Every year, we celebrate our Independence Day to remind us of the sacrifices of the men and women who risked their lives; and for some even paid with their lives so that all of us can be free. Freedom is expensive because we can never quantify the feeling of being free with any financial valuation. Along with it is the sense of national pride and the unity that we as a people have enjoyed. And Filipinos are very proud of it! This year we marked the 115th anniversary and the weeklong activities of our Philippine Independence Week with activities that have been well supported by our local community and our member associations. At our picnic we showed our cohesiveness and oneness as a Council. There was a strong participation from our young people and just going around and and talking to them convinced me that indeed I can see that the Council will be populated by a new set of younger leadership for the future. And we have many more projects to consider along with the ones that have been accomplished. As we are all in a celebratory mood to celebrate our independence let us enjoy the evening once more with the conviction that together we can accomplish much and kapit-bisig tayo at susulong sa ating maliwanag na hinaharap. Mabuhay kayong lahat!

My family
means everything to me because I know that no matter what, I always have them on my side. I am so lucky to be born on January 25, 1995 to my wonderful parents, Ricardo and Charito Mabanta. I have an older brother named Paolo who just graduated Boston University for accounting and a younger sister named Sabrina who just finished her sophomore year of high school at Bishop Eustace. My high school experience has helped me become a better person I believe. I joined my school’s cheerleading team, which definitely taught me that with discipline, teamwork, and dedication can get you very far. With my cheerleading team, we were able to win the Conference Championship twice and place third at the New Jersey State Competition. I made special bonds with not only my cheerleading sisters, but also the people I met outside of the sport. I am so lucky to have met the people I did in high school and I know that these friendships will last a lifetime. As the next school year rolls on, I will be taking my talents to Boston University. I plan to major in biology and eventually, I hope to move on to vet school to become a veterinarian and work with wild animals. My environment growing up was always centered around the Filipino culture, since both my parents were born and raised in the Philippines. Although I cannot speak Tagalog fluently, I am able to speak and understand many small words and phrases. I think my favorite part about the Filipino culture is the food. A meal that includes nilaga or taho is something I’ll never be able to pass up! I’ve only been to the Philippines a handful of times, with most of those trips being when I was too young to remember it. Both my parents come from big families, so whenever we do come to visit, there is always something to do. I am so honored and grateful to be chosen for this year’s Bb. Pilipinas, This wonderful opportunity allows me to stay active in my Filipino community and contribute positive things to it. I would like to give a huge thank you to President Hermie Aczon, officers, committee members, and FECGP overall for all the hard work they do in planning everything and making sure it all runs successfully.
