Letter from the Publisher
It’s been a long, busy first few months of the year preparing the magazine for publication, and we’re so happy this issue is finally here! While we were hard at work behind the scenes, we continued to see you passionately and proactively pursue healthy lifestyles. I know wellness isn’t always the easiest, most straightforward, or most comfortable route. Sometimes we stray from our paths, and it takes something or someone to steer us back on track. My own fitness journey has taken twists and turns I never could have anticipated. I’m inspired by our KidStrong cover stars whose focus is on resilience, independence, and self-worth—which we could all use a dose of. Our spring & summer issue is full of ways to move, fuel, and celebrate your body at every age. I hope it will offer what you need to return to or help you find your path. Whether it’s ways to be active, finding community, or nourishing your body, our goal is to help you feel empowered to try new things and dive into this season with a fresh and open mindset.

KidStrong –An Affirmation
STORY BY MEGAN FORDWhen we think of early childhood education, we often think of pre-K and primary school. But children are born ready to learn and depend on everyone around them to help develop their skills to become independent and lead strong and successful lives. By age 5, a child’s brain is 90% of an adult’s size. KidStrong has created a program that offers innovative training with a curriculum based on the latest in developmental science and leverages experts in pediatric occupational therapy, child development, sports physiology, and physical education.
Michael and Maria Moussa started KidStrong in Oklahoma after noticing a massive change in their 2-year-old daughter’s development after things were closed during the pandemic. A friend reached out about a children’s character and physical development class, so they tried it. During the first couple of classes, their daughter was in Michael’s lap crying. But after sticking it out, she is now a “Titan” who will stand up in front of the class, saying, “I am strong, and I can do this.”
After seeing the growth, the business intrigued Michael. Apart from extracurricular activities, there aren’t many programs focused on 6-month to 11-year-old children. Michael then contacted KidStrong’s owner to discuss starting a branch in Oklahoma. The Moussas opened their location in April 2022 after purchasing the rights for the entire state. Hundreds of children in the metro area excel in the program, including their daughter and 2-year-old son.
The program provides the tools to “win at life,” Michael said, “by focusing on character building and the X factor.” The educational aspect of the curriculum is critical thinking. They have the kids run, causing them to tire physically. Amid exhaustion, the child must solve a problem to ensure they can still win during difficult times.
“KidStrong isn’t meant to replace extracurricular activities; it’s to give them an edge to succeed in them and act faster,” Michael states. A 2-yearold in KidStrong might be on par with a 3-yearold who’s not in the program. The program provides optional materials to take home to continue sharpening skills. The checklist includes taking pictures, helping with chores, or donating something. These actions help maintain a KidStrong focus, with affirmations to recite daily.
“I am Strong, I am Brave, I Can Do This.”
The courses provide interactive training for parents to engage during classes. “We want to give parents the tools and education to empower their children,” Michael says. Parents are required to attend the courses, but the scheduling is flexible with morning and evening options. A member can create a private group session with 5 or 6 parents. Memberships also include access to academies that start when school ends, continuing education in the summer months, and keeping children engaged in activities while parents are at work.
The headquarters team includes coaches, a center director, member relations, sales, and retention to ensure the program works effectively and clients are happy with the results. Each team member must be certified to start and recertified every month. The cost is affordable, can be a month-to-month or a 6-month membership, and includes over 400 members.

Guilt-Free Delivery
STORY BY MEGAN FORDSpringtime brings warmer weather, vacations, sports, and increased activities, which inevitably means managing busier schedules. Meal prep services allow you to put time back into your day without the guilt of losing out on quality ingredients used in home cooking. Fresh Fit 405 believes you shouldn’t have to choose between a busy and dynamic lifestyle and eating healthy foods. They provide pre-made meals delivered directly to your home or office, and have a local retail location for even easier grab and go pickup. Their food philosophy is simple.... eat good, feel good, and do good.
Sarah Van Ahn, the owner of Fresh Fit, breaks down the three pillars of the philosophy, starting with eating well. “Everything is simple; nothing is processed or made with additives or preservatives,” She says. Fresh Fit centers the meals around whole foods and clean, low-inflammatory ingredients, including vegetables, protein, and healthy carbs. All ingredients and macros are listed, and all food is measured. “The overall feeling when people eat their meals is that they know and believe in the ingredients and are shocked at how simple they are. We take a lot of pride in that,” Van Ahn says. If you eat well, you will eventually begin to feel good. When you feel good, you have the endurance to do a workout and still get to work and be a boss or show up for your kids by having the energy it takes to raise a family. Meal prep removes the guesswork over if you’re eating well or receiving the necessary nutrients.
Sarah says, “Without proper nutrition, the ability to motivate yourself to do good doesn’t exist.” She says, “You can show up better because your nutrition is taken care of, and you are confident in your eating. You can then transform that energy into action in how you do good in this world.” She describes meal prep as the simplest form of self-care that is good for the body and soul and simplifies life. It’s a starting point for

