Troy Cassar-Daley has been writing, recording and performing music for over 30 years and is known as one of Australia’s most loved country musicians. Troy grew up here on the Coffs Coast and will be playing a hometown show at Coffs C.ex on Friday 7th June to celebrate his latest album Between The Fires, which he wrote at his late mother’s home at Halfway Creek.
Hi Troy. Can you share a bit about your early years and what inspired you to throw yourself into your love of music and want to make a career out of it?
My early years were spent around Grafton, Coffs Harbour, Halfway Creek, Coutts Crossing and Glenreagh. It was the encouragement of all these places that got us started really and the more we played, the more encouragement we got. Once I moved up to Tamworth that was a pivotal time for me as a country musician. It was there I think my path became more obvious and I wouldn’t change a thing. Good and bad!
You've had a long and successful career in country music. What keeps you motivated and passionate about creating music after all these years? I would have to say the stories continue to get me motivated to write things down. Also, my big love of playing guitar
really opens the door to writing songs for me. The melodies and stories come together and hopefully you feel you still have something important to say. That’s what gets me out of bed every day. Your music often reflects themes of Australian life and culture, and you are known for your incredible storytelling. What inspires you to draw from these experiences in your songwriting?
I think growing up with divorced parents from two really different cultures, one being Indigenous the other being Maltese. I learned a lot from both sides even though I mainly grew up with my Indigenous family. The stories and songs that resonated through both sides of my

family were the things that inspired me to pick up a pen and guitar in the first place. My childhood was quite different, and I think that forms you as an adult. Could you share with us what some of your personal highlights or stand out moments have been over the three decades of your career?
The first one that comes to mind is receiving my first Golden Guitar from Slim Dusty back in 1996. Having a chance to tour with The Highwaymen and Merle Haggard were definitely highlights, and some of the shows we got to do on the same bill as Slim Dusty were very, very inspiring from the Mid North Coast.

‘Between the Fires was recorded at my late Mum's old house at Halfway Creek. It is full of emotion and lots of stories that take the listener for rides up the road, turning left and right, with themes of everyday life that we face in Australia.
You've received numerous awards throughout your career. Is there a particular accolade or recognition that holds special significance for you?
When I received my first ARIA Award in ‘95, I was pretty blown away. It was a very humble album - my first record - and to be honest, I didn’t expect anything to come from that, award wise.
But I never look back - 40 x Golden Guitars later, I’m still really surprised that I still love this job as much as I did when I first started. You would struggle to find anyone in that position over the last 35 years, I think.
You’ve just released your latest album Between The Fires, can you tell us a bit about the album and your experience writing and recording it?
Between the Fires was recorded at my late mum’s old house at Halfway Creek. It is full of emotion and lots of stories that take the listener for rides up the road, turning left and right, with themes of everyday life that we face in Australia. It was such an inspirational place to make a record for me, because it was my childhood home, and creating music in that place, I discovered, was very much a full circle moment for me.
The show we play in Coffs Harbour will be special. There will be a lot of family and friends in the audience and that always motivates me to dig a little deeper.
As I rehearse the songs to go into this show, I’m always thinking what will be best for the crowd sitting out the front and that’s exactly the sort of show I’ll be bringing to my old stomping ground.
As a proud Gumbaynggirr/Bundjalung man, what is it like for you touring in this part of the country?
Every time I get off the plane at Coffs Harbour Airport, air caresses my face and fills my heart with joy like no other place in the world.
The show we play in Coffs Harbour will be special. There will be a lot of family and friends in the audience and that always motivates me to dig a little deeper.
The songs took a while to develop, but once that river started to flow, I stood back and let it do its thing. It was all finished in two weeks at that humble farmhouse.
You are playing at the C.ex in Coffs Harbour as part of your Between The Fires tour, what can we expect from this show?
It’s my mother’s, grandmother’s and great grandmother’s Country.
And the place always greets me with this beautiful feeling, always saying welcome home.
There’s no place like it and I’m proud to come down and share what I’ve learned as a travelling musician with everyone back home.
Where can we find out more about the Coffs Harbour Show or get tickets?
Folks can go straight to my website, pick the show you want to see and buy your tickets online. Or you can go and buy them at C.ex face-to-face in Coffs Harbour.
I can’t wait to get there. I think my wife is coming down with me as well to share the experience of travelling through my beautiful home land. I will have many stories to share with her, so I hope I don’t bore her too much with all my little anecdotes.
Shelley Parker-Chan is the author of the Sunday Times and USA Today bestselling historical fantasy duology The Radiant Emperor. Shelley will be discussing their work at this year’s Bellingen Readers & Writers festival as well as moderating an event called ‘Wild Fiction’. BELLINGEN READERS & WRITERS
Hi Shelley. Your bestselling historical fantasy duology The Radiant Emperor has received some incredible awards and accolades, where did the ideas for this story stem from and how did that develop into writing the novels?
I’ve long been fascinated by monks as people who set aside worldly interests in favour of pursuing ‘goodness’ according to a particular set of rules. But even more than a monk, I love the idea of a bad monk: someone who can’t, or doesn’t want to, overcome their worldly ambition and desires. As I researched possible settings for a historical story, I came across the fascinating story of Zhu Yuanzhang: a man who began life as a peasant in Mongoloccupied China, spent time as a monk before becoming a rebel commander, then finally became the founding Emperor of the Ming Dynasty. So he was my bad monk, but I also realised I wanted to twist the story. What if I took this man, whose ambition and capacity for violence led him to become the ultimate patriarch, and made him not a man? How would that change the meaning of his ambition, and rise, and rule?
Can you share what events you will be part of at the Bellingen Readers and
Writers festival, and what we can expect from them?
I’m very excited to be moderating an event called ‘Wild Fiction’, featuring Siang Lu, Kate Mildenhall and Max Barry in conversation. They’re all authors who are doing some truly spectacular things with genre fiction, so it’s going to be a treat to hear them each talk about how they push the envelope in terms of ideas and literary structures. I’ll also be doing an event to talk with Amy Lovat about my own work.
What do you enjoy most about getting out amongst it at events like this? What is it like discussing your work with readers and writers in a setting like this? Events are a kind of conversation, so each one is unique. I enjoy speaking to superfans who are already familiar with my work, and I equally enjoy bringing my work to new audiences who are interested to learn more about Asian-inspired genre storytelling. I always find it particularly nice when there’s not a rigid separation between authors and readers at these kinds of events,
because obviously all of us authors are readers too, and instead of speaking ‘to’ people I enjoy having two-way conversations about where my stories fit among all the exciting other work they might be reading from Australian and international authors.
What message do you hope to convey to attendees of the Bellingen Readers & Writers Festival, both aspiring writers and avid readers alike?
They’re all authors who are doing some truly spectacular things with genre fiction, so it’s going to be a treat to hear them each talk about how they push the envelope...
I’m a fantasy author, and I’m a passionate advocate for the kinds of genre fiction that are often very commercially successful, but tends to be underestimated when it comes to literary merit. Just because stories are escapist or fantastical or speculative, doesn’t mean they’re trivial. Some of the best explorations of human nature I’ve read have been in novels that are shelved as romance, horror, science fiction, fantasy, crime, or thriller, rather than literary fiction. I’d love for writers to be able to write genre fiction unapologetically, and for readers to be able to read it without embarrassment.
In a career spanning four decades, Wendy Harmer has been a pioneer for women in media as a journalist, columnist, radio broadcaster, TV host, author, playwright and comic performer. She will be joining a host of incredible speakers at this year’s Bellingen Readers & Writers festival and we are looking forward to hearing about her memoir Lies My Mirror Told Me.
Hi Wendy. As well as an incredibly diverse career in media, you’re also the author of dozens of books, you’ve written plays, an opera libretto and been a columnist for a number of magazines and newspapers. What will you be sharing with us at the festival and what events you will be part of?
I’m taking part in three sessions – one in conversation about my memoir “Lies My Mirror Told Me” and I promise to make you laugh, a lot, especially since my partner-in-crime will be the celebrated cartoonist and wicked wit, Cathy Wilcox! The other two sessions look at the genre of memoir and how to get laughs on the page, so something of a theme there. The Bellingen Readers & Writers Festival has a rich history of celebrating literature and fostering creativity. What excites you most about being involved with this event?
As all the authors will tell you, it’s so rewarding to be up close and personal with readers. To hear what resonates with your work and field the sometimes, curly questions.
regional centres these days and when you look at the topics on offer for discussion, which run the gamut of the political, cultural, fantastical and matters psychological and philosophical – no wonder they’re bringing in the crowds, all eager for something more nourishing than the current arid political debate offers. At myriad music, food and art festivals there’s a chance to fill the void left by half-dead churches, political parties and irrelevant media outlets. Newspapers are disappearing, TV and radio stations run syndicated content from the capital cities. Politics comes by remote control from party HQ. Social media doesn’t offer that same real connection. So, here’s the chance to connect, explore and reaffirm who we are and what sort of society we aspire to be.
Are there any specific authors or literary works that have had a significant impact on you personally?
There is quite the circuit for writers’ festivals in
I’m looking forward to re-connecting with my old friend Bruce Pascoe, author of “Dark Emu”, a truly seismic book which has changed perceptions of the lives of Aboriginal
Australians. Likewise, Kate Grenville has rewritten colonial times with women front and centre. Two perspectives that we were sorely lacking.
In your opinion, why is it important to support events like the Bellingen Readers & Writers Festival?
As all the authors will tell you, it’s so rewarding to be up close and personal with readers. To hear what resonates with your work, and field the sometimes, curly questions. But more than that, such festivals bring visitors to town and all the benefits that go with it, so I accept as many invitations as I can. This year, as well as the City fests, I’ve been to Dalby in the Western Downs, QLD; Sorrento in coastal Victoria and Margaret River in WA. As a country girl myself, I love to see these towns alive and jumping. What message do you hope to convey to attendees of the Bellingen Readers & Writers Festival, both aspiring writers and avid readers alike?
Keep on reading and exploring ideas. Keep your mind open to new perspectives. Never lose your sense of wonder and, above all, have fun! Don’t be shy, come up and say “G’day”! Where can we find out more about the festival and getting involved? It’s all here ... bellingenwritersfestival.com.au

Gavin Vitullo is a painter and sculptor who finds endless inspiration in the natural world around us. He chooses to use as many naturally occurring materials as possible and minimises the use of power tools, reaching for hand tools to work his large wooden sculptures instead.
Hey Gavin, could you share a bit about your background and when you first got into experimenting with artforms?
My family history is a combination of fine arts and craftsmanship. On my Mother’s side her father and grandfather were considered master practitioners of the Arts, with a vast array of skills ranging from sign writing to
stained glass windows and classically styled painting.
On the other hand my Father’s side were industrious, resourceful, physical and hands-on with wood never far from reach. Therefore I consider myself a harmonious result of these combined family traits.
As far as experimenting with intentional art forms though, that began as a young boy exploring the natural world of stone and wood.
I would walk alone through the playground and fill my pockets with sticks and stones, I was deeply curious and sentimental within the world.
Looking back I recall carving those sticks by hand into small spear-like totems. How would you describe the type of artwork you do?
I am very much a painter/sculptor working with form and energy and in an abstracted expressive logic. I want the viewer to really
You
feel the presence of the human hand at work, be it on the linen and board I paint upon, or the stone and wood I carve within.
Sculpturally though, I would say I blur the lines between Mother Nature's hand and my own whilst holding true the intention of combining concept and craftsmanship harmoniously.
A lot of these sculptural works are an amalgamation of stone and wood balanced poetically and totemically in unison.
I see the elements as a means to bring horizon lines sympathetically together, much like a temple or tree does in nature.
What are some of your favourite mediums and techniques to use?
Wood is fundamental to my existence.
I love everything about it. The notion that you can walk into any landscape and find a fallen giant (or part thereof) to honourably work

