For her, it was an introduction to Port Macquarie where she now lives with her husband Luke and their son Cooper, and the a rmation that you can achieve whatever you set your mind to!

Hi Abi, can you tell us what first inspired you to take on the challenge of Ironman?

I have always enjoyed participating in triathlons and loved the feeling of crossing the finish line at the end of an event. I never thought I was ever good enough to do more than shorter distance triathlon events. The thought of doing anything like a Half, let alone Full Ironman was not on my radar. Luke, my husband, showed me a post where a friend of his had achieved a podium finish in a triathlon. I was inspired, so I set myself a challenge to train for a Half Ironman.

You’re originally from Melbourne and it was Ironman that actually introduced you to Port Macquarie, can you tell us what your first impressions on PMQ and Ironman were like?

As clichéd as it sounds, for me it was love at first sight. I didn’t know much about Port Mac at all before our first visit in 2018. The buzz around town when we arrived during race week was incredible. The temperature was completely different to what we had left behind in Melbourne in May. We were able to swim at the beach here and not freeze. To me, it was paradise.

There was a fair amount of interruption between your first Half Ironman and

competing in the Full Ironman, what’s the story there? What made you want to persevere?

After my second Half Ironman in 2019 here in Port, I set myself a new challenge and committed to do the Full Ironman. With a 3.8km swim, 180km bike ride and a 42.2km marathon run, Ironman is generally considered the toughest one day solo athletic event in the world, and must be completed within the cut off time of 17 hours.

As we know, Covid hit in 2020 and unfortunately, events were cancelled worldwide. Ironman Port Mac ended up being postponed four times due to Covid and floods. There wasn’t much to do in

Melbourne due to the lockdowns and the only thing that helped my mental state was training. I am not a quitter and no matter how long it took to get to the start line of my first Full Ironman, I was going to make it happen.

It took three years from the time I committed to doing it to actually getting to the start line. You couldn’t wipe the smile off my face come race day!

What made you decide to relocate to Port Macquarie? How has your family settled in and what do you enjoy most about the lifestyle here?

Two days before we left Melbourne for our

first trip here, our son Cooper was given a diagnosis that for us as a family was life altering. He was two at the time. We’ve since come to refer to Cooper as having different abilities, but it was tough coming to grips with the journey that lay ahead for him, Luke and I.

We noticed as soon as we arrived in Port on that first holiday that Cooper thrived. It seemed he’d improve in so many areas and was a different kid. He was happy. But then we went home to Melbourne and he withdrew, going back to the way he was.

The education system in Victoria is vastly different to NSW. There are no supported learning classes so Cooper was placed in a mainstream school as he didn’t fit the criteria for a special school. We found out about the schooling system in NSW and made the decision to move, arriving here in January 2023.

We decided on Port because Cooper loved it and it continues to be his happy place - it has been the best decision. Cooper loves school and that makes life easier for us as parents. We love the climate here too. Luke and I are both involved in a local running club, Run Port Mac as well as the tri club. These groups have welcomed us and are so supportive. We feel like we have found our place to belong with our people.

first week is 6 hours total training across the three disciplines. At week 27, I do 20 hours training in that peak week and then spend the last three weeks tapering before race day. Ironman is as much a mental challenge as it is a physical one. What keeps you going when things are getting tough?

I think of the end result. I think about the finish line and what I’ve been through to get there after seven months of training and multiple sacrifices.

Do you ever involve your family in your training or race-day experience, and what do they think of your achievements?

I never thought I would ever do an Ironman and now I am about to do my fourth!! You need to believe in yourself and your ability. Surround yourself with people who will encourage, motivate and help you

achieve your dream.

Luke is my pseudo coach. He writes my program up on a whiteboard each month and encourages me to get out and get the training done. On Ironman day, Luke brings Cooper to briefly run with me which always encourages and motivates me. What advice would you give to others who are dreaming of taking on a challenge like Ironman?

I never thought I would ever do an Ironman and now I am about to do my fourth!! You need to believe in yourself and your ability. Surround yourself with people who will encourage, motivate and help you achieve your dream.

Training for Ironman is a huge commitment. What does a typical training week look like for you in the lead-up to race day?

Training absolutely is a huge commitment and I am thankful that Luke is there behind the scenes supporting me. It provides a platform for friendships to form and discussions around the downsizing journey to be had. Current residents have been down this path and sometimes it’s nice to be able to discuss concerns with someone who has had the same experience. It is also a nice opportunity to share a cuppa, whilst we offer advice and tips on the downsizing journey,”

said Cathy. For Steve and Dianne, the choice to move to Glenfern after 14 years in their family home was a big decision. “We made the decision to downsize due to the size of our land and garden maintenance that was making it difficult to upkeep. Glenfern has the peaceful vibe that we were looking for surrounded by nature and a lovely friendly community feeling. It is one of the many reasons why we chose Glenfern as our future home,” said Steve and Dianne, deposit holders at Glenfern. REFINANCING 101:

Understanding when and why you should consider refinancing your mortgage.

