argo is a great home because it offers balance.
People here work hard, but life doesn’t feel rushed or anonymous. You can build a career, start a business, and raise a family. Housing is still within reach for many, and the city continues to grow in
ways that create new jobs and new energy.
Fargo also has the kind of everyday quality that matters. The schools are strong. Parks and trails are easy to access. Downtown has become a true hub, with local restaurants, shops, and events that bring people
together. It’s a place where you can spend a Saturday at a farmers market, catch a concert, or just enjoy a walk without needing to travel far.
What really sets Fargo apart is the people. Neighbors show up for each other. Local businesses are supported. When challenges come, the
community responds. That sense of connection is hard to find, and it makes the city feel steady and welcoming.
Fargo is big enough to offer options, but small enough to still feel personal.
For many, Fargo is more than just where they live. It’s where
they put down roots, find support, and build a life that feels grounded. That’s what makes it a great home.

Tired of Being Tired?
By Dr. Jake Grinaker, Owner, Strive Chiropractic
If you wake up exhausted, push through the day on caffeine, and still don’t feel rested after a full night’s sleep, you’re not alone. Chronic fatigue and poor sleep have become so common that many people assume it’s normal. It’s not.
Nearly one in three adults doesn’t get enough quality sleep, and ongoing exhaustion has been linked to weight gain, anxiety, depression, heart disease, chronic pain, and more. Yet many people are told everything looks “fine” in their lab work and medical screenings. That’s because sleep issues are often blamed on stress or lifestyle, when they’re actually frequently rooted in nervous system dysfunction.
Why Sleep Quantity Isn’t the Whole Story
You can spend eight hours in bed and still wake up tired if your body never truly relaxes. When the spine is restricted or under constant tension, the nervous system stays stuck in fight-or-flight mode. This can lead to: shallow or restless sleep, frequent waking, racing thoughts, morning stiffness and fatigue, feeling “wired but tired.”
Your body simply doesn’t know how to shut off.
The Spine–Nervous System–Sleep Connection
Your spine protects the spinal cord, which is the main communication
pathway between your brain and body. When that system is stressed, stress hormones stay elevated, muscles remain tight, breathing stays shallow, and sleep becomes lighter and less restorative. This is why people with neck and back tension, headaches, jaw clenching, poor posture, or chronic stress often struggle with ongoing fatigue, even when they’re “doing everything right.”
Why Getting Checked Matters
At Strive Chiropractic, we don’t just ask how long you sleep—we assess whether your body is capable of resting. Our comprehensive evaluation looks at the hidden tension that keeps your body on high alert. Using advanced diagnostic tools, we can objectively identify nervous system dysfunction and pinpoint what may be driving your exhaustion.
Real Rest Starts With a Calmer Nervous System
When spinal stress is reduced and the nervous system can finally relax, many people report falling asleep faster, sleeping deeper, relying less on caffeine, and having more energy throughout the day.
People often struggle with poor sleep and constant fatigue, even when they’re “doing everything right.”
Stop normalizing exhaustion.
You don’t need more caffeine. You don’t need to just push through. If you’re constantly tired, your body is asking for help.
Get checked. Get answers. Get your energy back.
Strive Chiropractic is here to help you stop surviving your days and start feeling rested, focused, and energized again.
AA ring is more than jewelry. It’s a lasting symbol of love, commitment, and the life you’re building together. That’s why finding the right one should feel personal, meaningful, and truly worth it.
That’s exactly what Wimmer’s Diamonds celebrates each year with its annual Ring & Band Spectacular, now in its fifth year. Happening March 19–24, the event offers special savings across the store from engagement rings and right-hand styles to stackable bands and timeless wedding sets with a focus on helping couples choose his-and-her wedding bands together, thoughtfully, and with real value in mind.
More Savings AND More Choices
The Ring & Band Spectacular isn’t part of a constant discount cycle. In fact, Wimmer’s rarely runs promotions. This event is intentionally limited, both in timing and purpose.
It’s the only ring focused event of the year.
During this five-day window, Wimmer’s dramatically expands its in-store selection, showcasing hundreds of additional men’s and women’s wedding bands, many of which are not available at any other time. This event, held just ahead of peak wedding season, is perfectly timed for couples beginning their wedding planning journey.
More options mean more styles and less pressure. When couples can see, try on, and compare a wide range of bands
in one place, the process becomes about discovering what actually feels right.
Savings are part of the draw, too. The Ring & Band Spectacular uses a tiered structure:
• 10% off first ring
• 20% off second ring
• 30% off third ring
The highest-priced ring receives the smallest discount, while additional rings receive deeper savings.
And increasingly, that means buying more than one band. continued>
Why Three Rings are More Common Than You Think
Traditionally, couples think in terms of two rings—an engagement ring and a wedding band. In reality, most weddings involve three.
There’s the engagement ring, typically purchased months earlier. Then come the wedding bands—one for the bride, and one for the groom. Some brides also choose a second band for stacking, one on each side of the engagement ring or both on the same side.
Shopping Together
Unlike engagement rings—where secrecy and surprise often play a role—wedding bands are usually chosen together.
10% off first ring
20% off second ring
30% off third ring
By the time couples are shopping for bands, the focus has shifted from making a grand gesture to making a long-term decision. Comfort, durability, lifestyle, and personal style all matter. So does budget.
Wimmer’s encourages couples to come in with a general price range in mind and, if possible, inspiration photos. Pinterest boards, TikTok screenshots, and saved images are common starting points—even if what looks good online doesn’t always translate the same way in person.
The VIP Appointment
Walk-ins are always welcome, but appointments allow the team at Wimmer’s to give couples the attention they deserve.
When couples schedule ahead, staff can prepare selections in advance, particularly if an engagement ring has a unique shape that limits which bands will fit properly.
Even if you’re not shopping for an engagement ring or wedding bands, you can still enjoy event savings on anniversary bands & fashion rings too!
That preparation reduces trial-and-error and allows couples to spend more time comparing meaningful options instead of eliminating incompatible ones.
It also ensures dedicated, uninterrupted attention—something many couples appreciate during such a personal decision. Did you know?
Remodel, Rebuild, Redecorate, or Rethink It
A remodel can be as simple as refreshing a tired kitchen, or as big as reworking an entire floor plan.
That's why we put together a list of businesses based on Google ratings, talked to experts, and interior

interview:
YOU OFFER EVERYTHING FROM SINGLE-ROOM REMODELS TO FULL NEW BUILDS—HOW DO YOU HELP HOMEOWNERS DECIDE THE BEST PATH FOR
We start by learning how the home needs to function for the people who live in it. Sometimes a kitchen update is all that’s needed to make daily life easier. Other times, changes across the home drive far more value than updating one room at a time. Once we understand goals, timing, and investment, we outline multiple paths—showing what each achieves and how it impacts
WHAT ADVANTAGES DO HOMEOWNERS GAIN BY WORKING WITH A COMPANY THAT CAN HANDLE EVERY STAGE OF REMODELING?
Coordination, clarity, and cost control. When design, permitting, materials, scheduling, and construction are all connected, you avoid misalignment, rework, and costly surprises. We manage the entire process so homeowners can make decisions confidently and see their project move forward without friction.
WHAT MAKES A KITCHEN REMODEL SUCCESSFUL BEYOND JUST NEW CABINETS AND
A successful kitchen remodel solves how a family cooks, gathers, and moves through the space. Storage, layout flow, appliance placement, and sightlines influence how a home feels far more than a finish selection. Once function is right, finishes
WHAT ARE THE BIGGEST PRIORITIES HOMEOWNERS HAVE WHEN REMODELING A BATHROOM TODAY?
Comfort, accessibility, and materials that stand up to humidity and daily use. Homeowners want better showers, improved storage, intentional lighting, and a calmer atmosphere for morning and evening routines.
ABOUT THE HOME AUTHORITY, INC.
The Home Authority, Inc. is a trusted Fargo–Moorhead home remodeling and general contracting company with more than 30 years of experience transforming houses into functional, beautiful living spaces. They specialize in fullhome renovations, including kitchen, bathroom, and basement remodels, custom home builds, and additions, guiding homeowners through every step—from design and budgeting to project coordination and final completion—with craftsmanship, clear communication, and a fixed-price approach that eliminates surprise costs. The Home Authority also partners closely with in-house design and specialty teams to deliver integrated solutions and personalized results that reflect each family’s style and needs, making the remodeling process as seamless and stress-free as possible.
WHEN DOES IT MAKE SENSE TO REMODEL AN ENTIRE HOME INSTEAD OF MOVING?
When the location works, the lot is right, and the home has the bones to support modern living. Remodeling can bring decades-old floor plans up to today’s standards without leaving a neighborhood you love.
HOW DO YOU APPROACH WHOLE-HOME REMODELS TO ENSURE FLOW, COHESION, AND FUNCTIONALITY?
We look at the home as a system—how spaces connect, storage, sightlines, natural light, and material transitions. Then we bring design, construction, and scheduling into one coordinated plan. The result is a home that feels unified, intentional, and built to last.
WHAT FEATURES MAKE A BASEMENT FEEL LIKE A TRUE EXTENSION OF THE HOME?
Quality lighting, cohesive finishes, intentional zoning, and proper climate control. When a basement matches the design language and comfort of the main level, it stops feeling like “extra space” and becomes part of daily life.
WHY DO SO MANY HOMEOWNERS REMODEL SHORTLY AFTER BUYING A HOME?
Buying clarifies what works and what doesn’t. New homeowners quickly identify layout frustrations, storage gaps, and features that don’t support their lifestyle. Remodeling early helps avoid living in disruption twice— once before and once after work begins.
HOW DOES REMODELING A LAKE HOME DIFFER FROM REMODELING A PRIMARY RESIDENCE?
Lake homes are built for gathering, hosting, durability, and seasonal use. Storage, flooring, mechanicals, and moisture considerations often drive decisions just as much as finishes and views.

