At Kado Residences, we’re opening the gateway to a new era in retirement living with a hands-on, personal approach — one that puts people first. Our founders, Mark Bindon, Franco De Pasquale, and Melissa Luck, bring over 20 years of experience in the industry, therefore understanding first-hand the changes required to cater to the evolving needs of today’s retirees.
While many operators have become increasingly corporatised, we wanted something different — something intimate, community-driven, and deeply rooted in relationship. At Kado, we understand the unique needs and preferences of retirees and are committed to delivering high-quality, residentfocused communities and services. That’s why we’ve intentionally designed Kado Residences to be smaller, fostering a sense of comfort and belonging. With just 25 apartments in our first development coming soon to Coffs Harbour, our intimate settings are designed to encourage meaningful interactions, real connections, and a genuine sense of home.
The collective experience of our founders has highlighted the importance of looking beyond a single venture and cultivating deep, lasting partnerships within the broader community. As we prepare to begin construction at our first Kado Residences site on Prince Street and open the doors to our inaugural Kado Wellness Recovery Centre on Orlando Street,
you’ll find the Kado Team hands-on, actively engaged and committed to making a meaningful impact in the local community.
Eventually, our founders plan to be directly involved in the day-to-day experience of our residents, providing support and presence throughout their Kado journey. “This isn’t just a development for us; it’s a community we nurture with empathy, understanding, and an unwavering commitment to exceptional service,” says General Manager Melissa Luck. “Approaching this stage of life ourselves, we know exactly what we expect from a place to call home, and we bring that same standard to Kado.”
“Here, you'll never be just a number — you'll be part of a vibrant environment where connections are meaningful, and every resident feels valued. We believe in good, old-fashioned service, where relationships matter."
Kado Residences is more than just a place to call home—it’s a place to belong, to thrive, and to transition through life’s stages with confidence, comfort, and support.

entrepreneur, proud mum, and now doting grandma. With decades of experience in both conventional and holistic health, Veronica has turned her passion for preventative wellness into Revive IV Wellness, a clinic dedicated to helping others feel vibrant and strong at every stage of life. is Mother’s Day, she shares how motherhood sparked her own health journey and why self-care is one of the greatest gi s we can give ourselves – and those we love.
i Veronica, you’ve worn many hats – emergency nurse, business owner, mum, and now grandma! How has motherhood shaped your approach to both life and wellness? I believe, having worn many different hats throughout my life, that the way I operate daily has developed and changed, especially the more I have researched and learnt about different aspects of health. This is mainly from my own personal trials with illness and injury, peri-menopause, menopause, and my desire to be in a good physical and mental state as I get older, especially since becoming a grandma to two beautiful baby boys. It began when I became a mother. I now had another person I was responsible for, so, if my health wasn’t great then how could I possibly look after the health of a child. After having my daughter, and not feeling good within my body, I made the decision that I didn’t want to be an unhealthy person and if I didn’t change something I would become that. I joined a gym, which was very daunting to me as I hadn’t really exercised since I was a teenager. It was the decision to make this one change which cascaded into a keen interest in health and how we can take control of our bodies and optimise how we feel. So yes, becoming a mother and carer for others was when I made that one decision to better myself. I guess I can thank my children for that. I wanted to be a good example for them so they would learn good habits for themselves and so create a sort of legacy.
So, when it comes to Revive IV services, I wanted to o er people the opportunity to set their own goals towards be er health and to create vitality in their own lives.
Tell us a bit about your journey from nursing to launching Revive IV Wellness. What inspired the leap into the world of holistic health and advanced therapies?
After working as an emergency nurse for 17 years I realised, based on my personal
experiences, that I wanted to focus on helping people take control of their health in a more preventative way. My nursing career gave me much confidence to “look after” people through a very vulnerable experience, however I wanted to reach people before the stage of being hospitalised as I believe they can build resilience and strength to prevent disease and injury. This is why I started exploring the idea of a more holistic approach.
Revive IV is all about balance, vitality, and well-being. What does a “glow-up” mean to you in this stage of your life?
“Glow-up” to me means differentiating between where I was, how much I’ve grown and how I am now. It means that, back then, I set a goal for myself, envisioned it, worked on it and now I’m closer to it. It’s a funny concept to me because when I apply it to health particularly, it’s an ongoing goal. I try
to be better than the last version of better. So, when it comes to Revive IV services, I wanted to offer people the opportunity to set their own goals towards better health and to create vitality in their own lives. Because when we feel vitality, we can do more and be more for those around us, especially when it comes to having energy to run after the grandkiddies.
As someone who’s deeply passionate about health, what are a few wellness habits you swear by?
To keep it simple my answer is adequate hydration, good quality sleep, good nutrition and exercise.
For me it’s all based on longevity and understanding the body and what it needs to prevent inflammation and disease. Finding a good GP, integrative doctor or naturopath, who is all about improving your journey and life is essential.

You offer everything from IV vitamin therapy to hot/cold immersion, oxygen therapy, and red-light treatments – can you give us a quick overview of what each does and why women in particular love them?
Here are the therapies on offer at Revive IV Wellness. I believe women particularly love them because they support the body in a way which helps to reduce inflammation, produce energy, aid with more restful sleep and improve mood – which I can understand is much needed by all mothers. There is also the benefit of a more youthful and fresh appearance of the skin, because let’s face it, we don’t just want to feel great but look great too.
IV Vitamin Therapy offers a direct route for vitamins and minerals to enter the bloodstream, ensuring 100% absorption. This method bypasses the digestive system, providing potential benefits such as enhanced energy levels, improved immune function, and faster recovery times.
Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT)
HBOT involves breathing pure oxygen in a pressurized chamber, which significantly increases oxygen concentration in the blood, thereby accelerating the repair and regeneration of damaged tissues. This therapy is important in treating sports injuries, reducing inflammation,
and enhancing recovery speed.
Red Light Therapy offers low-level wavelengths of red light. This therapy stimulates cellular repair
and increases circulation, contributing to faster muscle recovery and reduced inflammation. Its ability to penetrate deep into tissues makes it an effective non-invasive treatment for muscle fatigue, joint pain, and even skin conditions.
PEMF Therapy.
This therapy uses electromagnetic fields to stimulate the body's natural healing processes. By enhancing cellular function and promoting the body's recovery mechanisms, this therapy can lead to improved performance, reduced pain and inflammation, and quicker recovery from injuries.
By enhancing cellular function and promoting the body’s recovery mechanisms, this therapy can lead to improved performance, reduced pain and inflammation, and quicker recovery from injuries.
Hot and Cold Therapy (Contrast Therapy). The application of hot temperatures improves circulation and relaxes muscles, while cold therapy reduces inflammation and lessens pain. Alternating between hot and cold
(contrast therapy) can significantly enhance recovery by stimulating blood flow and aiding in the removal of toxins from the muscles.

the day and week. I believe if you really want to do something you create the time to do it.
My husband and I work together on our health and have set goals as a group. This is an essential step to my success. We plan and prepare on a weekly basis to ensure we stay on track. So, when it comes to staying connected to family and prioritising my health it goes hand in hand. Finally, what’s your message to all mums and grandmothers out there this Mother’s Day who are ready to feel strong, vibrant, and empowered again?
My message to all mums and grandmothers for Mother’s Day is that we all deserve to feel and look our best, after all, if it wasn’t for women being mothers we would die as a human race. I encourage women to put self-care first. I know when I did that all those years ago it only benefited my children, as they had a happier mum with energy and life to be present for them. It's such a worthwhile investment.
I am always happy to help anyone who would like to improve their health, whether just starting out or wanting to improve their existing health. Feel free to pop into the clinic for a free consultation or give us a call.
Kristy Hart has been one of the community members involved in bringing back the Gumbaynggirr Co s Coast Raiders Rugby Team, to play in e Koori Knockout event two years ago. eir hope is to be able to continue competing and bringing community together, honouring her father and the original team who represented the Gumbaynggirr nation in the 1990’s.
Hi Kristy. The Gumbaynggirr Coffs Coast Raiders started back in the 1990’s, can you tell us a bit about your connection to the GCCR and what inspired you to help bring the team back?
My connection to the Gumbaynggirr Coffs Coast Raiders is through my father Rod Hart. In the mid-80’s he and his brothers, Uncle Larry and Uncle Tony, with the support of local men in the community, were the founders of the Gumbaynggirr Coffs Coast Raiders. They were keen to start a rugby team to represent the Coffs Harbour Indigenous Community at the Koori Knockout.
I know personally that my father, along with the other founders, knew how sport and team spirit didn’t just support people physically, but it supported their mental health and
wellbeing. Community members who engaged with this team felt connected.
It was their enthusiasm and their perseverance in bringing this community together to support each other and the stories they shared that inspired not only myself, but also children of the original Raiders team who helped in supporting to bring this team back.
My father along with the other founders knew how sport and team spirit didn’t just support people physically, but it supported their mental health and wellbeing.
of it again?
Over the years I heard so many stories about the Coffs Raiders Team that when Heather Duncan approached me and said we should rebuild the team, it naturally made sense to form the Gumbaynggirr Coffs Coast Raiders. The Koori Knockout is a massive event. What makes it so special, and why was it important for your community to be part
All I can say is that it is special because it gives us the opportunity to be a part of an event that brings together several Aboriginal nations throughout NSW and highlights community spirit. It showcases Aboriginal skills and resilience and is important and worthwhile to whole communities and we feel the time is right for the Gumbaynggirr nation to be a part of this event again. It gives the Gumbaynggirr nation representation and allows the community and team to work towards something meaningful.
Taking five teams to Tuggerah two years ago, including women’s and junior sides, was a huge achievement, how did the community come together to make that
happen with limited resources?
The commitment of our committee members
Heather Duncan, Bianca Morris, Cameron Blair and Tarra Craig made this happen through fundraising, chasing sponsors and raising awareness of the team. It took countless hours but it was well worth the effort to see the outcomes of this.
We envision a team that consistently competes at a high level, achieving both individual and team accolades not only for the Koori Knock-Out but other sporting events.
What was the experience like for the young players who got to represent their mob at the Koori Knockout? Were there any standout moments that really stuck with you?
The experience of our youth to represent not only their community, but also their grandfathers that played in the original team in the mid 1980’s, some of whom have now passed, was the proudest moment for them. One particular moment was when an under 15’s player's father came up to one of our committee members in tears and thanked her for putting in a team for his daughter. It was his proudest moment to see his daughter wearing a Gumbaynggirr jersey representing his hometown.
How has the return of the GCCR helped reconnect and strengthen the local Gumbaynggirr community, especially among youth?
The return of the GCCR has positively impacted the Gumbaynggirr community in several ways, particularly among the youth. For example, we collaborated on a touch football team, golf programs, NAIDOC Week fun day and also created a women’s program. These initiatives have fostered a stronger sense of identity and belonging among young people, leading to positive outcomes. The GCCR’s return has been instrumental in reconnecting and strengthening the Gumbaynggirr community, especially its youth by achieving their goals.
You’ve got some eager participants again this year, what are some of the challenges the Raiders are facing now as you start planning for the Koori Knockout? What kind of support does the team need from the wider community to keep this initiative growing?
The challenges are funding, volunteer recruitment, financial contribution, promotional efforts, and community partnership. With community support it can be a positive force for GCCR to be proud of. For Gumbaynggirr kids coming through now, what message do you hope to send about pride, resilience, and community?
The Gumbaynggirr Coffs Coast Raiders aim to instil values of pride in their cultural heritage, resilience in overcoming challenges, and a strong sense of community belonging.
What’s your vision for the Gumbaynggirr Coffs Coast Raiders? Where would you love to see the team five years from now?
Our vision for the Gumbaynggirr Coffs Coast Raiders in five years is one of sustained growth and success, both on and off the field. We envision a team that consistently competes at a high level, achieving both individual and team accolades not only for the Koori Knock-Out but other sporting events. This success will be built on a strong foundation of community engagement and support. Specifically, I’d like to see men’s, women’s and youth programs, strong partnerships with local businesses and organisations that would further enhance the GCCR visibility and continue to have positive outcomes for this community.
Thanks Kristy.