In the ever-evolving landscape of the Australian property market, refinancing your mortgage can be a strategic move that unlocks significant financial benefits. Whether you’re looking to save money, access equity, or change the terms of your loan, understanding the ins and outs of refinancing is crucial. Here’s a comprehensive guide to help you navigate the process, including the advantages and drawbacks of refinancing. Refinancing involves replacing your existing mortgage with a new one, typically to secure better terms. This could mean obtaining a lower interest rate, reducing your monthly repayments, or changing the loan type. Homeowners often consider refinancing when interest rates drop or when their financial situation changes.

When to Consider Refinancing

Lower Interest Rates: If the market interest rates have declined since you took out your original mortgage, refinancing can allow you to secure a lower rate, resulting in lower monthly repayments and less interest paid over the life of the loan.

Improved Credit Score: If your credit score has improved since you first took out your mortgage, you may qualify for better rates and terms. Lenders often offer more favourable conditions to borrowers with higher credit scores.

Changing Financial Circumstances: Life changes such as a new job, an increase in income, or a change in household size can impact your financial situation. Refinancing may

provide an opportunity to adjust your loan to better reflect your current needs.

Accessing Home Equity: If the value of your home has increased significantly, refinancing can allow you to access that equity. This can be useful for funding renovations, consolidating debt, or investing in other opportunities.

Switching Loan Features: You may wish to switch from a variable interest rate to a fixed rate for stability or vice versa if you’re seeking flexibility. Refinancing can give you access to different loan features that better suit your financial goals.

Advantages of Refinancing

Lower Monthly Payments: One of the most significant benefits of refinancing is the potential for reduced monthly payments, which can free up cash for other expenses or savings.

Shorter Loan Term: Refinancing can also allow you to shorten your loan term, potentially saving thousands in interest payments over the life of the loan. However, this may result in higher monthly payments, so consider your budget carefully.

Debt Consolidation: If you have other highinterest debts, refinancing can enable you to consolidate them into your mortgage, typically at a lower interest rate. This can simplify your finances and reduce your overall interest burden.

Access to Better Loan Features: Many modern loans come with features such as offset accounts or redraw facilities that can enhance your financial flexibility and help you manage your

finances more effectively.

Drawbacks of Refinancing

Costs and Fees: Refinancing isn’t free. There may be application fees, exit fees from your current lender, and potentially others like valuation fees or legal costs. It’s essential to calculate whether the savings from a lower interest rate will outweigh these costs.

Potential for Higher Interest Rates: While refinancing can lead to lower rates, it can also result in higher rates if market conditions change or if your creditworthiness has declined. This can negate any intended savings.

Increased loan term: Limitations to your borrowing power may mean that you are required to increase your loan term in order to service. If this is the case and you only make the minimum loan repayments, you may pay more interest over the life of your loan.

Refinancing your mortgage can be a smart financial decision for many homeowners, but it requires careful consideration of your current situation, market conditions, and long-term goals. By weighing the advantages against the drawbacks and thoroughly understanding the costs involved, you can make an informed decision that enhances your financial health. Always consult with a financial advisor or mortgage broker to explore your options and find the best deal tailored to your needs. If you wish to discuss if refinancing is the right option for you jump onto www.farnsworthfinancial. com.au and book a discovery appointment.

Coffee Connections Hits the Road

In the spirit of taking connection to new places - literally, our beloved Coffee Connections networking series is now officially on tour! These casual meetups bring together local professionals in relaxed, welcoming environments designed to spark conversation and community.

April’s Coffee Connections was a standout, hosted by the ever-creative Jacob from Lunico Candle Co. Reflecting on the experience, Jacob shared:

"I just wanted to take a moment to reflect on our coffee catch-up this morning. It was an absolute pleasure to be the first destination for

the travelling coffee catch-ups! The experience felt so comfortable and organic, making it an easy and enjoyable way to network. Being in a familiar space with plenty of natural conversation starters made all the difference. It was great to see some familiar faces, but even more exciting to welcome new ones who hadn’t visited the shop before. Seeing people connect over coffee and conversation was such a highlight!"

Thank you, Jacob, for welcoming us into your space and sharing your signature scents. We loved hearing about your idea to personalise fragrances for local businesses. What a truly unique way to leave a lasting impression.

PORT MACQUARIE MUSEUM

e Port Macquarie Museum recently won bronze at the Australian Tourism Awards, which we think is pre y inspirational for a small volunteer-run organisation! Debbie Sommers spoke to us about the museum, its history and why it’s such an important part of our town.

Hi Debbie, congratulations on receiving a bronze award at the Australian Tourism Awards! What does this national recognition mean for the Port Macquarie Museum and its dedicated team?