PAINTING, DRYWALL, WALL TREATMENTS
WEYER COMPANIES

Oh No… Not Millennial Gray
A friend said something to me recently that caught me off guard.
“Shawn, we need help,” she told me. “We have to get rid of this Millennial Gray. It’s everywhere.”
“I smiled, and then I realized she had a point.”
SHAWN WEYER, OWNER, Weyer Companies
For more than a decade, gray was the safe choice. It worked with everything. It photographed well. And before we knew it, entire homes were painted some version of the same palette; Repose Gray, Agreeable Gray, Dorian Gray, Mindful Gray… you name it.
Some of those cooler grays are starting to feel less aligned with where design is headed. Not because they're “bad,” but because design has shifted. People want their homes to feel warmer, softer, and more lived-in again.
If you’re looking around and wondering, Uh oh… is this Millennial Gray? don’t panic. You don’t need to gut your house to make it feel current. Sometimes the biggest transformation is as simple as choosing the right paint, and doing it the right way.
GRAY ISN’T THE ENEMY
Paint should never be the star of the show. It’s the backdrop. It’s there to support your furniture, your flooring, your light fixtures, your lifestyle.
If you love gray, keep it. A lot of today’s grays can still work beautifully, especially when they’re paired with warmer lighting, natural woods, textured rugs, and finishes that add contrast and depth.
But if your home feels cold, flat, or dated, and you’re ready for
something different, you’re not alone. The shift is real.
WHAT’S REPLACING MILLENNIAL GRAY?
We’re seeing homeowners move toward colors that feel calm and grounded, and tones that make a space feel inviting the second you walk in.
The most requested directions right now are:
• Warm whites (not bright, sterile whites)
• Soft beiges
• Light mushroom tones
• Earthy neutrals that read cozy instead of cool
These warmer colors pair naturally with what’s popular in homes right now, including light woods (like white oak), softer finishes, and a more layered, comfortable look overall.
THE MOST IMPORTANT RULE WHEN PICKING PAINT
Don’t pick and go.
“Just paint it white” sounds simple, until you realize there are a hundred different whites, all with undertones that change depending on your lighting and what’s in the room.
Here’s how to avoid regret:
1) Always sample the exact product and sheen you’ll use.A matte sample and an eggshell final coat won’t read the same on the wall.
2) Test it in your actual space. - Put it on the wall and look at it in the morning, afternoon, and night. Natural light changes everything. So do warm bulbs, cool bulbs, and shadows.
3) Go bigger than you think. If you’re painting a large open
space or an entire home, use a larger sample area. Bigger samples reveal undertones and help you avoid “surprises” once
ultimately, you’re the one living there. Trust your eye.
And yes, if you still love Agreeable Gray (It really is

WINDOWS, DOORS, SIDING, EXTERIOR REMODELING
expert interview:
Failing caulking and flashing due to freeze/thaw cycles
Poor drainage causing foundation and basement
Outdated windows leading to heat loss and drafts
These issues are climate-driven and worsen quickly if not
HOW DO HOMEOWNERS CHOOSE THE RIGHT SIDING MATERIAL FOR THEIR HOME AND
Choosing the right siding comes down to finding the right balance between durability, maintenance, budget, and appearance—especially in our Fargo–Moorhead climate.
is an affordable, low-maintenance option that resists moisture and never needs painting. It is a popular choice for homeowners looking for cost efficiency and a wide range of color and style
offers exceptional durability with superior resistance to hail, wind, fire, and fading. It is ideal for homeowners who want longterm performance, minimal maintenance, and added protection in extreme weather
Siding excels in longevity and strength. It provides excellent resistance to impact, fire, moisture, and pests while offering a more refined, architectural appearance. It is a great option for homeowners seeking durability with an upscale look. Wood Siding delivers the natural beauty of real wood with enhanced durability and better resistance to moisture and pests. It is well-suited for homeowners who want a warm, traditional

aesthetic without the high maintenance of natural wood.
Homeowners should also consider sun exposure, neighborhood aesthetics, desired maintenance level, and long-term plans for the home when selecting the best siding solution.
WHAT SIGNS INDICATE IT IS TIME TO REPLACE
SIDING?
Key warning signs include:
• Cracks, warping, or loose panels
• Fading or chalking
• Moisture or rot behind panels
• Increased energy bills
• Frequent repainting or repairs
In our climate, these often indicate underlying moisture or insulation issues—not just cosmetic wear.
WHY ARE GUTTERS ONE OF THE MOST OVERLOOKED— YET CRITICAL—EXTERIOR SYSTEMS?
Gutters control where water goes. Without properly functioning gutters, water can compromise foundations, erode soil, and lead to basement leaks. In snow-heavy regions like ours, seamless gutters are essential to manage meltwater and prevent icerelated damage.
WHAT PROBLEMS CAN FAILING OR IMPROPERLY INSTALLED GUTTERS CAUSE?
Common issues include:
• Foundation settling or cracking
• Basement water intrusion
• Rotting framing substructure, fascia, and soffit
• Landscape erosion
These problems often cost far more to fix than replacing or upgrading the gutter system.
HOW OFTEN SHOULD GUTTERS BE INSPECTED OR MAINTAINED?
Gutters should be inspected at least twice a year—in spring and fall—and after major storms. Homes with mature trees or receive heavy snowfall may require more frequent checks to prevent clogs, ice buildup, and sagging.
WHAT ROLE DO SOFFIT AND FASCIA PLAY IN PROTECTING A HOME?
Soffit and fascia are critical to ventilation and structural protection. Soffits allow airflow that prevents moisture buildup in attics, while fascia supports the gutter system and protects roof edges. Damaged or poorly ventilated soffit and fascia can lead to ice dams, rot, and premature roof failure.
WHAT MAKES STACKED STONE SIDING SUCH A POPULAR EXTERIOR ACCENT?
Stacked stone adds texture, depth, and a high-end appearance without overwhelming the façade. It performs exceptionally well in our climate, resists moisture and impact, and creates strong visual contrast— especially around entryways, columns,

Proudly serving the Upper Midwest, they specialize in premium siding, soffit and fascia, gutters, window and door installations, stacked stone accents, and custom decking—all designed to boost curb appeal, durability, and
and lower elevations—boosting curb appeal and perceived value.
HOW DO OLD OR INEFFICIENT WINDOWS IMPACT ENERGY BILLS AND COMFORT?
Outdated windows allow heat loss, cold drafts, and UV penetration. In winter, this Forces furnaces to work harder; in summer, it increases cooling costs. They also cause uneven room temperatures and condensation issues, reducing overall comfort.
WHAT DECKING MATERIALS OFFER THE BEST BALANCE OF DURABILITY AND STYLE?
Composite decking and traditional wood decking are the most common options homeowners consider.
• Composite Decking offers long-term durability with minimal maintenance. It resists moisture, rot, warping, and fading, making it well-suited for harsh freeze/ thaw climates. It does not require staining or sealing and maintains a consistent appearance over time.
• Wood Decking provides a natural, classic look with a lower upfront cost. It requires regular maintenance, including staining and sealing, to protect against moisture, sun exposure, and temperature extremes.
Composite decking is ideal for homeowners who want minimal maintenance and long-term performance, while wood decking appeals to those who prefer traditional aesthetics and initial affordability.

HVAC, HEATING & COOLING, INDOOR AIR QUALITY, AND PLUMBING
PRECISION PLUMBING
MATT SHARP, Business Development Executive, Precision Plumbing
expert interview:
YOUR COMPANY HANDLES MULTIPLE CRITICAL HOME SYSTEMS. HOW DOES THAT BENEFIT HOMEOWNERS?
Having plumbing, heating, cooling, water treatment, and dirt work handled by one trusted company means homeowners don’t have to coordinate multiple contractors. Our team understands how these systems affect one another, which leads to better diagnoses, faster solutions, and long-term fixes rather than temporary patches. It also builds consistency; homeowners know who they’re calling and can trust that the work is done right.
WHAT ARE THE MOST COMMON PROBLEMS HOMEOWNERS CALL YOU ABOUT ACROSS ALL SERVICES?
Most calls involve plumbing leaks, clogged drains, failing water heaters, inconsistent heating or cooling, and drainage concerns around the home. In our region, water quality issues and seasonal HVAC breakdowns are also very common, especially during temperature extremes.
HOW DO PREVENTATIVE SERVICES SAVE HOMEOWNERS MONEY LONG-TERM?
Preventative maintenance helps catch small issues before they turn into major repairs. A minor plumbing leak, restricted airflow, or drainage issue can cause extensive damage if ignored. Regular inspections and tuneups extend system life, improve efficiency, and help homeowners avoid emergency calls, which are almost always more expensive.
WHAT PLUMBING ISSUES DO YOU SEE MOST OFTEN IN HOMES IN OUR REGION?
We frequently see frozen or aging pipes, water heater failures, clogged sewer lines, sump pump issues, and leaks caused by corrosion or shifting soil. Hard water buildup is also a major contributor to premature plumbing wear in our area.
HOW CAN HOMEOWNERS SPOT EARLY SIGNS OF PLUMBING PROBLEMS BEFORE THEY BECOME EMERGENCIES?
Warning signs include slow drains, unusual sounds in pipes, water pressure changes, unexplained increases in water bills, moisture around fixtures, or discoloration in water. Addressing these early can prevent significant damage. Additionally, by adding multiple water leak detectors around critical fixtures and appliances can help to notify you of a leak before it becomes too great or starts to affect infrastructure in the home.
WHAT HEATING AND COOLING CONCERNS ARE MOST COMMON IN OUR CLIMATE?
Extreme temperature swings put a lot of stress on HVAC systems. Common issues include uneven heating, furnaces struggling to keep up in winter, air conditioners freezing or failing during peak summer heat, and poor airflow caused by dirty filters or restricted ductwork.
HOW OFTEN SHOULD HVAC SYSTEMS BE SERVICED, AND WHY?
HVAC systems should be serviced at least once a year, ideally twice: once before heating season and once before cooling season. Regular
service improves efficiency, prevents breakdowns during extreme weather, and helps identify safety concerns early. With our new Care Plans we now proactively reach out to you with your membership and schedule those services to eliminate the "forgot to do it" factor.
WHAT SIGNS INDICATE IT’S TIME TO REPLACE A FURNACE OR AIR CONDITIONER?
If a system is more than 15-20 years old, needs frequent repairs, struggles to maintain comfort, or causes energy bills to rise, replacement may be the smarter investment. New systems are far more efficient and reliable.
WHAT TYPES OF DIRT WORK PROJECTS DO HOMEOWNERS MOST COMMONLY NEED?
Homeowners often need excavation for sewer or water line repairs, grading to correct drainage problems, foundation prep for additions or garages, and trenching for utilities. Drainage correction is one of the most important and overlooked projects.
HOW CAN HOMEOWNERS TELL IF THEY NEED WATER TREATMENT?
Signs include hard water stains, scale buildup on fixtures, dry skin, poor-tasting water, appliance issues, or frequent plumbing repairs. A professional water test is the best way to determine what treatment is needed, which we can provide.
WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF WATER SOFTENERS OR FILTRATION SYSTEMS?
Water treatment systems protect plumbing, improve appliance efficiency, extend system lifespan, and improve water taste and quality. Softened and filtered water is also easier on skin, clothing, and fixtures.
WHAT MISCONCEPTIONS DO HOMEOWNERS HAVE ABOUT WATER TREATMENT?
Many believe treatment systems are only about taste or that they’re difficult to maintain. In reality, they protect plumbing systems and appliances and
are relatively simple to maintain when properly installed.
HOW OFTEN SHOULD WATER TREATMENT SYSTEMS BE MAINTAINED?
Most systems need annual checkups, with salt refills or filter changes as needed. Regular maintenance ensures consistent performance and prevents costly failures. Every system has it's own recommended service iterations so it's best to call our service team to best determine how often your specific equipment needs maintenance.
WHAT’S THE MOST EXPENSIVE PROBLEM YOU SEE THAT COULD HAVE BEEN PREVENTED?
Water damage caused by undetected leaks, frozen pipes, failed sump pumps, or improper drainage is often the most costly, and most preventable issue. Early inspections and routine maintenance could avoid many of these repairs, along with proper leak detection systems.

AURA OUTDOOR LIGHTING
(4 Google Reviews)
ANDY BAER, OWNER AND INSTALLER
Aura Outdoor Lighting
expert interview:
WHAT ARE THE MOST COMMON REASONS HOMEOWNERS DECIDE TO ADD OUTDOOR LIGHTING?
Homeowners seek to improve safety and security. Illuminating steps, walkways, driveways, and dark areas around the home are ways to achieve this. Homeowners want access to their spaces at night time for entertaining, relaxing and other outdoor activities otherwise limited by sunlight.
AT WHAT POINT IN OWNING A HOME DOES OUTDOOR LIGHTING MAKE THE MOST SENSE— NEW BUILD, RENOVATION, OR LATER?
With regard to new builds, if the landscaping is being done, then landscape lighting should follow it and can be part of the construction loan. Having a completed landscape in place can help focus a landscape lighting installation. As plants and trees evolve throughout the property, they can be enhanced with landscape lighting and really change the personality of your home after dark. Highlighting architectural wall textures, rock wall formations, and even the bark of trees all offer eyecatching interest with outdoor landscape lighting.
WHAT AREAS OF THE HOME USUALLY BENEFIT THE MOST FROM LIGHTING RIGHT AWAY?
Lighting pathways around the house that provide safe passage. Front entry areas. steps or grade changes. Architectural elements of the home and other focal features like trees, rocks formations and retaining walls.
WHAT SHOULD HOMEOWNERS THINK ABOUT BEFORE THEIR FIRST CONSULTATION?
Which areas of their property do they want to see highlighted? Which traffic areas are used the most, steps, and grade changes that would benefit from adding illumination at night? Where are their outdoor electrical power outlets?
HOW CUSTOMIZABLE IS A LIGHTING PLAN FOR A HOMEOWNER’S
SPECIFIC LIFESTYLE AND PROPERTY?
The options available today are very customizable. There are a wide variety of light fixture styles. Most people think of path lights when thinking about outdoor lighting. There are uplights staked into the ground, there are down lights mounted up into the trees and pointing down, well lights which are dug into and flush to ground level, and completely out of sight. Lights that are designed for underwater use to highlight landscape water features, and many more. Adding color fixtures to a project really allows unique options for the systems we install today.
WHAT TYPES OF OUTDOOR LIGHTING SYSTEMS ARE BEST FOR MOST HOMES TODAY?
LED bulbs or integrated LED light fixtures are professionally installed and offered by reputable manufacturers that are well known in our industry. The best outdoor lighting systems combine energy efficiency, durability, and are easy to expand upon. The systems we offer are designed to work year-round in our harsh weather seasons.
HOW ENERGY-EFFICIENT ARE MODERN OUTDOOR LIGHTING SYSTEMS?
Todays LED lightings systems are extremely energy efficient and will have a very small impact on the homeowners electrical bill.

WHAT FACTORS MOST INFLUENCE THE COST OF AN OUTDOOR LIGHTING PROJECT?
The main factors in cost are the quantity of fixtures, the size of the illumination output of each fixture, the type of fixture, and the size of the property.
DOES OUTDOOR LIGHTING ADD RESALE OR CURBAPPEAL VALUE TO A
HOME?
A professionally installed outdoor landscape lighting system will enhance the curb appeal. When you consider the elaborate and beautiful landscapes that many homeowners have installed at their homes, most times it is only visible during the day. Imagine, when illuminated at night, the landscape and the architectural elements of the home take on a totally different personality.
HOW LONG DO OUTDOOR LIGHTING SYSTEMS TYPICALLY LAST?
The integrated LED fixtures have a lifespan of fifty thousand to seventy thousand hours. The outdoor lighting systems we represent have a 10 year warranty. We also provide a service to provide system upkeep after the first year the system is installed. Plants and trees are not static
and evolve. The lights that are highlighting those need to be adjusted, replanted and aimed properly. We also check all of the fixtures to make sure they are working and clean the glass on the fixtures to give them the illumination output that they are intended to provide.
CAN LIGHTING BE ADJUSTED SEASONALLY OR FOR SPECIAL OCCASIONS?
Yes, our smart transformers allow lights to be programmed with different color themes. Common themes are red, white, and blue for the 4th of July, along with red and green for Christmas. Our smart transformer allows us to section off parts of the property to suit whichever situation the homeowner desires. An example during the winter season could be scheduling the front yard lights to turn on daily at sunset. While the back yard lights only turn on during weekends.
WHAT’S ONE MISCONCEPTION HOMEOWNERS OFTEN HAVE ABOUT OUTDOOR LIGHTING?
Some homeowners assume that outdoor landscape lighting is just for looks. Properly installed landscape lighting provides safety, security, and function. Professionally installed and supported outdoor landscape lighting is an investment that will provide value for your home.