Hi Debbie. Can you share a little about how you first came to join the Breast Cancer Buddies group, and what it meant to you at that time?
I found a brochure for the “Breast Cancer Buddies” Support Group whilst I was twiddling my thumbs waiting for the BreastScreen Nurse from Port Macquarie (at the time) to come into the room at the Coffs Harbour BreastScreen NSW Unit.
Having been “called back” to the Assessment Clinic on that day, I had a few procedures during that afternoon and I just knew that I would be needing support from a Breast Cancer Group. Call it my sixth sense!
The group has been running since 1996, which is an incredible legacy of care. Can you tell us about how the group is run and what it offers?
The Group Coordinator, Di Holt, is usually your first contact by phone. Di is such a positive, knowledgeable lady. The support group meets on the first Tuesday of every month, at Shearwater Lodge (on the Coffs Health Campus) to have a cuppa and a biscuit, in an encouraging, supportive, confidential, safe and friendly environment. At the meetings, there is a qualified guest
Debbie Lane discovered the Breast Cancer Buddies support group early in her journey with breast cancer and has found it has had a hugely positive impact on her experience over the years. She would like to share with the community what the group is all about and make sure those who may benefit from the group know where to find them!
speaker sharing their knowledge relating to a particular breast cancer topic. Topics include, but are not limited to, updates on the latest breast cancer research and treatments, trials and podcasts etc.
You can participate as much or as little as you like at the meetings, and it’s the same with attendance - you can join the group as much or as little as you wish.
The group is a free space where you can share with others who have had a breast cancer diagnosis.
The group adds a special dimension to the support of family, friends and a person’s medical team.
The group is focused on listening to each other, so that we feel that we are not alone in our journey.
breast cancer “buddies” nor is it a “Ladies Only” group! We are all at different stages of our “journeys”; experienced different diagnosis (i.e. type of breast cancer); going through different treatment options and at different stages of our recovery.
e group is a free space where you can share with others who have had a breast cancer diagnosis. e group adds a special dimension to the support of family, friends and a person’s medical team.
For someone newly diagnosed, walking into that first meeting might feel overwhelming. What might a newcomer expect and how does the group help people to feel welcome and supported? The group isn’t just for newly diagnosed
Often Jane Kelly, Specialist Breast Care Nurse (who is a ray of sunshine and a McGrath Foundation Nurse) is present at our meetings; as is Di, our Coordinator. You probably have spoken to Jane or Di before a meeting, so you will probably know at least one person present.
The group includes people at all stages on their journey with breast cancer. How does that range of experience enrich the conversations and support shared in the group?
The experience of the group is so valuable and our meetings are very informative and uplifting.
We support, listen and learn. There is no limit to the knowledge available and advice as
to where to obtain free resources or further information.
We are also affiliated with BCNA (Breast Cancer Network Australia) and Cancer Council. We know lots of affiliated services but are not limited to this as knowledge is ever changing and evolving!
Meetings seem to strike a beautiful balance - laughter, learning, and genuine connection. What are some of your favourite memories or moments from your time in the group?
Always how supportive and friendly everyone is! I get a lot from hearing about the journey of others and I can tell you there are many amazing women who have done all sorts of amazing things. They are humble and completely inspirational!
The emotional support you get from this group is inspirational in itself!!
Guest speakers play a big role in the meetings too. What are some examples of the kinds of speakers who attend and what have been some of the most useful or inspiring things you've learned from them?
Gee, I can’t choose because I have such a thirst for information!
Every guest speaker at our monthly meeting is a professional in the topic being discussed.
They work in that particular field on a day-today basis.
Some are from, or connected with, the Mid North Coast Cancer Institute Unit (MNCCI). Some are from adjunctive (additional) therapies that can assist participants to manage the effects of their treatment/s; whilst others can update you with what’s available in breast prostheses, swimwear, underwear, makeup and wigs.
You also take part in public events like Australia’s Biggest Morning Tea. Can you tell us about what you have coming up and how the broader community can get involved?
Yes, our next big event is the Cancer Council’s “Biggest Morning Tea”.
This will be conducted on Wednesday 21st May at the Botanic Gardens, Cnr Hardacre & Coffs Streets in Coffs Harbour, between 10am and 12 noon. Should we receive even more rain, the event can still take place under cover at this location.
All the community is welcome.
We ask for a gold coin donation for entry and then you can enjoy our hospitality with entertainment, raffles, lucky door prizes and some home-cooked treats.
Our raffles and lucky door prizes have been generously donated by various local
businesses and shopping centres.
For someone reading this who may be recently diagnosed and unsure about joining a support group, what would you like them to know?
I would like them to know that the “Breast Cancer Buddies” are here for them, whether you are male or female.
We understand how you may be feeling, having been there ourselves.
You do not have to walk this journey alone or hide your feelings or be brave for us. There is no judgement and no expectations, just support and friendship.
Where can we find out more or get in touch?
You can contact Di Holt on 0423 336 048 or dholt007@internode.on.net; Jane Kelly on 0438 696 115 or jane.kelly@health.nsw.gov. au or myself, Deb Lane on 0411 152 517 or breastcancerbuddies@hotmail.com.
Look for our pink brochures at your local GP Practice, Dr Salindera’s Practice, Womens’ Health Centres and Practices, X-Ray & Radiology Practices, Oncology Reception areas at MNCCI, some chemists and local cafes. Thanks Debbie.
Since opening its doors in 2018, Pete’s Place in Coffs Harbour has become a lifeline for people experiencing homelessness or housing insecurity. What began as a simple idea to provide showers and laundry facilities has grown into a dynamic engagement hub offering meals, support services, and a sense of belonging.
Can you tell us a little about how Pete’s Place first came to be, and the story behind its name?
Pete’s Place is a great example of a community project.
In 2016 South Coffs Rotary (now non operational) approached the Coffs Harbour Neighbourhood Centre and asked if there was something they could do to support homelessness. An interagency had been established, ‘Coffs Essentials’, where this issue was being discussed and primarily the lack of hygiene facilities for those sleeping rough. The idea was born from here. St Vincent De Paul agreed to take carriage of the operations and the original laundry and shower facility was built with Coffs South Rotary project managing the build and successfully securing an infrastructure grant from Coffs Harbour City Council.
St Vincent de Paul St Augustine’s Conference contributed startup funds left to them through a bequest from a man named Peter Grealy. This is where the service got its name.
What were some of the original goals when Pete’s Place opened back in 2018 and how have those goals evolved over time?
Originally Pete’s Place was developed to respond to emerging food and hygiene needs for people experiencing homelessness. The original idea was for staff to make referrals to external services for other needs. What became apparent within the first few years of opening was both the increasing prevalence of homelessness and the barriers people were experiencing in accessing wrap around support. Pete’s Place became a place of safety for a really vulnerable cohort in our community. We realised we needed to meet people in a way and in a space that felt safe to
them. We listened to the people that attended our service; they told us the services they felt they needed and then we worked with the sector to bring them in.
The increase in daily clients is pretty staggering. What does that say about the current state of homelessness in our region?
In the first year of opening Pete’s Place saw 10-20 people a day. That number has risen to between 90-120 per day. Given Pete’s Place is only open for a five hour period we have had to continue to be agile and creative in managing the demand.
Coffs Harbour is such a beautiful part of the world, but the compounding effects of natural disasters, cost of living increases, COVID and the impact that has had on housing prices and availability; along with a lack of social and affordable housing has placed so many people in our community in a tenuous
position. Housing is a basic human right, it's devastating to see the sharp increase in people needing our support.
What are the most common reasons people are accessing Pete’s Place right now? Has the client demographic changed at all over the past few years?
Issues relating to homelessness or housing insecurity continue to be the reason people access our support. This is such a multifaceted issue though, there are people seeking food so they can pay rent, people seeking medical assistance to mitigate the causes or consequences of homelessness, people seeking support with pet care or employment or legal issues. We respond to whatever needs people have, but at their core all these things are interrelated.
We have seen an increase in people who are at risk of homelessness and a large part of the work we do now is helping people retain their tenancies in an attempt to stop them moving into homelessness. We also see more families, older Australians and people with a disability than we did a few years ago.
You’ve expanded into an engagement hub offering wrap-around support. What does this involve, and how is it making a difference?
We view our engagement hub as an alternative and complementary point of entry into support systems. Pete’s Place is focused on social inclusion, addressing social determinants of health and housing support. In its simplest form this is achieved through meals, access to showers and laundries, being known by name and part of a community. This soft entry approach is overlaid with our skilled staff who can provide specialised support, and importantly our partners who allow an integrated and responsive spectrum of specialised services.
The expansion into this model has made an enormous difference, it’s a great example of systems change in action.
It’s impressive that services like Galambila, Women’s Health, Mental Health, Centrelink, and a GP are all part of the weekly schedule. How important is this co-location of services for your clients?
We have seen an increase in people who are at risk of homelessness and a large part of the work we do now is helping people retain their tenancies in an attempt to stop them moving into homelessness.
Co-location and integrated service delivery are key to the success of Pete’s Place. To provide a coordinated, safe and accessible response to holistic support really is best practice.
We understand that sometimes the biggest barrier to people accessing support is navigating systems. This is especially relevant for people who already feel disconnected and marginalised. A joined-up service system is vital. This model fosters collaboration, streamlines support and empowers the people that attend Pete’s Place to make choices about their care networks. Our incredible partners work with us to address both crisis situations and long term wellbeing with a broad range of expertise.
What are some of the biggest challenges your team faces in providing support to
people who are homeless or at risk of homelessness?
The resources do not meet the demand. There is a lack of affordable housing, services across all sectors are stretched to capacity, and we are no exception. As an unfunded service we continuously face the tension between supporting everyone who comes to our door and needing to make decisions based on financial limitations.
Pete’s Place relies heavily on volunteers and donations. How vital is community support to keep the service running dayto-day?
Pete's Place receives no Government funding and we could not do the work we do without the help of our generous community. We rely on volunteers to assist us in the day to day running of the service, food donations to ensure no one goes hungry and financial donations to respond to crisis.
For someone who wants to get involved—whether through volunteering or donating—what’s the best way to help?
People give in many ways, we love having visitors and showing you around a space we are really proud of. Often that visit will allow someone to understand how they can best help- if it's time, or goods or money, or just learning and becoming a voice for change.
Thanks Opal.

As part of our 30-year celebration, we continued our 30 Acts of Kindness initiative honouring our history while inspiring the next generation. Each act has been a small but meaningful reminder of the strong, supportive community we’ve built together.
Throughout the year, we’ve focused on kindness as a core value of our service and a foundation for the kind of people we hope our children will become. In the rooms, children explored what kindness meant to them through discussions, role play, and storytelling inspired by everyday experiences. Their voices and expressions were captured in photos and displayed, offering a powerful reminder of the values we share.
In our foyer, we introduced a Kindness Chart, a living display of the kind acts taking place across our service. This included our first community pyjama donation, a generous family contributing pots and pans for our mud kitchen, and a group of children going on an excursion to buy books for the service. Each gesture, whether big or small, was acknowledged and celebrated, showing children how kindness can ripple through a
community.
To continue these lessons at home, families received Kindness Calendars filled with simple daily suggestions, like sharing a compliment or helping with a chore. These activities encouraged meaningful family conversations and reinforced that kindness is a habit as well as a value.
We also introduced a Thankful Jar in the foyer, inviting families to leave notes of appreciation for the service and educators. These heartfelt messages uplifted our team and reminded us all of the power of gratitude.
community to donate items, with drop-offs welcome between 7:30am and 4:00pm daily.
Each gesture, whether big or small, was acknowledged and celebrated, showing children how kindness can ripple through a community.
We believe it’s important that our acts of kindness extend into the broader community. From donations to outreach projects, our children are learning that even small acts can make a big difference. Whether it’s planting trees or helping someone in need, they’re building a sense of responsibility and care for others.
Looking ahead, we are preparing for a Mother’s Day Hygiene Kit drive in May, where we’ll collect essential items to create care packs for our local women’s refuge. This initiative is another way for our service to reach beyond our walls and support those in need. We invite families and the wider
Through these experiences, we hope to nurture empathy, compassion, and social responsibility. The children in our care today will shape the world tomorrow, and by giving them chances to practise kindness now, we’re helping grow a generation of thoughtful, compassionate citizens.
Here’s to 30 years of connection, care, and community, and to many more to come.

What can visitors expect to find at Yarrila Arts and Museum? YAM presents a vibrant and dynamic program of contemporary art and social history exhibitions across five galleries, and, significantly curated major touring exhibitions bringing some of Australia’s most exciting artists to the region. Visitors can engage with exhibitions and artists through a range of artist talks, tours, events, artmaking workshops and free family activities. Yaamanga (around here), is a permanent interactive exhibition that explores the history and identity of the Coffs Coast through a captivating display of objects, artworks, and stories. The centrepiece is Daalga Nginundi Wajaarr (Sing Your Country) which was developed with local Gumbaynggirr people. How do you support artists from the Coffs Coast? YAM is committed to supporting artists from the Coffs Coast area through exhibitions, professional opportunities and art awards. We are currently calling for expressions of interest for Coffs Coast artists to exhibit at YAM in 2026, so it’s an exciting time for local artists. We have also just announced the new Coffs Coast Artist Award as part of our biennial art award STILL: National Still Life Award. The YAM
Shop also supports the work of artists, designers and makers from our region with a range of jewellery, objects and homewares available. How is YAM supporting the next generation of artists and creatives? YAM has a free annual program for under 25s – YAM Young Creatives, for young people interested in a career in the creative industries, getting skills and meeting artists. Later this year YAM will launch the new annual exhibition Yearbook ’25: HSC Visual Art Students from the Coffs Coast. We also provide education tours for schools all year round which includes guided tours and artmaking.
What programs do you offer for families?
Blending past and present with creative flair, Yarrila Arts and Museum (YAM) is making its mark as the cultural canvas of Coffs Harbour. Situated on Gumbaynggirr Country in the centre of Coffs Harbour, YAM is a unique destination for audiences of all ages and abilities to experience and engage with art, culture and history. We spoke with Carrie Kibbler who leads YAM and asked her what is happening over the next 12 months and how visitors can engage with exhibitions and artists.
What’s currently on at YAM? Our current exhibitions include Material World which brings together a diverse group of leading Australian artists that explore the role of textiles in contemporary practice. Eco-symbiosis, is a group exhibition featuring the work of four Mid North Coast artists delving into the intricate relationship between humans and their environment which closes on Sunday 1 June.
We’re currently calling for expressions of interest for Coffs Coast artists to exhibit at YAM in 2026 so it’s an exciting time for local artists.
Families can pick up a free art trail for Yaamanga (around here) and take part in self-guided art making activities in The Workshop. Every Friday during school term, families can join us for our free program, Teeny Tours, for under 5s. During the school holidays we have free and paid holiday workshops and in September YAM and Coffs Harbour Libraries host the free Spring Family Day at Yarrila Place.
What do you have coming up next? We have a super exciting and jam-packed program planned for the next year. This June we will be launching a joint exhibition by Patricia Piccinini and Caroline Rothwell alongside an interactive video work by international mega art stars team Lab. STILL: National Still Life Award 2025 will open in September and then over summer visitors can experience the immersive exhibitions ESSSENSSSE by Hossei and CREATION by Deborah Kelly. Next year we will be hosting a special international touring exhibition – I can’t give too much away…but the hint is that it will feature lots of tiny yellow people – which will be followed by the Archibald Prize 2025.

You feel it, right? ere’s a buzz in the heart of Co s. Laneways that once blended into the background are now bursting with colour, creativity and life. Murals, street art and creative installations are popping up everywhere — changing how we see the City Centre.
But this isn’t just a coat of paint. It’s a new way to connect with the stories, artists and energy that make our city unique.
At the heart of it all is the City Centre Street Art Trail — a free, self-guided walking experience celebrating the creative spirit of Coffs Harbour. More than just a discovery walk, the trail is a love letter to culture, community and place.
Each artwork has its own story - some honour the region’s deep cultural roots, including stunning large-scale works that pay tribute to Gumbaynggirr Country. Others are playful, abstract or bold — pieces that make you stop, smile or think. Together, they create a colourful, connected portrait of our community.
And if you want a little help navigating, download the free Coffs Coast Explorer App It maps the full Street Art Trail and highlights places to eat, drink, shop and explore — your own pocket-sized local guide.
Don’t miss standout works like Mulga’s Wendell the Whale – featuring animals in sunglasses cruising on Vespas, soaking up the Coffs Coast vibe; Beautiful Lady with Purple Hair by Melbourne artist Tayla Broekman –
known for painting illustrative human and animal characters, and Jarad Danby’s full-wall mural of Lech Wałesa in the King Tide Brewery. While this immersive tour is sure to spark your imagination, it’s not just about the art. The trail winds through the City’s beating heart — past cafés, arcades, independent boutiques and tucked-away laneways. As you follow it, you might pause for a perfectly brewed coffee, step into a local shop you’ve always passed by, or discover a hidden gem you never knew existed. With every mural, every step, every sip and stop, you help support local businesses, while enjoying great food, discovering new creative spaces, and experiencing one-of-a-kind shopping on the Coffs Coast.
But the City of Coffs' art experiences go well beyond the walk. In the heart of town, Yarrila Arts and Museum (YAM) is currently presenting Material World — a thoughtprovoking exhibition showcasing a diverse group of Australian artists exploring the role of textiles in contemporary art.
Just nearby, the Saltwater Freshwater Gallery celebrates the work of Aboriginal artists from across the Mid-North Coast’s Saltwater Freshwater region, including creators
from the Worimi, Biripi, Dunghutti and Gumbaynggirr nations, and don’t miss the ever-colourful Kaleidoscope or the vibrant Laneway Gallery — there’s inspiration to be found both indoors and out.
Coffs City Centre is changing. Public art is transforming the face of the CBD, turning laneways, walls, and public spaces into a free outdoor gallery for all to enjoy - fast becoming a regional street art bucket list destination. So why not spend a day rediscovering your own backyard with friends, family or on your own? Take a slow stroll. Look up. Wander into that little shop you’ve never been in to. Grab lunch somewhere new. Let the trail lead you — or better yet, get a little lost.
That’s the magic of the Coffs City Centre Street Art Trail. It invites you to immerse yourself in the arts scene, soak it in, support local and see your city in a whole new light. The heart of Coffs is alive with creativity.
So, lace up, head in and experience it for yourself!

Hi Aly, can you share a bit about the concept for the new Laneway Gallery?
The idea behind Laneway Gallery is to create a space dedicated to showcasing alternative and contemporary art, design and illustration. We’re lucky to have a strong network of community and volunteer-run galleries here on the Mid North Coast - they’re such vital spaces for people to share their work, and I’m an active member of a few myself!
That said, what I’ve noticed is a bit of a gap when it comes to curated spaces that focus on a specific aesthetic and calibre of workparticularly in regional areas. The Laneway Gallery aims to fill that gap with opportunities to sell unique art and affordable fine art prints, and is your go-to for local handmade frames crafted from reclaimed Coffs Harbour hardwood.
I’m really passionate about the weird and wonderful - art that’s bold, high-quality,
Tucked down a vibrant laneway in the heart of Co s Harbour, Laneway Gallery is the newest creative space brought to life by local artist and curator Alyson Pearson. Known for her bold aesthetic and community-driven events, Aly’s latest venture is a celebration of alternative and contemporary art. We caught up with her to hear more about the vision behind the gallery, the friendships that fuel it, and what’s coming next for this exciting new space.
and a little outside the box. I hope to bring something fresh to the local scene, complementing what’s already here while carving out a distinct niche.
This has been a collaborative project, who has been involved in bringing the dream to life?
I’m still close with Mila Nascimentto, who took over the gallery when I passed the keys on in 2023. She’s been part of this next transition too and is now focusing on her new venture with our amazing laneway neighbours at Venus Tattoo.
Whether you’ve moved away and come back, or you’ve been drawn here by the lifestyle, there’s a shared curiousness for that feeling.
One of the biggest takeaways from running Alykat Gallery was learning to share the load—not just financially, but creatively and emotionally. So when my friend Kelly from Lemon Street suggested
we share the space, it felt like the perfect fit. We’re both passionate about small business and design, and often end up at the same events and workshops. While we operate as separate businesses under one roof, I won’t lie - having a friend whose speciality is branding and marketing is my kind of friend-with-benefits! I’m so grateful for Kel and her generous strategic brain. She also helps with openings and receiving artwork during the week while I focus on evenings and weekends.
You’re passionate about supporting regional artists.
As someone with a creative background yourself, how important is it to have a local space to exhibit and connect?
As a colourful, creative person who spent
much of my life in Melbourne and London, I got used to stumbling across bold concept stores and quirky little galleries showing the strangest, most wonderful creations. That sense of, “Whoa, I’m not alone in this creative world,” was so validating - those kinds of spaces make me feel happy and whole. Since moving back to my hometown in Coffs, I’ve been pleasantly surprised by how many like-minded creatives are here. Whether you’ve moved away and come back, or you’ve been drawn here by the lifestyle, there’s a shared curiousness for that feeling. Creating a space that sparks that same feeling I’d get in a Shoreditch pop-up or soaking up the vibes in Collingwood just feels necessary - I guess it’s about bringing that inspiration home. Your exhibition openings are becoming known for their energy and community feel. What do you love most about those launch events?
I remember coming out of Covid, when everyone was feeling a bit flat, and I organised a big group exhibition to give artists something positive to focus on. The opening night was huge! Pablo Blitzer busting out on the sax, people dancing in the laneway, and I had folks thanking me for putting it on. It was one of those pinch-me-moments.
Gallery images by James Lander Photography
I know I couldn’t pull off these big, vibrant launches without the capable, generous people around me. But they often tell me that I’m the one who brings everyone together and sets the vision—and I guess that’s my role in it all. It’s an incredible feeling to watch people enjoy something you’ve poured your heart into.
Can you give us some hints about upcoming exhibitions, projects or events you might have in the works?
OoOo yes—I’m right in the thick of finalising the program for the rest of 2025, and let’s just say, I’ve got some big topics lined up. Since my Mum passed away at the end of last year, there’ve been a lot of sad, awkward, and deeply honest conversations around death. I also work with seniors at the Coffs Libraries, where loss is a very real part of life, and I’ve become fascinated by how little we talk about dying, despite it touching all of us.
So I’m planning to have that conversation in the best way I know how - by curating a kick-arse show exploring all aspects of death. I’d like to draw some inspiration from Mexico’s Día de los Muertos, which celebrates death with colour, music, and remembrance. Then, as we head into spring, the gallery will flip to focus on life and joy—a full-circle kind of
journey. And of course, we’ve got Aus Music Month coming up in November too, which is always a vibe!
How do you see Laneway Gallery evolving in the years to come? Are there any big dreams still on the horizon?
I’d love to keep growing the gallery as a space that supports fellow artists, helping others turn their work into something tangible and sellable is something I really enjoy.
We’re also soft-launching something a bit different this week: Tiny Gallery Sessions.
It’s an intimate gig series where we invite musicians to play stripped-back sets in the gallery space. It’s all about slowing down during the cooler months, soaking up live music, and immersing yourself in a room full of art—low-key and cosy with a creative twist.
So yep, definitely dreams a-plenty on the horizon!
Where can we stay up to date on what’s happening at Laneway Gallery, or get in touch?
You can now peruse the exhibitions at our online shop and definitely follow our socials for up-to-date happenings.

Daniel Dootson is a proud Gumbaynggirr artist who recently completed a collaborative project with Garby Elders Aboriginal Corporation, local school students, and the National Aboriginal Design Agency to create artworks that are now displayed on the Garby Elders vehicle and gazebo.
Hi Daniel, can you tell us a little about your background and where your journey as an artist began?
Giinagay! My name is Daniel Dootson, I am a proud Gumbaynggirr man! I was born and raised in Coffs Harbour and lived most of my younger years there, but as a young teenager I made my way back to Corindi Beach, to my mother’s land.
I always had a passion for art at a very young age, but started having a go at it when I was about 13 or so years old. I remember seeing all these beautiful artworks done by this old Aboriginal lady in this magazine when I was in Year 7 and that inspired me to pick up a brush and start creating my own pieces.
How does your Gumbaynggirr heritage influence your creative process and the kinds of stories you choose to share through your art?
My Gumbaynggirr heritage is everything to me and my artwork. Every single canvas I have ever created has something to do with the ocean as that’s my people's totem. I have a very strong and deep connection with our ocean and you will always see that throughout my artwork. Out here in Corindi Beach on our Northern Gumbaynggirr lands is where all my inspiration comes from. I like to sit down out here where all my old Elders were born and once lived down here behind the sand dunes
and really tune in with them and just sit and listen. It’s a really special thing for me.
You recently worked with the Garby Elders Aboriginal Corporation, school students, and the National Aboriginal Design Agency to create artworks for the new Elders tent and vehicle. What was it like being part of that project?
Garby Elders are very passionate about family, respect, culture and community and I think that has been put on display throughout the artworks from the students and myself.
Working with the Garby Elders, Saltwater Freshwater Arts and NADA was a great experience. They are very professional in their respective roles.
With the Garby Elders truck and gazebo,
it was an honour working alongside Aunty Deb Dootson and Tony Dootson from the Garby Elders and the stories they told students from 5 different schools being Corindi Public, Mullaway Public, Woolgoolga High, Woolgoolga Public and Sandy Beach Public. Once the children completed their concepts of the stories, told through their own artwork, I was then asked to choose pieces from the kids art to incorporate into the final work which is now shown on the truck and gazebo. I feel very proud to be a part of something
very important that shares the stories of our culture, family and home.
What role did cultural storytelling from Aunty Deb and Tony Dootson play in shaping the final artworks?
The story telling from both Aunty Deb and Tony Dootson played a very significant role in the final works of this project as that was what we wanted to achieve. Garby Elders are very passionate about family, respect, culture and community and I think that has been put on display throughout the artworks from the students and myself. Once you have a story to work with the artworks are always a lot more meaningful and to see them on display makes me very proud as the stories that are told are my stories, as well as coming from the Northern Gumbaynggirr Nation.
Continued over...
You worked closely with students from five local schools, what was it like collaborating with young people on such a meaningful project? Did their perspectives bring anything new or unexpected to the artwork?
Working with the school kids was really great! I was so amazed at how much each and every child was invested in this project. Once the
of their perspectives and concepts they put in were really great. I don’t think there will be any shortage of creative people in the next generation.
Can you tell us about the end result? What were some of the features of the final design?
stories were told they were automatically hooked in! They all listened very carefully and were genuinely interested in the stories told and the way of life for my people. It was awesome! It was so good to see what they took from the stories and put into their own artworks! All
ere are colours of fire spread around and they represent the burning of the headlands as told by knowledge holder Tony Dootson.
The end result turned out really good! Both the truck and gazebo were really well done with help from the graphic designer who put it all together. The hands you see signify the connection our people have with the land and the ocean as we are coastal people and we are lucky enough to share both worlds. There are colours of fire spread around and they represent the burning of the headlands as told by knowledge holder Tony Dootson. There’s also animals and their tracks scattered throughout the artworks. These were mainly done by the students and they are significant to all of this as they are the animals we mainly see around this certain area.
Why do you think it is so important for young Mob to see their voices and stories reflected in public spaces?
I think when the kids see their work on these
projects it would make them very proud, and just for them to be able to be part of something so special and close to their own they should be really proud. These students are our next generation! Everything we shared with them they really soaked it all in, they were all very respectful and all played their part perfectly. It is important for the younger generation to hear and see these stories so they have a better understanding of our culture and a better understanding of our way of life as Gumbaynggirr people and the land they walk upon. It’s so important for this information to be passed on and for people to see for years to come and we want to be able to protect our culture through our emerging generation.
What does it mean to you personally to have been part of a project that honours Elders and keeps Gumbaynggirr stories alive for future generations?
Personally this project means a lot to me, for
me to get the chance to work with these great organisations on a subject that is so close to me. This little part of Gumbaynggirr country out here in Corindi Beach is everything I represent! It means the world to me. To be able to keep these stories alive through the artworks and to do it all alongside our next generation would mean a great deal to the Elders past and present. I am just so thankful to be a part of it all.
To be able to keep these stories alive through the artworks and to do it all alongside our next generation would mean a great deal to the Elders past and present.
Looking ahead, are there any upcoming projects or ideas you’re excited to explore, either individually or with community?
There are a few projects in the works but I can’t really say much about them until they are finished so we will just have to wait and
see. Personally, I’m always working on something at home whether it’s for a friend, family or an organisation there’s always a canvas ready to go!
I also just want to give a shout out to Saltwater Freshwater Arts Alliance and the National Aboriginal Design Agency (N.A.D.A) who champion and showcase Aboriginal artists and makers from the Worimi, Biripi, Dunghutti, and Gumbaynggirr nations.
Also a big shout out to the Garby Elders who do fantastic work with community and younger generations with protecting and preserving our Aboriginal culture! Without these guys this project would have never happened. Thank you all.
Thanks Daniel.

Lee Kernaghan has had an unmatched career in Australian country music, and a er the success of his 2024 tour he has decided to continue on in 2025 with his Boys From e Bush ‘ e Concert’ tour! You can catch him at the C.ex Co s Harbour on Friday 23rd of May!
i Lee, your 2024 tour was a massive success, playing to the biggest crowds of your career. What was it like to be back on stage after a four-year hiatus, and how did it feel to see such an incredible response from fans?
Yes, it was amazing! It was the first tour in a long time. Even though I played at some big events like CMC Rocks and the Gympie Music Muster, I hadn't actually had the whole show out on the road for a long time. The response has been so big that we've continued it into 2025 with an encore tour which covers every state and territory in Australia.
Your 2025 ‘Boys From The Bush’ tour is covering even more ground, reaching places that missed out last year. What can fans in Coffs Harbour and Port Macquarie expect when you bring the show to town? Yeah, well, I'm stoked to be coming back to Coffs Harbour and Port Macquarie! I have fond memories of playing Coffs CeX back in 1992 on the very first Outback Club tour. Back in those days the band and I loaded the PA ourselves and set up the lights ourselves and we played in the club lounge... so it's awesome to be able to take it onto the big stage and bring the full show to town!
You’ve had an unmatched career in Australian country music, with 40 #1 hits and 38 Golden Guitars, looking back, what do you think has been the key to your longevity and connection with fans?
Well, I think country music is all about connecting. I was fortunate enough that back in the early 90’s when I wrote Boys From The Bush that it connected with a whole new generation of people out there in rural and regional Australia, and people from the land. It was not fashionable to do that at the time; to write songs about Australia, and in fact every record company that I took the album to to try and get them to sign me rejected me, so expectations were very low! But it just
seemed to connect with people, and you know for me it kind of validated what I wanted to do, and that's to write songs about Australia, and our people, and our way of life.
Your music has always paid tribute to the hardworking people of Australia. What inspires you most about rural and regional communities, and how do they continue to shape your songs?
Just their resilience during times of drought, and flood, and bushfires, and just the tyranny of distance. That incredible community spirit that exists right across Australia, you know from the big big town out into the tiny outback places. It's that sense of community, sticking together through thick and thin and passing the hat around in times of need. I think that inspires me so much and makes me proud, really proud, to be an Australian.
Your latest collaboration with The Wolfe Brothers, Country Is Coming to Town, is making waves. Can you tell us how that song came together and what it means to you?
For the rest of my life, I'll hold a huge debt of gratitude to Australia, and country Australia in particular, for giving me the privilege of singing the songs and performing them around the country.
To have been just a small cog in a much bigger wheel with some of the fundraising events that we've done around the country gives meaning to me, to the whole thing and to what it's all about. There's no doubt about it, seeing those communities coming together to support an important cause and help others that are worse off than themselves, inspires me enormously.
...when
I wrote Boys From e Bush it connected with a whole new generation of people out there in rural and regional Australia, and people from the land.
You’ve been recognised with an Australian of the Year award, an Order of Australia Medal, and inductions into the Roll of Renown and CMC Hall of Fame. Out of all your achievements, what are you most proud of?
The Wolfe Brothers started touring with me back in 2012 and we spent about 10 years on the road. During that time we've recorded a lot of songs together like Lights On The Hill, Damn Good Mates, and ‘Till It Ends, and I got a phone call just before Tamworth from Tommy and Nick and they asked me if I could sing on their new song and I jumped at the opportunity because they truly are my ‘damn good mates’!
You’ve raised millions of dollars for drought, flood, and bushfire relief, as well as hospitals and schools across Australia. Why has giving back to rural and regional communities always been so important to you?
My kids! I think nothing compares to holding your firstborn baby in your arms and seeing your babies being born, and the miracle of all of that. They are my greatest achievement, and I know I wasn't the only one involved, I've got my wife Robby to thank! She’s been an absolute blessing in my life, and we've written songs together, recorded together, and she's going to be hitting the stage with me in Coffs and in Port Macquarie and yeah, she’s hands down one of the best singers in the country!
Finally, after this massive 40-date tour, what’s next for Lee Kernaghan?
Yep, I'm busy working at writing a new album! I’m super excited to be bringing some new music out after a long time away from it. Keep an eye out.
Thanks Lee.
Kate Ceberano is going to be hitting the stage at Sawtell RSL on Friday 13th of June with her Australian Made tour, performing iconic Australian songs that have shaped Kate’s extraordinary career. This show is an invitation to feel the pulse of Australian music history through the eyes of one of its most enduring and celebrated voices.
SAWTELL RSL
FRIDAY 13 TH OF JUNE
Hi Kate, welcome back to regional Australia! What are you most looking forward to about bringing the Australian Made Tour to places like Sawtell?
Well firstly it’s really important to state that the way my career started was from doing regional touring, and lots of it, years of it actually! You would just do one tour and then you start from the beginning and do it all over again. I reckon it gave me the most invaluable currency of all, which is real people, real audiences, real fans.. and they stayed with me for years. There’s nothing like showing up for a band . I mean as a fan myself, if I knew a band I liked was
coming I would go every time they were in town. It was kind of a ritual. Australian Made is my history, and I’ll be telling stories about all the artists that I’ll be performing, I’ll be talking about and performing favourite songs, but also songs that I wrote that were inspired by the songwriters of Australia - and also just to bring into the space a very very important decade which was the 80s, when everything changed. The 80s were so incredibly diverse, it was awesome. This tour feels incredibly personal and nostalgic. Can you tell us about the inspiration behind revisiting and reimagining these iconic Australian songs?
I think that songs contain memories, and energy, and I think when people
hear certain songs they remember who they’ve been and who they were at the time they first heard those songs. I know from 40 years of watching audiences, it’s wonderful to produce and obviously create new material - you always want to do that as an artist - but when you play a song they all recognise, they just go crazy!
The original Australian Made tour was actually put together as a bit of a protest because we’d had Australian promoters saying that there’s no way that a full Australian band lineup would ever fill any rock stadiums; only international acts would. So all of the Australian bands that were around at that time; there were punk bands, pop bands, disco bands (the band I was in I’m Talking), and they put
us all on the same bill and it just sold out all around the country. It was the most exciting and most pivotal Australian movement in Australian music.
You’ve described this tour as a “love letter” to the artists, audiences and songs that shaped your journey. You’ll be covering legends like Divinyls, INXS, Paul Kelly, Silverchair, and Renee Geyer. How do you put your own spin on such beloved anthems while honouring their original spirit?
You just have to make sure you embody it faithfully within yourself, like it’s kind of an integrity thing. I think you have to ask yourself, am I still being me while I’m doing them? There’s a whole lot of reasons why Australian music is interrelated, and I feel like in many ways I can make those dots meet by just singing them truthfully.
When you’re actually performing and pu ing in all the hard yards in concert you just get fearless and then you take bigger risks, and I think that’s important.
You’re touring with some phenomenal musicians, Harts and Kathleen Halloran. What made them the perfect fit for this tour, and what’s the vibe like onstage with them?
These guys are really great, in that they’re both really hungry young artists who have their own original careers. Neither of them were born in the time when
Australian Made came about and I just really feel like it’s half of my duty to go and give them this collection and let them get under the skin of Australian music and then maybe they’ll take some of that with them as they go onwards in their career. We’re gonna be sharing all of the instruments, like Kathleen will go on bass, I’ll go on piano, I play drums, Darren (Harts) will get onto the bass too, and we all sing! Looking back at your five-decade career, are there moments that still feel surreal— memories that define what this journey has meant to you?
There’s probably too many to mention! But I can say that by the time Australian Made hit I was 19, and I’d already been in three different bands so I was already primed for it, but all my peers were a lot older than me so it was nice to be able to see people like Renee Geyer and Chrissy Amphlett and other women in music at that age sort of crossing over.. I felt like I was probably getting the same
sort of education that Kathleen’s getting with me now. In order to really get the gist of Australian music you’ve gotta really get out on the road and tour and work in Australia. When you’re actually performing and putting in all the hard yards in concert you just get fearless and then you take bigger risks, and I think that’s important.
Finally, for those coming to see you in Sawtell, what can they expect from the show? What kind of experience are you hoping they walk away with?
Well it’s been lovingly sewn together for them, and so it’s as much about them as it is for me. I guess I want them to come away with this feeling of.. that’s my Australia, and it’s my Australian story, and I am Australian made.. and it doesn’t really matter where you really have come from or how recently you’ve arrived, and I kind of love that, because we’re all from so many different places. Genetically speaking I’m from Sweden and I’m from the Philippines and I’m from Hawaii, but I don’t actually feel culturally connected because I wasn’t raised in those places. I feel very Australian. I think the music is gonna connect us all to what we feel is most Australian about ourselves. Thanks Kate.

Back Once Again Creative Artist Management has officially launched here on the Coffs Coast. The agency offers carefully curated talent that perfectly aligns with the client’s needs, whether it’s for a wedding, corporate event, birthday celebration, or a special occasion at a venue, they have you covered. We had a chat with owner Phil Grant (aka DJ iBexx) to find out more…
Can you tell us about the founding of your agency and what motivated you to start a DJ booking business?
I’ve had an incredible journey in establishing Back Once Again Creative Artist Management! Meeting influential industry contacts like Sharni Aird, Jason Hirt and Nick Wills has been pivotal. Their support, along with the encouragement from the DJs and management team at Aanuka Beach House seems to have played a crucial role in my decision to move forward with this venture. It's wonderful to experience how organically everything has come together. Building a network of supportive and experienced individuals can truly make a difference in the success of a new business.
What services does your agency provide to both DJs and event organisers?
Back Once Again Creative Artist Management offers carefully curated talent that perfectly aligns with the client's needs, whether it's for a wedding, corporate event, birthday celebration, or a special occasion at a venue. Our roster of artists, each with a minimum of 5-10 or more years of experience, are well-established in the Mid North Coast music scene. They bring a diverse repertoire of music, ensuring they can tailor their performances to meet the unique preferences and requirements of each client. How do you differentiate your agency from others in the industry?
Being an active DJ myself, what I’ve learnt from my experiences is that developing relationships is the key. When offering a service, you do the best you can, and you never drop the standard. Sometimes unforeseen circumstances have a way of interfering with that, and ultimately you just have to wear it. Every business goes through it, you just get better at forecasting it with time. Listening to clients is what the sole focus is at Back Once Again Creative Artist Management. How do you select the DJs that you represent, and what qualities do you look for in talent?
The artists represented by Back Once Again Creative Artist Management are seasoned professionals who have navigated through years, if not decades, of both triumphs and challenges.
With their extensive knowledge and experience, they are adept at adapting to various situations, understanding the brief, and reading the room to transform the atmosphere. This adaptability and versatility are at the core of what it means to be an artist. Back Once Again Creative Artist Management deeply values and respects their individuality, ensuring that each artist's unique style and perspective are honoured. What strategies do you use to promote the DJs you represent and attract new clients?
Keeping Back Once Again Creative Artist Management’s strategy will remain under wraps, and is a smart move in a competitive industry. It's like having a secret recipe that sets you apart from the rest. I can tell you that many successful agencies thrive by understanding their unique value proposition and leveraging their network to create opportunities. It's all about finding that sweet spot where your passion meets the market's needs, and it happens with the support and connections you've built!
How important is social media in today’s DJ booking landscape, and how do you leverage it?
is set to truly create a memorable event. Music has a unique ability to bring people together, creating an atmosphere where they can escape the everyday hustle and bustle, even if just for a few hours. It's about celebrating life’s moments, forging new connections, and rediscovering the joy of familiar tunes that feel like a comforting embrace. Whether it's a wedding, a corporate gathering, or a special celebration, the right music can transform the experience, making it unforgettable for everyone involved.
What are your goals for the agency over the next few years? Are there particular artists or genres you’re looking to expand into?
Many successful agencies thrive by understanding their unique value proposition and leveraging their network to create opportunities.
Social media has indeed revolutionised the way businesses operate and connect with their audiences. By leveraging platforms like Instagram, Facebook and Twitter, businesses can reach a global audience, engage with their community and tailor their services to meet consumer demands. It's all about understanding the nuances of each platform, creating content that resonates with your target audience. Listening to consumer feedback, adapting strategies accordingly, can lead to more meaningful interactions and long-term success. Whether it's through targeted advertising, engaging content, or community building, social media offers endless opportunities for growth and connection.

How has Mother’s Day changed now that your children are adults with partners and marriages on the horizon? It’s evolved into something deeper. When they were little, Mother’s Day was about homemade cards and presents, which I absolutely loved. Now, it’s about witnessing the lives they’re building. Seeing them in love, growing as partners, and stepping into marriage, two this year, fills me with indescribable joy. It’s a beautiful full-circle moment.
What’s one thing you love most about being a mum to adult children? I love the friendship I have with them all. The parenting never really stops, but now we share conversations, advice, and laughter on a whole new level. I get to be part of their adult lives - not just as a mum, but as a confidante and cheerleader.
How do you feel seeing your children in relationships and getting married? It brings me so
much happiness. Watching them love and be loved - it’s everything I ever hoped for. I see their strength, their kindness, and their loyalty reflected in the way they treat their partners. It makes me feel like my husband Scotty and I did something right!
What would you say to other mums who are entering this new chapter of motherhood? Embrace it. Let yourself feel proud. Your role is changing, but it’s not diminishing. You’ll still be needed, just in different ways.
What does Mother’s Day mean to you now? It’s a day of reflection and gratitude. It’s no longer just about me, it’s about the family we’ve become and the new branches we’re adding to the tree. I really love spending time, anytime I can, with my son Ben and his fiancé Benny, Jimmy my son and his partner Danielle and my daughter Nicola and her fiancé Matt (aka Wally). They are my true “happy place”!

Kira Furniss is a well known local that is passionate about her community, friends and family. NINE MONTHS AGO SHE GAVE BIRTH TO BEAUTIFUL TWIN GIRLS HARLOW AND WILLOW. We had a chat with this gorgeous mum to find out more about her journey as a mother thus far..
Csuper rewarding. I have always loved cooking and feeding people and it’s special for your own kids, oh, and watching them with their cousins, that’s really special.
What challenges do you face as a parent, especially with twins?
Hmmmmm LOTS, like all parents I guess. In the forefront of my mind is my mental health. I was diagnosed with bipolar three years ago and learning to manage that while learning to manage two new humans can be hard but I work at it most days. I worry about keeping them safe a lot! I can find it a challenge to get all the life admin tasks done being a single mum but I have a great support network who help me out a lot.
an you introduce yourself and share a little about your journey as a mum?
Hello I’m Kira, mum of twin girls Harlow and Willow. I grew up in Coffs and absolutely adore the town I call home. My journey as a mum has been tough and rewarding, total contradiction. I was shocked and surprised to find out I was pregnant with twins but now I have them I can’t imagine life any other way. My Mum passed away when the girls were two months old so dealing
with grief as well as two new lives has been challenging. My support network is amazing and my family and friends really help me. I couldn’t do it without them and the girls are a pure joy to be around.
What have been some of the most rewarding experiences you've had raising twin girls?
I was shocked and surprised to find out I was pregnant with twins but now I have them I can’t imagine life any other way. My Mum passed away when the girls were two months old so dealing with grief as well as two new lives has been challenging.
Just the pure, nothing in this world like it, love! They light up when I do the little, silliest things and I am just in awe of them exploring this new world. Watching them and playing with them is my most favourite thing to do! I waste a lot of hours with them. Feeding them is
How do you manage to balance work, parenting, and personal time?
I’m lucky enough not to work or stress about going back to work anytime soon, so that removes one stressor! I like to think I’ve combined personal and parenting time so it just happens organically most days. I do find myself craving adult convos cause the twins just don’t cut it, but I try to organise lunch or a coffee date with friends and family who fill up my cup. Parenting is 24/7 but I often ask someone to watch the girls so I can get a massage or facial.
Continued over...
Who is someone you look up to and admire, and why?
That’s tough - I look up to many people, especially locally with stuff happening in the community. I really looked up to my Mum though. She was kind and funny and open and generous. She worked hard and she loved us girls and all her grandkids hard! Her father, my Goon Goon, I always have admired, and continue to do so even in his death. He was very generous and hard working. Both my Mum and Goon Goon would give you the shirt off their back and would help almost anyone. I like that in humans.
What has been your biggest lesson learned as a mother?
our lives. It’s been great and difficult at the same time. If you change all of a sudden, sometimes people don’t like it, but I’m an acquired taste and I’m okay with that!
and just nurture and love the hell out of them. Find out what they enjoy and make it happen.
How do you foster a supportive environment for your girls to flourish?
How do you celebrate special occasions, like Mother’s Day, with your twins?
Once you have children everything seems insignificant and at the same time everything, every decision I make, feels so huge, especially if it a ects my girls.
We haven’t had one yet but I cannot wait for traditions though. Christmas I want to make it quite big and create some traditions, mainly based around bringing the family together with food, matching pajamas and Christmas outfits. Mother’s Day is hard, with my Mum gone but I’d love to really spend this day remembering all our beautiful mums in heaven and celebrate the amazing mums and aunties still here on earthside.
I watch them constantly. I want to understand them as best I can and equip them with the tools for them to flourish. I sing and dance a lot for them and now they are getting bigger, with them. I have my family and friends visit often too, so they are exposed to a wide variety of people. I’m just out here trying to meet their needs and help them thrive without having a mental breakdown - LOL.
What values do you prioritise teaching your daughters?
Kindness, curiosity, courage, playfulness, sharing, inclusion and lots of LOVE and kind words.
Can you share a favourite memory or tradition you have with your twins?
I think I have learned to use my voice. Once you have children everything seems insignificant and at the same time everything, every decision I make, feels so huge, especially if it affects my girls. So in realising this, I need to speak up and out about things concerning
What advice would you give to other parents raising children?
Do what works for you, learn about developmental ages and do the appropriate activities to stimulate their brain growth
I hope to create one around Christmas and also on the anniversary of Mum's death. At Christmas I want us to bake, wear matching pjs, play carols and decorate the house. Each year on Mum's death I'd love to get away somewhere in NSW and explore and create new memories and not sit around depressed. Thanks Kira.
Hi Sammy. You’re a proud mum, and now grandmother, and the powerhouse behind one of the most loved coffee vans on the Coffs Coast — how do you juggle it all?
I’m really close with my family — that’s what keeps me going. My daughter lives up in Brisbane with my grandson, who’s nine months old, and we FaceTime every single day. It’s amazing how connected you can stay through a phone screen — my grandson knows me so well already, just from those chats! We’re a tight family, and we stay in touch constantly. So while life is busy, it’s full of love. I get to see my daughter and my grandson often, and that

means everything to me. You grew up here on the Coffs Coast and seem to know just about everyone — can you share a bit about your upbringing and what the community means to you?
We’re a tight family, and we stay in touch constantly. So while life is busy, it’s full of love. I get to see my daughter and my grandson often, and that means everything to me.
takeaway. I want it to feel like they’ve come to my house. I want people to feel welcome, like the van is their space too. I also created a social media hub called Hey Coffs to highlight everything I love about the Coffs Coast — the people, the places, and especially the small businesses. I know how tough it can be running your own gig, and I love that Hey Coffs gives us a way to support each other and shine a light on the good stuff happening locally.
The community means the world to me. When I first started the coffee van, it was actually the community that got me through some really hard times in life. I moved to Coffs Harbour from Tamworth when I was seven, and since then, it’s always felt like home. It’s more than just a town — it’s like family. When people come to get their coffee, I don’t want it to feel like just another
What have been some of the best lessons you have learnt from your own mum over the years?
My Mum is one of the kindest people you’ll ever meet. Growing up, our house was always open — she would literally invite in people who were homeless or anyone who just needed a place to feel at home. There was always food and always a seat at the table. She taught us to be kind, no matter who someone is or where
they come from. If someone looked nice, she’d say, “Tell them — if you’re thinking something kind, don’t keep it to yourself” and I’ve carried that with me. She’s also a lot of fun — when we hang out, we’re always laughing and daring each other to do the funniest things. I’ve learnt so much from her — kindness, fun, and a great sense of humour.
Your dad was a country musician — can you tell us about him and his music?
We pretty much grew up on stage as performers. Our childhood was all about music — and we had people from the music industry in and out of our home all the time. I remember meeting Jimmy Little, and even Humphrey B. Bear — which was a big deal back then! Dad was really well known back in the 80s in the Tamworth music scene. He played country rock and toured with Brian Young. He sang everything from Elvis to Alan Jackson, and he had a real presence. He believed that stage presence had to be strong or the show wasn’t good enough — and that stuck with me. Now I bring that same energy into my coffee van. I’m always telling my staff, 'Don’t turn your back on the customer — we’re performing!'
We have to ask... where did the nickname “Sammy Turtle” come from? There’s got to be a great story behind that!
Growing up, we had a family friend named Brian Young who was like a grandfather to us. He ran Brian Young Outback Tours — a travelling country music show that took the stage across remote parts of Australia. His shows were always highly professional, and stage presence was everything to him. He gave us all
nicknames, and mine was ‘Sammy Turtle.’ It’s the only one that stuck! Even in high school people called me Turtle. Brian helped a lot of people get their start, like Beccy Cole and Troy Cassar-Daley. He taught us that presence and connection matter — and that’s something I carry with me every day in my own work. What inspired you to start your coffee van at Watsons and what do you love most about the daily chats and familiar faces that roll by each morning?
Now
I bring that same energy into my co ee van. I’m always telling my sta , ‘Don’t turn your back on the customer — we’re performing!
It’s actually a funny story — I was on my way to Bunnings and popped home first to check on our baby goat (as you do!). On the way, I got a flat tyre and pulled into Watsons Caravans — which just so happens to be on the same street I live on. They used to have a coffee van, and the barista told me it was her last day. I asked if they’d let someone else in, and by the next afternoon, I was in. The whole thing felt like fate — almost too perfect to be a coincidence. I live just down the road, and now I work on the same street. What I love most is the people. I’ve laughed, cried, and celebrated with so many locals. It’s more than a job — it’s a community. Being a mum and now a grandma too, how has your idea of motherhood evolved over the years? What do your kids (and grandkids!) teach you now?
I’ve always said that my daughter Brittany is the better version of me. She’s more mature, more grounded, and so wise. When she lived at home, our two-kilometre driveway was where we had all our big conversations. She’d challenge the way I thought and helped me grow into a better version of myself. Honestly, I feel like she’s raised me in some ways. Now, seeing her as a mum to Joseph fills me with so much pride. I couldn’t be prouder to be her mum, Joseph’s grandma, and my own mum’s daughter.
What does a perfect Mother’s Day look like for you? Are you the breakfast-in-bed type — or more likely out serving coffee at sunrise?
One of my biggest pet peeves is eating in bed — I just can’t do crumbs in the sheets! So no breakfast in bed for me. My idea of a perfect Mother’s Day is heading out to a café, ordering veggie fritters with a poached egg, and having my coffee made for me by someone else. I love cafés — the vibe, the people-watching, the coffee. It’s my favourite way to slow down. Thanks Sammy.

You may recognise Rachel Law as our circulation coordinator here at FOCUS but SHE ALSO WEARS ANOTHER HAT AS A PERSONAL TRAINER AND NUTRITIONIST. RACH HAS HAD A POSITIVE IMPACT AND HAS CHANGED AND TRANSFORMED MANY LIVES so we had a chat with her so she could offer some advice on how you can “Glow up” your fitness and health…
i Rach, can you share your journey into the fitness and nutrition industry? What inspired you to become a personal trainer and nutritionist?
Growing up I was pretty athletic, then heading into high-school I began to put on weight. Eventually I moved out of home, but unfortunately my house mate at the time began to bully me about my weight. This was my initial motivation to get me moving, but then the more I moved my body and ate clean, the better I began to feel, both inside and outside. I completed my Diploma in Nutrition and then my Certificate 4 in Fitness 7 years ago. Whilst studying I realised how much limited knowledge society had, and the impact nutrition and training has on health and wellbeing. My two children also inspired me to lose weight and become the best version of myself so I could be a role model as well as keeping up with two active boys. What certifications or qualifications do you hold, and how do they enhance your approach to health and wellness?
the latest trends and research in fitness and nutrition?
I've just enrolled into university at Southern Cross for the bachelor of exercise physiology which starts in July. I’m also doing a lot of reading and general courses online. The latest one was fundamentals of fat loss.
What is your training philosophy, and how do you tailor your approach to meet the needs of different clients? Not one size fits all! All my programs are catered for the individual, not one single person is the same and therefore their training programs and nutrition are different.
It’s
coach my client, correcting technique and adaption exercises if needed. During their rest period I always have a little joke around and then straight back to training again. To finish off we have to stretch to help with DOMS and stretching the muscles.
How do you incorporate nutrition education into your training programs?
ok to have a day o or a weekend where you’re having foods you don’t usually have. You have to live your life without complete restrictions.
Clients may have injuries or muscular dominance which I cater for by adapting their programs and asking lots of questions. In my studies I learnt that people have many neurological training styles and are more likely to succeed with selected
It depends on what the clients goals are. Usually pre-training I advise them to have carbohydrates to help fuel the workout such as a banana. Post-workout, the consumption of protein helps build and prepare muscles. As we sweat during training, I advise my client to drink lots of water and some form of electrolytes to replace the ones which are lost through sweat.

START SMALL, SET ACHIEVABLE GOALS AND BELIEVE THAT YOU CAN DO THIS, BECAUSE SOMETIMES YOUR HEAD SAYS NO BUT YOU ARE MORE CAPABLE THAN YOU REALISE.
Can you share your thoughts on popular diets, such as keto, paleo, or intermittent fasting?
Personally I don’t like these diets, they can work, but only if you have enough knowledge around the diet. I’d also suggest that talking to a medical practitioner or professional before starting these diets, especially for those with a medical condition.. eg I can’t do fasting because my blood pressure is so low I need to constantly eat. With keto it will only work if you have the knowledge of what to eat to go into ketosis.
Can you share a success story of a client who achieved their goals with your guidance and what contributed to their success?
I have many of them. Two of my nutrition clients lost 30kg in 6 months. Then I see my personal training clients who have lost weight but are also developing strength. In my group fitness classes I have 75 year old ladies who can hold planks, push ups and squats (this is a massive success).
There are many challenges they face but I find that the main 3 are time, knowledge and gym anxiety. Time is challenging for lots of people especially with their busy lives. With my clients I sit down and we talk about how much time they have to train and how many times a week they can train. Sometimes it may only be 3x a week and that’s ok. For those with limited times there may be supersets involved or at home workouts.
With knowledge I educate my clients by talking to them and taking my nutritional clients shopping to help them learn about healthy options eg reading the back of the labels and how to understand them.
They see clients change their lifestyles and that is so inspiring!
What challenges do clients typically face when trying to make lifestyle changes, and how do you help them overcome these obstacles?
Nutritional meal preparation is also looked at. With knowledge I educate my clients by talking to them and taking my nutritional clients shopping to help them learn about healthy options eg reading the back of the labels and how to understand them. Gym anxiety is surprisingly the biggest challenge, talking to clients and building a rapport with them helps with this as I remember what it was like walking into a gym for the first time
How do you help your clients stay motivated and accountable throughout their fitness journey?
I check in on them several times a week, see how they are feeling, how their training is going and if they need help with anything.
What is your personal fitness routine,
and how does it influence your work as a trainer and nutritionist?
My routine mainly focuses on hypertrophy at the moment, but I will be moving into more cardio starting this month as soccer season is starting. I train five days a week with two rest days. I think that training in the club and my consistency helps inspire people training and gives them ideas of training methods.
How do you practice self-care and maintain a balanced lifestyle amidst your busy career?
Being a single mum is tough and the only way I get it all done is to plan out my days. I have a tight schedule with working at the gym, being a fulltime mum, working for Focus, kids sports and my sports. I’m always excited for the weekend when I can have a relaxed schedule. In order to succeed you have to plan ahead and keep pushing through everyday!
What advice would you give to someone just starting their fitness journey?
Start small, set achievable goals and believe that you can do this because sometimes your head says no but you are more capable than you realise.
There will be days where it’s hard and if you mess up - that’s ok, tomorrow is another day!

Can you tell us about your background and how you got into the hair extension industry? I’ve always been interested in hairdressing though an apprenticeship was never suitable. Becoming an extension technician was the perfect solution, I could still be with my family, create a career and be in an industry I love. I’ve been an extension tech for the last 9 years and have recently been nominated for the Australia-wide Hair Extensions Awards in June and been announced as a semi-finalist in 3 categories.
Can you explain the different methods of installation you offer, and how do you determine which is best for each client? I am certified in 5 methods of hair extensions – tape, flat weft, invisible weft, nanobead and microbead, and I’m currently training in keratin bonds and mesh/meshless integration. I specialise in flat wefts; these are my go-to options. However each client is different and I offer in-depth free consults. These are a must to assess a client’s hair and choose the best method for them.
What advice do you give clients regarding maintenance and care of their extensions?
Follow the maintenance advice of your technician and keep to the regular maintenance schedule of 6-8 weeks.
What should someone look for when choosing a hair extension installer?
I specialise
in flat wefts; these are my go-to options. But each client is different and
I
offer in-depth free consults. These are a must to assess a client’s hair and choose the best method for them.
Me! Joking, but the important things to look at when choosing your extension tech are, how long they’ve been in the industry and their education - especially keeping it updated. Check out their work; suss out their socials and look at their hair pictures for straightened, styled and “under the hood” to see their installs. You also need to make sure you both click as this is an ongoing relationship and not meshing well with the salon or stylist can make the experience an unenjoyable one. What common misconceptions do people have about hair extensions that you would like to clear up? That hair extensions hurt! They should never hurt, if so, they are not installed correctly and need to be altered ASAP! That hair extensions damage your hair. With proper installation and aftercare, extensions won’t cause damage. Clients that follow
aftercare instructions and keep up regular maintenance find that their hair grows longer and healthier. That hair extensions are just for length. Yes, we can achieve amazing length goals with extensions but more importantly we can add a subtle difference in volume to give a client a huge confidence boost.
What do you enjoy most about working with hair extensions and your clients?
Bringing joy to my clients when they see their transformations. It is amazing what confidence hair can bring to a person.
What are your future goals or aspirations within the hair extension industry? I highly value education. I plan to continue to learn and grow, to master more hair extension methods for my clients. I aim to become a hair loss specialist training in methods of hair loss systems to help clients when traditional hair extension options are not suitable.
Thanks Shannen.
Can you tell us a bit about Ooh La La Nail Supplies and how it all started? Absolutely! Ooh La La Nail Supplies began in 2018 with a dream — to bring high-quality, Australian-designed, nail tech-approved products to artists who deserved better. After years in the nail and beauty industry, we saw a gap in the market for pro-grade products that were not only stunning, but also safe. Everything we offer is HEMA-free, crueltyfree, vegan, hypoallergenic and 10-free — no nasties, just results.
What started as a tiny passion project quickly snowballed into one of the biggest nail supply brands in Australia and New Zealand. We still pinch ourselves!
What makes Ooh La La stand out in such a competitive market? We’re nail artists first, brand owners second — and that shows in everything we do. Every product is created with intention, tested in real salons, and designed to perform. We now offer over
470+ highly pigmented gel polish colours (and counting!), along with builder gels, nail art tools, and salon-grade brushes.
We’ve also expanded into a DIY-friendly range for nail lovers at home — because not everyone can make it to the salon, but that doesn’t mean they should miss out on quality. Whether you’re treating clients or treating yourself, Ooh La La delivers pro-level products for every kind of mani moment.
What kind of products do you offer?
From buttery builder gels and ultra base coats to soft gel tips, chrome powders, liners, and everything in between — we’re your one-stop nail dreamland. Whether you’re a seasoned tech or just love to DIY, we’ve got goodies you’ll fall in love with.
What started as a tiny passion project quickly snowballed into one of the biggest nail supply brands in Australia and New Zealand. We still pinch ourselves!
Oh, and we’re also the exclusive Australian stockist for the Chaun Legend Acrylic System. He’s the celeb nail tech behind looks for Kylie Jenner, Hailey Bieber, Zendaya and more — and we’re pretty proud to bring that Hollywood magic to Coffs Harbour.
How do you ensure quality and safety?
We don’t compromise — full stop. Every product is rigorously tested in salon settings before it launches. We work closely with our manufacturers to ensure everything meets Australian safety standards and exceeds industry expectations. Our customers trust us, and that means the world. What’s been your biggest challenge so far? Scaling fast while staying personal —
that’s a biggie. As our brand grew, we made it our mission to keep that same love, customer service, and authenticity we started with. COVID also threw a few curveballs with supply chain delays, but we stayed transparent and kept showing up for our community. Being a small, scrappy team actually helped us move fast and adapt when it mattered most.
What product is your current bestseller? Our builder gels are always flying off the shelves, and our Ultra Base is a bit of a cult fave. It’s more than a base coat — it grips like glue without the harsh stuff, smooths out the nail plate, and keeps manicures flawless for weeks. It’s the secret sauce behind long-lasting manis.
How has social media played a role in your success? It’s been everything. Social media is where we built our brand, connected with customers, and created a space for nail techs to feel seen and supported. We love showing off new launches, doing cheeky reels, and giving people a peek behind the scenes — warehouse chaos and all! We’re not just here to sell; we’re here to share, teach, laugh and lift each other up.
Tell us a bit more about your personal journey. We both came from customer service backgrounds, so people have always been at the core of what we do. Ooh La La started with a dream, a dash of courage, and a whole lot of determination. It was just the two of us (and a warehouse full of gel polish & glitter), figuring it out as we went — and somehow,
it worked. We grew faster than we ever expected, but we never lost sight of why we started: to bring colour, quality, and kindness to the nail world. But behind the growth were some pretty real-life challenges.
I (Hannah) have been walking a long, emotional fertility journey and am about to start IVF.
Janice has navigated single motherhood while running a growing business like an absolute boss. Life hasn’t always been easy — but we’ve stuck together and stayed true to our mission.
It’s not always glamorous — there’ll be late nights and moments of doubt — but if you stay consistent, back yourself, and keep learning… amazing things can happen.
We’ve built something beautiful out of the hard moments, and that makes it all the more meaningful.
What advice do you have for women wanting to start a business? Get a good accountant — seriously! It’ll save you so many tears.
But really? Find something you’re passionate about, spot the gaps in the market, and don’t be afraid to go all in. It’s not always glamorous
— there’ll be late nights and moments of doubt — but if you stay consistent, back yourself, and keep learning… amazing things can happen.
Also: ask for help. Take up space. There’s more than enough room for all of us to win.
What’s next for Ooh La La? A baby or two would be nice — ha! But seriously, we’re working on even more launches, expanding our public-use range, and growing globally while keeping our Aussie heart front and centre. Nail education is also a big focus — we want to empower the next generation of nail artists with tools, knowledge, and a little sparkle.

abits are the building blocks of our daily lives. They shape our routines, influence our decisions, and often determine our personal and professional growth. While habits can be powerful tools for efficiency and stability, there comes a time when some of them no longer serve us well. Recognising this moment is crucial for fostering growth, improving well-being, and achieving our goals.
The Comfort of Habits
Habits are formed through repetition. They allow us to perform tasks without expending significant mental energy, freeing up our minds for more complex decisions. For example, taking the same route to work is a habit that simplifies life. However, not all habits are inherently beneficial. Some may have served a purpose but become counterproductive as circumstances change. For instance, the habit of working late into the night might have been necessary during a demanding project, but continuing this pattern long-term can lead to burnout. Similarly, relying on comfort foods during stressful times might provide temporary relief but can negatively impact physical health if sustained. The key is to evaluate whether a habit aligns with your current needs and aspirations.
Recognising when a habit is no longer beneficial can be challenging, especially if it has been ingrained over time. Here are some signs to watch for:
Stagnation or Lack of Growth: If a habit keeps you in your comfort zone and prevents you from
WHEN OUR HABITS NO LONGER SERVE US WELL: RECOGNISING THE NEED FOR CHANGE
exploring new opportunities, it may be time to reassess. Growth often requires stepping outside familiar comfort zones and routines.
Negative Impact on Well-Being: Habits that harm your physical, emotional, or mental health are clear indicators of the need for change. For example, excessive screen time can lead to sleep disturbances and increased stress.
Conflict with Goals: As your goals evolve, some habits may no longer align with your aspirations. For instance, a habit of procrastination might hinder your ability to meet deadlines or achieve personal milestones.
Feelings of Frustration or Guilt: If a habit leaves you feeling unfulfilled, frustrated, or guilty, it may be a sign that it is not serving you well. These emotions often indicate a misalignment between your actions and values.
Even when we recognise that a habit is no longer serving us, letting go can be difficult. This resistance often stems from fear of change, comfort in familiarity, or a lack of awareness about alternative behaviours. Habits are deeply rooted in our neural pathways, making them challenging to break without conscious effort.
Additionally, societal or peer pressures can reinforce certain habits, even if they’re not beneficial.
Steps to Break Free and Build Better Habits
Self-Reflection: Take time to evaluate your habits and their impact on your life. Journaling or discussing your routines with a trusted friend or mental health professional can provide valuable insights.
Identify Triggers: Understand what prompts the
habit. For example, if stress triggers emotional eating, finding healthier ways to manage stress, such as exercise or mindfulness which may help.
Set Clear Goals: Define what you want to achieve by changing the habit. Having a clear purpose may motivate you to stay committed to the change.
Start Small: Breaking a habit does not happen overnight. Focus on small, manageable changes that gradually lead to the desired outcome.
Replace, Do not Erase: Instead of simply eliminating a habit, replace it with a positive one. For instance, swap late-night scrolling on your phone with reading a book or meditating.
Seek Support: Share your goals with supportive friends, family, or a mental health professional. Accountability can make the process more manageable and rewarding.
Embracing Change for a Better Future
Letting go of habits that no longer serve us is not about erasing the past but about making room for growth and improvement. It is an opportunity to align our actions with our values and aspirations, creating a life that reflects who we are and who we want to become.
Change can be uncomfortable, but it is also a powerful catalyst for transformation. By recognising when a habit no longer serves you and taking proactive steps to replace it, you can unlock your potential and pave the way for a healthier, more fulfilling future.
Until next time, be kind and gentle with yourself.