with.
From creek to coast I explore it all, open to the potential of finding Earth's timeless treasures.
I work directly through my hands, thus limiting the use of power tools, opting instead for hand tools such as the hammer, the chisel, the hatchet, the draw knife, the rasp and the hand saw. The energetic impressions these tools leave upon the surface of wood are an honourable reminder of time past and the power of artful intention.
Burning my work is also something I implement into my process. I use the flame as a painter would use a brush. Very quickly I can transform the aesthetic of a piece into a new state of being.
It is also significant that fire regenerates life in nature, what a beautiful cycle to remember indeed!
Continued over..
Originating from Newcastle, how would you describe the evolution of your work since being on the Coffs Coast?
The transition from Newcastle to the majestic Promised Lands was swift. Within a week I had packed up my home and studio in suburbia to arrive on a pristine property cocooned by ancient mountains, healing waters and grand solitude. This is everything I had been yearning
such as wood native to that particular region and so on...
The landscape plays a huge part in your art, how do you translate that into your pieces?
I am an artist working with the Earth. I recognise the complexities and hypocrisies of what it is to be a human in the world. I consider my footprint and try to create as mindfully as possible. For this reason, I create with wood that has fallen to Earth naturally, then allow myself to breathe new life into it artistically.
for in order to develop some of my more monumental ideas.
Larger wood, heavier stone and a vast landscape to place my earthly works within. I consider it an open-air temple of elements, the wind, the water, the light and the shadow, it all comes into effect.
Wherever I land, the environment I'm within informs my work. This becomes apparent through the mediums of my surroundings,
Sometimes I work directly in the landscape creating ephemeral works of art with nothing more than what my surroundings offer. No tools, just a curious nature and an empty hand and open mind as I like to put it.
I also like the thought of creating works that exist beyond the gallery walls too.
Art can exist anywhere!
Describe a typical day creating your work? What is your process like when working on a piece?
You
There is freedom in my process.
I am an extremely dedicated practitioner, yet allow myself to wander and immerse deeply within the landscape forming ideas, receiving inspiration, collecting materials and just being...
can walk into any landscape and find a fallen giant to honourably work with. From creek to coast I explore it all, open to the potential of finding Earth’s timeless treasures.
Sometimes inspiration arrives in the form of words, poetry tumbling like a river stone does, gathering momentum in the torrents. Other days I am kneeled before a heaving block of stone or hulking chunk of wood carving meditatively until daylight descends into night.
I consider every day and every work as a leap of faith. It takes a great deal of mettle to create continually in uncertainty, and this is what all true artists do.
Tell us how culture plays a part in your
work?
Art is culture. We are the keepers of time, space and matter. We document through uniqueness and give back our interpretations of the world. We are blessed to have one of the oldest living cultures in existence.
I have a deep admiration for the ways in which indigenous cultures value Earth and its natural resources. It is like living their ways is the truest art form that can be. The shelters, the clothing, the tools, all of it, and art and story is just as integral and vital to human survival as food and water is.
Since arriving here, I have embarked on
a monumental carved work honouring Gumbaynggir Country. It is a two metre Blackbutt log carved hollow and adorned with etched leaves and sealed with native resin. This piece titled Wind Blown (resounding through the ages) acts as a giant natural amplifier for the Yidaki (didgeridoo). Where can we find out more?
You can find me through instagram @ vitulloart
Contact me there directly for private viewings.
I am currently looking for new major gallery representation to coincide with our move here to the Bellingen Shire.
Charles Wolfson has been a Baseball lover since he was a kid, growing up in the USA. He started the Bellingen Brewers Club (recently renamed the North Coast Brewers) in 2013, and has been involved in the The Coffs Harbour Baseball Association for some time now. We sat down with him to find out more about the sport and its presence here on the Coffs Coast.
Hey Charles, tell us where your baseball journey began?
I’m an expat American (moved to Australia in 1986). I remember buying baseball cards (packs of 5 cards, each of a different major league player, with a stick of gum) at the age of 7. I saw my first major league game in Detroit at Tiger Stadium at the age of 10. It was a chilly Sunday doubleheader early in the season. We were sitting just behind the protective netting behind home plate. Late in the second game a batter fouled a ball back that just hooked around the edge of the netting and caught me flush in the forehead, knocking me out cold for a moment. I was taken down to a room under
the stands, checked out by a doctor and given a ball autographed by the entire team.
You have been playing for some time now, what do you enjoy most about the sport?
I’m not much of an athlete but I love playing, and coaching. Any time I do anything well – a hit, a fielding play, whatever – it’s really satisfying. And any time I can help a young player do that, and see the look of happiness on their face and the increase in confidence it brings them – that’s even better.
How would you best describe the competition here on the Coffs Coast and what teams make up the competitions?
Baseball is a bit of a “niche” sport here in Coffs, competing as it does in winter with
all the football codes, basketball and other sports. The Coffs Harbour Baseball Association has a junior program and two senior grades (A and B). There are four clubs in the Association – my club, the North Coast Brewers; the Coffs Harbour Allstars, Sawtell Dodgers and Woolgoolga Bluesox.
Our competition is open to all. We have highly-skilled and experienced players as well as players totally new to the sport and we have men and women, boys and girls, teens and seniors. Our club alone has one fatherdaughter and four father-son pairs.
Could you share a bit about the local comp and where you normally play?
All of our games are played on Saturdays at the Stadium Drive sports complex. There is
a competition similar in size to ours – the Hastings Association –in the Port Macquarie area. We’ve had discussions with them about starting some kind of inter-association play, but that hasn’t happened yet.
e unquestioned strength of our club isn’t any particular playing skill, but our culture and camaraderie. We are all there to enjoy playing and support each other, win or lose.
Junior training is held Tuesday afternoons, followed by senior training (with players from all clubs) under lights.
Each winter the NSW Baseball Association holds the NSW Country Championships in Sydney. Our association sends a team each year to play in the B Division championships, which we won last season. Coffs Harbour also hosted the NSW Country Junior Championships each of the last two years. You have been involved in the Bellingen Brewers Club for a while now. What do you see as some of the team's strengths and what are some of your hopes for the team this season?
I moved to Bellingen from Sydney in 2012 and started the Bellingen club in 2013. Initially we fielded a team in the B grade competition only. When the Hastings competition restarted
a few years later and a team that travelled from Port Macquarie withdrew from our A grade, we added an A grade team as well. This season, we’ve added a second B grade team, as our playing numbers have been growing strongly. We also have a terrific new sponsor – the North Coast Hotel Group (operators of the Hoey Moey and other venues) – and will soon be renaming our team the North Coast Brewers.
The unquestioned strength of our club isn’t any particular playing skill, but our culture and camaraderie. We are all there to enjoy playing and support each other, win or lose. Over more than 30 years coaching and playing baseball in Sydney and Coffs Harbour, fostering this culture has always been my top priority and I’m proud that we bring it to the field every Saturday.
Our A grade team hasn’t had a lot of success in the past, but we have added several top-notch players this season. I’m really excited about what this team could achieve. I’d say we’re one pitcher short of being a championship calibre club.
Who is the comp open to and how much experience do you need to have to get involved?
The comp is open to everyone regardless of experience, ability, age or gender.
The minimum age to play in the senior competition is 15, although players of sufficient skill and physical maturity who are 14 may receive clearance to play seniors also.
The junior competition has three levels: Tee ball (7-10), 14’s (10-14) and 16’s (14-16).
What would you say to anyone considering giving baseball a go this year?
I’m obviously biased, but I think baseball is a great sport to play. Over the years I’ve recruited many players, young and old, male and female, who have never played the sport before. The season is still young and there’s plenty of time to join. Our club in particular is always on the lookout for new players.

Concerns regarding bacterial contamination in raw pet food are common. Although raw meat can harbour pathogenic bacteria such as Salmonella and Escherichia Coli, the perceived risks o en overshadow the reality when appropriate handling protocols are followed.
The emphasis on raw food being uniquely hazardous neglects the fact that any pet food, whether raw or processed, can become contaminated. Both raw and processed pet foods are susceptible to bacterial contamination. Studies have documented instances of dry dog foods being implicated in Salmonella outbreaks within the human population, underscoring that kibble is not immune to these risks. In addition to bacterial contamination, kibble can also be affected by mould and storage mites. Mould can produce aflatoxins which are highly toxic and can lead to liver damage and other serious health problems in pets, while mites can cause allergic reactions and skin issues. Maintaining rigorous hygiene standards is imperative regardless of the food type. Proper food handling practices include thorough hand washing before and after handling pet food, cleaning preparation surfaces and utensils meticulously, and ensuring that food is stored at appropriate temperatures to inhibit bacterial growth. Pet owners should avoid using the
same utensils and surfaces for pet food and human food without adequate cleaning, and feeding bowls should be washed in hot, soapy water after every meal to prevent the buildup of harmful bacteria. The misconception that raw pet food is inherently more dangerous than kibble fails to consider these factors. Vigilance in food safety practices is essential to mitigate the risks of bacterial contamination, mould, mites, and aflatoxins across all pet diets. By adhering to these principles, pet owners can ensure the health and safety of their pets while choosing the diet that best suits their needs. While raw pet food does require careful handling, the bacterial and other contamination risks are comparable to those associated with kibble. Education on safe food handling practices is the key to maintaining a healthy, contamination-free diet for pets, irrespective of the type of food chosen and bacteria risk should not be a decisive factor when choosing what to feed your pet. Can you tell us a bit about your background and what sparked your interest in food?
I grew up in Canada's prairies, where we had a beautiful garden in the summer and grew heaps of fresh vegetables. Some of my favourite memories from my childhood would be sitting on our back deck, shelling peas with my Mum, and canning vegetables for the winter. These experiences instilled in me a deep appreciation for fresh, homegrown produce and sparked my early interest in food. Additionally, travelling to Australia at 19 was a transformative experience that further ignited my passion for food. I was captivated by Australia's vibrant food culture, celebrating fresh and local ingredients, and I was instantly hooked.
What made you decide to pursue a career in hospitality? How did you go about getting into the industry?
Like many teenagers, my initial experience in hospitality began with after school jobs as a way to earn extra money. However, my passion for the industry truly ignited when I

married an incredibly talented Australian chef in my early twenties. His passion for food and hospitality was infectious, and it inspired me to explore this exciting field further.
At the time, I was studying fine arts, but the attraction of working in some of the most beautiful settings was irresistible. We had the opportunity to work in stunning locations, from the mountains of Canada to destinations like the Whitsundays, Noosa, Byron Bay, and Lord Howe Island. The flexibility and diversity of opportunities within the hospitality industry were particularly appealing to me, and with it being a fun and social environment it just made it a natural choice to pursue a fulfilling career.

Coffs Yachtie is a relaxed seafood restaurant and bar with panoramic jetty and ocean views! We chatted to Katie Lakiss, the Admin and Events Coordinator, to find out more…
Katie, what makes Coffs Yachtie a favourite with locals and visitors alike?
Being the heart of the Jetty comes with expectations of, and a responsibility to, our community. Obviously, the view is a major drawcard for us, so we’ve got great coffee, delicious meals, cold drinks and friendly service to complete the picture. If sitting with a drink in hand watching the ocean down to Split Solitary Island doesn’t float your boat, the dog and people watching along the Breakwall and North Wall Beach is sure to entertain you. Plus if you’ve got your furry friend or kids in tow there’s plenty of space for them all in the grassed Jetty Beach Bar, looking straight out to Coffs Harbour’s most iconic beach.
Tell us about the various function areas like the Jetty Beach Bar and the Breakwall Café and Restaurant.
We have a few options for all kinds of
functions and gatherings, from small private conferences to large presentations, birthday parties, engagements, baby showers and weddings!
There is something kind of refreshing about this humble space overlooking the relaxed busyness on Coffs Harbour’s most famous beach.
Downstairs we have a private conference room and our amazing Jetty Beach Bar. Jetty Beach Bar is truly a perfect spot for functions. It can be booked out exclusively, giving customers and their guests not only the entire grassed space by the sea, but the undercover area, conference room and private bar. The area can also be booked out for multiple smaller groups.
Upstairs is the Riptide Bar with it’s lovely view of Jetty Beach, perfect for an afternoon drink while the sun goes down. There is something kind of refreshing about this humble space overlooking the relaxed busyness on Coffs Harbour’s most famous beach. It’s hard to explain, but those who’ve ever sat on the
small, rather exclusive, deck there will agree. It’s just nice to be at Jetty Beach without being on Jetty Beach sometimes I guess.
Finally, we have the Breakwall Café and Restaurant, which is open for breakfast and lunch 7 days, and dinners on Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights. This is the place to eat with the always entertaining view over North Wall dog beach and the famed breakwall to Muttonbird Island walk, not to mention some of the best sunrises available for the early breakfast diners and coffee drinkers on the Coffs Coast! What makes the menu a stand out from other venues?
Our menu has all the classic pub menu meals, obviously with seafood accents. The Prawn Linguine and Poseidon Chicken are fan favourites, along with our Porterhouse Surf & Turf, ever-popular Thai Beef Salad, and of

A talented group of visual arts and ceramics students from TAFE NSW will be showcasing their creative works with an exhibition in Coffs Harbour entitled ‘All Mixed Up.’ We caught up with some of the super-talented, graduating students to chat through their exciting plans for the future.
Hello Olivia and students!
Firstly, congratulations on almost completing your Visual Art Diplomas, what an outstanding achievement! Tell us a little about each of your artistry, your majors and how you have found your course enriching for your talents and creativity?
As a Visual Arts student, we have covered a range of mediums over the last 18 months. From printmaking to sculpture, various painting styles and techniques, life drawing and mixed media - we have broadened our respective art practices; both discovering new ways of working and honing in on existing skills and interests. In the Ceramics Diploma, students have learnt hand building and throwing techniques, glazing and firing processes and how to apply these skills to both functional and sculptural objects.
I have personally found that my confidence has grown tenfold, both in my technical abilities and the ways in which they manifest creatively. Each of us have entirely different fields of interest, which we have cultivated and developed during the course. My areas of interest have become heavily about mark making and expression through various drawing modalities.
lino printing, and sculpture. In the ceramics department I have seen an array of coloured clays and glazes coming out of the kilns. There are organic shapes and accents found in many of the ceramic works, ranging in sizes. There are also more functional forms such as dinner sets and mugs, intricate vases, and furniture pieces. It is a real showcase of the versatility of clay, and how far your imagination can take it.
The annual graduating exhibition will be showcased in Coffs Harbour from June 15th to the 24th. What will be on offer for an audience and what do you hope people will take away from attending the event?

For most of my cohort, the Visual Arts Diploma is a stepping stone into further tertiary education, with many of us going on to university next year to study Visual Arts. Further down the track many of us see ourselves pursuing careers within the arts sector, teaching and with our respective art practices. We are eager to collaborate with other artists with other local projects, joining other exhibitions and supporting our growing visual arts community.