WAY TO APPROACH A SMARTER HOME REMODELING
INTERIOR PAINTING
Interior painting is often the first project homeowners tackle—and for good reason. It’s accessible, relatively inexpensive, and doesn’t require specialized training. A fresh coat of paint can completely change how a space feels, making it one of the highest-impact upgrades available.
That said, painting well involves more than opening a can and rolling color onto the wall. The quality of the final result is determined largely by preparation. Walls need to be patched, sanded, cleaned, and primed. Trim needs steady hands and patience. Ceilings and stairwells introduce physical challenges that can quickly exhaust even motivated DIYers.
For homeowners willing to take their time, interior painting is a strong DIY project. The learning curve is manageable, mistakes are usually cosmetic, and the tools required are affordable. Many first-time painters are surprised to learn that the work is less about painting and more about prep—but that effort pays off.
Hiring a professional painter makes sense when time is limited, ceilings are tall, or a flawless finish matters. Experienced painters work quickly, cut cleaner lines, and leave consistent coverage that’s difficult to achieve on a first attempt. In high-traffic or highly visible spaces, that polish can be worth the cost.
Verdict: Interior painting is a solid DIY project for patient homeowners, but professionals shine when speed and precision matter.
Verdict: LVP and laminate can be DIY-friendly with preparation and patience. Hardwood flooring is almost always worth hiring a professional.
FLOORING KITCHENS
Flooring changes how a home looks and feels more than almost any other upgrade. It’s also one of the most permanent decisions a homeowner makes. Once installed, mistakes are difficult—and expensive—to undo.
Luxury vinyl plank and laminate flooring have made DIY installation more approachable than ever. These systems are designed to float, click together, and accommodate some minor imperfections. With careful planning, proper tools, and attention to detail, many homeowners successfully install these floors themselves.
Where DIY flooring often runs into trouble is beneath the surface. Uneven subfloors,
A kitchen remodel is rarely just one project. It’s a chain reaction of decisions involving layout, cabinetry, countertops, plumbing, electrical work, and finishes. Small miscalculations early in the process can ripple outward, affecting everything that follows.
Cosmetic updates, such as painting cabinets, replacing hardware, or installing a backsplash, are often within reach for experienced DIYers. These projects can refresh a kitchen without altering its underlying structure.
BATHROOMS
moisture issues, and poor transitions can cause long-term problems that don’t appear right away. Cutting around doorways and maintaining consistent expansion gaps requires patience and precision.
Hardwood flooring is a different category entirely. It demands a flat substrate, careful acclimation, precise fastening, and experience with layout. Errors show immediately and permanently. For most homeowners, hardwood installation is best left to professionals who understand how wood behaves over time.
The risks rise sharply when layout changes are involved. Cabinets must be perfectly level to support countertops. Appliances require exact clearances. Plumbing and electrical systems must meet code. A kitchen that looks good but functions poorly becomes frustrating fast.
Professional kitchen remodelers bring more than labor to the table. They understand sequencing, spacing, and how to avoid common layout mistakes that homeowners don’t realize until the kitchen is already installed.
Verdict: Kitchens benefit from a hybrid approach. DIY cosmetic updates make sense, but layout, cabinetry, plumbing, and electrical work are best handled by professionals.
Verdict: DIY cosmetic upgrades are reasonable. For showers, tubs, and waterproofing, hiring a professional is the safer choice.
Bathrooms may be some of the smallest rooms in a home, but they carry some of the highest risks. Water, electricity, ventilation, and tight construction tolerances all converge in a limited space. When something goes wrong in a bathroom, the damage often extends far beyond what’s visible on the surface.
On the DIY side, surface-level upgrades can be manageable. Replacing a vanity, installing a new toilet, swapping faucets, or updating mirrors and lighting can significantly improve a bathroom’s look without touching critical systems. These projects allow homeowners to make visible improvements while keeping risk relatively low.
The line is crossed when waterproofing becomes part of the equation. Showers, tubs, and tiled walls demand precise waterproofing systems and proper drainage. A small mistake—a missed seam, an improperly sloped floor, or the wrong fastener—can allow moisture to penetrate behind walls and under floors. The result isn’t immediate failure, but slow, expensive damage that may not surface for years.
Professional bathroom remodelers understand how water moves, where failures tend to occur, and how to build systems that hold up long-term. That expertise is difficult to replicate without experience.
DIY OR HIRE A PRO?
Tile is often underestimated. From a distance, it looks repetitive and straightforward. In reality, tile installation demands precision at every step. Substrates must be flat and properly prepared. Mortar must be applied evenly. Spacing needs to remain consistent across the entire surface. Once tile is set, there is very little margin for correction.
Small tile projects—like a kitchen backsplash or a laundry room floor—can be approachable for homeowners willing to move slowly and practice first. These spaces allow for learning without catastrophic consequences, especially when the tile isn’t a major focal point.
Verdict: Minor electrical replacements can be DIY. Anything involving new wiring, panels, or major remodels should be handled by a licensed professional.
Larger tile installations, particularly floors and showers, amplify every mistake. Uneven tiles create lippage that’s visible and uncomfortable underfoot. Improper mortar coverage leads to cracked tile. In wet areas, inadequate waterproofing compounds the problem.
Professional tile installers don’t just place tile. They solve substrate problems before the tile ever goes down. That preparation is what separates a tile job that lasts from one that fails.
Verdict: Small, lowvisibility tile projects can be DIY. Large, wet, or highly visible tile work is best left to professionals.
ELECTRICAL WORK
Electrical projects are often legal for homeowners to perform, but legality doesn’t always equate to wisdom. Electricity carries inherent safety risks, and mistakes aren’t always immediately apparent. Poor connections, overloaded circuits, or improper grounding can create hazards that emerge long after the work is completed.
Simple tasks like replacing outlets, switches, or light fixtures can be reasonable DIY projects for homeowners who take the time to learn proper procedures and follow local code. Even then, attention to detail is critical.
Once a project involves adding circuits, modifying panels, or rewiring rooms, the risks increase significantly. Electrical systems must be sized correctly, grounded properly, and installed to code. Errors here can lead to failed inspections, insurance issues, or fire hazards.
Licensed electricians bring not only technical knowledge, but accountability. Their work is inspected, insured, and designed to meet current standards.
PLUMBING PROJECTS
Plumbing work has a way of looking simple on the surface while hiding its real complexity behind walls and under floors. A faucet replacement can feel no more intimidating than assembling furniture, which is why many homeowners gain confidence quickly. That confidence becomes risky when the work moves beyond what’s visible.
Basic fixture swaps—faucets, toilets, showerheads, and sink traps—are generally safe DIY projects when done carefully. These upgrades improve function and appearance without altering supply lines or drainage systems. Even then, attention to detail matters. A slightly loose connection or an overtightened fitting can lead to slow leaks that go unnoticed until damage appears.
The danger zone begins when plumbing is moved or modified. Drain lines require a precise slope. Venting must be correct to prevent pressure issues. Water lines need proper support and protection. Once walls are opened, mistakes don’t just affect the fixture — they affect framing, insulation, and finishes around it.
Professional plumbers bring experience that prevents problems homeowners often don’t know to anticipate. That knowledge is especially valuable in older homes, where materials and layouts may not match modern standards.
Verdict: DIY fixture replacements are reasonable. Any plumbing work behind walls or under floors should be handled by a professional.

DIY OR HIRE A PRO?
Few remodeling decisions carry more weight than altering a home’s structure. Removing or modifying walls affects how loads are distributed throughout the house.
Many homeowners assume they can identify a load-bearing wall by its orientation or location. In reality, structural systems are complex, and assumptions are often wrong. Floors sag, ceilings crack, and doors shift when loads are not properly supported.
Structural work requires planning, temporary support, correct beam sizing, and often engineering approval. It also typically requires permits and inspections. This is not an area where trial and error is acceptable.
Contractors and structural engineers understand how forces move through a building and how to maintain stability while opening up space. Their involvement isn’t about convenience—it’s about safety.
STRUCTURAL CHANGES AND WALL REMOVAL CABINETS AND COUNTERTOPS
Cabinets and countertops define how a kitchen or bathroom functions day to day. Their installation demands accuracy that many homeowners underestimate. Cabinets must be perfectly level and securely fastened. Countertops rely on that precision to avoid cracking or shifting.
Installing cabinets can be a manageable DIY project for homeowners with patience, proper tools, and a methodical approach. The work is physically demanding and requires careful shimming and alignment, but mistakes are usually correctable before final fastening.
Verdict: Structural changes are always a professional
Countertops, particularly stone, are another matter. They require exact templates, specialized cutting, and careful handling. A small measurement error can ruin an entire slab. Even butcher block and laminate countertops demand careful installation to prevent movement and moisture damage.
Professionals reduce risk by handling both measurement and installation, ensuring the finished product performs as intended.
Verdict: Cabinet installation can be DIY for confident homeowners. Countertops are almost always best left to professionals.
DIY OR HIRE A PRO?
WINDOWS AND DOORS
Windows and doors do far more than control light and access. They are critical components of a home’s exterior envelope, protecting against weather, air infiltration, and energy loss. When installed improperly, even highquality products underperform.
Interior doors are often approachable DIY projects. They primarily require careful measuring, shimming, and patience. Small mistakes are usually correctable, and the consequences are largely cosmetic.
Exterior windows and doors are different. Proper installation involves flashing, sealing, insulation, and structural support. A poorly installed window can allow water to enter the wall cavity, leading to rot, mold, and insulation failure long before the problem becomes visible inside the home.
Professional installers understand how to integrate windows and doors into the surrounding structure and weather barrier system. Many manufacturers also require professional installation to maintain warranties.
Verdict: Interior doors can be DIY. Exterior windows and doors are best handled by professionals.
HOW TO DECIDE
Before starting any remodel, homeowners benefit from stepping back and evaluating the project beyond the initial excitement. The most important factor isn’t whether the work looks easy—it’s what happens if something goes wrong.
Projects with a low cost of failure, minimal safety risk, and forgiving materials are good candidates for DIY. Projects that involve water, electricity, structure, or permanent finishes demand a higher level of caution.
Time also matters. DIY projects almost always take longer than expected, especially when learning curves are involved. A room out of commission for weeks may be manageable in theory but exhausting in practice.
Finally, goals matter. Remodeling to learn and personalize a space invites a different approach than remodeling to maximize resale value or long-term durability.