Coffs Harbour Chiropractic Centre, under the leadership of Principal Chiropractor John Vandenberg, has been a trusted provider of chiropractic care for many years. To meet the increasing demand for quality services, John expanded with a second clinic in Woolgoolga in 2020. His wife, Sharon, who runs the day to day, shares his passion for helping others and they both have strong ties to the local community. John is a well-respected figure on the Coffs Coast, supported by his highly skilled team to deliver comprehensive chiropractic care.
We see that you have recently relocated, can you tell us a bit more about the new premises?
We have been lucky enough to move into a beautiful house on Harbour Drive. The building has so much history. It was Coffs Harbour’s original Police Station and Courthouse and more recently, The Regional Museum. It was built in 1906 and has lovely high ceilings, plenty of natural light
and beautiful garden surrounds. Our long-term receptionist, Donna, has had a field day styling it, giving it a warm and welcoming feel. We also have a self-serve coffee area set up for our patients, with many coming in earlier to their appointments so they can enjoy a cuppa.
With the move, you seem to have expanded your practice to include other family members, was this something you planned?
It wasn’t something that was actually planned. It just seemed to evolve once we moved
into the new premises as it has more rooms. We then had the opportunity for 2 of our daughters and our son-in-law to join us. Our eldest daughter, Rachel O’Brien, started with us last year as an accredited practising dietitian and our youngest daughter, Kodie Vandenberg, also joined us as a Chiropractor. Recently Rachel’s husband, Zac, has come on board as an Exercise Physiologist, and has even converted one of our rooms into a gym! With your new multidisciplinary practice can you tell us a bit more about your team
and the services you now offer?
We aim to provide the best chiropractic care we can so that people can continue to do the things they love. We use gentle adjustments or corrections to restore mobility to restricted spinal regions and relieve pressure off the nerves. Our care is tailored to suit the individual from the very young, through to the elderly.
With the addition of Kodie, we can now offer greater availability in both our Coffs Harbour clinic, including Saturday mornings, and extend our Woolgoolga clinic to 4 days. Kodie graduated with a Masters of Chiropractic and worked in Sydney for several years, before returning to the Coffs Coast. She enjoys the holistic approach that chiropractic care provides, assessing not just the site of injury, but how the musculoskeletal and nervous system are functioning together. Outside of work, Kodie has always had a passion for sports, particularly netball and CrossFit, which has given her a deep appreciation for movement, injury prevention, and performance.
Rachel has been working as a private practice dietitian for 8 years. She provides nutrition advice and tailored dietary modifications to support improved health outcomes for her patients. Rachel has experience supporting patients with a range of clinical conditions, of all ages, with a special interest in gastrointestinal nutrition and chronic disease management.
Zac is an accredited exercise physiologist and exercise scientist and is all about harnessing the power of movement and exercise to support injury rehabilitation, chronic disease management and strength and conditioning. hat first inspired you to become a Lifeline Crisis Support Volunteer?
I’ve always felt drawn to supporting others emotionally and have a deep passion for people and their personal stories. I’ve also had people close to me struggle with mental health, so I understand how powerful it can be to simply have someone there to listen.
Can you tell us about your first few shifts on the phones? What was it like stepping into that space for the first time? My first few shifts were a mix of nerves, adrenaline, and deep compassion. I felt the weight of the responsibility, but I was also completely supported through the transition. The team created a safe space to grow, and the mentors were incredible. The training really kicks in when you need it, and at no point did I ever feel alone or out of my depth.
What have you found most rewarding about volunteering with Lifeline?
Supporting others is something that truly matters to me. The most rewarding moments are when, at the end of a shift, someone says, “You made a difference to my day… to my life” and you can feel how true that is. There’s nothing that compares to that.
How has being part of Lifeline impacted you personally? It’s changed the way I listen. I’ve become more available to really hear what someone is trying to say. My relationships are deeper, and I’ve gained a greater sense of gratitude. Lifeline has helped me see the
struggles others face, which constantly puts life into perspective.
How would you describe the training process to become a Crisis Supporter?
It’s incredibly thorough, well-structured, and deeply supportive. You’re never thrown in unprepared. There’s a strong focus on building skills, increasing self-awareness, and plenty of practice. You come out of it knowing you’re part of a team, and you’re never alone in the process.
Were there any parts of the training that surprised you or stood out? Absolutely. The bonds formed with other trainees really stood out - I didn’t expect that level of connection. The support, feedback, and encouragement we shared helped build my confidence and allowed me to learn so much from others along the way. How supported do you feel as a volunteer, both during and outside of your shifts?
I always feel supported by the Lifeline team. Whether it’s regular check-ins, the chance to debrief after a tough call, or the social connections, we’re well looked after. They genuinely prioritise self-care and keeping us connected as volunteers.
What would you say to someone thinking about volunteering but unsure if they’re the ‘right type’ of person? There is no “right” or “wrong” person. You don’t need to be perfect or have all the answers, you just need to care and be willing to listen without judgment. If you have the heart to be involved, then you are the right person.
Do you have a moment from a shift that’s
stayed with you? Yes, I spoke to a young woman who was contemplating ending her life. I spent time really listening, helping her connect with support services, and creating space for her to feel heard. At the end of the call, she told me she had never felt so understood. Knowing she was someone’s daughter, someone’s friend - it stayed with me. Whenever you sit with someone in that intense space of pain and you feel it shift, even slightly, to hope, that moment stays with you. Not in a heavy way, but in a way that brings calm and clarity. You know you’re where you’re meant to be. You feel your purpose.
What does it mean to you, knowing you’re part of something that saves lives every day? Every single shift, I know I’ve made a difference to someone, and not just to them, but to their loved ones too. To make that kind of impact through something as simple and human as listening… it fills my heart.
I’m so grateful for the opportunity Lifeline has given me. It’s taught me skills I use every day, and it’s shown me how many people just need connection. If we could all hear what others are truly going through, maybe the world would be a little kinder. Until then, I’ll keep making a difference—one phone call at a time.

We’ve all been there. A moment we regret. A word spoken in anger. An action, intentional or not, that left a mark on someone else’s heart. Time passes, and we tell ourselves, it’s too late to say sorry.
But here’s the truth: It’s never too late.
A genuine apology— one given with humility, without excuses, and with a true acknowledgment of the hurt caused, has the power to heal wounds that may have been carried for years. Not just for the person receiving it, but for the one giving it as well.
✓ Rebuild trust and connection
✓ Help someone heal from unresolved hurt
✓ Free you from the weight of guilt
✓ Support your own mental and emotional wellbeing
It can reduce stress, ease anxiety, and allow us to reconnect not only with others but also with ourselves.
A heartfelt apology isn’t about erasing the past; it’s about honouring it. It tells the other person: I see the impact of my actions. I acknowledge your feelings. I take full responsibility.
It doesn’t matter if it’s been months, years, or even decades. When sincerity is at the core, an apology can:
When we apologise, we lighten an emotional load that we may have carried - often unknowingly. Unresolved guilt, shame, or regret can quietly affect our mental health over time. Offering a sincere apology can bring a deep sense of relief and emotional clarity. It can reduce stress, ease anxiety, and allow us to reconnect not only with others but also with ourselves. It reminds us that we’re human, capable of growth, and worthy of forgiveness.
The Art of a True Apology.
A sincere apology doesn’t include justification, deflection, or expectation. It’s not:
✗ “I was going through a tough time.”
✗ “I didn’t mean to hurt you.”
✗ “I was only trying to help.”
Instead, a true apology is simple:
✓ “I am deeply sorry for how I made you feel. I take full responsibility.”
✓“I realise now how my words/actions hurt you, and I regret them.”
✓ “I don’t expect anything in return, I just want to acknowledge the impact I had on you.”
No defences. No explanations. Just accountability and care.
A Personal Story. I’ve been on both sides of an apology. I’ve carried the weight of unspoken regret, and I’ve also received apologies I never expected and I can tell you this - when an apology is given with sincerity, it has the power to release years of resentment, confusion, and pain.
It’s Never Too Late. If someone’s name just came to mind while reading this, maybe today is the day. Maybe your apology - whether spoken in person, written in a message, or simply expressed in your heart could be the key to healing for both of you.
Apologies aren’t about perfection. They’re about integrity.
And sometimes, they’re the first step towards something beautiful.

Q: What is one piece of advice that you can offer someone living with Endometriosis or Pelvic Pain?
A: Preparation and education can be the keys to success. Learning which pain management tools work for you and your pain, and being prepared with how and when to use these tools can make flare-up days more manageable and reduce your pain.
Q: Can you tell us about your role in the EPP Clinic and your background?
A: I am currently working at the Women’s Health Centre as a women’s health clinician and endorsed Midwife. I am very excited to introduce myself as part of the women’s health nursing team in our Endometrioses and Pelvic Pain (EPP) Clinic.
Q: What is one piece of advice that you can offer someone living with Endometriosis or Pelvic Pain?
A: One piece of advice I would give to women experiencing chronic pelvic pain or endometriosis is that there’s no one-sizefits-all solution. What may help others might not work for you, and that’s completely normal. You are on your own journey that requires patience and determination, and always trust yourself, your body and your experiences.
Don’t hesitate to lean on your support systems — we’re here with you and will advocate for you, every step of the way.

of advice that you can offer someone living with Endometriosis or Pelvic Pain?
Q: What is one piece
A: If I could offer one piece of advice to anyone living with Endometriosis or pelvic pain, it would be this: advocate for yourself — your pain is real and valid. Finding a supportive care team that listens and respects your journey can make a world of difference. Never hesitate to seek second opinions or explore options that align with your unique needs.
Q: Can you tell us about your role in the EPP Clinic and your background?
Q: What is one piece of advice that you can offer someone with Endo or Pelvic Pain?
A: I’m an osteopath with a special focus on women’s pelvic health and persistent pain. As part of the Local Pain Educator programme, run by the University of South Australia, I work to bring the latest pain science to rural communities. Recently, I’ve started working at the EPP Clinic as a Pelvic Health and Pain Educator, where I help women better understand and manage their pain.

A: Persistent pelvic pain, whether or not linked to endometriosis, is always about more than just tissue damage. Pain is a powerful way for our nervous system to protect us, so when managing pain, it’s important to consider all the factors contributing to this need for protection, including the emotional and social aspects, not just the physical.
What is Deep Infiltrating Endometriosis (DIE)?
Superficial endometriosis can be thought of as a disease that is just on the surface. When endometriosis grows into tissues and organs, like ovaries and the bowel, we consider this as deep infiltrating disease.
What is a DIE ultrasound and why is that different to a usual ultrasound?
A standard pelvic ultrasound will look at the uterus, ovaries, and the immediate surrounds (the adnexa). A DIE ultrasound looks at all these organs as well as looking at specific locations where endometriosis typically likes to develop such as the anterior rectum, the ligaments that support the pelvis, the bladder, and fallopian tubes. It takes around twice as long as a normal pelvic ultrasound and requires an internal ultrasound to see the organs and tissues of the pelvis well.
What is the benefit of DIE Ultrasound?
Initially DIE ultrasounds were described to assist in planning surgery and assessing for deep disease that may involve other surgeons. With ongoing development of
DIE ultrasound techniques, surgical accuracy of moderate and severe endometriosis was increased too. These days, the diagnostic benefits of these more thorough examinations help general practitioners to provide more accurate counselling, treatment options and more importantly helps individuals to understand their pain and make informed decisions on their treatments.
Is a DIE Ultrasound needed for a diagnosis of endometriosis?
Not necessarily. Endometriosis may be identified in a normal pelvic ultrasound where a collection of disease is seen in the ovary, or there may be indirect signs like ovaries that are not moving. The dynamic and real time aspect of a DIE ultrasound is essential for accurate diagnosis of the disease but importantly it helps to validate patient symptoms as we progress through the examination. This evolution in ultrasound
techniques may show endometriosis not seen on a usual ultrasound and provide a diagnosis previously only seen at the time of surgery.
is evolution in ultrasound techniques may show endometriosis not seen on a usual ultrasound and provide a diagnosis previously only seen at the time of surgery.
It is important to acknowledge no type of imaging is perfect. Ultrasound and MRI both have excellent rates of identifying deep endometriosis however research has demonstrated superiority of ultrasound for its cost effectiveness, functional assessment, as well as high accuracy of disease. Both MRI and ultrasound require high levels of interpretation, as endometriosis can be subtle, and it is important that these studies are reported by medical professional’s adept at both image interpretation as well as clinical understanding of the disease.