making changes and setting more extensive and better goals. Aside from providing energy, clean ingredients help with immunity, healthy skin, and a slim stomach.
Sarah calls the middle aisles of a grocery store the processed section, and explains that removing these items is one of the simplest changes you can make to freshen your food intake. Putting preservatives and additives on your salads can cause a lot of damage. She shares her favorite, simple recipe for a homemade salad dressing as a small step to incorporating clean, healthy ingredients to feel better.
Dressing:
•¼ cup olive oil
•2 tbsp spicy brown mustard (Dijon is an option)
• 2 tbsp lemon juice
• 2 tbsp fresh orange juice
• 2 tbsp honey
• 2 tbsp apple cider vinegar
•1 tsp crushed garlic
•Salt & pepper to taste
Instructions:
1. Combine all ingredients
2. Shake or stir well
3. Taste and adjust if needed; some may prefer sweeter and others more acidic
4. Store extra in an airtight container or jar
Oklahoma Chiropractic Collective
STORY BY MEGAN FORDOklahoma Chiropractic Collective business owners Ty Womack, and Austin Freeman, have known each other since playing little league in elementary. The friendship carried through middle and high school, from roommates in the dorms to opening their first practice together, Oklahoma Chiropractic Collective.
The doctors didn’t want to create a facility that felt sterile; they wanted the ambiance to be warm and inviting. An aroma of fresh, clean, and relaxing diffusing oils drift through the air. The office is not like typical chiropractic offices. Womack and Freeman adjust in the open with three tables on a turf floor to create an inclusive family feel. The office is full of color, expression, and different elements that create a space for healing. Womack says, “Health is not just physical; it’s spiritual and mental.”
Ty Womack knew he wanted to be a doctor from the moment he was injured in high school and wanted to help other athletes heal from injuries. After attending OU and shadowing surgeons, he quickly realized he fell in love with helping people, but not the surgery
process and not having face-to-face interactions with patients. After exploring other conservative healthcare options, Womack decided on chiropractic care.
Austin similarly knew that he wanted to get into a career in helping people after he witnessed his dad, one of his heroes in life, become confined to the floor in pain due to a back injury. It wasn’t until his father got into chiropractic sessions that he got an easement of that pain.
After years of friendship and living together, both doctors knew that their personalities aligned well and had the same work ethic, making starting a business a no-brainer. They wanted to shift from medicine to a conservative, more natural approach. In college, Ty’s grandma had various medical issues, including open heart surgery that went wrong. She was hospitalized for nearly four months. He wanted to hone in on an alternative way to live, a healthier way. The two now aspire to teach the world how to be preventative and strengthen the body and mind.
Patient education is of utmost importance. They want to spend time with each patient by explaining why patients are experiencing pain and other symptoms instead of adjusting and sending people on their way. People often think a chiropractor is only needed once an injury occurs, but Womack and Freeman encourage coming in regularly to ensure the body functions correctly. The doctors can prevent larger issues when the dysfunction is corrected before it manifests as other symptoms.
Springtime causes many patients to have lower back pain, neck pain, and sciatica. An adjustment is paramount to help with injuries, but the office offers different care modalities, like intersegmental traction and a device for lower back strengthening. They teach proper ways to perform day-to-day movements and workouts, including adequate training and ergonomics.