FEATURED PROJECT: RAMBLER RENOVATION
"Set on a multigenerational family farm, this inherited rambler was reimagined to support a new chapter while respecting its roots. The renovation focused on reworking the home’s core living spaces, beginning with a complete kitchen transformation and a thoughtful reconfiguration of the surrounding layout. Opening up the stairway wall was high on the priorities for the clients."
"A new floor plan opened the kitchen to the dining room and removed the stairway wall, allowing light, sightlines, and daily movement to flow more freely throughout the home. We also added a beverage fridge area that freed up some kitchen space. Updated flooring, tailored millwork, and new interior and exterior doors further unified the spaces, creating a sense of continuity and quiet sophistication."
"What once felt compartmentalized now reads as cohesive and refreshed, an interior that feels entirely new while remaining grounded in its setting. Designed for a young family just beginning to grow, the home balances openness with practicality, offering a flexible foundation for years to come."
DESIGNER Q&A
Q: HOW DID YOU GET STARTED IN INTERIOR DESIGN?
A: I went right from high school into an interior design program at Alexandria Technical College.
Q: WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO BECOME A DESIGNER?
A: I can't really say anything that really inspired me. I was always interested in re-painting my room, and in high school, I took classes in woodworking and landscaping. Those were the only options in my small school that were somewhat related to design.
Q: HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOUR DESIGN STYLE?
A: I think for the most part transitional, but it is everchanging. New things inspire me.
Q: WHAT MAKES YOUR APPROACH OR AESTHETIC UNIQUE?
A: I really try to get as much input from my clients' style and lifestyle when designing their space. It's not my taste, but it is what they tune into that makes it a space they love.
Q: WHAT KINDS OF PROJECTS DO YOU MOST ENJOY WORKING ON?
A: I really love residential renovation of an existing home and making it into a space that they can function in and love without starting from scratch.
Q: HOW HAS YOUR STYLE EVOLVED OVER THE YEARS?
A: I am always looking at other designers' and architects' projects to get inspiration, but also educating myself on new products and finishes to better my knowledge for my clients.
Q: WHAT DO YOU WISH CLIENTS UNDERSTOOD BETTER ABOUT INTERIOR DESIGN?
A: It's not just decoration! 90% of my job is space planning, design documentation, and then selecting the finishes that will actually work in your space.
Q: WHAT DESIGN TRENDS ARE YOU SEEING MOST OFTEN IN THE FM AREA RIGHT NOW?
A: Thoughtfully layered textures that still feel light and effortless.
Q: WHAT PROJECT ARE YOU MOST PROUD OF, AND WHY?
A: I worked on a basement renovation that was old and dungy and we transformed it into a large bar for entertaining and different areas for gaming, serving food, and relaxing. My why—the clients were fun to work with, and they trusted in my process to give them the end result they wanted.
Q: WHAT’S ONE PIECE OF ADVICE YOU ALWAYS GIVE YOUR CLIENTS?
A: Challenges are inevitable in any renovation, but thoughtful problem-solving and patience are what keep the project moving forward.
Q: WHAT COMMON MISTAKES DO HOMEOWNERS MAKE WHEN DESIGNING OR RENOVATING?
A: Having a realistic budget.
Q: HOW DO YOU BALANCE AESTHETICS WITH FUNCTIONALITY?
A: If a space doesn’t function well, it won’t ever feel beautiful. I design with real life in mind first, then make sure every choice supports both usability and aesthetics.
Q: WHAT ARE YOUR FAVORITE MATERIALS OR PRODUCTS TO WORK WITH, AND WHY ?
A: I love working with natural materials—stone, wood, linen—because they bring warmth and depth that can’t be faked. They wear beautifully over time and help spaces feel lived-in, not overdesigned.

MONICA HART INTERIOR DESIGN MONICA HART ABOUT MONICA HART
INTERIOR DESIGN
"I grew up in the cozy little town of Karlstad, MN. I graduated from North Dakota State University in 1997 with a degree in Interior Design. My first job out of college was at the NDSU Alumni Association (Go Bison!). My internship and first design job were at Ste. Marie Design, a hospitality firm, where I learned and practiced commercial and hospitality design until the firm closed its Fargo branch in 2002. I found employment with a builder and then a design center, where I discovered a love of residential design and new construction.
During these years, I passed the NCIDQ exam to become a certified interior designer. These various positions gave me the experience needed to realize my dream of owning my own business! I think, for any parent, balancing work and home life is a difficult juggling act. While I love being an interior designer, I love being a mom even more. Owning my own business gives me the flexibility to balance (or juggle) both! I am a volunteer for various organizations.
I am also a board member of the Building Industry Association, a member of the Fargo Moorhead West Fargo Chamber, North Dakota Interior Designers, and serve on the Parade of Homes Committee at the Building Industry Association. Outside of work and volunteer activities, I love being with my family. My husband, Phil, and our three sons are my great crew of boys! Our oldest, Griffin, lives and works in St. Paul, MN. Our middle, Marcus, is a senior at the Peabody Institute of Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore. Our youngest, Henry, is a junior at Davies High School. When I am not working or volunteering, I enjoy attending my sons' activities, visiting with friends, playing with my two cats (Olive and Pepper), and experiencing a trip or two each year. Life is busy, and I love it that way!"

FEATURED PROJECT:
TOP SHELF TAVERN
I did the interior design on Top Shelf Tavern located at 2920 Sheyenne St, Suite 120 in West Fargo. The concept was a warm and friendly atmosphere that felt collected and like it’s been there a while. Wood paneling with acoustics were used to differentiate areas while providing help with sound control. Vinyl wallcovering that looks like stitched leather adds a warm masculine touch. Thin brick adds texture and a feeling that this tavern has been around a while. This project was completed in April of 2023.
DESIGNER Q&A
Q: HOW DID YOU GET STARTED IN INTERIOR DESIGN?
A: That is what my degree is in. I interned for a hospitality firm while I was in college, and that was also my first design job out of college.
Q: WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO BECOME A DESIGNER?
A: I always enjoyed moving furniture around to make the most sense of the room size and traffic flow. I also liked to make things look nice together. I was happy to realize there was a degree for this!
Q: WHERE DID YOU TRAIN OR STUDY DESIGN?
A: I have a 4-year degree in Interior Design from North Dakota State University, and I am also NCIDQ-certified.
Q: HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOUR DESIGN STYLE?
A: My personal design style is modern, a little masculine, and clean. As far as my residential clients go, I don’t have a design style. I want their home to be a reflection of them—not me.
Q: WHAT MAKES YOUR APPROACH OR AESTHETIC UNIQUE?
A: The fact that I tailor every design to each individual client. What is most important to them? What are their favorite colors? What special needs may they have unique to their family that I have to be aware of?
Q: WHAT KINDS OF PROJECTS DO YOU MOST ENJOY WORKING ON?
A: I especially enjoy remodels—there is nothing better than a good before and after! Especially when I’ve made a space function better.
Q: HOW HAS YOUR STYLE EVOLVED OVER THE YEARS?
A: My personal style hasn’t really changed, nor has my philosophy for my client projects, which is that the finished product should be a reflection of my client, not me.
Q: WHAT DO YOU WISH CLIENTS UNDERSTOOD BETTER ABOUT INTERIOR DESIGN?
A: Interior design isn’t about matching colors or decorating. It is space planning, function, safety, and aesthetics come after that.
Q: WHAT DESIGN TRENDS ARE YOU SEEING MOST OFTEN IN THE FM AREA RIGHT NOW?
A: Lots of white and beige, light wood tones, warmth coming back into spaces (which is great!).
Q: WHAT PROJECT ARE YOU MOST PROUD OF—AND WHY?
A: I have so many I am proud of and for different reasons. I have helped widows as they are starting a new chapter. I have helped clients with homes that had to be tailored to them for medical needs. I have worked on custom homes with clients for 12-18 months, where we met weekly and formed a bond and friendship that is so special. I am so fortunate to have so many wonderful experiences!
Q: WHAT’S ONE PIECE OF ADVICE YOU ALWAYS GIVE YOUR CLIENTS?
A: To not worry about trends. Trends come and go and will appear dated quickly. I encourage them to stay true to what they like and feel most comfortable with.
Q: WHAT COMMON MISTAKES DO HOMEOWNERS MAKE WHEN DESIGNING OR RENOVATING?
A: Not hiring a professional! It is a small investment to hire someone compared to costly mistakes and regrets. One of the worst things I hear is when someone builds a home and then has regrets in certain areas, and it can’t be changed.
Q: HOW DO YOU BALANCE AESTHETICS WITH FUNCTIONALITY?
A: I use the guiding interior design motto, “Form follows function”. Function ALWAYS comes first. I can make anything look great once the function is thought through and in place.
Q: WHAT ARE YOUR FAVORITE MATERIALS OR PRODUCTS TO WORK WITH, AND WHY?
A: I like to use commercial upholstery on residential furniture pieces. People have young kids, grandkids, dogs, cats, teenagers, etc, and I don’t want my clients worrying about life happening in their homes.
Q: HOW DO YOU APPROACH LIGHTING, COLOR, AND SPACE PLANNING?
A: I talk at length with my clients about their lifestyle, project goals, examples of homes they like, favorite colors, etc… and go from there. Space planning comes first, and the selections naturally fall into place after that.
Q: HOW DO YOU CHOOSE TRADE PARTNERS AND SUPPLIERS?
A: It is especially important to me to work with partners who have quality products, do quality work, and have excellent customer service.
Q: WHAT BOOKS, WEBSITES, OR MAGAZINES DO YOU RECOMMEND FOR DESIGN LOVERS?
A: I love Houzz!
Q: WHAT'S YOUR FAVORITE ROOM TO DESIGN, AND WHY?
A: Probably a family/great room where people spend the most time and make everyday memories.
Q: WHAT'S YOUR FAVORITE COLOR PALETTE RIGHT NOW?
A: I always love a mix of warm and cool—browns, charcoal gray, cream, and navy is a favorite palette. That’s what I have in my own house!
Q: WHAT'S THE WORST DESIGN MYTH YOU WANT TO RETIRE FOREVER?
A: That there are “rules”. Design is fluid.

DAKOTA MAGIC HOTEL REFRESH
Full room and corridor remodel at Dakota Magic Casino and Hotel
This project remimagines the hotel's guest rooms and corridors to create a cohesive, modern environment that prioritizes warmth, comfort, and a refined sense of luxury. The remodel balances contemporary design with inviting materials and thoughtful native inspired details, ensuring guests feel relaxed, welcome, and at ease from the moment they check in.
Guest Room Design Concept
The redesigned guest rooms emphasize comfortdriven modernity through a warm, layered palette and clean architectural lines. Soft neutral tones are complemented by rich wood finishes and textured fabrics to create a calming and approachable atmosphere. Upholstered furnishings, plush bedding, and ergonomic seating enhance both relaxation and functionality.
Modern lighting solutions are integral to the design, combining ambient, task, and accent lighting to allow guests to customize their experience. Warm LED lighting highlights architectural features and material textures while maintaining energy efficiency. Integrated technology—such as intuitive controls, discreet charging solutions, and streamlined casework—supports a contemporary guest lifestyle without visual clutter.
The bathroom design continues the modern aesthetic with clean lines, durable finishes, and warm accent materials that elevate the space while remaining practical for high-traffic hospitality use.
Corridor Design Concept
The corridors are designed as an extension of the guest room experience, transitioning guests smoothly through the hotel with a sense of warmth and continuity. A native inspired color palette paired with textured wall coverings and wood or wood-inspired accents adds visual depth and reduces the institutional feel often associated with hotel corridors.
Layered lighting creates a welcoming ambiance while improving wayfinding and safety. Subtle design elements, such as custom wall details and thoughtfully placed accent lighting, add character and rhythm to the hallway experience. Durable, acoustically mindful carpet flooring enhances comfort while supporting long-term maintenance and performance.
Overall Design Intent
The overall remodel establishes a unified design language that feels modern yet approachable. By blending warm materials, comfortable furnishings, and contemporary detailing, the project enhances guest satisfaction while supporting operational efficiency. The result is a hotel environment that feels elevated, relaxing, and memorable— offering guests a modern retreat grounded in comfort and warmth.
DESIGNER Q&A
Q: HOW DID YOU GET STARTED IN INTERIOR DESIGN?
A: In 2001, I was working at a historic boutique hotel in Minneapolis. At the time, the hotel was in desperate need of a refresh, and I would daydream about redesigning the rooms. This was the first time I can remember that I thought "I would love to do that job for the rest of my life.
Q: WHERE DID YOU TRAIN OR STUDY DESIGN?
A: I received my Bachelor's degree in Interior Design from the Art Institutes InternationalMinneapolis in 2007.
Q: HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOUR DESIGN STYLE?
A: I’m a self-proclaimed maximalist, unapologetically drawn to bold interiors that celebrate color, pattern, and abundance.
Q: WHAT MAKES YOUR APPROACH OR AESTHETIC UNIQUE?
A: My design aesthetic is uniquely my own because I create from intuition rather than inspiration images, letting instinct and imagination lead every choice.
Q: WHAT KINDS OF PROJECTS DO YOU MOST ENJOY WORKING ON?
A: I love designing hospitality projects because they’re the ultimate playground for maximalism—spaces where I can layer color, texture, pattern, and storytelling into immersive environments that feel larger than life. Hospitality lets me build entire worlds, crafting experiences so vivid and expressive that guests don’t just visit them—they feel them.
Q: HOW HAS YOUR STYLE EVOLVED OVER THE YEARS?
A: My design style has evolved into something far more experimental and boundary-pushing over the years. I’ve become increasingly drawn to non-conventional materials—unexpected textures, repurposed objects, and elements that aren’t traditionally considered “design materials” at all. That shift opened the door to a more avant-garde approach, where I’m less interested in following established rules and more excited about creating work that feels original, sculptural, and a little rebellious. My process now is about invention, not imitation, and that freedom has completely reshaped the way I build spaces.
Q: WHAT DO YOU WISH CLIENTS UNDERSTOOD BETTER ABOUT INTERIOR DESIGN?
A: It's important for clients to remember that meaningful design doesn’t happen overnight. Every detail—every material, every proportion, every decision—takes time, intention, and a lot of behind-the-scenes work.
Q: WHAT DESIGN TRENDS ARE YOU SEEING MOST OFTEN IN THE FM AREA RIGHT NOW?
A: In the Fargo–Moorhead area, modern farmhouse is still the dominant trend—but I believe it’s time for people to move on from it. There’s so much more personality, color, and creativity waiting beyond shiplap. I love seeing homeowners who are starting to explore styles that feel more unique to them.
Q: WHAT PROJECT ARE YOU MOST PROUD OF, AND WHY?
A: I’m most proud of all my projects because each one is completely unique. Every space has its own personality, its own challenges, and its own story to tell—and I love the individuality that emerges when I design without repeating myself.
Q: WHAT’S ONE PIECE OF ADVICE YOU ALWAYS GIVE YOUR CLIENTS?
A: It’s completely okay to be different. There’s no single mold that fits everyone’s lifestyle, and the best spaces are the ones that reflect who you are, not what’s trending.
Q: WHAT COMMON MISTAKES DO HOMEOWNERS MAKE WHEN DESIGNING OR RENOVATING?
A: One of the biggest mistakes homeowners make when remodeling is not hiring a designer. DIY projects may seem cost-effective at first, but they often lead to expensive fixes, overlooked details, and choices that don’t work together in the long run. A designer brings strategy, cohesion, and expertise—saving time, money, and stress.
Q: HOW DO YOU BALANCE AESTHETICS WITH FUNCTIONALITY?
A: I balance functionality with aesthetics by really getting to know my client—how they live, what they value, and what makes them feel at home. When I understand their rhythms and personality, I can design a space that not only looks beautiful but genuinely supports their lifestyle.
Q: WHAT ARE YOUR FAVORITE MATERIALS OR PRODUCTS TO WORK WITH, AND WHY?
A: My favorite materials and products to work with are always the unconventional ones; colorful, textural elements that bring a space to life. I’m drawn to anything unexpected, anything with personality, and anything that adds depth, vibrancy, and a little bit of drama.
Q: HOW DO YOU APPROACH LIGHTING, COLOR, AND SPACE PLANNING?
A: I approach color, lighting, and space planning with the same philosophy: more expression, more emotion, more impact. Color is my storytelling tool—I layer bold hues and unexpected combinations to create depth and personality. Lighting becomes the mood-setter, shifting from dramatic to intimate to highlight textures, art, and the energy of the room. And space planning is where it all comes together; I don’t shy away from filling a room with pieces that spark joy, curiosity, and conversation. Every choice is about creating a space that feels alive, immersive, and unapologetically full.
Q: HOW DO YOU CHOOSE TRADE PARTNERS AND SUPPLIERS?
A: I choose trade partners and suppliers based on long-standing relationships with people I’ve grown to trust. Over time, you learn who delivers quality, who communicates well, and who treats every project with the same care you do—and those are the collaborators I return to again and again.
Q: WHAT’S ONE TREND YOU THINK WILL DOMINATE IN THE NEXT 2–5 YEARS?
A: Maximalism is the design trend I see dominating in the coming years. People are moving away from the ‘keeping up with the Joneses’ mindset and embracing spaces that feel personal, expressive, and full of color and warmth. Individuality is becoming the new luxury, and homes are shifting toward bolder, richer, more character-driven design.
Q: WHAT'S YOUR FAVORITE ROOM TO DESIGN, AND WHY?
A: Surprisingly, my favorite rooms to design are bathrooms/restrooms (in both residential and commercial applications) because people are often more willing to experiment in a smaller space. It’s a place where bold ideas, playful materials, and unexpected color can shine—and because it’s easier to update over time, clients feel freer to take risks and have fun with the design.
Q: WHAT'S YOUR FAVORITE COLOR PALETTE RIGHT NOW?
A: My favorite color palette right now is mid-century inspired with a bit of a modern twist. Rich jewel tones, saturated oranges, deep teals, bold chartreuse, and warm woods layered with energetic pattern and texture.
Q: WHAT'S THE WORST DESIGN MYTH YOU WANT TO RETIRE FOREVER?
A: The design myth that I want to retire forever is the idea that hiring a designer is ‘too expensive.’ In reality, designers do things right the first time—saving clients from costly mistakes, wasted materials, and endless do-overs. Good design is an investment, not an added expense.
Landon's Light Outdoor Volleyball
On a warm September night in West Fargo, something rare happened.
It wasn’t just a volleyball match. It wasn’t even just eight high school teams sharing a court under stadium lights.
It was electricity. It was memory. It was grief turned into purpose, and sport elevated into something bigger than competition.
And for a few unforgettable hours, an outdoor plaza became the heart of an entire community.
Landon's Light Foundation Board Member Ryan Kill was at home watching a college volleyball match on television. Nebraska was playing Nebraska-Omaha inside Memorial Stadium, the football cathedral usually reserved for 90,000 screaming fans on Saturdays. That night, it was volleyball. Under the lights. On ESPN. Over 92,000 people in attendance.
“It was absolutely incredible,” Kill said. “The scene, the spectacle of it—you could feel it through the screen.”
Over the next year and a half, Ryan brought it up in conversations with other volleyball parents. Dads of West Fargo Sheyenne volleyball players, team coaches, and school administrators. Each time, the same reaction followed.
"That would be incredible. Someone should do that. That would never work."
Until one winter conversation flipped the switch back on.
“You really need to keep pushing on that outdoor game again,” another Sheyenne dad told him. “That’s something we need to do.”
This time, Kill listened to the nudge instead of letting it fade.
Once school leadership and the high school association were on board, Kill knew exactly where the idea belonged next.
Landon’s Light.
As a board member of the foundation, he saw immediately how the event could become more than a spectacle. The graduating seniors were Landon’s classmates. The timing felt right. The meaning ran deeper than volleyball ever could on its own.
“It just felt like everything was coming together,” he said.
When the idea reached Executive Director Julie Christianson and Operations Coordinator Cherish Hoffman, it didn’t take long before it became real.
Very real.
On July 22, a check was written for a volleyball court.
"That was the moment when everything shifted," Christianson said. “That’s when it became real.”
They had six to eight weeks to pull off something that had never been done locally at this scale. From July 22 to September 7—when crews began prepping lights and subfloor—their world became volleyball, logistics, partners, permits, and faith.
A lot of faith.
An outdoor volleyball court is not an outdoor volleyball court.
It’s an indoor sport surface—portable, precise, and expensive—placed at the mercy of weather, wind, sun, and timing. The court alone cost just over $80,000, an expense that could not fall on a nonprofit whose mission is to serve medically fragile children and their families.
So the community stepped in.
Deck Masters arrived as a partner— guiding everything from surface preparation to long-term care. TRS Industries produced a massive custom tarp to protect the court from the elements. West Fargo Events, West Fargo Parks, West Fargo Public Schools, Gateway Chevrolet, State Farm - Ryan Kill Agency and HUB - Nick Killoran Great Plains Region aligned behind the vision.
“Everybody believed in it once you explained what it could be,” Christianson said.
And then there were the details— the kind that turn an event into an experience.
Starting lineups weren’t announced from the sidelines. Athletes began on a stage, walking down a runway toward the court as their names echoed through the venue. Music filled the plaza. Each player received a custom t-shirt in their school colors and an official athlete badge—something tangible to remember the day.
“It was about making these girls feel like what they were doing mattered,” Christianson said. “Because it did.”
Even the weather cooperated.
They didn’t check the forecast—not intentionally.
“It was the one thing we couldn’t control,” Christianson admitted. “So we didn’t look.”
When they finally did, days before the event, it was perfect. And it stayed perfect.
“The weather was the MVP,” she said. “Unreal.”
By the second match of the day, something unexpected happened.
As athletes ran down the runway toward the court, fans instinctively stood closer. Then closer still. Kids lined the sides, arms outstretched, forming a tunnel. By the final match, the pathway had become a full-on runway—young fans on both sides, cheering, reaching, welcoming the athletes like professionals stepping onto a championship stage.
“It just evolved,” Kill said. “People wanted to be part of it.”
By nightfall, children sat cross-legged just inches from the court. Apartment balconies overlooking the plaza filled with spectators. One resident emailed Landon’s Light during the event.
"I’m watching from my balcony. This is unreal. Please do this every year."
They had already exceeded attendance expectations. Roughly 2,500 people flowed through the event over the course of the day. About 1,300 spectators packed in for the final match alone— before accounting for those watching from balconies or tuning in on WDAY Extra and WDAY Plus.
But the most powerful moments didn’t come from the crowd size. They came from the pauses.
About Landon's Light Foundation
Landon’s Light Foundation was created to honor Landon’s life by bringing hope, support, and light to families facing unthinkable loss and hardship. Rooted in compassion and community, the foundation exists to remind people that they are not alone—especially in their darkest moments. Through acts of generosity, advocacy, and meaningful outreach, Landon’s Light Foundation turns grief into purpose, helping others find strength, comfort, and healing while carrying Landon’s light forward.
From the outside, the event looked like an ambitious sports production: eight schools, outdoor court, lights, music, crowd.
But for Landon’s Light, the goal was never to create a viral spectacle. It was to create an experience that carried their mission without turning the day into a fundraiser pitch.
The gate was intentionally simple and accessible: $15 minimum donation for adults, $5 for students. Families could come without feeling priced out. Nobody was asked to raise a paddle. Nobody was cornered into giving.
And yet people gave anyway.
“We got people giving us $100 on a $60 entrance for a family and saying, ‘Keep the change,’” Julie said.
The money mattered—because the mission requires resources— but Julie kept circling back to the same point: the heart of the day was belonging.
“This wasn’t about ‘Donate to Landon’s Light,’” she said. “It was about bringing the community together around something bigger than a sport.”
Between the intensity of the matches—three of the four games were conference matchups, meaning rankings and pride were on the line—the organizers introduced an element that shifted the focus from who won to who led.
Every coach was asked to nominate one athlete for a Landon Light Leadership Award—a recognition rooted in the qualities Landon embodied: integrity, respect, sportsmanship, friendship, teamwork.
“It wasn’t just about being a good volleyball player,” Christianson said. “It was about being a good teammate and being a good friend—and living like Landon lived each and every day.”
At the end of each game, a nominated player was featured and honored.
For younger athletes watching—especially the kids who will move through these programs in the coming years—it created a different kind of aspiration. A different definition of success. A reminder that leadership is something you choose, moment by moment, in public and in private.
When it was over—when the lights went down, and the court was covered, and the last fans drifted out—Christianson expected relief.
Instead, she felt something else.
“I’m still on a high from it,” she said. “I still feel like I’m on a high.”
Then she gave it a name: “A heartfelt hangover.”
Because the emotion didn’t vanish when the final point was scored. It lingered. It echoed. It followed people home.
The foundation even posted a recap video afterward—a quick slice of the day that captured what athletes were saying and how it felt to be part of something “bigger than volleyball.”
And what kept coming through, over and over, was this:
People didn’t just attend. They belonged.
Yes, the event was financially successful.
While a few invoices were still outstanding at the time of the interview, Julie confirmed the foundation would come out ahead— by more than anticipated. Those funds will go directly back into Landon’s Light’s mission, helping serve more children and families when they need it most.
But Julie was careful to draw the line between profit and purpose.
“This wasn’t a gala,” she said. “We didn’t raise a paddle. We didn’t ask people to donate.”
The only ask was entry. The rest was trust.
People gave because they understood what they were part of. Because they had seen the stories. Because they had felt the night.
That’s the kind of support that lasts beyond a single event—into Giving Hearts Day, year-end donations, future sponsorships, and word-of-mouth belief.
Not because they were asked.
Because they remembered.

When Niece’s Pieces and Designs applied for our 16th Annual Unglued Craft Fest, we were enamored with her process and unique use of stones found in the Lake Agassiz lakebed! So we were very excited to get to know more about Shanice and her process this month’s Meet the maker! You’ll be able to catch her at the Fest, March 6-7, at West Acres Mall and see her work yourself!
Tell us a bit about yourself. I was born in Minneapolis, raised in Fargo, and bumbled about for a bit in between Fargo and finally landed in the small town of Hawley, MN. I love traveling and have travelled across the Midwest, West Coast, a bit down south, have lived in Alaska, and plan to start venturing out East this summer! Camping is something I have always enjoyed as well. My children and I do our best to stay outside as much as we can every summer, camping, hiking, kayaking, climbing rocks, all of it! I enjoy most anything I can do with my hands—any form of creation from woodworking, sewing, metal bending, silversmithing, painting, and the list goes on! I have been running my business for about seven years, full-time for about five years.
Describe what type of products and craft work you do under Niece's Pieces and Designs. I do all sorts of different crafts here. My main artform, and where I started, was with wirewrapped jewelry. I also have wood-burnt boxes that I make. I do use a CNC machine to engrave the basic design onto each box, then after I finish
up with that, I will add all of the details and backgrounds with a hand burner, making each piece unique. I have a handful of boxes that I burn completely by hand, often capturing very scenic views, capturing my love for camping. I have also recently picked up some silver smithing as well as making rings out of old spoons and forks.
Tell us how you got started with your handcrafted business. What inspired you?
I had started my business while living out of a camper and traveling from Minnesota out to the West Coast with my family. We were stopped at a music festival called Sawtooth Valley Gathering out in Idaho. I had met a gentleman who was selling rocks and doing wire wraps. At the time, I had been doing some macramé work, making necklaces as well. After chatting for the weekend, we decided to sit down and trade skills, spending a day sitting at the festival grounds showing each other what we knew. After leaving, he sent me off with a bag of stones, and I would collect doorbell wire and strip the wires to use for my jewelry. I have since switched to different wires and cabochons, but have held true to the basic frames, as well as picking up a handful of other wire weaving techniques. I did use wire weaving to start the business and have been forming it into my different crafts throughout the years. I have done woodworking, wood burning, painting, and soon will also be adding some drawing into the mix!
What was one of the most difficult pieces you've created?
I would say that the most difficult pieces I have made were coasters. I had had a tree fall into my house and decided that instead of just burning the tree, I decided I would turn it into coasters! I would cut each coaster with a chop saw, dry them out (using various methods, always trying to find the most efficient), then I would engrave and/or hand-burn each coaster before coating it with epoxy. After that, I would have to trim any excess epoxy and sand down each of the edges by hand. The process for each coaster would be between one and two weeks. Each piece that came out successfully felt like its own little achievement; however, this is something I do not think I would ever care to do again!
Where does your inspo come from for new pieces?
A lot of my quotes on my boxes are found in poetry, books, and, of course, social media. I am greatly influenced by nature, the importance of standing still, and becoming the best version of ourselves that we can be. Anything positive or affirming, places that make me feel small, scenes that feel larger than life as well as my favorite camping spots under the stars. I find myself inspired most when I am traveling to new places and hoping to capture the energy I find there.
Tell us more about mining your local crystals and rocks! Anything that someone would find surprising?
I have been incredibly lucky to be able to find these Duckbill Selenite! They are a stone that is found in the Lake Agassiz lakebed. They have been found from Fargo up to Winnipeg and even over into Minnesota! These specimens are found between 14-20 feet underground in and around sand pits. Selenite is a form of gypsum, which is a mineral found in anything from drywall to toothpaste! These duckbill selenite formed when the gypsum had gotten wet and then dried, the moisture in the gypsum was slowly pulled from the stone mineral, crystallizing it and creating the duckbill. There are also other formations called desert roses that are formed similarly and found all over the world, those are created with sand in them as well as gypsum.
What has been the most challenging part of this handcrafted business?
I feel as though I have been super fortunate in my business ventures. Creating a space that I love to exist in and making my inventory has been one of the most rewarding things I have done in this life, next to raising my two children. Finding spaces that fit with my values and beliefs, and creating handmade pieces, has been something I have been working towards for many years now. Paperwork will always be the ultimate rival. I can never seem to stay nearly as organized as I should be!
What has been the most rewarding part?
I believe the most rewarding part has been that I have been able to provide for my family as well as stay home and be here with my children as they move through school. I have loved watching not only my business grow, but my kids being able to experience
entrepreneurship as well as add into my business in their own ways and giving them a creative outlet. The feeling of fulfillment is ever-present when running your own business, even if it is close to the tension of success. Making it through each trying time becomes a source of not just pride, but true selfworth. I do not think that I would be able to find this level of accomplishment in many other careers out there, at least not the ones that I have tried!
What advice would you have given yourself five years ago?
Five years ago, I would have chosen to take the leap, take the chances, and do the things that I knew would bring me joy. I'm grateful that I was able to convince myself to take the chance; it did take a lot of time to convince myself to do so. I am grateful for where I get to be now and am not sure what it would be that I would change, but I would have given myself more reassurance that it was going to be okay. Let me know that it will be one of the most rewarding things I could have done for myself.
You'll have a booth at our 16th Annual Unglued Craft Fest! Tell us what people will find from you at this event, March 6-7?
At the unglued event on March 6-7, you will be able to find some of my wirewrapped pendants, wood-burnt boxes, as well as some of those wonderful duckbill selenite! I will also be bringing what is left of those pain-in-the-butt coasters! I am down to the last 60 or so that I will make.
Where can people find your work or connect with you?
I do have a website that you can find both my wire wraps as well as any of my zodiac boxes! I do also have an option for making both custom boxes and pendants! On my website, you will also be able to find a calendar with all of my events and where I will be every weekend! I travel the entire Midwest, but on my website, you will see where you are able to pick up your own piece of Duckbill Selenite!