Mitch Gobel has been painting professionally for over a decade. His work is both beautiful and moving, a reflection of the world around him. Mitch recently moved to the Bellingen Shire with his small family and is in full swing working on two new bodies of work to share with us.
Hi Mitch. Please tell us a bit about your introduction to art and what some of your early experiences with art were that you feel really sparked your ongoing passion.
'Art can save you' is a phrase I've leaned on for over a decade. I was always quite creative as a child, and art was a big part of my journey growing up, but the pivotal moment for me was when I started experimenting with abstract resin art in my early twenties. Long story short, I was feeling lost at that stage in my life. I lacked a sense of purpose and direction. One day, I decided to check out a local art gallery. The work I viewed there blew me away, piquing my interest enough to give a similar art style a go myself. I still remember the first piece I ever created.
I used acrylic house paint. Bunnings had a huge colour range and the sample pots were, and still are, relatively cheap and the paint had the viscosity I was after - it was liquid, like honey and worked perfectly for what I had in mind, which was pouring different paints together onto a base which was flat on the ground. After mucking around for an hour or so, I was finished. The artwork looked TERRIBLE, and I made a massive mess on my Dad's dining table, but I completely fell in love with the sense of freedom, the unknown and the explosion of colour. At the same time, I was frustrated by the process; my mind raced

with ideas that I hoped would take me closer to where I wanted the art to go and in that process, I noticed that everything else that was going on in my life seemed to disappear.
That day, I discovered a positive place to direct my time and energy; for lack of a better term, I found an escape through artart can save you.
From then on, I poured all my energy (pun intended) into my practice. All my spare time and any money I had went into advancing
my work, and I became obsessed with it. It was all I thought about or wanted to be doing.
For about two years, I practised and advanced my work privately. Eventually, I created a handful of pieces I was confident in, and a local homewares store offered to advertise them. All the art I gave them sold in just two days. I was paid a few thousand dollars (more than I'd earned working full-time for a month). I quit my job as a horticulturist the next day, and I've been happily painting professionally for over a decade.

How would you describe your art style?
Contemporary-abstract: Most viewers consider the works to be similar to aerial photographs of various landscapes. Personally, I consider them loose visions or dreams, cloud-like atmospheres of vivid colour.
What are your favourite mediums to work with and why?
Spray paint has always been an integral part of my process. I love working with it, as you can blend colours well and quickly create strong foundations. That said, I primarily work with oil paint and dry pigments, often metallic pigments. Preferably, I use

these because of the element of depth they give the artwork. Depending on the angle from which the art is viewed, those metallic pigments will show themselves differently and provide a sense of transformation. They bring the art to life.
Can you share a bit about your process when working on a piece?
Firstly, I decide on a colour palette, then consider proportions and a rough layout. Initially, I use acrylic paint to create large foundations for the rest of the piece to
emerge. The painting is completed in several stages, with time needed between layers for the wet paint to set. As the piece progresses, I transition into oils for the fine details.
Generally, each piece takes 2-3 weeks to paint.
Once the painting is complete, it takes another month for the paint to cure fully. Finally, the artwork is sealed, protecting its physical integrity for many years to come. Where do you draw a lot of your inspiration from?
I've always felt most at peace when I'm in nature, and that sense of freedom is the feeling I try to portray with my work. When you stop to notice the complexity of nature,
it's wild, and it's chaotic and diverse, even in a small environment. For example, even something seemingly as simple as a flower garden can host a world of chaos and colour, life and death all happening at once. I draw on that idea for inspiration for most of my pieces.
Are there any pieces that really stand out to you as having a special meaning or association to them?
Before I met or knew my wife, we were both artists with incredibly similar practices. We painted a piece together a few weeks after we first started dating. 'My New World' (it's the artwork you'll see on the home page of my website). That artwork cemented the beautiful connection we were feeling for each other; it was a creation of pure love. Our audience received the piece well, and it's been my most popular artwork, with thousands of prints of that piece sold.
Do you ever exhibit your work or get involved in shows or events?
My goal for this year is to secure gallery representation. I've mostly self-marketed

and presented my work through Instagram, and I feel like that's taken me as far as I can go, on my own. At the moment, I'm working on two new bodies of work, and I'm developing a couple of different exhibition concepts, which I'm pretty excited about. I am looking for the right gallery to help me bring those works and exhibition concepts into reality. You have recently moved to the Bellingen Shire, can you tell us a bit about what drew you and your family to this place?
Yes, we've been visiting Bello for years. In
my opinion it's one of the most beautiful areas in the world and the diversity and purity of nature here has been a big draw for us. My wife's family lives in the area too and after moving from the Byron area, we've found that it's a better lifestyle for us - slower, quieter with a strong sense of community. We love Byron but it's very fastpaced, Bello suits our young family dynamic better.
Where can we view your work or get in touch?

Theresa Olsen, aka Reesy, started Muse Pole and Aerial when she herself felt there was a gap in the area for instructors and studios teaching these performance styles. Currently facilitating classes in Grafton, Coffs, Coramba & Woolgoolga, Muse is growing and gaining a dedicated following of those who are passionate about the freedom of expression and fitness that comes from pole dancing.
Hi Theresa (aka Reesy!).
Can you share a bit about how you first discovered pole dancing?
Hello! My original interest sparked 15 years ago, through talk with others on my travels. Eight years ago I finally committed to finding a place to start my journey. My only regret is not doing it sooner!
What was it that drew you in and made you want to pursue teaching as well?
Growing up I loved gymnastics, climbing and dancing.. pole and aerial is such a beautiful fusion of my interests. Over the years I've naturally gravitated towards teaching roles in my work as I love to help guide others towards achieving their goals and full potential. It's fulfilling to see the joy and transformation of students, not only technically but in many ways.
Can you tell us a bit about Muse Pole and Aerial and how you came to start your own studio?
After the unfortunate passing of Naomi Poland of Poland Fitness in Coffs, there was a gap in the availability of studios and instructors in the area, especially within higher levels. I was travelling to Sydney and the Gold Coast to learn as well as online, to keep progressing. A mix of passion and demand founded Muse.
How has the studio evolved over the years?
Muse has ebbed and flowed through temporary spaces; however, always keeping
the same vision of support, passion and unique creation within an empowering and inspiring community of people. It started in a humble garage, teaching private pole lessons, soon evolving into group lessons in Grafton, Coffs, Coramba and Woolgoolga.
The selection of classes has also evolved, adding in options for not only pole, but chair, burlesque, floorwork and acro and aerials.
We currently facilitate classes in Woolgoolga (at the inspiring Woolgoolga Performing Arts Studio) and also Coramba Hall. The selection of classes has also evolved, adding in options for not only pole, but chair, burlesque, floorwork and acro and aerials. Using these skills our Muse students and instructors have performed for various events such as a recent Jacaranda Festival fundraiser, music festivals and The Skate Ink
Rhyme Festival.
You now have a couple of instructors working with you at Muse, can you share a bit about them?
Chloe and Claire, are talented and caring instructors. I am so grateful to have them on the Muse team! Here are some words they shared with me upon starting with Muse.
Chloe “I love pole as it is endlessly challenging, empowering and an amazing strength building, creative outlet. I chose to be an instructor because I love to see people experience the same joy and confidence I feel from doing pole and I feel honoured to assist students on their pole journey.”
Continued over...
I also adore performing! Sharing all of the hard work and effort, but most of all storytelling and inviting people into a piece of my heart and soul!
Claire “I love how pole is both mentally and physically beneficial, a creative space where you can get away from everything and just be who you want to be! It doesn’t matter if you’re not strong or you have two left feet, pole is for everyone!”
You also teach some aerial performance styles, could you share a bit about them?
Yes! Facilitated in Woolgoolga, Muse is offering aerial fusion classes that focus on Aerial Hoop (Lyra) and Aerial Hammock (Sling). Students learn body awareness, control and confidence whilst strengthening, stretching and toning, suspended from the ceiling! Our classes are all about movement mentorship using safe progressive techniques, so you do not need previous skills or prerequisites to start.
What are some common misconceptions or ideas about pole dancing?
The stigma.. all pole dancers are strippers or wanting to be one. Pole dance in Australia did originate from strippers; and for that all people who are entertained by any form of pole artist, should be grateful. Unfortunately our society isn't quite there yet so we create safe spaces and culture for students to practice with privacy and open-minded
people; only sharing their skills if they wish to do so.
Our skin is our safety net so we need it to be accessible for gripping the apparatus. People often misinterpret this as all polers making a fashion choice, however in my experience many pole students are body conscious. As for those that do choose it as a fashion statement.. all power to them! Be proud of your body and what it does for you! No judgement here.
Pole has evolved to incorporate many forms.. with the influence and inspiration from gymnasts, circus artists, and dancers of genres such as contemporary and lyrical.
Pole has evolved to incorporate many forms.. with the influence and inspiration from gymnasts, circus artists, and dancers of genres such as contemporary and lyrical. It’s an underestimated and unappreciated artform. What is your favourite thing about pole and aerial?
All my life I struggled with self confidence, trust and ways to express my feelings. My journey with pole and aerials has nurtured growth in all of these aspects of my life. It's
therapeutic, motivating and freeing on more levels than I can describe. I discovered a part of myself I didn't know existed and now have the privilege of assisting others through their version of a similar journey.
I also adore performing! Sharing all of the hard work and effort, but most of all storytelling and inviting people into a piece of my heart and soul! Recently I performed with The Infamous Cabaret Circus - that was unreal, also as Lyra Choregrapher and Performer for Naidu Theatre Company's production of Cats The Musical - so much fun!

HSaturday 8th June will mark 7 years since Co s Harbour Parkrun started. We spoke to David Goodwin, the Event Director, to find out what Parkrun is all about, what/who keeps it going, and how it benefits the community.
i David, can you tell us about Parkrun and how it got started here in Coffs Harbour?
Parkrun is a FREE weekly 5km timed walking/running event that takes place every Saturday morning. Everyone is welcome, with the event starting at 7am from Park Beach Reserve. The course takes locals and visitors through the park, over Coffs Creek, along the path to the northern break wall around the Coffs Harbour Marina.
Over the past 7 years, more than 33,000 participants have completed the 5km course. Some participants will be finished in under 20 minutes whilst others take an hour to complete the course.
Parkun started in the UK in 2004. As its popularity rose, it became obvious that it needed to create more events in the UK and ultimately throughout the world. In Australia, there are just under 500 locations that host a Parkrun event every Saturday morning. No
matter where you are, there is an event not too far away. Coffs Harbour Parkrun held its first event on a wet, Saturday morning in June 2017 with just over 80 participants completing the course. Over this time, participants numbers have doubled with up to 200 people completing the course on any given Saturday morning. To date, Coffs Harbour has hosted just under 300 events (COVID paused the event for an extended period).