Chris, how long have you been the sales agent at The Pines Community Woolgoolga? I have been selling homes at The Pines Community over the past ten years. For the past four months, I have been working closely on the development of 43 brand new homes that have been architecturally designed with quality and low maintenance features for the best in over 50s living.
What has drawn you to have a career in the Land Lease Living sector and over 50s communities? I was a real estate agent for nine years and throughout that time I sold a number of homes within over 50s communities. I enjoy selling within these communities and assisting those over 50 to find their dream home and start their next chapter of life. So, I decided to make it my full-time job and have since been working for 10 years at The Pines over 50s community. What do you find most rewarding being in your role? I really enjoy helping people find their special home to downsize to and help them discover a relaxed lifestyle that they perhaps didn’t know was financially achievable for them.
What makes The Pines unique compared
SALES AGENT AT THE PINES
Christopher Ryder is your local sales agent at e Pines Over 50s living community by Hometown Australia. Christopher has over 10 years of experience in sales in over 50s community living and has a wealth of knowledge with many finding this comforting as they make a big lifestyle change.
to other over 50s communities? The Pines is a hidden gem! The community is walking distance to the beach and has a peaceful nature with the beautiful surrounds. You really do get the best of both worlds with access to secluded beaches and the lively culture of the Coffs Harbour region not far away.
What do you think are the main selling points for someone looking to purchase at The Pines? There are a few main points. Firstly, it would be the range of preloved and new modern homes available. The homes are of exceptional quality with a range of great designs to choose from. The price range is also a big factor as Hometown Australia provide affordable homes, so it’s great to show people the range we have so that they can choose something that suits their financial needs. The next factor would be the community living aspect. Residents enjoy being part of a secure community with a range of amenities at their fingertips. Residents can relax by the pool, get together in the clubhouse, enjoy a sundowner drink on the deck, or host family and friends at the BBQ area. Lastly, it would be the close walking distance to the beach and the overall relaxed lifestyle that The Pines offers.
What homes are currently available at The Pines? We recently held a home open day event where attendees were able to explore the brand-new stage homes that have been
thoughtfully designed for comfort, style, and low-maintenance living. We also have a range of move-in-ready homes available where you can make the switch to a relaxed over 50s lifestyle sooner than you think!
What is the main concern you find people have when looking to make the move to an over 50s community? The main concern I have found is leaving the family home to downsize. It is a very daunting task but in my experience those I have sold to have said they have never looked back and love their new home and lifestyle.
What is Land Lease Living and what are the benefits? Land Lease Living is when you lease the land and own the home making it an affordable way to live in some of Australia’s most beautiful places. Hometown Australia has a range of Land Lease Living communities for those over 50 with a range of amenities and affordable preloved and new homes to choose. With no exit fees, council rates or stamp duty the Land Lease Living model assists in financial freedom plus you keep 100% capital gain when you choose to sell your home.

Can you tell us about your business? My professional journey has taken some interesting turns. For the past twenty-four years I’ve worked within both government and non-government sectors in frontline trauma relief positions.
Throughout these years, I’ve witnessed a great deal of human pain and suffering as well as the remarkable resilience of the human spirit, including witnessing those in helping professions going beyond the imaginable for others.
The desire to be present for others in the most effective, unique and personal way had been bubbling up inside me. Parallel to my work, being a Vedic meditator, and feeling the endless benefits from it, I initially completed the prerequisites for teacher training here in Australia, in Sydney with Stephanie Colman. After that, my request to go to Northern India, Himalayas for three months to intensively train and certify as a Teacher of Vedic Meditation was accepted by my teacher Thom Knoles. It’s where I’ve accepted the responsibility of teaching this simple, effortless transcending technique.
Despite its ancient roots, Vedic Meditation is perfectly designed to be practiced by busy people in today’s modern times. Once you complete the in-person course, you are completely self-sufficient. At its core, Vedic
Meditation is a powerful technique that changes how our nervous systems operate on a daily basis and ultimately opens the door to a more balanced and happier existence. I have been sharing it with wonderful people on the Coffs Coast and beyond for close to a year now. Additionally, I have integrated it into my existing clinical practice where I offer novel therapeutic approaches such as Optimal & Evidence Based EFT Emotional Freedom Techniques, HeartMath system and clinical supervision to health professionals and those from related fields.
What’s your favourite part of the work you do? There’s no greater joy than introducing Vedic meditation to someone new. I love facilitating weekly group meditation evenings. It’s rewarding to see local meditators and my clients thrive and live life to its full potential. Supporting health professionals through reflective practice has always been close to my heart.
Who is your greatest influence in business? Firstly, my teacher, Thom who is the leading authority on Vedic Meditation and pre-eminent Master of it, who connects me to the lineage of teachers and the Vedic tradition. Thom has been a teacher of this technique since the late sixties and continues to teach presently. Stef, inspired me from the moment we met over an introductory talk. She later taught me to meditate in an in-person course, the one I
now offer to those wanting to learn.
The positive influence of all local Vedic meditators, and my other clients, their presence is my constant inspiration. It goes without saying that my family and close friends provide unwavering support.
What do you love about living and working on the Coffs Coast? Coffs Coast has been my home since 2001, and I cannot envision being anywhere else. Nature shows up differently here. I love how warm-hearted, and friendly locals are. I feel fortunate.
What piece of advice would you give to women making their way in the business world? Begin by pursuing the desires that arise when you’re at your most peaceful, calm state; these are likely your true calling. Prioritise self-care, don’t entertain negativity, surround yourself with uplifting individuals, and strive to uplift others as well. From that foundation, everything else will naturally evolve and align.

As our children approach kindergarten, we all ask ourselves, “Is this the right school for my child?” This question often sparks lively conversations among friends and family. Similarly, across the Coffs Coast and surrounds, families are grappling with these decisions not just for kindergarten but also for Year 5, Year 7, and Year 11.
My wife and I come from country towns like Mungindi and Temora and asked ourselves a similar question. We wanted a primary school that reflected our own experiences, where we knew the teachers, and they knew our children. We also sought a faith-based school, just as our parents did for us. I encourage families to begin these important discussions early.
When selecting a school, consider the following key areas:
Choose a school that values equity, voice, and daily impact. Reports and assessment matter, but values matter more. The right school supports each child’s unique needs, ensuring fairness, not sameness. It creates a culture where students, families, and staff feel heard and respected. Strong leadership listens first and it’s the small daily moments, from greetings to classroom care, that shape a child’s future. Look for a school that invests in connection every day.
School environment and culture: A positive,
inclusive school culture encourages student engagement and wellbeing. Look for schools that actively promote respect, diversity, and community involvement.
Extra curricular opportunities and holistic development: A diverse and enriching range of extra curricular activities empowers students to discover new talents, pursue their passions, and grow beyond the classroom. Whether excelling in sports, shining on stage in drama or dance or music, or stepping up as leaders, schools should be encouraging students to thrive in every aspect of their personal and creative development.
Academic programs: It is important that a school’s curriculum supports your child’s individual needs and interests. Programs that focus on foundational skills in literacy and numeracy in primary school and continue to expand in high school are crucial and need to be met with a broad range of subjects and electives.
Quality facilities: Modern and well-maintained facilities enhance the overall educational experience for students. Schools need to invest in cutting-edge classrooms, science labs, sports facilities, innovative spaces and performing arts spaces to strongly support student learning. Community involvement: Schools that encourage parental engagement create a collaborative environment that benefits student development. Schools should welcome parents
to be involved in their child’s learning journey. This can be through teacher communication, or events such as assemblies, community days, and service projects. This sense of partnership enhances the school experience for everyone, especially students.
Academic excellence: A truly great school inspires curiosity and a genuine love for learning. By delivering a challenging, engaging, and future-focused curriculum, students are encouraged to think critically, push boundaries, and reach their full academic potential, creating a culture that nurtures lifelong learners.
Strong values: A thriving school community is built on shared values. At BDC, our core values foster a culture of inclusivity, respect, and belonging, where we hope every student feels seen, supported, and connected. These values are not just words, they guide our daily interactions and shape a positive environment that promotes wellbeing and strong relationships.
Guiding Philosophy: A school’s philosophy is the foundation for everything it stands for. At BDC, our holistic approach combines academic ambition with personal growth and community engagement, this is the BDC Way. Schools need to shape students who are not only worldready in terms of knowledge and skills, but also emotionally intelligent, socially responsible, and equipped for life beyond the classroom and a future unimagined.

Fusion is an annual festival held in person across Southern Cross University’s main campuses and online, designed to foster a sense of belonging, inclusion, and intercultural understanding.
The festivities at this year’s Coffs Harbour Fusion Festival began with a Welcome to Country at the Hogbin Drive campus, followed by an energetic line-up of live performances that showcased traditional and contemporary dances from Latin America, the Ezidi community, Indonesia, Myanmar and Malaysia.
At the festival’s heart was the universal language that unites us all: food. Stalls offered a delicious range of dishes, including EthioAfrican plates, Burmese favourites, sushi rolls, Ethiopian coffee, samosas and, of course, a classic Aussie BBQ.
Coffs Harbour Master of Nursing student Yingjie Cai said the Fusion Festival was a fun day on campus and the highlight of the academic year.
“You see all the different cultures through
traditional clothes, dancing, and amazing food. Everyone’s so proud to share where they come from. It really makes you feel like part of a big, diverse family.”
The Fusion Cookbook is collated in the months leading up to the event and features recipes submitted by students and staff, along with the stories and traditions behind each dish.
“Food has a unique way of bringing people together,” said Dr Chithira Johnson, Director of Student Support & Success.
“Sharing these recipes is more than just food. It’s about embracing different cultures, stories, and traditions that make our university such a vibrant and inclusive place.”
Yingjie contributed a beloved recipe from home: Mei Cai Kou Rou, or Braised Pork Belly with Preserved Vegetables, a classic Chinese dish passed down through generations.
Mei Cai Kou Rou is particularly popular in the provinces of Hunan and Jiangsu. Known for its tender, caramelised pork and glossy, rich sauce, it’s a staple at family celebrations.
“My family enjoys this dish on special festivals, such as Chinese New Year,” Yingjie said.
“The red colour symbolises prosperity and happiness, making it a festive favourite.”
Now in her second year of a postgraduate nursing qualification, Yingjie said she has found a strong sense of belonging in both the university and the local community.
“I feel really lucky to be a student at Southern Cross University,” she said.
“The support has been great, we have First Year Advisers who help with both study and life issues, and there are lots of activities and clubs to get involved in.
“It makes settling in so much easier.”
Coffs Harbour has also become a cherished home for Yingjie.
“I love the beaches, the environment, and the friendly people, it’s a great place to live and study,” she said.
Keep an eye out for the 2025 SCU Fusion Festival Cookbook launch. In the meantime, here’s a sneak peek of Yingjie Cai’s family favourite Pork Belly dish (condensed version)!
(Braised Pork Belly with Preserved Vegetables)
Pork belly (500g)
Dried preserved mustard greens (80g)
Ginger (5 slices)
Garlic (3 cloves, minced)
Cooking wine (1 tbsp)
Light soy sauce (2 tbsp)
Dark soy sauce (1 tbsp)
Oyster sauce (1 tbsp)
Rock sugar or white sugar (10g)
Salt & white pepper (to taste)
Star anise (1) & small cinnamon stick
Cooking oil as needed
Finely chopped spring onions or scallions for garnish (optional)
Method:
Prepare Pork Belly: Blanch pork belly with ginger and cooking wine for 10 mins. Rinse, pat dry, prick the skin, brush with dark soy sauce, and let sit for 10 mins.
Pan-fry pork belly skin-side down until golden brown and slightly crispy (about 2-3 mins). Brown the other sides, cool, then slice (0.5cm thick).
Soak mustard greens for 30 mins, rinse well, and chop. Stir-fry with garlic, ginger, star anise, cinnamon, soy sauce, pepper, and sugar, until fragrant.
Layer pork (skin down) in a bowl, top with greens. Drizzle oyster sauce, soy sauce, a bit of salt and sugar, and add enough water just to cover the mustard greens.
Place the bowl in a steamer over boiling water. Cover and steam for 1.5–2 hours until pork is tender. Drain excess liquid into a bowl and set aside. Invert greens and pork onto a plate to serve.
Optional Sauce: Thicken the liquid you have placed aside in a small saucepan on low heat with a mix of cornstarch and water and drizzle over the dish. Garnish with chopped scallions.

Each summer, I try to get in the habit of swimming at the beach every morning.
I attempt to keep this going for as long as I possibly can into the autumn.
There is no better feeling than waking up on a warm summer morning, meeting friends at the beach car park and diving into a wave just as the sun is coming up.
Fish about a foot long can give you a bit of a fright if they brush up against you unexpectedly! It’s a morning ritual which does wonders for your body, your mind and your soul.
The other rewarding aspect is that you’re renewing your friendships with the other early morning swimmers, all the while counting your blessings to be living in such a beautiful part of the world.
The Coffs Coast is still celebrating Woolgoolga’s recently announced status as mainland Australia’s best beach.
We always knew our local beaches were world class and to have that officially confirmed by Tourism Australia was wonderful news for the
Woolgoolga community and the entire Coffs Coast.
Woolgoolga Beach is renowned for its stunning beauty and for being family friendly and this accolade is helping to showcase all the Coffs Coast has to offer to the world.
This got me thinking about what makes our local beaches so great, and what differentiates them from the thousands of beautiful beaches everywhere else in Australia.
When it comes to swimming, I like a nice gentle slope into the water like at Woolgoolga, and a medium swell – powerful enough to body surf, and a water temperature in the 20s.
able to park our car and walk a very short distance to the beach, even in peak times. Even in the middle of summer, you can be a mere five minutes from town and sometimes have a beach all to yourself.
Woolgoolga Beach is renowned for its stunning beauty and for being family friendly and this accolade is helping to showcase all the Co s Coast has to o er to the world.
No one likes seaweed, either in the shallows or on the sand, but its build-up and subsequent breakdown are natural processes, after all. We’re blessed here on the Coffs Coast to be
Also, compared to places like Port Macquarie, our beaches are relatively long and sandy, and not too rocky.
Sydney’s beaches, on the other hand, are too small for their population. I remember being at Bondi on a busy day once with 40,000 other Sydneysiders. I know what I prefer!
But as great as the Coffs Coast’s beaches are, I’m sorry to say that as the winter months edge closer, ‘fair weather’ swimmers like me pack up our board shorts (no budgie smugglers for me) until next summer.
What do you love most about our local beaches?
Can you share your journey into the mortgage broking industry and what inspired you to become a mortgage broker? Absolutely! My journey into the mortgage broking industry wasn’t something I planned from the start, it evolved naturally from my passion for helping people and a growing interest in finance and property.
Before becoming a mortgage broker, I worked predominantly in business banking. Over time, I found myself drawn more and more to the financial side of things, especially when
it came to helping customers achieve their goals. I saw how complex and overwhelming the lending process could be for everyone, especially first-time buyers, and I wanted to be someone who could simplify it and make it more approachable.
What really inspired me to become a mortgage broker was seeing how lifechanging owning a home can be. Whether it’s helping a young couple buy their first home, or supporting an investor to grow their portfolio, being part of that journey is incredibly rewarding.
What qualifications and certifications do you hold, and how do they enhance your practice? I hold a Diploma of Finance and Mortgage Broking, which has further deepened my understanding of complex lending scenarios, compliance requirements, and advanced loan structuring strategies.
How has your experience shaped your approach to helping clients with their financial goals? Over the years, my experience, particularly my 7 years in business banking, has significantly shaped my approach to helping clients achieve their financial goals. During that time, I worked closely
with a wide range of customers, many of whom had complex financial structures and diverse needs. That experience taught me how to navigate intricate financial situations, structure lending strategically, and think beyond the basics to find tailored solutions.
employed, juggling multiple income streams, or looking to grow a property portfolio, I have the insight and skills to guide them through even the most complex lending scenarios. Ultimately, it’s about building trust, providing real value, and being a long-term partner in their financial journey, not just someone who secures a loan.
How do you tailor your financial strategies to meet the unique needs of different clients? Tailoring financial strategies to each client is at the core of what I do. No two clients are the same - everyone has different goals, financial situations, risk appetites, and timelines. That’s why I take a highly personalised approach from the very first conversation.
I start by taking the time to truly understand the client’s full financial picture, not just income and expenses, but also their lifestyle, future goals, family plans, or business objectives. This is especially important when working with self-employed clients, business owners, or those with complex income structures, where a one-size-fits-all solution just won’t work.
I start by taking the time to truly understand the client’s full financial picture— not just income and expenses, but also their lifestyle, future goals, family plans, or business objectives.
Once I’ve got a full understanding, I then research and recommend lender options and loan structures that align with their goals—whether that's maximising borrowing capacity, achieving flexibility, minimising repayments, or setting up for future investments. I also take into account factors like interest rate risk, offset account needs, fixed vs variable options, and exit strategies.
Education is a big part of this process too. I make sure clients understand not just what we're doing, but why, so they feel empowered and in control of their financial decisions.
always about getting to know them and understanding their goals. Before we even talk about products or lenders, I like to sit down for a discovery conversation where we go over their current financial position, lifestyle, shortand long-term goals, and any challenges they may be facing.
How do you help clients stay accountable to their financial goals? Helping clients stay accountable to their financial goals is a big part of what I do, and it goes well beyond just securing a loan. I see myself as a long-term partner in their financial journey, not just someone who helps with a one-off transaction.
Once we've set up a loan or strategy, I stay in touch through regular check-ins and reviews, especially around key milestones like fixed rate expiries, annual reviews, or changes in the market. This gives us the opportunity to make sure their loan is still working for them—and if it's not, we look at how we can adjust.
For my self-employed or business clients, I also work closely with their accountants or financial planners when needed, to make sure we’re all aligned and working toward the same bigger picture.
What role does financial literacy play in your work, and how do you educate your clients about it?
Financial literacy is about understanding the basics of how money works—whether it's budgeting, managing debt, or understanding the intricacies of loans and interest rates. I see my role as not just securing a loan for my clients, but also helping them become more financially literate. I take the time to explain concepts like how interest rates affect repayments, the difference between fixed and variable loans, or how loan features like offset accounts work. By educating clients on these fundamentals, they feel more confident in their decisions and are better equipped to manage their finances moving forward.