Winning the bronze award was an amazing surprise for us, we certainly weren’t expecting it. Winning gold at the NSW Tourism Awards was also unexpected. National recognition means a lot to our museum and our team. It shows that we offer a quality and meaningful cultural experience for visitors and locals, and that our hard work and dedication are highly valued. The award has certainly been a boost for the team.

Can you tell us a little about the museum’s history? When did it begin, and how has it evolved since 1957?

The Port Macquarie Museum began in 1957 initially in a room above the old town library.

As the museum’s collection grew, larger premises were needed and the historic Store building at 22 Clarence Street, our present site, became available. We officially opened here on Easter Monday 1960. Since that time, we have purchased the property, added several building extensions, developed a significant collection, and achieved numerous awards for our museum and tourism work.

For those who haven’t visited before, how would you describe the experience of stepping inside the museum for the first time?

Most people will tell you that stepping into the museum for the first time is surprising. You enter the building through our State significant Store building and into a small foyer. People are expecting to see a small exhibition space and dusty old exhibits. Instead, they will see lots of different gallery spaces, engaging exhibitions, interesting objects and images, and all of them sharing diverse stories about Port Macquarie’s past and contemporary history.

Your collection is impressive, with over 20,000 items and around 2,000 on display at any one time. How do you go about curating and rotating exhibits to keep things fresh and engaging for repeat visitors?

Yes, we have a large collection, and a responsibility to keep it safe and to share it. Each year we change over several exhibition spaces. Our exhibitions are mostly thematic, telling an overall story. Our incredible collection is the inspiration for many of our exhibitions and we often link these to themes associated with statewide events. It is currently the NSW Heritage Festival with a theme of ‘Unearthed’, and we’ve installed a small exhibition ‘Buttons, Bricks & other Bits’ showcasing archaeological remains excavated from several local sites.

Many people might be surprised to learn that the museum is entirely volunteerrun. How vital is the volunteer team to the museum’s day-to-day operations and

long-term success?

History doesn’t stand still and we continue to collect items including those that tell Port Macquarie’s contemporary history because one day that too will be beyond people’s living memory.

We receive no recurrent government funding, so without our volunteer team we couldn’t open our museum to visitors, care for our collections, share local stories, or even pay our bills! In other words, we simply could not exist without them. Having a volunteer work force means it is dynamic and ever changing. Many of our volunteers have worked with us for over 10 years, and our new volunteers bring new insights and fresh ideas. It’s a good mix overall and all our volunteers bring skills and experiences that contribute to our success. We will be celebrating their contributions at a lunch during National Volunteer Week this month. The museum tells the story of Port Macquarie’s transformation from a British penal settlement to a thriving coastal destination. How do you

approach telling such a broad and layered history, and why do you feel it’s important to continue sharing?

We take a thematic approach to storytelling, which enables us to share many layers and stories within a theme. New information is always coming to light as well, and this also impacts how we tell stories and what those stories are. It’s important for us that the history and stories we share are accurate and authentic. History doesn’t stand still and we continue to collect items including those that tell Port Macquarie’s contemporary history because one day that too will be beyond people’s living memory. History records the past, explains the present and informs the future.

Can you share some of the updates and newer ways that visitors can experience the museum and the Port Macquarie area?

Certainly! We are always looking for innovative ways to tell new stories and share Port Macquarie’s history. We recently launched a new exhibition ‘Baryal Bila’ (River Song) which brings Birpai voices and Gathang language into the museum for the very first time. The exhibition focuses

on a poem written and told by Birpai elder Dr. Aunty Rhonda Radley, and explores the history, uses and need to protect the Hastings River. We are also hosting a collaborative exhibition with Port Macquarie U3A fibre artists. ‘Fibre Flair!’ features the artists’ new works alongside the historic items that inspired them. Oh, and we have also just launched a new Historic Places driving tour guide showcasing many iconic and hidden gems around Port Macquarie! We’ve been busy!

How can the local community best support the museum, whether through volunteering, donations, or simply spreading the word?

Thanks for asking that question. We are a community organisation and a tourism business. Our successes are largely due to the support of our local community and we need that to continue to thrive. We are always seeking new members, supporters, and volunteers for a range of roles. Donations help support our work and fund the care of our heritage building and unique collections. Spreading the word is a great way to support us too, as we fund our operations through visitor admission fees. As a community organisation, we also like to give back by participating in community events such as ArtWalk and offering first Sunday free entry during the winter months.

Thanks Debbie.

Marita Dalhaus is the coordinator at Wauchope Regional Arts Project (WRAP); an inclusive arts project designed to connect people with disability with practising professional artists. The program provides participants with access to workshops, performance and exhibition opportunities, and connection and support from the wider community.

WAUCHOPE REGIONAL ARTS PROJECT

Hi Marita, can you tell us how the idea for WRAP first came about?