TIPS FOR FUNCTIONAL, PERSONAL, AND LOCAL LIVING

hen we think about home upgrades, it is easy to fixate on the big decisions. Countertop materials, paint finishes, and furniture meant to last often take center stage. Somewhere between choosing swatches and scrolling through inspiration photos, we forget to consider how we actually live in our spaces. The daily flow of our lives, including habits, routines, and systems we rely on are just as integral to thoughtful design as the upgrades themselves.
Upgrading your home does not always require a full renovation or the pursuit of trends. I finally felt settled in my own home once I began designing it around my routines and rituals rather than how I thought a home was supposed
DESIGN AROUND EVERYDAY RITUALS
to look. The balance of aesthetics and function became clearer when I surrounded myself with objects that held meaning. Pieces tied to memory or sourced from local makers bring a sense of depth that cannot be replicated by massproduced decor. Shopping locally slows the decision-making process and encourages fewer, better choices rather than filling a cart quickly. Some of my favorite onestop destinations include the Red River Market, Brewhalla, West Acres Mall, and First Avenue Market, all places that make it easy to support local makers and artists while finding pieces that feel personal.
Here are five ways I like to add personal and functional touches to my home while supporting local businesses along the way.
If you use something daily, why hide it away after every use? For me, that ritual is tea. My red kettle lives on the stovetop because making tea is a part of my daily routine. The experience feels even more intentional when paired with locally made blends from Steep Me Tea or Chai Moto, both Fargo-based businesses with storefronts where you can grab a drink or stock up for home. I also like to leave my honey on the countertop, and Three Bears Honey Co., locally and organically made, is my go-to. Having these items visible and within reach makes everyday rituals feel easier, intentional, and more meaningful.

A FRIDGE IS A MOODBOARD
I used to fight the urge to keep my fridge perfectly clean and orderly. Over time, I realized I use it more as a moodboard than the whiteboard in my office. It holds love notes, artwork from the little ones in my life, bucket lists of things I want to accomplish, and magnets collected from artists, garage sales, and travels. It is unrealistic to always have a home that is photograph-ready, but a home should support the goals you set for yourself. Small mementos and reminders on the fridge bring personality into the kitchen and make the space feel lived in rather than styled. One of my favorite additions is a collection of colorful magnets by Jenny Sue, a local artist whose playful designs and Nordic-inspired phrases remind me of home. Her work can be found in the Aptitude Artist Studios in West Acres Mall, which are open to the public on weekends. You can also find her work at Unglued, located in Brewhalla.

LEAN INTO YOUR UNEXPECTED HABITS
I design my home around how I actually behave, not how I think I should. Catch all bowls and trays live throughout my space because without them, I would lose my keys daily, and honestly, I still do, but less often. Designated drop zones work better for me than drawers because they remove extra steps. I am also more likely to follow through on my goals when my environment makes them easy. My yoga mat lives under the couch because I am far more inclined to use it there than if it were tucked away in the basement. When something repeatedly ends up on a surface, that surface is offering useful information. Giving it a permanent home there is not laziness, it is a way of eliminating friction. One of my favorite examples is a handmade catch tray I created in a class with Rising Dawn Ceramics, which holds everyday essentials while also carrying the memory of making it alongside my partner. You can purchase her ceramics at her downtown Fargo studio or take a class and create your own piece.

ASSISTED PLANT LIVING
I love having plants, but I am not always the most consistent caretaker. The right tools make all the difference. Copper Root Nursery and The Plant Supply both offer plant care essentials that simplify maintenance rather than complicate it. Copper Root Nursery curates soil mixes designed for specific plans and The Plant Supply has fertilizer drops you can add to your watering routine. These small supports have been lifesavers for my greenery and make plant care feel approachable instead of intimidating.

ELEVATE YOUR EVERYDAY ESSENTIALS
Functional items don’t have to be boring. Too much branding creates visual noise in my space, so I look for pieces that feel intentional and understated. Swapping mass-produced products for handcrafted ones can instantly elevate a room. In my bathroom, locally made soap from Billie’s Soap replaces generic bottles, adding texture, color, and intention to an everyday routine. Another favorite is candles from Studio FSR. The maker is also a professional musician, and each candle includes a link to music composed to pair with its scent. The branding is minimal, something I value in my home, and the experience enhances both the atmosphere and sound of a space. These candles can be found at Unglued in Brewhalla. Small swaps like these create a sense of quiet luxury where usefulness and beauty exist together.
Many of the pieces that make my home feel complete found their way to me through shopping locally at the Red River Market, Brewhalla, First Avenue Market, and West Acres Mall. Shopping locally has allowed me to curate a space that feels personal, functional, and connected to my community. These makers and small businesses do not just sell products; they bring stories, intention, and craftsmanship into everyday life. A home should evolve with you. As routines shift through different chapters of life, our spaces can be adjusted to reduce friction, support our goals, and keep us connected to the community around us. While Brewhalla, First Avenue Market, and West Acres Mall are year-round destinations, the Red River Market also hosts winter and spring markets, making it possible to support local makers well beyond the summer season.