here are two types of aluminium boats, mass produced boats and premium quality tough plate boats. The second one is where Bar Crusher Boats sits. For Bar Crusher it’s about clever innovative design, quality workmanship, careful fit and thoughtful layout.
So “What is a plate aluminium boat?” Some manufacturers enjoy the confusion around the definition of a ‘plate boat’. By definition “A ‘plate boat’ is a boat that’s built using a properly constructed sub-floor frame; heavy-gauge, high-tensile 5083 aluminium cut from flat plate; and has a welded-in aluminium floor”. When a boat is used in a metre or more of wind chop or swell, it will be subjected to tremendous forces that will stress the hull. True plate aluminium boat construction ensures it won’t flex excessively. Excessive flex causes fatigue cracking, and a lesser-built boat will start to crack around the welds, split and ultimately fail.
So what sets Bar Crusher Boats apart from other Aluminium boats?
To start they are a TRUE plate boat!... the Bar Crusher's Rigideck® system featuring full-
depth, full-length longitudinal stringers and cross frames for a boxed and triangulated structure. This honeycomb structure enhances hull strength and durability, enabling the boat to withstand extreme forces while providing a sealed, easy-to-maintain floor.
Below the waterline is Bar Crusher's Waveslicer® hull featuring a smooth, deep-V that slices through waves providing a soft ride even in challenging conditions, ensuring a predictable and safe boating experience. Once you’ve stopped driving, the Bar Crusher's Quickflow® water ballast system enhances stability at rest by filling a keel cavity with water when the boat stops, lowering it into the water. Upon acceleration, the ballast is quickly expelled, allowing for a smooth and rapid transition back onto the plane.
When you’ve finished having fun in your Bar Crusher, the Bar Catch® system simplifies boat launching and retrieval by engaging its winch eye on the boat when driven onto the trailer. This innovation eliminates the need for assistance to detach the winch strap and safety chain, enhancing convenience and reducing stress at the ramp. As we say “if your boat is easy to use your going to use it more often!”

Andy Hawkes started Moku
Designs with the philosophy of building tiny homes that are “free from convention, full of possibility.” His tiny homes, eco-arks and van fitouts provide a way of living outside the box; perfectly combining beauty and functionality.
Ha bit about how Moku Design Co came to life? What inspired you to start building tiny houses, eco-arks, and van fit-outs?
Moku is still a baby, but she has an older sister - Fulcrum Designs and Staging. For the past decade, we’ve been designing and building stages for festivals all over the world. That experience shaped our eye for form, function, and flow. Now, we’re bringing that same creative energy and aesthetic to tiny livingcrafting tiny homes, eco-arks, and van fit-outs that are as beautiful as they are practical. The philosophy behind Moku is really beautiful homes - “free from convention, full of possibility.” What does that mean to you personally?
To me, “free from convention, full of possibility” means reimagining what a home can be. We want to design living spaces that are not only functional, but also interesting and beautiful - spaces that inspire. A lot of tiny homes out there are just rectangles on
wheels. But with thoughtful design and a strong creative vision, we believe you can build something truly unique - something that feels alive, not just efficient.
With the housing crisis impacting so many Australians, how do you see tiny living and mobile living helping people reclaim their freedom and stability?
By letting go of our addiction to “stuff” and embracing minimal living, we can reclaim a sense of freedom.
More and more people are questioning the traditional housing model we’ve been sold - the one tied to insane debt and decades-long mortgages. Tiny and mobile living offers a real alternative. It gives people the chance to own their space, live more intentionally, and break free from the pressures of the system. It’s not just about downsizing, it’s about reclaiming

your time, energy, and independence.
What’s been one of your most memorable or meaningful builds so far and why?
Our most memorable build so far has definitely been our latest, the 11m Dreamliner. It’s a real statement piece, with an emphasis on curves, natural tones, and a sense of flow throughout the space. One of the standout features is a custom Venetian plaster splashback which is honestly, a work of art in itself. This build really captures what Moku is all about: thoughtful M O K U D E S I G N S
design, natural materials, and creating spaces that feel alive.
Moku isn’t just about shelter, it’s about a lifestyle shift. How do your designs encourage people to live more simply, sustainably, or intentionally?
layering in the creative
is build really captures what Moku is all about: thoughtful design, natural materials, and creating spaces that feel alive.
By downsizing and living closer to nature, we start to strip away the barriers, both physical and mental, that come with conventional living. Our designs encourage a lifestyle that’s more intentional and connected. With less space, people naturally simplify. With more flexibility, they live on their own terms, and by choosing sustainable materials and smart off-grid options, they reduce their footprint. Moku isn’t just about building homes; it’s about helping people reconnect with what really matters.
What’s the creative process like when someone comes to you with a vision? How do you help shape that into a space that really works for them?
I love it when someone comes in with a clear vision; that’s where the magic starts. We begin by focusing on the essentials: how the space needs to function as a home. Things like layout, flow, storage, and comfort. Once
we’ve nailed that foundation, we start elements, the textures, tones, and unique design features that bring the personality to life. It’s a real collaboration, and the goal is always to create something that not only works beautifully, but feels like them.
Eco-conscious design seems to be at the heart of Moku. Can you tell us about some of the sustainable materials or features you like to include in your builds?
Sustainability is a core priority in every Moku build, but our Eco Ark range really brings that philosophy to life. These designs feature our signature gothic arch shape, which isn’t just beautiful, it’s efficient. Because the roof is the walls, we significantly reduce the amount of materials needed. Each Eco Ark is fully insulated and can be fitted with all the off-grid essentials - solar power, water tanks, and composting toilets making them ideal for low-impact living without compromising on comfort.
What are some of the biggest misconceptions people have about tiny or alternative living, and how do you help shift that perspective?
One of the biggest misconceptions is that we need a big house full of stuff to be happy. But in reality, that often just leads to more stress,
more debt, and more disconnection. At Moku, we aim to challenge that mindset by offering unique, inspiring alternatives—spaces that help people reconnect with nature, live more simply, and reduce their environmental footprint. It’s about showing that less really can be moremore freedom, more intention, more joy.
What’s your favourite part of the designand-build journey?
I honestly enjoy every part of the journey, but design is where my heart is. There’s something really special about dreaming big within the limits of a tiny space. It challenges your creativity in the best way, and the real payoff? Seeing the client’s face when we bring that vision to life. That moment never gets old. And finally, what advice would you give to someone dreaming of a simpler life, but unsure where to start?
Start small - literally. Go and stay in a tiny home to get a real feel for the lifestyle. Experience what it’s like to live with less, but in a space that’s well-designed and intentional. And if you’re curious, reach out to us at Moku, we’re always happy to organise a tour of one of our builds and chat about what’s possible. Sometimes all it takes is stepping inside to realise how freeing it can be.
Thanks Andy.
Joel Livesey is the guy behind Joel’s Jungle Maintenance; a local gardening, cleanup and pressure washing business. During the recent extreme weather events Joel o ered his services free of charge to those in need, and his kindness and community spirit was noticed by many.
Hi Joel, can you tell us a bit about Joel’s Jungle Maintenance and what inspired you to start the business?
I started this business in Brisbane a few years ago after watching some satisfying videos on YouTube. I would binge watch big cleanup videos or pressure washing videos and thought I'd give it a go. When I told my partner I was starting a mowing business she couldn't stop laughing because I was too lazy to do our own lawn. As a veteran-owned and operated business, how have your past experiences influenced the way you run things?
My past experiences have taught me a lot of things but the main three which I
transition into my business are discipline, teamwork and most importantly work-life balance. We only work 4 days a week, having Wednesdays and weekends off. This gives us enough rest for the big yard cleanups we do. I find it's great for morale too.
What services do you offer, and what kind of clients do you typically work with around the Coffs Coast?
We understand the struggles people go through, so there’s never any judgement from us. Plus, big jungle cleanups are what we enjoy!
I offer acreage/large acreage mowing, large residential mowing, yard cleanups and pressure washing.
A lot of the clients we have are people that have let their yards go out of control due to various reasons. Most of the time they're so embarrassed letting someone see the state of their yard. We understand the struggles people go through, so there's never any judgement from us. Plus, big jungle cleanups are what we enjoy!
Besides that, most of our clients are residential homeowners, but I'll be trying to fill our books up with more acreage clients and commercial properties from now on.
Recently, you offered free assistance to community members ahead of the Tropical Cyclone Alfred severe weather event, what motivated you to do that?
During challenging times, like weather disasters, the motivation often comes from a sense of duty and empathy. Back in 2009 my mother lost her car in the floods which made stuff a lot harder, and I know it caused a lot of stress. I think seeing others struggle ignited a desire to lend a hand and support those in need.
While I was in the Defence Force a lot of the job was natural disaster relief, so I've done quite a bit of filling sandbags and helping communities. It's also a nice feeling knowing you've helped someone too.
Spending 30 minutes out of your day to fill up a few sandbags for someone who’s elderly or that can’t do it themselves may just save their house from flooding.
What kind of help did people need the most, and what was the response from the community?
I wasn't expecting the post I made on Facebook to blow up how it did. I was just sitting there one night and thought 'what am I going to do tomorrow since I can't do my mowing schedule as it's way too wet'.
I then saw other businesses making posts about helping after the storms hit and I thought this is the time to do something for the community free of charge before the weather gets bad.
The main jobs I was called for were clearing trees and branches from glass windows or from scratching or falling on people's cars. There were a couple of elderly people that needed help setting generators up as well and I also did a bunch of gutter cleans. How important do you think it is for small businesses to step up and help in
I don't think it's important for a small business to step up, I think it's important for ANYONE that's able bodied to step up for the community when in need. For example, spending 30 minutes out of your day to fill up a few sandbags for someone who's elderly or that can't do it themselves may just save their house from flooding.
What have been some of the biggest challenges you've faced?
Dealing with people that expect a job to be extremely cheap is my hardest challenge. Being a legit business I have a lot of overheads which they don't think about. Sure, you can get people cheaper than me but a lot of these people don't last in this industry mainly because they don't charge correctly. There's a lot of people running around here with no insurance or they're so unreliable that they never turn up. A lot of my calls are from people whose regular mower man/gardener just stopped turning
up without any warning.
Reliability, professionalism and quality of work is what we strive to be known for. On the flip side, what’s the most rewarding part of what you do?
Clearing overgrown properties for clients that have been struggling always feels good, but taking before and after photos of the huge cleanups is the most rewarding for me. While you're midway through the job you forget how much you've done. It's good to look back and be like ‘jeez we did all that!’
Where do you see Joel’s Jungle Maintenance in the next few years? Do you have plans to expand or take on new projects?
I've just expanded into large acreage and commercial jobs. I've done this full time for a little over a year and I've already smashed my previous goals I set. I'm currently looking at getting some earthmoving equipment too which will help with the big cleanups.
Hopefully in the next few years I'll have a few large contracted jobs and a few more employees.
Thanks Joel.

What Are Lifestyle Properties?
Lifestyle properties are residential properties located in rural or semi-rural areas, often featuring larger land sizes, natural surroundings and a focus on outdoor living, peace and quiet and privacy. These properties often include acreage, space for recreation and hobbies such as farming, gardening, horses, motorbikes, fishing, boating, four-wheel driving etc, and are typically situated near beaches, mountains, bush, rivers/creeks or other scenic landscapes.
On the Coffs Coast there is an abundance of lifestyle properties on the market with key areas of demand including Urunga/Mylestrom, Bellingen/Dorrigo, Sawtell, Gennifer, Bonville, Orara Valley, Coramba, Nana Glen, Glenreagh, Korora West, Sapphire West, Moonee West & Bucca to name a few.
Why Are Lifestyle Properties Gaining Popularity?
The “Sea Change” Movement:
• Increasing numbers of people are looking to escape the pressures of city living and embrace a lifestyle that offers tranquillity and connection with nature.
• Coastal locations like Coffs offer the perfect balance of a relaxed lifestyle and access to urban
amenities making it an attractive destination for people seeking a sea change.
Work-from-Home Flexibility:
• The rise of remote working has played a significant role in the surge of interest in lifestyle properties. With the ability to work from home, many are no longer tethered to urban centres.
• Properties with space for a dedicated home office or a creative studio are in high demand.
Desire for Space and Privacy:
• The ongoing global health crisis has made many reconsider their living situations. People are seeking larger properties with more room for personal activities, whether it’s for gardening, home gyms, or simply more space for hobbies and recreational activities.
• Lifestyle properties often offer a higher level of privacy compared to suburban homes in urban areas
The Coffs Coast is A Prime Location
Natural Beauty and Scenic Appeal:
• Coffs Harbour and the surrounding areas are known for their stunning beaches, lush rainforests and pristine waterways. Lifestyle properties in these areas offer residents the chance to live close to nature.
• Whether it’s oceanfront views, rural acreage or bushland, the variety of landscapes in the Coffs Coast makes it an ideal location for those seeking peace and serenity.
Access to Amenities:
• Coffs Harbour offers a range of services, including excellent educational facilities, golf courses, shopping centres and medical facilities.
• The Coffs Coast is well-connected with good transport links to major cities like Sydney and Brisbane.
Impact on the Property Market
Price Growth:
• The demand for lifestyle properties in the region has driven up property prices, particularly in areas just outside Coffs Harbour. This is good news for current property owners as values continue to rise.
Increased Development:
• Developers are beginning to cater to this demand by building more lifestyle-focused communities and properties. This includes larger homes with sustainable features, eco-friendly designs and easy access to nature trails and local parks.
Ahead
The rise of lifestyle properties on the Coffs Coast is not just a passing trend, but a significant shift in the way people view home ownership and work-life balance. As the area continues to grow in popularity, it’s likely that lifestyle properties will become a defining feature of the region’s property landscape for years to come.