In 2021 we noticed a lack of visibility, community connection and opportunity in Port Macquarie Hastings for artists with disability. With initial seed funding provided by NDIA and auspiced by Wauchope Community Arts, Wauchope Regional Arts Project (WRAP) –Inclusive Arts was born. I joined shortly after as the Coordinator in a mostly volunteer capacity. WRAP is an initiative which provides people with disability - with an interest in the arts - the opportunity to engage in a range of artistic pursuits in a more meaningful way with professional artists and community peers. Offering weekly performing art workshops and a calendar of visual arts events facilitated by professional practicing artists and mentors leading to public performances, exhibitions and individual opportunities for growth.

WRAP places a strong emphasis on connecting emerging artists with professional mentors. What kind of transformations have you witnessed when those relationships start to flourish?

Linking with professional artists supports active participation in our vibrant, creative community. Through the connections we establish, it

Dahlhaus

provides opportunities and ideas for individuals they would not otherwise have known about or had the confidence to achieve.

Participants gain confidence and skills to represent WRAP; speak on local radio and TV; gain employment and volunteer opportunities; move out of home; take up artist in residencies; participate in large community mural projects and support each other with various life challenges.

To quote some of our participants Kerri, Mathew, Chloe and Chris: “I love the connection WRAP creates with professional performing and visual artists, the community and other participants. I love learning from artists and from each other”, “I am inspired by other members, it’s a non-judgemental environment with like-minded people who inspire me to write music again”, “I enjoy the singing and drama, it’s fun and we have a good coach who teaches us new singing and performing skills”, “The best thing is learning about my emotions and dealing with difficult situations” and “exploring my creative ideas”.

The 1:1 approach in your workshops is quite special. Why is it important to keep participant numbers low, and how does this impact the learning experience?

As the initial idea for WRAP was to provide high quality, professional mentors, it is paramount that we have small groups and the ability to

provide 1-1 mentoring. The approach is driven by participants who state they can learn more effectively, build lasting connections and manage sensory issues with small numbers. It also allows the flexibility to collaborate with different artists, organisations and businesses. Providing 1-1 supports for a range of artistic endeavours allows us not only to promote individual directed learning but also the ability to provide supports for other issues – like Mental Health challenges - that may impact their ability to engage with the community, access services and achieve their dreams.

WRAP has exhibited and performed at places like ArtWalk, Wauchope Gallery, the Wauchope Arts Hall, and even the Nambucca Phoenix Gallery. What do these public showcases mean to the artists involved?

Artists can showcase their skills, celebrate achievements and build their Artist Bio’s. Kerri Cains was a finalist in the 2024 Phoenix Art Prize. Tash Lorenz was a previous Doug Moran Portrait prize semi finalist. These events provide opportunities to grow community connections and confidence, gain new experiences - like speaking publicly on ABC radio, 2 WAYFM and ABC TV – and sell their artworks.

Courtney “l love creating art of various mediums and colour. I have gained means

to express myself through art and form friendships.”

What role do you think the arts play in fostering community inclusion and breaking down social barriers?

Inclusive arts can open the dialogue between the broader community and artists with disability. It eliminates barriers and provides more equal opportunities for everyone, regardless of their differences.

In Matilda’s words: “……… for starters they have provided an inclusive community where so many people, all from different demographics can come together and bond with each other over a similar interest that is, being creative.”

We want to challenge perceived ideas about who is an artist, address barriers of inclusion and raise the profile of artists with disability.

What’s your vision for WRAP over the next few years, any new goals, partnerships, or ideas you’re excited to explore?

The NDIA Peer Support and Capacity Building Grant has given us the opportunity to continue supporting the ideas, dreams, aspirations and vision of artists with disability.

Our focus is the creative and artistic path of individuals, building natural peer supports and capacity via creative exploration of ideas that matter to the individuals and the group.

WRAP is performing and exhibiting at ArtWalk

and Art Trail, creating a new performance piece for Wauchope Arts and is the MNC Hub for the Phoenix Art Prize.

Coming up is a fabulous weaving workshop with local artist Kerry Wheeldon, water colour with Stu Doherty and mixed media with Vivianne Hazenveld.

If you are in Wauchope, check out our community mural project at Wauchope Post Office highlighting the importance of pollinators completed with acclaimed artist Jenny McCracken.

How can members of the local community get involved and support this project?

Attend events, spread the word as we are always looking for emerging artists and professional mentor artists to be part of the project. We would welcome opportunities that support emerging artists showcasing their talents.

Any person with disability interested in visual and/or performing arts who wants to learn from professionals and be part of the project are most welcome to apply. We also run allinclusive Saturday visual arts workshops once a month.

What do you hope participants take away from their time with WRAP, not just as artists, but as members of the wider creative community?