How local news anchor Joleen Chaney’s marathon mindset helps her stay grounded in everyday life
STORY BY LAURA NANCERunning has been a part of Joleen Chaney’s life since 6th grade when she joined the track team at Rush Springs Middle School. “I was naturally quick, and it helped build my confidence as a kid,” she said. Joleen’s love of running has remained, and she’s made it a priority to incorporate fitness into her busy life as a wife, mom, and weekday evening news anchor at Oklahoma City’s NBC affiliate, KFOR.
Physical activity was instilled into Joleen at a young age, even before she discovered running. “I like to exaggerate and say that my mother locked me and my little brother outside when we were younger. She never let us sit around and watch television or play video games,” she added. “I guess her strategy worked and stuck with me and it’s become a lifelong habit. The most television I watch is when I’m doing a newscast.”
And it isn’t just the physical benefits that have kept Joleen running, it’s the mental aspect as well. “There is a huge mental part of running. When things get tough on a run your mind tells you that you can’t, long before your body will ever give up,” she added. “If you can flip that thinking and develop mental discipline, it can serveyou not only while running but also in other areas of life.”
Joleen is currently training for the half marathon at the upcoming Oklahoma CityMemorial Marathon. Her first full marathon was Oklahoma City, a race she callsher very favorite. “It is just such a meaningful race—tough, but so powerful.” Recently Joleen completed another full marathon, the Mountains 2 Beach in Ojai, California, running in remembrance of her mother who passed away in 2014. “Therace ends on Ventura Beach and my mom was born and raised in Ventura County,CA. Not to sound too morbid,
but we buried her in mismatched running socks. I have the matches and often run races in them. She was my biggest cheerleader.”
Mom to two boys ages 23 and 19, Joleen has shared the xample that was set for her by her own mom. “My oldest son runs and sees it as a great stress reliever,” she said. “And though my younger son doesn’t enjoy it, when he was younger, he spent lots of time on his scooter right beside me as I was running.” Though she loves running, Joleen, just like the rest of us, has days where it would be easy to talk herself out of lacing up her shoes. “We all make excuses as to why we can’t do something, we’re human, but if you just get out there and start, you’ll never regret going.”

Spring into Injury Prevention
STORY BY PHYSICAL THERAPY CENTRALSpring symbolizes a fresh start, a chance to break out of hibernation and become active again. As the days get longer, sports resume and people ditch their treadmills to take their fitness regimen outside. Some people begin or continue outdoor walking and running routines, while others pick up new hobbies such as golfing, tennis, or pickleball. Many people are excited to begin gardening this time of year as well. While being outside is excellent

for releasing endorphins and increasing serotonin levels, it is also a common time of year for increased number of injuries.
Physical Therapy Central can offer you a refreshing start to the season by improving your balance, strength, flexibility, enhance performance and prevent possible injuries. Seeing a physical therapist before beginning
a new strenuous activity can be extremely beneficial. They can assess muscular imbalances and prescribe strengthening exercises as well as stretches for improving flexibility in muscles that may have been hibernating through the winter months. Even conditioned muscles need to be acclimated slowly to the increased activities of spring. PTCentral West Edmond’s Clinic Director, Devin Trachman PT, DPT, MTC, advises scheduling an appointment with a physical therapist when beginning a new activity if you feel an onset of symptoms ranging from pain and tenderness to any type of discomfort.
To prevent injury, physical therapists can assess areas of muscular imbalances through specific strengthening and stretching protocols. Trachman says, “it is common during spring to see an influx of sprains, strains, and tendinopathies in association with increased activities.” A typical injury that therapists see in the spring is “runner’s knee,” a specific injury of runners that causes dull pain at the front of the knee.
Other common springtime injuries include ankle sprains, groin, hamstring, and low back strains, shin splints, and “little league” or “tennis elbow.”
Physical therapists are educated and trained to treat nearly all orthopedic injuries. PTCentral has many expert therapists on staff for specific injuries, including several running specialists. Physical therapists are among the highest-trained professionals in the function of the muscles and joints in healthcare. Listening to your body is essential, even if you may not feel pain. You can aim to improve your performance by proactively scheduling visits with a physical therapist.
Your PTCentral physical therapist will complete a comprehensive evaluation that assesses your functional movements, strength, and mobility as well as focusing on your specific goals. Spring is a time of new possibilities!
Your body will feel rejuvenated and prepared for whatever the season brings after a visit to one of PTCentral’s 34+ locations.