We are an inclusive event – you’re always welcome at Parkrun. Only a few weeks ago, we had Daniel Willams (National under 18 and under 20 1500m champion) complete the course alongside Lindsay, a wonderful man in his 80’s, who has completed well over 100 events and volunteered countless times.
Parkrun is not a race. Parkrun is for everyone, it is about having a go and having some fun. There really is no better way to start your weekend than a walk or run on our beautiful course. Everyone who attends has a story, a
reason for coming to Parkrun. We don’t ask why; we just hope they enjoy themselves.
Parkrun is managed by volunteer members of the community, what sort of roles do volunteers provide to keep Parkrun going?
Upon our return a er COVID, many participants commented how much they missed the weekly event. Sure, they could still exercise during COVID, but Parkrun was something di erent.
Although it is an international entity, Coffs Harbour Parkrun is run by volunteers.
Volunteers ensure that we have an event each week. Just like our participants, everyone is welcome to volunteer. There is a job for everyone!
In the early days, a group of volunteers worked tirelessly with all 3 levels of government to ensure that we had a course that was safe for everyone. There are no roads to cross, almost the whole course is paved, and it showcases some of the best parts of the Coffs Coast. The ethos behind Parkrun is that it is free for all to participate. Without volunteers we would not have Parkrun. Each week a group of about 10 volunteers fulfil roles such as marshalling, time keeping and recording results.
We are extremely lucky to have some great people who volunteer on a regular basis. You cannot go past Graham and Lyndall, who between them have volunteered at well over 200 Coffs Harbour events – always smiling and always ready to help.
What have been some of the benefits you’ve experienced or heard about from being part of Parkrun?
As part of its growth, Parkrun continues to undertake research into why people are so invested in Parkrun – as participants but also as volunteers. One of the more interesting results to come from the studies is the significant mental health benefits that Parkrun can offer.
upwards to 50 participants who are visiting the area complete our course. There are Parkrun tourists – those that visit areas just to do Parkrun!
Where can we find out more or get in touch?
If you are looking for a great way to start this weekend, head down to Park Beach Reserve at 7am on Saturday morning – you’re always welcome. Further details about Coffs Harbour Parkrun can be found at parkrun.com.au/ coffsharbour/ and our Facebook page. Thanks David
We know that exercise is good for mental health, but Parkrun provides more than exercise. It is a supportive, safe environment. It is not a race, although some will use their previous weeks’ time as motivation to improve.
our return following COVID, many participants
Parkrun had to stop during COVID due to restrictions around group gatherings. Upon our return following COVID, many participants commented how much they missed the weekly event. Sure, they could still exercise during COVID, but Parkrun was something different. As much as Parkrun is for the local community, it also provides for the visitors to the area. What better way to showcase some of our wonderful scenery than a walk or run as the sun is coming up.
Parkrun welcomes everyone in the region. It’s a chance for locals and visitors to get together. During the holiday season, we may have
We have all had those times when we feel unmotivated. Doing everything except what we either need or must achieve, delaying an important task.
The habit of delaying important tasks to focus on less urgent, more enjoyable, and easier tasks differs from laziness, which is an in-action, we have an unwillingness to act. Procrastination is the act of unnecessarily and voluntarily delaying an important task that may have negative consequences for our potential. Putting off tasks we do not enjoy is common, despite the negative consequences that may follow. Procrastinators know that the behaviours impact them and their daily lives. So why do we do what we do?
As humans, we have a multitude of needs, including physiological, psychological, social, and quasi-needs. Our physiological needs are essential for physical survival, such as air, food, drink, shelter, clothing, and sleep. Our psychological needs are our desire to seek out interactions and connect with others. The quasi-needs are the immediate needs such as if it is raining, we need an umbrella or the need to find our car keys as we have an appointment, or the deadline of a task. They are situational events promoting a psychological sense of pressure, tension, and urgency.
When we procrastinate our drive to delay is stronger than our drive to act. This can be for multiple reasons such as the physiological reason of feeling tired which will impact starting the task. The fear of failure will interfere with performance and persistence and prompts people to adopt performanceavoidance behaviours. We may be trying to avoid making a mistake, being criticised, performing poorly, and embarrassing ourselves. We then may find ourselves using maladaptive coping strategies, such as procrastination, which may impact health and wellbeing. The more we avoid tasks may have an impact on our self-esteem, personal control, life satisfaction, and psychological wellbeing.
Consideration of physical health and mental health presentations is important, as they may be the underlying reasons for procrastination. Once we understand why we procrastinate, we can look at ways to assist and identify needs and strategies to replace maladaptive coping behaviours.
Here are a few strategies that may be helpful to assist you on your journey. Pinpoint how you procrastinate, where this takes place and times in your day when procrastination happens. Set specific, realistic goals with timelines. Be realistic with the goal, rather than going too hard too early. Create an action plan and get creative with it, draw, paint, or write up your plan. Make it fun, this may help you with the buy-in as it is personal to you. You may need to break your plans into smaller manageable
steps. Chunk the tasks and commit to small first steps, use a timer if needed, 2-3 minutes is a good start. Make your working environment an inviting place to be and remove potential procrastinating distractions. Before starting, provide yourself with a grounding experience that creates the space or ritual of you starting the task. Give yourself permission to make mistakes, accept that your work may not be perfect and that is okay. If you find yourself getting distracted and feeling the impulse to procrastinate, delay that feeling or thought by counting down from ten, have a stretch, ground yourself, and ask yourself if you had a friend in this position what advice would you give them. Ensure you reflect on your progress, refine your approach, and ask yourself are these strategies working for you, whether they are effective, and do you need to modify or change them. Your plan will evolve and change to suit your needs as you progress and achieve success. Remember along the way you may hit a speed bump and the wheels may fall off; all is not lost. Start again tomorrow, each time will get easier, and you will see and feel the results of achieving your goals and living your best life. Until next time, be kind and gentle with yourself.

Pride Month is June and we have a great free event for you! We are inviting all parents, allies and friends to join us! Make sure you put aside Friday 28th June 2024, 6-8 pm at Breakfree Aanuka Resort in your diary now.
June is traditionally Pride Month and it commemorates the ongoing pursuit of equal justice for the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer community and it also celebrates the accomplishments of LGBTIQA+ individuals.
The event that catalysed the gay rights movement occurred on June 28, 1969, at the Stonewall Inn in New York City.
Police raided the establishment, which was a popular gathering place for the queer community. They arrested employees and patrons of the bar while pedestrians watched. Riots ensued in response, lasting about five days. This important history has now been recognised in June and is now known as Pride Month.
We are inviting you all to come along for a great information sharing evening which
includes our MC Sam Stanford who is a Youth Worker/Team Leader from Blue Sky Community Services. Also appearing is a very special guest speaker, Tegan McVey, who is the Training and Administration Coordinator at Lifeline North Coast. She is very knowledgeable through lived experiences and professionally presents great information in our local community. We also have a special guest Dr. Nicola Holmes on the night who is passionate about helping young people in our community. You will definitely go away wiser and up to date on the latest information and in the famous words of Nelson Mandela - “Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world.”
There will also be a panel of young queer people who will answer those questions that people would like to ask. The format is fun, informative and supportive and a safe space to discuss how we can best support our loved ones, which is the whole purpose of PFLAG+.
Included is a fully catered and delicious grazing table and soft drink beverages and of course, great company!
I must say a special thank you to our sponsors
Breakfree Aanuka Beach Resort and Blue Sky Community Services.
They also host BYP (Be Young and Proud) with Chontelle Mallie that operates out of Groundworks the first and third Tuesday of each month and Coffs Coast Focus for always providing each month this page for us. Without their support It would not be possible to put on this great event that is paid for by these generous businesses, hence making it FREE for you all.

Anyone that has ever sat in a waiting room or Emergency department knows it is often the last thing you want to do when you are feeling unwell. It is with this in mind and also a desire to reach those living remotely that Coffs Coast local Dr Jeremy Allen decided to launch telehealth website Dial The Doc in 2023.
“Following on from COVID, many health professionals realised the potential new technology had to bridge the gaps in health services, especially for those living remotely or unable to attend a clinic due to illness or work,” Dr Allen said.
“I was already doing telehealth appointments, but it was difficult until electronic technology became
available to send pathology, imaging and prescriptions, now it can all be done at the touch of a button.”
In addition to continuing daily appointments at the Coffs Harbour practice, Dr Allen has begun treating patients in towns such as Dubbo, Tamworth and as far afield as Western Australia.
“Local Coffs Harbour and Bellingen patients have also been crucial to the success of the website. As any new business operator knows, we are only able to continue because of the wonderful people that access our services,” Dr Allen said.
Welcome to our new “Thriving Not Just Surviving” series! A collaboration between Lifeline North Coast and Focus Mag, dedicated to enhancing mental well-being through practical, everyday actions.
To get us started, we’re sharing how physical activity can positively impact mental health.
Our bodies and minds are not separate, so it’s not surprising that your mental health can affect your body. Research shows that when people experience mental ill health, they are more likely to also experience a preventable physical health condition. Conversely, physical health problems significantly increase our risk of developing mental health problems.
The Mind-Body Connection…
The link between physical activity and mental health is profound and backed by science. Here’s how moving your body can help your mind.
Endorphin Boost: Exercise triggers the release of endorphins, the body’s natural mood lifters. These hormones create an immediate sense of well-being, often referred to as the “runner’s high.” This euphoric feeling isn’t just for runners; any form of physical activity can prompt this chemical response, enhancing your mood and providing a natural energy boost.
Stress Reduction: Physical activity lowers levels of stress hormones like cortisol. When
you exercise, your body learns to manage stress more effectively, leading to a calmer, more centred state. This reduction in cortisol also helps in alleviating symptoms of anxiety and can lead to a more relaxed state of mind throughout the day.
Better Sleep: Regular exercise can improve sleep patterns, leading to deeper, more restorative sleep. Quality sleep is crucial for mental health, as it allows your brain to repair and rejuvenate. Consistent physical activity helps regulate your internal clock, making it easier to fall asleep and stay asleep.
Enhanced Cognitive Function: Increased blood flow to the brain from exercise promotes the growth of new neurons and enhances cognitive functions like memory, learning, and problem-solving abilities. This means that regular physical activity can make you not only feel better but think better too.
Social Interaction: Many forms of physical activity involve socialising, which is essential for mental health. Whether it’s a team sport, a group fitness class, or a walk with a friend, these interactions foster a sense of community and support, which are critical for emotional well-being.
While traditional exercises like running or going to the gym are great, here are some creative ways to incorporate physical activity into your life.
Playouts: Swap “workouts” for “playouts.” Engage in fun activities like playing tag with kids, jumping on a trampoline, or having a frisbee game with friends. These playful activities get your heart rate up while bringing joy and laughter into your routine.
Dance Party: Turn up your favourite music and dance in your living room. Dancing is a joyful way to get moving and release stress. No need for formal dance steps - just move to the rhythm and enjoy the endorphin boost.
Micro-Workouts: Break your exercise into small chunks throughout the day. Do squats between meetings or tasks, lunges while the kettle boils, or push-ups before bed. (You can even join The Push-up Challenge!) These minisessions add up, making it easier to fit physical activity into a busy schedule.
City Hiking: Explore the Coffs Coast on foot. Get out there for a walk, discover new places, and appreciate your surroundings as you go. Combining exercise with exploration, makes
it a stimulating and adventurous way to stay active.
Laughter Yoga: Combine laughter exercises with yoga breathing techniques. This can reduce stress and improve mood, as laughing releases endorphins and reduces cortisol. Laughter yoga is a unique way to blend physical activity with emotional well-being.
Walk-and-Talk Meetings: Turn business meetings or catch-ups with friends into walk-and-talk sessions. Walking while talking boosts creativity and reduces stress, making conversations more engaging and productive.
Hobby Workouts: Combine exercise with hobbies. Go on photo walks if you love photography or enjoy the physical benefits of gardening. Engaging in activities you love makes it easier to stay committed to regular physical activity.
Did You Know...
Forest Bathing Boosts Mood: Spending time in forests can significantly reduce anxiety and depression. Known as “forest bathing” in Japan, this practice lowers stress hormone levels and enhances overall well-being.
Dancing Reduces Depression: Dancing can be as effective as aerobic exercise for reducing depression symptoms. A study found that participants in a dance program reported higher energy levels and improved mood.
Running Rivals Medication: Regular running can be as effective as antidepressant
medication for some people. Studies suggest that consistent aerobic exercise can produce comparable reductions in depression symptoms.
Nature Helps ADHD: Outdoor activities can reduce ADHD symptoms in children, improving attention and focus. Time spent in natural settings has been shown to enhance cognitive function and reduce hyperactivity.
Tai Chi Eases Anxiety: Practicing Tai Chi reduces anxiety and stress levels, combining gentle physical exercise with mindful breathing. This ancient martial art promotes relaxation and mental clarity.
Cycling Enhances Creativity: The rhythmic motion of cycling can clear the mind, leading to increased creative thinking. Many people find that their best ideas come while they’re biking.
Gut-Brain Connection: Physical activity improves gut health, which in turn influences mental health. Exercise promotes beneficial gut bacteria that produces mood-regulating neurotransmitters like serotonin.
Yoga for PTSD: Yoga can significantly reduce PTSD symptoms. Veterans participating in yoga programs report improvements in mental health and overall well-being.
Team Sports and Mental Health: Participating in team sports lowers depression risk by fostering social interaction and camaraderie. The sense of belonging in a team
setting is crucial for emotional support.
Music and Movement: Combining music with exercise, such as in Zumba, amplifies mental health benefits by increasing dopamine levels. The music enhances the enjoyment of physical activity.
Running Clubs: Joining a running club provides both physical and emotional support, reducing feelings of isolation. The shared experience of running fosters community and motivation.
Swimming for Stress Relief: Swimming reduces stress and improves mental clarity. The rhythmic strokes and water sensation are calming and meditative, providing a full-body workout with mental health benefits.
The connection between physical activity and mental health is clear and compelling. Regular movement can enhance mood, reduce stress, improve sleep, and boost overall mental wellbeing. Start small, find activities you enjoy, and engage with your community to make physical activity a joyful part of your life. It’s not just about surviving each day but thriving and living life to its fullest. Commit to moving for 30 days and see how it transforms your mental health.
Stay tuned for more tips and insights in our next article in the “Thriving Not Just Surviving” series. Together, we can create a healthier, happier community.

Briana Rooney started her unique business Wellbeing Support Dogs MNC after experiencing first hand the benefits of a positive relationship with a canine friend after an illness. She is currently offering support in the community with her beautiful dog Delilah, and the benefits are proving to be quite amazing!
Hi Briana. Could you tell us about how you got the idea for your business and why you decided to enter this field?
I had taken time away from work after illnesses and noticed the impact my pet dogs had on my mental and physical health during this tough time. I wanted to create a job that had meaning, purpose and most importantly, allowed me to make people happy! My vision was to have a trained dog who was accessible to our community, particularly for people who were unable to have a dog of their own, so that they could experience the same benefits that I had.
Can you tell us about how Delilah came into your life?
Delilah is from Kobelco Labradors, who are bred by Kelly Flemming in Repton. I knew if my idea of a business was to work, I needed an exceptional pup! Kelly has been breeding Labradors for over 30 years and has an extensive
program that the pups go through before they leave their mum to ensure they are well socialised, temperament tested and set up for success for the rest of their lives. I needed a dog who would seek out human company and feel rewarded by pats, cuddles and making relationships with people - and Delilah has exceeded my expectations!
What has the process been like training Delilah?
We trained through Therapy dogs Australia since Delilah was 8 weeks old and progressed through their puppy, junior and adolescent program before completing their adult qualification. We also trained locally through Evolve Dog Training’s puppy and adolescence classes. One of the most important parts of training Delilah has been socialising and desensitising her to a lot of different environments - so she has been everywhere with my family and I! This also helps to facilitate the human animal bond between myself and Delilah. The bond between us is the most crucial part of making sure our work is
done safely and ethically (for both Delilah and our clients). It is crucial for Delilah to trust me, and for me to trust her.
What sort of response does she usually get from your clients, and how do you ensure the introductions are positive?
She is one lucky dog, because my clients love her so much, and that feeling is definitely reciprocated by her!! Delilah often spots clients before I do and runs up to them with a waggy tail and a wiggly body! One of the most important parts of my job is looking for stress signals in Delilah. If she is getting stressed or not enjoying her work, then I need to be able to troubleshoot that and redirect the activities and alleviate her stress. It is important this is done in a way that keeps the human animal bond between Delilah and the client intact and was a big focus in our training.
How do you hope using a therapy dog impacts your clients in the long run?
I have already seen so many life changing benefits for my clients. Through the relationship
they build with Delilah they are open to a range of researched benefits including lowered blood pressure and heart rate, increased dopamine and oxytocin production, improved emotional regulation, decrease in anxiety and depression symptoms and improvement in self-confidence and positive emotions to name just a few! The extra special thing about all of this is that research has shown (and I see this too) that Delilah also receives these same benefits!
You’re pictured here with one of your clients, Breex Gibson, can you tell us a bit about how you and Delilah provide support for her?
Breex and Delilah have formed a wonderful bond since their connection at the beginning of 2024 which has formed an integral part to the success of Breex’s relocation to Coffs Harbour. Breex, who has special needs, enjoys the weekly stimulation and interaction with Delilah immensely. It has meant a lot of growth in her self-confidence and ability to be a part of the Coffs community. Breex was my first client to sign up to participate in the Coffs Running Festival with Delilah and her ‘Dream Team’, so we are enjoying working towards that goal together too!
Delilah often spots clients before I do and runs up to them with a waggy tail and a wiggly body! One of the most important parts of my job is looking for stress signals in Delilah.
build friendships on that day and continue those relationships because he was ‘Delilah’s favourite’!
Could you share some other experiences you’ve had with Delilah and clients so far? Are there any moments or interactions that stand out?
There are so many! I have a client with social anxiety who is now happy to go out into the community, a young person who was able to regulate and feel safe enough to cooperate through a terrifying dentist appointment, and a young person with ADHD who is now able to sit still and coregulate with Delilah through their psychology appointments.
Once, when visiting a primary school Delilah picked out a young person with additional needs to be her self-appointed best friend for the day! The other children who normally don’t interact with this individual were able to
While at a nursing home Delilah pulled over to a specific room and jumped up on the bed of a resident who had (unbeknown to me) just lost his wife. As he hugged her, he was able to cry for the first time.
I’ve seen children with learning difficulties go from hating reading to not being able to wait for their turn to read to Delilah again!
As mentioned above, in September we are taking a cohort of our clients to join us in ‘Delilah’s Dream Team’- allowing them to participate in their first ever fun run at the Coffs Harbour Running festival! We have got special approval to bring Delilah with us to provide much needed support to our clients and help them achieve this goal! I am just SO excited to see them all cross the finish line!
Do you have any goals or aspirations for your journey with Delilah moving forward?
Since starting Wellbeing Support Dogs MNC last year I had a goal of getting her into a school to regularly provide support for students. Amazingly we have started working at Toormina High School and are absolutely loving it!
I have also been working with some local primary schools to develop a reading program for kids in years K-2. We are currently looking for people or businesses in the community to help us fund these programs and help us make a difference to our local kids.
Where can we find out more or get in touch?
Please look us up on Facebook by searching ‘Wellbeing Support Dogs MNC’, or Instagram @ delilah_the_therapydog and follow us along on our journey! You can also email me at briana. rooney@live.com.
Like many retirees, John and Noeline were clever. ey educated themselves very well on all the di erent options out there around retirement living. is includes location, facilities and especially the finances. ey really took the time to explore and enable themselves to make an educated downsizing choice and armed with all this information they made their decision with clarity and ease.
It’s great to see this generation not accepting any preconceived ideas they may have inherited from their parents around retirement living. They’re empowering themselves with facts and knowledge on what this looks like modern day and especially at The Shoreline it looks outstanding.
What made you decide to make the move to retirement living at The Shoreline?
preferred application of Shoreline logo is with the tagline, with navy or white text.
logo with white text is generally on a navy background, such as a document footer.
the logo is used without the approval will need to be by contacting BNG Group Marketing.
up locations, facilities, finances and did a 10 year projection of those finances to help us decide what would work best for us. We had decided to go somewhere else but when the Shoreline was launched it was the model we wanted, and the decision was clear so we decided to wait; and we’re so glad we did.
What are the things you like best about the Shoreline?
Noeline: I’ve pushed myself out there and I’m doing a lot more activities than I’ve ever done. We all love our beautiful, heated pool and I enjoy water aerobics and yoga; mind you, I might look a bit funny sometimes, but I absolutely love it! Whatever makes you happy you can do or at least try to do because we’re all in the same boat.
We lived in a very big house and there was just too much work to do. We decided it was time to downsize and look forward in our lives, not backward. Our journey began 5 years ago when we started looking at some relatives that were older than us and observing how life was going for them. We went to the Retirement Expo and learned all about the different options and decided exactly what we wanted. We looked from the Hunter River to southern Queensland and went to work weighing
circumstances where the preferred not suitable a mono coloured alternate logo may be used in one of brand primary colours, outlined in document.
Security is one of the most important things when you’re older and The Shoreline offers this. We are all likeminded people here. All the people here, residents and staff alike, are always smiling. We are here to experience a good time and just be happy.
How has your life changed since coming to The Shoreline?
John: I do not have to maintain a large house. I do not have to worry about the yard or the garden. I don’t even have to put out the garbage!
If you’d like to know more about The Shoreline and it’s luxury retirement living options, you can call into the display suite which is opposite Ritchies IGA at Park Beach Plaza or call Julie Sechi on 0477 777 957, email julie@theshoreline.com.au or checkout our website www.theshoreline.com.au
Hey Nikki, tell us a bit about yourself and what is your connection to the Coffs Coast?
Absolutely! I'm Nikki Williams, my small business journey is deeply intertwined with my roots in the Coffs Coast. I grew up here, a 4th generation Coffs kid in a family of small business which exposed me to the many highs and lows of running a business and bringing up a family while working for yourself. I ventured off to explore other places during my twenties, to study and gain experience in my field. My first business was a franchise beauty salon in Noosa when I was 23, but the pull of home brought me back to Coffs when I had my children. It's where my family is, where I feel most grounded, and where I've built Enhance Aesthetics, a skin clinic I’ve poured blood, sweat, tears and my whole heart into, and which I’m incredibly proud of.
Take us back to the beginning… When and why did you start your business and how much has the business grown in the last decade?
A decade ago, I was a 30-year-old single mother struggling with the weight of responsibility, grieving the loss of my Dad, my biggest champion. Living under my mother's roof, I was lost, struggling to find my footing in a world that suddenly seemed so unfamiliar. But I've always been one to dream big and chase those dreams with determination. Despite the challenges, I knew I had to carve out a future for my daughters while being the best
Nikki Williams is a born and bred local business owner, wife and a mother of identical triplet girls. With a remarkable 22 years of experience in the beauty industry, Nikki Williams brings an extensive background in health science with a specialisation in the skin. As a seasoned corneotherapist, she’s a two-time clinic owner, having successfully managed her salon for an impressive 10 years.
mother I could be. I needed to reclaim my confidence and rediscover my identity. That's when The Salon by Nikki Williams came to life. Putting my name on that sign was a bold statement - a declaration of resilience, of stepping back into the world on my own terms. Driven by my passion for skincare and a burning desire to make a difference, I embarked on a journey to empower women and girls through beauty.
And though the journey is far from over, I'm proud of the impact we've had. Recently rebranding to Enhance Aesthetics wasn't just about a new name - it was about honouring my incredible team. These women, they're the heart and soul of this business. It was time for me to step aside, to watch them shine, to support them as they reach new heights of success.
Together, we've grown - not just in numbers or revenue, but in the bonds we've forged and the lives we've touched. And as we continue this journey, our commitment remains unwaveringto uplift, empower, and inspire, both within our team and beyond.
This journey has been anything but easy, but it's been worth every moment, and I'm grateful for every step of it, for every woman who's been a part of this adventure.
What have you learned in the last 10 years that you have brought to your role?
The past decade has been a journey of resilience, adaptability, and the unwavering commitment to authenticity. It's been a lesson
in staying true to our values, even in the face of challenges, and embracing continuous learning and innovation in an ever-changing landscape. I've come to understand the power of asking for help and the significance of surrounding myself with a trusted circle of people who have my back. But perhaps the most profound lesson I've learned is the art of leadership. Building a team rooted in genuine connection, empowering them to excel both professionally and personally, has been a game-changer for my business.
This journey has ignited a newfound passion within me to further refine and develop my skills as a leader. As we move forward, I'm excited to continue nurturing a team that not only thrives but inspires others to do the same.
Tell us the new and exciting products/ services that are happening in 2024?
In 2024, we're gearing up to unveil an array of cutting-edge products and services designed to elevate our clients' experience to new heights. Staying true to our core philosophy of corneotherapy, our focus will be on crafting personalised skin journeys tailored to individual needs and budgets.
But that's not all. We're also hard at work on an exciting new online platform, aimed at expanding our reach nationally. Our goal? To empower as many women as possible to achieve their healthiest, most radiant skin yet. Stay tuned for updates - the best is yet to come!
What are your business core values?
At Enhance Aesthetics, our core valuesintegrity, compassion, growth and learning, honesty, and relationships - are more than just words on paper. They're the guiding principles that shape every aspect of our professional lives. I'm proud to say that each member of my team embodies these values with heart and meaning, reciting them as if they were second nature.
We're dedicated to delivering exceptional care, building genuine connections, and earning the trust of our clients. In an industry often marred by shortcuts and gimmicks, we lead with integrity, ensuring that every interaction reflects our commitment to excellence and authenticity. Tell us about your strengths from a business and personal perspective.
From a business standpoint, our greatest asset is our unwavering dedication to education. We're driven by purpose, committed to excellence, and fueled by a relentless pursuit of innovation. We understand the importance of never becoming stagnant - we're always pushing forward, always seeking to improve.
Our partnership with Dermaviduals, as a platinum clinic, provides us with access to the highest quality skincare ingredients available today. As true pioneers in our field, Dermaviduals shares our commitment to pushing boundaries and setting new standards of excellence.
On a personal level, my greatest strength lies in my ability to lead with empathy. I believe in fostering a culture of trust and collaboration within our team, where every member feels valued and empowered to contribute their best. It's this sense of camaraderie and mutual respect that sets us apart and drives our success.
What advice do you have for other women working and living in such a fast-paced world?
My advice to fellow women navigating the dynamic world of business and life is simple - prioritise self-care and effective time management, and never lose sight of your original purpose for entering the business in the first place. In a culture that often celebrates being busy, it's crucial to carve out moments for yourself and those closest to you - for me, that's my family. Achieving balance hasn't always been easy, and I've spent the last two years
dedicated to improving in that area. Remember, strive for balance in every facet of life - it's the key to sustainable success and fulfillment.
What are your secrets to success?
Here are some key pieces of advice for fellow entrepreneurs:
1. Invest in a great business coach. Their guidance and expertise can be invaluable in navigating the complexities of entrepreneurship.
2. Trust and empower your team. Avoid micromanaging and instead focus on providing them with the necessary skills and resources to excel. A happy and empowered team leads to satisfied clients.
3. Allocate more time to work on your business rather than getting bogged down in day-to-day operations. This allows you to focus on longterm growth and strategic planning.
4. Create a power list. Start each day by identifying five essential tasks that need to be accomplished and prioritise them accordingly.
5. When it comes to hiring, take your time to find the right fit for your team. Conversely, don't hesitate to part ways with individuals whose attitudes or behaviours are detrimental to your company culture. Remember, one bad apple can spoil the bunch and jeopardise the success of your business.
How did you persevere through the tough times?
We’re experts at this! From navigating the challenges of COVID to dealing with floods and even sewage spewing from sinks on a Friday afternoon, but through it all, our team has proven to be experts at handling adversity.
In times of hardship, we've leaned on our resilience, our unity as a team, and our unwavering belief in our mission. Our purpose is deeply ingrained within us, serving as a driving force that propels us forward, no matter the obstacles in our path.
With a growth mindset, we approach challenges as opportunities for growth and learning. Instead of dwelling on setbacks, we ask ourselves, "What now?" and forge ahead with determination and resolve. It's this mindset that has allowed us to overcome every obstacle thrown our way and emerge stronger than ever. What do you want to achieve next?
As a business, our next objective is to extend our influence and make a difference, not only within our immediate community but on a broader scale as well. We're committed to pushing the envelope of skincare innovation through an online platform that prioritises integrity and education in the realm of online shopping.

What sets you apart from your competitors?
What distinguishes us from our competitors is our steadfast dedication to integrity and education. We're not just a skin clinic; we're educators on a mission to empower women to navigate through the noise and misinformation of a $4 trillion industry.
The beauty sector often preys on women's vulnerabilities for profit, but we're here to disrupt that narrative with honest advice and genuine education. We live and breathe our values. We show up as we are and encourage you to come as you are and embrace your authentic self.
Our name, Enhance, reflects our desire to see you enhance your natural beauty and embrace the skin you're in. But our commitment extends beyond skincare; it's about making a positive impact in our community and beyond. Over the years, we've proudly sponsored numerous initiatives and supported charities like the Pink Silks Trust, International Women's Day, and the Red Cross, because we believe in giving back and changing lives for the better.