Let’s hear that from the emerging artists - “I gained skills and built confidence I struggled to find anywhere else. Working with WRAP gives me a sense of community. I see a new perspective to approach a blank canvas, learning from others who have different experiences; embracing the art with more depth; it was freeing for the mind, fun and very focused given the small groups.”

“....I have gained much knowledge from doing these workshops and have learnt about new techniques …!”

Finally, anything else you would like people to know?

We currently have a couple of vacant spots in Musical Theatre and we encourage new participants for our visual art workshops. Visual Art Calendar Term 2 is out now. Check out our Facebook and Instagram page for details or contact us directly on 0458 787 019. Preregistration is essential.

As they say “it takes a village” so WRAP is immensely thankful to Wauchope Arts, NDIA and all emerging and professional artists who enable this project to thrive.

EDUCATION UPDATE

ACTING REGIONAL ASSISTANT DIRECTOR, CATHOLIC SCHOOLS OFFICE, HASTINGS REGION

A LETTER TO ALL MOTHERS & MOTHER FIGURES

To our dearest community, families come in many forms, and the role of a mother is often fulfilled by a range of caregivers, including biological mothers, fathers, grandmothers, aunts, older siblings, and other nurturing individuals.

Each of these mother figures brings unique strengths to a child’s life, offering emotional support, stability, and care that contributes to healthy development.

Research from the past decade underscores the positive impact of these varied roles, showing that what matters most is the quality of the caregiving relationship rather than who provides it.

Fathers who take on primary caregiving roles have been shown to support children’s emotional regulation, cognitive growth, and social development, with long-term benefits extending into adulthood.

Similarly, grandmothers, particularly in multigenerational or low-resource households, often provide critical support in areas such as nutrition and early learning, though they may need additional resources to thrive in these roles.

Other caregivers, like aunts or older siblings, also play vital roles by building secure and responsive relationships that foster emotional well-being and resilience in children.

Mothers are selfless, the servant leaders of their families. That's how my children see their mother, as I do of her. They enfold their arms around their children with unconditional love and sacrifice, all for the good of their children.

The month of May in the Catholic Church is the month of Mary, the mother of Jesus. Some religious orders have a special devotion to Mary. They refer to Mary as Our Good Mother. The aim is to emulate Mary's virtues of humility, compassion and faithfulness, living a life of faith, hope and love and serving others with a gentle and nurturing approach. This was exemplified by Mary in her devotion to her son.

Benefits to Children's Lives and Adulthood

The presence of supportive mother figures, regardless of their biological relationship to the child, offers several key benefits:

• Emotional and Social Development: Consistent and nurturing care fosters secure attachments, leading to better emotional regulation and social skills. Children with such support are more likely to develop empathy,

resilience, and positive relationships.

• Cognitive and Academic Achievement: Engaged caregiving is linked to enhanced cognitive development and academic success. Activities such as shared reading and educational play stimulate intellectual growth and a love for learning.

• Long-Term Well-Being: The foundational experiences provided by mother figures have enduring effects, influencing mental health, career success, and the ability to form healthy adult relationships. Positive early caregiving experiences lay the groundwork for a fulfilling and stable adulthood.

The role of a mother can be effectively fulfilled by various individuals within a family structure. Fathers, grandmothers, and other caregivers each bring unique strengths to child-rearing, contributing significantly to a child's immediate well-being and future success.

Recognising and supporting these diverse caregiving roles is essential in fostering environments where children can thrive and develop into well-rounded adults.

Together, as a community, we can ensure our children receive the love and nurturing they all deserve and are entitled to.

In kindness, Peter McLoughlin.

Colour in the card, write your message, and give it to your Mum or Grandmother for Mother’s Day.

Dear

Love always, ,

Thank you for all the hugs, kisses, and all the things you do for me.

Illuminate

with KATE WOOD-FOYE

THE GUTS, GRIT AND GROUNDWORK OF REMARKABLE REGIONAL ENTREPRENEURS, INNOVATORS, LEADERS AND GAME CHANGERS.

Rod has been at the helm of Business NSW MNC since July 2024 delivering key projects to support and advance industry. His desire to see our region thrive is clear using his strategically pragmatic approach to elevate visibility and connect our regions leaders. Strong local connection underpins his work, having raised his children Will, Alice and Evie here. Rod can o en be seen on Lighthouse beach walking the dog or on Lifeguard patrol with partner Sharon.

What was your first thought when you sat in the Regional Director’s chair on the very first day  - how did you envision you would make a difference? Before stepping into this role, I was engaged through Business NSW supporting regional recovery after the Black Summer bushfires, 2021 floods, and the pandemic. So while I’d observed the role I wasn’t

initially sure how to best make a difference. Once I was in the chair though I quickly focused on building a strong team and engaging broadly with businesses and stakeholders to understand their needs and priorities, so we could build a plan and deliver on those priorities. I’ve been grateful for the support and insights of other leaders, like yourself Kate, which have helped me shape a clear direction for Business NSW in this region.