Meal Prep 101
Eat clean and conveniently with these winning meal prep strategies.
STORY BY FIT CITY MAGMeal prepping is the concept of preparing whole meals or dishes ahead of when you’ll want them. It’s a handy approach you can use to make delicious, homemade meals without the wait. Meal prepping will save you time and money and it also reduces waste. Prepping your meals in advance gives you total control over what goes in your food making it easier to stay on track with your health goals.
Types of meal prep approaches include:
BATCH COOKING OR FREEZING- Make multiple meals, then portion and store them for the week. This method is useful for recipes you can easily cook in large batches, such as soup, quinoa, or mashed sweet potatoes.
MEALS FOR ONE- Prepare food and portion it in single-serving containers.
INGREDIENT PREP- For people who like to cook and serve food all at once, just prep parts of your recipes. Chop veggies, mix spices, make sauces, or marinade meat in advance until you’re ready to cook.
MEAL PREP TIPS
1. To save time, select recipes requiring different cooking methods. Having too many recipes requiring the same appliance—the oven, for instance—will limit the number of dishes you can prepare at once.
2. Limit your grocery runs.
3. Organize your meals based on your schedule. Knowing exactly when you’ll shop for groceries and when you’ll eat your meals will help you form a good routine.
4. Invest in quality storage containers of all shapes and sizes to stay organized and keep meals fresh.
5. Use an app on your phone or pick up a weekly meal prep planner to keep track of recipes and meals for the week.

Beyond the Cup
STORY BY MEGAN FORDA coffee shop offers more than a cup of locally brewed coffee and an irresistible aroma. It’s a place to discuss the start of a new business, a place to seek warmth in cold weather, a place to catch up with a friend uninterrupted, or a place for aspiring writers to start their first novel. Aspen Coffee’s motto is simple, make great coffee and love the people that come in for it.
Matt Johnston, co-owner of Aspen Coffee, aspired to create an atmosphere that comforts the people who enter its doors. Johnston says, “Even if someone only buys one cup of coffee that day, we want the customer to feel comfortable staying several hours.” Each of the six locations provides a unique design, some providing an old 1900s feel with exposed brick, some providing a modern and airy feel with concrete walls, wood countertops, and high ceilings.
Johnston and Kelly Lyda, cofounder of Aspen, grew up as best friends, knowing they wanted to go into business together, but needed the venture’s vision. Coffee spots were becoming popularized by trending TV shows in the ‘90s, like Friends, Frasier, and Seinfeld. Starbucks was booming in every city. The rising popularity of coffee shops and appreciation for quality coffee, in addition to their hospitality experience, ultimately inspired the two to open an independent coffee shop. They wanted to create quality coffee in a space that felt like home when customers were away from home. And so, a new chapter began.
After 28 years and locations in three cities, Johnston and Lyda built a reputable brand within the community
as the original Oklahoma craft coffee. “We’ve never focused on making the most money,” Johnston said. “It’s always been about building customer relationships and a sense of community. We realized that if you take care of your people, they’ll take care of you.” Johnston and Lyda try to hold out until the last minute to raise prices when everyone else is increasing costs. During inclement weather, the shops remain open if possible for customers who frequently come in.
The flavored lattes are the most popular items but don’t sleep on the Granita, a sweet frozen version of the latte. Another favorite of Aspen’s is the Cortado, an espresso with a bit of steamed milk. Cortado is a well-known drink in Spain, Portugal, and Latin America. Smoothies and treats baked from scratch are available, including tasty gluten-free options and chocolate-covered coffee beans for days of indulgence.
Aspen roasts fresh beans in Stillwater and brews the coffee using manual espresso machines instead of fully automatic. The manual machine allows customizing and the ability to control the process and pay attention to every detail, providing the highest quality possible. Attention to quality and detail is paramount to hands-on quality. From selecting the beans to the flavors and foam designs to the customer experience, the baristas pamper the coffee beyond the cup.
Body Transformation
STORY BY MEGAN FORDSpring weather means colder days are behind us, but it is also a gentle reminder that bikini season is slowly creeping in. Managing an exercise routine can be challenging as daily activities increase and the leisurely hours of hibernation end. As the Kardashians continue to rule the beauty industry, and people flock to schedule appointments for butt implants and pour money into products for thinner waists, FDA-approved services like Emsculpt and Coolsculpting are available to reduce fat and tone the body without surgery. Belle Âme Med Spa and CoolSculpting Center brings new beginnings and new muscles, with results achieved that no beauty product could provide.
Belle Âme is Oklahoma City’s full-service provider of medical grade, professional treatments for skin rejuvenation, laser-based and high-tech aesthetic approaches, and body contouring. It is owned and personally managed by a medical doctor and a team of medical professionals who care for customers’ results. The spa provides the perfect approach to aging with grace by enhancing beauty, which takes balance, finesse, attention to the body’s cues, and above all, experience and expertise.
Urvi Patel, RN, says something that makes the spa stand out is the friendliness and comfort of the environment. “We offer quality services with an extensively trained
staff with natural talent and an eye for aesthetics,” Patel says. The spa has a modern aesthetic with a comfortable feel, and is immaculately clean without feeling sterile. The staff makes the patients feel comfortable as soon as they enter the door.
CoolSculpting is the nation’s most popular FDA-approved, non-surgical method of permanently reducing fat in stubborn areas. Unlike liposuction, there’s no trauma to the tissue, allowing immediate recovery after treatment. The procedure addresses 12 different areas of the body, each with a specific applicator, which uses a powerful vacuum to pull folds of fat into the applicator, which applies precise freezing temperatures in a targeted manner to fat cells.
Emsculpt is one of the newest technologies in the medical aesthetic world. It has earned tremendous buzz and one half-hour session is comparable to doing 20,000 sit-ups. It facilitates the removal of fatty deposits from the body, while simultaneously improving muscle tone. The method is non-invasive and allows the doctor to aim for the desired shape without painful or risky surgical procedures and with no downtime. It especially benefits those who are already fit and who keep a low body fat percentage but want more dramatic results.
Belle Âme also offers PDO threads, something many med spas in the metro don’t provide. PDO Threadlift is a leading-edge, non-surgical, and long-lasting procedure that delivers noticeable benefits immediately and with results that continue to improve over time. Threadlift is the first lifting alternative to a traditional facelift. In addition to lifting and tightening the skin, it also creates a network of new collagen fibers within the dermis, thus lifting and rejuvenating the entire face.
Call Belle Âme today to schedule a free body and skin consultation with one of our medical professionals.