Take us back to the beginning….. What is the history of the business?
It all started back in 1999, Chris and I moved up from Victoria and took over Tutti Frutti in Sawtell from his parents. We soon got interest from the local cafes and pubs about doing wholesale supply. We then decided to move into Coffs to accommodate our business growth. In the beginning we only serviced locally with one delivery vehicle, and 25 years later we now have over 5 refrigerated trucks servicing from Grafton to Port Macquarie.
When did your business open and who was involved?
In the middle of 1999 we started wholesaling. To begin with, it was just Chris, myself, and Jeff, our warehouse manager. Chris and Jeff would deliver, and I did a few days a week doing the accounts. Today we have 13 staff employed, and that includes Jeff who is still with us and is such an asset to our company. What have been some of the changes in your business?
In the beginning we only serviced locally with one delivery vehicle, and 25 years later we now have over 5 refrigerated trucks servicing from Gra on to Port Macquarie.
Probably our main change has been home deliveries. We made this change when
COVID arrived. We had to quickly work out what we were going to do to keep people employed and ourselves open. It was so well received that we have kept this service to the public available.
The range of produce we carry has changed. We increased our range of peeled products and extended that into slicing and dicing as well. I find our changes purely come from what our customers want. We are here to service our customers and if we can supply them with a better
product or service then that’s what we do.
How have you adapted as time / technology changes?
Over the years we have had to adapt to the way we do business and to engage with our customers, social media being the biggest with Facebook and Instagram. We have just launched our new updated website and have an online ordering system for our customers and the public to use, which makes it easier to place orders in their own time and have access to pricing and availability of produce.
If I had to think of why we are still here and operating, I would put it down to being a small family owned and operated business.
makes us feel like we are doing something right. We don’t take what we do for granted. We know we are very fortunate to be operating for all these years and we are grateful to all of our customers and suppliers for their constant support.
What is the secret to your success?
What have been some of your challenges and rewards?
We have had a few over the years, COVID being our biggest one. Like a lot of businesses, supply of produce can be challenging at times, and staffing, although there are a lot more people looking for work now. Our operating hours aren’t for everyone unfortunately as it is early starts.
Rewards are getting to chat to our lovely customers every day and constantly supplying them with the freshest produce. Some have been with us since the beginning, so that
I’m not sure we have a secret. We have always just made sure we are here and present in the business. I think it’s important for customers to speak with the owner at times if they need to. If I had to think of why we are still here and operating, I would put it down to being a small family owned and operated business. Our kids are very much involved in the business, whether it be either working here in the business, maintaining our trucks or working on the farm where we grow potatoes and various lines for the business, but also our staff. We have a small team, but they all do an amazing job, we couldn’t do what we do without any of them.
What is on the horizon for your business?
Something I have learnt is that you never know what is around the corner and we are always looking for ways to improve ourselves. Who knows, maybe the kids will take on the business and Chris and I can finally retire.
What advice do you have to other business owners on the Coffs Coast?
Well it depends on what industry you are in, but I would say be present, work in the business and you will always have control of where it is going.

In 2020, we evolved into a company, integrating modern technology to enhance our operational efficiency while maintaining the high-quality workmanship that our clients expect.
What challenges has the industry faced and how has the business evolved over the years? Do you think experience and years in the industry are important and why? Experience is crucial, enriching our knowledge and skills. While trends change, our foundational skills ensure consistent superior craftsmanship. At Wall to Wall Plastering, we ensure apprentices are well-trained in the art of

When did Watsons Leisure Centre open and who was involved?
The Watson family, namely Max, Faye, Kris, Adam and Jeremy, began their sales business in 1981.
What have been some of the changes in your business - how have you evolved ?
There have been many over the decades like becoming Jayco Dealers in 1990 then adding on a dedicated Service Centre in Hurley Drive. We then added the Camping World Spares Store. Expansion continued with taking on the Jayco Motorhome arm of the business, Take a Break Caravan Hire branch and a large renovation on the current space.
We have evolved by remaining customerfocused, ensuring that we prioritise a smooth process for customers so they can have their own adventures. The introduction of Customer Appreciation Weekends for customers has been a great way to stay in touch with experienced travellers on what’s
important to them in terms of product features.
Do you think experience and years in the trade are important?
Yes, we have the expertise in our workshop to better troubleshoot any problems with an RV as well as undertake more complex repairs and upgrades.
Customers can buy with confidence with us as we have been in business for over 40 years. How has Watsons weathered the decades and remained successful?
Being a successful business for over 40 years is a testament to resilience, adaptability, and a steadfast commitment to excellence. It’s a journey marked by countless challenges navigated with determination and innovation. Over four decades, our business has weathered economic downturns, industry shifts, and evolving consumer demands, yet we’ve remained steadfast in our pursuit of quality and customer satisfaction. Our longevity is not just a measure of time but of enduring relationships forged with clients,
suppliers, and employees. It’s a legacy built on integrity, hard work, and a relentless pursuit of improvement. As we celebrate this milestone, we look back with pride and gratitude, while also looking forward with optimism and a renewed dedication to continued success in the years to come.
What is on the horizon for Watsons Leisure Centre?
We are opening a Motorhome Showroom for customers to view our range of products with dedicated motorhome specialists to assist with any enquiries.

Our website says it all watsonsleisurecentre. com.au and we are at 6 North Boambee Road Coffs Harbour and invite everyone to come and browse and meet with our friendly experienced staff.
Hi Selena. Could you tell us a bit about your background and what made you decide to get into hairdressing?
I'm from the first inland city in Australia, a town called Goulburn, in southern NSW. I started my apprenticeship 30 years ago in a little salon called Quikk Snipp, which was a mother and daughter team.
Selena Brennan has been in the hairdressing industry for 30 years now, and she is still so obviously passionate about her field. Selena has just moved her salon ird Eye to a beautiful new shop front in Sawtell, teaming up with local beauty therapist Frankie and is expanding her talented hair team to boot!
Loretta and Janine Smith gave me the best start to my career. School wasn't really for me and once I was caught skipping school more often then not they decided to put me on full time, as I had been working Thursday nights and Saturday mornings for a year before this. Loretta and Janine took a wide eyed me to my first hair expo when I was 16 years old and that ignited a fire within me for the industry. It took many years for me to appreciate the start that they gave me and little did I know that it would
eventually be the backbone to where my work ethic, passion, drive and standard would all stem from. I can never thank them enough and I literally think of Loretta and Janine daily. Sadly Loretta passed away last year and the industry lost one of its greats.
The hairdressing industry is constantly evolving, what are some ways that you like to stay inspired and up to speed?
The industry evolves daily, I eat, sleep and breathe hair, and you kind of have to if you don't want to get left behind. My juniors, Jael an emerging stylist, Dani a school based apprentice and Roseanna our little tea and tidy, drive me all the time to better myself not only as a stylist but as a human being. It's so important to have the young ones around as they keep you on your toes and help you evolve with the new trends and language. I'm currently also on the lookout for our next apprentice, and it's really exciting for me that our team is growing a lot quicker than I anticipated. All of the girls here bring something unique to the table. What would you say are the most challenging and rewarding aspects of being a hairdresser?
The most rewarding thing is definitely seeing people leave my chair a lot happier than when they were walking in and making a difference to their life and the way they feel about themselves. After 30 years there's not a great deal I find challenging but if I had to
pick something it would be building the perfect team as I'm very picky these days about who I let into the space that Travis and I have created. You’ve recently moved your salon Third Eye to a brand new space, can you tell us a bit about it and what you’re loving about the new location?
I wanted to reward our clientele with something memorable for following me around the Mid North Coast for the last 18 years, I wanted a beautiful environment and more services to offer, so I invited Frankie Costanzo to lease a room for her beauty services so My Beauty Room and Third Eye 2452 operate under the one roof. Frankie has over 15 years experience in beauty and offers a wide range of services from waxing to facials/massage and Collagen induction therapy and we can't wait for everyone to be able to experience hair and beauty together.
What has the feedback been like from clients and the Sawtell community?
It's been really overwhelming, especially the attention my husband Travis has gained for us with the new renovation. His eye for design and detail is like no one I know and it was our best collaboration yet. Travis definitely led the way for me on this big project and always pushes to exceed any limits and always gets me over the try line just in time, he is my rock..my lifeline and most of all my sanity..
...it’s really exciting for me that our team is growing and a lot quicker than I anticipated. All of the girls here bring something unique to the table.
It was also a complete family affair, my Dad, brother, sister in law, other and father in law and some of their friends all pitched in to bring this brand new space to life. The love and care that went into to it all was second to none. My beautiful accountant and her husband called in one day to offer a hand, our lovely neighbours Bianca and Rick that own Bar Que Sera and Mortys Joint even brought us some wine and tasty treats to help get us through the last night before opening! We are just so lucky to live in the community that we do and for what they give back to us I am forever grateful.
What would you say is your overall ethos or goal with the experience you want to create for people with Third Eye?
To keep striving to be better, on the floor as a stylist, in life, in relationships, everything. I try to push myself hard and I try to get the girls to push themselves every single day. Jael has recently won a competition with CPR Hair Products and as a result will be flying to Sydney next week to represent us and assist the CPR creative team in their spring/summer campaign, I think that's pretty great and will only open more doors for Jael in the world of hair!
Do you have any other plans or aspirations
for Third Eye heading into the future?
At the moment my plan is to keep building a dynamite team and to keep producing quality work using quality products which we definitely get with CPR. They are a very innovative company and make sure we stay on top of everything hair and I always have a few extra tricks up my sleeve so watch this space!!.
Where can we follow your journey or get in touch?
You can call in to see us at 1/59 First Avenue Sawtell 2452, or you can call us on 5619 2493 or follow us on social media… facebook Third Eye 2452 or Instagram Thirdeyeat2452. We look forward to seeing you, we are here to make you happy.
Thanks Selena.

Could you tell us when you started with Faircloth & Reynolds and what your role is?
I started with Faircloth & Reynolds in September 1987 as a refrigeration mechanic.
In the early 90’s I moved into a sales role covering air conditioning, refrigeration and catering equipment sales. As the business grew and more staff were employed, I focused on the estimator role for mechanical services (air conditioning and ventilation) on larger
projects such as shopping centres, hospitals and commercial buildings.
What drew you to wanting to work at Faircloth & Reynolds?
for almost 37 years.
What is a typical work day like for you?
I moved up from Melbourne in 1986 and worked in Grafton, and it was during this time I met Peter Faircloth and David Reynolds and conducted some part time work. As Faircloth & Reynolds workload increased, I was offered full-time employment, which I gladly accepted. This decision turned out to be the correct one, as we all live in a great location and I have been happily employed by a great company

What have been some of the most challenging and rewarding aspects of your role?
At the time I started my employment, Faircloth & Reynolds had 9 employees and 3 service vehicles. Moving into 2024 sees the company with 250 employees and 170 vehicles. Faircloth & Reynolds are also highly active in the community, offering assistance to those in need, especially with recent disasters on both the Mid North Coast and North Coast. They also sponsor and participate in many sporting events and clubs and I have immense pride working with a company that supports each other and the community.
What are some of your current goals or aspirations in your career?
As my career moves into its twilight stage with retirement looming ever so close, my future goals will be to pass on my knowledge and experience to the people coming into the trade and assist those moving into estimating and management roles within Faircloth & Reynolds.
Where would you like to see yourself in a decade from now?