Your journey to the helm of Business NSW has been diverse and rewarding, taking you across the country and the globe in a number of sectors.  Can you share where you started and some of the career experiences that have shaped you as a leader? My journey began right here on the Mid North Coast when my family moved to Wauchope as I started high school. I later received a scholarship to the Royal Military College Duntroon and, despite knowing little about the army, I was drawn by the challenge - and getting paid to study! I completed a Civil Engineering degree and spent 14 years as an Engineer Officer in the Army, leading teams in both combat and construction engineering roles. One of the highlights was a two-year exchange posting with the US Army in Hawaii, an incredible experience, and I also served as a senior instructor at the School of Military Engineering. All of those roles and experiences had a lasting impact on my leadership journey.

ROD BARNABY

On leaving the Army I was able to transfer those skills and experience to business, creating an installation service company supporting Optus’ cable network rollout. What started as a handshake agreement grew rapidly into an organisation of 400 people delivering services to about 7,500 customers weekly across Sydney, Brisbane, and Melbourne. Those that know me will attest that I’m no technical expert, but I learned quickly (and made many mistakes!) and developed a deep understanding of business leadership along the way.

More recently, I’ve served on regional boards including Regional Development Australia, Destination North Coast, Bundaleer Care, and the Hastings Co-op, broadening my experience across diverse industries - and I’ve happily been back in the Port Macquarie now for the last 18 years.

What are the key services that Business NSW delivers to connect and drive change in our region? I see our role at Business NSW is to collaborate with business leaders and stakeholders to provide a collective voice on the issues and priorities that affect businesses in our region. We provide a range of forums and activities for regional leaders to understand and educate ourselves on the issues, and a powerful platform to advocate for change and elevate business performance in the region. We have a strong team to draw on at Business NSW including senior policy advisors, government

relations and media teams and of course our wonderful Chief Economist Sherman Chan who will be back with an Economic Update for us in June.

What has been your most effective tool or attribute as Regional Director that has enabled you to steer the team in a new direction whilst navigating the rapid government and industry changes and developments? I’m lucky to have a broad background that allows me to be equally comfortable engaging with people across all walks of life, from labourers and workers to senior executives and government ministers. I love getting out to meet business owners, understanding their businesses and have a genuine desire to make a difference. I think this helps me engage effectively with a broad range of stakeholders and collaborate effectively in the region to facilitate outcomes and drive change. I also love leading and building a high performing team, which hopefully we are becoming. You have ensured a focus on developing and connecting regional leaders across Port Macquarie and the Mid North Coast - can you share the impact this program is having? Our Regional Leaders program is a higher-level membership with Business NSW for those business leaders and stakeholders with a strategic mindset and commitment to improving regional outcomes. I’m deliberate about inviting the right people into this group, those who

genuinely want to make a difference, and I think we’re starting to build some good momentum. I am also committed to holding events with a clear purpose and outcomes. I’m not into talkfests. I think you’d agree Kate, the recent Technology Summit we co-hosted with some of our regional leaders is a great example, and showed how much impact we can have with this program.

I’m lucky to have a broad background that allows me to be equally comfortable engaging with people across all walks of life, from labourers and workers to senior executives and government ministers.

As a pragmatist with an analytical mind do you subscribe solely to a firm business plan or follow your gut instinct? Probably both. I definitely like to have a plan but I adjust regularly based on instinct, or more correctly probably based on how I’m reading a situation or analysing feedback. I like to remain flexible when implementing a plan!

What has been the most surprising element of your role? While I wasn’t totally surprised, I’ve been genuinely heartened by how willing business leaders and regional stakeholders are to collaborate for the greater good. Despite their own demanding roles, so many of our leaders are committed to working together which gives me real confidence for what we can achieve. Even with the challenges of rising business costs and political and economic uncertainty, there’s

a strong sense of shared purpose and commitment among the leaders I get to work with.

How instrumental have sages and critics been in the evolution of your leadership journey? What is the most valuable lesson they taught you? Well, I’ve received plenty of ‘feedback’ over the years! I’ve been lucky to learn from some outstanding leaders, and also learned a few lessons in what not to do. One of the most valuable lessons came from building our business and competing with large public companies to win multi-million dollar contracts: Don’t obsess over what others are doing. Focus on your own team and do the job to the highest standard. That mindset served us well then and continues to guide me today.

What opportunity, project or collaboration are you most excited about for the future of our region? I’m really excited about ensuring we are an ‘investable region’, which means we need to work on major infrastructure projects, better regional connectivity (airports) and housing, and take advantage of opportunities in key sectors such as the visitor economy and of course health and education.

Thanks Rod.