Chiropractors treat more than 35 million Americans annually.
STORY BY FIT CITY MAGMost people associate chiropractic care with the spine and back pain but what you may not know is that chiropractors are trained to work on the body as a whole rather than as a sum of separate parts and treat a wide variety of ailments outside of the spine alone.
Chiropractors allow people to function at a better level from the inside out without drugs or surgery. When your body feels good, you have the energy and motivation to do the things you enjoy.

DIY Acai Bowl
STORY BY ERIKA BARENBERGMy first encounter with acai fruit was in 2017 when I first traveled to Brazil. My best friend, a Brazilian native, introduced me to this incredibly delicious acai fruit bowl concept that was very common in their country. Never having tried acai before, I knew I was in for a treat! I was handed a bowl with a thick frozen purple puree topped with fruit, seeds, and coconut. Each bite was bursting with flavor and crunch and had the perfect balance of sweetness. I couldn’t believe a nutrient dense snack could taste this good!
Acai bowls are prepared from frozen puréed acai berries and served as a smoothie in a bowl or glass and topped with fruit, nuts, seeds, or granola. While these ingredients are nutritious on their own, it’s easy to go overboard with your toppings and turn a healthy snack into a high-calorie indulgence. While acai bowls are nutrient dense, they are still higher in sugar due to all of the fruit so depending on your individual needs, they can be part of a balanced diet but should not be relied upon for weight loss.
For a local acai bowl, check out Clean Juice in Classen Curve!
@cleanjuiceclassencurve
“Found on palm trees in the Brazilian rainforests, acaí berries are a dark purple fruit that is packed with antioxidants. Studies suggest that acai berries could be linked to lower cholesterol levels, better brain function, and decreased colon cancer cell growth due to this antioxidant content.”
STEP 1: Blend. Blend together the frozen acai packet, frozen fruit, milk of choice, and sweetener if using until smooth and thick.
STEP 2: Add toppings. Transfer the acai berry mixture into a bowl and add desired toppings.
Ingredients:
• 1 Acai puree packet
• ½ cup almond milk
• ½ cup frozen berry blend
• ½ cup strawberries
• ½ cup blueberries
Toppings:
• 1 tsp Chia seeds
• 1/4 cup protein granola
• 1 tsp nut butter
• 1/2 cup strawberries
• 1/2 cup blueberries
You can purchase frozen acai packets at local grocery stores such as Akins or you can substitute with acai powder.
You can really top your smoothie bowl with just about anything you want. Keep in mind that the more toppings you add, the higher in calories the bowl will be.
• Fresh fruit: Blueberries, strawberries, raspberries, kiwi, and sliced bananas are popular toppings.
• Granola: Make your own or use your favorite store-bought granola.
• Nut butters: peanut butter, almond butter, cashew butter, or even chopped nuts.
• Fun extras: Cacao nibs, coconut flakes, butterscotch chips, vanilla chips or goji berries.
• Seeds: Chia seeds, hemp hearts, pumpkin seeds, flax seeds, etc.
• Sweetener: Honey or agave.