Rullis and Family Funerals are your local funeral directors who take care of everything, so you can focus on being with your family and loved ones.
Tell us about your funeral home and your staff?
AMyself and my late wife Miriam started in the industry in the late 1980’s in Sydney and then moved our family to Coffs Harbour in 1994 and started Victor Rullis Funerals. We bring a wealth of life experience and extensive knowledge of the funeral industry. Miriam’s mantra that she always said, and it still resounds with us every day, is to simply focus on doing a good job and to always do right by people. We are an experienced team who endeavour to go above and beyond for every family. We are a variety of age groups which brings different perceptions, skills and knowledge that enable us to connect with the community. We all have compassion, love and care for people.
The feedback we receive often is that we are friendly, approachable and nothing was a problem.
What services do you offer?
People are so unique and it couldn’t be more apparent when it comes to planning a funeral service. We work with our families to ensure they get the right style of farewell they want for their loved one. Our team have the capability to tailor our services whether it is small and intimate, or large and animated, or anywhere in-between. Majority of our services are held at the Coffs Harbour Crematorium Chapel located in Karangi however, when required we support families to engage alternate venues that suit their needs. We can make slideshows, create special keepsakes, source third party specialty items such as doves, butterflies, musicians and Harley hearses to name a few. We love helping families bring their unique ideas to fruition.
Our team provides education to university students going into the healthcare sector, and we also participate in community ‘talks’ to educate people about their choices and encourage pre-planning or vocalising their wishes with their family.
Being such a stressful time, how important is it to find the right people to step you through the processes?
From the first call we endeavour to find the right team member who would best fit that family and their needs. This includes finding a celebrant or minister who would be able to deliver the style of service they wish. We aim to provide a continuity of service, so that the family deal directly with the same person, from the first meeting to the funeral service and thereafter. Our team works together behind the scene for every family to make this difficult time the easiest it can be by taking on majority of the preparation. The process of engaging a funeral director
Our team works together behind the scenes for every family to make this difficult time the easiest it can be by taking on majority of the preparation.
involves a lot of trust, and we understand and appreciate this. Our goal is to always exceed expectations and be worthy of the community’s trust. During the first meeting with the family we listen and allow the family to express what they really want and need to honour their loved one in their way. Our team uses their knowledge to offer ideas and then takes the time to explain and outline the choices to consider for their loved one’s service. We are always honest and transparent regarding costs, timeframes and expectations so they can make informed decisions.
What is the most common question you are asked?
Most recently people have been expressing interest in our female team. Previously the industry has been seen to be mostly male, and they are surprised to see our female staff conducting the various facets of our job such as driving our hearses or attending homes to
bring loved ones into our care. We offer Lavender Rose Funerals which is a branch of our funeral home that allows you to solely have women to take care of you and your family. Sometimes a softer approach and attention to detail is what you need.
How do you handle the emotional toll that comes with working in the funeral industry?
We are still people too and do feel families emotions, however we always try to maintain composure as it’s our job to ensure that everything runs smoothly. As a team we do have what people would consider a dark sense of humour however this allows us as a team to debrief with each other to work through the challenging emotions we face. We actually love what we do as we genuinely feel we are helping people and we just try to stay positive.
Your industry can be considered morbid,
One time at a burial as the pallbearers, we were carrying the coffin over to the grave and the conditions were very wet. The ground was so muddy that our shoes got stuck in the mud but being the professionals that we are, we continued to carry the coffin over to the grave in our socks. It definitely lightened the mood, and that family thought it was hilarious.
Another time at a service in a church, one of our staff bent over to pick up the flowers and in front of everyone his pants completely ripped down the seam revealing his underwear. Lucky they were clean and it wasn’t wash day!
Their name has changed but the people and services have stayed the same! Formerly Willaid Healthcare Solutions, Country Care Group (CCG) Coffs Harbour provides a large range of innovative healthcare solutions nationwide. Providing products and services to aged care facilities, hospitals, healthcare centres, government contracts and NDIS participants, Australian and family owned, they are passionate about providing solutions that assist in people living their lives to their full potential.
QHi Lizzy, what makes you an expert in your field?
AEleven years as an Occupational Therapist has been a great basis for my role within Country Care Group (CCG) as a Clinical Educator and Solutions Specialist. With experience in both Australia and New Zealand, I have spanned various clinical roles in Occupational Rehab, Surgical Acute Care, Hospital Rehabilitation, Concussion Management, Aged Care, DVA and NDIS. I use education and training to support and advise not only our own CCG staff on our products and equipment but also stakeholders and the healthcare professionals who use us.
What skills/experience does your team have in order to service your clients?
We are extremely lucky to have a highly experienced team in Coffs Harbour. Although we have staff who have been in the business more than 20 years, it is the collective team as a whole that gives us such a wide knowledge base and skill set in our product and equipment knowledge. From our showroom team to our service and repair technicians we have an amazing team.
You have a huge range of products - what do you find are popular and most needed?
Yes we have a huge range, but every client is different and we seem to go through waves of various different products being popular. Currently it is our CPAP equipment, which is the machines and masks that assist with obstructive sleep apnea and sleep related breathing disorders. We provide hire and purchase of this equipment and it can really assist in someone’s quality of sleep at night time.
And lastly, what stands you apart from your competitors?
We care. We are very conscientious about assisting our clients as much as we can to find them the best solutions. Our priority is not that someone leaves the shop with a piece of equipment but that it is the right piece of equipment. This starts from the absolute basics around the training of our staff not just in Coffs Harbour but the company as a whole. We have developed an internal training program called CCG FIT which gives extensive training and resources to our staff. It is incredibly important that when clients come into the showroom that they feel confident and happy that our staff know how to assist them in selecting appropriate equipment solutions.
Meet Oliver
Quinell,
a lawyer working at Coffs Law Co in family law property matters. He’s been doing this since 2018 and is passionate about assisting clients achieve their property settlement goals.
QWhat was the reason for you making the move to Coffs Law Co?
AI was drawn to work at Coffs Law Co because they have a reputation for giving straight shooting, effective, reality based, legal advice. Since joining the team I work tirelessly to resolve our clients legal issues favourably and efficiently. We are providing a holistic approach to legal services for our clients to be able to get on living their best life, no matter what stage of life they are in.
What is your area of expertise?
Property matters in family law are my passion. I thoroughly relish the property aspects of family law, finding it a dynamic and interesting area to practice in. I am always extending my knowledge to serve our clients with information and advice that is current and well considered. I appreciate working collaboratively
with other professionals, such as accountants and financial planners, to facilitate our clients achieving their property settlement goals. Can you explain the process and what are the most common and challenging delays that arise?
For property matters the Family Law Act requires parties to achieve a fair, just and equitable resolution, either between themselves, or if agreement cannot be reached, the Federal Circuit and Family Court of Australia can make that decision for them! Generally, the delays are when one party will not tell the other party about their financial position, this is called “disclosure”. It is a requirement under the law for each party to provide the other information and documentation of their financial position. This is an ongoing duty. When someone chooses not to tell the other, either because they think they don’t have to, or for more nefarious reasons, this delays resolving property matters. To avoid delays, we recommend all unrepresented parties get legal advice so they
understand what they “have” to do. How important is it to find the right lawyer when it comes to property matters?
Apart from knowledge and experience in their practice area, lawyers should have the ability to build a professional relationship with you. To do this, we listen first, we want to hear your story. We can help you achieve your goals when we understand your life. From what you tell us, we can then explain the law to you, how it may affect you and provide options to you moving forward. By developing your understanding of the law, and how it applies to your circumstances, we want to empower you to make informed decisions to build a better life after the crisis of your separation. We work collaboratively with the financial professionals in your life to achieve financial outcomes that promote your best life moving forward.

QHi guys, please tell us, what is Pilates?
AIt’s a method of exercise and body conditioning developed in the early 20th century by Joseph Pilates originally as a form of rehabilitation to help returning soldiers who had been injured in war. The practice has developed since its conception and while you can find studios offering the more traditional styles, you can also find large group fitness style classes which also combine cardio and strength elements within the Pilates method to achieve some incredible results.
Tell us about the benefits..
I don’t think we have enough time to talk about all of the benefits!! In the 10+ years I’ve been teaching, I’ve heard everything from lower backs not being sore anymore to better quality sleep and being able to stand
up off the floor unassisted. From falling in love exercises to enjoying seeing changes in their own appearance and to holding a plank for 60 seconds!
It seems to be a perfect mix of functional health benefits, kicking fitness goals and feeling and seeing the difference within themselves.
As a beginner, do you need to be fit?
Oh absolutely not! At Thrive we offer ‘open’ style classes, where all levels are catered for, looked after and challenged in all classes and our instructors simply offer different resistance choices!
You are guided through your classes and never have to remember what spring level you were at last time or even how you were positioned on the reformer or mat! We often joke that you get to come in, lay down for 45 minutes and the instructors will boss you around!! Our instructors have a passion for helping people fall in love with moving their bodies so wherever you are on your fitness journey, they will be in the studio to support you.
What advice do you have for someone looking to get into pilates?
Don’t be intimidated - you are completely supported and guided throughout all classes! We will look after you in every single class, every single time! And don’t forget, everyone - instructors included - were beginners at one point and everyone at Thrive is very welcoming. We often see our regular members helping our newest members out in class, introducing themselves, commiserating on how sweaty the class was and even helping them set up their reformers!

Whether you are looking to upgrade to a bigger house, downsizing, or moving to a new location, knowing whether to sell your existing home or buy your new home first, can be an overwhelming thought process for many.
Bridging finance may be an option to consider exploring. For those who have found their next property but have not yet secured a sale of their existing property, bridging finance can allow a new property to be purchased before their existing property sells. And for those who may be hesitant to list their property on the market, without knowing where their next home will be, bridging finance can allow a new property to be purchased before committing to listing their existing property on the market.
Advantages of bridging loans
appealing if you have already found your ideal family home before selling or for those who want to avoid the hassle of temporary accommodations and multiple moves in the circumstance of selling before you buy.
• More time for property search: Bridging loans can provide freedom and time to explore the market at your own pace, allowing you to find the right property for your needs without the pressure of needing to rush the sale of your existing property once the right property becomes available.
Planning ahead and stress testing your options is always recommended before commi ing to a bridging loan...
Areas to consider before committing to a bridging loan
• Speed & Convenience: The main advantage of a bridging loan is that it enables you to move into your new home without selling your current property first. This can be especially
• How bridging works: Bridging finance works in a way where the lender takes both your existing property and new property as security for your loan – where the lender will often be funding the full purchase price + all costs associated with the new purchase (stamp duty, solicitors fees, etc) + any existing debt held against your existing home. Allowing customers to utilise the equity and projected sale profits from their existing home before selling.
• Interest Accrual: This results in a temporary period where the lender has funded a much larger total loan than the amount you expect to
owe after your property sells. Until the existing home is sold interest will accrue on the total (larger) loan amount. The longer it takes to sell your property, the more interest that will be accrued, ultimately coming out of your sale profits, and can result in a higher end debt amount than you originally expected.
• Set time frame to sell: most lenders will allow a sale period of up to 12 months from the day the new property is purchased. This timeframe may seem like plenty of time to begin with, though time often flies by – which can lead to added pressure to sell for a lower price than was originally anticipated. Planning ahead and stress testing your options is always recommended before committing to a bridging loan – i.e. how low can you sell for and how selling for a lower price, but quicker sale, can be beneficial and worth considering when factoring in the interest accrual on the bridging loan while holding off for higher offers.
• Different Lender options: not all lenders offer bridging finance and those who do offer bridging options all have their own unique lending criteria and niches.
Bridging finance is not for everyone and does not fit all situations, though can offer a unique option for those looking to buy and sell. If you are weighing up bridging finance to get into your next home, work with a lending specialist to discuss your situation and explore your options to help arrive at an informed decision.
The integration of dogs into classrooms has proven to be a transformative experience at Bishop Druitt College. It has offered a myriad of benefits that extend beyond the conventional boundaries of education, as evidenced by numerous studies and our own experiences with our wellbeing dog named Barkley.
Creating a Positive Learning Environment:
One of the primary advantages of having a dog in the classroom is the creation of a positive and conducive learning environment. Students exposed to canine companions exhibit improved academic performance, better social skills, and heightened selfesteem. The presence of a therapy dog has been associated with enhanced student engagement and behaviour, fostering a sense of camaraderie and trust among classmates.
Addressing Concerns and Ensuring Safety:
To address concerns about potential hazards or allergies, it is crucial for schools to establish clear procedures and guidelines. Dogs Connect plays a vital role in providing information, training, and integration support to ensure a safe and respectful environment for all students, including those with allergies or fear. The BDC Wellbeing Dog, Barkley,
is an Australian Cobberdog and as a result has an ideal amount of energy to serve as a Wellbeing Dog. He is also very intelligent and hypoallergenic.
Enhanced Social Interaction:
The introduction of dogs into classrooms significantly increases social interaction among students. Dogs serve as emotional outlets, allowing children to express themselves more openly and improve their ability to self-regulate emotions. The resulting increase in empathy towards animals and peers can contribute to a more compassionate and inclusive school culture.
Advantages of Caring for Dogs:
The responsibility of caring for a dog in the classroom offers unique benefits, including improved self-esteem, emotional regulation, and acknowledgment of individual abilities. Despite initial concerns, the advantages of forming an emotional bond between students and their canine companions far outweigh potential disruptions.
Improved Attention and Focus:
Studies consistently demonstrate that the presence of dogs in the classroom positively impacts students’ focus, attention, and overall engagement. Reduced disruptive behaviours, increased task engagement, and heightened motivation levels contribute to a more
effective learning experience.
Creating a Calming Environment:
Dogs can play a pivotal role in creating a calming and relaxing atmosphere within the classroom or in wellbeing hubs. Despite potential drawbacks, the emotional support provided by dogs helps reduce stress and anxiety levels among students. The unconditional acceptance offered by dogs fosters positive social interactions, teaching respect towards animals and encouraging emotional maturity.
As schools increasingly recognise the multifaceted benefits of integrating wellbeing dogs into the educational experience, we may witness a paradigm shift where animalassisted interventions become standard elements in schools worldwide. The time has come to embrace the potential of dogs as catalysts for positive change within the educational system, promoting not just academic excellence but also the holistic development of students.