Teleah Holbert is already making a name for herself in the world of women’s rugby league. From backyard games with her Dad and brother at home here in Wauchope, to li ing the trophy with the North Coast U17s Bulldogs, her passion for footy runs deep. With big dreams of playing NRLW for the Roosters, Teleah is one to watch.

focus interview

Hvarious other sports to deter me, then finally let me play in under 12’s with the boys and the rest is history.

Congratulations on your team’s Grand Final win with the North Coast U17s Bulldogs! Can you take us back to that moment – how did it feel to get the victory?

i Teleah, can you share a bit about your background and how you first got into rugby league?

For as long as I can remember, I have always had a passion for footy. Some of my earliest memories are passing the footy in the backyard with my Dad and brother. My Mum tried to get me to play

at the academy. There is a lot more to rugby league than playing the game itself and I thoroughly enjoyed the various sessions that were on offer. I have come away more knowledgeable and ready to put into play what I have learnt.

Women’s rugby league is growing rapidly. Who are some of the players you look up to, and what do you admire about them?

Having a strong connection within the team and executing the coaches game plan the girls had each other‘s back throughout the season and never gave up.

I don’t think words can adequately describe how it felt… the mission had been accomplished! I was feeling so proud of the girls and the journey we had all been on. What was the key to your team’s success? Were there any standout moments for you personally?

Having a strong connection within the team and executing the coaches game plan the girls had each other‘s back throughout the season and never gave up. Personally, I have various standout moments whether it be watching Keira make a breakthrough down the sideline or Shayla ploughing down the opposition. You were selected for the Emerging Regional Country Women’s Academy, what does this opportunity mean to you, and what did you gain from the experience?

I was very thankful for the experience down

I am currently wearing Ellie Johnston’s old footy boots which she signed for me. Ellie plays for the Sharks and I’ve always followed her story. I admire her determination to get to the top. I also admire local Belinda Anderson, her support and guidance given to me not only as a coach but as a mentor to help me better my game. I also love watching the fire in her belly when she gets on the field. What position do you play, and what do you think are your biggest strengths on the field?

I play second row and my strengths are running hard and tackling hard. I also enjoy putting up a bomb every now and then. The game can be physically and mentally tough, how do you prepare for matches, both in training and in your mindset?

I try to get in the zone without any distractions. It can psych you out when you know you are playing a tough team. I focus on the positives and visualise getting the job done.

You’re still young, but what are your long-term goals in the sport? Do you have dreams or aspirations that you’re working towards?

To play in the NRLW, specifically play for the Roosters as I have followed them my whole life.

Thanks Teleah.

SCAS STUDENTS WIN ASIA-PACIFIC GOIT INNOVATION CHAMPIONSHIP

Two innovative Year 8 students from St Columba Anglican School (SCAS) have claimed first place in the prestigious Australasian GoIT Innovator of the Year Championships. Elizabeth Colle and Eloise Flower beat competing teams from across the Asia-Pacific region with their groundbreaking mobile application design, SCRAPP. Focus caught up with the talented high school students to find out more.

Hand congratulations on your fantastic achievement. Can you tell us a little about your app SCRAPP. What’s it all about and how did you both come up with this creative concept?

Hi Sarah, and thank you for inviting us to share our experience developing our app prototype and for the amazing opportunity SCAS has provided us.

Our app, SCRAPP, is designed to make recycling and waste management easier, smarter, and more engaging for everyone. We noticed that a lot of rubbish was being incorrectly sorted - or worse, left on the ground, so we created a simple, user-friendly solution. SCRAPP helps users identify the correct bin for their waste and, for those feeling creative, offers upcycling ideas to turn rubbish into something new and useful. It’s all about encouraging responsible habits and making sustainability fun and accessible. We’ve really enjoyed combining technology

with environmental awareness, and we’re excited about the positive impact SCRAPP could have in schools and local communities. I understand your award-winning idea was part of SCAS’s Technology Mandatory program which has maintained a six-year partnership with TATA Consultancy Services (TCS) and your app addresses UN Sustainability Goal 12: Responsible Consumption and Production. How does the app seek to provide awareness and a solution based approach to this global issue?

SCRAPP addresses UN Sustainability Goal 12: Responsible Consumption and Production by helping people make smarter choices about how they dispose of their waste.

The app raises awareness by showing users which bin an item belongs in, and it offers creative upcycling ideas to reduce what ends up in landfill. By combining education, technology, and creativity, SCRAPP encourages more responsible habits and provides practical solutions to a growing global issue.

SCRAPP helps users identify the correct bin for their waste and, for those feeling creative, o ers upcycling ideas to turn rubbish into something new and useful.

Yes, our idea was developed through SCAS’s Technology program, which has given us an incredible opportunity to work under their ongoing partnership with TCS.

You will both be representing Australia at the global world finals later this year with the app. Can you tell us a little about what will be involved for this next step?

