GREATER NEWS

A MINISTRY OF GEAT SUNDAY SCHOOL

Greetings Sunday Schoolers!

The Spring Quarter Topic: God's Perfect Plan!

God has a perfect plan for every life he creates. A perfect plan that is uniquely tailored to each individual. However, we all have one thing in common as it relates to CHRIST.

JESUS CHRIST died for all of us; yes, for the sins of the whole world. In support of this truth, CHRIST is not willing that any should perish but that ALL should come to repentance (2. Peter 3:9).

As Sunday Schoolers, let's make listening an act of WORSHIP. Isaiah 55:3 tells us to “Incline your ear, and come to Me: hear, and your soul shall live;”

JESUS is God's ONLY provision for sin. As Christians, we must be on high alert, and ready to give a defense to everyone who asks you a reason for the HOPE that is in you (1. Peter 3:15).

God Bless ALL of you in Jesus' name!

Much Love in Jesus' Name!

Mentoring & Mining: Challenges We Face Today!

Sister Ashley Brewster, GEAT Young People President shared this interesting Facebook post written by a Leading Pastor named Nirup Alphonse:

Conversations of a Youth Pastor with a Parent:

Youth Pastor: "Yeah absolutely. We’d love to partner with you in disciplining your kids in what it means to love and follow Jesus. We meet every Sunday at church at 9 am and then we have Sunday school later. We will get them connected with a youth leader who walks with them and once a month we have a gathering for students with some mid-week discipleship things.

Parent: "Oh wow. That’s a lot. Let me figure this out."

Conversations of a Coach or Theater Director with a Parent:

Sports Coach/ Theater Director: Your kid shows remarkable talent. We’d like to help you. We meet every day for 2 hours and they can’t be late. Also, we need you to invest thousands of dollars on practice, coaching, and equipment because the cost of “making it” isn’t cheap. Also, we have practice every night for 9 months and 64 games this season all day Saturday and Sunday. Your entire family will need to orient your life around this.

Parent: "Wonderful. We will be there. Won’t miss it."

Conclusion:

Note to Parents - "Your kids are being disciplined one way or another. You get to decide. You have them on borrowed time and they aren’t “yours.” They have been gifted to you and you will have to give an account, not for what they chose, but for what you did.

(Sister Carol Wade) - While on my way to church today around 10:30 a.m., I passed a recreational center and saw what looked like a hundred or more cars in the parking lot. I thought, "What is going on here?" I looked over and saw just as many if not more children and adults preparing to either play or watch multiple soccer games. It appeared that a tournament was going on. It made me think about the Facebook post shared by Sister Ashley Brewster; “Conversations of a Youth Pastor with a Parent and Conversations of a Coach or Theater Director with a Parent.” The post also made me wonder if there were intentional behaviors that parents or grandparents needed to demonstrate to get children to continue to participate in church as they grow older. So, I asked two of these parents, Sister Renee Brewster and Sister Viola Kitchen, whose children attend and actively participate in church now if they could provide just a couple of tips that they used to help their children stay connected to God and church. Below are just a few comments they shared. This is not intended to be an exhaustive or comprehensive list. It is just a few suggestions that other parents/grandparents might consider if they are looking for suggestions. Both of these parents gave all the glory to God; both of them had Mothers who were active in the church, and neither of them let the children choose whether they wanted to go to church.

Sis. Viola Kitchen:

1. I conveyed that Church involvement was important for spiritual growth and fellowship (not just in words but in my actions). It provides an opportunity to learn more about God and be a part of a community of like-minded believers. For example, one way I did that was to ensure that for every outside activity, they had to participate in a church activity. Or, if they missed a Sunday, they had to identify how they would make it up during the week. Unfortunately, for some of our young people church involvement sometimes takes a back seat to academic and extracurricular activities. As parents, there are several things we can do to foster a balance in our children’s lives.

2. We can build a spiritual foundation by setting a positive example. Being a positive role model in our children’s lives is one of the most impactful ways to guide and nurture our children towards a spiritual balance. (We must live what we say.)

3. Another thing we can do is allow our children to see how we as parents prioritize family, work, and our spiritual lives. This may mean sacrificing some (of my own) activities to attend church activities. We must be flexible, and willing to adjust our plans if necessary to accommodate church activities.

4. It is also important to be organized. It is helpful to keep track of church, school, and extracurricular activities to make sure that everything is balanced.