After an established career treating patients with physical movement difficulties due to illness, injury, disability or ageing in hospitals and aged care facilities, Maria decided to take on a new challenge and enrolled in a Master of Sports Physiotherapy.
She graduated just as the world’s top athletes prepared to descend upon Sydney for the Olympic Games – an event that would change the city, and Maria, forever.
In 2000, Maria volunteered for the Host Nation’s medical team, which opened her eyes to the inequitable access to medical and physiotherapy services among competing countries.
Internationally esteemed physiotherapist, Professor Maria Constantinou, may be used to rubbing shoulders with – and of – sporting stars like Serena Williams and Olympic greats, but she will now be flexing muscles as the head of the new physiotherapy program at Southern Cross University in Co s Harbour.
It is really important that you listen to athletes, hear what they want and what they need, as they know their body be er than anybody else.
“The athletes might have the same physical skills but, because they haven’t had the same support, they may not perform at their peak and often battle long-standing injuries,” she says. “There were teams with no physiotherapists in their country.
“The athletes were so grateful. The rewards you get may not be tangible, but they are immense. They will be with you for the rest of your life.”
Her enthusiasm for sports physiotherapy now well and truly ignited, Maria went on to work with host nation medical teams during Olympic and Commonwealth Games in Sydney, Athens, Melbourne, Vancouver and the Gold Coast. She trained professionals in many small developing nations and once
served as personal physiotherapist to tennis titan, Serena Williams.
“It is so valuable to see the passion, determination and focus that an elite athlete has to achieve their goal. That’s Serena,” she says.
“It is really important that you listen to athletes, hear what they want and what they need, as they know their body better than anybody else.
“You cannot make too many changes at the last minute. Although we are physiotherapists, not psychologists, we still need to be mindful that you don’t want to negatively impact the psychology of the athlete or affect their

confidence.”
Maria was elected to the Board of the International Federation of Sports Physiotherapy in 2011 and has since been developing training pathways for sports physiotherapists internationally, including rolling out physiotherapy training programs in small Pacific nations.
She is now using that wealth of knowledge and experience to train the next generation of healthcare professionals as Professor of Physiotherapy at Southern Cross University.
The new Bachelor of Physiotherapy* will be the first degree of its kind to be delivered in northern New South Wales. Maria says the course will help address one of the region’s most pressing skills shortages.
“Being able to design a course and to work with local communities to develop health professionals who will service that community is a legacy that I would love to be part of,” says Maria.
“In my career, it has been important to look at how I can make a difference. It’s all about the power of education.”
Her mission at Southern Cross is to help students see the gift they can give to people in their own community and around the world
– the gift of remaining active and living their best lives.
“I tell students, it’s important to learn to give because quite often you will get more back,” she says.
“Wherever you go as a physiotherapist, you need empathy, an ability to communicate and a desire to help.”
The Bachelor of Physiotherapy* will be offered at Southern Cross University’s Coffs Harbour campus in 2025.
Chair of Human Sciences and Rehabilitation at Southern Cross University, Associate Professor Chris Stevens, says there is high demand for physiotherapists in the Coffs Harbour region.
“This degree will create an opportunity for those living in these regions to become a physiotherapist and help to meet this need in the community,” he says.
“The course develops graduates as physiotherapy practitioners who implement a person-centred, evidence-based approach in their practice, with a focus on care of patients and protection of the public.
“Cultural capability is an important component of the degree and the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health Curriculum Framework
will be incorporated, enabling graduates to work in diverse health care settings, with people of all ages, abilities and cultural backgrounds.
“This is an important new degree that complements our existing suite of rehabilitation courses in clinical exercise physiology, osteopathy and occupational therapy.”
The four-year full-time degree will give students an understanding of functional human anatomy, physiology, biomechanics, neuroscience, pain sciences, therapeutic exercise, psychology, pharmacology and will explore acute, chronic, acquired and developmental diseases and injury across the lifespan.
With professional placements totalling approximately 1,000 hours, students will graduate job-ready.
Southern Cross University is ranked number one in Australia for full-time employment in Health Services and Support (Good Universities Guide 2024).

CHaving been lucky enough to write this column for four years now, the team at Focus asked me to flip the script this time and let you all know a li le bit more about me.
an you tell us about your business? I run a digital marketing agency called The Digital Laneway.
I build websites to ensure your business gets found and looks good online. You’ll find us on the main road of the digital highway (the first page of Google) because SEO is our jam. But our reputation really shines when clients recommend us to others.
I’m best known for my search engine optimisation skills. Traditionally, a website's focus is on design elements, but my motto is always ‘design attracts, copy sells’. So with over 20 years experience working in marketing and sales, I’m all about ensuring your website becomes your hardest working employee 24/7. What’s your favourite part of the work you do? Being able to see the impact I have, because success to me is all about impact. The impact on my clients and, in turn, their customers. Visibly seeing the improvement in their Google rankings, website visits and sales is fulfilling.
I aim to be someone who makes a difference. Having an impact on other women in business is something I deeply care about. I make time
to have coffee with fellow business owners and cheer them on. Because helping other businesses rise lifts us all.
Who is your greatest influence in business? I’m surrounded by great business owners as part of the Coffs Coast BWN committee, the Chamber of Commerce Board, and with this column. This gives me the chance to see the breadth of wonderful talent here.
But two people stand out as being the most influential.
The first was Eric, the mailroom officer at my first job. He made everyone feel important. He instilled in me that every business interaction is always about one human connecting with another, because all customers are people and all employees are people. So if you don’t understand people, you don’t understand business.
He also happened to be my Dad. Losing him when I was only 20 shaped a lot of the person I am today.
The other was a boss called Elise back in my corporate career. She gave me the greatest gift someone can give another - she unequivocally believed in me. The world lost her too soon to pancreatic cancer, but so much of me is made from what I learned from her.
Have you always lived on the Coffs Coast? My husband grew up in Sawtell and went to school here, but we met when we lived in Sydney. For almost two decades we’d been coming to the area to visit family and holiday here, and when our kids were little we decided to make the leap and moved here permanently in 2017.
I can’t think of anywhere else being home now. We love the lifestyle here, our kids are happy, and I’m so grateful to be part of a great local community.
What piece of advice would you give women making their way in the business world? Find your voice and use it. Seek out mentors. Ask for help. Surround yourself with people who cheer for you. Be true to yourself and your values, knowing not everyone may like that. And that’s ok. Keep your sense of humour, it’s one of the most underrated business skills out there. You can do serious things without taking yourself too seriously. Where can people find out more about your business?

Crime touches every corner of our society, affecting families, neighbourhoods, and individuals alike. Recently, a close friend of mine experienced a home invasion, a violation that left them shaken and distraught. This personal encounter, unfortunately, reflects a growing trend: crime rates are rising, and society’s approach to dealing with repeat offenders seems increasingly inadequate.
Historically, tough-on-crime policies dominated, but over the years, there’s been a noticeable shift towards leniency. This pendulum swing, intended to promote rehabilitation, has led to unintended consequences.
Recent statistics paint a worrying picture. In many areas, theft, assault, and other violent crimes are on the rise. The numbers are not just figures on a page; they represent real people whose lives are upended by these offences. Communities are left grappling with fear and insecurity, wondering why the system appears to be failing them.
There’s a growing perception that the justice system has become too lenient. Sentences often feel more like slaps on the wrist than justice. In many recent cases, repeat offenders
continue to be released on bail only to reoffend within weeks. These are not isolated incidents but a troubling pattern. Victims of crime often feel overlooked in the current system. They see their perpetrators walk free with minimal consequences, leading to a profound sense of injustice. One victim shared, “It feels like the system cares more about the rights of the criminal than my safety and well-being.” This sentiment is shared by many who feel that their suffering is not adequately acknowledged or addressed.
Diversionary programs, designed to rehabilitate rather than punish, have their place in our justice system. Some programs have high rates of success and that should not be overlooked. But when criminals repeatedly cycle through these programs without real change, it’s clear something is amiss.
As a society, we must believe in second chances. Rehabilitation and redemption are noble goals, but there is a limit. When offenders are given third, fourth, or even fifth chances, the system starts to lose its credibility. Public opinion strongly supports the idea of rehabilitation, but not at the expense of public safety. There must be a balance between offering help and ensuring accountability.
Our police forces are on the front lines, doing an amazing job under increasingly challenging conditions. They are often the first responders, dealing with dangerous situations and protecting our communities. Despite their tireless efforts and sacrifices, their work is frequently undermined by a justice system that does not provide the necessary support. Police officers are repeatedly arresting the same offenders, only to see them released with minimal consequences. This cycle is demoralising and hampers their ability to effectively protect the public.
It’s time to re-evaluate our approach to crime and punishment. Stricter sentencing policies must be considered to deter repeat offenders and protect our communities. At the same time, we should not abandon rehabilitation efforts but rather refine and improve them. Effective programs, coupled with firm consequences, can help strike the right balance.
Our justice system must serve to protect the innocent and ensure that crime does not pay. By recalibrating our approach and giving more support to our police forces, we can build a safer, more just society for all.
The
Many people think they can’t a ord to get aged care advice, but the reality is you probably can’t a ord not to get advice.
RADs, DAPs, MPIRs, MTAs and ACATs !! These are just a few of the acronyms you will face when navigating aged care decisions.
Navigating your way through aged care and the jargon is not easy. Frustration, confusion and anxiety are feelings you are likely to experience, especially if you have arrived at this point with little preparation.
That’s where I can help. I have the experience and expertise to help you make well-informed aged care decisions. I can show you how you can afford the care you need and understand how it all works – saving you time, stress and money.
Avoiding mistakes is a good reason to seek advice. Five key mistakes I often see people make when they don’t get advice include:
• Selling the home without understanding the consequences
• Being afraid to pay a lump sum (refundable accommodation deposit - RAD)
• Not generating enough cashflow
• Providing the wrong information to Services
Australia and paying too much in fees
• Finding a way to pay for care but not evaluating other possible options.
care fees and an estate dispute when they want to recover the money.
Advice should focus on more than just the costs on date of entry into care. You want the advice to also forecast how your finances will be affected over time, to make sure you don’t run out of money or make bad longer-term decisions. Examples of advice gone bad, include:
• If keeping the home, not understanding how the age pension changes after two years.
• Structuring finances to qualify as a low-means resident, without realising this may make it harder to find a place with some aged care providers.
• A person may gain comfort that the home is exempt if an eligible carer continues to live there, but what seems like an affordable option could soon be a financial disaster if the carer loses income support and this was not anticipated.
• One child in a family uses their own money to help a parent pay the lump sum Refundable Accommodation Deposit/Contribution, and only too late realises that this resulted in higher aged
My advice follows a logical process to consider the financial situation when you first move into care, what will change after that move, what the situation will look like after two years and what to expect when the estate needs to be finalised. This helps to anticipate future changes and mitigate problems as much as possible. When aged care decisions go badly, the mistakes can be costly both financially and emotionally.
As an Accredited Aged Care ProfessionalTM, I can provide advice to remove the uncertainty and help you choose the best strategy for you.
If you want to talk through your options or find out more information for your situation, call my office on 0431 414 799 to find out how I might help.
This advice is general in nature and everyone’s circumstances are different. So it’s important to speak to someone like myself who is a licenced financial adviser (I am an Authorised Representative of Count Financial Limited AFSL 227232).
his month let’s delve into maximising the sale price of your home. Whilst there are many factors to get right when selling your home or property, let’s kick it off with one of the most important ones, the importance of engaging a highly skilled, professional and experienced sales agent also referred to as a high performing agent at the peak of their powers.
High performing agents work closely with you and take control of the sales process from start to finish. They guide you through each and every important step with regular and clear communication which not only reduces the stress and pressure on you, but most importantly maximises the selling price of your home or property.
High performing agents add value in the following key areas:
Local Market Knowledge: High performing real estate agents possess invaluable insights into the local market dynamics, trends, and buyer preferences. On the Coffs Coast where market conditions can vary from one suburb or location to another, this intimate knowledge is instrumental in setting an optimal selling price, identifying unique selling points, working with buyers effectively and managing negotiations proactively to drive the selling price upwards.
Pricing Strategy: Determining the right selling method and price is a delicate balance that requires a deep understanding of local market conditions and property type and
value. High performing real estate agents utilise comprehensive market analysis tools, their knowledge of recent sales and current competing properties on the market (the competition), as well as hot buyers currently in the market to recommend an overall pricing strategy that maximises buyer enquiry levels while remaining competitive. Overpricing can lead to prolonged listing times and ultimately lower final sale prices, while under pricing can leave money on the table, the biggest mistake when selling, which actually happens more than you think!
High performing agents will not always tell you what you want to hear, they will advise you in a very clear, informed and objective manner in order to maximise the selling price for you.
Marketing Expertise: Effective marketing is essential for attracting qualified buyers and generating maximum buyer interest in the property. High performing agents have the expertise to put together a comprehensive marketing plan to maximise buyer enquiry, inspections and most importantly the ultimate selling price. They are experts in professional marketing resources including high-quality photography, drone imagery, virtual tours, signage, floor plans, emotive and compelling text and targeted advertising channels including social and digital media.
High performing agents know how to showcase the property’s unique features and lifestyle appeal to resonate with potential buyers to generate competitive bidding, hence driving
up the selling price. On the Coffs Coast where reaching a broad audience around Australia and even overseas requires more creative strategies, their expertise in leveraging both traditional and digital marketing channels can make all the difference in the end result achieved.
Negotiation Skills: Negotiating the sale price is one of the most critical aspects of the sale, and having a highly skilled negotiator on your side can significantly impact the final outcome. High performing agents possess advanced and sophisticated negotiation skills honed through years of training and experience, enabling them to advocate for their clients’ best interests and secure the highest possible sale price as well as other important terms and conditions including deposit levels, settlement periods, inclusions and exclusions and agreed special conditions.
A highly skilled agent embraces the challenge of negotiations through advanced communication skills and is able to maximise the selling price for the home owner while helping the buyer secure the property of their dreams often in a competitive environment with all parties being extremely happy with the outcome.
Based on my over 20 years experience in listing and selling homes on the Coffs Coast, I believe that this is the single biggest reason to choose a highly skilled and experienced agent to sell your home!
Next month I will continue with additional important factors to consider to maximise the selling price of your property.