We are proud and excited to represent Australia in this global competition some time later this year and to prepare for it. We

In 5 to 10 years, I hope to have a degree and be working in a field that blends creativity with innovation—possibly in design, tech, or something I’m still discovering.

have been working very hard on improvement. In the global competition we will be presenting our app to TCS employees around the globe. We have a slideshow and speech prepared but we will be revising and refining the details to continually improve our concept. We'll be enhancing features, building stronger partnerships, and gathering feedback to improve the user experience. It's a big challenge, but we’re ready for it. What hopes do you have for the continued success of the app? How do you see it being used by individuals, within schools and workplaces and who do you identify as gaining the most value from it?

Firstly, we hope SCRAPP moves from concept to reality. We see it being used by individuals to make smarter recycling choices, by schools to teach sustainability from a young age so it becomes a habit rather than inconvenient, and by workplaces to promote waste reduction. Ultimately, we want SCRAPP to empower everyone - from families to communities to adopt more sustainable habits and make a positive environmental impact. Together we can make lasting environmental change and improvement for the planet.

What school subjects are you both most interested in and where do you both see yourselves in 5 to 10 years after completing high-school?

Elizabeth: I’m really interested in technology, maths, english, and textiles because they

let me use both my problem-solving and creative skills. In 5 to 10 years, I hope to have a degree and be working in a field that blends creativity with innovation - possibly in design, tech, or something I’m still discovering. I’m excited to explore different paths and find a career that fits both my passions and strengths.

Eloise: I enjoy both tech and design, so in the future, I hope to work in a field that combines those interests. That said, I also have a strong skill set in maths and enjoy the challenge of solving complex problems, so I’d be just as happy pursuing something in that direction too.

I find it rewarding when I can use logical thinking to come up with innovative solutions, whether that’s through coding, design, or analytical problem-solving. Ultimately, I’m excited by the idea of a career that allows me to be both creative and precise, constantly learning and adapting as technology evolves.

Thank you both.

WHAT LANDLORDS NEED TO KNOW ABOUT THE UPCOMING NSW TENANCY LAW CHANGES

If you’re a property investor in NSW, changes are coming that you’ll want to be across. From 19 May 2025, new tenancy laws will take effect across the state — and they’re some of the biggest updates we’ve seen in years.

These changes, introduced under the Residential Tenancies Amendment (Rental Fairness) Act 2023, are designed to create a more transparent and balanced rental market for both tenants and landlords. While some of the headlines may sound daunting, I want to reassure you: if you’re working with a proactive agency, there’s nothing to fear.

So, what’s changing?

One of the most significant changes is the removal of ‘no grounds’ lease terminations. Moving forward, landlords must provide a valid reason when ending a tenancy. This could include the sale of the property, the landlord or a family member moving in, a serious breach of the agreement, or plans for major renovations.

Notice periods will also change, ranging from 30 to 90 days depending on the reason for termination. This shift is all about increasing certainty for tenants while maintaining fair rights for landlords.

Pets : clearer rules, less confusion

Pet requests have long been a grey area in residential leasing. Under the new laws, tenants can now apply to keep a pet using a standard form. Landlords must respond

within 21 days — and if no response is given, consent is assumed. Refusals will still be allowed, but only on reasonable grounds, such as the property being unsuitable, the pet posing a safety risk, or a high likelihood of damage. The aim is to remove ambiguity and make the process fairer for both parties. Properties will no longer be allowed to state “no pets” on any advertisements.

Rent increases: only once per year

Rent increases will be capped at one per year, regardless of whether the lease is fixed-term or periodic. You’ll still need to provide the usual 60 days’ written notice, and this new rule will apply to all agreements active after the reform date.

No more upfront tenant fees

Under the new rules, landlords and agents will no longer be able to charge tenants for:

• Processing tenancy applications

• Running background or reference checks

• Preparing or signing lease agreements

This change aims to reduce barriers for renters entering the market, particularly those already facing affordability challenges.

Rent payment options must include a feefree choice.

Landlords will now need to offer tenants at least one method of paying rent without additional charges — for example, via direct bank transfer or Centrepay. If you're using a platform that charges processing fees, you

Real Estate

must also provide a fee-free alternative.

What this means for you

While these reforms aim to create a more balanced and transparent rental market, they also bring new responsibilities for landlords that shouldn’t be overlooked. Whether you’re managing your own investment or working with a property manager, it’s never been more important to stay informed and ensure your rental practices are fully compliant. The reality is, keeping up with evolving legislation can be time-consuming — especially when it comes to updating lease agreements, handling tenant communication, managing rent increases, or responding to pet requests within required timeframes. That’s why working with the right property management team can offer real peace of mind. A proactive property manager won’t just protect your investment — they’ll keep you ahead of regulatory changes, handle the admin, and ensure your investment is well looked after.

We’d be happy to talk you through what these changes mean for your property. Feel free to reach out directly — or come into our office and meet with one of our experts.

Regards, Tarym Wright Business Development Manager, Lifestyle.