5. Finally but most importantly, we must be a source of unwavering support and love throughout our children’s journey.

Sis. Renee Brewster:

Here are a few things I did that I believe contributed to Ashley still being in the church and serving the Lord. First of all, I have to say all glory goes to God. I am also grateful for my mother. It is her teachings and rearing me in the church that have helped me to be the woman I am today. I am so appreciative that Ashley has remained in the church and did not rebel.

1. I anointed and prayed over Ashley every morning before I left for work from pre-school until she graduated high school. Most of the time she was asleep but she remembered me coming into her room and praying for her.

2. I tried to make sure she had a balance between school, extracurricular activities, and church. I just didn’t drop her off at the young people's services and leave but I attended with her. Although we did not attend every service, not going to church was not an option. Ashley knew she was going to church unless she was sick or we were on vacation. I never presented church as a chore but that it was an honor to serve the Lord and that we really cannot live without him.

3. Ashley has expressed that she never felt neglected by me as her mother because I was consistently present and attentive at home. She also mentioned that I didn’t prioritize church activities over my role as her mother, often including her in activities that I felt were suitable for her. Ashley noted that her father and I demonstrated a good balance between parenthood, careers, and our faith/church commitments.

Balancing church involvement with academics and extracurricular activities can be challenging but, it is possible and worth it.

How to make easy pear sorbet

• Step one, forget about your beautiful pears, and let them ripen too long. Expect to see brown spots, a soft delicate peel, and shriveling around the stem. The riper the sweeter. Just don’t let them start fermenting.

• Step two, core and chop the overripe pears. Freeze them until solid.

• Step three, transfer the frozen pears to a food processor. Add cinnamon and a tbsp of maple syrup. Blend until smooth and creamy. *Flavor the pear sorbet however you’d like. Other great additions are vanilla bean, ginger, cardamom, and/or nutmeg.

• Step four, serve immediately or place the sorbet in the freezer to firm for an hour. Enjoy!

April 2024

Jesus is God

Unit 2 - Confirmed by Mighty Miracles

April 7, 2024: LESSON 6: Jesus’ First Miracle; John 2:1-12

Teacher: Deaconess Melanie Moon

This week’s lesson focuses on Jesus’ first miracle in Cana, The Wedding. Jesus’ miracles were signs pointing to His deity. The purpose of the signs or miracles were to (1) manifest His (Jesus) glory and (2) so that His disciples would believe. As we read and study about Jesus’ miracles today, they are a sign for us to believe too. To review the lesson, click link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Kx9uMiR1xTA

April 14, 2024: LESSON 7: Jesus’ Authority over Demons; Mark 9:14-29

Teacher: Deacon Howard Griffin

This weeks lesson, we see Jesus’ authority and power over demons. Mark 9:1-13 teaches us about the transfiguration of Jesus on the mountaintop, He took Peter, James, and John with Him, immediately after when they came back to join the other disciples; the scribes were questioning them, He asked why they were questioning them (v14-16). A father came to Him and said that he brought his son to the disciples to heal his son from “a dumb spirit” (v17). Jesus rebukes that generation (v19-20). Jesus questions the father and asked if he believed and the father said “I believe, help now my unbelief” (v21-24). A powerful Saviour - Jesus has power over demons (v25-29). “Faith” we must walk by faith especially in times of trials.

April 21, 2024: LESSON 8: Healing on the Sabbath: Luke 6:1-11

Teacher: Elder Douglas Revels

This weeks lesson deals with honoring the Sabbath. The Pharisees did not understand the Sabbath law and added their own interpretation and traditions to the law. Tradition became more important to them than the Word of God, Jesus came to show that God’s Word can stand on its own and does not need man’s rules added to it. We should not just have an outward form of obedience, it is better to obey the Word of God from our heart. We as believers must continually search the scriptures and make God’s Word the basis for our every decision. We all need a day of rest, however, that should not keep us from doing good or keep us from helping others in need - even on the Sabbath day.

Jesus is Lord of the Sabbath because He is the Creator of the Sabbath!

April 28, 2024: LESSON 9: Jesus’ Mighty Power: Matthew 14:22-36

Teacher: Sister Sandra Wyatt

Over the past few weeks, we have studied Jesus’ power over demons, sickness, and how those circumstances demonstrate his divine authority. The lesson this week we learn Jesus has authority over the wind and sea, because He is the Creator of all things. We will learn that when we follow Christ by faith, we experience the benefits of His divine authority. We can expect to face many challenges as we walk with Christ, because He told us we would have trouble in this world. However, we can have confidence in Him and His will for our lives even in our most challenging and difficult times. He has all power and He will never leave us or forsake us, we belong to Him and He belongs to us. We have full confidence in the power of Jesus! To review the lesson, click link below:
